Emerging nanosonosensitizers augment sonodynamic-mediated antimicrobial therapies

With the widespread prevalence of drug-resistant pathogens, traditional antibiotics have limited effectiveness and do not yield the desired outcomes. Recently, alternative antibacterial therapies based on ultrasound (US) have been explored to overcome the crisis of bacterial pathogens. Antimicrobial sonodynamic therapy (aSDT) offers an excellent solution that relies on US irradiation to produce reactive oxygen species (ROS) and achieve antibiotic-free mediated antimicrobial effects. In addition, aSDT possesses the advantage of superior tissue penetrability of US compared to light irradiation, demonstrating great feasibility in treating deep infections. Although existing conventional sonosensitizers can produce ROS for antimicrobial activity, some limitations, such as low penetration rate, nonspecific distribution and poor ROS production under hypoxic conditions, result in suboptimal sterilization in aSDT. Recently, emerging nanosonosensitizers have enormous advantages as high-performance agents in aSDT, which overcome the deficiencies of conventional sonosensitizers as described above. Thus, nanosonosensitizer-mediated aSDT has a bright future for the management of bacterial infections. This review classifies the current available nanosonosensitizers and provides an overview of the mechanisms, biomedical applications, recent advances and perspectives of aSDT.

Three-dimensional narrow-bandgap perovskite semiconductor ferroelectric methylphosphonium tin triiodide for potential photovoltaic application

A novel A-site three-dimensional organic-inorganic halide perovskites (3D OIHP) ferroelectric, methylphosphonium tin triiodide (MPSnI₃), featuring a narrow bandgap of 1.43 eV, was synthesized. The integration of ferroelectricity with initially moderate efficiency (2.23%) may afford a promising platform to investigate the ferroelectric photovoltaic effect in organic-inorganic halide perovskite solar cells.

A flexoelectricity-enabled ultrahigh piezoelectric effect of a polymeric composite foam as a strain-gradient electric generator

All dielectric materials including ceramics, semiconductors, biomaterials, and polymers have the property of flexoelectricity, which opens a fertile avenue to sensing, actuation, and energy harvesting by a broad range of materials. However, the flexoelectricity of solids is weak at the macroscale. Here, we achieve an ultrahigh flexoelectric effect via a composite foam based on PDMS and CCTO nanoparticles. The mass- and deformability-specific flexoelectricity of the foam exceeds 10,000 times that of the solid matrix under compression, yielding a density-specific equivalent piezoelectric coefficient 120 times that of PZT. The flexoelectricity output remains stable in 1,000,000 deformation cycles, and a portable sample can power LEDs and charge mobile phones and Bluetooth headsets. Our work provides a route to exploiting flexible and light-weight materials with highly sensitive omnidirectional electromechanical coupling that have applications in sensing, actuation, and scalable energy harvesting.

Integrated Reversible Thermochromism, High Tc , Dielectric Switch and Narrow Band Gap in One Multifunctional Ferroic

Organic-inorganic Hybrid (OIH) materials for multifunctional switchable applications have attracted enormous attention in recent years due to their excellent optoelectronic properties and good structural tunability. However, it still remains challenging to fabricate one simple OIH compound with multi-functionals properties, such as dielectric switching, thermochromic properties, semiconductor characteristics and ferroelasticity. Under this context, we successfully synthesized [2-(2-fluorophenyl)ethan-1- ammonium]₂ SnBr₆ (compound 1), which has a higher phase transition temperature of 427.7 K. Additionally, it exhibits a semiconducting property with an indirect band gap of 2.36 eV. Combining ferroelastic, narrow band gap, thermochromic, and dielectric properties, compound 1 can be considered as a rarely reported multi-functional ferroelastic material, which is expected to give inspiration for broadening the applications in the smart devices field.

Lead-Free MDABCO-NH4I3 Perovskite Crystals Embedded in Electrospun Nanofibers

In this work, we introduce lead-free organic ferroelectric perovskite N-methyl-N'-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octonium)-ammonium triiodide (MDABCO-NH₄I₃) nanocrystals embedded in three different polymer fibers fabricated by the electrospinning technique, as mechanical energy harvesters. Molecular ferroelectrics offer the advantage of structural diversity and tunability, easy fabrication, and mechanical flexibility. Organic-inorganic hybrid materials are new low-symmetry emerging materials that may be used as energy harvesters because of their piezoelectric or ferroelectric properties. Among these, ferroelectric metal-free perovskites are a class of recently discovered multifunctional materials. The doped nanofibers, which are very flexible and have a high Young modulus, behave as active piezoelectric energy harvesting sources that produce a piezoelectric voltage coefficient up to g_eff = 3.6 VmN^-1 and show a blue intense luminescence band at 325 nm. In this work, the pyroelectric coefficient is reported for the MDABCO-NH₄I₃ perovskite inserted in electrospun fibers. At the ferroelectric-paraelectric phase transition, the embedded nanocrystals display a pyroelectric coefficient as high as 194 × 10^-6 Cm^-2k^-1, within the same order of magnitude as that reported for the state-of-the-art bulk ferroelectric triglycine sulfate (TGS). The perovskite nanocrystals embedded into the polymer fibers remain stable in their piezoelectric output response, and no degradation is caused by oxidation, making the piezoelectric perovskite nanofibers suitable to be used as flexible energy harvesters.

Structure-Property Relationship of Piezoelectric Properties in Zeolitic Imidazolate Frameworks: A Computational Study

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are a class of nanoporous crystalline materials with very high structural tunability. They possess a very low dielectric permittivity ε_r due to their porosity and hence are favorable for piezoelectric energy harvesting. Even though they have huge potential as piezoelectric materials, a detailed analysis and structure-property relationship of the piezoelectric properties in MOFs are lacking so far. This work focuses on a class of cubic non-centrosymmetric MOFs, namely, zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) to rationalize how the variation of different building blocks of the structure, that is, metal node and linker substituents affect the piezoelectric constants. The piezoelectric tensor for the ZIFs is computed from ab initio theoretical methods. From the calculations, we analyze the different contributions to the final piezoelectric constant d₁₄, namely, the clamped ion (e₁₄⁰) and the internal strain (e₁₄^int) contributions and the mechanical properties. For the studied ZIFs, even though e₁₄ (e₁₄⁰ + e₁₄^int) is similar for all ZIFs, the resultant piezoelectric coefficient d₁₄ calculated from piezoelectric constant e₁₄ and elastic compliance constant s₄₄ varies significantly among the different structures. It is the largest for CdIF-1 (Cd²⁺ and -CH₃ linker substituent). This is mainly due to the higher elasticity or flexibility of the framework. Interestingly, the magnitude of d₁₄ for CdIF-1 is higher than II-VI inorganic piezoelectrics and of a similar magnitude as the quintessential piezoelectric polymer polyvinylidene fluoride.

Releasing chemical energy in spatiallyprogrammed ferroelectrics

Chemical energy ferroelectrics are generally solid macromolecules showing spontaneous polarization and chemical bonding energy. These materials still suffer drawbacks, including the limited control of energy release rate, and thermal decomposition energy well below total chemical energy. To overcome these drawbacks, we report the integrated molecular ferroelectric and energetic material from machine learning-directed additive manufacturing coupled with the ice-templating assembly. The resultant aligned porous architecture shows a low density of 0.35 g cm^-3, polarization-controlled energy release, and an anisotropic thermal conductivity ratio of 15. Thermal analysis suggests that the chlorine radicals react with macromolecules enabling a large exothermic enthalpy of reaction (6180 kJ kg^-1). In addition, the estimated detonation velocity of molecular ferroelectrics can be tuned from 6.69 ± 0.21 to 7.79 ± 0.25 km s^-1 by switching the polarization state. These results provide a pathway toward spatially programmed energetic ferroelectrics for controlled energy release rates.

High Piezoelectric Output Voltage from Blue Fluorescent N,N-Dimethyl-4-nitroaniline Nano Crystals in Poly-L-Lactic Acid Electrospun Fibers

N,N-dimethyl-4-nitroaniline is a piezoelectric organic superplastic and superelastic charge transfer molecular crystal that crystallizes in an acentric structure. Organic mechanical flexible crystals are of great importance as they stand between soft matter and inorganic crystals. Highly aligned poly-l-lactic acid polymer microfibers with embedded N,N-dimethyl-4-nitroaniline nanocrystals are fabricated using the electrospinning technique, and their piezoelectric and optical properties are explored as hybrid systems. The composite fibers display an extraordinarily high piezoelectric output response, where for a small stress of 5.0 × 10³ Nm^-2, an effective piezoelectric voltage coefficient of g_eff = 4.1 VmN^-1 is obtained, which is one of the highest among piezoelectric polymers and organic lead perovskites. Mechanically, they exhibit an average increase of 67% in the Young modulus compared to polymer microfibers alone, reaching 55 MPa, while the tensile strength reaches 2.8 MPa. Furthermore, the fibers show solid-state blue fluorescence, important for emission applications, with a long lifetime decay (147 ns) lifetime decay. The present results show that nanocrystals from small organic molecules with luminescent, elastic and piezoelectric properties form a mechanically strong hybrid functional 2-dimensional array, promising for applications in energy harvesting through the piezoelectric effect and as solid-state blue emitters.

Near-room-temperature martensitic actuation profited from one-dimensional hybrid perovskite structure

Martensitic transformation, usually accompanied by ferroelastic and thermoelastic behaviors, is an interesting and useful mechanical-related property upon external stimuli. For molecular crystals, however, martensitic systems to show reversible stimuli-actuation behaviors are still limited because of a lack of designability and frequent crystal collapse due to large stress releases during the transformations. Here, a one-dimensional hybrid perovskite semiconductor (NMEA)PbI₃ (NMEA = N-methylethylammonium) was prepared by following a dimensionality reduction design principle. The crystal undergoes reversible ferroelastic and thermoelastic martensitic transformations, which are attributed to weak intermolecular interactions among the chains that easily trigger the interchain shearing movement. The actuation behavior occurring during the phase transition is very close to room temperature and demonstrated to behave as a mechanical actuator for switching. This work provides an effective approach to designing molecular actuators with promising applications in next-generation intelligence devices.

Ferroelectric hybrid organic-inorganic perovskites and their structural and functional diversity

Molecular ferroelectrics have gradually aroused great interest in both fundamental scientific research and technological applications because of their easy processing, light weight and mechanical flexibility. Hybrid organic-inorganic perovskite ferroelectrics (HOIPFs), as a class of molecule-based ferroelectrics, have diverse functionalities owing to their unique structure and have become a hot spot in molecular ferroelectrics research. Therefore, they are extremely attractive in the field of ferroelectrics. However, there seems to be a lack of systematic review of their design, performance and potential applications. Herein, we review the recent development of HOIPFs from lead-based, lead-free and metal-free perovskites, and outline the versatility of these ferroelectrics, including piezoelectricity for mechanical energy-harvesting and optoelectronic properties for photovoltaics and light detection. Furthermore, a perspective view of the challenges and future directions of HOIPFs is also highlighted.

Large-Area Flexible Memory Arrays of Oriented Molecular Ferroelectric Single Crystals with Nearly Saturated Polarization

Molecular ferroelectrics (MFs) have been proven to demonstrate excellent properties even comparable to those of inorganic counterparts usually with heavy metals. However, the validation of their device applications is still at the infant stage. The polycrystalline feature of conventionally obtained MF films, the patterning challenges for microelectronics and the brittleness of crystalline films significantly hinder their development for organic integrated circuits, as well as emerging flexible electronics. Here, a large-area flexible memory array is demonstrated of oriented molecular ferroelectric single crystals (MFSCs) with nearly saturated polarization. Highly-uniform MFSC arrays are  prepared on large-scale substrates including Si wafers and flexible substrates using an asymmetric-wetting and microgroove-assisted coating (AWMAC) strategy. Resultant flexible memory arrays exhibit excellent nonvolatile memory properties with a low-operating voltage of <5 V, i.e., nearly saturated ferroelectric polarization (6.5 µC cm^-2 ), and long bending endurance (>10³ ) under various bending radii. These results may open an avenue for scalable flexible MF electronics with high performance.

(C4H10NO)PbX3 (X = Cl, Br): Design of Two Lead Halide Perovskite Crystals with Moderate Nonlinear Optical Properties

Introducing electronegative species into organic constituents was considered to be one effective strategy for adjusting crystal symmetry and designing new nonlinear optical (NLO) materials. By substitution of C4 in piperidine (C₅H₁₁N) with electronegative oxygen, organic morpholine (C₄H₉NO) was easily obtained. Therefore, to design NLO crystals, we focused on combinations of stereochemically active lone-pair (SCALP) cation (Pb²⁺)-based chloride and bromide with morpholine molecules. In this work, two lead halide hybrid perovskite (C₄H₁₀NO)PbX₃ (X = Cl, Br, abbreviated as MPbCl₃ and MPbBr₃, respectively) single crystals with moderate nonlinear optical properties were synthesized by a slow evaporation method. The two title crystals belong to orthorhombic space group P2₁2₁2₁ with one-dimensional (1D) chainlike perovskite structures. Theoretical calculations revealed that the second harmonic generation (SHG) responses mainly originate from distorted {PbX₆} octahedrons of the inorganic framework. Remarkably, moderate phase-matching SHG effects of about 0.70 and 0.81 times KH₂PO₄, large birefringences of 0.098 and 0.111 at 1064 nm, and large laser damage thresholds (LDTs) of 19.94 and 46.82 MW/cm² were estimated for MPbCl₃ and MPbBr₃, respectively. This work provides a novel strategy for new purpose-designed hybrid NLO crystals by adjustment and modulation of chemical modification.

Direct observation of geometric and sliding ferroelectricity in an amphidynamic crystal

Sliding ferroelectricity is a recently observed polarity existing in two-dimensional materials. However, due to the weak polarization and poor electrical insulation in these materials, existing experimental evidences are indirect and mostly based on nanoscale transport properties or piezoresponse force microscopy. We report the direct observation of sliding ferroelectricity, using a high-quality amphidynamic single crystal (15-crown-5)Cd₃Cl₆, which possesses a large bandgap and so allows direct measurement of polarization-electric field hysteresis. This coordination polymer is a van der Waals material, which is composed of inorganic stators and organic rotators as determined by X-ray diffraction and NMR characterization. From density functional theory calculations, we find that after freezing the rotators, an electric dipole is generated in each layer driven by the geometric mechanism, while a comparable ferroelectric polarization originates from the interlayer sliding. The net polarization of these two components can be directly measured and manipulated. Our finding provides insight into low-dimensional ferroelectrics, especially control of the synchronous dynamics of rotating molecules and sliding layers in solids.

Emerging Solid-to-Solid Phase-Change Materials for Thermal-Energy Harvesting, Storage, and Utilization

Phase-change materials (PCMs) offer tremendous potential to store thermal energy during reversible phase transitions for state-of-the-art applications. The practicality of these materials is adversely restricted by volume expansion, phase segregation, and leakage problems associated with conventional solid-liquid PCMs. Solid-solid PCMs, as promising alternatives to solid-liquid PCMs, are gaining much attention toward practical thermal-energy storage (TES) owing to their inimitable advantages such as solid-state processing, negligible volume change during phase transition, no contamination, and long cyclic life. Herein, the aim is to provide a holistic analysis of solid-solid PCMs suitable for thermal-energy harvesting, storage, and utilization. The developing strategies of solid-solid PCMs are presented and then the structure-property relationship is discussed, followed by potential applications. Finally, an outlook discussion with momentous challenges and future directions is presented. Hopefully, this review will provide a guideline to the scientific community to develop high-performance solid-solid PCMs for advanced TES applications.

Bond engineering of molecular ferroelectrics renders soft and high-performance piezoelectric energy harvesting materials

Piezoelectric materials convert mechanical stress to electrical energy and thus are widely used in energy harvesting and wearable devices. However, in the piezoelectric family, there are two pairs of properties that improving one of them will generally compromises the other, which limits their applications. The first pair is piezoelectric strain and voltage constant, and the second is piezoelectric performance and mechanical softness. Here, we report a molecular bond weakening strategy to mitigate these issues in organic-inorganic hybrid piezoelectrics. By introduction of large-size halide elements, the metal-halide bonds can be effectively weakened, leading to a softening effect on bond strength and reduction in polarization switching barrier. The obtained solid solution C₆H₅N(CH₃)₃CdBr₂Cl_0.75I_0.25 exhibits excellent piezoelectric constants (d₃₃ = 367 pm/V, g₃₃ = 3595 × 10⁻³ Vm/N), energy harvesting property (power density is 11 W/m²), and superior mechanical softness (0.8 GPa), promising this hybrid as high-performance soft piezoelectrics.

Improving piezoelectric strain and voltage constant generally compromises piezoelectric performance and mechanical softness. Here, the authors report a bond weakening strategy for organic-inorganic hybrid piezoelectrics and mitigated these issues.

Single-crystal organometallic perovskite optical fibers

Semiconductors in their optical-fiber forms are desirable. Single-crystal organometallic halide perovskites have attractive optoelectronic properties and therefore are suitable fiber-optic platforms. However, single-crystal organometallic perovskite optical fibers have not been reported before due to the challenge of one-directional single-crystal growth in solution. Here, we report a solution-processed approach to continuously grow single-crystal organometallic perovskite optical fibers with controllable diameters and lengths. For single-crystal MAPbBr₃ (MA = CH₃NH₃⁺) perovskite optical fiber made using our method, it demonstrates low transmission losses (<0.7 dB/cm), mechanical flexibilities (a bending radius down to 3.5 mm), and mechanical deformation-tunable photoluminescence in organometallic perovskites. Moreover, the light confinement provided by our organometallic perovskite optical fibers leads to three-photon absorption (3PA), in contrast with 2PA in bulk single crystals under the same experimental conditions. The single-crystal organometallic perovskite optical fibers have the potential in future optoelectronic applications.

Vapor-Induced Conversion of a Centrosymmetric Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Crystal into a Proton-Conducting Second-Harmonic-Generation-Active Material

Chemical responsivity in materials is essential to build systems with switchable functionalities. However, polarity-switchable materials are still rare because inducing a symmetry breaking of the crystal structure by adsorbing chemical species is difficult. In this study, we demonstrate that a molecular organic-inorganic hybrid crystal of (NEt₄)₂[MnN(CN)₄] (1) undergoes polarity switching induced by water vapor and transforms into a rare example of proton-conducting second-harmonic-generation-active material. Centrosymmetric 1 transforms into noncentrosymmetric polar 1·3H₂O and 1·MeOH by accommodating water and methanol molecules, respectively. However, only water vapor causes a spontaneous single-crystal-to-single-crystal transition. Moreover, 1·3H₂O shows proton conduction with 2.3 × 10^-6 S/cm at 298 K and a relative humidity of 80%.

An Effective Strategy of Introducing Chirality to Achieve Multifunctionality in Rare-Earth Double Perovskite Ferroelectrics

The hybrid rare-earth double perovskite (HREDP) system provides great convenience for the construction of multifunctional materials. However, suffering from the high symmetry of their intrinsic structure, HREDPs face the challenges in the realization and optimization of ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties. For the first time, after a systematic investigation of the chirality transformation principle, it is found that the introduction of chirality is an efficient strategy for the targeted construction of multifunctionality, which simultaneously increases the possibility of obtaining multiaxial ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity, and effectively realizes a large piezoelectric response. Moreover, chirality induced ferroelasticity will also achieve excellent magnetic or optical response driven by pressure-sensitive. To verify the feasibility of the above ideas, by using rare-earth ions (Ce³⁺ ) and suitable chiral organic cations, a new HREDP, (R-N-methyl-3-hydroxylquinuclidinium)₂ RbCe(NO₃ )₆ (R1) is successfully designed, in which ferroelasticity, multiaxial ferroelectricity, satisfactory piezoelectric response, and the pressure-driven single-ion magnetics switch are simultaneously achieved for the first time. This work shows that the induction of chirality and the HREDP system provide an effective strategy and ideal platform for the expansion and optimization of the functions in perovskite ferroelectrics.

Achieving circularly polarized luminescence and large piezoelectric response in hybrid rare-earth double perovskite by a chirality induction strategy

Chirality, an intrinsic property of nature, has received increased attention in chemistry, biology, and materials science because it can induce optical rotation, ferroelectricity, nonlinear optical response, and other unique properties. Here, by introducing chirality into hybrid rare-earth double perovskites (HREDPs), we successfully designed and synthesized a pair of enantiomeric three-dimensional (3D) HREDPs, [(R)-N-methyl-3-hydroxylquinuclidinium]₂RbEu(NO₃)₆ (R1) and [(S)-N-methyl-3-hydroxylquinuclidinium]₂RbEu(NO₃)₆ (S1), which possess ferroelasticity, multiaxial ferroelectricity, high quantum yields (84.71% and 83.55%, respectively), and long fluorescence lifetimes (5.404 and 5.256 ms, respectively). Notably, the introduction of chirality induces the coupling of multiaxial ferroelectricity and ferroelasticity, which brings about a satisfactory large piezoelectric response (103 and 101 pC N^-1 for R1 and S1, respectively). Moreover, in combination with the chirality and outstanding photoluminescence properties, circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) was first realized in HREDPs. This work sheds light on the design strategy of molecule-based materials with a large piezoelectric response and excellent CPL activity, and will inspire researchers to further explore the role of chirality in the construction of novel multifunctional materials.

Chemical design of homochiral heterocyclic organic ferroelectric crystals

Single component organic ferroelectrics of spirooxazacamphorsultam derivatives, 1-SSR and 1-RRS, exhibit well-defined ferroelectricity (P_s = 2.2 μC cm^-2) and piezoelectricity (d₃₃ = 10 pC N^-1) below their melting point. More importantly, they possess a low acoustic impedance value of 2.7 × 10⁶ kg s^-1 m^-2, which is well-matched with body tissues.

Chlorine Substitution in Spirocyclic Derivatives Triggers SHG Response in Noncentrosymmetric Crystal

Organic-inorganic hybrid phase transition materials with switchable properties have important potential applications in smart devices such as dielectric switches and storage. Nevertheless, it remains challenging to modify molecular structures efficiently to obtain materials simultaneously possessing multiple responsive properties. Herein, different from ordinary halogen substitutions in Metal Halide, we report a halogen regulation design of organic molecular strategy: (ASD) 2 MnBr 4 (ASD=5-azonia-spiro [4.5] decane) to (CASD) 2 MnBr 4 (CASD=8-chloro-5-azonia-spiro [4.5] decane). After organic molecular halogen regulation, the SHG response was excited and the dielectric phase transition temperature ( T c ) has also been greatly improved. Furthermore, under the irradiation of UV lamp, both showed green light with quantum yields above 50%. This work is of great significance for further exploration of multifunctional molecular switch materials through halogen modification strategies.

Performance optimization strategies of halide perovskite-based mechanical energy harvesters

Halide perovskites, possessing unique electronic and photovoltaic properties, have been intensively investigated over the past decade. The excellent polarization, piezoelectricity, dielectricity and photoelectricity of halide perovskites provide new opportunities for the applications of mechanical energy harvesting. Although various studies have been conducted to develop halide perovskite-based triboelectric and piezoelectric nanogenerators, strategies for their electrical performance optimization are rarely mentioned. In this review, we systematically introduce the recent research progress of halide perovskite-based mechanical energy harvesters and summarize the different optimization strategies for improving both the piezoelectric and triboelectric output of the devices, bringing some inspiration to guide future material and structure design for halide perovskite-based energy devices. A summary of the current challenges and future perspectives is also presented, offering some possible directions for development in this emerging field.

Synthesis and Characterization of a Displacement-Type Ferroelectric-Ferroelectric Phase Transition Compound [(NH3)(CH2)3(NH3)]2[InBr6]Br·H2O

Ferroelectric materials have aroused the researchers' great interest due to their wide applications. Here, a displacement-type ferroelectric-ferroelectric phase transition material [(NH₃)(CH₂)₃(NH₃)]₂[InBr₆]Br·H₂O (1) with T_c = 143 K was successfully prepared. The ferroelectric phase transition is verified by the characterization techniques such as differential scanning calorimetry, single-crystal structure elucidation, dielectric and ferroelectric measurements. The single-crystal structure elucidation reveals that the displacement and distortion of [(NH₃)(CH₂)₃(NH₃)]²⁺ cations lead to the phase transition from Cmc2₁ to Pca2₁. The spontaneous polarizations at 293 and 133 K are 0.15 and 0.12 μC·cm^-2, respectively. We expect that this work will help in further exploration of some new ferroelectric materials.

Pulsed hydraulic-pressure-responsive self-cleaning membrane

Pressure-driven membranes is a widely used separation technology in a range of industries, such as water purification, bioprocessing, food processing and chemical production^1,2. Despite their numerous advantages, such as modular design and minimal footprint, inevitable membrane fouling is the key challenge in most practical applications³. Fouling limits membrane performance by reducing permeate flux or increasing pressure requirements, which results in higher energetic operation and maintenance costs^4-7. Here we report a hydraulic-pressure-responsive membrane (PiezoMem) to transform pressure pulses into electroactive responses for in situ self-cleaning. A transient hydraulic pressure fluctuation across the membrane results in generation of current pulses and rapid voltage oscillations (peak, +5.0/-3.2 V) capable of foulant degradation and repulsion without the need for supplementary chemical cleaning agents, secondary waste disposal or further external stimuli^3,8-13. PiezoMem showed broad-spectrum antifouling action towards a range of membrane foulants, including organic molecules, oil droplets, proteins, bacteria and inorganic colloids, through reactive oxygen species (ROS) production and dielectrophoretic repulsion.

Rational Design of Molecular Ferroelectrics with Negatively Charged Domain Walls

Ferroelectric domains and domain walls are unique characteristics of ferroelectric materials. Among them, charged domain walls (CDWs) are a special kind of peculiar microstructure that highly improve conductivity, piezoelectricity, and photovoltaic efficiency. Thus, CDWs are believed to be the key to ferroelectrics' future application in fields of energy, sensing, information storage, and so forth. Studies on CDWs are one of the most attractive directions in conventional inorganic ferroelectric ceramics. However, in newly emerged molecular ferroelectrics, which have advantages such as lightweight, easy preparation, simple film fabrication, mechanical flexibility, and biocompatibility, CDWs are rarely observed due to the lack of free charges. In inorganic ferroelectrics, doping is a traditional method to induce free charges, but for molecular ferroelectrics fabricated by solution processes, doping usually causes phase separation or phase transition, which destabilizes or removes ferroelectricity. To realize stable CDWs in molecular systems, we designed and synthesized an n-type molecular ferroelectric, 1-adamantanammonium hydroiodate. In this compound, negative charges are induced by defects in the I^- vacancy, and CDWs can be achieved. Nanometer-scale CDWs that are stable at temperatures as high as 373 K can be "written" precisely by an electrically biased metal tip. More importantly, this is the first time that the charge diffusion of CDWs at variable temperatures has been investigated in molecular ferroelectrics. This work provides a new design strategy for n-type molecular ferroelectrics and may shed light on their future applications in flexible electronics, microsensors, and so forth.

Ferroelasticity in Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Perovskites

Molecular ferroelastics have received particular attention for potential applications in mechanical switches, shape memory, energy conversion, information processing, and solar cells, by taking advantages of their low-cost, light-weight, easy preparation, and mechanical flexibility. The unique structures of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have been considered to be a design platform for symmetry-breaking-associated order-disorder in lattice, thereby possessing great potential for ferroelastic phase transition. Herein, we review the research progress of organic-inorganic hybrid perovskite ferroelastics in recent years, focusing on the crystal structures, dimensions, phase transitions and ferroelastic properties. In view of the few reports on molecular-based hybrid ferroelastics, we look forward to the structural design strategies of molecular ferroelastic materials, as well as the opportunities and challenges faced by molecular-based hybrid ferroelastic materials in the future. This review will have positive guiding significance for the synthesis and future exploration of organic-inorganic hybrid molecular ferroelastics.

Lithiating magneto-ionics in a rechargeable battery

Magneto-ionics, real-time ionic control of magnetism in solid-state materials, promise ultralow-power memory, computing, and ultralow-field sensor technologies. The real-time ion intercalation is also the key state-of-charge feature in rechargeable batteries. Here, we report that the reversible lithiation/delithiation in molecular magneto-ionic material, the cathode in a rechargeable lithium-ion battery, accurately monitors its real-time state of charge through a dynamic tunability of magnetic ordering. The electrochemical and magnetic studies confirm that the structural vacancy and hydrogen-bonding networks enable reversible lithiation and delithiation in the magnetic cathode. Coupling with microwave-excited spin wave at a low frequency (0.35 GHz) and a magnetic field of 100 Oe, we reveal a fast and reliable built-in magneto-ionic sensor monitoring state of charge in rechargeable batteries. The findings shown herein promise an integration of molecular magneto-ionic cathode and rechargeable batteries for real-time monitoring of state of charge.

Szafrański and Katrusiak stated that [Hdabco]ClO₄ and [Hdabco]BF₄ are proper ferroelectrics and exhibit much smaller pyroelectric coefficients than our results. We disagree with the arguments and provide a detailed answer highlighting misunderstandings in their interpretation.

Intercalation-driven ferroelectric-to-ferroelastic conversion in a layered hybrid perovskite crystal

Two-dimensional (2D) organic-inorganic hybrid perovskites have attracted intense interests due to their quantum well structure and tunable excitonic properties. As an alternative to the well-studied divalent metal hybrid perovskite based on Pb²⁺, Sn²⁺ and Cu²⁺, the trivalent metal-based (eg. Sb³⁺ with ns2 outer-shell electronic configuration) hybrid perovskite with the A₃M₂X₉ formula (A = monovalent cations, M = trivalent metal, X = halide) offer intriguing possibilities for engineering ferroic properties. Here, we synthesized 2D ferroelectric hybrid perovskite (TMA)₃Sb₂Cl₉ with measurable in-plane and out-of-plane polarization. Interestingly, (TMA)₃Sb₂Cl₉ can be intercalated with FeCl₄ ions to form a ferroelastic and piezoelectric single crystal, (TMA)₄-Fe(iii)Cl₄-Sb₂Cl₉. Density functional theory calculations were carried out to investigate the unusual mechanism of ferroelectric-ferroelastic crossover in these crystals.

Organic-Inorganic Hybrid Noncentrosymmetric (Morpholinium)2Cd2Cl6 Single Crystals: Synthesis, Nonlinear Optical Properties, and Stability

To design nonlinear optical (NLO) materials, we focused on combinations of d¹⁰ metal cation (Cd²⁺)-based chloride and morpholine molecules to form organic-inorganic hybrids. The O of morpholine containing lone-pair electrons can be integrated with Cd²⁺ by a ligand-to-metal charge transfer (LMCT) strategy to build acentric structures benefiting from the second-order Jahn-Teller effect. Introduction of the high-electronegativity chlorine can make polyhedrons of acentric crystals more distorted and conducive to a strong second harmonic generation (SHG) response. Therefore, (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ crystals were constructed and synthesized by a solvent evaporation method. (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ belongs to the orthorhombic P2₁2₁2₁ space group and shows a one-dimensional (1D) structure with distorted [CdCl₆] and [CdCl₄O₂] octahedrons. The short cutoff edge of (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ was determined to be about 230 nm. The SHG response of (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ exhibited an intensity of approximately 0.73 × KDP as estimated by the powder second harmonic generation technique. Furthermore, related theoretical calculations were performed to study the relationship of the band structure, refractive anisotropy, electronic state, and nonlinear optical response. Besides, (Morpholinium)₂Cd₂Cl₆ showed relatively good thermal stability. This work can serve as a guide for the design and synthesis of new large NLO hybrid crystals with d¹⁰ transition metals.

Insights into the Molecular Dynamics of Quasi-Spherical (Chloromethyl)triethylammonium Confined in a Weakly Bound Ionic Cocrystal

Here, we report a weakly bound ionic cocrystal, (Et₃NCH₂Cl)₂[ZnCl₄], which undergoes a reversible structural phase transition owing to the switched molecular dynamics of the quasi-spherical (Et₃NCH₂Cl)⁺ cation from static to dynamic. Interestingly, a unique rolling and moving mechanism is uncovered for such a cation in the high-temperature phase, where its two methylene groups exhibit different kinetic energy barriers. This study provides a meaningful insight into the solid-state molecular dynamics of large-size quasi-spherical molecules that contain both a rigid core and flexible shell.
