Abstract
Sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) plants produce its characteristic phenylpropene-rich essential oil in specialized structures known as peltate glandular trichomes (PGTs). Eugenol and chavicol are the major phenylpropenes produced by sweet basil varieties whose synthetic pathways are not fully elucidated. Eugenol is derived from coniferyl acetate by a reaction catalysed by eugenol synthase. An acyltransferase is proposed to convert coniferyl alcohol to coniferyl acetate which is the first committed step towards eugenol synthesis. Here, we perform a comparative next-generation transcriptome sequencing of different tissues of sweet basil, namely PGT, leaf, leaf stripped of PGTs (leaf-PGT), and roots, to identify differentially expressed transcripts specific to PGT. From these data, we identified a PGT-enriched BAHD acyltransferase gene ObCAAT1 and functionally characterized it. In vitro coupled reaction of ObCAAT1 with eugenol synthase in the presence of coniferyl alcohol resulted in eugenol production. Analysis of ObCAAT1-RNAi transgenic lines showed decreased levels of eugenol and accumulation of coniferyl alcohol and its derivatives. Coniferyl alcohol acts as a common substrate for phenylpropene and lignin biosynthesis. No differences were found in total lignin content of PGTs and leaves of transgenic lines, indicating that phenylpropene biosynthesis is not coupled to lignification in sweet basil.

Abstract
Allium subhirsutum, known as hairy garlic, is a bulbous plant widespread in the Mediterranean area and locally used as a food and spice. In the present study, the chemical profile of the ethanolic extracts from bulbs (BE) and aerial parts (APE) were analyzed by HPLC-ESI-MSn, and antioxidant properties were evaluated by DPPH, ABTS and TEAC assays. The traditional use in the diet, and the well documented biological activity of Allium species suggest a potential as a new nutraceutical. For this reason, the potential usefulness of this food can be considered in the treatment and prevention of degenerative Alzheimer disease. For this reason, acetylcholinesterase inhibitory property was investigated. Furthermore, due to the observed presence of sulfur-containing and phenolic constituents, the cytotoxicity on tumor cells line was investigated. Results revealed significant AChE inhibitory activity for BE and APE. Both extracts exhibited also moderate antioxidant properties in the in vitro assays. Finally, limited cytotoxic activity was observed towards Human colon carcinoma and adenocarcinoma cell line, with differences between the individual parts tested. HPLC-ESI-MSn analysis showed that hairy garlic is a good source of sulphur compounds, flavonoids and phenylpropanoids derivatives, thus being a valid alternative to the common garlic (A. sativum). This work opens new opportunities for the application of A. subhirsutum as a health-promoting food.

Abstract
The ethyl acetate fraction, the stem bark and the residual methanolic extracts from the leaves of Cola heterophylla (Sterculiaceae) led to the isolation of two new compounds: Heterophynone (1) and methyl ester of Colic acid (6), along with four known triterpenes: betulinic acid (2), oleanolic acid (3), ursolic acid (4) and chletric acid (5). Structures of compounds were established by different spectroscopic methods that included 1D and 2D NMR experiment. The antimicrobial activity of isolated compounds was evaluated against two yeasts, Candida Albicans NR 29456 and Candida Krusei 1415; and five Gram-positive bacterial, Salmonella enteric Serovar Muenchem, Salmonella enteric Serovar Thyphimurium, Staphylococcus aureus NR 46003, Staphylococcus aureus NR46374 and Pseudomonas aeruginosa HM 601). Among tested compounds, Heterophynone was found to be the most active with significant antimicrobial activity against Salmonella enteric Serovar Thyphimurium (MIC = 7.82 μg/mL and MBC = 62.5 μg/mL) and good activity against Candida Albicans NR 29456 (MIC = 62.5 μg/mL).

Abstract
: Recently the use of food by-products as natural sources of biologically active substances has been extensively investigated especially for the development of functional foods fortified with natural antioxidants. Due to their content of bioactive compounds, such as carotenoids, flavonoids and limonoids, citrus peels could be suitable to formulate enriched olive oils able to boost healthy nutrition. The aim of this study was: (i) to determine the compositional and sensory profiles of citrus olive oil; and (ii) to evaluate its nutraceutical properties in rats with high fat diet-induced metabolic syndrome and oxidative stress. The results obtained show the potential of using citrus peels as a source of bioactive compounds to improve the sensory profile as well as the phytochemical composition of olive oil. We demonstrated that the production system of Citrus x aurantium olive oil and Citrus limon olive oil improves its organoleptic properties without altering its beneficial effects, which, like control extra virgin olive oil, showed protective effects relating to glucose and serum lipid levels, metabolic activity of adipocytes, myocardial tissue functionality, oxidative stress markers and endothelial function at blood vessel level.

Abstract
Stinging nettle is an annual plant. This plant is known for applications in folk medicine, and as the human diet. The stinging nettle leaves has been used to obtain extracts, which are expected to be with a high content of biologically active compounds. Prepared microwave extracts were applied in the formulation of the functional products. The article completes preparation of the bread with addition of the stinging nettle leaves and its extract, and bread's composition in phenolic acids, flavonoids, micro elements, and macro elements. The biological activity of the prepared bread samples showed significant antioxidant activity. This was especially true against DPPH radicals. It has been shown that it holds a high cytotoxic activity. Leaves themselves decreased the quality of the bread, while the extract improved the quality. It was sensorially confirmed. The article concluded that the extract substitutes leaves in bread as a product of a high benefit.

Abstract
Interest in targeted profiling of quercetin glycoconjugates occurring in edible foodstuffs continues to expand because of their recognized beneficial health effects. Quercetin derivatives encompass several thousands of chemically distinguishable compounds, among which there are several compounds with different glycosylations and acylations. Since reference standards and dedicated databases are not available, the mass spectrometric identification of quercetin glycoconjugates is challenging. A targeted liquid chromatography (LC) coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS) was applied for screening quercetin glycoconjugates in edible peperoni di Senise peppers (Capsicum annuum L.), protected by the European Union with the mark PGI (i.e., Protected Geographical Indication), and cultivated in Basilicata (Southern Italy). Chromatographic separation was accomplished by reversed-phase liquid chromatography (RPLC) using water/acetonitrile as the mobile phase and detection was performed on a linear ion trap mass spectrometer fitted with an electrospray ionization (ESI) source operating in negative ion mode. A correlation between experimental RP chromatographic retention time and those predicted by partition coefficients (log P) along with MS/MS data and an in-house developed database (named QUEdb) provided deep coverage for sixteen quercetin glycoconjugates. Among them, eleven quercetin glycoconjugates were already described in the literature and five were reported for the first time. These last acyl glycosidic quercetin derivatives were tentatively identified as quercetin-(galloyl-rhamnoside)-hexoside, [C34H33O20]- at m/z 761.1; quercetin-(sinapoyl-hexoside)-rhamnoside, [C38H39O20]- at m/z 815.4; quercetin-(galloyl-caffeoyl-hexoside)-rhamnoside, [C43H39O23]- at m/z 923.0; quercetin-(feruloyl-hexoside)-rhamnoside, [C37H37O19]- at m/z 785.1; and quercetin-(succinyl-rhamnoside)-rhamnoside, [C31H33O18]- at m/z 693.1. This study aimed at evaluating and comparing the chemical profile obtained by HPLC-ESI-MSn analysis, the inhibitory activity of enzymes linked to obesity (α-amylase, α-glucosidase, and lipase) and the antioxidant properties (DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and β-carotene bleaching tests) of ethanol extracts of bulbs (BE) and aerial parts (APE) from Allium commutatum Guss. (known in Italy as "aglio delle isole"). The chemical profile revealed alliin as the main abundant compound with values of 31.5 and 38.8 mg/g extract for BE and APE, respectively. APE is rich also in quercetin (38.5 mg/g extract) and luteolin (31.8 mg/g extract). Bulbs extract exhibited the highest activity as inhibitor of enzymes linked to obesity. Except for DPPH test, APE showed the highest antioxidant potential with IC50 of 7.6 and 56.6 μg/mL in ABTS and β-carotene bleaching test after 60 min of incubation, respectively. In conclusion, the present investigation revealed A. commutatum bulbs and aerial parts as a promising source of inhibitors of enzyme linked to the obesity and of antioxidant compounds.

Abstract
Total flavonoids of S. tonkinensis showed obvious anticomplement activity after incubated with human intestinal bacteria. Eighteen flavonoids were identified from TFST and its metabolites by UPLC-ESI- LTQ/MS. Five glycosides were metabolized into three aglycones with more potent anticomplement activity.
Anticomplement activity played an important role in anti-inflammatory effects of traditional Chinese herbs. The total flavonoids of Sophora tonkinensis (TFST) were inactive on the complement system but showed obvious anticomplement activity after incubated with human intestinal bacteria in vitro. In order to discover the metabolic activation of TFST by intestinal flora, the constituents of TFST and its metabolites were identified by UPLC-ESI-LTQ/MS. Their anticomplement activities were evaluated through the classical and alternative pathway. As a result, eighteen flavonoids were identified, including seven flavonoid glycosides, five aglycones and six isoprenylated flavonoids. All the glycosides (daidzein-4′-glucoside-rhamnoside, sophorabioside, rutin, isoquercitrin, quercitrin, ononin, trifolirhizin) were metabolized into their corresponding aglycones in different extent by human intestinal bacteria, resulting in the contents of the five aglycones were highly increased in 24 h. However, no changes have occurred on the six isoprenylated flavonoids. Interestingly, three aglycones (quercetin, formononetin and maackiain) had significantly more potent anticomplement activities than their prototype glycosides. The results indicated that the enhancement of TFST anticomplement activity was attributed to the active aglycones, especially formononetin and quercetin, produced by human intestinal bacteria. These aglycones are likely to be among the potential active components of S. tonkinensis for its inhibiting inflammation effects.

Abstract
Ethnopharmacological surveys on Portuguese flora reveal that Genista tridentata L. is a shrub used in traditional medicine for the treatment of various inflammation-related health problems, although scientific support of its benefits is still necessary. In order to establish the anti-inflammatory potential of G. tridentata and support its traditional use, ethanolic extracts of three sections of the plant (root, stem, and leaves) were subjected to in vitro evaluation of anti-inflammatory activity using lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-stimulates macrophages as an inflammation model. Simultaneously, we also aimed to establish the extracts' flavonoids profile. The ethanolic extracts, obtained by Soxhlet extraction, profile of the three sections confirmed their richness in flavonoids, being three prenylated flavonoids isolated and characterized in the root, including a new natural compound, the 3-methoxymundulin. The extracts from the three plant sections showed strong antioxidant activity at the cellular level and significantly inhibit the LPS-triggered NO production by downregulating Nos2 gene transcription and consequently iNOS expression. Additionally, root and stem extracts also decreased the LPS-induced transcription of the pro-inflammatory genes Il1b, Il6, and Ptgs2. Thus, the results support the anti-inflammatory properties attributed to G. tridentate preparations. Relevantly, the roots of the shrub, plant part not used, is an unexplored source of compounds with pharmacological and nutraceutical value.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Members of the genus Erythrina have been traditionally used in the treatment of various ailments such as inflammation and gastrointestinal disorders. Erythrina speciosa (Fabaceae) is a spiny, deciduous shrub or small tree native to Southern America in Brazil. It is cultivated in Africa and Asia. The traditional usage of E. speciosa indicated its antibacterial, analgesic, and anti-inflammatory activities. AIM OF THE STUDY Evaluation of the phytochemical constituents, gastroprotective effects and possible mechanism of action of the ethyl acetate fraction obtained from the methanol extract of E. speciosa leaves (ESLE). MATERIALS AND METHODS Chemical characterization of ESLE was done using high performance liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS). The gastroprotective activity of ESLE was evaluated using ethanol-induced gastric-ulcer model in rats. Rats were pre-treated with ESLE 25, 50 and 100 mg/kg 1 h before the administration of absolute ethanol. Histological analysis, mucin content, and total acidity were evaluated. The possible mechanism of action of ESLE was studied through the examination of oxidative stress and inflammatory markers, PGE2, and NF-κB, iNOS, COX-2, and HSP-70 immunoexpression. In vitro, anti-Helicobacter pylori activity of ESLE was also studied using micro-well dilution method. RESULTS Fourteen compounds were tentatively identified including alkaloids, flavonoids, and saponins. ESLE exerted a powerful gastroprotective effect. The pre-treatment with ESLE at different doses resulted in a significant reduction in gastric lesions and significant elevation in the mucin production. These effects could be partially mediated by the potent anti-inflammatory activity of ESLE as evidenced by the significant reduction in the immunoexpression of NF-κB, COX-2, iNOS and the reduction in the pro-inflammatory marker, TNF-α. ESLE counteracted the ethanol-induced oxidative stress by increasing the levels of depleted GSH and catalase as well as significantly attenuating the ethanol-induced lipid peroxidation tissue levels. In addition, ESLE exhibited in vitro antibacterial activity against H. pylori. CONCLUSIONS The chemical constituents of ESLE strongly support its potent gastroprotective effect suggesting its future potential application in the management of gastric ulcer by eliminating its symptoms and causes including H. pylori.

Abstract
High-performance thin-layer chromatography (HPTLC) coupled with negative ion desorption electrospray ionization high-resolution mass spectrometry (DESI-HRMS) was used for the analysis of anthraquinones in complex crude extracts of Chilean dermocyboid Cortinarii. For this proof-of-concept study, the known anthraquinones emodin, physcion, endocrocin, dermolutein, hypericin, and skyrin were identified by their elemental composition. HRMS also allowed the differentiation of the investigated anthraquinones from accompanying compounds with the same nominal mass in the crude extracts. An investigation of the characteristic fragmentation pattern of skyrin in comparison with a reference compound showed, exemplarily, the feasibility of the method for the determination of these coloring, bioactive and chemotaxonomically important marker compounds. Accordingly, we demonstrate that the coupling of HPTLC with DESI-HRMS represents an advanced and efficient technique for the detection of anthraquinones in complex matrices. This analytical approach may be applied in the field of anthraquinone-containing food and plants such as Rheum spp. (rhubarb), Aloe spp., Morinda spp., Cassia spp. and others. Furthermore, the described method can be suitable for the analysis of anthraquinone-based colorants and dyes, which are used in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industry.

Metabolite Profiling of Aquilaria malaccensis Leaf Extract Using Liquid Chromatography-Q-TOF-Mass Spectrometry and Investigation of Its Potential Antilipoxygenase Activity In-Vitro. Abstract
The Aquilaria malaccensis species of the genus Aquilaria is an abundant source of agarwood resin and many bioactive phytochemicals. Recent data regarding the chemical constituents and biological activities of Aquilaria leaves led us to attempt to qualitatively profile the metabolites of Aquilaria malaccensis leaves from a healthy, noninoculated tree through phytochemical screening, GC-MS, and LC/Q-TOF-MS. The present work is also the first to report the antilipoxygenase activity of A. malaccensis leaves from healthy noninoculated tree and investigate its toxicity on oral mucosal cells. A total of 53 compounds were tentatively identified in the extract, some of which have been described in literature as exhibiting anti-inflammatory activity. A number of compounds were identified for the first time in the extract of A. malaccensis leaf, including quercetin, quercetin-O-hexoside, kaempferol-O-dirhamnoside, isorhamnetin-O-hexoside, syringetin-O-hexoside, myricetin, tetrahydroxyflavanone, hesperetin, sissotrin, and lupeol. The antilipoxygenase assay was used to determine the lipoxygenase (LOX) inhibitory potential of the extract, while a WST-1 assay was conducted to investigate the effect of the extract on oral epithelial cells (OEC). The extract implied moderate anti-LOX activity with IC50 value of 71.6 µg/mL. Meanwhile, the cell viability of OEC ranged between 92.55% (10 µg/mL)–76.06% ± (100 µg/mL) upon treatment, indicating some potential toxicity risks. The results attained encourage future studies of the isolation of bioactive compounds from Aquilaria malaccensis leaves, as well as further investigation on the anti-inflammatory mechanisms and toxicity associated with their use.

Abstract
Worldwide, billions of people are at risk from viruses, parasites and bacteria transmitted by mosquitoes, ticks, fleas and other vectors. Over exploitation of chemical pesticides to overcome the mosquito borne diseases led to detrimental effects on environment and human health. The present research aims to explore bio-fabrication of metal silver nanomaterials using Rhazya stricta extract against deadly mosquito vectors and microbial pathogens. The phytochemical profile of the R. stricta extracts was studied by HPLC-MS and 1H NMR. Further, confirmation of the bio-fabricated silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) was carried out by UV-vis spectroscopy and characterization through FTIR, TEM, EDX, and XRD analyses. The R. stricta-fabricated AgNPs showed acute toxicity on key mosquito vectors from two different country (India and Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, KSA) strains, notably, with LC50 values of 10.57, 11.89 and 12.78 μg/ml on malarial, dengue and filarial key Indian strains of mosquito vectors, respectively, and 30.66 and 38.39 μg/ml on KSA strains of Aedes aegypti and Culex pipiens, respectively. In mosquito adulticidal activity, R. stricta extract alone exhibited LC50 values ranging from 304.34 to 382.45 μg/ml against Indian strains and from 738.733 to 886.886 against Saudi Arabian strains, while AgNPs LC50 boosted from 9.52 to 12.16 μg/ml and from 30.66 to 38.39 μg/ml, respectively. Moreover, it was noticed that at low concentration the tested AgNPs showed high growth retardation of important pathogenic bacteria such as Bacillus subtilis, Klebsiella pneumoniae and Salmonella typhi with inhibition zone diameters from 11.86 to 22.92 mm. In conclusion, the present study highlighted that R. stricta-fabricated AgNPs could be a lead material for the management of mosquito vector and microbial pathogens control.

Abstract
Two novel compounds were isolated for the first time from Calycotome spinosa (L.) Link, an alkaloid 5-Hydroxy-1H-indole (4) and a cyclitol D-pinitol (5), together with the three well-known flavonoids; Chrysin-7-O-(β-D-glucopyranoside) (1), Chrysin-7-O-β-D-(6″-acetyl)glycopyranoside (2) and Apigenin-7-O-β-D-glycopyranoside (3). The chemical structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated by spectroscopic data and mass spectrometric analyses; including a fresh approach 1D-NMR, 2D-NMR with LC-ESI-MS/MS. In this study, the new compound (4) that has been obtained from the leaves MeOH extract presented the best radical scavenging activity (DPPH) (IC50 < 10 µg/mL) compared to the standard butylated hydroxytoluene (BHT, IC50 = 34.73 ± 0.23 μg/mL) and showed the highest total antioxidant capacity (TAC = 985.54 ± 0.13 mg AAE/g extract) in contrast to ascorbic acid (TAC = 905.95 ± 0.07 mg AAE/g extract). Furthermore, the strongest reducing power (EC50 = 344.82 ± 0.02 µg/mL), as well as the remarkable scavenging potential by ABTS assay (IC50 = 7.8 ± 0.43 µg/mL), were exhibited by the same composite (4). Followed by the methanol crude extract and the compound (3) that also showed a potent antioxidant (DPPH; IC50 = 41.04 ± 0.15 and 47.36 ± 0.21 µg/mL, TAC; 671.02 ± 0.21 and 608.67 ± 0.34 mg AAE/g extract, FRAP; EC50 = 763.73 ± 0.32 and 814.61 ± 0.31 µg/mL, ABTS; IC50 = 19.18 ± 0.06 and 63.72 ± 0.64 µg/mL, respectively), but less than the previous samples. On the opposite side, compound (5) had the lowest activity, in which its values were less interesting to determine. Moreover, compound (4) has equally exerted an attractive antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus (ATTC-25923), Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATTC- 27853) and Salmonella abony (NCTC 6017), as measured by the disc diffusion assay, with inhibition zones of 16 ± 0.5, 9.83 ± 0.29 and 8 ± 0.28 mm, in that order. To the best of our knowledge, 5-Hydroxy-1H-indole was isolated from plants for the second time in our current work. Thus, the obtained results from this investigation propose that the leaves of C. spinosa are a rich natural source for value molecules as potential antioxidants and antimicrobial agents for best human health.

Abstract
Ethnobotanical evidences report the use of Rhododendron luteum Sweet (Ericaceae) in traditional medicinal systems. However, R. luteum has been associated to the occurrence of 'mad honey' poisoning. In the present study, the ethyl acetate, methanol, and water extracts of R. luteum were investigated for their in vitro antioxidant, enzyme inhibition, and cytotoxic properties. The cytotoxicity of R. luteum extracts on A549 lung cancer cell line was evaluated using MTT cell viability assay. Besides, HPLC-ESI-MSn approach was employed to elucidate the secondary metabolite profiles of R. luteum in order to establish any structure-activity relationship. Methanol and water extracts of R. luteum possessed highest radical scavenging and reducing properties while the ethyl acetate extract showed highest metal chelating properties. In terms of enzyme inhibition, the methanol and ethyl acetate extracts of R. luteum, possessing epigallocatechin, were active inhibitors of cholinesterase enzymes, α-glucosidase, and tyrosinase. Water extract caused growth inhibition of A549 cells with 207.2 μg/ml IC50 value. Though R. luteum has received little scientific attention due to the occurrence of grayanotoxins in the plant, however, data presented in this work shows promising biological activity of R. luteum and highlighted its role as a potential source of antioxidant and key enzyme inhibitors.

Abstract
Salix spp. have been exploited for energy generation, along with folk medicine use of bark extracts for antipyretic and analgesic benefits. Bark phenolic components, rather than salicin, have demonstrated interesting bioactivities, which may ensure the sustainable bioprospection of Salix bark. Therefore, this study highlights the detailed phenolic characterization, as well as the in vitro antioxidant, anti-hypertensive, Staphylococcus aureus growth inhibitory effects, and biocompatibility of Salix atrocinerea Brot., Salix fragilis L., and Salix viminalis L. bark polar extracts. Fifteen phenolic compounds were characterized by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-ultraviolet detection-mass spectrometry analysis, from which two flavan-3-ols, an acetophenone, five flavanones, and a flavonol were detected, for the first time, as their bark components. Salix bark extracts demonstrated strong free radical scavenging activity (5.58–23.62 µg mL−1 IC50 range), effective inhibition on angiotensin-I converting enzyme (58–84%), and S. aureus bactericidal action at 1250–2500 µg mL−1 (6–8 log CFU mL−1 reduction range). All tested Salix bark extracts did not show cytotoxic potential against Caco-2 cells, as well as S. atrocinerea Brot. and S. fragilis L. extracts at 625 and 1250 µg mL−1 against HaCaT and L929 cells. These valuable findings can pave innovative and safer food, nutraceutical, and/or cosmetic applications of Salix bark phenolic-containing fractions.

Abstract
The potential human health benefits of American cranberry (Vaccinium macrocarpon Ait.) leads to the popularity of its dietary supplements in the U.S. market. However, the qualities of the cranberry dietary supplements (CDSs) have never been carefully evaluated. In this study, the phenolic components in ten different CDSs were analyzed using ultra-performance liquid chromatography high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS). The study found quercetin and myricetin aglycones in most CDSs, but not in cranberry fruits, despite otherwise similar phenolic profiles between CDS and cranberry fruits in general. One supplement with high levels of B-type proanthocyanidins and non-cranberry flavonol rutin was determined to be adulterated by other botanical extracts. The CDSs only possessed 4% to 11% of the phenolic contents comparing to their claimed fresh cranberry equivalents, emphasizing the urgency of standardized product quality control and labelling for CDS manufacture and marketing.

Extraction, Enrichment, and Quantification of Main Antioxidant Aglycones of Flavonoids and Tannins from Melastoma Dodecandrum Lour.: Guided by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. J CHEM-NY 2019. Abstract
The objective of this work was to determine the main antioxidant aglycones of flavonoids and tannins in antioxidant extracts from Melastoma dodecandrum Lour. (MD), based on its extraction and purification process optimization and component identification by UPLC-ESI-MS/MS. Firstly, the ultrasound-assisted extraction (UAE) process for antioxidants was established by using single factor tests and response surface optimization. Evaluating by DPPH radical scavenging assay, the antioxidant capacity of MD could reach 2742.27 ± 93.86 (μmol Trolox/g) under the optimized conditions including methanol concentration (61%, v/v), extraction time (45 min), liquid-solid ratio (0.46 ml/mg), and extraction temperature (25°C). Then, the antioxidants in the solution were enriched by using macroporous resins. Because of the highest adsorption capacity and desorption ratio, HPD 500 was selected out of 14 macroporous resins for further study based on the static adsorption and desorption tests. The adsorption mechanism of the HPD 500 resin presented that pseudo-first-order kinetics model and Freundlich isotherm model could adequately explain the adsorption process. After the antioxidants were dynamically saturated by HPD 500, the column was eluted with different concentrations of ethanol (0, 25, 50, 75, and 100%, v/v). Among the above five ethanol fractions, 50% ethanol fraction showed the strongest antioxidant activity and more than 95% antioxidants adsorbed in HPD500 could be eluted by 75% ethanol. Guided by analysis results of UPLC-ESI-MS/MS, main antioxidant aglycones of flavonoids and tannins in each ethanol elution fraction were quantitatively detected. Finally, according to the correlation analysis between the antioxidant capacity of each ethanol elution fraction and its content of 10 main flavonoids and phenolic acids, the antioxidant activities of MD could mainly contribute to tannins containing phenolic units such as ellagic acid and/or gallic acid. The results of this work would provide useful information for the production of antioxidants from MD. Thus, the analysis methods could also be a quality control tool for material or products related with MD.

Abstract
Facile methods toward strain-tolerant graphene-based electronic components remain scarce. Although being frequently used to disperse low-dimensional carbonaceous materials, ultrasonication (US) has never been reliable for fabricating stretchable carbonaceous nanocomposite (SCNC). Inspired by the unusual sonochemical assembly between graphene oxide (GO) and carbon nanotube (CNT), we verified the roots-like GO-CNT covalent bonding, rather than just π-π conjugation, was formed during US. In addition, the shockwave-induced collision in the binary-component system enables a burst of fragmentation at the early stage, spatially homogeneous hybridization, and time-dependent restoration of graphitic domains. All of the above are distinct from extensive fragmentation of a conventional single-component system and π-π conjugative assembly. The optimized SCNC exhibits conductivity comparable to reduced monolayer GO and outperforms π-π assemblies in retaining electrical conductance at a strain of 160%-among one of the best reported stretchable conductors. Raman analysis and mechanics simulation confirm the dominant role of counterweighing between the intrinsic and external strains on the mechano-response and durability of SCNC. This work suggests the guideline of creating multiple-component sonochemical systems for various functional nanocomposites.

Abstract
Grape canes (Vitis vinifera L.) are a viticulture industry by-product with an important content of secondary metabolites, mainly polyphenols with a broad spectrum of demonstrated health benefits. Grape canes, therefore, have considerable economic potential as a source of high-value phytochemicals. In this work, liquid chromatography coupled with electrospray ionization hybrid linear trap quadrupole-Orbitrap mass spectrometry (LC-LTQ-Orbitrap) was used for the comprehensive identification of polyphenolic compounds in grape canes. Identification of polyphenols was performed by comparing their retention times, accurate mass measured, and mass fragmentation patterns with those of reference substances or available data in the literature. A total of 75 compounds were identified, including phenolic acids, flavanols, flavonols, flavanonols, flavanones, and stilbenoids. The most abundant polyphenols were proanthocyanidins and stilbenoids and their oligomers. Moreover, the high-resolution mass spectrometry analysis revealed the occurrence of 17 polyphenols never described before in grape canes, thereby providing a more complete polyphenolic profile of this potentially valuable by-product.

Abstract
Leaves of Vitis vinifera cv. Greco di Tufo, a precious waste made in the Campania Region (Italy), after vintage harvest, underwent reduction, lyophilization, and ultrasound-assisted maceration in ethanol. The alcoholic extract, as evidenced by a preliminary UHPLC-HR-MS analysis, showed a high metabolic complexity. Thus, the extract was fractionated, obtaining, among others, a fraction enriched in flavonol glycosides and glycuronides. Myricetin, quercetin, kaempferol, and isorhamnetin derivatives were tentatively identified based on their relative retention time and TOF-MS2 data. As the localization of saccharidic moiety in glycuronide compounds proved to be difficult due to the lack of well-established fragmentation pattern and/or the absence of characteristic key fragments, to obtain useful MS information and to eliminate matrix effect redundancies, the isolation of the most abundant extract's compound was achieved. HR-MS/MS spectra of the compound, quercetin-3-O-glucuronide, allowed us to thoroughly rationalize its fragmentation pattern, and to unravel the main differences between MS/MS behavior of flavonol glycosides and glycuronides. Furthermore, cytotoxicity assessment on the (poly)phenol rich fraction and the pure isolated compound was carried out using central nervous system cell lines. The chemoprotective effect of both the (poly)phenol fraction and quercetin-3-O-glucuronide was evaluated.

Abstract
ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE Protium spruceanum (Burseraceae) is used in Brazilian traditional medicine as anti-inflammatory, but the factors involved in this activity were not yet characterized. AIMS OF THE STUDY analyze the aspects involved in the anti-inflammatory activity of polar fractions obtained from extracts of leaves and branches. MATERIALS AND METHODS Hydromethanolic fraction was obtained by liquid-liquid partition from crude ethanolic extract and its compounds were identified by LC-DAD-MS. Activity tests were performed using LPS + IFN-γ stimulated J774A.1 macrophages. Cytokines were evaluated by CBA kit, NO by Griess method, ROS by DCFH-DA, N-acetylglucosaminidase (NAG) activity by spectrophotometric method, matrix-metalloproteinase (MMP-9) activity by zymography, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) expression by immunofluorescence and cyclooxygenase (COX-2) expression by Western blot. RESULTS Fractions induced an increase of IL-6 and IL-10 which leads to the control of pro-inflammatory cytokines levels. The treatment with the fractions also reduced NO production at all concentrations tested in all evaluated periods. ROS production by the macrophages was inhibited by the treatment and the leaves fraction showed the best results with a lower concentration than that observed for the branches. The enzymes assays showed that leaves fraction inhibited NAG and MMP-9 activities, as well as, iNOS and COX-2 expression. These activities can be associated with the presence of procyanidin, catechin, rutin, quercitrin, isoquercitrin and kaempferol-3-O-rhamnoside, major compounds that were identified in the fraction. CONCLUSIONS Anti-inflammatory activity of P. spruceanum is associated to an immunomodulatory effect that leads to inhibition of ROS, NO, NAG, MMP-9, COX-2 and iNOS.

Abstract
Oroxylum indicum, as a popular functional Chinese herbal medicine for reducing hyperactivity, relieving sore throat, smoothing the liver and adjusting stomach, mainly contains flavonoids. In this study, we aimed to establish a fast and sensitive method that enables to analyze the chemical components in O. indicum qualitatively and quantitatively. First, a total of 42 components were characterized by LC-quadrupole time-of-flight (qTOF)-tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS), including 23 flavonoid glycosides, 13 flavonoids and six other types of compounds. Then, 17 characteristic components of the 19 common peaks in the chromatographic fingerprints of O. indicum were confirmed. Fifty samples were classified into two groups by hierarchical clustering analysis and orthogonal partial least squares-discriminant analysis, which also identified the 10 main chemical markers responsible for differences between samples. Last, the quantitative analysis of multiple components with a single marker method was established for simultaneous determination of six main active components in O. indicum by LC-UV with oroxin B was chosen as internal reference substance. Finally, a rapid and efficient method integrating HPLC with LC-electrospray ionization-qTOF-MS/MS analysis was established to comprehensively discriminate and assess the quality of O. indicum samples.

Abstract
(1) Background: Polyphenols (PP) play an important role in the prevention of non-communicable diseases and may contribute to healthy aging. To investigate the molecular and cellular aspects of PP metabolites on longevity with a focus on mitochondrial function, we applied a pre-fermented mixture of polyphenols (Rechtsregulat®, RR) to rodents and nematodes. (2) Methods: The lifespans of Navar Medical Research Institute (NMRI) mice and C. elegans were recorded. The heat-stress resistance (37 °C) of C. elegans N2 was measured using nucleic staining. Respiration and membrane potential (ΔΨm) were measured in isolated mitochondria. The energetic metabolites adenosine triphosphate (ATP), lactate, and pyruvate were determined in lysates. Expression levels of longevity related genes were determined using quantitative real time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR). Phenolic compounds were identified using ultra high performance liquid chromatography-diode array detection-Iontrap-multiple stage mass spectrometry (UHPLC-DAD-Iontrap-MSn). (3) Results: Several phenolic metabolites including protocatechuic acid (PCA) were identified in RR. Feeding of mice with RR resulted in a significantly increased lifespan. Heat-stress resistance (RR *** p = 0.0006; PCA **** p < 0.0001), median lifespan (NMRI: RR ** p = 0.0035; C. elegans RR * p = 0.0279; PCA **** p < 0.0001), and activity of mitochondrial respiratory chain complexes (RR *-** p = 0.0237 - 0.0052; PCA * p = 0.019 - 0.0208) of C. elegans were significantly increased after incubation with RR (10%) or PCA (780 µM). PCA significantly improved nematodes ΔΨm (* p = 0.02058) and ATP levels (* p = 0.029). RR significantly up-regulated lactate levels, indicating enhanced glycolysis. The expression levels of longevity related genes daf-16, sir-2.1, and skn-1 were significantly upregulated after PCA, and partially after RR administration. (4) Conclusion: Phenolic metabolites such as PCA have the potential to enhance health and lifespan and mitochondrial function, and thus may contribute to healthy aging.

Abstract
Zinnia elegans (syn. Zinnia violacea) is a common ornamental plant of the Asteraceae family, widely cultivated for the impressive range of flower colors and persistent bloom. Given its uncomplicated cultivation and high adaptability to harsh landscape conditions, we investigated the potential use of Z. elegans as a source of valuable secondary metabolites. Preliminary classification of compounds found in a methanolic extract obtained from inflorescences of Z. elegans cv. Caroussel was accomplished using HR LC-MS techniques. The extract was then subjected to solid-phase extraction and separation using Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, which resulted in several fractions further investigated for their antioxidant properties through lipoxygenase inhibition and metal chelating activity assays. Moreover, following additional purification procedures, structures of some active ingredients were established by NMR spectroscopy. The investigated fractions contained polyphenolic compounds such as chlorogenic acids and apigenin, kaempferol, and quercetin glycosides. Antioxidant assays showed that certain fractions exhibit moderate 15-LOX inhibition (Fr 2, IC50 = 18.98 μg/mL) and metal chelation (e.g., Fr 1-2, EC50 = 0.714-1.037 mg/mL) activities as compared to positive controls (20.25 μg/mL for kaempferol and 0.068 mg/mL for EDTA, respectively). For Fr 2, the 15-LOX inhibition activity seems to be related to the abundance of kaempferol glycosides. The NMR analyses revealed the presence of a kaempferol 3-O-glycoside, and a guanidine alkaloid previously not described in this species.

Abstract
Hypericum japonicum Thunb. ex Murray is traditionally used in Nepal to treat several diseases, among whom inflammation and acute pain. Although several secondary metabolites from the same Hypericum species have been already characterized and considered for their pharmacological use, an exhaustive phytochemical characterization of H. japonicum from Nepal is lacking, as well as the assessment of its potential pharmacological properties. Hence, the aims of this study were the characterization of a methanolic extract of H. japonicum (HJME) collected from the Northern region of Nepal by LC-MSn and UPLC-QTOF. The assessment of in vitro inhibition of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and activator protein 1 (AP-1) transcription factors and HJME's cytotoxic effect on human cell lines was performed to evaluate the potential use of this herb as a source of anti-inflammatory and cytotoxic lead compounds. Fifty-seven phytoconstituents were identified, being mainly flavonoids, phloroglucinols, phenolic acids and xanthones. Although compounds characteristic of H. japonicum were detected (quercetin, quercetin-7-O-α-l-rhamnoside, quercitrin and hyperoside), several others are here reported for the first time in this species. The results from bioassays indicated that HJME could significantly reduce the viability of human THP-1 cells (IC50 = 5.4 ± 1.1 μg mL-1), showing the promising potential of HJME as anti-tumor agent. Furthermore, HJME significantly decreased the activation of both NF-κB and AP-1 at the concentration of 2 μg mL-1. Overall, these data suggest that H. japonicum from Nepal could be used as a source of potential natural anti-inflammatory and anti-tumor lead compounds.

Abstract
Molecularly imprinted polymer (MIP) and magnetic molecularly imprinted polymer (mag-MIP) for solid extraction and pre-concentration of quercetin have been successfully prepared by thermal polymerization method using quercetin (Q) as a template, acrylamide (AA) as a functional monomer, and ethylene glycol dimethacrylate (EGDMA) as a cross-linking agent. The MIP and mag-MIP were successfully applied in analysis of quercetin by mass spectrometry (MS) methods. To perform ambient plasma ionization experiments, a setup consisting of the heated crucible, a flowing atmospheric-pressure afterglow (FAPA) plasma ion source, and amaZon SL ion trap (Bruker, Bremen, Germany) was used. The heated crucible with programmable temperature allowed desorption of the analytes from MIPs structure which resulted in their direct introduction into the ion stream. The results of Q-MIP/Q-mag-MIP and FAPA-MS measurements were compared with those of the analysis of quercetin by the ESI-MS method without extractions and pre-concentration of analytes on polymers. Limits of detection (LOD) for quercetin solutions in both positive and negative ESI-MS were established at 10−8 M and 10−7 M, respectively. The linearity (R2 = 0.9999) of the proposed analytical procedure for quercetin determination in positive ions was provided in the range between 10−4 M and 10−7 M. Moreover, the same parameters were established for FAPA-MS in positive ions, reaching LOD at 0.005 mg/gMIP and the linearity of the method in the range of 0.015–0.075 mg/gMIP with the correlation coefficient value R2 = 0.9850.

Abstract
La almendra y nuez pecana son alimentos funcionales, cuyo consumo habitual puede prevenir el desarrollo de numerosas enfermedades crónico-degenerativas. Los compuestos fenólicos (CF) son algunos de los que poseen mayor actividad biológica en estos frutos secos, pero su identificación y caracterización siempre representa un reto analítico. El objetivo del presente trabajo fue caracterizar el perfil de los CF, mediante HPLC acoplado a espectrometría de masas en tándem (MS/MS) de dos tipos de extractos de nuez pecana y almendra, un extracto etanólico y uno acetónico. Se identificaron, mediante HPLC acoplado a espectrometría de masas de alta resolución (Q-TOF), 29 compuestos en almendra (22 estuvieron en el extracto acetónico y 24 en el etanólico) y 43 en nuez pecana (39 en el acetónico y 37 en el etanólico). La identidad de 6 compuestos de la almendra y 20 de nuez pecana se confirmó mediante el análisis de sus patrones de fragmentación en el modo MS/MS del equipo. El perfil de los CF fue claramente diferente entre almendra y nuez, pero muy parecido entre ambos tipos de solventes empleados (acetona y etanol), para un mismo fruto seco. En la almendra predominó la presencia de flavonoles y flavanonas, mientras que en nuez pecana predominaron taninos hidrolizables (sobre todo elagitaninos y derivados simples del ácido elágico) y condensados (hasta tetrámeros). En este estudio se describe por primera vez la identificación de tres elagitaninos en nuez pecana.

Abstract
8,2'-Diprenylquercetin 3-methyl ether, a natural product with prominent anti-breast cancer activity, is the main active constituent of Sinopodophylli Fructus. A high-performance liquid chromatography with a diode array detector coupled with electrospray ionization ion trap time-of-flight multistage mass spectrometry (HPLC-DAD-ESI-IT-TOF-MSn) method was established and applied to profile and identify the metabolites of 8,2'-diprenylquercetin 3-methyl ether as well as study their distribution in rat organs for the first time. A total of 100 new metabolites were tentatively identified in rats. The metabolic reactions of 8,2'-diprenylquercetin 3-methyl ether in rats in vivo were hydroxylation, methylation, glucuronidation, dehydrogenation, sulfation, polymerization and cysteine conjugation as well as the specific reactions of leucine/isoleucine, proline, and vitamin C conjugation. The detected metabolites included 77 in faeces, 50 in urine, 11 in plasma, 50 in the small intestine, 32 in the stomach, 23 in the liver, 9 in the lungs, 9 in the spleen, 8 in the heart, and 6 in the kidneys. The results indicated that the small intestine, stomach, and liver were the major organs for the distribution of 8,2'-diprenylquercetin 3-methyl ether metabolites. Furthermore, 27 metabolites showed various bioactivities predicted by the analysis of "PharmMapper", among which 9 metabolites showed anti-cancer activity. These results are very useful for understanding the metabolism and pharmacological actions as well as the effective forms and toxic actions of 8,2'-diprenylquercetin 3-methyl ether in vivo; moreover, they will lay the foundation for further studies on the metabolism of prenylflavonoid compounds.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The consumption of botanical dietary supplements (BDS) is a common practice among the US population. However, the potential for botanical-drug interactions exists, and their mechanisms have not been thoroughly studied. CYP3A4 is an important enzyme that contributes to the metabolism of about 60% of clinically used drugs. PURPOSE To investigate the potential for botanical-drug interactions of Lepidium meyenii Walpers (maca) root and Euterpe oleracea Mart. (açaí) berries, two commonly used BDS, when co-administered with CYP3A4-metabolized drugs. METHODS In an attempt to decrease the general discrepancy between in vivo and in vitro studies, the absorption profiles, particularly for passive diffusion, of plant extracts were investigated. Specifically, the parallel artificial membrane permeability assay (PAMPA) model was utilized to simulate intestinal filtration of passively diffused constituents of açaí and maca extracts. These were subsequently screened for in vitro liver CYP3A4 inhibition and induction. In the inhibition assay, midazolam was used as the probe substrate on genotyped human liver microsomes (CYP3A5 null), and the production of its 1'-substituted metabolite when co-cultured with extract treatments was monitored. In the induction assay, extract treatments were applied to human primary hepatocytes, and quantitative PCR analysis was performed to determine CYP3A4 mRNA expression. RESULTS Passively diffused constituents of the methanol açaí extract (IC50 of 28.03 µg/µl) demonstrated the highest inhibition potential, and, at 1.5 µg/µl, induced significant changes in CYP3A4 gene expression. The composition of this extract was further investigated using the chemometric tool Mass Profiler Professional (MPP) on liquid chromatography-mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) data. Subsequently, five compounds of interest characterized by high abundance or high permeability were extracted for further study. This included efforts in effective passive permeability determination and structural elucidation by tandem mass spectrometry (MS/MS). CONCLUSION The passively absorbable portion of a methanol açaí extract exhibited inhibition and induction effects on CYP3A4 suggesting the potential to produce botanical-drug interactions.

Abstract
Long-chain ferulic acid esters, such as eicosyl ferulate (1), show a complex and analytically valuable fragmentation behavior under negative ion electrospay collision-induced dissociation ((-)-ESI-CID) mass spectrometry, as studied by use of a high-resolution (Orbitrap) mass spectrometer. In a strong contrast to the very simple fragmentation of the [M + H]+ ion, which is discussed briefly, the deprotonated molecule, [M - H]- , exhibits a rich secondary fragmentation chemistry. It first loses a methyl radical (MS2 ) and the ortho-quinoid [M - H - Me]-• radical anion thus formed then dissociates by loss of an extended series of neutral radicals, Cn H2n + 1 • (n = 0-16) from the long alkyl chain, in competition with the expulsion of CO and CO2 (MS3 ). The further fragmentation (MS4 ) of the [M - H - Me - C3 H7 ]- ion, discussed as an example, and the highly specific losses of alkyl radicals from the [M - H - Me - CO]-• and [M - H - Me - CO2 ]-• ions provide some mechanistic and structural insights.

Abstract
In this study, phytochemical profiling of hydro-alcoholic extract of Ammoides atlantica aerial parts has been carried out using RP-UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS in negative ionization mode Chemical characterization was established according to the MS and MS/MS spectra. A total of 66 chemical compounds were detected. Among these, 45 compounds were identified: hydroxycinnamic acid and derivatives (26), hydroxybenzoic acids (4), flavones (11), flavonols (3), and a lignan. Total phenolics (371.57 mg/g) and total flavonoids (41.02 mg/g) contents were also determined. Moreover, the antioxidant activity of A. atlantica extract was also studied by six methods: DPPH (IC50: 23.31 µg/mL), ABTS+ (IC50: 11.31 µg/mL), O2- DMSO alkaline (IC50: 3.19 µg/mL), ferrous ions chelating assays (IC50: 102.35 µg/mL), reducing power (A0.50: 92.70 µg/mL) and CUPRAC (A0.50: 13.56 µg/mL) assays. These results suggest that the antioxidant activity of the hydroalcoholic extract was comparable to common antioxidant additives in most of the tests, representing a good alternative.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to investigate the availability of seeds, one of the byproducts of green tea, and evaluate the physiological activity of seed oil. The ameliorating effect of green tea seed oil (GTO) was evaluated on H2O2-induced PC12 cells and amyloid beta (Aβ)1–42-induced ICR mice. GTO showed improvement of cell viability and reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in H2O2-induced PC12 cells by conducting the 2′,3-(4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) and 2′,7′-dichlorofluorescein diacetate (DCF-DA) analysis. Also, administration of GTO (50 and 100 mg/kg body weight) presented protective effects on behavioral and memory dysfunction by conducting Y-maze, passive avoidance, and Morris water maze tests in Aβ-induced ICR mice. GTO protected the antioxidant system by reducing malondialdehyde (MDA) levels, and by increasing superoxide dismutase (SOD) and reducing glutathione (GSH) contents. It significantly regulated the cholinergic system of acetylcholine (ACh) contents, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activities, and AChE expression. Also, mitochondrial function was improved through the reduced production of ROS and damage of mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP) by regulating the Aβ-related c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK)/protein kinase B (Akt) and Akt/apoptosis pathways. This study suggested that GTO may have an ameliorating effect on cognitive dysfunction and neurotoxicity through various physiological activities.

Abstract
A new flavanone glycoside, butin 4′-O-(2″-O-β-D-apiofuranosyl)-β-D-glucopyranoside (1), together with liquiritin (2), liquiritin apioside (3), isoliquiritn apioside (4), davidioside (5), quercetin (6), kaempferol (7), kaempferol 3-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (8) and kaempferol 3-O-α-L-arabinofuranoside (9) were isolated from the marc of Rosa damascena flowers after industrial distillation of essential oil. This is the first report of the occurrence of compounds 2, 3, 4 and 5 in R. damascena. The structures of the isolated constituents were established on the basis of spectroscopic {UV, IR, 1D, 2D NMR (DEPT, HMQC, HMBC and COSY)}, spectrometric (ESI-QTOF-MS), and chemical evidence.

Abstract
Small unilamellar and multilayered liposomes loaded with polymeric (epi)catechins up to pentamers were produced. The bioaccessibility, kinetic release profile, and degradation under in vitro gastrointestinal conditions were monitored by UHPLC-DAD-QTOF-MS/MS. The results show that all of the procyanidins underwent depolymerization and epimerization into small molecular oligomers and mainly to (epi)catechin subunits. Moreover, all of the liposome formulations presented higher bioaccessibility and antioxidant activity in comparison to their respective counterparts in non-encapsulated form. Similar results were obtained with procyanidins from cocoa extract-loaded liposomes. Namely, the bioaccessibility of dimer, trimer, and tetramer fractions from cocoa-loaded liposomes were 4.5-, 2.1-, and 9.3-fold higher than those from the non-encapsulated cocoa extract. Overall, the procyanidin release profile was dependent on their chemical structure and physicochemical interaction with the lipid carrier. These results confirmed that liposomes are efficient carriers to stabilize and transport procyanidins with the aim of enhancing their bioaccessibility at a controlled release rate.

Abstract
Spontaneous forms of hemp (Cannabis sativa L., often reported as Cannabis sativa var. spontanea Vavilov) with a low content of psychoactive cannabinoids can be considered as a valuable source of other phytoconstituents to be used in nutraceuticals or for their health promoting properties. Chemical data on this hemp variety are rather scarce. In this article, we report a comprehensive phytochemical characterization of leaves, male and female inflorescences of C. sativa growing wild in Hungary. For the purpose, the essential oil along with polar extracts were analyzed using GC/MS, NMR and LC-DAD-MS techniques, respectively. The results indicated that female inflorescence essential oil contains high amounts of the CB2 agonists, (E)-caryophyllene (28.3 %) and cannabidiol (CBD; 24.9 %), whereas leaves and male inflorescence essential oils contained lower amounts of both compounds. HPLC/MS allowed to quantify cannabidiol (CBD) and cannabidiolic acid (CBD-A) in the ethyl acetate extracts from leaves, male and female inflorescences; they were 0.3, 0.8 and 0.9 %, and 0.2, 0.3 and 0.4 %, respectively. Flavonoids of this spontaneous form of hemp were formed by C-glycosides and glucuronic acids of kaempferol and apigenin with a total content of 3.8, 6.1 and 7.8 mg/g in methanolic extracts from leaves, male and female inflorescences, respectively. Based on these results, spontaneous C. sativa may represent an important source of CB2 agonists and bioflavonoids to be used in nutraceuticals, cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Abstract
Aging is an inevitable biological process characterized by the loss of functional capacity and associated with changes in all phases of pharmacokinetic processes. Naringin, a dietary flavanone glycoside, has been proved to be beneficial for the treatment of multiple age-associated chronic diseases. To date, the pharmacokinetic processes of naringin in aged individuals are still unknown. Thus, a rapid resolution liquid chromatography tandem triple quadrupole mass spectrometry (RRLC-QQQ-MS/MS) method was established for the determination of naringin and its metabolite naringenin in rat plasma, urine, feces, and tissue homogenate. The pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated and a higher exposure of naringin and naringenin were observed in aged rats. Naringin and naringenin were mostly distributed in gastrointestinal tract, liver, kidney, lung, and trachea. Furthermore, a total of 39 flavonoid metabolites (mainly glucuronides and sulfates) and 46 microbial-derived phenolic catabolites were screened with ultra-fast liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight tandem mass spectrometry (UFLC-Q-TOF-MS/MS). Naringenin, hippuric acid, and 3-(4'-hydroxyphenyl)propionic acid were predominated metabolites. This study systemically investigated the pharmacokinetics, tissue distribution, metabolism, and excretion of naringin in aged rats, revealing age- and gender-related changes in the in vivo behavior of naringin. These results would be helpful for the interpretation of pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of naringin in aged population.

Abstract
Mangifera odorata fruit, the hybrid forms between M. indica (mango) and M. foetida (bacang), has been shown to exhibit potential antioxidant activity, and the fruit waste could demonstrate functional and nutritional potential. In the present study, the nutritional composition (proximate, sugars, vitamins and minerals analyses), the anti-diabetic activities and phytochemical profile of M. odorata peel and seed kernel were investigated for the first time. The results indicated that seed kernel rich in fat, protein, carbohydrate, and ash while peel contained significantly greater amount of fiber, minerals, β-Carotene and ascorbic acid compared to seed kernel. The samples were then extracted using different solvents (acetone, ethanol, methanol at 60%, v/v and pure deionized water) and their anti-diabetic activities (α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition assay) were determined. Seed kernel had the lowest IC50 values for α-amylase and α-glucosidase inhibition assay in 60% ethanol and 60% acetone, respectively. Due to the toxic effect and high volatility of acetone, the ethanolic extracts of samples were further analyses for their phytochemical profile using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography electrospray ionization orbitrap tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-Orbitrap-MS/MS). The most abundant compounds identified were phenolic acid, ellagic acid, and flavonoid. These findings suggest that M. odorata fruit wastes, especially the seed kernel possesses promising ability to be used as functional ingredient in the food industry.

Abstract
Chestnut (Castanea sativa Miller.) burs (CSB) represent a solid waste produced during the edible fruit harvesting. Their usual disposal in the field increases the environmental and economic impact of the agricultural process. HPLC-UV-HRMS profiling revealed that CSB organic and aqueous extracts (CSB-M, CSB-H, CSB-A) contain several hydrolyzable tannins, mainly ellagitannins, and glycoside flavonols. Ellagic acid (EA) and chestanin are predominant components (5–79 and 1–13 mg/g dry extract, respectively). NMR analysis confirmed the chemical structures of the major constituents from CSB-M. The extracts displayed a significant scavenging activity against DPPH• (EC50 12.64–24.94 µg/mL) and ABTS•+ radicals (TEAC value 2.71–3.52 mM Trolox/mg extract). They were effective in inhibiting the mycelial growth (EC50 6.04–15.51 mg/mL) and spore germination (EC50 2.22–11.17 mg/mL) of Alternaria alternata and Fusarium solani. At the highest concentration, CSB-M was also active against Botrytis cinerea both in mycelium and spore form (EC50 64.98 and 16.33 mg/mL). The EA contributed to the antifungal activity of extracts (EC50 on spore germination 13.33–112.64 µg/mL). Our results can support the upgrading of chestnut burs from agricultural wastes to a resource of natural fungicides for managing fruit and vegetable diseases.

Abstract
Carob is a legume tree of a considerable commercial importance for the flavor and sweet industry. In this context, it is cultivated mostly for its pods, which are known for their nutritive value and multiple health benefits. However, metabolite patterns, underlying these properties are still mostly uncharacterized. In this study, the role of geographical origin, ontogenetic changes and thermal processing on the Ceratonia siliqua pod metabolome was assessed by mass spectrometry (MS)-based metabolomics. Thereby, a total of 70 fruits primary metabolites, represented mainly by carbohydrates, organic and amino acids were detected. Analysis of secondary bioactive metabolites assessed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-HR-MS) revealed in total 83 signals. The major signals, most significantly contributing in discrimination of C. siliqua specimens were assigned to tannins and flavonoids. PCA models derived from either UHPLC-MS or GC-MS proved to be powerful tools for discrimination of C. siliqua specimens.

Abstract
Qingre Lidan Decoction (QRLDD), a classic precompounded prescription, is widely used as an effective treatment for cholelithiasis clinically. However, its chemical profile and mechanism have not been characterized and elucidated. In the present study, a rapid, sensitive, and reliable ultraperformance liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry method was established for comprehensively identifying the major constituents in QRLDD. Furthermore, a network pharmacology strategy based on the chemical profile was applied to clarify the synergetic mechanism. A total of 72 compounds containing flavonoids, terpenes, phenolic acid, anthraquinones, phenethylalchohol glycosides, and other miscellaneous compounds were identified, respectively. 410 disease genes, 432 compound targets, and 71 related pathways based on cholelithiasis-related and compound-related targets databases as well as related pathways predicted by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes database were achieved. Among these pathways and genes, pathway in cancer and MAPK signaling pathway may play an important role in the development of cholelithiasis. EGFR may be a crucial target in the conversion of gallstones to gallbladder carcinoma. Regulation of PRKCB/RAF1/MAP2K1/MAPK1 is associated with cell proliferation and differentiation. Thus, the fingerprint coupled with network pharmacology analysis could contribute to simplifying the complex system and providing directions for further research of QRLDD.
