Abstract
Environmental justice research is increasingly focused on community-engaged, participatory investigations that test interventions to improve health. Such research is primed for the use of implementation science-informed approaches to optimize the uptake and use of interventions proven to be effective. This review identifies synergies between implementation science and environmental justice with the goal of advancing both disciplines. Specifically, the article synthesizes the literature on neighborhood-, community-, and policy-level interventions in environmental health that address underlying structural determinants (e.g., structural racism) and social determinants of health. Opportunities to facilitate and scale the equitable implementation of evidence-based environmental health interventions are highlighted, using urban greening as an illustrative example. An environmental justice-focused version of the implementation science subway is provided, which highlights these principles: Remember and Reflect, Restore and Reclaim, and Reinvest. The review concludes with existing gaps and future directions to advance the science of implementation to promote environmental justice.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a genetically determined monogenic disorder of predominantly autosomal dominant inheritance. A number of studies on differences in the genetic profile of patients with FH have demonstrated the importance of a more substantive evaluation of genetic features. The aim of this study was to evaluate the genetic profile of patients with clinical FH among Italian and Russian patients. METHODS We included 144 Italian and 79 Russian FH patients; clinical diagnosis was based on the same criteria. Patients were divided in: positive to genetic test (one causative variant), inconclusive (only variants of uncertain clinical significance [VUS]), and negative (with likely benign/benign variants, heterozygous variants in LDLRAP1 gene, or without causative variants). RESULTS The genetic test was positive in 76.4 % of the Italian patients and in 49.4 % of the Russian patients. The presence of VUS alone was detected in 7.6 % and in 19.0 % (p < 0.001), respectively. Among patients with positive genetic diagnosis, pre-treatment LDL-C levels were higher in the Russian cohort (353.5 ± 111.3 vs. 302.7 ± 52.1 mg/dL, p = 0.009), as well as the percentage of treated patients (53.8 % vs. 14.5 %, p < 0.001) and the prevalence of premature coronary heart disease (12.8 % vs. 3.6 %, p = 0.039). Among patients carrying only VUS, mean pre-treatment LDL-C levels were similar between the cohorts (299.5 ± 68.1 vs. 295.3 ± 46.8 mg/dL, p = 0.863). Among pathogenic/likely pathogenic variants and VUS, only 5 % and 4 % was shared between the two cohorts, respectively. CONCLUSION The genetic background of patients clinically diagnosed with FH in two different countries is characterized by high variability.

Abstract
Iran is located along the Central Asian corridor, a natural artery that has served as a cross-continental route since the first anatomically modern human populations migrated out of Africa. We compiled and reanalyzed the HVS-I (hypervariable segment-I) of 3840 mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) sequences from 19 Iranian populations and from 26 groups from adjacent countries to give a comprehensive review of the maternal genetic variation and investigate the impact of historical events and cultural factors on the maternal genetic structure of modern Iranians. We conclude that Iranians have a high level of genetic diversity. Thirty-six haplogroups were observed in Iran's populations, and most of them belong to widespread West-Eurasian haplogroups, such as H, HV, J, N, T, and U. In contrast, the predominant haplogroups observed in most of the adjacent countries studied here are H, M, D, R, U, and C haplogroups. Using principal component analysis, clustering, and genetic distance-based calculations, we estimated moderate genetic relationships between Iranian and other Eurasian groups. Further, analyses of molecular variance and comparing geographic and genetic structures indicate that mtDNA HVS-I sequence diversity does not exhibit any sharp geographic structure in the country. Barring a few from some culturally distinct and naturally separated minorities, most Iranian populations have a homogenous maternal genetic structure.

Abstract
Biogeographical barriers to gene flow are central to plant phylogeography. In East Asia, plant distribution is greatly influenced by two phylogeographic breaks, the Mekong-Salween Divide and Tanaka-Kaiyong Line, however, few studies have investigated how these barriers affect the genetic diversity of species that are distributed across both. Here we used 14 microsatellite loci and four chloroplast DNA fragments to examine genetic diversity and distribution patterns of 49 populations of Populus rotundifolia, a species that spans both the Mekong-Salween Divide and the Tanaka-Kaiyong Line in southwestern China. Demographic and migration hypotheses were tested using coalescent-based approaches. Limited historical gene flow was observed between the western and eastern groups of P. rotundifolia, but substantial flow occurred across both the Mekong-Salween Divide and Tanaka-Kaiyong Line, manifesting in clear admixture and high genetic diversity in the central group. Wind-borne pollen and seeds may have facilitated the dispersal of P. rotundifolia following prevalent northwest winds in the spring. We also found that the Hengduan Mountains, where multiple genetic barriers were detected, acted on the whole as a barrier between the western and eastern groups of P. rotundifolia. Ecological niche modeling suggested that P. rotundifolia has undergone range expansion since the last glacial maximum, and demographic reconstruction indicated an earlier population expansion around 600 Ka. The phylogeographic pattern of P. rotundifolia reflects the interplay of biological traits, wind patterns, barriers, niche differentiation, and Quaternary climate history. This study emphasizes the need for multiple lines of evidence in understanding the Quaternary evolution of plants in topographically complex areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Natural menopause is defined as the permanent cessation of menstruation that occurs after 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea without any obvious pathological or physiological cause. The age of this phenomenon has been reported to be associated with several health outcomes. OBJECTIVES This study aimed to estimate the Age at Natural Menopause (ANM) and to identify reproductive and demographic factors affecting ANM. METHODS This cross-sectional, population-based study was conducted on 2517 post-menopausal women aged 40-70 years participating in the first phase of the PERSIAN cohort study of Kharameh, Iran, during 2014-2017. To more accurately detect the determinants of ANM, we applied multiple linear regression beside some machine learning algorithms including conditional tree, conditional forest, and random forest. Then, the fitness of these methods was compared using Mean Squared Error (MSE) and Pearson correlation coefficient. RESULTS The mean±SD of ANM was 48.95±6.13. Both applied forests provided more accurate results and identified more predictors. However, according to the final comparison, the conditional forest was the most accurate method which recognized that more pregnancies, longer breastfeeding, Fars ethnicity, and urbanization have the greatest impact on later ANM. CONCLUSIONS This study found a wide range of reproductive and demographic factors affecting ANM. Considering our findings in decision-making can reduce the complications related to this phenomenon and, consequently, improve the quality of life of post-menopausal women.

Abstract
Mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) recombination in animals has remained enigmatic due to its uniparental inheritance and subsequent homoplasmic state, which excludes the biological need for genetic recombination, as well as limits tools to study it. However, molecular recombination is an important genome maintenance mechanism for all organisms, most notably being required for double-strand break repair. To demonstrate the existence of mtDNA recombination, we took advantage of a cell model with two different types of mitochondrial genomes and impaired its ability to degrade broken mtDNA. The resulting excess of linear DNA fragments caused increased formation of cruciform mtDNA, appearance of heterodimeric mtDNA complexes and recombinant mtDNA genomes, detectable by Southern blot and by long range PacBio® HiFi sequencing approach. Besides utilizing different electrophoretic methods, we also directly observed molecular complexes between different mtDNA haplotypes and recombination intermediates using transmission electron microscopy. We propose that the known copy-choice recombination by mitochondrial replisome could be sufficient for the needs of the small genome, thus removing the requirement for a specialized mitochondrial recombinase. The error-proneness of this system is likely to contribute to the formation of pathological mtDNA rearrangements.

Abstract
The Miao group is one of the representative Hmong-Mien-speaking populations and primarily scattered in southern China and Southeast Asia, which has experienced massive migrations in history and thus forms distinctive evolutionary genetics. Yet, the genetic explorations of Miao group are relatively limited based on complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome), especially for the Miao group from Yunnan Province (YNM). Here, we sequenced complete mitogenomes of 132 Miao individuals from Yunnan Province using massively parallel sequencing method. Total 132 Miao individuals could be allocated to 119 various haplotypes, which were mainly dominated by haplogroups prevalent in southern East Asia (B, F, M7 and R9), and rarely occupied by northern lineages (A, D, G and M8). In order to dissect the genetic background of YNM more comprehensively, we introduced 99 published population data with 7135 complete mitochondrial sequences for population genetic comparisons. YNM exhibited closer genetic relationships with Hmong-Mien, Tai-Kadai, Sino-Tibetan and Austroasiatic populations, especially for Hmong-Mien populations; we further speculated that Miao group might have certain direct or indirect gene exchanges with ancient Baiyue groups. Several maternal lineages, such as B5a1c1a, F1g1, B4a5 and D4e1a3, were found to be specifically shared by YNM and other Hmong-Mien populations, and these matrilineal expansions occurred roughly during the Neolithic period. Eventually, according to the population dynamic analyses of YNM, the population size began to emerge recovery ∼1-0.5 kya after a long-term population reduction ∼1-5 kya, during which the B5a1c1a haplogroup manifested relatively apparent lineage expansion.

Abstract
Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a public health problem leading to an increased risk of fractures, negatively impacting women's health. The absence of sensitive and specific biomarkers for early detection of osteoporosis represents a substantial challenge for improving patient management. Herein, we aimed to identify potential candidate proteins associated with low bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women from the Mexican population. Serum samples from postmenopausal women (40 with normal BMD, 40 with osteopenia (OS), and 20 with osteoporosis (OP)) were analyzed by label-free LC-MS/MS quantitative proteomics. Proteome profiling revealed significant differences between the OS and OP groups compared to individuals with normal BMD. A quantitative comparison of proteins between groups indicated 454 differentially expressed proteins (DEPs). Compared to normal BMD, 14 and 214 DEPs were found in OS and OP groups, respectively, while 226 DEPs were identified between OS and OP groups. The protein-protein interaction and enrichment analysis of DEPs were closely linked to the bone mineral content, skeletal morphology, and immune response activation. Based on their role in bone metabolism, a panel of 12 candidate biomarkers was selected, of which 1 DEP (RYR1) was found upregulated in the OS and OP groups, 8 DEPs (APOA1, SHBG, FETB, MASP1, PTK2B, KNG1, GSN, and B2M) were upregulated in OP and 3 DEPs (APOA2, RYR3, and HBD) were downregulated in OS or OP. The proteomic analysis described here may help discover new and potentially non-invasive biomarkers for the early diagnosis of osteoporosis in postmenopausal women.

Abstract
Seasonally Dry Tropical Forests (SDTFs) located on limestone outcrops are vulnerable to degradation caused by timber logging and limestone extraction for cement production. Some of these forests represent the last remnants of native vegetation cover, functioning as isolated islands. Ceiba pubiflora (Malvaceae) is a tree frequently found on limestone outcrops in the central region of Brazil. This study aimed to evaluate the genetic diversity and identify suitable populations for the establishment of Management Units (MUs) for conservation. Inter-simple sequence repeat markers were employed to assess the genetic diversity in ten populations sampled from the Caatinga, Cerrado, and Atlantic Forest biomes. The species exhibited substantial genetic diversity (HT = 0.345; PLP = 97.89%). Populations SAH, JAN, and MON demonstrated elevated rates of polymorphic loci (> 84.2%) along with notable genetic diversity (He > 0.325). Additionally, these populations were the primary contributors to gene flow. The analysis of molecular variance (AMOVA) indicated that most genetic variation occurs within populations (91.5%) than between them. In the Bayesian analysis, the ten populations were clustered into five groups, revealing the presence of at least three barriers to gene flow in the landscape: 1) the Central Plateau or Paranã River valley; 2) near the Espinhaço mountains or the São Francisco River valley; and 3) around the Mantiqueira mountain range, Chapada dos Veadeiros plateau, and disturbed areas. A positive and statistically significant correlation was observed between genetic (θB) and geographic distances (r = 0.425, p = 0.008). Based on these findings, we propose the establishment of Management Units in Minas Gerais state, encompassing the (1) southern region (MIN population), (2) central region (SAH population), and (3) north region (MON population), as well as in Goiás state, covering the (4) Central Plateau region. These units can significantly contribute to preserving the genetic diversity of these trees and protecting their habitat against ongoing threats.

Abstract
Age estimation occupies a prominent niche in the identification process. In cases where skeletal remains present for examination, age is often estimated from markers distributed throughout the skeletal framework. Within the pelvis, the pubic symphysis constitutes one of the more commonly utilized skeletal markers for age estimation, with the Suchey-Brooks method comprising one of the more commonly employed methods for pubic symphyseal age estimation. The present study was targeted towards assessing the applicability of the Suchey-Brooks method for pubic symphyseal age estimation, an aspect largely unreported for an Indian population. In order to do so, clinically undertaken pelvic computed tomography scans of individuals were evaluated using the Suchey-Brooks method, and the error associated with the method was established using Bayesian analysis and different machine learning regression models. Amongst different supervised machine learning models, support vector regression and random forest furnished lowest error computations in both sexes. Using both Bayesian analysis and machine learning, lower error computations were observed in females, suggesting that the method demonstrates greater applicability for this sex. Inaccuracy and root mean square error obtained with Bayesian analysis and machine learning illustrates that both statistical modalities furnish comparable error computations for pubic symphyseal age estimation using the Suchey-Brooks method. However, given the numerous advantages associated with machine learning, it is recommended to use the same within medicolegal settings. Error computations obtained with the Suchey-Brooks method, regardless of the statistical modality utilized, indicate that the method should be used in amalgamation with additional markers to garner accurate estimates of age.

Abstract
This study presents a comprehensive analysis of 23 Y-STR data for the Merkit clan, a subgroup within the Kerey tribe of the Kazakh people. A total of 64 complete haplotypes were generated using the PowerPlex Y23 System. The data obtained using 23 Y-STR markers has been submitted to the Y Chromosome Haplotype Reference Database (YHRD) at yhrd.org, which will significantly enhance the forensic database for the Kazakh population in Kazakhstan. The research focuses on the distribution of haplotypes within the clan and their genealogical lines, which were visualized using a Median-joining network and Multidimensional scaling plot. The study identifies four distinct haplogroup clusters, revealing important insights into the genetic makeup and historical lineage of the Merkits. This dataset not only enriches our understanding of Kazakh genetic structure but also holds significant value for anthropological and population genetic research, as well as for forensic genetics. This work bridges a notable gap in genetic research on the Merkit clan, contributing to a deeper understanding of Central Asian nomadic tribes.

Abstract
Objective In a UK national census sample, women from the upper and lower socioeconomic (SES) classes achieve parity in completed family size, despite marked differences in both birth rates and offspring survival rates. We test the hypothesis that women adopt reproductive strategies that manipulate age at first reproduction to achieve this. Methods We use a Monte-Carlo modeling approach parameterized with current UK lifehistory data to simulate the reproductive lifehistories of 64,000 individuals from different SES classes, with parameter values at each successive time step drawn from a statistical distribution defined by the census data. Results We show that, if they are to achieve parity with women in the higher socioeconomic classes, women in lower socioeconomic classes must begin reproducing 5.65 years earlier on average than women in the higher SES classes in order to offset the higher class-specific mortality and infertility rates that they experience. The model predicts very closely the observed differences in age at first reproduction in the census data. Conclusions Opting to delay reproduction in order to purse an education-based professional career may be a high risk strategy that many lower SES women are unwilling and unable to pursue. As a result, reproducing as early as possible may be the best strategy available to them.

Abstract
Although still prevalent in many human societies, the practice of cousin marriage has precipitously declined in populations undergoing rapid demographic and socioeconomic change. However, it is still unclear whether changes in the structure of the marriage pool or changes in the fitness-relevant consequences of cousin marriage more strongly influence the frequency of cousin marriage. Here, we use genealogical data collected by the Tsimane Health and Life History Project to show that there is a small but measurable decline in the frequency of first cross-cousin marriage since the mid-twentieth century. Such changes are linked to concomitant changes in the pool of potential spouses in recent decades. We find only very modest differences in fitness-relevant demographic measures between first cousin and non-cousin marriages. These differences have been diminishing as the Tsimane have become more market integrated. The factors that influence preferences for cousin marriage appear to be less prevalent now than in the past, but cultural inertia might slow the pace of change in marriage norms. Overall, our findings suggest that cultural changes in marriage practices reflect underlying societal changes that shape the pool of potential spouses.

Abstract
Background Bipolar disorder (BD) presents with a wide range of symptoms that vary among relatives, casting doubt on categorical illness models. To address this uncertainly, we investigated the heritability and genetic relationships between categorical and dimensional models of BD in a family sample. Methods Participants in the Amish-Mennonite Bipolar Genetics (AMBiGen) study were assigned categorical mood disorder diagnoses by structured psychiatric interview and completed the Mood Disorder Questionnaire (MDQ), which assesses lifetime history of manic symptoms and associated impairment. Major MDQ dimensions were analyzed by Principal Component Analysis (PCA) in 726 participants. Heritability and genetic overlaps between categorical diagnoses and MDQ-derived dimensions were estimated with SOLAR-ECLIPSE within 432 genotyped participants. Results MDQ scores were significantly higher among individuals diagnosed with BD and related disorders, as expected, but varied widely among relatives. PCA suggested a three-component model for the MDQ. Heritability of the MDQ score was 30% (p<0.001), evenly distributed across its three principal components. Strong and significant genetic correlations were found between categorical diagnoses and most MDQ measures. Limitations Recruitment through probands with BD resulted in increased prevalence of BD in this sample, limiting generalizability. Unavailable genetic data reduced sample size for some analyses. Conclusion heritability and high genetic correlations between categorical diagnoses and MDQ measures support a genetic continuity between dimensional and categorical models of BD.

Abstract
As a crucial component of the male reproductive system, the epididymis plays multiple roles, including sperm storage and secretion of nutritive fluids for sperm development and maturation. The acquisition of fertilization capacity by sperm occurs during their transport through the epididymis. Compared with the testis, little has been realized about the importance of the epididymis. However, with the development of molecular biology and single-cell sequencing technology, the importance of the epididymis for male fertility should be reconsidered. Recent studies have revealed that different regions of the epididymis exhibit distinct functions and cell type compositions, which are likely determined by variations in gene expression patterns. In this research, we primarily focused on elucidating the cellular composition and region-specific gene expression patterns within different segments of the epididymis and provided detailed insights into epididymal function in male fertility.

Abstract
Without the ability to control or randomize environments (or genotypes), it is difficult to determine the degree to which observed phenotypic differences between two groups of individuals are due to genetic vs. environmental differences. However, some have suggested that these concerns may be limited to pathological cases, and methods have appeared that seem to give-directly or indirectly-some support to claims that aggregate heritable variation within groups can be related to heritable variation among groups. We consider three families of approaches: the "between-group heritability" sometimes invoked in behavior genetics, the statistic [Formula: see text] used in empirical work in evolutionary quantitative genetics, and methods based on variation in ancestry in an admixed population, used in anthropological and statistical genetics. We take up these examples to show mathematically that information on within-group genetic and phenotypic information in the aggregate cannot separate among-group differences into genetic and environmental components, and we provide simulation results that support our claims. We discuss these results in terms of the long-running debate on this topic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Exercise-associated secondary amenorrhea results in estrogen deficiency, which may lead to dysfunction in estrogen's normal cardioprotective pathways. Estrogen may be essential in a woman's endothelial adaptations to exercise. The objective of this review was to assess the association between secondary amenorrhea in physically active women and cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk. METHODS AND RESULTS A literature search was performed in January 2023 and updated in August 2023 of the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature (EBSCOhost), Cochrane Library, Embase (Ovid), MEDLINE (Ovid), SPORTDiscus (EBSCOhost), and Scopus from inception to present with no date or language limitations. Citation chaining was done to screen for additional studies. Eight sources were searched for gray literature. Studies that compared physically active women with amenorrhea to physically active women with eumenorrhea aged 18 to 35 years with evidence of CVD, alterations to cardiovascular physiology, or CVD risks were included. Eighteen observational studies from 3 countries were included. Overall, the quality of evidence was good. A meta-analysis was performed. Physically active women with secondary amenorrhea had significantly lower estradiol, flow-mediated dilation, resting heart rate, systolic blood pressure, and diastolic blood pressure and higher total cholesterol, triglycerides, high-density lipoprotein, and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol. CONCLUSIONS Estrogen deficiency resulting from exercise-associated secondary amenorrhea in physically active women may impact cardiovascular physiology and certain CVD risk factors. The research in this area is observational; therefore, findings should be interpreted cautiously. However, as exercise-associated secondary amenorrhea is reversible and the primary prevention of CVD is important for public health, it may be important to treat secondary amenorrhea and restore estrogen levels.

Abstract
Cape lions (Panthera leo melanochaitus) formerly ranged throughout the grassland plains of the "Cape Flats" in what is today known as the Western Cape Province, South Africa. Cape lions were likely eradicated because of overhunting and habitat loss after European colonization. European naturalists originally described Cape lions as "black-maned lions" and claimed that they were phenotypically distinct. However, other depictions and historical descriptions of lions from the Cape report mixed or light coloration and without black or extensively developed manes. These findings suggest that, rather than forming a distinct population, Cape lions may have had phenotypic and genotypic variation similar to other African lions. Here we investigate Cape lion genome characteristics, population dynamics, and genetic distinctiveness prior to their extinction. We generated genomic data from 2 historic Cape lions to compare to 118 existing high-coverage mitogenomes, and low-coverage nuclear genomes of 53 lions from 13 African countries. We show that, before their eradication, lions from the Cape Flats had diverse mitogenomes and nuclear genomes that clustered with lions from both southern and eastern Africa. Cape lions had high genome-wide heterozygosity and low inbreeding coefficients, indicating that populations in the Cape Flats went extinct so rapidly that genomic effects associated with long-term small population size and isolation were not detectable. Our findings do not support the characterization of Cape lions as phylogeographically distinct, as originally put forth by some European naturalists, and illustrates how alternative knowledge systems, for example, Indigenous perspectives, could potentially further inform interpretations of species histories.

Abstract
Heart failure is a commonly encountered clinical syndrome arising from a range of etiologic cardiovascular diseases and manifests in a phenotypic spectrum of varying degrees of systolic and diastolic ventricular dysfunction. Those affected by this life-limiting illness are subject to an array of burdensome symptoms, poor quality of life, prognostic uncertainty, and a relatively onerous and increasingly complex treatment regimen. This condition occurs in epidemic proportions worldwide, and given the demographic trend in societal ageing, the prevalence of heart failure is only likely to increase. The marked upturn in international migration has generated other demographic changes in recent years, and it is evident that we are living and working in ever more ethnically and culturally diverse communities. Professionals treating those with heart failure are now dealing with a much more culturally disparate clinical cohort. Given that the heart failure disease trajectory is unique to each individual, these clinicians need to ensure that their proposed treatment options and responses to the inevitable crises intrinsic to this condition are in keeping with the culturally determined values, preferences, and worldviews of these patients and their families. In this narrative review, we describe the importance of cultural awareness across a range of themes relevant to heart failure management and emphasize the centrality of cultural competence as the basis of appropriate care provision.

Abstract
Environmental factors such as mountain tectonic movements and monsoons can enhance genetic differentiation by hindering inter- and intra-specific gene flow. However, the phylogeographic breaks detected within species may differ depending on the different molecular markers used, and biological traits may be a major confounding factor. Pterocarya hupehensis is a vulnerable relict species distributed throughout the Sichuan Basin. Here, we investigated the phylogeographic patterns and evolutionary history of P. hupehensis using chloroplast DNA and restriction site-associated DNA sequencing data from 18 populations around the Sichuan Basin. The 24 chloroplast haplotypes separated into western and eastern lineages at approximately 16.7 Mya, largely coincident with a strengthening of the East Asian monsoon system during the early to middle Miocene. Both cpDNA and nuclear DNA datasets consistently identified distinct western and eastern lineages whose phylogeographic break conformed to the boundary of the Sino-Himalayan and Sino-Japanese forest sub-kingdoms. However, in contrast to the nuclear gene data, the cpDNA data revealed further divergence of the eastern lineage into northern and southern groups along the Yangtze River, a result that likely reflects differences in the extent of pollen vs seed dispersal. During the temperature decline in the penultimate (Riss) glacial period of the Pleistocene epoch, P. hupehensis experienced a genetic bottleneck event, and ecological niche modeling suggests that a subsequent population expansion occurred during the last interglacial period. Our findings not only establish a basis for conservation of this species, but also serve as a case study for the effects of geography and climate change on the evolutionary history of wind-pollinated relict plants.

Abstract
Introduction Elymus nutans holds ecological and pastoral significance due to its adaptability and nutritional value, the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau (QTP) is a key hub for its genetic diversity. To conserve and harness its genetic resources in highland ecosystems, a thorough assessment is vital. However, a comprehensive phylogeographic exploration of E. nutans is lacking. The objective of this study was to unravel the genetic diversity, adaptation, and phylogenetics of E. nutans populations. Methods Encompassing 361 individuals across 35 populations, the species' genetic landscape and dynamic responses to diverse environments were decoded by using four chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) sequences and nine microsatellite markers derived from the transcriptome. Results and discussion This study unveiled a notable degree of genetic diversity in E. nutans populations at nuclear (I = 0.46, He = 0.32) and plastid DNA levels (Hd = 0.805, π = 0.67). Analysis via AMOVA highlighted genetic variation predominantly within populations. Despite limited isolation by distance (IBD), the Mekong-Salween Divide (MSD) emerged as a significant factor influencing genetic differentiation and conserving diversity. Furthermore, correlations were established between external environmental factors and effective alleles of three EST-SSRs (EN5, EN57 and EN80), potentially linked to glutathione S-transferases T1 or hypothetical proteins, affecting adaptation. This study deepens the understanding of the intricate relationship between genetic diversity, adaptation, and environmental factors within E. nutans populations on the QTP. The findings shed light on the species' evolutionary responses to diverse ecological conditions and contribute to a broader comprehension of plant adaptation mechanisms.

Abstract
In 1954, Allison proposed that hemoglobin S (HbS) gene causes protection against fatal malaria. This would explain the high HbS gene frequency observed in certain regions hyperendemic for malaria, so-called "malaria hypothesis". This in silico study was conducted to examine the feasibility of the hypothesis under more realistic initial conditions, where a mutant gene with heterozygous advantage against malaria (e.g., HbS) was introduced in a group of Neolithic hunter-gatherers who decided to start agriculture nearby water where malaria killed a proportion of population. The tribe population size, number of children born to each woman in each generation, mortality from malaria and sickle cell disease, the protection factor provided by the gene carriers against malaria, the probability of mating between the members of the parent and offspring populations, population growth, and increased fertility in women heterozygous for HbS, were also considered. For effectively confer protection against malaria within the shortest possible period, the mutation needs to be happened in a small population. For a large population, the process would take around 100 generations (~ 2500 years) or more to provide an effective protection. Even then, the probability that the new gene could survive and propagate to future generations is about 35%. Conventional population genetics equations with differential or difference equations, give totally incorrect estimates of the gene frequency in small populations; discrete mathematics should be used, instead. After introduction of the advantageous mutation, the gene frequency increased until a steady state value. This value is far less than the gene frequency reported in certain tribes of Africa. It seems that the malaria hypothesis, per se, could not explain such a high observed gene frequency, unless HbS is associated with lower mortality from other causes too.

Abstract
BACKGROUND This study aims to investigate the roles of telocytes on the metastatic properties of breast cancer stem cells (CSCs), and to re-evaluate the effect of miR-21-5p expression on CSCs following the addition of telocytes. METHODS AND RESULTS Telocytes from human bone marrow mononuclear cells were isolated/characterised. This was followed by the isolation/characterisation of CSCs from the MDA-MB-231. miR-21-5p was both overexpressed/inhibited in CSCs. Through co-culture studies, EMT transition and oncogenic properties of CSCs were investigated by analysing changes in ALDH1 and vimentin protein levels as well as changes in the ABCC11, SNAI1, LZTFL1, Oct 3/4, E- and N-cadherin gene expression levels. With the inhibition of miR-21-5p, significant increases in LZTFL and ABCC11 were observed with the addition of telocytes. The expression of the LZTFL gene, which decreased with the overexpression of miR-21-5p, increased in CSCs after co-culture with telocytes. While an increase expression of ABCC11, SNAI1, N-Cadherin, vimentin and ALDH was observed in CSCs after overexpression of miR-21-5p, significant decreases in these expressions were observed after co-culture with telocyte. CONCLUSIONS In our study, by gene/protein level analysis we demonstrated that telocytes may have the potential to reduce cancer metastasis through miR-21-5p in breast cancer progression and reduce EMT transition.

Abstract
Age at menarche is not only a parameter that signifies biological characteristics for women but is also considered as an indicator to measure the quality of life of a population. Moreover, menarche has significant implications on women's health and information about menarcheal age is crucial for health policymakers. However, little is known about the trends in menarcheal age in India. Thus, in order to fill this research gap, the present study aimed to explore the age at menarche, its trend and regional heterogeneity among Indian women. A birth cohort approach was used by polling data from the 1st (1992-93), 4th (2015-16) and 5th (2019-21) rounds of NFHS. Descriptive statistics and bivariate analyses were performed to present the distribution of age at menarche and mean age at menarche across birth cohorts and each category of covariates. A multiple linear regression model was fitted to examine the trend in age at menarche and further to investigate the association of covariates with menarcheal age among Indian women. The analysis demonstrated that a majority of women (66.2%) attained menarche between the ages of 13-14 years. Moreover, about 17.2% of women experienced an early age at menarche, whereas 16.7% of women had a late age at menarche. The mean age at menarche for the sampled women was 13.49 years. The analysis also observed a secular declining trend in menarcheal age among Indian women and a significant variation in the mean age at menarche across birth cohorts. It also highlighted significant socio-economic patterning in menarcheal age among women.

Abstract
BACKGROUND "Curved hair" caused by acquired factors is considered to have adverse cosmetic effects, but the detailed mechanism behind curved hair remains obscure. OBJECTIVE We attempted to clarify the causes of curved hair that appeared to have occurred via acquired factors. METHODS Outer root sheath cells (ORSC) isolated from plucked human hair follicles were used to evaluate the expression of type IV collagen. Straight and curved hairs with hair follicle tissue attached were also collected from the same individuals and subjected to morphological, immunohistochemical, and gene expression analyses. RESULTS The amount of type IV collagen increased upon inducing endoplasmic reticulum stress in ORSC. Meanwhile, in curved hair follicle tissue, the gene expression of type IV collagen decreased. In addition, the curved hair follicle tissue obtained from participants in their 30 s to 50 s had distorted shapes compared with that of straight hair from the same individuals. It was also observed that hair matrix cells based on multiple hair germs fused to eventually form a single hair follicle and hair shaft. In curved hair follicle tissue, KRT71 protein, a marker of inner root sheath differentiation, was unevenly distributed and there was elevated expression of Dickkopf-1 (DKK1) protein, an inhibitor of the Wnt signaling pathway. CONCLUSION Our study revealed the fusion of hair matrix cells during hair follicle regeneration as a cause of acquired curved hair. We consider that such fusion causes hair follicle tissue to abnormally differentiate, resulting in asymmetric hair follicle shapes and curved hair.

Abstract
The origins of treponemal diseases have long remained unknown, especially considering the sudden onset of the first syphilis epidemic in the late 15th century in Europe and its hypothesized arrival from the Americas with Columbus' expeditions1,2. Recently, ancient DNA evidence has revealed various treponemal infections circulating in early modern Europe and colonial-era Mexico3-6. However, there has been to our knowledge no genomic evidence of treponematosis recovered from either the Americas or the Old World that can be reliably dated to the time before the first trans-Atlantic contacts. Here, we present treponemal genomes from nearly 2,000-year-old human remains from Brazil. We reconstruct four ancient genomes of a prehistoric treponemal pathogen, most closely related to the bejel-causing agent Treponema pallidum endemicum. Contradicting the modern day geographical niche of bejel in the arid regions of the world, the results call into question the previous palaeopathological characterization of treponeme subspecies and showcase their adaptive potential. A high-coverage genome is used to improve molecular clock date estimations, placing the divergence of modern T. pallidum subspecies firmly in pre-Columbian times. Overall, our study demonstrates the opportunities within archaeogenetics to uncover key events in pathogen evolution and emergence, paving the way to new hypotheses on the origin and spread of treponematoses.

Abstract
Research utilizing event-related potential (ERP) methods is generally biased with regard to sample representativeness. Among the myriad of factors that contribute to sample bias are researchers' assumptions about the extent to which racial differences in hair texture, volume, and style impact electrode placement, and subsequently, study eligibility. The current study examines these impacts using data collected from n = 213 individuals ages 17-19 years, and offers guidance on collection of ERP data across the full spectrum of hair types. Individual differences were quantified for hair texture using a visual scale, and for hair volume by measuring the amount of gel used in cap preparation. Electroencephalography data quality was assessed with multiple metrics at the preprocessing, post-processing, and variable generation stages. Results indicate that hair volume is associated with small, but systematic differences in signal quality and signal amplitude. Such differences are highly problematic as they could be misattributed to cognitive differences among groups. However, inclusion of gel volume as a covariate to account for individual differences in hair volume significantly reduced, and in most cases eliminated, group differences. We discuss strategies for overcoming real and perceived technical barriers for researchers seeking to achieve greater inclusivity and representativeness in ERP research.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Menstrual disorders are among the most prevalent health issues among young female students studying in health science faculties. This study aimed to provide insights into the menstrual patterns among medical faculty students and determine whether stress can be a risk factor for its various disorders. METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted in the Faculties of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy at the Syrian Private University, Damascus, Syria, between October and November 2022. A total of 980 female students anonymously completed the identification of menstrual problems and the perceived stress scale (PSS) questionnaire. The data were analyzed using SPSS-25. RESULTS The mean age of students was 21.52 ± 2.06 years. The most common menstrual disorders in this study were dysmenorrhea (88%), and premenstrual syndrome (87%). A total of 82% had mild to moderate stress, 10% had high stress, and 8% had low stress. Moderate to high perceived stress was associated with an increased risk of PMS (OR = 1.79, P = 0.0037). CONCLUSION These findings stress the importance of universities, especially health science faculties, establishing protocols for early detection and intervention in students with stress and menstrual disorders. Implementing stress reduction education and timely counseling, along with preventive measures, is crucial for students' well-being. Further research is needed to refine interventions for this group.

Abstract
The field of human biology has long explored how human populations have adapted to extreme environmental circumstances. Yet, it has become increasingly clear that conditions of social stress, poverty, and lifestyle change play equally important roles in shaping human biological variation and health. In this paper, I provide a brief background on the foundational human adaptability research of the International Biological Programme (IBP) from the 1960s, highlighting how its successes and critiques have shaped current research directions in the field. I then discuss and reflect on my own field research that has examined the influence of both environmental and social stresses on human populations living in different ecosystems: the Peruvian Andes, the Siberian arctic, and the Bolivian rainforest. Finally, I consider how the papers in this special issue advance our understanding of human adaptability to extreme conditions and offer directions for future research. Drawing on our field's distinctive evolutionary and biocultural perspectives, human biologists are uniquely positioned to examine how the interplay between social and ecological domains influences the human condition.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The Greenlandic population has one of the world's highest prevalence of otitis media (OM). Approximately 9-14% of all children suffer from OM during childhood. Due to the climate, lack of infrastructure, and minimal access to specialist services, the Greenlandic healthcare system operates under significant challenges. To support treatment implementation, we explored parental experiences of having a child with recurrent acute otitis media (rAOM) and chronic suppurative otitis media in Greenland (CSOM). METHODS We applied a qualitative methodology with semi-structured interviews, to investigate parents' individual experiences. We included parents from six selected towns and settlements in Greenland, who were primary caregivers to minimum one child who had suffered from rAOM or CSOM. The interviews followed a semi-structured interview guide. RESULTS Eight interviews were conducted with ten parents (nine mothers, one father) to 13 children (nine girls, four boys) aged two to 20 years (median age five years). We carried out a hermeneutic-phenomenological, Ricoeur-inspired text analysis of data. The first episode of OM was associated with uncertainty about the condition, including pain relief and treatment. However, recurrence led to symptom recognition and a changed disease perception among the parents: from being a simple case of childhood OM to a recognition of a chronic condition that might lead to delayed linguistic development and hearing impairment. CONCLUSION Under difficult healthcare situations, parents represented a unique resource in care and treatment implementation. Parents often feel alone with the responsibility of care and had concerns for their child's hearing and language development, and they wished for their experiences and observations to be actively included in consultations.

Abstract
Indigenous peoples around the world suffer from health disparities attributed to a plethora of risk factors and social determinants of health stemming from colonialism and systemic oppression. Community-based health interventions have been identified as a means for addressing and reducing Indigenous health disparities by allowing for Indigenous sovereignty to be respected and centered. However, sovereignty relating to Indigenous health and well-being is underresearched. The present article explores the role of sovereignty in Indigenous community-based health interventions. A qualitative metasynthesis was conducted among 14 primary research studies co-authored by Indigenous people describing and evaluating Indigenous community-based health interventions. Five conceptual themes emerged as aspects of sovereignty which benefit Indigenous health and well-being outcomes: integration of culture; relocation of knowledge; connectedness; self-actualization; and stewardship. Implications are discussed, with the goal of creating a decolonial framework rooted in Indigenous epistemologies and perspectives for how sovereignty impacts Indigenous health, as well as strengthening a clear need for further research on and praxis of sovereignty in Indigenous healthcare.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Glutathione S-transferases (GSTs) play important roles in protecting cells against oxidative stress and toxic chemicals. This study aimed to investigate the distribution of GSTM1, GSTT1, and GSTP1 variants and their roles in periodontitis susceptibility in a Caucasian population. METHODS We analyzed 406 participants, including 204 healthy controls and 203 periodontitis patients. A multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR) approach was used to analyze GSTM1 and GSTT1 loci. GSTP1 variants were detected by PCR-haplotyping method in a subgroup of participants (N = 350). Chi-square or Fisher´s exact tests were used to compare genotypic and allelic differences. The Bonferroni method was applied to correct for multiple comparisons (pcorr). RESULTS The GSTM1 genotype distribution did not differ significantly between controls and periodontitis patients (p = 0.44). Additionally, the wild/null genotypes of GSTT1, Ile105Val and Ala114Val frequencies of GSTP1 were not significantly different between the two groups after correction for multiple comparisons (p = 0.05, p = 0.55, p = 0.02, pcorr>0.05, respectively). The GSTM1 and GSTP1 Ile105Val gene variants were similarly distributed between non-smokers and smokers in both groups (p = 0.38, p = 0.20, and p = 0.14, p = 0.35, respectively). However, the wild genotype of the GSTT1 and Ala114Ala variant of the GSTP1 genes were present more frequently in non-smoking periodontitis patients than in non-smoking controls (p = 0.03, pcorr>0.05, and p = 0.009, pcorr>0.05, respectively) although their frequencies did not differ between smoking periodontitis patients and smoking controls (p = 0.23, p = 0.68, respectively). CONCLUSIONS This study in a Czech Caucasian population did not confirm a highly significant association between GST gene variants and susceptibility to periodontitis, as previously reported by Arshad and colleagues in Pakistanis. However, a weak relationship between GSTT1 and GSTP1 rs1138272 polymorphisms and periodontitis in non-smokers was observed.

Abstract
Admixture mapping has been useful in identifying genetic variations linked to phenotypes, adaptation and diseases. Copy number variations (CNVs) represents genomic structural variants spanning large regions of chromosomes reaching several megabases. In this investigation, the "Canary" algorithm was applied to 102 Tunisian samples and 991 individuals from eleven HapMap III populations to genotype 1279 copy number polymorphisms (CNPs). In this present work, we investigate the Tunisian population structure using the CNP makers previously identified among Tunisian. The study revealed that Sub-Saharan African populations exhibited the highest diversity with the highest proportions of allelic CNPs. Among all the African populations, Tunisia showed the least diversity. Individual ancestry proportions computed using STRUCTURE analysis revealed a major European component among Tunisians with lesser contribution from Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. Population structure analysis indicated the genetic proximity with Europeans and noticeable distance from the Sub-Saharan African and East Asian clusters. Seven genes harbouring Tunisian high-frequent CNPs were identified known to be associated with 9 Mendelian diseases and/or phenotypes. Functional annotation of genes under selection highlighted a noteworthy enrichment of biological processes to receptor pathway and activity as well as glutathione metabolism. Additionally, pathways of potential concern for health such as drug metabolism, infectious diseases and cancers exhibited significant enrichment. The distinctive genetic makeup of the Tunisians might have been influenced by various factors including natural selection and genetic drift, resulting in the development of distinct genetic variations playing roles in specific biological processes. Our research provides a justification for focusing on the exclusive genome organization of this population and uncovers previously overlooked elements of the genome.

Abstract
Numerous studies have revealed that past geological events and climatic fluctuations had profoundly affected the genetic structure and demographic patterns of species. However, related species with overlapping ranges may have responded to such environmental changes in different ways. In this study, we compared the genetic structure and population dynamics of two typical desert shrubs with overlapping distributions in northern China, Nitraria tangutorum and Nitraria sphaerocarpa, based on chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) variations and species distribution models. We sequenced two cpDNA fragments (trnH-trnA and atpH-atpI) in 633 individuals sampled from 52 natural populations. Twenty-four chlorotypes, including eight rare chlorotypes, were identified, and a single dominant haplotype (H4) widely occurred in the entire geographical ranges of the two species. There were also a few distinctive chlorotypes fixed in different geographical regions. Population structure analyses suggested that the two species had significantly different levels of total genetic diversity and interpopulation differentiation, which was highly likely correlated with the special habitat preferences of the two species. A clear phylogeographic structure was identified to exist among populations of N. sphaerocarpa, but not exist for N. tangutorum. The neutral tests, together with the distribution of pairwise differences revealed that N. tangutorum experienced a sudden demographic expansion, and its expansion approximately occurred between 21 and 7 Kya before present, while a rapid range expansion was not identified for N. sphaerocarpa. The ecological niche modeling (ENM) analysis indicated that the potential ranges of two species apparently fluctuated during the past and present periods, with obvious contraction in the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM) and recolonization in the present, respectively, comparing to the Last Interglacial (LIG). These findings suggest that the two species extensively occurred in the Northwest of China before the Quaternary, and the current populations of them originated from a few separated glacial refugia following their habitat fragmentation in the Quarternary. Our results provide new insights on the impact of past geological and climatic fluctuations on the population dynamics of desert plants in northwestern China, and further enforce the hypothesis that there were several independent glacial refugia for these species during the Quaternary glaciations.

Abstract
Hindus and Muslims represent the two largest religions in India, and also differ in nutritional status, health-related habits and standard of living associated with economic disparities. In this context, the present study considered estimated secular changes in body size, proportions, and weight status among Hindu and Muslim Indian men. The data are from anthropological surveys in the 1970s which included measurements of height, weight and sitting height of 43,950 males 18-84 years (birth years 1891-1957). Leg length was estimated; the BMI and sitting height/height ratio were calculated. Heights of men 35 + years were adjusted for estimated height loss with age. Weight status was also classified relative to WHO criteria for the BMI. Anthropometric characteristics of the two groups were compared with MANCOVA with age and geographic region as covariates. Linear regression of height on year of birth was also used to estimate secular change in each group. Heights, weights, and BMIs tended to be, on average, greater among Muslim than Hindu men at most ages, while distributions by weight status between groups were negligible. Sitting height was greater among Muslim men but estimated leg length did not differ between groups; the sitting height/height ratio thus suggested proportionally shorter legs among Muslim men. Results of the regression analyses indicated negligible differences in secular change between groups across the total span of birth years but indicated a decline in adjusted heights of men in both groups born between 1891 through 1930s and little secular change among those born in the 1930s through 1957. The variation in heights, weights and BMIs between Muslim and Hindu men at most ages suggested variation in socio-economic status and dietary habits between the groups, whereas the negligible estimated secular changes in height between groups likely reflected economic, social, and nutritional conditions during the interval of British rule and the transition to independence.

Abstract
One excellent illustration of how a single gene abnormality may result in a spectrum of disease incidence is the incredible phenotypic variety of β-thalassemia, which spans from severe anemia and transfusion needs to an utterly asymptomatic sickness. However, genetic causes of β-thalassemia and how the anemia's severity might be altered at various stages in its pathophysiology have been well investigated. There are currently known to be more than 350 mutations that cause genetic disease. However only 20 β thalassemia mutations account for more than 80% of the β thalassemia mutation across the globe due to phenomenon of geographical clustering where each population has a few common mutations together with a varying number of rare ones. Due to migration of the population, the spectrum of thalassemia mutation in changing from time to time. In this review, efforts are made to collate β globin gene mutations in different countries and populations.

Abstract
Purpose This study was designed and conducted to validate the reference values of hematological parameters for healthy adult male and female residents of Kabul city, Afghanistan. Methodology In this cross-sectional study, the samples were collected according to a non-random sampling method. Blood samples were collected from students and employees of Kabul University. The study included 166 males and 125 females, aged 18-45 years. The selection and exclusion of participants were carried out according to a questionnaire and the assessment of serum ferritin and vitamin B12 levels. Candidates with lower serum ferritin and vitamin B12, a history of chronic disease, females with menstruation or pregnancy, and those with chronic abdominal pain were excluded. Results Reference ranges for all blood parameters were determined by a non-parametric method. The determined reference values were compared between males and females by the Z-test. Reference intervals for hemoglobin (4.5-6.3 g/dL for males and 3.66-5.67 g/dL for females) and hematocrit (36.23-55.93% for males and 30.20-53.86% for females) were significantly (p<0.05) higher in males. No significant (p<0.05) differences were observed between the reference intervals for the red blood cell count. Conclusion Therefore, we conclude that the commonly used reference intervals should be revised for the Afghan population, as our findings indicated higher reference values for the hemoglobin and hematocrit indices.

Abstract
In humans, there are two arylamine N-acetyltransferase genes that encode functional enzymes (NAT1 and NAT2) as well as one pseudogene, all of which are located together on chromosome 8. Although they were first identified by their role in the acetylation of drugs and other xenobiotics, recent studies have shown strong associations for both enzymes in a variety of diseases, including cancer, cardiovascular disease, and diabetes. There is growing evidence that this association may be causal. Consistently, NAT1 and NAT2 are shown to be required for healthy mitochondria. This review discusses the current literature on the role of both NAT1 and NAT2 in mitochondrial bioenergetics. It will attempt to relate our understanding of the evolution of the two genes with biologic function and then present evidence that several major metabolic diseases are influenced by NAT1 and NAT2. Finally, it will discuss current and future approaches to inhibit or enhance NAT1 and NAT2 activity/expression using small-molecule drugs. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: The arylamine N-acetyltransferases (NATs) NAT1 and NAT2 share common features in their associations with mitochondrial bioenergetics. This review discusses mitochondrial function as it relates to health and disease, and the importance of NAT in mitochondrial function and dysfunction. It also compares NAT1 and NAT2 to highlight their functional similarities and differences. Both NAT1 and NAT2 are potential drug targets for diseases where mitochondrial dysfunction is a hallmark of onset and progression.

Abstract
Background Knowledge of the physical and environmental conditions that may limit the migration of invasive species is crucial to assess the potential for expansion outside their native ranges. The cactus moth, Cactoblastis cactorum, is native to South America (Argentina, Paraguay, Uruguay and Brazil) and has been introduced and invaded the Caribbean and southern United States, among other regions. In North America there is an ongoing process of range expansion threatening cacti biodiversity of the genus Opuntia and the commercial profits of domesticated Opuntia ficus-indica. Methods To further understand what influences the distribution and genetic structure of this otherwise important threat to native and managed ecosystems, in the present study we combined ecological niche modeling and population genetic analyses to identify potential environmental barriers in the native region of Argentina. Samples were collected on the host with the wider distribution range, O. ficus-indica. Results Significant genetic structure was detected using 10 nuclear microsatellites and 24 sampling sites. At least six genetic groups delimited by mountain ranges, salt flats and wetlands were mainly located to the west of the Dry Chaco ecoregion. Niche modeling supports that this region has high environmental suitability where the upper soil temperature and humidity, soil carbon content and precipitation were the main environmental factors that explain the presence of the moth. Environmental filters such as the upper soil layer may be critical for pupal survival and consequently for the establishment of populations in new habitats, whereas the presence of available hosts is a necessary conditions for insect survival, upper soil and climatic characteristics will determine the opportunities for a successful establishment.

Abstract
Without the ability to control or randomize environments (or genotypes), it is difficult to determine the degree to which observed phenotypic differences between two groups of individuals are due to genetic vs. environmental differences. However, some have suggested that these concerns may be limited to pathological cases, and methods have appeared that seem to give-directly or indirectly-some support to claims that aggregate heritable variation within groups can be related to heritable variation among groups. We consider three families of approaches: the "between-group heritability" sometimes invoked in behavior genetics, the statistic P S T used in empirical work in evolutionary quantitative genetics, and methods based on variation in ancestry in an admixed population, used in anthropological and statistical genetics. We take up these examples to show mathematically that information on within-group genetic and phenotypic information in the aggregate cannot separate among-group differences into genetic and environmental components, and we provide simulation results that support our claims. We discuss these results in terms of the long-running debate on this topic.

Abstract
Genetic variations in the human genome represent the differences in DNA sequence within individuals. This highlights the important role of whole human genome sequencing which has become the keystone for precision medicine and disease prediction. Morocco is an important hub for studying human population migration and mixing history. This study presents the analysis of 3 Moroccan genomes; the variant analysis revealed 6 379 606 single nucleotide variants (SNVs) and 1 050 577 small InDels. Of those identified SNVs, 219 152 were novel, with 1233 occurring in coding regions, and 5580 non-synonymous single nucleotide variants (nsSNP) variants were predicted to affect protein functions. The InDels produced 1055 coding variants and 454 non-3n length variants, and their size ranged from -49 and 49 bp. We further analysed the gene pathways of 8 novel coding variants found in the 3 genomes and revealed 5 genes involved in various diseases and biological pathways. We found that the Moroccan genomes share 92.78% of African ancestry, and 92.86% of Non-Finnish European ancestry, according to the gnomAD database. Then, population structure inference, by admixture analysis and network-based approach, revealed that the studied genomes form a mixed population structure, highlighting the increased genetic diversity in Morocco.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND AIM premature ovarian insufficiency (POI) is defined as the menopause before 40 years of age, and its prevalence is reported to be two-fold higher in Iranian women than the average for woman globally. POI is associated with several cardio/cerebrovascular complications as well as an increased overall mortality. Genetic factors, and serum levels of minerals and vitamin D, have been reported to be related to the prevalence of POI. We have investigated the association between some POI -related genotypes with the serum levels of some important micronutrients. METHODS One hundred and seventeen women with POI and 183 controls without any renal, hepatic, and thyroid abnormalities were recruited as part of the MASHAD study. Demographic and anthropometric features were recorded and blood samples were collected and processed. DNA was extracted from the buffy coat of blood samples from all participants and 8 POI-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were determined using ASO-PCR or Tetra ARMS-PCR. Serum minerals and vitamin D concentrations were measured using routine methods. RESULTS In women with POI, serum copper, phosphate, and calcium were significantly different for those with rs244715, rs16991615, and rs4806660 genotypes, respectively. In our control population, significant differences were also found in serum copper concentrations between different genotypes of rs4806660, rs7246479, rs1046089, and rs2303369. After adjusting for all confounding factors, the women with POI carrying TC genotype (rs4806660) had a lower risk to have serum copper levels < 80 (µg/dL) than those carrying a TT genotype. Furthermore, women with POI carrying GG genotype (rs244715) had a 6-fold higher risk to have serum copper levels > 155 than those carrying AA genotype. CONCLUSION The C and G alleles of the rs4806660 and rs244715 polymorphisms respectively are independently associated with serum copper in women with POI. Further studies are necessary to investigate the association of serum copper and other micronutrients in women and other POI -related polymorphisms.

Abstract
Western Palearctic treefrogs of the genus Hyla provide an example of a morphologically and ecologically cryptic group. Up to three distinct Hyla species have been proposed as resident in Israel and this number has consistently been subject to taxonomical debates. Here, we analyzed 16S rRNA and COI gene fragments of 658 individuals sampled at 47 pools in nine regions across Israel and the West Bank in order to resolve the taxonomic status of Hyla frogs. We generated both Bayesian and Maximum Likelihood phylogenies, and constructed time-calibrated trees to provide an evolutionary and historical context of sequence variations. We further applied SAMOVA as well as Monmonier's maximum-difference algorithm to study the genetic structure among populations and to identify potential zones acting as barriers to gene flow across locations. Our results revealed two distinct haplogroups for each gene fragment, with 95% CI divergence times dated from 8.9-17.1 Mya (16S) and 7.1-23.6 Mya (COI), respectively. SAMOVA and barrier analyses partitioned the populations into three groups. Our results highlight that, while there are probably only two Hyla species in Israel, one population of one of the species might qualify as a separate evolutionarily significant unit. Our findings elucidate the taxonomic status of Hyla frogs in Israel and provide the basis for determining appropriate management and conservation priorities.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES In Quebec, genetic and genealogical research are used to document migratory events and family structures since colonial times, because bioarchaeological analysis is limited by poor skeletal preservation. This article aims to fill this gap by exploring past population structure in the St-Lawrence Valley from the French (1683-1760) and British (1760-1867) regimes using morphological variation of well-preserved temporal bones. MATERIALS AND METHODS 3D geometric morphometrics shape data from seven populations (five Catholics of French descent and two Protestants of British descent; n = 214) were collected from temporal bones. Using Procrustes distances and both MANOVA and Discriminant Function Analysis, morphological differences were measured to calculate affinities patterns among populations. Shape variations were explored with between-group analysis, Mahalanobis distances and quantified by means of Fst estimates using Relethford-Blangero analysis. RESULTS Despite strong affinities between all Catholic cemeteries, all show divergent morphological regional diversity -especially Montreal and the fortified villages dedicated to its defense. Montreal exhibits low increase in morphological variance over three centuries. As our results show no morphological differences between the Catholic and the Protestant cemeteries in Montreal, this fact may highlight the potential presence of Irish or admixed individuals in Montreal cemeteries after the British takeover. DISCUSSION Patterns of morphological diversity highlighted that French colonists did not equally contribute to the descendant populations as reflected by significant interregional variation. Although historical records show that French and English-speaking populations did not tend to admix, morphological affinities between Protestants and Catholics in the beginning of the industrial era in Montreal could reflect the genetic contribution of Catholic Irish migrants. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS All Catholic cemeteries display distinct morphologies, highlighting differential contributions from French colonists and founder effects, which have increased regional differences. Montreal Catholic (French descent) and Protestant (English colonists) cemeteries show significant morphological affinities at the beginning of the industrial era. The Irish migration following the British conquest may explain morphological similarities observed between Catholic and Protestant cemeteries.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective of this review is to assess the association between secondary amenorrhea in physically active women and cardiovascular disease risk. INTRODUCTION It is well established that a woman's risk of cardiovascular disease greatly increases after menopause. The sharp decline in estrogen is seen as a causal factor. Exercise-induced secondary amenorrhea results in estrogen deficiency, which may lead to dysfunction in estrogen's cardioprotective pathways. Further, estrogen may be essential in a woman's endothelial adaptations to exercise. The impact of secondary amenorrhea on cardiovascular disease risk in premenopausal women is not well established. INCLUSION CRITERIA This review will consider studies that include physically active women experiencing amenorrhea in any country. Only studies that present evidence of cardiovascular disease, alterations to cardiovascular physiology, or data on cardiovascular risk factors (eg, lipid profile changes) will be considered. The review will consider experimental or observational epidemiological study designs. METHODS Searches will be conducted in CINAHL (EBSCOhost), the Cochrane Library, Embase (Ovid), MEDLINE (Ovid), SPORTDiscus (EBSCOhost), and Scopus from inception to present with no date or language limitations. Two independent reviewers will screen titles, abstracts, and full texts, appraise methodological quality, and extract data from studies. Where possible, studies will be pooled in a statistical meta-analysis in addition to subgroup analyses. Where pooling is not possible, the findings will be presented in narrative format. Certainty of the evidence will be assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. REVIEW REGISTRATION PROSPERO CRD42023360781.

Abstract
Kicking a person laying on the floor in the head is a crime whose forensic investigation could profit from additional microtraces capable of linking a suspected footwear, and by extension its owner, to the victim and their injuries. The transfer of hair fixatives (hair gel, hair wax, hair spray, hair foam, etc.) represents such a trace and was consequently practically evaluated throughout this study. This study consists of two parts: The first part, the differentiation study, encompasses the visual, and instrumental analysis of a variety of different hair fixatives to determine their analysability and differentiation potential. The visual examination was conducted using alternate light sources and filter lenses. Subsequently, the instrumental analysis was carried out, whereby the focus lay on Fourier Transform Infra-red (FT-IR) spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy. The second part is comprised of different experiments including a test-transfer and pendulum experiments to assess the process and the potential variables of the transfer of hair fixative traces between hair and fabric shoes during a kick. This helped to determine the effect of the kick strength and the behaviour of differing hair products. Retrieval methods to secure hair fixative traces of footwear and from the hair of a victim were developed. These were subsequently tested out on an acute case example..

Abstract
Individual human hair fibers exhibiting a curly morphology were procured from a female donor within her early thirties (30s). The selected hair fibers donor had refrained from undergoing any form of chemical treatment, including dyeing, relaxing, and bleaching, for a minimum period of six (6) months prior to specimen collection. The isolated single fibers were subjected to uniaxial tensile testing at various strain rates (100.s-1,10-2. s-1 10-3. & 10-4.s-1). Furthermore, the specimens underwent testing under dry conditions at a temperature of 25°C, as well as full immersion in a saline solution at both 25°C and 35°C. The ensuing mechanical attributes, encompassing engineering was analyzed following the tensile testing.

Abstract
Preeclampsia is a pregnancy-specific disorder, and it is a leading cause of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. The application of pharmacogenetics to antihypertensive agents and dose selection in women with preeclampsia is still in its infancy. No current prescribing guidelines from the clinical pharmacogenetics implementation consortium (CPIC) exist for preeclampsia. Although more studies on pharmacogenomics are underway, there is some evidence for the pharmacogenomics of preeclampsia therapies, considering both the pharmacokinetic (PK) and pharmacodynamic (PD) properties of drugs used in preeclampsia. It has been revealed that the CYP2D6*10 variant is significantly higher in women with preeclampsia who are non-responsive to labetalol compared to those who are in the responsive group. Various genetic variants of PD targets, i.e., NOS3, MMP9, MMP2, TIMP1, TIMP3, VEGF, and NAMPT, have been investigated to assess the responsiveness of antihypertensive therapies in preeclampsia management, and they indicated that certain genetic variants of MMP9, TIMP1, and NAMPT are more frequently observed in those who are non-responsive to anti-hypertensive therapies compared to those who are responsive. Further, gene-gene interactions have revealed that NAMPT, TIMP1, and MMP2 genotypes are associated with an increased risk of preeclampsia, and they are more frequently observed in the non-responsive subgroup of women with preeclampsia. The current evidence is not rigorous enough for clinical implementation; however, an institutional or regional-based retrospective analysis of audited data may help close the knowledge gap during the transitional period from a traditional approach (a "one-size-fits-all" strategy) to the pharmacogenomics of preeclampsia therapies.

Abstract
Activity-dependent neuroprotective protein (ADNP) is essential for neurodevelopment and de novo mutations in ADNP cause the ADNP syndrome. From brain pathologies point of view, tauopathy has been demonstrated at a young age, implying stunted development coupled with early/accelerated neurodegeneration. Given potential genotype-phenotype differences and age-dependency, we have assessed here a cohort of 15 individuals (1-27-year-old), using 1-3 longitudinal parent (caretaker) interview/s (Vineland 3 questionnaire) over several years. Our results indicated developmental delays, or even developmental arrests, coupled with potential spurts of development at early ages. Severe outcomes correlated with the truncating high impact mutation, in other words, the remaining mutated protein length as well as with the tested individual age, corroborating the hypothesis of developmental delays coupled with accelerated aging. A significant correlation was noted between mutated protein length and communication, implying a high impact of ADNP on communicative skills. Additionally, correlations were discovered between the two previously described epi-genetic signatures in ADNP emphasizing aberrant acquisition of motor behaviors, with truncating mutations around the nuclear localization signal being mostly affected. Finally, all individuals seem to acquire an age equivalent of 1-6 years, requiring disease modification treatment, such as the ADNP-derived drug candidate, NAP (davunetide), which has recently shown efficacy in women suffering from the neurodegenerative disorder, progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP), a late-onset tauopathy.

Abstract
This study delves into the polarization properties of various hair colors using several techniques, including polarization ray tracing, full Stokes, and Mueller matrix imaging. Our analysis involved studying hair in both indoor and outdoor settings under varying lighting conditions. Our results demonstrate a strong correlation between hair color and the degree of linear polarization. Specifically, light-colored hair, such as white and blond, exhibits high albedo and low DoLP. In contrast, dark hair, like black and brown hair, has low albedo and high DoLP. Our research also revealed that a single hair strand displays high diattenuation near specular reflections but high depolarization in areas with diffuse reflections. Additionally, we investigated the wavelength dependency of the polarization properties by comparing the Mueller matrix under illumination at 450 nm and 589 nm. Our investigation demonstrates the impact of hair shade and color on polarization properties and the Umov effect.
