Nanodiamonds: A Cutting-Edge Approach to Enhancing Biomedical Therapies and Diagnostics in Biosensing

Nanodiamonds (NDs) have garnered attention in the field of nanomedicine due to their unique properties. This review offers a comprehensive overview of NDs synthesis methods, properties, and their uses in biomedical applications. Various synthesis techniques, such as detonation, high-pressure, high-temperature, and chemical vapor deposition, offer distinct advantages in tailoring NDs' size, shape, and surface properties. Surface modification methods further enhance NDs' biocompatibility and enable the attachment of bioactive molecules, expanding their applicability in biological systems. NDs serve as promising nanocarriers for drug delivery, showcasing biocompatibility and the ability to encapsulate therapeutic agents for targeted delivery. Additionally, NDs demonstrate potential in cancer treatment through hyperthermic therapy and vaccine enhancement for improved immune responses. Functionalization of NDs facilitates their utilization in biosensors for sensitive biomolecule detection, aiding in precise diagnostics and rapid detection of infectious diseases. This review underscores the multifaceted role of NDs in advancing biomedical applications. By synthesizing NDs through various methods and modifying their surfaces, researchers can tailor their properties for specific biomedical needs. The ability of NDs to serve as efficient drug delivery vehicles holds promise for targeted therapy, while their applications in hyperthermic therapy and vaccine enhancement offer innovative approaches to cancer treatment and immunization. Furthermore, the integration of NDs into biosensors enhances diagnostic capabilities, enabling rapid and sensitive detection of biomolecules and infectious diseases. Overall, the diverse functionalities of NDs underscore their potential as valuable tools in nanomedicine, paving the way for advancements in healthcare and biotechnology.

Building Stable Anodes for High-Rate Na-Metal Batteries

Due to low cost and high energy density, sodium metal batteries (SMBs) have attracted growing interest, with great potential to power future electric vehicles (EVs) and mobile electronics, which require rapid charge/discharge capability. However, the development of high-rate SMBs has been impeded by the sluggish Na+ ion kinetics, particularly at the sodium metal anode (SMA). The high-rate operation severely threatens the SMA stability, due to the unstable solid-electrolyte interface (SEI), the Na dendrite growth, and large volume changes during Na plating-stripping cycles, leading to rapid electrochemical performance degradations. This review surveys key challenges faced by high-rate SMAs, and highlights representative stabilization strategies, including the general modification of SMB components (including the host, Na metal surface, electrolyte, separator, and cathode), and emerging solutions with the development of solid-state SMBs and liquid metal anodes; the working principle, performance, and application of these strategies are elaborated, to reduce the Na nucleation energy barriers and promote Na+ ion transfer kinetics for stable high-rate Na metal anodes. This review will inspire further efforts to stabilize SMAs and other metal (e.g., Li, K, Mg, Zn) anodes, promoting high-rate applications of high-energy metal batteries towards a more sustainable society.

Where are the Excess Electrons in Subvalent Compounds? The Case of Ag7Pt2O7

Subvalent compounds raise the question of where those valence electrons not belonging to chemical bonds are. In the limiting case of Ag7Pt2O7, there is just one-electron excess in the chemical formula requiring the presence of Ag atoms with oxidation states below +1, assuming conventional Pt4+ and O2- ions. Such a situation challenges the understanding of the semiconducting and diamagnetic behavior observed in this oxide. Previous explanations that localize pairwise the electron excess in tetrahedral Ag4 interstices do not suffice in this case, since there are six silver tetrahedral voids and only an excess of nine electrons in the unit cell. Here, we provide an alternative explanation for the subvalent nature of this compound by combining interatomic distances, electron density-based descriptors, and orbital energetic analysis criteria. As a result, Ag atoms that do not participate in their valence electron are revealed. We identify excess electrons located in isolated subvalent silver clusters with electron-deficient multicenter bonds resembling pieces of metallic bonding in fcc-Ag and Ag7Pt2 alloy. Our analysis of the electronic band structure also supports the multicenter bonding picture. This combined approach from the real and reciprocal spaces reconciles existing discrepancies and is key to understanding the new chemistry of silver subvalent compounds.

MXene as Promising Anode Material for High-Performance Lithium-Ion Batteries: A Comprehensive Review

Broad adoption has already been started of MXene materials in various energy storage technologies, such as super-capacitors and batteries, due to the increasing versatility of the preparation methods, as well as the ongoing discovery of new members. The essential requirements for an excellent anode material for lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) are high safety, minimal volume expansion during the lithiation/de-lithiation process, high cyclic stability, and high Li+ storage capability. However, most of the anode materials for LIBs, such as graphite, SnO2, Si, Al, and Li4Ti5O12, have at least one issue. Hence, creating novel anode materials continues to be difficult. To date, a few MXenes have been investigated experimentally as anodes of LIBs due to their distinct active voltage windows, large power capabilities, and longer cyclic life. The objective of this review paper is to provide an overview of the synthesis and characterization characteristics of the MXenes as anode materials of LIBs, including their discharge/charge capacity, rate performance, and cycle ability. In addition, a summary of the potential outlook for developments of these materials as anodes is provided.

Theoretical Prediction and Experimental Synthesis of Zr3AC2 (A = Cd, Sb) Phases

MAX phases have great research value and application prospects, but it is challenging to synthesize the MAX phases containing Cd and Sb for the time being. In this paper, we confirmed the existence of the 312 MAX phases of Zr3CdC2 and Zr3SbC2, both from theoretical calculations and experimental synthesis. The Zr3AC2 (A = Cd, Sb) phase was predicted by the first-principles calculations, and the two MAX phases were confirmed to meet the requests of thermal, thermodynamic, and mechanical stabilities using formation energy, phonon dispersion, and the Born-Huang criteria. Their theoretical mechanical properties were also systematically investigated. It was found that the elastic moduli of Zr3CdC2 and Zr3SbC2 were 162.8 GPa and 164.3 GPa, respectively. Then, differences in the mechanical properties of Zr3AC2 (A = Cd, In, Sn, and Sb) were explained using bond layouts and charge transfers. The low theoretical Vickers hardness of the Zr3CdC2 (5.4 GPa) and Zr3SbC2 (4.3 GPa) phases exhibited excellent machinability. Subsequently, through spark plasma sintering, composites containing Zr3CdC2 and Zr3SbC2 phases were successfully synthesized at the temperatures of 850 °C and 1300 °C, respectively. The optimal molar ratio of Zr:Cd/Sb:C was determined as 3:1.5:1.5. SEM and the EDS results analysis confirmed the typical layered microstructure of Zr3CdC2 and Zr3SbC2 grains.

Refined structural studies on the fluorite-related polymorphs of sol-gel undoped and Eu3+-doped yttrium tantalates

Compounds with the general formula RE3MO7 (RE = rare earth ions; M = Ta, Nb, Sb, Ru, Ir, Os, Re, etc.), crystallize as a fluorite-related structure, forming polymorphs with different space groups. The space group strongly depends on the RE3+ and M5+ ionic radii and processing conditions. Structural characterization is well-established for the lanthanide series, but literature studies have divergent views about how to attribute yttrium tantalate (Y3TaO7) space groups-some authors have described the Y3TaO7 structure as orthorhombic and belonging to space group C2221 or Ccmm, whereas others have assigned a cubic Fm3̄m structure to it. Here, we have characterized the structure of undoped and Eu3+-doped Y3TaO7 (0.1 to 50 mol% of Eu3+) samples synthesized by the sol-gel method that crystallized as a cubic disordered fluorite-type structure, space group Fm3̄m. Their powder X-ray diffraction measurements, Rietveld analyzes and Raman spectra were used as a conclusive technique of the structural properties. We have also investigated whether a secondary phase (M'-YTaO4) emerged in the samples and compared the phase composition of each sample to their Raman spectra. Low-temperature photoluminescence measurements (∼15 K) using Eu3+ as a structural probe helped us analyze the inhomogeneous broadening observed in the emission spectra. These measurements can be used as an important tool to attribute the crystalline phases of rare earth tantalates and niobates.

Carbon dots on LAPONITE® hybrid nanocomposites: solid-state emission and inter-aggregate energy transfer

This study delves into the photoluminescent characteristics of solid-state hybrid carbon dots/LAPONITE® (CDLP). These hybrid materials were synthesized using the hydrothermal method with a precise pH control set at 8.5. The LAPONITE® structure remains intact without structural collapse, and we detected the possible deposition of carbon dots (CDs) aggregates on the clay mineral's edges. The use of different concentrations of citric acid (10-, 6-, 2- and 1-times weight/weight of LAPONITE® mass, maintaining the 1 : 1 molar ratio with ethylenediamine) during synthesis results in different CDs concentrations in CDLP-A (low precursors concentration) and CDLP-D (high concentration) with an amorphous structure and average size around 2.8-3.0 nm. The CDLP displayed visible photoluminescence emission in aqueous and powder, which the last underwent quenching according to lifetimes and quantum yield measurements. Low-temperature measurements revealed an enhancement of the non-radiative pathways induced by aggregation. Energy transfer modelling based on Förster-Dexter suggests an approximate mean distance of 9.5 nm between clusters of CDs.

Signatures of nearly compensated magnetism and spin glass behavior in highly frustrated β-Mn-type Mn50Fe25+xAl25-x Heusler alloys

The present study examines the effect of Fe/Al concentration on the structural and magnetic properties of Mn-rich Mn50Fe25+xAl25-x (x = 5, 10, 15) Heusler alloys through x-ray diffraction, temperature- and field-dependent DC magnetization, thermoremanent magnetization, magnetic memory effect, AC susceptibility measurements, and DFT calculations. The samples crystallize in a cubic β-Mn structure. The trend shows a reduction in lattice parameters (unit cell volume) with the increasing Fe proportion. These alloys exhibit strong antiferromagnetic interactions with large frustration parameters, indicating the presence of competing magnetic interactions. The DC magnetization data reveal spin glass-like features with a peak at spin glass freezing temperature (Tf). The observation of bifurcation in temperature-dependent zero-field-cooled and field-cooled magnetization curves, exponential dependence of the temperature variation of remanence and coercivity, magnetic relaxation, and magnetic memory effect below Tf support the spin-glass character of these alloys. The frequency dependence of Tf is also examined in the context of dynamic scaling laws, such as the Vogel-Fulcher law and critical slowing down model, which further supports the presence of spin glass behavior. In the theoretical DFT calculations, the electronic structure is found to be metallic and similar for both spin projections. Moreover, the antiferromagnetic arrangement of the magnetic moments, in line with the experimental observations, is stabilized by exchange interactions, resulting in an almost compensated total magnetic moment of 0.02-0.38 µB/f.u. This is probably caused by the frustrated structure and non-stoichiometric compositions of Mn50Fe25+xAl25-x.

Anti-Proliferative Activity of Poloxamer Cobalt Ferrite Nanoparticles against Human Prostate Cancer (DU-145) Cells: In-Vitro Study

Prostate cancer is the second most frequent type of cancer death in men. This study refers to the novel hyperthermia application of poloxamer-coated cobalt ferrite as a new approach for thermal eradication of DU-145 human prostate cancerous cells under a radio frequency magnetic field (RF-MF). The hydrothermal method was applied for the synthesis of cobalt ferrite nanoparticles. Then, the structure, size, and morphology of nanoparticle were characterized. The cytotoxicity of the synthesized nanoparticles and RF-MF exposure on DU-145 prostate cancer cells was investigated separately or in combination with colony formation methods and MTT [3-(4,5-Dimethylthiazol-2-yl)-2,5-Diphenyltetrazolium Bromide] assay. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the spherical morphology of nanoparticles with a size of 5.5 ± 2.6 nm. The temperature of cells treated with nanoparticles under RF-MF reached 42.73 ± 0.2°C after 15 min. RF-MF treatment or nanoparticles have not affected cell viability significantly. However, the combination of them eradicated 53% ± 4% of cancerous cells. In-vitro hyperthermia was performed on human prostate cancer cells (DU-145) with cobalt ferrite nanoparticles at specific concentrations that demonstrated a decrease in survival fraction based on colony formation assay compared to cells that were treated alone with nanoparticles or with RF-MF.

Ultralow Thermal Conductivity of a Chalcogenide System Pt3Bi4Q9 (Q = S, Se) Driven by the Hierarchy of Rigid [Pt6Q12]12- Clusters Embedded in Soft Bi-Q Sublattice

Knowledge of structure-property relationships in solids with intrinsic low thermal conductivity is crucial for fields such as thermoelectrics, thermal barrier coatings, and refractories. Herein, we propose a new "rigidness in softness" structural scheme for intrinsic low lattice thermal conductivity (κL), which embeds rigid clusters into the soft matrix to induce large lattice anharmonicity, and accordingly discover a new series of chalcogenides Pt3Bi4Q9 (Q = S, Se). Pt3Bi4S9-xSex (x = 3, 6) achieved an intrinsic ultralow κL down to 0.39 W/(m K) at 773 K, which is considerably low among the Bi chalcogenide thermoelectric materials. Pt3Bi4Q9 contains the rigid cubic [Pt6Q12]12- clusters embedded in the soft Bi-Q sublattice, involving multiple bonding interactions and vibration hierarchy. The hierarchical structure yields a large lattice anharmonicity with high Grüneisen parameters (γ) 1.97 of Pt3Bi4Q9, as verified by the effective scatter of low-lying optical phonons toward heat-carrying acoustic phonons. Consequently, the rigid-soft coupling significantly inhibits heat propagation, exhibiting low acoustic phonon frequencies (∼25 cm-1) and Debye temperatures (ΘD = 170.4 K) in Pt3Bi4Se9. Owing to the suppressed κL and considerable power factor (PF), the ZT value of Pt3Bi4S6Se3 can reach 0.56 at 773 K without heavy carrier doping, which is competitive among the pristine Bi chalcogenides. Theoretical calculations predicted a large potential for performance improvement via proper doping, indicating the great potential of this structure type for promising thermoelectric materials.

Multifield-Modulated Spintronic Terahertz Emitter Based on a Vanadium Dioxide Phase Transition

The efficient generation and active modulation of terahertz (THz) waves are strongly required for the development of various THz applications such as THz imaging/spectroscopy and THz communication. In addition, due to the increasing degree of integration for the THz optoelectronic devices, miniaturizing the complex THz system into a compact unit is also important and necessary. Today, integrating the THz source with the modulator to develop a powerful, easy-to-adjust, and scalable or on-chip THz emitter is still a challenge. As a new type of THz emitter, a spintronic THz emitter has attracted a great deal of attention due to its advantages of high efficiency, ultrawide band, low cost, and easy integration. In this study, we have proposed a multifield-modulated spintronic THz emitter based on the VO2/Ni/Pt multilayer film structure with a wide band region of 0-3 THz. Because of the pronounced phase transition of the integrated VO2 layer, the fabricated THz emitter can be efficiently modulated via thermal or electric stimuli with a modulation depth of about one order of magnitude; the modulation depths under thermal stimulation and electrical stimulation were 91.8% and 97.3%, respectively. It is believed that this multifield modulated spintronic THz emitter will provide various possibilities for the integration of next-generation on-chip THz sources and THz modulators.

The impact of A-site cations on the crystal structure and magnetism of the new double perovskites ALaCoTeO6 (A = Na and K)

In this work, we report the structural and magnetic characterization of two new B-site rock-salt ordered double perovskites ALaCoTeO6 (A = K+ and Na+) with mixed A-site cations. KLaCoTeO6 crystallizes in the space group P4/nmm with a long-range ordering degree of 84.8% for the A-site K+/La3+ cations, whereas NaLaCoTeO6 adopts an unexpected triclinically distorted I1̄-structure with Na/La3+ disordering, validated by combined Rietveld refinements against high-resolution neutron diffraction data and Cu Kα1 X-ray powder diffraction data. Magnetic susceptibility at low temperatures shows clear antiferromagnetic (AFM) transitions for both compounds. KLaCoTeO6 exhibits the highest AFM transition temperature of 20 K amongst all the Co/Te-ordered 3C-type A2CoTeO6 (A = Pb2+, Sr2+, and Ca2+) and ALaCoTeO6 double perovskites due to its larger Co2+-O-Te6+ bond angle and A-site cationic ordering-induced larger distortion of the Co2+-based face-centered cubic sublattice. Moreover, we found that the average radius of the A-site cations plays a decisive role in the AFM transition temperatures of all these ordered double perovskites, that is, a larger A-site cation always results in a higher AFM transition temperature. This provides a strategy to subtly manipulate the magnetic properties of ordered double perovskites.

Absorption peak decomposition of an inhomogeneous nanoparticle ensemble of hexagonal tungsten bronzes using the reduced Mie scattering integration method

Recent optical analyses of cesium-doped hexagonal tungsten bronze have accurately replicated the absorption peak and identified both plasmonic and polaronic absorptions in the near-infrared region, which have been exploited in various technological applications. However, the absorption peaks of tungsten oxides and bronzes have not generally been reproduced well, including those of the homologous potassium- and rubidium-doped hexagonal tungsten bronzes that lacked evidence of polaronic subpeaks. The present study reports a modified and simplified Mie scattering integration method which incorporates the ensemble inhomogeneity effect and allows precise peak decomposition and determination of the physical parameters of nanoparticles. The decomposed peaks were interpreted in terms of electronic structures, screening effect, and modified dielectric functions. The analysis revealed that the plasma frequencies, polaron energies, and the number of oxygen vacancies decrease in the dopant order Cs → Rb → K. The coexistence of plasmonic and polaronic excitations was confirmed for all the alkali-doped hexagonal tungsten bronzes.

Optically Transparent Lead Halide Perovskite Polycrystalline Ceramics

We utilize room-temperature uniaxial pressing at applied loads achievable with low-cost, laboratory-scale presses to fabricate freestanding CH3NH3PbX3 (X- = Br-, Cl-) polycrystalline ceramics with millimeter thicknesses and optical transparency up to ∼70% in the infrared. As-fabricated perovskite ceramics can be produced with desirable form factors (i.e., size, shape, and thickness) and high-quality surfaces without any postprocessing (e.g., cutting or polishing). This method should be broadly applicable to a large swath of metal halide perovskites, not just the compositions shown here. In addition to fabrication, we analyze microstructure-optical property relationships through detailed experiments (e.g., transmission measurements, electron microscopy, X-ray tomography, optical profilometry, etc.) as well as modeling based on Mie theory. The optical, electrical, and mechanical properties of perovskite polycrystalline ceramics are benchmarked against those of single-crystalline analogues through spectroscopic ellipsometry, Hall measurements, and nanoindentation. Finally, γ-ray scintillation from a transparent MAPbBr3 ceramic is demonstrated under irradiation from a 137Cs source. From a broader perspective, scalable methods to produce freestanding polycrystalline lead halide perovskites with comparable properties to their single-crystal counterparts could enable key advancements in the commercial production of perovskite-based technologies (e.g., direct X-ray/γ-ray detectors, scintillators, and nonlinear optics).

Review and perspectives on TS-1 catalyzed propylene epoxidation

Titanium silicate zeolite (TS-1) is widely used in the research on selective oxidations of organic substrates by H2O2. Compared with the chlorohydrin process and the hydroperoxidation process, the TS-1 catalyzed hydroperoxide epoxidation of propylene oxide (HPPO) has advantages in terms of by-products and environmental friendliness. This article reviews the latest progress in propylene epoxidation catalyzed by TS-1, including the HPPO process and gas phase epoxidation. The preparation and modification of TS-1 for green and sustainable production are summarized, including the use of low-cost feedstocks, the development of synthetic routes, strategies to enhance mass transfer in TS-1 crystal and the enhancement of catalytic performance after modification. In particular, this article summarizes the catalytic mechanisms and advanced characterization techniques for propylene epoxidation in recent years. Finally, the present situation, development prospect and challenge of propylene epoxidation catalyzed by TS-1 were prospected.

Toughening 3D printed biomimetic hydroxyapatite scaffolds: Polycaprolactone-based self-hardening inks

The application of 3D printing to calcium phosphates has opened unprecedented possibilities for the fabrication of personalized bone grafts. However, their biocompatibility and bioactivity are counterbalanced by their high brittleness. In this work we aim at overcoming this problem by developing a self-hardening ink containing reactive ceramic particles in a polycaprolactone solution instead of the traditional approach that use hydrogels as binders. The presence of polycaprolactone preserved the printability of the ink and was compatible with the hydrolysis-based hardening process, despite the absence of water in the ink and its hydrophobicity. The microstructure evolved from a continuous polymeric phase with loose ceramic particles to a continuous network of hydroxyapatite nanocrystals intertwined with the polymer, in a configuration radically different from the polymer/ceramic composites obtained by fused deposition modelling. This resulted in the evolution from a ductile behavior, dominated by the polymer, to a stiffer behavior as the ceramic phase reacted. The polycaprolactone binder provides two highly relevant benefits compared to hydrogel-based inks. First, the handleability and elasticity of the as-printed scaffolds, together with the proven possibility of eliminating the solvent, opens the door to implanting the scaffolds freshly printed once lyophilized, while in a ductile state, and the hardening process to take place inside the body, as in the case of calcium phosphate cements. Second, even with a hydroxyapatite content of more than 92 wt.%, the flexural strength and toughness of the scaffolds after hardening are twice and five times those of the all-ceramic scaffolds obtained with the hydrogel-based inks, respectively. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: Overcoming the brittleness of ceramic scaffolds would extend the applicability of synthetic bone grafts to high load-bearing situations. In this work we developed a 3D printing ink by replacing the conventional hydrogel binder with a water-free polycaprolactone solution. The presence of polycaprolactone not only enhanced significantly the strength and toughness of the scaffolds while keeping the proportion of bioactive ceramic phase larger than 90 wt.%, but it also conferred flexibility and manipulability to the as-printed scaffolds. Since they are able to harden upon contact with water under physiological conditions, this opens up the possibility of implanting them immediately after printing, while they are still in a ductile state, with clear advantages for fixation and press-fit in the bone defect.

Structural, morphological, electrical, and dielectric properties of Na2Cu5(Si2O7)2 for ASSIBs

Solid inorganic electrolyte materials are fundamental components for constructing all-solid-state sodium-ion batteries. These solid electrolytes offer considerable benefits related to safety, electrochemical performance, and mechanical stability in comparison to liquid organic electrolyte systems. This study investigates the sodium ion conduction mechanism and relaxation kinetics in the sorosilicate material Na2Cu5(Si2O7)2, a potential solid electrolyte, using impedance spectroscopy. Analysis of the DC conductivity data demonstrates that sodium ion mobility follows Arrhenius behavior with a thermal activation energy barrier of 1.21 eV. This work highlights the importance of carefully choosing an appropriate equivalent circuit model to extract DC conductivity parameters from impedance data, given the contributions from both grain and grain boundary effects. Analysis of the AC conductivity and dielectric constant as a function of frequency and temperature demonstrates that ionic conduction takes place in this material through a process in which charge carriers overcome correlated energy barriers, known as correlated barrier hopping. The neutron diffraction patterns were analyzed using soft bond valence sum (BVS) techniques to map the possible ionic conduction pathways within the unit cell. Examination of the data points to obstructions in the sodium ion diffusion routes along the a-axis and diagonal of the bc plane within the triclinic unit cell. These bottlenecks likely contribute to the high activation energy and correspondingly low ionic conductivity observed. Analysis of dielectric properties by modulus verified that the ionic conduction relaxation phenomena exhibit thermal activation and a distribution of relaxation times. In summary, this work elucidates the microscopic ionic conduction mechanism in Na2Cu5(Si2O7)2 through extensive analysis encompassing DC/AC conductivity, electric modulus, and dielectric constant measurements. The insights gained into the ionic conduction mechanism will aid in engineering optimized ionic conductor materials for battery technologies.

Use of Ball Drop Casting and Surface Modification for the Development of Amine-Functionalized Silica Aerogel Globules for Dynamic and Efficient Direct Air Capture

Amine-functionalized silica aerogel globules (AFSAGs) were first synthesized via a simple ball drop casting method followed by amine grafting. The effect of grafting time on the structure and CO2 adsorption performance of the AFSAGs was investigated. The CO2 adsorption performance was comprehensively studied by breakthrough curves, adsorption capacity and rates, surface amine loading and density, amine efficiency, adsorption halftime, and cyclic stability. The results demonstrate that prolonging the grafting time does not lead to a significant increase in surface amine content owing to pore space blockage by superabundant amine groups. The CO2 adsorption performance shows obvious dependence on surface amine density, determined by both the surface amine content and specific surface area, and working temperature. AFSAGs with a grafting time of 24 h (AFSAG24) with a moderate surface amine density have optimal CO2 adsorption capacities, which are 1.78 and 2.14 mmol/g at 25 °C with dry and humid 400 ppm CO2, respectively. The amine efficiency of AFSAG24 with low CO2 concentrations, 0.38-0.63 with dry 400 ppm-1% CO2, is the highest among the reported amine-functionalized adsorbents. After estimation with different diffusion models, the CO2 adsorption process of AFSAG24 is governed by film diffusion and intraparticle diffusion. In the range of 1-4 mm, the ball size does not affect the CO2 adsorption capacity of AFSAG24 obviously. AFSAG24 offers significant advantages for practical direct air capture compared with its state-of-the-art counterparts, such as high dynamic adsorption capacity and amine efficiency, excellent stability, and outstanding adaptation to the environment.

Strong electron-phonon coupling and high lattice thermal conductivity in half-Heusler thermoelectric materials

Traditional half-Heusler thermoelectric materials, identified as 18-electron compounds, are characterized by the high power factor and the high lattice thermal conductivity. Interestingly, the emerging 19-electron half-Heusler compounds were also found to be promising thermoelectric materials, but with a 5-10 times lower lattice thermal conductivity. Since the two kinds of compounds have similar chemical and physical structures, such as TiCoSb and VCoSb, the large difference in lattice thermal conductivity is a puzzling question. Here, we present a theoretical study to clarify the lattice thermal transport in half-Heusler thermoelectric materials. Based on electronic band structure analysis, we show that the two transition-metal elements in half-Heusler compounds form the strong and direct d-d interaction that is responsible for the high lattice thermal conductivity of 18-electron compounds. In 19-electron half-Heusler compounds, however, the extra valence electron enters the d-d antibonding states, which significantly weakens the atomic bond strength, leading to a large decrease in the cohesive energy. The resulting softened acoustic phonons enhance the phonon-phonon scattering, and thus reduce the lattice thermal conductivity significantly. By constructing an artificial 18-e compound V0.5Sc0.5CoSb, it is proved that the one less electron relative to VCoSb increases the lattice thermal conductivity significantly.

Structural Properties of Some Vacancy-Ordered Platinum Halide Perovskites

The structural changes that accompany the dehydration of Na2PtX6·6H2O (X = Cl, Br) were studied using in situ variable temperature synchrotron X-ray diffraction. The two hexahydrates are isostructural, containing isolated PtX6 octahedra separated by Na cations. Removal of the water results in the formation of the anhydrous vacancy ordered double perovskites Na2PtX6. The Na cation is too small for the cuboctahedron site of the parent cubic structure, resulting in cooperative tilting of the PtX6 octahedra and lowering of the symmetry. Replacing Na with a larger alkali metal (K, Rb, or Cs) invariably enabled the isolation of the anhydrous hexahalide, and we found no evidence that these readily hydrated. For all cations, other than Na, it was possible to observe the archetypical cubic structure, although for the two potassium salts K2PtBr6 and K2PtI6, this was only observed above a critical temperature of 175 and 460 K, respectively. As these two samples were cooled, symmetry lowering was observed, yielding a tetragonal structure initially and ultimately a monoclinic structure: Fm3̅m → P4/mnc → P21/n. These phase transitions are associated with the onset of long-range cooperative tilting of the PtX6 octahedra described using the Glazer tilt notation as a0a0a0 → a0a0c+ → a-a-c+.

Surface thermodynamics of yttrium titanate pyrochlore nanomaterials

Nanocrystalline pyrochlore materials have been investigated for their enhanced radiation tolerance as ceramic nuclear waste hosts. In this work, we study the thermodynamic driving force of nano-scale materials for radiation resistance. The size dependent thermodynamic properties of a series of Y2Ti2O7 nanoparticles were investigated. Samples were synthesized by a sol-gel method and characterized by synchrotron X-ray diffraction, BET analysis, and thermogravimetric analysis. The surface and interface enthalpies of Y2Ti2O7 were determined by high temperature oxide melt drop solution calorimetry to be 4.07 J m-2 and 3.04 J m-2, respectively. The experimentally obtained surface energy is in good agreement with computationally derived average surface energies for yttrium and other rare-earth titanate pyrochlores. Theoretical links between nanoparticle stability, surface energy, and radiation resistance of pyrochlore materials were then explored.

The dual-model up/down-conversion green luminescence of NaSrGd(MoO4)3: Er3+ and its application for temperature sensing

Er3+-doped phosphors are widely used as dual-functional optical thermometers due to their distinctive up/down-conversion luminescence and the thermally coupled energy states (2H11/2 and 4S3/2) of Er3+. The development of high-performance Er3+-activated optical thermometers is both an intriguing subject and a formidable challenge in the field. This article investigates the up/down-conversion (UC and DC) photoluminescence properties of NaSrGd(MoO4)3 (NSGM): Er3+. When excited at 375 and 975 nm, the phosphors emit peaks at 530, 550, and 657 nm, corresponding to the 2H11/2, 4S3/2, and 4F9/2 → 4I15/2 transitions of Er3+, with the 4S3/2 → 4I15/2 transition displaying the highest intensity. The optical properties are comprehensively studied through UV-visible absorption, PL spectroscopy, and PLE spectroscopy. Optimal luminescence intensity is achieved at an Er3+ concentration of 4% mol. The resulting chromatic coordinates (x, y) and high correlated color temperature (CCT) values of the doped phosphors yield thermally stable cold emissions in the green region, boasting color purities of approximately 98.76% and 80.74% for DC and UC conversion, respectively. The optical temperature sensing properties of thermally coupled energetic states are explored based on the fluorescence intensity ratio principle. NSGM: 0.04Er3+, under 375 nm light excitation, demonstrates the maximum relative sensitivity of 0.87%/K-1 at 298.15 K, spanning a wide temperature range from 298.15 to 488.15 K. Conversely, under 975 nm light excitation, NSGM: 0.04Er3+ exhibits the maximum relative sensitivity of 0.63%/K-1 over the same temperature range, with temperature uncertainty (δT) less than 0.50 K and repeatability (R) (more than 98%). These findings position this material as a promising candidate for optical thermometer applications. The optical heating capacity of the synthesised phosphor is also determined using optical thermometry results, and heat generation up to approximately 457 K is found, indicating that NSGM: 0.04Er3+ could be useful for photo-thermal therapy.

Comparative Studies of the Structural and Physicochemical Properties of the First Fullerene Derivative FD-C60 (Fullerenol) and Second Fullerene Derivate SD-C60 (3HFWC)

In order to maximally reduce the toxicity of fullerenol (the first derivative of C60, FD-C60), and increase its biomedical efficiency, the second derivative SD-C60 (3HFWC, Hyper-Harmonized Hydroxylated Fullerene Water Complex) was created. Several different methods were applied in the comparative characterization of FD-C60 and SD-C60 with the same OH groups in their core. FD-C60 as an individual structure was about 1.3 nm in size, while SD-C60 as an individual structure was 10-30 nm in size. Based on ten physicochemical methods and techniques, FD-C60 and SD-C60 were found to be two different substances in terms of size, structure, and physicochemical properties; FD-C60, at 100 °C, had endothermic characteristics, while SD-C60, at 133 °C, had exothermic characteristics; FD-C60 did not have water layers, while SD-C60 had water layers; the zeta potential of FD-C60 was -25.85 mV, while it was -43.29 mV for SD-C60. SD-C60 is a promising substance for use in cosmetics and pharmaceuticals.

Achieving Compatible p/n-Type Half-Heusler Compositions in Valence Balanced/Unbalanced Mg1-xVxNiSb

In thermoelectric and other inorganic materials research, the significance of half-Heusler (HH) compositions following the 18-electron rule has drawn interest in developing and exploiting the potential of intermetallic compounds. For the fabrication of thermoelectric modules, in addition to high-performance materials, having both p- and n-type materials with compatible thermal expansion coefficients is a prerequisite for module development. In this work, the p-type to n-type transition of valence balanced/unbalanced HH composition of Mg1-xVxNiSb was demonstrated by changing the Mg:V chemical ratio. The Seebeck coefficient and power factor of Ti-doped Mg0.57V0.33Ti0.1NiSb are -130 μV K-1 and 0.4 mW m-1 K-2 at 400 K, respectively. In addition, the reduced lattice thermal conductivity (κL < 2.5 W m-1 K-1 at 300 K) of n-type compositions was reported to be much smaller than κL of conventional HH materials. As high thermal conductivity has long been an issue for HH materials, the synthesis of p- and n-type Mg1-xVxNiSb compositions with low lattice thermal conductivity is a promising strategy for producing high-performance HH compounds. Achieving both p- and n-type materials from similar parent composition enabled us to fabricate a thermoelectric module with maximum output power Pmax ∼ 63 mW with a temperature difference of 390 K. This finding supports the benefit of exploring the huge compositional space of valence balanced/unbalanced quaternary HH compositions for further development of thermoelectric devices.

Crystal structure and luminescence properties of a novel near-infrared phosphor LiAlO2:Fe3

Cr3+-free near-infrared (NIR) phosphors are currently gaining significant attention in various application fields. A novel Fe3+-activated LiAlO2 NIR phosphor was successfully synthesized by high-temperature solid-state method. Under excitation of 391 nm and 467 nm, the phosphor emits near-infrared light with wavelengths ranging from 600 to 850 nm. The emission bands with peaks at 725 nm correspond to the transition from 4T1(4G) to the ground state energy level 6A1(6S). The optical band gap of LiAlO2 was calculated using Density Function Theory (DFT) and diffuse reflectance spectrum, respectively. The thermal stability of the sample was measured under 391 nm and 467 nm excitation, showing that the emission intensity at 413 K is 55.3 % and 52.4 % of the emission intensity at room temperature.

CoNiO2/Co3O4 Nanosheets on Boron Doped Diamond for Supercapacitor Electrodes

Developing novel supercapacitor electrodes with high energy density and good cycle stability has aroused great interest. Herein, the vertically aligned CoNiO2/Co3O4 nanosheet arrays anchored on boron doped diamond (BDD) films are designed and fabricated by a simple one-step electrodeposition method. The CoNiO2/Co3O4/BDD electrode possesses a large specific capacitance (214 mF cm-2) and a long-term capacitance retention (85.9% after 10,000 cycles), which is attributed to the unique two-dimensional nanosheet architecture, high conductivity of CoNiO2/Co3O4 and the wide potential window of diamond. Nanosheet materials with an ultrathin thickness can decrease the diffusion length of ions, increase the contact area with electrolyte, as well as improve active material utilization, which leads to an enhanced electrochemical performance. Additionally, CoNiO2/Co3O4/BDD is fabricated as the positive electrode with activated carbon as the negative electrode, this assembled asymmetric supercapacitor exhibits an energy density of 7.5 W h kg-1 at a power density of 330.5 W kg-1 and capacity retention rate of 97.4% after 10,000 cycles in 6 M KOH. This work would provide insights into the design of advanced electrode materials for high-performance supercapacitors.

Electronic structure and optical properties of In- and Vacancy-doped 6H-SiC: a first-principles study

PURPOSES

The paper aims to investigative the cacuses and impacts of In- and Vacancy-doped to 6H-SiC, expecting that improving optical properties of materials. Design-Using the first-principles calculations, we discuss the electronic structure and optical properties of different doped 6H-SiC systems.

FINDINGS

The results show that In-doped 6H-SiC becomes a direct bandgap p-type semiconductor and the energy bandgap is reduced from the intrinsic 2.059 to 1.515 eV. We demonstrate the stability of the systems through the formation energy analysis, meanwhile identify their physical origins and discuss applications of all structures in electronic devices within optical analysis. Find the energy beginning values of the VSi-doped and VC-doped systems' optical absorption spectrums and extend to 0.4 2 eV and 0.11 eV respectively compared with the original 3.23 eV. In the visible light region, the reflectivity images of the VC/VSi and (In, VSi)-codoped systems rise obviously.

CONCLUSIONS

The optical properties of all doping systems were analyzed to be improved compared with the intrinsic, all above mentioned provide a theoretical basis for the fabrication of spintronic and optical devices.

Biomimetic Exogenous "Tissue Batteries" as Artificial Power Sources for Implantable Bioelectronic Devices Manufacturing

Implantable bioelectronic devices (IBDs) have gained attention for their capacity to conformably detect physiological and pathological signals and further provide internal therapy. However, traditional power sources integrated into these IBDs possess intricate limitations such as bulkiness, rigidity, and biotoxicity. Recently, artificial "tissue batteries" (ATBs) have diffusely developed as artificial power sources for IBDs manufacturing, enabling comprehensive biological-activity monitoring, diagnosis, and therapy. ATBs are on-demand and designed to accommodate the soft and confining curved placement space of organisms, minimizing interface discrepancies, and providing ample power for clinical applications. This review presents the near-term advancements in ATBs, with a focus on their miniaturization, flexibility, biodegradability, and power density. Furthermore, it delves into material-screening, structural-design, and energy density across three distinct categories of TBs, distinguished by power supply strategies. These types encompass innovative energy storage devices (chemical batteries and supercapacitors), power conversion devices that harness power from human-body (biofuel cells, thermoelectric nanogenerators, bio-potential devices, piezoelectric harvesters, and triboelectric devices), and energy transfer devices that receive and utilize external energy (radiofrequency-ultrasound energy harvesters, ultrasound-induced energy harvesters, and photovoltaic devices). Ultimately, future challenges and prospects emphasize ATBs with the indispensability of bio-safety, flexibility, and high-volume energy density as crucial components in long-term implantable bioelectronic devices.

Remineralization potential of varying concentrations of two plant-based extracts of Cocos nucifera on white spot lesions using SEM and EDAX analysis: An in vitro study

Aim

To evaluate the remineralization potential of varying concentrations of two plant-based extracts of Cocos nucifera on white spot lesions using SEM and EDAX in vitro testing methods.

Materials and Methods

The pulp was freshly obtained from coconut and divided into two. Then, coconut milk was obtained by blending, while the next portion was freeze-dried and lyophilized. Third molar teeth were processed into tooth slabs (N = 40) and split equally into five groups by block randomization. After demineralization, one tooth slab was taken from each, and SEM analysis was done. Remineralization was then performed among the various groups that included Group 1, which acted as a control and consisted of the remineralization solution. Groups 2 and 3 comprised 1:1 and 2:1 concentrations of the coconut milk, whereas Groups 4 and 5 consisted of 1:1 and 2:1 concentrations of the lyophilized extract. SEM and EDAX testing were done post-remineralization. Ca and phosphate values were tabulated, and statistical significance was determined for the obtained values using ANOVA.

Results

Among the control and treatment groups, surface remineralization was better observed in 1:1 coconut milk and 2:1 coconut milk than in the 2:1 lyophilized coconut, control, and 1:1 lyophilized coconut. Between the control and treatment groups, Ca and phosphate percentages (P < 0.001) showed statistical differences. The lowest value of 2.3% was noted in the 2:1 lyophilized coconut group.

Conclusion

Coconut extracts exhibit remineralization potential on the artificial carious lesion. Coconut milk exhibited significant improvement in the surface properties than lyophilized coconut.

Progress and perspectives on carbon-based materials for adsorptive removal and photocatalytic degradation of perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS)

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) (also known as 'forever chemicals') have emerged as trace pollutants of global concern, attributing to their persistent and bio-accumulative nature, pervasive distribution, and adverse public health and environmental impacts. The unregulated discharge of PFAS into aquatic environments represents a prominent threat to the wellbeing of humans and marine biota, thereby exhorting unprecedented action to tackle PFAS contamination. Indeed, several noteworthy technologies intending to remove PFAS from environmental compartments have been intensively evaluated in recent years. Amongst them, adsorption and photocatalysis demonstrate remarkable ability to eliminate PFAS from different water matrices. In particular, carbon-based materials, because of their diverse structures and many exciting properties, offer bountiful opportunities as both adsorbent and photocatalyst, for the efficient abatement of PFAS. This review, therefore, presents a comprehensive summary of the diverse array of carbonaceous materials, including biochar, activated carbon, carbon nanotubes, and graphene, that can serve as ideal candidates in adsorptive and photocatalytic treatment of PFAS contaminated water. Specifically, the efficacy of carbon-mediated PFAS removal via adsorption and photocatalysis is summarised, together with a cognizance of the factors influencing the treatment efficiency. The review further highlights the neoteric development on the novel innovative approach 'concentrate and degrade' that integrates selective adsorption of trace concentrations of PFAS onto photoactive surface sites, with enhanced catalytic activity. This technique is way more energy efficient than conventional energy-intensive photocatalysis. Finally, the review speculates the cardinal challenges associated with the practical utility of carbon-based materials, including their scalability and economic feasibility, for eliminating exceptionally stable PFAS from water matrices.

Photocatalytic Enhancement Strategy with the Introduction of Metallic Bi: A Review on Bi/Semiconductor Photocatalysts

Semiconductor photocatalysis has great potential in the fields of solar fuel production and environmental remediation. Nevertheless, the photocatalytic efficiency still constrains its practical production applications. The development of new semiconductor materials is essential to enhance the solar energy conversion efficiency of photocatalytic systems. Recently, the research on enhancing the photocatalytic performance of semiconductors by introducing bismuth (Bi) has attracted widespread attention. In this review, we briefly overview the main synthesis methods of Bi/semiconductor photocatalysts and summarize the control of the micromorphology of Bi in Bi/semiconductors and the key role of Bi in the catalytic system. In addition, the promising applications of Bi/semiconductors in photocatalysis, such as pollutant degradation, sterilization, water separation, CO2 reduction, and N2 fixation, are outlined. Finally, an outlook on the challenges and future research directions of Bi/semiconductor photocatalysts is given. We aim to offer guidance for the rational design and synthesis of high-efficiency Bi/semiconductor photocatalysts for energy and environmental applications.

Application of carbon nanostructures in biomedicine: realities, difficulties, prospects

The review systematizes data on the wide possibilities of practical application of carbon nanostructures. Much attention is paid to the use of carbon nanomaterials in medicine for the visualization of tumors during surgical interventions, in the creation of cosmetics, as well as in agriculture in the creation of fertilizers. Additionally, we demonstrate trends in research in the field of carbon nanomaterials with a view to elaborating targeted drug delivery systems. We also show the creation of nanosized medicinal substances and diagnostic systems, and the production of new biomaterials. A separate section is devoted to the difficulties in studying carbon nanomaterials. The review is intended for a wide range of readers, as well as for experts in the field of nanotechnology and nanomedicine.

Early rise of glutamate-glutamine levels in mild cognitive impairment: Evidence for emerging excitotoxicity

BACKGROUND

Use proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) non invasive technique to assess the modifications of glutamate-glutamine (Glx) and gammaaminobutyric acid (GABA) brain levels in patients reporting a cognitive complain METHODS: Posterior cingular cortex 1H-MRS spectra of 46 patients (19 male, 27 female) aged 57 to 87 years (mean : 73.32 ± 7.33 years) with a cognitive complaint were examined with a MEGA PRESS sequence at 3T, and compounds Glutamateglutamine (Glx), GABA, Creatine (Cr) and NAA were measured. From this data the metabolite ratios Glx/Cr, GABA/Cr and NAA/Cr were calculated. In addition, all patient performed the Mini Mental State Evaluation (MMSE) and 2 groups were realized with the clinical threshold of 24.

RESULTS

16 patients with MMSE 〈 24 and 30 patients with MMSE 〉 24. Significant increase of Glx/Cr in PCC of patients with MMSE 〈 24 compared to patients with MMSE 〉 24. Moreover, GABA/Cr ratio exhibited a trend for a decrease in PCC between the two groups, while they showed a significant decrease NAA/Cr ratio.

CONCLUSION

Our results concerning Glx are in agreement with a physiopathological hypothesis involving a biphasic variation of glutamate levels associated with excitotoxicity, correlated with the clinical evolution of the disease. These observations suggest that MRS assessment of glutamate levels could be helpful for both diagnosis and classification of cognitive impairment in stage.

Highly efficient recovery of Zn2+/Cu2+ from water by using hydrotalcite as crystal seeds

The efficient and waste-free recovery of heavy metals is critical for heavy metal wastewater treatment. In this work, we explored how heavy metals can be recovered as valuable chemicals in the presence of crystal seeds. Hydrotalcite (one kind of layered double hydroxides (LDHs)) was used as crystal seeds to recover Zn2+ in the presence of Al3+ from water (i.e., seed-Zn2+-Al3+ system), which was compared with the monometallic heterogeneous system (seed-Zn2+) and direct coprecipitation (Zn2+-Al3+) system. Our results demonstrated that the seed-Zn2+-Al3+ system possessed a recovery rate of 2.6-2.8 times and a recovery kinetic rate of 2.7-5.9 times higher than those of the other two systems. Differing from the latter two systems, hydrotalcite seeds could induce Zn2+ and Al3+ to form ZnAl-LDH in seed-Zn2+-Al3+. Interestingly, the ZnAl-LDH presents a compositional divalent/trivalent cation molar ratio of ca. 3, which is comparable with the value in the hydrotalcite. It was demonstrated that the hydrotalcite seeds could act as a template to significantly induce the formation of ZnAl-LDH complying with the seed's structure and compositional ratio. Similar induction effect of seeds as the Zn2+ system was further verified in Cu2+ systems. This work provides a novel strategy for efficient recovery of heavy metals with product selectivity.

Surface Chemistry of Biologically Active Reducible Oxide Nanozymes

Reducible metal oxide nanozymes (rNZs) are a subject of intense recent interest due to their catalytic nature, ease of synthesis, and complex surface character. Such materials contain surface sites which facilitate enzyme-mimetic reactions via substrate coordination and redox cycling. Further, these surface reactive sites are shown to be highly sensitive to stresses within the nanomaterial lattice, the physicochemical environment, and to processing conditions occurring as part of their syntheses. When administered in vivo, a complex protein corona binds to the surface, redefining its biological identity and subsequent interactions within the biological system. Catalytic activities of rNZs each deliver a differing impact on protein corona formation, its composition, and in turn, their recognition, and internalization by host cells. Improving the understanding of the precise principles that dominate rNZ surface-biomolecule adsorption raises the question of whether designer rNZs can be engineered to prevent corona formation, or indeed to produce "custom" protein coronas applied either in vitro, and preadministration, or formed immediately upon their exposure to body fluids. Here, fundamental surface chemistry processes and their implications in rNZ material performance are considered. In particular, material structures which inform component adsorption from the application environment, including substrates for enzyme-mimetic reactions are discussed.

A critical review on the recent trends of photocatalytic, antibacterial, antioxidant and nanohybrid applications of anatase and rutile TiO2 nanoparticles

Recent advances in the use of composite titanium dioxide nanomaterials in the food industry

Titanium dioxide (TiO2 ) nanomaterials have attracted significant attention due to their good biocompatibility and potential for multifunctional applications. In the last few years, there has been growing interest in the use of TiO2 nanomaterials in the food industry. However, a systematic review of the synthesis methods, properties, and applications of TiO2 nanomaterials in the food industry is lacking. In this review, we provide a summary of the synthesis and properties of TiO2 nanomaterials and their composites, with a focus on their applications in the food industry. We also discuss the potential benefits and risks of using TiO2 nanomaterials in food applications. This review aims to promote food innovation and improve food quality and safety.

Effect in variation of the cationic precursor temperature on the electrical and crystalline properties of MnS growth by SILAR

The crystallographic, optical, and electrical properties of manganese sulfide thin films depend on the control of the temperature precursors in the synthesis process, as shown by the results of this work. MnS thin films were deposited on glass substrates using the SILAR method and over an additional layer of CdS synthesized by chemical bath deposition (CBD) to acquire a p-n heterojunction. SILAR is an inexpensive method performed with a homemade robot in this case. Temperature in the solution precursors varied from 20 to 80 °C in four experiments. The morphology and structure of MnS and FTO/CdS/MnS thin films were studied through scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and grazing-incidence X-ray diffraction (GIXRD); the results indicate that materials showed a polycrystalline behavior, a diffraction peak of α- MnS cubic phase was observed with lattice constants values, ranging from 4.74 to 4.75 Å. Additionally, Raman spectroscopy showed a signal corresponding to the transversal optical phonons of MnS at a wavenumber near 300 cm-1. UV-vis spectroscopy showed optical bandgap values of 3.94, 4.0, 4.09, and 4.26 eV for thin films obtained at 20°, 40°, 60°, and 80 °C. respectively. Results indicated 80 °C as an optimal cationic precursor process temperature, achieving optical transmittance T% and good film quality according to SEM and GIXRD for the synthetization of MnS. The current-voltage (I-V) characterization in the heterojunction showed a characteristic diode curve with an open circuit voltage (VOC) of 300 mV under illumination, which indicated that the manganese sulfide behaves as p-type material contributing with positive charge carriers, while CdS behaves as n-type material.

A Study on the Nanostructural Evolution of Bi/C Anode Materials during Their First Charge/Discharge Processes

As a candidate anode material for Li-ion batteries, Bi-based materials have attracted extensive attention from researchers due to their high specific capacity, environmental friendliness, and simple synthesis methods. However, Bi-based anode materials are prone to causing large volume changes during charging and discharging processes, and the effect of these changes on lithium storage performance is still unclear. This work introduces that Bi/C nanocomposites are prepared by the Bi-based MOF precursor calcination method, and that the Bi/C nanocomposite maintains a high specific capacity (931.6 mAh g-1) with good multiplicative performance after 100 cycles at a current density of 100 mA g-1. The structural evolution of Bi/C anode material during the first cycle of charging and discharging is investigated using in situ synchrotron radiation SAXS. The SAXS results indicate that the multistage scatterers of Bi/C composite, used as an anode material during the first lithiation, can be classified into mesopores, interspaces, and Bi nanoparticles. The different nanostructure evolutions of three types of Bi nanoparticles were observed. It is believed that this result will help to further understand the complex reaction mechanism of Bi-based anode materials in Li-ion batteries.

Alloying-Induced Structural Transition in the Promising Thermoelectric Compound CaAgSb

AMX Zintl compounds, crystallizing in several closely related layered structures, have recently garnered attention due to their exciting thermoelectric properties. In this study, we show that orthorhombic CaAgSb can be alloyed with hexagonal CaAgBi to achieve a solid solution with a structural transformation at x ∼ 0.8. This transition can be seen as a switch from three-dimensional (3D) to two-dimensional (2D) covalent bonding in which the interlayer M-X bond distances expand while the in-plane M-X distances contract. Measurements of the elastic moduli reveal that CaAgSb1-xBix becomes softer with increasing Bi content, with the exception of a steplike 10% stiffening observed at the 3D-to-2D phase transition. Thermoelectric transport measurements reveal promising Hall mobility and a peak zT of 0.47 at 620 K for intrinsic CaAgSb, which is higher than those in previous reports for unmodified CaAgSb. However, alloying with Bi was found to increase the hole concentration beyond the optimal value, effectively lowering the zT. Interestingly, analysis of the thermal conductivity and electrical conductivity suggests that the Bi-rich alloys are low Lorenz-number (L) materials, with estimated values of L well below the nondegenerate limit of L = 1.5 × 10-8 W Ω K-2, in spite of the metallic-like transport properties. A low Lorenz number decouples lattice and electronic thermal conductivities, providing greater flexibility for enhancing thermoelectric properties.

Using Graphdiyne Nanoribbons for Molecular Electronics Spectroscopy and Nucleobase Identification: A Theoretical Investigation

In pursuit of fast, cost-effective, and reliable DNA sequencing techniques, a variety of two-dimensional (2D) material-based nanodevices such as solid-state nanopores and nanochannels have been explored and established. Given the promising potential of graphene for the design and fabrication of nanobiosensors, other 2D carbon allotropes such as graphyne and graphdiyne have also attracted a great deal of attention as candidate materials for the development of sequencing technology. Herein, employing the 2D electronic molecular spectroscopy (2DMES) method, we investigate the capability of graphdiyne nanoribbons (GDNRs) as the building blocks of a feasible, precise, and ultrafast sequencing device. Using first-principles calculations, we study the adsorption of four canonical nucleobases (NBs), i.e., adenine (A), cytosine (C), guanine (G), and thymine (T) on an armchair GDNR (AGDNR). Our calculations reveal that compared to graphene, graphdiyne demonstrates more distinct binding energies for different NBs, indicating its more promising ability to unambiguously recognize DNA bases. Utilizing the 2DMES technique, we calculate the differential conductance (Δg) of the studied NB-AGDNR systems and show that the resulting Δg maps, unique for each NB-AGDNR complex, can be used to recognize each individual NB without ambiguity. We also investigate the conductance sensitivity of the proposed nanobiosensor and show that it exhibits high sensitivity and selectivity toward various NBs. Thus, our proposed graphdiyne-based nanodevice would hold promise for next-generation DNA sequencing technology.

Development of a novel Eu2+ activated oxonitridosilicate cyan phosphor for enhancing the color quality of a violet-chip-based white LED

Cyan phosphors are urgently needed to fill the cyan gap and improve the spectral continuity of white light-emitting diodes (LEDs) to cater to the high demand for high-quality lighting. Here, a series of new Eu2+-activated La3Si6.5Al1.5N9.5O5.5 (LSANO) cyan phosphors were prepared, and their luminescence properties and color centers were analyzed through fluorescence spectral measurements from 7 K to 475 K. At 300 K, the photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectrum monitored at 483 nm presents a broadband of 200-460 nm with a peak at 398 nm, matching well with commercial violet LED chips. When excited by 398 nm violet light, the photoluminescence emission (PL) spectrum of LSANO:0.01Eu2+ exhibits a cyan emission band at about 483 nm. At 7 K, the emission spectrum clearly shows an asymmetric emission band and the emission peak wavelength changes from 483 nm (300 K) to 500 nm (7 K), indicating that there are two possible color centers in the LSANO:Eu2+ phosphor. Moreover, the maximum emission value can be adjusted from 480 to 499 nm by adjusting the doping content of Eu2+. Finally, a violet-chip-based white LED with the optimized color quality of Ra = 91.4, Rf = 90.1, and Rg = 93.6 was fabricated by adding the prepared cyan phosphor, verifying the potential application of the prepared cyan phosphor LSANO:Eu2+ in high-quality white LEDs.

Enhanced magnetic susceptibility in Ti3C2Tx MXene with Co and Ni incorporation

Magnetic nanomaterials are sought to provide new functionalities for applications ranging from information processing and storage to energy generation and biomedical imaging. MXenes are a rapidly growing family of two-dimensional transition metal carbides and nitrides with versatile chemical and structural diversity, resulting in a variety of interesting electronic and optical properties. However, strategies for producing MXenes with tailored magnetic responses remain underdeveloped and challenging. Herein, we incorporate elemental Ni and Co into Ti3C2Tx MXene by mixing with dilute metal chloride solutions. We achieve a uniform distribution of Ni and Co, confirmed by X-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping with nanometer resolution, with Ni and Co concentrations of approximately 2 and 7 at% relative to the Ti concentration. The magnetic susceptibility of these Ni- and Co-incorporated Ti3C2Tx MXenes is one to two orders of magnitude larger than pristine Ti3C2Tx, illustrating the potential for dilute metal incorporation to enhance linear magnetic responses at room temperature.

Superconductivity-Electron Count Relationship in Heusler Phases-the Case of LiPd2Si

We report superconductivity in the full Heusler compound LiPd2Si (space group Fm3̅m, No. 225) at a critical temperature of Tc = 1.3 K and a normalized heat capacity jump at Tc, ΔC/γTc = 1.1. The low-temperature isothermal magnetization curves imply type-I superconductivity, as previously observed in LiPd2Ge. We show, based on density functional theory calculations and using the molecular orbital theory approach, that while LiPd2Si and LiPd2Ge share the Pd cubic cage motif that is found in most of the reported Heusler superconductors, they show distinctive features in the electronic structure. This is due to the fact that Li occupies the site which, in other compounds, is filled with an early transition metal or a rare-earth metal. Thus, while a simple valence electron count-property relationship is useful in predicting and tuning Heusler materials, inclusion of the symmetry of interacting frontier orbitals is also necessary for the best understanding.

Insight into Multiphase Interlayer Molecular Packing and Stepwise Phase Transition in 4-(Phenylazo)benzoate Anion-Intercalated Layered Zinc Hydroxide

The properties of layered intercalation hybrids are closely related to interlayer molecular packing. To develop functional intercalation hybrids, it is essential to gain deep insights into interlayer molecular packing. This work reports a new comprehensive insight into the controllable multiphase interlayer molecular packing in 4-(phenylazo)benzoate anion-intercalated layered zinc hydroxide (LZH-4-PAB intercalation hybrids). The new insight breaks up the general understanding that the interlayer molecular packing of anions is usually single-phase, lacking diversity and controllability. Furthermore, it uncovers an interesting stepwise rather than the generally expected continuous phase transition of the interlayer molecular packing. The intercalated 4-PAB anions initially organize into the horizontal monolayer packing (θ = 0°, Phase I), which stepwise transforms to the tilted interdigitated antiparallel bilayer packing (θ ≈ 50°, Phase II) along with an increased intercalation loading and eventually to the vertical interdigitated antiparallel bilayer packing (θ = 90°, Phase III). The LZH-4-PAB hybrids exhibited a greatly enhanced interlayer molecular packing-dependent UV-vis absorption. This study provides helpful guidance for developing property-tailored intercalation hybrids. It may attract new interest in more layered intercalation hybrids. New and rich intercalation chemistry might be discovered in more functional intercalation hybrids beyond the 4-PAB anion-intercalated layered zinc hydroxide.

Progress of disinfection catalysts in advanced oxidation processes, mechanisms and synergistic antibiotic degradation

Human diseases caused by pathogenic microorganisms make people pay more attention to disinfection. Meanwhile, antibiotics can cause microbial resistance and increase the difficulty of disease treatment, resulting in risk of triggering a vicious circle. Advanced oxidation process (AOPs) has been widely studied in the field of synergistic treatment of the two contaminates. This paper reviews the application of catalytic materials and their modification strategies in the context of AOPs for disinfection and antibiotic degradation. It also delves into the mechanisms of disinfection such as the pathways for microbial inactivation and the related influencing factors, which are essential for understanding the pivotal role of catalytic materials in disinfection principles by AOPs. More importantly, the exploratory research on the combined use of AOPs for disinfection and antibiotic degradation is discussed, and the potential and prospects in this field is highlighted. Finally, the limitations and challenges associated with the application of AOPs in disinfection and antibiotic degradation are summarized. It aims to provide a starting point for future research efforts to facilitate the widespread use of advanced oxidation processes in the field of public health.

Thermoelectric Hydrogel Electronic Skin for Passive Multimodal Physiological Perception

Electronic skins (e-skins) are being extensively researched for their ability to recognize physiological data and deliver feedback via electrical signals. However, their wide range of applications is frequently restricted by the indispensableness of external power supplies and single sensory function. Here, we report a passive multimodal e-skin for real-time human health assessment based on a thermoelectric hydrogel. The hydrogel network consists of poly(vinyl alcohol)/low acyl gellan gum with [Fe(CN)6]4-/3- as the redox couple. The introduction of glycerol and Li+ furnishes the gel-based e-skin with antidrying and antifreezing properties, a thermopower of 2.04 mV K-1, fast self-healing in less than 10 min, and high conductivity of 2.56 S m-1. As a prospective application, the e-skin can actively perceive multimodal physiological signals without the need for decoupling, including body temperature, pulse rate, and sweat content, in real time by synergistically coupling sensing and transduction. This work offers a scientific basis and designs an approach to develop passive multimodal e-skins and promotes the application of wearable electronics in advanced intelligent medicine.

Translational and reorientational dynamics in carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents

The glass formation and the dipolar reorientational motions in deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are frequently overlooked, despite their crucial role in defining the room-temperature physiochemical properties. To understand the effects of these dynamics on the ionic conductivity and their relation to the mechanical properties of the DES, we conducted broadband dielectric and rheological spectroscopy over a wide temperature range on three well-established carboxylic acid-based natural DESs. These are the eutectic mixtures of choline chloride with oxalic acid (oxaline), malonic acid (maline), and phenylacetic acid (phenylaceline). In all three DESs, we observe signs of a glass transition in the temperature dependence of their dipolar reorientational and structural dynamics, as well as varying degrees of motional decoupling between the different observed dynamics. Maline and oxaline display a breaking of the Walden rule near the glass-transition temperature, while the relation between the dc conductivity and dipolar relaxation time in both maline and phenylaceline is best described by a power law. The glass-forming properties of the investigated systems not only govern the orientational dipolar motions and rheological properties, which are of interest from a fundamental point of view, but they also affect the dc conductivity, even at room temperature, which is of high technical relevance.

Superexchange-stabilized long-distance Cu sites in rock-salt-ordered double perovskite oxides for CO2 electromethanation

Cu-oxide-based catalysts are promising for CO2 electroreduction (CO2RR) to CH4, but suffer from inevitable reduction (to metallic Cu) and uncontrollable structural collapse. Here we report Cu-based rock-salt-ordered double perovskite oxides with superexchange-stabilized long-distance Cu sites for efficient and stable CO2-to-CH4 conversion. For the proof-of-concept catalyst of Sr2CuWO6, its corner-linked CuO6 and WO6 octahedral motifs alternate in all three crystallographic dimensions, creating sufficiently long Cu-Cu distances (at least 5.4 Å) and introducing marked superexchange interaction mainly manifested by O-anion-mediated electron transfer (from Cu to W sites). In CO2RR, the Sr2CuWO6 exhibits significant improvements (up to 14.1 folds) in activity and selectivity for CH4, together with well boosted stability, relative to a physical-mixture counterpart of CuO/WO3. Moreover, the Sr2CuWO6 is the most effective Cu-based-perovskite catalyst for CO2 methanation, achieving a remarkable selectivity of 73.1% at 400 mA cm-2 for CH4. Our experiments and theoretical calculations highlight the long Cu-Cu distances promoting *CO hydrogenation and the superexchange interaction stabilizing Cu sites as responsible for the superb performance.

Chemically Engineered Titanium Oxide Interconnecting Layer for Multijunction Polymer Solar Cells

We report chemically tunable n-type titanium oxides using ethanolamine as a nitrogen dopant source. As the amount of ethanolamine added to the titanium oxide precursor during synthesis increases, the Fermi level of the resulting titanium oxides (ethanolamine-incorporated titanium oxides) significantly changes from -4.9 eV to -4.3 eV, and their free charge carrier densities are enhanced by two orders of magnitudes, reaching up to 5 × 1018 cm-3. Unexpectedly, a basic ethanolamine reinforces not only the n-type properties of titanium oxides, but also their basicity, which facilitates acid-base ionic junctions in contact with acidic materials. The enhanced charge carrier density and basicity of the chemically tuned titanium oxides enable multi-junction solar cells to have interconnecting junctions consisting of basic n-type titanium oxides and acidic p-type PEDOT:PSS to gain high open-circuit voltages of 1.44 V and 2.25 V from tandem and triple architectures, respectively.
