Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between frailty and neoplasms has attracted increasing attention from researchers in recent years. This study aims to identify current research hotspots and status in this field through bibliometric and visualization analysis. METHODS Literature on the relationship between frailty and neoplasms, meeting the inclusion criteria, was collected from the Core Collection. Bibliometric analysis and visualization were performed using WoS, VOSviewer, and CiteSpace. RESULTS Our study included 7410 documents on frailty and neoplasms, authored by 43,605 researchers from 9478 institutions across 115 countries, and published in 2067 journals. The USA emerged as the most productive and influential country in this field, with 3059 publications and 89,319 citations. The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center and Mayo Clinic were recognized as the most productive institution and the institution with the highest citation count, respectively. The Journal of Geriatric Oncology was the leading publisher. Kirsten K Ness and James L Kirkland were identified as the most productive and most cited authors, respectively. Cluster analysis identified five key areas: body condition and nutrition, quality of life, frailty, mortality and care, and the elderly and frailty. CONCLUSION The relationship between frailty and neoplasms remains a contentious and frequently discussed topic. Our findings indicate that research primarily focuses on cancer, the elderly, clinical trials, adverse health outcomes, frailty assessment, and nutrition.

Abstract
The vitamin D3 metabolite 1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 (1,25(OH)2D3), its nuclear receptor VDR (vitamin D receptor) and hundreds of their target genes are not only key regulators of calcium homeostasis, but also important modulators of the immune system. Innate immune cells like monocytes use VDR for efficient differentiation and are very responsive to vitamin D. So far, most information on the gene regulatory function of vitamin D and its physiological impact had been obtained from in vitro studies using supraphysiological doses of 1,25(OH)2D3. Therefore, medical experiments like the study VitDHiD (NCT03537027), where 25 healthy individuals were supplemented once with a vitamin D3 bolus (80,000 IU), provide important insight into the response to vitamin D under in vivo conditions. In this study, we inspected 452 in vivo vitamin D target genes from peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) detected in VitDHiD and found 61 of them involved in eight major KEGG (Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes) pathways of innate immunity. Under in vivo conditions in healthy individuals vitamin D either silences five pathways of innate immunity, stabilizes two and increases one, so that acute inflammation is suppressed and the release of cytokines is kept under control. A ranking of the 61 target genes by inducibility, basal expression and multiple involvements in the pathways highlighted the genes NFKBIA (NFκB inhibitor alpha), NFKBIZ, FOSL2 (FOS like 2, AP1 transcription factor subunit), JDP2 (Jun dimerization protein 2), PIK3R1 (phosphoinositide-3-kinase regulatory subunit 1), CLEC7A (C-type lectin domain containing 7A), DUSP6 (dual specificity phosphatase 6), NCF2 (neutrophil cytosolic factor 2), PLCB1 (phospholipase C beta 1), PLCG2 and TNFAIP3 (TNF alpha induced protein 3). In conclusion, vitamin D's in vivo effect on innate immunity in healthy adults is mediated by the interconnection of the pathways of neutrophil extracellular trap formation, Toll-like receptor, chemokine and phagosome signaling, NOD-like receptor, C-type lectin receptor, apoptosis and interleukin 17 through a limited set of proteins encoded by key target genes.

Abstract
Vitamin D, a crucial fat-soluble vitamin, is primarily synthesized in the skin upon exposure to ultraviolet radiation and is widely recognized as a bone-associated hormone. However, recent scientific advancements have unveiled its intricate association with gut health. The intestinal barrier serves as a vital component, safeguarding the intestinal milieu and maintaining overall homeostasis. Deficiencies in vitamin D have been implicated in altering the gut microbiome composition, compromising the integrity of the intestinal mucosal barrier, and predisposing individuals to various intestinal pathologies. Vitamin D exerts its regulatory function by binding to vitamin D receptors (VDR) present in immune cells, thereby modulating the production of pro-inflammatory cytokines and influencing the intestinal barrier function. Notably, numerous studies have reported lower serum vitamin D levels among patients suffering from intestinal diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease, irritable bowel syndrome, and celiac disease, highlighting the growing significance of vitamin D in gut health maintenance. This comprehensive review delves into the latest advancements in understanding the mechanistic role of vitamin D in modulating the gut microbiome and intestinal barrier function, emphasizing its pivotal role in immune regulation. Furthermore, we consolidate and present relevant findings pertaining to the therapeutic potential of vitamin D in the management of intestinal diseases.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Most research examining vitamin D and dental caries focuses on children and younger adults. This study investigated the association between vitamin D levels and dental caries in older adults using data from the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2011 to 2016. METHODS Data were analyzed from 2723 participants aged 65 years and older who completed both dental examinations and serum 25(OH)D tests. Dental caries assessments included the decayed, missing, and filled teeth (DMFT) index and the presence of untreated dental caries. Vitamin D levels were measured as serum 25(OH)D concentrations and categorized as severely deficient (<25 nmol/L), deficient (25-49.9 nmol/L), insufficient (50-74.9 nmol/L), and normal (≥75 nmol/L). Logistic regression and Poisson regression models were used to assess the association between vitamin D levels and dental caries, adjusting for demographic factors. RESULTS The mean DMFT score was 17.73 ± 8.34, with 35.1% of participants having untreated dental caries. Vitamin D deficiency was associated with a 1.44 times higher likelihood of untreated caries (95% CI: 1.15, 1.81), which weakened after adjustment for demographic factors (adjusted OR: 1.23, 95% CI: 0.97, 1.55). Severe vitamin D deficiency correlated with a 1.13 times higher DMFT score (95% CI: 1.06, 1.20), with the association remaining similar after adjustment (adjusted RR: 1.12, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.20). Significant differences in vitamin D levels were observed across gender, race/ethnicity, and country of birth. CONCLUSIONS This study suggests the potential importance of adequate vitamin D levels for maintaining dental health among older adults. Vitamin D deficiency is associated with a higher risk of poorer DMFT scores. Public health strategies that include vitamin D screening and supplementation, particularly for high-risk groups, may improve oral health outcomes in the older adult population. Further research is needed to elucidate the mechanisms by which vitamin D influences dental health and the potential for vitamin D supplementation to reduce the burden of dental caries in older adults.

Abstract
White adipose tissue (WAT) has been recognized as a fundamental and crucial organ of interest in research focusing on inflammation during obesity or aging. WAT is also proposed as a significant component of cholecalciferol and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) storage, which participates in the decrease of 25(OH)D plasma levels reported during aging and obesity. In the present study, we evaluated WAT and plasma cholecalciferol and 25(OH)D content together with inflammatory status to highlight the putative relationship between vitamin D status and inflammatory process during aging alone or combined with obesity. Circulating cholecalciferol and 25(OH)D and the stored quantity of cholecalciferol and 25(OH)D in WAT were quantified in young and old mice fed a control or obesogenic diet. The inflammation was assessed by measuring plasma inflammatory cytokines, mRNA, and microRNAs inflammatory-associated in WAT. The combination of aging and obesity decreased 25(OH)D plasma levels but did not modify circulating inflammatory markers. A cumulative effect of aging and obesity was observed in WAT, with rising mRNA inflammatory cytokines, notably Ccl5 and Tnf. Interestingly, aging and obesity-associated were also characterized by increased inflammatory microRNA expression. The inflammatory parameters in WAT were negatively correlated with the plasma 25(OH)D but positively correlated with the quantity of cholecalciferol and 25(OH)D in WAT. These results support the cumulative effect of obesity and aging in aggravation of WAT inflammation and suggest that accumulation of cholecalciferol and 25(OH)D in WAT could constitute a mechanism to counteract WAT inflammation during aging and obesity.

Abstract
An adequate vitamin D level is essential for optimal bone mass formation during growth. The present study aimed to assess (i) the sex-specific, age-specific, and potential seasonal (spring, summer, winter) influences on the pediatric circulating levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D); (ii) determine the frequency of pediatric patients with vitamin D deficiency (VDD) or insufficiency (VDI); and (iii) quantify the association between age category, sex, and season types and susceptibility to VDD and VDI, respectively. Laboratory data were collected on serum 25(OH)D levels in children aged between 2 and 18 years (n = 1674) who underwent blood sampling following admission to a university pediatric hospital in Cluj-Napoca (Romania) between January and June 2023. VDD (<20 ng/mL) was observed in 27% of pediatric patients. Among toddlers and preschoolers (2-5 years), VDD was 11%, while it was 33% among school-aged children (6-11 years) and 39% among adolescents (12-18 years). We found a significant difference in the frequencies of vitamin D status between females and males (p = 0.006). Also, we found significant associations of vitamin D status with age categories (p < 0.0001) and seasonal variations (p = 0.03). After adjusting for season of blood collection, the multinomial logistic regression model showed that children aged 6-11 years old (adjusted OR = 7, 95% CI: (4.9, 9.4)), children aged 12-18 years old (adjusted OR = 14, 95% CI: (9.3, 19.6)), and females (adjusted OR = 1.43, 95% CI: (1.10, 1.86)) were significantly associated with higher odds of VDD. In conclusion, the study revealed a significant difference in the frequency of VDD and VDI among pediatric patients older than six years, with a significant difference according to sex and season, being more pronounced among girls and during the winter and spring seasons.

Abstract
Vitamin D plays a critical role in many physiological functions, including calcium metabolism and musculoskeletal health. This commentary aims to explore the intricate relationships among skin complexion, race, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D) levels, focusing on challenges the Endocrine Society encountered during clinical practice guideline development. Given that increased melanin content reduces 25(OH)D production in the skin in response to UV light, the guideline development panel addressed the potential role for 25(OH)D screening in individuals with dark skin complexion. The panel discovered that no randomized clinical trials have directly assessed vitamin D related patient-important outcomes based on participants' skin pigmentation, although race and ethnicity often served as presumed proxies for skin pigmentation in the literature. In their deliberations, guideline panel members and selected Endocrine Society leaders underscored the critical need to distinguish between skin pigmentation as a biological variable and race and ethnicity as socially determined constructs. This differentiation is vital to maximize scientific rigor and, thus, the validity of resulting recommendations. Lessons learned from the guideline development process emphasize the necessity of clarity when incorporating race and ethnicity into clinical guidelines. Such clarity is an essential step toward improving health outcomes and ensuring equitable healthcare practices.

Abstract
CONTEXT Low vitamin D status is common and is associated with various common medical conditions. OBJECTIVE To support the development of the Endocrine Society's Clinical Practice Guideline on Vitamin D for the Prevention of Disease. METHODS We searched multiple databases for studies that addressed 14 clinical questions prioritized by the guideline panel. Of the 14 questions, 10 clinical questions assessed the effect of vitamin D vs no vitamin D in the general population throughout the lifespan, during pregnancy, and in adults with prediabetes; 1 question assessed dosing; and 3 questions addressed screening with serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25[OH]D). The Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation approach was used to assess certainty of evidence. RESULTS Electronic searches yielded 37 007 citations, from which we included 151 studies. In children and adolescents, low-certainty evidence suggested reduction in respiratory tract infections with empiric vitamin D. There was no significant effect on select outcomes in healthy adults aged 19 to 74 years with variable certainty of evidence. There was a very small reduction in mortality among adults older than 75 years with high certainty of evidence. In pregnant women, low-certainty evidence suggested possible benefit on various maternal, fetal, and neonatal outcomes. In adults with prediabetes, moderate certainty of evidence suggested reduction in the rate of progression to diabetes. Administration of high-dose intermittent vitamin D may increase falls, compared to lower-dose daily dosing. We did not identify trials on the benefits and harms of screening with serum 25(OH)D. CONCLUSION The evidence summarized in this systematic review addresses the benefits and harms of vitamin D for the prevention of disease. The guideline panel considered additional information about individuals' and providers' values and preferences and other important decisional and contextual factors to develop clinical recommendations.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency is associated with several obstetric complications in singleton pregnancy. The aim of this study was to assess whether vitamin D levels affect the outcomes of twin pregnancy and if targeted supplementation can improve perinatal outcomes. METHODS The serum vitamin D levels of 143 women with twin pregnancies were measured during their first trimester. Those with insufficient (10-30 ng/mL; IL group) or severely deficient (<10 ng/mL, DL group) vitamin D levels were supplemented. In the third trimester, vitamin D levels were reassessed. Perinatal outcomes of the IL and DL groups were compared with those of patients with sufficient levels (>30 ng/mL, SL group) since the beginning of pregnancy. RESULTS Women in the IL and DL groups had a higher incidence of hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) compared to the SL group (24.8% and 27.8% vs. 12.5%, p = 0.045): OR = 1.58 for the IL group and 1.94 for the DL group compared to the SL group. In patients whose vitamin D levels were restored after supplementation, HDP incidence was lower than in patients who remained in the IL or DL groups (23.4% vs. 27.3%) but higher than those who were always in the SL group (12.5%). CONCLUSIONS Insufficient or severely deficient levels of vitamin D in the first trimester are associated with an increased risk of HDP in twin pregnancy. The beneficial effect of targeted vitamin D supplementation in reducing HDP seems limited.

Abstract
This retrospective cohort study explores the relationship between vitamin D levels and 5-year mortality risk among 1,549 colon cancer patients seen at University of California health centers between 2012 and 2019, with a particular focus on the mediating role of comorbidities. Methods leveraged structural equation modeling to assess both direct and indirect pathways linking vitamin D to mortality risk. This analysis revealed a protective direct effect of higher vitamin D levels against mortality risk. Additionally, this study uncovered an indirect pathway, demonstrating that vitamin D lowers mortality risk by mitigating comorbidity, which subsequently influence mortality risk. Study results indicate that approximately 9.2% of the beneficial effect of vitamin D on mortality risk is attributable to its capacity to reduce comorbidity burden. In disaggregated and confounder-adjusted structural modeling, there were significant indirect effects for 25(OH)D on mortality risk through its effects on depression and obesity but not on anxiety, diabetes, or chronic kidney disease. These results suggest that the protective effects of vitamin D in colon cancer etiology appear to be through direct action on cancer progression, though patients who also suffer from depression and obesity would especially benefit from achieving adequate levels of serum vitamin D.

Abstract
Objectives: This study, based on the concept of immuno-inflammatory-metabolic (IIM) dysregulation, investigated and compared the prognostic impact of 27 indices at admission for prediction of postoperative myocardial injury (PMI) and/or hospital death in hip fracture (HF) patients. Methods: In consecutive HF patient (n = 1273, mean age 82.9 ± 8.7 years, 73.5% females) demographics, medical history, laboratory parameters, and outcomes were recorded prospectively. Multiple logistic regression and receiver-operating characteristic analyses (the area under the curve, AUC) were used to establish the predictive role for each biomarker. Results: Among 27 IIM biomarkers, 10 indices were significantly associated with development of PMI and 16 were indicative of a fatal outcome; in the subset of patients aged >80 years with ischaemic heart disease (IHD, the highest risk group: 90.2% of all deaths), the corresponding figures were 26 and 20. In the latter group, the five strongest preoperative predictors for PMI were anaemia (AUC 0.7879), monocyte/eosinophil ratio > 13.0 (AUC 0.7814), neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio > 7.5 (AUC 0.7784), eosinophil count < 1.1 × 109/L (AUC 0.7780), and neutrophil/albumin × 10 > 2.4 (AUC 0.7732); additionally, sensitivity was 83.1-75.4% and specificity was 82.1-75.0%. The highest predictors of in-hospital death were platelet/lymphocyte ratio > 280.0 (AUC 0.8390), lymphocyte/monocyte ratio < 1.1 (AUC 0.8375), albumin < 33 g/L (AUC 0.7889), red cell distribution width > 14.5% (AUC 0.7739), and anaemia (AUC 0.7604), sensitivity 88.2% and above, and specificity 85.1-79.3%. Internal validation confirmed the predictive value of the models. Conclusions: Comparison of 27 IIM indices in HF patients identified several simple, widely available, and inexpensive parameters highly predictive for PMI and/or in-hospital death. The applicability of IIM biomarkers to diagnose and predict risks for chronic diseases, including OP/OF, in the preclinical stages is discussed.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the histopathological findings of patients who had been diagnosed with dermatochalasis (DC) and had undergone upper eyelid blepharoplasty (ULB) as well as those of controls (C-Group) according to their serum vitamin D (SVD) levels. METHODS The prospective study included 136 upper eyelid skin from 68 patients who underwent surgery for DC and 53 upper eyelid skin from 53 patients who underwent levator surgery with ULB. The DC Group was then divided into 3 subgroups according to the marginal reflex distance (MRD4). The lymphatic vessel (LV) count and diameter of the largest LV (DLLV) were recorded, the stromal collagen bed (SCB) was observed, and its depth was measured, the interfibrillar edema was examined, and the elastic fiber and macrophage counts and recorded, respectively, and then all of these were evaluated. The SVD levels were compared between the DC patients and the C-Group. RESULTS In comparison to the C-Group, significant changes were seen in the dilated LV, DLLV, SCB depth, interfibrillar edema, elastic fiber density, and macrophage count in the DC sub-Groups (P < 0.001 for all). While no difference was found between DC sub-Group 1 (MRD4 > 4 mm) and the C-Group (P > 0.05), a significant difference was found between DC sub-Group 2 (MRD4 2-4 mm) and DC sub-Group 3 (MRD4 < 2 mm) for all of the parameters (P < 0.05). A statistically significant difference was also found in the SVD levels between the DC sub-Group 1 and DC sub-Groups 2-3 (P < 0.017, P < 0.001 respectively). CONCLUSION According to the results of this study, SVD level was significantly lower in DC group. Moreover, an increased LV count and diameter, decreased elastic fiber count, collagen fiber and stromal edema irregularity, and increased macrophage count were found to be associated with the SVD level.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adipose tissue is significantly involved in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Vitamin D can affect both adipogenesis and inflammation. The aim of this study was to compare the production of selected adipokines, potentially involved in the pathogenesis of IBD - adiponectin, resistin, retinol binding protein 4 (RBP-4), adipocyte fatty acid binding protein and nesfatin-1 in children with IBD according to the presence of 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) deficiency. METHODS The study was conducted as a case-control study in pediatric patients with IBD and healthy children of the same sex and age. In addition to adipokines and 25(OH)D, anthropometric parameters, markers of inflammation and disease activity were assessed in all participants. RESULTS Children with IBD had significantly higher resistin levels regardless of 25(OH)D levels. IBD patients with 25(OH)D deficiency only had significantly lower RBP-4 compared to healthy controls and also compared to IBD patients without 25(OH)D deficiency. No other significant differences in adipokines were found in children with IBD with or without 25(OH)D deficiency. 25(OH)D levels in IBD patients corelated with RBP-4 only, and did not correlate with other adipokines. CONCLUSIONS Whether the lower RBP-4 levels in the 25(OH)D-deficient group of IBD patients directly reflect vitamin D deficiency remains uncertain. The production of other adipokines does not appear to be directly related to vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES Vitamin D status has been shown to be associated with prediabetes risk. However, epidemiologic evidence on whether sex modulates the association between vitamin D and prediabetes is limited. The present study investigated sex-specific associations between vitamin D and prediabetes. SUBJECTS/METHODS The Kuwait Wellbeing Study, a population-based cross-sectional study, enrolled nondiabetic adults. Prediabetes was defined as 5.7 ≤ HbA1c% ≤6.4; 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) was measured in venous blood and analyzed as a continuous, dichotomous (deficiency: <50 nmol/L vs. insufficiency/sufficiency ≥50 nmol/L), and categorical (tertiles) variable. Associations were evaluated by estimating adjusted prevalence ratios (aPRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs), while stratifying by sex. RESULTS A total of 384 participants (214 males and 170 females) were included in the current analysis, with a median age of 40.5 (interquartile range: 33.0-48.0) years. The prevalence of prediabetes was 35.2%, and 63.0% of participants had vitamin D deficiency. Assessments of statistical interaction between sex and 25(OH)D status were statistically significant (PSex × 25(OH)D Interaction < 0.05). In the sex-stratified analysis, after adjustment for confounding factors, decreased 25(OH)D levels were associated with increased prevalence of prediabetes in males (aPRDeficiency vs. In-/Sufficiency: 2.35, 95% CI: 1.36-4.07), but not in females (aPRDeficiency vs. In-/Sufficiency: 1.03, 95% CI: 0.60-1.77). Moreover, the prevalence of prediabetes differed between males and females at 25(OH)D levels of ≤35 nmol/L, with a higher prevalence of prediabetes in males compared to females. Such a sex-specific difference was not observed at 25(OH)D levels of >35 nmol/L. CONCLUSIONS Sex modified the association between vitamin D levels and prediabetes, with an inverse association observed among males, but not among females. Moreover, the observed sex-disparity in the prevalence of prediabetes was only pronounced at 25(OH)D levels of ≤35 nmol/L.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus (DM) has affected over 387 million patients globally, expected to reach 592 million by the end of 2035. It is a metabolic disorder characterized by chronic hyperglycemia caused by either insulin deficiency, insulin resistance, or both. MATERIALS AND METHODS The present study was designed to estimate the levels of different bone markers; serum Vitamin D, alkaline phosphatase, phosphorus, and calcium in patients with type 2 DM (T2DM). The study was conducted on patients aged 20-50 years diagnosed with T2DM, who were attending the outpatient/inpatient department of internal medicine. RESULTS The levels of calcium were decreased in the patients with diabetes and also the study proved a negative correlation between calcium and random plasma glucose (RPG). There was a significant negative correlation between RPG and serum 25(OH)D3. CONCLUSION We conclude that Vitamin D insufficiency is frequent in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh. Sunshine exposure daily for 15 min on the face and hands is necessary to elevate the sunlight Vitamin D levels.

Abstract
This study involved fortifying pumpkin slices with calcium and vitamin D3 using vacuum impregnation (VI) pre-treatment and assessing the quality characteristics of the resulting desserts/jams. Slices were subjected to immersion or VI pre-treatments for 30, 60, and 90 min in a solution containing calcium oxide and vitamin D3. Calcium ions contributed to the hardness of desserts, with VI reducing processing time. The highest impregnated calcium (58.17 mg/100 g fw) and vitamin D3 contents (6.02 mg/100 g dm) were determined in slices pre-treated by VI for 90 min. VI was more effective than immersion in terms of calcium and vitamin D3 transition into pumpkin tissues. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) images indicated that calcium oxide particles were noticeable in slices pre-treated by VI. Immersing fruit slices for 90 min produced desserts with a textural hardness of 11.04 N, while VI pre-treatment for the same duration increased their hardness value to 18.92 N. Desserts produced with VI-pre-treated slices exhibited superior texture and sensory attributes, with no adverse taste resulting from calcium oxide. In conclusion, VI pre-treatment shows significant potential for the industrial production of desserts/jams with enhanced structural integrity for fruits.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although the beneficial properties of vitamin D in anti-inflammation and immunity-modulation are promising in the management of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), data were limited for the critical IBD prognosis. The association between serum vitamin D levels and the risk of bowel resection in individuals with IBD remains largely unknown. MATERIALS AND METHODS The authors performed a longitudinal cohort study among 5474 individuals with IBD in the UK Biobank. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] was measured using direct competitive chemiluminescent immunoassay. Bowel resection events were ascertained via national inpatient data. Multivariable-adjusted Cox proportional hazard regression was used to examine the association between serum 25(OH)D and bowel resection risk, presented with hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% CIs. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) was used to evaluate dose-response associations. RESULTS During a mean follow-up of 13.1 years, the authors documented 513 incident bowel resection cases. Compared to participants with vitamin D deficiency, nondeficient participants showed a significantly reduced bowel resection risk in IBD (HR 0.72, 95% CI: 0.59-0.87, P =0.001), Crohn's disease (CD, HR 0.74, 95% CI: 0.56-0.98, P =0.038), and ulcerative colitis (UC, HR 0.73, 95% CI: 0.57-0.95, P =0.020). When comparing extreme quintiles of 25(OH)D level, participants with IBD showed a 34% reduced risk of bowel resection (95% CI: 11-51%, P =0.007) and participants with UC showed a 46% reduced risk (95% CI: 19-64%, P =0.003), while this association was not significant in CD (HR 0.93, 95% CI: 0.59-1.45, P =0.740). Linear dose-response associations were observed using the RCS curve (all P -nonlinearity>0.05). CONCLUSION Increased serum level of 25(OH)D is independently associated with reduced bowel resection risk in IBD. This association was significant in UC but may not be stable in CD. Vitamin D deficiency is a risk factor for bowel resection in individuals with IBD, and may be an effective metric in predicting and risk-screening surgical events.

Abstract
Widely varying prevalence of vitamin D deficiency has been reported in patients presenting for total knee arthroplasty (TKA). The primary aim of this study was to determine vitamin D levels in TKA patients and to compare to patients already routinely evaluated for vitamin D levels, patients with fragility fractures of the distal radius (DRF). There is significant overlap between patients presenting for TKA and with DRF, both in terms of medical comorbidities and overall health status, making these populations suitable comparative cohorts. Wefound that all patients presenting for TKA consultation had vitamin D insufficiency and 33% had vitamin D deficiency, compared to only 37% and 14% in the DRF cohort, a patient population routinely evaluated for vitamin D due to the high risk of deficiency. Furthermore, patients with DRF had higher levels of vitamin D before (38 ± 16 vs. 23 ± 5) and after vitamin D supplementation (39 ± 17 vs. 33 ± 10), suggesting that patients presenting for TKA are at even higher risk of vitamin D insufficiency than patients presenting with DRF. Reassuringly, supplementation successfully corrected 39.0% and 55.8% of patients in the DRF and TKA cohorts, respectively.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Adequate levels of calcium, phosphate and Vitamin D are essential for bone physiology and growth, as well as preventing some common childhood illnesses. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of the deficiencies of these nutrients and factors affecting their serum levels in Nigerian children. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study that involved 220 apparently healthy children aged 6-24 months in Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, Nigeria. Serum calcium and phosphate were assayed using the calorimetric method, while Vitamin D (25-OH Vitamin D) was assayed with ELISA. RESULTS The mean (±standard deviation [SD]) serum Vitamin D level was 55.07 ± 16.53 ng/ml, while the mean (±SD) serum calcium and phosphate were 2.27 ± 0.13 mmol/l and 1.28 ± 0.18 mmol/l, respectively. Eleven (5%) of the children had hypovitaminosis D, 23 (10.5%) had hypocalcaemia and 12 (5.5%) had hypophosphataemia. Factors found to be significantly associated with hypovitaminosis D included low consumption of milk and the use of a hijab veil, while malnutrition (both undernutrition and overnutrition) was significantly associated with hypocalcaemia. CONCLUSION The prevalence levels of hypovitaminosis D and hypophosphataemia were low, while hypocalcaemia was more common. Low milk consumption and use of a hijab veil were risk factors for hypovitaminosis D, while malnutrition was a risk factor for hypocalcaemia. Malnourished children, especially overnourished ones, should be routinely screened for hypocalcaemia because of its high prevalence among them.

Abstract
Although the impact that vitamin D has on bone healing is uncertain in foot and ankle (F&A) surgery, there is support for vitamin D supplementation (2000 IU/day) with calcium (1 g/day) to promote bone healing. Although orthopedic F&A surgeons are frequently the first provider to detect the harbingers of osteoporosis by the occurrence of fragility fractures, this should trigger referral to the appropriate specialist for assessment and treatment. There is circumstantial evidence suggesting a role of hypovitaminosis D in bone marrow edema syndrome and possibly osteochondritis dissecans. There should be a low threshold for assessing vitamin D levels in such patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine associations between Vitamin D (VD) levels and clinical depression through the Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS) and its questions and subdomains, stratified by demographics and Hispanic/Latino ethnicity (HLE). DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS A cohort of 299 Project FRONTIER participants aged 62.6 ± 11.7 years old, 70.9% female, and 40.5% HLE were used. Standard correlation and regression analyses were employed. MEASUREMENTS The main outcome measures were VD (serum 25(OH)-VD) level, GDS-30 (30-item questionnaire), GDS-30 subfactors and questions, and HLE status. VD categories were defined as VD deficiency (VDD; ≤20 ng/mL), VD insufficiency (VDI; 21-29 ng/mL), VD sufficiency (30-38 ng/mL) and high VD sufficiency (>38 ng/mL). RESULTS The majority (61.5%) of samples fell into VDD/VDI categories. A significant negative association was found between VD level and GDS-30 total score. VD level was negatively correlated with Dysphoria and Meaninglessness GDS-30 subfactors. Although GDS subfactors were similar between HLE and non-HLE groups, VD levels were significantly lower in HLE samples. Finally, HLE/non-HLE groups were differentially stratified across VD categories. Only 4% of HLEs fell into the high VD sufficient category, suggesting low VD supplementation. CONCLUSION A significant negative association between VD level and depressive symptoms was revealed in our aging Project FRONTIER participants. HLE individuals were overrepresented in VDD/VDI samples, and VDD/VDI was associated primarily with the Dysphoria GDS subdomain. Regression analysis predicted high VD sufficiency (95.5 ng/mL) to be associated with no depressive symptoms (GDS=0). Our results underscore troubling disparities in VD-related depressive symptoms between HLE and non-HLE populations.

Abstract
Objetive: Serum and dietary vitamin D could influence clinical disease activity and cardiometabolic outcomes in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). This study aimed to assess the relationship of serum and dietary vitamin D with cardiometabolic risk in Mexican SLE patients and healthy subjects (HS).Methods: 224 SLE patients and 201 HS were included in this cross-sectional study. Serum calcidiol was measured using a competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Vitamin D dietary intake was assessed by collecting three 24h food records. Dietary patterns (DPs) were identified using principal component analysis (PCA). Cardiometabolic status was analyzed through biochemical measurements and cardiometabolic indexes.Results: Calcidiol deficiency (<20 ng/mL) was associated with 1.66-fold higher risk of excess weight by body mass index (BMI) (≥25 kg/m2) (p = .02), 2.25-fold higher risk to low high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C) (<40 mg/dL) (p < .001), and 1.74-fold higher risk to high triglycerides (TG) ≥150 mg/dL (p = .02). Inadequate vitamin D dietary intake was associated with 1.92-fold higher risk of presenting non-healthy waist circumference (WC) (>80 cm) (p < .01), 2.05-fold higher risk of android waist to hip ratio (WHR ≥85) (p < .01), and 1.72-fold higher risk to excess weight (p = .02). Non-adherence to a DP rich in vitamin D food sources was associated with higher WC, WHR, triglycerides, and lower high-density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C); furthermore, in HS, non-adherence to the DP rich in vitamin D food sources provided 2.11-fold higher risk to calcidiol deficiency.In Cconclusion: A pattern of Calcidiol deficiency, inadequate vitamin D dietary intake, and non-adherence to a DP rich in vitamin D food sources was related to high cardiometabolic risk in SLE patients and HS.

Abstract
The low vertebral bone computed tomography (CT) Hounsfield unit values measured on CT scans reflect low bone mineral density (BMD) and are known as diagnostic indicators for osteoporosis. The potential prognostic significance of low BMD defined by vertebral bone CT values for the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) remains unclear. This study aimed to assess the impact of BMD on the clinical outcome in Japanese patients with COVID-19 and evaluate the association between BMD and critical outcomes, such as high-flow nasal cannula, non-invasive and invasive positive pressure ventilation, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation, or death. We examined the effects of COVID-19 severity on the change of BMD over time. This multicenter retrospective cohort study enrolled 1132 inpatients with COVID-19 from the Japan COVID-19 Task Force database between February 2020 and September 2022. The bone CT values of the 4th, 7th, and 10th thoracic vertebrae were measured from chest CT images. The average of these values was defined as BMD. Furthermore, a comparative analysis was conducted between the BMD on admission and its value 3 months later. The low BMD group had a higher proportion of critical outcomes than did the high BMD group. In a subanalysis stratifying patients by epidemic wave according to onset time, critical outcomes were higher in the low BMD group in the 1st-4th waves. Multivariable logistic analysis of previously reported factors associated with COVID-19 severity revealed that low BMD, chronic kidney disease, and diabetes were independently associated with critical outcomes. At 3 months post-infection, patients with oxygen demand during hospitalization showed markedly decreased BMD than did those on admission. Low BMD in patients with COVID-19 may help predict severe disease after the disease onset. BMD may decrease over time in patients with severe COVID-19, and the impact on sequelae symptoms should be investigated in the future.

Abstract
Circulating calcitriol may contribute to the risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD), but its regulation in patients with CVD is poorly characterized. We therefore aimed to assess determinants of circulating calcitriol in these patients. We analyzed 2183 independent samples from a large cohort of patients scheduled for coronary angiography and 1727 independent samples from different other cohorts from patients with a wide range of CVDs, including heart transplant candidates, to quantify the association of different parameters with circulating calcitriol. We performed univariable and multivariable linear regression analyses using the mathematical function that fitted best with circulating calcitriol. In the multivariable analysis of the large single cohort, nine parameters remained significant, explaining 30.0 % (32.4 % after exclusion of 22 potential outliers) of the variation in circulating calcitriol (r=0.548). Log-transformed 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] and log-transformed glomerular filtration rate were the strongest predictors, explaining 17.6 % and 6.6 %, respectively, of the variation in calcitriol. In the analysis of the combined other cohorts, including heart transplant candidates, the multivariable model explained a total of 42.6 % (46.1 % after exclusion of 21 potential outliers) of the variation in calcitriol (r=0.653) with log-transformed fibroblast growth factor-23 and log-transformed 25(OH)D explaining 29.0 % and 6.2 %, respectively. Circulating 25(OH)D was positively and FGF-23 inversely associated with circulating calcitriol. Although significant, PTH was only a weak predictor of calcitriol in both analyses (<2.5 %). In patients with CVD, FGF-23 and 25(OH)D are important independent determinants of circulating calcitriol. The relative importance of these two parameters may vary according to CVD severity. Future studies should focus on the clinical importance of regulating circulating calcitriol by different parameters.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Sufficient levels of vitamin D have been associated with higher chances for both clinical pregnancy and live birth among women undergoing assisted reproductive techniques, whereas low levels of maternal vitamin D have been associated with preeclampsia and late miscarriage. In Denmark, subgroups at risk for low vitamin D levels, including neonates and toddlers, are recommended to use supplementation. The aim was to study the level of vitamin D3 among neonates born after in vitro fertilization compared with neonates from the general population. MATERIAL AND METHODS In this cohort study a random sample of 1326 neonates representing the general population and 1200 neonates conceived by in vitro fertilization born in Denmark from 1995 to 2002 were identified from registries covering the whole Danish population. Information on use of assisted reproduction was collected from the Danish In Vitro Fertilization register, ICD-10 code: DZ358F. 25-Hydroxyvitamin D was measured from dried blood spots routinely collected by heel prick 48-72 h after birth and corrected according to the hematocrit fraction for capillary blood of neonates. Linear regression analysis was performed, both crude and adjusted, for predefined putative confounders, identified through directed acyclic graphs. RESULTS Vitamin D3 analysis could be performed from a total of 1105 neonates from the general population and 1072 neonates conceived by in vitro fertilization that were subsequently included in the study. The median vitamin D3 was 24.0 nmol/L (interquartile range [IQR] 14.1-39.3) and 33.0 nmol/L (IQR 21.3-48.8) among neonates from the general population and neonates conceived by in vitro fertilization, respectively. The adjusted mean difference between neonates from the general population and those conceived by in vitro fertilization was 6.1 nmol/L (95% confidence interval 4.1-8.1). CONCLUSIONS In this study, children born after in vitro fertilization have a higher vitamin D3 than a random sample of neonates in Denmark.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The relationship between vitamin D and prostate cancer has primarily been characterized among White men. However, Black men have higher prostate cancer incidence and mortality rates, chronically low circulating vitamin D levels, and ancestry-specific genetic variants in vitamin D-related genes. Here, we examine six critical genes in the vitamin D pathway and prostate cancer risk in Black men. METHODS We assessed a total of 69 candidate variants in six genes ( GC, CYP27A1, CYP27B1, CYP24A1, VDR , and RXRA ) including functional variants previously associated with prostate cancer and circulating 25(OHD) in White men. Associations with prostate cancer risk were examined using genome-wide association study data for approximately 10,000 prostate cancer cases and 10,000 controls among Black men and over 85,000 cases and 91,000 controls among White men. A statistical significance threshold of 0.000724 was used to account for the 69 variants tested. RESULTS None of the variants examined were significantly associated with prostate cancer risk among Black men after multiple comparison adjustment. Four variants tested P<0.05 in Black men, including two in RXRA (rs41400444 OR=1.09, 95% CI: 1.01-1.17, P = 0.024 and rs10881574 OR = 0.93, 0.87-1.00, P = 0.046) and two in VDR (rs2853563 OR = 1.07, 1.01-1.13, P = 0.017 and rs1156882 OR = 1.06, 1.00-1.12, P = 0.045). Two variants in VDR were also positively associated with risk in White men (rs11568820 OR = 1.04, 1.02-1.06, P = 0.00024 and rs4516035 OR = 1.03, 1.01-1.04, P = 0.00055). CONCLUSION We observed suggestive non-significant associations between genetic variants in RXRA and VDR and prostate cancer risk in Black men. Future research exploring the relationship of vitamin D with cancer risk in Black men will need larger sample sizes to identify ancestry-specific variants relevant to risk in this population.

Randomized controlled trial of enteral vitamin D supplementation (ViDES) in infants <28 weeks gestational age or <1000 g birth weight: study protocol. Trials 2024; 25:423. Abstract
BACKGROUND Vitamin D is necessary to develop healthy lungs and other organs early in life. Most infants born before 28 weeks' gestation have low vitamin D levels at birth and a limited intake during the first month. Enteral vitamin D supplementation is inexpensive and widely used. The appropriate supplementation regimen for extremely preterm infants is controversial, and the effect of different regimens on their blood levels and outcomes is unclear. METHODS Randomized, blinded comparative effectiveness trial to compare two vitamin D supplementation regimens for inborn infants <28 weeks gestation or <1000 g birth weight at a large academic center in the United States. Infants are stratified by birth weight and randomized within 96 h after birth to either routine supplementation (400 IU/day with established feedings) or increased supplementation (800 IU/day with any feedings) during the first 28 days after birth. We hypothesize that the higher and early vitamin D dose (800 IU/day with early feeding) compared to placebo plus routine dose (400 IU/day with established feeding) will substantially increase total 25-hydroxyvitamin D3 levels measured as state-of-art at 1 month, reduce respiratory support at 36 weeks' postmenstrual age (on an ordinal scale predictive of later adverse outcomes), and improve or at least not worsen other important secondary outcomes. The infants in the study will follow up at 22-26 months' corrected age (~2 years) with blinded certified examiners to evaluate neurodevelopmental outcomes. The sample size of a minimum of 180 infants provides >90% power to detect a >95% posterior probability of a 33% increase in serum 25-hydroxy vitamin D3 and >80% power to detect a >80% posterior probability of a relative risk decrease of 20% of reducing respiratory support by intention-to-treat Bayesian analyses using a neutral prior probability. DISCUSSION Our study will help clarify the uncertain relationship of vitamin D supplementation and its associated serum metabolites to clinical outcomes of extremely preterm infants. Confirmation of our hypotheses would prompt reconsideration of the supplementation regimens used in extremely preterm infants and justify a large multicenter study to verify the generalizability of the results. Abstract
Background Iron deficiency is known to impair muscle function and reduce athletic performance, while vitamin D has been reported to induce iron deficiency. However, the mechanism underlying exercise-induced changes in iron metabolism and the involvement of vitamins in this mechanism are unclear. The present study examined changes in biological iron metabolism induced by continuous training and the effects of vitamin D on these changes. Methods Diet, physical characteristics, and blood test data were collected from 23 female high school students in a dance club on the last day of each of a 2-month continuous training period and a 2-week complete rest periods. Results Serum hepcidin-25 levels were significantly lower during the training period than the rest period (p = 0.013), as were the red blood cell count, hemoglobin, and hematocrit (all p < 0.001). Serum erythropoietin was significantly higher (p = 0.001) during the training period. Significant positive correlations were observed between 25(OH)D levels and serum iron, serum ferritin, and transferrin saturation during the training period. Multiple regression analysis with serum 25(OH)D level as the dependent variable and serum ferritin and iron levels as independent variables during the training period revealed a significant association with serum ferritin. Conclusion Continuous training may promote hemolysis and erythropoiesis, contributing to the suppression of hepcidin expression. The relationship between serum 25(OH)D and iron in vivo may be closely related to metabolic changes induced by the exercise load.

Abstract
Purpose Vitamin D deficiency (VDD, 25-hydroxyvitamin D < 20 ng/mL) has been reported associated with exacerbation of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) but sometimes controversial. Research on severe vitamin D deficiency (SVDD, 25-hydroxyvitamin D < 10 ng/mL) in exacerbation of COPD is limited. Patients and Methods We performed a retrospective observational study in 134 hospitalized exacerbated COPD patients. 25-hydroxyvitamin D was modeled as a continuous or dichotomized (cutoff value: 10 or 20 ng/mL) variable to evaluate the association of SVDD with hospitalization in the previous year. Receiver operator characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed to find the optimal cut-off value of 25-hydroxyvitamin D. Results In total 23% of the patients had SVDD. SVDD was more prevalent in women, and SVDD group tended to have lower blood eosinophils counts. 25-hydroxyvitamin D level was significantly lower in patients who were hospitalized in the previous year (13.6 vs 16.7 ng/mL, P = 0.044), and the prevalence of SVDD was higher (38.0% vs 14.3%, P = 0.002). SVDD was independently associated with hospitalization in the previous year [odds ratio (OR) 4.34, 95% CI 1.61-11.72, P = 0.004] in hospitalized exacerbated COPD patients, whereas continuous 25-hydroxyvitamin D and VDD were not (P = 0.1, P = 0.9, separately). The ROC curve yielded an area under the curve of 0.60 (95% CI 0.50-0.71) with an optimal 25-hydroxyvitamin D cutoff of 10.4 ng/mL. Conclusion SVDD probably showed a more stable association with hospitalization in the previous year in hospitalized exacerbated COPD patients. Reasons for lower eosinophil counts in SVDD group needed further exploration.

Abstract
Fat-soluble vitamins, including vitamins A, D, E, and K, are energy-free molecules that are essential to the body's functioning and life. Their intake is almost exclusively exogenous, i.e., dietary. As a result, fat-soluble vitamin deficiencies are rarer in industrialized countries than in countries with limited resources. Certain groups of people are particularly affected, such as newborns or growing children, pregnant or breastfeeding women, and elderly or isolated individuals. Deficiencies in vitamins A, D, E, and K are also relatively frequent in subjects with digestive tract disorders, liver diseases, chronic pathologies, or in intensive care patients. Deficiencies or excesses of fat-soluble vitamins are responsible for a variety of more or less specific clinical pictures. Certain syndromes are typical of fat-soluble vitamin deficiency, such as the combination of ophthalmological and immunity impairments in the case of vitamin A deficiency or hemorrhagic syndrome and osteopenia in the case of vitamin E deficiency. This is also the case for osteomalacia, muscular weakness, even falls, and rickets in the case of vitamin D deficiency. Diagnosis of a deficiency in one of the fat-soluble vitamins relies on blood tests, which are not always essential for routine use. In this context, a therapeutic test may be proposed. Treatment of deficiencies requires vitamin supplementation, a well-balanced diet, and treatment of the cause.

Abstract
The relationship between sunlight and allergies in children has received limited attention from researchers. We sought to explore how early exposure to solar radiation is associated with allergic morbidity within the PARIS birth cohort study. Our research dealt with children who attended at least one of two health checkups: at 18 months (n = 2012) and at 8-9 years (n = 1080). Early exposure to solar radiation was assessed using meteorological data (e.g., solar radiation, temperature, and relative humidity). Children with similar meteorological exposure trajectories were grouped by a longitudinal and multidimensional cluster analysis. The association between solar radiation exposure and allergic morbidity (i.e., allergic sensitization at 18 months and 8-9 years; current asthma, rhinitis, and eczema at 8-9 years) was quantified by multivariable logistic regression models adjusted for potential confounders. The effect modification of maternal vitamin D supplementation during pregnancy was tested. Four meteorological exposure trajectories were found. The trajectory with the highest exposure to early solar radiation had a reduced risk of sensitization at 8-9 years compared to the trajectory with the lowest exposure (p = 0.06). The association was statistically significant in the vitamin D supplementation group. Solar radiation during prenatal and postnatal periods was significantly associated with a lower risk of sensitization at 8-9 years (for one interquartile range (IQR) increase, adjusted odds ratio (aOR): 0.47; 95 % confidence interval (CI): 0.25-0.87 and 0.84; 0.7-1.00, respectively). Increased prenatal exposure to solar radiation was significantly associated with a lower risk of asthma at 8-9 years (for one IQR increase, aOR: 0.32; 95 % CI: 0.1-0.96). Early sunlight exposure may reduce the risk of sensitization and asthma in school-aged children, especially in those prenatally exposed to vitamin D. These findings highlight the importance of vitamin D in preventing allergic diseases in children, either through supplementation or sunlight exposure.

Abstract
A 42-days study was conducted to evaluate the effects of different dietary types (corn-or wheat-soybean meal-based diet) and phytase (Phy) or a multi-carbohydrase and phytase complex (MCPC) supplementation on growth performance, digestibility of phosphorus (P), intestinal transporter gene expression, plasma indexes, bone parameters, and fecal microbiota in growing pigs. Seventy-two barrows (average initial body weight of 24.70 ± 0.09 kg) with a 2 × 3 factorial arrangement of treatments and main effects of diet type (corn-or wheat-soybean meal-based-diets) and enzyme supplementation (without, with Phy or with MCPC). Each group was designed with 6 replicate pens. The MCPC increased (p < 0.05) average daily gain (ADG) and final body weight (BW). A significant interaction (p = 0.01) was observed between diet type and enzyme supplementation on apparent total tract digestibility (ATTD) of P. The ATTD of P was higher (p < 0.05) in wheat soybean meal-based diets compared to corn-soybean meal-based diets. Compared with the corn-soybean meal-based diet, the relative expression of SLC34A2 and VDR genes in the ileum and SLC34A3 in jejunum of growing pigs fed the wheat-soybean meal based diet was lower (p < 0.05). The MCPC significantly reduced (p < 0.05) the relative expression of TRPV5 and CALB1 genes in the ileum and increased the expression of CALB1 in the duodenum compared to control diet. The phytase increased (p < 0.05) the relative expression of SLC34A1 gene in the duodenum in comparison to control diet and MCPC-supplemented diet. The Ca and P contents in plasma from pigs fed corn-soybean meal-based diet were higher (p < 0.05) than those from pigs fed wheat-soybean meal-based diet, and the parathyroid hormone (PTH) and calcitonin (CT) concentrations were lower (p < 0.05) than those fed wheat-soybean meal-based diet. The content of Ca and P in the femur and the bone strength of pigs in the corn-soybean meal group were significantly higher (p < 0.05) than those in the wheat-soybean meal groups. The phytase increased (p < 0.05) the Ca and P content and bone strength of the femur. Additionally, diet type and both enzymes significantly improved fecal microbial diversity and composition. Taken together, diet type and exogenous enzymes supplementation could differently influence the growth performance, utilization of phosphorus, intestinal transporter gene expression, bone mineralization and microbial diversity and composition in growing pigs.

Food supplements are defined as foodstuffs the purpose of which is to supplement the normal diet and which are concentrated sources of nutrients or other substances with a nutritional or physiological effect, often referred to as nutraceuticals, may exert benefit to the human body. Their use is increasing worldwide, including Europe and in Italy. However, some doctors are skeptical about their effectiveness and safety. This reluctance may depend on poor knowledge of the mechanisms of action and clinical evidence in literature. The Italian Society of Pediatric Allergy and Immunology (SIAIP) promoted the institution of an ad hoc Committee. The first initiative performed by this Committee was the administration of a questionnaire to the members of SIAIP.The results of this survey provided interesting results. Most pediatricians know the food supplement concept but frequently need help understanding the mechanisms of action. Most prescribe food supplements, mainly for preventing infections or enhancing immune defense. In addition, they prefer to use food supplements as cycles or add-on therapy. Finally, most participants like to attend events on this issue and contribute to new evidence through trials.In conclusion, this survey underscores the relevance of food supplement issues and attests to interest in this topic. However, there is a need to provide information and promote studies on this matter.

Abstract
The ChAdOx1 nCoV-19 (COVISHIELD) vaccine has emerged as a pivotal tool in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. In our previous study eligible subjects were supplemented with calcifediol, a direct precursor to the biologically active form of vitamin D, calcitriol with an objective to enhance the immunogenicity of the COVISHIELD vaccine. Herein we investigated the effects of calcifediol supplementation on gene expression profiles in individuals who received the COVISHIELD vaccine. Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from vaccinated individuals with and without calcifediol supplementation at baseline, 3rd and 6th month, and the gene expression profiles were analyzed using high-throughput sequencing. The results revealed distinct patterns of gene expression associated with calcifediol supplementation, suggesting potential molecular mechanisms underlying the beneficial effects of calcifediol in improving the efficacy of COVISHIELD vaccine via augmentation of T cell activation, proliferation and T cell memory responses. Additionally, there was upregulation of NOD like receptor, JAK/STAT and TGF beta signaling pathways. Calcifediol supplementation in vaccinated individuals also downregulated the pathways related to the Coronavirus disease. Taken together, our findings provide valuable insights into the interplay between vitamin D receptor (VDR) signaling and vaccine-induced immune responses and offer another approach in improving vaccination induced antiviral responses.

Abstract
Carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) is the most common cause of peripheral compressive neuropathy and consists of compression of the median nerve in the wrist. Although there are several etiologies, idiopathic is the most prevalent origin, and among the forms of treatment for CTS, conservative is the most indicated. However, despite the high prevalence in and impact of this syndrome on the healthcare system, there are still controversies regarding the best therapeutic approach for patients. Therefore, noting that some studies point to vitamin D deficiency as an independent risk factor, which increases the symptoms of the syndrome, this study evaluated the role of vitamin D supplementation and its influence on pain control, physical examination and response electroneuromyography to conservative treatment of carpal tunnel syndrome. For this, the sample consisted of 14 patients diagnosed with CTS and hypovitaminosis D, who were allocated into two groups. The control group received corticosteroid treatment, while the experimental group received corticosteroid treatment associated with vitamin D. Thus, from this study, it can be concluded that patients who received vitamin D, when compared to those who did not receive it, showed improvement in the degree of pain intensity, a reduction in symptom severity and an improvement in some electroneuromyographic parameters.

Abstract
Objective This study aimed to investigate the association between serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) concentrations and mortality in long-term prescription opioid users. Methods The study included 1856 long-term prescription opioid users from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES, 2001-2018). Mortality status were determined by matching with the National Death Index (NDI) records until December 31, 2019. Multivariable Cox proportional hazard models were constructed to assess the association. Results Over a median follow-up period of 7.75 years, there were 443 cases of all-cause mortality, including 135 cardiovascular disease (CVD) deaths and 94 cancer deaths. After multivariable adjustment, participants with serum 25(OH)D concentrations within 50.00 to <75.00 nmol/L and ≥ 75 nmol/L had a lower risk of all-cause mortality, with hazard ratios (HRs) of 0.50 (95% confidence interval [CI] 0.29, 0.86) and 0.54 (95% CI 0.32, 0.90), respectively. Nevertheless, no significant association was found between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and the risk of CVD or cancer mortality. The RCS analysis revealed a non-linear association of serum 25(OH)D concentration with all-cause mortality (p for non-linear = 0.01). Per 1-unit increment in those with serum 25(OH)D concentrations <62.17 nmol/L corresponded to a 2% reduction in the risk of all-cause mortality (95% CI 0.97, 1.00), but not changed significantly when 25(OH)D concentrations ≥62.17 nmol/L. Conclusion In conclusion, a non-linear association existed between serum 25(OH)D concentrations and all-cause mortality in long-term prescription opioid users. Maintaining serum 25(OH)D concentrations ≥62.17 nmol/L may be beneficial in preventing all-cause mortality in this population.

Abstract
The human cathelicidin LL-37 shows activity against microorganisms, but it is also cytotoxic to host cells. The CAMP gene codes for the LL-37 precursor hCAP18 which is processed extracellularly to active LL-37. It has previously been shown that vitamin D stimulates CAMP gene activity, but less information is available demonstrating that vitamin D also can increase hCAP18/LL-37 protein production. Here, we show with RT-qPCR that a physiological concentration of vitamin D (50 nM) enhances CAMP mRNA levels by about 170 times in human THP-1 monocyte cells. Stimulation with 50 nM vitamin D increases hCAP18/LL-37 protein contents 3-4 times in THP-1 cell lysates demonstrated by both dot blot analysis and ELISA applying two different hCAP18/LL-37 antibodies. Treatment with the proteasome inhibitor MG132 enhances hCAP18/LL-37 levels, suggesting that turnover of hCAP18/LL-37 protein is regulated by the proteasome. The hCAP18/LL-37 concentration in vitamin D-stimulated THP-1 cells corresponds to 1.04 μM LL-37. Interestingly, synthetic LL-37, at this concentration, reduces viability of human osteoblast-like MG63 cells, whereas the THP-1 cells are less sensitive as demonstrated by the MTT assay. In summary, we show that vitamin D enhances hCAP18/LL-37 production, and that this effect can be of physiological/pathophysiological relevance for LL-37-induced human osteoblast toxicity.

Abstract
Melanoma, originating through malignant transformation of melanin-producing melanocytes, is a formidable malignancy, characterized by local invasiveness, recurrence, early metastasis, resistance to therapy, and a high mortality rate. This review discusses etiologic and risk factors for melanoma, diagnostic and prognostic tools, including recent advances in molecular biology, omics, and bioinformatics, and provides an overview of its therapy. Since the incidence of melanoma is rising and mortality remains unacceptably high, we discuss its inherent properties, including melanogenesis, that make this disease resilient to treatment and propose to use AI to solve the above complex and multidimensional problems. We provide an overview on vitamin D and its anticancerogenic properties, and report recent advances in this field that can provide solutions for the prevention and/or therapy of melanoma. Experimental papers and clinicopathological studies on the role of vitamin D status and signaling pathways initiated by its active metabolites in melanoma prognosis and therapy are reviewed. We conclude that vitamin D signaling, defined by specific nuclear receptors and selective activation by specific vitamin D hydroxyderivatives, can provide a benefit for new or existing therapeutic approaches. We propose to target vitamin D signaling with the use of computational biology and AI tools to provide a solution to the melanoma problem.

Abstract
Vitamin D is a group of seco-steroidal fat-soluble compounds. The two basic forms, vitamin D2 (ergocalciferol) and vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), do not have biological activity. They are converted in the body by a two-step enzymatic hydroxylation into biologically active forms, 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D2 [ercalcitriol, 1,25(OH)2D2] and 1α,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3 [calcitriol, 1,25(OH)2D3], which act as classical steroid hormones. 1,25(OH)2D3 exerts most of its physiological functions by binding to the nuclear vitamin D receptor (VDR), which is present in most body tissues to provide support to a broad range of physiological processes. Vitamin D-liganded VDR controls the expression of many genes. High levels of 1,25(OH)2D3 cause an increase in calcium in the blood, which can lead to harmful hypercalcemia. Several analogs of 1,25(OH)2D3 and 1,25(OH)2D2 have been designed and synthesized with the aim of developing compounds that have a specific therapeutic function, for example, with potent anticancer activity and a reduced toxic calcemic effect. Particular structural modifications to vitamin D analogs have led to increased anticancer activity and reduced calcemic action with the prospect of extending work to provide future innovative therapies.

Abstract
Functional constituents are the main concern in food production and consumption. Because foods rich in functional constituents have antioxidant capacity and are important in keeping consumers healthy. Pleurotus ostreatus is among foods rich in functional constituents. However, its functional constituents are affected by various factors. This study compared the antioxidant capacity of P. ostreatus grown on different substrates: straws of tef (Trt1), barley (Trt2), and wheat (Trt3), husks of faba bean (Trt4), and field pea (Trt5), sawdust (Trt6), and the mixture of the above with 1:1 w/w (Trt7). Trt7 had significantly higher radical scavenging activity (RSA) (73.27%), vitamin C (10.61 mg/100 g), and vitamin D (4.92 mg/100 g) compared to other treatments. Whereas the lowest values of RSA (44.24%), vitamin C (5.39 mg/100 g), and vitamin D (1.21 mg/100 g) were found in Trt2. The results indicated that mixed substrate may be a good growth substrate for functionally beneficial P. ostreatus and could be a promising source of natural antioxidants.

Abstract
Organophosphate esters (OPEs) and phthalate acid esters (PAEs) are prevalent endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs). Humans are often exposed to OPEs and PAEs simultaneously through multiple routes. Given that fetal stage is a critical period for neurodevelopment, it is necessary to know whether gestational co-exposure to OPEs and PAEs affects fetal neurodevelopment. However, accessible epidemiological studies are limited. The present study included 2, 120 pregnant women from the Ma'anshan Birth Cohort (MABC) study. The concentrations of tris (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), 6 OPE metabolites and 7 PAE metabolites were measured in the first, second and third trimester using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Cognitive development of preschooler was assessed based on the Wechsler Preschool and Primary Scale of Intelligence-Fourth Edition (WPPSI-IV) of the Chinese version. Generalized estimating equations (GEEs), restricted cubic spline (RCS) and generalized additive models (GAMs) were employed to explore the associations between individual OPE exposure and preschooler cognitive development. The quantile-based g-computation (QGC) method was used to estimate the joint effect of PAEs and OPEs exposure on cognitive development. GEEs revealed significant adverse associations between diphenyl phosphate (DPHP) (β: -0.58, 95% CI: -1.14, -0.01), bis (2-butoxyethyl) phosphate(BBOEP) (β: -0.44, 95% CI: -0.85, -0.02), bis(1-chloro-2-propyl) phosphate (BCIPP) (β: -0.81, 95%CI: -1.43, -0.20) and full-scale intelligence quotient (FSIQ) in the first trimester; additionally, TCEP and bis(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (BEHP) in the second trimester, as well as DPHP in the third trimester, were negatively associated with cognitive development. Through the QGC analyses, mixture exposure in the first trimester was negatively associated with FSIQ scores (β: -1.70, 95% CI: -3.06, -0.34), mono-butyl phthalate (MBP), BCIPP, and DPHP might be the dominant contributors after controlling for other OPEs and PAEs congeners. Additionally, the effect of OPEs and PAEs mixture on cognitive development might be driven by vitamin D deficiency.

Abstract
Introduction: An aberrant immune response involving yet unidentified environmental and genetic factors plays a crucial role in triggering Kawasaki disease (KD). Aims: The aim of this study was to assess general and laboratory data at the onset of KD in a single-center cohort of children managed between 2003 and 2023 and retrospectively evaluate any potential relationship with the development of KD-related cardiovascular abnormalities (CVAs). Patients and methods: We took into account a total of 65 consecutive children with KD (42 males, median age: 22 months, age range: 2-88 months) followed at the Department of Life Sciences and Public Health in our University; demographic data, clinical signs, and laboratory variables at disease onset, before IVIG infusion, including C-reactive protein, hemoglobin, white blood cell (WBC) count, neutrophil count, platelet count, aminotransferases, natremia, albumin, total bilirubin, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D were evaluated. Results: Twenty-one children (32.3% of the whole cohort) were found to have echocardiographic evidence of CVAs. Univariate analysis showed that diagnosis of KD at <1 year or >5 years was associated with CVAs (p = 0.001 and p = 0.01, respectively); patients with CVAs had a longer fever duration and mostly presented atypical or incomplete presentations. Interestingly, all patients with CVAs had lower levels of vitamin D (less than 30 mg/dL, p = 0.0001) and both higher WBC and higher neutrophil counts than those without CVAs (p = 0.0001 and p = 0.01, respectively). Moreover, blood levels of albumin were significantly lower in KD patients with CVAs compared to those without (11/21, 52% versus 13/44, 30%, p = 0.02). Multiple logistic regression with correction for sex showed that serum vitamin D < 30 ng/mL, WBC count > 20.000/mm3, and age > 60 months at KD onset were the only independent factors statistically associated with CVAs. Conclusions: Hypovitaminosis D, WBC count over 20.000/mm3, and age above 5 years at KD onset emerged as independent factors statistically associated with the occurrence of CVAs.

Abstract
AIM Surgery had a significant impact on 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25-(OH)D) levels. Uncertainty still existed regarding the effects of peri-operative 25(OH)D deficiency on colorectal cancer (CRC) patients' prognosis. The purpose of the present study was to explore the potential association between the peri-operative 25(OH)D deficiency and the survival outcome of CRC. METHODS Seven electronic databases [including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, The Cochrane Library, OvidMEDLINE(R), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) and Wangfang data] were searched without language limitations. The primary outcomes were overall survival and all-cause mortality. Secondary outcomes were the incidence of 25(OH)D deficiency and risk variables for low 25(OH)D level in the peri-operative period. RESULTS 14 eligible studies were obtained with 9324 patients for meta-analysis. In the peri-operative period, the pooled incidence of blood 25(OH)D deficiency was 59.61% (95% CI: 45.74-73.48). The incidence of blood 25(OH)D deficiency post-operatively (66.60%) was higher than that pre-operatively (52.65%, 95% CI: 32.94-72.36). Male (RR = 1.09, 95% CI: 1.03-1.16), rectum tumor (RR = 1.23, 95% CI: 1.03-1.47), spring and winter sampling (RR = 1.24, 95% CI: 1.02-1.49) were the risk factors for the 25(OH)D deficiency. The association between the low 25(OH)D post-operatively and short-term overall survival (HR = 0.43, 95% CI: 0.24-0.77) was most prominent, while a low 25(OH)D pre-operatively (HR = 0.47, 95% CI: 0.31-0.70) was more significantly associated with long-term all-cause mortality than that after surgery. CONCLUSION Peri-operative 25(OH)D impacted the CRC patients' prognosis. Due to possible confounding effects of systemic inflammatory response (SIR), simultaneous measurement of vitamin D and SIR is essential for colorectal survival.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anaemia and vitamin D insufficiency (VDI) are among the most common nutritional problems. Anaemia screening is routinely performed; however, screening for VDI is not usually recommended. OBJECTIVES To study the association between anaemia and VDI and identify the risk factors for VDI. METHODS We conducted a cross-sectional study of 120 infants aged 6-12 months attending a well-child clinic at Songklanagarind Hospital between December 2020 and November 2021. Sociodemographic data and 24-h food records were also collected. Blood samples were obtained for complete blood count and 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels. Logistic regression analysis was used to determine risk factors for VDI. RESULTS The mean 25(OH)D level was 22.2 ± 8.9 ng/mL in anaemic infants and 27.2 ± 9.6 ng/mL in non-anaemic infants (P value 0.01). The median (IQR) Hb level was 11.1 g/dL (10.3, 11.4) in the VDI group and 11.4 g/dL (11, 12.1) in the non-VDI group (P value 0.002). The proportion of breastfed infants was higher in infants with anaemia (80%) (P < 0.001) and VDI (85.3%) (P < 0.001). Sunlight exposure <15 min/day (odds ratio [OR] 3.84; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.23-12.00; P = 0.020) was a risk factor, and vitamin D intake (OR 0.37; 95% CI: 0.20-0.74; P = 0.004) was a protective factor for VDI. CONCLUSION Infants with anaemia, short duration of sunlight exposure, breastfeeding, low vitamin D intake, and low iron intake were more likely to be vitamin D insufficient. However, after adjustment in the multivariate analyses, only sunlight exposure and vitamin D intake were significantly associated with vitamin D insufficiency.

Abstract
Evidence for adaptation of human skin color to regional ultraviolet radiation suggests shared and distinct genetic variants across populations. However, skin color evolution and genetics in East Asians are understudied. We quantified skin color in 48,433 East Asians using image analysis and identified associated genetic variants and potential causal genes for skin color as well as their polygenic interplay with sun exposure. This genome-wide association study (GWAS) identified 12 known and 11 previously unreported loci and SNP-based heritability was 23-24%. Potential causal genes were determined through the identification of nonsynonymous variants, colocalization with gene expression in skin tissues, and expression levels in melanocytes. Genomic loci associated with pigmentation in East Asians substantially diverged from European populations, and we detected signatures of polygenic adaptation. This large GWAS for objectively quantified skin color in an East Asian population improves understanding of the genetic architecture and polygenic adaptation of skin color and prioritizes potential causal genes.

Abstract
Osteoporosis is a common disorder with a strong genetic component. Bone mineral density (BMD), vitamin D, and calcium levels declining are a main contributor of osteoporosis and fragility fractures. This cross-sectional study designed to explore the possible link between CYP2R1 rs10741657 polymorphism and BMD of the total hip, lumbar spine and femoral neck, vitamin D, and calcium in Iranian children and adolescents. 247 children and adolescents (127 girls and 120 boys) between 9 and 18 years old from Kawar (an urban area located 50 km east of Shiraz, the capital city of the Fars province in the south of Iran) were randomly selected based on age-stratified systematic sampling and recruited for genetic analysis. The polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) method was used for genotyping CYP2R1 rs10741657. Anthropometric, biochemical, and bone mineral density (BMD) parameters were also measured. The results specified that in the dominant [P < 0.0001, - 2.943 (- 4.357-1.529)] and over-dominant [P < 0.0001, 2.789 (1.369-4.209)] models, vitamin D concentration significantly differed between genotypes. The highest vitamin D levels were displayed for participants carrying the rs10741657 AG genotype (16.47 ng/ml). In regard to calcium, in a dominant model [P = 0.012, 0.194 (0.043-0.345)] and over-dominant model [P = 0.008, 0.206 (- 0.357-0.055), there was a significant association. AG genotype displayed the highest (9.96 mg/dl) and GG genotype the lowest (9.75 mg/dl) calcium values. This study reported the association of CYP2R1 rs10741657 polymorphisms with calcium and vitamin D levels in Iranian children and adolescents.

Abstract
Young women have increased risk of vitamin D deficiency, which may increase breast cancer incidence. Here, we assessed the anti-cancer efficacy of vitamin D in mouse models of young-onset breast cancer. In never-pregnant mice, vitamin D supplementation increased serum 25(OH)D and hepatic 1,25(OH)2D3, reduced tumor size, and associated with anti-tumor immunity. These anti-tumor effects were not replicated in a mouse model of postpartum breast cancer, where hepatic metabolism of vitamin D was suppressed post-wean, which resulted in deficient serum 25(OH)D and reduced hepatic 1,25(OH)2D3. Treatment with active 1,25(OH)2D3 induced hypercalcemia exclusively in post-wean mice, highlighting metabolic imbalance post-wean. RNAseq revealed suppressed CYP450 expression postpartum. In sum, we provide evidence that vitamin D anti-tumor activity is mediated through immunomodulatory mechanisms and is ineffective in the post-wean window due to altered hepatic metabolism. These findings have implications for suppressed xenobiotic metabolism in postpartum women beyond vitamin D.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To determine the correlation between initial serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels with granulation growth in diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) after 21 days of treatment. METHOD This cohort study involved patients with type 2 diabetes who had a DFU treated at hospital. Blood samples were taken from patients on admission. The chemiluminescent immunoassay technique was used to measure 25(OH)D levels. Granulation tissue growth was analysed by comparing the photographs from the initial treatment to day 21 of treatment. RESULTS The median value of 25(OH)D levels at initial treatment was 8 ng/ml. The result showed no correlation between 25(OH)D levels and the granulation growth in DFUs (p=0.86). CONCLUSION The initial serum 25(OH)D level was not correlated with the growth of granulation tissue in DFUs.
