Copper@ZIF-8 Core-Shell Nanowires for Reusable Antimicrobial Face Masks

ZIF-8-modified hydrogel sequentially delivers angiogenic and osteogenic growth factors to accelerate vascularized bone regeneration

To realize high-quality vascularized bone regeneration, we developed a multifunctional hydrogel (SHPP-ZB) by incorporating BMP-2@ZIF-8/PEG-NH2 nanoparticles (NPs) into a sodium alginate/hydroxyapatite/polyvinyl alcohol hydrogel loaded with PDGF-BB, allowing for the sequential release of angiogenic and osteogenic growth factors (GFs) during bone repair. ZIF-8 served as a protective host for BMP-2 from degradation, ensuring high encapsulation efficiency and long-term bioactivity. The SHPP-ZB hydrogel exhibited enhanced mechanical strength and injectability, making it suitable for complex bone defects. It provided a swelling interface for tissue interlocking and the early release of Zn2+ and tannin acid (TA) to exert antioxidant and antibacterial effects, followed by the sequential release of angiogenic and osteogenic GFs to promote high-quality vascularized bone regeneration. In vitro experiments demonstrated the superior angiogenic and osteogenic properties of SHPP-ZB compared to other groups. In vivo experiments indicated that the sequential delivery of GFs via SHPP-ZB hydrogel could improve vascularized bone regeneration. Further, RNA sequencing analysis of regenerative bone tissue revealed that SHPP-ZB hydrogel promoted vascularized bone regeneration by regulating JUN, MAPK, Wnt, and calcium signaling pathways in vivo. This study presented a promising approach for efficient vascularized bone regeneration in large-scale bone defects.

Antimicrobial activity of metal-based nanoparticles: a mini-review

The resistance of pathogenic microorganisms to antibiotics is one of the main problems of world health. Of particular concern are multidrug-resistant (MDR) bacteria. Infections caused by these microorganisms affect the appearance of acute or chronic diseases. In this regard, modern technologies, such as nanomaterials (NMs), especially promising nanoparticles (NPs), can possess antimicrobial properties or improve the effectiveness and delivery of known antibiotics. Their diversity and characteristics, combined with surface functionalization, enable multivalent interactions with microbial biomolecules. This article presents an overview of the most current research on replacing antibiotics with NPs, including the prospects and risks involved.

Unlocking the potential of stimuli-responsive biomaterials for bone regeneration

Bone defects caused by tumors, osteoarthritis, and osteoporosis attract great attention. Because of outstanding biocompatibility, osteogenesis promotion, and less secondary infection incidence ratio, stimuli-responsive biomaterials are increasingly used to manage this issue. These biomaterials respond to certain stimuli, changing their mechanical properties, shape, or drug release rate accordingly. Thereafter, the activated materials exert instructive or triggering effects on cells and tissues, match the properties of the original bone tissues, establish tight connection with ambient hard tissue, and provide suitable mechanical strength. In this review, basic definitions of different categories of stimuli-responsive biomaterials are presented. Moreover, possible mechanisms, advanced studies, and pros and cons of each classification are discussed and analyzed. This review aims to provide an outlook on the future developments in stimuli-responsive biomaterials.

A multifunctional chitosan based porous membrane for pH-responsive antibacterial activity and promotion of infected wound healing

Unsatisfactory mechanical and antibacterial properties restricted the solo use of chitosan (CS) as a wound dressing. In this work, a novel CS/hydroxyapatite/ZIF-8 (CS/HAp/ZIF-8, CHZ-10) porous membrane was facilely constructed by in situ loading of ZIF-8 on CS/HAp. The advantages of the three compositions were rationally integrated, and the multifunctionality and practicality of this CS-based dressing were improved. HAp not only improved the mechanical strength and stability of CS, but also promoted cell proliferation and accelerated hemostasis with its released Ca2+. Meanwhile, ZIF-8 enhanced the antibacterial activity of CS by releasing antibacterial Zn2+ in a pH-responsive and sustainable manner, avoiding the bio-accumulation toxicity of heavy metals. Compared with CS/HAp and conventionally used gauze, CHZ-10 exhibited superior coagulation and hemolytic ability, as well as outstanding antibacterial activity against E. coli and S. aureus. Besides, both in vivo observation and histological evaluation demonstrated that CHZ-10 could not only effectively inhibit bacterial infection and reduce inflammation of the wound, but also promote its re-epithelialization, granulation, tissue formation and collagen fibre growth, leading to effectively enhanced wound-healing. This work provides a new method for the easy construction of multifunctional antibacterial dressings based on CS, showing promise for application in clinical wound care.

Highly Permeable and Regenerative Microhoneycomb Filters

Allergic reactions can profoundly influence the quality of life. To address the health risks posed by allergens and overcome the permeability limitations of the current filter materials, this work introduces a novel microhoneycomb (MH) material for practical filter applications such as masks. Through a synthesis process integrating ice-templating and a gas-phase post-treatment with silane, MH achieves unprecedented levels of moisture resistance and mechanical stability while preserving the highly permeable microchannels. Notably, MH is extremely elastic, with a 92% recovery rate after being compressed to 80% deformation. The filtration efficiency surpasses 98.1% against pollutant particles that simulate airborne pollens, outperforming commercial counterparts with fifth-fold greater air permeability while ensuring unparalleled user comfort. Moreover, MH offers a sustainable solution, being easily regenerated through back-flow blowing, distinguishing it from conventional nonwoven fabrics. Finally, a prototype mask incorporating MH is presented, demonstrating its immense potential as a high-performance filtration material, effectively addressing health risks posed by allergens and other harmful particles.

Engineering surgical face masks with photothermal and photodynamic plasmonic nanostructures for enhancing filtration and on-demand pathogen eradication

The shortage of face masks and the lack of antipathogenic functions has been significant since the recent pandemic's inception. Moreover, the disposal of an enormous number of contaminated face masks not only carries a significant environmental impact but also escalates the risk of cross-contamination. This study proposes a strategy to upgrade available surgical masks into antibacterial masks with enhanced particle and bacterial filtration. Plasmonic nanoparticles can provide photodynamic and photothermal functionalities for surgical masks. For this purpose, gold nanorods act as on-demand agents to eliminate pathogens on the surface of the masks upon near-infrared light irradiation. Additionally, the modified masks are furnished with polymer electrospun nanofibrous layers. These electrospun layers can enhance the particle and bacterial filtration efficiency, not at the cost of the pressure drop of the mask. Consequently, fabricating these prototype masks could be a practical approach to upgrading the available masks to alleviate the environmental toll of disposable face masks.

Oxygen-carrying acid-responsive Cu/ZIF-8 for photodynamic antibacterial therapy against cariogenic Streptococcus mutans infection

Caries as a result of acid demineralization is the most common oral microbial infectious disease. Due to the small and complex intraoral operating space, it is challenging to completely remove Streptococcus mutans (S. mutans) and other cariogenic bacteria. As an intelligent acid-responsive photosensitive nanomaterial, O2-Cu/ZIF-8@Ce6/ZIF-8@HA (OCZCH) was chosen to adapt to the anaerobic and acidic microenvironment for inactivating S. mutans. In this work, OCZCH not only exhibits a regular nanomorphology in SEM and TEM images but also shows intelligent acid responsiveness as evidenced by the release of Ce6 and oxygen. When excited by near-infrared light at 650 nm, Ce6 releases reactive oxygen species (ROS) that act synergistically with internal oxygen to significantly enhance the antimicrobial therapeutic effect of photodynamic therapy (PDT). In vitro antimicrobial experiments showed that OCZCH could achieve an impressive sterilization effect against S. mutans and biofilm. Notably, the acid-producing ability of the bacteria was also significantly inhibited. With its oxygen-carrying photosensitizing properties, excellent responsiveness to acidic environments, and antimicrobial capacity under anaerobic conditions, OCZCH is considered an innovative candidate for clinical application in treating dental caries.

N-Halamine-Based Polypropylene Melt-Blown Nonwoven Fabric with Superhydrophilicity and Antibacterial Properties for Face Masks

Polypropylene melt-blown nonwoven fabric (PP MNF) masks can effectively block pathogens in the environment from entering the human body. However, the adhesion of surviving pathogens to masks poses a risk of human infection. Thus, embedding safe and efficient antibacterial materials is the key to solving pathogen infection. In this study, stable chlorinated poly(methacrylamide-N,N'-methylenebisacrylamide) polypropylene melt-blown nonwoven fabrics (PP-P(MAA-MBAA)-Cl MNFs) have been fabricated by a simple UV cross-link and chlorination process, and the active chlorine content can reach 3500 ppm. The PP-P(MAA-MBAA)-Cl MNFs show excellent hydrophilic and antibacterial properties. The PP-P(MAA-MBAA)-Cl MNFs could kill all bacteria (both Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) with only 5 min of contact. Therefore, incorporating PP-P(MAA-MBAA)-Cl MNF as a hydrophilic antimicrobial layer into a four-layer PP-based mask holds great potential for enhancing protection and comfort.

Meta-Aerogel Electric Trap Enables Instant and Continuable Pathogen Killing in Face Masks

The tremendous menace of the COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the urgency for antipathogen masks to stop the transmission of airborne infectious diseases. Most prevailing antipathogen masks manifest a slower sterilization rate that lags behind the pathogen momentum traversing the masks, thereby engendering an elevated susceptibility to infection. Here we tailor nanofibrous meta-aerogel electric traps, 3D-assembled from self-knotted carbon nanotube networks in an all rigid nanofibrous skeleton. This superior configuration revolves around the creation of numerous "dielectrophoretic-aerodynamic grippers", which are capable of directional manipulation of microbes toward the region of the lethal intensive electric field. Based on this, we present a disinfection unit comprising a pair of aerogel electrodes that demonstrate a rapid killing rate (>99.99% biocidal efficacy within 0.016 s) and long-term durability (12 h of continuous operation). Additionally, a microbutton lithium cell is employed as a power supply to fabricate an antipathogen face mask with this disinfection unit, which exhibits superior pathogen inactivation efficacy compared to commercial masks. This scalable biocidal protective equipment holds great potential for use in emergency medical services.

pH-Activated Scallop-Type Nanoenzymes for Oxidative Stress Amplification and Photothermal Enhancement of Antibacterial and Antibiofilm Effect

Ferric phosphate (FePOs) nanoenzymes can express peroxidase (POD) activity under the dual stimulation of an acidic environment and high H2O2 concentrations. In living organisms, this generates reactive oxygen species (ROS) in sites of lesion infection, and thus FePOs nanoenzymes can act as antimicrobial agents. Here, CeO2 and ZnO2 were immobilized in a scallop-type FePOs nanoenzyme material loaded with a photosensitizer, indocyanine green, to synthesize a multifunctional cascade nanoparticle system (FePOs-CeO2-ZnO2-ICG, FCZI NPs). H2O2 concentrations could be adjusted through the ZnO2 self-activation response to the slightly acidic environment in biofilms, further promoting the release of ROS from the POD-like reaction of FePOs, achieving amplification of oxidative stress, DNA and cell membrane damage, and exploiting the photodynamic/photothermal effects of indocyanine green to enhance the antibiofilm effects. CeO2 can remove redundant ROS by switching from Ce4+ to Ce3+ valence, enhancing its ability to fight chronic inflammation and oxidative stress and thus promoting the regeneration of tissues around infection. By maintaining the redox balance of normal cells, increasing ROS at the infection site, eliminating redundant ROS, and protecting normal tissues from damage, the synthesized system maximizes the elimination of biofilms and treatment at the infection site. Therefore, this work may pave the way for the application of biocompatible nanoenzymes.

Nanopatterned Electroactive Polylactic Acid Nanofibrous MOFilters for Efficient PM0.3 Filtration and Bacterial Inhibition

Biodegradable polylactic acid (PLA) nanofibrous membranes (NFMs) hold great potential to address the increasing airborne particulate matter (PM) and dramatic accumulation of plastic/microplastic pollution. However, the field of PLA NFM-based filters is still in its infancy, frequently dwarfed by the bottlenecks regarding relatively low surface activity, poor electroactivity, and insufficient PM capturing mechanisms. This effort discloses a microwave-assisted approach to minute-level synthesis of dielectric ZIF-8 nanocrystals with high specific surface area (over 1012 m2/g) and ultrasmall size (∼240 nm), which were intimately anchored onto PLA nanofibers (PLA@ZIF-8) by a combined "electrospinning-electrospray" strategy. This endowed the PLA@ZIF-8 NFMs with largely increased electroactivity in terms of elevated dielectric coefficient (an increase of 202%), surface potential (up to 5.8 kV), and triboelectric properties (output voltage of 30.8 V at 10 N, 0.5 Hz). Given the profound control over morphology and electroactivity, the PLA@ZIF-8 NFMs exhibited efficient filtration of PM0.3 (97.1%, 85 L/min) with a decreased air resistance (592.5 Pa), surpassing that of the pure PLA counterpart (88.4%, 650.9 Pa). This was essentially ascribed to realization of multiple filtration mechanisms for PLA@ZIF-8 NFMs, including enhanced physical interception, polar interactions, and electrostatic adsorption, and the unique self-charging function triggered by airflow vibrations. Moreover, perfect antibacterial performance was achieved for PLA@ZIF-8, showing ultrahigh inhibition rates of 99.9 and 100% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. The proposed hierarchical structuring strategy, offering the multifunction integration unattainable with conventional methods, may facilitate the development of biodegradable long-term air filters.

A Cu@ZIF-8 encapsulated antibacterial and angiogenic microneedle array for promoting wound healing

Skin wounds caused by external injuries remain a serious challenge in clinical practice. Wound dressings that are antibacterial, pro-angiogenic, and have potent regeneration capacities are highly desirable for wound healing. In this study, a minimally invasive and wound-friendly Cu@ZIF-8 encapsulated PEGDA/CMCS microneedle (MN) array was fabricated using the molding method to promote wound healing. The MNs had good biocompatibility, excellent mechanical strength, as well as strong antibacterial properties and pro-angiogenic effects. When incubated with H2O2, Cu@ZIF-8 nanoparticles generated reactive oxygen species, which contributed to their antibacterial properties. Due to the oxidative stress of the cupric ions released from Cu@ZIF-8 and the anti-bacterial capability of the PEGDA/CMCS hydrogel scaffold, such an MN array presents excellent antibacterial activity. Moreover, with the continuous release of Cu ions from the scaffold, such MNs are effective in terms of promoting angiogenesis. With considerable biocompatibility and a minimally invasive approach, the degradable MN array composed of PEGDA/CMCS possessed superior capabilities to continuously and steadily release the loaded ingredients and avoid secondary damage to the wound. Benefiting from these features, the Cu@ZIF-8 encapsulated degradable MN array can dramatically accelerate epithelial regeneration and neovascularization. These results indicated that the combination of Cu@ZIF-8 and degradable MN arrays is valuable in promoting wound healing, which opened a new window for treatment of skin defection.

Oriented ascorbic acid onto zeolitic metal-organic framework-8 membrane via microfluidic spinning for biomedical care

Nowadays, the hydrogen dressing and electrostatic spun films widely used on wounds do not facilitate the permeability of the wound area and fail to achieve controlled drug delivery. Therefore, finding a wound dressing with both breathability and targeted drug delivery has remained an unmet challenge. Here, an oriented microstructure membrane with sustained drug release and robust antibacterial performance was constructed through the microfluidic spinning method. The multifunctional oriented membrane was prepared by loading ascorbic acid onto the zeolitic metal-organic framework-8 to develop drug delivery nanomaterial zeolitic metal-organic framework-8 @ascorbic acid (ZIF-8 @AA) and then mixing ZIF-8 @AA with polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) solution via microfluidic technology, which produced an oriented microfiber member. In addition, the spinning parameters, including the fluid content, rotation speed, and flow rate, on microfiber diameter were evaluated. The constructed oriented membrane had bactericidal efficiencies of 82.94% ± 2.79% and 95.96% ± 1.54% against E. coli and S. aureus, respectively. After five days, the membrane still has a sustained release. Moreover, the fabricated membrane also has good biocompatibility and hemocompatibility in vitro. The oriented arrangement strategy provides a promising approach for wound healing materials in targeted drug delivery. Furthermore, this strategy offers a feasible idea for loading active materials into substrates for disease treatment in the biomedical field.

Constructing Physiological Defense Systems against Infectious Disease with Metal-Organic Frameworks: A Review

The swift and deadly spread of infectious diseases, alongside the rapid advancement of scientific technology in the past several centuries, has led to the invention of various methods for protecting people from infection. In recent years, a class of crystalline porous materials, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), has shown great potential in constructing defense systems against infectious diseases. This review addresses current approaches to combating infectious diseases through the utilization of MOFs in vaccine development, antiviral and antibacterial treatment, and personal protective equipment (PPE). Along with an updated account of MOFs used for designing defense systems against infectious diseases, directions are also suggested for expanding avenues of current MOF research to develop more effective approaches and tools to prevent the widespread nature of infectious diseases.

ZIF-8 induced hydroxyapatite-like crystals enabled superior osteogenic ability of MEW printing PCL scaffolds

ZIF-8 may experience ion-responsive degradation in ionic solutions, which will change its initial architecture and restrict its direct biological use. Herein, we report an abnormal phenomenon in which ZIF-8 induces large hydroxyapatite-like crystals when soaked directly in simulated body fluid. These crystals grew rapidly continuously for two weeks, with the volume increasing by over 10 folds. According to Zn2+ release and novel XRD diffraction peak presence, ZIF-8 particles can probably show gradual collapse and became congregate through re-nucleation and competitive coordination. The phenomenon could be found on ZIF-8/PCL composite surface and printed ZIF-8/PCL scaffold surface. ZIF-8 enhanced PCL roughness through changing the surface topography, while obviously improving the in-vivo and in-vitro osteoinductivity and biocompatibility. The pro-biomineralization property can make ZIF-8 also applicable in polylactic acid-based biomaterials. In summary, this study demonstrates that ZIF-8 may play the role of a bioactive additive enabling the surface modification of synthetic polymers, indicating that it can be applied in in-situ bone regeneration.

Biomedical equipments, vaccine and drug in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of COVID-19

SARS-CoV-2 virus caused an infectious disease, named COVID-19. Biomedical equipments, vaccine and drug have played a crucial role in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment. Nevertheless, up to now, there still has been no literature summarizing the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of this infectious disease from the perspective of biomedical equipments. Thus, this review wants to give an overview on the biomedical equipments, vaccine and drug in the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of this disease, and avoids the overlap with previous research, more emphasis on biomedical equipments, and less emphasis on biomaterials. The existing problems in the current research and application were summarized, and the future research direction was proposed, so as to provide reference to deal with similar viral infections in the future.

Biogenic production of silver, zinc oxide, and cuprous oxide nanoparticles, and their impregnation into textiles with antiviral activity against SARS-CoV-2

Nanotechnology is being used to fight off infections caused by viruses, and one of the most outstanding nanotechnological uses is the design of protective barriers made of textiles functionalized with antimicrobial agents, with the challenge of combating the SARS-CoV-2 virus, the causal agent of COVID-19. This research is framed within two fundamental aspects: the first one is linked to the proposal of new methods of biogenic synthesis of silver, cuprous oxide, and zinc oxide nanoparticles using organic extracts as reducing agents. The second one is the application of nanomaterials in the impregnation (functionalization) of textiles based on methods called "in situ" (within the synthesis), and "post-synthesis" (after the synthesis), with subsequent evaluation of their effectiveness in reducing the viral load of SARS-CoV-2. The results show that stable, monodisperse nanoparticles with defined geometry can be obtained. Likewise, the "in situ" impregnation method emerges as the best way to adhere nanoparticles. The results of viral load reduction show that 'in situ' textiles with Cu2O NP achieved a 99.79% load reduction of the SARS-CoV-2 virus.

Nano-copper ions assembled cellulose-based composite with antibacterial activity for biodegradable personal protective mask

The current SARS-CoV-2 pandemic has resulted in the widespread use of personal protective equipment, particularly face masks. However, the use of commercial disposable face masks puts great pressure on the environment. In this study, nano-copper ions assembled cotton fabric used in face masks to impart antibacterial activity has been discussed. To produce the nanocomposite, the cotton fabric was modified by sodium chloroacetate after its mercerization, and assembled with bactericidal nano-copper ions (about 10.61 mg·g-1) through electrostatic adsorption. It demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli because the gaps between fibers in the cotton fabric allow the nano-copper ions to be fully released. Moreover, the antibacterial efficiency was maintained even after 50 washing cycles. Furthermore, the face mask constructed with this novel nanocomposite upper layer exhibited a high particle filtration efficiency (96.08% ± 0.91%) without compromising the air permeability (28.9 min·L-1). This green, economical, facile, and scalable process of depositing nano-copper ions onto modified cotton fibric has great potential to reduce disease transmission, resource consumption, and environmental impact of waste, while also expanding the range of protective fabrics.

Dual-crosslinked network of polyacrylamide-carboxymethylcellulose hydrogel promotes osteogenic differentiation in vitro

In our previous study, we successfully designed a dual-crosslinked network hydrogel by introducing the monomers acrylamide (AM), carboxymethylcellulose (CMC), zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), and alendronate (Aln). With the simultaneous presentation of physical and chemical crosslinks, the fabricated hydrogel with 10 % concentration of Aln@ZIF-8 (PAM-CMC-10%Aln@ZIF-8) exhibited excellent mechanical characteristics, high Aln loading efficiency (63.83 %), and a slow release period (6 d). These results demonstrate that PAM-CMC-10%Aln@ZIF-8 is a potential carrier for delaying Aln. In this study, we mainly focused on the biocompatibility and osteogenic ability of PAM-CMC-10%Aln@ZIF-8 in vitro, which is a continuation of our previous work. First, this study investigated the biocompatibility of dual-crosslinked hydrogels using calcein-AM/Propidium Iodide and cell counting kit-8. The morphology of rat bone mesenchymal stem cells was assessed using FITC-phalloidin/DAPI and vinculin immunostaining. Finally, osteogenic induction ability in vitro was assessed via alkaline phosphatase expression and alizarin red S staining, which was also confirmed using real-time PCR at the gene level and immunofluorescence at the protein level. The results indicated that the introduction of Aln enabled a dual-crosslinked hydrogel with superior biocompatibility and outstanding osteogenic differentiation ability in vitro, providing a solid foundation for subsequent animal experiments in vivo.

Advanced and Smart Textiles during and after the COVID-19 Pandemic: Issues, Challenges, and Innovations

The COVID-19 pandemic has hugely affected the textile and apparel industry. Besides the negative impact due to supply chain disruptions, drop in demand, liquidity problems, and overstocking, this pandemic was found to be a window of opportunity since it accelerated the ongoing digitalization trends and the use of functional materials in the textile industry. This review paper covers the development of smart and advanced textiles that emerged as a response to the outbreak of SARS-CoV-2. We extensively cover the advancements in developing smart textiles that enable monitoring and sensing through electrospun nanofibers and nanogenerators. Additionally, we focus on improving medical textiles mainly through enhanced antiviral capabilities, which play a crucial role in pandemic prevention, protection, and control. We summarize the challenges that arise from personal protective equipment (PPE) disposal and finally give an overview of new smart textile-based products that emerged in the markets related to the control and spread reduction of SARS-CoV-2.

Virus Management Using Metal-Organic Framework-Based Technologies

The eradication and isolation of viruses are two concurrent approaches to protect ourselves from viral infections and diseases. The quite versatile porous materials called metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), have recently emerged as efficient nanosized tools to manage viruses, and several strategies to accomplish these tasks have been developed. This review describes these strategies employing nanoscale MOFs against SARS-CoV-2, HIV-1, tobacco mosaic virus, etc., which include the sequestration by host-guest penetration inside pores, mineralization, design of a physical barrier, controlled delivery of organic and inorganic antiviral drugs or bioinhibitors, photosensitization of singlet oxygen, and direct contact with inherently cytotoxic MOFs.

Covalent Bonding Enhanced Polypropylene Based T-ZIF-8 Masterbatch with Superior Photocatalytic and Antibacterial Performances

In order to solve the problem of poor compatibility between modified-ZIF-8 nanoparticles and mask matrix polypropylene (PP) and melt-blown materials, in this work, PP based modified-ZIF-8 antibacterial masterbatch was prepared employing surface modification and torque blending method. IR, SEM, XRD, XPS, DSC results confirm that the antibacterial masterbatch maintains the chemical and crystal structure of modified-ZIF-8 and the thermal stability of PP. Photocatalytic performance indicates that the antibacterial masterbatch basically maintains the photoresponse range of modified-ZIF-8, has narrower band gap and the superior photocatalytic performance than that of modified-ZIF-8. The photocatalytic antibacterial mechanism of ·O2- and h+ as antibacterial active species is revealed according to the energy band structure and free radical capture experiment. The photocatalytic antibacterial activity of the antibacterial masterbatch against Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli under different dosage holds that the relationship between antibacterial rate and antibacterial agent concentration conforms to Beta distribution, demonstrating second-order kinetic behavior. The antibacterial properties reach the maximum when the loading of modified-ZIF-8 is 2% of the total weight of PP and melt-blown materials. S. aureus and E. coli could be completely killed when the simulated sunlight is irradiated for 30 min. These results indicate that PP based modified-ZIF-8 antibacterial masterbatch has potential application in photocatalytic antibacterial masks.

Facile synthesis of dual-hydrolase encapsulated magnetic ZIF-8 composite for efficient removal of multi-pesticides induced pollution in water

Multi-pesticides pollution induced by organophosphorus insecticides (OPs) and aryloxyphenoxypropionate herbicides (AOPPs) has become a significant challenge in bioremediation of water pollution due to their prolonged and over application. Though a number of physical, chemical, and biological approaches have been developed for different pesticides, the explorations usually focus on eliminating single pesticide pollution. Herein, a heterostructure nanocomposite OPH/QpeH@mZIF-8, encapsulating OPs hydrolase OPH and AOPPs hydrolase QpeH in the magnetic zeolitic imidazolate frameworks-8 (mZIF-8), was synthesized through a facile one-pot method in aqueous solution. The immobilized OPH and QpeH in mZIF-8 showed high activities towards the two most common OPs and AOPPs, i.e., chlorpyrifos and quizalofop-P-ethyl, which were hydrolyzed to 3,5,6-Trichloro-2-pyridino (TCP) and quizalofop acid, respectively. Moreover, the magnetic nanocatalyst possessed great tolerance towards broad pH range, high temperatures, and different chemical solvents and excellent recyclability. More importantly, compared to free OPH and QpeH, OPH/QpeH@mZIF-8, with significantly enhanced degradation capability, exhibited enormous potential for simultaneous removal of chlorpyrifos and quizalofop-p-ethyl from the surface and industrial wastewater. Overall, the study demonstrates the applicability of this strategy for utilizing magnetic nanocatalysts encapsulating multiple enzymes due to its simplicity, high efficiency, and economic benefits to removing pesticide compound pollution from various water resources.

Tackling COVID-19 Using Antiviral Nanocoating's-Recent Progress and Future Challenges

In the current situation of the global coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic, there is a worldwide demand for the protection of regular handling surfaces from viral transmission to restrict the spread of COVID-19 infection. To tackle this challenge, researchers and scientists are continuously working on novel antiviral nanocoatings to make various substrates capable of arresting the spread of such pathogens. These nanocoatings systems include metal/metal oxide nanoparticles, electrospun antiviral polymer nanofibers, antiviral polymer nanoparticles, graphene family nanomaterials, and etched nanostructures. The antiviral mechanism of these systems involves depletion of the spike glycoprotein that anchors to surfaces by the nanocoating and makes the spike glycoprotein and viral nucleotides inactive; however, the nature of the interaction between the spike proteins and virus depends on the type of nanostructure and a surface charge over the coating surface. In this article, the current scenario of COVID-19 and how it can be tackled using antiviral nanocoatings from the further transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), along with their different mode of action, are discussed. Additionally, it is also highlighted different types of nanocoatings developed for various substrates to encounter transmission of SARS-CoV-2, future research areas along with the current challenges related to it, and how these challenges can be resolved.

Stimuli-Activable Metal-Bearing Nanomaterials and Precise On-Demand Antibacterial Strategies

Bacterial infections remain the leading cause of death worldwide today. The emergence of antibiotic resistance has urged the development of alternative antibacterial technologies to complement or replace traditional antibiotic treatments. In this regard, metal nanomaterials have attracted great attention for their controllable antibacterial functions that are less prone to resistance. This review discusses a particular family of stimuli-activable metal-bearing nanomaterials (denoted as SAMNs) and the associated on-demand antibacterial strategies. The various SAMN-enabled antibacterial strategies stem from basic light and magnet activation, with the addition of bacterial microenvironment responsiveness and/or bacteria-targeting selectivity and therefore offer higher spatiotemporal controllability. The discussion focuses on nanomaterial design principles, antibacterial mechanisms, and antibacterial performance, as well as emerging applications that desire on-demand and selective activation (i.e., medical antibacterial treatments, surface anti-biofilm, water disinfection, and wearable antibacterial materials). The review concludes with the authors' perspectives on the challenges and future directions for developing industrial translatable next-generation antibacterial strategies.

Advanced Plasmonic Nanoparticle-Based Techniques for the Prevention, Detection, and Treatment of Current COVID-19

Coronavirus is an ongoing global pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. Coronavirus disease 2019 known as COVID-19 is the worst pandemic since World War II. The outbreak of COVID-19 had a significant repercussion on the health, economy, politics, and environment, making coronavirus-related issues more complicated and becoming one of the most challenging pandemics of the last century with deadly outcomes and a high rate of the reproduction number. There are thousands of different types - or variants - of COVID circulating across the world. Viruses mutate all the time; it emphasizes the critical need for the designing of efficient vaccines to prevent virus infection, early and fast diagnosis, and effective antiviral and protective therapeutics. In this regard, the use of nanotechnology offers new opportunities for the development of novel strategies in terms of prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of COVID-19. This review presents an outline of the platforms developed using plasmonic nanoparticles in the detection, treatment, and prevention of SARS-CoV-2. We select the best strategies in each of these approaches. The properties of metallic plasmon NPs and their relevance in the development of novel point-of-care diagnosis approaches for COVID-19 are highlighted. Also, we discuss the current challenges and the future perspectives looking towards the clinical translation and the commercial aspects of nanotechnology and plasmonic NP-based diagnostic tools and therapy to fight COVID-19 pandemic. The article could be of significance for researchers dedicated to developing suitable plasmonic detection tools and therapy approaches for COVID-19 viruses and future pandemics.

Multiscale landscaping of droplet wettability on fibrous layers of facial masks

Liquid mobility is ubiquitous in nature, with droplets emerging at all size scales, and artificial surfaces have been designed to mimic such mobility over the past few decades. Meanwhile, millimeter-sized droplets are frequently used for wettability characterization, even with facial mask applications, although these applications have a droplet-size target range that spans from millimeters to aerosols measuring less than a few micrometers. Unlike large droplets, microdroplets can interact sensitively with the fibers they contact with and are prone to evaporation. However, wetting behaviors at the single-microfiber level remain poorly understood. Herein, we characterized the wettability of fibrous layers, which revealed that a multiscale landscape of droplets ranged from the millimeter to the micrometer scale. The contact angle (CA) values of small droplets on pristine fibrous media showed sudden decrements, especially on a single microfiber, owing to the lack of air cushions for the tiny droplets. Moreover, droplets easily adhered to the pristine layer during droplet impact tests and then yielding widespread areas of contamination on the microfibers. To resolve this, we carved nanowalls on the pristine fibers by plasma etching, which effectively suppressed such wetting phenomena. Significantly, the resulting topographies of the microfibers managed the dynamic wettability of droplets at the multiscale, which reduced the probability of contamination with impact droplets and suppressed the wetting transition upon evaporation. These findings for the dynamic wettability of fibrous media will be useful in the fight against infectious droplets.

Nanotechnology Transition Roadmap toward Multifunctional Stimuli-Responsive Face Masks

In recent times, the use of personal protective equipment, such as face masks or respirators, is becoming more and more critically important because of common pollution; furthermore, face masks have become a necessary element in the global fight against the COVID-19 pandemic. For this reason, the main mission of scientists has become the development of face masks with exceptional properties that will enhance their performance. The versatility of electrospun polymer nanofibers has determined their suitability as a material for constructing "smart" filter media. This paper provides an overview of the research carried out on nanofibrous filters obtained by electrospinning. The progressive development of the next generation of face masks whose unique properties can be activated in response to a specific external stimulus is highlighted. Thanks to additional components incorporated into the fiber structure, filters can, for example, acquire antibacterial or antiviral properties, self-sterilize the structure, and store the energy generated by users. Despite the discovery of several fascinating possibilities, some of them remain unexplored. Stimuli-responsive filters have the potential to become products of large-scale availability and great importance to society as a whole.

Shielding Surfaces from Viruses and Bacteria with a Multiscale Coating

The spread of viral and bacterial pathogens mediated by contact with surfaces is a leading cause of infection worldwide. COVID-19 and the continuous rise of deaths associated with antibiotic-resistant bacteria highlight the need to impede surface-mediated transmission. A sprayable coating with an intrinsic ability to resist the uptake of bacteria and viruses from surfaces and droplets, such as those generated by sneezing or coughing, is reported. The coating also provides an effective microbicidal functionality against bacteria, providing a dual barrier against pathogen uptake and transmission. This antimicrobial functionality is fully preserved following scratching and other induced damage to its surface or 9 days of submersion in a highly concentrated suspension of bacteria. The coatings also register an 11-fold decrease in viral contamination compared to the noncoated surfaces.

From Prevention to Therapy: A Roadmap of Nanotechnologies to Stay Ahead of Future Pandemics

Several recent viral outbreaks, culminating in the COVID-19 pandemic, have illustrated the need for comprehensive improvement in the detection, control, and treatment of emerging viruses that exhibit the potential to cause epidemics. Nanotechnology approaches have the potential to make major contributions in all these areas. This perspective is intended to outline how nanotechnology can be employed to improve upon respiratory disease detection and containment measures, and therapeutics, with a particular emphasis on applications that can address key areas, including home diagnostics, contact tracing, and the evaluation of durability of vaccine protection over time and against future variants. Nanotechnology offers potent tools to address these needs, but further research is required to validate these applications to address needs of future epidemics.

Nanomaterials and metal-organic frameworks for biosensing applications of mutations of the emerging viruses

The world today lives in a state of terrible fear due to the mutation of the emerging COVID-19. With the continuation of this pandemic, there is an urgent need for fast, accurate testing devices to detect the emerging SARS-CoV-2 pandemic in terms of biosensors and point-of-care testing. Besides, the urgent development in personal defense tools, anti-viral surfaces and wearables, and smartphones open the door for simplifying the self-diagnosis process everywhere. This review introduces a quick COVID-19 overview: definition, transmission, pathophysiology, the identification and diagnosis, mutation and transformation, and the global situation. It also focuses on an overview of the rapidly advanced technologies based on nanomaterials and MOFs for biosensing, diagnosing, and viral control of the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic. Finally, highlight the latest technologies, applications, existing achievements, and preventive diagnostic strategies to control this epidemic and combat the emerging coronavirus. This humble effort aims to provide a helpful survey that can be used to develop a creative solution and to lay down the future vision of diagnosis against COVID-19.

Biodegradable Nonwoven Materials with Antipathogenic Layer

Biopolymer composites have received increasing attention for their beneficial properties such as being biodegradable and having less influence to the environment. Biodegradability of materials has become a desired feature due to the growing problems connected with waste management. The aim of the paper is to emphasize the importance of biodegradable textile materials, especially nonwoven materials with an anti-pathogenic layer. The article refers to the definitions of biodegradation, degradation and composting processes, as well as presenting methods of testing biodegradability depending on the type of material. The study gives examples of biodegradation of textiles and presents examples of qualitative and quantitative methods used for testing antimicrobial activity of biodegradable nonwovens with an anti-pathogenic layer.

Antimicrobial second skin using copper nanomesh

The recent COVID-19 pandemic requires long-term and real-life applicable antimicrobial skin protection. However, there has been no practical solution to prevent cross-infection while preserving intrinsic skin naturalness. Conventional blocking-based approaches such as gloves cannot preserve the skin sterility and modify the morphology, temperature change rate, and humidity affecting our sensation and comfort. Here, we propose a skin-attachable protection platform copper nanomesh, which prevents cross-infection while maintaining skin naturalness. Copper nanomesh composed of copper coating and interconnected polymer nanofibers kills 99.99% of bacteria and viruses within 1 and 10 min and prevents bacterial cross-infection. The thin and porous structure of the nanomesh enables natural skin-environment interaction in terms of the morphology, temperature change rate, and humidity compared to films or gloves.

The functional support and advancement of our body while preserving inherent naturalness is one of the ultimate goals of bioengineering. Skin protection against infectious pathogens is an application that requires common and long-term wear without discomfort or distortion of the skin functions. However, no antimicrobial method has been introduced to prevent cross-infection while preserving intrinsic skin conditions. Here, we propose an antimicrobial skin protection platform copper nanomesh, which prevents cross-infectionmorphology, temperature change rate, and skin humidity. Copper nanomesh exhibited an inactivation rate of 99.99% for Escherichia coli bacteria and influenza virus A within 1 and 10 min, respectively. The thin and porous nanomesh allows for conformal coating on the fingertips, without significant interference with the rate of skin temperature change and humidity. Efficient cross-infection prevention and thermal transfer of copper nanomesh were demonstrated using direct on-hand experiments.

Antiviral nanopharmaceuticals: Engineered surface interactions and virus-selective activity

The COVID-19 pandemic has inspired large research investments from the global scientific community in the study of viral properties and antiviral technologies (e.g., self-cleaning surfaces, virucides, antiviral drugs, and vaccines). Emerging viruses are a constant threat due to the substantial variation in viral structures, limiting the potential for expanded broad-spectrum antiviral agent development, and the complexity of targeting multiple and diverse viral species with unique characteristics involving their virulence. Multiple, more infectious variants of SARS-CoV2 (e.g., Delta, Omicron) have already appeared, necessitating research into versatile, robust control strategies in response to the looming threat of future viruses. Nanotechnology and nanomaterials have played a vital role in addressing current viral threats, from mRNA-based vaccines to nanoparticle-based drugs and nanotechnology enhanced disinfection methods. Rapid progress in the field has prompted a review of the current literature primarily focused on nanotechnology-based virucides and antivirals. In this review, a brief description of antiviral drugs is provided first as background with most of the discussion focused on key design considerations for high-efficacy antiviral nanomaterials (e.g., nanopharmaceuticals) as determined from published studies as well as related modes of biological activity. Insights into potential future research directions are also provided with a section devoted specifically to the SARS-CoV2 virus. Virucidal N95 Respirator Face Masks via Ultrathin Surface-Grafted Quaternary Ammonium Polymer Coatings

N95 respirator face masks serve as effective physical barriers against airborne virus transmission, especially in a hospital setting. However, conventional filtration materials, such as nonwoven polypropylene fibers, have no inherent virucidal activity, and thus, the risk of surface contamination increases with wear time. The ability of face masks to protect against infection can be likely improved by incorporating components that deactivate viruses on contact. We present a facile method for covalently attaching antiviral quaternary ammonium polymers to the fiber surfaces of nonwoven polypropylene fabrics that are commonly used as filtration materials in N95 respirators via ultraviolet (UV)-initiated grafting of biocidal agents. Here, C₁₂-quaternized benzophenone is simultaneously polymerized and grafted onto melt-blown or spunbond polypropylene fabric using 254 nm UV light. This grafting method generated ultrathin polymer coatings which imparted a permanent cationic charge without grossly changing fiber morphology or air resistance across the filter. For melt-blown polypropylene, which comprises the active filtration layer of N95 respirator masks, filtration efficiency was negatively impacted from 72.5 to 51.3% for uncoated and coated single-ply samples, respectively. Similarly, directly applying the antiviral polymer to full N95 masks decreased the filtration efficiency from 90.4 to 79.8%. This effect was due to the exposure of melt-blown polypropylene to organic solvents used in the coating process. However, N95-level filtration efficiency could be achieved by wearing coated spunbond polypropylene over an N95 mask or by fabricating N95 masks with coated spunbond as the exterior layer. Coated materials demonstrated broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against several lipid-enveloped viruses, as well as Staphylococcus aureus and Escherichia coli bacteria. For example, a 4.3-log reduction in infectious MHV-A59 virus and a 3.3-log reduction in infectious SuHV-1 virus after contact with coated filters were observed, although the level of viral deactivation varied significantly depending on the virus strain and protocol for assaying infectivity.

Always-on photocatalytic antibacterial facemask with mini UV-LED array

The facemask is a device to protect yourself and others against pandemics, such as coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), and adding a functional filter to the facemask could offer extra protection against infectious microbes (such as bacteria and viruses) to the wearer. Here, we designed and fabricated an always-on photocatalytic antibacterial facemask, which comprised a reusable polypropylene filter layer coated with the photocatalytic laminated ZnO/TiO₂ bilayer and a separate UV-LEDs layer to supply UV whenever necessary. The fabricated photocatalytic filter was able to be directly inserted into the reusable facemask together with the UV-LEDs layer. This facemask could be used repeatedly and sustainably anytime and anywhere regardless of solar illumination. The photocatalytic filter exhibited an excellent photocatalytic antibacterial effect likely due to recombination suppression of electrons and holes of ZnO/TiO₂ bilayer and wetting transition from hydrophilic to superhydrophilic state on the surface of the filter. Thanks to the kirigami pattern in both photocatalytic filter and UV-LEDs layer, full-face covering, breathability, flexibility, and the snug fit are believed to be improved. Although further in-depth studies are still needed and there is a long way to go, we expect our design idea on the facemask to be considered in various fields.

Recent breakthroughs in nanostructured antiviral coating and filtration materials: a brief review

COVID-19 persists as the most challenging pandemic of the 21st century with a high rate of transmission. The main pathway of SARS-CoV-2 transmission is aerosol-mediated infection transfer through virus-laden droplets that are expelled by infected people, whereas indirect transmission occurs when contact is made with a contaminated surface. This mini review delivers an overview of the current state of knowledge, research directions, and applications by examining the most recent developments in antiviral surface coatings and filters and analyzing their efficiencies. Reusable masks and other personal protective devices with antiviral properties and self-decontamination could be valuable tools in the fight against viral spread. Moreover, antiviral surface coatings that repel pathogens by preventing adhesion or neutralize pathogens with self-sanitizing ability are assumed to be the most desirable for terminating indirect transmission of viruses. Although many nanomaterials have shown high antiviral capacities, additional research is unquestionably required to develop next-generation antiviral agents with unique characteristics to face future viral outbreaks.

Novel sustainable filter for virus filtration and inactivation

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused a multi-scale impact on the world population that started from a nano-scale respiratory virus and led to the shutdown of macro-scale economies. Direct transmission of SARS-CoV-2 (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2) and its variants through aerosolized droplets is a major contributor towards increasing cases of this infection. To curb the spread, one of the best engineered solutions is the use of face masks to prevent the passage of infectious saliva micro-droplets from an infected person to a healthy person. The commercially available masks are single use, passive face-piece filters. These become difficult to breathe in during strenuous activities. Also, they need to be disposed regularly due to accumulation of unwanted particulate and pathogens over time. Frequent disposal of these masks is unsustainable for the environment. In this study, we have proposed a novel design for a filter for enhanced virus filtration, better breathability, and virus inactivation over time. The filter is called Hy–Cu named after its (Hy) drophobic properties and another significant layer comprises of copper (Cu). The breathability (pressure drop across filter) of Hy–Cu is tested and compared with widely used surgical masks and KN95 masks, both experimentally and numerically. The results show that the Hy–Cu filter offers at least 10% less air resistance as compared to commercially available masks. The experimental results on virus filtration and inactivation tests using MS2 bacteriophage (a similar protein structure as SARS-CoV-2) show that the novel filter has 90% filtering efficiency and 99% virus inactivation over a period of 2 h. This makes the Hy–Cu filter reusable and a judicious substitute to the single use masks.

Nanostructures for the Prevention, Diagnosis, and Treatment of SARS-CoV-2: A Review

Scientists, doctors, engineers, and even entire societies have become aware of the seriousness of the COVID-19 infection and are taking action quickly, using all the tools from protection to treatment against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2. Especially in this sense, scientific approaches and materials using nanotechnology are frequently preferred. In this review, we focus on how nanoscience and nanotechnology approaches can be used for protective equipment, diagnostic and treatment methods, medicine, and vaccine applications to stop the coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and prevent its spread. SARS-CoV-2, which itself can be considered as a core-shell nanoparticle, can interact with various materials around it and remain bound for variable periods of time while maintaining its bioactivity. These applications are especially critical for the controlled use of disinfection systems. One of the most important processes in the fight against coronavirus is the rapid diagnosis of the virus in humans and the initiation of isolation and treatment processes. The development of nanotechnology-based test and diagnostic kits is another important research thrust. Nanotechnological therapeutics based on antiviral drug design and nanoarchitecture vaccines have been vital. Nanotechnology plays critical roles in the production of protective film surfaces for self-cleaning and antiviral masks, gloves, and laboratory clothes. An overview of literature studies highlighting nanotechnology and nanomaterial-based approaches to combat SARS-CoV-2 is presented.

A pandemic-induced environmental dilemma of disposable masks: solutions from the perspective of the life cycle

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has swept the world and still afflicts humans. As an effective means of protection, wearing masks has been widely adopted by the general public. The massive use of disposable masks has raised some emerging environmental and bio-safety concerns: improper handling of used masks may transfer the attached pathogens to environmental media; disposable masks mainly consist of polypropylene (PP) fibers which may aggravate the global plastic pollution; and the risks of long-term wearing of masks are elusive. To maximize the utilization and minimize the risks, efforts have been made to improve the performance of masks (e.g., antivirus properties and filtration efficiency), extend their functions (e.g., respiration monitoring and acting as a sampling device), develop new disinfection methods, and recycle masks. Despite that, from the perspective of the life cycle (from production, usage, and discard to disposal), comprehensive solutions are urgently needed to solve the environmental dilemma of disposable masks in both technologies (e.g., efficient use of raw materials, prolonging the service life, and enabling biodegradation) and policies (e.g., stricter industry criteria and garbage sorting).

Antiviral/antibacterial biodegradable cellulose nonwovens as environmentally friendly and bioprotective materials with potential to minimize microplastic pollution

Personal protective equipment (PPE) such as face masks is vital in battling the COVID-19 crisis, but the dominant polypropylene-based PPE are lack of antiviral/antibacterial activities and environmental friendliness, and have hazardous impact on the soil and aquatic ecosystems. The work presented herein focused on developing biodegradable, antiviral, and antibacterial cellulose nonwovens (AVAB-CNWs) as a multi-functional bioprotective layer for better protection against coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 and addressing environmental concerns raised by the piling of COVID-19 related wastes. Both guanidine-based polymer and neomycin sulfate (NEO) were reactive-modified and covalently grafted onto the surface of cellulose nonwovens, thereby conferring outstanding antiviral and antibacterial activities to the nonwovens without deteriorating the microstructure and biodegradability. Through adjusting the grafting amount of active components and selecting appropriate reagents for pretreatment, the antimicrobial activity and hydrophobicity for self-cleaning of the nonwovens can be tuned. More importantly, we demonstrated for the first time that such multi-functional nonwovens are capable of inactivating SARS-CoV-2 instantly, leading to high virucidal activity (> 99.35%), which is unachievable by conventional masks used nowadays. Meanwhile, the robust breathability and biodegradability of AVAB-CNWs were well maintained. The applications of the as-prepared nonwovens as high-performance textile can be readily extended to other areas in the fight against COVID-19.

Nanocoatings: Universal antiviral surface solution against COVID-19

In the current scenario, there is critical global demand for the protection of daily handling surfaces from the viral contamination to limit the spread of COVID-19 infection. The nanotechnologists and material scientists offer sustainable solutions to develop antiviral surface coatings for various substrates including fabrics, plastics, metal, wood, food stuffs etc. to face current pandemic period. They create or propose antiviral surfaces by coating them with nanomaterials which interact with the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 to inhibit the viral entry to the host cell. Such nanomaterials involve metal/metal oxide nanoparticles, hierarchical metal/metal oxide nanostructures, electrospun polymer nanofibers, graphene nanosheets, chitosan nanoparticles, curcumin nanoparticles, etched nanostructures etc. The antiviral mechanism involves the repletion (depletion) of the spike glycoprotein that anchors to surfaces by the nanocoating and makes the spike glycoprotein and viral nucleotides inactive. The nature of interaction between the nanomaterial and virus depends on the type nanostructure coating over the surface. It was found that functional coating materials can be developed using nanomaterials as their polymer nanocomposites. The various aspects of antiviral nanocoatings including the mechanism of interaction with the Corona Virus, the different type of nanocoatings developed for various substrates, future research areas, new opportunities and challenges are reviewed in this article.

Potential metal-related strategies for prevention and treatment of COVID-19

Abstract

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has posed severe threats to human health, public safety, and the global economy. Metal nutrient elements can directly or indirectly take part in human immune responses, and metal-related drugs have served as antiviral drugs and/or enzyme inhibitors for many years, providing potential solutions to the prevention and treatment of COVID-19. Metal-based drugs are currently under a variety of chemical structures and exhibit wide-range bioactivities, demonstrating irreplaceable advantages in pharmacology. This review is an intention to summarize recent progress in the prevention and treatment strategies against COVID-19 from the perspective of metal pharmacology. The current and potential utilization of metal-based drugs is briefly introduced. Specifically, metallohydrogels that have been shown to present superior antiviral activities are stressed in the paper as potential drugs for the treatment of COVID-19.

Environmental decomposition and remodeled phytotoxicity of framework-based nanomaterials

Zeolitic imidazole frameworks (ZIFs) have attracted a considerable amount of attention for use in environmental applications (e.g., pollutant adsorption and photocatalysis in water treatments). The environmental stability and toxicity of ZIFs are key prerequisites for their practical applications, but information about these factors is largely lacking. The present work finds that pristine ZIFs (ZIF-8 and ZIF-67) photodegrade from frame structures into two-dimensional nanosheets and are oxidized to zinc carbonate (ZIF-8) and Co₃O₄ (ZIF-67) under visible-light irradiation. The photoinduced electrons, holes and free radicals promote dissolution of the metal cores and organic ligands, leading to collapse of the frame structure. The photodegradation of ZIF-8 alleviates developmental inhibition, oxidative stress, plasmolysis, and photosynthetic toxicity, while the photodegradation of ZIF-67 aggravates nanotoxicity. The integration of metabolomics and transcriptomics analysis reveals that unsaturated fatty acid biosynthesis and metal ion-binding transcription contribute to the altered toxicity of ZIF photodegradation. These findings highlight the roles of photodegradation in structural transformation and alteration of the toxicity of ZIFs, alarming the study of pristine metal-organic frameworks (MOFs).

Transparent Air Filters with Active Thermal Sterilization

The worldwide proliferation of COVID-19 poses the urgent need for sterilizable and transparent air filters to inhibit virus transmission while retaining ease of communication. Here, we introduce copper nanowires to fabricate transparent and self-sterilizable air filters. Copper nanowire air filter (CNAF) allowed visible light penetration, thereby can exhibit facial expressions, helpful for better communication. CNAF effectively captured particulate matter (PM) by mechanical and electrostatic filtration mechanisms. The temperature of CNAF could be controlled by Joule-heating up to 100 °C with thermal stability. CNAF successfully inhibited the growth of E. coli because of the oligodynamic effect of copper. With heat sterilization, the antibacterial efficiency against G. anodireducens was greatly improved up to 99.3% within 10 min. CNAF showed high reusability with stable filtration efficiency and thermal antibacterial efficacy after five repeated uses. Our result suggests an alternative form of active antimicrobial air filter in preparation for the current and future pandemic situations.

Eco-friendly chitosan@silver/plant fiber membranes for masks with thermal comfortability and self-sterilization

The surgical masks have been essential consumables for public in the COVID-19 pandemic. However, long-time wearing masks will make wearers feel uncomfortable and massive discarded non-biodegradable masks lead to a heavy burden on our environment. In this paper, we adopt degradable chitosan@silver (CS@Ag) core-shell fibers and plant fibers to prepare an eco-friendly mask with excellent thermal comfort, self-sterilization, and antiviral effects. The thermal network of CS@Ag core-shell fibers highly improves the in-plane thermal conductivity of masks, which is 4.45 times higher than that of commercial masks. Because of the electrical conductivity of Ag, the fabricated mask can be electrically heated to warm the wearer in a cold environment and disinfect COVID-19 facilely at room temperature. Meanwhile, the in-situ reduced silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) endow the mask with superior antibacterial properties. Therefore, this mask shows a great potential to address the urgent need for a thermally comfortable, antibacterial, antiviral, and eco-friendly mask.

Durable nanocomposite face masks with high particulate filtration and rapid inactivation of coronaviruses

The COVID-19 pandemic presents a unique challenge to the healthcare community due to the high infectivity rate and need for effective personal protective equipment. Zinc oxide nanoparticles have shown promising antimicrobial properties and are recognized as a safe additive in many food and cosmetic products. This work presents a novel nanocomposite synthesis approach, which allows zinc oxide nanoparticles to be grown within textile and face mask materials, including melt-blown polypropylene and nylon-cotton. The resulting nanocomposite achieves greater than 3 log10 reduction (≥ 99.9%) in coronavirus titer within a contact time of 10 min, by disintegrating the viral envelope. The new nanocomposite textile retains activity even after 100 laundry cycles and has been dermatologist tested as non-irritant and hypoallergenic. Various face mask designs were tested to improve filtration efficiency and breathability while offering antiviral protection, with Claros' design reporting higher filtration efficiency than surgical masks (> 50%) for particles ranged 200 nm to 5 µm in size.

Printed copper-nanoplate conductor for electro-magnetic interference

As one of the conductive ink materials with high electric conductivity, elemental copper (Cu) based nanocrystals promise for printable electronics. Here, single crystalline Cu nanoplates were synthesized using a facile hydrothermal method. Size engineering of Cu nanoplates can be rationalized by using the LaMer model and the versatile Cu conductive ink materials are suitable for different printing technologies. The printed Cu traces show high electric conductivity of 6 MS m^-1, exhibiting electro-magnetic interference shielding efficiency value of 75 dB at an average thicknesses of 11μm. Together with flexible alumina ceramic aerogel substrates, it kept 87% conductivity at the environmental temperature of 400 °C, demonstrating the potential of Cu conductive ink for high-temperature printable electronics applications.
