Random Alloyed versus Intermetallic Nanoparticles: A Comparison of Electrocatalytic Performance

High-entropy intermetallics: emerging inorganic materials for designing high-performance catalysts

Alloy materials have been used as promising platforms to upgrade catalytic performance that cannot be achieved with conventional monometallic materials. As a result of numerous efforts, the recent progress in the field of alloy catalysis has been remarkable, and a wide range of new advanced alloys have been considered as potential electro/thermal catalysts. Among advanced alloy materials, high-entropy intermetallics are novel materials, and their excellent catalytic performance has recently been reported. High-entropy intermetallics have several advantages over disordered solid-solution high-entropy alloys, that is, greater structural/thermal stability, more facile site isolation, more precise control of electronic structures, tunability, and multifunctionality. A multidimensional compositional space is indeed limitless, but such a compositional space also provides a well-designed surface configuration because of its ordered nature. In this review, we will provide fundamental insights into high-entropy intermetallics, including thermodynamic properties, synthesis requirements, characterization techniques, roles in catalysis, and reaction examples. The comprehensive information provided in this review will highlight the great application potential of high-entropy intermetallics for catalysis, and will accelerate the development of this newly developed field.

In-Flight Tuning of Au-Sn Nanoparticle Properties

Multimetallic nanoparticles possess a variety of beneficial properties with potential relevance for various applications. These metallic nanoparticles can consist of randomly ordered alloys, which retain the properties of the constituting elements, or ordered intermetallics, which possess extended properties. Depending on the desired application, specific alloys or intermetallic compounds are required. However, it remains challenging to achieve particular morphologies, crystal structures, chemical compositions, and particle sizes because of the inherent complexity of nanoparticle synthesis. In this work, Au-Sn nanoparticles were synthesized using a continuous one-step gas-phase synthesis method that offers the possibility to anneal the nanoparticles in flight directly after generation to tune their properties. The bimetallic model system Au-Sn, comprising both alloys and intermetallic compounds, was studied in the temperature range of 300 to 1100 °C. The bimetallic Au/Sn ratio in the nanoparticles can be adjusted with in-flight annealing between 70/30 and 40/60 atomic %. While Au-rich alloys are obtained at lower temperatures, the increase in the annealing temperature leads to the formation of more Sn-rich intermetallic phases. Surface and size effects greatly influence particle morphologies and phase fractions. This research opens new opportunities for the synthesis of customized nanoparticles by temperature adjustment and particle size selection.

Pt1.8Pd0.2CuGa Intermetallic Nanocatalysts with Enhanced Methanol Oxidation Performance for Efficient Hybrid Seawater Electrolysis

Seawater electrolysis is a potentially cost-effective approach to green hydrogen production, but it currently faces substantial challenges for its high energy consumption and the interference of chlorine evolution reaction (ClER). Replacing the energy-demanding oxygen evolution reaction with methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) represents a promising alternative, as MOR occurs at a significantly low anodic potential, which cannot only reduce the voltage needed for electrolysis but also completely circumvents ClER. To this end, developing high-performance MOR catalysts is a key. Herein, a novel quaternary Pt1.8Pd0.2CuGa/C intermetallic nanoparticle (i-NP) catalyst is reported, which shows a high mass activity (11.13 A mgPGM -1), a large specific activity (18.13 mA cmPGM -2), and outstanding stability toward alkaline MOR. Advanced characterization and density functional theory calculations reveal that the introduction of atomically distributed Pd in Pt2CuGa intermetallic markedly promotes the oxidation of key reaction intermediates by enriching electron concentration around Pt sites, resulting in weak adsorption of carbon-containing intermediates and favorable adsorption of synergistic OH- groups near Pd sites. MOR-assisted seawater electrolysis is demonstrated, which continuously operates under 1.23 V for 240 h in simulated seawater and 120 h in natural seawater without notable degradation.

Efficient Lead Removal by Assembly of Bio-Derived Ellagate Framework, Which Enables Electrocatalytic Reduction of CO2 to Formate

Lead (Pb) poisoning and CO2-induced global warming represent two exemplary environmental and energy issues threatening humanity. Various biomass-derived materials are reported to take up Pb and convert CO2 electrochemically into low-valent carbon species, but these works address the problems separately rather than settle the issues simultaneously. In this work, cheap, natural ellagic acid (EA) extracted from common plants is adopted to assemble a stable metal-organic framework (MOF), EA-Pb, by effective capture of Pb2+ ions in an aqueous medium (removal rate close to 99%). EA-Pb represents the first structurally well-defined Pb-based MOF showing selective electrocatalytic CO2-to-HCOO- conversion with Faradaic efficiency (FE) of 95.37% at -1.08 V versus RHE. The catalytic mechanism is studied by 13CO2 labeling, in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS), and theoretical calculation. The use of EA-Pb as an electrocatalyst for CO2 reduction represents a 2-in-1 solution of converting detrimental wastes (Pb2+) as well as natural resources (EA) into wealth (electrocatalytic EA-Pb) for addressing the global warming issue.

Pt3Sn0.5Mn0.5 Intermetallic Electrocatalyst with Superior Stability for CO-Resilient Methanol Oxidation

The sluggish kinetics of methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and poor long-term durability of catalysts are the main restrictions of the large-scale applications of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs). Herein, we demonstrated an inspirational ternary Pt3Sn0.5Mn0.5/DMC intermetallic catalyst that reached 4.78 mA cm-2 and 2.39 A mg-1Pt for methanol oxidation, which were 2.50/2.44 and 5.62/5.31 times that of commercial PtRu/C and Pt/C. After the durability test, Pt3Sn0.5Mn0.5/DMC presented a very low current density attenuation (38.5%), which was significantly lower than those for commercial PtRu/C catalyst (84.2%) and Pt/C (93.1%). Density functional theory (DFT) calculations revealed that the coregulation of Sn and Mn altered the surface electronic structure and endowed Pt3Sn0.5Mn0.5 with selective adsorption of Pt for CO and Sn for OH, which optimized the adsorption strength for intermediates and improved the reaction kinetics of MOR. Beyond offering an advanced electrocatalyst, this study provided a new point of view for the rational design of superior methanol oxidation catalysts for DMFC.

Enhanced Alkaline Hydrogen Evolution Reaction through Lanthanide-Modified Rhodium Intermetallic Catalysts

Design of highly efficient electrocatalysts for alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) is of paramount importance for water electrolysis, but still a considerable challenge because of the slow HER kinetics in alkaline environments. Alloying is recognized as an effective strategy to enhance the catalytic properties. Lanthanides (Ln) are recognized as an electronic and structural regulator, attributed to their unique 4f electron behavior and the phenomenon known as lanthanide contraction. Here, a new class of Rh3Ln intermetallics (IMs) are synthesized using the sodium vapor reduction method. The alloying process induced an upshift of the d-band center and electron transfer from Ln to Rh, resulting in optimized adsorption and dissociation energies for H2O molecules. Consequently, Rh3Tb IMs exhibited outstanding HER activity in both alkaline environments and seawater, displaying an overpotential of only 19 mV at 10 mA cm-2 and a Tafel slope of 22.2 mV dec-1. Remarkably, the current density of Rh3Tb IMs at 100 mV overpotential is 8.6 and 5.7 times higher than that of Rh/C and commercial Pt/C, respectively. This work introduces a novel approach to the rational design of HER electrocatalysis and sheds light on the role of lanthanides in electrocatalyst systems.

Colloidal Nanoparticles of High Entropy Materials: Capabilities, Challenges, and Opportunities in Synthesis and Characterization

Materials referred to as "high entropy" contain a large number of elements randomly distributed on the lattice sites of a crystalline solid, such that a high configurational entropy is presumed to contribute significantly to their formation and stability. High temperatures are typically required to achieve entropy stabilization, which can make it challenging to synthesize colloidal nanoparticles of high entropy materials. Nonetheless, strategies are emerging for the synthesis of colloidal high entropy nanoparticles, which are of interest for their synergistic properties and unique catalytic functions that arise from the large number of constituent elements and their interactions. In this Perspective, we highlight the classes of materials that have been made as colloidal high entropy nanoparticles as well as insights into the synthetic methods and the pathways by which they form. We then discuss the concept of "high entropy" within the context of colloidal materials synthesized at much lower temperatures than are typically required for entropy to drive their formation. Next, we identify and address challenges and opportunities in the field of high entropy nanoparticle synthesis. We emphasize aspects of materials characterization that are especially important to consider for nanoparticles of high entropy materials, including powder X-ray diffraction and elemental mapping with scanning transmission electron microscopy, which are among the most commonly used techniques in laboratory settings. Finally, we share perspectives on emerging opportunities and future directions involving colloidal nanoparticles of high entropy materials, with an emphasis on synthesis, characterization, and fundamental knowledge that is needed for anticipated advances in key application areas.

Introducing Electron Buffers into Intermetallic Pt Alloys against Surface Polarization for High-Performing Fuel Cells

Surface polarization under harsh electrochemical environments usually puts catalysts in a thermodynamically unstable state, which strictly hampers the thermodynamic stability of Pt-based catalysts in high-performance fuel cells. Here, we report a strategy by introducing electron buffers (variable-valence metals, M = Ti, V, Cr, and Nb) into intermetallic Pt alloy nanoparticle catalysts to suppress the surface polarization of Pt shells using the structurally ordered L10-M-PtFe as a proof of concept. Operando X-ray absorption spectra analysis suggests that with the potential increase, electron buffers, especially Cr, could facilitate an electron flow to form a electron-enriched Pt shell and thus weaken the surface polarization and tensile Pt strain. The best-performing L10-Cr-PtFe/C catalyst delivers superb oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) activity (mass activity = 1.41/1.02 A mgPt-1 at 0.9 V, rated power density = 14.0/9.2 W mgPt-1 in H2-air under a total Pt loading of 0.075/0.125 mgPt cm-2, respectively) and stability (20 mV voltage loss at 0.8 A cm-2 after 60,000 cycles of accelerated durability test) in a fuel cell cathode, representing one of the best reported ORR catalysts. Density functional theory calculations reveal that the optimized surface strain by introducing Cr on L10-PtFe/C accounts for the enhanced ORR activity, and the durability enhancement stems from the charge transfer contribution of Cr to the Pt shells and the increased kinetic energy barrier for Pt dissolution/Fe diffusion.

An Ultrasmall Ordered High-Entropy Intermetallic with Multiple Active Sites for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Controlling multimetallic ensembles at the atomic level is significantly challenging, particularly for high-entropy alloys with more than five elements. Herein, we report an innovative ultrasmall (∼2 nm) PtFeCoNiCuZn high-entropy intermetallic (PFCNCZ-HEI) with a well-ordered structure synthesized by using the space-confined strategy. By exploiting these combined metals, the PFCNCZ-HEI nanoparticles achieve an ultrahigh mass activity of 2.403 A mgPt-1 at 0.90 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode for the oxygen reduction reaction, which is up to 19-fold higher than that of state-of-the-art commercial Pt/C. A proton exchange membrane fuel cell assembled with PFCNCZ-HEI as the cathode (0.03 mgPt cm-2) exhibits a power density of 1.4 W cm-2 and a high mass-normalized rated power of 45 W mgPt-1. Furthermore, theoretical calculations reveal that the outer electrons of the non-noble-metal atoms on the surface of the PFCNCZ-HEI nanoparticle are modulated to show characteristics of multiple active centers. This work offers a promising catalyst design direction for developing highly ordered HEI nanoparticles for electrocatalysis.

Intermetallic Nanocrystals for Fuel-Cells-Based Electrocatalysis

Electrocatalysis underpins the renewable electrochemical conversions for sustainability, which further replies on metallic nanocrystals as vital electrocatalysts. Intermetallic nanocrystals have been known to show distinct properties compared to their disordered counterparts, and been long explored for functional improvements. Tremendous progresses have been made in the past few years, with notable trend of more precise engineering down to an atomic level and the investigation transferring into more practical membrane electrode assembly (MEA), which motivates this timely review. After addressing the basic thermodynamic and kinetic fundamentals, we discuss classic and latest synthetic strategies that enable not only the formation of intermetallic phase but also the rational control of other catalysis-determinant structural parameters, such as size and morphology. We also demonstrate the emerging intermetallic nanomaterials for potentially further advancement in energy electrocatalysis. Then, we discuss the state-of-the-art characterizations and representative intermetallic electrocatalysts with emphasis on oxygen reduction reaction evaluated in a MEA setup. We summarize this review by laying out existing challenges and offering perspective on future research directions toward practicing intermetallic electrocatalysts for energy conversions.

Coupling Single-Atom Sites and Ordered Intermetallic PtM Nanoparticles for Efficient Catalysis in Fuel Cells

The design of an efficient catalytic system with low Pt loading and excellent stability for the acidic oxygen reduction reaction is still a challenge for the extensive application of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells. Here, a gas-phase ordered alloying strategy is proposed to construct an effective synergistic catalytic system that blends PtM intermetallic compounds (PtM IMC, M = Fe, Cu, and Ni) and dense isolated transition metal sites (M-N4 ) on nitrogen-doped carbon (NC). This strategy enables Pt nanoparticles and defects on the NC support to timely trap flowing metal salt without partial aggregation, which is attributed to the good diffusivity of gaseous transition metal salts with low boiling points. In particular, the resulting Pt1 Fe1 IMC cooperating with Fe-N4 sites achieves cooperative oxygen reduction with a half-wave potential up to 0.94 V and leads to a high mass activity of 0.51 A  mgPt -1 and only 23.5% decay after 30 k cycles, both of which exceed DOE 2025 targets. This strategy provides a method for reducing Pt loading in fuel cells by integrating Pt-based intermetallics and single transition metal sites to produce an efficient synergistic catalytic system.

Electrochemical reduction of wastewater by non-noble metal cathodes: From terminal purification to upcycling recovery

A shift beyond conventional environmental remediation to a sustainable pollutant upgrading conversion is extremely desirable due to the rising demand for resources and widespread chemical contamination. Electrochemical reduction processes (ERPs) have drawn considerable attention in recent years in the fields of oxyanion reduction, metal recovery, detoxification and high-value conversion of halogenated organics and benzenes. ERPs also have the potential to address the inherent limitations of conventional chemical reduction technologies in terms of hydrogen and noble metal requirements. Fundamentally, mechanisms of ERPs can be categorized into three main pathways: direct electron transfer, atomic hydrogen mediation, and electrode redox pairs. Furthermore, this review consolidates state-of-the-art non-noble metal cathodes and their performance comparable to noble metals (e.g., Pd, Pt) in electrochemical reduction of inorganic/organic pollutants. To overview the research trends of ERPs, we innovatively sort out the relationship between the electrochemical reduction rate, the charge of the pollutant, and the number of electron transfers based on the statistical analysis. And we propose potential countermeasures of pulsed electrocatalysis and flow mode enhancement for the bottlenecks in electron injection and mass transfer for electronegative pollutant reduction. We conclude by discussing the gaps in the scientific and engineering level of ERPs, and envisage that ERPs can be a low-carbon pathway for industrial wastewater detoxification and valorization.

A general protocol for precise syntheses of ordered mesoporous intermetallic nanoparticles

Intermetallic nanomaterials consist of two or more metals in a highly ordered atomic arrangement. There are many possible combinations and morphologies, and exploring their properties is an important research area. Their strict stoichiometry requirement and well-defined atom binding environment make intermetallic compounds an ideal research platform to rationally optimize catalytic performance. Making mesoporous intermetallic materials is a further advance; crystalline mesoporosity can expose more active sites, facilitate the mass and electron transfer, and provide the distinguished mesoporous nanoconfinement environment. In this Protocol, we describe how to prepare ordered mesoporous intermetallic nanomaterials with controlled compositions, morphologies/structures and phases by a general concurrent template strategy. In this approach, the concurrent template used is a hybrid of mesoporous platinum or palladium and Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology-6 (KIT-6) (meso-Pt/KIT-6 or meso-Pd/KIT-6) that can be transformed by the second precursors under reducing conditions. The second precursor can either be a second metal or a metalloid/non-metal, e.g., boron/phosphorus. KIT-6 is a silica scaffold that is removed using NaOH or HF to form the mesoporous product. Procedures for example catalytic applications include the 3-nitrophenylacetylene semi-hydrogenation reaction, p-nitrophenol reduction reaction and electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction. The synthetic strategy for preparation of ordered mesoporous intermetallic nanoparticles would take almost 5 d; the physical characterization by electron microscope, X-ray diffraction and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry takes ~2 days and the function characterization depends on the research question, but for catalysis it takes 1-5 h.

Seeded Synthesis of Hollow PdSn Intermetallic Nanomaterials for Highly Efficient Electrocatalytic Glycerol Oxidation

Intermetallic nanomaterials have shown promising potential as high-performance catalysts in various catalytic reactions due to their unconventional crystal phases with ordered atomic arrangements. However, controlled synthesis of intermetallic nanomaterials with tunable crystal phases and unique hollow morphologies remains a challenge. Here, a seeded method is developed to synthesize hollow PdSn intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) with two different intermetallic phases, that is, orthorhombic Pd2 Sn and monoclinic Pd3 Sn2 . Benefiting from the rational regulation of the crystal phase and morphology, the obtained hollow orthorhombic Pd2 Sn NPs deliver excellent electrocatalytic performance toward glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR), outperforming solid orthorhombic Pd2 Sn NPs, hollow monoclinic Pd3 Sn2 NPs, and commercial Pd/C, which places it among the best reported Pd-based GOR electrocatalysts. The reaction mechanism of GOR using the hollow orthorhombic Pd2 Sn as the catalyst is investigated by operando infrared reflection absorption spectroscopy, which reveals that the hollow orthorhombic Pd2 Sn catalyst cleaves the CC bond more easily compared to the commercial Pd/C. This work can pave an appealing route to the controlled synthesis of diverse novel intermetallic nanomaterials with hollow morphology for various promising applications.

Platinum-Lead-Bismuth/Platinum-Bismuth Core/Shell Nanoplate Achieves Complete Dehydrogenation Pathway for Direct Formic Acid Oxidation Catalysis

Designing platinum (Pt)-based formic acid oxidation reaction (FAOR) catalysts with high performance and high selectivity of direct dehydrogenation pathway for direct formic acid fuel cell (DFAFC) is desirable yet challenging. Herein, we report a new class of surface-uneven PtPbBi/PtBi core/shell nanoplates (PtPbBi/PtBi NPs) as the highly active and selective FAOR catalysts, even in the complicated membrane electrode assembly (MEA) medium. They can achieve unprecedented specific and mass activities of 25.1 mA cm^-2 and 7.4 A mg_Pt^-1 for FAOR, 156 and 62 times higher than those of commercial Pt/C, respectively, which is the highest for a FAOR catalyst by far. Simultaneously, they show highly weak adsorption of CO and high dehydrogenation pathway selectivity in the FAOR test. More importantly, the PtPbBi/PtBi NPs can reach the power density of 161.5 mW cm^-2, along with a stable discharge performance (45.8% decay of power density at 0.4 V for 10 h), demonstrating great potential in a single DFAFC device. The in situ Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) results collectively reveal a local electron interaction between PtPbBi and PtBi. In addition, the high-tolerance PtBi shell can effectively inhibit the production/adsorption of CO, resulting in the complete presence of the dehydrogenation pathway for FAOR. This work demonstrates an efficient Pt-based FAOR catalyst with 100% direct reaction selectivity, which is of great significance for driving the commercialization of DFAFC.

Amorphous TiOx Stabilized Intermetallic Pt3Ti Nanocatalyst for Methanol Oxidation Reaction

Intermetallic compounds, featuring atomically ordered structures, have emerged as a class of promising electrocatalysts for fuel cells. However, it remains a formidable challenge to controllably synthesize Pt-based intermetallics during the essential high-temperature annealing process as well as stabilize the nanoparticles (NPs) during the electrocatalytic process. Herein, we demonstrated a Ketjen black supported intermetallic Pt₃Ti nanocatalyst coupled with amorphous TiO_x species (Pt₃Ti-TiO_x/KB). The TiO_x can not only confine Pt₃Ti NPs during the synthesis and electrocatalytic process by a strong metal-oxide interaction but also promote the water dissociation for generating more OH species, thus facilitating the conversion of CO_ad. The Pt₃Ti-TiO_x/KB showed a significantly enhanced mass activity (2.15 A mg_Pt^-1) for the methanol oxidation reaction, compared with Pt₃Ti/KB and Pt/C, and presented an impressively high mass activity retention (∼71%) after the durability test. This work provides an effective strategy of coupling Pt-based intermetallics with functional oxides for developing highly performed electrocatalysts.

Practical Considerations for Simulating the Plasmonic Properties of Metal Nanoparticles

Simulating the plasmonic properties of colloidally derived metal nanoparticles with accuracy to their experimentally observed measurements is challenging due to the many structural and compositional parameters that influence their scattering and absorption properties. Correlation between single nanoparticle scattering measurements and simulated spectra emphasize these strong structural and compositional relationships, providing insight into the design of plasmonic nanoparticles. This Perspective builds from this history to highlight how the structural features of models used in simulation methods such as those based on the Finite-Difference Time-Domain (FDTD) method and Discrete Dipole Approximation (DDA) are of critical consideration for correlation with experiment and ultimately prediction of new nanoparticle properties. High-level characterizations such as electron tomography are discussed as ways to advance the accuracy of models used in such simulations, allowing the plasmonic properties of structurally complex nanoparticles to be better understood. However, we also note that the field is far from bringing experiment and simulation into agreement for plasmonic nanoparticles with complex compositions, reflecting analytical challenges that inhibit accurate model generation. Potential directions for addressing these challenges are also presented.

Shape-Controlled Synthesis of Platinum-Based Nanocrystals and Their Electrocatalytic Applications in Fuel Cells

To achieve environmentally benign energy conversion with the carbon neutrality target via electrochemical reactions, the innovation of electrocatalysts plays a vital role in the enablement of renewable resources. Nowadays, Pt-based nanocrystals (NCs) have been identified as one class of the most promising candidates to efficiently catalyze both the half-reactions in hydrogen- and hydrocarbon-based fuel cells. Here, we thoroughly discuss the key achievement in developing shape-controlled Pt and Pt-based NCs, and their electrochemical applications in fuel cells. We begin with a mechanistic discussion on how the morphology can be precisely controlled in a colloidal system, followed by highlighting the advanced development of shape-controlled Pt, Pt-alloy, Pt-based core@shell NCs, Pt-based nanocages, and Pt-based intermetallic compounds. We then select some case studies on models of typical reactions (oxygen reduction reaction at the cathode and small molecular oxidation reaction at the anode) that are enhanced by the shape-controlled Pt-based nanocatalysts. Finally, we provide an outlook on the potential challenges of shape-controlled nanocatalysts and envision their perspective with suggestions.

In Cellulo Bioorthogonal Catalysis by Encapsulated Nanoalloys: Overcoming Intracellular Deactivation

Bioorthogonal metallocatalysis has opened up a xenobiotic route to perform nonenzymatic catalytic transformations in living settings. Despite their promising features, most metals are deactivated inside cells by a myriad of reactive biomolecules, including biogenic thiols, thereby limiting the catalytic functioning of these abiotic reagents. Here we report the development of cytocompatible alloyed AuPd nanoparticles with the capacity to elicit bioorthogonal depropargylations with high efficiency in biological media. We also show that the intracellular catalytic performance of these nanoalloys is significantly enhanced by protecting them following two different encapsulation methods. Encapsulation in mesoporous silica nanorods resulted in augmented catalyst reactivity, whereas the use of a biodegradable PLGA matrix increased nanoalloy delivery across the cell membrane. The functional potential of encapsulated AuPd was demonstrated by releasing the potent chemotherapy drug paclitaxel inside cancer cells. Nanoalloy encapsulation provides a novel methodology to develop nanoreactors capable of mediating new-to-life reactions in cells.

Toward Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation Reaction: Longstanding Debates and Emerging Catalysts

The study of direct methanol fuel cells (DMFCs) has lasted around 70 years, since the first investigation in the early 1950s. Though enormous effort has been devoted in this field, it is still far from commercialization. The methanol oxidation reaction (MOR), as a semi-reaction of DMFCs, is the bottleneck reaction that restricts the overall performance of DMFCs. To date, there has been intense debate on the complex six-electron reaction, but barely any reviews have systematically discussed this topic. To this end, the controversies and progress regarding the electrocatalytic mechanisms, performance evaluations as well as the design science toward MOR electrocatalysts are summarized. This review also provides a comprehensive introduction on the recent development of emerging MOR electrocatalysts with a focus on the innovation of the alloy, core-shell structure, heterostructure, and single-atom catalysts. Finally, perspectives on the future outlook toward study of the mechanisms and design of electrocatalysts are provided.

Advances in Low Pt Loading Membrane Electrode Assembly for Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cells

Hydrogen has the potential to be one of the solutions that can address environmental pollution and greenhouse emissions from traditional fossil fuels. However, high costs hinder its large-scale commercialization, particularly for enabling devices such as proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs). The precious metal Pt is indispensable in boosting the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in cathode electrocatalysts from the most crucial component, i.e., the membrane electrode assembly (MEA). MEAs account for a considerable amount of the entire cost of PEMFCs. To address these bottlenecks, researchers either increase Pt utilization efficiency or produce MEAs with enhanced performance but less Pt. Only a few reviews that explain the approaches are available. This review summarizes advances in designing nanocatalysts and optimizing the catalyst layer structure to achieve low-Pt loading MEAs. Different strategies and their corresponding effectiveness, e.g., performance in half-cells or MEA, are summarized and compared. Finally, future directions are discussed and proposed, aiming at affordable, highly active, and durable PEMFCs.

Intermetallic Nanocrystals: Seed-Mediated Synthesis and Applications in Electrocatalytic Reduction Reactions

In recent years, intermetallic nanocrystals (IMNCs) have attracted extensive attention in the field of electrocatalysis. However, precise control over the size, shape, composition, structure, and exposed crystal facet of IMNCs seems to be a challenge to the traditional method of high-temperature annealing although these parameters have a significant effect on the electrocatalytic performance. Controllable synthesis of IMNCs by the wet chemistry method in the liquid phase shows great potential compared with the traditional high-temperature annealing method. In this Review, we attempt to summarize the preparation of IMNCs by the seed-mediated synthesis in the liquid phase, as well as their applications in electrocatalytic reduction reactions. Several representative examples are purposely selected for highlighting the huge potential of the seed-mediated synthesis approach in chemical synthesis. Specifically, we personally perceive the seed-mediated synthesis approach as a promising tool in the future for precise control over the size, shape, composition, structure, and exposed crystal facet of IMNCs.

Colorimetric Sensor Based on Ag-Fe NTs for H2S Sensing

Meat waste is widely associated with spoilage caused by microbial growth and metabolism. Volatile compounds produced by microbial growth such as volatile sulfides could directly indicate the freshness of meat during distribution and storage. Herein, silver-iron nanotriangles (Ag-Fe NTs) for hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) detection were developed via one-pot facile reflux reactions. The Ag-Fe NTs were integrated into food packaging systems for the rapid, real-time, and nondestructive detection of the freshness of chilled broiler poultry. The principle of color development is that an increase in the volatile sulfide content leads to a change in the absorption wavelength caused by the etching of the Ag-Fe NTs, resulting in a color change (yellow to brown). The minimum H₂S concentrations detected by the naked eye and UV-vis spectrophotometer were 4 and 2 mg/m³, respectively. This label is economical and practical and can monitor the spoilage of chilled broiler meat products in real-time.

Small molecule-assisted synthesis of carbon supported platinum intermetallic fuel cell catalysts

Supported ordered intermetallic compounds exhibit superior catalytic performance over their disordered alloy counterparts in diverse reactions. But the synthesis of intermetallic compounds catalysts often requires high-temperature annealing that leads to the sintering of metals into larger crystallites. Herein, we report a small molecule-assisted impregnation approach to realize the general synthesis of a family of intermetallic catalysts, consisting of 18 binary platinum intermetallic compounds supported on carbon blacks. The molecular additives containing heteroatoms (that is, O, N, or S) can be coordinated with platinum in impregnation and thermally converted into heteroatom-doped graphene layers in high-temperature annealing, which significantly suppress alloy sintering and insure the formation of small-sized intermetallic catalysts. The prepared optimal PtCo intermetallics as cathodic oxygen-reduction catalysts exhibit a high mass activity of 1.08 A mg_Pt^-1 at 0.9 V in H₂-O₂ fuel cells and a rated power density of 1.17 W cm^-2 in H₂-air fuel cells.

High-Entropy Intermetallic PtRhBiSnSb Nanoplates for Highly Efficient Alcohol Oxidation Electrocatalysis

The control of multimetallic ensembles at the atomic-level is challenging, especially for high-entropy alloys (HEAs) possessing five or more elements. Herein, the one-pot synthesis of hexagonal-close-packed (hcp) PtRhBiSnSb high-entropy intermetallic (HEI) nanoplates with intrinsically isolated Pt, Rh, Bi, Sn, and Sb atoms is reported, to boost the electrochemical oxidation of liquid fuels. Taking advantage of these combined five metals, the well-defined PtRhBiSnSb HEI nanoplates exhibit a remarkable mass activity of 19.529, 15.558, and 7.535 A mg^-1 _Pt+Rh toward the electrooxidation of methanol, ethanol, and glycerol in alkaline electrolytes, respectively, representing a state-of-the-art multifunctional electrocatalyst for alcohol oxidation reactions. In particular, the PtRhBiSnSb HEI achieves record-high methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) activity in an alkaline environment. Theoretical calculations demonstrate that the introduction of the fifth metal Rh enhances the electron-transfer efficiency in PtRhBiSnSb HEI nanoplates, which contributes to the improved oxidation capability. Meanwhile, robust electronic structures of the active sites are achieved due to the synergistic protections from Bi, Sn, and Sb sites. This work offers significant research advances in developing well-defined HEA with delicate control over compositions and properties.

Co-digestive ripening assisted phase-controlled synthesis of Ag-Sn intermetallic nanoparticles and their dye degradation activity

The Ag-Sn based system in the nano-size regime is one of the strongest candidates for lead-free solders. Besides, the investigation of several other applications of Ag-Sn nanostructures, especially in catalysis, remains scarce which makes it an interesting system to synthesize and explore its chemistry. In this report, nearly monodisperse ε-Ag₃Sn intermetallic nanoparticles were prepared by a simple and convenient solution-based process of co-digestive ripening using Ag and Sn colloids obtained by the solvated metal atom dispersion (SMAD) method. Optimization of the temperature and stoichiometric ratio between the metal elements and the use of an appropriate capping agent are crucial factors to realise phase pure intermetallic nanoparticles. Ag₃Sn nanoparticles with a size of 3.8 nm ± 0.6 nm were obtained within 12 h of reaction when tri-n-octylphosphine/tri-n-octylphosphine oxide was used as the capping agent at 205 °C. Interestingly, Ag₃Sn@SnO_x core-shell nanostructures were obtained by changing the capping agent to palmitic acid. These nanostructures were thoroughly characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM and STEM-EDS), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and optical spectroscopy. Thereafter, Ag and Ag₃Sn nanoparticles were utilized for photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue, methyl orange and a mixture of both the dyes.

Machine Learning for Electrocatalyst and Photocatalyst Design and Discovery

Electrocatalysts and photocatalysts are key to a sustainable future, generating clean fuels, reducing the impact of global warming, and providing solutions to environmental pollution. Improved processes for catalyst design and a better understanding of electro/photocatalytic processes are essential for improving catalyst effectiveness. Recent advances in data science and artificial intelligence have great potential to accelerate electrocatalysis and photocatalysis research, particularly the rapid exploration of large materials chemistry spaces through machine learning. Here a comprehensive introduction to, and critical review of, machine learning techniques used in electrocatalysis and photocatalysis research are provided. Sources of electro/photocatalyst data and current approaches to representing these materials by mathematical features are described, the most commonly used machine learning methods summarized, and the quality and utility of electro/photocatalyst models evaluated. Illustrations of how machine learning models are applied to novel electro/photocatalyst discovery and used to elucidate electrocatalytic or photocatalytic reaction mechanisms are provided. The review offers a guide for materials scientists on the selection of machine learning methods for electrocatalysis and photocatalysis research. The application of machine learning to catalysis science represents a paradigm shift in the way advanced, next-generation catalysts will be designed and synthesized.

Breaking with the Principles of Coreduction to Form Stoichiometric Intermetallic PdCu Nanoparticles

Intermetallic nanoparticles (NPs) have shown enhanced catalytic properties as compared to their disordered alloy counterparts. To advance their use in green energy, it is crucial to understand what controls the formation of intermetallic NPs over alloy structures. By carefully selecting the additives used in NP synthesis, it is here shown that monodisperse, intermetallic PdCu NPs can be synthesized in a controllable manner. Introducing the additives iron(III) chloride and ascorbic acid, both morphological and structural control can be achieved. Combined, these additives provide a synergetic effect resulting in precursor reduction and defect-free growth; ultimately leading to monodisperse, single-crystalline, intermetallic PdCu NPs. Using in situ X-ray total scattering, a hitherto unknown transformation pathway is reported that diverges from the commonly reported coreduction disorder-order transformation. A Cu-rich structure initially forms, which upon the incorporation of Pd(0) and atomic ordering forms intermetallic PdCu NPs. These findings underpin that formation of stoichiometric intermetallic NPs is not limited by standard reduction potential matching and coreduction mechanisms, but is instead driven by changes in the local chemistry. Ultimately, using the local chemistry as a handle to tune the NP structure might open new opportunities to expand the library of intermetallic NPs by exploiting synthesis by design.

The Factors Dictating Properties of Atomically Precise Metal Nanocluster Electrocatalysts

Metal nanoparticles occupy an important position in electrocatalysis. Unfortunately, by using conventional synthetic methodology, it is a great challenge to realize the monodisperse composition/structure of metal nanoparticles at the atomic level, and to establish correlations between the catalytic properties and the structure of individual catalyst particles. For the study of well-defined nanocatalysts, great advances have been made for the successful synthesis of nanoparticles with atomic precision, notably ligand-passivated metal nanoclusters. Such well-defined metal nanoclusters have become a type of model catalyst and have shown great potential in catalysis research. In this review, the authors summarize the advances in the utilization of atomically precise metal nanoclusters for electrocatalysis. In particular, the factors (e.g., size, metal doping/alloying, ligand engineering, support materials as well as charge state of clusters) affecting selectivity and activity of catalysts are highlighted. The authors aim to provide insightful guidelines for the rational design of electrocatalysts with high performance and perspectives on potential challenges and opportunities in this emerging field.

Unraveling the electronegativity-dominated intermediate adsorption on high-entropy alloy electrocatalysts

High-entropy alloys have received considerable attention in the field of catalysis due to their exceptional properties. However, few studies hitherto focus on the origin of their outstanding performance and the accurate identification of active centers. Herein, we report a conceptual and experimental approach to overcome the limitations of single-element catalysts by designing a FeCoNiXRu (X: Cu, Cr, and Mn) High-entropy alloys system with various active sites that have different adsorption capacities for multiple intermediates. The electronegativity differences between mixed elements in HEA induce significant charge redistribution and create highly active Co and Ru sites with optimized energy barriers for simultaneously stabilizing OH^* and H^* intermediates, which greatly enhances the efficiency of water dissociation in alkaline conditions. This work provides an in-depth understanding of the interactions between specific active sites and intermediates, which opens up a fascinating direction for breaking scaling relation issues for multistep reactions.

Disentangling Electronic and Geometric Effects in Electrocatalysis through Substitution in Isostructural Intermetallic Compounds

Efficient development of catalytic materials requires knowledge of the decisive parameters defining the catalytic properties. In multicomponent metallic catalysts, these are categorized as electronic and geometric effects, yet they are strongly interrelated. A systematic disentanglement can be achieved by fixing one parameter while altering the other, which becomes possible through the substitution in isostructural intermetallic compounds. This approach enables the evaluation of electronic or geometric contributions both individually and combined. Herein, this is achieved by substitution of indium (three valence electrons) with tin (four valence electrons) in the series In_1-xSn_xPd₂, which allows for a systematic variation of the total number of electrons per unit cell with only a minor variation of the unit cell parameters and thus the evaluation of the electronic effect. Geometric effects were evaluated by substitution of indium with gallium in the Ga_1-xIn_xPd₂ series, which allows for a systematic variation of the interatomic distances while maintaining the same number of valence electrons per unit cell and close atomic coordinates. By substituting gallium with tin in the Ga_1-xSn_xPd₂ series, both effects are combined and addressed simultaneously. The activity enhancement of the methanol oxidation reaction on the Ga_1-xSn_xPd₂ series is attributed to the synergy of the combined effects.

Ordering Degree-Dependent Activity of Pt3M (M = Fe, Mn) Intermetallic Nanoparticles for Electrocatalytic Methanol Oxidation

Atomically ordered intermetallic alloys with unique electronic and geometrical structures are highly attractive for heterogeneous catalysis and electrocatalysis. However, the formation of intermetallic phases generally requires high-temperature annealing to overcome the kinetic energy barrier of atom ordering, which unfortunately causes high material heterogeneity and thus makes it challenging to identify the exact contribution of ordered structures to the improved performance. Here, we prepared a family of small-sized intermetallic core/shell Pt₃M@Pt (M = Mn or Fe) catalysts with varied ordering degree by a high-temperature sulfur-confined method. We identified a strong correlation between the ordering degree of the intermetallic Pt₃M core of the catalysts and their electrocatalytic activity for the methanol oxidation reaction. Density functional theory calculations show that the intermetallic Pt₃M core induces a compressive strain on the Pt-skin, which weakens the CO* binding, lowers the free energy change from CO* to COOH*, and therefore promotes electrocatalytic methanol oxidation.

A General Concurrent Template Strategy for Ordered Mesoporous Intermetallic Nanoparticles with Controllable Catalytic Performance

We report a general concurrent template strategy for precise synthesis of mesoporous Pt-/Pd-based intermetallic nanoparticles with desired morphology and ordered mesostructure. The concurrent template not only supplies a mesoporous metal seed for re-crystallization growth of atomically ordered intermetallic phases with unique atomic stoichiometry but also provides a nanoconfinement environment for nanocasting synthesis of mesoporous nanoparticles with ordered mesostructure and rhombic dodecahedral morphology under elevated temperature. Using the selective hydrogenation of 3-nitrophenylacetylene as a proof-of-concept catalytic reaction, mesoporous intermetallic PtSn nanoparticles exhibited remarkably controllable intermetallic phase-dependent catalytic selectivity and excellent catalytic stability. This work provides a very powerful strategy for precise preparation of ordered mesoporous intermetallic nanocrystals for application in selective catalysis and fuel cell electrocatalysis.

Composition-dependent ordering transformations in Pt-Fe nanoalloys

SignificanceDynamically understanding the microscopic processes governing ordering transformations has rarely been attained. The situation becomes even more challenging for nanoscale alloys, where the significantly increased surface-area-to-volume ratio not only opens up a variety of additional freedoms to initiate an ordering transformation but also allows for kinetic interplay between the surface and bulk due to their close proximity. We provide direct evidence of the microscopic processes controlling the ordering transformation through the surface-bulk interplay in Pt-Fe nanoalloys and new features rendered by variations in alloy composition and chemical stimuli. These results provide a mechanistic detail of ordering transformation phenomena which are widely relevant to nanoalloys as chemical ordering occurs in most multicomponent materials under suitable environmental bias.

Nanoporous Intermetallic SnTe Enables Efficient Electrochemical CO2 Reduction into Formate via Promoting the Fracture of Metal-Oxygen Bonding

Electrochemical reduction of CO₂ into formate product is considered the most practical significance link in the carbon cycle. Developing cheap and efficient electrocatalysts with high selectivity for formate on a wide operated potential window is desirable yet challenging. Herein, nanoporous ordered intermetallic tin-tellurium (SnTe) is synthesized with a greater reduction performance for electrochemical CO₂ to formate reduction compared to bare Sn. This nanoporous SnTe achieves 93% Faradaic efficiency for formate production and maintains over 90% Faradaic efficiency at a wide voltage range from -1.0 to -1.3 V versus reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), together with 60 h stability. Combining operando Raman spectroscopy studies with density functional theory calculations reveals that strong orbital interaction between Sn and neighboring tellurium (Te) in the intermetallic SnTe can lower the barriers of the oxygen cutoff hydrogenation and desorption steps by promoting the fracture of bond between metal and oxygen, leading to the significant enhancement of formate production.

Noble Metal-Based Multimetallic Nanoparticles for Electrocatalytic Applications

Noble metal-based multimetallic nanoparticles (NMMNs) have attracted great attention for their multifunctional and synergistic effects, which offer numerous catalytic applications. Combined experimental and theoretical studies have enabled formulation of various design principles for tuning the electrocatalytic performance through controlling size, composition, morphology, and crystal structure of the nanoparticles. Despite significant advancements in the field, the chemical synthesis of NMMNs with ideal characteristics for catalysis, including high activity, stability, product-selectivity, and scalability is still challenging. This review provides an overview on structure-based classification and the general synthesis of NMMN electrocatalysts. Furthermore, postsynthetic treatments, such as the removal of surfactants to optimize the activity, and utilization of NMMNs onto suitable support for practical electrocatalytic applications are highlighted. In the end, future direction and challenges associated with the electrocatalysis of NMMNs are covered.

Toward the Continuous Production of Multigram Quantities of Highly Uniform Supported Metallic Nanoparticles and Their Application for Synthesis of Superior Intermetallic Pt-Alloy ORR Electrocatalysts

A fast and facile pulse combustion (PC) method that allows for the continuous production of multigram quantities of high-metal-loaded and highly uniform supported metallic nanoparticles (SMNPs) is presented. Namely, various metal on carbon (M/C) composites have been prepared by using only three feedstock components: water, metal-salt, and the supporting material. The present approach can be elegantly utilized also for numerous other applications in electrocatalysis, heterogeneous catalysis, and sensors. In this study, the PC-prepared M/C composites were used as metal precursors for the Pt NPs deposition using double passivation with the galvanic displacement method (DP method). Lastly, by using thin-film rotating disc electrode (TF-RDE) and gas-diffusion electrode (GDE) methodologies, we show that the synergistic effects of combining PC technology with the DP method enable production of superior intermetallic Pt-M electrocatalysts with an improved oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) performance when compared to a commercial Pt-Co electrocatalyst for proton exchange membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) application.

Intermetallic Nanocatalyst for Highly Active Heterogeneous Hydroformylation

Hydroformylation is an imperative chemical process traditionally catalyzed by homogeneous catalysts. Designing a heterogeneous catalyst with high activity and selectivity in hydroformylation is challenging but essential to allow the convenient separation and recycling of precious catalysts. Here, we report the development of an outstanding catalyst for efficient heterogeneous hydroformylation, RhZn intermetallic nanoparticles. In the hydroformylation of styrene, it shows three times higher turnover frequency (3090 h^-1) compared to the benchmark homogeneous Wilkinson's catalyst (966 h^-1), as well as a high chemoselectivity toward aldehyde products. RhZn is active for a variety of olefin substrates and can be recycled without a significant loss of activity. Density functional theory calculations show that the RhZn surfaces reduce the binding strength of reaction intermediates and have lower hydroformylation activation energy barriers compared to pure Rh(111), leading to more favorable reaction energetics on RhZn. The calculations also predict potential catalyst design strategies to achieve high regioselectivity.

Ordered PtFeIr Intermetallic Nanowires Prepared through a Silica-Protection Strategy for the Oxygen Reduction Reaction

Developing efficient and stable Pt-based oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) catalysts is a way to promote the large-scale application of fuel cells. Pt-based alloy nanowires are promising ORR catalysts, but their application is hampered by activity loss caused by structural destruction during long-term cycling. Herein, the preparation of ordered PtFeIr intermetallic nanowire catalysts with an average diameter of 2.6 nm and face-centered tetragonal structure (fct-PtFeIr/C) is reported. A silica-protected strategy prevents the deformation of PtFeIr nanowires during the phase transition at high temperature. The as-prepared fct-PtFeIr/C exhibited superior mass activity for ORR (2.03 A mg_Pt ^-1 ) than disordered PtFeIr nanowires with face-centered cubic structure (1.11 A mg_Pt ^-1 ) and commercial Pt/C (0.21 A mg_Pt ^-1 ). Importantly, the structure and electrochemical performance of fct-PtFeIr/C were maintained after stability tests, showing the advantages of the ordered structure.
