Abstract
Novel styryl colorants based on anchoring methoxy with anthracene as a donor linked with various active methylene acceptor groups to derive a conjugated π-system along with push-pull geometry were synthesized and well characterized. Photophysical properties were studied in different polarity solvents. The impact of solvent polarizability is delivered in redshifts in absorption and emission spectra, in addition to enhancing the quantum yield. The benzoxazole and benzimidazole moieties in 4c and 4d demonstrated heat stability of more than 300 °C. Fluorescent intensity is directly proportional to the viscosity and 4a demonstrates a notable viscosity sensor through 1.36 fold increase in intensity. In comparison to other styryl dyes, 4c and 4d were shown to have higher values in DMSO for polarizability (53.3496 × 10-24 esu and 53.7459 × 10-24 esu) and first-order hyperpolarizability (86.3467 × 10-30 esu and 89.1941 × 10-30 esu) as well as second-order hyperpolarizability (1768.9121 × 10-36 esu and 1740.6940 × 10-36 esu) due to presence of heterocyclic character. NLO properties of all the styryl dyes 4a-4e are within the fundamental boundary limits. The 4d (benzoxazole) dye exhibited a small HOMO-LUMO energy gap of 2.8825 eV, whereas the 4b and 4e dyes had a larger band gap due to the presence of a carbonyl group.

Bis-Ortho-Donor-Modification of Boracyclic π-Electron Systems beyond Steric Protection to Produce Thermally Activated Delayed Fluorescence Materials. Angew Chem Int Ed Engl 2024; 63:e202405412. Abstract
Polycyclic π-conjugated compounds that contain tricoordinate boron atoms at their periphery represent an attractive class of materials with electron-accepting character. Their molecular design generally requires the introduction of a bulky aryl group onto the boron atom, where it provides predominantly kinetic stabilization. The addition of extra functionality to the aryl group on the boron atom can be expected to further expand the potential utility of this class of materials. Herein, we report the synthesis of a series of boracyclic π-conjugated molecules with firm ortho B⋅⋅⋅N nonbonding interactions by introducing N-containing electron-donors at the ortho-positions of the aryl group on the boron atom. X-ray crystallographic analysis revealed that the combination of a planar boracyclic π-skeleton with only sp2 carbons and a strong electron-donating phenothiazine moiety results in a particularly short B⋅⋅⋅N distance. Theoretical study provided insights into the inherent nature of the B⋅⋅⋅N interaction. Owing to their donor-acceptor (D-A) structures, these molecules exhibit substantially red-shifted fluorescence in solution, albeit that the fluorescence quantum yields (ΦF) are low. In contrast, when incorporated into films, these compounds exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) with improved ΦF values. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) fabricated using the ortho-donor-substituted derivatives exhibit orange-red electroluminescence.

Abstract
Successful synthesis has been reported of 4-Mes2B-3,5-(CF3)2PzH and 4-Mes2B-3,5-(CF3)2PzH bearing sterically demanding diarylboron moieties at the pyrazole ring 4-position, and their corresponding copper(I) pyrazolate complexes. They show visible blue photoluminescence in solution. The X-ray crystal structures revealed that the fluorinated {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 crystallizes as discrete trinuclear molecules whereas as the non-fluorinated {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CH3)2Pz]Cu}3 forms dimers of trimers with two close inter-trimer Cu⋯Cu separations. The solid {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CF3)2Pz]Cu}3 featuring a sterically confined Cu3N6 core displays bright blue phosphorescence while {[4-BMes2-3,5-(CH3)2Pz]Cu}3, which is a dimer of a trimer, is a red phosphor at room temperature. This work illustrates the modulation of photo-physical properties of metal pyrazolates by adjusting the supporting ligand steric features and introducing secondary diarylboron luminophores. Computational analysis of the structures and photophysical properties of copper complexes are also presented.

Abstract
Donor-π-acceptor fluorophores that consist of an electron-donating amino group and an electron-accepting triarylborane moiety generally exhibit substantial solvatochromism in their fluorescence while retaining high fluorescence quantum yields even in polar media. Herein, we report a new family of this compound class, which bears ortho-P(=X)R2 -substituted phenyl groups (X=O or S) as a photodissociative module. The P=X moiety that intramolecularly coordinates to the boron atom undergoes dissociation in the excited state, giving rise to dual emission from the corresponding tetra- and tricoordinate boron species. The susceptibility of the systems to photodissociation depends on the coordination ability of the P=O and P=S moieties, whereby the latter facilitates dissociation. The intensity ratios of the dual emission bands are sensitive to environmental parameters, including temperature, solution polarity, and the viscosity of the medium. Moreover, precise tuning of the P(=X)R2 group and the electron-donating amino moiety led to single-molecule white emission in solution.

Abstract
Development of new n-type semiconductors with tunable band gap and dielectric constant has significant implication in dissociating bound charge carrier relevant for demonstrating high performance optoelectronic devices. Boron-β-thioketonates (MTDKB), analogues to boron-β-diketonates containing a sulfur atom in the framework of β-diketones were synthesized. Bulk transport measurement exhibited an outstanding bulk electron mobility of ≈0.003 cm2 V-1 s-1 , which is among the best values reported till date in these class of semiconducting materials and correspondingly a single junction photo responsivity of upto 6 mA W-1 was obtained. This new family of O,S-chelated boron compounds exhibited luminescence in the far red/near-infrared region. The remarkable red shift of 89 nm (fluorescence) observed for 4 a in comparison with analogues boron-β-diketonate signifies the importance of sulfur in these molecules. MTDKBs with amine functionality have also been investigated as an ON/OFF fluorescent sensor.

Abstract
We report here a set of triaryl pyrazole based B-N coordinated boron compounds ( 11 - 17 ) synthesized by electrophilic aromatic borylation strategy. All the pyrazole boron compounds were thoroughly characterized using multinuclear NMR spectroscopy, LCMS, and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis (for 12 - 17 ). The photoluminescence measurements of 11 - 17 revealed that the emission peak maxima were tuned based on the substitution on Nphenyl. The photophysical and electrochemical properties were further supported by theoretical calculations. Z-scan based investigations at 515 nm pump wavelength showed that B-N coordination led to enhancement of nonlinear absorption (two-photon absorption (TPA)) in these compounds if an electron deficient moiety is attached. It has also been observed that an appropriate choice of moiety allows to optimally maneuver the molecular polarizability of the π-system and consequently, assists in controlling the third-order nonlinear optical response.

Abstract
Triarylborane (Ar3B) and triarylamine (Ar3N) have been widely employed to construct electronically different donor-acceptor (D-A) systems. Herein, we describe a series of A-D-A-type luminescent organoboranes L-B2Nn (n = 1, 3, 5) that show an increased number of Ar3N units as electron donors and two terminal Ar3B as acceptors. When the Ar3N moieties were extended from one to five units, their electron-donating strength was gradually enhanced and the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO)-lowest unoccupied molecular orbital (LUMO) energy gaps could also be tuned, which was further reflected in the red-shifted emissions from blue (λem = 458 nm) to orange (λem = 595 nm) with a decrease in Egap(elect) from 3.19 to 2.61 eV. L-B2N5 showed a huge Stokes shift (∼14 057 cm-1) and a considerably bright emission with an enhanced solid-state quantum efficiency (ΦS = 98%) compared with the other members. L-B2N3 and L-B2N5 exhibited aggregation-induced emissions (AIEs), and an apparent solvatochromic shift was also observed in the emission spectra as the solvent was changed from hexane to tetrahydrofuran (THF) (430 → 595 nm). In addition, the donor-acceptor charge-transfer character in these organoboranes caused a thermally responsive emission over a broad range.

Abstract
Two novel D-π-A fluorophores based on selenopheno[3,2-b]thiophene, possessing triphenylamine and 4,4'-dimethoxytriphenylamine units as donors and dimesitylborane as an acceptor, linked through a π-conjugated thiophene spacer (BTPAST and BOMeTPAST, respectively) were synthesized. Their photophysical properties were investigated in both solution and the state of aggregation and compared to those of their corresponding donor parts, having no dimesitylborane units (TPAST and OMeTPAST). All the compounds displayed large Stokes shifts between 100 and 140 nm with positive solvatochromism in solvents having different polarities. While BTPAST displayed both aggregation induced emission (AIE) and twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) characteristics, the others preponderated with TICT effects. The sensing abilities of BTPAST and BOMeTPAST towards different anions were studied. Both exhibited chromogenic and fluorogenic responses to small anions such as fluoride and cyanide, for which the detection limits were found to be 0.12 and 2.43 ppm with BTPAST and 0.59 and 0.92 ppm with BOMeTPAST, respectively. These results provide guidance for the development of novel fused selenophenothiophene sensors in the field of anion sensing.

Abstract
The title compound, C20H24BNO2, has a polarized π-system due to significant resonance between the N—C(H)=C(H)—B and ionic N+=C(H)—C(H)=B− canonical forms. The dihedral angles between the NC2B plane (r.m.s. deviation 0.0223 Å) and the C3N (r.m.s. deviation 0.0025 Å) and BCO2 (r.m.s. deviation 0.0044 Å) planes are 2.51 (12) and 3.09 (19)°, respectively. This indicates the lone pair of the nitrogen atom and a vacant p orbital of the boron atom are conjugated with the central C=C bond. In comparison with the carbazole analogue [Hatayama & Okuno (2012). Acta Cryst. E68, o84], the C—N and C—B bonds are shorter. The results are well explained by the increase in the contribution of the N+=C(H)—C(H)=B− canonical form in the title compound.

Abstract
Triarylboranes have drawn much attention in OLEDs owing to their remarkable solid-state luminescence properties. Here two new A-D-A type compounds, 2,7-bis(dimesitylboryl)-N-ethyl-carbazole (BCz) using triarylborane as electron acceptor and carbazole as electron donor while 2,7-bis((4-(dimesitylboryl)phenyl)ethynyl)-9-ethyl-carbazole (BPACz) using phenylacetylene as extra conjugated bridge, have been synthesized and their photoluminescence related properties in various states have been investigated both experimentally and theoretically. Both compounds show blue emission with high quantum yields, being potential candidates for blue OLED materials.

Abstract
The construction of thiophene-fused analogues of diboraanthracenes with different aryl substituents through boron-mercury exchange followed by the nucleophilic replacement of the chlorines of dichlorodiboradithiophene 2 with Grignard reagents is reported. These diboradithiophenes exhibited unusual photophysical and electrochemical properties. They all undergo photoisomerisation, which can be traced using photophysical and 1H NMR spectroscopy studies.

Abstract
Circularly polarized luminescence (CPL) has shown promising application potentials in 3D display, optical data storage, smart sensors/probers, CPL lasers, and light source for asymmetric photosynthesis. In the last decade, the CPL-active small organic molecules (CPL-SOMs) have attracted rapidly increasing research interest owing to the great advantages of SOMs, such as high luminescence efficiency, facile modification of chemical structure, fine emission wavelength tuning, precise relationships between structure and properties, and as well as easy fabrication. Promoted by the unique effects of boryl group, such as strong electron-accepting ability, great steric effect, and Lewis acidity to bind with Lewis bases, we herein summarized our recent research results about the creation of CPL-SOMs by modification of chiral scaffolds, such as [2.2]paracyclophane, [5]/[7]helicene, and binaphthyl, with boryl group. The preliminary results have well demonstrated that the chiral triarylborane-based SOMs exhibit promising CPL properties, such as intense CPL in combination of high luminescence dissymmetry factor (|glum |) with high fluorescence efficiency, solvent-induced sign inversion, facile emission wavelength tuning, high fluorescence efficiency in the solid, and substituent-induced sign inversion.

Abstract
One-electron chemical reduction of 10-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolylbenzo[c]phenanthrene-4-amine (3-B(Mes)2-[4]helix-9-N(p-Tol)2) 1 and 13-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolyldibenzo[c,g]phenanthrene-8-amine (3-B(Mes)2-[5]helix-12-N(p-Tol)2) 2 gives rise to monoanions with extensive delocalization over the annulated helicene rings and the boron p z orbital. Two-electron chemical reduction of 1 and 2 produces open-shell biradicaloid dianions with temperature-dependent population of the triplet states due to small singlet-triplet gaps. These results have been confirmed by single-crystal X-ray diffraction, EPR and UV/vis-NIR spectroscopy, and DFT calculations.

Abstract
A novel and convenient methodology for the one-pot synthesis of sterically congested triarylboranes by using bench-stable aryltrifluoroborates as the boron source is reported. This procedure gives systematic access to symmetrically and unsymmetrically substituted triarylboranes of the types BAr2 Ar' and BArAr'Ar'', respectively. Three unsymmetrically substituted triarylboranes as well as their iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation products are reported. These borylated triarylboranes contain one to three positions that can subsequently be orthogonally functionalized in follow-up reactions, such as Suzuki-Miyaura cross-couplings or Sonogashira couplings.

Abstract
Bis(1-(4-tolyl)-carboran-2-yl)-(4-tolyl)-borane [(1-(4-MeC6 H4 )-closo-1,2-C2 B10 H10 -2-)2 (4-MeC6 H4 )B] (1), a new bis(o-carboranyl)-(R)-borane was synthesised by lithiation of the o-carboranyl precursor and subsequent salt metathesis reaction with (4-tolyl)BBr2 . Cyclic voltammetry experiments on 1 show multiple distinct reduction events with a one-electron first reduction. In a selective reduction experiment the corresponding paramagnetic radical anion 1.- was isolated and characterized. Single-crystal structure analyses allow an in-depth comparison of 1, 1.- , their calculated geometries, and the S1 excited state of 1. Photophysical studies of 1 show a charge transfer (CT) emission with low quantum yield in solution but a strong increase in the solid state. TD-DFT calculations were used to identify transition-relevant orbitals.

Abstract
Functional materials composed of Boron-chalcogenophene conjugates have emerged as promising ensemble featuring commendable optoelectronic properties. This review describes the categories, synthetic routes and optoelectronic applications of a range of boron-chalcogenophene conjugates. Conjugation and linking of different types of tri- and tetra-coordinated boron moieties with chalcogenophenes have remained an important strategy for constructing a range of functional materials. Synthetic protocols have been devised to efficiently prepare such chemically robust conjugates, often exhibiting a myriad of photophysical properties, redox capabilities and also solid-state behaviors. Tin-boron and silicon-boron exchange protocols have been efficiently adapted to access these boron-chalcogenophenes. Few other commonly used methods namely, hydroboration of alkynes as well as electrophilic borylations are also mentioned. The chemical and electronic properties of such boron-chalcogenophene conjugates are directly influenced by the strong Lewis acid character of trivalent boranes which can further alter the intra- and inter- molecular Lewis acid-base interactions. Apart from the synthetic protocols, recent advances in the application of these boron-chalcogenophene conjugates towards analyte sensing, organic electronics, molecular switches and several other aspects will be discussed in this review.

Abstract
The use of donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) skeletons is an effective strategy for the design of fluorophores with red-shifted emission. In particular, the use of amino and boryl moieties as the electron-donating and -accepting groups, respectively, can produce dyes that exhibit high fluorescence and solvatochromism. Herein, we introduce a dithienophosphole P-oxide scaffold as an acceptor-spacer to produce a boryl- and amino-substituted donor-acceptor-acceptor (D-A-A) π-system. The thus obtained fluorophores exhibit emission in the near-infrared (NIR) region, while maintaining high fluorescence quantum yields even in polar solvents (e.g. λ em = 704 nm and Φ F = 0.69 in CH3CN). A comparison of these compounds with their formyl- or cyano-substituted counterparts demonstrated the importance of the boryl group for generating intense emission. The differences among these electron-accepting substituents were examined in detail using theoretical calculations, which revealed the crucial role of the boryl group in lowering the nonradiative decay rate constant by decreasing the non-adiabatic coupling in the internal conversion process. The D-A-A framework was further fine-tuned to improve the photostability. One of these D-A-A dyes was successfully used in bioimaging to visualize the blood vessels of Japanese medaka larvae and mouse brain.

Abstract
Herein, we report the synthesis and electrochemical and photophysical properties of aromatic hydrocarbons having one or two dimesitylborylethynyl peripherals. The mono- (1) and diboryl compounds (2), readily prepared by nucleophilic substitution reaction, are fairly stable to air and moisture in the solid state. The inserted ethynediyl (C≡C) spacer cancels the steric hindrance between the bulky dimesitylboryl groups and aromatic rings, leading to effective π conjugation over the B-C≡C-Ar linkages, as revealed by cyclic voltammetry. Despite the small structural differences, the photophysical properties of the benzene, naphthalene, and anthracene derivatives are different. Virtually no emission was observed from the benzene derivatives, whereas the anthracene derivatives emitted with high quantum yields both in solution and in the solid state. Notably, the naphthalene derivatives showed aggregation-induced emission behavior. Unlike the common sterically congested triarylborane derivatives reported so far, the anthracene derivatives showed π-π*-type absorption and emission bands, which derive from efficient intramolecular orbital interactions between the boron centers and anthracene moieties, as supported by DFT calculations. As a result, the dimesitylborylethynyl substituents effectively lower the LUMO levels of the aromatic hydrocarbon parts, whereas the HOMO levels are almost unaffected, thereby leading to materials with controllable HOMO-LUMO gaps.

Abstract
We report four new luminescent tetracationic bis-triarylborane DNA and RNA sensors that show high binding affinities, in several cases even in the nanomolar range. Three of the compounds contain substituted, highly emissive and structurally flexible bis(2,6-dimethylphenyl-4-ethynyl)arene linkers (3: arene=5,5'-2,2'-bithiophene; 4: arene=1,4-benzene; 5: arene=9,10-anthracene) between the two boryl moieties and serve as efficient dual Raman and fluorescence chromophores. The shorter analogue 6 employs 9,10-anthracene as the linker and demonstrates the importance of an adequate linker length with a certain level of flexibility by exhibiting generally lower binding affinities than 3-5. Pronounced aggregation-deaggregation processes are observed in fluorimetric titration experiments with DNA for compounds 3 and 5. Molecular modelling of complexes of 5 with AT-DNA, suggest the minor groove as the dominant binding site for monomeric 5, but demonstrate that dimers of 5 can also be accommodated. Strong SERS responses for 3-5 versus a very weak response for 6, particularly the strong signals from anthracene itself observed for 5 but not for 6, demonstrate the importance of triple bonds for strong Raman activity in molecules of this compound class. The energy of the characteristic stretching vibration of the C≡C bonds is significantly dependent on the aromatic moiety between the triple bonds. The insertion of aromatic moieties between two C≡C bonds thus offers an alternative design for dual Raman and fluorescence chromophores, applicable in multiplex biological Raman imaging.

Abstract
Using 4-phenylpyridine or 2-phenylpyridine in place of biphenyl, two electron-poor phenylpyridyl-fused boroles, [TipPBB1]4 and TipPBB2 were prepared. [TipPBB1]4 adopts a unique coordination mode and forms a tetramer with a cavity in both the solid state and solution. The boron center of TipPBB2 is 4-coordinate in the solid state but the system dissociates in solution, leading to 3-coordinate borole species. Compared to its borafluorene analogues, the electron-accepting ability of TipPBB2 is largely enhanced by the pyridyl group. TipPBB2 exhibits dual fluorescence in solution due to an equilibrium between free TipPBB2 and a weak intermolecular coordination adduct with a second molecule. This equilibrium was further investigated by low-temperature NMR spectroscopy and photophysical studies. Theoretical studies indicate that the highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) of TipPBB2 localizes at the Tip group, in contrast to its borafluorene derivatives, wherein the HOMOs are localized on the borafluorene cores.

The title compound has a polarized π-system due to resonance between N—C(H)=C(H)—B and ionic N+=C(H)—C(H)=B− canonical structures. In comparison with the previously reported E-isomer, the reduced planarity of Z-isomer results in a decrease of the contribution of the N+=C(H)—C(H)=B− canonical structure. The title compound, C20H22BNO2, has a polarized π-system due to resonance between N—C(H)=C(H)—B and ionic N+=C(H)—C(H)=B− canonical structures. Abstract
Two derivatives of phenylpyridyl-fused boroles were prepared via functionalization of the pyridyl groups, namely to an electron-rich dihydropyridine moiety (compound 1) and an electron-deficient N-methylpyridinium cation (compound 2). Due to strong conjugation between the dihydropyridine moiety and the boron atom, the reduction potential of compound 1 shifts cathodically. In contrast, compound 2 exhibits three reduction processes with a first reversible reduction potential anodically shifted in comparison to its precursor (TipPBB2) or the non-borylated framework 1-methyl-2-phenylpyridin-1-ium triflate (3). The significantly anodically shifted reduction potential indicates the extreme electron deficiency of compound 2, which also leads to the reversible coordination of THF. Photophysical properties of both compounds in different solvents were investigated. Theoretical studies further support the strong conjugation in the ground state of compound 1 and the electron-deficient property of compound 2.

Abstract
Three-coordinated organoboron fluorophores bearing 3,5-diphenyl pyrazoles have been synthesized. The pyrazole anchored boron fluorophores show selective fluorescence quenching response to trinitrophenol (or) picric acid (PA) and have the ability to discriminate picric acid over other analytes. We investigated nonlinear optical (NLO) properties of these three-coordinated organoboron compounds (in solutions) in the presence and absence of PA. In absence of PA, the two-photon-absorption coefficient (β) of organoboron fluorophores exhibits a variation from 2 × 10-12 cm W-1 to 4 × 10-12 cm W-1. The results also reveal that the NLO characteristics of organoboron fluorophores exhibit a discernible variation with PA addition which has correlations with quenching observed in fluorescence measurements.

Abstract
Doubly boron-doped thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters based on a 9,10-diboraanthracene (DBA) acceptor decorated with ortho-donor groups (Cz2oDBA, 2; BuCz2oDBA, 3; DMAC2oDBA, 4) are prepared to realize high-efficiency green-to-red organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). X-ray diffraction analyses of 2 and 4 reveal the symmetrical and highly twisted ortho-donor-acceptor-donor (D-A-D) structure of the emitters. The twisted conformation leads to a very small energy splitting (ΔEST <0.08 eV) between the excited singlet and triplet states that gives rise to strong TADF, as supported by theoretical studies. Depending on the strength of the donor moieties, the emission color is fine-tuned in the visible region from green (2) to yellow (3) to red (4). Carbazole-containing 2 and 3 exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yields (PLQYs) approaching 100 %, whereas DMAC-substituted 4 is moderately emissive (PLQY=44 %) in a doped host film. Highly efficient green-to-red TADF-OLEDs are realized with the proposed ortho-D-A-D compounds as emitters. The green and yellow OLEDs incorporating Cz2oDBA (2) and BuCz2oDBA (3) emitters exhibit high external quantum efficiencies (EQEs) of 26.6 % and 21.6 %, respectively. In particular, the green device shows an excellent power efficiency above 100 lm W-1 . A red OLED fabricated with a DMAC2oDBA (4) emitter exhibits a maximum EQE of 10.1 % with an electroluminescence peak at 615 nm.

Abstract
(Hetero)arene-fused boroles are a class of compounds containing a 5-membered boron diene-ring. Based on their molecular framework, the (hetero)arene-fused boroles can be considered as boron-doped polycyclic antiaromatic hydrocarbons and are thus of great interest. Due to the vacant pz orbital on the 3-coordinate boron atom, the antiaromaticity and strain of the 5-membered borole ring, (hetero)arene-fused boroles possess strong electron accepting abilities and Lewis acidity. By functionalization, they can be tuned to optimize different properties for specific applications. Herein, we summarize synthetic methodologies, different strategies for their functionalization, and applications of (hetero)arene-fused boroles. (Hetero)arene-fused boroles, ‘antiaromatic’ 2n-electron π-systems, more stable and more functionalizable than boroles, offer greater potential for a variety of applications.![]()

Abstract
Using a new divergent approach, conjugated triarylborane dendrimers were synthesized up to the 2nd generation. The synthetic strategy consists of three steps: 1) functionalization, via iridium catalyzed C-H borylation; 2) activation, via fluorination of the generated boronate ester with K[HF2 ] or [N(nBu4 )][HF2 ]; and 3) expansion, via reaction of the trifluoroborate salts with aryl Grignard reagents. The concept was also shown to be viable for a convergent approach. All but one of the conjugated borane dendrimers exhibit multiple, distinct and reversible reduction potentials, making them potentially interesting materials for applications in molecular accumulators. Based on their photophysical properties, the 1st generation dendrimers exhibit good conjugation over the whole system. However, the conjugation does not increase further upon expansion to the 2nd generation, but the molar extinction coefficients increase linearly with the number of triarylborane subunits, suggesting a potential application as photonic antennas.

Abstract
Three different perfluoroalkylated borafluorenes (F Bf) were prepared and their electronic and photophysical properties were investigated. The systems have four trifluoromethyl moieties on the borafluorene moiety as well as two trifluoromethyl groups at the ortho positions of their exo-aryl moieties. They differ with regard to the para substituents on their exo-aryl moieties, being a proton (F XylF Bf, F Xyl: 2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl), a trifluoromethyl group (F MesF Bf, F Mes: 2,4,6-tris(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) or a dimethylamino group (p-NMe2 -F XylF Bf, p-NMe2 -F Xyl: 4-(dimethylamino)-2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl), respectively. All derivatives exhibit extraordinarily low reduction potentials, comparable to those of perylenediimides. The most electron-deficient derivative F MesF Bf was also chemically reduced and its radical anion isolated and characterized. Furthermore, all compounds exhibit very long fluorescent lifetimes of about 250 ns up to 1.6 μs; however, the underlying mechanisms responsible for this differ. The donor-substituted derivative p-NMe2 -F XylF Bf exhibits thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) from a charge-transfer (CT) state, whereas the F MesF Bf and F XylF Bf borafluorenes exhibit only weakly allowed locally excited (LE) transitions due to their symmetry and low transition-dipole moments.

Abstract
We observed a surprisingly high electronically driven regioselectivity for the iridium-catalyzed C-H borylation of donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) systems with diphenylamino (1) or carbazolyl (2) moieties as the donor, bis(2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)boryl (B(F Xyl)2 ) as the acceptor, and 1,4-phenylene as the π-bridge. Under our conditions, borylation was observed only at the sterically least encumbered para-positions of the acceptor group. As boronate esters are versatile building blocks for organic synthesis (C-C coupling, functional group transformations) the C-H borylation represents a simple potential method for post-functionalization by which electronic or other properties of D-π-A systems can be fine-tuned for specific applications. The photophysical and electrochemical properties of the borylated (1-(Bpin)2 ) and unborylated (1) diphenylamino-substituted D-π-A systems were investigated. Interestingly, the borylated derivative exhibits coordination of THF to the boronate ester moieties, influencing the photophysical properties and exemplifying the non-innocence of boronate esters.

Abstract
In this combined experimental and theoretical study, a computational protocol is reported to predict the excited states in D-π-A compounds containing the B(FXyl)2 (FXyl = 2,6-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl) acceptor group for the design of new thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters. To this end, the effect of different donor and π-bridge moieties on the energy gaps between local and charge-transfer singlet and triplet states is examined. To prove this computationally aided design concept, the D-π-B(FXyl)2 compounds 1-5 were synthesized and fully characterized. The photophysical properties of these compounds in various solvents, polymeric film, and in a frozen matrix were investigated in detail and show excellent agreement with the computationally obtained data. Furthermore, a simple structure-property relationship is presented on the basis of the molecular fragment orbitals of the donor and the π-bridge, which minimize the relevant singlet-triplet gaps to achieve efficient TADF emitters.

Abstract
The present study explores a series of novel donor-π-acceptor (D-π-A) molecules containing 4,4'-dimethyldiphenylamine moiety as donor, 4,4'-dinitrodiphenylborane as acceptor while different π-bridges as efficient linkers between them, which comprises of (-HCCH-)n, (-Ph-)n and (-Ph ̶ HCCH-)n combinations for compounds in series 1, 2 and 3, respectively. Quantum chemical computations are applied to calculate the linear polarizability (α), first (β) and second (γ) hyperpolarizabilities. A comparative analysis is performed considering an increase of NLO polarizabilities as a function of different π-linkers. Among the investigated compounds, 3c shows the largest first and second hyperpolarizabilities of 1378 × 10-30 and 34971 × 10-36 esu, respectively. Interestingly, an increase in NLO polarizability is observed by modifying the π-conjugated bridges and the largest NLO polarizability is observed for series 3 possessing (Ph ̶ HCCH-)n π-linker which is found due to its lower transition energy and higher oscillator strengths. Furthermore, TD-DFT investigations, frontier molecular orbitals (FMOs) and electron density difference (EDD) maps analysis have shown a more efficient intramolecular charge transfer character from donor to acceptor moieties through (Ph ̶ HCCH-)n π-linkers. The density of states (DOS) maps are showing explicit contributions of electronic states from different fragments of a molecular system where the partial contributions of (Ph ̶ HCCH-)n π-linkers is seen significant in HOMO-LUMO orbitals of all the systems in series number 3. Thus, we believe that our study will highlight the importance of different D-π-A chromophores having variant types of π-conjugation cores as discussed in the present investigation.

Abstract
A bis-triarylborane tetracation (4-Ar2 B-3,5-Me2 C6 H2 )-C≡C-C≡C-(3,5-Me2 C6 H2 -4-BAr2 [Ar=(2,6-Me2 -4-NMe3 -C6 H2 )+ ] (24+ ) shows distinctly different behaviour in its fluorimetric response than that of our recently published bis-triarylborane 5-(4-Ar2 B-3,5-Me2 C6 H2 )-2,2'-(C4 H2 S)2 -5'-(3,5-Me2 C6 H2 -4-BAr2 ) (34+ ). Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data on the neutral bis-triarylborane precursor 2 N confirm its rod-like dumbbell structure, which is shown to be important for DNA/RNA targeting and also for BSA protein binding. Fluorimetric titrations with DNA/RNA/BSA revealed the very strong affinity of 24+ and indicated the importance of the properties of the linker connecting the two triarylboranes. Using the butadiyne rather than a bithiophene linker resulted in an opposite emission effect (quenching vs. enhancement), and 24+ bound to BSA 100 times stronger than 34+ . Moreover, 24+ interacted strongly with ss-RNA, and circular dichroism (CD) results suggest ss-RNA chain-wrapping around the rod-like bis-triarylborane dumbbell structure like a thread around a spindle, a very unusual mode of binding of ss-RNA with small molecules. Furthermore, 24+ yielded strong Raman/SERS signals, allowing DNA or protein detection at ca. 10 nm concentrations. The above observations, combined with low cytotoxicity, efficient human cell uptake and organelle-selective accumulation make such compounds intriguing novel lead structures for bio-oriented, dual fluorescence/Raman-based applications.

Abstract
l-histidine tetra fluroborate (L-HTFB) is a semi-organic NLO material. Ab-initio computations were performed at CAM-B3LYP/ 6-311++g(d,p) level of theory to arrive at the structures, energies, and vibrational wave numbers. The experimental FT-IR and FT-Raman spectra of L-HTFB have been recorded and analyzed. It is compared with the simulated spectra. The scaled wave numbers obtained are in good agreement with the experimental values. Hirshfeld surface analysis represented in the 2D fingerprint plot reveals the interaction within the compound. Optimized geometry reveals that the complexes l -histidine (L-H) and tetrafluoroborate (TFB) are linked by H-F bond which provides inter and intra molecular hydrogen bonded interactions such as N10-H16⋯F25, N11-H17⋯F22, N11-H14⋯F24, N11-H14⋯N10 and N11-H15⋯O12. The inter-molecular distances H17⋯F22, H14⋯F24 and H16⋯F25 are in between 1.82 Å and 2.53 Å. The intra molecular distances H14⋯N10 and H15⋯O12 are found to be at 2.17 Å and 1.71 Å which stabilizes lone pair electron of N10 and O12 with energies 11.89 and 59.91 KJ/mol respectively. The intra and inter molecular hyperconjugations responsible for the stability of the molecule are well identified theoretically using the NBO analysis. Third order optical nonlinearity is measured by means of the open aperture Z-scan technique which reveals that the crystal has optical limiting property. Photoluminescence results clearly indicate the use of L-HTFB as a new violet-light emitting material.

Abstract
9,10-Anthrylene-bridged triarylborane-triarylamine donor-acceptor compounds were prepared to examine the influence of the bulky π-bridge on the electronic and photophysical properties of the compounds, with the aim of realizing their solid-state emission. The intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) absorption and emission between the vacant p orbital on the boron center, p(B), and occupied p orbital on the nitrogen center, p(N), through the π orbital of the anthrylene, π(anthrylene), were observed, and it was demonstrated that the HOMO-LUMO gap decreased with increasing number of introduced anthrylene units because of the effective lowering of LUMO originating from the p(B)-π(anthrylene) orbital interaction. The compounds exhibited solid-state emission with emission maxima at 560 nm and 643 nm, respectively, in the yellow to red region, with the corresponding absolute solid-state quantum yield of 18 % and 31 %, as a result of the combination of the highly congested structure originating from the anthrylene π-bridge and the introduction of bulky tert-butyl protecting groups.

Abstract
Four boron-carrying molecules were synthesized and purified. These were found to be (a) relatively neutral with respect to the parent BF derivative and (b) functionalized by donor–acceptor groups resulting in a charge transfer within the molecule. The study discusses the steric effect and the influence of the substitution of the side rings on the surroundings of the boron atom. Electronic structures were characterized by real-space bonding indicators. Hirshfeld surface and energy frameworks tools were applied to examine the crystal packing features.

Abstract
Two different chromophores, namely a dipolar and an octupolar system, were prepared and their linear and nonlinear optical properties as well as their bioimaging capabilities were compared. Both contain triphenylamine as the donor and a triarylborane as the acceptor, the latter modified with cationic trimethylammonio groups to provide solubility in aqueous media. The octupolar system exhibits a much higher two-photon brightness, and also better cell viability and enhanced selectivity for lysosomes compared with the dipolar chromophore. Furthermore, both dyes were applied in two-photon excited fluorescence (TPEF) live-cell imaging.

Abstract
N-heterocyclic olefins (NHOs), relatives of N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs), exhibit high nucleophilicity and soft Lewis basic character. To investigate their π-electron donating ability, NHOs were attached to triarylborane π-acceptors (A) giving donor (D)-π-A compounds 1-3. In addition, an enamine π-donor analogue (4) was synthesized for comparison. UV-visible absorption studies show a larger red shift for the NHO-containing boranes than for the enamine analogue, a relative of cyclic (alkyl)(amino) carbenes (CAACs). Solvent-dependent emission studies indicate that 1-4 have moderate intramolecular charge-transfer (ICT) behavior. Electrochemical investigations reveal that the NHO-containing boranes have extremely low reversible oxidation potentials (e.g., for 3, E ox 1 / 2 =-0.40 V vs. ferrocene/ferrocenium, Fc/Fc+ , in THF). Time-dependent (TD) DFT calculations show that the HOMOs of 1-3 are much more destabilized than that of the enamine-containing 4, which confirms the stronger donating ability of NHOs.

Abstract
Direct dimesitylborylation of benzofuran derivatives by a C-H activation catalyzed by an iridium(I)/N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC) complex in the presence of Ph2 MeSi-BMes2 afforded the corresponding dimesitylborylation products in good to high yield with excellent regioselectivity. This method provides a straightforward route to donor-(π-spacer)-acceptor systems with intriguing solvatochromic luminescence properties.

Abstract
The synthesis and characterization of 10-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolylbenzo[c]phenanthren-4-amine (3-B(Mes)2 -[4]helix-9-N(p-Tol)2 1) and 13-(dimesitylboryl)-N,N-di-p-tolyldibenzo[c,g]phenanthren-8-amine (3-B(Mes)2 -[5]helix-12-N(p-Tol)2 2) are reported herein. Their electrochemical and photophysical properties have been studied experimentally and theoretically. The donor and acceptor-substituted helicene derivatives exhibit moderate fluorescence quantum yields in THF (Φf =0.48 and 0.61 for 1 and 2, respectively), which are higher than unsubstituted ones (Φf =0.18 for [4]helicene; Φf <0.05 for [n]helicenes (n≥5)). In the solid state, the Φf values are higher (Φf =1.00 and 0.55 for 1 and 2, respectively) than those in solution, most likely due to the restrictions of molecular motions. The S1 ←S0 transitions of 1 and 2 are predominately HOMO→LUMO transitions. Upon excitation with UV light, the interplanar angle between the two terminal aryl rings of the [5]helix core of 2 decreases (S1 state compared with S0 state), which is similar to placing a spring under an external force.

Abstract
1,3-Dipolar cycloaddition reactions between a new azomethine ylide and three BPhMes2-functionalized internal alkynes produced three pairs of fluorescent push-pull regioisomers, which show distinct electronic and photophysical properties. All the six compounds are found to exhibit charge-transfer (CT) fluorescence, and some of which show rare and interesting temperature "turn-on" fluorescence.

Tuning the π-bridge of quadrupolar triarylborane chromophores for one- and two-photon excited fluorescence imaging of lysosomes in live cells. Chem Sci 2019; 10:5405-5422. Abstract
A series of tetracationic quadrupolar chromophores containing three-coordinate boron π-acceptors linked by different π-bridges, namely 4,4'-biphenyl, 2,7-pyrene, 2,7-fluorene, 3,6-carbazole and 5,5'-di(thien-2-yl)-3,6-diketopyrrolopyrrole, were synthesized. While their neutral precursors 1-5 displayed highly solvatochromic fluorescence, the water-soluble tetracationic target molecules 1M-5M, did not, but their emission colour could be tuned from blue to pink by changing the π-bridge. Compound 5M, containing the diketopyrrolopyrrole bridge, exhibits the most red-shifted absorption and emission maxima and the largest two-photon absorption cross-section (4560 GM at 740 nm in MeCN). Confocal laser scanning fluorescence microscopy studies in live cells confirm localization of the dye at the lysosome. Moreover, the low cytotoxicity, and high photostability of 5M combined with two-photon excited fluorescence imaging studies demonstrate its excellent potential for lysosomal imaging in live cells.
