Abstract
The stereocomplexation of polylactide (PLA) has been widely relied upon to develop degradable, sustainable materials with increased strength and improved material properties in comparison to stereopure PLA. However, forming functionalized copolymers of PLA while retaining high crystallinity remains elusive. Herein, the controlled ring-opening copolymerization (ROCOP) of lactide (LA) and functionalized cyclic carbonate monomers is undertaken. The produced polymers are shown to remain crystalline up to 25 mol % carbonate content and are efficiently stereocomplexed with homopolymer PLA and copolymers of opposite chirality. Polymers with alkene and alkyne pendent handles are shown to undergo efficient derivatization with thiol-ene click chemistry, which would allow both the covalent conjugation of therapeutic moieties and tuning of material properties.

Abstract
A synthetic biopolymer derived from furandicarboxylic acid monomer and hydroxyethyl-terminated poly(ether sulfone) is presented. The synthesis involves 4,4'-dichlorodiphenyl sulfone and 4,4-dihydroxydiphenyl sulfone, resulting in poly(butylene furandicarboxylate)-poly(ether sulfone) copolyesters (PBFES) through melt polycondensation with titanium-catalyzed polymerization. This facile method yields segmented polyesters incorporating polysulfone, creating a versatile group of high-temperature thermoplastics with adjustable thermomechanical properties. The PBFES copolyesters demonstrate an impressive tensile modulus of 2830 MPa and a tensile strength of 84 MPa for PBFES55. Additionally, the poly(ether sulfone) unit imparts a relatively high glass transition temperature (Tg), ranging from 36.6 °C for poly(butylene 2,5-furandicarboxylate) to 112.3 °C for PBFES62. Moreover, the complete amorphous film of PBFES exhibits excellent transparency and solvent resistance, making it suitable for applications, such as food packaging materials.

Abstract
In high molecular weight poly(L-lactic acid)/poly(D-lactic acid) (HMW PLLA/PDLA) blends, the construction of exclusive stereocomplex crystals (SC) with high crystallinity and strong melt memory remains a great challenge. In the present study, various norbornene dicarboxylate complexes (TMXNa, Mg, Al, or Ca) were employed as the stereo-selective nucleating agents (NAs), and their effect on the crystallization characteristics, rheological behavior, and heat resistance of PLLA/PDLA blends were thoroughly studied. Strikingly, TMX-Al facilitated the construction of exclusive SC with over 50 % crystallinity and excellent melt memory. The dense SC crystals network structure boosted the heat resistance of L/D-xAl blends with a VST as high as 145 °C. The strengthened intermolecular interaction fostered the generation of pre-ordered structure in the melt and enhanced chain interdiffusion, which contributed to intermolecular nucleation and SC crystallization in L/D-xAl blend. This study opens up a new avenue for melt processing and application development of SC-PLA materials.

Abstract
The mechanical properties of polylactide stereocomplexes (PLA SC) have been primarily studied through tensile testing, with inconsistent results, and the compressive properties of PLA SC compared to homocrystalline or amorphous PLA remain poorly understood. In this study, we coated porous bioactive glass 13-93 scaffolds with amorphous, homocrystalline, or stereocomplex PLA to investigate their mechanical and degradation properties before and after immersion in simulated body fluid. The glass scaffolds had interconnected pores and an average porosity of 76%. The PLA coatings, which were 10-100 μm thick and approximately 3% of the glass scaffold mass, covered the glass to a large extent. The compressive strength and toughness of all PLA-coated scaffolds were significantly higher than those of uncoated scaffolds, with approximately a fourfold increase before immersion and a twofold increase after immersion. The compressive strength and toughness of PLA SC-coated scaffolds were similar to those of scaffolds with homocrystalline PLA coating, and significantly higher than for scaffolds with amorphous PLA coating. All PLA coatings moderated the initial pH increase caused by the glass, which could benefit surrounding cells and bone tissue in vivo after implantation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Bone tissue engineering is a promising approach to large-scale bone regeneration. This involves the use of an artificial extracellular matrix or scaffold and osteoblasts to promote osteogenesis and ossification at defect sites. Scaffolds are constructed using biomaterials that typically have properties similar to those of natural bone. METHOD In this study, which is a review of the literature, various evidences have been discussed in the field of Poly Lactic acid (PLA) polymer application and modifications made on it in order to induce osteogenesis and repair bone lesions. RESULTS PLA is a synthetic aliphatic polymer that has been extensively used for scaffold construction in bone tissue engineering owing to its good processability, biocompatibility, and flexibility in design. However, PLA has some drawbacks, including low osteoconductivity, low cellular adhesion, and the possibility of inflammatory reactions owing to acidic discharge in a living environment. To overcome these issues, a combination of PLA and other biomaterials has been introduced. CONCLUSIONS This short review discusses PLA's characteristics of PLA, its applications in bone regeneration, and its combination with other biomaterials.

Abstract
Reactions of achiral di(2-pyridyl)methyl substituted aminophenols L1-6H (2-{N-R3-N-[di(2-pyridyl)methyl]aminomethyl}-4-R1-6-R2-C6H2OH: R1 = R2 = tBu, R3 = nBu (L1H), R3 = nhexyl (L2H), R3 = cyclohexyl (L3H); R1 = R2 = cumyl, R3 = nBu (L4H), R3 = nhexyl (L5H), R3 = cyclohexyl (L6H)) with {Mg[N(SiMe3)2]2}2 ([L1-6H]:[Mg] = 1:1) afforded a series of magnesium silylamido complexes 1-6. In the solid state, the magnesium center of 3, 4, and 6 is penta-coordinated by the tetradentate aminophenloate ligand and one silylamido ligand to form a seriously distorted square-pyramidal geometry as confirmed by X-ray crystallography diffraction analysis. VT 1H NMR and ROESY experiments further indicate that these magnesium complexes are also five-coordinated in solutions where the coordination of either of the two pyridyl pendants to the magnesium center is maintained. Complexes 1-6 are highly active toward the ring-opening polymerization of rac-lactide (rac-LA) at r.t. both in toluene and in tetrahydrofuran, capable of polymerizing 500 equiv of monomer to high conversions just within minutes. Among them, complex 3 exhibited the highest iso-stereoselectivity, affording moderately isotactic polylactide in toluene (Pm = 0.75). It is found that the isoselectivities and activities of these magnesium complexes toward the polymerization of rac-LA are closely associated with the substituents at the ortho-position of the phenoxide unit and on the skeleton nitrogen atom of the ligand. On the basis of NMR spectroscopic studies, the formation of isotactic PLAs with dominant stereoblock sequences was witnessed by using these magnesium complexes as initiators, and the inequivalent coordination of two pyridyl pendant arms in these magnesium complexes might be the source of exerting isoselective control.

Abstract
This review paper analyzes the development of advanced class polylactide (PLA) materials through a combination of stereocomplexation and nanocomposites approaches. The similarities in these approaches provide the opportunity to generate an advanced stereocomplex PLA nanocomposite (stereo-nano PLA) material with various beneficial properties. As a potential "green" polymer with tunable characteristics (e.g., modifiable molecular structure and organic-inorganic miscibility), stereo-nano PLA could be used for various advanced applications. The molecular structure modification of PLA homopolymers and nanoparticles in stereo-nano PLA materials enables us to encounter stereocomplexation and nanocomposites constraints. The hydrogen bonding of D- and L-lactide fragments aids in the formation of stereococomplex crystallites, while the hetero-nucleation capabilities of nanofillers result in a synergism that improves the physical, thermal, and mechanical properties of materials, including stereocomplex memory (melt stability) and nanoparticle dispersion. The special properties of selected nanoparticles also allow the production of stereo-nano PLA materials with distinctive characteristics, such as electrical conductivity, anti-inflammatory, and anti-bacterial properties. The D- and L-lactide chains in PLA copolymers provide self-assembly capabilities to form stable nanocarrier micelles for encapsulating nanoparticles. This development of advanced stereo-nano PLA with biodegradability, biocompatibility, and tunability properties shows potential for use in wider and advanced applications as a high-performance material, in engineering field, electronic, medical device, biomedical, diagnosis, and therapeutic applications.

Abstract
Due to its poor toughness and hydrophilicity, the application of polylactic acid (PLA) in the field of absorbent sanitary materials is restricted. A butenediol vinyl alcohol copolymer (BVOH) was used to improve PLA via melt blending. The morphology, molecular structure, crystallization, thermal stability, tensile property, and hydrophilicity of PLA/BVOH composites with different mass ratios were investigated. The results show that the PLA/BVOH composites possessed a two-phase structure with good interfacial adhesion. The BVOH could effectively blend into PLA without a chemical reaction. The addition of the BVOH promoted the crystallization of PLA, improved the perfection of the crystalline region, and increased the glass transition temperature and melting temperature of PLA in the heating process. Moreover, the thermal stability of PLA was markedly improved by adding the BVOH. The addition of the BVOH also had a significant effect on the tensile property of the PLA/BVOH composites. When the content of the BVOH was 5 wt.%, the elongation at the break of the PLA/BVOH composites could reach 9.06% (increased by 76.3%). In addition, the hydrophilicity of PLA was also significantly improved, and the water contact angles decreased with the increase in the BVOH content and time. When the content of the BVOH was 10 wt.%, the water contact angle could reach 37.3° at 60 s, suggesting good hydrophilicity.

Abstract
Polylactide (PLA) crystallizes to form extended-chain crystals in a Langmuir monolayer because crystallization is accelerated on the water surface. This is a unique situation where chain packing can be analyzed by simply measuring the lamellar thickness. Herein, star-shaped poly(l-lactide)s (PLLAs) with 2-12 arms were synthesized through the polymerization of l-lactide with various polyols as initiators, and their crystallization behavior in a monolayer was studied via atomic force microscopy. The PLLAs comprising 2-4 arms crystallized with all arms aligned in the same direction and being folded at the central polyol unit. Meanwhile, the PLLAs comprising 6 and 12 arms crystallized with both halves of the arms extended from the center to the opposite directions, most likely due to the steric hindrance of the crowded arms. Considering that the PLLAs crystallized from a once-formed condensed amorphous state during compression, they have a strong tendency to crystallize with the arms aligned in the same direction. The crystallization rate of star-shaped PLAs is known to reduce compared with that of a linear PLA even if the number of arms is as few as 2. This should be closely related to the unique crystallization behavior of the star-shaped PLLAs with the arms aligned in the same direction.

Abstract
Because of superior tensile strength, biodegradability, and biocompatibility, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) has emerged as one among the growth-oriented biodegradable materials. But it has been limited to some extent in practical applications due to poor ductility. Consequently, in order to improve the drawback of poor ductility of PLA, ductile blends were obtained by melt-blending of poly(butylene succinate-co-butylene 2,5-thiophenedicarboxylate) (PBSTF25) with PLA. PBSTF25 has a good improvement on the ductility of PLA due to its excellent toughness. Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) showed that PBSTF25 promoted the cold crystallization of PLA. Wide-angle X-ray diffraction (XRD) results revealed that PBSTF25 experienced stretch-induced crystallization throughout the stretching procedure. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed neat PLA had a smooth fracture surface, but the blends had rough fracture surface. PBSTF25 can improve the ductility and processing properties of PLA. When the addition of PBSTF25 reached 20 wt%, tensile strength was 42.5 MPa and elongation at break increased to 156.6 %, approximately 19 times as much as PLA. The toughening effect of PBSTF25 was better than that of poly(butylene succinate).

Abstract
Additives are widely used to improve the processability, toughness, and hydrolytic resistance of poly(lactic acid) (PLA)-based materials. This study compares neat PLA fibers and fibers made from PLA blends with either poly(butylene succinate) (PBS) as a plasticizer or poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) as a nucleating agent. The fibers have been characterized with regard to their physical and structural properties after fabrication as well as after artificial aging at elevated temperature and humidity conditions. All samples have been fabricated using industrial melt-spinning equipment, resulting in a high crystallinity of about XC = 80% and a good initial toughness. Long-term relaxation behavior has been assessed with a self-developed lifetime prediction model, which is successfully verified for semicrystalline blended fibers. Despite slight improvement of the fiber elasticity and ductility, both types of blended fibers demonstrated a reduced hydrolytic resistance. These results suggest a design strategy for neat durable PLA fibers through processing-induced high crystallinity and orientation, which provide improved hydrolytic stability while preserving tough mechanical performance.

Abstract
Tendon and ligament (TL) injuries affect millions of people annually. Biopolymers play a significant role in TL tissue repair, whether the treatment relies on tissue engineering strategies or using artificial tendon grafts. The biopolymer governs the mechanical properties, biocompatibility, degradation, and fabrication method of the TL scaffold. Many natural, synthetic and hybrid biopolymers have been studied in TL regeneration, often combined with therapeutic agents and minerals to engineer novel scaffold systems. However, most of the advanced biopolymers have not advanced to clinical use yet. Here, we aim to review recent biopolymers and discuss their features for TL tissue engineering. After introducing the properties of the native tissue, we discuss different types of natural, synthetic and hybrid biopolymers used in TL tissue engineering. Then, we review biopolymers used in commercial absorbable and non-absorbable TL grafts. Finally, we explain the challenges and future directions for the development of novel biopolymers in TL regenerative treatment.

Abstract
Access to fresh water is an increasing concern worldwide. The contamination of this vital liquid is largely caused by discharges of pollutants into rivers and seas from different types of industries. Waste dyes from different industries have been classified as harmful to health. In this study, polymeric nanomaterials based on polylactic acid (PLA) and nanoparticles of titanium dioxide (TiO2) and zinc oxide (ZnO) modified by ultrasound-assisted extrusion were obtained. These materials were evaluated by FTIR, DRX, TGA, DSC, SEM and methylene blue adsorption. From the results of the physicochemical characterizations, it was possible to observe the presence of TiO2 and ZnO nanoparticles dispersed in the polymeric matrix, increasing the crystallinity and thermal stability of the polymer. In addition, a good dispersion of the nanoparticles could be seen by means of SEM, due to the extrusion assisted by ultrasound. The methylene blue dye adsorption tests revealed that the best result was 98% dye adsorption in a time of 13 min for the 1.5% PZT sample. Additionally, this material could be used for 3 adsorption cycles without affecting its adsorbent properties.

Scalable Preparation of Complete Stereo-Complexation Polylactic Acid Fiber and Its Hydrolysis Resistance. Molecules 2022; 27:molecules27217654. Abstract
Due to their high sensitivity to temperature and humidity, the applications of polylactic acid (PLA) products are limited. The stereo-complexation (SC) formed by poly(L-lactic acid) (PLLA) and its enantiomer poly(D-lactic acid) (PDLA) can effectively improve the heat resistance and hydrolysis resistance of PLA products. In this work, the blended melt-spinning process of PLLA/PDLA was carried out using a polyester fiber production line to obtain PLA fiber with a complete SC structure. The effects of high-temperature tension heat-setting on the crystalline structure, thermal properties, mechanical properties, and hydrolysis resistance were discussed. The results indicated that when the tension heat-setting temperature reached 190 °C, the fiber achieved an almost complete SC structure, and its melting point was 222.5 °C. An accelerated hydrolysis experiment in a 95 °C water bath proved that the SC crystallites had better hydrolysis resistance than homocrystallization (HC). The monofilament strength retention rate of SC−190 fiber reached as high as 78.5% after hydrolysis for 24 h, which was significantly improved compared with PLLA/PDLA drawn fiber.

Abstract
This review covers the development of eco-friendly, bio-based materials based on polylactide (PLA) and cellulose nanowhiskers (CNWs). As a biodegradable polymer, PLA is one of the promising materials to replace petroleum-based polymers. In the field of nanocomposites, CNWs offer many advantages; they are made from renewable resources and exhibit beneficial mechanical and thermal properties in combination with polymer matrix. A wide range of surface modifications has been done to improve the miscibility of CNW with the PLA homopolymer, which generally gives rise to hydrophobic properties. PLA–CNW nanocomposite materials are fully degradable and sustainable and also offer improved mechanical and thermal properties. Limitations pertaining to the miscibility of CNWs with PLA were solved through surface modification and chemical grafting on the CNW surfaces. Further development has been done by combining PLA-based material via stereocomplexation approaches in the presence of CNW particles, known as bio-stereo-nanocomposite PLA–CNW. The combination of stereocomplex crystalline structures in the presence of well-distributed CNW particles produces synergetic effects that enhance the mechanical and thermal properties, including stereocomplex memory (melt stability). The bio-based materials from PLA and CNWs may serve as eco-friendly materials owing to their sustainability (obtained from renewable resources), biodegradability, and tunability properties.

Abstract
Poly(lactic acid) (PLA) is an important polymer that is based on renewable biomass resources. Because of environmental issues, more renewable sources for polymers synthesis have been sought for industrial purposes. In this sense, cheaper monomers should be used to facilitate better utilization of less valuable chemicals and therefore granting more sustainable processes. Some points are raised about the need to study the total degradability of any PLA, which may require specific composting conditions (e.g., temperature, type of microorganism, adequate humidity and aerobic environment). Polymerization processes to produce PLA are presented with an emphasis on D,L-lactic acid (or rac-lactide) as the reactant monomer. The syntheses involving homogeneous and heterogeneous catalytic processes to produce poly(D,L-Lactic acid) (PDLLA) are also addressed. Additionally, the production of blends, copolymers, and composites with PDLLA are also presented exemplifying different preparation methods. Some general applications of these materials mostly dedicated to the biomedical area over the last 10–15 years will be pointed out.

Substantially Enhanced Stereocomplex Crystallization of Poly(L-Lactide)/Poly(D-Lactide) Blends by the Formation of Multi-Arm Stereo-Block Copolymers. CRYSTALS 2022. Abstract
Stereocomplex-type polylactide (SC-PLA) created by alternate packing of poly(L-lactide) (PLLA) and poly(D-lactide) (PDLA) chains in a crystalline state has emerged as a growingly popular engineering bioplastic that possesses excellent hydrolytic stability and thermomechanical properties. However, it is extremely difficult to acquire high-performance SC-PLA products via melt-processing of high-molecular-weight PLLA/PDLA blends because both SC crystallites and homocrystallites (HCs) are competitively formed in the melt-crystallization. Herein, a facile yet powerful way was employed to boost SC formation by introducing trace amounts of some epoxy-functionalized small-molecule modifiers into the enantiomeric blends during reactive melt-blending. The results show that the SC formation is considerably enhanced with the in situ generation of multi-arm stereo-block PLA copolymers, based on the reaction between epoxy groups of the modifiers and hydroxyl end groups of PLAs. More impressively, it is intriguing to find that the introduction of only 0.5 wt% modifiers can induce exclusive SC formation in the blends upon isothermal and non-isothermal melt-crystallizations. The outstanding SC crystallizability might be attributed to the suppressing effect of such unique copolymers on the separation of the alternately arranged PLLA/PDLA chain segments in molten state as a compatibilizer. Furthermore, the generation of these copolymers does not result in a significant increase in melt viscosity of the blends. These findings suggest new opportunities for the high-throughput processing of SC-PLA materials into useful products.

Fabrication of PLA/PCL/Graphene Nanoplatelet (GNP) Electrically Conductive Circuit Using the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) 3D Printing Technique. MATERIALS 2022; 15:ma15030762. Abstract
For the purpose of fabricating electrically conductive composites via the fused filament fabrication (FFF) technique whose properties were compared with injection-moulded properties, poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and polycaprolactone (PCL) were mixed with different contents of graphene nanoplatelets (GNP). The wettability, morphological, rheological, thermal, mechanical, and electrical properties of the 3D-printed samples were investigated. The microstructural images showed the selective localization of the GNPs in the PCL nodules that are dispersed in the PLA phase. The electrical resistivity results using the four-probes method revealed that the injection-moulded samples are insulators, whereas the 3D-printed samples featuring the same graphene content are semiconductors. Varying the printing raster angles also exerted an influence on the electrical conductivity results. The electrical percolation threshold was found to be lower than 15 wt.%, whereas the rheological percolation threshold was found to be lower than 10 wt.%. Furthermore, the 20 wt.% and 25 wt.% GNP composites were able to connect an electrical circuit. An increase in the Young’s modulus was shown with the percentage of graphene. As a result, this work exhibited the potential of the FFF technique to fabricate biodegradable electrically conductive PLA-PCL-GNP composites that can be applicable in the electronic domain.

Abstract
In this study, the production of stereocomplex PLA formulations (sc-PLA) by compounding and subsequent injection moulding at different mould temperatures was investigated. Several selective nucleating agents were identified and compounded with different poly(L-lactide)/poly(D-lactide) (PLLA/PDLA) ratios on a co-rotating twin screw extruder. The effect of nucleating agents (NA) on the crystallisation behaviour of the compound was systematically investigated by DSC analysis. The crystallisation behaviour of NA-21 (aluminium complex of a phosphoric ester), also in combination with talc, under cooling rates of up to 70 K/min was analysed. The wide-angle X-ray diffraction (WAXD) results showed a complete stereocomplex (sc) crystal formation on all specimens containing NA-21 even at the highest cooling rates. The thermo-mechanical testing of sc-PLA shows a Young’s modulus of approx. 3 GPa, yield stress of 30–40 MPa, elongation of 1%, and a heat deflection temperature (HDT-B) up to 180 °C. Processing sc-PLA exclusively via the processing route of compounding and injection moulding will open new areas of application for PLA at higher temperatures.

Abstract
Stereocomplexation is one of several approaches for improving polylactide (PLA) properties. The high molecular weight of poly L-lactide (PLLA) and poly D-lactide (PDLA) homopolymers are a constraint during the formation of stereocomplex PLAs (s-PLAs). The presence of s-PLA particles in PLA PLLA/PDLA blends can initiate the formation of s-PLA crystalline structures. We used the solution casting method to study the utilization of s-PLA materials from high molecular weight PLLA/PDLA blends for increasing s-PLA formation. The s-PLA particles initiated the formation of high molecular weight PLLA/PDLA blends, obtaining 49.13% s-PLA and 44.34% of the total crystalline fraction. In addition, the mechanical properties were enhanced through s-PLA crystalline formation and the increasing of total crystallinity of the PLLA/PDLA blends. The s-PLA particles supported initiation for s-PLA formation and acted as a nucleating agent for PLA homopolymers. These unique characteristics of s-PLA particles show potential to overcome the molecular weight limitation for stereocomplexation of PLLA/PDLA blends.

Abstract
The melt blending of polylactic acid (PLA) and thermoplastic silicone polyurethane (TPSiU) elastomer was performed to toughen PLA. The molecular structure, crystallization, thermal properties, compatibility, mechanical properties and rheological properties of the PLA/TPSiU blends of different mass ratios (100/0, 95/5, 90/10, 85/15 and 80/20) were investigated. The results showed that TPSiU was effectively blended into PLA, but no chemical reaction occurred. The addition of TPSiU had no obvious effect on the glass transition temperature and melting temperature of PLA, but slightly reduced the crystallinity of PLA. The morphology and dynamic mechanical analysis results demonstrated the poor thermodynamic compatibility between PLA and TPSiU. Rheological behavior studies showed that PLA/TPSiU melt was typically pseudoplastic fluid. As the content of TPSiU increased, the apparent viscosity of PLA/TPSiU blends showed a trend of rising first and then falling. The addition of TPSiU had a significant effect on the mechanical properties of PLA/TPSiU blends. When the content of TPSiU was 15 wt%, the elongation at break of the PLA/TPSiU blend reached 22.3% (5.0 times that of pure PLA), and the impact strength reached 19.3 kJ/m2 (4.9 times that of pure PLA), suggesting the favorable toughening effect.

Abstract
Poly (l-lactic acid) (PLLA) is a promising biomedical polymer material with a wide range of applications. The diverse enantiomeric forms of PLLA provide great opportunities for thermal and mechanical enhancement through stereocomplex formation. The addition of poly (d-lactic acid) (PDLA) as a nucleation agent and the formation of stereocomplex crystallization (SC) have been proven to be an effective method to improve the crystallization and mechanical properties of the PLLA. In this study, PLLA was blended with different amounts of PDLA through a melt blending process and their properties were calculated. The effect of the PDLA on the crystallization behavior, thermal, and mechanical properties of PLLA were investigated systematically by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), X-ray diffraction (XRD), polarized optical microscopy (POM), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), and tensile test. Based on our findings, SC formed easily when PDLA content was increased, and acts as nucleation sites. Both SC and homo crystals (HC) were observed in the PLLA/PDLA blends. As the content of PDLA increased, the degree of crystallization increased, and the mechanical strength also increased.

Abstract
Poly(l-lactic acid) with high molecular weight was used to prepare PLLA films by means of the solvent casting technique. Poly(d-lactic acid) (PDLA) and poly(d-lactic acid-co-glucose) copolymer (PDLAG) with a low molecular weight were synthesized from d-lactic acid and glucose through melt polycondensation. PLLA films were immersed in PDLA or PDLAG solution to prepare surface-modified PLLA films. The modified PLLA film presented stereocomplex crystal (SC) on its surface and homogeneous crystals (HC) in its bulk. The HC structure and surface morphology of modified PLLA films were obviously damaged by PDLA or PDLAG solution. With increasing immersion time, the PLLA films modified by PDLA decreased both the HC and SC structure, while the PLLA films modified by PDLAG increased the SC structure and decreased the HC structure. Hydrophilic glucose residues of PDLAG on the surface would improve the hydrophilicity of surface-modified PLLA films. Moreover, the hydrophilicity of glucose residues and the interaction of glucose residues with lactic acid units could retard HC destruction and SC crystallization, so that PLLA films modified by PDLAG possessed lower melting temperatures of HC and SC, the crystallinity of SC and the water contact angle, compared with PDLAG-modified PLLA films. The SC structure could improve the heat resistance of modified PLLA film, but glucose residues could block crystallization to promote the thermal degradation of PLA materials. The surface modification of PLLA films will improve the thermal stability, hydrophilicity and crystallization properties of PLA materials, which is essential in order to obtain PLA-based biomaterials.

Abstract
As one of the most attractive biopolymers nowadays in terms of their sustainability, degradability, and material tune-ability, the improvement of polylactide (PLA) homopolymer properties by studying the utilization of stereocomplex polylactide (s-PLA) effectively and efficiently is needed. In this sense, we have studied the utilization of s-PLA compared to poly D-lactide (PDLA) homopolymers as a nucleating agent for PLA homopolymers. The mechanical and thermal properties and crystallization behavior of PLA homopolymers in the presence of nucleating agents have been evaluated using a universal testing machine, differential scanning calorimeter, and X-ray diffractometer instruments, respectively. PDLA and s-PLA materials can be used to increase the thermal and mechanical properties of poly L-lactide (PLLA) homopolymers. The s-PLA materials increased the mechanical properties by increasing crystallinity of the PLLA homopolymers. PLLA/s-PLA enhanced mechanical properties to a certain level (5% s-PLA content), then decreased them due to higher s-PLA materials affecting the brittleness of the blends. PDLA homopolymers increased mechanical properties by forming stereocomplex PLA with PLLA homopolymers. Non-isothermal and isothermal evaluation showed that s-PLA materials were more effective at enhancing PLLA homopolymer properties through nucleating agent mechanism.

Abstract
Control of stereoregularity is inherent to precision polymerization chemistry for the development of functional materials. A prototypal example of this strategy is the ring-opening polymerization (ROP) of racemic lactide (rac-LA), a bio-sourced monomer. Despite significant advances in organocatalysis, stereoselective ROP of rac-LA employing chiral organocatalysts remains unexplored. Here we tackle that challenge by resorting to Takemoto's catalyst, a chiral aminothiourea, in the presence of a phosphazene base. This chiral binary organocatalytic system allows for fast, chemo- and stereoselective ROP of rac-LA at room temperature, yielding highly isotactic, semi-crystalline and metal-free polylactide, with a melting temperature as high as 187 °C.

Abstract
The coordination chemistry and the activities in the ring-opening polymerization catalysis of racemic lactide (LA) of magnesium complexes of a series of {ONNN}-type sequential monoanionic ligands are described. All ligands include pyridyl and substituted-phenolate as peripheral groups. The ligands bearing either chiral or meso-bipyrrolidine cores led to single diastereomeric complexes, whereas the ligands bearing a diaminoethane core led to diastereomer mixtures. All {ONNN}Mg-X complexes [X=Cl, HMDS (hexamethyldisilazide)] led to highly active and isoselective catalysts. The complexes bearing the chiral bipyrrolidine core exhibited the highest activities (full consumption of 5000 equiv. of rac-LA at RT within 5 min) and highest isoselectivities (Pm =0.91), as well as a living character. The complexes of the meso-bipyrrolidine based ligands were almost as active and slightly less stereoselective, while those of the diaminoethane based ligands exhibited reduced activities and isoselectivities.
