High Temperature, Isothermal Growth Promotes Close Packing and Thermal Stability in DNA-Engineered Colloidal Crystals

We report a strategy to accelerate the synthesis and increase the crystallinity of colloidal crystals (CCs) engineered with DNA. Specifically, by holding the DNA-modified Au particle building blocks above the Tm of the DNA bonding elements (i.e., free from the particles), but slightly below the Tm of the anticipated CC during the assembly process, crystallinity is increased, and enthalpically favored phases with high degrees of facet registration are observed. We studied the utility of this approach with systems for which the commonly adopted slow-cooling approach yielded primarily amorphous aggregates. In particular, we used it to synthesize high-volume fraction CCs from large (80 nm) anisotropic nanoparticles (cubes and rhombic dodecahedra) with short (<14 nm) DNA designed to restrict the degrees of freedom for the DNA bonds and maintain the anisotropy of the particle building block. Small-angle X-ray scattering and electron microscopy studies show that the crystalline phases synthesized via this method are more thermally stable than their corresponding aggregate phases, likely due to an increased number of DNA-DNA bonds between particles. Crystal size tunability (between 0.5 and 15 μm edge lengths) and epitaxial growth were demonstrated using this strategy by modulating the NaCl concentration in tandem with previously synthesized CC nuclei. Taken together, this isothermal strategy demonstrates how to deliberately crystallize a wide variety of anisotropic colloidal materials and expands the phase space accessible to nanoparticles modified with DNA.

Colloidal photonic crystals towards biological applications

Colloidal photonic crystals (CPCs), fabricated from the assembly of micro-/nano-particles, have attracted considerable interest due to their unique properties, such as structural color, slow-photon effect, and high specific surface area (SSA). Benefiting from these properties, significant progress has been made in the biological applications of CPCs. In this perspective, these properties and relative manipulation strategies are firstly discussed, building bridges between properties and biological applications of CPCs. Structural color endows CPCs with naked-eye sensing capability, which can be applied to physiological state assessment and diagnosis, as well as self-report of CPC-based diagnostic and therapeutic devices. The slow-photon effect contributes to enhanced fluorescence, surface-enhanced Raman scattering, and efficacy of photodynamic/photothermal therapy, when CPCs are combined with corresponding functional materials. High SSA provides CPCs with abundant binding sites and superior capabilities for loading, adsorption, delivery, etc. These properties can be utilized individually or synergistically to grant CPCs superior performance in biological applications. Next, the recent advancements of CPCs towards biological applications are summarized, including biosensors, wound dressings, cells-on-a-chip, and phototherapy. Finally, a perspective on the challenges and future development of CPCs for biological applications is presented.

Cation-Induced Self-Assembly of α-MnO2 Nanowires into High-Purity Self-Standing Three-Dimensional Network Aerogels for Catalytic Decomposition of Carcinogenic Formaldehyde at Ambient Temperature

Formaldehyde (HCHO), a ubiquitous gaseous pollutant in indoor environments, threatens human health under long-term exposure, necessitating its effective elimination. Due to its advantages in enhancing mass transfer and effectively exposing active sites, aerogels with a three-dimensional (3D) interconnected network structure are expected to achieve efficient and stable decomposition of HCHO at ambient temperature. However, how to realize the self-assembly of transition metal oxides to construct high-purity 3D network aerogels is still a huge challenge. Herein, the cation-induced self-assembly strategy was developed to construct high-purity self-standing 3D network manganese dioxide aerogels. The interaction between cations and the surface groups of nanowires is crucial for successful self-assembly, which leads to the cross-winding of nanowires with each other, forming a 3D-structured network. The K+-induced 3D-MnO2 exhibited excellent catalytic performance for HCHO, which could continuously and steadily decompose HCHO into CO2 and H2O at ambient temperature. Thanks to the 3D interconnected network structure, on the one hand, it provides a large specific surface area and porosity, reducing mass transfer resistance and promoting the adsorption of HCHO and O2 molecules. On the other hand, it is more important to fully expose the active sites, which can generate more surface active oxygen species and achieve effective recycling and regeneration. Importantly, 3D-MnO2 has a strong ability to capture and activate water molecules in the atmosphere, which could be further involved in the replenishment of the consumed hydroxyl groups. This study proposes a strategy for self-assembly of transition metal oxides through cation-induction, which provides a new catalyst design approach for the room temperature decomposition of VOCs.

Structural Rheology in the Development and Study of Complex Polymer Materials

The progress in polymer science and nanotechnology yields new colloidal and macromolecular objects and their combinations, which can be defined as complex polymer materials. The complexity may include a complicated composition and architecture of macromolecular chains, specific intermolecular interactions, an unusual phase behavior, and a structure of a multi-component polymer-containing material. Determination of a relation between the structure of a complex material, the structure and properties of its constituent elements, and the rheological properties of the material as a whole is the subject of structural rheology-a valuable tool for the development and study of novel materials. This work summarizes the author's structural-rheological studies of complex polymer materials for determining the conditions and rheo-manifestations of their micro- and nanostructuring. The complicated chemical composition of macromolecular chains and its role in polymer structuring via block segregation and cooperative hydrogen bonds in melt and solutions is considered using tri- and multiblock styrene/isoprene and vinyl acetate/vinyl alcohol copolymers. Specific molecular interactions are analyzed in solutions of cellulose; its acetate butyrate; a gelatin/carrageenan combination; and different acrylonitrile, oxadiazole, and benzimidazole copolymers. A homogeneous structuring may result from a conformational transition, a mesophase formation, or a macromolecular association caused by a complex chain composition or specific inter- and supramolecular interactions, which, however, may be masked by macromolecular entanglements when determining a rheological behavior. A heterogeneous structure formation implies a microscopic phase separation upon non-solvent addition, temperature change, or intense shear up to a macroscopic decomposition. Specific polymer/particle interactions have been examined using polyethylene oxide solutions, polyisobutylene melts, and cellulose gels containing solid particles of different nature, demonstrating the competition of macromolecular entanglements, interparticle interactions, and adsorption polymer/particle bonds in governing the rheological properties. Complex chain architecture has been considered using long-chain branched polybutylene-adipate-terephthalate and polyethylene melts, cross-linked sodium hyaluronate hydrogels, asphaltene solutions, and linear/highly-branched polydimethylsiloxane blends, showing that branching raises the viscosity and elasticity and can result in limited miscibility with linear isomonomer chains. Finally, some examples of composite adhesives, membranes, and greases as structured polymeric functional materials have been presented with the demonstration of the relation between their rheological and performance properties.

Recent Advances in Research from Nanoparticle to Nano-Assembly: A Review

The careful arrangement of nanomaterials (NMs) holds promise for revolutionizing various fields, from electronics and biosensing to medicine and optics. This review delves into the intricacies of nano-assembly (NA) techniques, focusing on oriented-assembly methodologies and stimuli-dependent approaches. The introduction provides a comprehensive overview of the significance and potential applications of NA, setting the stage for review. The oriented-assembly section elucidates methodologies for the precise alignment and organization of NMs, crucial for achieving desired functionalities. The subsequent section delves into stimuli-dependent techniques, categorizing them into chemical and physical stimuli-based approaches. Chemical stimuli-based self-assembly methods, including solvent, acid-base, biomolecule, metal ion, and gas-induced assembly, are discussed in detail by presenting examples. Additionally, physical stimuli such as light, magnetic fields, electric fields, and temperature are examined for their role in driving self-assembly processes. Looking ahead, the review outlines futuristic scopes and perspectives in NA, highlighting emerging trends and potential breakthroughs. Finally, concluding remarks summarize key findings and underscore the significance of NA in shaping future technologies. This comprehensive review serves as a valuable resource for researchers and practitioners, offering insights into the diverse methodologies and potential applications of NA in interdisciplinary research fields.

Self-Regulated Assembly and Disassembly of Gold Nanoparticles for Low-Temperature Time Indication

The color-changing self-assembly and autonomous disassembly of colloidal gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) is reported by simply mixing negatively charged phosphine ligand-capped AuNPs with partially oxidized polyethylene glycol (PEG). The assembly of AuNPs is initiated by PEG adsorption, which disrupts the hydration layer of AuNPs, leading to depletion attraction and reduction of hydration repulsion among the AuNPs. The oxidative species in PEG subsequently oxidize and remove the charged ligands from the AuNP surface, resulting in a decrease and reversal of the negative surface charge. This causes the PEG to adsorb on AuNPs in a tighter and more direct manner, providing strong steric shielding to the AuNPs, thereby triggering the disassembly of the AuNP assemblies. The self-regulated assembly-disassembly process can be tuned widely by controlling chemical conditions of PEG, nanoparticle concentration, and the environmental conditions, suggesting potential applications as colorimetric time-temperature indicators for food and medicine storage conditions. As a proof of concept, it is demonstrated that the lifetime of the color-changing assembly-disassembly process can be extended from tens of minutes to weeks when subjected to a refrigerated environment, with tunability achievable through varying polymer conditions and storage atmospheres.

Hierarchical self-assembly of Au-nanoparticles into filaments: evolution and break

We compare the assembly of individual Au nanoparticles in a vacuum and between two Au(111) surfaces via classical molecular dynamics on a timescale of 100 ns. In a vacuum, the assembly of three nanoparticles used as seeds, initially showing decahedral, truncated octahedral and icosahedral shapes with a diameter of 1.5-1.7 nm, evolves into a spherical object with about 10-12 layers and a gyration radius ∼2.5-2.8 nm. In a vacuum, 42% show just one 5-fold symmetry axis, 33% adopt a defected icosahedral arrangement, and 25% lose all 5-fold symmetry and display a face-centred-cubic shape with several parallel stacking faults. We model a constrained version of the same assembly that takes place between two Au(111) surfaces. During the dynamics, the two Au(111) surfaces are kept fixed at distances of 55 Å, 55.5 Å, 56 Å, and 56.5 Å. The latter distance accommodates 24 Au layers with no strain, while the others correspond to nominal strains of 1.5%, 2.4%, and 3.3%, respectively. In the constrained assembly, each individual seed tends to reorganize into a layered configuration, but the filament may break. The probability of breaking the assembled nanofilament depends on the individual morphology of the seeds. It is more likely to break at the decahedron/icosahedron interface, whilst it is more likely to layer with respect to the (111) orientation when a truncated octahedron sits between the decahedron and the icosahedron. We further observe that nanofilaments between surfaces at 56 Å have a >90% probability of breaking, which decreases to 8% when the surfaces are 55 Å apart. We attribute the dramatic change in probability of breaking to the peculiar decahedron/icosahedron interface and the higher average atomic strain in the nanofilaments. This in silico experiment can shed light on the understanding and control of the formation of metallic nanowires and nanoparticle-assembled networks, which find applications in next-generation electronic devices, such as resistive random access memories and neuromorphic devices.

Nanoengineering Multilength-Scale Porous Hierarchy in Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework Single Crystals

Developing a reliable method for constructing mesoporous metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) with single-crystalline forms remains a challenging task despite numerous efforts. This study presents a solvent-mediated assembly method for fabricating zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) single-crystal nanoparticles with a well-defined micro-mesoporous structure using polystyrene-block-poly(ethylene oxide) diblock copolymer micelles as a soft-template. The precise control of particle sizes, ranging from 85 to 1200 nm, is achieved by regulating nucleation and crystal growth rates while maintaining consistent pore diameters in mesoporous nanoparticles and a rhombohedral dodecahedron morphology. Furthermore, this study presents a robust platform for nanoarchitecturing to prepare hierarchically porous materials (e.g., core-shell and hollow structures), including microporous ZIF@mesoporous ZIF, hollow mesoporous ZIF, and mesoporous ZIF@mesoporous ZIF. Such a multimodal pore design, ranging from microporous to microporous/mesoporous and further micro-/meso-/macroporous, provides significant evidence for the future possibility of the structural design of MOFs.

Predictive Modeling of Nanocrystal Orientation in Superlattices: Insights from Ligand Entropy

The self-assembly of nanocrystals (NCs) into close-packed, ordered superlattices (SLs) is of broad, engineering interest. The coherent orientation of polyhedral nanocrystals within NC SLs enhances electronic, magnetic, and vibrational coupling, leading to a variety of emergent phenomena. Here, we show that coherent orientation of polyhedral NCs in many SLs can be understood simply by considering its effect on the conformational entropy of surface ligands. We report the predicted nanocrystal orientations and entropic driving force to orient for a broad range of nanocrystal shapes and superlattice unit cells, and we show that ligand entropy is sufficient to reproduce a host of reported experimental and computational observations. We additionally use this framework to predict the expected distribution of interstitial species such as solvent or unbound ligands in an oriented NC SL. This work offers intuition for understanding the orientation of NCs in superlattices and a future framework for analyzing multinary structures.

Breathable Wearable Smartsensors Deriving from Interface Self-Assembled Film for Tracking l-Cysteine

The advent of wearable sensors heralds a transformation in the continuous, noninvasive analysis of biomarkers critical for disease diagnosis and fitness management. Yet, their advancement is hindered by the functional challenges affiliated with their active sensing analysis layer. Predominantly due to suboptimal intrinsic material properties and inconsistent dispersion leading to aggregation, thus compromising sensor repeatability and performance. Herein, an innovative approach to the functionalization of wearable electrochemical sensors was introduced, specifically addressing these limitations. The method involves a proton-induced self-assembly technique at the organic-water (O/W) interface, facilitating the generation of biomarker-responsive films. This research offers flexible, breathable sensor capable of real-time precision tracking l-cysteine (l-Cys) precision tracking. Utilizing an activation mechanism for Prussian blue nanoparticles by hydrogen peroxide, the catalytic core exhibits a specific response to l-Cys. The implications of this study refine the fabrication of film-based analysis electrodes for wearable sensing applications and the broader utilization of two-dimensional materials in functional-specific response films. Findings illuminate the feasibility of this novel strategy for precise biomarker tracking and extend to pave the way for constructing high-performance electrocatalytic analytical interfaces.

Emergent Properties from Three-Dimensional Assemblies of (Nano)particles in Confined Spaces

The assembly of (nano)particles into compact hierarchical structures yields emergent properties not found in the individual constituents. The formation of these structures relies on a profound knowledge of the nanoscale interactions between (nano)particles, which are often designed by researchers aided by computational studies. These interactions have an effect when the (nano)particles are brought into close proximity, yet relying only on diffusion to reach these closer distances may be inefficient. Recently, physical confinement has emerged as an efficient methodology to increase the volume fraction of (nano)particles, rapidly accelerating the time scale of assembly. Specifically, the high surface area of droplets of one immiscible fluid into another facilitates the controlled removal of the dispersed phase, resulting in spherical, often ordered, (nano)particle assemblies. In this review, we discuss the design strategies, computational approaches, and assembly methods for (nano)particles in confined spaces and the emergent properties therein, such as trigger-directed assembly, lasing behavior, and structural photonic color. Finally, we provide a brief outlook on the current challenges, both experimental and computational, and farther afield application possibilities.

Choreographing Oscillatory Hydrodynamics with DNA-Coated Gold Nanoparticles

Periodic responses to nonperiodic energy inputs, such as oscillations, are hallmarks of living systems. Nanoparticle-based systems have largely remained unexplored in the generation of oscillatory features. Here, we demonstrate a nanosystem featuring hierarchical response to light, where thermoplasmonic effects and reversible DNA-hybridization generate thermal convective forces and ultimately, oscillatory hydrodynamic flows. The slow aggregation of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) serves as a positive feedback, while fast photothermal disassembly acts as negative feedback. These asymmetric feedback loops, combined with thermal hysteresis for time-delay, are essential ingredients for orchestrating an oscillating response.

Interfacial Hydrogen-Bond Interactions Driven Assembly toward Polychromatic Copper Nanoclusters

Constructing versatile metal nanoclusters (NCs) assemblies through noncovalent weak interactions between inter-ligands is a long-standing challenge in interfacial chemistry, while compelling interfacial hydrogen-bond-driven metal NCs assemblies remain unexplored so far. Here, the study reports an amination-ligand o-phenylenediamine-coordinated copper NCs (CuNCs), demonstrating the impact of interfacial hydrogen-bonds (IHBs) motifs on the luminescent behaviors of metal NCs as the alteration of protic solvent. Experimental results supported by theoretical calculation unveil that the flexibility of interfacial ligand and the distance of cuprophilic CuI···CuI interaction between intra-/inter-NCs can be tailored by manipulating the cooperation between the diverse IHBs motifs reconstruction, therewith the IHBs-modulated fundamental structure-property relationships are established. Importantly, by utilizing the IHBs-mediated optical polychromatism of aminated CuNCs, portable visualization of humidity sensing test-strips with fast response is successfully manufactured. This work not only provides further insights into exploring the interfacial chemistry of NCs based on inter-ligands hydrogen-bond interactions, but also offers a new opportunity to expand the practical application for optical sensing of metal NCs.

Real-Time Direct Monitoring of Chirality Fixation and Recognition at the Single-Molecule Level

Chirality, a fundamental attribute of nature, significantly influences a wide range of phenomena related to physical properties, chemical reactions, biological pharmacology, and so on. As a pivotal aspect of chirality research, chirality recognition contributes to the synthesis of complex chiral products from simple chiral compounds and exhibits intricate interplay between chiral materials. However, macroscopic detection technologies cannot unveil the dynamic process and intrinsic mechanisms of single-molecule chirality recognition. Herein, we present a single-molecule detection platform based on graphene-molecule-graphene single-molecule junctions to measure the chirality recognition involving interactions between amines and chiral alcohols. This approach leads to the realization of in situ and real-time direct observation of chirality recognition at the single-molecule level, demonstrating that chiral alcohols exhibit compelling potential to induce the formation of the corresponding chiral configuration of molecules. The amalgamation of theoretical analyses with experimental findings reveals a synergistic action between electrostatic interactions and steric hindrance effects in the chirality recognition process, thus substantiating the microscopic mechanism governing the chiral structure-activity relationship. These studies open up a pathway for exploring novel chiral phenomena from the fundamental limits of chemistry, such as chiral origin and chiral amplification, and offer important insights into the precise synthesis of chiral materials.

pH-responsive self-assembled nanoparticles for tumor-targeted drug delivery

Recent advances in the field of drug delivery have opened new avenues for the development of novel nanodrug delivery systems (NDDS) in cancer therapy. Self-assembled nanoparticles (SANPs) based on tumour microenvironment have great advantages in improving antitumor effect, and pH-responsive SANPs prepared by the combination of pH-responsive nanomaterials and self-assembly technology can effectively improve the efficacy and reduce the systemic toxicity of antitumor drugs. In this review, we describe the characteristics of self-assembly and its driving force, the mechanism of pH-responsive NDDS, and the nanomaterials for pH-responsive SANPs type. A series of pH-responsive SANPs for tumour-targeted drug delivery are discussed, with an emphasis on the relation between structural features and theranostic performance.

Plasmon-enhanced fluorescence for biophotonics and bio-analytical applications

Fluorescence spectroscopy serves as an ultrasensitive sophisticated tool where background noises which serve as a major impediment to the detection of the desired signals can be safely avoided for detections down to the single-molecule levels. One such way of bypassing background noise is plasmon-enhanced fluorescence (PEF), where the interactions of fluorophores at the surface of metals or plasmonic nanoparticles are probed. The underlying condition is a significant spectral overlap between the localized surface plasmon resonance (LSPR) of the nanoparticle and the absorption or emission spectra of the fluorophore. The rationale being the coupling of the excited state of the fluorophore with the localized surface plasmon leads to an augmented emission, owing to local field enhancement. It is manifested in enhanced quantum yields concurrent with a decrease in fluorescence lifetimes, owing to an increase in radiative rate constants. This improvement in detection provided by PEF allows a significant scope of expansion in the domain of weakly emitting fluorophores which otherwise would have remained unperceivable. The concept of coupling of weak emitters with plasmons can bypass the problems of photobleaching, opening up avenues of imaging with significantly higher sensitivity and improved resolution. Furthermore, amplification of the emission signal by the coupling of free electrons of the metal nanoparticles with the electrons of the fluorophore provides ample opportunities for achieving lower detection limits that are involved in biological imaging and molecular sensing. One avenue that has attracted significant attraction in the last few years is the fast, label-free detection of bio-analytes under physiological conditions using plasmonic nanoparticles for point-of-care analysis. This review focusses on the applications of plasmonic nanomaterials in the field of biosensing, imaging with a brief introduction on the different aspects of LSPR and fabrication techniques.

Dynamic Transformation of High-Architectural Nanocrystal Superlattices upon Solvent Molecule Exposure

The cluster-based body-centered-cubic superlattice (cBCC SL) represents one of the most complicated structures among reported nanocrystal assemblies, comprised of 72 truncated tetrahedral quantum dots per unit cell. Our previous report revealed that truncated tetrahedral quantum dots within cBCC SLs possessed highly controlled translational and orientational order owing to an unusual energetic landscape based on the balancing of entropic and enthalpic contributions during the assembly process. However, the cBCC SL's structural transformability and mechanical properties, uniquely originating from such complicated nanostructures, have yet to be investigated. Herein, we report that cBCC SLs can undergo dynamic transformation to face-centered-cubic SLs in response to post-assembly molecular exposure. We monitored the dynamic transformation process using in situ synchrotron-based small-angle X-ray scattering, revealing a dynamic transformation involving multiple steps underpinned by interactions between incoming molecules and TTQDs' surface ligands. Furthermore, our mechanistic study demonstrated that the precise configuration of TTQDs' ligand molecules in cBCC SLs was key to their high structural transformability and unique jelly-like soft mechanical properties. While ligand molecular configurations in nanocrystal SLs are often considered minor features, our findings emphasize their significance in controlling weak van der Waals interactions between nanocrystals within assembled SLs, leading to previously unremarked superstructural transformability and unique mechanical properties. Our findings promote a facile route toward further creation of soft materials, nanorobotics, and out-of-equilibrium assemblies based on nanocrystal building blocks.

Hierarchically Responsive Alternating Nano-Copolymers with Tailored Interparticle Bonds

Self-assembly of inorganic nanoparticles (NPs) is an essential tool for constructing structured materials with a wide range of applications. However, achieving ordered assembly structures with externally programmable properties in binary NP systems remains challenging. In this work, we assemble binary inorganic NPs into hierarchically pH-responsive alternating copolymer-like nanostructures in an aqueous medium by engineering the interparticle electrostatic interactions. The polymer-grafted NPs bearing opposite charges are viewed as nanoscale monomers ("nanomers"), and copolymerized into alternating nano-copolymers (ANCPs) driven by the formation of interparticle "bonds" between nanomers. The resulting ANCPs exhibit reversibly responsive "bond" length (i.e., the distance between nanomers) in response to the variation of pH in a range of ~7-10, allowing precise control over the surface plasmon resonance of ANCPs. Moreover, specific interparticle "bonds" can break up at pH≥11, leading to the dis-assembly of ANCPs into molecule-like dimers and trimers. These dimeric and trimeric structures can reassemble to form ANCPs owing to the resuming of interparticle "bonds", when the pH value of the solution changes from 11 to 7. The hierarchically responsive nanostructures may find applications in such as biosensing, optical waveguide, and electronic devices.

Three-body interaction of gold nanoparticles: the role of solvent density and ligand shell orientation

Molecular dynamics simulations are used to study the effective interactions of alkanethiol passivated gold nanoparticles in supercritical ethane at two- and three-particle levels with different solvent densities. Effective interaction is calculated as the potential of mean force (PMF) between two nanoparticles, and the three-body effect is estimated as the difference in PMFs calculated at the two- and three-particle levels. The variation in the three-body effect is examined as a function of solvent density. It is found that effective interaction, which is completely repulsive at very high solvent concentrations, progressively turns attractive as solvent density declines. On the other hand, the three-body effect turns out to be repulsive and increases exponentially with decreasing solvent density. Further, the structure of the ligand shell is analyzed as a function of nanoparticle separation, and its relationship with the three-body effect is investigated. It is observed that the three-body effect arises when the ligand shell begins to deform due to van der Waals repulsion between ligand shells. The study provides a deep insight into good understanding of the solvent evaporation-assisted nanoparticle self-assembly and can aid in experiments.

Ordered hierarchical superlattice amplifies coated-CeO2 nanoparticles luminescence

Achieving a controlled preparation of nanoparticle superstructures with spatially periodic arrangement, also called superlattices, is one of the most intriguing and open questions in soft matter science. The interest in such regular superlattices originates from the potentialities in tailoring the physicochemical properties of the individual constituent nanoparticles, eventually leading to emerging behaviors and/or functionalities that are not exhibited by the initial building blocks. Despite progress, it is currently difficult to obtain such ordered structures; the influence of parameters, such as size, softness, interaction potentials, and entropy, are neither fully understood yet and not sufficiently studied for 3D systems. In this work, we describe the synthesis and characterization of spatially ordered hierarchical structures of coated cerium oxide nanoparticles in water suspension prepared by a bottom-up approach. Covering the CeO2 surface with amphiphilic molecules having chains of appropriate length makes it possible to form ordered structures in which the particles occupy well-defined positions. In the present case superlattice arrangement is accompanied by an improvement in photoluminescence (PL) efficiency, as an increase in PL intensity of the superlattice structure of up to 400 % compared with that of randomly dispersed nanoparticles was observed. To the best of our knowledge, this is one of the first works in the literature in which the coexistence of 3D structures in solution, such as face-centered cubic (FCC) and Frank-Kasper (FK) phases, of semiconductor nanoparticles have been related to their optical properties.

Hierarchical assembly is more robust than egalitarian assembly in synthetic capsids

Self-assembly of complex and functional materials remains a grand challenge in soft material science. Efficient assembly depends on a delicate balance between thermodynamic and kinetic effects, requiring fine-tuning affinities and concentrations of subunits. By contrast, we introduce an assembly paradigm that allows large error-tolerance in the subunit affinity and helps avoid kinetic traps. Our combined experimental and computational approach uses a model system of triangular subunits programmed to assemble into T = 3 icosahedral capsids comprising 60 units. The experimental platform uses DNA origami to create monodisperse colloids whose three-dimensional geometry is controlled to nanometer precision, with two distinct bonds whose affinities are controlled to kBT precision, quantified in situ by static light scattering. The computational model uses a coarse-grained representation of subunits, short-ranged potentials, and Langevin dynamics. Experimental observations and modeling reveal that when the bond affinities are unequal, two distinct hierarchical assembly pathways occur, in which the subunits first form dimers in one case and pentamers in another. These hierarchical pathways produce complete capsids faster and are more robust against affinity variation than egalitarian pathways, in which all binding sites have equal strengths. This finding suggests that hierarchical assembly may be a general engineering principle for optimizing self-assembly of complex target structures.

Polyoxometalate Induced Assembly Into Surface Functionalized Multidimensional Heterostructures with Enhanced Catalytic Activity

The self-assembly of inorganic nanocrystals offers an efficient way for the fabrication of functional materials. However, it is still challenging for the construction of multidimensional nanostructures with controllable shapes, compositions and functions. Here, a series of heterostructures in different dimensions by surface modification of polyoxometalate (POM) clusters is developed. Three kinds of POM clusters (phosphomolybdic acid (PMA), phosphotungstic acid (PTA) and silicotungstic acid (STA) and five kinds of metal oxides (TiO2 , VOx , La2 O3 , In2 O3 and Gd2 O3 ) can be used as building blocks, and a class of 1D, 2D and 3D heterostructures can be achieved by the control of surface ligand coverage. Compared with individual building blocks and other cluster-based superstructures, TiO2 -PMA superstructures exhibit enhanced catalytic activity toward thioether oxidations, which is attributed to the electron transfer between TiO2 and POM clusters.

Exploring HCl-HCl interactions: QZVPP calculations, improved Lennard-Jones potential, and second virial coefficient analysis for thermodynamics and industrial applications

In this paper, we present a comprehensive analysis of HCl-HCl interactions, including QZVPP calculations, energy fitting, conformation validation, and the determination of the second virial coefficient B using improved Lennard-Jones (ILJ) potential parameters. To acquire accurate interaction energies, initial QZVPP calculations are performed on approximately 1851 randomly generated HCl-HCl conformations. Then, these energies are used to fit an improved Lennard-Jones potential energy surface, allowing for a robust description of HCl-HCl interactions. The ILJ potential parameters are then used to validate particular HCl dimer conformations, ensuring their stability and consistency with experimental observations. The correlation between calculated and experimental conformations strengthens the validity of the ILJ potential parameters. In addition, the second viral coefficient B is calculated at various temperatures using the ILJ potential. The obtained B values are compared to experimental data, demonstrating close agreement, and validating the ILJ potential's ability to accurately capture the intermolecular interactions and gas-phase behavior of the HCl-HCl system. The results of this study demonstrate the effective implementation of QZVPP calculations, energy fitting, and ILJ potential parameters in validating HCl-HCl conformations and accurately determining the second virial coefficient B. The high degree of concordance between calculated B values and experimental data demonstrates the validity of the ILJ potential and its suitability for modeling HCl-HCl interactions. This research contributes to a greater comprehension of HCl-HCl interactions and their implications for numerous chemical and atmospheric processes. The validated conformations, energy fitting method, and calculated second virial coefficients provide valuable instruments for future research and pave the way for more accurate modeling and simulations of HCl-HCl systems.

Photoluminescence switching in quantum dots connected with fluorinated and hydrogenated photochromic molecules

We investigate switching of photoluminescence (PL) from PbS quantum dots (QDs) crosslinked with two different types of photochromic diarylethene molecules, 4,4'-(1-cyclopentene-1,2-diyl)bis[5-methyl-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid] (1H) and 4,4'-(1-perfluorocyclopentene-1,2-diyl)bis[5-methyl-2-thiophenecarboxylic acid] (2F). Our results show that the QDs crosslinked with the hydrogenated molecule (1H) exhibit a greater amount of switching in photoluminescence intensity compared to QDs crosslinked with the fluorinated molecule (2F). With a combination of differential pulse voltammetry and density functional theory, we attribute the different amount of PL switching to the different energy levels between 1H and 2F molecules which result in different potential barrier heights across adjacent QDs. Our findings provide a deeper understanding of how the energy levels of bridge molecules influence charge tunneling and PL switching performance in QD systems and offer deeper insights for the future design and development of QD based photo-switches.

Fabrication of Oriented Polycrystalline MOF Superstructures

The field of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has progressed beyond the design and exploration of powdery and single-crystalline materials. A current challenge is the fabrication of organized superstructures that can harness the directional properties of the individual constituent MOF crystals. To date, the progress in the fabrication methods of polycrystalline MOF superstructures has led to close-packed structures with defined crystalline orientation. By controlling the crystalline orientation, the MOF pore channels of the constituent crystals can be aligned along specific directions: these systems possess anisotropic properties including enhanced diffusion along specific directions, preferential orientation of guest species, and protection of functional guests. In this perspective, we discuss the current status of MOF research in the fabrication of oriented polycrystalline superstructures focusing on the specific crystalline directions of orientation. Three methods are examined in detail: the assembly from colloidal MOF solutions, the use of external fields for the alignment of MOF particles, and the heteroepitaxial ceramic-to-MOF growth. This perspective aims at promoting the progress of this field of research and inspiring the development of new protocols for the preparation of MOF systems with oriented pore channels, to enable advanced MOF-based devices with anisotropic properties.

Controlling the Morphology in Electrostatic Self-Assembly via Light

Electrostatic self-assembly of macroions is an emerging area with great potential in the development of nanoscale functional objects, where photo-irradiation responsiveness can either elevate or suppress the self-assembly. The ability to control the size and shape of macroion assemblies would greatly facilitate the fabrication of desired nano-objects that can be harnessed in various applications such as catalysis, drug delivery, bio-sensors, and actuators. Here, we demonstrate that a polyelectrolyte with a size of 5 nm and multivalent counterions with a size of 1 nm can produce well-defined nanostructures ranging in size from 10-1000 nm in an aqueous environment by utilizing the concept of electrostatic self-assembly and other intermolecular non-covalent interactions including dipole-dipole interactions. The pH- and photoresponsiveness of polyelectrolytes and azo dyes provide diverse parameters to tune the nanostructures. Our findings demonstrate a facile approach to fabricating and manipulating self-assembled nanoparticles using light and neutron scattering techniques.

Controlling the counterintuitive optical repulsive thrust of nano dimers with counter propagating type waves and background medium

This work focuses on the utilization of counter-propagating plane waves for optical manipulation, which provides a unique approach to control the behavior of Rayleigh and Dipolar nanoparticles immersed in a homogeneous or heterogeneous medium. Our study presents an interesting finding of a repulsive force between plasmonic-chiral heterodimers where the particles move away from each other in both near and far field regions. Interestingly, this repulsive thrust supports the wave like nature of light for the case of homogeneous background but particle type nature of light for heterogenous background. At first, we have investigated the theory underlying the optical trapping of the chiral particle and the impact of this phenomenon on the overall repulsive behavior of the heterodimers placed in air (homogeneous) background. After that, our proposed set-up has further been investigated putting in air-water interface (heterogenous background) and by varying light angle only a little bit. Our observation for this interface case is suggesting the transfer of Minkowski momentum of photon to each optically pulled Rayleigh or dipolar particle of the dimer set, which ultimately causes a broad-band giant repulsive thrust of the dimers. However, in absence of the other particle in the cluster, a single half-immersed particle does not experience the pulling force for the broad-band spectrum. The 'common' reason of the observed repulsive thrust of the dimers for both the aforementioned cases has been attributed to "modified" longitudinal Optical Binding Force (OBF). Technically, this work may open a new way to control the repulsion and attraction between the nanoparticles both in near and far field regions by utilizing the background and the counter-propagating waves. We also believe that this work manifests a possible simple set-up, which will support to observe a background dependent wave 'or' particle nature of light experimentally.

Synthetic Strategies for the Selective Functionalization of Carbon Nanodots Allow Optically Communicating Suprastructures

The surface of Carbon Nanodots (CNDs) stands as a rich chemical platform, able to regulate the interactions between particles and external species. Performing selective functionalization of these nanoscale entities is of practical importance, however, it still represents a considerable challenge. In this work, we exploited the organic chemistry toolbox to install target functionalities on the CND surface, while monitoring the chemical changes on the material's outer shell through nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Following this, we investigated the use of click chemistry to covalently connect CNDs of different nature en-route towards covalent suprastructures with unprecedent molecular control. The different photophysical properties of the connected particles allowed their optical communication in the excited state. This work paves the way for the development of selective and addressable CND building blocks which can act as modular nanoscale synthons that mirror the long-established reactivity of molecular organic synthesis.

Self-assembled photonic cavities with atomic-scale confinement

Despite tremendous progress in research on self-assembled nanotechnological building blocks, such as macromolecules1, nanowires2 and two-dimensional materials3, synthetic self-assembly methods that bridge the nanoscopic to macroscopic dimensions remain unscalable and inferior to biological self-assembly. By contrast, planar semiconductor technology has had an immense technological impact, owing to its inherent scalability, yet it seems unable to reach the atomic dimensions enabled by self-assembly. Here, we use surface forces, including Casimir-van der Waals interactions4, to deterministically self-assemble and self-align suspended silicon nanostructures with void features well below the length scales possible with conventional lithography and etching5, despite using only conventional lithography and etching. The method is remarkably robust and the threshold for self-assembly depends monotonically on all the governing parameters across thousands of measured devices. We illustrate the potential of these concepts by fabricating nanostructures that are impossible to make with any other known method: waveguide-coupled high-Q silicon photonic cavities6,7 that confine telecom photons to 2 nm air gaps with an aspect ratio of 100, corresponding to mode volumes more than 100 times below the diffraction limit. Scanning transmission electron microscopy measurements confirm the ability to build devices with sub-nanometre dimensions. Our work constitutes the first steps towards a new generation of fabrication technology that combines the atomic dimensions enabled by self-assembly with the scalability of planar semiconductors.

Size Segregation of Gold Nanoparticles into Bilayer-like Vesicular Assembly

Size segregation of nanoparticles with different sizes into highly ordered, unique nanostructures is important for their practical applications. Herein, we demonstrate spontaneous self-assembly of the binary mixtures of small and large gold nanoparticles (GNPs; 5/15, 5/20, or 10/20 in diameter) in the presence of a tetra(ethylene glycol)-terminated octafluoro-4,4'-biphenol ligand, namely, TeOFBL, resulting in a size-segregated assembly. The outer single layer of large GNPs forming a gold nanoparticle vesicle (GNV) encapsulated the inner vesicle-like assembly composed of small GNPs, which is referred to as bilayer-like GNV and similar to the molecular bilayer structure of a liposome. The size segregation was driven by the solvophobic feature of the TeOFBLs on the surface of GNPs. A time-course study indicated that size segregation occurred instantaneously during the mixing stage of the self-organization process. The size-segregated precursors quickly fused with each other through the inner-inner and outer-outer layer fashion to form the bilayer-like GNV. This study provides a new approach to creating biomimetic bilayer capsules with different physical properties for potential applications such as surface-enhanced Raman scattering and drug delivery.

Two-dimensional assembly of gold nanoparticles grafted with charged-end-group polymers

HYPOTHESIS

Introducing charged terminal groups to polymers that graft nanoparticles enable Coulombic control over their assembly by tuning the pH and salinity of their aqueous suspensions.

EXPERIMENTS

Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are grafted with poly (ethylene glycol) (PEG) terminated with (charge-neutral), (negatively charged) or groups (positively charged), and characterized with dynamic light scattering, ζ-potential, and thermal gravimetric analysis. Liquid surface X-ray reflectivity (XR) and grazing incidence small-angle X-ray scattering (GISAXS) are used to determine the density profile and in-plane structure of the AuNPs assembly at the aqueous surface.

FINDINGS

Assembly of PEG-AuNPs at the liquid/vapor interface is tunable by adjusting pH or salinity for COOH but less for terminals. The distinct assembly behaviors are attributed to the overall charge of PEG-AuNPs as well as PEG conformation. COOH-PEG corona is more compact than those of the other terminal groups, leading to a crystalline structure with a smaller superlattice. The net charge per particle depends not only on the PEG terminal groups but also on the cation sequestration of PEG and the intrinsic negative charge of the AuNP surface. [1] The closeness to overall charge neutrality, and hydrogen bonding in play, brought by -PEG, drive -PEG-AuNPs to assembly and crystallinity without additives to the suspensions.

Confinement Effects on the Structure of Entropy-Induced Supercrystals

Depletion-induced self-assembly is routinely used to separate plasmonic nanoparticles (NPs) of different shapes, but less often for its ability to create supercrystals (SCs) in suspension. Therefore, these plasmonic assemblies have not yet reached a high level of maturity and their in-depth characterization by a combination of in situ techniques is still very much needed. In this work, gold triangles (AuNTs) and silver nanorods (AgNRs) are assembled by depletion-induced self-assembly. Small Angle X-ray Scattering (SAXS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the AuNTs and AgNRs form 3D and 2D hexagonal lattices in bulk, respectively. The colloidal crystals are also imaged by in situ Liquid-Cell Transmission Electron Microscopy. Under confinement, the affinity of the NPs for the liquid cell windows reduces their ability to stack perpendicularly to the membrane and lead to SCs with a lower dimensionality than their bulk counterparts. Moreover, extended beam irradiation leads to disassembly of the lattices, which is well described by a model accounting for the desorption kinetics highlighting the key role of the NP-membrane interaction in the structural properties of SCs in the liquid-cell. The results shed light on the reconfigurability of NP superlattices obtained by depletion-induced self-assembly, which can rearrange under confinement.

Oppositely Charged Nanoparticles Precipitate Not Only at the Point of Overall Electroneutrality

Precipitation of oppositely charged entities is a common phenomenon in nature and laboratories. Precipitation and crystallization of oppositely charged ions are well-studied and understood processes in chemistry. However, much less is known about the precipitation properties of oppositely charged nanoparticles. Recently, it was demonstrated that oppositely charged gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), also called nanoions, decorated with positively or negatively charged thiol groups precipitate only at the point of electroneutrality of the sample (i.e., the charges on the particles are balanced). Here we demonstrate that the precipitation of oppositely AuNPs can occur not only at the point of electroneutrality. The width of the precipitation window depends on the size and concentration of the nanoparticles. This behavior can be explained by the aggregation of partially stabilized clusters reaching the critical size for their sedimentation in the gravitational field.

Stimulus-responsive nonclose-packed photonic crystals: fabrications and applications

Stimulus-responsive photonic crystals (PCs) possessing unconventional nonclosely packed structures have received growing attention due to their unique capability of mimicking the active structural colors of natural organisms (for example, chameleons' mechanochromic properties). However, there is rarely any systematic review regarding the progress of nonclose-packed photonic crystals (NPCs), involving their fabrication, working mechanisms, and applications. Herein, a comprehensive review of the fundamental principles and practical fabrication strategies of one/two/three-dimensional NPCs is summarized from the perspective of designing nonclose-packed structures. Subsequently, responsive NPCs with exciting functions and working mechanisms are sorted and delineated according to their diverse responses to physical (force, temperature, magnetic, and electric fields), chemical (ions, pH, vapors, and solvents), and biological (glucose, organophosphate, creatinine, and bacteria) stimuli. We then systematically introduced and discussed the applications of NPCs in sensors, printing, anticounterfeiting, display, optical devices, etc. Finally, the current challenges and development prospects for NPCs are presented. This review not only concludes the design principle for NPCs but also provides a significant basis for the exploration of next-generation NPCs.

Biogenetic Vesicle-Based Cancer Vaccines with Tunable Surface Potential and Immune Potency

Cancer vaccines are designed to motivate antigen-specific immune responses and facilitate tumor regression with minimal side effects. To fully exert the potential of vaccines, rationally designed formulations that effectively deliver antigens and trigger potent immune reactions are urgently needed. This study demonstrates a simple and controllable vaccine-developing strategy that assembles tumor antigens into bacterial outer membrane vesicles (OMVs), natural delivery vehicles with intrinsic immune adjuvant properties, via electrostatic interaction. This OMV-delivered vaccine (OMVax) stimulated both innate and adaptive immune responses, leading to enhanced metastasis inhibition and prolonged survival of tumor-bearing mice. Moreover, the influence of different surface charged OMVax on antitumor immunity activation is investigated and declined immune response activation occurred with increased positive surface charge. Together, these findings suggest a simple vaccine formulation that can be enhanced by optimizing the surface charges of vaccine formulations.

Dumbbells, chains, and ribbons: anisotropic self-assembly of isotropic nanoparticles

Functionalizing the surface of metal nanoparticles can assure their stability in solution or mediate their self-assembly into aggregates with controlled shapes. Here we present a computational study of the colloidal aggregation of gold nanoparticles (Au NPs) isotropically functionalized by a mixture of charged and hydrophobic ligands. We show that, by varying the relative proportion of the two ligands, the NPs form anisotropic aggregates with markedly different topologies: dumbbells, chains, or ribbons. In all cases, two kinds of connections keep the aggregates together: hydrophobic bonds and ion bridges. We show that the anisotropy of the aggregates derives from the NP shell reshaping due to the formation of the hydrophobic links, while ion bridges are accountable for the "secondary structure" of the aggregates. Our findings provide a general physical principle that can also be exploited in different self-assembled systems: anisotropic/directional aggregation can be achieved starting from isotropic objects with a soft, deformable surface.

Visualizing interfacial collective reaction behaviour of Li-S batteries

Benefiting from high energy density (2,600 Wh kg-1) and low cost, lithium-sulfur (Li-S) batteries are considered promising candidates for advanced energy-storage systems1-4. Despite tremendous efforts in suppressing the long-standing shuttle effect of lithium polysulfides5-7, understanding of the interfacial reactions of lithium polysulfides at the nanoscale remains elusive. This is mainly because of the limitations of in situ characterization tools in tracing the liquid-solid conversion of unstable lithium polysulfides at high temporal-spatial resolution8-10. There is an urgent need to understand the coupled phenomena inside Li-S batteries, specifically, the dynamic distribution, aggregation, deposition and dissolution of lithium polysulfides. Here, by using in situ liquid-cell electrochemical transmission electron microscopy, we directly visualized the transformation of lithium polysulfides over electrode surfaces at the atomic scale. Notably, an unexpected gathering-induced collective charge transfer of lithium polysulfides was captured on the nanocluster active-centre-immobilized surface. It further induced an instantaneous deposition of nonequilibrium Li2S nanocrystals from the dense liquid phase of lithium polysulfides. Without mediation of active centres, the reactions followed a classical single-molecule pathway, lithium polysulfides transforming into Li2S2 and Li2S step by step. Molecular dynamics simulations indicated that the long-range electrostatic interaction between active centres and lithium polysulfides promoted the formation of a dense phase consisting of Li+ and Sn2- (2 < n ≤ 6), and the collective charge transfer in the dense phase was further verified by ab initio molecular dynamics simulations. The collective interfacial reaction pathway unveils a new transformation mechanism and deepens the fundamental understanding of Li-S batteries.

Self-assembled nanoformulations of paclitaxel for enhanced cancer theranostics

Chemotherapy has occupied the critical position in cancer therapy, especially towards the post-operative, advanced, recurrent, and metastatic tumors. Paclitaxel (PTX)-based formulations have been widely used in clinical practice, while the therapeutic effect is far from satisfied due to off-target toxicity and drug resistance. The caseless multi-components make the preparation technology complicated and aggravate the concerns with the excipients-associated toxicity. The self-assembled PTX nanoparticles possess a high drug content and could incorporate various functional molecules for enhancing the therapeutic index. In this work, we summarize the self-assembly strategy for diverse nanodrugs of PTX. Then, the advancement of nanodrugs for tumor therapy, especially emphasis on mono-chemotherapy, combinational therapy, and theranostics, have been outlined. Finally, the challenges and potential improvements have been briefly spotlighted.

Active Colloids as Models, Materials, and Machines

Active colloids use energy input at the particle level to propel persistent motion and direct dynamic assemblies. We consider three types of colloids animated by chemical reactions, time-varying magnetic fields, and electric currents. For each type, we review the basic propulsion mechanisms at the particle level and discuss their consequences for collective behaviors in particle ensembles. These microscopic systems provide useful experimental models of nonequilibrium many-body physics in which dissipative currents break time-reversal symmetry. Freed from the constraints of thermodynamic equilibrium, active colloids assemble to form materials that move, reconfigure, heal, and adapt. Colloidal machines based on engineered particles and their assemblies provide a basis for mobile robots with increasing levels of autonomy. This review provides a conceptual framework for understanding and applying active colloids to create material systems that mimic the functions of living matter. We highlight opportunities for chemical engineers to contribute to this growing field.

Formation of a traditional Chinese medicine self-assembly nanostrategy and its application in cancer: a promising treatment

Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) has been used for centuries to prevent and treat a variety of illnesses, and its popularity is increasing worldwide. However, the clinical applications of natural active components in TCM are hindered by the poor solubility and low bioavailability of these compounds. To address these issues, Chinese medicine self-assembly nanostrategy (CSAN) is being developed. Many active components of TCM possess self-assembly properties, allowing them to form nanoparticles (NPs) through various noncovalent forces. Self-assembled NPs (SANs) are also present in TCM decoctions, and they are closely linked to the therapeutic effects of these remedies. SAN is gaining popularity in the nano research field due to its simplicity, eco-friendliness, and enhanced biodegradability and biocompatibility compared to traditional nano preparation methods. The self-assembly of active ingredients from TCM that exhibit antitumour effects or are combined with other antitumour drugs has generated considerable interest in the field of cancer therapeutics. This paper provides a review of the principles and forms of CSAN, as well as an overview of recent reports on TCM that can be used for self-assembly. Additionally, the application of CSAN in various cancer diseases is summarized, and finally, a concluding summary and thoughts are proposed. We strongly believe that CSAN has the potential to offer fresh strategies and perspectives for the modernization of TCM.

Advances in Enantiomer-Dependent Nanotherapeutics

The nanoscale properties of nanomaterials, especially nanoparticles, including size, shape, and surface charge, have been extensively studied for their impact on nanomedicine. Given the inherent chiral nature of biological systems and their high enantiomeric selectivity, there is rising interest to manipulate the chirality of nanomaterials to enhance their biomolecular interactions and improve nanotherapeutics. Chiral nanostructures are currently more prevalently used in biosensing and diagnostic applications owing to their distinctive physical and optical properties, but they hold great promise for use in nanomedicine. In this Review, we first discuss stereospecific interactions between chiral nanomaterials and biomolecules before comparing the synthesis and characterization methods of chiral nanoparticles and nanoassemblies. Finally, we examine the applications of chiral nanotherapeutics in cancer, immunomodulation, and neurodegenerative diseases and propose plausible mechanisms in which chiral nanomaterials interact with cells for biological manipulation. This Review on chirality is a timely reminder of the arsenal of nanoscale modifications to boost research in nanotherapeutics.

Nanoparticle Self-Assembly: From Design Principles to Complex Matter to Functional Materials

The creation of matter with varying degrees of complexities and desired functions is one of the ultimate targets of self-assembly. The ability to regulate the complex interactions between the individual components is essential in achieving this target. In this direction, the initial success of controlling the pathways and final thermodynamic states of a self-assembly process is promising. Despite the progress made in the field, there has been a growing interest in pushing the limits of self-assembly processes. The main inception of this interest is that the intended self-assembled state, with varying complexities, may not be "at equilibrium (or at global minimum)", rendering free energy minimization unsuitable to form the desired product. Thus, we believe that a thorough understanding of the design principles as well as the ability to predict the outcome of a self-assembly process is essential to form a collection of the next generation of complex matter. The present review highlights the potent role of finely tuned interparticle interactions in nanomaterials to achieve the preferred self-assembled structures with the desired properties. We believe that bringing the design and prediction to nanoparticle self-assembly processes will have a similar effect as retrosynthesis had on the logic of chemical synthesis. Along with the guiding principles, the review gives a summary of the different types of products created from nanoparticle assemblies and the functional properties emerging from them. Finally, we highlight the reasonable expectations from the field and the challenges lying ahead in the creation of complex and evolvable matter.

Reconfigurable pH-Responsive DNA Origami Lattices

DNA nanotechnology enables straightforward fabrication of user-defined and nanometer-precise templates for a cornucopia of different uses. To date, most of these DNA assemblies have been static, but dynamic structures are increasingly coming into view. The programmability of DNA not only allows for encoding of the DNA object shape but also it may be equally used in defining the mechanism of action and the type of stimuli-responsiveness of the dynamic structures. However, these "robotic" features of DNA nanostructures are usually demonstrated for only small, discrete, and device-like objects rather than for collectively behaving higher-order systems. Here, we show how a large-scale, two-dimensional (2D) and pH-responsive DNA origami-based lattice can be assembled into two different configurations ("open" and "closed" states) on a mica substrate and further switched from one to the other distinct state upon a pH change of the surrounding solution. The control over these two configurations is achieved by equipping the arms of the lattice-forming DNA origami units with "pH-latches" that form Hoogsteen-type triplexes at low pH. In short, we demonstrate how the electrostatic control over the adhesion and mobility of the DNA origami units on the surface can be used both in the large lattice formation (with the help of directed polymerization) and in the conformational switching of the whole lattice. To further emphasize the feasibility of the method, we also demonstrate the formation of pH-responsive 2D gold nanoparticle lattices. We believe this work can bridge the nanometer-precise DNA origami templates and higher-order large-scale systems with the stimuli-induced dynamicity.

Oriented attachment interfaces of zeolitic imidazolate framework nanocrystals

Understanding the growth and coarsening mechanisms of metal-organic framework (MOF) nanoparticles is crucially important for the design and fabrication of MOF materials with diverse functionalities and controllable stability. Oriented attachment (OA) growth is a common manner of MOF nanocrystal coarsening and agglomeration, but the underlying molecular mechanisms have not been well understood to date. Here we report the molecular-scale characterization of the OA interfaces of zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) crystals by state-of-the-art low-dose aberration-corrected transmission electron microscopy. A series of OA interfaces with different molecular structures are captured, implying that multiple kinetic steps are involved in the OA growth of ZIF crystals from non-directional physical attractions between primary nanocrystals, lattice-aligned attachment of the ligand-capped nanocrystals, to coherent interfaces with perfect lattice alignment or stacking faults. It was found that the surface-capping organic ligands not only play an essential role in crystal lattice alignment by near-field directional interactions, but also dominate the interfacial reaction kinetics by interfacial diffusion-controlled elimination of excess surface-capping ligands. These observations provide molecular-scale insights into the OA growth mechanisms of ZIF crystals, which is important for engineering MOF crystal growth pathways by designing surface-capping ligands.

From Nanoscopic to Macroscopic Materials by Stimuli-Responsive Nanoparticle Aggregation

Stimuli-responsive nanoparticle (NP) aggregation plays an increasingly important role in regulating NP assembly into microscopic superstructures, macroscopic 2D, and 3D functional materials. Diverse external stimuli are widely used to adjust the aggregation of responsive NPs, such as light, temperature, pH, electric, and magnetic fields. Many unique structures based on responsive NPs are constructed including disordered aggregates, ordered superlattices, structural droplets, colloidosomes, and bulk solids. In this review, the strategies for NP aggregation by external stimuli, and their recent progress ranging from nanoscale aggregates, microscale superstructures to macroscale bulk materials along the length scales as well as their applications are summarized. The future opportunities and challenges for designing functional materials through NP aggregation at different length scales are also discussed.

Directed colloidal assembly and banding via DC electrokinetics

Manipulating the transport and assembly of colloidal particles to form segregated bands or ordered supracolloidal structures plays an important role in many aspects of science and technology, from understanding the origin of life to synthesizing new materials for next-generation manufacturing, electronics, and therapeutics. One commonly used method to direct colloidal transport and assembly is the application of electric fields, either AC or DC, due to its feasibility. However, as colloidal segregation and assembly both require active redistribution of colloidal particles across multiple length scales, it is not apparent at first sight how a DC electric field, either externally applied or internally induced, can lead to colloidal structuring. In this Perspective, we briefly review and highlight recent advances and standing challenges in colloidal transport and assembly enabled by DC electrokinetics.

Self-assembled micropillar arrays via near-field electrospinning

Self-assembly in near-field electrospinning is reported for the first time in this paper, which realized the conversion from two-dimensional planar printing to three-dimensional (3D) structures. Repeatedly stacked fibres formed a micropillar array structure (MPAS) with intervals on the deposition paths by adding carbonyl iron powder particles to a polyethylene oxide (PEO) solution. The growth process of the self-assembled MPAS is documented, and the mechanism of the self-assembled MPAS is proposed. In addition, the effects of substrate speed and injection speed on self-assembly were investigated. Electric field distribution simulations show that the electric field strength around the MPAS is enhanced by nearly ten times so that the micropillar can attract the jet for further deposition. Self-assembly can obtain MPASs with arbitrary paths on different substrates, and the interval of the MPAS can be controlled by using bulging substrates. Furthermore, a self-assembled MPAS has been successfully used to prepare mold cavities, which can be used to prepare MPASs of other materials. Due to their small feature size, large surface area and structural periodicity, micropillar arrays will have promising applications, such as hydrophobicity of surfaces and electrochemical detection. Self-assembly in near-field electrospinning can significantly reduce the preparation cost of an MPAS and provide new processes and ideas.

Effect of Hydrophobic Moieties on the Assembly of Silica Particles into Colloidal Crystals

To boost the implementation of colloidal crystals (CCs) in separation science, the effects of the most common chromatographic reversed phases, that is, butyl and octadecyl, on the assembly of silica particles into CCs and on the optical properties of CCs are investigated. Interestingly, particle surface modification can cause phase separation during sedimentation because the assembly is highly sensitive to minute changes in surface characteristics. Solvent-induced surface charge generation through acid-base interactions of acidic residual silanol groups with the solvent is enough to promote colloidal crystallization of modified silica particles. In addition, solvation forces at small interparticle distances are also involved in colloidal assembly. The characterization of CCs formed during sedimentation or via evaporative assembly revealed that C4 particles can form CCs more easily than C18 particles because of their low hydrophobicity; the latter can only form CCs in tetrahydrofuran when C18 chains with a high bonding density have extra hydroxyl side groups. These groups can only be hydrolyzed from trifunctional octadecyl silane but not from a monofunctional one. Moreover, after evaporative assembly, CCs formed from particles with different surface moieties exhibit different lattice spacings because their surface hydrophobicity and chemical heterogeneity can modulate interparticle interactions during the two main stages of assembly: the wet stage of crystal growth and the late stage of nano dewetting (evaporation of interparticle solvent bridges). Finally, short, alkyl-modified CCs were effectively assembled inside silica capillaries with a 100 μm inner diameter, laying the foundation for future chromatographic separation using capillary columns.

Precision Nanocluster-Based Toroidal and Supertoroidal Frameworks Using Photocycloaddition-Assisted Dynamic Covalent Chemistry

Atomically precise nanoclusters (NCs) have recently emerged as ideal building blocks for constructing self-assembled multifunctional superstructures. The existing structures are based on various non-covalent interactions of the ligands on the NC surface, resulting in inter-NC interactions. Despite recent demonstrations on light-induced reversible self-assembly, long-range reversible self-assembly based on dynamic covalent chemistry on the NC surface has yet to be investigated. Here, it is shown that Au₂₅ NCs containing thiolated umbelliferone (7-hydroxycoumarin) ligands allow [2+2] photocycloaddition reaction-induced self-assembly into colloidal-level toroids. The toroids upon further irradiation undergo inter-toroidal reaction resulting in macroscopic supertoroidal honey-comb frameworks. Systematic investigation using electron microscopy, atomic force microscopy (AFM), and electron tomography (ET) suggest that the NCs initially form spherical aggregates. The spherical structures further undergo fusion resulting in toroid formation. Finally, the toroids fuse into macroscopic honeycomb frameworks. As a proof-of-concept, a cross-photocycloaddition reaction between coumarin-tethered NCs and an anticancer drug (5-fluorouracil) is demonstrated as a model photo-controlled drug release system. The model system allows systematic loading and unloading of the drug during the assembly and disassembly under two different wavelengths. The results suggest that the dynamic covalent chemistry on the NC surface offers a facile route for hierarchical multifunctional frameworks and photocontrolled drug release.

Density functional theory computation of the intermolecular interactions of Al2@C24 and Al2@Mg12O12 semiconducting quantum dots conjugated with the glycine tripeptide

The nature of intermolecular forces within semiconductor quantum dot systems can determine various physicochemical properties, as well as their functions, in nanomedical applications. The purpose of this study has been to investigate the nature of the intermolecular forces operating between Al2@C24 and Al2@Mg12O12 semiconducting quantum dots and the glycine tripeptide (GlyGlyGly), and also consider whether permanent electric dipole-dipole interactions play a significant role vis-à-vis these molecular systems. The energy computations, including the Keesom and the total electronic interactions and the energy decomposition, together with the quantum topology analyses were performed. Our results demonstrate that no significant correlation is found between the magnitude and orientation of the electrical dipole moments, and the interaction energy of the Al2@C24 and Al2@Mg12O12 with GlyGlyGly tripeptide. The Pearson correlation coefficient test revealed a very weak correlation between the quantum and the Keesom interaction energies. Apart from the quantum topology analyses, the energy decomposition consideration confirmed that the dominant share of the interaction energies was associated with the electrostatic interactions, yet both the steric and the quantum effects also made appreciable contributions. We conclude that, beside the electrical dipole-dipole interactions, other prominent intermolecular forces, such as the polarization attraction, the hydrogen bond, and the van der Waals interactions can also influence the interaction energy of the system. The findings of this study can be utilized in several areas in the field of nanobiomedicine, including the rational design of cell-penetrating and intracellular drug delivery systems using semiconducting quantum dots functionalized with a peptide.
