Abstract
Shrimp aquaculture has rapidly developed into a significant industry worldwide, providing not only financial gain and high-quality food but also tens of thousands of trained and competent workers. Frequent diseases are now regarded as a significant risk factor for shrimp aquaculture, as they have the potential to significantly reduce shrimp production and result in economic losses. Over the years various traditional methods including the use of antibiotics have been followed to control diseases yet unsuccessful. Probiotic is considered potential supplements for shrimps during farming, they may also act beneficially as disease control and increased production. Probiotics are described as a live microbial supplement that benefits the host by modifying the microbial population associated with the host and its ambient. The present state of research about probiotics demonstrates notable impacts on the immune defences of the host's gastrointestinal system, which play a crucial role in safeguarding against diseases and managing inflammation inside the digestive tract. In the past ten years, many studies on probiotics have been published. However, there is a lack of information about the processes by which probiotics exert their effects in aquaculture systems, with only limited elucidations being offered. This study explores the variety of procedures behind the positive effects of probiotics in shrimp culture. These mechanisms include the augmentation of the immune system, control of growth, antagonistic action against pathogens, competitive exclusion, and modification of the gut microbiota. Mechanisms involved in the probiotic mode of action are mostly interlinked. This provides a greater understanding of the importance of probiotics in shrimp culture as an environmentally friendly practice.

Abstract
White Spot syndrome virus (WSSV) causes rapid shrimp mortality and production loss worldwide. This study demonstrates potential use of Lactobacillus johnsonii KD1 as an anti-WSSV agent for post larva shrimp cultivation and explores some potential mechanisms behind the anti-WSSV properties. Treatment of Penaeus vannamei shrimps with L. johnsonii KD1 prior to oral challenge with WSSV-infected tissues showed a significantly reduced mortality. In addition, WSSV copy numbers were not detected and shrimp immune genes were upregulated. Genomic analysis of L. johnsonii KD1 based on Illumina and Nanopore platforms revealed a 1.87 Mb chromosome and one 15.4 Kb plasmid. Only one antimicrobial resistance gene (ermB) in the chromosome was identified. Phylogenetic analysis comparing L. johnsonii KD1 to other L. johnsonii isolates revealed that L. johnsonii KD1 is closely related to L. johnsonii GHZ10a isolated from wild pigs. Interestingly, L. johnsonii KD1 contains isolate-specific genes such as genes involved in a type I restriction-modification system and CAZymes belonging to the GT8 family. Furthermore, genes coding for probiotic survival and potential antimicrobial/anti-viral metabolites such as a homolog of the bacteriocin helveticin-J were found. Protein-protein docking modelling suggests the helveticin-J homolog may be able to block VP28-PmRab7 interactions and interrupt WSSV infection.

Abstract
The use of probiotics in aquaculture is widely recognized as an ecological and cost-effective approach to raising healthy, pathogen-tolerant aquatic animals, including fish and shrimp. In particular for shrimp, probiotics are viewed as a promising countermeasure to the recent severe damage to the shrimp industry by bacterial and viral pathogens. Purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) are Gram-negative, non-pathogenic bacteria with wide application potential in agriculture, wastewater treatment, and bioenergy/biomaterials production. In aquaculture, lactic bacteria and Bacillus are the major probiotic bacteria used, but PNSB, like Rhodopseudomonas and Rhodobacter, are also used. In this review, we summarize the previous work on the use of PNSB in aquaculture, overview the previous studies on the stimulation of innate immunity of shrimp by various probiotic microorganisms, and also share our results in the probiotic performance of Rhodovulum sulfidophilum KKMI01, a marine PNSB, which showed a superior effect in promotion of growth and stimulation of immunity in shrimp at a quite low concentration of 1 × 103 cfu (colony forming unit)/ml in rearing water.

Abstract
The growth performance, immunological status, and intestinal microbiology of white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, were evaluated after dietary administration of the commercial probiotic SYNSEA. Shrimp were fed a control diet (without probiotic supplement) and two levels of SYNSEA probiotic, a low concentration of SYNSEA (LSL) containing 105 CFU (g diet)-1Bacillus subtilis and 105 CFU (g diet)-1 lactic acid bacteria (LAB), and a high concentration of SYNSEA (LSH) containing 106 CFU (g diet)-1B. subtilis and 106 CFU (g diet)-1 LAB, for 12 weeks. Shrimp fed with the LSL diet significantly increased growth performance as well as final weight and feed efficiency compared to the control, but not the LSH diet. After being orally challenged with Vibrio parahaemolyticus, shrimp fed with LSL diet prior to the challenge or fed with LSL and pathogen simultaneously showed significantly lower mortality compared to the control. SYNSEA probiotic significantly improved shrimp immune response, including lysozyme activity in LSL and LSH groups, and phagocytic activity in the LSL group in comparison to the control. In addition, the gene expressions of anti-lipopolysaccharide factor 2 in LSL and LSH groups, and penaeidin 4 in LSL were also up-regulated. Although there was no significant difference among groups for hepatopancreas and intestinal morphology, the muscular layer thickness and villi height were slightly improved in the intestines of shrimp fed SYNSEA. The 16S rDNA gene amplicon sequence analysis using next-generation sequencing revealed a significant decrease in α-diversity (Margalef's species richness) after oral administration of SYNSEA due to an increase in the relative abundance of beneficial bacteria in the gut flora of shrimp, such as Lactobacillus, Shewanella, and Bradymonadales and a decrease in harmful bacteria, such as Vibrio, Candidatus_Berkiella, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Together the data suggest that the provision of SYNSEA probiotic at 105 CFU (g diet)-1B. subtilis and 105 CFU (g diet)-1 LAB can improve shrimp growth, enhance immunity, and disease resistance status of the host. In addition, these findings conclude that SYNSEA probiotic has great preventive and therapeutic potential for Vibrio infection in shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
Bacterial and viral diseases in aquaculture result in severe production and economic losses. Among pathogenic bacteria, species belonging to the Vibrio genus are one of the most common and widespread disease-causing agents. Vibrio infections play a leading role in constraining the sustainable growth of the aquaculture sector worldwide and, consequently, are the target of manifold disease prevention strategies. During the early, larval stages of development, Vibrio species are a common cause of high mortality rates in reared fish and shellfish, circumstances under which the host organisms might be highly susceptible to disease preventive or treatment strategies such as vaccines and antibiotics use, respectively. Regardless of host developmental stage, Vibrio infections may occur suddenly and can lead to the loss of the entire population reared in a given aquaculture system. Furthermore, the frequency of Vibrio-associated diseases in humans is increasing globally and has been linked to anthropic activities, in particular human-driven climate change and intensive livestock production. In this context, here we cover the current knowledge of Vibrio infections in fish aquaculture, with a focus on the model species gilthead seabream (Sparus aurata), a highly valuable reared fish in the Mediterranean climatic zone. Molecular methods currently used for fast detection and identification of Vibrio pathogens and their antibiotic resistance profiles are addressed. Targeted therapeutic approaches are critically examined. They include vaccination, phage therapy and probiotics supplementation, which bear promise in supressing vibriosis in land-based fish rearing and in mitigating possible threats to human health and the environment. This literature review suggests that antibiotic resistance is increasing among Vibrio species, with the use of probiotics constituting a promising, sustainable approach to prevent Vibrio infections in aquaculture.

Abstract
Purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) reportedly have probiotic effects in fish, but whether they are indigenous in the digestive tract of fish is a question that requires answering. We attempted to isolate PNSB from the digestive tract of ayu (Plecoglossus altivelis) from the Kuma River (Kumamoto, Japan) and successfully isolated 12 PNSB strains. All the isolated PNSB belonged to the genus Rhodopseudomonas. Five Rhodopseudomonas strains were also isolated from the soil samples collected along the Kuma River. The phylogenetic tree based on the partial sequence of pufLM gene indicated that the PNSB from ayu and soil were similar. The effects of NaCl concentration in growth medium on growth were also compared between the PNSB from ayu and soil. The PNSB from ayu showed a better growth performance at a higher NaCl concentration, suggesting that the intestinal tract of ayu, a euryhaline fish, might provide suitable environment for halophilic microorganisms.

Abstract
Purple non-sulfur bacteria (PNSB) are used as probiotics in shrimp aquaculture; however, no studies have examined the probiotic effects of PNSB in shrimp at the gene expression level. In this study, we examined the effects of a marine PNSB, Rhodovulum sulfidophilum KKMI01, on the gene expression of kuruma shrimp (Marsupenaeus japonicus). Short-term (3 days) effects of R. sulfidophilum KKMI01 on the gene expression in shrimp were examined using small-scale laboratory aquaria experiments, while long-term (145 days) effects of R. sulfidophilum KKMI01 on the growth performance and gene expression were examined using 200-ton outdoor aquaria experiments. Gene expression levels were examined using qRT-PCR. Results of the short-term experiments showed the upregulation of several molting-related genes, including cuticle proteins, calcification proteins, and cuticle pigment protein, suggesting that PNSB stimulated the growth of shrimp. The upregulation of several immune genes, such as prophenoloxidase, antimicrobial peptides, and superoxide dismutase, was also observed. In the 145-day outdoor experiments, the average body weight at harvest time, survival rate, and feed conversion ratio were significantly improved in PNSB-treated shrimp, and upregulation of molting and immune-related genes were also observed. When PNSB cells were added to the rearing water, the effective dosage of PNSB was as low as 103 cfu/mL, which was more than a million times dilution of the original PNSB culture (2–3 × 109 cfu/mL), indicating that R. sulfidophilum KKMI01 provides a feasible and cost-effective application as a probiotic candidate in shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Probiotics are widely used to promote host health. Compared to mammals and terrestrial invertebrates, little is known the role of probiotics in aquatic invertebrates. In this study, eighteen tanks with eight hundred of shrimp post-larvae individuals each were randomly grouped into three groups, one is shrimps administered with E. faecium as probiotic (Tre) and others are shrimps without probiotic-treatment (CK1: blank control, CK2: medium control). We investigated the correlations between a kind of commercial Enterococcus faecium (E. faecium) powder and microbiota composition with function potentials in shrimp post-larvae gut. RESULTS We sequenced the 16S rRNA gene (V4) of gut samples to assess diversity and composition of the shrimp gut microbiome and used differential abundance and Tax4Fun2 analyses to identify the differences of taxonomy and predicted function between different treatment groups. The ingested probiotic bacteria (E. faecium) were tracked in gut microbiota of Tre and the shrimps here showed the best growth performance especially in survival ratio (SR). The distribution of SR across samples was similar to that in PCoA plot based on Bray-Curits and two subgroups generated (SL: SR < 70%, SH: SR ≥ 70%). The gut microbiota structure and predicted function were correlated with both treatment and SR, and SR was a far more important factor driving taxonomic and functional differences than treatment. Both Tre and SH showed a low and uneven community species and shorted phylogenetic distance. We detected a shift in composition profile at phylum and genus level and further identified ten OTUs as relevant taxa that both closely associated with treatment and SR. The partial least squares path model further supported the important role of relevant taxa related to shrimp survival ratio. CONCLUSIONS Overall, we found gut microbiota correlated to both shrimp survival and ingested probiotic bacteria (E. faecium). These correlations should not be dismissed without merit and will uncover a promising strategy for developing novel probiotics through certain consortium of gut microbiota.

Production of a Class IIb Bacteriocin with Broad-spectrum Antimicrobial Activity in Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RUB1. Probiotics Antimicrob Proteins 2021; 13:1820-1832. Abstract
Bacteriocins produced by lactic acid bacteria have potential use as natural food preservatives, which may alleviate current problems associated with the overuse of antibiotics and emerging multi-drug-resistant microbes. In this work, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum RUB1 was found to produce a class IIb bacteriocin with strong antibacterial activity. Except for plnXY encoding putative proteins, L. plantarum RUB1 contains most genes in five operons (plnABCD, plnGHSTUVW, plnMNOP, plnIEF, and plnRLJK) related to bacteriocin synthesis. Adding low (100 and 500 ng/mL) and medium (1 μg/mL) concentrations of PlnA to broth promoted bacteriocin production and upregulated bacteriocin gene plnA, while high concentrations (50 and 200 μg/mL) inhibited expression of these genes. Co-culturing L. plantarum RUB1 with Enterococcus hirae 1003, Enterococcus hirae LWS, Limosilactobacillus fermentum RC4, L. plantarum B6, and even Listeria monocytogenes ATCC 19111 and Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 6538 enhanced bacteriocin activity and expression of bacteriocin-related genes. This study verifies that PlnA can indeed upregulate the expression of bacteriocin genes, and also bacteriocin production can be induced by co-culture with some specific bacteria or their cell-free supernatants. Bacteriocin production by L. plantarum RUB1 is mediated by a quorum sensing mechanism, directly influenced by autoinducing peptide or specific strains. The findings provide new methods and insight into bacteriocin production mechanisms.

Abstract
Diseases are natural components of the environment, and many have economic implications for aquaculture and fisheries. Aquaculture is a fast-growing industry with the aim to meet the high protein demand of the ever-increasing global population; however, the emergence of diseases is a major setback to the industry. Probiotics emerged as a better solution to curb the disease problem in aquaculture among many alternatives. Probiotic Bacillus has been proven to better combat a wide range of fish pathogens relative to other probiotics in aquaculture; therefore, understanding the various mechanisms used by Bacillus in combating diseases will help improve their mode of action hence yielding better results in their combat against pathogens in the aquaculture industry. Thus, an overview of the mechanisms (production of bacteriocins, suppression of virulence gene expression, competition for adhesion sites, production of lytic enzymes, production of antibiotics, immunostimulation, competition for nutrients and energy, and production of organic acids) used by Bacillus probiotics in mitigating fish pathogens ranging from Aeromonas, Vibrio, Streptococcus, Yersinia, Pseudomonas, Clostridium, Acinetobacter, Edwardsiella, Flavobacterium, white spot syndrome virus, and infectious hypodermal and hematopoietic necrosis virus proven to be mitigated by Bacillus have been provided.

Abstract
AIM The objective of this study was to evaluate the probiotic potential of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) isolated from the intestinal ecosystem of rainbow trout. METHODS AND RESULTS Among LAB isolates, 10 of them were selected and screened for resistance to acid and bile salts, pancreatin, sodium chloride and temperature, hydrophobicity, growth profile and antimicrobial activity against fish pathogens. Then, biosafety assessments were investigated. Selected LAB tolerated to gastrointestinal physiological conditions, pancreatin and a range of sodium chloride and temperature. They also exhibited hydrophobicity and showed antagonistic activity against Streptococcus iniae and Yersinia ruckeri. Results of 16S rRNA gene sequencing showed that selected LAB belonged to the Lactococcus lactis (n = 5) and Weissella oryzae (n = 5) species. They exhibited no β-haemolytic activity, while six selected LAB were resistant to some antibiotics. None of them harboured virulence factors. CONCLUSIONS This study revealed probiotic characteristics of indigenous LAB isolated from the intestinal ecosystem of rainbow trout. However, further studies are required to confirm the effectiveness of these isolates as probiotics in aquaculture. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY To the best of our knowledge, for the first time, the presence of probiotic candidates belonging to W. Oryzae was confirmed in fish intestinal microbiota.

Abstract
An eight-week feeding trial was conducted to evaluate the effects of different dietary probiotic supplements in juvenile whiteleg shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei. A basal control diet without probiotics (CON), and five other diets by supplementing Bacillus subtilis at 107 CFU/g diet (BS7), B. subtilis (BS8), Pediococcus pentosaceus (PP8), and Lactococcus lactis (LL8) at 108 CFU/g diet, and oxytetracycline (OTC) at 4 g/kg diet were used. Whiteleg shrimp with initial body weights of 1.41 ± 0.05 g (mean ± SD) were fed with these diets. Growth of shrimp fed BS8 and LL8 diets was significantly higher than those of shrimp fed the CON diet (p < 0.05). Superoxide dismutase activity in shrimp fed PP8 and LL8 diets was significantly higher than that of shrimp fed the CON diet (p < 0.05). Lysozyme activity of shrimp fed probiotics and OTC diets significantly improved compared to those on the CON diet (p < 0.05). The intestinal histology showed healthier guts for shrimp fed the probiotic diets (p < 0.05). Immune-related gene expression in shrimp fed BS8, PP8 and LL8 diets was recorded as significantly higher than that of shrimp fed CON and OTC diets (p < 0.05). Also, results of the challenge test for 7 days and the digestive enzyme activity of shrimp fed BS8, PP8, and LL8 were significantly improved compared to those on the CON diet (p < 0.05). Therefore, these results indicated that L. lactis at 108 CFU/g could be an ideal probiotic for whiteleg shrimp, and also B. subtilis WB60 and P. pentosaceus at 108 CFU/g could improve the growth, immunity, histology, gene expression, digestive enzyme activity, and disease resistance, while replacing antibiotics.

Abstract
To study the effects of Bacillus lincheniformis feeding frequency on the survival and growth of Haliotis discus hannai abalone, we measured the expression levels of nonspecific immune genes and monitored the anti-Vibrio parahaemolyticus immune reaction. H. discus hannai (shell length: 32.75 ± 2.63 mm, body weight: 4.91 ± 0.34 g) was selected to perform a 70 d laboratory culture experiment including a 14 d V. parahaemolyticus artificial infection experiment. The control group (C) was fed normal commercial feed every day. The M1 experimental group was given experimental feed and basal feed on alternating days until the end of the experiment. The M2 experimental group was given experimental feed for 4 d and basal feed for 3 d, and this cycle was repeated every 7 d until the end of the experiment. The M3 experimental group was given experimental feed for 2 d and basal feed for 5 d, and this cycle was repeated every 7 d until the end of the experiment. The M4 group was continuously given experimental feed for the duration of the experiment. The concentration of added B. lincheniformis in each experimental group was 105 cfu/g (according to the quantity of viable bacteria). The specific growth rate (as measured by body weight) and the feed conversion efficiency of the abalone in M1 and M2 were significantly higher than those in M4 and C (P < 0.05). The cellulose and lipase activities of abalone in M1, M2 or M4 were significantly higher than those in M3 or C (P < 0.05). The acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, total haemocyte counts, O2- levels generated by respiratory bursts, and the expression levels of Mn-SOD, TPx, GSTs and GSTm in abalone in the M2 group were significantly higher than those in any other feeding frequency group (P < 0.05). At the end of the V. parahaemolyticus infection, the cumulative mortality of the abalone in M2 was significantly lower than that in any other group (P < 0.05). Consequently, given the growth advantages and the enhancement of immune function, the feeding plan in which B. lincheniformis was applied for 4 d per week, and basal feed was then applied for 3 d, did not lead to a high level of immune reaction, immune fatigue or waste of resources, but increased the growth rate of individuals and their resistance to V. parahaemolyticus infection.

Abstract
Microbial fermentation is an efficient, economical and eco-friendly approach to overcome the limitations in soybean meal replacement of fish meal in aquaculture. However, little research focused on the development of shrimp-derived strains for fermentation of SBM. In this study, Bacillus sanfensis (SQVG18) and Bacillus stratosphericus (SQVG22) were screened from shrimp intestine for fermentation according to the activities of protease, cellulase and phytase. The optimized fermentation conditions of SQVG18 and SQVG22 were as follow: fermentation temperature (40°C vs 35°C), fermentation time (48h both), inoculation amount [4% both (v/m)], solid-liquid ratio [1:1.2 vs 1:1 (g/ml)]. After 48 h fermentation, SQVG18 and SQVG22 increased crude protein content by 6.93% and 5.95%, respectively; degraded most of macromolecular proteins to micromolecular proteins (< 20 kDa); improved amino acids profiles, like lysine and methionine in particular; significantly decreased the anti-nutritional factors such as trypsin inhibitor, glycinin and β-conglycinin (P < 0.05). In addition, both strains were observed no hemolytic activity, less antibiotic resistance genes and definite inhibition to common shrimp pathogens of Vibrio alginolyticus sp. and Vibrio parahaemolyticus sp. These results indicated that both strains could improve nutrition values of soybean meal effectively and have potential applications in shrimp culture.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to obtain an autochthonous probiotic candidate strain from the silver catfish (Rhamdia quelen) intestinal tract, comparing its in vivo performance with an allochthonous probiotic isolated from another fish, Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), in a growth performance assay. The study was divided in two parts: in vitro and in vivo assay followed by challenge with A. hydrophila. In the in vitro assay, the species-specific isolated strain Lactococcus lactis presented characteristics such as: absence of hemolysis, antagonism to bacterial pathogens isolated from freshwater fish, and considerable speed of duplication. In the in vivo trial, both fish supplemented with autochthonous or allochthonous strains presented an increase the final concentration of lactic acid bacteria in the intestinal tract of the fish after 60 days of dietary supplementation reaching concentrations of 1 × 107 CFU g-1 and 4 × 107 UFC.g-1, respectively. In addition, the autochthonous strain increased the mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) of the treated animals, but no significant differences were observed in the other hemato-immunological and zootechnical parameters between treatments. After challenge with Aeromonas hydrophila, only animals that received autochthonous probiotic supplementation showed an increase in the serum total immunoglobulin concentration, but not enough to observe a significant difference in the survival rate between the treatments. Dietary supplementation of the probiotic allochthonous strain did not demonstrate any effects superior to those of the isolated autochthonous strain. Although the autochthonous strain did not present significant improvements in the other parameters evaluated in this study, it was able to inhibit bacterial pathogens in vitro, to increase the final concentration of LAB's and the amount of immunoglobulin after experimental challenge, demonstrating probiotic potential. This study demonstrated for the first time the isolation and in vivo use of an autochthonous probiotic strain isolated from silver catfish, as well as its comparative evaluation with the performance of allochthonous probiotic.

Abstract
Our previous work showed that using Lactobacillus pentosus HC-2 as a probiotic could improve the growth performance, immune response, gut bacterial diversity and disease resistance of Litopenaeus vannamei. However, the probiotic mechanism had not been fully characterized. In the present study, histology and proteomic analysis were performed to explore the influence of HC-2 surface protein on its probiotic effects on L. vannamei after feeding either the intact surface proteins, the probiotic treated with lithium chloride (LiCl) to remove noncovalently bound surface proteins or no probiotic for four weeks. Histological observation found that feeding with normal HC-2 obviously improved the intestinal histology and enhanced the protective effect against pathogen damage, but feeding with LiCl-treated HC-2 did not improve the intestinal environment. A total of over 2764 peptides and 1118 uniproteins were identified from the L. vannamei midgut; 211 proteins were significantly differentially expressed in the normal HC-2 group compared with the control group; 510 proteins were significantly differentially expressed in the LiCl-treated HC-2 group compared with the control group, and 458 proteins were significantly differentially expressed in the LiCl-treated HC-2 group compared with the normal HC-2 group. GO/KEGG enrichment analysis of the significantly different proteins demonstrated that feeding normal HC-2 mainly induced immune response, metabolic, cell adhesion and cell-cell signaling-related protein upregulation, which contributed to bacterial adhesion and colonization in the midgut to improve the shrimp immune system and growth, but these proteins were suppressed after the shrimp were fed bacteria deprived of surface proteins. Taken together, these results indicate that the surface proteins were indispensable for HC-2 to execute probiotic effects in the shrimp midgut.

Abstract
The effects of a diet containing the probiotic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on the survival and growth of Haliotis discus hannai were evaluated by measuring growth and hematological parameters and the expression levels of nonspecific immune genes. In addition, the abalone's response to Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection was assessed. H. discus hannai (shell length: 29.35 ± 1.81 mm, body weight: 4.28 ± 0.23 g) were exposed to an 8-week culture experiment in indoor aquariums and a 2-week V. parahaemolyticus artificial infection experiment. In each experiment, the control group (C) was fed daily with the basal feed; the experimental groups were fed daily with the experimental feed, prepared by spraying B. amyloliquefaciens onto the basal feed at final concentrations of 103 (group A1), 105 (A2), and 107 (A3) cfu/g. The survival rate, body weight specific growth rate, and food conversion efficiency in A2 and A3 were significantly higher than those in A1 and C (P < 0.05). The total number of blood lymphocytes, the O2- and NO levels produced from respiratory burst, the activities of acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, and the expression levels of catalase and thiol peroxidase in A2 were not significantly different from those in A3, but these factors were significantly higher in A2 compared to A1 and C (P < 0.05). The total antioxidant capacity and expression levels of glutathione S-transferase in A1, A2 and A3 were significantly higher than those in C (P < 0.05). At day 9 after infection with V. parahaemolyticus, all abalone in C were dead; at the end of the experiment, the cumulative mortality of abalone in A2 was significantly lower than that in any other group (P < 0.05). Thus, the experimental feed containing 105 cfu/g B. amyloliquefaciens not only facilitated the food intake and growth of abalone, but also effectively enhanced their non-specific immunity and resistance to V. parahaemolyticus infection. In this regard, B. amyloliquefaciens may be a useful probiotic strain for abalone aquaculture.

Abstract
Over the last few years, marine environment was found to be a source of surplus
natural products and microorganisms with new bioactive secondary metabolites of
interest which can divulge nutritional and biological impact on the host. This
study aims to assess the possible, inherent and functional probiotic properties
of a novel probiotic strain Enterococcus durans F3 (E.
durans F3) isolated from the gut of fresh water fish Catla
catla. Parameters for evaluating and describing the probiotics
described in FAD/WHO guidelines were followed. E. durans F3
demonstrated affirmative results including simulated bile, acid and gastric
juice tolerance with exhibited significant bactericidal effect against pathogens
Staphylococcus aureus, Salmonella Typhi,
Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas
aeruginosa. This can be due to the enterocin produced by E.
durans F3 strain, which was resolute by sodium dodecyl sulphate
polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis (SDS-PAGE) gel with amplification of the
anticipated fragment of a structural gene; enterocin A, followed by antibiotic
susceptibility assessment. Effective antioxidant potentiality against
α-diphenyl-α-picrylhydrazyl free radicals including lipase, bile
salt hydrolase activity with auto-aggregation and cell surface hydrophobicity
was similarly observed. Results are proving the potentiality of E.
durans F3, which can also be used as probiotic starter culture in
dairy industries for manufacturing new products that imparts health benefits to
the host. Finding the potent and novel probiotic strains will also satisfy the
current developing market demand for probiotics.

Abstract
Our previous work showed that Lactobacillus pentosus HC-2 has high antibacterial and adhesion activity, and as a probiotic could improve the nutrients and immunomodulatory effects in the Litopenaeus vannamei farming. In order to further investigate the influence of HC-2 surface protein on its probiotic effects, the immune and digestion related genes expression and enzymes activities, the colonization numbers of HC-2, and the histologic characteristics were analysis in shrimp hepatopancreas after feeding either the intact surface proteins, the probiotic treated with lithium chloride (LiCl) to remove noncovalently bound surface proteins or no probiotic for four weeks. The results showed that the immune genes expression of lysozyme, proPO, LGBP, Penaeidins-3α, crustin and C-type lectin, the immune enzymes activities of superoxide dismutase, catalase and Alkaline phosphatase, and the digestion enzymes of Trypsin, Lipase and α-Amylase were significantly higher in hepatopancreas of shrimp fed with intact HC-2 than that in shrimp fed with base diet or striped surface proteins HC-2 post feeding and challenge. In addition, the shrimp fed with intact HC-2 leads to the bacteria cells adhesion to hepatopancreas was significantly higher than that in shrimp fed with no surface proteins HC-2. Furthermore, the tissue damages of hepatopancreas caused by pathogenic vibrio were obviously observed in shrimp fed with base diet or no surface proteins HC-2, but no signs of damages were found in shrimp fed with intact HC-2. These results demonstrate that surface proteins are important components for HC-2 to execute probiotic effect that improve hepatopancreas immune response and nutrition digestion to protect shrimp against pathogen damage.

Abstract
Probiotic is well known because of its health benefit on the host, including improve growth, treat disease, and enhance immunity. Currently, probiotic has been widely used in aquaculture. However, there is little information about the effect of probiotic on turbot. Therefore, an effort was made to explore the effect of a multi-strain probiotic on growth performance, non-specific immune response, and intestinal health of juvenile turbot, Scophthalmus maximus L. One hundred eighty juvenile turbot (20.04 ± 0.23 g) were randomly divided into three groups (T0, T1, T2), and fed diet were formulated to contain 0%, 1%, and 5% multi-strain probiotic, respectively. Sixty days after the feeding experiment, the growth performance, body composition, enzyme activities, and intestinal microorganism of turbot were analyzed. T2 and T1 showed better growth performance and significant higher (P < 0.05) enzyme activities than T0 (except lysozyme). Moreover, the IV (intestinal villus), IW (intestinal wall), and GC (goblet cell) were well modulated in probiotic treatments. Furthermore, Lactobacillus was found colonized in the intestine of the group fed with 5% multi-strain probiotic. These results suggested adding dietary multi-strain probiotic could positively affect for turbot aquaculture.

Abstract
Intestinal bacteria play an important role in the health and provide a variety of beneficial effects to host. Immunosuppressant can reduce the immunity of host and increase the susceptibility to pathogens. But it is not clear whether the increased susceptibility caused by immunosuppressant is related to changes of gut microbiota. In this study, we used crucian carp administrated with dexamethasone to explore the effects of immunosuppressants on gut microbial communities and further evaluate the potential association between changes in gut microbiota and susceptibility to pathogens. The results of MANOVA based on the top 10 PCoA axis scores from unweighed/weighted UniFrac distances showed that administration of dexamethasone (P = 0.021) and the administration time (P = 0.027) had a significant impact on the gut microbial composition, regardless of pathogens infection status (P = 0.35). After administration with dexamethasone, the fish had higher abundance of Cetobacterium and lower abundance of Bacillus and Lactococcus, and the abundance of genus Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Lactococcus decreased along with prolong administration time of dexamethasone. The results may help us understand the correlation between the host susceptibility to pathogenic bacteria and gut microbial community shift, and extend our knowledge regarding the role of gut microbiota in keeping the balance between pathogenic and symbiotic bacteria.

The interactions of microbiota in the intestines play an important role in promoting or maintaining the health of hosts. The present study aim to investigate the effects of the surface proteins of Lactobacillus pentosus HC-2 on the immune response and the bacterial composition of Litopenaeus vannamei, thus, the immune-related genes, surface condition, HC-2 numbers and the bacteria diversity in midgut were explored after shrimp feeding the normal HC-2 and 5 M - lithium chloride (LiCl) treated HC-2 for four weeks. Obvious improvements in the intestinal surface were observed in R group than the control group and L group. qPCR analysis demonstrated that the selected immune-related genes of lysozyme, proPO, LGBP, PEN-3α, crustin, and lvLec were significantly up-regulated in group R than in group L. Meanwhile, in the challenge test, shrimp in R group received 72% relative percent survival, which was significantly higher than the L group (RPS = 9%). The bacteria composition analysis showed that the abundance of Proteobacteria were significantly higher in group R and L than in group C, and the Bacteroidetes were significantly higher in group C than in group R and L, whereas the numbers of Chloroflexi were significantly higher in group R than in group C and L. The bacterial community difference analysis revealed that the harmful bacteria such as genus of Vibrio, Tenacibaculu and Thalassobius were decreased and the beneficial bacterium as Ruegeria and Lactobacillus were increased in R group, whereas this phenomenon were not found in L group. Taken together, above results indicating that the surface proteins were indispensable for L. pentosus HC-2 adhesion and colonization in shrimp intestines to improve intestine condition, enhance immune response, competitively exclude the pathogens, and promote the beneficial bacteria growth to protect the shrimp from pathogens infection. The findings in this work will help to promote the understanding of the roles of probiotics in shrimp intestines displaying probiotic-function by regulating the intestinal bacteria.

Abstract
A 15-day feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effect of dietary Lactobacillus plantarum on growth performance, digestive enzyme activities and gut morphology of juvenile Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei (initial body weight = 7.96 ± 0.59 g). Four microbound diets were formulated to contain fermentation supernatant (FS), live bacteria (LB), dead bacteria (DB), and cell-free extract (CE) of L. plantarum. Results indicated that final weight was significantly higher in FS, DB, and CE group in comparison to the control group (P < 0.05). The maximum weight gain rate (WGR) and specific growth rate (SGR) of the CE diet group were significantly higher than that of other groups (P < 0.05). The FCR of CE diet group was lower than that of the control, LB, DB, and FS diets groups (P < 0.05). The highest digestive enzyme activities (amylase, lipase, and pepsin activity) in the hepatopancreas and gut of shrimp were observed in the CE diet group. Histological study revealed that dietary CE diet could significantly increase the enterocytes height of shrimp. The administration of cell-free extract of L. plantarum could effectively improve the growth performance of L. vannamei via the improvement of digestive enzyme activities and the enterocytes height of shrimp. The results of this study will be essential to promote application of probiotics in shrimp aquaculture.

Abstract
Probiotic strains play an increasing role in the production of healthy animals used as a food source. Elucidating the mechanisms of action that allow probiotic-driven immunomodulation may facilitate different applications such as the prevention of infectious diseases in food organisms. This study elucidates the probiotic effects of Exiguobacterium acetylicum S01 on the growth, haematological profile, innate immune capacity, expression of cytokine genes, and resistance to diseases of Carassius auratus caused by Aeromonas hydrophila infection. Three fish groups were fed with the following diets containing different doses of E. acetylicum S01 (CFU g-1): basal diet 0 (BD, without probiotic), 2.5 × 107 (DI) and 2.7 × 109 (DII)-CFU g-1 for 4 weeks. After 4 weeks, the fish were injected intraperitoneally with A. hydrophila and the percentage of survival was recorded over 21 days of post-challenge. Results revealed that dietary supplementation of E. acetylicum S01 significantly (P < 0.05) enhanced the growth, haematological profile and cellular immune responses including respiratory burst, phagocytic activities and antimicrobial enzymes (myeloperoxidase and lysozyme) and total immunoglobulin levels were improved by probiotic feeding at both occasions. Comparatively, expression of c- and g-type lysozyme followed by pro- and anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1β, IL-10 and TGFβ) was up-regulated in kidney, head-kidney and spleen. Moreover, fish fed with diet DII had a significantly higher (P < 0.05) survival rate (73.2%) after challenging. The survival rate was only 33.2% of the BD group against A. hydrophila infection. Our results revealed that E. acetylicum S01 delivered probiotic in feed exerts its influence on growth performance and provides disease resistance by stimulating the immune system at the cellular and molecular levels in C. auratus.

Abstract
With the emergence of several infectious diseases in shrimp aquaculture, there is a growing interest in the use of feed additives to enhance shrimp immunity. Recently, the use of 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), a non-protein amino acid that plays a rate-limiting role in heme biosynthesis, has received attention for its positive effect on immunity in livestock animals. To evaluate the effect of 5-ALA in the Pacific white shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, we conducted microarray analysis, a Vibrio parahaemolyticus immersion challenge test, an ATP level assay, and gene expression analysis of some hemoproteins and genes associated with heme synthesis and degradation. Out of 15,745 L. vannamei putative genes on the microarray, 101 genes were differentially expressed by more than fourfold (p < 0.05) between 5-ALA-supplemented and control shrimp hepatopancreas. 5-ALA upregulated 99 of the 101 genes, 41 of which were immune- and defense-related genes based on sequence homology. Compared to the control, the 5-ALA-supplemented group had a higher survival rate in the challenge test, higher transcript levels of porphobilinogen synthase, ferrochelatase, catalase, nuclear receptor E75, and heme oxygenase-1 and higher levels of ATP. These findings suggest that dietary 5-ALA enhanced the immune response of L. vannamei to V. parahaemolyticus, upregulated immune- and defense-related genes, and enhanced aerobic energy metabolism, respectively. Further studies are needed to elucidate the extent of 5-ALA use in shrimp culture.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria (LAB) are group of beneficial bacteria that have been proposed as relevant probiotics with immunomodulatory functions. In this study, we initially isolated and identified host-derived LAB from the gut of the Pacific white shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei. Analysis of the bacterial 16S rRNA gene sequence revealed two candidate LAB, the Lactobacillus plantarum strain SGLAB01 and the Lactococcus lactis strain SGLAB02, which exhibited 99% identity to the L. plantarum strain LB1-2 and the L. lactis strain R-53658, which were isolated from bee gut, respectively. The two LAB displayed antimicrobial activities against gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria, including the virulent acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND)-causing strain of Vibrio parahaemolyticus (VPAHPND). Viable colony count and SEM analysis showed that the two candidate LAB, administered via oral route as feed supplement, could reside and adhere in the shrimp gut. Double-stranded RNA-mediated gene silencing of LvproPO1 and LvproPO2 revealed a significant role of two LvproPOs in the proPO system as well as in the immune response against VPAHPND infection in L. vannamei shrimp. The effect of LAB supplementation on modulation of the shrimp proPO system was investigated in vivo, and the results showed that administration of the two candidate LAB significantly increased hemolymph PO activity, the relative mRNA expression of LvproPO1 and LvproPO2, and resistance to VPAHPND infection. These findings suggest that administration of L. plantarum and L. lactis could modulate the immune system and increase shrimp resistance to VPAHPND infection presumably via upregulation of the two LvproPO transcripts.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria are a common group of probiotics that have been widely studied and used in aquaculture. In the present study, we isolated Lactococcus lactis HNL12 from the gut of wild humpback grouper (Cromileptes altivelis) and explored its probiotic properties. For this purpose, L. lactis HNL12 was added to the commercial fish feed. The results showed that HNL12 had high auto-aggregation ability and strong tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal stress. When C. altivelis consumed a diet containing 0 (control), 106, 108, or 1010 CFU/g HNL12 for four weeks, all of the groupers fed a diet with HNL12 had significantly increased percent weight gain (PWG), especially those fed with 108 CFU/g, which had a PWG of 231.45%. Compared to the control, fish fed with L. lactis HNL12 exhibited significantly increased survival rates following injection with Vibrio harveyi after one month. Immunological analysis showed that C. altivelis fed with HNL12 had (i) enhanced respiratory burst activity of head kidney macrophages, superoxide dismutase, acid phosphatase, and lysozyme activities of serum; (ii) an improved survival rate from 36% to 70%; and (iii) upregulated expression of a broad spectrum of immunity. Meanwhile, de novo transcriptome assembly yielded 89,314 unigenes, which were annotated by at least one of the reference databases (Nr, Swiss-Prot, GO, COG and KEGG). A total of 307 genes showed significantly different expression between the groups fed with or without added HNL12. GO and KEGG enrichment analyses of the significantly different expression gene categories and pathways were related to infectious diseases, antigen processing and presentation, and other immune system responses. These results indicate that L. lactis HNL12 is effective for enhancing the growth, immunity, and disease resistance of C. altivelis; this study also provides insight into the use of probiotics for commercial applications.

Abstract
Lactobacilli are recognized as probiotics on account of their health-promoting effects in the host. The aim of this review is to summarize current knowledge of the mechanisms of the adaption factors and main functions of lactobacilli that exert health-promoting effects in the host and to discuss important applications in animal and human health. The adaption mechanisms of lactobacilli facilitate interactions with the host and directly contribute to the beneficial nutritional, physiological, microbiological, and immunological effects in the host. Besides, the application of probiotic lactobacilli will increase our understanding of practical uses based on the roles of these organisms in immunoregulation, antipathogenic activities, and enhancement of the epithelial barrier.

Abstract
To study the effects of probiotic-added food on the survival and growth of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai Ino), the expression levels of nonspecific immune genes and the anti-Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection were examined. During an 8-week culturing experiment in an indoor aquarium and a 2-week V. parahaemolyticus artificial infection experiment, the control group was fed with untreated food once a day, while the experimental groups (L1, L2 and L3) were fed with Lactobacillus pentosus added food. The concentration of probiotics in the experimental food was 103 cfu/g (L1), 105 cfu/g (L2) and 107 cfu/g (L3), respectively. The results showed that the survival rate, shell length-specific growth rate, and the food conversion rate (FCR) of abalones in L1 and L2 were significantly higher than the control group. The food intake of abalones in L3 was significantly lower than that in L1, L2 and the control group, but there was no significant difference in FCR identified between L1, L2 and L3. In the L. pentosus-added groups, the total number of blood lymphocytes, lysozyme activity, acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, and expression levels of Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) and thioredoxin peroxidase (TPx) were significantly higher than the control group, while the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly lower than the control group. The phagocytic activity of blood lymphocytes, catalase activity and the expression levels of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) of abalones in the control group were significantly lower than that in L1 and L2, but there was no significant difference when compared with L3. The levels of O2-, NO produced by respiratory burst of blood lymphocytes and the expression levels of catalase (CAT) in L1 and L2 were significantly higher than both L3 and the control group. Seven days after infection with V. parahaemolyticus, all abalones in the control group were dead. After 14 days the cumulative mortality rate of abalones in the L. pentosus-added groups was significantly lower than that in the control group. Therefore, the 103 cfu/g and 105 cfu/g L. pentosus-added food not only promoted food intake and growth of abalones, but also improved their non-specific immunity and reduced V. parahaemolyticus infection, indicating that this strain is a good potential candidate for probiotic added food in the aquaculture industry.

Abstract
A feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of four strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) [i.e. Lactobacillus plantarum LL11 (LP), Weissella confuse LS13 (WC), Lactococcus lactis LH8 (LL) and Enterococcus faecalis LC3 (ES)] isolated from marine fish on growth, immune response and expression levels of immune-related gens in body wall of juvenile sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. As a result, sea cucumber had better growth performance fed supplementation of LP and ES than the control group (P < .05). Survival rate in each LAB supplementation group was significantly higher than that in control group after Vibrio splendidus challenge (P < .05). In regards to the enzyme activities, LP supplementation significantly imporved the enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase (AKP) (P < .05), acid phosphatase (ACP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), ES supplementation significantly imporved AKP activity (P < .05), and WC supplementation significantly imporved ACP activity (P < .05). However, lysozyme (LSZ) activity was not significantly changed in the four LAB supplementation treatments (P > .05). For the gene expression levels, different expression patterns were observed among four groups, heat shock proteins (HSP60, HSP70 and HSP90) and caspase-2 showed dramatic up-regulation at 30 d while NF-kappa-B transcription factor p65 was down-regulated at 15 d and up-regulated at 30 d, and nitric oxide synthase was down-regulated at both timepoints in almost all the four groups. In conclusion, the four LAB strains screened from marine fish supplemented in diets indicated positive effects on immune response for A. japonicus, especially, the L. plantarum LL11 and E. faecalis LC3 indicated better growth performance.

Abstract
The gut microbiome of lower termites comprises protists and bacteria that help these insects to digest cellulose and to thrive on wood. The composition of the termite gut microbiome correlates with phylogenetic distance of the animal host and host ecology (diet) in termites collected from their natural environment. However, carryover of transient microbes from host collection sites are an experimental concern and might contribute to the ecological imprints on the termite gut microbiome. Here, we set out to test whether an ecological imprint on the termite gut microbiome remains, when focusing on the persistent microbiome. Therefore, we kept five termite species under strictly controlled dietary conditions and subsequently profiled their protist and bacterial gut microbial communities using 18S and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. The species differed in their ecology; while three of the investigated species were wood-dwellers that feed on the piece of wood they live in and never leave except for the mating flight, the other two species were foragers that regularly leave their nests to forage for food. Despite these prominent ecological differences, protist microbiome structure aligned with phylogenetic relatedness of termite host species. Conversely, bacterial communities seemed more flexible, suggesting that microbiome structure aligned more strongly with the foraging and wood-dwelling ecologies. Interestingly, protist and bacterial community alpha-diversity correlated, suggesting either putative interactions between protists and bacteria, or that both types of microbes in the termite gut follow shared structuring principles. Taken together, our results add to the notion that bacterial communities are more variable over evolutionary time than protist communities and might react more flexibly to changes in host ecology.

Abstract
A 45-day feeding trial followed by an acute stress test of low salinity was done to evaluate effects of Lactobacillus plantarum on growth performance and anti-stress capability of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Shrimp were randomly allocated in 15 tanks (100 shrimp per tank) and divided into 5 treatments with 3 replicates. Triplicate tanks were fed with a control diet or diets containing different treatments of L. plantarum (fermentation supernatant (FS), live bacteria (LB), dead bacteria (DB) and cell-free extract (CE) of L. plantarum) as treatment groups. Growth performance including weight gain (WGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and specific growth rate (SGR) were determined after feeding 45 days. Anti-stress capacity was evaluated by determining the gene expression of ProPO, SOD and Lys in gut of shrimp at the end of feeding trial and again at 96 h post-stress test. Results indicated that supplementation of L. plantarum into diet had significantly improved growth performance of L. vannamei. On the other hand, L. plantarum supplementation had no significant effects on the gene expression of SOD and Lys in gut of shrimp cultured under normal condition for 45 days. Supplementation of L. plantarum had increased survivability of L. vannamei having higher survival rates compared to the control group. However, statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the control group and treatments. Compared with the control group, supplementation of L. plantarum significantly improved the resistance of L. vannamei against the stress of acute low salinity, as indicated by higher survival rate as well as higher transcript levels of ProPo, SOD and Lys gene. Our findings suggested that L. plantarum, especially cell-free extract of L. plantarum has improved the anti-stress capacity of L. vannamei and could serve as a potential feed additive that helps shrimp to overcome environmental stresses.

Abstract
The widespread overuse of antibiotics in aquaculture has led to the emergence of antibiotic-resistance shrimp pathogens, the negative impact on shrimp gut microbiota, and the presence of antimicrobial residues in aquaculture products, with negative consequences on human health. Alternatively, probiotics have positive effects on immunological responses and productive performance of aquatic animals. In this study, three probiotic bacteria, (Bacillus licheniformis MAt32, B. subtilis MAt43 and B. subtilis subsp. subtilis GAtB1), isolated from the Anadara tuberculosa were included in diets for juvenile shrimp, Litopenaeus vannamei, to evaluate their effects on growth, survival, disease prevalence, and immune-related gene expression. Shrimp naturally infected with WSSV and IHHNV were fed with the basal diet (control, T1) and diets supplemented with four levels of bacilli probiotic mix (1:1:1) at final concentration of (T2) 1 × 106, (T3) 2 × 106, (T4) 4 × 106, and (T5) 6 × 106 CFU g-1 of feed. The specific growth rate of shrimp was significantly higher in T2 than in T1 (control) treatment, and the final growth as well as the survival were similar among treated groups. The prevalence of WSSV and IHHNV infected shrimp was reduced in T2 and T4 treatments, respectively, compared with control. The mRNA expression of proPO gene was higher in treatment T4 than control. The LvToll1 gene was significantly up-regulated in treatments T4 and T5 compared to control. The SOD gene was up-regulated in treatment T5 compared to control. In contrast, the mRNA expression of the Hsp70 gene was down-regulated in treatments T4 and T5 respect to control, and the TGase gene remained unaffected by the level of bacillus probiotic mix. As conclusion, the bacilli probiotic mix (Bacillus spp.) enhanced immune-related gene expression in WSSV and IHHNV naturally infected shrimp. This is the first report of probiotic potential of bacteria isolated from A. tuberculosa on the immune response and viral prevalence in shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei.

Abstract
During evolution of animals, their co-evolution with bacteria has generally been ignored. Recent studies have provided evidences that the symbiotic bacteria in the animal gut can either be essential or contributing to the plasticity of the host. The Crustacea includes crab, crayfish, lobster, and shrimp and represents the second largest subphylum on the planet. Although there are already studies investigating the intestinal bacterial communities in crustaceans, none of them has examined the microbiota in different parts of the digestive system during the gonad development of the host. Here, we utilized a new shrimp model Neocaridina denticulata and sequenced the 16S rRNA using the Ion Torrent platform to survey the bacterial populations colonizing the hepatopancreas, foregut, and intestine, including midgut and hindgut, of the early, mid, and late ovarian maturation stages of the shrimp. The predominant bacteria phylum was found to be Proteobacteria, with more than 80 % reads from the gut flora at the early gonad development belonged to a Coxiella-type bacterium. Distinct bacterial communities can be detected between the hepatopancreas and gut, although no significant difference could be revealed between the different regions of the gut investigated. Surprisingly, during the gonad development, bacterial diversity changed rapidly in the gut but not the hepatopancreas. This study provides the first evidence that microbiota modified differentially in specific regions of the digestive tract during gonadal development of crustaceans.

Abstract
This review describes the main types of antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) synthesised by crustaceans, primarily those identified in shrimp, crayfish, crab and lobster. It includes an overview of their range of microbicidal activities and the current landscape of our understanding of their gene expression patterns in different body tissues. It further summarises how their expression might change following various types of immune challenges. The review further considers proteins or protein fragments from crustaceans that have antimicrobial properties but are more usually associated with other biological functions, or are derived from such proteins. It discusses how these unconventional AMPs might be generated at, or delivered to, sites of infection and how they might contribute to crustacean host defence in vivo. It also highlights recent work that is starting to reveal the extent of multi-functionality displayed by some decapod AMPs, particularly their participation in other aspects of host protection. Examples of such activities include proteinase inhibition, phagocytosis, antiviral activity and haematopoiesis.

Abstract
Aquatic animals harbor a great number of microorganisms with interesting biological and biochemical diversity. Besides serving as the natural defense system of the host, the utilization potential of this microbial association has been identified particularly as reservoirs of candidate probiotics. Host-derived probiotics have gained popularity in recent years as they offer an alternative source of beneficial microbes to the industry that is customarily dependent on the use of terrestrial microorganisms. At present, there is an overwhelming number of candidate probiotics in aquaculture but their large-scale application is restricted by bio-technological concerns and fragmentary documented probiotic actions. This paper presents the current understanding on the use of probiotics as a sustainable alternative that promotes health and welfare in fish and penaeids. In particular, this paper discusses the relevance of host microbiota and its potential as a source of candidate probiotics. It also revisits the interaction between probiotics and host immunity to provide the foundation of the immunomodulatory functions of host-derived probiotics. Several studies demonstrating the immunomodulatory capabilities of host-derived candidate probiotics are given to establish the current knowledge and provide avenues for future research and development in this thematic area of probiotics research in aquaculture.

Abstract
Lactococcus lactis subsp. cremoris A17, isolated from Taiwan fermented cabbage, is the first sequenced strain of L. lactis subsp. cremoris with immunomodulatory activity and antiallergic functions. The resulting A17 draft genome contains 2,679,936 bp and indicates that A17 is a potential exopolysaccharide-producing strain without any known virulence gene.

Abstract
Turbot (Scophthalmus maximus L.) is an important commercial marine flatfish. Its production may be affected by bacterial diseases that cause severe economical losses, mainly tenacibaculosis and vibriosis, provoked by Tenacibaculum maritimum and Vibrio splendidus, respectively. An alternative or complementary strategy to chemotherapy and vaccination for the control of these diseases is the use of probiotics. In this work, we report the in vitro and in vivo potential of eight lactic acid bacteria (LAB), previously isolated from fish, seafood and fish products intended for human consumption, as turbot probiotics. Seven out of the eight LAB exerted direct antimicrobial activity against, at least, four strains of T. maritimum and V. splendidus. All LAB survived in seawater at 18 °C for 7 days, and withstood exposure to pH 3.0 and 10% (v/v) turbot bile; however, they differed in cell surface hydrophobicity (8.2-21.7%) and in their ability to adhere to turbot skin (1.2-21.7%) and intestinal (0.7-2.1%) mucus. Most of the tested strains inhibited the binding of turbot pathogens to the mucus. Leuconostoc mesenteroides subsp. cremoris SMM69 and Weissella cibaria P71 were selected based on their strong antimicrobial activity against T. maritimum and V. splendidus, good probiotic properties, and different adhesion ability to skin mucus and capacity to inhibit the adhesion of turbot pathogens to mucus. These two LAB strains were harmless when administered by bath to turbot larvae and juveniles; moreover, real-time PCR on the transcription levels of the immunity-related genes encoding IL-1β, TNF-α, lysozyme, C3, MHC-Iα and MHC-IIα in five organs (head-kidney, spleen, liver, intestine and skin) revealed the ability of these LAB to stimulate their expression in turbot juveniles, especially the non-specific immunity associated genes in mucosal tissues. Based on our results, Lc. cremoris SMM69 and W. cibaria P71 may be considered as suitable probiotic candidates for turbot farming.

Abstract
The immune system has an impact on the metabolic performance in vertebrates, thus the metabolic effects of immune cells are receiving intense attention today in the biomedical field. However, the evolutionary origin of the immunity-metabolism interaction is still uncertain. In this review, I show that mollusks and crustaceans integrate immune functions to a metabolic organ, the midintestinal gland ("hepatopancreas"). In these animals, the epithelial cells of the midintestinal gland are major sources of immune molecules, such as lectins, hemocyanin, ferritin, antibacterial and antiviral proteins, proteolytic enzymes and nitric oxide. There is crosstalk between midintestinal gland cells and phagocytes, which aids the initiation of the immune response and the clearance of pathogens. The midintestinal gland is thereby an integrated organ of immunity and metabolism. It is likely that immunity was the primary function of the midintestinal gland cells and that their role in the intermediate metabolism has evolved during the course of their further specialization.
