Abstract
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is a complex, chronic metabolic disorder characterized by impaired regulation of blood glucose levels. Zinc (Zn) is an essential trace elements that plays a role in various physiological processes within the body, including those related to diabetes. The current study was investigated the effect of Zn supplementation on hemorheological parameters in a rat model of DM. After induction of DM, 32 male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: control, Zn, DM, and Zn+DM. Whole blood viscosity (WBV) was determined by using digital cone and plate viscometer and plasma viscosity (PV) was determined by a Coulter Harkness capillary viscometer. The rats in the DM Group showed a decrease in both Zn levels and body weight, as well as an increase in glucose levels when compared to the control group. Diabetic rats supplemented with Zn displayed lower blood glucose levels and higher concentrations of Zn compared to the DM Group. The higher PV and lower hematocrit level were measured in DM Group than control group and lower PV, higher hematocrit level were measured in Zn+DM group than DM Group. The WBV was measured at four different shear rates (57.6-115.2 - 172.8-230.4 s -1). A statistically significant increase was observed in the DM group compared to the control group. Additionally, a statistically significant decrease was observed in the Zn+DM Group compared to the DM Group at a shear rate of 230.4 s-1. Erythrocyte rigidity index (Tk) and oxygen delivery index (ODI) were computed under conditions of high shear rate. The rats in the DM group exhibited a reduction in ODI and an elevation in Tk in comparison to the control group. Conversely, the diabetic rats supplemented with Zn exhibited decreased Tk and increased ODI compared to the DM Group. Zn supplementation seems to have a potential beneficial effect for protecting adverse affect of diabetes on hemorheogical parameters and for maintaining vascular health.

Abstract
Mn (Manganese, Mn) is an essential trace element involved in various biological processes such as the regulation of immune, nervous and digestive system functions. However, excessive Mn exposure can lead to immune damage. Occupational workers in cement and ferroalloy manufacturing and other related industries are exposed to low levels of Mn for a long time. Mn exposure is one of the important occupational hazards, but the research on the effect of Mn on the immune system of the occupational population is not complete, and there is no reliable biomarker. Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the immunotoxicity of Mn from the soluble immune checkpoint TIM-3 (T-cell immunoglobulin and mucin containing protein 3, TIM-3) and complement C3. A total of 144 Mn-exposed workers were recruited from a bus manufacturing company and a railroad company in Henan Province. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer was used to detect the concentration of RBC Mn (Red blood cell Mn, RBC Mn), and ELISA kits were used to detect serum complement C3 and TIM-3. Finally, the subjects were statistically analyzed by dividing them into low and high Mn groups based on the median RBC Mn concentration. We found that Mn exposure resulted in elevated serum TIM-3 expression and decreased complement C3 expression in workers; that serum TIM-3 and complement C3 expression showed a dose-response relationship with RBC Mn; and that the mediating effect of complement C3 between RBC Mn and TIM-3 was found to be significant. The above findings indicate that this study has a preliminary understanding of the effect of Mn exposure on the immune system of the occupational population exposed to Mn, and complement C3 and TIM-3 may be biomarkers of Mn exposure, which may provide clues for the prevention and control of Mn occupational hazards.

Abstract
To investigate the relationship between the correlation ratios of selenium (Se) and other elements and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) among older adults. A total of 1000 individuals participated in our research analysis. The concentrations of elements in whole blood were determined using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry to reflect their exposure levels. Participants' cognitive function was assessed using the Mini-Mental State Examination. Logistic regression analysis was used to evaluate the relationship between elemental ratios and MCI. Se concentration was positively correlated with red blood cell count (r = 0.219, p < 0.001), haemoglobin level (r = 0.355, p < 0.001), haematocrit (r = 0.215, p < 0.001), mean corpuscular haemoglobin (r = 0.294, p < 0.001) and mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration (r = 0.428, p < 0.001) and negatively correlated with red cell volume distribution width-standard deviation (r = -0.232, p < 0.001) and platelet distribution width (r = -0.382, p < 0.001). Compared with the normal group, the ratios of Se/vanadium (V), Se/lead (Pb) and Se/cadmium (Cd) in the whole blood of the MCI group were significantly lower (all p < 0.001), while the ratios of manganese (Mn)/Se and iron (Fe)/Se were higher (all p < 0.001). The increase in the ratios of Se/V, Se/Pb and Se/Cd is related to a decreased risk of MCI among older adults; contrarily, an increase in the ratios of Mn/Se and Fe/Se may be a risk factor for MCI.

Abstract
The majority of epidemiological investigations on metal exposures and lipid metabolism employed cross-sectional designs and focused on individual metal. We explored the associations between metal mixture exposures and longitudinal changes in lipid profiles and potential sexual heterogeneity. We recruited 250 men and 73 women, aged 40 years at baseline (2012), and followed them up in 2020, from the manganese-exposed workers healthy cohort. We detected metal concentrations of blood cells at baseline with inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Lipid profiles were repeatedly measured over 8 years of follow-up. We performed sparse partial least squares (sPLS) model to evaluate multi-pollutant associations. Bayesian kernel machine regression was utilized for metal mixtures as well as evaluating their joint impacts on lipid changes. In sPLS models, a positive association was found between manganese and change in total cholesterol (TC) (beta = 0.169), while a negative association was observed between cobalt (beta = - 0.134) and change in low density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) (beta = - 0.178) among overall participants, which were consistent in men. Interestingly, rubidium was positively associated with change in LDL-C (beta = 0.273) in women, while copper was negatively associated with change in TC (beta = - 0.359) and LDL-C (beta = - 0.267). Magnesium was negatively associated with change in TC (beta = - 0.327). We did not observe the significantly cumulative effect of metal mixtures on lipid changes. In comparison to other metals, manganese had a more significant influence on lipid change [group PIP (0.579) and conditional PIP (0.556) for TC change in men]. Furthermore, male rats exposed to manganese (20 mg/kg) had higher levels of LDL-C in plasma and more apparent inflammatory infiltration, vacuolation of liver cells, nuclear pyknosis, and fatty change than the controls. These findings highlight the potential role of metal mixtures in lipid metabolism with sex-dependent heterogeneity. More researches are needed to explore the underlying mechanisms.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate whether aluminum chloride (AlCl3) causes hematological changes in the peripheral blood of Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats. Five groups of female SD rats were intragastrically administered with 4 different concentrations of AlCl3 for 5 days a week for a total of 90 days. The aluminum concentration was determined via graphite furnace atomic absorption spectroscopy. Analysis of serum iron-kinetic profiles, blood cytometry outcomes, and blood smears of the blood samples. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Raman spectroscopy were used to search for structural and ultrastructural changes, respectively. Blood aluminum concentration ranged 12.38-16.24 μg/L with no significant difference between experimental treatments. At the AlCl3 concentration of 40 mg Al/kg bw of rats/day, the mean ferritin value in the serum iron kinetic profile was 29.81±6.1 ng/mL, and this value showed a significant difference between experimental treatments. Blood cytometry revealed that there were 6.45-7.11×106 cells/μL erythrocytes, 8.91-9.32×103 cells/μL leukocytes, and 477.2-736.3×103 cells/μL platelets along with a hemoglobin of 37.38-41.93 g/dL and hematocrit level of 37.38-41.93%; the experimental treatments showed no significant differences. Erythrocyte structural analysis using SEM showed no differences between experimental treatments, whereas ultrastructural evaluation using Raman spectroscopy made it possible to identify the following bands: 741, 1123, 1350, 1578, and 1618 cm-1, which were respectively associated with the following vibrational modes and compounds: vibration of the tryptophan ring, asymmetric C-O-C stretching of glucose, C-H curve of tryptophan, C=C stretching of the heme group, and C-N stretching of the heme group, with no significant differences between experimental treatments. Therefore, AlCl3 administration does not induce ultrastructural changes in the erythrocyte membrane. This study revealed that serum ferritin concentration was the only parameter affected by AlCl3 exposure at 40 mg of Al/kg bw of rats/day.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Trace elements (TE) are vital for cellular mechanisms at biological, chemical and molecular levels. The effects of TE in diagnosis, progression and treatment of essential thrombocytosis (ET), which is one of the chronic myeloproliferative neoplasms is a rare clonal stem cell disease characterized by increased thrombocyte numbers with impaired function, have not been elucidated in detail yet. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of TE alterations in an ET model and the efficacy of TE in ET treatment protocol by means of a vast number of TE. METHODS Study groups were categorized as patients with ET diagnosis (ET group, n:30), patients with reactive thrombocytosis secondary to iron deficiency anemia (IDA-RT) (IDA-RT group, n:30) and healthy controls (HC group, n:30). Serum levels of copper (Cu), iron (Fe), cobalt (Co), chromium (Cr), aluminum (Al), silicon (Si), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), manganese (Mn), boron (B) and magnesium (Mg) were analyzed utilizing inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer instrument (ICP-OES). Statistical analysis was evaluated using SPSS 23.0. RESULTS ET group had statistically higher serum levels of Co and Mg (p < 0.05), Ni and Mn (p < 0.001), and lower Si (p < 0.05) than IDA-RT group. ET group had statistically higher serum levels of Co and Mn (p < 0.05), and Ni (p < 0.001), and lower Al, Si and Se (p < 0.001) than HC group. Serum levels of Fe, Al and Se (p < 0.001), and Mg (p < 0.01), and Zn (p < 0.05) in IDA-RT group were significantly lower than HC group. CONCLUSION This novel study pointed out that alterations of many serum TE by means of both increment or decrement might have close relationship with mechanisms and complications of ET onset and follow-up. We consider that further research of TE would elucidate ethiopathogenesis and prognosis of ET. Thus, analysis of serum trace elements in essential thrombocytosis patients may be an important protocol by means of diagnosis, treatment and follow-up intervals.

Abstract
The objective of the study was to evaluate the association between smoking and essential metal (Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mn, V, Zn) and metalloid (Se) levels in hair and serum of adult women using inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In this cross-sectional study, a total of 344 women 20-70 years old including 199 smokers and 145 non-smoking women were enrolled. Serum Cu, Fe, and Zn levels in smoking women were found to be 6%, 8%, and 3% lower of levels in non-smokers, respectively. In contrast, circulating Mn, V, and especially Cr concentrations in smoking women exceeded the respective values in non-smoking women by 5%, 14%, and 54%. Hair Fe and Se levels in smoking women were 17% and 23% lower as compared to non-smoking controls, respectively. In multiple regression models, smoking severity was inversely associated with serum and hair Se concentrations, whereas the relationship to serum and hair Cr was positive. In addition, serum Zn and hair Fe levels were found to be inversely associated with the number of cigarettes per day. These findings hypothesize that health hazards of smoking may be at least in part be mediated by alteration in essential metal and metalloid metabolism.

The Relationship between Metal Exposure and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in the General US Population: NHANES 2015–2016. Abstract
The effects of metal on pulmonary function are inconsistent, and abnormal distribution of metals can decrease lung function. However, the effects of metals exposure on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) are still unclear. This study aims to explore the relationship between metal exposure and COPD risk. Cross-sectional data from the National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) 2015–2016 was analyzed. Inductively coupled plasma dynamic reaction cell mass spectrometry (ICP-DRC-MS) was used to measure the metals concentration in the blood. The multiple linear regression and restricted cubic spline (RCS) were used to analyze the relationship between metals exposure and COPD risk. In this study, 1399 participants were included, of which 107 participants were diagnosed with COPD using self-reported chronic bronchitis, emphysema, and COPD. The second and third tertiles of copper increased the COPD risk by 1.98-fold (95% CI: 1.08–3.62) and 2.43-fold (95% CI: 1.32–4.48) compared with the first tertile, using p = 0.005 for the trend after adjusting for the covariates. RCS showed a positive linear correlation between copper and COPD risk (p = 0.006 for overall association) in all participants. When stratified by sex, the multi-factor analysis showed that the third tertile of copper increased male’s COPD risk by 3.42-fold (95% CI: 1.52–7.76), with p = 0.003 for the trend, and RCS also showed a positive linear correlation (p = 0.013 for overall association). Although RCS showed that selenium can reduce the COPD risk (p = 0.008 for overall association) in males, an association between selenium and COPD was not observed (p > 0.05). Our findings suggest that a high concentration of copper may increase COPD risk in males in the general US population, and more research is needed to explore its possible mechanism of action.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn) may improve cardiometabolic health with its anti-oxidative ability. However, epidemiological evidence on the overall and sex-specific relationship between Mn exposure and metabolic syndrome (MetS) has been inconclusive. We evaluated the associations of urinary (n = 1713) and blood (n = 3335) Mn levels with the prevalence of MetS, its components (elevated waist circumference, impaired glucose metabolism, elevated blood pressure and dyslipidemia) and sex-dependent heterogeneities among participants in the United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey 2011-2016. After adjusting for multiple covariates and the levels of other metals (Arsenic, Barium, Cadmium, Mercury, Molybdenum, Tin and Uranium), urinary Mn at the third quartile associated with a lower odd of MetS (odds ratio [OR] = 0.55, 95% confidence interval [C.I.] = 0.32-0.97), elevated waist circumference (OR = 0.56, 95% C.I. = 0.36-0.86) and elevated fasting plasma glucose (OR = 0.46, 95% C.I. = 0.27-0.76) among overall participants, and lower odds of MetS (OR = 0.40, 95% C.I. = 0.16-0.99), elevated waist circumference (OR = 0.39, 95% C.I. = 0.19-0.81) and elevated fasting plasma glucose (OR = 0.44, 95% C.I. = 0.22-0.90) among men. The U-shaped dose-response relationship between urinary Mn and MetS (P non-linear = 0.008) was observed among all participants. We did not observe the significant associations of blood Mn with the prevalence of MetS. Compared with other metals, urinary Mn played a less important role in development of MetS (posterior inclusion probabilities [PIP] = 0.49 for Mn versus 0.54 to 0.91 for other metals), but the contribution of blood Mn (PIP = 0.59 versus 0.60 to 0.61) was similar to other blood metals (Cadmium, Lead, Mercury and Selenium). These findings have provided new evidence of the potential roles of Mn in cardiometabolic health, and the needs to explore how Mn interacts with multiple metals in sex-specific manner.

Abstract
Serum concentrations of magnesium and manganese may be associated with increased chronic obstructive pulmonary disease exacerbation risk. However, associations with other aspects of asthma-chronic obstructive pulmonary disease overlap, pulmonary function test results and health status, have been studied less extensively. The aim of this study was to investigate the associations between serum concentrations of trace elements and T lymphocyte subsets, FeNO, and COPD-related questionnaire scores in individuals with ACO and the potential impact of these parameters on lung function. All the patients met the diagnostic criteria of ACO and were divided into two groups (group A, mild-moderate; group B, severe-very severe) by their specific characteristics. Pulmonary function testing and serum Mg and serum Mn and FeNO were measured. Four hundred sixty-five patients were screened, and 42 were included. Group A had significantly higher Mg and Fe concentrations than group B. No significant differences were seen in the serum concentration of any other trace element between the two groups. Serum Mg and Mn were correlated with FEV1% predicted (p < 0.01). Group A had a significantly higher FeNO concentration than group B (p = 0.005). The scores on CAT (p = 0.011) and mMRC (p = 0.008) in group A were lower than in group B. The low-FeNO group had a significantly lower concentration of serum Mg than the high-FeNO group (p = 0.03). Pulmonary function declined faster (p < 0.05) in the low-FeNO group than the high-FeNO group. Serum Mg concentration may indicate protective effects against lung function loss in ACO. This implies that FeNO might be a biomarker for identifying individuals with ACO who might benefit from inhaled corticosteroid therapy. Serum Mg and FeNO were associated with ACO severity. However, their role in guiding personalised treatment of individuals with ACO needs to be further investigated.

Abstract
Nutritional immunity is the sequestration of bioavailable trace metals such as iron, zinc and copper by the host to limit pathogenicity by invading microorganisms. As one of the most conserved activities of the innate immune system, limiting the availability of free trace metals by cells of the immune system serves not only to conceal these vital nutrients from invading bacteria but also operates to tightly regulate host immune cell responses and function. In the setting of chronic lung disease, the regulation of trace metals by the host is often disrupted, leading to the altered availability of these nutrients to commensal and invading opportunistic pathogenic microbes. Similarly, alterations in the uptake, secretion, turnover and redox activity of these vitally important metals has significant repercussions for immune cell function including the response to and resolution of infection. This review will discuss the intricate role of nutritional immunity in host immune cells of the lung and how changes in this fundamental process as a result of chronic lung disease may alter the airway microbiome, disease progression and the response to infection.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Onychocryptosis (ingrown toenail) and onychomycosis are common pathologies of the toenail and affecting many people. Since levels of trace elements have been shown to vary in certain diseases, in the presented work, chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), magnesium (Mg), manganese (Mn), selenium (Se), and zinc (Zn) levels of toenail and serum samples of healthy individuals and patients with onychocryptosis and onychomycosis were compared. METHODS Serum and toenail samples of 88 voluntary subjects (healthy n = 24; onychomycosis n = 24; onychocryptosis n = 40) aged between 19-80 years were collected. Levels of trace elements in the samples were analyzed by using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrophotometer (ICP-OES Thermo iCAP - 6000). The differences in medians between the groups for elements were evaluated with Kruskal -Wallis H test with post hoc for pairwise comparisons in SPSS 18. RESULTS Mg (p < 0.001) and Mn (p = 0.002) levels were significantly increased whereas Zn (p = 0.011) level was decreased in toenails of patients with onychomycosis compared to healthy subjects. Although Mg and Mn levels were higher in female subjects with onychomycosis (p = 0.001; p = 0.019), Mn was only increased in male subjects (p = 0.015). Mg was the only trace element found to be independent of sex, age, and smoking status in patients with onychomycosis. However, no significant difference has been found in serum trace element levels neither between any groups nor toenail trace element levels of patients with onychocryptosis and healthy subjects. CONCLUSION As a response of the human body to pathogens like fungi in toenails, Mg, Mn and Zn levels vary. Especially the role of Mg ions in onychomycosis needs to be investigated more specifically.

Abstract
In the present work, analytical method for the determination of trace elements in adipose tissue by means of inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES) was developed. Adipose tissue from two groups of the patients with obesity (with and without metabolic syndrome) was investigated. The main aim of this study was to reveal some differences and regularities in concentrations of trace elements in adipose tissue between these two groups of the individuals. Moreover, different types of adipose tissue (subcutaneous, preperitoneal, and visceral) were analyzed separately in order to investigate distribution of metals between these types in different groups of obese people. Al, Ba, Ca, Co, Cu, Cr, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Mn, Na, Ni, Sr, and Zn were selected for the quantitative determination. However, only 6 elements (Na, K, Ca, Fe, Mg, and Zn) were determined in all analyzed samples independently of the type of adipose tissue and presence of metabolic disorder of the patient. Concentrations of Ca, Fe, K, and Na were found to be strongly dependent on the type of adipose tissue. Other elements in terms of detection frequency in adipose tissue samples can be arranged in the following sequence Sr (94.7%), Cr (86.2%), Cu (24.6%), Li (18%), Ba (1.8%), Co (0.05%). The concentrations of Al, Mn, and Ni were found to be lower than limit of detection (LOD) in all analyzed samples. Comparison of metal distribution depending on the type of adipose tissue of people with and without metabolic syndrome is discussed in this work.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Projectile foreign bodies are known to cause chronic heavy metal toxicity due to the release of metal into the bloodstream. However, the local effect around the metallic object has not been investigated and the main goal of our study is to examine the influence of the object in close proximity of the object. CASE PRESENTATION A 36-year-old Caucasian woman with one metallic pellet close to her sciatic nerve due to a previous shotgun injury at the gluteal area presented with a diagnosis of recurrent lumbar disk herniation at L4-5 level. A physical examination confirmed chronic neuropathy and she underwent a two-stage surgery. The surgery included removal of the foreign body, followed by discectomy and fusion at the involved level. During the removal of the metallic foreign body, a tissue sample around the pellet and another tissue sample from a remote area were obtained. The samples were analyzed by scanning acoustic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. Lead, chromium, copper, cadmium, iron, manganese, selenium, and zinc elements in tissue, blood, and serum specimens were detected by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. CONCLUSIONS An acoustic impedance map of the tissue closer to the metallic body showed higher values indicating further accumulation of elements. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy results confirmed scanning acoustic microscopy results by measuring a higher concentration of elements closer to the metallic body. Scanning electron microscopy images showed that original structure was not disturbed far away; however, deformation of the structure existed in the tissue closer to the foreign body. Element analysis showed that element levels within blood and serum were more or less within acceptable ranges; on the other hand, element levels within the tissues showed pronounced differences indicating primarily lead intoxication in the proximity of the metallic body. We can state that residues of metallic foreign bodies of gunshot injuries cause chronic metal infiltration to the surrounding tissue and induce significant damage to nearby neural elements; this is supported by the results of scanning acoustic microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy.
