Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Various cross-sectional studies have observed an association between high circulating concentrations of the adipokine chemerin and an unfavorable metabolic profile. However, the prognostic value of chemerin for the risk of associated diseases and mortality was examined only in a few studies mostly using small and highly selected patient populations. We aimed to analyze the association between plasma chemerin concentrations and all-cause as well as cause-specific mortality in the general population. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS From the Study of Health in Pomerania (SHIP), participants of two independent cohorts (SHIP-START-1 [n = 3037], SHIP-TREND-0 [n = 4193]) were followed up for 15 and 9 years (median), respectively. The association between plasma chemerin and all-cause mortality was analyzed using multivariable Cox proportional hazard regression models. Additionally, cause-specific hazards for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer mortality were modeled considering competing events. RESULTS A total number of 507 and 208 deaths occurred during follow-up in SHIP-START-1 and SHIP-TREND-0, respectively. Multivariable regression analyses revealed a significant association between high plasma chemerin concentrations and greater overall mortality that was independent of major confounders. Each 30 ng/mL increase in chemerin was associated with a 17% higher risk of all-cause mortality (95%-confidence interval: 1.10-1.26). Cause-specific analyses further showed that the chemerin concentration was significantly associated with cancer mortality but not with CVD mortality. CONCLUSION The present study detected a positive association between plasma chemerin concentrations and all-cause mortality in a large population-based study sample. Cause-specific analyses have shown that chemerin is likely to play a decisive role in cancer-related deaths. However, a direct association with cardiovascular mortality could not be established.

Abstract
Chemerin is a novel adipokine that plays a major role in adipogenesis and lipid metabolism. It also induces inflammation and affects insulin signaling, steroidogenesis and thermogenesis. Consequently, it likely contributes to a variety of metabolic and cardiovascular diseases, including atherosclerosis, diabetes, hypertension and pre-eclampsia. This review describes its origin and receptors, as well as its role in various diseases, and subsequently summarizes how nutrition affects its levels. It concludes that vitamin A, fat, glucose and alcohol generally upregulate chemerin, while omega-3, salt and vitamin D suppress it. Dietary measures rather than drugs acting as chemerin receptor antagonists might become a novel tool to suppress chemerin effects, thereby potentially improving the aforementioned diseases. However, more detailed studies are required to fully understand chemerin regulation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE The development of arterial stiffness (AS) in obesity is a multifactorial and complex process. The pleomorphic actions of adipokines and their local activity in perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT) are potential modulators of AS appearance and progression. We aimed to assess the correlations between two adipokines (chemerin, adiponectin), PVAT morphological changes (adipocyte size, blood vessel wall thickness) and AS parameters in the special subgroup of patients with morbid obesity. MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 25 patients with morbid obesity and 25 non-obese patients, who were age- and gender-matched, untreated for cardiovascular risk factors, and admitted to hospital for laparoscopic surgical procedures (bariatric surgery for morbid obesity and non-inflammatory benign pathology surgery for non-obese patients). Before the surgical procedures, we evaluated demographic and anthropometric data and biochemical parameters including the studied adipokines. Arterial stiffness was evaluated using a Medexpert ArteriographTM TL2 device. In both groups, adipocyte size and vascular wall thickness as well as local adiponectin activity were analyzed in PVAT from intraoperative biopsies. RESULTS In our study, adiponectin (p = 0.0003), chemerin (p = 0.0001) and their ratio (p = 0.005) had statistically significant higher mean values in patients with morbid obesity compared to normal-weight patients. In patients with morbid obesity there were significant correlations between chemerin and AS parameters such as aortic pulse wave velocity (p = 0.006) and subendocardial viability index (p = 0.009). In the same group adipocyte size was significantly correlated with another AS parameter, namely, aortic systolic blood pressure (p = 0.030). In normal-weight patients, blood vessel wall thickness positively correlated with AS parameters such as brachial (p = 0.023) and aortic augmentation index (p = 0.023). An important finding was the negative adipoR1 and adipoR2 immunoexpression in PVAT adipocytes of patients with morbid obesity. Additionally, we found significant correlations between blood vessel wall thickness and blood fasting glucose (p < 0.05) in both groups. CONCLUSIONS Chemerin and adipocyte size could be predictive biomarkers for AS in patients with morbid obesity. Given the small number of patients included, our results need further validation.

Abstract
Objective. Adipose tissue is considered to be an endocrine organ that secretes bioactive substances known as adipokines that contribute to the pathophysiology of metabolic and coronary diseases related to obesity. In this study, various novel biomarkers, such as inflammatory markers that are pro-inflammatory (visfatin) and anti-inflammatory (omentin-1), as prognostic indicators for people with coronary artery disease (CAD) were investigated. Methods. In this study, 30 diabetic patients with CAD, 30 diabetic patients without CAD, and 30 healthy control counterparts were included. Serum omentin and visfatin concentrations were evaluated by solid-phase enzyme linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kit. Patients with established diagnosis of CAD based on angiography, ECG, and elevated cardiac marker level were included into the study. Patients with cardioembolic stroke, cerebral venous sinus thrombosis, CNS vasculitis, and hemorrhage due to trauma, tumor, vascular malformation, and coagulopathy were excluded. Results. The serum omentin-1 levels were significantly higher in the healthy controls in comparison with the diabetic group (p<0.0001) and serum visfatin levels were significantly higher in the diabetic group in comparison with the healthy controls (p<0.0001). The serum omentin levels were significantly higher in the diabetic group in comparison with the cardio-diabetic group (p<0.0001) and serum visfatin levels were significantly higher in the cardio-diabetic group in comparison with the diabetic group (p<0.0001). The serum omentin-1 showed negative correlation with the serum visfatin in the cardio-diabetic group. Conclusion. The adipokines, such as omentin and visfatin, may be good therapeutic candidates in preventing or ameliorating CAD.

Abstract
(1) Background: Obesity is closely connected to the pathophysiology of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs). Excess fat accumulation is associated with metabolic malfunctions that disrupt cardiovascular homeostasis by activating inflammatory processes that recruit immune cells to the site of injury and reduce nitric oxide levels, resulting in increased blood pressure, endothelial cell migration, proliferation, and apoptosis. Adipose tissue produces adipokines, such as chemerin, that may alter immune responses, lipid metabolism, vascular homeostasis, and angiogenesis. (2) Methods: We performed PubMed and MEDLINE searches for articles with English abstracts published between 1997 (when the first report on chemerin identification was published) and 2022. The search retrieved original peer-reviewed articles analyzed in the context of the role of chemerin in CVDs, explicitly focusing on the most recent findings published in the past five years. (3) Results: This review summarizes up-to-date findings related to mechanisms of chemerin action, its role in the development and progression of CVDs, and novel strategies for developing chemerin-targeting therapeutic agents for treating CVDs. (4) Conclusions: Extensive evidence points to chemerin's role in vascular inflammation, angiogenesis, and blood pressure modulation, which opens up exciting perspectives for developing chemerin-targeting therapeutic agents for the treatment of CVDs.

Abstract
Background Adipokine chemerin was proven to be associated with coronary artery disease (CAD), but its prognostic implications in CAD remain unclear. Methods This study consists of two parts, one is a basic study and the other is a clinical cohort study. First, we investigated the differential expression of six adipokines in the atherosclerotic mice model compared to mice with milder degrees of atherosclerosis and mice without atherosclerosis using microarray data. We then examined the potential of chemerin as a diagnostic and prognostic indicator in a CAD cohort. A total of 152 patients were enrolled in our study, including 77 patients with angiographically proven CAD and 75 control subjects without cardiovascular disease. Plasma adipokine chemerin levels were measured in all patients, and major adverse cardiovascular events (MACEs) were followed up, including ischemic stroke, non-fatal myocardial infarction, revascularization, and cardiovascular death. Results In the aortas of atherosclerotic mice, chemerin expression was up-regulated compared to control mice. The plasma chemerin levels of CAD patients were higher than those of non-CAD patients (128.93 ± 37.06 vs. 109.85 ± 27.47 mmol/L, respectively, P < 0.001). High chemerin levels were an independent predictor of CAD (β = 2.702, 95% CI, 1.344–5.431, P = 0.001). We followed up with patients for a median duration of 5.5 years (3.9–5.6). The Kaplan–Meier curves showed that patients in the high chemerin group had a significantly higher risk of MACEs than the low chemerin group in patients with CAD (log-rank P = 0.003), not with non-CAD (Log-rank P = 0.120). Furthermore, Cox multivariate analysis revealed that high chemerin levels were an independent predictor of MACEs (HR 2.267; 95% CI, 1.139–4.515; P = 0.020). Finally, the cellular study showed that chemerin is predominantly expressed in PBMC-derived macrophages. Conclusion Plasma chemerin levels were increased in the CAD patients, and a high chemerin level increased the risk of MACEs in CAD patients.

Abstract
Recent studies have revealed that fatty tissue, so far considered an energy storage organ, is also the source of many substances called adipokines, including chemerin which plays many important functions in the body. Chemerin stimulates adipocytes maturation and differentiation, as well as acts as a chemoattractant, which stimulates innate and acquired immunity. This adipokine participates in the early stages of acute inflammation as well as its suppression by reacting with the CMKLR1 receptor. In various diseases associated with inflammatory processes, the level of chemerin in the serum increases. It is also considered a marker for benign and malignant tumors. Explanation of the pathomechanisms involving this adipokine is of a high importance and may contribute to the development of new possibilities in the treatment of many diseases. The article presents the latest information on the role of chemerin in various pathological states, particularly in psoriasis.

Abstract
Background: Chemerin is an adipokine and a chemoattractant for leukocytes. Increased chemerin levels were observed in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). We investigated associations between chemerin and biochemical measurements or body composition in CAD patients. Methods: In the study, we included patients with stable CAD who had undergone percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) in the past. All patients had routine blood tests, and their insulin and chemerin serum levels were routinely measured. Body composition was assessed with the DEXA method. Results: The study group comprised 163 patients (mean age 59.8 ± years, 26% of females, n = 43). There was no significant difference in serum chemerin concentrations between patients with diabetes and the remaining ones: 306.8 ± 121 vs. 274.15 ± 109 pg/mL, p = 0.1. Chemerin correlated positively with the white blood cell (WBC) count, the neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, hsCRP, all fractions of cholesterol, triglycerides, platelet count, fasting insulin, and c-peptide. Chemerin levels were also correlated with total fat mass but only in a subgroup with normal glucose metabolism. Conclusion: In patients with CAD, serum chemerin levels are correlated with inflammation markers, insulin resistance, and an unfavorable lipid profile. Correlation with fat mass is dependent on glucose metabolism status. Depending on the presence of diabetes/prediabetes, the mechanisms regulating chemerin secretion may be different.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aims to analyse the association of chemerin levels with several metabolic, biochemical and haematological parameters in a large Taiwanese population with relative healthy status. DESIGN Cross-sectional study. METHODS Data of 4101 healthy participants without history of hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidaemia and renal insufficiency from Taiwan Biobank were analysed. The demographic, biochemical and haematologic parameters were retrieved from the database. Chemerin levels were measured using commercially available enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Univariate and multivariate analysis was performed to test the independent correlates of chemerin. RESULTS In the univariate analysis, circulating chemerin levels were positively associated with body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), systolic (SBP) and diastolic blood pressure (DBP), haemoglobin A1C (HbA1C), total cholesterol, triglyceride, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), creatinine, uric acid, alanine aminotransferase (ALT), gamma-glutamyl transferase (γ-GT), leucocyte and platelet counts both in men and women and negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) and total bilirubin. In the multivariate analysis, BMI, HbA1C, triglyceride, uric acid, γ-GT and platelet counts predicted chemerin levels independently both in men and in women with positive correlation, while eGFR, total bilirubin and HDL-C predicted circulating chemerin levels independently with negative correlation. CONCLUSIONS Chemerin level is independently associated with multiple metabolic, biochemical and haematological parameters. This study provides further evidence on the molecular basis linking obesity with several human diseases.

Abstract
Obesity is associated with a series of health problems. Adipocytes are a huge repository of energy as well as an important source of many adipokines. In obesity, adipocytes are dysfunctional with excessive production and secretion of pro-inflammatory adipokines, such as tumor necrosis factor α (TNF-α), leptin, and chemerin. Recent studies have revealed that chemerin plays an important role in modulating physiologic as well as pathophysiologic processes. For example, chemerin stimulates maturation and differentiation of pre-adipocytes, acts as a chemoattractant and facilitates innate and acquired immunity. Furthermore, chemerin participates in the early stage of acute inflammation by reacting with the ChemR23 receptor. In various inflammatory diseases, the serum chemerin is significantly increased. Additionally, chemerin is also considered as an important biomarker for benign and malignant tumors. Thus, elucidating the pathologic mechanisms of chemerin action may facilitate the development of new therapeutic modalities to treat diverse inflammatory diseases. In this review, we summarize current knowledge of chemerin and its role as an important regulator in modulating various inflammatory diseases. Mechanisms underlying chemerin function in diverse diseases are explored to better understand its biochemistry and mechanisms of action.

Recent studies have revealed that chemerin plays an essential role in the development of cardiovascular diseases. Autopsy studies found a strong correlation between the secretion of chemerin in peripheral tissues and aortic and coronary atherosclerosis. Plasma chemerin is a marker of
systemic inflammation and is associated with metabolic syndrome. Chemerin plays a vital role in vascular inflammation and atherogenesis. Plasma chemerin levels are increased in patients with dilated cardiomyopathy, and chemerin is associated with left ventricular dysfunction. In this review,
we focus on chemerin expression, chemerin processing, its biological function, and its role in the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The purpose of this study is to assess the basic nutritional status (body metabolic index, BMI) and its risk factors in the patients suffering from chronic obstructive emphysema. METHODS We described their demographic characteristics and comorbidity distribution of 2812 obstructive emphysema participants. Comparative analyzes were conducted on BMI with different demographic characteristics and comorbidities status, and comprehensive analysis on risk factors of excess weight and underweight in patients with different characters. RESULTS The prevalence of underweight and excess weight was 17.57% and 31.54% respectively. There were differences in the distribution of three types of body mass index among patients with different demographic characteristics and different comorbidities. The study found that age of 50 ~ 64 (odds ratio, OR: 2.99), tuberculosis (OR: 2.41), and low TG (OR: 2.32) were the risk factors about underweight. Low HDL-C (OR: 4.15), nonalcoholic fatter liver (NAFLD) (OR: 3.96), and age of 50 ~ 64 (OR: 2.72) were closely related to the excess weight of participants. CONCLUSIONS This study highlighted the prevalence of underweight and excess weight in patients among emphysema. Comorbidities were important risk factors of underweight or excess weight among chronic emphysema patients. These findings were important for the prevention and treatment of chronic obstructive emphysema in the future.

Abstract
This study was initiated to explore some novel biomarkers like pro-inflammatory markers (chemerin and visfatin) and anti-inflammatory marker (omentin-1) as prognostic factors for cardiovascular complications in type 2 diabetic patients. Forty diabetic patients without cardiovascular disease, 40 diabetic patients with cardiovascular disease and twenty healthy control counterparts were included in this study. Serum chemerin, omentin-1 and visfatin levels were quantified. Receiver operating characteristic curve analysis was done to identify the cut off value for each marker. The mean serum level of chemerin was 57.65 ± 15.69 ng/l in diabetic patients versus 93.97 ± 26.62 ng/l for the cardio-diabetic ones (P < 0.0001). The mean serum level of omentin-1 was 8.77 ± 1.53 ng/ml in diabetic patients versus 1.76 ± 0.96 ng/ml for the cardio-diabetic ones (P < 0.0001). The mean level of visfatin was 1.44 ± 0.71 ug/l in diabetic patients versus 3.92 ± 3.32 ug/l for the cardio-diabetic ones (P < 0.0001). Chemerin and Visfatin levels were significantly enhanced in the cardio-diabetic patients with increasing C-reactive protein (CRP), triglycerides (TG), fasting blood glucose (FBG), micro-albumin and cholesterol. Omentin-1 level was significantly reduced in the cardio-diabetic patients with increasing CRP, TG, FBG, and cholesterol. It was observed that the area under curve for chemerin, omentin-1and visfatin was 0.877, 0.998 and 0.735, respectively. In conclusion, this study evidences that the measuring serum levels of chemerin, omentin-1 and visfatin may help in the prognosis of cardiovascular complications in type 2 diabetic patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Adipokines, such as adiponectin and chemerin, regulate fat metabolism and are critical for the development of atherosclerosis. Investigating the correlations of adiponectin and chemerin with atherosclerosis in older adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) will shed light on the search for new markers for early diagnosis of diabetic atherosclerosis. METHODS A total of 120 older T2DM patients and nine healthy controls were enrolled in this study. The clinical parameters, such as brachial-ankle pulse wave velocity (ba-PWV), adiponectin, and chemerin, were examined and recorded. T2DM subjects were divided into three groups according to ba-PWV level (high, medium, or low). The data were processed and analyzed by identical methods. RESULTS Significantly higher chemerin and lower adiponectin levels were detected in the plasma of T2DM patients than in healthy controls. The plasma levels of chemerin and adiponectin were negatively correlated in T2DM patients. Moreover, chemerin and adiponectin were significantly correlated with body mass index, ankle-brachial index, insulin, and ba-PWV. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that chemerin and adiponectin were independently affecting ba-PWV. CONCLUSION Adiponectin and chemerin are potential markers for diagnosis and monitoring of early stage of atherosclerosis in older adults with T2DM. Further clinical investigations are required to confirm these markers.

Abstract
Background It has been documented that circulating chemerin is associated with inflammation, metabolic syndrome, and coronary artery disease. The present study was aimed to evaluate the prognostic value of serum chemerin in patients with chronic heart failure. Methods and Results We included 834 patients with chronic heart failure in a prospective cohort study and investigated the association between serum chemerin and clinical outcomes using multivariate Cox regression analysis. Patients with higher chemerin levels tended to be older and women and were more likely to experience hypertension, diabetes mellitus, and hyperlipemia. Cox regression analysis showed that chemerin was a significant predictor of major adverse cardiac events (hazard ratio, 1.83; 95% CI, 1.31-2.96) after adjustment for conventional risk factors. Net reclassification and integrated discrimination improvements for major adverse cardiac events were markedly improved by addition of chemerin to the reference model. In addition, chemerin was an independent predictor of all-cause mortality (hazard ratio, 1.67; 95% CI, 1.21-2.73) after multivariable adjustment. Furthermore, the Kaplan-Meier survival analysis revealed that chemerin was a prognostic indicator of major adverse cardiac events in patients with chronic heart failure and NT-proBNP (N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide) levels above and below the median. Conclusions Our study suggests that chemerin is a novel serum marker for predicting major adverse cardiac events in patients with chronic heart failure.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a global epidemic and increases mortality due to its vascular complications. Chemerin has been found to exert a major role in glucose and lipid metabolism. The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between plasma chemerin levels and microangiopathy in patients with T2DM. METHODS A total of 598 T2DM patients were classified into two groups: with and without microvascular complications. Anthropometric parameters and blood pressure were taken. The amounts of glycosylated hemoglobin, glucose, lipid profiles, creatinine, and chemerin concentrations in the blood were determined. The presence and severity of nephropathy, retinopathy, and neuropathy were also evaluated by specific tests. RESULTS Plasma levels of chemerin in diabetic subjects with microvascular complications were markedly elevated compared to those without. The number of microvascular complications increased with high plasma chemerin levels. Patients with high chemerin levels had an increased incidence of nephropathy and retinopathy. Furthermore, the chemerin plasma concentrations increased with the progression of diabetic nephropathy with highest values in macroalbuminuria groups. In contrast, no significant difference was observed in plasma chemerin levels between subjects with and without peripheral neuropathy. Pearson correlation analysis showed that plasma chemerin levels were positively related to duration of diabetes, serum creatinine, and 24-hour urine albumin excretion, even after multiple adjustments. Using logistic regression analysis, plasma chemerin concentrations were independently associated with the presence of nephropathy and retinopathy, not neuropathy. CONCLUSION This study elucidated a positive correlation between increased chemerin levels and the development of some subtypes of diabetic microangiopathy.

Abstract
Objective To investigate the influences of exercise on the levels of chemerin and its receptor chemokine-like receptor (CMKLR1) in the peripheral metabolic organs of obesity and diabetes rats, and whether the mechanism is related to peroxisome proliferator activated receptor γ (PPARγ), a key modulator of glycolipid metabolism. Methods Obesity rats induced by 8-week high fat diet (HFD) were randomly divided into obesity group (OB) and exercised obesity group (EOB) with 8 rats each group, and 40 diabetes rats established by 8-week HFD plus low dose of streptozotocin were randomly divided into 4 groups: diabetes group (DM), exercised diabetes group (EDM), exercised diabetes plus PPARγ agonist pioglitazone group (EDP), and exercised diabetes plus PPARγ antagonist GW9662 group (EDG). The rats in EOB, EDM, EDG and EDP groups participated in a 4-week moderate-intensity aerobic exercise on a treadmill with gradually increasing intensity, once a day and 6 days/week, and 30 min before each exercise EDP and EDG were administrated to the rats in EDP and EDG groups, respectively. Before and after 4-week exercise, glycolipid metabolism indexes, serum chemerin and the levels of chemerin and CMKLR1 in metabolic organs such as liver and gastrocnemius were investigated (not detecting adipose for no available perirenal adipose from DM rats). Results (1) In addition to serum chemerin, the levels of chemerin and CMKLR1 in the liver and gastrocnemius of EOB and EDM rats were declined, accompanied with the improved glycolipid metabolism. (2) The decreased chemerin/CMKLR1 in the EDM rats were reversed by PPARγ antagonist GW9662 and further strengthened by PPARγ agonist pioglitazones. Conclusions Besides serum chemerin, the levels of chemerin/CMKLR1 in the metabolic organs of obesity and diabetes rats were alleviated by exercise, which were likely to be associated with the improvement of glycolipid metabolism. Exercise-induced decrements of chemerin/CMKLR1 in the diabetes rats were mediated by PPARγ. Abstract
Perivascular adipose tissue (PVAT), the adipose tissue that surrounds most of the vasculature, has emerged as an active component of the blood vessel wall regulating vascular homeostasis and affecting the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis. Although PVAT characteristics resemble both brown and white adipose tissues, recent evidence suggests that PVAT develops from its own distinct precursors implying a closer link between PVAT and vascular system. Under physiological conditions, PVAT has potent anti-atherogenic properties mediated by its ability to secrete various biologically active factors that induce non-shivering thermogenesis and metabolize fatty acids. In contrast, under pathological conditions (mainly obesity), PVAT becomes dysfunctional, loses its thermogenic capacity and secretes pro-inflammatory adipokines that induce endothelial dysfunction and infiltration of inflammatory cells, promoting atherosclerosis development. Since PVAT plays crucial roles in regulating key steps of atherosclerosis development, it may constitute a novel therapeutic target for the prevention and treatment of atherosclerosis. Here, we review the current literature regarding the roles of PVAT in the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis.

Objective— Chemerin has been shown to be associated with inflammation and metabolic syndrome, which are in turn leading risk factors for atherosclerosis. A few clinical studies have concentrated on the role of chemerin in atherosclerosis but revealed divergent findings. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the association of plasma chemerin levels with different subclinical measurements of atherosclerosis in a population-based sample. Approach and Results— Linear and logistic regression models with different atherosclerotic parameters as subclinical outcomes were applied to analyze data from 4003 subjects of the SHIP (Study of Health in Pomerania). After adjustment for metabolic and inflammatory parameters, these models revealed no association of chemerin with carotid intima-media thickness, carotid plaque, or carotid stenosis but a significant inverse association between chemerin and ankle-brachial index. In detail, logistic regression analysis showed that a 25-ng/mL increase in chemerin was associated with a 30% higher odd (95% confidence interval, 1.20–1.41) of having an ankle-brachial index value below the 25th age- and sex-specific quartile. Conclusions— Our analyses revealed a modest inverse association between chemerin and ankle-brachial index that remained consistent after adjustment for metabolic and inflammatory parameters. The association of chemerin with carotid intima-media thickness, carotid plaque, or carotid stenosis was not significant after adjustment for the same confounder set. The investigated subclinical atherosclerotic parameters are representative for the atherosclerotic burden of different arterial regions and different disease stages. Thus, our results might suggest that the value of chemerin as a marker of higher atherosclerotic risk differs depending on the affected arterial region and disease stage.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The pathogenesis of Kawasaki disease are still not well understood. It was designed to investigate the relationship between adipokines including chemerin, omentin-1, adiponectin and acute Kawasaki disease. METHODS Enzyme-linked immunosorbent (ELISA) was used to detect serum levels of chemerin, omentin-1, adiponectin, and inflammatory cytokines IL-1β and TNF-α in 80 cases of patients diagnosed with Kawasaki disease (KD). In addition, 20 cases of children with fever and 20 cases of healthy children were selected as febrile and normal controls. RESULTS (1) Serum levels of chemerin in KD group (87.736 ± 56.310) are higher than that of both the healthy (41.746 ± 10.824) and the febrile controls (59.683 ± 18.282) (P < 0.01). (2) Circulating omentin-1 levels in Kawasaki disease group (389.773 ± 238.611) are significantly lower than that of febrile control (542.075 ± 177.995) (P < 0.01), also serum adiponectin levels in Kawasaki disease group (16.400 ± 12.243) reduced obviously compared with the febrile control group (35.074 ± 12.486). (3)Serum cytokine levels of IL-1β in Kawasaki disease group (13.656 ± 31.151) are higher than those of normal controls (2.415 ± 6.313) (P < 0.05). (4) Correlation analysis indicates that serum levels of chemerin are positively correlated with omentin-1 (r = 0.224, 95% CI 0.06-0.529, P < 0.05). Further, serum omentin-1 levels and total cholesterol (TC) are positively correlated (r = 0.358, 95% CI 0.169-0.518, P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS Circulating chemerin increased significantly in the acute stage of Kawasaki disease, while omentin-1 and adiponectin levels are decreased. These adipokines are closely associated with the early inflammation and lipid metabolism disorders of acute Kawasaki disease.

Abstract
Background Chemerin is an adipokine which plays a crucial role in atherosclerosis. Here, we examined whether circulating chemerin is enhanced in patients with advanced carotid stenosis. Methods Chemerin was quantified in 178 patients prior to carotid end arterectomy (CEA) and in age- and gender-matched controls (n = 163). Chemerin levels were related to anthropometric, clinical and metabolic characteristics of the patients. Results Chemerin levels were higher in patients compared to controls (p < 0.001). Chemerin correlated to parameters associated with inflammation such as C-reactive protein (CRP, p < 0.001), leukocyte blood count (p < 0.001) and circulating TNF-α (p = 0.004) in the patients. Chemerin levels did not differ between asymptomatic (n = 93) and symptomatic patients who experienced an ischemic event within 6 months prior to CEA (n = 85). However, in the case of high-grade carotid stenosis (≥ 90%), chemerin levels were higher in symptomatic (n = 44) compared to asymptomatic patients (n = 41, p = 0.014). Chemerin was increased in patients with (n = 50) compared to patients without (n = 128) coronary artery disease (CAD, p = 0.002). A high level of chemerin increases the risk for CAD in patients (p = 0.0013). Conclusions Circulating chemerin is increased and correlates to inflammatory parameters in patients with advanced carotid stenosis.

Abstract
Chemerin, an adipokine and inflammatory mediator, is associated with metabolic, inflammation- and immune-mediated diseases. The genetic, clinical, and biomarker correlates of circulating chemerin levels have not been completely elucidated. We analyzed the determinants and correlates of retinoic acid receptor responder 2 (RARRES2; encoding chemerin) gene variants and chemerin levels in the Taiwanese population. In total, 612 individuals were recruited. Clinical and metabolic phenotypes, 13 inflammatory markers, 5 adipokines, and 6 single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) covering the RARRES2 region were analyzed. High chemerin levels and chemerin level tertiles were positively associated with multiple metabolic phenotypes and circulating inflammatory marker and adipokine levels and negatively associated with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol and adiponectin levels and estimated glomerular filtration rates (eGFRs). Genotype and haplotype analyses showed that RARRES2 SNPs were significantly associated with chemerin, fibrinogen, interleukin 6, and lipocalin 2 levels. Stepwise logistic regression analysis showed that C-reactive protein level, leptin level, triglyceride level, eGFR, rs3735167 genotypes, sex, and soluble P-selectin level were independently associated with chemerin levels. In conclusion, pleiotropic associations were noted between RARRES2 variants, circulating chemerin levels and multiple metabolic phenotypes and inflammatory marker levels. This study provides further evidence for the potential roles of chemerin in metabolic and inflammation-related diseases.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate lead exposure and its relationship with serum levels of predictive CVD biomarkers [asymmetric dimethylarginine (ADMA), adipocyte fatty acid-binding protein (FABP4), adiponectin, and chemerin] in women living in San Luis Potosi, Mexico. A mean blood lead level (BLL) of 11.5 ± 9.00 μg/dL (mean ± standard deviation) was found after all blood samples were analyzed. Regarding serum predictive CVD biomarkers, mean serum level of 0.68 ± 0.38 μmol/L, 20.5 ± 16.5 ng/mL, 12.5 ± 3.30 μg/mL, and 255 ± 130 ng/mL were found for ADMA, FABP4, adiponectin, and chemerin, respectively. Simple significant associations (Pearson´s correlations) between BLL and ADMA (r = 0.17; p = 0.04) and FABP4 (r = 0.23; p = 0.03) were found. Furthermore, a multivariate linear regression model showed that BLL was a significant predictor of serum ADMA (β = 0.06; p = 0.001) and FABP4 (β = 1.75; p = 0.0004) concentrations after adjusting by confounders. For serum chemerin and adiponectin levels, no associations were found with BLL. In conclusion, high serum ADMA and FABP4 (predictive CVD biomarkers) levels were found in women exposed to lead. Consequently, this research can be used as a point of departure for the prevention of CVD events in populations living in sites environmentally impacted with lead.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The objective of this study was to determine the effects of a 4-week aerobic exercise plus dieting intervention on serum chemerin in obese female adolescents and its possible role in mitigating cardio-metabolic risk including glucose and lipid metabolism, central fat and inflammation. METHODS Fifty obese female adolescents were randomly divided into two groups: exercise plus dieting group (n=30) and dieting group (n=20). The participants in the exercise plus dieting group completed 4 weeks of moderate aerobic exercise combined with dieting, while the subjects in the dieting group undertook only dieting. Before and after the experiments, anthropometric index, parameters of glucose and lipid metabolism, serum chemerin and classic inflammatory indicators (C-reactive protein [CRP], tumor necrosis factor-α [TNF-α], interleukin-1β [IL-1β], IL-6, leptin and adiponectin) were measured. RESULTS Compared with the dieting group, a decrease in serum chemerin was found in the exercise plus dieting group, accompanied by significant improvements in anthropometric index, glucose and lipid metabolism and inflammatory factors. In addition, a higher serum chemerin level was found in obese adolescents with metabolic syndrome (MetS), and the disappearance of MetS induced by exercise plus dieting might be related to the decrease in chemerin. Correlation analysis showed the correlations of the decrease in chemerin with the changes in body fat, glucose and lipid metabolic index, leptin and adiponectin/leptin ratio. CONCLUSIONS This is the first report that as short a duration as 4-week aerobic exercise plus dieting decreased serum chemerin in obese female adolescents, which might be associated with the improvement in glucose and lipid metabolism, mitigation of inflammation and decrease in MetS incidence, thus lowering cardio-metabolic risk, while no health benefit resulted from slight dieting.

Abstract
The adipokines chemerin and omentin-1 have been suggested to influence cardiovascular function. The study aimed to investigate the longitudinal association between chemerin, omentin-1 concentrations and risk of incident heart failure (HF), respectively. We conducted a case-cohort study nested within the European Prospective Investigation into Cancer and Nutrition (EPIC)-Potsdam cohort (n = 27548) including a randomly drawn subsample and all incident HF cases during a mean follow-up of 8.2 ± 1.5 years. A total of 212 incident HF cases and 2168 individuals free of HF cases were included in the study. After multivariable adjustment for established cardiovascular risk factors chemerin was strongly associated with risk of HF (HR per doubling chemerin: 4.91; 95%-CI: 2.57-9.39; p < 0.0001). Omentin-1 was not significantly related to HF risk in the overall study population. However, the association between omentin-1 and HF risk was modified by prevalent coronary heart disease (CHD), showing that the shape of the association was linear in participants without prevalent CHD (HR doubling omentin-1: 2.11; 95%-CI: 1.36-3.27; p linear = 0.0009) and U-shaped in participants with pre-existing CHD (p non-linear = 0.006). Our study provides first evidence for a strong positive association between chemerin and risk of HF. The association between the adipokine omentin-1 and risk of HF may differ according to pre-existing CHD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Cardiovascular disease constitutes a major cause of death worldwide. Inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis formation, coronary artery disease progression, acute coronary thrombosis and occlusion. Chemokines are inflammatory mediators disposing several bio-functions, as leukocyte migration towards inflammatory signals and vascular injuries. The present study was designed to evaluate the potential correlation between serum levels of chemokines CXCL-10 and CXCL-12 and the degree of coronary artery occlusion. METHODS Eighty eight patient candidates for coronary angiography with coronary artery disease symptoms and potentially high risk of coronary artery occlusion were recruited. Chemokine serum levels were measured with the ELISA method and patients underwent coronary angiography. All patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) were divided into four groups according to the Gensini score. Data were presented as mean±SD. All P values <0.05 were considered significant. RESULTS Our demographic data showed that of the 88 patients, 46 were male and 42 female. The mean age of patients was 57.95±11.13. Following increased coronary artery occlusion the serum levels of chemokines were significantly increased (CXCL-10 and CXCL-12; P<0.0001 and P<0.0001, respectively). CONCLUSION In this novel study, a significant correlation between the serum levels of CXCL-10 and CXCL-12 and the severity of coronary artery occlusion was found. This could be attributed to the role of these chemokines in the processes of angiogenesis and angiostasis, a biological phenomenon that can play key role in the development of collateral circulation.

Abstract
The aims of this prospective study were to detect maternal serum chemerin level in patients with preeclampsia and investigate its association with disease severity and neonatal outcomes. Maternal serum chemerin levels were significantly elevated in severe preeclamptic women (394.72 ± 100.01 ng/ml) compared to mild preeclamptic women (322.11 ± 37.60 ng/ml) and healthy pregnant women (199.96 ± 28.05 ng/ml) (p = .001). Maternal serum chemerin levels were positively correlated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, C-reactive protein levels, homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance, proteinuria, AST, ALT, and duration of hospitalisation. Gestational week at delivery, birthweight, and APGAR scores at 1 and 5 min were negatively correlated with maternal serum chemerin level. A maternal serum chemerin level of >252.0 ng/ml indicated preeclampsia with 95.5% sensitivity and 95.7% specificity. There was a positive correlation between maternal serum chemerin level and severity of preeclampsia. Additionally, adverse neonatal outcomes were significantly associated with high maternal serum chemerin levels.

Abstract
Chemerin is a recently identified adipokine suggested to play a role in obesity and its metabolic complications. The relationship between visceral obesity and serum chemerin levels in type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is unknown and may differ from that of subjects without diabetes. Therefore, we evaluated whether serum chemerin was associated with visceral abdominal obesity in patients with T2DM. A total of 218 Korean patients with T2DM were enrolled and metabolic parameters, abdominal visceral and subcutaneous fat areas, and serum chemerin levels were measured. Serum chemerin level showed positive correlation with fasting insulin, HOMA-IR, serum triglyceride, serum creatinine, urine albumin/creatinine ratio, high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP), fibrinogen, abdominal visceral fat area, visceral to subcutaneous fat area ratio, and negatively correlation with high density lipoprotein cholesterol and creatinine clearance (CCr) after adjusting for age, gender and body mass index. Multiple linear stepwise regression analysis showed that abdominal visceral fat area (β = 0.001, P < 0.001), serum triglyceride (β = 0.001, P < 0.001), CCr (β = -0.003, P = 0.001), hsCRP (β = 0.157, P = 0.001), fibrinogen (β = 0.001, P < 0.001) and BMI (β = 0.02, P = 0.008) independently affected log transformed serum chemerin levels. Higher serum chemerin level was associated with higher level of abdominal visceral fat area, serum triglyceride, hsCRP and fibrinogen and lower level of CCr in patients with T2DM. Serum chemerin may be used as a biomarker of visceral adiposity and chemerin may play a role in inflammation, decreased renal function, and increased cardiovascular risk in T2DM.

Abstract
Currently, coronary artery disease (CAD) is considered a major ailment in humans with widespread prevalence. CAD also accounts for high mortality rates around the world that involves several known risk factors. Chemerin is a novel adipokinine that is associated with inflammation and adipogenesis. Furthermore, experimental and clinical data indicate that localized as well as circulating chemerin expression and activation are elevated in numerous metabolic and inflammatory diseases including psoriasis, obesity, type 2 diabetes, metabolic syndrome and cardiovascular disease. Chemerin is accepted as being a strong marker because the serum chemerin levels are increased in a CAD condition. However, the chimeric characteristics of chemerin have not been fully investigated. Although chemerin is known to be responsible for CAD development among other factors, authors still investigate it at the marker level. This review focuses on chemerin expression, processing, biological function and relevance to human diseases, and on the role of chemerin in the maintenance of a cardiovascular disease.

Abstract
CONTEXT Chemerin is one of the adipokines that regulate fat metabolism. High-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) may be considered as a cardiovascular risk predictor. Measuring intima-media thickness of the CCA (C-IMT) is a well-evidenced tool for the detection of early stages of atherosclerosis. We aimed here to study both serum chemerin and hs-CRP as markers of subclinical atherosclerosis in Egyptian patients with type 2 diabetes, who are angiographically free of coronary artery disease (CAD). SUBJECTS AND METHODS This cross-sectional study was conducted on 180 subjects divided into two groups: Group A included 90 type 2 diabetic patients without CAD and group B including 90 nondiabetic control subjects. All study subjects were having normal coronary angiography. Serum chemerin, homeostasis model assessment for insulin resistance (HOMA-IR), glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profile, hs-CRP as well as C-IMT were assessed in all study subjects. RESULTS There was a statistically significant difference between the 2 groups regarding serum chemerin level, HOMA-IR, hs-CRP and C-IMT; being higher in the diabetic patients than in the control group (p = 0.006, 0.024, 0.040 and <0.001, respectively). There was positive correlation between serum chemerin level and waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), HOMA-IR, hs-CRP and C-IMT. Carotid intima-media thickness was positively correlated with patients' WHR, blood pressure, HbA1c, diabetes duration as well as hs-CRP, and negatively correlated with ankle-brachial index (ABI). Linear regression analysis showed that HbA1c, serum chemerin and hs-CRP were independently affecting C-IMT. Serum hs-CRP was positively correlated with HbA1c and HOMA-IR (p = 0.006 and 0.032, respectively), and negatively correlated with HDL-cholesterol level (p = 0.018). CONCLUSION Both serum chemerin and hs-CRP could be considered as markers of subclinical atherosclerosis, and hence, may be utilized for the early detection of macrovascular disease, in Egyptian patients with type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a metabolic stress-induced liver disease that is closely related not only to genetic susceptibility but also to insulin resistance and highly linked with metabolic syndrome. In recent years, the prevalence of NAFLD has increased rapidly, paralleling the epidemic of type 2 diabetes mellitus and obesity leading to cardiovascular disease. It has been demonstrated that NAFLD is highly associated with atherosclerosis. With recently gained knowledge, it appears that NAFLD may induce insulin resistance, dyslipidemia, oxidative stress, inflammation, and fluctuation of adipokines associated with atherosclerosis. In this review, we aimed to summarize recent discoveries related to both NAFLD and atherosclerosis, and to identify possible mechanisms linking them.

Abstract
Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous, multifactorial, chronic disease characterized by hyperglycemia owing to insulin insufficiency and insulin resistance (IR). Recent epidemiological studies showed that the diabetes epidemic affects 382 million people worldwide in 2013, and this figure is expected to be 600 million people by 2035. Diabetes is associated with microvascular and macrovascular complications resulting in accelerated endothelial dysfunction (ED), atherosclerosis, and cardiovascular disease (CVD). Unfortunately, the complex pathophysiology of diabetic cardiovascular damage is not fully understood. Therefore, there is a clear need to better understand the molecular pathophysiology of ED in diabetes, and consequently, better treatment options and novel efficacious therapies could be identified. In the light of recent extensive research, we re-investigate the association between diabetes-associated metabolic disturbances (IR, subclinical inflammation, dyslipidemia, hyperglycemia, dysregulated production of adipokines, defective incretin and gut hormones production/action, and oxidative stress) and ED, focusing on oxidative stress and endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). In addition, we re-emphasize that oxidative stress is the final common pathway that transduces signals from other conditions-either directly or indirectly-leading to ED and CVD.

Abstract
There is growing evidence that chemerin, a novel adipokine elevated in obesity and metabolic syndromes, plays a crucial role in advanced atherosclerosis. This study aimed to determine the chemerin levels in diabetes and evaluate the effects of increased chemerin on early atherosclerosis.A total of 245 newly diagnosed diabetic patients and 148 age-matched, healthy, normal glucose tolerant (NGT) controls were enrolled. Anthropometric measurements and plasma parameters were examined, including body mass index (BMI), waist circumference, blood pressure, glucose, lipid profiles, inflammation markers, adipokines, and cell adhesion molecules. Vascular healthy was measured with brachial flow-mediated dilatation (FMD) and carotid intima-media thickness (IMT).Compared with NGT controls, plasma chemerin levels were higher in diabetic patients (P < 0.01) and higher chemerin level was an independent risk factor of occurrence of diabetes even after metabolic profiles were adjusted (odds ratio [OR] = 1.352, 95% CI: 1.181-1.543, P < 0.01). In patients with type 2 diabetes, chemerin was positively associated with intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), E-selectin, but not vascular adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1) and P-selectin. We also explored that plasma chemerin level was negatively associated with brachial FMD and positively with carotid IMT. Chemerin also retained a strong association with ICAM-1, FMD, and IMT even after adjusted for age, sex, and other risk factors (ICAM-1: r = 0.150, P = 0.024; FMD: r = -0.126, P = 0.001; IMT: r = 0.325, P < 0.001). By multiple linear regression analysis, plasma chemerin levels were related to ICAM-1 even after adjustments for conventional cardiovascular risk factors (β = 0.192, P = 0.017). Moreover, logistic regression analysis showed that high chemerin level was an independent predictive variable for impaired endothelial function (OR = 1.066, 95% CI: 1.012-1.142, P = 0.048) and enhanced carotid vessel thickness (OR = 1.068, 95% CI: 1.021-1.148, P = 0.035) in diabetic patients.In summary, chemerin levels are independently associated with endothelial activation and early atherosclerosis in newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to examine the association between serum level of chemerin with AIS and carotid artery atherosclerosis, and to investigate the level of chemerin as a potential novel cerebrovascular risk factor. MATERIAL AND METHODS We compared the serum chemerin levels and cerebrovascular parameters between 70 AIS patients and 70 non-AIS subjects in a Chinese population. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to measure the levels of serum chemerin. The state of carotid artery plaques in the AIS group was detected by color Doppler ultrasound. We used SPSS software for statistical analysis. RESULTS Compared with the non-AIS group, serum level of chemerin in the AIS group increased significantly (p<0.01). Multivariable logistic regression suggested that serum chemerin level, neutrophil count, and BMI were independent risk factors for AIS (p<0.05). Compared with the non-unstable plaque group, there were significant differences from the unstable plaque group in serum chemerin level (p<0.01). Multivariable logistic regression analysis revealed that the LDL-C, FIB, and serum chemerin levels were independent risk factors for carotid artery plaque instability (P<0.05). The levels of serum chemerin in the subjects with no carotid artery plaque were significantly lower than in those with carotid artery plaques of 2 and ≥3 (P=0.013; P=0.01). CONCLUSIONS The results of this study suggest that the serum chemerin level may be an independent risk factor for AIS and carotid artery plaque instability in Chinese populations.

Abstract
The novel adipokine chemerin, encoded by the RARRES2 gene, has been suggested to be linked to insulin resistance and to the metabolic syndrome (MetS). However, no well-defined cardiovascular profile has been reported and the association with coronary artery disease (CAD) is a matter of debate. Because there is a relation between renal dysfunction and CAD, we analyzed plasma chemerin levels and the estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) in 495 patients undergoing coronary angiography for the evaluation of established or suspected stable CAD. Chemerin levels were higher in patients with Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM, n=111) and the metabolic syndrome (MetS, n=147) than in subjects without T2DM (191.5±72.9 vs. 169.7±64.7ng/ml, p=0.001) or the MetS (201.2±71.0 vs. 163,1ng/ml, p<0.001), but did not differ significantly between patients with significant CAD (n=247) and those without significant CAD (177.1±67.0 vs. 171.7±67.2ng/ml, p=0.193). Analysis of covariance using age, sex, and BMI as covariates showed that chemerin was significantly and independently associated with eGFR (F=49.6, p<0.001). After an 8-year follow-up period, patients with high chemerin levels were more often affected by cardiovascular events (HR=1.72 [95% CI 1.19-2.47], p=0.004), even after appropriate adjustment for age, gender, BMI, as well as eGFR (adjusted HR 1.51 [95% CI 1.03-2.23], p=0.037). Given the cardiometabolic role of chemerin, we also applied a Cardio-Metabo Chip analysis and revealed a genome-wide significant association with SNPs (rs55709438, rs2444030, and rs3098423) located at chromosomal region 15q15-23, which were associated with metabolic traits and eGFR. This study for the first time demonstrates that high chemerin concentrations are significantly associated with renal impairment and predictive of cardiovascular events and that 15q15-23 might have an impact on chemerin levels beyond common genetic variations in RARRES2.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent evidence demonstrated that the circulating concentrations of adipokine are related to the presence of heart failure secondary to ischemic heart disease and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). However, the plasma concentrations of chemerin in patients with DCM have yet to be investigated. METHODS The present study enrolled 109 DCM patients with typical symptoms of heart failure and 60 healthy controls and measured plasma concentrations of chemerin, IL-6 and TNF-α using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were measured using a GE ViVid E7 ultrasonography machine. RESULTS Plasma chemerin, IL-6 and TNF-α concentrations were significantly higher in DCM patients compared to the control group. A correlation analysis revealed that plasma chemerin concentrations were positively correlated with the concentrations of IL-6 (R=0.270, P=0.004), TNF-α (R=0.302, P=0.001), C-reactive protein (CRP) (R=0.256, P=0.004), N-terminal pro-brain natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) (R=0.386, P=0.000), and LVEDD (R=0.212, P=0.027) but negatively correlated with LVEF (R=-0.543, P=0.000). Furthermore, chemerin (OR 1.102, 95% CI 1.052 to 1.153; p=0.000) was independently associated with the presence of DCM before NT-proBNP was added in the multivariable regression model. CONCLUSIONS The results indicate that chemerin is a novel biomarker of DCM.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Insulin resistance and subclinical inflammation are characteristics in the development of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). The adipokine chemerin has been associated with both factors. The aim of this study was to analyse whether chemerin predicts T2DM. DESIGN Blood samples of 440 participants of the Metabolic-Syndrome Berlin-Potsdam (MesyBepo) follow-up study without diabetes at baseline were available for chemerin measurement. Mean follow-up of participants was 5·3 years. Glucose metabolism was analysed using oral glucose tolerance test including insulin measurements. Chemerin was measured using a commercially available ELISA. RESULTS Thirty-five individuals developed T2DM during follow-up. Chemerin predicted incident T2DM (Chemerin 1. Tertile: reference, 2. Tertile: OR 2·33 [0·68-7·95]; Chemerin 3. Tertile: OR 3·42 [1·01-11·58] after adjustment for age, sex, BMI, follow-up time, HbA1c, HOMA-IR and WHR). In a secondary analysis, chemerin also predicted worsening of fasting glucose and HbA1c (adjusted for age, sex, BMI, time of follow-up, WHR, HDL cholesterol and triglycerides). CONCLUSIONS Our data suggest that chemerin is a weak predictor of T2DM.

Abstract
The novel adipokine chemerin has been related to insulin-resistant states such as obesity and non alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). However, its association with insulin resistance and beta cell function remains controversial. The main objective was to examine whether serum chemerin levels associate with insulin sensitivity and beta cell function independently of body mass index (BMI), by studying consecutive outpatients of the hepatology clinics of a European university hospital. Individuals (n=196) with NAFLD were stratified into persons with normal glucose tolerance (NGT; n=110), impaired glucose tolerance (IGT; n=51) and type 2 diabetes (T2D; n=35) and the association between serum chemerin and measures of insulin sensitivity and beta cell function as assessed during fasting and during oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was measured. Our results showed that serum chemerin positively associated with BMI (P=0.0007) and C peptide during OGTT (P<0.004), but not with circulating glucose, insulin, lipids or liver enzymes (all P>0.18). No BMI independent relationships of chemerin with fasting and OGTT derived measures of insulin sensitivity were found (P>0.5). Chemerin associated positively with fasting beta cell function as well as the OGTT derived insulinogenic index IGI_cp and the adaptation index after adjustment for age, sex and BMI (P=0.002-0.007), and inversely with the insulin/C peptide ratio (P=0.007). Serum chemerin neither related to the insulinogenic index IGI_ins nor the disposition index. In conclusion, circulating chemerin is likely linked to enhanced beta cell function but not to insulin sensitivity in patients with NAFLD.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to determine chemerin levels in preeclampsia and to assess the effects of this anti-inflammatory factor on endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), nuclear factor (NF)-κB, and vascular cell adhesion molecule (VCAM) expression in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVECs). Serum chemerin and eNOS levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays, while chemerin mRNA and protein levels were measured by fluorescent quantitative polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting, respectively. Nitric oxide (NO) concentrations were determined with a colorimetric method. Akt and eNOS phosphorylation were assessed by Western blotting. We also tested the effects of the phosphoinositide 3-kinase inhibitor LY294002 and the eNOS inhibitor L-NAME. NF-κB p65 and VCAM-1 phosphorylation were assessed by Western blotting to investigate the role of chemerin in tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α-induced HUVEC injury. Serum chemerin levels were increased in preeclampsia, while eNOS was decreased. Chemerin mRNA and protein were both increased in placentae from patients with preeclampsia. Furthermore, chemerin serum level positively correlated with blood pressure, body mass index, and serum insulin and was negatively correlated with serum eNOS. Chemerin dose-dependently increased NO concentrations in supernatants. Chemerin can increase eNOS and Akt levels in HUVECs, and these results could be partly blocked by LY294002 and L-NAME. Chemerin significantly decreased TNF-α-induced NF-κB and VCAM-1 in HUVECs, and these changes were partly inhibited by LY294002 and L-NAME. Chemerin may play a protective role by regulating NO signaling. Future studies should assess the role of chemerin in preeclampsia and other vascular diseases.

Abstract
Chemerin is a novel adipokine linked to inflammation. The cross-sectional studies have reported that maternal chemerin serum concentrations are significantly increased in pre-eclampsia. However, limited data are available regarding the cause-effect relationship between chemerin and pre-eclampsia. The aim of this prospective observational study was to evaluate predictive significance of the first-trimester maternal serum chemerin levels for pre-eclampsia and to further confirm the hypothesis that chemerin is an important causative factor in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia. 518 pregnancy women were recruited. The first-trimester maternal serum chemerin levels were determined using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The first-trimester maternal serum chemerin levels were statistically significantly elevated in women with pre-eclampsia compared with those without pre-eclampsia and in severe pre-eclampsia women compared with mild pre-eclampsia women. Serum chemerin levels remained positively associated with plasma C-reactive protein levels using a linear regression model. A logistic-regression analysis demonstrated that body mass index and serum chemerin levels appeared to be the independent predictors of pre-eclampsia. A receiver–operating characteristic curve analysis identified that serum chemerin levels predicted pre-eclampsia with high predictive value. The predictive value of the chemerin concentrations was similar to that of body mass index. Chemerin improved the predictive value of body mass index statistically significantly. Thus, our results suggest that high serum chemerin levels are associated with inflammation and pre-eclampsia independently, as well as chemerin may play a role as predictive biomarker for pre-eclampsia and be an important causative factor in the pathogenesis of pre-eclampsia.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Recent evidence demonstrated that the circulating adipokines were associated with the onset of acute coronary syndrome (ACS) including unstable angina pectoris (UAP) and acute myocardial infarction (AMI). As a novel adipokine, chemerin has been related to atherosclerosis and the presence of coronary artery disease. However, the plasma levels of chemerin in patients with ACS have yet to be investigated. METHODS Plasma levels of chemerin and adiponectin were measured by an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in 60 patients with stable angina pectoris (SAP), 60 patients with UAP, 60 patients with AMI and 40 control patients. Left ventricular end-diastolic diameter (LVEDD) and left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) were measured using a GE ViVid E7 ultrasonography machine, and the severity of coronary stenosis in patients was estimated with a Gensini coronary score following coronary angiography. RESULTS Plasma chemerin levels were significantly higher in ACS patients than in the control and SAP groups, while plasma adiponectin levels were significantly lower in ACS patients than the control group. A correlation analysis revealed that plasma chemerin levels were positively correlated with the levels of C-reactive protein (CRP) (r = 0.29, P < 0.01) and LVEDD (r = 0.27, P < 0.01) but negatively correlated with LVEF (r = -0.45, P < 0.01) and that plasma adiponectin levels were positively correlated with LVEF (r = 0.53, P < 0.01) but negatively correlated with CRP (r = -0.33, P < 0.01) and LVEDD (r = -0.30, P < 0.01). Although significant correlations between chemerin, adiponectin and BMI or the Gensini coronary score were found in patients with SAP, neither chemerin nor adiponectin was correlated with BMI and the Gensini coronary score in patients with ACS. Furthermore, both chemerin (OR 1.103, 95% CI 1.065 to 1.142; P = 0.001) and adiponectin (OR 0.871, 95% CI 0.776 to 0.970; P = 0.018) were independently associated with the presence of ACS. CONCLUSIONS Chemerin is a novel biomarker of acute coronary syndrome but not of stable angina pectoris.
