Sources, environmental fate, and impacts of microplastic contamination in agricultural soils: A comprehensive review

The pervasive presence of microplastics has emerged as a pressing global environmental concern, posing threats to food security and human health upon infiltrating agricultural soils. These microplastics primarily originate from agricultural activities, including fertilizer inputs, compost-based soil remediation, irrigation, and atmospheric deposition. Their remarkable durability and resistance to biodegradation contribute to their persistent presence in the environment. Microplastics within agricultural soils have prompted concerns regarding their potential impacts on agricultural practices. Functioning as significant pollutants and carriers of microcontaminants within agricultural ecosystems, microplastics and their accompanying contaminants represent ongoing challenges. Within these soil ecosystems, the fate and transportation of microplastics can detrimentally affect plant growth, microbial communities, and, subsequently, human health via the food chain. Specifically, microplastics interact with soil factors, impacting soil health and functionality. Their high adsorption capacity for hazardous microcontaminants exacerbates soil contamination, leading to increased adverse effects on organisms and human health. Due to their tiny size, microplastic debris is easily ingested by soil organisms and can transfer through the food chain, causing physiological and/or mechanical damage. Additionally, microplastics can affect plant growth and have the potential to accumulate and be transported within plants. Efforts to mitigate these impacts are crucial to safeguarding agricultural sustainability and environmental health. Future research should delve into the long-term impacts of environmental aging processes on microplastic debris within agricultural soil ecosystems from various sources, primarily focusing on food security and human beings.

Impact of microplastics on microbial community structure in the Qiantang river: A potential source of N2O emissions

This study aimed to investigate the spatial distribution of microplastics (MPs) and the features of the bacterial community in the Qiantang River urban river. Surface water samples from the Qiantang River were analyzed for this purpose. The results of the 16S high-throughput sequencing indicated that the microbial community diversity of MPs was significantly lower than in natural water but higher than in natural substrates. The biofilm of MPs was mainly composed of Enterobacteriaceae (28.00%), Bacillaceae (16.25%), and Phormidiaceae (6.75%). The biodiversity on MPs, natural water, and natural substrates varied significantly and was influenced by seasonal factors. In addition, the presence of MPs hindered the denitrification process in the aquatic environment and intensified N2O emission when the nitrate concentration was higher than normal. In particular, polyethylene terephthalate (PET) exhibited a 12% residue of NO3--N and a 4.2% accumulation of N2O after a duration of 48 h. Further findings on gene abundance and cell viability provided further confirmation that PET had a considerable impact on reducing the expression of nirS (by 0.34-fold) and nosZ (by 0.53-fold), hence impeding the generation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) (by 0.79-fold). Notably, all MPs demonstrated higher the nirK gene abundances than the nirS gene, which could account for the significant accumulation of N2O. The results suggest that MPs can serve as a novel carrier substrate for microbial communities and as a potential promoter of N2O emission in aquatic environments.

Abundance, characteristics and ecological risk assessment of microplastics in ship ballast water in ports around Liaodong Peninsula, China

The development of the shipping industry has led to a large volume of ballast water discharge annually. This accelerates pollutants' transfer and dispersion, such as microplastics. Currently, empirical data on microplastics in ballast water are rarely available. This study innovatively investigated the abundance, morphological characteristics (particle size, shape, and color), and polymer composition of microplastics in ballast water from ports surrounding the Liaodong Peninsula. The results revealed that the average abundance of microplastics in 13 ships' ballast water was 6071.30 ± 1313.85 items/m3. Notably, the small microplastics (0.06-2.50 mm) were most abundant, accounting for 94.52 % of the total microplastics. Transparent, fiber, and polyethylene glycol terephthalate were the most prevalent color, shape, and polymer composition of microplastics detected in the ballast water. The risk assessment indicated that these microplastics present ecological risks to organisms. These findings suggest that ship ballast water is the potential "hotspot" for marine microplastics transport.

Seasonal occurrence and distribution of microplastics in four different benthic suspension feeders from an Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) facility: A bioremediation perspective

Microplastics (MPs) are dangerous and ubiquitous in the environment. The urgency to contrast plastic pollution is prompting the scientific community to offer new proposals. Recently, bioremediation using filter feeders is gaining consent as a nature-based solution. Herein four filter feeders (Mytilus galloprovincialis Lamarck, 1819, Sabella spallanzanii Gmelin, 1791, Phallusia mammillata Cuvier, 1815, Paraleucilla magna Klautau, Monteiro & Borojevic, 2004), studied in a previous laboratory experiment as MPs bioremediators, are evaluated in field conditions within 1-year. These organisms are part of an established fouling community growing on eco-friendly ropes in an Integrated Multi-Trophic Aquaculture (IMTA) in the Mar Grande of Taranto. After digesting the animal tissue, the MPs content was quantified by optical microscopy and spectroscopically characterized in the four seasons: highest values were measured in Autumn and lowest in Spring. M. galloprovincialis and P. mammillata were the most contaminated, but S. spallanzanii removed more MPs, due to its high density on the ropes. The whole community removed 3.15 × 107 MPs/season, with the amount of microfibers corresponding to a bottle cap/season.

Microplastics in marine ecosystems: A comprehensive review of biological and ecological implications and its mitigation approach using nanotechnology for the sustainable environment

Microplastic contamination has rapidly become a serious environmental issue, threatening marine ecosystems and human health. This review aims to not only understand the distribution, impacts, and transfer mechanisms of microplastic contamination but also to explore potential solutions for mitigating its widespread impact. This review encompasses the categorisation, origins, and worldwide prevalence of microplastics and methodically navigates the complicated structure of microplastics. Understanding the sources of minute plastic particles infiltrating water bodies worldwide is critical for successful removal. The presence and accumulation of microplastics has far reaching negative impacts on various marine creatures, eventually extending its implications to human health. Microplastics are known to affect the metabolic activities and the survival of microbial communities, phytoplankton, zooplankton, and fauna present in marine environments. Moreover, these microplastics cause developmental abnormalities, endocrine disruption, and several metabolic disorders in humans. These microplastics accumulates in aquatic environments through trophic transfer mechanisms and biomagnification, thereby disrupting the delicate balance of these ecosystems. The review also addresses the tactics for minimising the widespread impact of microplastics by suggesting practical alternatives. These include increasing public awareness, fostering international cooperation, developing novel cleanup solutions, and encouraging the use of environment-friendly materials. In conclusion, this review examines the sources and prevalence of microplastic contamination in marine environment, its impacts on living organisms and ecosystems. It also proposes various sustainable strategies to mitigate the problem of microplastics pollution. Also, the current challenges associated with the mitigation of these pollutants have been discussed and addressing these challenges require immediate and collective action for restoring the balance in marine ecosystems.

Assessing meso-, micro-, and nanoplastic pollution in Los Angeles County estuaries

Estuaries can behave as plastic pollution hotspots, although the dynamics of accumulation in these unique habitats are not understood. We quantified the current levels of meso-, micro-, and nanoplastic pollution in four Los Angeles County estuaries for the first time, as a function of distance from the water outlet and local population density. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and microscope imaging revealed the presence of six types of plastic; polyethylene or polypropylene dominated the meso- and microplastic, and nanoplastics were identified as mainly polyolefin fibers. The distribution was heterogeneous throughout, although the sand between the river mouth and ocean generally contained more plastic than inland control samples. Population density did not appear to affect the abundance of plastic estuarine pollution. Other factors, such as waste treatment effluent, recreation, and river geography, may contribute to plastic deposition. A positive correlation between meso- and microplastic abundance provides insight into such mechanisms for accumulation.

Mitigated toxicity of polystyrene nanoplastics in combination exposure with copper ions by transformation into copper (I) oxide: Inhibits the oxidative potential of nanoplastics

The combined impact of trace metals and polystyrene (PS) microplastics is extremely concerning for human health because PS microplastics can serve as a vehicle for other contaminants. Herein, we investigated the combined effect of copper ions (Cu2+) on the toxicity of PS nanoplastics in vivo and in vitro. The pristine PS (PPS) and ultraviolet irradiated oxidized PS (OPS) nanoplastics with 50 nm-size were conjugated with Cu2+ (13-27 mg/g) for 4 days to get four types of samples: PPS, OPS, PPS/Cu, and OPS/Cu. The comparative toxic potentials of test samples were evaluated using a mouse pharyngeal aspiration model and relevant human cell lines (A549 and differentiated THP-1 cells). The results showed an antagonistic effect in vivo and in vitro by the presence of Cu ions: PPS > PPS/Cu; OPS > OPS/Cu. Furthermore, the OPS produced significantly increased toxic potentials compared to the corresponding PPS: OPS > PPS; OPS/Cu > PPS/Cu. The antagonistic effect of Cu2+ on the toxicity of PS was due to the transformation of Cu2+ and balanced the surface charge of the nanoplastics, which inhibited the oxidative potential of corresponding nanoplastics. These antagonistic effects may provide a better understanding of the combined effects of metals on the intrinsic toxic potential of microplastics under natural conditions.

Organ-specific bioaccumulation of microplastics in market fish of Dhaka and size-dependent impacts of PVC microplastics on growth of Anabustestudineus

Microplastics (MPs), a growing environmental concern with potential ecotoxicological risks, are ubiquitous in aquatic environment. This study investigated the organ-specific distribution and variation of MPs in commercially caught fishes (7 species, 140 individuals) collected from Dhaka's two main fish distribution hubs (Uttara and Jatrabari). Additionally, the impact of different-sized MPs on fish growth (Anabas testudineus) was examined in a control experiment. Results revealed that kidneys of market fish bioaccumulated the highest concentration of MPs (average, 59.1 MPs/g), followed by liver (24.6 MPs/g) and intestine (18.6 MPs/g). On average, fish from Uttara had a higher MPs concentration (36 MPs/g) compared to Jatrabari (25 MPs/g). Among fish species, Glossogobius giuris showed the highest MPs bioaccumulation due to its feeding habits and morphology. Fiber-shaped MPs were most prevalent in all fishes (79-93%) except Glossogobius giuris (fragments, 51%). Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) analysis identified 19 different polymer types, with high density polyethylene (HDPE), ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) and polyamide (PA) being commonly found in all organs. The experimental study confirmed that large-sized PVC MPs (1.18 mm-300 μm) had a greater negative impact on fish growth (length) and caused more physical deformities (particularly intestinal injuries) compared to small-sized PVC MPs (150 μm-75 μm). Moreover, fish exposed to larger diameter MPs experienced highest physical weight and depth loss among exposed groups. Large-sized PVC MPs bioaccumulated highest in fish compared to small-sized PVC MPs. Similar to market fish, kidney in the experimental fish had the highest MPs bioaccumulation (6.5 MPs/g), followed by liver (5.2 MPs/g) and intestine (4.8 MPs/g), with a dominance of fibers despite the presence of high concentration of fragments in the food source. Statistical analysis also supported a clear correlation between increasing MPs size and adverse effects on fish growth and health. Urgent action is needed to curb microplastic pollution and protect ecosystems and human health.

Detection of microplastics in human tissues and organs: A scoping review

Background

Research on microplastics has largely focused on the environment and marine organisms until recently. A growing body of evidence has detected microplastics in human organs and tissues, with their exact entry routes being unclear and their potential health effects remain unknown. This scoping review aimed to characterise microplastics in human tissues and organs, examine their entry routes and addressing gaps in research analytical techniques.

Methods

Eligibility criteria included English language full text articles, in-vivo human studies only, and searching the databases using pre-defined terms. We based our analysis and reporting on the PRISMA guideline and examined the quality of evidence using the risk of bias assessment tool.

Results

Of 3616 articles screened, 223 evaluated and 26 were eventually included in this review. Nine were high risk for bias, three were unclear risk and the rest low risk for bias. Microplastics were detected in 8/12 human organ systems including cardiovascular, digestive, endocrine, integumentary, lymphatic, respiratory, reproductive and urinary. Microplastics were also observed in other human biological samples such as breastmilk, meconium, semen, stool, sputum and urine. Microplastics can be characterised based on shape, colours, and polymer type. Potential entry routes into human included atmospheric inhalation and ingestion through food and water. The extraction techniques for analysis of microplastics in human tissues vary significantly, each offering distinct advantages and limitations.

Conclusions

Microplastics are commonly detected in human tissues and organs, with distinct characteristics and entry routes, and variable analytical techniques exist.

Is it time to revise the fighting strategy toward type 2 diabetes? Sex and pollution as new risk factors

Diabetes mellitus, a metabolic condition affecting around 537 million individuals worldwide, poses significant challenges, particularly among the elderly population. The etiopathogenesis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) depends on a combination of the effects driven by advancing age, genetic background, and lifestyle habits, e.g. overnutrition. These factors influence the development of T2D differently in men and women, with an obvious sexual dimorphism possibly underlying the diverse clinical features of the disease in different sexes. More recently, environmental pollution, estimated to cause 9 million deaths every year, is emerging as a novel risk factor for the development of T2D. Indeed, exposure to atmospheric pollutants such as PM2.5, O3, NO2, and Persistent Organic Pollutants (POP)s, along with their combination and bioaccumulation, is associated with the development of T2D and obesity, with a 15 % excess risk in case of exposure to very high levels of PM2.5. Similar data are available for plasticizer molecules, e.g. bisphenol A and phthalates, emerging endocrine-disrupting chemicals. Even though causality is still debated at this stage, preclinical evidence sustains the ability of multiple pollutants to affect pancreatic function, promote insulin resistance, and alter lipid metabolism, possibly contributing to T2D onset and progression. In addition, preclinical findings suggest a possible role also for plastic itself in the development of T2D. Indeed, pioneeristic studies evidenced that micro- or nanoplastics (MNP)s, particles in the micro- or nano- range, promote cellular damage, senescence, inflammation, and metabolic disturbances, leading to insulin resistance and impaired glucose metabolism in animal and/or in vitro models. Here we synthesize recent knowledge relative to the association between air-related or plastic-derived pollutants and the incidence of T2D, discussing also the possible mechanistic links suggested by the available literature. We then anticipate the need for future studies in the field of candidate therapeutic strategies limiting pollution-induced damage in preclinical models, such as SGLT-2 inhibitors. We finally postulate that future guidelines for T2D prevention should consider pollution and sex an additional risk factors to limit the diabetes pandemic.

Bacterial community in the buckwheat rhizosphere responds more sensitively to single microplastics in lead-contaminated soil compared to the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi community

Soil pollution by microplastics (MPs), defined as plastic particles <5 mm, and heavy metals is a significant environmental issue. However, studies on the co-contamination effects of MPs and heavy metals on buckwheat rhizosphere microorganisms, especially on the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) community, are limited. We introduced low (0.01 g kg-1) and high doses of lead (Pb) (2 g kg-1) along with polyethylene (PE) and polylactic acid (PLA) MPs, both individually and in combination, into soil and assessed soil properties, buckwheat growth, and rhizosphere bacterial and AMF communities in a 40-day pot experiment. Notable alterations were observed in soil properties such as pH, alkaline hydrolyzable nitrogen (AN), and the available Pb (APb). High-dose Pb combined with PLA-MPs hindered buckwheat growth. Compared to the control, bacterial Chao1 richness and Shannon diversity were lower in the high dose Pb with PLA treatment, and differentially abundant bacteria were mainly detected in the high Pb dose treatments. Variations in bacterial communities correlated with APb, pH and AN. Overall, the AMF community composition remained largely consistent across all treatments. This phenomenon may be due to fungi having lower nutritional demands than bacteria. Stochastic processes played a relatively important role in the assembly of both bacterial and AMF communities. In summary, MPs appeared to amplify both the positive and negative effects of high Pb doses on the buckwheat rhizosphere bacteria.

Microplastic-Free Microcapsules Using Supramolecular Self-Assembly of Bis-Urea Molecules at an Emulsion Interface

Encapsulation technology is well established for entrapping active ingredients within an outer shell for their protection and controlled release. However, many solutions employed industrially use nondegradable cross-linked synthetic polymers for shell formation. To curb rising microplastic pollution, regulatory policies are forcing industries to substitute the use of such intentionally added microplastics with environmentally friendly alternatives. This work demonstrates a one-pot process to make microplastic-free microcapsules using supramolecular self-assembly of bis-ureas. Molecular bis-urea species generated in-situ spontaneously self-assemble at the interface of an oil-in-water emulsion via hydrogen bonding to form a shell held together by noncovalent bonds. In addition, Laponite nanodiscs were introduced in the formulation to restrict aggregation observed during the self-assembly and to reduce the porosity of the shell, leading to well-dispersed microcapsules (mean Sauter diameter d [3,2] ∼ 5 μm) with high encapsulation efficiency (∼99%). Accelerated release tests revealed an increase in characteristic release time of the active by more than an order of magnitude after encapsulation. The mechanical strength parameters of these capsules were comparable to some of the commercial, nondegradable melamine-formaldehyde microcapsules. With mild operating conditions in an aqueous environment, this technology has real potential to offer an industrially viable method for producing microplastic-free microcapsules.

Vertical distribution of microplastics in sediment columns along the coastline of China

At present, there has been relatively less coverage of microplastics (MPs) pollution in sediment columns, especially across a large geographical span. This study collected sediment columns across 11 provinces along the coastline of China for MPs pollution investigation. The study found higher MPs diversity (Simpson diversity index) in sediment columns than in surface sediments, mostly comprising fiber MPs with dominant transparent and blue colors. Lower MPs pollution was noted in mangrove reserves, while estuarine and coastal areas showed higher pollution levels. Spearman correlation analysis shows that vertical of MPs abundance significantly decreased with depth at 6 of 11 sites. Large-sized MPs with diverse colors in deeper sediments (>40 cm) suggests that burial processes may render MPs more resistant to degradation. Our research highlights varied MPs distribution in coastal sediment, aiding future marine MPs pollution prediction and assessment.

Environmental Health Risk of Microplastics Due to Consumption of Fish and Shellfish in the Coastal Area

Background

The increasing accumulation of plastic waste is the most serious threat to the marine ecosystem. People who still have the habit of disposing of solid waste, especially plastic-type waste, in the marine environment have led to the discovery of microplastic content in various marine biota such as fish and shellfish. We aimed to assess the environmental health risks of microplastics due to consumption of marine life in the coastal area.

Methods

We used an observational method with the Environmental Health Risk Assessment (EHRA) design to analyze the health risks of humans consuming fish and shellfish containing microplastics. This research was conducted in the coastal area of Takalar Regency, Indonesia in 2022. The samples used consisted of human (n = 30) and marine biota (fish, n=20; shellfish, n=20) samples. The data were obtained from observations, physical measurements of biota, laboratory tests, polymer type identification by Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy, and microscopy.

Results

The average concentration of microplastics containing styrene compounds in shellfish was 2.01 mg/kg. The abundance of MPs in the fish and shellfish samples was 0.01 particles/g or 10 particles/kg in fish and 7 particles/individual in shellfish. The MPs were found in line, fragment, film, and pellet forms, with different size and color variations. The average MPs exposure risk level (RQ value) for both fish and shellfish was 0.02.

Conclusion

All samples had RQ values < 1, which means that the microplastic-containing tofu shellfish were still safe for consumption by people living in the Takalar coastal area.

Beyond the cradle - Amidst microplastics and the ongoing peril during pregnancy and neonatal stages: A holistic review

Advancements in research concerning the occurrence of microplastics (MPs) in human blood, sputum, urine, and breast milk samples have piqued the interest of the scientific community, prompting further investigation. MPs present in the placenta, amniotic fluid, and meconium raise concerns about interference with embryonic development, leading to preeclampsia, stillbirth, preterm birth, and spontaneous abortion. The challenges posed by MPs extend beyond pregnancy, affecting the digestive, reproductive, circulatory, immune, and central nervous systems. This has spurred scientists to examine the origins of MPs in distinct environmental layers, including air, water, and soil. These risks continue after birth, as neonates are continuously exposed to MPs through everyday items such as breast milk, cow milk and infant milk powder, as well as plastic-based products like feeding bottles and breast milk storage bags. It is the need of the hour to strike a balance amidst lifestyle changes, alternative choices to traditional plastic products, raising awareness about plastic-related health risks, and fostering collaboration between the scientific community and policymakers. This review aims to provide fresh insights into potential sources of MP pollution, with a specific focus on pregnancy and neonates. It is the first compilation of its kind so far that includes critical studies on recently reported discoveries.

Synthesis and preliminary evaluation of Ag-TiO2/CNT hybrid nanocomposite for the degradation of polystyrene microplastics under solar irradiation

Currently, microplastics (MPs) are considered as emerging aqueous pollutants. However, existing methods for the separation and treatment of MPs from an aquatic environment are limited by their low efficiency. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are novel techniques that employ photo-induced electron/hole pairs to generate active radicals for MP mineralization. Thus, in this study, a photocatalyst, i.e., Ag+ ion-doped TiO2, heterojunctioned with carbon nanotubes (CNT), was synthesized to study the degradation of typical MPs such as polystyrene (PS) under solar irradiation. Effectiveness of the prepared photocatalyst for the PS degradation was estimated through FESEM, FTIR, total organic carbon (TOC) analyzer, and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS). Quantitatively, 31.7% degradation of PS microbeads was achieved within 48 h. Therefore, this study provides an efficient and cost-effective strategy for the degradation of MPs from the aqueous medium.

Leaching kinetics and bioaccumulation potential of additive-derived organophosphate esters in microplastics

Considerable research has been conducted to evaluate microplastics (MPs) as vehicles for the transfer of hazardous pollutants in organisms. However, little effort has been devoted to the chemical release of hazardous additive-derived pollutants from MPs in gut simulations. This study looked at the leaching kinetics of organophosphate esters (OPFRs) from polypropylene (PP) and polystyrene (PS) MPs in the presence of gut surfactants, specifically sodium taurocholate, at two biologically relevant temperatures for marine organisms. Diffusion coefficients of OPFRs ranged from 1.71 × 10-20 to 4.04 × 10-18 m2 s-1 in PP and 2.91 × 10-18 to 1.51 × 10-15 m2 s-1 in PS. The accumulation factors for OPFRs in biota-plastic and biota-sediment interactions ranged from 1.52 × 10-3-69.1 and 0.02-0.7, respectively. Based on B3LYP/6-31G (d,p) calculations, the biodynamic model analysis revealed a slight increase in the bioaccumulation of OPFRs at a minor dose of 0.05% MPs. However, at higher concentrations (0.5% and 5% MPs), there was a decrease in bioaccumulation compared to the lower concentration for most OPFR compounds. In general, the ingestion of PE MPs notably contributed to the bioaccumulation of OPFRs in lugworms, whereas the contribution of PP and PS MPs was minimal. This could vary among sites exhibiting varying levels of MP concentrations or MPs displaying stronger affinities towards chemicals.

A review of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants in Türkiye: Characteristics, removal efficiency, mitigation strategies for microplastic pollution and future perspective

The effluent of WWTPs is an important source of microplastics (MP) for the aquatic environment. In this review study, MPs in wastewater treatment plants (WWTP) in Türkiye and their removal from WWTPs are reviewed for the first time. First, MP characteristics in the influent and effluent of WWTPs in Türkiye are discussed. In the next section, the abundance of MPs in the influent and effluent of WWTPs in Türkiye and the MP removal efficiency of WWTPs in Türkiye are evaluated. Then, the results of studies on MP abundance and characteristics in Türkiye's aquatic environments are presented and suggestions are made to reduce MPs released from WWTPs into the receiving environments. Strategies for reducing MPs released to the receiving environment from WWTPs of Türkiye are summarized. In the last section, research gaps regarding MPs in WWTPs in Türkiye are identified and suggestions are made for future studies. This review paper provides a comprehensive assessment of the abundance, dominant characteristics, and removal of MPs in WWTPs in Türkiye, as well as the current status and deficiencies in Türkiye. Therefore, this review can serve as a scientific guide to improve the MP removal efficiency of WWTPs in Türkiye.

Recent advances in liquid fuel production from plastic waste via pyrolysis: Emphasis on polyolefins and polystyrene

The management of plastic waste (PW) has become an indispensable worldwide issue because of the enhanced accumulation and environmental impacts of these waste materials. Thermo-catalytic pyrolysis has been proposed as an emerging technology for the valorization of PW into value-added liquid fuels. This review provides a comprehensive investigation of the latest advances in thermo-catalytic pyrolysis of PW for liquid fuel generation, by emphasizing polyethylene, polypropylene, and polystyrene. To this end, the current strategies of PW management are summarized. The various parameters affecting the thermal pyrolysis of PW (e.g., temperature, residence time, heating rate, pyrolysis medium, and plastic type) are discussed, highlighting their significant influence on feed reactivity, product yield, and carbon number distribution of the pyrolysis process. Optimizing these parameters in the pyrolysis process can ensure highly efficient energy recovery from PW. In comparison with non-catalytic PW pyrolysis, catalytic pyrolysis of PW is considered by discussing mechanisms, reaction pathways, and the performance of various catalysts. It is established that the introduction of either acid or base catalysts shifts PW pyrolysis from the conventional free radical mechanism towards the carbonium ion mechanism, altering its kinetics and pathways. This review also provides an overview of PW pyrolysis practicality for scaling up by describing techno-economic challenges and opportunities, environmental considerations, and presenting future outlooks in this field. Overall, via investigation of the recent research findings, this paper offers valuable insights into the potential of thermo-catalytic pyrolysis as an emerging strategy for PW management and the production of liquid fuels, while also highlighting avenues for further exploration and development.

Characterization of microplastics in outdoor and indoor air in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India: First insights from the region

The study focused on detecting and characterizing microplastics in outdoor and indoor air in Ranchi, Jharkhand, India during post-monsoon (2022) and winter (2023). Stereo microscopic analysis showed that plastic fibres had a dominant presence, fragments were less abundant, whereas fewer films could be detected in indoor and outdoor air. The atmospheric deposition of microplastics outdoors observed 465 ± 27 particles/m2/day in PM10 and 12104 ± 665 and 13833 ± 1152 particles/m2/day in PM2.5 in quartz and PTFE, respectively during the post-monsoon months. During winter, microplastic deposition rates in PM10 samples were found to be 689 ± 52 particles/m2/day and 19789 ± 2957 and 30087 ± 13402 in quartz and PTFE particles/m2/day respectively in PM2.5. The mean deposition rate in indoor environment during post-monsoon was 8.3 × 104 and 1.03 × 105 particles/m2/day in winter. During the post-monsoon period in PM10, there were fibres from 7.7 to 40 μm and fragments from 2.3 μm to 8.6 μm. Indoor atmospheric microplastics, fibres ranged from 1.2 to 47 μm and fragments from 0.9 to 16 μm present respectively during the post-monsoon season. Fibres and fragment sizes witnessed during winter were 3.6-6.9 μm and 2.3-34 μm, respectively. Indoor air films measured in the range of 4.1-9.6 μm. Fourier transform infrared analysis showed that outdoor air contained polyethylene, polypropylene, Polystyrene, whereas indoor air had polyvinyl chloride. Polyethylene mainly was present in outdoor air, with lesser polypropylene and polystyrene than indoors, where polyvinyl chloride and polyethylene were in dominant proportions. Elemental mapping of outdoor and indoor air samples showed the presence of elements on the microplastics. The HYSPLIT models suggest that the particles predominantly were coming from North-West during the post-monsoon season. Principal component analysis indicated wind speed and direction influencing the abundance of microplastics. Microplastics concentration showed strong seasonal influence and potential to act as reservoir of contaminants.

Polystyrene microplastics mitigate lead-induced neurotoxicity by reducing heavy metal uptake in zebrafish larvae

The combined pollution of lead (Pb) and polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) is common in aquatic environments. However, the combined neurotoxicity of these two pollutants is still poorly understood. In this study, zebrafish (Danio rerio) larvae were used to assess the combined neurotoxicity and mechanism of Pb and PS-MPs at environmentally relevant concentrations. The results showed that Pb (10 μg/L) induced abnormal behavior including significantly reduced movement distance, maximum acceleration, and average velocity (P < 0.05) along with altered expression of neurodevelopment-related genes (gap43 and α1-tubulin) (P < 0.05). PS-MPs (25 μg/L, 250 μg/L; diameter at 25 μm) co-exposure not only significantly reduced the concentration of Pb in the exposed solution (P < 0.01), but also decreased the uptake of Pb by downregulating the divalent metal transporter 1 gene (dmt1) (P < 0.01), thereby alleviating Pb-induced neurotoxicity. However, to demonstrate that PS-MPs alleviate the neurotoxicity of Pb by reducing Pb uptake, upregulation of dmt1 by addition of deferoxamine (DFO, an efficient iron chelator, 100 μM) significantly increased the Pb uptake and exacerbated neurotoxicity in zebrafish. In summary, our results demonstrated that PS-MPs alleviate Pb neurotoxicity by downregulating the mRNA level of dmt1 and decreasing the Pb uptake. This study provides a new insight into the combined neurotoxicity and underlying mechanisms of PS-MPs and Pb on zebrafish.

Production of light olefins and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from the pyrolysis of waste plastic straws over high-silica zeolite-based catalysts

Owing to the ever-increasing generation of plastic waste, the need to develop environmentally friendly disposal methods has increased. This study explored the potential of waste plastic straw to generate valuable light olefins and monocyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (MAHs) via catalytic pyrolysis using high-silica zeolite-based catalysts. HZSM-5 (SiO2/Al2O3:200) exhibited superior performance, yielding more light olefins (49.8 wt%) and a higher MAH content than Hbeta (300). This was attributed to the increased acidity and proper shape selectivity. HZSM-5 displayed better coking resistance (0.7 wt%) than Hbeta (4.4 wt%) by impeding secondary reactions, limiting coke precursor formation. The use of HZSM-5 (80) resulted in higher MAHs and lower light olefins than HZSM-5 (200) because of its higher acidity. Incorporation of Co into HZSM-5 (200) marginally lowered light olefin yield (to 44.0 wt%) while notably enhancing MAH production and boosting propene selectivity within the olefin composition. These observations are attributed to the well-balanced coexistence of Lewis and Brønsted acid sites, which stimulated the carbonium ion mechanism and induced H-transfer, cyclization, Diels-alder, and dehydrogenation reactions. The catalytic pyrolysis of plastic straw over high-silica and metal-loaded HZSM-5 catalysts has been suggested as an efficient and sustainable method for transforming plastic waste materials into valuable light olefins and MAHs.

Quantification of Polystyrene Uptake by Different Cell Lines Using Fluorescence Microscopy and Label-Free Visualization of Intracellular Polystyrene Particles by Raman Microspectroscopic Imaging

Environmental pollution caused by plastic is a present problem. Polystyrene is a widely used packaging material (e.g., Styrofoam) that can be broken down into microplastics through abrasion. Once the plastic is released into the environment, it is dispersed by wind and atmospheric dust. In this study, we investigated the uptake of polystyrene particles into human cells using A549 cells as a model of the alveolar epithelial barrier, CaCo-2 cells as a model of the intestinal epithelial barrier, and THP-1 cells as a model of immune cells to simulate a possible uptake of microplastics by inhalation, oral uptake, and interaction with the cellular immune system, respectively. The uptake of fluorescence-labeled beads by the different cell types was investigated by confocal laser scanning microscopy in a semi-quantitative, concentration-dependent manner. Additionally, we used Raman spectroscopy as a complementary method for label-free qualitative detection and the visualization of polystyrene within cells. The uptake of polystyrene beads by all investigated cell types was detected, while the uptake behavior of professional phagocytes (THP-1) differed from that of adherent epithelial cells.

An Emerging Role of Micro- and Nanoplastics in Vascular Diseases

Vascular diseases are the leading causes of death worldwide, and they are attributable to multiple pathologies, such as atherosclerosis, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Exposure to various environmental contaminants is associated with the development of various diseases, including vascular diseases. Among environmental contaminants, micro- and nanoplastics have gained attention as global environmental risk factors that threaten human health. Recently, extensive research has been conducted on the effects of micro- and nanoplastics on various human diseases, including vascular diseases. In this review, we highlight the effects of micro- and nanoplastics on vascular diseases.

Quantification and characterization of airborne microplastics in the coastal area of Terengganu, Malaysia

Microplastics (MPs) pose a threat to ecosystems due to their capacity to bind with toxic chemicals. While the occurrence of MPs in aquatic environmental matrices like water, sediments, and biota is well studied, their presence in the atmosphere remains less understood. This study aimed to determine the presence of airborne MPs and their characteristics through ground-based sampling in the coastal city of Kuala Nerus, Terengganu, Malaysia. Airborne MP samples were collected using passive sampling technique in December 2019. MPs were manually counted and identified using a stereomicroscope based on their colour and shape. The average deposition rate of airborne MPs during the sampling period was 5476 ± 3796 particles/m2/day, ranging from 576 to 15,562 particles/m2/day. Various colours such as transparent (38%), blue (25%), black (20%), red (13%), and others (4%) were observed. The predominant shape of airborne MPs was fibres (> 99%). The morphology structure of MPs observed using a scanning electron microscope (SEM) showed a cracked surface on MPs, suggesting weathering and irregular fragmentation. Further elemental analysis using energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) showed the presence of heavy metals such as aluminium (Al) and cadmium (Cd) on the surface of MPs, attributed to the adsorption capacities of MPs. Polymer types of airborne MPs were analysed using attenuated total reflectance-Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), which revealed particles composed of polyester (PES), polyethylene (PE), and polypropylene (PP). The preliminary findings could provide additional information for further investigations of MPs, especially in the atmosphere, to better understand their sources and potential human exposure.

Microplastics in Ecuador: A review of environmental and health-risk assessment challenges

Pollution from plastic debris and microplastics (MPs) is a worldwide issue. Classified as emerging contaminants, MPs have become widespread and have been found not only in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems but also within the food chain, which affects both the environment and human health. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the consumption of single-use plastics has drastically increased, intensifying mismanaged plastic waste in countries such as Ecuador. Therefore, the aim of this review is to 1) summarize the state of MP-related knowledge, focusing on studies conducted with environmental matrices, biota, and food, and 2) analyze the efforts by different national authorities and entities in Ecuador to control MP contamination. Results showed a limited number of studies have been done in Ecuador, which have mainly focused on the surface water of coastal areas, followed by studies on sediment and food. MPs were identified in all samples, indicating the lack of wastewater management policies, deficient management of solid wastes, and the contribution of anthropogenic activities such as artisanal fishing and aquaculture to water ecosystem pollution, which affects food webs. Moreover, studies have shown that food contamination can occur through atmospheric deposition of MPs; however, ingredients and inputs from food production, processing, and packaging, as well as food containers, contribute to MP occurrence in food. Further research is needed to develop more sensitive, precise, and reliable detection methods and assess MPs' impact on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, biota, and human health. In Ecuador specifically, implementing wastewater treatment plants in major cities, continuously monitoring MP coastal contamination, and establishing environmental and food safety regulations are crucial. Additionally, national authorities need to develop programs to raise public awareness of plastic use and its environmental effects, as well as MP exposure's effects on human health.

Fucoidan from Cladosiphon okamuranus enhances antioxidant activity and prevents reproductive dysfunction in polystyrene microplastic-induced male rats

Plastic pollution, including microplastic, has emerged as a severe environmental and public health problem. The health risks, especially in the case of reproductive damage caused by polystyrene microplastic (PS-MP) exposure, are emerging problems that need to be solved. This study aimed to investigate the effects of fucoidan extracted from Cladosiphon okamuranus on the polystyrene microplastic-induced oxidative stress of the Leydig (LC540) cells and reproductive damage in male rats. The oxidative stress of the LC540 cells and reproductive damage in the rats were induced by PS-MP. The fucoidan treatment reduces nitric oxide (NO) and reactive oxygen species generation in the LC540 cells. In the animal study, fucoidan treatment enhanced enzymatic antioxidant activities (glutathione peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase, and glutathione reductase) and reduced malondialdehyde and nitric oxide production. Fucoidan supplementation also downregulates tumor necrosis factor-alpha, interleukin-6, and caspase-3 expression. Additionally, fucoidan upregulates testosterone levels, prevents the reduction of epithelium thickness, and reduces the area of the seminiferous tubule lumen. According to these conditions, fucoidan from Cladosiphon okamuranus prevents reproductive damage by downregulating oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory cytokines. Therefore, fucoidan can be used as a source of food supplements or functional food ingredients for reproductive or testicular damage management.

A review on factors related to patient comfort experience in hospitals

The creation of a welcoming hospital atmosphere is necessary to improve patient wellbeing and encourage healing. The goal of this study was to examine the variables affecting hospitalised patients' comfort. The study procedure included a thorough search of the Web of Science and Scopus databases, as well as the use of software analytic tools to graphically map enormous literature data, providing a deeper understanding of the linkages within the literature and its changing patterns. Insights from a range of disciplines, including engineering, psychology, immunology, microbiology, and environmental science, were included into our study using content analysis and clustering approaches. The physical environment and the social environment are two crucial factors that are related to patient comfort. The study stress the need of giving patient comfort a top priority as they heal, especially by tackling indoor air pollution. Our research also emphasises how important hospital care and food guidelines are for improving patient comfort. Prioritising patients who need specialised care and attention, especially those who have suffered trauma, should be the focus of future study. Future research in important fields including trauma, communication, hospital architecture, and nursing will be built on the findings of this study. To enhance research in these crucial areas, worldwide collaboration between experts from other nations is also advised. Although many studies stress the significance of patient comfort, few have drawn conclusions from a variety of disciplines, including medicine, engineering, immunology, microbiology, and environmental science, the most crucial issue of thoroughly researching the improvement of patient comfort has not been addressed. Healthcare workers, engineers, and other professions will benefit greatly from this study's investigation of the connection between hospital indoor environments and patient comfort.

Journey of micronanoplastics with blood components

The entry of micro- and nanoplastics (MNPs) into the human body is inevitable. They enter blood circulation through ingestion, inhalation, and dermal contact by crossing the gut-lung-skin barrier (the epithelium of the digestive tract, the respiratory tract, and the cutaneous layer). There are many reports on their toxicities to organs and tissues. This paper presents the first thorough assessment of MNP-driven bloodstream toxicity and the mechanism of toxicity from the viewpoint of both MNP and environmental co-pollutant complexes. Toxic impacts include plasma protein denaturation, hemolysis, reduced immunity, thrombosis, blood coagulation, and vascular endothelial damage, among others, which can lead to life-threatening diseases. Protein corona formation, oxidative stress, cytokine alterations, inflammation, and cyto- and genotoxicity are the key mechanisms involved in toxicity. MNPs change the secondary structure of plasma proteins, thereby preventing their transport functions (for nutrients, drugs, oxygen, etc.). MNPs inhibit erythropoiesis by influencing hematopoietic stem cell proliferation and differentiation. They cause red blood cell and platelet aggregation, as well as increased adherence to endothelial cells, which can lead to thrombosis and cardiovascular disease. White blood cells and immune cells phagocytose MNPs, provoking inflammation. However, research gaps still exist, including gaps regarding the combined toxicity of MNPs and co-pollutants, toxicological studies in human models, advanced methodologies for toxicity analysis, bioaccumulation studies, inflammation and immunological responses, dose-response relationships of MNPs, and the effect of different physiochemical characteristics of MNPs. Furthermore, most studies have analyzed toxicity using prepared MNPs; hence, studies must be undertaken using true-to-life MNPs to determine the real-world scenario. Additionally, nanoplastics may further degrade into monomers, whose toxic effects have not yet been explored. The research gaps highlighted in this review will inspire future studies on the toxicity of MNPs in the vascular/circulatory systems utilizing in vivo models to enable more reliable health risk assessment.

The first evidence of microplastic occurrence in mine water: The largest black coal mining area in the Czech Republic

Climate change is creating new challenges for water supply worldwide, making the search for new sources of water vital. As mine water could serve as a potential source, this study investigated the presence of microplastics in water from terminated deep mines in the largest coal basin in the Czech Republic, as well as in water from nearby shallow wells. The particles found were analyzed for size, polymer composition, color and morphology using the ImageJ tool, infrared spectroscopy with Fourier transform (FTIR) and an optical stereomicroscope with a digital camera. Microplastics were detected in all tested sites. Their range accounted for 2.5-17.5 items/L for mine water samples and 2.5-20 items/L for well samples, with fibers being the dominant type. The average width of particles from mine water and wells amounted to 58 µm; 71 µm, length to 655 µm; 501 µm and area to 22,067 µm2; 28,613 µm2, respectively. Blue color was prevalent, among materials, in both cases, plastic coated paper was found dominant to Polyethylene terephthalate (PET), Polyester (PES), Tetrafluoroethylene-perfluoro (Propyl Vinyl Ether) - Copolymer (TFE-PPVE), and polypropylene (PP). The research provides the first evidence of microplastics' presence in underground waters from deep mines and shallow wells in the same area. The data suggest that it is almost impossible to find underground water sources free of microplastic contamination. In this context, atmospheric contamination from mine ventilation and infiltration through terminated mines were identified as potential sources, while infiltration through soil and rock formations is unlikely given the geological composition. The results of this study can serve as a relevant basis for further research on microplastics in mine waters. Additionally, the conclusions can advance the development in remediation technologies of microplastics from deep underground waters and their implementation in practice, particularly in light of upcoming legislation.

Melatonin Alleviates Intestinal Barrier Damaging Effects Induced by Polyethylene Microplastics in Albino Rats

There have been concerns about the potential health risks posed by microplastics (MP). The detection of MP in a variety of food products revealed that humans are ingesting MP. Nevertheless, there is a paucity of data about their impacts, as well as their uptake, on intestinal barrier integrity. This study examined the toxic effects of oral administration of two doses of polyethylene microplastics (PE-MP) (3.75 or 15 mg/kg/day for 5 weeks; mean particle size: 4.0-6.0 µm) on the intestinal barrier integrity in rats. Moreover, the effect of melatonin treatment with MP exposure was also assessed. The PE-MP particle uptake, histopathological changes, Alcian blue staining, Muc2 mRNA, proinflammatory cytokines (IL-1β and TNF-α), and cleaved caspase-3, as well as tight junction proteins (claudin-1, myosin light-chain kinase (MLCK), occludin, and zonula occludens-1 (ZO-1)) were assessed. Oral administration of PE-MP resulted in apparent jejunal histopathological alterations; significantly decreased mucin secretion, occludin, ZO-1, and claudin-1 expression; and significantly upregulated MLCK mRNA, IL-1β concentration, and cleaved caspase-3 expression. Melatonin reversed these altered parameters and improved the PE-MP-induced histopathological and ultrastructure changes. This study highlighted the PE-MP's toxic effect on intestinal barrier integrity and revealed the protective effect of melatonin.

Ecotoxicological significance of bio-corona formation on micro/nanoplastics in aquatic organisms

The unsustainable manufacturing, utilization and inadequate handling of plastics have led to a surge in global plastic pollution. In recent times, there has been increasing concern about the plausible hazards associated with exposure to micro/nanoplastics (M/NPs). As aquatic systems are considered to be the likely sink for M/NPs, it is crucial to comprehend their environmental behavior. The bioavailability, toxicity and fate of M/NPs in the environment are predominantly dictated by their surface characteristics. In the aquatic environment, M/NPs are prone to be internalized by aquatic organisms. This may facilitate their interaction with a diverse array of biomolecules within the organism, resulting in the formation of a biocorona (BC). The development of BC causes modifications in the physicochemical attributes of the M/NPs including changes to their size, stability, surface charge and other properties. This review details the concept of BC formation and its underlying mechanism. It provides insight on the analytical techniques employed for characterizing BC formation and addresses the associated challenges. Further, the eco-toxicological implications of M/NPs and the role of BC in modifying their potential toxicity on aquatic organisms is specified. The impact of BC formation on the fate and transport of M/NPs is discussed. A concise outlook on the future perspectives is also presented.

Microplastics pollution in agricultural farms soils: preliminary findings from tropical environment (Klang Valley, Malaysia)

The aim of this research is to investigate the occurrence, characteristics, and potential sources of microplastic pollution at four agricultural farms in Malaysia's tropical region of Klang Valley. The mean number of microplastic particles found in the agricultural soils were 2.1 ± 0.44 to 3.4 ± 1.2 particles/kg. Farms B and D had the lowest and highest total microplastic particle counts, 1.5 and 6.0 particles/kg, respectively, which was in line with the intensity of plastic consumption at these farms. Microplastics particle sizes ranged from 16.7 to 1.246 µm, attributed to their extensive breakdown processes. The microplastic particle shapes (film, fiber, and fragment) and colors (black, white, red, and blue) from the soil samples reflected the type of plastic products used and unmanaged plastic waste at these farms. Plastic nets, mulching films, and unmanaged plastics waste constituted the major microplastics sources at these farms. Our findings confirm microplastic pollution in tropical agricultural soils as well as the need to assess the negative effects of long-term plastic use on agricultural soils.

Sleep matters: Neurodegeneration spectrum heterogeneity, combustion and friction ultrafine particles, industrial nanoparticle pollution, and sleep disorders-Denial is not an option

Sustained exposures to ubiquitous outdoor/indoor fine particulate matter (PM_2.5), including combustion and friction ultrafine PM (UFPM) and industrial nanoparticles (NPs) starting in utero, are linked to early pediatric and young adulthood aberrant neural protein accumulation, including hyperphosphorylated tau (p-tau), beta-amyloid (Aβ_{1 - 42}), α-synuclein (α syn) and TAR DNA-binding protein 43 (TDP-43), hallmarks of Alzheimer's (AD), Parkinson's disease (PD), frontotemporal lobar degeneration (FTLD), and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). UFPM from anthropogenic and natural sources and NPs enter the brain through the nasal/olfactory pathway, lung, gastrointestinal (GI) tract, skin, and placental barriers. On a global scale, the most important sources of outdoor UFPM are motor traffic emissions. This study focuses on the neuropathology heterogeneity and overlap of AD, PD, FTLD, and ALS in older adults, their similarities with the neuropathology of young, highly exposed urbanites, and their strong link with sleep disorders. Critical information includes how this UFPM and NPs cross all biological barriers, interact with brain soluble proteins and key organelles, and result in the oxidative, endoplasmic reticulum, and mitochondrial stress, neuroinflammation, DNA damage, protein aggregation and misfolding, and faulty complex protein quality control. The brain toxicity of UFPM and NPs makes them powerful candidates for early development and progression of fatal common neurodegenerative diseases, all having sleep disturbances. A detailed residential history, proximity to high-traffic roads, occupational histories, exposures to high-emission sources (i.e., factories, burning pits, forest fires, and airports), indoor PM sources (tobacco, wood burning in winter, cooking fumes, and microplastics in house dust), and consumption of industrial NPs, along with neurocognitive and neuropsychiatric histories, are critical. Environmental pollution is a ubiquitous, early, and cumulative risk factor for neurodegeneration and sleep disorders. Prevention of deadly neurological diseases associated with air pollution should be a public health priority.

Developments in advanced oxidation processes for removal of microplastics from aqueous matrices

Continuous incorporation of microplastics (MPs) and their fragmented residues into the ecosystem has sparked significant scientific apprehensions about persistence, a multitude of sources, and toxicity impacts on human health and aquatic entities. Overcoming this multifaceted hazard necessitates the development of novel techniques with robust efficiencies to eliminate microplastics from the environmental compartments. Coagulation, flocculation, and membrane filtration are non-destructive techniques but necessitate extra steps for microplastic degradation, whereas biological means have been confirmed less efficient (less than 15% degradation). Recent reports have emphasized advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) as practical treatment alternatives, representing superior catalytic efficacy for microplastic degradation (≈30-95%). Nevertheless, additional investigations should be carried out to evaluate the performance of AOPs in degrading microplastics under real environmental matrices. Moreover, the detection of transformed metabolites, degradation mechanistic insights, and toxicity bioassays are required to substantiate AOP assumption as feasible remediation substitutes. This review focuses on the source, occurrence, discharge, transportation, and associated paramount health risks of microplastics. Advanced oxidation processes-assisted removal of microplastics from the aqueous matrices is thoroughly vetted with up-to-date findings. Factors affecting the degradation of MPs have been discussed in detail. In addition to the generalized mechanistic insights into photocatalytic degradation, the risk assessment of aging intermediates is also comprehended. Finally, the review was concluded by emphasizing current research gaps and incoming research tendencies to provide guidelines for efficiently addressing microplastic pollution.

Impact of Micro- and Nanoplastics on Mitochondria

Mitochondria are highly dynamic cellular organelles that perform crucial functions such as respiration, energy production, metabolism, and cell fate decisions. Mitochondrial damage and dysfunction critically lead to the pathogenesis of various diseases including cancer, diabetes, and neurodegenerative and cardiovascular disorders. Mitochondrial damage in response to environmental contaminant exposure and its association with the pathogenesis of diseases has also been reported. Recently, persistent pollutants, such as micro- and nanoplastics, have become growing global environmental threats with potential health risks. In this review, we discuss the impact of micro- and nanoplastics on mitochondria and review current knowledge in this field.
