Abstract
In tic disorders (TD), tic expression varies across the lifespan and as a function of contextual factors. This study explored connections between tic expression and contextual triggers across life periods in 74 adults (Mage = 23.2) with TDs. The Tic History and Coping Strategies form assessed retrospective self-reports of contextual antecedents, consequences, and tic severity during four life periods (middle school; 9th/10th grade; 11th/12th grade; college/work) and past month. Tics reportedly worsened during and after school in school-aged years and worsened in the evening during college/work years. Stress and anxiety were reported to consistently trigger tics across time. The impact of activities, places, and emotions did not differ across life periods. Attention-based consequences, most prevalent during middle school, were more common than escape- or avoidance-related consequences across all periods. Findings illuminate how contextual factors may influence tics across life periods and underscore the consistent impact of tic-triggering emotions and attention-related consequences.

Abstract
Behavior therapy is a well-established and empirically supported treatment for tic disorders (TDs). However, concerns have been expressed about the negative effects of behavioral interventions, such as tic worsening, tic substitution, and excessive effort. This study explored perceived negative effects of tic management strategies in adults with TDs and predictors of these experiences. Participants (N = 72) completed semi-structured interviews 11 years after receiving behavior therapy or supportive therapy in a randomized clinical trial. We examined responses to interview questions about managing tics and predictors of reported negative effects. Most participants did not experience tic worsening (84%) or tic substitution (75%) from tic management strategies. The majority felt they could manage tics while participating in their environment (87%) and did not report life interference from tic management (77%). About half (45%) felt less present when managing tics. Treatment non-responders in the original trial were more likely to report negative effects of tic management strategies. No differences in reported negative consequences were found between those who received behavior therapy versus supportive therapy, suggesting that behavior therapy specifically does not lead to such adverse effects. These findings could reduce misconceptions about behavior therapy for TDs and enhance its acceptability and utilization.

Abstract
The purpose of the present study was to estimate the factors linked to the prognosis of children with provisional tic disorder (PTD). We conducted a prospective cohort study enrolled children with PTD who were subsequently followed-up at three-month intervals for 1 year post-enrolment. A total of 259 PTD patients were included in the final analysis. At the end of the follow-up period, 77 (30%) of the patients had achieved clinical remission. Result of the LASSO logistic regression analysis revealed that a disease duration >3 months (OR=4.20, 95% CI 1.20-14.73), moderate/severe tic severity (OR=5.57, 95% CI 2.26-13.76), and comorbid behavioral problems (OR=2.78, 95% CI 1.15-6.69) were significant factors linked to remission in the PTD patients. The path analysis model showed that comorbid behavioral problems and recurrence partially mediated the association between tic severity and remission, with a mediating effect of 37%. Conclusions: We have identified several significant factors linked to prognosis in children with PTD, including comorbid behavioral problems and recurrence, which were found to be important mediators. These findings provide new insights for the clinical management of patients with PTD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Provisional Tic Disorder (PTD) is common in childhood. The received wisdom among clinicians is that PTD is short-lived and mild, with at most a few tics, and rarely includes complex tics, premonitory phenomena or comorbid illnesses. However, such conclusions come from clinical experience, with biased ascertainment and limited follow-up. METHODS Prospective study of 89 children with tics starting 0-9 months ago (median 4 months), fewer than half from clinical sources. Follow-up at 12 (± 24, 36, 48) months after the first tic. RESULTS At study entry, many children had ADHD (39), an anxiety disorder (27), OCD (9) or enuresis (17). All had at least two current tics, with a mean total since onset of 6.9 motor and 2.0 phonic tics. Forty-one had experienced a complex tic, and 69 could suppress some tics. Tics were clinically meaningful: 64 had tics severe enough for a clinical trial, and 76 families sought medical attention for the tics. At 12 months, 79 returned, and 78 still had tics. Of these, 29 manifested no tics during history and extended examination, but only via audio-visual monitoring when the child was seated alone. Only 12/70 now had plans to see a doctor for tics. Most who returned at 2-4 years still had tics known to the child and family, but medical impact was low. CONCLUSIONS Our results do not contradict previous data, but overturn clinical lore. The data strongly argue against the longstanding but arbitrary tradition of separating tic disorders into recent-onset versus chronic.

Abstract
Tics are sudden, repetitive movements or vocalizations. Tic disorders, such as Tourette syndrome (TS), are contributed by the interplay of genetic risk factors and environmental variables, leading to abnormalities in the functioning of the cortico-striatal-thalamo-cortical (CSTC) circuitry. Various neurotransmitter systems, such as gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) and dopamine, are implicated in the pathophysiology of these disorders. Building on the evidence that tic disorders are predominant in males and exacerbated by stress, emerging research is focusing on the involvement of neuroactive steroids, including dehydroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) and allopregnanolone, in the ontogeny of tics and other phenotypes associated with TS. Emerging evidence indicates that DHEAS levels are significantly elevated in the plasma of TS-affected boys, and the clinical onset of this disorder coincides with the period of adrenarche, the developmental stage characterized by a surge in DHEAS synthesis. On the other hand, allopregnanolone has garnered particular attention for its potential to mediate the adverse effects of acute stress on the exacerbation of tic severity and frequency. Notably, both neurosteroids act as key modulators of GABA-A receptors, suggesting a pivotal role of these targets in the pathophysiology of various clinical manifestations of tic disorders. This review explores the potential mechanisms by which these and other neuroactive steroids may influence tic disorders and discusses the emerging therapeutic strategies that target neuroactive steroids for the management of tic disorders.

Abstract
Tic disorders (TD), including Tourette Syndrome, are characterized by involuntary, repetitive movements and/or vocalizations that can lead to persistent disability and impairment across the lifespan. Existing research demonstrates that video-based behavioral coding (VBBC) methods can be used to reliably quantify tics, enabling a more objective approach to tic measurement above and beyond standardly used TD questionnaires. VBBC is becoming more popular given the ease and ubiquity of obtaining patient videos. However, rigor and reproducibility of this work has been limited by undescribed and unstandardized approaches to using VBBC methods in TD research. The current paper describes "best practices" for VBBC in TD research, which have been tested and refined in our research over the past 15+ years, including considerations for data acquisition, coding implementation, interrater reliability demonstration, and methods reporting. We also address ethical considerations for researchers using this method.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tourette syndrome (TS) tics are typically quantified using "paper and pencil" rating scales that are susceptible to factors that adversely impact validity. Video-based methods to more objectively quantify tics have been developed but are challenged by reliance on human raters and procedures that are resource intensive. Computer vision approaches that automate detection of atypical movements may be useful to apply to tic quantification. OBJECTIVE The current proof-of-concept study applied a computer vision approach to train a supervised deep learning algorithm to detect eye tics in video, the most common tic type in patients with TS. METHODS Videos (N = 54) of 11 adolescent patients with TS were rigorously coded by trained human raters to identify 1.5-second clips depicting "eye tic events" (N = 1775) and "non-tic events" (N = 3680). Clips were encoded into three-dimensional facial landmarks. Supervised deep learning was applied to processed data using random split and disjoint split regimens to simulate model validity under different conditions. RESULTS Area under receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.89 for the random split regimen, indicating high accuracy in the algorithm's ability to properly classify eye tic vs. non-eye tic movements. Area under receiver operating characteristic curve was 0.74 for the disjoint split regimen, suggesting that algorithm generalizability is more limited when trained on a small patient sample. CONCLUSIONS The algorithm was successful in detecting eye tics in unseen validation sets. Automated tic detection from video is a promising approach for tic quantification that may have future utility in TS screening, diagnostics, and treatment outcome measurement. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study aimed to understand health care experiences among a sample of caregivers of children with TDs to inform future directions for improving the health care system. METHODS We conducted a survey of caregivers of youth with TDs and used descriptive statistics and quantitative analyses to characterize the health care utilization practices of the sample. RESULTS The majority (70%) of families first consulted their pediatrician/primary care provider, and caregivers reported receiving care in line with current best practice guidelines. However, caregivers in the current sample perceived a lack of knowledgeability on the part of their first providers, which significantly predicted more providers seen and also reported difficulty finding specialty providers (63% of the sample reported difficulty finding a treatment provider who understood tics). CONCLUSION Results suggest that improving caregiver satisfaction with early health care experiences for their child's TD may help to relieve the burden on families and the health care system more broadly, along with continued efforts to increase the number of specialty providers available.

Abstract
Tic disorders (TDs) are a group of common neuropsychiatric disorders of childhood and adolescence. TDs may impact the physical, emotional, and social well-being of the affected person. In this review, we present an update on the clinical manifestations, pathophysiology, diagnosis, and treatment of TDs. We searched the PubMed database for articles on tics and Tourette syndrome. More than 400 articles were reviewed, of which 141 are included in this review. TDs are more prevalent in children than in adults and in males than in females. It may result from a complex interaction between various genetic, environmental, and immunological factors. Dysregulation in the cortico-striato-pallido-thalamo-cortical network is the most plausible pathophysiology resulting in tics. TD is a clinical diagnosis based on clinical features and findings on neurological examination, especially the identification of tic phenomenology. In addition to tics, TD patients may have sensory features, including premonitory urge; enhanced and persistent sensitivity to non-noxious external or internal stimuli; and behavioral manifestations, including attention deficit hyperactivity disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, and autism spectrum disorders. Clinical findings of hyperkinetic movements that usually mimic tics have been compared and contrasted with those of TD. Patients with TD may not require specific treatment if tics are not distressing. Psychoeducation and supportive therapy can help reduce tics when combined with medication. Dispelling myths and promoting acceptance are important to improve patient outcomes. Using European, Canadian, and American guidelines, the treatment of TD, including behavioral therapy, medical therapy, and emerging/experimental therapy, has been discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many children with tic disorders outgrow their tics, but little is known about the proportion of individuals who will continue to require specialist services in adulthood and which variables are associated with tic persistence. OBJECTIVES The aims were to estimate the proportion of individuals first diagnosed with tic disorders in childhood who continued to receive tic disorder diagnoses after age 18 years and to identify risk factors for persistence. METHODS In this Swedish nationwide cohort study including 3761 individuals diagnosed with tic disorders in childhood, we calculated the proportion of individuals whose diagnoses persisted into adulthood. Minimally adjusted logistic regression models examined the associations between sociodemographic, clinical, and family variables and tic disorder persistence. A multivariable model was then fitted, including only variables that were statistically significant in the minimally adjusted models. RESULTS Seven hundred and fifty-four (20%) children with tic disorders received a diagnosis of a chronic tic disorder in adulthood. Psychiatric comorbidity in childhood (particularly attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder, pervasive developmental disorders, and anxiety disorders) and psychiatric disorders in first-degree relatives (particularly tic and anxiety disorders) were the strongest risk factors for persistence. We did not observe statistically significant associations with socioeconomic variables, perinatal complications, comorbid autoimmune diseases, or family history of autoimmune diseases. All statistically significant variables combined explained approximately 10% of the variance in tic disorder persistence (P < 0.0001). CONCLUSIONS Childhood psychiatric comorbidities and family history of psychiatric disorders were the strongest risk factors associated with tic disorder persistence into adulthood. © 2023 The Authors. Abstract
BACKGROUND Tics are common in children and young people and may persist into adulthood. Tics can cause challenges with social, occupational, physical, and academic functioning. The current study explores the perceptions of adults with tics and parents/carers of young people with tics regarding their experience of accessing support from professionals in primary care in the UK. METHODS Two online cross-sectional surveys were completed by 33 adults with tics and 94 parents/carers of children with tics. Participants were recruited across three online tic support groups. Tic specialist psychologists, academic researchers, and people with lived experience of tics provided feedback on the surveys before they were made available online. Mixed-method analyses were conducted on the surveys. Qualitative data from the free-text responses were analysed using thematic analysis and triangulated with quantitative findings where appropriate. RESULTS While some participants felt supported by general practitioners (GPs), many felt dismissed. The impact of tics was not always explored, nor information on tics provided, during the consultation. Although 78.7% of participants were referred to secondary care for their tics, some struggled to get the referral. Within secondary care, most adult respondents were assessed by neurologists whilst young people were typically assessed by paediatricians or psychiatrists. Most of these secondary care clinicians did not specialise in tic disorders, with only 27.9% of participants being assessed by tic specialists. Mode waitlist time was 3-6 months for young people and longer for adult respondents. Some participants were referred to multiple secondary care services, spanning neurology, paediatrics, and psychiatry, with each stating that they do not provide support for tics. 21% of participants mentioned being discharged from secondary care with no ongoing support. Almost one-third of respondents accessed support within private healthcare. CONCLUSIONS Generally, more negative than positive experiences were reported. Possible contributing factors included a lack of clear tic referral pathways, long waitlists, a lack of information about tics provided in primary care appointments and a lack of support offered following diagnosis by secondary care services, together with poor access to tic specialist clinicians. This study highlights areas where improvements to UK services for tics can be made.

Abstract
Tourette syndrome (TS) is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by involuntary motor and speech tics, which can greatly reduce the quality of life of patients. The pathophysiology of TS involves both genetic and environmental factors. Assessing TS pathogenesis is complex, and its underlying pathophysiology is not fully understood. It is gratifying that the research in the past 5 years has brought new research progress on the genetic, neurophysiological and brain network changes of TS. However, despite the progress of research, the treatment methods and drugs of modern medicine are still unsatisfactory, and it is difficult to achieve satisfactory results. Traditional Chinese medicine, as a part of complementary and alternative medicine, has unique efficacy in the treatment of TS, and the safety of its treatment is also worthy of attention. Based on the latest achievements in the pathophysiology of TS, this article will discuss the treatment of TS by acupuncture combined with medicine.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Eight members of the International Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Society Tic and Tourette Syndrome Study Group formed a subcommittee to discuss further barriers to practice guideline implementation. Based on expert opinion and literature review, the consensus was that practice variations continue to be quite broad and that many barriers in different clinical settings might negatively influence the adoption of the American Academy of Neurology and the European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome published guidelines. OBJECTIVES 1) To identify how clinical practices diverge from the existing American Academy of Neurology and European Society for the Study of Tourette Syndrome guidelines, and 2) to identify categories of barriers leading to these clinical care gaps. METHODS AND ANALYSIS This article presents the methodology of a planned cross-sectional survey amongst healthcare professionals routinely involved in the clinical care of patients with persistent tic disorders, aimed at 1) identifying how practices diverge from the published guidelines; and 2) identifying categories of barriers leading to these clinical care gaps. Purposeful sampling methods are used to identify and recruit critical persistent tic disorders stakeholders. The analysis will use descriptive statistics.

Abstract
Over the past decade, behavioral interventions have become increasingly recognized and recommended as effective first-line therapies for treating individuals with tic disorders. In this article, we describe a basic theoretical and conceptual framework through which the reader can understand the application of these interventions for treating tics. The three primary behavioral interventions for tics with the strongest empirical support (habit reversal, Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics, and exposure and response prevention) are described. Research on the efficacy and effectiveness of these treatments is summarized along with a discussion of the research evaluating the delivery of these treatments in different formats and modalities. The article closes with a review of the possible mechanisms of change underlying behavioral interventions for tics and areas for future research.

Abstract
Background: Recent years have seen a dramatic increase in new "tic" cases in teens and young adults. These individuals often present with fulminant onset of symptoms not commonly seen in Tourette syndrome (TS) and are often diagnosed with Functional Neurological Symptom Disorder (FND-tic). However, some authors have questioned whether this illness truly differs from typical Provisional Tic Disorder (PTD) and TS. Previous studies have compared FND-tic, usually a few months after symptom onset, to patients with TS, usually years after symptom onset. We sought to test whether the presenting symptoms of FND-tic differ substantially from those in patients at a similar duration of symptoms who are later diagnosed with TS. Methods: This comparative study examines clinical features summarized from published reports of FND-tic with novel data from a longitudinal study of PTD. This study came from a referral center for TS and tic disorders and included 89 children with tics whose first tic occurred a median of 3.6 months earlier, nearly all of whom were diagnosed with a chronic tic disorder at follow-up. Specifically, we examine clinical features identified in a recent literature review as supporting a diagnosis of FND-tic, including symptom characteristics, course, severity and comorbidity. Results: Several clinical features dramatically distinguish the patients diagnosed with FND-tic from those diagnosed with typical PTD. For example, coprophenomena are reported at or shortly after symptom onset in over half of FND-tic patients, whereas even several months after onset, coprophenomena had occurred in only 1 of 89 children with PTD. Six clinical features each have a positive predictive value over 90% for FND-tic diagnosis if prior probability is 50%. Conclusions: These new data provide strong evidence supporting the diagnostic validity of FND-tic as distinct from TS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Tic disorders (TD) are complex neuropsychiatric disorders frequently associated with a variety of comorbid problems, whose negative effects may exceed those of the tics themselves. In this study, we aimed to explore the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of children with TD and behavioral problems, and develop a prediction model of behavioral problems based on the predictors under real-world conditions. METHODS A hospital-based cross-sectional study was conducted on children with TD. Behavioral problems were surveyed using the Achenbach Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL). Sociodemographic information was collected from face-to-face interviews using an electronic questionnaire administered during the initial ambulatory visit. Clinical data were collected from medical records, and quality control was performed. The sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of patients with and without behavioral problems were statistically compared, and a nomogram prediction model was developed based on multivariate logistic regression analysis. The discriminatory ability and clinical utility of the nomogram were assessed by concordance index (C-index), receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, decision curve analysis (DCA) and clinical impact curve (CIC). RESULTS A total of 343 TD cases were included in the final analysis, of which 30.32% had behavioral problems. The prediction model showed age 12-16 years, abnormal birth history, parenting pattern of indulgence, parent/close relatives with psychiatric disorders, chronic motor or vocal tic disorder (CTD)/Tourette syndrome (TS) and moderate/severe tic severity were associated with behavioral problems in children with TD. The C-index of the prediction model (nomogram) was 0.763 (95% confidence interval, 0.710 ~ 0.816). The nomogram was feasible for making beneficial clinical decisions, according to the satisfactory results of the DCA and CIC. CONCLUSIONS A nomogram prediction model for comorbid behavioral problems in children with TD was established. The prediction model demonstrated a good discriminative ability and predictive performance for beneficial clinical decisions. This model further provides a comprehensive understanding of associated sociodemographic and clinical characteristics by visual graphs and allows clinicians to rapidly identify patients with a higher risk of behavioral problems and tailor necessary interventions to improve clinical outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES All US Food and Drug Administration-approved medications for Tourette syndrome are antipsychotics, and their use is limited by the risk of weight gain, metabolic changes, and drug-induced movement disorders. Several small trials suggest that ecopipam, a first-in-class, selective dopamine 1 receptor antagonist, reduces tics with a low risk for these adverse events. This trial sought to further evaluate the efficacy, safety, and tolerability of ecopipam in children and adolescents with moderate to severe Tourette syndrome. METHODS This was a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled, phase 2b trial. Subjects aged ≥6 to <18 years with a baseline Yale Global Tic Severity Score Total Tic Score of ≥20 were randomly assigned 1:1 to ecopipam (n = 76) or placebo (n = 77). The primary endpoint was mean change over 12 weeks in the Yale Global Tic Severity Score Total Tic Score. The Clinical Global Impression of Tourette Syndrome Severity was the secondary endpoint. Safety and tolerability were evaluated at each study visit. RESULTS Total tic scores were significantly reduced from baseline to 12 weeks in the ecopipam group compared with placebo (least squares mean differences -3.44, 95% confidence interval -6.09 to -0.79, P = .01). Improvement in Clinical Global Impression of Tourette Syndrome Severity was also greater in the ecopipam group (P = .03). More weight gain was seen in subjects assigned to placebo. No metabolic or electrocardiogram changes were identified. Headache (15.8%), insomnia (14.5%), fatigue (7.9%), and somnolence (7.9%) were the most common adverse events. CONCLUSIONS Among children and adolescents with TS, ecopipam reduces tics to a greater extent than placebo, without observable evidence of common antipsychotic-associated side effects.

Abstract
Tourette syndrome is a chronic neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by motor and phonic tics that can substantially diminish the quality of life of affected individuals. Evaluating and treating Tourette syndrome is complex, in part due to the heterogeneity of symptoms and comorbidities between individuals. The underlying pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome is not fully understood, but recent research in the past 5 years has brought new insights into the genetic variations and the alterations in neurophysiology and brain networks contributing to its pathogenesis. Treatment options for Tourette syndrome are expanding with novel pharmacological therapies and increased use of deep brain stimulation for patients with symptoms that are refractory to pharmacological or behavioural treatments. Potential predictors of patient responses to therapies for Tourette syndrome, such as specific networks modulated during deep brain stimulation, can guide clinical decisions. Multicentre data sharing initiatives have enabled several advances in our understanding of the genetics and pathophysiology of Tourette syndrome and will be crucial for future large-scale research and in refining effective treatments.

Abstract
Background Tic disorder is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterized by motor and phonic tic symptoms. Tourette syndrome (TS) is a subtype of tic disorder that shows more persistent tic symptoms. The etiological mechanism of TS concerning immune dysfunction remains unclear due to limited evidence, especially for pediatric TS patients. Method In the present study, a meta-analysis was performed to confirm the identified changes in proinflammatory cytokines and T cells of pediatric TS patients. A total of five databases, including PubMed, Web of Science, PsycINFO, Google Scholar and the China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), were used for the literature search. The standardized mean difference (SMD) and mean difference (MD) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) were used to present the effect size of each type of proinflammatory cytokine and T cell. Sensitivity analysis, subgroup analysis and meta-regression analysis were used to explore the heterogeneity of the meta-analysis. This meta-analysis was registered in the International Platform of Registered Systematic Review and Meta-analysis Protocols (number: INPLASY2021110079). Results In the 25 studies included in this meta-analysis, thirteen studies focused on the levels of T cells, and twelve studies focused on the levels of proinflammatory cytokines. Based on the random-effects model, the pooled MDs are -1.45 (95% CI: -3.44, 0.54) for CD3 cells, -4.44 (95% CI: -6.80, -2.08) for CD4 cells, and 1.94 (95% CI: -0.08, 3.97) for CD8 cells. The pooled SMDs are1.36 for IL-6 (95% CI: 0.00, 2.72) and 2.39 for tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α) (95% CI: 0.93, 3.84). Conclusion We provided evidence of immune dysfunction in pediatric TS patients, with elevated levels of particular proinflammatory cytokines and disproportionate changes in T-cell subpopulations. Small to large effect sizes were identified for increased IL-6 levels as well as a reduced number of T helper cells, while a large effect size was identified for increased TNF-α levels. These results indicate a close association between peripheral immune activation and TS. However, the most direct and meaningful interaction between peripheral immune status and microglial activation in the central nervous system in TS patients requires further exploration.

Abstract
Comprehensive Behavioral Intervention for Tics (CBIT) is considered a first-line therapy for tics. However, availability of CBIT is extremely limited due to a lack of qualified therapists. This study is a multicenter (n = 5), randomized, controlled, observer-blind trial including 161 adult patients with chronic tic disorders (CTD) to provide data on efficacy and safety of an internet-delivered, completely therapist-independent CBIT intervention (iCBIT Minddistrict®) in the treatment of tics compared to placebo and face-to-face (f2f) CBIT. Using a linear mixed model with the change to baseline of Yale Global Tic Severity Scale-Total Tic Score (YGTSS-TTS) as a dependent variable, we found a clear trend towards significance for superiority of iCBIT (n = 67) over placebo (n = 70) (−1.28 (−2.58; 0.01); p = 0.053). In addition, the difference in tic reduction between iCBIT and placebo increased, resulting in a significant difference 3 (−2.25 (−3.75; −0.75), p = 0.003) and 6 months (−2.71 (−4.27; −1.16), p < 0.001) after the end of treatment. Key secondary analysis indicated non-inferiority of iCBIT in comparison to f2f CBIT (n = 24). No safety signals were detected. Although the primary endpoint was narrowly missed, it is strongly suggested that iCBIT is superior compared to placebo. Remarkably, treatment effects of iCBIT even increased over time.

Abstract
Tics in Tourette syndrome are often difficult to discern from single spontaneous movements or vocalizations in healthy people. In this study, videos of patients with Tourette syndrome and healthy controls were taken and independently scored according to the Modified Rush Videotape Rating Scale. We included n = 101 patients with Tourette syndrome (71 males, 30 females, mean age 17.36 years ± 10.46 standard deviation) and n = 109 healthy controls (57 males, 52 females, mean age 17.62 years ± 8.78 standard deviation) in a machine learning-based analysis. The results showed that the severity of motor tics, but not vocal phenomena, is the best predictor to separate and classify patients with Tourette syndrome and healthy controls. This finding questions the validity of current diagnostic criteria for Tourette syndrome requiring the presence of both motor and vocal tics. In addition, the negligible importance of vocalizations has implications for medical practice, because current recommendations for Tourette syndrome probably also apply to the large group with chronic motor tic disorders.

Abstract
Tics are characterized by sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic movement or vocalization, and are the most common movement disorders in children. Their onset is usually in childhood and tics often will diminish within one year. However, some of the tics can persist and cause various problems such as social embarrassment, physical discomfort, or emotional impairments, which could interfere with daily activities and school performance. Furthermore, tic disorders are frequently associated with comorbid neuropsychiatric symptoms, which can become more problematic than tic symptoms. Unfortunately, misunderstanding and misconceptions of tic disorders still exist among the general population. Understanding tic disorders and their comorbidities is important to deliver appropriate care to patients with tics. Several studies have been conducted to elucidate the clinical course, epidemiology, and pathophysiology of tics, but they are still not well understood. This article aims to provide an overview about tics and tic disorders, and recent findings on tic disorders including history, definition, diagnosis, epidemiology, etiology, diagnostic approach, comorbidities, treatment and management, and differential diagnosis.
