Words matter: The role of family weight talk in anxiety and depression

Family weight talk, in the forms of both family weight teasing and encouragement to diet, has been linked to numerous adverse outcomes, including increased disordered eating, unhealthy weight control behaviors, and body mass index. However, little is known about its role in mental health outcomes, especially for emerging adults. Utilizing structural equation modeling, we examined the role of family weight teasing (FWT) and parental encouragement to diet in anxiety and depression and explored body weight perception as a moderator within a sample of 292 emerging adults. Results indicated that FWT was significantly associated with increased anxiety and depression. No significant relationships were found between parental encouragement to diet and the outcome variables, and no group differences emerged across body weight perception. Findings of this pilot study can be used to inform future research to decrease family weight talk and improve psychosocial outcomes for emerging adults.

Factors associated with prospective changes in weight control intentions among adolescents

INTRODUCTION

The present study examined predictors of negative changes in weight control intentions from before to during the COVID-19 pandemic among adolescents.

METHODS

Participants were Canadian secondary school students enrolled in the COMPASS study and had completed self-report surveys before (T1; 2018/2019 and/or 2019/2020 school year) and during (T2; 2020/2021 and/or 2021/2022) the COVID-19 pandemic (N = 11,869, Mage ± SD = 13.79 years old ± 1.15, 52.89% girls, 45.30% boys, 1.81% gender diverse). Demographic, interpersonal, behavioral, and psychological predictors of weight control intention change from T1 (stay the same weight, not doing anything about weight) to T2 (lose weight, gain weight) were tested using multilevel logistic regressions.

RESULTS

Over one-third (37.0%) of adolescents who reported wanting to stay the same weight at T1 changed their intention to lose or gain weight at T2, as did 28.5% of adolescents who reported not wanting to do anything about their weight at T1. Changing weight control intention from "not doing anything about weight" at T1 to weight gain/loss at T2 was associated with resistance training, emotion dysregulation, bullying, social media use, and gender. Changing weight control intention from "stay the same weight" at T1 to weight gain/loss at T2 was associated with gender, perceived financial comfort, social media use, and flourishing.

CONCLUSIONS

Results highlight the prevalence of maladaptive weight control intention changes among adolescents, and elucidate related behavioral, interpersonal, demographic, and psychological factors. Findings can inform targeted intervention and prevention strategies to disrupt maladaptive changes in weight control intentions among high-risk subgroups.

A systematic review of weight stigma and disordered eating cognitions and behaviors

Weight stigma is persistent across contexts and is associated with disordered eating cognitions and behaviors. This systematic review aimed to examine the existing literature that has explored the relationship between weight stigma and disordered eating cognitions and behaviors. We specifically examined three dimensions of weight stigma - experienced, anticipated, and internalized - and adopted an inclusive conceptualization of outcomes related to disordered eating (including constructs such as binge eating, body dissatisfaction, and other cognitions and behaviors such as dietary restraint, unhealthy weight control behaviors, and drive for thinness). We searched PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Web of Science, Sociological Abstracts, and PsycINFO for English-language, peer-reviewed articles and dissertations with quantitative methodology published through October 2023. The search resulted in 242 articles meeting inclusion criteria. A narrative review found a consistent relationship between greater weight stigma and more disordered eating cognitions and behaviors. Methodological and theoretical limitations are discussed, as are critical avenues for future research and potential clinical implications stemming from this body of research. Given the widespread nature and impact of weight stigma on disordered eating, it is imperative that we intervene to address weight stigma at all levels, from the structural to the intrapersonal.

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder is associated with disordered eating in adolescents

AIM

Attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and disordered eating (DE) are both highly prevalent among adolescents, but their relationship is understudied. This study examines their possible association in a nationally representative sample of adolescents.

METHODS

Participants in the Israeli Youth Health and Nutrition Survey (2015-2016), a cross-sectional, school-based study, completed self-administered questionnaires, including the SCOFF questionnaire, and underwent anthropometric measurements. An affirmative reply to at least two SCOFF items was considered a DE case. Multivariable logistic regression evaluated the ADHD-DE association and the associations between ADHD and individual SCOFF items, controlling for age, sex, socioeconomic status, and body mass index.

RESULTS

Of 4616 participants (12-18 years, 50.2% male), 654 reported an ADHD diagnosis. DE prevalence among ADHD adolescents was significantly higher than the non-ADHD group (50.2% vs. 43.9%, p = 0.003). Controlling for potential covariates, the association between ADHD and DE remained significant (OR = 1.409; 95% CI: 1.170-1.697), as did associations between ADHD and three SCOFF items. No difference in DE prevalence was found between stimulant-treated (n = 287) and untreated (n = 326) adolescents with ADHD.

CONCLUSION

Adolescents with ADHD are more likely to experience DE. As DE can herald an imminent eating disorder, early identification is crucial. Further studies are needed to determine the ADHD-DE relationship's causality.

IMPACT

Disordered eating (DE) and attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are common among adolescents, and significantly affect health and well-being. This study examined the association between ADHD and DE in adolescents using the SCOFF questionnaire. Following adjustment for sociodemographic variables and BMI z-score, ADHD was associated with a 41% increased odds for DE. This study established the association between ADHD and DE, using a well-known questionnaire, in a large, nationally representative sample of adolescents. Monitoring eating behaviors and attitudes among adolescents with ADHD should be a priority, to minimize the risk of developing an eating disorder and its harmful consequences.

Restriction and Pressure to Eat Are Associated Cross-Sectionally, But Not Longitudinally, With BMI z-Score in a Longitudinal Cohort Study of Adolescents

Background: Parents can influence child weight through their use of food parenting practices, although data are limited in adolescents. The purpose of this study was to examine the cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between BMI z-Score (zBMI) and restriction and pressure to eat in adolescents. Methods: Adolescents (12-14 years of age at baseline; N = 236) had their height/weight measured at baseline and 24 months and their parent completed the Child Feeding Questionnaire. Linear regressions examined relationships between food parenting practices and zBMI. Results: Cross-sectionally, restriction was positively associated with zBMI at both baseline (β = 0.28, p < 0.001) and 24 months (β = 0.141, p = 0.039). In contrast, pressure to eat was negatively associated with zBMI at both baseline (β = -0.30, p < 0.001) and 24 months (β = -0.31, p < 0.001). Neither restriction (β = -0.028, p = 0.446) nor pressure to eat (β = -0.027, p = 0.493) at baseline predicted 2-year changes in zBMI. zBMI at baseline did not predict 2-year changes in either restriction (β = -0.003, p = 0.965) or pressure to eat (β = -0.056, p = 0.611). Conclusion: Findings highlight that adolescents perceive moderate levels of restriction and pressure to eat, with levels differing by weight status. These findings suggest that the bidirectional relationships between child weight status and food parenting practices are likely established before adolescence, but persist throughout adolescence. Further longitudinal studies should examine the impact of restriction and pressure to eat early in childhood on weight trajectories into adolescence and adulthood. Clinicaltrials.gov: NCT04027608.

Athlete-specific risk factors for the development of disordered eating behaviors in first-year college athletes

OBJECTIVE

The current study tested whether proposed sport-related risk factors for disordered eating behaviors were associated with increases in disordered eating over first-year college athletes' first four months of collegiate sport participation.

PARTICIPANTS

Participants included a sample of first-year college athletes (N = 59, 45% female) from a Division I National Collegiate Athletics Association (DI) university.

METHOD

This follow-up study tested whether 1) wearing a uniform that emphasizes body concerns, 2) participating in a lean sport, and 3) perceived pressure for thinness from coaches and teammates would lead to increases in weight/shape concerns and disordered eating behaviors over the first four months of collegiate sport participation.

RESULTS

Wearing a uniform that emphasizes body concerns and perceived coach pressure for thinness predicted increases in weight/shape concern. Both teammate and coach pressure for thinness predicted increases in restrained eating behaviors.

CONCLUSION

Findings suggest that there are identifiable, athlete-specific risk factors for the development of disordered eating behaviors among first-year college athletes.

A synthesis of early antecedents of eating behavior and weight status in girls: The legacy of girls' NEEDS project

Dr. Leann Birch, an innovator in the field of children's eating behavior, was the first scientist to synergize the fields of developmental psychology and nutrition science. One of Leann's groundbreaking projects was the Girls' NEEDS Project (GNP), an NIH-funded observational study of the longitudinal development of eating and weight-related behaviors of girls across middle childhood and adolescence. At the time of GNP, obesity prevalence during childhood had roughly doubled during the previous two decades, research interest in dieting had increased as societal expectations of the 'thin ideal' got even thinner, and little was known about how environmental factors such as parenting influenced the development of maladaptive eating and weight-related behaviors. GNP resulted in over 70 publications, covering a range of topics from girls' dietary intake and physical activity to parental influences on girls' eating behavior, thus laying the groundwork for many topics in the obesity, food parenting, and dieting literature today. Therefore, this narrative review aims to summarize and synthesize the literature that resulted from the GNP and provide implications for future work building from this foundation.

Family Factors Affecting the Transition of Children from Normal Weight to Obesity in Mexico

Background: This study is a longitudinal analysis of how the transition of a mother, father, or any other family member to obesity affects the likelihood of children 5-12 years of age becoming adolescents with overweight or obesity during the 7-10-year period between 2002 and the period from 2009 to 2012 in Mexico. Methods: The study used two rounds of the Mexican Family Life Survey, a multipurpose random national survey that collected information on 8441 households, including 38,233 individuals in 2002 and successfully followed up with 3202 children until the period from 2009 to 2012. We used logistic regressions to calculate how family characteristics related to the evolution of body mass indexes among children, controlling for individual, family weight-related characteristics, and the socioeconomic level of the family. Results: The transition of any family member toward obesity is more relevant in determining the transition to obesity among normal-weight children than socioeconomic level of the family and individual characteristics, such as sex, schooling, and occupation. Conclusions: The transition of any family member toward obesity is associated with the transition to obesity among normal-weight children. A family-based approach to obesity prevention has yet to be incorporated into national policies.

Perception of Overall Health, Weight Status, and Gaining Weight in Relationship With Self-Reported BMI Among High School Students

BACKGROUND

Correct perception of weight status and gaining weight are important motivational factors for physical activity among overweight and obese children. However, misperception is common.

OBJECTIVE

The objective of this study is to assess perceptions of overall health, weight status, and weight gain in relation to BMI among high school students.

METHODS

A face-to-face validated survey-based study was conducted among high school students. BMI was calculated based on the self-reported height and weight to compare with perceived weight status based on a question: "Do you consider yourself to be underweight, overweight, about right, or obese?" Participants were asked to rate their health and how much they worry about gaining weight. Descriptive and chi-square tests were used for analysis. The level of significance was 0.05.

RESULTS

The results of this study show female students are more likely to perceive themselves as overweight and worried about gaining weight compared to their male peers. The results also show that a low percentage of male and female students rate their overall health as poor with an overweight BMI.

CONCLUSION

The results of this study provide the framework for understanding the differences in how male and female high school students perceive their health, weight status, and weight gain in relation to BMI. Inaccurate perception of one's weight status increases the risk of being overweight/obese and decreases the likelihood that students will engage in healthy lifestyle behaviors.

Weight Stigma and Mental Health in Youth: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

OBJECTIVE

Over the past two decades, there has been a steady increase in research focused on the association between weight-based stigma and mental health outcomes in children and adolescents. The present study is a systematic review and meta-analysis of the associations between weight stigma and mental health in youth.

METHODS

A systematic search of PubMed, PsychInfo, and Embase databases was conducted in January 2020. Inclusion criteria included the following: (a) examined an association between weight stigma and a mental health outcome, (b) mean sample age <18 (+1 standard deviation) years, (c) written in English, and (d) peer reviewed. Forty eligible articles were identified. The moderating effects of age, sex (percent female), weight status (percent with overweight/obesity), and study quality were examined.

RESULTS

Overall, meta-analytic findings using a random-effects model indicated a statistically significant moderate association between weight stigma and poorer mental health outcomes (r = .32, 95% confidence interval [0.292, 0.347], p < .001). Age and study quality each moderated the association between weight stigma and mental health. Generally, the study quality was fair to poor, with many studies lacking validated measurement of weight stigma.

CONCLUSIONS

Although there was a significant association between weight stigma and mental health in youth, study quality hinders the current body of literature. Furthermore, findings highlight the lack of consideration of internalized weight stigma in child populations, the importance of using validated measures of weight stigma, and the need for increased awareness of how these associations affect populations of diverse backgrounds.

Relationships among Physical Self-Concept, Physical Activity and Mediterranean Diet in Adolescents from the Province of Granada

The aim of the present research was to analyse the relationships among physical self-concept, physical activity engagement and Mediterranean diet adherence in a sample of 1650 secondary school students from the province of Granada. The study design was descriptive-exploratory, cross-sectional and ex post facto. Measurements were taken from a single group. The PSQ, PAQ-A and KIDMED questionnaires were used to measure diet quality. Results showed the presence of a positive relationship among all dimensions of physical self-concept and physical activity engagement, with better outcomes being achieved in this self-perception with increasing engagement in sport. With regard to diet quality and its repercussions on physical self-concept, it was highlighted that the dimensions of the general self-concept, physical attractiveness and strength tended to be more positive as quality improved. In contrast, worse outcomes were produced in those with a low-quality diet. In this way, it was deemed necessary to continue investigating psychosocial factors with the aim of clarifying the relationships with psychological factors and health indicators. This would enable the development of prevention and intervention programs focused on promoting wellbeing in adolescents.

Addressing psychosocial health in the treatment and care of adolescents with obesity

Obesity affects 158 million youth worldwide and is associated with psychosocial comorbidity. This review describes weight management options utilized by adolescents, including both self-directed weight loss and medically supervised obesity treatment interventions, and associated psychosocial impacts. A majority of adolescents with obesity attempt to manage weight on their own, primarily through attempting weight loss, sometimes with supplement use. Approaches such as these are associated with a degree of risk, disordered eating behaviors, and further weight gain. In contrast, medically supervised multicomponent interventions are associated with improved psychosocial health, including quality of life, self-esteem, and body image, and reduced symptoms of depression, anxiety, and eating disorders. Few studies utilizing antiobesity pharmacotherapy have reported psychosocial outcomes, and trials of bariatric surgery show some early improvements with a need for sustained psychological support following surgery. Greater access to medically supervised treatment services is required to facilitate obesity care for adolescents. Early data on psychosocial health and obesity treatment offer promising outcomes; however, larger randomized controlled trials and longer-term data are needed. Future research should include both physiological and psychosocial outcomes to assess impact of interventions on the holistic health of adolescents with obesity.

Use of latent class analysis as a method of assessing the physical activity level, sedentary behavior and nutritional habit in the adolescents' lifestyle: A scoping review

BACKGROUND

Currently, adolescents' lifestyle is commonly characterized by physical inactivity, sedentary behavior, and inappropriate eating habits in general. A person-oriented approach as Latent Class Analysis (LCA) can offer more insight than a variable-centered approach when investigating lifestyle practices, habits, and behaviors of adolescent population.

OBJECTIVE

The aim of the present study was to assess which variables are mostly used to represent the physical activity level, sedentary behavior SB) and nutritional habit in the adolescents' lifestyle in studies that used the LCA.

DESIGN

Scoping review.

METHODS

The study was a performed in accordance with the proposed criteria for systematic reviews and meta-analyses-Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses and registered in PROSPERO (CRD42018108444). The original articles were searched in MEDLINE/PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and SPORTdiscus. The Quality Assessment Tool analyzed the risk of bias of the included studies.

RESULTS

30 original articles were selected. The physical activity level (28 studies), SB and nutritional habits (18 studies) were the most common variable used to evaluate the adolescent's lifestyle by LCA model. Specifically, physical inactivity and high SB were the manifest variables with higher frequency in the negative latent classes (LCs) in adolescent girls. On the other hand, physical exercises and sports were activities more commonly labeled as positive LCs.

CONCLUSIONS

The LCA models of the most of selected studies showed that physical inactivity, high SB were the most common in the LCs with negative characteristics of the adolescents' lifestyle. Better understanding the results of analyzes of clusters of multivariate behaviors such as the LCA can help to create more effective strategies that can make the lifestyle of adolescents healthier.

Assessing the impact of an educational intervention program based on the theory of planned behavior on the nutritional behaviors of adolescents and young adults with PCOS in Iran: a field trial study

BACKGROUND

Polycystic ovary syndrome is the most common endocrine disorder among adolescents and adults. Given the importance of healthy nutritional behaviors in management of this disease, the present study was conducted to determine the impact of an educational intervention program based on the theory of planned behavior on the nutritional behaviors of adolescents and young adults with polycystic ovary syndrome.

METHODS

In this field trial study, 72 participants aged between 15 and 21 years old from four gynecology clinics in Shiraz, Iran, were assigned into the intervention and control groups. Educational intervention program was implemented based on the theory of planned behavior over 4 sessions during two weeks. The data collection tools were researcher-made questionnaires of demographic information, knowledge assessment, and assessment of theory of planned behavior constructs, as well as a questionnaire for assessing consumption of food groups, fast food, and snacks. The data were collected at two stages (once at baseline and once three months after the intervention), and then the changes in knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, the perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and nutritional behavior were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistical methods (t-test, Chi-square, Mann- Whitney U, and Wilcoxon tests; as well as one- way ANOVA, repeated measures ANOVA, and ANCOVA, respectively).

RESULTS

Statistically significant increases were observed in the mean scores of knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, the perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and nutritional behavior in the intervention group by passing three months from the intervention compared to the scores before the intervention (P < 0.001). However, these differences were not statistically significant in the control group (P > 0.05). Moreover, the mean scores of knowledge, attitude, subjective norms, perceived behavioral control, behavioral intention, and nutritional behavior had no statistically significant difference before the intervention between the two groups; however, this was statistically significant by passing three months from the intervention (P < 0.001).

CONCLUSION

Considering the effect of an educational intervention program based on the theory of planned behavior on creating healthy nutritional behaviors in adolescents and young adults with polycystic ovary syndrome, it is recommended to use it in order to improve the nutritional health of them.

"Mane"taining: How Black Adolescent Girls Maintain Their Cultural Hair Practices in Physical Education Class

BACKGROUND

Although hair has been found to be a barrier to physical activity (PA) among adult black women, the research exploring this phenomenon among black adolescent girls is deficient. This presents a concern because physical inactivity can lead to obesity and a host of comorbidities. This qualitative study explores hair experiences of black adolescent girls and how they maintain their cultural hair practices in hopes of promoting PA among this at-risk population.

METHODS

Focus groups were conducted for 37 black adolescent girls attending a public high school in Newark, New Jersey.

RESULTS

The participants reported increasing hair knowledge via social media, sociocultural influences of family and culture, and the driving force of their peer group, a concept identified in the focus groups as Hair IQ (intelligence quotient). Hair IQ helped the participants learn how to maintain their hair practices before and after PA. These factors combined to develop a framework described as the "Mane"taining model.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest the "Mane"taining model may provide pathways for engaging in PA for this population and serve as an example for adult black women who face similar barriers to PA.

Weight control intentions and mental health among Canadian adolescents: a gender-based analysis of students in the COMPASS study

INTRODUCTION

Little is known about gender differences in associations between weight control intentions and mental health in adolescents. Our objective was to examine these associations in a large sample of adolescent girls and boys.

METHODS

Using data from Year 6 (2017-18) of the COMPASS study (n = 57 324), we performed a series of multivariable linear regressions to examine whether weight control intentions (gain, lose, stay the same, no intention) were associated with depression, anxiety and self-concept, while adjusting for relevant covariates including body mass index. Models were stratified by self-reported gender.

RESULTS

Compared to those with no intentions, girls who intended to lose weight reported higher symptoms of depression (B = 0.52, p < 0.001) and anxiety (B = 0.41, p < 0.001) and poorer self-concept (B = 2.06, p < 0.001). Girls who intended to gain weight also reported higher symptoms of depression (B = 0.54, p < 0.001), anxiety (B = 0.50, p < 0.001) and self-concept (B = 1.25, p < 0.001). Boys who intended to lose weight reported greater symptoms of depression (B = 0.26, p < 0.001) and anxiety (B = 0.33, p < 0.001) and poor self-concept (B = 1.10, p < 0.001). In boys, weight-gain intentions were associated with greater symptoms of anxiety (B = 0.17, p < 0.05), but not depression or self-concept.

CONCLUSION

Intentions to gain or lose weight were associated with symptoms of mental disorder and poor self-concept in our large sample of adolescents, and these relationships differed in boys and girls. These findings have important implications for school-based programs promoting healthy weight and body image.

Obesity as a "self-regulated epidemic": coverage of obesity in Chinese newspapers

OBJECTIVE

The aim of this study was to investigate how obesity was covered in Chinese newspapers from 1999 to 2018, demonstrating the trends and the characteristics of obesity-related news.

METHODS

Content analysis was conducted to analyze a total of 358 news articles spanning two decades (1999-2018). We explored how Chinese newspapers portrayed obesity in terms of the evidence/sources cited in articles, its impacts, drivers/causes, and solutions; and how such portrayals have evolved over time. We further compared the articles across different types of newspapers (government-sponsored vs. commercial), two subpopulations (children vs. adults), and periods of time (1999-2008 vs. 2009-2018).

RESULTS

Results showed that medical experts' interviews and statistics were the two most cited types of evidence in the articles. When discussing causes and solutions of obesity, factors pertaining to personal lifestyles were mentioned most frequently. Compared to psychological and social impacts, physical health risk was stressed more often. Compared with commercial newspapers, government-funded newspapers mentioned societal drivers of obesity and suggested reforming schools more frequently. Such differences were also found between coverage of child obesity and adult obesity. Our research, furthermore, revealed significant differences of media coverage of obesity across the two decades.

CONCLUSIONS

Our findings indicate that obesity was generally depicted as a "self-regulated epidemic" in Chinese newspapers. Although the revealed causes and consequences of obesity are evidently related to individual factors, more attention should be directed to the roles that the government, media, and the society can play in preventing obesity and mitigating related social/economic burden.

Association between selected individual and environmental characteristics in relation to health behavior of Brazilian adolescents

OBJECTIVE

The study investigates the evolution of healthy behaviors (healthy eating and regular physical activity) in Brazilian adolescents during 2012 and 2015, and its associations with self-assessment of body weight and adoption of weight control attitudes, in the context of diverse household features, school environments, and regional characteristics.

METHODS

Two cross-sectional surveys of Brazilian adolescents attending the ninth grade in 2012 and 2015 were gathered comprising a national sample. Data from 209,601 completed surveys were analyzed using robust error estimates of ordinary least squares regressions.

RESULTS

Results showed that there was a decrease in the frequency of healthy foods consumption and recommended physical activity level between 2012 and 2015. The regression analyses revealed that healthy eating and physical activity were significantly higher for adolescents with normal weight perception (i.e., did not perceive themselves to have either low or excess body weight) and for adolescents who were male, were members of middle socioeconomic stratum families, and had mothers with college degrees. In addition, healthy eating was significantly higher for adolescents who did not wish to lose weight, did not watch TV while eating, went to public schools, and lived with both parents. Ethnic differences varied based on region, with healthy eating being significantly higher among black/mulato/indigenous adolescents in the South and Southeast regions, but significantly higher among white/yellow adolescents in the North region.

CONCLUSIONS

Ethnic and gender-related differences were identified in health behaviors and attitudes towards weight control of Brazilian adolescents. Findings indicate the relevance of individual characteristics combined with the influence of social networks for the adoption of healthy behaviors among adolescent students.

Associations between socioeconomic and family determinants and weight-control behaviours among adolescents

OBJECTIVES

Family factors may play a role in adolescents' weight-control behaviours (WCB), and economic determinants strongly affect adolescents' health in terms of unhealthy weight-control behaviours (UWCB). This study examines the nexus of socioeconomic status, perceived family wealth, and number of employed parents and Israeli adolescents' WCB and asks whether family-related variables mediate WCB.

METHODS

Data from the 2014 Israeli Health Behaviour in School-Aged Children study are analysed using structural equation modelling.

RESULTS

High family affluence and high perceived family wealth are negatively associated with UWCB. Having two employed parents related to lower levels of UWCB. Family-related variables such as family communication and support and parental monitoring mitigate UWCB. Family meals have a significantly positive effect on healthy weight-control behaviour (HWCB) and a significantly negative impact on unhealthy weight-control activities.

CONCLUSIONS

The findings suggest that economic factors such as socioeconomic status and number of employed parents should be taken into account in long-term weight-control practice. The combination of WCB and family meals is the most effective method for adolescents' healthy weight-control behaviour.

The effects of parental and peer factors on psychiatric symptoms in adolescents with obesity

PURPOSE

The aim of this study was to examine the relationships among psychiatric symptoms, effect of beliefs and attitudes of parents about obese people and victimization or bullying in obese adolescents.

METHODS

The study group included 110 obese or overweight adolescents and 55 adolescents of normal weight as the control group. All adolescents completed the Brief Symptom Inventory (BSI) and Traditional Bullying Scale. The parents completed the Attitudes Toward Obese Persons (ATOP) Scale and Beliefs About Obese Persons (BAOP) Scale.

RESULTS

The BSI subscale scores for depression were significantly higher in the study group. There was no significant relationship found between psychiatric symptoms of obese or overweight adolescents and the ATOP and BAOP scores of parents. When victims, bullies/victims, bullies and those not included in any group among obese or overweight adolescents were examined, psychiatric symptoms of victims and bullies/victims were significantly higher.

CONCLUSIONS

The results of this study suggest that the clinical treatment of obesity is not just a matter of diet and exercise but additionally dealing with issues of depression and anxiety. A very satisfactory result of the study was that parents of obese or overweight adolescents did not show an increased weight bias. This study has also shown the association between negative social and psychological ramifications, as the study group was more likely to be the victims and perpetrators of bullying behaviors than their normal-weight peers.

Weight Reduction Behaviors Among European Adolescents-Changes From 2001/2002 to 2017/2018

PURPOSE

The purpose of this study was to analyze changes in the prevalence of weight reduction behaviors (WRBs) among European adolescents from 26 countries between 2001/2002 and 2017/2018. The impact of the perception of body weight on WLB was also analyzed, with particular attention being paid to overestimation.

METHODS

The data of 639,194 European adolescents aged 11, 13, and 15 years who participated in the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children survey were analyzed. Age-standardized prevalence rates of WRB were estimated separately by survey round and gender for each country, using the overall 2017/2018 Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study population as the standard. Multivariate logistic regression analyses were used to assess WRB trends over time, adjusted for survey year, body mass index, body weight misperception, and family affluence and stratified by gender and age.

RESULTS

In the 26 countries examined, the overall age-adjusted prevalence rates of WRB were 10.2% among boys and 18.0% among girls. The prevalence of WRB was higher for girls, but in the more recent surveys, gender differences in WRB decreased. There was a significant increase in the percentage of WRB among boys in most countries. Among girls, most countries did not experience significant changes. Increases in body mass index and overestimation of body weight were significant factors increasing the risk of WRB in both genders.

CONCLUSIONS

The change in the prevalence of WRB by gender warrants greater attention from researchers and practitioners alike.

Influencias sociales en un modelo de insatisfacción corporal, preocupación por el peso y malestar corporal en mujeres mexicanas

El objetivo del presente estudio fue analizar el grado explicativo de las variables “influencia de la publicidad”, “mensajes verbales”, “modelos sociales” y “situaciones sociales” frente a la insatisfacción corporal, la preocupación por el peso y el malestar corporal en una muestra seleccionada por conveniencia de 206 mujeres mexicanas con promedio de edad de 22.12 años (DT = 4.21). Específicamente, se utilizó un modelamiento de ecuaciones estructurales para identificar los efectos directos e indirectos de las variables independientes sobre las dependientes en tres modelos hipotéticos propuestos, y como resultados se encontró que el conjunto de variables tuvo un valor explicativo de 79 % para el modelo planteado para la insatisfacción corporal, con buenos indicadores de bondad de ajuste (χ2/gl = .877; GFI = .982; CFI = .978; AGFI = .980; SRMR = .068; RMSEA = .079); de 62 % para el modelo de preocupación por el peso, con una adecuada bondad de ajuste (χ2/gl = 1.556; GFI = .981; CFI = .975; AGFI = .978; SRMR = .068; RMSEA = .080); y de 72 % para el modelo de malestar corporal, con buenos valores de bondad de ajuste (χ2/gl = .173; GFI = .976; CFI = .969; AGFI = .972; SRMR = .062; RMSEA = .072). Se concluye que las influencias sociales tienen un impacto significativo en la imagen corporal y que los mensajes verbales presentan un mayor impacto en las variables estudiadas.

Frequency of Trying to Lose Weight and Its Association with Children's Weight Perception and Dietary Intake (NHANES 2011-2012)

Weight loss practices and frequency among children and adolescents can impact overall diet quality. We used cross-sectional U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey data (NHANES) 2011-2012 from 1303 children and adolescents (8-15 years) to examine associations between frequency of trying to lose weight (never vs. sometimes/a lot) and sociodemographic characteristics, self-perception of weight, and dietary intake. A greater frequency of trying to lose weight was reported by participants with overweight/obesity, those from households with lower annual income and those who perceived they were overweight or obese compared to their counterparts. A high proportion of participants with overweight and obesity considered themselves to be "about the right weight" (76.7 and 42.8%, respectively). Intake data based on one 24-h dietary recall were examined using multivariable regression models adjusted for child and parent/family characteristics. In adjusted analyses, energy and total fat intakes were lower among those trying to lose weight compared to those never trying to lose weight. Intakes of cholesterol, sodium, and refined grains were not different by frequency of trying to lose weight (all p = 0.059-0.074). Weight loss efforts may be related to better nutritional profiles for some children and adolescents.

Weight-based victimization, eating behaviors, and weight-related health in Sexual and Gender Minority Adolescents

Weight-based victimization (WBV) is a common form of bullying associated with maladaptive eating, and poor weight-related health. Although sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth experience a number of eating and weight-related health disparities, the link between WBV and these outcomes has not been investigated in this vulnerable population. Data came from the LGBTQ Teen Study, a national survey of SGM adolescents. Participants provided data to assess body mass index (BMI), WBV, sexual identity, gender identity, dieting, binge eating, eating to cope with stress, weight control behaviors, exercise, and stress (N = 9679). The sample was 66% White, with a mean age of 15.6 years; 58.5% had healthy weight, and 37.2% had overweight or obesity. Over half of participants reported WBV from family members and peers. WBV from family members was associated with maladaptive eating (i.e., binge-eating, unhealthy weight-control behaviors), dieting, and poor weight-related health (i.e., stress, exercise avoidance, less physical activity and poorer sleep); relationships remained significant after accounting for participants' age, BMI percentile for age and sex, race, gender identity, and sexual identity. Higher frequency of WBV at school, but not history of peer weight-based victimization, was associated with more maladaptive eating, dieting, and poorer weight-related health on all outcomes except physical activity. This is the first large-scale study that examined links between WBV, maladaptive eating behaviors, and weight-related health in SGM adolescents. These results suggest the need for increased awareness that WBV may play a role in maladaptive eating, and weight-related health of SGM youth, and may contribute to both elevated levels of eating disorders and obesity in this population.

Weight-based victimization among sexual and gender minority adolescents: Implications for substance use and mental health

OBJECTIVE

Weight-based victimization (WBV) involves being the target of intentional physical, verbal, or psychological harm because of one's body weight. Youth experience harmful health consequences from WBV, but this literature has neglected sexual and gender minority (SGM) youth, despite their high rates of overweight and obesity, and mental health problems. The present study assessed health behaviors (substance use), self-rated health, perceived control over stressors, depressive symptoms and self-esteem as a function of WBV in a large, national sample of LGBTQ (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer) adolescents.

METHOD

Participants (N = 9,838, M_age = 15.6 years, SD = 1.26) completed a web-based battery of questionnaires examining victimization, health, family, and school experiences of LGBTQ adolescents in the United States.

RESULTS

WBV was associated with increased odds of alcohol use, binge drinking, marijuana use, and cigarette use, independent of adolescents' age, race, body mass index (BMI), sexual identity, gender identity, caregiver education, and U.S. region. Frequency of WBV at school and weight teasing from family members were both consistently associated with lower self-rated health, lower perceived control over stressors, lower self-esteem, and higher depressive symptom scores.

CONCLUSIONS

These findings present the first large-scale evidence of the relationship between WBV and adverse health behaviors in SGM youth. Sexual minority youth who experience WBV, especially from family members, may be vulnerable to adverse health behaviors and low perceived health, regardless of their BMI. These findings highlight the importance of considering WBV when examining health behaviors in LGBTQ youth, and increased awareness of these issues among health care professionals. The Influence of Parental Dieting Behavior on Child Dieting Behavior and Weight Status

PURPOSE OF REVIEW

To explore the relationship that parental dieting behavior (e.g., dieting, encouragement to diet, weight-teasing) has on child dieting behavior and weight status.

RECENT FINDINGS

Encouragement to diet and weight-teasing are both strong predictors of child dieting behavior in both childhood and adolescence. The impact of parent modeling of dieting behavior on child dieting behavior is mixed, but there is enough evidence to suggest that modeling is more impactful on daughters than sons and when parents are modeling unhealthy and extreme weight control behaviors (e.g., skipping meals). Parental dieting, both via modeling and increased use of encouragement to diet and weight-teasing, is associated with negative child eating and weight outcomes. Parental use of direct communication surrounding weight appears to be a more salient risk factor than parental modeling of dieting behavior. Future work is needed to develop strategies for parents to lower their child's risk of dieting.

Evaluation of lifestyle of female adolescents through latent class analysis approach

BACKGROUND

Lack of regular physical activity, high sedentary behavior and presence of unbalanced alimentary practices are attitudes associated with an inadequate lifestyle among female adolescents.

OBJECTIVE

to assess the lifestyle of female adolescents based on measurements of behavioral variables.

METHODS

Cross-sectional study with 405 female adolescents between 14 and 19 years old, resident and attending public schools in Viçosa (state of Minas Gerais). Their lifestyle was analyzed by the Physical Activity Recall, number of steps, screen time (ST), cellphone time (CT), sitting time, food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), and alcohol and tobacco consumption. With multiple correspondence analysis it was possible to observe dispersion and approximation of the variables' categories. Latent class analysis (LCA) was used for modeling the "lifestyle" variable, having been conducted in the poLCA (Polychromous Variable Latent Class Analysis) package of the R statistical software.

RESULTS

The mean age was 15.92 ± 1.27 years. Most of the adolescents were considered physically inactive (78%) and with low number of steps (82.57%); 41.45% reported not performing Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activities (MVPA) adequately. Sedentary behavior was found high when assessing ST (72.90%) and CT (65.31%). It was found the best fitted latent class model for the lifestyle (p-G2 = 0.055, p-χ2 = 0.066) featured three latent classes and one covariate (alcohol): Class 1, 'Inactive and Sedentary' (γ = 77.5%); Class 2, 'Inactive and Non-sedentary lifestyle (γ=16.31%); and Class 3, 'Active and sedentary' (γ=6.19%). Female adolescents that had 'never consumed alcohol' were 2.26 times as likely (log OR = 0.8174; p = 0.033) to belong to class 3 (Active & Sedentary lifestyle) than to class 1 (Inactive & Sedentary lifestyle).

CONCLUSION

Latent class analysis model with five manifest variable (MVPA, number of steps, ST, sitting time and number of meals) and alcohol consumption like covariate showed itself to be an accurate and objective method in the assessment of female adolescents' lifestyle. Female adolescents that had 'never consumed alcohol' were more as likely to belong to class 'Active & Sedentary lifestyle' than to class Inactive & Sedentary lifestyle. An inactive and sedentary lifestyle is coupled to other unhealthy behaviors during adolescence, possibly carrying over into adult life.

Obesity and eating disorders in integrative prevention programmes for adolescents: protocol for a systematic review and meta-analysis

INTRODUCTION

Obesity and eating disorders are public health problems that have lifelong financial and personal costs and common risk factors, for example, body dissatisfaction, weight teasing and disordered eating. Obesity prevention interventions might lead to the development of an eating disorder since focusing on weight may contribute to excessive concern with diet and weight. Therefore, the proposed research will assess whether integrating obesity and eating disorder prevention procedures ('integrated approach') do better than single approach interventions in preventing obesity among adolescents, and if integrated approaches influence weight-related outcomes.

METHODS AND ANALYSIS

Integrated obesity and eating disorder prevention interventions will be identified. Randomised controlled trials and quasi-experimental trials reporting data on adolescents ranging from 10 to 19 years of age from both sexes will be included. Outcomes of interest include body composition, unhealthy weight control behaviours and body satisfaction measurements. MEDLINE/PubMed, PsycINFO, Web of Science and SciELO will be searched. Data will be extracted independently by two reviewers using a standardised data extraction form. Trial quality will be assessed using the Cochrane Collaboration criteria. The effects of integrated versus single approach intervention studies will be compared using systematic review procedures. If an adequate number of studies report data on integrated interventions among similar populations (k>5), a meta-analysis with random effects will be conducted. Sensitivity analyses and meta-regression will be performed only if between-study heterogeneity is high (I² ≥75%).

ETHICS AND DISSEMINATION

Ethics approval will not be required as this is a systematic review of published studies. The findings will be disseminated through conference presentations and peer-reviewed journals.
