Gamma Radiation-Mediated Synthesis of Antimicrobial Polyurethane Foam/Silver Nanoparticles

Nosocomial infections represent a major threat within healthcare systems worldwide, underscoring the critical need for materials with antimicrobial properties. This study presents the development of polyurethane foam embedded with silver nanoparticles (PUF/AgNPs) using a rapid, eco-friendly, in situ radiochemical synthesis method. The nanocomposites were characterized by UV-vis and FTIR spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy coupled with energy dispersive X-ray technique (SEM/EDX), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), dynamic mechanical analysis (DMA), tensile and compression strengths, antimicrobial activity, and foam toxicity tests. The resulting PUF/AgNPs demonstrated prolonged stability (over 12 months) and good dispersion of AgNPs. Also, the samples presented higher levels of hardness compared to samples without AgNPs (deformation of 1682 µm for V1 vs. 4307 µm for V0, under a 5 N force), tensile and compression strength of 1.80 MPa and 0.34 Mpa, respectively. Importantly, they exhibited potent antimicrobial activity against a broad range of bacteria (including Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, and Enterococcus faecalis) and a fungal mixture (no fungal growth on the sample surface was observed after 28 days of exposure). Furthermore, these materials were non-toxic to human keratinocytes, which kept their specific morphology after 24 h of incubation, highlighting their potential for safe use in biomedical applications. We envision promising applications for PUF/AgNPs in hospital bed mattresses and antimicrobial mats, offering a practical strategy to reduce nosocomial infections and enhance patient safety within healthcare facilities.

Monodisperse Ag, Au Nanoparticles via Solvated Metal Atom Dispersion and Digestive Ripening in Ionic Liquid

Digestive ripening (DR) is a postsynthetic protocol for the transformation of a colloid consisting of polydisperse metal nanoparticles (NPs) into a colloid composed of nearly monodisperse metal nanoparticles. This process is brought about by the digestive ripening agent, typically an organic ligand with a long alkyl chain at one end and a functional group at the other, at the boiling point of the solvent in which it is carried out, requiring long periods of time. In this work, digestive ripening of polydisperse Ag and Au nanoparticles brought about by ionic liquids (ILs) under very mild conditions (∼273 K, ∼30 min) to obtain nearly monodisperse nanoparticles has been demonstrated. Herein, the ionic liquid plays a dual role, as a digestive ripening and a stabilizing agent for the nanoparticles. Ionic liquid-assisted digestive ripening under such mild temperatures and short period of time has hitherto not been reported.

Microwave Encounters Ionic Liquid: Synergistic Mechanism, Synthesis and Emerging Applications

Progress in microwave (MW) energy application technology has stimulated remarkable advances in manufacturing and high-quality applications of ionic liquids (ILs) that are generally used as novel media in chemical engineering. This Review focuses on an emerging technology via the combination of MW energy and the usage of ILs, termed microwave-assisted ionic liquid (MAIL) technology. In comparison to conventional routes that rely on heat transfer through media, the contactless and unique MW heating exploits the electromagnetic wave-ions interactions to deliver energy to IL molecules, accelerating the process of material synthesis, catalytic reactions, and so on. In addition to the inherent advantages of ILs, including outstanding solubility, and well-tuned thermophysical properties, MAIL technology has exhibited great potential in process intensification to meet the requirement of efficient, economic chemical production. Here we start with an introduction to principles of MW heating, highlighting fundamental mechanisms of MW induced process intensification based on ILs. Next, the synergies of MW energy and ILs employed in materials synthesis, as well as their merits, are documented. The emerging applications of MAIL technologies are summarized in the next sections, involving tumor therapy, organic catalysis, separations, and bioconversions. Finally, the current challenges and future opportunities of this emerging technology are discussed.

Imidazolium-Based Ionic Liquid-Assisted Silver Nanoparticles and Their Antibacterial Activity: Experimental and Density Functional Theory Studies

The exclusive properties of ionic liquids (ILs) offer various opportunities to develop advanced materials with appreciable therapeutic applications. Imidazolium-based ILs have been frequently used as reaction media and stabilizers for the development and surface functionalization of noble metal nanoparticles (NPs). This study reports the citrate-mediated reduction of silver ions in three different ILs, that is, 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium methyl sulfate ([EMIM][MS]), 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium trifluoromethanesulfonate ([BMIM][OTf]), and 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide ([BMIM][TFSI]). The resulting Ag-ILs NPs were characterized using many analytical techniques, including UV-visible spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), scanning electron microscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction (XRD). DLS and XRD characterization revealed the negatively charged Ag-[EMIM][MS] NPs, Ag-[BMIM][OTf] NPs, and Ag-[BMIM][TFSI] NPs with mean hydrodynamic sizes of 278, 316, and 279 nm, respectively, and a face-centered cubic structure. These hybrid nanomaterials were subjected to in vitro antibacterial screening against three bacterial strains. The Ag-[BMIM][OTf] NPs exhibited significant activities against Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, and Enterobacter cloacae. The lowest inhibition concentration of 62.5 μg/mL was recorded against E. coli using Ag-[EMIM][MS] and Ag-[BMIM][OTf] NPs. Further, the density functional theory calculations carried out on the computed Ag-ILs in the gas phase and water showed relatively stable systems. Ag-[BMIM][TFSI] exhibited the lowest Gibbs free energy change of -34.41 kcal/mol. The value of the global electrophilicity index (ω = 0.1865 eV) for the Ag-[BMIM][OTf] correlated with its good antibacterial activity.

Thermally induced dimensionality changes in derivatives of a "super stable" Blatter radical

Two derivatives of a "super stable" Blatter radical (1,3-diphenyl-7-trifluoromethyl-1,4-dihydrobenzo[e][1,2,4]triazin-4-yl) with N(1)-Ar = 2-CF3C6H4 and 2-MeOC6H4 were obtained and investigated using XRD and SQUID magnetometry methods. The investigation revealed strong antiferromagnetic interactions in both radicals, which are described using the Hatfield model. For the latter radical, an abrupt and reversible change in the χ(T) plot was observed at 29 K. It was ascribed to a structural transition, consistent with a two-dimensional to one-dimensional thermally activated crossover, as supported by specific heat measurements (CvHvs. T). It is suggested that the transition is related to an order-disorder transition of the CF3 group, which is corroborated using XRD structural analysis.

Intercalated chitosan-ionic liquid ionogel in SnO nanoplate: band gap narrow and adsorption-photodegradation process

Ionogels are a category of hybrid material containing ionic liquid stabilized by polymeric network. These composites have some applications in solid-state, energy storage devices and environmental studies. In this research, chitosan (CS), ethyl pyridinium iodide ionic liquid (IL), and ionogel (IG) consisting of chitosan and ionic liquid were used in the preparation of a SnO nanoplate (SnO-IL, SnO-CS and SnO-IG). For the preparation of the ethyl pyridinium iodide, a mixture of pyridine and iodoethane (1: 2 molar ratio) was refluxed for 24 hours. The ionogel was formed using ethyl pyridinium iodide ionic liquid in chitosan that was dissolved in acetic acid (1 % v/v). By increasing NH₃∙H₂O, the pH of the ionogel reached 7-8. Then, the resultant IG was mixed with SnO in an ultrasonic bath for 1 h. The microstructure of the ionogel was involved as assembled unit via π-π, electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions to be three-dimensional networks. The intercalated ionic liquid and chitosan influenced the stability of the SnO nanoplates and improved band gap values. When chitosan was contained as the interlayer space of the SnO nanostructure, the resulting biocomposite formed a well-ordered flower-like SnO structure. These hybrid material structures were characterized by FT-IR, XRD, SEM, TGA, DSC, BET, and DRS techniques. The changes in the band gap values for photocatalysis applications were investigated. In the case of SnO, SnO-IL, SnO-CS, and SnO-IG, the band gap energy was 3.9, 3.6, 3.2, and 2.8 eV, respectively. The dye removal efficiency of SnO-IG was 98.5, 98.8, 97.9, and 98.4 % via the second-order kinetic model for Reactive Red 141, Reactive Red 195, Reactive Red 198, and Reactive Yellow 18, respectively. The maximum adsorption capacity of SnO-IG was 540.5, 584.7, 1501.5, and 1100.1 mg/g for Red 141, Red 195, Red 198, and Yellow 18 dyes, respectively. Also, an acceptable result (96.47 % dye removal) was obtained with the prepared SnO-IG biocomposite for dye removal from textile wastewater.

Confined Silver Nanoparticles in Ionic Liquid Films

This work reports the formation of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) by sputter deposition in thin films of three different ionic liquids (ILs) with the same anion (bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) and cation (imidazolium), but with different alkyl chain lengths and symmetries in the cationic moiety ([C4C1im][NTf2], [C2C2im][NTf2], and [C5C5im][NTf2]). Ionic liquid (IL) films in the form of microdroplets with different thicknesses (200 to 800 monolayers) were obtained through vacuum thermal evaporation onto glass substrates coated with indium tin oxide (ITO). The sputtering process of the Ag onto the ILs when conducted simultaneously with argon plasma promoted the coalescence of the ILs’ droplets and the formation, incorporation, and stabilization of the metallic nanoparticles in the coalesced IL films. The formation/stabilization of the AgNPs in the IL films was confirmed using high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and UV-Vis spectroscopy. It was found that the IL films with larger thicknesses (600 and 800 monolayers) were better media for the formation of AgNPs. Among the ILs used, [C5C5im][NTf2] was found to be particularly promising for the stabilization of AgNPs. The use of larger IL droplets as capture media was found to promote a better stabilization of the AgNPs, thereby reducing their tendency to aggregate.

"Super stable" Blatter radicals through ArLi addition: surprising chemistry of 7-(trifluoromethyl)benzo[e][1,2,4]triazine

Addition of PhLi to 7-(CF₃)benzo[e][1,2,4]triazine at -78 °C gives the "super stable" Blatter radical in high yields, while above -5 °C two additional products are formed. XRD analysis revealed the formation of a "trimer" and a benzo[f][1,2,4]triazepine via a novel mechanism. The latter is formed from the anion generated from the isolated radical, which suggests its instability in organic batteries.

Tunable Aryl Alkyl Ionic Liquid Supported Synthesis of Platinum Nanoparticles and Their Catalytic Activity in the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction and in Hydrosilylation

Tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids (TAAILs) are ionic liquids (ILs) with a 1-aryl-3-alkylimidazolium cation having differently substituted aryl groups. Herein, nine TAAILs with the bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion are utilized in combination with and without ethylene glycol (EG) as reaction media for the rapid microwave synthesis of platinum nanoparticles (Pt-NPs). TAAILs allow the synthesis of small NPs and are efficient solvents for microwave absorption. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that small primary NPs with sizes of 2 nm to 5 nm are obtained in TAAILs and EG/TAAIL mixtures. The Pt-NPs feature excellent activity as electrocatalysts in the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) under acidic conditions, with an overpotential at a current density of 10 mA cm^-2 as low as 32 mV vs the reversible hydrogen electrode (RHE), which is significantly lower than the standard Pt/C 20% with 42 mV. Pt-NPs obtained in TAAILs also achieved quantitative conversion in the hydrosilylation reaction of phenylacetylene with triethylsilane after just 5 min at 200 °C.

Cellulose nanocrystals isolated from corn leaf: straightforward immobilization of silver nanoparticles as a reduction catalyst

As the most abundant natural biopolymer on earth, celluloses have long-term emerged as a capable platform for diverse purposes. In the context of metal nanoparticles applied to catalysis, the alternatives to traditional catalyst supports by using biomass-derived renewable materials, likely nanocelluloses, have been paid a great effort, in spite of being less exploited. In this study, cellulose nanocrystals were isolated from corn leaf via chemical treatment involving alkalizing, bleaching and acid hydrolysis. The crystallinity of obtained cellulose was evaluated in each step, focusing on the effects of reactant concentration and reaction time. Cellulose nanocrystals were characterized by powder X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), evidencing the presence of cellulose nanospheres (crystallinity index of 67.3% in comparison with 38.4% from untreated raw material) in the size range of 50 nm. Without using any additional surfactants or stabilizers, silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) well-dispersed on the surface of cellulose nanocrystals (silver content of 5.1 wt%) could be obtained by a simple chemical reduction using NaBH4 at room temperature. The catalytic activity was evaluated in the selective reductions of 4-nitrophenol towards 4-aminophenol and methyl orange towards aromatic amine derivatives in water at room temperature. The effects of catalyst amount and reaction time were also studied in both reduction processes, showing near-quantitative conversions within 5 minutes and obeying the pseudo-first-order kinetics, with the apparent kinetic rate constants of 8.9 × 10-3 s-1 (4-nitrophenol) and 13.6 × 10-3 s-1 (methyl orange). The chemical structure of the catalytic system was found to be highly stable during reaction and no metal leaching was detected in reaction medium, evidencing adaptability of cellulose nanocrystals in immobilizing noble metal nanoparticles.

Sweet, Sugar-Coated Hierarchical Platinum Nanostructures for Easy Support, Heterogenization and Separation

Metal nanoparticles are increasingly gaining interest in the field of heterogeneous catalysis. Here, we present a novel strategy for synthesizing sugar-coated platinum nanostructures (SC-Pt-NS) from the carbohydrates sucrose and D(-)-fructose. In the synthesis from a mixture of H2PtCl6·6H2O, the carbohydrate in an ionic liquid (IL) yielded primary particles of a homogeneous average size of ~10 nm, which were aggregated to hierarchical Pt nanostructures of ~40–65 nm and surrounded or supported by the carbohydrate. These sugar-coated platinum nanostructures present a facile way to support and heterogenize nanoparticles, avoid leaching and enable easier separation and handling. The catalytic activity of the SC-Pt-NS was shown in the hydrosilylation test reaction of phenylacetylene with triethylsilane, where very high turnover frequency (TOF) values of up to 87,200 h−1 could be achieved, while the platinum metal leaching into the product was very low.

Composition control of alloy nanoparticles consisting of bulk-immiscible Au and Rh metals via an ionic liquid/metal sputtering technique for improving their electrocatalytic activity

AuRh bimetallic alloy nanoparticles (NPs) were successfully prepared by simultaneous sputtering of Au and Rh in a room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL) of N,N-diethyl-N-methyl-N-(2-methoxyethyl) ammonium tetrafluoroborate (DEME-BF₄). Bimetallic AuRh alloy NPs of 1-2 nm in size were formed in the RTIL. The alloy composition was controllable by changing the surface areas of Au and Rh plates used as sputtering targets. Loading thus-obtained AuRh NPs on carbon black (CB) powders increased the size of AuRh NPs to ca. 2-8 nm, depending on the Au/Rh ratio. The electrocatalytic activity for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) of AuRh NP-loaded CB catalysts showed a volcano-type dependence on their composition, in which AuRh NPs with Au surface coverage of 62% exhibited the optimal ORR activity, the specific activity being ca. 5 times higher than that of pure Rh NPs.

Ionic Liquid/Deep Eutectic Solvent-Mediated Ni-Based Catalysts and Their Application in Water Splitting Electrocatalysis

Nickel-based electrocatalysts have been widely used to catalyze electrocatalytic water splitting. In order to obtain high-performance nickel-based electrocatalysts, using ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents mediated their preparation has received increasing attention. Firstly, ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents can act as media and templates for the preparation of Ni-based nanomaterials with novel structures and excellent catalytic activity. Secondly, ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents can be employed as reactants to participate the synthesis of catalysts. Their participation not only increase the catalytic performance, but also simplify the reaction system, improve reproducibility, reduce emissions, and achieve atomic economy. On the basis of the work of our group, this review gives a detailed description of the impressive progress made concerning ionic liquids and deep eutectic solvents in the preparation of nickel-based electrocatalysts according to their roles. We also point out the challenges and opportunities in the field.

The Facile Deposition of Pt Nanoparticles on Reduced Graphite Oxide in Tunable Aryl Alkyl Ionic Liquids for ORR Catalysts

In this study, we present the facile formation of platinum nanoparticles (Pt-NPs) on reduced graphite oxide (rGO) (Pt-NP@rGO) by microwave-induced heating of the organometallic precursor ((MeCp)PtMe₃ in different tunable aryl alkyl ionic liquids (TAAIL). In the absence of rGO, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) reveals the formation of dense aggregates of Pt-NPs, with primary particle sizes of 2 to 6 nm. In contrast, in the Pt-NP@rGO samples, Pt-NPs are homogeneously distributed on the rGO, without any aggregation. Pt-NP@rGO samples are used as electrode materials for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), which was assessed by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV). The electrochemical surface area (ECSA) and mass-specific activity (MA) increase up to twofold, compared with standard Pt/C 60%, making Pt-NP@rGO a competitive material for ORR.

Sputtering onto liquids: a critical review

Sputter deposition of atoms onto liquid substrates aims at producing colloidal dispersions of small monodisperse ultrapure nanoparticles (NPs). Since sputtering onto liquids combines the advantages of the physical vapor deposition technique and classical colloidal synthesis, the review contains chapters explaining the basics of (magnetron) sputter deposition and the formation of NPs in solution. This review article covers more than 132 papers published on this topic from 1996 to September 2021 and aims at providing a critical analysis of most of the reported data; we will address the influence of the sputtering parameters (sputter power, current, voltage, sputter time, working gas pressure, and the type of sputtering plasma) and host liquid properties (composition, temperature, viscosity, and surface tension) on the NP formation as well as a detailed overview of the properties and applications of the produced NPs.

Electrochemical Synthesis of Unique Nanomaterials in Ionic Liquids

The review considers the features of the processes of the electrochemical synthesis of nanostructures in ionic liquids (ILs), including the production of carbon nanomaterials, silicon and germanium nanoparticles, metallic nanoparticles, nanomaterials and surface nanostructures based on oxides. In addition, the analysis of works on the synthesis of nanoscale polymer films of conductive polymers prepared using ionic liquids by electrochemical methods is given. The purpose of the review is to dwell upon an aspect of the applicability of ILs that is usually not fully reflected in modern literature, the synthesis of nanostructures (including unique ones that cannot be obtained in other electrolytes). The current underestimation of ILs as an electrochemical medium for the synthesis of nanomaterials may limit our understanding and the scope of their potential application. Another purpose of our review is to expand their possible application and to show the relative simplicity of the experimental part of the work.

Insight into the inhibitory mechanism of soluble ionic liquids on the transport of TiO2 nanoparticles in saturated porous media: Roles of alkyl chain lengths and counteranion types

Column experiments were carried out to investigate the transport of TiO₂ nanoparticles (nTiO₂) in water-saturated porous media in the presence of various imidazolium-based ionic liquids (ILs) with different alkyl chain lengths and counteranions. The results indicated that the effects of ILs on nTiO₂ transport were considerably dependent upon IL species. In general, the transport-inhibition effects increased with the increasing length of branched alkyl chain on the ILs (i.e., [C₆mim]Cl > [C₄mim]Cl > [C₂mim]Cl). The trend was dominated by the hydrophobicity effects of ILs. Meanwhile, the inhibitory effects of ILs were strongly related to the counteranions and followed the order of [C₄mim]Cl > [C₄mim][TOS] > [C₄mim][PF₆], mainly due to different electrostatic repulsion force between nanoparticles and porous media in the presence of various ILs. Furthermore, the inhibitory role of [C₄mim][TOS] in nTiO₂ transport under acidic conditions (i.e., pH 6.5) was greater than that under alkaline conditions (i.e., pH 8.0). The dominant mechanism was that the differences in the extent of electrostatic repulsion between sand grains and nTiO₂ with or without ILs at pH 6.5 were larger than that at pH 8.0. Moreover, two-site kinetic retention model and DLVO theory provided good descriptions for the transport behaviors of nTiO₂ with different ILs.

Experimental and DFT calculation study of interaction between silver nanoparticle and 1-butyl-3-methyl imidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid

The mechanism of stabilization of silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) by 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium tetrafluoroborate ionic liquid (IL) is elucidated from experimental spectroscopic investigations and density functional theory (DFT) calculations. FTIR spectrum of the synthesized IL stabilized silver nanoparticles reveals small red shift in B–F stretching frequency while C–H stretching remains unshifted. There is no shift in NMR peaks of IL before and after the synthesis of IL stabilized Ag NPs. This suggests that Ag NPs are surrounded by anions of ILs. The optimized structure obtained from density functional theory (DFT) calculations also shows the anionic part of the IL surrounding the Ag nanocluster. This is supported by the IR frequency data calculated using DFT. The calculated binding energy and interaction energy obtained between cluster and IL is considerably attractive. Density of State (DOS) calculation shows that the HOMO-LUMO gap of the Ag cluster-IL composite is significantly lesser than that of the IL alone.

Pseudohalogen Chemistry in Ionic Liquids with Non-innocent Cations and Anions

Within the second funding period of the SPP 1708 "Material Synthesis near Room Temperature",which started in 2017, we were able to synthesize novel anionic species utilizing Ionic Liquids (ILs) both, as reaction media and reactant. ILs, bearing the decomposable and non-innocent methyl carbonate anion [CO3 Me]- , served as starting material and enabled facile access to pseudohalide salts by reaction with Me3 Si-X (X=CN, N3 , OCN, SCN). Starting with the synthesized Room temperature Ionic Liquid (RT-IL) [nBu3 MeN][B(OMe)3 (CN)], we were able to crystallize the double salt [nBu3 MeN]2 [B(OMe)3 (CN)](CN). Furthermore, we studied the reaction of [WCC]SCN and [WCC]CN (WCC=weakly coordinating cation) with their corresponding protic acids HX (X=SCN, CN), which resulted in formation of [H(NCS)2 ]- and the temperature labile solvate anions [CN(HCN)n ]- (n=2, 3). In addition, the highly labile anionic HCN solvates were obtained from [PPN]X ([PPN]=μ-nitridobis(triphenylphosphonium), X=N3 , OCN, SCN and OCP) and HCN. Crystals of [PPN][X(HCN)3 ] (X=N3 , OCN) and [PPN][SCN(HCN)2 ] were obtained when the crystallization was carried out at low temperatures. Interestingly, reaction of [PPN]OCP with HCN was noticed, which led to the formation of [P(CN)2 ]- , crystallizing as HCN disolvate [PPN][P(CN⋅HCN)2 ]. Furthermore, we were able to isolate the novel cyanido(halido) silicate dianions of the type [SiCl0.78 (CN)5.22 ]2- and [SiF(CN)5 ]2- and the hexa-substituted [Si(CN)6 ]2- by temperature controlled halide/cyanide exchange reactions. By facile neutralization reactions with the non-innocent cation of [Et3 HN]2 [Si(CN)6 ] with MOH (M=Li, K), Li2 [Si(CN)6 ] ⋅ 2 H2 O and K2 [Si(CN)6 ] were obtained, which form three dimensional coordination polymers. From salt metathesis processes of M2 [Si(CN)6 ] with different imidazolium bromides, we were able to isolate new imidazolium salts and the ionic liquid [BMIm]2 [Si(CN)6 ]. When reacting [Mes(nBu)Im]2 [Si(CN)6 ] with an excess of the strong Lewis acid B(C6 F5 )3 , the voluminous adduct anion {Si[CN⋅B(C6 F5 )3 ]6 }2- was obtained.

Substituent effects on the electronic structure of the flat Blatter radical: correlation analysis of experimental and computational data

Sputter deposition of highly active complex solid solution electrocatalysts into an ionic liquid library: effect of structure and composition on oxygen reduction activity

Complex solid solution electrocatalysts (often called high-entropy alloys) present a new catalyst class with highly promising features due to the interplay of multi-element active sites. One hurdle is the limited knowledge about structure-activity correlations needed for targeted catalyst design. We prepared Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni nanoparticles by magnetron sputtering a high entropy Cantor alloy target simultaneously into an ionic liquid library. The synthesized nanoparticles have a narrow size distribution but different sizes (from 1.3 ± 0.1 nm up to 2.6 ± 0.3 nm), different crystallinity (amorphous, face-centered cubic or body-centered cubic) and composition (i.e. high Mn versus low Mn content). The Cr-Mn-Fe-Co-Ni complex solid solution nanoparticles possess an unprecedented intrinsic electrocatalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction in alkaline media, some of them even surpassing that of Pt. The highest intrinsic activity was obtained for body-centered cubic nanoparticles with a low Mn and Fe content which were synthesized using the ionic liquid 1-etyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide [Emimi][(Tf)2N].

A decennary update on applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocyclic scaffolds

Heterocycles have been found to be of much importance as several nitrogen- and oxygen-containing heterocycle compounds exist amongst the various USFDA-approved drugs. Because of the advancement of nanotechnology, nanocatalysis has found abundant applications in the synthesis of heterocyclic compounds. Numerous nanoparticles (NPs) have been utilized for several organic transformations, which led us to make dedicated efforts for the complete coverage of applications of metal nanoparticles (MNPs) in the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds reported from 2010 to 2019. Our emphasize during the coverage of catalyzed reactions of the various MNPs such as Ag, Au, Co, Cu, Fe, Ni, Pd, Pt, Rh, Ru, Si, Ti, and Zn has not only been on nanoparticles catalyzed synthetic transformations for the synthesis of heterocyclic scaffolds, but also provide an inherent framework for the reader to select a suitable catalytic system of interest for the synthesis of desired heterocyclic scaffold.

Controlling the oxidation state of molybdenum oxide nanoparticles prepared by ionic liquid/metal sputtering to enhance plasmon-induced charge separation

Nanoparticles composed of molybdenum oxide, MoO x , were successfully prepared by room-temperature ionic liquid (RTIL)/metal sputtering followed by heat treatment. Hydroxyl groups in RTIL molecules retarded the coalescence between MoO x NPs during heat treatment at 473 K in air, while the oxidation state of Mo species in MoO x nanoparticles (NPs) could be modified by changing the heat treatment time. An LSPR peak was observed at 840 nm in the near-IR region for MoO x NPs of 55 nm or larger in size that were annealed in a hydroxyl-functionalized RTIL. Photoexcitation of the LSPR peak of MoO x NPs induced electron transfer from NPs to ITO electrodes.

The key role of R-NHC coupling (R = C, H, heteroatom) and M-NHC bond cleavage in the evolution of M/NHC complexes and formation of catalytically active species

Complexes of metals with N-heterocyclic carbene ligands (M/NHC) are typically considered the systems of choice in homogeneous catalysis due to their stable metal-ligand framework. However, it becomes obvious that even metal species with a strong M-NHC bond can undergo evolution in catalytic systems, and processes of M-NHC bond cleavage are common for different metals and NHC ligands. This review is focused on the main types of the M-NHC bond cleavage reactions and their impact on activity and stability of M/NHC catalytic systems. For the first time, we consider these processes in terms of NHC-connected and NHC-disconnected active species derived from M/NHC precatalysts and classify them as fundamentally different types of catalysts. Problems of rational catalyst design and sustainability issues are discussed in the context of the two different types of M/NHC catalysis mechanisms.

Properties of Dicationic Disiloxane Ionic Liquids

A number of dicationic ionic liquids with a disiloxane linker between imidazolium cations and bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide anion were synthesized and characterized. Melting points, viscosity, and volatility in a vacuum were measured; the thermal and hydrolytic stability of ionic liquids were also studied. The dependence of the properties on the structure of substituents in the cation of the ionic liquid was demonstrated.

Synthesis and Electrocatalytic HER Studies of Carbene-Ligated Cu3-xP Nanocrystals

N-heterocyclic carbenes (NHCs) are an important class of ligands capable of making strong carbon-metal bonds. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the study of carbene-ligated nanocrystals, primarily coinage metal nanocrystals, which have found application as catalysts for numerous reactions. The general ability of NHC ligands to positively affect the catalytic properties of other types of nanocrystal catalysts remains unknown. Herein, we present the first carbene-stabilized Cu_3-xP nanocrystals. Inquiries into the mechanism of formation of NHC-ligated Cu_3-xP nanocrystals suggest that crystalline Cu_3-xP forms directly as a result of a high-temperature metathesis reaction between a tris(trimethylsilyl)phosphine precursor and an NHC-CuBr precursor, the latter of which behaves as a source of both the carbene ligand and Cu⁺. To study the effect of the NHC surface ligands on the catalytic performance, we tested the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolving ability of the NHC-ligated Cu_3-xP nanocrystals and found that they possess superior activity to analogous oleylamine-ligated Cu_3-xP nanocrystals. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the NHC ligands minimize unfavorable electrostatic interactions between the copper phosphide surface and H⁺ during the first step of the hydrogen evolution reaction, which contributes to the superior performance of NHC-ligated Cu_3-xP catalysts as compared to oleylamine-ligated Cu_3-xP catalysts.

Ionothermal Synthesis of Metal Oxide-Based Nanocatalysts and Their Application towards the Oxidative Desulfurization of Dibenzothiophene

Herein, different types of metal-containing ionic liquid (IL) complexes and various metal oxide-based nanocatalysts have been successfully prepared (from ionic liquids) and applied for the oxidative desulfurization (ODS) of dibenzothiophene (DBT). The ILs complexes are comprised of N,N′-dialkylimidazolium salts of the type [RMIM-Cl]2[MCln], where [RMIM+] = 1 alkyl-3-methylimidazolium and M = Mn(II)/Fe(II)/Ni(II)/Co(II). These complexes were prepared using an easy synthetic route by refluxing the methanolic solutions of imidazolium chloride and metal chlorides under facile conditions. The as-prepared complexes were further used as precursors during the ionothermal and chemical synthesis of various metal oxide-based nanocatalysts. The resulting ILs salts and metal oxides NPs have been characterized by FT-IR, TGA, XRD, SEM, and TEM analysis. The results indicate that thermal and chemical treatment of ILs based precursor has produced different phases of metal oxide NPs. The calcination produced α-Fe2O3, Mn3O4, and Co3O4, NPs, whereas the chemical treatment of the ILs salts have led to the production of Fe3O4, Mn2O3, and α-Co(OH)2. All the as-prepared salts and metal oxide-based nanocatalysts were used as catalysts towards ODS of dibenzothiophene. The oxidation of dibenzothiophene was performed at atmospheric conditions using hydrogen peroxide as the oxygen donor. Among various catalysts, the thermally obtained metal oxide NPs such as α-Fe2O3, Mn3O4, and Co3O4, have demonstrated relatively superior catalytic activities compared to the other materials. For example, among these nanocatalysts, α-Fe2O3 has exhibited a maximum conversion (∼99%) of dibenzothiophene (DBT) to dibenzothiophene sulfone (DBTO2).

Deposition of metal particles onto semiconductor nanorods using an ionic liquid

The current study investigates whether metal deposition onto an existing nanorod can be carried out using an ionic liquid, and the effect this has on catalytic performance. Platinum, gold, and silver nanoparticles were deposited onto CdSe@CdS (core@shell) nanorods from metal salts in an ionic liquid (1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide) without additional surfactants or reducing agents. Photocatalytic dye degradation experiments showed that catalysts with platinum particles deposited using the ionic liquid out-performed similar materials synthesized using organic solvents and ligands. We concluded that metal particles can be deposited onto well-defined semiconductor nanorods using ionic liquids and metal salts without the need for additional reagents, and the deposited particles did not cause significant aggregation even when these materials were taken into organic media. It is possible that a broad range of metal/semiconductor heterostructured particles can be prepared using the methods reported here.
