Assessing impact of elevated CO2 on heavy metal accumulation in crops: meta-analysis and implications for food security

Human activities led to elevation in carbon dioxide (CO2) concentrations in atmosphere. While such increase per se may be beneficial for the growth of some crops, it comes with a caveat of affecting crop nutritional status. Here, we present a comprehensive analysis of changes in concentration of essential (Cu, Fe, Mn, Zn, Mo, Ni) and non-essential (Ba, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, and Sr) heavy metals in response to elevated CO2, drawing on a meta-analysis of 1216 paired observations. The major findings are as follows: (1) Elevated CO2 leads to reduced concentrations of Cu, Fe, Mn, and Zn in crops; (2) the extent of above reduction varies among plants species and is most pronounced in cereals and then in legumes and vegetables; (3) reduction in accumulation of non-essential (toxic) metals is less pronounced, potentially leading to an unfavorable essential/non-essential metal ratio in plants; (4) the above effects will come with significant implication to human health, exacerbating effects of the "hidden hunger" caused by the lack of Fe and Zn in the human diets. The paper also analyses the mechanistic basis of nutrient acquisition (both at physiological and molecular levels) and calls for the changes in the governmental policies to increase efforts of plant breeders to create genotypes with improved nutrient use efficiency for essential micronutrients while uncoupling their transport from non-essential (toxic) heavy metals.

Cadmium contamination in sediments from a mangrove wetland: Insights from lead isotopes

Cadmium (Cd) pollution has gained significant attention in mangrove sediments due to its high toxicity and mobility. However, the sources of Cd and the factors influencing its accumulation in these sediments have remained elusive. In this study, we utilized lead (Pb) isotopic signatures for the first time to assess Cd contamination in mangrove sediments from the northern region of the Beibu Gulf. A strong correlation was observed between Cd and Pb concentrations in the mangrove sediments, suggesting a shared source that can be estimated using Pb isotopic signatures. By employing a Bayesian mixing model, we determined that 70.1 ± 8.2 % of Cd originated from natural sources, while 12.9 ± 4.9 %, 9.8 ± 3.7 %, and 7.1 ± 3.4 % were attributed to agricultural activities, non-ferrous metal smelting, and coal combustion, respectively. Our study clearly suggests that natural Cd could also dominate the high Cd content. Agricultural activities were the most important anthropogenic Cd sources, and the increased anthropogenic Cd accumulation in mangrove sediment was related to organic matter. This study introduces a novel approach for assessing Cd contamination in mangrove sediment, providing useful insights into Cd pollution in coastal wetlands.

Isolation of biocrust cyanobacteria and evaluation of Cu, Pb, and Zn immobilisation potential for soil restoration and sustainable agriculture

Soil contamination by heavy metals represents an important environmental and public health problem of global concern. Biocrust-forming cyanobacteria offer promise for heavy metal immobilisation in contaminated soils due to their unique characteristics, including their ability to grow in contaminated soils and produce exopolysaccharides (EPS). However, limited research has analysed the representativeness of cyanobacteria in metal-contaminated soils. Additionally, there is a lack of studies examining how cyanobacteria adaptation to specific environments can impact their metal-binding capacity. To address this research gap, we conducted a study analysing the bacterial communities of cyanobacteria-dominated biocrusts in a contaminated area from South Sardinia (Italy). Additionally, by using two distinct approaches, we isolated three Nostoc commune strains from cyanobacteria-dominated biocrust and we also evaluated their potential to immobilise heavy metals. The first isolation method involved acclimatizing biocrust samples in liquid medium while, in the second method, biocrust samples were directly seeded onto agar plates. The microbial community analysis revealed Cyanobacteria, Bacteroidota, Proteobacteria, and Actinobacteria as the predominant groups, with cyanobacteria representing between 13.3 % and 26.0 % of the total community. Despite belonging to the same species, these strains exhibited different growth rates (1.1-2.2 g L-1 of biomass) and capacities for EPS production (400-1786 mg L-1). The three strains demonstrated a notable ability for metal immobilisation, removing up to 88.9 % of Cu, 86.2 % of Pb, and 45.3 % of Zn from liquid medium. Cyanobacteria EPS production showed a strong correlation with the removal of Cu, indicating its role in facilitating metal immobilisation. Furthermore, differences in Pb immobilisation (40-86.2 %) suggest possible environmental adaptation mechanisms of the strains. This study highlights the promising application of N. commune strains for metal immobilisation in soils, offering a potential bioremediation tool to combat the adverse effects of soil contamination and promote environmental sustainability.

Assessment of health risks based on different populations and sources of heavy metals on agricultural lane in Tengzhou City by APCS-MLR models

To identify the sources of heavy metals in local soils and their risks to human health. This study quantified the concentrations of eight heavy metals in 504 soil samples collected in Tengzhou, China. The ecological risks of a single heavy metal (EI), a comprehensive ecological risk index (RI), and a health risk assessment model were used to evaluate the level of contamination in the city. The results of the research study indicate that there are different levels of heavy metal pollution in rural and urban agricultural areas in Tengzhou. Moreover, the spatial variability of mercury (Hg) is considerable, reaching 0.96, indicating a significant impact of anthropogenic activities. For the ecological risk, the heavy metal element with the highest EI value was mercury with a mean value of 67.22 and a peak value of 776.00. The heavy metal with the lowest mean EI value was Zn with only 1.03. Meanwhile, the average RI is only 128.59, but some areas have an RI as high as 842.2. The sources of heavy metals were identified using principal component analysis, correlation analysis, and an absolute principal component score multiple linear regression model (APCS-MLR). The non-carcinogenic risk for children, the carcinogenic risk for children, and the carcinogenic risk for adults were 1.23, 2.42×10-4 and 1.00×10-4, respectively, and these values exceeded their respective recommended values, and As and Cr had some carcinogenic hazards. Heavy metals in the soil come from natural, industrial, traffic and agricultural sources and represent 39.59%, 29.48%, 25.17% and 5.77%, respectively. The main source of heavy metals in local agricultural soils is the geological background, and the government needs to strengthen the monitoring of As and Cr in drinking water resources, as well as reduce traffic pollution and factory waste emissions to reduce Hg in soils.

Phosphorus-induced restructuring of the ascorbate-glutathione cycle and lignin biosynthesis alleviates manganese toxicity in peach roots

Manganese (Mn) is indispensable for plant growth, but its excessive uptake in acidic soils leads to toxicity, hampering food safety. Phosphorus (P) application is known to mitigate Mn toxicity, yet the underlying molecular mechanism remains elusive. Here, we conducted physiological and transcriptomic analyses of peach roots response to P supply under Mn toxicity. Manganese treatment disrupted root architecture and caused ultrastructural damage due to oxidative injury. Notably, P application ameliorated the detrimental effects and improved the damaged roots by preventing the shrinkage of cortical cells, epidermis and endodermis, as well as reducing the accumulation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). Transcriptomic analysis revealed the differentially expressed genes enriched in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, cysteine, methionine and glutathione metabolism under Mn and P treatments. Phosphorus application upregulated the transcripts and activities of core enzymes crucial for lignin biosynthesis, enhancing cell wall integrity. Furthermore, P treatment activated ascorbate-glutathione cycle, augmenting ROS detoxification. Additionally, under Mn toxicity, P application downregulated Mn uptake transporter while enhancing vacuolar sequestration transporter transcripts, reducing Mn uptake and facilitating vacuolar storage. Collectively, P application prevents Mn accumulation in roots by modulating Mn transporters, bolstering lignin biosynthesis and attenuating oxidative stress, thereby improving root growth under Mn toxicity. Our findings provide novel insights into the mechanism of P-mediated alleviation of Mn stress and strategies for managing metal toxicity in peach orchards.

Carbene-Catalyzed and Pnictogen Bond-Assisted Access to PIII-Stereogenic Compounds

Intermolecular pnictogen bonding (PnB) catalysis has received increased interest in non-covalent organocatalysis. It has been demonstrated that organic electron-deficient pnictogen atoms can act as prospective Lewis acids. Here, we present a catalytic approach for the asymmetric synthesis of chiral PIII compounds by combining intramolecular PnB interactions and carbene catalysis. Our design features a pre-chiral phosphorus molecule bearing two electron-withdrawing benzoyl groups, resulting in the formation of a σ-hole at the P atom. X-ray and non-covalent interaction (NCI) analysis indicate that the model substrates exhibit intrinsic PnB interaction between the oxygen atom of the formyl group and the phosphorus atom. This induces a conformational locking effect, leading to the crystallization of the phosphorus substrate in a preferred conformation (P212121 chiral group). Under the catalysis of N-heterocyclic carbene, the aldehyde moiety activated by the pnictogen bond selectively reacts with an alcohol to yield the corresponding chiral monoester/phosphorus product with excellent enantioselectivity. This Lewis acidic phosphorus center, aroused by the non-polarized intramolecular pnictogen bond interaction, assists in conformational and selective regulations, providing unique opportunities for catalysis and beyond.

Ecological and health risk assessments of heavy metals and their accumulation in a peanut-soil system

Heavy metals pollution is a notable threat to environment and human health. This study evaluated the potential ecological and health risks of heavy metals (Cu, Cr, Cd, Pb, Zn, Ni, and As) and their accumulation in a peanut-soil system based on 34 soil and peanut kernel paired samples across China. Soil As and Cd posed the greatest pollution risk with 47.1% and 17.6% of soil samples exceeding the risk screen levels, respectively, with 26.5% and 20.6% of the soil sites at relatively strong potential ecological risk level, respectively, and with the geo-accumulation levels at several soil sites in the uncontaminated to moderately contaminated categories. About 35.29% and 2.94% of soil sites were moderately and severely polluted based on Nemerow comprehensive pollution index, respectively, and a total of 32.4% of samples were at moderate ecological hazard level based on comprehensive potential ecological risk index values. The Cd, Cr, Ni, and Cu contents exceeded the standard in 11.76, 8.82, 11.76 and 5.88% of the peanut kernel samples, respectively. Soil metals posed more health risks to children than adults in the order As > Ni > Cr > Cu > Pb > Zn > Cd for non-carcinogenic health risks and Ni > Cr ≫ Cd > As > Pb for carcinogenic health risks. The soil As non-cancer risk index for children was greater than the permitted limits at 14 sites, and soil Ni and Cr posed the greatest carcinogenic risk to adults and children at many soil sites. The metals in peanut did not pose a non-carcinogenic risk according to standard. Peanut kernels had strong enrichment ability for Cd with an average bio-concentration factor (BCF) of 1.62. Soil metals contents and significant soil properties accounted for 35-74% of the variation in the BCF values of metals based on empirical prediction models.

Nano silica's role in regulating heavy metal uptake in Calendula officinalis

BACKGROUND

Soil contamination with heavy metals poses a significant threat to plant health and human well-being. This study explores the potential of nano silica as a solution for mitigating heavy metal uptake in Calendula officinalis.

RESULTS

Greenhouse experiments demonstrated, 1000 mg•kg- 1 nano silica caused a 6% increase in soil pH compared to the control treatment. Also in 1000 mg. kg- 1 nano silica, the concentrations of available Pb (lead), Zn (zinc), Cu (copper), Ni (nickel), and Cr (chromium) in soil decreased by 12%, 11%, 11.6%, 10%, and 9.5%, respectively, compared to the control. Nano silica application significantly reduces heavy metal accumulation in C. officinalis exposed to contaminated soil except Zn. In 1000 mg.kg- 1 nano silica shoots Zn 13.28% increased and roots Zn increased 13% compared to the control treatment. Applying nano silica leads to increase the amount of phosphorus (P) 25%, potassium (K) 26% uptake by plant, In 1000 mg.kg - 1 treatment the highest amount of urease enzyme activity was 2.5%, dehydrogenase enzyme activity, 23.6% and the highest level of alkaline phosphatase enzyme activity was 13.5% higher than the control treatment.

CONCLUSION

Nano silica, particularly at a concentration of 1000 mg.kg - 1, enhanced roots and shoots length, dry weight, and soil enzyme activity Moreover, it increased P and K concentrations in plant tissues while decreasing heavy metals uptake by plant.

Divergent responses of rhizosphere soil phosphorus fractions and biological features of Salix psammophila to fertilization strategies under cadmium contamination

Soil oligotrophy in areas heavily contaminated with heavy metals poses a significant challenge to vegetation establishment and phytoremediation processes. Phosphorus (P) cycling plays a critical role in global biogeochemical cycles, but there is limited understanding of its response to varying fertilization strategies and its correlation with phytoremediation effectiveness. This study primarily investigated the effects of various fertilization strategies, including nitrogen (N, 300 mg·kg-1), P (100 mg·kg-1), NP (combined N and P at 300 mg·kg-1 and 100 mg·kg-1, respectively), and HP (high P, 300 mg·kg-1) application, on rhizosphere soil P fractions and P-solubilizing microbial community (harboring phoD and phoC genes, respectively) of Salix psammophila under cadmium contamination. Application of NP significantly enhanced plant growth and cadmium accumulation, whereas HP inhibited cadmium bioaccumulation but promoted its translocation. Compared to untreated soil, N application promoted P cycling, leading to increases of 141.9 %, 60.4 %, and 10.3 % in Resin-Pi, diluted HCl-Pi, and conc.HCl-Pi, respectively. P application decreased organic phosphorus (Po) fractions by 24.4 % - 225.8 %, but N incorporation mitigated the declining trend in Po and augmented alkaline phosphatase activity. Fertilization strategies significantly regulated phoC- or phoD-harboring bacterial community structure, but their differential nutrient demands resulted in distinct responses. The phoD-harboring bacteria exhibited higher diversity and network complexity, with numerous biomarkers and fertilizer-sensitive OTUs discovered across treatments. Structural equation modeling (SEM) analysis indicated that phytoremediation efficiency was directly affected by Pi fractions, and phoD-harboring bacteria exhibited stronger associations with Pi fractions than phoC-harboring bacteria. In conclusion, our results reveal potential pathways through which fertilization strategies influence phytoremediation by affecting the structure of P-solubilizing microbial community. Furthermore, our study emphasizes the importance of combined N and P application in promoting Cd accumulation in plants, with high P levels appearing as an ideal fertilization strategy for phytoremediation targeting the harvest of aboveground biomass.

Effect of fertilization on the accumulation and health risk for heavy metals in native Andean potatoes in the highlands of Perú

Soil infertility is a global problem, amendments such as organic fertilizers and mineral fertilizers are used to improve crop yields. However, these fertilizers contain heavy metals as well as essential mineral elements. The objective of the study was to determine the effect of organic and inorganic fertilizer on the accumulation and health risk of heavy metals in tubers. The plants were cultivated at an altitude of 3970 m using four treatments (poultry manure, alpaca manure, island guano and inorganic fertilizer) and a control group. Soil contamination levels and the degree of metal accumulation in the tubers were also determined. As a result, it was found that the use of inorganic fertilizer and poultry manure increased the values of Cu and Zn in soils, exceeding the recommended standards. The accumulation of heavy metals in potato tubers did not exceed the maximum recommended limits with the exception of Pb, which exceeded the limit allowed by the FAO/WHO (0.1 mg kg-1). Poultry manure contributed to the highest accumulation of Zn, Cu and Pb in tubers with 11.62±1.30, 3.48±0.20 and 0.12 ±0.02 mg kg-1 respectively. The transfer of metals from the soil to the tubers was less than 1. Individual and total non-carcinogenic risk values were less than 1, indicating a safe level of consumption for children and adults. The cancer risk was found to be within an acceptable range. However, poultry manure and inorganic fertilizer treatments had the highest total cancer risk values in both age groups, suggesting a long-term carcinogenic risk.

Geochemical fractionation of iron in paper industry and municipal landfill soils: Ecological and health risks insights

Industrial processes and municipal wastes largely contribute to the fluctuations in iron (Fe) content in soils. Fe, when present in unfavorable amount, causes harmful effects on human, flora, and fauna. The present study is an attempt to evaluate the composition of Fe in surface soils from paper mill and municipal landfill sites and assess their potential ecological and human health risks. Geochemical fractionation was conducted to explore the chemical bonding of Fe across different fractions, i.e., water-soluble (F1) to residual (F6). Different contamination factors and pollution indices were evaluated to comprehend Fe contamination extent across the study area. Results indicated the preference for less mobile forms in the paper mill and landfill, with 26.66% and 43.46% of Fe associated with the Fe-Mn oxide bound fraction (F4), and 57.22% and 24.78% in the residual fraction (F6). Maximum mobility factor (MF) of 30.65% was observed in the paper mill, and 80.37% in the landfill. The enrichment factor (EF) varied within the range of 20 < EF < 40, signifying a high level of enrichment in the soil. The individual contamination factor (ICF) ranged from 0 to >6, highlighting low to high contamination. Adults were found to be more vulnerable towards Fe associated health risks compared to children. The Hazard Quotient (HQ) index showed the highest risk potential pathways as dermal contact > ingestion > inhalation. The study offers insights into potential Fe contamination risks in comparable environments, underscoring the crucial role of thorough soil assessments in shaping land use and waste management policies.

Modified diatomite for soil remediation and its implications for heavy metal absorption in Calendula officinalis

BACKGROUND

Among different adsorbents, natural and inorganic compounds such as diatomite are important and advantageous in terms of high efficiency and cost-effectiveness, and function in stabilizing heavy metals in the environment. Calendula officinalis, a plant known as a high accumulator of heavy metals, was cultivated in soil treated with varying concentrations of modified diatomite to demonstrate the efficiency of modified diatomite in stabilizating of heavy metals in soils, RESULTS: The modification of diatomite aimed to enhance Calendula officinalis adsorptive properties, particularly towards heavy metals such as lead (Pb), Zinc (Zn), Chromium (Cr), Nickle (Ni), and Copper (Cu), common contaminants in industrial soils. The experimental design included both control and treated soil samples, with assessments at regular intervals. Modified diatomite significantly decreased the bioaccumulation of heavy metals in contaminated soils except Zn, evidenced by decreased DTPA extractable heavy metals in soil and also heavy metal concentrations in plant tissues. Using 10% modified diatomite decreased 91% Pb and Cu, 78% Cr, and 79% Ni concentration of plants compared to the control treatment. The highest concentration of Zn in plant tissue was observed in 2.5% modified diatomite treatment. Remarkably, the application of modified diatomite also appeared to improve the nutrient profile of the soil, leading to enhanced uptake of key nutrients like phosphorus (P) 1.18%, and potassium (K) 79.6% in shoots and 82.3% in roots in Calendula officinalis. Consequently, treated plants exhibited improved growth characteristics, including shoots and roots height of 16.98% and 12.8% respectively, and shoots fresh and dry weight of 48.5% and 50.2% respectively., compared to those in untreated, contaminated soil.

CONCLUSION

The findings suggest promising implications for using such amendments in ecological restoration and sustainable agriculture, particularly in areas impacted by industrial pollution.

Zinc and Silicon Nano-Fertilizers Influence Ionomic and Metabolite Profiles in Maize to Overcome Salt Stress

Salinity stress is a major factor affecting the nutritional and metabolic profiles of crops, thus hindering optimal yield and productivity. Recent advances in nanotechnology propose an avenue for the use of nano-fertilizers as a potential solution for better nutrient management and stress mitigation. This study aimed to evaluate the benefits of conventional and nano-fertilizers (nano-Zn/nano-Si) on maize and subcellular level changes in its ionomic and metabolic profiles under salt stress conditions. Zinc and silicon were applied both in conventional and nano-fertilizer-using farms under stress (100 mM NaCl) and normal conditions. Different ions, sugars, and organic acids (OAs) were determined using ion chromatography and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy (ICP-MS). The results revealed significant improvements in different ions, sugars, OAs, and other metabolic profiles of maize. Nanoparticles boosted sugar metabolism, as evidenced by increased glucose, fructose, and sucrose concentrations, and improved nutrient uptake, indicated by higher nitrate, sulfate, and phosphate levels. Particularly, nano-fertilizers effectively limited Na accumulation under saline conditions and enhanced maize's salt stress tolerance. Furthermore, nano-treatments optimized the potassium-to-sodium ratio, a critical factor in maintaining ionic homeostasis under stress conditions. With the growing threat of salinity stress on global food security, these findings highlight the urgent need for further development and implementation of effective solutions like the application of nano-fertilizers in mitigating the negative impact of salinity on plant growth and productivity. However, this controlled environment limits the direct applicability to field conditions and needs future research, particularly long-term field trials, to confirm such results of nano-fertilizers against salinity stress and their economic viability towards sustainable agriculture.

Pollution indices of selected metals in tea (Camellia sinensis L.) growing soils of the Upper Assam region divulge a non-trifling menace of National Highway

The study investigated the influence of a National Highway (NH) traversing tea estates (TEs) on heavy metal (HM) contamination in the top soils of Upper Assam, India. The dispersion and accumulation of six HMs, viz. cadmium (Cd), copper (Cu), iron (Fe), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), and zinc (Zn), within tea-growing soils were assessed using diverse indices: contamination factor (CF), degree of contamination (DC), enrichment factor (EF), geo-accumulation index (Igeo), modified degree of contamination (MDC), Nemerow pollution index (PINemerow), pollution load index (PLI), potential ecological risk factor (Eri), and potential ecological risk index (RI). The order of HM prevalence was Fe > Mn > Zn > Ni > Cu > Cd. Elevated Cd levels near the NH prompted immediate attention, while Cd and Zn showed moderate pollution in CF, EF, and RI. The remaining metals posed minimal individual risk (Eri< 40), resulting in an overall contamination range of "nil to shallow," signifying slight contamination from the studied metals. From MDC values for investigated metals, it was found to be "zero to very low degree of contamination" at all locations except the vicinity of NH. Soil pollution, as determined by PLI, indicated unpolluted soils in both districts, yet PINemerow values indicated slight pollution. The statistical analysis revealed that there is a significant decrease in most of the indices of HM as the distance from NH increases. The application of multivariate statistical techniques namely Principal Component Analysis and Cluster Analysis showed the presence of three distinct homogenous groups of distances based on different indices. This investigation underscores NH-associated anthropogenic effects on TE soil quality due to HM deposition, warranting proactive mitigation measures.

Bacterial indole-3-acetic acid: A key regulator for plant growth, plant-microbe interactions, and agricultural adaptive resilience

Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), a fundamental phytohormone categorized under auxins, not only influences plant growth and development but also plays a critical role in plant-microbe interactions. This study reviews the role of IAA in bacteria-plant communication, with a focus on its biosynthesis, regulation, and the subsequent effects on host plants. Bacteria synthesize IAA through multiple pathways, which include the indole-3-acetamide (IAM), indole-3-pyruvic acid (IPyA), and several other routes, whose full mechanisms remain to be fully elucidated. The production of bacterial IAA affects root architecture, nutrient uptake, and resistance to various abiotic stresses such as drought, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity, enhancing plant resilience and thus offering promising routes to sustainable agriculture. Bacterial IAA synthesis is regulated through complex gene networks responsive to environmental cues, impacting plant hormonal balances and symbiotic relationships. Pathogenic bacteria have adapted mechanisms to manipulate the host's IAA dynamics, influencing disease outcomes. On the other hand, beneficial bacteria utilize IAA to promote plant growth and mitigate abiotic stresses, thereby enhancing nutrient use efficiency and reducing dependency on chemical fertilizers. Advancements in analytical methods, such as liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry, have improved the quantification of bacterial IAA, enabling accurate measurement and analysis. Future research focusing on molecular interactions between IAA-producing bacteria and host plants could facilitate the development of biotechnological applications that integrate beneficial bacteria to improve crop performance, which is essential for addressing the challenges posed by climate change and ensuring global food security. This integration of bacterial IAA producers into agricultural practice promises to revolutionize crop management strategies by enhancing growth, fostering resilience, and reducing environmental impact.

Exploring geochemical distribution of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in wetland and agricultural soils and associated health risks

This study is carried out to understand the degree of soil pollution, transport mechanism, and distribution pattern of potentially toxic elements (PTEs), including the exposure effects on human health. Towards this, topsoil samples were collected from the Saman wetland and surrounding agricultural fields in the Gangetic plain, India. The results show that the mean concentration of Cu, Hg, Zn, Pb, Th, As, U, and Cd of both soil types exceed the natural background values. The multivariate analysis suggests the soils are moderately contaminated with As, Cd, Zn, Pb, and Hg (possibly from anthropogenic sources) and heavily contaminated with Th and U, likely ascended from geogenic sources. The GIS-based geostatistical plots coupled with principal component analysis (PCA) and hierarchical cluster analysis (HCA) apportion the sources of these toxic elements, which vary greatly and are closely correlated to the geogenic processes and local anthropogenic sources like pesticides and agrochemicals. The health risk assessment revealed that the cumulative hazard index (HI) values of PTEs are lower than the safe level, suggesting no significant noncarcinogenic effect for adults and children. However, excess cancer risk (ECR) values exceed the permissible limit (1 × 10-6), signifying that exposure to the toxic element concentration may cause cancer in the exposed population, most probably in the children subpopulation. Thus, this study highlights the importance of local compliance, ensuring the quality checks and management policies in using pesticides and other agrochemicals containing PTEs to control the imposed cancer risks.

Evidence for the accumulation of toxic metal(loid)s in agricultural soils impacted from long-term application of phosphate fertilizer

Phosphate fertilizers may contain elevated concentrations of toxic metals and metalloids and therefore, their excessive application can result in the accumulation of both phosphorus (P) and metal(loid)s in agricultural soils. This study aims to investigate the occurrence, distribution, and potential plant-availability of metal(loid)s originating from phosphate fertilizer in a long-term experimental field at the Tidewater Research Station in North Carolina, where topsoil (10-20 cm deep) and subsoil (up to 150 cm deep) samples were collected from five plots with consistent and individually different application rates of P-fertilizer since 1966. We conducted systematic analyses of P and metal(loid)s in bulk soils, in the plant available fraction, and in four sequentially extracted soil fractions (exchangeable, reducible, oxidizable, and residual). The results show that P content in topsoils were directly associated with the rate of P-fertilizer application (ρ = 1, p < 0.05). Furthermore, P concentrations were highly correlated with concentrations of Cd, U, Cr, V, and As in the bulk topsoil (ρ > 0.58, p < 0.05), as well as the potential plant-available fraction (ρ > 0.67, p < 0.01), indicating the accumulation of the fertilizer-derived toxic metal(loid)s in the topsoil. Significant correlations (p < 0.001) of metal(loid)s concentrations between the bulk soil and the potential plant-available fraction raises the possibility that P-fertilizer application could increase the accumulation of toxic metal(loid)s in plants, which could increase human exposure. Results from sequential leaching experiments revealed that large portions of the trace elements, in particular Cd, occur in the soluble (exchangeable and reducing) fractions of topsoil with higher P-fertilizer input, whereas the levels of redox-sensitive elements (As, V, U, Cr) were higher in the reducible and oxidizable fractions of the soils. Overall, the data presented in this study demonstrate the effect of long-term P-fertilizer application on the occurrence and accumulation of a wide range of toxic metal(loid)s in agricultural topsoil.

Determination of the Concentration of Heavy Metals in Artisanal Cheeses Produced in the Mexican States of Tabasco and Chiapas

Cheese consumption provides humans with minerals, proteins, carbohydrates, and vitamins. In Mexico, several cheese varieties are produced, each with its texture, scent, and flavor. The artisanal cheeses made in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas-including, among others, the varieties named crema (cream), doble crema (double cream), oaxaca, panela, fresco, bola, poro, cotija, and asadero-have a high demand in the domestic and foreign markets. The intensification of anthropic activity in these states causes an increased emission to the environment of contaminants like heavy metals, which could reach human foodstuffs through the food chains. In particular, heavy metal contents in cheeses consumed daily by these states' local populations might represent a public health risk. Because of that, our objectives in this work were to determine the concentrations of lead, cadmium, nickel, copper, zinc, and iron in artisanal cheeses produced in the states of Tabasco and Chiapas and to determine the values of the hazard quotient (HQ), total hazard quotient (THQ), and cancer risk total (CRT) for adult and young men and women. The results of our analyses of cheese samples from the states of Tabasco and Chiapas showed that the average concentrations (mg kg-1) of cadmium (0.0023 ± 0.002, 0.0023 ± 0.002 mg kg-1, respectively, for each state), lead (0.0047 ± 0.00, 0.0051 ± 0.002), nickel (0.0039 ± 0.0046, 0.0031 ± 0.0039), copper (0.0199 ± 0.021, 0.0202 ± 0.022), zinc (0.1611 ± 0.18, 0.194 ± 0.21), and iron (61.84 ± 4.23, 65.76 ± 6.61 mg kg-1), the first three values lower than the limits established by the FAO/WHO and Codex Alimentarius. The value of THQ that we obtained was less than one, and that of CRT was within the limits established by the US-EPA, which means that the consumption of artisanal cheeses from Tabasco and Chiapas by humans does not imply a risk of disease or cancer.

Mycorrhized wheat and bean plants tolerate bismuth contaminated soil via improved metal detoxification and antioxidant defense systems

Contamination of agricultural fields with bismuth (Bi) reduces crop yield and quality. Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are known to enhance plant growth and crop production, even under stressful conditions such as soil contamination with heavy metals. The objective of this study was to investigate the effect of AMF on the mitigation of Bi-phytotoxicity in wheat (Triticum aestivum) and beans (Phaseolus vulgaris) and to provide a comprehensive evaluation of the physiological and biochemical basis for the growth and development of AMF-induced plants under Bi stress conditions. Wheat and bean were treated by Bi and AMF individually and in combination. Then the physiological and biochemical responses in the shoot and roots of the two crop species were studied. Evident retardations in plant growth and key photosynthesis-related parameters and accumulation of MDA, H2O2, as markers of oxidative stress, were observed in plants subjected to Bi. AMF colonization reduced the uptake and translocation of Bi in the plant organs by enhancing the exudation of polyphenols and organic acids into the rhizospheric soil. Mycorrhized wheat and bean plants were able to attenuate the effects of Bi by improving metal detoxification (phytochelatins, metallothionein, total glutathione, and glutathione-S-transferase activity) and antioxidant defense systems (both enzymatic and non-enzymatic) and maintaining C assimilation and nutrient status. The current results suggest the manipulation of AMF as a powerful approach to alleviate the phytotoxicity of Bi in legumes and grasses.

Improved efficiency of Sedum lineare (Crassulaceae) in remediation of arsenic-contaminated soil by phosphate-dissolving strain P-1 in association with phosphate rock

The selection of appropriate plants and growth strategies is a key factor in improving the efficiency and universal applicability of phytoremediation. Sedum lineare grows rapidly and tolerates multiple adversities. The effects of inoculation of Acinetobacter sp. phosphate solubilizing bacteria P-1 and application of phosphate rock (PR) as additives on the remediation efficiency of As-contaminated soil by S. lineare were investigated. Compared with the control, both the single treatment and the combination of inoculation with strain P-1 and application of PR improved the biomass by 30.7-395.5%, chlorophyll content by 48.1-134.8%, total protein content by 12.5-92.4% and total As accumulation by 45.1-177.5%, and reduced the As-induced oxidative damage. Inoculation with strain P-1 increased the activities of superoxide dismutases and catalases of S. lineare under As stress, decreased the accumulation of reactive oxygen species in plant tissues and promoted the accumulation of As in roots. In contrast, simultaneous application of PR decreased As concentration in S. lineare tissues, attenuated As-induced lipid peroxidation and improved As transport to shoots. In addition, the combined application showed the best performance in improving resistance and biomass, which significantly increased root length by 149.1%, shoot length by 33%, fresh weight by 395.5% and total arsenic accumulation by 159.2%, but decreased the malondialdehyde content by 89.1%. Our results indicate that the combined application of strain P-1 and PR with S. lineare is a promising bioremediation strategy to accelerate phytoremediation of As-contaminated soils.

Recovery of Phosphorus and Metals from the Ash of Sewage Sludge, Municipal Solid Waste, or Wood Biomass: A Review and Proposals for Further Use

This review provides an overview of methods to extract valuable resources from the ash fractions of sewage sludge, municipal solid waste, and wood biomass combustion. The resources addressed here include critical raw materials, such as phosphorus, base and precious metals, and rare earth elements for which it is increasingly important to tap into secondary sources in addition to the mining of primary raw materials. The extraction technologies prioritized in this review are based on recycled acids or excess renewable energy to achieve an optimum environmental profile for the extracted resources and provide benefits in the form of local industrial symbioses. The extraction methods cover all scarce and valuable chemical elements contained in the ashes above certain concentration limits. Another important part of this review is defining potential applications for the mineral residues remaining after extraction. Therefore, the aim of this review is to combine the knowledge of resource extraction technology from ashes with possible applications of mineral residues in construction and related sectors to fully close material cycle loops.

Distribution of cadmium and lead in soil-rice systems and their environmental driving factors at the island scale

Toxic elements, such as Cd and Pb are of primary concern for soil quality and food security owing to their high toxicity and potential for bioaccumulation. Knowledge of the spatial variability of Cd and Pb in soil-rice systems across the landscape and identification of their driving factors are prerequisites for developing appropriate management strategies to remediate or regulate these hazardous contaminants. Considering the role of rice (Oryza sativa) as a dietary staple in China, this study aimed to examine the distribution patterns and drivers of Cd and Pb in tropical soil-rice systems across Hainan Island. To achieve this goal, 229 pairs of representative paddy soil and rice samples combined with a set of environmental covariates at the island scale were systematically analyzed. Arithmetic mean values (AMs) of Cd and Pb in rice were 0.080 and 0.199 mg kg-1, and exceeded the standard limits by 27.1% and 22.7%, respectively. We found that the AMs of Cd and Pb concentrations in paddy soil were 0.294 and 43.0 mg kg-1. Additionally, Cd in 29.26% of soil samples and Pb in 11.35% of soil samples exceeded the risk screening value for toxic elements. The enrichment factor generally showed that soil Cd and Pb on Hainan Island were both moderately enriched. Results obtained from both Spearman's correlation and stepwise regression analyses suggest that the concentrations of soil Cd and Pb are significantly influenced by the soil Na and Fe concentrations. Specifically, an increment of 1 g kg-1 in soil Na caused a rise of soil Cd and Pb by 57.1 mg kg-1 and 34.4 mg kg-1, respectively, while an increase of 1 g kg-1 in soil Fe resulted in a rise by 25.0 mg kg-1 and 14.5 mg kg-1. Similarly for rice grains, an increment of 1 g kg-1 in soil Ca resulted in a rise of rice Pb by 30.8 mg kg-1, whereas an increase of 1 g kg-1 in soil Mg led to a decrease in rice Pb by 14.8 mg kg-1. However, no significant correlation between soil Se and rice Cd concentrations was found. Furthermore, the result of geographically weighted regression revealed that the impacts of soil Na, Ca, Fe, and Mg on rice Cd were more significant in the western region, whereas the effects of soil Na and Fe on rice Pb were stronger in the northeastern region. This study provides new insights for the identification of factors influencing the distribution and accumulation of Cd and Pb in tropical island agroecosystems.

Source identification and health risk assessment of heavy metals with mineralogy: the case of soils from a Chinese industrial and mining city

Understanding the precise sources of heavy metals (HMs) in soil and the contribution of these sources to health risks has positive effects in terms of risk management. This study focused on the HMs in the soil of five land uses in an industrial and mining city. The sources of HMs in soils were identified, and the soil mineralogical characteristics and health risks of HMs were discussed. The results showed that the HMs (Cu, Zn, Ni, Cd, Pb) found in the soil of the five land uses were affected by human activities. For example, the Cu in grassland, gobi beach, woodland, green belt, and farmland is 22.3, 3.5, 22.5, 16.7, and 21.3 times higher than the soil background values in Gansu Province, respectively. The Positive Matrix Factorization model (PMF) results revealed that traffic emissions and industrial and agricultural activities were the primary sources of HMs in the soil, with industrial sources accounting for the largest share at 55.79%. Furthermore, various characteristics proved that the studied HMs were closely related to smelting products. Concentration-oriented health risk assessments showed that HMs in the different soil types held non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks for children and adults. Contamination source-oriented health risk assessments of children and adults found that industrial activities controlled non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risks. This study highlighted the critical effects of smelting on urban soil and the contribution of pollution sources to health risks. Furthermore, this work is significant in respect of the risk control of HMs in urban soils.

Environmental behaviors of emerging contaminants in freshwater ecosystem dominated by submerged plants: A review

Persistent exposure of emerging contaminants (ECs) in freshwater ecosystem has initiated intense global concerns. Freshwater ecosystem dominated by submerged plants (SP-FES) has been widely constructed to control eutrophic water. However, the environmental behaviors (e.g. migration, transformation, and degradation) of ECs in SP-FES have rarely been concerned and summarized. This review briefly introduced the sources of ECs, the pathways of ECs entering into SP-FES, and the constituent elements of SP-FES. And then the environmental behaviors of dissolved ECs and refractory solid ECs in SP-FES were comprehensively summarized, and the feasibility of removing ECs from SP-FES was critically evaluated. Finally, the challenges and perspectives on the future development for ECs removal from SP-FES were prospected, giving possible research gaps and key directions. This review will provide theoretical and technical support for the effective removal of ECs in freshwater ecosystem, especially in SP-FES.

Triazine Herbicide and NPK Fertilizer Exposure: Accumulation of Heavy Metals and Rare Earth Elements, Effects on Cuticle Melanization, and Immunocompetence in the Model Species Tenebrio molitor

The increasing use of agrochemicals, including fertilizers and herbicides, has led to worrying metal contamination of soils and waters and raises serious questions about the effects of their transfer to different levels of the trophic web. Accumulation and biomagnification of essential (K, Na, Mg, Zn, Ca), nonessential (Sr, Hg, Rb, Ba, Se, Cd, Cr, Pb, As), and rare earth elements (REEs) were investigated in newly emerged adults of Tenebrio molitor exposed to field-admitted concentrations of a metribuzin-based herbicide and an NPK blend fertilizer. Chemical analyses were performed using inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) supported by unsupervised pattern recognition techniques. Physiological parameters such as cuticle melanization, cellular (circulating hemocytes), and humoral (phenoloxidase enzyme activity) immune responses and mass loss were tested as exposure markers in both sexes. The results showed that NPK fertilizer application is the main cause of REE accumulation in beetles over time, besides toxic elements (Sr, Hg, Cr, Rb, Ba, Ni, Al, V, U) also present in the herbicide-treated beetles. The biomagnification of Cu and Zn suggested a high potential for food web transfer in agroecosystems. Gender differences in element concentrations suggested that males and females differ in element uptake and excretion. Differences in phenotypic traits show that exposure affects metabolic pathways involving sequestration and detoxification during the transition phase from immature-to-mature beetles, triggering a redistribution of resources between sexual maturation and immune responses. Our findings highlight the importance of setting limits for metals and REEs in herbicides and fertilizers to avoid adverse effects on species that provide ecosystem services and contribute to soil health in agroecosystems.

Plant Growth Regulators with a Balanced Supply of Nutrients Enhance the Phytoextraction Efficiency of Parthenium hysterophorus for Cadmium in Contaminated Soil

Heavy metal contamination in soil, such as cadmium (Cd), poses a serious threat to global food security and human health. It must be managed using environmentally friendly and cost-effective technologies. Plants with high resistance to Cd stress and high biomass production could be potential candidates for the phytoremediation of Cd-contaminated soils to improve Cd phytoextraction. In this regard, the present study was carried out to determine the effect of gibberellic acid (GA₃), indole acetic acid (IAA), and fertilizers (N, P, and K) on Parthenium hysterophorus growth and biomass production as well as Cd phytoextraction capabilities. A pot experiment was conducted with various combinations of PGRs and fertilizers, with treatments arranged in five replicates using a completely randomized design. After harvesting, each plant was divided into various parts such as stems, roots, and leaves, and different growth, physiological, and biochemical parameters were recorded. Results showed that under Cd stress, growth, physiological, and biochemical parameters were all significantly decreased. With the combined application of plant growth regulators (GA₃ and IAA) and nutrients, Cd stress was alleviated and all parameters significantly improved. In comparison to the control treatment, the combined application of N + P + K + GA₃ + IAA resulted in the highest fresh and dry biomass production of the root (12.31 and 5.11 g pot^-1), shoot (19. 69 and 6.99 g pot^-1), leaves (16.56 and 7.09 g pot^-1), and entire plant (48.56 and 19.19 g pot^-1). Similarly, the same treatment resulted in higher chlorophyll a and b and total chlorophyll contents under Cd stress, which were 2.19, 2.03, and 3.21 times higher than the control, which was Cd stress without any treatment. The combination of N + P + K + GA₃ + IAA also resulted in the highest proline and phenolic contents. In the case of different enzyme activities, the combined application of N + P + K + GA₃ + IAA under Cd stress led to a high increase in catalase (2.5 times), superoxide (3.5 times), and peroxidase (3.7 times) compared to the control. With the combined application of N+ P+ K + GA₃ + IAA, the maximum values of BCF (8.25), BAC (2.6), and RF (5.14%) were measured for phytoextraction potential. On the basis of these findings, it is concluded that P. hysterophorus has a high potential to grow, produce the most biomass, and act as a Cd hyperaccumulator in Cd-contaminated soil.

Trace elements in Foodstuffs from the Mediterranean Basin-Occurrence, Risk Assessment, Regulations, and Prevention strategies: A review

Trace elements (TEs) are chemical compounds that naturally occur in the earth's crust and in living organisms at low concentrations. Anthropogenic activities can significantly increase the level of TEs in the environment and finally enter the food chain. Toxic TEs like cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury have no positive role in a biological system and can cause harmful effects on human health. Ingestion of contaminated food is a typical route of TEs intake by humans. Recent data about the occurrence of TEs in food available in the Mediterranean countries are considered in this review. Analytical methods are also discussed. Furthermore, a discussion of existing international agency regulations will be given. The risk associated with the dietary intake of TEs was estimated by considering consumer exposure and threshold values such as Benchmark dose lower confidence limit and provisional tolerable weekly intake established by the European Food Safety Authority and the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives, respectively. Finally, several remediation approaches to minimize TE contamination in foodstuffs were discussed including chemical, biological, biotechnological, and nanotechnological methods. The results of this study proved the occurrence of TEs contamination at high levels in vegetables and fish from some Mediterranean countries. Lead and cadmium are more abundant in foodstuffs than other toxic trace elements. Geographical variations in TE contamination of food crops clearly appear, with a greater risk in developing countries. There is still a need for the regular monitoring of these toxic element levels in food items to ensure consumer protection.

Ecological risk assessment and heavy metals accumulation in agriculture soils irrigated with treated wastewater effluent, river water, and well water combined with chemical fertilizers

Contaminated irrigation water can increase trace heavy metals concentration in agricultural soil. The present research aimed to investigate the effect of three types of irrigation water sources, including treated wastewater effluent, Gharasoo river water, and well water with chemical fertilizer, on the accumulation and ecological risk of heavy metals in agricultural soils. Soil samples were collected before and after crop irrigation to evaluate heavy metal concentrations. The samples were analyzed to determine the presence of arsenic, nickel, cadmium, iron, chromium, zinc, lead, copper, and manganese. Based on the results, the concentration of essential metals in the soil before the irrigation process was more than toxic metals. The different irrigation sources increased the concentration of all heavy metals in the soil, and the accumulation of Cr, Ni, and Cd significantly elevated more than others. Irrigation resources' effectiveness in transferring heavy metals to the soil was obtained as treated wastewater effluent < well water with fertilizer < river water. Furthermore, the potential ecological risk index (RI) for irrigated soil was in a high-risk category. Therefore, it is recommended that the river water should not be used to irrigate vegetables to the utmost possible. Finally, the low heavy metals concentration and the presence of nutrients in treated wastewater effluent make this source the most suited source of irrigation because it eliminates the need for chemical fertilizers by farmers and transfers fewer heavy metals to the soil.

Removing Mn, Cu and Fe from Real Wastewaters with Macrophytes: Reviewing the Relationship between Environmental Factors and Plants' Uptake Capacity

Heavy metal pollution creates environmental health concerns. Among these, iron (Fe), copper (Cu) and manganese (Mn) are commonly found in aquatic environments due to the release of wastewaters. Phytoremediation in hydroponics uses macrophytes to treat contaminated environments, and this is influenced by environmental factors. However, the relationship between these factors and the removal of Fe, Cu and Mn by macrophytes is not known. Therefore, a meta-analysis serves to determine the correlations between environmental factors and the removal of these metals in real wastewater by macrophytes, as well as to identify the role of different aquatic forms of macrophytes in phytoremediation. Emergent macrophytes had higher concentrations of manganese in their tissues, and higher bioconcentrations factor of iron and manganese than floating plants. Regardless of the biotope, higher concentrations of Fe and Cu decreased the ability of plants to bioconcentrate them. The correlations among exposure time, pH, dissolved oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus, photoperiod and metal phytoremediation by plants were also found. It can be concluded that the emergent macrophytes showed better performance in terms of the removal of Fe, Cu and Mn, and that the significant correlations between environmental factors and removal vary with the type of metal and the environmental factor analyzed.

Effects of microwave and plastic content on the sulfur migration during co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic

In order to reduce the risks of sulfur-containing contaminants present in biofuels, the effects of microwave and content of hydrogen donor on the cracking of C-S bonds and the migration of sulfur were studied by co-pyrolysis of biomass and plastic. The synergistic mechanism of microwave and hydrogen donor was explored from the perspective of deducing the evolution of sulfur-containing compounds based on microwave thermogravimetric analysis. By combining temperature-weight curves, it was found that microwaves and hydrogen radicals promoted the cracking of sulfur-containing compounds and increased the mass loss of biomass during pyrolysis. The mixing ratio of hydrogen donor (plastic) was the key parameter resulting in the removal of sulfur from oil. By adjusting the mixing ratio, the yield of co-pyrolyzed oil was three times higher than that of cow dung pyrolysis alone and the relative removal rate of sulfur reached 73.67%. The relative content of sulfur in the oil was reduced by 73.77% due to the escape of sulfur-containing gases (H₂S, COS and C₂H₅SH) and the formation of sulfate crystals in the char. Microwave selectively heated sulfur-containing organics and hydrogen radicals stimulated the breaking of C-S bonds, which improved the cracking efficiency of the oil. This breaking will provide a theoretical and technological reference for the environmentally friendly treatment of biomass and biofuels.

A hybrid framework for delineating the migration route of soil heavy metal pollution by heavy metal similarity calculation and machine learning method

Soil heavy metal contamination was a global environmental issue that posed adverse impacts on ecological and human health risks. The controlling of soil heavy metal is mainly focused on the emission source and pipe-end treatment, less is known about the intermediate controlling process. The migration route of heavy metals exhibited the spatial evolution of pollutants from the sources to the pipe-end, which provided the more reasonable location for the target-oriented treatment of soil heavy metal. Here, we proposed a new view of heavy metal similarity, which quantitatively expressed how closely of the contaminations between the study area and the test areas. We found that the similarity of different heavy metals was unequally distributed across locations that were related with five main sources, namely agricultural activities, natural sources, traffic emissions, industrial activities, and other sources. Based on the similarity, a state-of-the-art machine learning method was applied to delineate the migration route of soil heavy metals. Thereinto, As was concentrated around livestock farms, and its migration route was close to the water system. Cd migration route was over-dispersed in the areas where located mine fields and chemical plants. Migration routes of Hg and Pb were along rivers, which were related to agricultural activities and natural sources. Overall, the perspective on similarity and migration routes provided theoretical basis and method to alleviate soil heavy metal pollution at regional scale and can be extended across largescale regions.

Congener-specificity, dioxygenation dependency and association with enzyme binding for biodegradation of polybrominated diphenyl ethers by typical aerobic bacteria: Experimental and theoretical studies

Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are a group of organic pollutants that have attracted much concerns of scientific community over the ubiquitous distribution, chemical persistence and toxicological risks in the environment. Though a great number of aerobic bacteria have been isolated for the rapid removal of PBDEs, the knowledge about biodegradation characteristics and mechanism is less provided yet. Herein, the congener-specificity of aerobic biodegradation of PBDEs by typical bacteria, i.e. B. xenovorans LB400 was identified with the different biodegradation kinetics, of which the changes were largely hinged on the bromination pattern. The more bromination isomerically at ortho-sites other than meta-sites or the single bromination at one of aromatic rings might always exert the positive effect. The biodegradation of PBDEs should be thermodynamically constrained to some extent because the calculated Gibbs free energy changes of initial dioxygenation by quantum chemical method increased with the increase of bromination. Within the transition state theory, the high correlativity between the apparent biodegradation rates and Gibbs free energy changes implied the predominance and rate-limiting character of initial dioxygenation, while the regioselectivity of dioxygenation at the ortho/meta-sites was also manifested for the more negative charge population. The molecular binding with the active domain of dioxygenase BphA1 in aerobe was firstly investigated using docking approach. As significantly illustrated with the positive relationship, the higher binding affinity with BphA1 should probably signify the more rapid biodegradation. Besides the edge-on π-π stacking of PBDEs with F227 or Y277 and π-cation formulation with histidines (H233, H239) in BphA1, the reticular hydrophobic contacts appeared as the major force to underpin the high binding affinity and rapid biodegradation of PBDEs. Overall, the experimental and theoretical results would not only help understand the aerobic biodegradation mechanism, but facilitate enhancing applicability or strategy development of engineering bacteria for bioremediation of PBDEs in the environment.

Effect of phosphorus fertilizer on phytoextraction using Ricinus communis L. in Cu and Cd co-contaminated soil

Mining activities have led to Cu and Cd contaminated of surrounding agricultural soil. To decrease the Cu and Cd accumulation in crops, the Ricinus communis L. (castor) has been used for phytoremediation. A pot experiment was served to investigate the effect of phosphate fertilizer (Ca(H₂PO₄)₂) on the growth and Cu/Cd uptake of castor in contaminated soil. The results showed that the application of P fertilizer improved the leaf cell morphology, decreased the malonaldehyde (MDA) content of castor leaves, and increased the plant biomass (28.2-34.2%). Besides, phosphate fertilizer still facilitated accumulation Cu and Cd by castor. The addition of phosphate fertilizer increased the contents of Cu in the root of castor, improved the bioconcentration factor (BCF) of Cu, and observably enhanced the accumulation of Cu (up to 201 μg/plant) in castor. Applying phosphorus increased the percentage of residual Cd, diminished the percentage of acid extractable Cd in soil, and the accumulation of Cd in castor was not significantly increased. These results suggest that phosphorus alleviated the stress of heavy metals on castor leaves and enhanced the accumulation of Cu and Cd in castor by promoting the growth of castor.

Effects of anthropogenic and natural environmental factors on the spatial distribution of trace elements in agricultural soils

The concentrations of trace elements in agricultural soils directly affect the ecological security and quality of agricultural products. A comprehensive study aimed at quantitatively analyze the effects of anthropogenic and natural environmental factors on the spatial distribution of heavy metals (HMs) and selenium (Se) in agricultural soils in a typical grain producing area of China. Factors considered in this study were parent rock, soil physicochemical properties, topography, precipitation, mine activity, and vegetation. Results showed that the median values of Zn, Cd, Cr, and Cu of 111 topsoil samples exceeded the background values of Guangxi province but were lower than the relevant national soil quality standards, and 85% of soil samples were classified as having rich Se levels (0.40 -3.0 mg kg^-1). The potential ecological risk index of soil heavy metals as a whole was low, with Cd in 9% of the samples posing moderate ecological risk. The concentrations of heavy metals and Se were relatively high in soils from shale rock. Soil properties, mainly Fe₂O₃ and Mn played a dominant role on soil HMs and Se concentrations. Based on GeoDetector, we found that the interaction effects of two factors on the spatial differentiation of soil HMs and Se were greater than their sum effect. Among the factors, Mn enhanced the explanatory power of the model the most when interacting with other factors for soil Zn; the greatest interactive effect was between distance from mining area and Mn for Cd (q = 0.70); Fe₂O₃ significantly promoted the spatial differentiation of soil Cr, Cu and Se when interacting with other factors (q > 0.50). These findings contribute to a better understanding of the factors that drive the distribution of HMs and Se in agricultural soils.

Effect of phosphorus sources on growth and cadmium accumulation in wheat under different soil moisture levels

Both cadmium (Cd) toxicity and water limited stress in crop plants are serious concerns worldwide while little is known about the impact of various phosphorus (P) sources on Cd accumulation in cereals especially under water limited stress. A study was conducted to explore the efficiency of three frequently available P fertilizers on Cd accumulation in wheat under different soil moisture levels. Three different P sources including diammonium phosphate (DAP), single super phosphate (SSP), and nitrophos (NP) were applied in the soil with three levels (0, 50 and 100 mg/kg). The drought stress was applied to half treatments during the latter growth stages of wheat and plants were harvested at maturity. The results demonstrated that water-limited stress decreased the growth and yield of plants than respective treatments without water stress. P supply increased the growth of wheat irrespective of water-limited stress. The effect on growth and yield varied with the sources and levels of P and maximum effects was observed in DAP treatment (100 mg/kg). The P amendments enhanced the leaf photosynthesis and activities of SOD, POD, CAT and decreased the leaf oxidative burst. Water limited stress enhanced the Cd concentrations in shoots, roots, and grains whereas P amendments minimized the Cd concentrations and enhanced the P concentrations in these parts of plants. The results obtained demonstrated that P supply in the form of DAP might be effective in minimization of Cd in grains and can be used for safe cultivation of metal-contaminated soils.

Risk assessment and early warning of the presence of heavy metal pollution in strawberries

Heavy metal pollution is a major threat to agricultural produce and it can pose potential ecological risks which subsequently impacts on human health. Strawberries are an economically important produce of China. The intrinsic link of heavy metal pollution risk in the soil-strawberry ecosystem is of concern. In this study, the pollution index of heavy metal pollutants in farmlands of different provinces were evaluated, and the results showed significantly high levels of cadmium. In addition, Nemerow integrated pollution index analysis showed that low-pollution farmlands only accounted for 14.07% of the total arable land area. Then, the transfer factors were used to calculate the migration of heavy metals from the soil into strawberries. The results showed that cadmium and nickel were relatively high in strawberries from the Guangxi province. Similar results were found for mercury in Jiangxi Province. The pollution index of single food pollution also showed that mercury in strawberries from Jiangxi Province was at a moderate pollution level. The comprehensive pollution index indicated that heavy metal pollution in strawberries in Central China may be severe. In addition, spatial clustering analysis showed that cadmium, chromium, lead, arsenic and zinc in strawberries had significant hotspot clustering in central, south and southwest China. Finally, our studies also suggested that the risk of carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic diseases was higher in the (2, 4] years age group than in other age groups. People in Yunnan Province were also found to have a higher non-carcinogenic risk than those in other provinces and cities in China. This study provides a comprehensive view of the potential risks of heavy metal contamination in strawberries, which could provide assistance in the design of regulatory and risk management programs for chemical pollutants in strawberries, thus ensuring the safety of consumption of these edible fruits.

Electrochemical phosphorus leaching from digested anaerobic sludge and subsequent nutrient recovery

With the rising concern over the depletion of phosphorus rock, phosphorus recovery from wastewater has become a key step for sustainable economy. Herein, simultaneous phosphorus leaching and nutrient recovery were accomplished in an electrochemical nutrient recovery cell (ENRC) treating digested anaerobic sludge. The anode reaction of water electrolysis lowered the sludge pH from 8.0 to 2.0 at a current density of 25 A m^-2, elevating the PO₄^3--P concentration from 27.72 to 253.47 mg L^-1, comparable to that from direct acid leaching. The released PO₄^3--P was transferred to the cathode chamber for recovery, where PO₄^3--P recovery efficiency was enhanced from 42.0% to 90.3% by 0.26 M HCl catholyte acidification. The ENRC recovered 90-98% of the coexisting NH₄⁺-N in the sludge. Increasing current density accelerated both phosphorus leaching and PO₄^3--P & NH₄⁺-N recovery, but at the expense of a higher energy consumption. After five consecutive cycles of operation, the PO₄^3--P and NH₄⁺-N concentrations reached 404.56 and 3493.56 mg L^-1, respectively, at a normalized energy consumption of 229.20 ± 30.13 kWh kg^-1 P or 25.67 ± 3.07 kWh kg ^-1 N. At pH 8.5, 99% of the recovered aqueous PO₄^3--P in the recovery solution precipitated, mainly as calcium phosphate that can have a good soil phosphorus availability. The results of this study have provided a foundation for further exploration of electrochemically leaching P from waste sludge with simultaneous nutrient recovery.

Effects of La2O3 nanoparticles and bulk-La2O3 on the development of Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen and respective nutrient element concentration

Nanoparticles (NPs) have been progressively applied in the last decades, which may impact the environment. Synthesis of pigments, growing, and nutrient element uptake by plants can also be affected by NPs. The influence of lanthanum oxide nanoparticles (La₂O₃ NPs) on growth, pigment synthesis, and nutrient element uptake by Pfaffia glomerata (Spreng.) Pedersen, a medicinal plant native in South America, was evaluated in the present study. P. glomerata plantlets were cultivated for 28 days in the absence (control) and presence of 100, 200, and 400 mg L^-1 of La₂O₃ NPs or bulk-La₂O₃ (b-La₂O₃) at the same cultivation conditions. Root development, aerial part growth, and pigment concentration in plants were affected by b-La₂O₃ and La₂O₃ NPs, mainly by La₂O₃ NPs. In spite of alteration of nutrient element concentration observed for the 100 and 200 mg L^-1 of La₂O₃ NPs or b-La₂O₃ treatments, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, La, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, S, and Zn determination in stems and leaves revealed drastically and similar decrease of these elements in plants cultivated in the presence of 400 mg L^-1 of La₂O₃ NPs or b-La₂O₃. Element distribution (mapping) determined by using laser ablation inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry in leaves of plants submitted to treatment with 400 mg L^-1 of b-La₂O₃ or La₂O₃ NPs showed differences in the distribution of elements, indicating distinct effects of b-La₂O₃ and La₂O₃ NPs on P. glomerata. As such, this study demonstrated that La₂O₃ NPs may impact plant growth. However, more investigations are necessary for better understanding of the effect of La₂O₃ on plants, including a broader range of concentration.

Assessment of heavy metals should be performed before the development of the selenium-rich soil: A case study in China

The use of selenium (Se)-rich soils in China is an effective method for rural revitalization, but assessment of heavy metals is essential prior to the development of Se-rich soils. This study was focused on the Jiangjin district, a typical Se-rich area located in Sichuan Basin of China, to investigate contamination, influencing factors, and sources of As, Cr, Cu, Cd, Ni, Pb, Sb, and Zn based on 156 topsoil samples. This study analyzed and compared the enrichment factor (EF), Nemerow index (P_N), geographical information system (GIS), and positive matrix factorization (PMF). Results demonstrate that the average values of As, Cu, Cd, Sb, and Zn in topsoil were higher than the soil background values of western Chongqing by approximately 1.75, 1.11, 1.27, 1.71, and 2.58 times, respectively, indicating that some heavy metals have been enriched in the soils. The polluted areas of As, Cu, Cd, and Zn in topsoil were mainly distributed in the northern and central Jiangjin district, whereas high-Sb soils were located in the southeast. The Cr, Cu, Cd, Pb, and Sb were concentrated in Se-rich soils, indicating that heavy metals pollution should be carefully considered for the utilization of Se-rich soils. Four potential sources of heavy metals were found in this study area: 1) the parent materials (Cr, Ni, Cu); 2) industrial activities with high coal consumption (As); 3) mechanical and chemical industrial activities (Zn, Sb); and 4) transportation and agricultural activities (Pb, Cd). These observations provide a scientific basis for the development, utilization, and protection of Se-rich soil resources.

Screening and evaluation of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria isolated from aquaculture ponds in a step-by-step strategy as potential biofertilizer

AIMS

The application of phosphate-solubilizing bacteria (PSB) has received little attention in aquaculture. In addition, the low efficiency of PSB as a biofertilizer in farm conditions is a major concern. Therefore, this study aims to isolate the PSB from sediment of earthen fishponds and evaluate with a more appropriate approach to ensure their effectiveness in increasing the bioavailability of phosphorus (P) in farm conditions.

METHODS AND RESULTS

PSB was first isolated and selected using the National Botanical Research Institute's Phosphate (NBRIP) medium-containing tri-calcium phosphate (TCP) in solid and liquid media. Among 96 strains that were isolated, 11 strains identified by 16 s rRNA, belonging to the genera Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter, showed a higher ability to release P from TCP (48-170 mg L^-1 ). Then, the efficiency of 11 strains was evaluated by combining different criteria. Among 11 selected strains, based on the ability to dissolve TCP and Ca-Phytate in culture medium, release P in sediment microcosm, and growth in a wide range of environmental conditions in fishponds, especially optimum growth at 4°C and pH above 8, Ps. deceptionensis strain Persian10 was selected as the most efficient strain for testing in aquarium conditions. In the last step, incubation of Persian10 in aquarium sediment (sterilized under gamma-ray) increased soluble P and had an impact on calcium phosphate, organic P and alkaline phosphatase activity; however, Persian10 had no impact on the concentration of iron phosphate and aluminium phosphate.

CONCLUSIONS

Persian 10 strain can be considered a bio-fertilizer candidate in earthen fishponds as it expressed the ability to solubilize P in different conditions.

SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY

It is very important to evaluate PSB in an appropriate process using a combination of different criteria to ensure optimal performance of PSB in farm conditions.

Transcriptome analysis provides new insight into the distribution and transport of selenium and its associated metals in selenium-rich rice

Selenium is an essential trace element for humans and obtained from diary diets. The consumption of selenium-rich agricultural food is an efficient way to obtain selenium, but the quality and safety of selenium-rich agro-food are always affected by their associated heavy metals, even poses a potential threaten to human health. In this research, a sampling survey of heavy metals contents in selenium-rich rice was conducted, 182 sets of selenium-rich rice samples were collected from five selenium-rich rice-producing areas of China, and the accumulation of selenium and cadmium were found to be associated in rice and soil. Subsequently, a pot experiment was performed in the greenhouse via treating the soil samples with 12 different concentrations of selenium and heavy metals, and the contents of selenium and cadmium in rice grain were confirmed to be significantly associated. Moreover, transcriptome analysis revealed that the up-regulation of transporter-coding may promote the absorption of selenium and cadmium. The expression of antioxidant-coding genes and cadmium chelator transporter coding-genes was up-regulated to reduce the toxicity of cadmium. Meanwhile, the up-regulation of key genes of the ascorbic acid-glutathione metabolic pathway were responsible for the association between selenium and cadmium in Se-rich rice. Our work suggested the correlation between selenium and cadmium accumulation in selenium-rich rice, clarified their accumulation mechanism, provides a direction for the scientific production of selenium-rich agro-foods.

Phosphate fertilizers facilitated the Cd contaminated soil remediation by sepiolite: Cd mobilization, plant toxicity, and soil microbial community

In-situ immobilization does not remove Cd from the contaminated soil. It is vital to investigate the effects of fertilizers on soil Cd mobility during remediation with amendments. In the current study, a pot experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of calcium magnesium phosphate (CMP) and calcium superphosphate (SSP) on the remediation of Cd-contaminated soil by sepiolite. We mainly focused on changes in soil Cd immobilization, plant toxicity, and soil microbial communities after applying two phosphates during Cd-contaminated soil remediation by sepiolite. The results demonstrated that sepiolite decreased Cd concentration in brown rice, straw, and roots by 32.66%, 38.89%, and 30.94%, respectively. During soil remediation by sepiolite, the Cd concentrations of brown rice and straw were not affected by CMP or SSP, except for the treatment with sepiolite plus high-dose CMP. Sepiolite significantly decreased HCl-extractable Cd and DTPA-extractable Cd by 32.21% and 10.50%, respectively. During soil remediation by sepiolite, the HCl-extractable and DTPA-extractable Cd further decreased with CMP or SSP. The decreasing amplitude with CMP was 40.57-72.60% and 7.05-14.53%, and that of SSP was 37.68-59.66% and 20.71-25.07%, respectively. The superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase activities, and malondialdehyde concentration in rice roots decreased inordinately with the addition of sepiolite, CMP, and SSP, indicating that the application of sepiolite, CMP, or SSP alleviated Cd-induced rice root stress and protected rice roots from Cd toxicity. Alpha diversity estimators (including the Chao, ACE, and Shannon indices) indicated that sepiolite, CMP, or SSP applications had no adverse effects on soil bacterial richness and diversity. Hierarchical clustering analysis revealed that the two phosphate fertilizers and sepiolite were the main factors affecting changes in the bacterial communities structure. Redundancy analysis revealed that soil pH, Eh, and soil-extractable Cd were critical factors affecting the structure of the bacterial communities.

Eutrophication and sediment-water exchange of total petroleum hydrocarbons and heavy metals of Hashilan wetland, a national heritage in NW Iran

The heavy metal(loid)s concentrations in water and sediments were analyzed in the Hashilan wetland to assess the spatial distribution, pollution status, fate, partitioning, and ecological risk and also to identify the heavy metal(loid)s sources in sediments using PMF (Positive Matrix Factorization) and APCs-MLR (absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression) receptor models. According to the pollution indices, (Ni, Cu, Cr, Mo), and (Zn, Cr, and Cu) are considered the most important pollutants in sediments and water, respectively. Ni, Cr, and Cu are the main contributors to ecological risks in sediments of some stations. The potential ecological risk assessment proposed low ecological risk in water of the study area. Higher distribution coefficient (Kp) values of Ni, Cr, Mn, Cu, Co, Pb, As, and Zn indicated the majority of these heavy metals present in the sediments; whereas, the majority of Cd concentration occurs in water. PMF and APCs-MLR results indicated the natural sources were the main factors affecting the concentrations of Ni, Cr, Zn, Al, Co, Fe, Pb, As, Cd and somewhat Cu. Mixed natural and agricultural activities are the main sources of Mo, and somewhat Cu. According to the results, there is low pollution of TPH (total petroleum hydrocarbons) in the sediment samples. Also, phosphate (PO42-) and nitrate (NO3-) concentrations were below the recommended permissible limits at all sampling sites except the S8 station for NO3-.

Diverse responses of pqqC- and phoD-harbouring bacterial communities to variation in soil properties of Moso bamboo forests

Phosphate‐mobilizing bacteria (PMB) play a critical role in the regulation of phosphorus availability in the soil. The microbial genes pqqC and phoD encode pyrroloquinoline quinone synthase and bacterial alkaline phosphatase, respectively, which regulate inorganic and organic phosphorus mobilization, and are therefore used as PMB markers. We examined the effects of soil properties in three Moso bamboo forest sites on the PMB communities that were profiled using high‐throughput sequencing. We observed differentiated responses of pqqC‐ and phoD‐harbouring PMB communities to various soil conditions. There was significant variation among the sites in the diversity and structure of the phoD‐harbouring community, which correlated with variation in phosphorus levels and non‐capillary porosity; soil organic carbon and soil water content also affected the structure of the phoD‐harbouring community. However, no significant difference in the diversity of pqqC‐harbouring community was observed among different sites, while the structure of the pqqC‐harbouring bacteria community was affected by soil organic carbon and soil total nitrogen, but not soil phosphorus levels. Overall, changes in soil conditions affected the phoD‐harbouring community more than the pqqC‐harbouring community. These findings provide a new insight to explore the effects of soil conditions on microbial communities that solubilize inorganic phosphate and mineralize organic phosphate.

Phosphorus confers tolerance against manganese toxicity in Prunus persica by reducing oxidative stress and improving chloroplast ultrastructure

In this study, we evaluated the mitigative role of phosphorus (P) in terms of manganese (Mn) toxicity in peach (Prunus persica L.) plants. Ten-day-old seedlings were treated with excess Mn (1 mM MnSO₄) alone and in combination with different P levels (100, 150, 200 and 250 μM KH₂PO₄) in half-strength Hoagland medium. The results demonstrated that Mn toxicity plants accumulated a significant amount of Mn in their tissues, and the concentration was higher in roots than in leaves. The accumulated Mn led to a considerable reduction in plant biomass, water status, chlorophyll content, photosynthetic rate, and disrupted the chloroplast ultrastructure by increasing oxidative stress (H₂O₂ and O₂^•-). However, P supplementation dramatically improved plant biomass, leaf relative water and chlorophyll contents, upregulating the ascorbate-glutathione pool and increasing the activities of antioxidant enzymes (superoxide dismutase; peroxidase dismutase; ascorbate peroxidase; monodehydroascorbate reductase; dehydroascorbate reductase), thus reducing oxidative damage as evidenced by lowering H₂O₂ and O₂^•- staining intensity. Moreover, P application markedly restored stomatal aperture and improved chloroplast ultrastructure, as indicated by the improved performance of photosynthetic machinery. Altogether, our findings suggest that P (250 μM) has a great potential to induce tolerance against Mn toxicity by limiting Mn accumulation in tissues, upregulating antioxidant defense mechanisms, alleviating oxidative damage, improving chloroplast ultrastructure and photosynthetic performance in peach plants.

Distribution, ecological risk assessment and source identification of pollutants in soils of different land-use types in degraded wetlands

BACKGROUND

Urbanization and global warming are generating ecological degradation and land pattern alteration problems in natural wetlands. These changes are greatly affecting the ecological services of wetlands. Therefore, there is an urgent need to explore the relationship between pollutants and land-use type for wetland restoration purposes. Zaozhadian Lake is a freshwater wetland in the North China Plain, which is facing degradation and land-use types changes. An experiment for analyzing soil pollutants was conducted in three land-use types of farmland, lake, and ditch in the Zaozhadian Lake. The aims of this study were to identify the distribution, pollution degree, and sources of pollutants in different land-use types, and to explore the influence of land-use type changes on contamination.

METHODS

In this study, surface sediments (0-10 cm) of three land types (farmland, lake, and ditch) in Zaozhadian Lake were collected, and heavy metals (Cu, Ni, Zn, Pb, Cd, Cr, Hg), As, total nitrogen (TN), total phosphorus (TP) and organic matter (OM) were determined. Kriging interpolation was used to visualize the pollutants distribution. The pollution degree of TN and TP was evaluated by the Nemerow pollution index. The pollution of heavy metals and As was evaluated by the geological accumulation index (I_geo ) and the potential ecological risk index (RI). Then, dual hierarchical clustering analysis and the principal component analysis were performed to further analyze the impact of land type changes on pollutants.

RESULTS

The heavy metal contents in the farmland were higher than other areas, while the TN (3.71 ± 1.03 g kg^-1) and OM (57.17 ± 15.16 g kg^-1) in lake sediments were higher than that in other regions. Farmland, lake, and ditches had low ecological risks, with RI values of 84.21, 71.34, and 50.78, respectively. The primary heavy metal pollutants are Pb, Cu, and Ni. Furthermore, Cu, As, Ni, Pb, and Zn were primarily derived from agriculture pollution, the source of Cd was the industrial pollution, and Cr mainly originated from natural sources. Nutrients primarily came from the decomposition of aquatic animals, plants, and human-related activities. When the lake area was converted into farmland, the heavy metal concentrations in the soils increased and the TN and OM decreased. Based on the results, this study put forward key strategies including the adjustment of the land-use type and restriction of the entry of pollutants into the wetland ecosystems in the Zaozhadian Lake. More attention should be paid to the impact of land-use type change on pollutants in wetlands.

Fractionation, source, and ecological risk assessment of heavy metals in cropland soils across a 100-year reclamation chronosequence in an estuary, South China

Coastal reclamation for cropland has led to the accumulation of heavy metals in soils, bringing about pervasive and severe risks for environment and human health. However, less is known about the influence of long-term reclamation on heavy metals risk, mobility and bioavailability in cropland soil. In this study, we determined six heavy metals (Cd, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb) and their fractionations in soils from five croplands across a 100-year reclamation chronosequence in the Pearl River estuary. Results showed that across five reclaimed soils, Cd posed seriously ecological risk and bioavailability according to assessments based on both total contents (single-metal pollution index: Cd > Cu > Zn > Ni > Cr > Pb) and fractionations (risk assessment code: Cd > Zn > Cu > Ni > Pb > Cr). Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn and Pb posed slightly to moderately ecological risks, and were mainly bound to residual (73.70%) and reducible (15.86%) fractions with lower mobility and bioavailability. With the highest risks level, mobility, toxicity and bioavailability (5.67% exchangeable and 11.75% carbonate fractions bound), Cd was identified as the main pollution factor in study area. Principal component analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis revealed that anthropogenic reclamation activities (including phosphate fertilizers, pesticides and sewage irrigation) were the major sources of these heavy metals. Long-term reclamation activities induced the increases of soil organic matter, clay contents, total concentrations and non-residual fractions of heavy metals by 46.14%, 538.98%, 42.87% and 219.78%, respectively, demonstrating significant promotions in level and mobility of heavy metals due to longer-term agricultural activities, higher soil clay and organic matter content.

Cell cycle checkpoint control in response to DNA damage by environmental stresses

Being sessile organisms, plants are ubiquitously exposed to stresses that can affect the DNA replication process or cause DNA damage. To cope with these problems, plants utilize DNA damage response (DDR) pathways, consisting of both highly conserved and plant-specific elements. As a part of this DDR, cell cycle checkpoint control mechanisms either pause the cell cycle, to allow DNA repair, or lead cells into differentiation or programmed cell death, to prevent the transmission of DNA errors in the organism through mitosis or to its offspring via meiosis. The two major DDR cell cycle checkpoints control either the replication process or the G2/M transition. The latter is largely overseen by the plant-specific SOG1 transcription factor, which drives the activity of cyclin-dependent kinase inhibitors and MYB3R proteins, which are rate limiting for the G2/M transition. By contrast, the replication checkpoint is controlled by different players, including the conserved kinase WEE1 and likely the transcriptional repressor RBR1. These checkpoint mechanisms are called upon during developmental processes, in retrograde signaling pathways, and in response to biotic and abiotic stresses, including metal toxicity, cold, salinity, and phosphate deficiency. Additionally, the recent expansion of research from Arabidopsis to other model plants has revealed species-specific aspects of the DDR. Overall, it is becoming evidently clear that the DNA damage checkpoint mechanisms represent an important aspect of the adaptation of plants to a changing environment, hence gaining more knowledge about this topic might be helpful to increase the resilience of plants to climate change.
