Research status and prospects of organic photocatalysts in algal inhibition and sterilization: a review

An increasing amount of sewage has been discharged into water bodies in the progression of industrialization and urbanization, causing serious water pollution. Meanwhile, the increase of nutrients in the water induces water eutrophication and rapid growth of algae. Photocatalysis is a common technique for algal inhibition and sterilization. To improve the utilization of visible light and the conversion efficiency of solar energy, more organic photocatalytic materials have been gradually developed. In addition to ultraviolet light, partial infrared light and visible light could also be used by organic photocatalysts compared with inorganic photocatalysts. Simultaneously, organic photocatalysts also exhibit favorable stability. Most organic photocatalysts can maintain a high degradation rate for algae and bacteria after several cycles. There are various organic semiconductors, mainly including small organic molecules, such as perylene diimide (PDI), porphyrin (TCPP), and new carbon materials (fullerene (C60), graphene (GO), and carbon nanotubes (CNT)), and large organic polymers, such as graphite phase carbon nitride (g-C3N4), polypyrrole (PPy), polythiophene (PTH), polyaniline (PANI), and polyimide (PI). In this review, the classification and synthesis methods of organic photocatalytic materials were elucidated. It was demonstrated that the full visible spectral response (400-750 nm) could be stimulated by modifying organic photocatalysts. Moreover, some problems were summarized based on the research status related to algae and bacteria, and corresponding suggestions were also provided for the development of organic photocatalytic materials.

Research Progress on Inactivation of Bacteriophages by Visible-Light Photocatalytic Composite Materials: A Mini Review

Infectious diseases caused by waterborne viruses have attracted researchers' great attention. To ensure a safe water environment, it is important to advance water treatment and disinfection technology. Photocatalytic technology offers an efficient and practical approach for achieving this goal. This paper reviews the latest studies on visible-light composite catalysts for bacteriophage inactivation, with a main focus on three distinct categories: modified UV materials, direct visible-light materials and carbon-based materials. This review gives an insight into the progress in photocatalytic material development and offers a promising solution for bacteriophage inactivation.

Floating Carbon Nitride Composites for Practical Solar Reforming of Pre-Treated Wastes to Hydrogen Gas

Solar reforming (SR) is a promising green-energy technology that can use sunlight to mitigate biomass and plastic waste while producing hydrogen gas at ambient pressure and temperature. However, practical challenges, including photocatalyst lifetime, recyclability, and low production rates in turbid waste suspensions, limit SR's industrial potential. By immobilizing SR catalyst materials (carbon nitride/platinum; CN_x |Pt and carbon nitride/nickel phosphide; CN_x |Ni₂ P) on hollow glass microspheres (HGM), which act as floating supports enabling practical composite recycling, such limitations can be overcome. Substrates derived from plastic and biomass, including poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PET) and cellulose, are reformed by floating SR composites, which are reused for up to ten consecutive cycles under realistic, vertical simulated solar irradiation (AM1.5G), reaching activities of 1333 ± 240 µmol_H2 m^-2 h^-1 on pre-treated PET. Floating SR composites are also advantageous in realistic waste where turbidity prevents light absorption by non-floating catalyst powders, achieving 338.1 ± 1.1 µmol_H2 m^-2 h^-1 using floating CN_x versus non-detectable H₂ production with non-floating CN_x and a pre-treated PET bottle as substrate. Low Pt loadings (0.033 ± 0.0013% m/m) demonstrate consistent performance and recyclability, allowing efficient use of precious metals for SR hydrogen production from waste substrates at large areal scale (217 cm² ), taking an important step toward practical SR implementation.

Application of nanotechnology in air purifiers as a viable approach to protect against Corona virus

The outbreak of COVID-19 disease, the cause of severe acute respiratory syndrome, is considered a worldwide public health concern. Although studies indicated that the virus could spread through respiratory particles or droplets in close contact, current research have revealed that the virus stays viable in aerosols for several hours. Numerous investigations have highlighted the protective role of air purifiers in the management of COVID-19 transmission, however, there are still some doubts regarding the efficiency and safety of these technologies. According to those observations, using a proper ventilation system can extensively decrease the spread of COVID-19. However, most of those strategies are currently in the experimental stages. This review aimed at summarising the safety and effectiveness of the recent approaches in this field including using nanofibres that prevent the spread of airborne viruses like SARS-CoV-2. Here, the efficacy of controlling COVID-19 by means of combining multiple strategies is comprehensively discussed.

Can photocatalysis help in the fight against COVID-19 pandemic?

Mould fungi are serious threats to humans and animals (allergen) and might be the main cause of COVID-19-associated pulmonary aspergillosis. The common methods of disinfection are not highly effective against fungi due to the high resistance of fungal spores. Recently, photocatalysis has attracted significant attention towards antimicrobial action. Outstanding properties of titania photocatalysts have already been used in many areas, e.g., for building materials, air conditioner filters, and air purifiers. Here, the efficiency of photocatalytic methods to remove fungi and bacteria (risk factors for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 co-infection) is presented. Based on the relevant literature and own experience, there is no doubt that photocatalysis might help in the fight against microorganisms, and thus prevent the severity of COVID-19 pandemic.

Preparation of floating BiOCl0.6I0.4/ZnO photocatalyst and its inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa under visible light

Frequent occurrence of harmful algal blooms has already threatened aquatic life and human health. In the present study, floating BiOCl_0.6I_0.4/ZnO photocatalyst was synthesized in situ by water bath method, and and applied in inactivation of Microcystis aeruginosa under visible light. The composition, morphology, chemical states, optical properties of the photocatalyst were also characterized. The results showed that BiOCl_0.6I_0.4 exhibited laminated nanosheet structure with regular shape, and the light response range of the composite BZ/EP-3 (BiOCl_0.6I_0.4/ZnO/EP-3) was tuned from 582 to 638 nm. The results of photocatalytic experiments indicated that BZ/EP-3 composite had stronger photocatalytic activity than a single BiOCl_0.6I_0.4 and ZnO, and the removal rate of chlorophyll a was 89.28% after 6 hr of photocatalytic reaction. The photosynthetic system was destroyed and cell membrane of algae ruptured under photocatalysis, resulting in the decrease of phycobiliprotein components and the release of a large number of ions (K⁺, Ca²⁺ and Mg²⁺). Furthermore, active species trapping experiment determined that holes (h⁺) and superoxide radicals (·O₂^-) were the main active substance for the inactivation of algae, and the p-n mechanism of photocatalyst was proposed. Overall, BZ/EP-3 showed excellent algal removal ability under visible light, providing fundamental theories for practical algae pollution control.

A review on disinfection methods for inactivation of waterborne viruses

Water contamination is a global health problem, and the need for safe water is ever-growing due to the public health implications of unsafe water. Contaminated water could contain pathogenic bacteria, protozoa, and viruses that are implicated in several debilitating human diseases. The prevalence and survival of waterborne viruses differ from bacteria and other waterborne microorganisms. In addition, viruses are responsible for more severe waterborne diseases such as gastroenteritis, myocarditis, and encephalitis among others, hence the need for dedicated attention to viral inactivation. Disinfection is vital to water treatment because it removes pathogens, including viruses. The commonly used methods and techniques of disinfection for viral inactivation in water comprise physical disinfection such as membrane filtration, ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, and conventional chemical processes such as chlorine, monochloramine, chlorine dioxide, and ozone among others. However, the production of disinfection by-products (DBPs) that accompanies chemical methods of disinfection is an issue of great concern due to the increase in the risks of harm to humans, for example, the development of cancer of the bladder and adverse reproductive outcomes. Therefore, this review examines the conventional disinfection approaches alongside emerging disinfection technologies, such as photocatalytic disinfection, cavitation, and electrochemical disinfection. Moreover, the merits, limitations, and log reduction values (LRVs) of the different disinfection methods discussed were compared concerning virus removal efficiency. Future research needs to merge single disinfection techniques into one to achieve improved viral disinfection, and the development of medicinal plant-based materials as disinfectants due to their antimicrobial and safety benefits to avoid toxicity is also highlighted.

Antimicrobial Effectiveness of Innovative Photocatalysts: A Review

Waterborne pathogens represent one of the most widespread environmental concerns. Conventional disinfection methods, including chlorination and UV, pose several operational and environmental problems; namely, formation of potentially hazardous disinfection by-products (DBPs) and high energy consumption. Therefore, there is high demand for effective, low-cost disinfection treatments. Among advanced oxidation processes, the photocatalytic process, a form of green technology, is becoming increasingly attractive. A systematic review was carried out on the synthesis, characterization, toxicity, and antimicrobial performance of innovative engineered photocatalysts. In recent decades, various engineered photocatalysts have been developed to overcome the limits of conventional photocatalysts using different synthesis methods, and these are discussed together with the main parameters influencing the process behaviors. The potential environmental risks of engineered photocatalysts are also addressed, considering the toxicity effects presented in the literature.

Efficient visible light driven degradation of antibiotic pollutants by oxygen-doped graphitic carbon nitride via the homogeneous supramolecular assembly of urea

Graphitic carbon nitride (CN), as a non-metal material, has emerged as a promising photocatalyst to address environmental issues with the favorable band gap and chemical stability. The porous oxygen-doped CN nanosheets (CNO) were synthesized by an ecofriendly and efficient self-assembled approach using a sole urea as the precursor. The CNO photocatalysts were derived from the hydrogen-bonded cyanuric acid-urea supramolecular complex, which were obtained by pretreatment of urea at high temperature and pressure. The homogeneous supramolecular assembly was advantageous to the formation of uniform porous and oxygen-doped CN nanosheets. The formation process of the supramolecular intermediate and the CNO nanosheets were investigated. Moreover, doping amount of O in CNO could be controlled by the time of the high-pressure thermal polymerization of urea. The characterization results shown that the O atoms were successfully doped into the framework of CN by substitution the N atoms to form the C-O structures. The obtained CNO photocatalysts demonstrated the excellent visible-light photocatalytic performances for sulfamerazine (SMR) degradation, which was ascribed to synergistic interaction of porous structure and O doping. The degradation intermediates of SMR were identified and the degradation pathway were also proposed. Furthermore, density functional theory (DFT) calculations proved that O doping changed the electronic structure of CN, resulting in more easier to activate O₂. This work provides a novel perceptive for the development of high-performance nonmetal photocatalysts by using the homogeneous supramolecular assembly, which exhibits great potential in the environmental treatment.

Graphitic carbon nitride based immobilized and non-immobilized floating photocatalysts for environmental remediation

In solar photocatalysis, light utilization and recycling of powder from reaction solution are the main obstructions that hinder the photocatalytic efficacy of any photocatalyst. In this respect, a floatable system is effective for efficient solar photocatalysis by light utilization. Due to the maximum solar light absorption property, floating nanocomposite photocatalyst is an appealing substitute for effective wastewater treatment. Floating photocatalysts are a non-oxygenated and non-stirred solution that is a good light harvester, stable, non-toxic, biodegradable, naturally abundant in nature. They also have low density, a simple preparation process, no need to stir, and high porosity. Due to these characteristics, floating photocatalysts are widely favored and ideal candidates for practical environmental remediation. Several researchers have come up with new and innovative ways for immobilizing capable photocatalyst on a floatable substrate to produce floating nanocomposite photocatalytic material. In recent decades, g-C₃N₄-based floating photocatalysts have gained a lot of attention as g-C₃N₄ is a visible light active photocatalyst with unique and exceptional properties. It also has good photocatalytic activity in waste water treatment and environmental remediation. Many previous reports have studied the logical design and manufacturing method for heterojunction floating photocatalysts and immobilized floating photocatalysts. Based on those studies, we have focused on the g-C₃N₄ based immobilized and non-immobilized floating photocatalysts for pollutant degradation. We have also categorized immobilized floating photocatalyst based on several lightweight substrates such as expanded perlite and glass microbead. In addition, future challenges have been discussed to maximize solar light absorption and to improve the efficiency of broadband response floating photocatalysts. Floating photocatalysis is an advanced technique in energy conversion and environmental remediation thus requires special consideration.

Hydrodynamic zones and the influence of microorganisms on nitrogen transformation in the diverging area of branched rivers

Diverging area is widespread in river networks, and understanding its biogeochemical process characteristics is of great significance to river ecological restoration and environmental quality improvement. Microbial communities affected by hydrodynamics play an important role in biogeochemical processes, but their relationship in diverging area is little known. Here, the composition of microbial community and its feedback to hydrodynamics and nitrogen conversion in the diverging area of river networks were first studied by coupling ecological theory, biogeochemical theory, microbial DNA sequencing and mathematical model of water environment. The results showed that there were five hydrodynamic zones with significant velocity differences in the diverging area, namely low velocity zone, maximum velocity zone, stagnant zone, separation zone, and deflection zone. According to the flow velocity grouping, there were significant differences in the microbial diversity and abundance among low velocity group, maximum velocity group and stagnant group had significant differences (p < 0.05, stress = 0.1207). In the low velocity group, Firmicutes was the dominant phylum which had a highest abundance and may promot the conversion of organic nitrogen into ammonia nitrogen. In the maximum velocity group, Bdellovibrionota was the dominant phylum which had a highest abundance and may promot the conversion of nitrate and nitric oxide to nitrogen. In the stagnant zone, Methylomirabilota was the dominant phylum which had a highest abundance and may promot the conversion of nitrogen into nitrate and ammonium. In addition, dissolved oxygen was the most sensitive environmental factor for shaping microorganisms and nitrogen conversion in the diverging area of the river networks by canonical correlation analysis. The denitrifying bacteria Rhodocyclaceae, was shown to negatively correlated with the flow velocity. This research improves the scientific basis for the study of the ecosystem in river networks, which will guide the construction of river ecological projects.

Green aspects of photocatalysts during corona pandemic: a promising role for the deactivation of COVID-19 virus

The selection of a facile, eco-friendly, and effective methodology is the need of the hour for efficient curing of the COVID-19 virus in air, water, and many food products. Recently, semiconductor-based photocatalytic methodologies have provided promising, green, and sustainable approaches to battle against viral activation via the oxidative capabilities of various photocatalysts with excellent performance under moderate conditions and negligible by-products generation as well. Considering this, recent advances in photocatalysis for combating the spread of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) are inclusively highlighted. Starting from the origin to the introduction of the coronavirus, the significant potential of photocatalysis against viral prevention and -disinfection is discussed thoroughly. Various photocatalytic material-based systems including metal-oxides, metal-free and advanced 2D materials (MXenes, MOFs and COFs) are systematically examined to understand the mechanistic insights of virus-disinfection in the human body to fight against COVID-19 disease. Also, a roadmap toward sustainable solutions for ongoing COVID-19 contagion is also presented. Finally, the challenges in this field and future perspectives are comprehensively discussed involving the bottlenecks of current photocatalytic systems along with potential recommendations to deal with upcoming pandemic situations in the future.

Emerging 2D materials for antimicrobial applications in the pre- and post-pandemic era

Infectious diseases caused by viral or bacterial pathogens are one of the most serious threats to humanity. Moreover, they may lead to pandemics, as we have witnessed severely with the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Nanotechnology, including technological developments of nano-sized materials, has brought great opportunities to control the spreading of such diseases. In the family of nano-sized materials, two-dimensional (2D) materials with intrinsic physicochemical properties can efficiently favor antimicrobial activity and maintain a safer environment to protect people against pathogens. For this purpose, they can be used alone or combined for the disinfection process of microbes, antiviral or antibacterial surface coatings, air filtering of medical equipment like face masks, or antimicrobial drug delivery systems. At the same time, they are promising candidates to deal with the issues of conventional antimicrobial approaches such as low efficacy and high cost. This review covers the antiviral or antibacterial activities of 2D materials and highlights their current and possible future applications. Considering their intrinsic properties, 2D materials will become part of the leading antimicrobial technologies for combating future pandemics anytime soon.

Comparative effectiveness of membrane technologies and disinfection methods for virus elimination in water: A review

The pandemic of the 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) has brought viruses into the public horizon. Since viruses can pose a threat to human health in a low concentration range, seeking efficient virus removal methods has been the research hotspots in the past few years. Herein, a total of 1060 research papers were collected from the Web of Science database to identify technological trends as well as the research status. Based on the analysis results, this review elaborates on the state-of-the-art of membrane filtration and disinfection technologies for the treatment of virus-containing wastewater and drinking water. The results evince that membrane and disinfection methods achieve a broad range of virus removal efficiency (0.5-7 log reduction values (LRVs) and 0.09-8 LRVs, respectively) that is attributable to the various interactions between membranes or disinfectants and viruses having different susceptibility in viral capsid protein and nucleic acid. Moreover, this review discusses the related challenges and potential of membrane and disinfection technologies for customized virus removal in order to prevent the dissemination of the waterborne diseases.

Photocatalytic Inactivation of Viruses Using Graphitic Carbon Nitride-Based Photocatalysts: Virucidal Performance and Mechanism

The prevalence of lethal viral infections necessitates the innovation of novel disinfection techniques for contaminated surfaces, air, and wastewater as significant transmission media of disease. The instigated research has led to the development of photocatalysis as an effective renewable solar-driven technology relying on the reactive oxidative species, mainly hydroxyl (OH●) and superoxide (O2●−) radicals, for rupturing the capsid shell of the virus and loss of pathogenicity. Metal-free graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4), which possesses a visible light active bandgap structure, low toxicity, and high thermal stability, has recently attracted attention for viral inactivation. In addition, g-C3N4-based photocatalysts have also experienced a renaissance in many domains, including environment, energy conversion, and biomedical applications. Herein, we discuss the three aspects of the antiviral mechanism, intending to highlight the advantages of photocatalysis over traditional viral disinfection techniques. The sole agenda of the review is to summarize the significant research on g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for viral inactivation by reactive oxidative species generation. An evaluation of the photocatalysis operational parameters affecting viral inactivation kinetics is presented. An overview of the prevailing challenges and sustainable solutions is presented to fill in the existing knowledge gaps. Given the merits of graphitic carbon nitride and the heterogeneous photocatalytic viral inactivation mechanism, we hope that further research will contribute to preventing the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic and future calamities.

A review on the potential of photocatalysis in combatting SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater

Photocatalytic technology offers powerful virus disinfection in wastewater via oxidative capability with minimum harmful by-products generation. This review paper aims to provide state-of-the-art photocatalytic technology in battling transmission of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) in wastewater. Prior to that, the advantages and limitations of the existing conventional and advanced oxidation processes for virus disinfection in water systems were thoroughly examined. A wide spectrum of virus degradation by various photocatalysts was then considered to understand the potential mechanism for deactivating this deadly virus. The challenges and future perspectives were comprehensively discussed at the end of this review describing the limitations of current photocatalytic technology and suggesting a realistic outlook on advanced photocatalytic technology as a potential solution in dealing with similar upcoming pandemics. The major finding of this review including discovery of a vision on the possible photocatalytic approaches that have been proven to be outstanding against other viruses and subsequently combatting SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater. This review intends to deliver insightful information and discussion on the potential of photocatalysis in battling COVID-19 transmission through wastewater.

Crucial cytotoxic and antimicrobial activity changes driven by amount of doped silver in biocompatible carbon nitride nanosheets

The use of Ag-modified nanomaterials continues to attract attention in biological contamination control, their potential cytotoxicity is often overlooked. Herein, biocompatible carbon nitride is modified with 1 and 5 wt.% Ag and effects of different nanomaterial dose and Ag content on antimicrobial activity and cytotoxicity is studied. Pure Ag nanoparticles and AgNO₃ is tested for comparison, together with ten bacterial strains including pan-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cytotoxicity is then investigated in three adherent and two suspension human cell lines, and results confirm that cancer adherent cell lines are the most immune lines and human cervical adenocarcinoma cells (HeLa) are more resilient than human lung adenocarcinoma cells (A549). The HeLa remains over 90 % viable even after 24 -h treatment with the highest concentration of 5%Ag/g-C₃N₄ (300 mg L^-1) while A549 sustained viability only up to 100 mg L^-1. Higher concentrations then induce cytotoxicity and A549 cell viability decreases. Our results show the importance of complementary testing of cytotoxicity by LIVE/DEAD assay using flow cytometry with more different human cell lines, which might be less immune to tested nanomaterials than HeLa and A549. Combined controls of new antibacterial agent activity tests then provide increased knowledge of their biocompatibility.

Different inactivation behaviors and mechanisms of representative pathogens (Escherichia coli bacteria, human adenoviruses and Bacillus subtilis spores) in g-C3N4-based metal-free visible-light-enabled photocatalytic disinfection

Continuous economic loss and even human death caused by various microbial pathogens in drinking water call for the development of water disinfection systems with the features of environmentally friendly nature, high inactivation efficacy without pathogen regrowth, facile disinfection operation and low energy consumption. Alternatively, g-C₃N₄-based visible-light-enabled photocatalytic disinfection can meet the above requirements and thus has attracted increasing interest in recent years. Here, we explored for the first time the antimicrobial ability and mechanisms of a wide spectrum of representative pathogens ranging from bacteria (Escherichia coli), to viruses (human adenoviruses) and spores (Bacillus subtilis spores) by g-C₃N₄/Vis system with the assistance of two common oxidants (H₂O₂ and PMS), especially in a comparative perspective. Pristine g-C₃N₄ could achieve a complete inactivation of bacteria (5-log) within 150 min, but displayed negligible antimicrobial activity against human viruses and spores (< 0.5-log). Fortunately, simple addition of oxidants into the system could greatly enhance the inactivation of bacteria (5-log with PMS within 120 min) and human viruses (2.6-log with H₂O₂ within 150 min). Roles of reactive oxygen species were found to be quite different in the disinfection processes, depending on both types of chemical oxidants and microbial pathogens. Additionally, disinfection efficiency could be facilely and effectively improved by statistical optimization of two important operating factors (i.e., catalyst loading and oxidant addition). Selection of added oxidants was determined by not only the target pathogen but also the water matrix. As a proof of concept, this work can provide some meaningful and useful information for advancing the field of green and sustainable water disinfection.

Two-Dimensional Material-Based Biosensors for Virus Detection

Viral infections are one of the major causes of mortality and economic losses worldwide. Consequently, efficient virus detection methods are crucial to determine the infection prevalence. However, most detection methods face challenges related to false-negative or false-positive results, long response times, high costs, and/or the need for specialized equipment and staff. Such issues can be overcome by access to low-cost and fast response point-of-care detection systems, and two-dimensional materials (2DMs) can play a critical role in this regard. Indeed, the unique and tunable physicochemical properties of 2DMs provide many advantages for developing biosensors for viral infections with high sensitivity and selectivity. Fast, accurate, and reliable detection, even at early infection stages by the virus, can be potentially enabled by highly accessible surface interactions between the 2DMs and the analytes. High selectivity can be obtained by functionalization of the 2DMs with antibodies, nucleic acids, proteins, peptides, or aptamers, allowing for specific binding to a particular virus, viral fingerprints, or proteins released by the host organism. Multiplexed detection and discrimination between different virus strains are also feasible. In this Review, we present a comprehensive overview of the major advances of 2DM-based biosensors for the detection of viruses. We describe the main factors governing the efficient interactions between viruses and 2DMs, making them ideal candidates for the detection of viral infections. We also critically detail their advantages and drawbacks, providing insights for the development of future biosensors for virus detection. Lastly, we provide suggestions to stimulate research in the fast expanding field of 2DMs that could help in designing advanced systems for preventing virus-related pandemics.

Review on heterogeneous photocatalytic disinfection of waterborne, airborne, and foodborne viruses: Can we win against pathogenic viruses?

Microbial pathogenic contaminations have world widely represented a serious health hazard to humans. Viruses, as a member of microbial contaminants, seriously threaten human health due to their high environmental resistance, having small sizes, and causing an extensive range of diseases. Therefore, selecting an appropriate technology to remove viral contaminants from the air, water, and foods is of prominent significance. Traditional methods for viral disinfection have not proven to be highly practical and effective because they need high energy resources and operational expenses. In recent years, semiconductor-based photocatalysis has attracted more attention in the field of microorganism inactivation due to its outstanding performance and mild reaction conditions. Therefore, this review primarily concentrates on the recent development in viral inactivation/disinfection by heterogeneous photocatalysts. Moreover, the photocatalytic viral inactivation of waterborne, airborne, and foodborne viruses is discussed. Given the appealing merits of heterogeneous photocatalytic disinfection of viruses, there is no doubt that this technology will be an impressively active research field and a source of comfort and confidence to humans in battling against viruses.

Thermal-Sprayed Photocatalytic Coatings for Biocidal Applications: A Review

There have been ever-growing demands for disinfection of water and air in recent years. Efficient, eco-friendly, and cost-effective methods of disinfection for pathogens are vital to the health of human beings. The photocatalysis route has attracted worldwide attention due to its highly efficient oxidative capabilities and sustainable recycling, which can be used to realize the disinfection purposes without secondary pollution. Though many studies have comprehensively reviewed the work about photocatalytic disinfection, including design and fabrication of photocatalytic coatings, inactivation mechanisms, or practical applications, systematic reviews about the disinfection photocatalysis coatings from fabrication to effort for practical use are still rare. Among different ways of fabricating photocatalytic materials, thermal spray is a versatile surface coating technique and competitive in constructing large-scale functional coatings, which is a most promising way for the future environmental purification, biomedical and life health applications. In this review, we briefly introduced various photocatalytic materials and corresponding inactivation mechanisms for virus, bacteria and fungus. We summarized the thermal-sprayed photocatalysts and their antimicrobial performances. Finally, we discussed the future perspectives of the photocatalytic disinfection coatings for potential applications. This review would shed light on the development and implementation of sustainable disinfection strategies that is applicable for extensive use for controlling pathogens in the near future.

Floating Photocatalysts for Effluent Refinement Based on Stable Pickering Cellulose Foams and Graphitic Carbon Nitride (g-C3N4)

The transfer of heterogeneous photocatalysis applications from the laboratory to real-life aqueous systems is challenging due to the higher density of photocatalysts compared to water, light attenuation effects in water, complicated recovery protocols, and metal pollution from metal-based photocatalysts. In this work, we overcome these obstacles by developing a buoyant Pickering photocatalyst carrier based on green cellulose nanofibers (CNFs) derived from wood. The air bubbles in the carrier were stable because the particle surfactants provided thermodynamic stability and the derived photocatalytic foams floated on water throughout the test period (4 weeks). A metal-free semiconductor photocatalyst, g-C3N4, was facilely embedded inside the foam by mixing the photocatalyst with the air-bubble suspension followed by casting and drying to produce solid foams. When tested under mild irradiation conditions (visible light, low energy LEDs) and no agitation, almost three times more dye was removed after 6 h for the floating g-C3N4-CNF nanocomposite foam, compared to the pure g-C3N4 powder residing on the bottom of a ca. 2 cm-high water pillar. The buoyancy and physicochemical properties of the carrier material were imperative to render escalated oxygenation, high photon utilization, and faster dye degradation. The reported assembly protocol is facile, general, and provides a new strategy for assembling green floating foams that can potentially carry a number of different photocatalysts.

Graphitic nitride-catalyzed advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) for landfill leachate treatment: A mini review

Landfill leachate poses significant risks to public health via the release of high-toxicity contaminants, including refractory organic compounds, ammonia-nitrogen compounds, and heavy metals. Significant efforts have been made to develop useful methods for leachate disposition and treatment. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are one of the most promising methods, because they can rapidly degrade diverse pollutants and significantly improve the biodegradability of leachate. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), a fascinating conjugated polymer, has become a hot topic in AOP research due to its metal-free benefits and high photosensitivity. Thus, combining AOPs with g-C₃N₄ achieves excellent degradation of refractory pollutants in leachate. Since the composition of leachate is complex in the practical conditions, the information reported by current studies of using g-C₃N₄ as a remediator is still incomplete and fragmented. Thus, in this review, the recent status of leachate treatment and approaches for its disposal has been summarized and some conclusions have been drawn. In addition, a brief introduction to g-C₃N₄ and its application in AOPs for leachate treatment have been critically discussed and with its future outlook assessed. Although the development of g-C₃N₄ in AOPs for leachate treatment is highly efficient and practical, comprehensive study about its application and technology expansion is urgently needed, based on the complex operating conditions. Perspectives on the treatment of leachate using g-C₃N₄-AOPs are also included. The information and perspectives provided in this review will provide guidance and novel understanding to accelerate the development of g-C₃N₄-based AOPs for leachate treatment.

Metal-free 2D/2D heterojunction of covalent triazine-based frameworks/graphitic carbon nitride with enhanced interfacial charge separation for highly efficient photocatalytic elimination of antibiotic pollutants

A novel polymer-based 2D/2D heterojunction photocatalysts of covalent triazine-based frameworks/graphitic carbon nitride nanosheets (CTFNS/CNNS) heterojunction are successfully obtained by an electrostatic self-assembly method using amine-functionalized CNNS and carboxyl-rich CTFNS. Such large contact surface and appropriate interfacial contact between CNNS and CTFNS plays a critical role in transfer and separation of charge-carriers. The resulting CTFNS/CNNS heterojunction showed significantly enhanced photocatalytic activity under the irradiation of simulated solar light, which could decompose 10 ppm sulfamethazine (SMT) within 180 min with a high degradation efficiency of 95.8 %. Chloride ions can greatly promote the photocatalytic degradation of SMT due to the production of more radical species. O₂^- is the dominant active species for SMT decomposition over CTFNS/CNNS heterojunction. Moreover, the degradation intermediates of SMT were identified using high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometer and the degradation pathway was proposed. This study provides a new insight into the design of 2D/2D heterojunctions using carbon-based nanomaterials, which exhibits great potential in the degradation of sulfonamide antibiotics in wastewaters.

Efficient day-night photocatalysis performance of 2D/2D Ti3C2/Porous g-C3N4 nanolayers composite and its application in the degradation of organic pollutants

It is hindered by the limited light time that the development of photocatalysis technology, which is a clean and energy-saving advanced oxidation process. In this work, a 2D/2D Ti₃C₂/porous g-C₃N₄ nanolayers composited van der Waals (VDW) heterostructure photocatalyst (Ti₃C₂/PCN) was prepared by a straightforward vacuum filtration method after an ultrasonic stripping process. In this Ti₃C₂/PCN composite photocatalyst, PCN nanolayers play the role of absorbing visible light, while Ti₃C₂ nanolayers form VDW heterojunction with PCN nanolayers, which is beneficial to migration of photo-generated electrons from PCN to Ti₃C₂. The band structure match of Ti₃C₂/PCN and the build-in electric field from the VDW heterojunction both favor the effective separation and migration of photo-induced charge carriers that is why the Ti₃C₂/PCN composite shows good day-photocatalytic capability with 98% phenol removal efficiency. Besides, as a good electronic storage material, the Ti₃C₂ can store excess photo-generated electrons under light irradiation and release them when exposed to electron acceptors in the dark condition. Therefore, the night-photocatalysis can work out even without sunlight, in which 32% phenol was decomposed. In addition, the universality of Ti₃C₂/PCN day-night photocatalytic system is proved by the degradation of various organic pollutants. The design of this day-night photocatalyst can facilitate the application of photocatalytic reaction to actual environmental scenes, since it reduces the limitation imposed by the presence or absence of sunlight.

Current Trends in the Application of Nanomaterials for the Removal of Emerging Micropollutants and Pathogens from Water

Water resources contamination has a worldwide impact and is a cause of global concern. The need for provision of clean water is becoming more and more demanding. Nanotechnology may support effective strategies for the treatment, use and reuse of water and the development of next-generation water supply systems. The excellent properties and effectiveness of nanomaterials make them particularly suitable for water/wastewater treatment. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the main categories of nanomaterials used in catalytic processes (carbon nanotubes/graphitic carbon nitride (CNT/g-C₃N₄) composites/graphene-based composites, metal oxides and composites, metal–organic framework and commercially available nanomaterials). These materials have found application in the removal of different categories of pollutants, including pharmaceutically active compounds, personal care products, organic micropollutants, as well as for the disinfection of bacterial, viral and protozoa microbial targets, in water and wastewater matrices. Apart from reviewing the characteristics and efficacy of the aforementioned nanoengineered materials for the removal of different pollutants, we have also recorded performance limitations issues (e.g., toxicity, operating conditions and reuse) for their practical application in water and wastewater treatment on large scale. Research efforts and continuous production are expected to support the development of eco-friendly, economic and efficient nanomaterials for real life applications in the near future.

Enhanced inactivation of antibiotic-resistant bacteria isolated from secondary effluents by g-C3N4 photocatalysis

The extensive use of antibiotics has resulted in the development of antibiotic-resistant bacteria (ARB), which may not be completely removed by traditional wastewater treatment processes. More effective approaches to disinfection are needed to prevent the release of ARB into the surface water. The metal-free photocatalyst graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄) has aroused great interest as a possible agent for water and wastewater treatment, due to its low cytotoxicity and photoactivity with visible light. In this study, the efficacy of g-C₃N₄ was assessed as a possible means to enhance ARB inactivation by irradiation. ARB were isolated and purified from secondary effluents in 4 municipal wastewater treatment plants. Of these, 4 typical multi-drug ARB isolates, belonging to Enterobacteriaceae, were selected for irradiation experiments. Inactivation was seen to increase with irradiation time. At 60 min, the inactivation of the 4 ARB isolates by light at > 300 nm and > 400 nm was in the range of 0.25-0.39 log and 0.16-0.19 log, respectively. The use of g-C₃N₄-mediated photocatalysis at the same wavelengths significantly enhanced that to 0.64-1.26 log and 0.31-0.41 log, respectively. The antibiotic susceptibility of the ARB isolates remained unchanged either prior to or after irradiation and was independent of photon fluence, reaction time, and the presence of g-C₃N₄. This study establishes a baseline for understanding the effectiveness of g-C₃N₄ photocatalysis on inactivation of ARB in wastewaters and lays the foundation for further improvement in the use of photocatalysis for wastewater treatment.

Cobalt oxide loaded graphitic carbon nitride as adsorptive photocatalyst for tetracycline removal from aqueous solution

The treatment of antibiotic-containing wastewater is of great importance due to the potential threats of antibiotics to human and the ecosystem. We reported the preparation of cobalt oxide loaded graphitic carbon nitride (CoO/g-C₃N₄) by an impregnation-calcination method for tetracycline (TC) removal from aqueous solution. The developed CoO/g-C₃N₄ exhibited high adsorption capacity and fast adsorption kinetic for TC due to the complexation of TC with surface loaded CoO. In particular, 7%CoO/gC₃N₄3 sample presented a maximum TC adsorption capacity of 391.4 mg g^-1. It was found that Langmuir and pseudo-second order kinetic models fitted TC adsorption process well. Further photocatalytic studies showed that CoO loaded g-C₃N₄ was active for TC photodegradation, although the photocatalytic reaction rate constant was lower than that of native g-C₃N₄. CoO nanoparticles loading on g-C₃N₄ played the major role of adsorption sites rather than cocatalyst for photocatalysis. We believe that the developed CoO/g-C₃N₄ could be a potential adsorptive photocatalyst for antibiotic pollutants removal from wastewater.

Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4)-based photocatalysts for water disinfection and microbial control: A review

Microbial contamination in drinking water is of great concern around the world because of high pathogenic risks to humans. Semiconductor photocatalysis has aroused an increasing interest as a promising environmental remediation technology for water disinfection and microbial control. Among various photocatalysts, graphitic carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄), as a fascinating two-dimensional conjugated polymer consisting of low-cost, earth-abundant elements, has drawn broad attention as a robust, metal-free, and visible-light-active material in the fields of both environmental remediation and solar energy conversion. Photocatalytic applications of g-C₃N₄-based nanomaterials for water splitting, hydrogen production, carbon dioxide reduction, and pollutant degradation have been extensively investigated and systematically reviewed. In contrast, their antimicrobial properties have been explored more recently due to the complex structure and unique metabolism of living microorganisms compared with chemicals. The corresponding rapidly increasing research efforts in the last five years have inspired us to conduct the review. This review is the first to comprehensively summarize the progress in design and antimicrobial performance of g-C₃N₄-based photocatalysts for water disinfection and microbial control, involving not only bacteria but also viruses and microalgae. Moreover, the underlying inactivation mechanisms of photocatalysts for microorganisms are evaluated to provide further understanding of g-C₃N₄-based advanced disinfection processes. In addition, some exciting future opportunities and challenges at the forefront of this research platform are pointed out. It is expected that this review can pave a new avenue for the development of a facile, cost-effective, environmental-friendly, and sustainable disinfection alternative.
