Nanopriming boost seed vigor: Deeper insights into the effect mechanism

Nanopriming, an advanced seed priming technology, is highly praised for its environmental friendliness, safety, and effectiveness in promoting sustainable agriculture. Studies have shown that nanopriming can enhance seed germination by stimulating the expression of aquaporins and increasing amylase production. By applying an appropriate concentration of nanoparticles, seeds can generate reactive oxygen species (ROS), enhance their antioxidant capacity, improve their response to oxidative stress, and enhance their tolerance to both biotic and abiotic stresses. This positive impact extends beyond the seed germination and seedling growth stages, persisting throughout the entire life cycle. This review offers a comprehensive overview of recent research progress in seed priming using various nanoparticles, while also addressing current challenges and future opportunities for sustainable agriculture.

Nano-enabled strategies to promote safe crop production in heavy metal(loid)-contaminated soil

Nanobiotechnology is a potentially safe and sustainable strategy for both agricultural production and soil remediation, yet the potential of nanomaterials (NMs) application to remediate heavy metal(loid)-contaminated soils is still unclear. A meta-analysis with approximately 6000 observations was conducted to quantify the effects of NMs on safe crop production in soils contaminated with heavy metal(loid) (HM), and a machine learning approach was used to identify the major contributing features. Applying NMs can elevate the crop shoot (18.2 %, 15.4-21.2 %) and grain biomass (30.7 %, 26.9-34.9 %), and decrease the shoot and grain HM concentration by 31.8 % (28.9-34.5 %) and 46.8 % (43.7-49.8 %), respectively. Iron-NMs showed a greater potential to inhibit crop HM uptake compared to other types of NMs. Our result further demonstrates that NMs application substantially reduces the potential health risk of HM in crop grains by human health risk assessment. The NMs-induced reduction in HM accumulation was associated with decreasing HM bioavailability, as well as increased soil pH and organic matter. A random forest model demonstrates that soil pH and total HM concentration are the two significant features affecting shoot HM accumulation. This analysis of the literature highlights the significant potential of NMs application in promoting safe agricultural production in HM-contaminated agricultural lands.

Carbon nanotubes in plant dynamics: Unravelling multifaceted roles and phytotoxic implications

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have emerged as a promising frontier in plant science owing to their unique physicochemical properties and versatile applications. CNTs enhance stress tolerance by improving water dynamics and nutrient uptake and activating defence mechanisms against abiotic and biotic stresses. They can be taken up by roots and translocated within the plant, impacting water retention, nutrient assimilation, and photosynthesis. CNTs have shown promise in modulating plant-microbe interactions, influencing symbiotic relationships and mitigating the detrimental effects of phytopathogens. CNTs have demonstrated the ability to modulate gene expression in plants, offering a powerful tool for targeted genetic modifications. The integration of CNTs as sensing elements in plants has opened new avenues for real-time monitoring of environmental conditions and early detection of stress-induced changes. In the realm of agrochemicals, CNTs have been explored for their potential as carriers for targeted delivery of nutrients, pesticides, and other bioactive compounds. CNTs have the potential to demonstrate phytotoxic effects, detrimentally influencing both the growth and developmental processes of plants. Phytotoxicity is characterized by induction of oxidative stress, impairment of cellular integrity, disruption of photosynthetic processes, perturbation of nutrient homeostasis, and alterations in gene expression. This review aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the current state of knowledge regarding the multifaceted roles of CNTs in plant physiology, emphasizing their potential applications and addressing the existing challenges in translating this knowledge into sustainable agricultural practices.

Next generation chemical priming: with a little help from our nanocarrier friends

Plants are exposed to multiple threats linked to climate change which can cause critical yield losses. Therefore, designing novel crop management tools is crucial. Chemical priming has recently emerged as an effective technology for improving tolerance to stress factors. Several compounds such as phytohormones, reactive species, and synthetic chimeras have been identified as promising priming agents. Following remarkable developments in nanotechnology, several unique nanocarriers (NCs) have been engineered that can act as smart delivery systems. These provide an eco-friendly, next-generation method for chemical priming, leading to increased efficiency and reduced overall chemical usage. We review novel engineered NCs (NENCs) as vehicles for chemical agents in advanced priming strategies, and address challenges and opportunities to be met towards achieving sustainable agriculture.

Nanovehicles for melatonin: a new journey for agriculture

The important role of melatonin in plant growth and metabolism together with recent advances in the potential use of nanomaterials have opened up interesting applications in agriculture. Various nanovehicles have been explored as melatonin carriers in animals, and it is now important to explore their application in plants. Recent findings have substantiated the use of silicon and chitosan nanoparticles (NPs) in targeting melatonin to plant tissues. Although melatonin is an amphipathic molecule, nanocarriers can accelerate its uptake and transport to various plant organs, thereby relieving stress and improving plant shelf-life in the post-harvest stages. We review the scope and biosafety concerns of various nanomaterials to devise novel methods for melatonin application in crops and post-harvest products.

Toxicological effects resulting from co-exposure to nanomaterials and to a β-blocker pharmaceutical drug in the non-target macrophyte species Lemna minor

The wide use of carbon-based materials for various purposes leads to their discharge in the aquatic systems, and simultaneous occurrence with other environmental contaminants, such as pharmaceutical drugs. This co-occurrence can adversely affect exposed aquatic organisms. Up to now, few studies have considered the simultaneous toxicity of nanomaterials, and organic contaminants, including pharmaceutical drugs, towards aquatic plants. Thus, this study aimed to assess the toxic effects of the co-exposure of propranolol (PRO), and nanomaterials based on cellulose nanocrystal, and graphene oxide in the aquatic macrophyte Lemna minor. The observed effects included reduction of growth rate in 13% in co-exposure 1 (nanomaterials + PRO 5 μg L^-1), and 52-64% in co-exposure 2 (nanomaterials + PRO 51.3 mg L^-1), fresh weight reduction of 94-97% in co-exposure 2 compared to control group, and increased pigment production caused by co-exposure treatments. The analysis of PCA showed that co-exposure 1 (nanomaterials + PRO 5 μg L^-1) positively affected growth, and fresh weight, and co-exposure 2 positively affected pigments content. The results suggested that the presence of nanomaterials enhanced the overall toxicity of PRO, exerting deleterious effects in the freshwater plant L. minor, suggesting that this higher toxicity resulting from co-exposure was a consequence of the interaction between nanomaterials and PRO.

Activation of persulfate by vanadium oxide modified carbon nanotube for 17β-estradiol degradation in soil: Mechanism, application and ecotoxicity assessment

Steroid hormones in the environment have attracted public attention because of their high endocrine-disrupting activity even at rather low exposure level. Excessive hormones in the soil from the pollutant discharge of intensive farming would pose a potential threat to the ecology and the human health. Vanadium oxide modified carbon nanotube (VO_X-CNT) was synthesized and applied as persulfate (PDS) activator to reduce17β-estrogen (17β-E2) in soil. 86.06 % 17β-E2 could be degraded within 12 h. Process of materials exchange during oxidation was interfered by soil, resulting in insufficient degradation of 17β-E2, but the active species involved in 17β-E2 degradation would also be enriched by it. 17β-E2 was adsorbed on the VO_X-CNT surface and directly degraded mainly by the active species generated on the catalyst surface, and ^•OH dominated the degradation of 17β-E2 in VO_X-CNT/PDS system. CO, defective sites and vanadium oxides on the surface of VO_X-CNT contributed to the generation of activate species. Oxidizer dosage, catalyst dosage, water-soil ratio and soil properties would affect the degradation of 17β-E2. The ecotoxicological impact on soil caused by VO_X-CNT/PDS was acceptable, and would be weakened with time. Additionally, a rapid decrease in the concentration of 17β-E2 and the promotion of maize growth were observed with VO_X-CNT/PDS in situ pilot-scale remediation. Those results reveal that VO_X-CNT/PDS is a potential technology to remove excessive steroid hormone from soil around large-scale livestock and poultry farms.

Multi-walled carbon nanotubes wrapped with polyvinylpyrrolidone can control the leaf yellowing of Alstroemeria cut flowers

The rapid yellowing of the leaves on cut flowers with leafy stems severely limits their vase life and commercial value. In this study, the effect of a composite of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) on the longevity of cut Alstroemeria flowers (Alstroemeria hybrida) was investigated to obtain a solution to this problem. A range of MWCNTs/PVP composite concentrations (0, 3, 6, and 9 mg L-1) was applied in a vase solution (for 24 h) as pulse treatments. Our findings indicate that the composite of MWCNTs and PVP exhibits excellent dispersibility in a vase solution. The results demonstrate that a 3 mg L-1 MWCNTs/PVP concentration was the most effective, extending the vase life of cut Alstroemeria flowers by up to 27 days. Pulsing with MWCNTs/PVP delayed the onset of floret abscission and leaf yellowing by 5 and 18 days, respectively. Additionally, when MWCNTs/PVP solution was applied to cut stems, water uptake remained consistently greater than that of the control. Additionally, MWCNTs/PVP increased the total chlorophyll content, soluble protein content, and POX enzyme activity of leaves while decreasing the malondialdehyde (MDA) content. The results indicate that this composite exhibited antimicrobial activity against gram-positive and -negative bacteria, particularly at a concentration of 3 mg L-1. This study demonstrated that adding MWCNTs/PVP to a vase solution of Alstroemeria cut flowers increased their longevity with minimal leaf yellowing symptoms compared to untreated cut stems. As a result, this nanocomposite can be used safely and effectively in vase solutions and in combination with other preservatives.

Synthesis and characterization of single-walled carbon nanotube: Cyto-genotoxicity in Allium cepa root tips and molecular docking studies

Herein, single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) were synthesized by the thermal chemical vapor deposition (CVD) method, and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), Raman spectroscopy, dynamic light scattering (DLS), and thermo-gravimetric analysis (TGA). The results indicated that obtained nanotubes were SWCNTs with high crystallinity and their average diameter was 10.15 ± 3 nm. Allium cepa ana-telophase and comet assays on the root meristem were employed to evaluate the cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of SWCNTs by examining mitotic phases, mitotic index (MI), chromosomal aberrations (CAs), and DNA damage. A. cepa root tip cells were exposed to SWCNTs at concentrations of 12.5, 25, 50, and 100 μg/ml for 4 h. Distilled water and methyl methanesulfonate (MMS, 10 μg/ml) were used as the negative and positive control groups, respectively. It was observed that MIs decreased statistically significantly for all applied doses. Besides, CAs such as chromosome laggards, disturbed anaphase-telophase, stickiness and bridges and also DNA damage increased in the presence of SWCNTs in a concentration-dependent manner. In the molecular docking study, the SWCNT were found to be a strong DNA major groove binder showing an energetically very favorable binding free energy of -21.27 kcal/mol. Furthermore, the SWCNT interacted effectively with the nucleotides on both strands of DNA primarily via hydrophobic π and electrostatic interactions. As a result, cytotoxic and genotoxic effects of SWCNTs in A. cepa root meristematic cells which is a reliable system for assessment of nanoparticle toxicology were demonstrated in this study.

Interactive effects of metals and carbon nanotubes in a microcosm agrosystem

Agricultural soils are exposed to multiple contaminants through the use of agrochemicals or sewage sludge, introducing metals, nanomaterials and others. Among nanomaterials, carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are known for their large surface area and adsorption capabilities, possibly modifying other element behavior. However, to date, very little is known about the impacts of such interactions in agrosystems. In this study, we aimed at understanding the transfer and toxicity of contaminants (Cd, Pb, Zn and CNTs) in microcosms including native soil bacteria, earthworms and lettuce. After a 6 week exposure, no effect of the addition of CNTs to metal contaminated soils was detected on bacterial concentration or earthworm growth. However, in lettuce, an interactive effect between CNTs and metals was highlighted: in the soil containing the highest metal concentrations the addition of 0.1 mg kg^-1 CNTs led to a biomass loss (-22%) and a flavonoid concentration increase (+27%). In parallel, the addition of CNTs led to differential impacts on elemental uptake in lettuce leaves possibly related to the soil organic matter content. For earthworms, the addition of 10 mg kg^-1 CNTs resulted in an increased body elemental transfer in the soil with the higher organic matter content (Pb: + 34% and Zn: + 25%).

The combined toxicity and mechanism of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and nano copper oxide toward freshwater algae: Tetradesmus obliquus

Nanoparticles (NPs) are widely used for their special physical properties and released into the natural environment. When two types of NPs exist in the same environment, the presence of one type of NP may affect the properties of the other type of NP. This study investigated the toxic effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and copper oxide nanoparticles (CuO NPs) on Tetradesmus obliquus. Both NPs had toxic effects on algae, and the toxic effects of MWCNTs were significantly stronger than CuO NPs which the 96-hr median effective concentration to algae were 33.8 and 169.2 mg/L, respectively. Oxidative stress and cell membrane damage were the main reasons for the toxicity of NPs to algae, and they were concentration-dependent, and the existence of CuO NPs in some groups reduced cell membrane damage caused by MWCNTs which may because that CuO NPs formed heteroaggregation with MWCNTs, reducing the contact of nanoparticles with cell membranes, then reducing physical damage. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM) results indicated cell damage, the heteroaggregation of MWCNTs-CuO NPs and obvious nanoparticles internalization. In some groups, the presence of CuO NPs significantly reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) level induced by MWCNTs. However, for the highest concentration group, the ROS level was much higher than that of the two NPs alone treatment groups, which might be related to the high concentration of MWCNTs promoting the internalization of CuO NPs. MWCNTs and CuO NPs affected and interacted with each other, causing more complex toxic effects on aquatic organisms.

The combined toxicity and mechanism of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and nano zinc oxide toward the cabbage

The natural environment is a complex system, and there is never only one kind of nanomaterial entering the environment. However, many studies only considered the plant toxicity of one kind of nanomaterial and do not consider the influence of two or more kinds of nanomaterials on plant toxicity. Multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and zinc oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) are two common and widely used nanomaterials in water environment, so these two kinds of nanomaterials were chosen to explore the effects of their combined toxicity on cabbage. This study investigated the toxicity of MWCNTs combined with ZnO NPs on cabbage by measuring the length of roots and stems, chlorophyll content, oxidative stress, antioxidant enzyme activity, metal element content, and root scanning electron microscopy. The toxicity of single MWCNTs toward cabbage was attributed to direct oxidative damage, while the toxicity of single ZnO NPs toward cabbage was due to the high level of zinc concentration. Moreover, ZnO NPs (10 mg/L) ameliorated MWCNTs toxicity toward cabbage by improving the activity of antioxidant enzymes. ZnO NPs (50 and 100 mg/L) because of the high content of zinc disrupted the balance of other metals in the plant and increased the toxicity of MWCNTs. In conclusion, the combined toxicity of different concentrations and types of nanomaterials should be considered for a more accurate assessment of environmental risks.

Recent advances in responses of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi - Plant symbiosis to engineered nanoparticles

The application of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs) is increasing in all walks of life, inevitably resulting in a high risk of ENMs entering the natural environment. Recent studies have demonstrated that phytoaccumulation of ENMs in the environment may be detrimental to plants to varying degrees. However, plants primarily assimilate ENMs through the roots, which are inevitably affected by rhizomicroorganisms. In this review, we focus on a group of common rhizomicroorganisms-arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF). These fungi contribute to ENMs immobilization and inhibition of phytoaccumulation, improvement of host plant growth and activation of systematic protection in response to excess ENMs stress. In present review, we summarize the biological responses of plants to ENMs and the modulatory mechanisms of AMF on the immobilization of ENMs in substrate-plant interfaces, and indirectly regulatory mechanisms of AMF on the deleterious effects of ENMs on host plants. In addition, the information of feedback of ENMs on mycorrhizal symbiosis and the prospects of future research on the fate and mechanism of phyto-toxicity of ENMs mediated by AMF in the environment are also addressed. In view of above, synergistic reaction of plants and AMF may prove to be a cost-effective and eco-friendly technology to bio-control potential ENMs contamination on a sustainable basis.

Phytonanotechnology applications in modern agriculture

With the rapidly changing global climate, the agricultural systems are confronted with more unpredictable and harsh environmental conditions than before which lead to compromised food production. Thus, to ensure safer and sustainable crop production, the use of advanced nanotechnological approaches in plants (phytonanotechnology) is of great significance. In this review, we summarize recent advances in phytonanotechnology in agricultural systems that can assist to meet ever-growing demands of food sustainability. The application of phytonanotechnology can change traditional agricultural systems, allowing the target-specific delivery of biomolecules (such as nucleotides and proteins) and cater the organized release of agrochemicals (such as pesticides and fertilizers). An amended comprehension of the communications between crops and nanoparticles (NPs) can improve the production of crops by enhancing tolerance towards environmental stresses and optimizing the utilization of nutrients. Besides, approaches like nanoliposomes, nanoemulsions, edible coatings, and other kinds of NPs offer numerous selections in the postharvest preservation of crops for minimizing food spoilage and thus establishing phtonanotechnology as a sustainable tool to architect modern agricultural practices.

Can the multi-walled carbon nanotubes be used to alleviate the phytotoxicity of herbicides in soils?

Herbicides are commonly used globally. However, residual herbicides in soils for ages often result in phytotoxicity and serious yield loss to subsequent crops. In this paper, the multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) were utilized to amend the herbicide polluted soil, and the adsorption performance of herbicides to MWCNTs amended soil was studied. Results indicate efficient alleviation of herbicide-induced phytotoxicity to rice and tobacco due to MWCNTs amendment. When 0.4% MWCNTs were applied, the concentration of sulfentrazone that inhibited the same rice height by 50% (IC₅₀) increased to more than 3 times that of pure soil. When the MWCNTs were used to alleviate the phytotoxicity of quinclorac to tobacco, the MWCNTs not only alleviated the phytotoxicity of quinclorac but also promoted the growth of tobacco. The MWCNTs amended soil significantly increased the adsorption of herbicide to soil than biochar. The soil microbial analysis shows that MWCNTs had no significant effect on soil microbial community diversity, but the long-term exposure to MWCNTs could change the structure of the soil microbial community. Above all, our results highlighted the potential implication of the MWCNTs to ensure crop production by promoting crop growth and reducing the residual bioavailability of herbicides.

Activated-carbon-filled agarose hydrogel as a natural medium for seed germination and seedling growth

An activated-carbon-filled agarose (Agar-AC) hydrogel containing various concentrations of activated carbon (AC) was successfully fabricated through a simple solvent cast technique. Compared to pure agarose hydrogels, Agar-AC hydrogels exhibited excellent mechanical properties, good thermal stability and a highly developed pore structure. The Agar-AC hydrogels also showed a certain degree of improvement in water retention performance, while their swelling ratio decreased with the addition of AC. The incorporation of AC did not influence the crystallinity of the agarose hydrogel, and no chemical modification occurred according to XRD and FTIR. In rapeseed seed germination experiments, the growth indexes of rapeseed, including the germination percentage, root length, stem length, fresh weight and dry weight, were enhanced by the incorporation of a suitable amount of AC. These results indicated that AC has great potential to enhance the properties of agarose hydrogels and improve seed germination and plant growth, which implies that Agar-AC hydrogels can be used as natural materials for agricultural applications.

Dual Effect of Nanomaterials on Germination and Seedling Growth: Stimulation vs. Phytotoxicity

Due to recent active research, a large amount of data has been accumulated regarding the effects of different nanomaterials (mainly metal oxide nanoparticles, carbon nanotubes, chitosan nanoparticles) on different plant species. Most studies have focused on seed germination and early seedling development, presumably due to the simplicity of these experimental systems. Depending mostly on size and concentration, nanomaterials can exert both positive and negative effects on germination and seedling development during normal and stress conditions, thus some research has evaluated the phytotoxic effects of nanomaterials and the physiological and molecular processes behind them, while other works have highlighted the favorable seed priming effects. This review aims to systematize and discuss research data regarding the effect of nanomaterials on germination and seedling growth in order to provide state-of-the-art knowledge about this fast developing research area.

Interactions of cadmium and zinc in high zinc tolerant native species Andropogon gayanus cultivated in hydroponics: growth endpoints, metal bioaccumulation, and ultrastructural analysis

Cadmium (Cd) and zinc (Zn) toxicity causes physiological disorders and harms plants, interfering with the rehabilitation of areas affected by mining activities. This study evaluated how the exposure to Zn and/or Cd affects the growth of native andropogon grass (Andropogon gayanus Kunth) plants originally found in areas contaminated with Cd and/or Zn due to zinc mining activities. Plants were cultivated for 7 weeks in a nutrient solution treated with Zn (142.3-854.0 μM) or Cd (0.9-13.3 μM) separately or combined with a molar ratio of 64:1 (Zn:Cd). A control treatment was grown in a complete Hoagland and Arnon solution (without Cd). Plant height, stem diameter, internode length, dry weight, Cd and Zn concentration, and accumulation in shoots/roots, as well as ultrastructure of roots and leaves were analyzed at the end of the experiment. The root dry weight was not significantly affected by the addition of the metals. Moreover, Zn provided higher shoot dry weight (up to 160%) relative to control. Andropogon grass tolerated both metals better separately than when applied together. Transmission electron microscopy analyses showed modifications such as vesiculation and vacuolation in the ultrastructure of andropogon tissues by Cd and/or Zn. The andropogon grass was tolerant to the doses tested, evidencing that it has potential for recovering areas contaminated with Zn and/or Cd.

Reduced phytotoxicity of nonylphenol on tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) plants by earthworm casts

Concentrations as high as thousands of milligrams per kilogram (dry weight) of nonylphenol (NP), an endocrine-disrupting chemical of great concern, have been reported in soil. Soil is considered one of the primary pathways for exposure of crop plants to NP. However, there have been few studies on the toxicity of soil NP to crop plants, especially with comprehensive consideration of the application of organic fertiliser which is a common agricultural practice. In this study, tomato plants were grown in soils treated with NP in the presence and/or absence of earthworm casts (EWCs). After four weeks, we tested the physiological and biochemical responses (accumulative levels of hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) and superoxide anion radicals (O₂-·), total chlorophyll content, degree of membrane lipid peroxidation, activities of defence-related enzymes, and level of DNA damage) and the changes in plant growth (elongation and biomass). The growth inhibition, reactive oxygen species (H₂O₂ and O₂-·) accumulation, decrease in chlorophyll content, increase in activity of defence-related enzymes (including superoxide dismutase, peroxidase, catalase, ascorbate peroxidase, glutathione S-transferase and glutathione reductase), enhancement of membrane lipid peroxidation, and DNA damage in NP-treated seedlings were clearly reversed by the intervention of EWCs. In particular, the suppressed elongation, biomass, and chlorophyll content in tomato plants exposed to NP alone were significantly restored by EWCs to even greater levels than those of the undisturbed control. In other words, EWCs could efficiently invigorate the photosynthesis of crops via up-regulating the chlorophyll content, thereby overwhelming the NP stress on plant growth. Accordingly, except for reducing the bioavailability of soil NP as reported in our previous study, EWCs could also help crop plants to cope with NP stress by strengthening their stress resistance ability. Our findings are of practical significance for the formulation of strategies to relieve the negative effects of soil NP on crop growth.

Antagonistic effects of multi-walled carbon nanotubes and BDE-47 in zebrafish (Danio rerio): Oxidative stress, apoptosis and DNA damage

In natural environments, organisms are often exposed to several environmental pollutants at any one time, and the potential effects of such co-exposures on human and environmental health are of considerable concern. It is thought that multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) may interact with other pollutants in aquatic systems and induce considerably different effects compared with exposure to a single contaminant. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential acute combined effects of mixtures of MWCNTs and 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE-47) on embryonic development stages, oxidative stress, apoptosis and DNA damage in developing zebrafish (Danio rerio). The embryos were treated with BDE-47 (5, 10, and 50 μg/L) and MWCNTs (50 mg/L), either combined or individually, for 96 h. Following exposure, BDE-47 induced significant acute toxicity, while the MWCNTs exhibited slight toxicity. When compared with BDE-47-only exposure, the inhibited growth induced by BDE-47 was weakened in the presence of MWCNTs. Similarly, the levels of oxidative stress biomarkers (reactive oxygen species, superoxide dismutase, catalase activities and malondialdehyde), apoptosis (apoptosis rate, caspase-3 and caspase-9 activities) and DNA damage (comet assay and comet olive tails) decreased in the presence of MWCNTs compared to those exposed to BDE-47 alone. These results demonstrate that MWCNTs can weaken the developmental inhibition, oxidative stress, apoptosis and DNA damage induced by BDE-47 in the early stages of zebrafish development.

Carbon Nanotubes-Based Nanomaterials and Their Agricultural and Biotechnological Applications

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered a promising nanomaterial for diverse applications owing to their attractive physicochemical properties such as high surface area, superior mechanical and thermal strength, electrochemical activity, and so on. Different techniques like arc discharge, laser vaporization, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and vapor phase growth are explored for the synthesis of CNTs. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized CNTs are profoundly affected by the techniques used in the synthesis process. Here, we briefly described the standard methods applied in the synthesis of CNTs and their use in the agricultural and biotechnological fields. Notably, better seed germination or plant growth was noted in the presence of CNTs than the control. However, the exact mechanism of action is still unclear. Significant improvements in the electrochemical performances have been observed in CNTs-doped electrodes than those of pure. CNTs or their derivatives are also utilized in wastewater treatment. The high surface area and the presence of different functional groups in the functionalized CNTs facilitate the better adsorption of toxic metal ions or other chemical moieties. CNTs or their derivatives can be applied for the storage of hydrogen as an energy source. It has been observed that the temperature widely influences the hydrogen storage ability of CNTs. This review paper highlighted some recent development on electrochemical platforms over single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs), multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs), and nanocomposites as a promising biomaterial in the field of agriculture and biotechnology. It is possible to tune the properties of carbon-based nanomaterials by functionalization of their structure to use as an engineering toolkit for different applications, including agricultural and biotechnological fields.

Carbon Nanoparticles Functionalized with Carboxylic Acid Improved the Germination and Seedling Vigor in Upland Boreal Forest Species

Nanopriming has been shown to significantly improve seed germination and seedling vigor in several agricultural crops. However, this approach has not been applied to native upland boreal forest species with complex seed dormancy to improve propagation. Herein, we demonstrate the effectiveness of carbon nanoparticles functionalized with carboxylic acids in resolving seed dormancy and improved the propagation of two native upland boreal forest species. Seed priming with carbon nanoparticles functionalized with carboxylic acids followed by stratification were observed to be the most effective in improving germination to 90% in green alder (Alnus viridis L.) compared to 60% in the control. Conversely, a combination of carbon nanoparticles (CNPs), especially multiwall carbon nanoparticles functionalized with carboxylic acid (MWCNT–COOH), cold stratification, mechanical scarification and hormonal priming (gibberellic acid) was effective for buffaloberry seeds (Shepherdia canadensis L.). Both concentrations (20 µg and 40 µg) of MWCNT–COOH had a higher percent germination (90%) compared to all other treatments. Furthermore, we observed the improvement in germination, seedling vigor and resolution of both embryo and seed coat dormancy in upland boreal forest species appears to be associated with the remodeling of C18:3 enriched fatty acids in the following seed membrane lipid molecular species: PC18:1/18:3, PG16:1/18:3, PE18:3/18:2, and digalactosyldiacylglycerol (DGDG18:3/18:3). These findings suggest that nanopriming may be a useful approach to resolve seed dormancy issues and improve the seed germination in non-resource upland boreal forest species ideally suited for forest reclamation following resource mining.
