Abstract
The rapid increase in e-cigarette use highlights the importance of developing relevant, predictive animal models exploring their potential health implications. The goal of the present study was to examine the abuse-related effects of brief, repeated e-cigarette aerosol exposures in rodents modeling human e-cigarette user behavior. We evaluated the discriminative stimulus effects of brief, repeated puffs of inhaled nicotine in rats that had been trained to discriminate injected nicotine from saline. Locomotor activity measurement following exposure to injected and aerosolized nicotine was also assessed as an additional behavioral outcome. We hypothesized that the stimulus effects of nicotine aerosol were central nervous system (CNS)-mediated and comparable to that produced by an injected nicotine training stimulus. We further hypothesized that number of aerosol puffs and the e-liquid nicotine concentration which was aerosolized would impact the substitution of nicotine aerosol for injected nicotine. Both nicotine injections and exposures to nicotine aerosol produced a dose-dependent effect on locomotor activity. Nicotine aerosol under our puffing conditions produced e-liquid nicotine concentration-dependent and puff-number-dependent complete substitution for the injected nicotine training condition. The nicotinic antagonist, mecamylamine, completely blocked nicotine-appropriate responding produce by the training dose of 0.3 mg/kg injected nicotine as well as that resulting from exposure to aerosol puffs generated by e-liquid containing 3 mg/ml nicotine, demonstrating that the stimulus of inhaled nicotine was most likely CNS-mediated and not due to olfactory stimulus properties. Overall, the results support the hypothesis that an aerosol exposure drug discrimination model in rodents has applicability to studying the abuse-related effects of e-cigarettes. SIGNIFICANCE STATEMENT: Animal models of nicotine aerosol exposure using testing conditions resembling human e-cigarette use are lacking. In this study, we test a novel preclinical model of nicotine vaping in rodents which allows for the exploration of the abuse-related effects of e-cigarettes. This model has the potential to contribute both to our understanding of the abuse-related pharmacological effects of e-cigarettes as well as aid in the development of rationale, evidence-based e-cigarette regulatory policies.

Abstract
This study examines the demographic factors associated with youths' first product tried (i.e., cigarettes, e-cigarettes, cigars, hookah, or smokeless tobacco). This study also evaluates whether the first product tried is associated with future nicotine product use (i.e., no use, single product use, and multiple product use) and nicotine dependence. Participants were 1999 youths (ages 12-17 years) who had ever tried a nicotine product and completed the Population Assessment of Tobacco Health study's Wave 1 (2013-2014) and Wave 4 (2016-2018) assessments. Two separate multinomial logistic regression models examined the association between 1) demographic factors and the first product tried at Wave 1 and 2) the first product tried at Wave 1 and past-30-day product use status at Wave 4. A two-part multivariable model examined the association between the first product tried and nicotine dependence, with part 1 modeling the presence (or absence) of any symptom of dependence and part 2 modeling the degree of dependence among those with any symptom of dependence. The first product tried was associated with sex, race, urbanicity, and parent education. First trying smokeless tobacco (vs. e-cigarettes) was associated with a greater likelihood of multiple product use (vs. no use and vs. single product use). Regarding the degree of nicotine dependence (n = 713), first trying smokeless tobacco (vs. e-cigarettes) was associated with higher nicotine dependence scores among those with any symptom of dependence. Youths who first try smokeless tobacco (vs. e-cigarettes) may be at higher risk for future multiple product use and more symptoms nicotine dependence. Research should explore tailored interventions for smokeless tobacco users.

Abstract
Oral nicotine pouches are emerging as a new "modern oral" nicotine product. These prefilled pouches contain nicotine, flavorings, and filling agents that dissolve in the mouth. Nicotine can be derived from tobacco leaf or chemical synthesis. Traces of TSNAs and toxic chromium were detected in the pouch products. This raises the concern about general and periodontal health. This review aims to update the current oral nicotine products research relating to periodontal disease and its relevance in periodontal inflammation. Nicotine interacts with host cells and affects inflammatory responses to microbial challenges. It may directly or indirectly deteriorate periodontal tissues by activating nicotinic acetylcholine receptors, repressing PDL fibroblasts cells, increasing cellular ROS and cytokines/chemokines, growth factors, breaking microbiota balance, and dysregulating miRNAs expression. Studies show that appealing flavorings contained in nicotine pouches pose harm to periodontal innate immune responses and increase penetration of nitrosamines. In addition, flavored ONPs increase the risk of dual or poly-tobacco products among young adults, stacking up detrimental effects on the periodontium. Given the recent growth of users, further studies are needed to elucidate the impact of ONPs, even poly-tobacco use, on systemic and periodontal health. Moreover, policymakers should ensure to avoid generating a new wave of nicotine addiction among youths in the U.S.

Abstract
Background Little research has been conducted on social aspects and preferences of electronic nicotine delivery system (ENDS) use among young ENDS users, and none have examined differences in these aspects and preferences by gender and tobacco use status. Methods A total of 558 young regular vapers (ages 16-24; vaped at least once a week for the last 3 months) from Nova Scotia were recruited to complete a demographic and vaping questionnaire. A 2 x 3 study design was used to compare participants on social aspects and vaping preferences based on gender (male or female) and tobacco use status (never, former, or current smoker). Chi-square tests were used to determine significant differences, and Bonferroni tests were used to assess over- and under-representation within significant variables. Results Current tobacco-using male vapers had a higher frequency of experiencing pressure to vape from friends and current employment as compared to females. Former and never tobacco-using male vapers had a higher frequency of parental awareness of their vaping behavior than females. Former tobacco-using female vapers had a higher frequency of being influenced to vape by others they know on social media than males. Both never and former tobacco-using females reported a higher frequency of exposure to vaping content on social media than males. Never tobacco-using female vapers preferred vape pen devices relative to males. Conclusions Important gender differences by tobacco use status exist and demonstrate differential patterns of social influence for ENDS use and their experiences within this demographic.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Subjective experiences (SEs) at initiation of cigarettes, cigars, and smokeless tobacco have been established as predictors of continued use. To date, less is known about the relationships between SEs at e-cigarette initiation and subsequent e-cigarette use behaviors. METHODS This study used data from Waves 1-6 of the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance (TATAMS) system; a population-based rapid response study of adolescents in major metropolitan areas of Texas. Participants were adolescents who self-reported ever using e-cigarettes across all 6 waves (n = 1,104; N = 460,069). Factor analyses examined structure of SEs at e-cigarette initiation. Weighted, multilevel, multivariate regression models examined role of SEs at e-cigarette initiation on subsequent past 30-day e-cigarette use behaviors. RESULTS Factor analyses identified a positive (i.e., euphoria, relaxation) and a negative (i.e., dizziness, cough, nausea) domain of SEs. Positive SEs at e-cigarette initiation predicted 1.20 (95% CI: 1.02-1.42) greater odds of subsequent past 30-day e-cigarette use. Similarly, positive SEs at e-cigarette initiation predicted greater relative risk of dual/poly e-cigarette use, relative to non-use (RRR: 1.61; 95% CI: 1.24-2.10) and exclusive e-cigarette use (RRR: 1.68; 95% CI: 1.26-2.24). CONCLUSION This is the first study to observe longitudinal relationships between SEs at e-cigarette initiation and subsequent e-cigarette use behaviors. Findings highlight the importance of preventing initial e-cigarette use among adolescents.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The use of electronic cigarettes (e-cigarettes) among adolescents is increasing worldwide. E-cigarettes are marketed as a safe alternative to other tobacco products. The aim of this systematic review is to evaluate whether e-cigarette use in children and adolescents is associated with coughing. METHOD Studies were identified through systematic searches of Excerpta Medica Database, Medline, Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature, British Nursing Index, OVID Emcare, Health Management Information Consortium, PsycINFO, and Allied and Complementary Medicine. The Grey Literature was also searched. Selected studies either contained only children and adolescents as study participants or if adults were included, the data for adolescents and children must be presented separately. RESULTS Seven studies were selected from 104. Three studies compared e-cigarette users with nonusers; two studies found a significant association between coughing and e-cigarette use in adolescence. Two studies investigated whether adolescents attributed their symptoms to their e-cigarette use. One study reported that coughing was the most likely negative symptom reported by adolescents on initiation of e-cigarette use; the other study found that adolescents, on initiation of e-cigarette use, reported coughing. Two studies looked at the cases of children and adolescents who had presented to the hospital after e-cigarette use and found coughing was a common presenting symptom. CONCLUSION This systematic review shows that adolescent use of e-cigarettes is associated with increased coughing and e-cigarette users are more likely to report coughing compared to non-users.

Abstract
The rise of e-cigarette popularity has sparked interest in the role of palatable flavors on nicotine use. Despite growing evidence that sweet flavorants enhance nicotine reward, their influence on nicotine consumption has not been studied extensively. In addition, the impact that flavored nicotine use in adolescence could have on nicotine reward and dependence in adulthood remains unclear. This study examined the role of flavored nicotine access on nicotine preference and consumption longitudinally, from adolescence to adulthood. Male and female adolescent mice preferred a fruit-flavored nicotine solution over an unflavored nicotine solution. However, only adolescent female mice with access to flavored nicotine consumed higher doses. Furthermore, while adolescent male mice escalated consumption of both flavored and unflavored nicotine, female mice only escalated nicotine consumption when given access to flavored nicotine. As mice matured into adulthood, there was no evidence that a history of flavored-nicotine access altered preference for unflavored nicotine compared to a nicotine-free control in a classic two-bottle choice design. However, when the nicotine concentration was progressively reduced, mice that had consumed strawberry-flavored nicotine in adolescence maintained baseline nicotine consumption levels longer than mice that initiated nicotine use without flavor in adolescence. Finally, addition of fruit-flavorants into the nicotine solution during adulthood led to nicotine preference and increased levels of nicotine consumption, regardless of previous flavored-nicotine access or of familiarity with the selected flavorant. These results indicate that flavorants increase nicotine consumption independent of life stage, possibly posing a disproportionate risk to adolescent females. Our results also point to an effect of adolescent flavored-nicotine use on nicotine dose maintenance in adulthood, which could have implications for the success of future quit attempts.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study examined differences in the topics of vaping perceptions (positive and negative aspects) and experiences (social media content) among e-cigarette users segmented by age and gender (male and female youth and young adults) and tobacco use (never, former, or current user). METHOD E-cigarette users (N = 558, 53.6% male, mean age: 18.6 years [SD = 2.2], mean use: 5.3 days/week [SD = 2.3]) residing in Nova Scotia, Canada, responded to three open-ended topic questions concerning vaping in an online survey. Responses to each topic (e.g., positive aspects) were coded and grouped into categories (e.g., flavors). Chi-square tests were used to examine whether groups differed by topic, and Bonferroni correction tests were used to determine specific group differences in each coded category. RESULTS Age and gender groups differed in their positive perceptions of a nicotine rush, tricks, and positive social aspects of vaping and in their negative perceptions of respiratory effects, nicotine effects, product malfunction and cost, and negative social aspects of vaping. Age and gender groups also differed in exposure to tricks and branding on social media. Tobacco use groups differed in their positive perceptions of flavor, nicotine rush, tricks, low cost, enhancement, and smoking cessation and in their negative perceptions of negative social aspects and exposure to tricks on social media. CONCLUSIONS There are notable similarities and differences among youth and young adult e-cigarette users by age, gender, and tobacco use. Policies and interventions should incorporate these distinctions to effectively address the increasing use of e-cigarettes among young users.

Abstract
SIGNIFICANCE Youth use of e-cigarettes is reaching 'epidemic proportions,' even as combustible tobacco use is declining. Comparison of risk factors that are uniquely associated with e-cigarette and combustible tobacco use among adolescents is warranted. METHODS Six waves of data from the Texas Adolescent Tobacco and Marketing Surveillance (TATAMS) study (n=3907; N=461,069; 2014-2017) were used in this analysis. A random intercept logistic regression model was used to compare intrapersonal, interpersonal, and environmental risk factors for use of both products based on the Social Ecological Model. RESULTS Risk factors that were significantly associated with both past 30-day use of e-cigarette and combustible tobacco products over time included past 30-day use of marijuana and alcohol, social acceptability of product use, having friends and family members who used the products, and male gender. Increasing age, worse academic performance, higher sensation seeking score, higher recall of social media promotion in the past 30 days, and lower positive affect score were associated with past 30-day use of combustible tobacco only. White race was associated with past-30 day use of e-cigarettes only. CONCLUSION Involving peers and parents in preventive interventions designed to reduce uptake of these products is paramount, as is the need to address other substance use, like alcohol and marijuana. Efforts should also be made to create a social climate that makes tobacco use (e-cigarettes and combustible products) less acceptable and desirable.

Abstract
The Tobacco Regulatory Science Program is a collaborative research effort between the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In 2013, the NIH funded 14 Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science (TCORS), which serve as partners in establishing research, training, and professional development programs to guide FDA. Each of the fourteen TCORS, and two other NIH-funded research programs, the Center for the Evaluation of Nicotine in Cigarettes (CENIC) and the Consortium on Methods Evaluating Tobacco (COMET), pursued specific research themes relevant to FDA's priorities. A key mandate for FDA is to reduce tobacco use among young people. This article is a review of the peer-reviewed research, including published and in-press manuscripts, from the TCORS, CENIC, and COMET, which provides specific data or other findings on youth (ages 10-18 years) and/or young adults (ages 18-34 years), from 2013 to 2018. Citations of all TCORS, CENIC, and COMET articles from September 2013 to December 2017 were collected by the TCORS coordinating center, the Center for Evaluation and Coordination of Training and Research. Additional citations up to April 30, 2018 were requested from the principal investigators. A scoring rubric was developed and implemented to assess study type, primary theme, and FDA priority area addressed by each article. The major subareas and findings from each priority area are presented. There were 766 articles in total, with 258 (34%) focusing on youth and/or young adults. Findings relevant to FDA from this review concern impact analysis, toxicity, health effects, addiction, marketing influences, communications, and behavior. IMPLICATIONS The Tobacco Centers of Regulatory Science, CENIC, and COMET have had a high output of scientific articles since 2013. These Centers are unique in that the FDA supports science specifically to guide future regulatory actions. The 258 articles that have focused on youth and/or young adults are providing data for regulatory actions by the FDA related to the key priority areas such as the addictiveness of non-cigarette products, the effects of exposure to electronic cigarette marketing on initiation and cessation, and the impact of flavored products on youth and young adult tobacco use. Future regulations to reduce tobacco use will be guided by the cumulative evidence. These Centers are one innovative mechanism to promote important outcomes to advance tobacco regulatory science.

Abstract
The popularity of e-cigarettes has skyrocketed in recent years, and most vapers use flavored e-cigarette products. Consumption of flavored e-cigarettes exceeds that of combustible cigarettes and other tobacco products among adolescents, who are particularly vulnerable to becoming nicotine dependent. Flavorings have been used by the tobacco industry since the 17th century, but the use of flavors by the e-cigarette industry to create products with "characterizing" flavors (i.e. flavors other than tobacco or menthol) has sparked a public health debate. This review addresses the possibility that characterizing flavors make nicotine more appealing, rewarding and addictive. It also discusses ways in which preclinical and clinical studies could improve our understanding of the mechanisms by which flavors may alter nicotine reward and reinforcement. Abstract
BACKGROUND E-cigarettes are the most prevalent tobacco product among US youth, but little is known about the health symptoms users experience. METHODS Between August 2016 and May 2017, we conducted a nationally representative cross-sectional telephone survey of 975 US youth ages 13-17. Respondents who reported ever trying e-cigarettes were asked whether they ever experienced six physical health symptoms they thought were caused by e-cigarette use. We examined whether symptoms varied by demographics and tobacco use. RESULTS Approximately 12.4% of respondents (n = 141) reported ever trying e-cigarettes. Of lifetime e-cigarette users, 37.0% reported past 30-day e-cigarette use, 17.2% reported past 30-day cigarette use, and 23.7% reported past 30-day use of another tobacco product. Most (63.3%) reported a symptom, most often cough (42.3%), followed by dizziness or lightheadedness (31.5%), headache or migraine (25.4%), dry or irritated mouth or throat (14.9%), shortness of breath (13.7%), change in or loss of taste (3.5%), and other (5.7%; nausea, dry eyes, earache, and tight chest). Headaches were more common among past 30-day e-cigarette users than non-users (43.8% vs. 14.6%). Shortness of breath was more common among past 30-day cigarette (33.8% vs. 9.5%) and other tobacco users (31.6% vs. 8.2%). Past 30-day cigarette users were also more likely to report any symptom (86.0% vs. 58.6%). CONCLUSIONS Most youth e-cigarette users attribute health symptoms to their e-cigarette use. Past 30-day users were more likely to report certain symptoms than non-users. Findings can educate health practitioners and school nurses about common symptoms youth may experience and inform prevention messages.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION JUUL is a closed-system e-cigarette that uses disposable pods with high concentrations of nicotine. JUUL use among youth arose exponentially since 2015, thus, it is essential to understand youths' reasons for liking/disliking JUUL to inform the regulation of the product. METHODS A cross-sectional survey was conducted in 4 high schools in Connecticut in 2018 (N = 3170). The survey assessed JUUL use in the past month and reasons for liking/disliking JUUL, which included pharmacological effects (e.g., subjective nicotine and/or flavor effects), product characteristics (e.g., flavors, nicotine, shape), peer influence (e.g., friends' use), comparisons to other e-cigarettes (e.g., lower harm), and concealability (e.g., hide from authority). RESULTS 30.2% (N = 956) were past-month users who used a JUUL on an average of 13.6 days (SD = 11.7; 25% reported daily use). The top reasons for liking JUUL were: "it gives me a buzz" (52%), "I like the flavors" (43%), and "my friends use it" (36%). The top reasons for disliking JUUL were: "the pods are expensive" (57%), "nicotine is too high" (20%), and "it gives me a headache" (18%). Regression models indicated that liking JUUL because of the buzz, ability to help concentrate, nicotine level, and ease of hiding it from teachers were associated with more days of use in the past month, while peer influence was negatively associated. Furthermore, disliking the high cost of pods was associated with more frequent use. CONCLUSIONS Comprehensive policies that regulate device characteristics that appeal to youth (e.g., nicotine level, flavors) are needed to prevent JUUL use among youth.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Given the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA)'s authority to regulate hookah, more research is needed to inform regulations intended to prevent youth from using hookah. This systematic review summarizes and assesses the literature related to hookah use among adolescents (11 to ≤18 years of age) in the United States from 2009 to 2017. METHODS Database searches yielded 867 peer-reviewed articles. After duplicates were removed, authors reviewed 461 articles for inclusion. Included articles (n = 55) were coded for study themes, study quality, and their relevance to FDA's research priorities. A qualitative synthesis is presented. RESULTS The following themes were identified: (1) prevalence of hookah use (n = 42), (2) tobacco use transitions (n = 7), (3) sociodemographic correlates (n = 35), (4) psychosocial risk factors (n = 21), (5) concurrent use of other tobacco products (n = 31), (6) concurrent use of other substances (n = 9), and (7) other (n = 15)-which includes low prevalence themes. The qualitative synthesis showed increasing rates of hookah use. Older age, male gender, positive social normative beliefs, higher peer use, as well as lower perceived risk were associated with hookah use. Longitudinal studies of youth hookah use showed bidirectional relationships between use of hookah and other tobacco products. All articles fell within FDA's research priority related to "behavior," and three priorities ("impact analysis," "health effects," and "toxicity") have not been explored for hookah use among US youth since 2009. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of hookah use among youth in the United States is increasing, thus more research is needed to inform policies targeted to protect this vulnerable population. IMPLICATIONS This study represents a novel contribution to our understanding of hookah use among youth in the United States from 2009-the year that the Family Smoking Prevention and Tobacco Control Act was passed-to 2017. In recent years, hookah has become a more popular tobacco product among US youth; however, to date, no systematic reviews of hookah use among this population exist. Results highlight implications for future US FDA regulatory policy and identify gaps in research to be addressed in future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE E-cigarettes are the most prevalent tobacco product used by adolescents. We sought to determine whether the presence of flavoring and/or the presence of nicotine at the first e-cigarette exposure predicted progression to current e-cigarette use (use in past 30 days) as well as escalation in use (number of days in the past 30 days) among adolescents. METHODS Adolescents from public high schools outside of Philadelphia, PA completed in-classroom surveys at baseline (9th grade) and at 6-month intervals for the following 18 months (fall 2018, beginning of 11th grade). Adolescents who reported ever having used e-cigarettes at baseline (N = 354) comprised the analytical sample. RESULTS We employed a two-part Latent Growth Curve Model including flavor, nicotine, and other covariates. Initial use of a flavored (vs unflavored) e-cigarette was associated with progression to current e-cigarette use (β = 0.54, z = 2.09, p = 0.04) and escalation in the number of days of e-cigarette use (β = 0.35, z = 2.58, p = 0.01) across the following 18 months. Initial use of an e-cigarette with nicotine (vs without nicotine) was associated with a greater number of days of e-cigarette use at baseline (β = 0.49, z = 2.16, p = 0.03). CONCLUSIONS The findings underscore the risk that flavoring and nicotine pose for progression beyond initial e-cigarette use. Regulations addressing flavoring and nicotine in e-cigarettes have the potential to reduce the number of adolescents who become current as well as frequent e-cigarette users.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION We conducted a systematic review of the literature on cigar research on youth to identify potential future research agenda to generate evidence to inform cigar regulations to prevent cigar use among youth. METHODS We searched articles on Medline, EMBASE, and PsycINFO in April 2017 to identify articles relevant to cigars and adolescents. Two independent coders examined 48 articles to determine eligibility: (1) published between 2000-April 2017; (2) published in English; (3) conducted in the United States; (4) published in a peer-review journal; (5) examined cigars, cigarillos, or little cigars; (6) included youth (12-18 years old); and (7) included empirical data. Three independent coders reviewed the included articles (n = 48) to identify whether the studies addressed FDA's Research Priorities. RESULTS The studies addressed FDA's Research Priorities of "behavior" (n = 48), "communications" (n = 4), "marketing influences" (n = 1), and "impact analysis" (n = 1). Studies on "behavior" underscored the need for improvements in measurement, such as using brand names and distinguishing cigar products. The review revealed the need for restrictions on cigar flavors, development of media campaigns and interventions, increasing the cost (via taxation), and evaluating the impact of cigar policies. CONCLUSIONS The studies mostly focused on surveillance of behaviors and use patterns, which revealed cigar specific issues to address in policies to decrease cigar use among youth. The lack of studies addressing other FDA's research priorities highlighted the critical need for future studies that inform prevention of youth cigar use.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This study examines the relationships between flavored tobacco use and single, dual, and poly tobacco product use, among adolescents. Given the increased use of flavored tobacco products, it is vital to understand if flavored products are associated with dual and poly tobacco product use. METHODS Data were obtained from the 2017 National Youth Tobacco Survey. Participants were 2042 adolescent past 30-day tobacco users. Multivariable multinomial logistic regression models were used to assess the relationship between flavored tobacco use and past 30-day single, dual, and poly (three or more) tobacco product use. Two analyses were conducted using different categories as referent groups to allow for a comprehensive examination of the relationship between all groups. Covariates included sex, grade level, race/ethnicity and exposure to tobacco marketing. RESULTS Approximately half of all adolescent tobacco users (45.7%) reported use of more than one product. The majority of adolescent tobacco users reported using flavors (69.4%). Flavored tobacco use was significantly correlated with a greater risk of dual (RRR: 2.09) and poly (RRR: 5.54) tobacco use, relative to single product use, controlling for covariates. Similarly, flavored tobacco use was significantly correlated with a greater risk of poly (RRR: 2.66) tobacco use, relative to dual tobacco use, controlling for covariates. CONCLUSIONS A positive relationship was observed for flavored tobacco use and multiple tobacco product use. Findings suggest the need to consider stronger regulations of flavored tobacco products. Similarly, as most adolescent tobacco users reported using flavors, findings suggest the need to emphasize flavored tobacco use in prevention and education programs.

Abstract
Objectives This study examined perceptions of factors that influence use and non-use of Alternative Tobacco Products (ATPs) among unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness. Methods Focus groups were conducted with 30 homeless 18-24 year olds (80% men, 50% Hispanic, 30% Black, 17% White, 20% multi-racial/other) recruited from drop-in centers in Los Angeles. Discussion focused on several ATPs (hookah, electronic cigarettes/vaping devices, cigarillos/little cigars, smokeless tobacco, snus, natural cigarettes, clove cigarettes), soliciting participants' experiences using each ATP and motivations for using or not using each ATP. Results Focus group transcripts were subjected to a rigorous coding procedure and 8 themes relating to the reasons that participants may or may not use ATPs emerged. Each ATP was associated with distinctive characteristics that motivated use and non-use. For example, hookah use was viewed positively with positive sensory and social features dominating the discussion, whereas electronic cigarettes were viewed largely negatively (i.e., that they were expensive and harmful to health). Homelessness characterized participants' responses to the extent that cost was a factor in their choice of ATP. Conclusions These data provide important, first look insights into factors that may influence the use and non-use of ATPs among unaccompanied youth experiencing homelessness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Youth tobacco use behaviors are predictive of patterns in adulthood and effect long-term health outcomes. Yet, few studies have examined the effect of initial subjective experiences (ISEs) during first tobacco use, which has been found to be an indicator of individuals. sensitivity to nicotine and vulnerability to dependence. OBJECTIVE The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of ISEs across a variety of tobacco products, evaluate the factor structure of ISEs by first tobacco product used, and examine the relationship between ISEs and recent (30-day) use of tobacco products across time, using a university sample. METHODS Exploratory factor analyses were conducted to identify latent factors present with respect to items measuring ISEs with tobacco, separately by tobacco product (e.g. cigarettes, cigars, hookah, e-cigarettes). Factor scores for positive and negative ISEs were calculated. Multiple logistic regression analyses were conducted to examine associations between ISEs and recent use of each tobacco product, adjusted for age at first use, sex, race/ethnicity, and cohort. RESULTS ISEs differ by the first tobacco product used. Associations between factor scores for positive and negative ISEs and recent use were found across a variety of tobacco products. Overall, positive ISEs were more strongly associated with recent use, relative to negative ISEs. CONCLUSIONS Further research is needed to identify genetic and biological pathways and social contexts influencing initial subjective experiences with tobacco use, in efforts to delay the initiation for tobacco use and reduce risk for continued use among young adults.

Abstract
Symptoms adolescents experience during their first time using a cigarette predict their current use, but little is known regarding the symptoms experienced during first e-cigarette use. We conducted a pilot study to understand the symptoms adolescents experience when they first tried cigarettes and e-cigarettes and the associations between these symptoms and current use. Participants were 41 adolescents in two U.S. cities who had tried cigarettes or e-cigarettes. We asked adolescents to recall the symptoms they experienced during their first cigarette or e-cigarette and categorized symptoms as negative (felt bad, coughing/chest pain, bad taste, upset stomach, dizzy/lightheaded) or positive (felt relaxed, rush/buzz). Adolescents reported fewer negative symptoms for first e-cigarette than first cigarette use (all p < 0.05). Current cigarette smoking was associated with endorsing fewer negative symptoms (OR = 0.49, 95% CI = [0.25, 0.95]) and more positive symptoms (OR = 7.11, 95% CI = [1.47, 34.33]) at first cigarette use. First e-cigarette use symptoms were not associated with current e-cigarette use. Adolescents reported fewer negative symptoms from first e-cigarette than from first cigarette, and e-cigarette symptoms did not influence use as they do for cigarettes. Additional research is needed to confirm these findings in longitudinal studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To examine urban-rural differences in US prevalences of traditional and emerging tobacco product use as well as dual or polytobacco use of these products. METHODS Our data were derived from wave 1 (2013-2014) of the Population Assessment of Tobacco and Health (PATH) Study. We estimated weighted prevalences of adult tobacco use across urban-rural geographies and examined prevalences classified by gender, poverty level, and region of the country. RESULTS Nationally, cigarette use and smokeless tobacco use, as well as dual or polytobacco use of traditional products, were more prevalent in rural than in urban areas. Conversely, cigarillo and hookah use and dual or polytobacco use of emerging products were higher in urban areas. There was no significant urban-rural difference in use of e-cigarettes. Gender, poverty, and region of the country did not seem to be driving most urban-rural differences, although differences related to cigarillo use and dual or polytobacco use of emerging products became nonsignificant after control for covariates. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight important urban-rural differences in tobacco use. Whether the changing tobacco product landscape will contribute to a continuation of rural health disparities remains to be seen.
