The Chemical Landscape of Leaf Surfaces and Its Interaction with the Atmosphere

Atmospheric chemists have historically treated leaves as inert surfaces that merely emit volatile hydrocarbons. However, a growing body of evidence suggests that leaves are ubiquitous substrates for multiphase reactions-implying the presence of chemicals on their surfaces. This Review provides an overview of the chemistry and reactivity of the leaf surface's "chemical landscape", the dynamic ensemble of compounds covering plant leaves. We classified chemicals as endogenous (originating from the plant and its biome) or exogenous (delivered from the environment), highlighting the biological, geographical, and meteorological factors driving their contributions. Based on available data, we predicted ≫2 μg cm-2 of organics on a typical leaf, leading to a global estimate of ≫3 Tg for multiphase reactions. Our work also highlighted three major knowledge gaps: (i) the overlooked role of ambient water in enabling the leaching of endogenous substances and mediating aqueous chemistry; (ii) the importance of phyllosphere biofilms in shaping leaf surface chemistry and reactivity; (iii) the paucity of studies on the multiphase reactivity of atmospheric oxidants with leaf-adsorbed chemicals. Although biased toward available data, we hope this Review will spark a renewed interest in the leaf surface's chemical landscape and encourage multidisciplinary collaborations to move the field forward.

Uptake, accumulation and translocation mechanisms of organophosphate esters in cucumber (Cucumis sativus) following foliar exposure

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) have been frequently detected in crops. However, few studies have focused on the uptake and translocation of OPEs in plants following foliar exposure. Herein, to investigate the foliar uptake, accumulation and translocation mechanisms of OPEs in plant, the cucumber (Cucumis sativus) was selected as a model plant for OPEs exposure via foliar application under control conditions. The results showed that the content of OPEs in the leaf cuticle was higher than that in the mesophyll on exposed leaf. Significant positive correlations were observed between the content of OPEs in the leaf cuticle and their log Kow and log Kcw values (P < 0.01), suggesting that OPEs with high hydrophobicity could not easily move from the cuticle to the mesophyll. The moderately hydrophobic OPEs, such as tris (2-chloroisopropyl) phosphate (TCPP, log Kow = 2.59), were more likely to move not only from the cuticle to the mesophyll but also from the mesophyll to the phloem. The majority of the transported OPEs accumulated in younger leaves (32-45 %), indicating that younger tissue was the primary target organ for OPEs accumulation after foliar exposure. Compared to chlorinated OPEs (except TCPP) and aryl OPEs, alkyl OPEs exhibited the strongest transport capacity in cucumber seedling due to their high hydrophilicity. Interestingly, tri-p-cresyl phosphate was found to be more prone to translocation compared to tri-m-cresyl phosphate and tri-o-cresyl phosphate, despite having same molecular weight and similar log Kow value. These results can contribute to our understanding of foliar uptake and translocation mechanism of OPEs by plant.

Sensitivity of midgut physiological parameters of Lymantria dispar L. larvae to benzo[a]pyrene in populations with different multigeneration contact to environmental pollutants

Accumulation of organic pollutants in the environment calls for sensing physiological parameters adequate to indicate the presence of contaminants and their effects on ecosystems. Evidence points to the importance of insect adaptations in their habitats for the assessment of sensitive biomarkers so we examined the influence of origin and multigenerational adaptations of the Lymantria dispar larvae to chronic benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P) treatment under laboratory conditions. The main aim was to compare reactions of larvae from unpolluted and polluted forests using alkaline phosphatase (ALP), acid phosphatase (ACP), and carboxylesterase (CE) specific activities in the midgut, including electrophoretic isoform patterns; midgut expression levels of Hsp70, larval development time (DT), and midgut mass (MM), after chronic exposure to 5 and 50 ng of B[a]P/g dry food weight. The biomarker potential of these parameters regarding larval pre-exposure history to pollution was estimated by principal component analysis (PCA). B[a]P treatment resulted in inhibition of ALP activity, a rise of CE activity, and reduction of MM in larvae from the unpolluted forest, while the population from the polluted forest showed significant elevation of Hsp70 expression in the midgut, prolonged DT, and reduction of MM. PCA confirmed variations in responses of the selected parameters regarding population origin. The obtained results provide insight into insect population variability concerning physiological responses to pollutants. It is indicative that all investigated physiological parameters of L. dispar larvae showed origin-dependent responses to long-term presence of B[a]P, which may be of great importance in ecotoxicological research.

Phylogenetic analysis of hyperaccumulator plant species for heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Increasing concentration of heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the soil may impose a serious threat to living organisms due to their toxicity and the ability to accumulate in plant tissues. The present review focuses on the phylogenetic relationships, sources, biotransformation and accumulation potential of hyperaccumulators for the priority HMs and PAHs. This review provides an opportunity to reveal the role of hyperaccumulators in removal of HMs and PAHs from soils, to understand the relationships between pollutants and their influence on the environment and to find potential plant species for soil remediation. The phylogenetic analysis results showed that the hyperaccumulators of some chemicals (Co, Cu, Mn, Ni, Zn, Cd) are clustered on the evolutionary tree and that the ability to hyperaccumulate different pollutants can be correlated either positively (Cd-Zn, Pb-Zn, Co-Cu, Cd-Pb) or negatively (Cu-PAHs, Co-Cd, Co-PAHs, Ni-PAHs, Cu-Ni, Mn-PAHs). Further research needs to be extended on the focus of commercializing the techniques including the native hyperaccumulators to remediate the highly contaminated soils.

Effects of forests on particle number concentrations in near-road environments across three geographic regions

Trees and other vegetation have been advocated as a mitigation measure for urban air pollution mainly due to the fact that they passively filter particles from the air. However, mounting evidence suggests that vegetation may also worsen air quality by slowing the dispersion of pollutants and by producing volatile organic compounds that contribute to formation of ozone and other secondary pollutants. We monitored nanoparticle (>10 nm) counts along distance gradients away from major roads along paired transects across open and forested landscapes in Baltimore (USA), Helsinki (Finland) and Shenyang (China) - i.e. sites in three biomes with different pollution levels - using condensation particle counters. Mean particle number concentrations averaged across all sampling sites were clearly reduced (15%) by the presence of forest cover only in Helsinki. For Baltimore and Shenyang, levels showed no significant difference between the open and forested transects at any of the sampling distances. This suggests that nanoparticle deposition on trees is often counterbalanced by other factors, including differing flow fields and aerosol processes under varying meteorological conditions. Similarly, consistent differences in high frequency data patterns between the transects were detected only in Helsinki. No correlations between nanoparticle concentrations and solar radiation or local wind speed as affecting nanoparticle abundances were found, but they were to some extent associated with canopy closure. These data add to the accumulating evidence according to which trees do not necessarily improve air quality in near-road environments.

Cross-interface transfer of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in a shallow urban lake in Shanghai, China based on the fugacity model

Shallow urban lakes are important urban ecosystems; however, these systems are subject to severe polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) contamination. An understanding of the distribution and dynamics of PAHs in lakes is required to restore the functions of lake ecosystems and to ensure the ecological security of urban water sources. The Quantitative Water Air Sediment Interaction (QWASI) model and partition coefficient and fugacity fraction methods were applied to estimate the multimedia transfers of PAHs in Dianshan Lake, a typical shallow lake in Shanghai, China. In addition, some new concepts and methods related to PAH transfers were introduced. The results showed that while the gas-solid partition in the area remained in non-equilibrium, the influence of pollution sources tended to weaken. Atmospheric advection was the main source of PAHs to the lake, and a portion of the net loss of advection was transformed into total flux of cross-interface transfers, in which transport fluxes from air to water and from water to sediment were dominant, with a significant correlation between the two types of transfer. The large resuspension of high molecular weight (HMW)-PAHs occurred, possibly related to frequent hydrodynamic disturbances. Furthermore, this study explored the distribution of PAHs among different compartments and the seasonal variation of multimedia transfers. Sensitivity analysis showed that the model is remarkably sensitive to four parameters including temperature and advection. Monte Carlo uncertainty analysis verified that the simulation results were stable and reliable. The results can provide a theoretical basis for the monitoring and control of shallow lake pollution.

Pollution characteristics and health risk assessment of phthalate esters in agricultural soil and vegetables in the Yangtze River Delta of China

As an important environmental reservoir of phthalate esters (PAEs), soil-plant system constitutes a key exposure pathway to human health. In this study, agricultural soil and vegetable samples were collected from the Yangtze River Delta (approximately 211,700 km²), one of the most developed regions in China, to determine the contamination characteristics of priority PAEs. The total concentrations of six PAEs ranged from 5.42 to 1580 ng·g^-1 dry weight in soils and from 10.9 to 16,400 ng·g^-1 dry weight in vegetables. Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) accounted for 88.3% and 61.9% of the total PAEs in soils and vegetables, respectively. The spatial distribution of PAEs in the soils was as follows: Shanghai city (70.8-1583 ng·g^-1 dw) > Anhui province (46.8-1530 ng·g^-1 dw) > Jiangsu province (14.4-558 ng·g^-1 dw) > Zhejiang province (5.40-488 ng·g^-1 dw). Non-cancer risks exist for adults and children in 6.5% and 7.8% of the sites, respectively. Carcinogenic risks were regarded unacceptable in 5.6% and 1.3% of the sites for adults and children, respectively. The bioconcentration factor (BCF) of PAEs showed positive correlation with lipid content of vegetables. A basic reference of the lipid-content threshold to guarantee the safety of leafy vegetables was proposed based on partition-limited model. We suggested to cultivate vegetables with lipid content <0.21% in most heavily contaminated area in the region. This study provides information for effectively controlling PAEs contamination in soil-plant system in developed districts.

Effects of cuticular wax content and specific leaf area on accumulation and partition of PAHs in different tissues of wheat leaf

An indoor simulation experiment was conducted to explore the effects of cuticular wax content and specific leaf area (SLA) on accumulation and distribution of PAHs in different tissues of wheat leaf. Three levels (0, 1.25, 6.0 mg L^-1) of mixed solution of five PAHs (Σ₅PAHs) including phenanthrene (PHE), anthracene (ANT), pyrene (PYR), benz[a]anthracene (BaA), and benzo[a]pyrene (BaP) were sprayed on leaves of seven varieties of winter wheat for every other day during 20 consecutive days. Shoot and root biomass of wheat under 6.0 mg L^-1 Σ₅PAHs exposure were 5.87 and 0.33 g, which were significantly (p < 0.05) lower than those (7.14 and 0.65 g) without spraying Σ₅PAHs solution, respectively. Elevated Σ₅PAHs concentration in spraying solution significantly (p < 0.0001) decreased cuticular wax content (59.1 and 65.1 vs. 67.8 mg g^-1) in leaves of wheat but exerted slight effects on SLA. Regardless of spraying Σ₅PAHs or not, SLA in leaves of Jiaomai (269-276 cm² g^-1) and Zhengmai (265-285 cm² g^-1) and cuticular wax content (104-118 mg g^-1) in leaves of Zhengmai were significantly higher than other varieties of wheat, respectively. Σ₅PAHs concentration in cuticular waxes ranged from 24,616 to 106,353 μg kg^-1, which was 2~3 orders and 1~2 orders of magnitude higher than that in mesophylls (46.0-535 μg kg^-1) and leaves (785-5366 μg kg^-1). There was a significant (r = 0.46, p < 0.05, n = 28) positive correlation between SLA and Σ₅PAHs concentration in wheat leaves when spraying 1.25 mg L^-1 of Σ₅PAHs. The present study indicated that cuticular wax content was significantly (p < 0.01) positive correlated with Σ₅PAHs concentration in the leaves and the translocation factor (TF_w-m) of PHE, ANT, PYR, and Σ₅PAHs from cuticular wax to mesophyll. Based on principal component analysis (PCA), cuticular wax content was the main limiting factor for folia uptake of PAHs in winter wheat. The present study suggested that cuticular wax could play significant roles in foliar uptake of PAHs of wheat via affecting their accumulation in cuticular wax and translocation to mesophyll.

Plant-microorganisms interaction promotes removal of air pollutants in Milan (Italy) urban area

Plants and phyllosphere microorganisms may effectively contribute to reducing air pollution in cities through the adsorption and biodegradation of pollutants onto leaves. In this work, during all seasons, we sampled atmospheric particulate matter (PM₁₀) and leaves of southern magnolia Magnolia grandiflora and deodar cedar Cedrus deodara, two evergreen plant species widespread in the urban area of Milan where the study was carried out. We then quantified Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) both in PM₁₀ and on leaves and used sequencing of 16S rRNA gene, shotgun metagenomics and qPCR analyses to investigate the microbial communities hosted by the sampled leaves. Taxonomic and functional profiles of epiphytic bacterial communities differed between host plant species and seasons and the microbial communities on leaves harboured genes involved in the degradation of hydrocarbons. Evidence collected in this work also suggested that the abundance of hydrocarbon-degrading microorganisms on evergreen leaves increased with the concentration of hydrocarbons when atmospheric pollutants were deposited at high concentration on leaves, and that the biodegradation on the phyllosphere can contribute to the removal of PAHs from the urban air.

Characterization of atmospheric and soil polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and evaluation of air-soil relationship in the Southwest of Buenos Aires province (Argentina)

Sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) proposed by the US EPA as priority were analyzed in air and soil samples in the Southwest of Buenos Aires, Argentina, in order to study the levels, distribution, sources and fugacity ratios of PAHs, evaluating the relationship between them. For this, 10 passive air samplers (XAD-2® resin) were deployed along the area and replaced three-monthly from January to December 2015. PAHs were analyzed through gas chromatography -mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results obtained showed that total PAHs levels (∑16) ranged from 27.97 to 1052.99 ng m^-3 and from 52.40 to 2118.34 ng. g^-1 d.w. for air and soil samples, respectively. The highest air- PAHs levels were registered in Bahía Blanca city (1052.99 ng. m^-3, d.w.) an urban-industrial site, while the highest soil-PAHs levels were found in La Vitícola (2118.34 ng. g^-1, d.w.), a rural location closed to a high traffic national route. For all sites the highest levels were observed during the winter; however, both spatial and temporal variations were only statistically significant for certain specific PAHs. Diagnostic ratios + PCA, determined dominance of pyrolytic sources. Further, data showed that source of PAHs could be attributed to vehicular and industrial emissions (observed in all periods), biomass combustion (linked mainly to warm period) and domestic emissions (linked mainly to cold period). Finally, fugacity ratios resulted <1, indicating that soil and air samples were not in equilibrium for the majority of PAHs determining a net tendency of air PAHs towards deposition while soil acted principally as a sink.

Biomonitoring of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and synthetic musk compounds with Masson pine (Pinus massoniana L.) needles in Shanghai, China

Twenty-six polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and four synthetic musk compounds (SMCs) accumulated by Masson pine needles from different areas of Shanghai were investigated in the present study. Concentrations of Σ₂₆PAHs (sum of 26 PAHs) ranged from 234 × 10^-3 to 5370 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1. Levels of Σ₂₆PAHs in different sampling areas followed the order: urban areas (Puxi and Pudong) > suburbs > Chongming. Total concentrations of 16 USEPA priority PAHs ranged from 225 × 10^-3 to 5180 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1, ranking at a relatively high level compared to other regions around the world. Factor analysis and multi-linear regression model has identified six sources of PAHs with relative contributions of 15.1% for F1 (vehicle emissions), 47.8% for F2 (natural gas and biomass combustion), 7.8% for F3 (oil), 10.6% for F4 (coal combustion), 15.7% for F5 ("anthracene" source) and 3.0% for F6 (coke tar). Total concentrations of 4 SMCs varied between 0.071 × 10^-3 and 2.72 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1 in pine needles from Shanghai. SMCs with the highest detected frequency were Galaxolide and musk xylene, followed by musk ketone and Tonalide. The highest level of SMCs was found near industrial park and daily chemical plant. The results obtained from this study may have important reference value for local government in the control of atmospheric organic pollution.

Sorptive Capacities of Nonpolymeric Plant Lipids for Hydrophobic Chemicals Determined by Passive Dosing

Vegetation plays an important role in the partitioning, transport, and fate of semivolatile hydrophobic organic chemicals (HOCs) in the environment. Leaf/air partition ratios ( K_leaf/air) of HOCs are highly variable for different plant species. The differences cannot be fully explained by the fraction of lipids in the leaves or the thickness of the cuticle. Our goal was to elucidate the importance of nonpolymeric lipids in determining K_leaf/air. To do this, we extracted organic matter from 7 plant species using solvents that do not extract the polymeric lipids cutin and cutan, to yield extractable organic matter (EOM). We used passive dosing to determine the partition ratios of selected HOCs between the EOM of the leaves and our reference lipid, olive oil ( K_{EOM/olive oil}). In addition, we measured analogous partition ratios for three lipid standards. Proton nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy was used to characterize the composition of lipids. Differences in K_{EOM/olive oil} of two polychlorinated biphenyls and four chlorinated benzenes were below a factor of 2 in the plant species studied, indicating that the reported differences in K_leaf/air are not caused by differences in the sorptive capacities of nonpolymeric lipids or that our EOM is not representative of all nonpolymeric leaf lipids.

Direct determination of surfactant effects on the uptake of gaseous parent and alkylated PAHs by crop leaf surfaces

The partitioning of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) into crop systems raises concerns about their potential harm to ecosystem and human health. To assess parent and alkylated PAHs accumulation accurately, the uptake of individual 7-isopropyl-1-methylphenanthrene (Retene), 3-methyl-phenanthrene (3-MP) and phenanthrene (Phe) by living maize, soybean and potato leaf surfaces, as well as the effects of cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB) and anionic sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS), were examined in situ using fiber-optic fluorimetry. For each of three PAH chemicals, the uptake achieved equilibrium between the air and living crop leaf surfaces within the 120-h monitoring period. There is inter-chemical and inter-species variability in terms of both the time required reaching equilibrium, the equilibrated adsorption concentration (EAC) and the overall air-surfaces mass transfer coefficient (kAS). The EAC of the three PAHs for each of the three crops' leaf surfaces increased with the number of alkyl substitutions on the aromatic ring. For any given PAHs, the EAC values followed the sequence of potato > soybean > maize, which was dominantly controlled by their leaf surface polarity index ((O+N)/C). The presence of CTMAB and SDBS increased the EAC of PAHs in the three crops' leaf surfaces by 6.5-17.1%, due to the plasticizing effect induced by the surface-sorbed surfactants, and the enhancement degree was closely associated with leaf-wax content and lg KOW values of PAHs. In addition, the two surfactants promoted the kAS values of the three chemicals by 7.7-23.3%. These results demonstrated that surfactants promoted the uptake of PAHs onto the crop leaf surfaces, potentially threatening the agricultural product safety.

In-situ examination of graphene and graphene oxide impact on the depuration of phenanthrene and fluoranthene adsorbed onto spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) leaf surfaces

To further assess the human being's exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) through the dietary pathway, understanding the partitioning of these chemicals co-existed with nanomaterials in edible vegetable systems deserves specific consideration. In this study, the fiber-optic fluorimetry was applied to in situ examine the effects of graphene (GNS) and graphene oxide (GO) nanosheets on the quantification and depuration of three-ringed phenanthrene (Phe) and four-ringed fluoranthene (Fla) adsorbed individually onto the living spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.) surfaces. When the GNS and GO dosages separately increased to the maximum values: a respective red-shift of 4-5 nm and blue-shift of 2-3 nm occurred for the optimal detection emission wavelengths (λ_em) of the two PAHs, indicating that individual GNS and GO resulted in different changes to the epicuticular wax (ECW) polarity; GNS-inducing fluorescence quenching for the PAHs was about two times greater than GO, owing to the stronger π-π interactions between PAH molecules and GNS relative to GO; the volatilization coefficients (k_C1) were reduced by 31.1% versus 26.7% for Phe, and 51.6% versus 34.4% for Fla, mainly via providing an additional adsorbent and promoting the accessibility of the leaf cuticle; respective photolysis coefficients (k_P2) of Phe and Fla decreased by 42.9% and 50.0% with GNS, primarily owing to the enhancement of the ECW light-adsorption capacity, but increased by 33.3% and 40.0% with GO due to its photocatalytic activities; overall, total depuration coefficients (k_T1, k_T2) of the two PAHs decreased by 11.1-55.6%. These findings demonstrate that GNS and GO significantly alter the depuration behavior of PAHs in vegetable systems, potentially posing a threat to the safety of edible vegetables.

Bio-accumulation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Grey Mangrove (Avicennia marina) along Arabian Gulf, Saudi Coast

The Arabian Gulf is considered as one of the most important sources for the crude oil all over the world. Due to the vast oil exploration and exploitation, huge amounts of organic pollutants infiltrate to the gulf. An important class of organic pollutants is polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). One of the marine habitats in Arabian Gulf area is the mangrove stands, that are undoubtedly impacted by all anthropogenic factors like oil industries and sewage discharge. In the monitoring framework for mangrove ecosystem along Saudi coasts, nine mangrove stands were examined for the accumulation of PAHs in the Arabian Gulf coast. PAHs were measured using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry. The mean values detected for total PAHs in mangrove sediments, roots and leaf were 105.39, 680.0 and 282.4 ng/g, respectively. The trend of total PAHs concentrations in all sites showed the descending order: roots > leaf > sediments. Despite the sandy nature and low organic carbon contents of the mangrove sediments, moderate values of PAHs were detected in the major sites. PAH bio-accumulation factors for roots are higher than that in leaf. The diagnostic ratios revealed that the sources of PAHs are mainly pyrogenic, except for Damam and Damam Port that were found to be petrogenic.

Bio-concentration of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the grey Mangrove (Avicennia marina) along eastern coast of the Red Sea

There are numerous sources of chemical pollutants which can impact the mangrove ecosystem through adjacent waters, industrial and sewage discharges and air depositions. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are semi volatile ubiquitous anthropogenic pollutants detected in all environmental compartments. In the monitoring framework for the mangrove ecosystem along the Red Sea coast of Saudi Arabia, nine mangrove stands were examined for the accumulation of PAHs. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons were measured using Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC-MS). The mean values detected for total PAHs in sediments, roots and leaf were 2.98, 8.57 and 23.43 ng/g respectively. The trend of the total PAHs concentration in all sites showed the descending order: leaf > roots > sediments. Beside the sandy nature of the sediments, the presences of all stands in remote areas fare from the direct anthropogenic effects lead to these relative low values. PAH bio-concentration factors for leaf are two to three magnitudes higher than that in roots, suggesting atmosphere deposition /leaf uptake mechanism in addition to the sediment/root mechanism. The diagnostic ratios revealed that the sources of PAHs are mainly pyrogenic.

Variation in foliar uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in six varieties of winter wheat

To investigate intraspecific variations of foliar uptake of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) of winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), leaves of six varieties including Changwu 521 (CW), Hedong TX-006 (HD), Jiaomai 266 (JM), Xiaoyan 22 (XY), Yunong 949 (YN), and Zhongmai 175 (ZM) were exposed to three levels of (0, 0.25, and 1.5 mg L^-1) mixture of six selected PAHs (phenanthrene, anthracene, pyrene, benz[a]anthracene, benzo[a]pyrene, and benzo[g,h,i]perylene). After 10 consecutive days of application, all the six selected PAHs (Σ₆ PAHs) were determined in the leaves of the six varieties of the winter wheat. There were apparent intraspecific differences in foliar uptake of PAHs in the winter wheat. The highest concentrations of Σ₆ PAHs in the leaves of YN variety (64.6 mg kg^-1) were approximate two times of the lowest concentrations in the leaves of HD variety (29.6 mg kg^-1). Both individual PAHs and Σ₆ PAHs in the cuticular waxes were significantly (p < 0.01) higher than those in leaves and far higher than those in roots, indicating that the cuticular waxes could play significant role in foliar uptake of PAHs. The present results also showed that the concentrations PAHs in leaves were positively (p < 0.05) correlated with the water solubility of the six selected PAHs. In addition, the present study suggested that there was basipetal translocation of PAHs in the winter wheat after foliar application of PAHs, although the mechanism was yet to be further studied.

Uptake of PAHs by cabbage root and leaf in vegetable plots near a large coking manufacturer and associations with PAHs in cabbage core

Samples of ambient air (including gaseous and particulate phases), dust fall, surface soil, rhizosphere soil, core (edible part), outer leaf, and root of cabbage from eight vegetable plots near a large coking manufacturer were collected during the harvest period. Concentrations, compositions, and distributions of parent PAHs in different samples were determined. Our results indicated that most of the parent PAHs in air occurred in the gaseous phase, dominated by low molecular weight (LMW) species with two to three rings. Specific isomeric ratios and principal component analysis were employed to preliminarily identify the local sources of parent PAHs emitted. The main emission sources of parent PAHs could be apportioned as a mixture of coal combustion, coking production, and traffic tailing gas. PAH components with two to four rings were prevailing in dust fall, surface soil, and rhizosphere soil. Concentrations of PAHs in surface soil exhibited a significant positive correlation with topsoil TOC fractions. Compositional profiles in outer leaf and core of cabbage, dominated by LMW species, were similar to those in the local air. Overall, the order of parent PAH concentration in cabbage was outer leaf > root > core. Partial correlation analysis and multivariate linear stepwise regression revealed that PAH concentrations in cabbage core were closely associated with PAHs present both in root and in outer leaf, namely, affected by adsorption, then absorption, and translocation of PAHs from rhizosphere soil and ambient air, respectively.

Effects of benzo[a]pyrene dietary intake to antioxidative enzymes of Lymantria dispar (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae) larvae from unpolluted and polluted forests

Anthropogenic activity in industrial development has imposed great threats to the environment and wildlife in the form of persistent organic pollutants. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) tend to accumulate in vegetation foliage which is the main food source of polyphagous insect species Lymantria dispar L. Origin and multigenerational adaptation of L. dispar population to environmental challenges strongly condition the enzymes' sensitivity to pollutants. In this study, our aim was to investigate response of the superoxide dismutase (SOD), catalase (CAT) and glutathione S-transferase (GST) to the chronic dietary exposure of benzo[a]pyrene in the midgut tissues and hemolymph of two L. dispar populations originating from unpolluted and polluted forest habitat. Midgut tissue of the larvae from the polluted forest showed significant increase in SOD, CAT and GST activity, while in unpolluted forest's larvae SOD and CAT showed elevated activities in hemolymph. L. dispar populations adapted to different level of pollution in their environment and expressed distinct tissue-dependent antioxidative enzyme sensitivity to benzo[a]pyrene diet, implying high potential for further elucidation of these enzymes as molecular biomarkers.

Dependence of Plant Uptake and Diffusion of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons on the Leaf Surface Morphology and Micro-structures of Cuticular Waxes

The uptake of organic chemicals by plants is considered of great significance as it impacts their environmental transport and fate and threatens crop growth and food safety. Herein, the dependence of the uptake, penetration, and distribution of sixteen polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) on the morphology and micro-structures of cuticular waxes on leaf surfaces was investigated. Plant surface morphologies and wax micro-structures were examined by scanning emission microscopy, and hydrophobicities of plant surfaces were monitored through contact angle measurements. PAHs in the cuticles and inner tissues were distinguished by sequential extraction, and the cuticle was verified to be the dominant reservoir for the accumulation of lipophilic pollutants. The interspecies differences in PAH concentrations cannot be explained by normalizing them to the plant lipid content. PAHs in the inner tissues became concentrated with the increase of tissue lipid content, while a generally negative correlation between the PAH concentration in cuticles and the epicuticular wax content was found. PAHs on the adaxial and abaxial sides of a leaf were differentiated for the first time, and the divergence between these two sides can be ascribed to the variations in surface morphologies. The role of leaf lipids was redefined and differentiated.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the leaves of twelve plant species along an urbanization gradient in Shanghai, China

Plants, particularly their leaves, play an important role in filtering both gas-phase and particle-phase polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). However, many studies have focused on the accumulation and adsorption functions of plant leaves, possibly underestimating the effects that plants have on air quality. Therefore, eight tree species from different locations in Shanghai were selected to assess PAH filtering (via adsorption and capture) using washed and unwashed plant leaves. The differences in the total PAH contents in the washed leaves were constant for the different species across the different sampling sites. The PAH levels decreased in the following order: industrial areas > traffic areas > urban areas > background area. The PAH compositions in the different plant leaves were dominated by fluorene (Fle), phenanthrene (Phe), anthracene (Ant), chrysene (Chr), fluoranthene (Flu), and pyrene (Pyr); notably, Phe accounted for 49.4-76.7% of the total PAHs. By comparing the PAH contents in the washed leaves with the PAH contents in the unwashed leaves, Pittosporum tobira (P. tobira), Ginkgo biloba (G. biloba), and Platanus acerifolia (P. acerifolia) were found to be efficient species for adsorbing PAHs, while Osmanthus fragrans (O. fragrans), Magnolia grandiflora (M. grandiflora), and Prunus cerasifera Ehrh. (P. cerasifera Ehrh.) were efficient species for capturing PAHs. The efficiencies of the plant leaves for the removal of PAHs from air occurred in the order of low molecular weight > medium molecular weight > high molecular weight PAHs.

Characterization of PM2.5-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and its deposition in Populus tomentosa leaves in Beijing

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous constituents of air particulate matter and can be taken up by plants from the atmosphere. However, the purification of particulate-bound PAHs in the atmosphere by greening tree species has not been reported. In this study, we assess the concentrations, distribution, and sources of PM_2.5-bound PAHs at three representative sites of Beijing in April, July, and November (non-heating period) and analyze the correlation between PAHs in Populus tomentosa leaves and in atmospheric PM_2.5. The total PAH concentrations in PM_2.5 were in the range of 19.85 ± 13.59-42.01 ± 37.17 ng/m³ with mean value of 31.35 ng/m³ at the three sites, and the PM_2.5-bound PAHs concentrations in the two suburban sites (YF and YQ) were significantly higher than that in urban site (XZM) in November (autumn). At the three sites, the high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs in PM_2.5 were dominant, accounting for 54.09-64.90% of total PAHs and the concentration of HMW PAHs was, on average, 9.1 times higher than that of low molecular weight (LWM) PAHs. Principal component analysis combined with diagnostic ratio analysis indicated that vehicle emission, wood combustion, and industrial processes were the main sources for PM_2.5-bound PAHs in the non-heating period of Beijing. However, the LMW PAHs were dominant in P. tomentosa leaves. The concentrations of HMW PAHs (BbF, BkF, BaP, IcdP, and BghiP) in P. tomentosa leaves reached 26.11 ± 2.39, 41.42 ± 7.77, and 55.70 ± 12.33 ng/g at YQ, XZM, and YF in autumn, respectively, and were, on average, 2.1 times higher than those in April (spring) at the three sites. The ∑5PAHs concentration in P. tomentosa leaves accumulatively increased from spring to autumn, which was not related to the temporal variation of PM_2.5-bound PAHs. Nevertheless, the ∑5PAHs mean concentrations followed the order of YF > XZM > YQ. This trend was consistent with spatial distribution of atmosphere PM_2.5, indicating that HMW PAHs in leaves increased with the increase of atmosphere PM_2.5 concentration. Our results indicated that P. tomentosa may be used as a useful species for removing PAHs from the air and biomonitoring PAHs in atmosphere.

Spatial and temporal distributions of hexabromocyclododecanes in the vicinity of an expanded polystyrene material manufacturing plant in Tianjin, China

To investigate the environmental fate of 3 main hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (α-, β-, and γ-HBCDs), samples from various environmental media, including outdoor settled dust, soil, sediment, plant tissues (holly, cypress and pine) and marine species (shrimp, crab and fish) were obtained around an expanded polystyrene material manufacturing plant in Tianjin, China. The 3 main HBCD diastereoisomers were detected with the total concentrations ranging from 328 to 31,752 ng/g dry weight (dw), 2.91-1730 ng/g dw, 23.5-716 ng/g dw, 3.45-2494 ng/g dw, and 0.878-44.8 ng/g dw in the dust, soil, sediment, plant tissues, and marine species, respectively. This indicated that a point source of HBCDs could bring wide impact on its vicinal environment. A significant increasing trend of HBCDs concentrations was noted, as indicated by 12.9-41.6% of increasing rates in total concentrations of HBCDs at four sediment sites in the past five years. The diastereoisomer profiles were sorted into 3 groups: dust, soil and sediment, which had no statistical difference from commercial EPS-products (p > 0.05); plant tissues, which showed a moderate increase of α-isomer (22.9 ± 3.3%); and marine species, which were dominated by α-isomer (62.6 ± 2.8%). For α- and β-isomers, the results of enantiomeric analysis showed a preferential accumulation of the (+)-enantiomer in part of plant tissues and all marine organisms (p < 0.05). However, there was no enantioselectivity of the 3 isomers in dust, soil, and sediment samples (p > 0.05). Besides, marine food web magnification is observed for HBCDs, with trophic magnification factors close to 2. The daily intakes of HBCDs were estimated to be 0.058-5.84 ng/kg-bw/day for local residents through dust and soil ingestion and 0.048-8.43 ng/kg-bw/day for Tianjin citizens through seafood consumption.

PAHs uptake and translocation in Cinnamomum camphora leaves from Shanghai, China

Foliage uptake and inner-leaf translocation of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) by Cinnamomum camphora from different urbanized areas were comparatively investigated in this study. Spatial and seasonal variations of ∑₁₆PAHs in leaves were observed, likely due to the diversity of leaf wax contents sampled in different seasons and locations. A negative correlation between the wax contents and ∑₁₆PAHs concentrations in the cuticular wax was observed. The low values of TF_f-m (translocation factor from foliar dust to mesophyll) indicated a poor translocation ability of PAHs from the foliar dust to the mesophyll. However, the transportation of PAHs from the foliar dust to the cuticular wax was the primary pathway of leaf accumulation, and TF_f-w (translocation factor from foliar dust to cuticular wax) values showed an increasing tendency of low molecular weight (LMW) PAHs and a decreasing tendency of high molecular weight (HMW) PAHs. This result indicated a rapid diffusion of gas-phase PAHs with LMW and a slow desorption of the particle-bound PAHs with HMW in the foliar dust. The concentrations of PAHs pollutants followed an obvious order of Rural area>Suburb area>Urban area in winter, and the higher contaminated locations were associated with some pollution sources nearby. Furthermore, the results of principal component analysis with multiple linear regression analysis analysis indicated that PAHs in leaves derived mainly from vehicle emissions. Overall, the accumulation and transformation of PAHs in leaves suggests the extensive amount of atmospheric pollutant release in high urbanization area.

Sorption equilibrium of emerging and traditional organic contaminants in leafy rape, Chinese mustard, lettuce and Chinese cabbage

Emerging and petroleum contaminants could transfer into food chains by plant uptake, potentially causing food security problems. To build a prediction model, the sorption equilibrium and uptake kinetics of toluene, p-xylene, naphthalene, bisphenol A, and 4-bromo-diphenyl ether in some common leafy vegetables including leafy rape, Chinese mustard, lettuce and Chinese cabbage were examined. The kinetic experiments revealed that high sorption rates were observed for these plants that had high lipid contents. For two emerging contaminants with polar functional groups, their resulting isotherms were strongly linear (R(2) = 0.92 to 1.00), indicating that the sorption was dominated by partitioning. Moreover, regression correlation showed that log Klip, the lipid-water partition coefficient, and log Kow, the octanol-water coefficient, for these organic chemicals were strongly linear-related, following the equation: log Klip = 0.894 × log Kow+0.219 (R(2) = 0.953). The correlation equation allows the prediction of the sorption capacity of plant species for an organic compound when the plant composition and the log Kow of the chemical are determined. This improved model containing different organic chemicals with a wide range of log Kow (2.73-4.80) and including emerging contaminants was established, which shows further utilization for predicting the sorption of organic contaminants by plants.

Organic Pollutant Penetration through Fruit Polyester Skin: A Modified Three-compartment Diffusion Model

The surface of plants is covered by a continuous but heterogeneous cuticular membrane (CM). Serving as the first protective barrier, the uptake and transport behavior of organic pollutants at this interface continue to engage the research efforts of environmental chemist. To date, the contributions of cuticular components as a defense against the organic pollutants penetration remain unresolved. In this study, the unsteady-state penetration characteristics of phenanthrene (PHE) through isolated fruit CM was investigated. PHE penetration was differentiated by three cuticular compartments: epicuticular waxes (EW), cuticle proper (CP) and cuticular layer (CL). The driving force for PHE penetration was ascribed to the sharp concentration gradient built up endogenously by cuticular compartments with different lipophilic affinities. A modified penetration model was established and verified in terms of its general suitability for the hydrophobic chemicals and CMs of various plant species (apple, tomato and potato). The new three-compartment model demonstrates much higher accuracy in characterizing the uptake and transport behavior of semivolatile chemicals with fewer limitations in terms of environmental conditions and complexity (e.g., coexisting contaminants and temperature). This model could contribute to a more comprehensive understanding on the role of polymeric lipids in the organic pollutant sorption and transport into plants.

In situ investigation into surfactant effects on the clearance of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed onto soybean leaf surfaces

The partitioning of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in agricultural crop leaves, contributes to the exposure of organisms to these chemicals through the dietary pathway. To precisely predict the fate of PAHs and crop safety, the clearance of three-ringed phenanthrene (Phe) and four-ringed pyrene (Pyr) adsorbed individually onto living soybean leaf surfaces, as well as the effects of two surfactants, namely, an ionic surfactant (sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate, SDBS) and a non-ionic surfactant (polyoxyethyleneglycol dodecyl ether, Brij35), were investigated in situ using the laser-induced nanosecond time-resolved fluorescence (LITRF) method. The effects varied significantly with surfactant types primarily in terms of the elimination rates and the final residues of PAH chemicals. With increasing SDBS and Brij35 concentrations, volatilization rate constants (kC) of both Phe and Pyr initially decreased at fast rates and then at more moderate rates later on, resulting from the plasticizing effect of surfactants adsorbed on leaf surfaces. In addition, the photolysis rate constants (kP) decreased with the presence of SDBS but increased with the presence of Brij35. Overall, the total clearance rates of PAHs (kT) adsorbed onto living soybean leaf surfaces were inhibited by the presence of SDBS but promoted by the presence of Brij35. These observations show that surfactants may significantly alter the clearance of PAHs in agricultural systems, and the potential impact of surfactants on crop safety is closely related to surfactant types in natural environments.

Uptake Pathway, Translocation, and Isomerization of Hexabromocyclododecane Diastereoisomers by Wheat in Closed Chambers

To study the uptake pathways of 3 main hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (α-, β-, and γ-HBCDs) in wheat, four closed chambers were designed to expose wheat to HBCDs via air and/or soil for 4 weeks. The results showed that HBCDs could be absorbed by wheat both via root from soil and via leaf from air. The Rt values (ratio of HBCDs from root-to-leaf translocation to the total accumulation in leaves) ranging from 14.4 to 29.8% suggested that acropetal translocation within wheat was limited. A negative linear relationship was found between log Rt and log Kow of the HBCD diastereoisomers (p < 0.05). The bioconcentration factors (BCFs, (μg/g wheat tissues)/(μg/g soil)) were in the order α- > β- > γ-HBCD in wheat roots and stems, being negatively related to their Kow values. No such correlation was found in leaves, where the HBCDs came mainly from air distribution. The results of enantiomeric fractions indicated that the (-)-enantiomer of α- and γ-HBCDs and the (+)-β-enantiomer were selectively accumulated. Furthermore, β- and γ-HBCDs were transformed to α-HBCD in the wheat, with 0.309-4.80% and 0.920-8.40% bioisomerization efficiencies at the end of the experiment, respectively, being the highest in leaves. Additionally, no isomerization product from α-HBCD was found.

Gaseous polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon concentrations are higher in urban forests than adjacent open areas during summer but not in winter--Exploratory study

While the potential of plants to uptake polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is widely acknowledged, empirical evidence of the effects of this process on local atmospheric PAH concentrations and human health is tenuous. We measured gaseous PAH concentrations using passive samplers in urban tree-covered areas and adjacent open, treeless areas in a near-road environment in Finland to gain information on the ability of urban vegetation to improve air quality. The ability of urban, mostly deciduous, vegetation to affect PAHs was season dependent: during summer, concentrations were significantly higher in tree-covered areas, while in the fall, concentrations in open areas exceeded those in tree-covered areas. During winter, concentrations in tree-covered areas were either lower or did not differ from those in open areas. Results of this study imply that the commonly believed notion that trees unequivocally improve air quality does not apply to PAHs studied here.

In situ determination of the depuration of three- and four-ringed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons co-adsorbed onto mangrove leaf surfaces

A dual-wavelength fiber-optic fluorimetry for the in situ simultaneous determinations of fluorene (Flu), phenanthrene (Phe) and pyrene (Pyr) adsorbed onto the leaf surfaces of living Avicennia marina (Am) seedling were developed and used to study the depuration kinetics of the three PAHs, adsorbed individually or mixed together, onto living Am leaf surfaces. Limits of detection for the in situ measurements of adsorbed Flu, Phe and Pyr were 4.62, 2.75 and 1.38 ng spot(-1), respectively. The depuration kinetics of the three selected polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are divided into rapid and slow phases; both phases followed the same first-order kinetics with relative clearance rates of Flu > Phe > Pyr during the rapid phase, and a clearance rate order of Pyr > Flu > Phe during the slow phase. For the three PAHs co-adsorbed on living Am leaf surfaces, a significant synergistic effect was detected during the rapid phase clearance; conversely, an antagonistic effect was observed during the slow phase. However, the synergistic effect dominated during both phases of the depuration process, and the co-adsorption of PAHs promoted the clearance of all three compounds from the mangrove leaf surfaces. These findings demonstrate a novel analytical method for in situ characterization of multiple PAHs adsorbed onto the plant surfaces.

Distribution of heavy metals and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in holm oak plant-soil system evaluated along urbanization gradients

Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were analysed in topsoil and in Quercus ilex L. leaves from holm oak woodlands located along urbanization gradients (urban, periurban and extraurban sites) in two Italian regions (Campania and Tuscany). In each sampling site, the metal bioavailability factors (MBFs) and the pollutant bioaccumulation factors (BAFs) were calculated to estimate the fraction of each total metal concentration in soil potentially available to root uptake and to know the fate of both HMs and PAHs in the plant-soil system. In general, the results indicated a low atmospheric deposition of pollutants and, in some cases, leaves and soils accumulated higher HM and PAH concentrations in the most urbanized areas. Correlation analyses showed that in each sampling site topsoil and leaves were exposed to the same atmospheric inputs of HMs and PAHs, although to a different extent. Notwithstanding the MBFs and BAFs differed between the two regions for the most HMs, they did not show a clear pattern in relation to the urbanization gradient. However, some information could be deduced by these ratios: the high BAF calculated for Mn shows that the foliar uptake plays an important role in accumulation of this metal. Moreover, for PAHs the different values of BAFs among low and high molecular weight compounds suggest their different fate, the first accumulated in leaves by stomata and the latter preferentially deposited on topsoil.

Distribution of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface water from the upper reach of the Yellow River, Northwestern China

The concentrations of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in water, suspended particulate matters (SPMs), and sediments in the Lanzhou reach of the Yellow River were investigated in this study. The total PAH concentrations ranged from 548 to 2598 ng/L in water, 1502 to 11,562 ng/g in SPMs, and 181 to 1583 ng/g in sediments. The compositions of PAHs showed that 2- to 3-ring PAHs were abundant in water, 2- to 4-ring PAHs were predominant in SPMs, and 2- to 5-ring PAHs were abundant in sediments. The spatial distribution of PAHs was site-specific and PAHs varied at different sampling locations. The diagnostic ratio analysis indicated that the PAHs mainly had a pyrolytic source. The ecological risk assessment showed that the ecosystem risk of PAHs was low in the Lanzhou reach of the Yellow River.

Concentrations and distribution of organochlorine pesticides in pine needles of typical regions in Northern Xinjiang

The residues of organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) in 29 pine needle samples of typical regions (including Shihezi, Beitun, and Kanas) in Northern Xinjiang was determined with a gas chromatograph equipped with an electron capture detector. Total OCPs concentrations in pine needles ranged from 2.94 to 186 ng/g dry weight, with a mean concentration of 39.63 ng/g. The results indicated that Beitun was the most polluted region while Kanas was the least polluted one. Hexachlorocyclohexanes (HCHs) and dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethanes (DDTs) were the predominant species in samples. Analysis of the sources of contamination showed that HCHs in the needles were derived from an old mixed source of technical HCHs or lindane. For DDTs, it was suspected to have recent application at some sites, which were derived mainly from a mixture of technical DDTs and dicofol containing DDT impurities. Categorical principal component analysis was performed in finding out more about the degradation behavior of DDTs and HCHs, which was identical with the results of source analysis.

Bioremediation of Atmospheric Hydrocarbons via Bacteria Naturally Associated with Leaves of Higher Plants

Bacteria associated with leaves of sixteen cultivated and wild plant species from all over Kuwait were analyzed by a culture-independent approach. This technique depended on partial sequencing of 16S rDNA regions in total genomic DNA from the bacterial consortia and comparing the resulting sequences with those in the GenBank database. To release bacterial cells from leaves, tough methods such as sonication co-released too much leaf chloroplasts whose DNA interfered with the bacterial DNA. A more satisfactory bacterial release with a minimum of chloroplast co-release was done by gently rubbing the leaf surfaces with soft tooth brushes in phosphate buffer. The leaves of all plant species harbored on their surfaces bacterial communities predominated by hydrocarbonoclastic (hydrocarbon-utilizing) bacterial genera. Leaves of 6 representative plants brought about in the laboratory effective removal of volatile hydrocarbons in sealed microcosms. Each individual plant species had a unique bacterial community structure. Collectively, the phyllospheric microflora on the studied plants comprised the genera Flavobacterium, Halomonas, Arthrobacter, Marinobacter, Neisseria, Ralstonia, Ochrobactrum. Exiguobacterium, Planomicrobium, Propionibacterium, Kocuria, Rhodococcus and Stenotrophomonas. This community structure was dramatically different from the structure we determined earlier for the same plants using the culture-dependent approach, although in both cases, hydrocarbonoclastic bacteria were frequent.

In situ determination mechanisms for the depuration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons adsorbed onto the leaf surfaces of living mangrove seedlings

To further increase understanding of the mechanisms responsible for air-surface exchange processes, the depuration of adsorbed individual fluorene (Flu), anthracene (Ant), phenanthrene (Phe), fluoranthene (Fla), and pyrene (Pyr) from the leaf surfaces of living Aegiceras corniculatum (Ac) and Kandelia obovata (Ko) seedlings were in situ investigated in real time using laser-induced nanosecond time-resolved fluorescence (LITRF) system. Depuration of the PAHs from the leaf surfaces of the two mangrove seedlings included a rapid and a slow phase, and both of them followed first-order kinetics. Furthermore, significant inter-species and inter-chemical variability existed in terms of the elimination rates and the remaining PAHs residues during the two phases. The rapid phase mainly represented a fast volatilization, of which the volatilization rates moderately correlate with PAH molecular weight, while combined effect of volatilization and photolysis was the dominant mechanism for the slow phase. The retainment of PAHs on the leaf surfaces was associated with the plant species and physicochemical properties of PAHs, especially logKOA.

Challenges in tracing the fate and effects of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon deposition in vascular plants

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are ubiquitous organic pollutants that raise environmental concerns because of their toxicity. Their accumulation in vascular plants conditions harmful consequences to human health because of their position in the food chain. Consequently, understanding how atmospheric PAHs are taken up in plant tissues is crucial for risk assessment. In this review we synthesize current knowledge about PAH atmospheric deposition, accumulation in both gymnosperms and angiosperms, mechanisms of transfer, and ecological and physiological effects. PAHs emitted in the atmosphere partition between gas and particulate phases and undergo atmospheric deposition on shoots and soil. Most PAH concentration data from vascular plant leaves suggest that contamination occurs by both direct (air-leaf) and indirect (air-soil-root) pathways. Experimental studies demonstrate that PAHs affect plant growth, interfering with plant carbon allocation and root symbioses. Photosynthesis remains the most studied physiological process affected by PAHs. Among scientific challenges, identifying specific physiological transfer mechanisms and improving the understanding of plant-symbiont interactions in relation to PAH pollution remain pivotal for both fundamental and applied environmental sciences.

Using testate amoeba as potential biointegrators of atmospheric deposition of phenanthrene (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon) on "moss/soil interface-testate amoeba community" microecosystems

Microecosystem models could allow understanding of the impacts of pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on ecosystem functioning. We studied the effects of atmospheric phenanthrene (PHE) deposition on the microecosystem "moss/soil interface-testate amoebae (TA) community" over a 1-month period under controlled conditions. We found that PHE had an impact on the microecosystem. PHE was accumulated by the moss/soil interface and was significantly negatively correlated (0.4 < r(2) < 0.7) with total TA abundance and the abundance of five species of TA (Arcella sp., Centropyxis sp., Nebela lageniformis, Nebela tincta and Phryganella sp.). Among sensitive species, species with a superior trophic level (determined by the test aperture size) were more sensitive than other TA species. This result suggests that links between microbial groups in the microecosystems are disrupted by PHE and that this pollutant had effects both direct (ingestion of the pollutant or direct contact with cell) and/or indirect (decrease of prey) on the TA community. The TA community seems to offer a potential integrative tool to understand mechanisms and processes by which the atmospheric PHE deposition affects the links between microbial communities.

Distribution of PAHs in tissues of wetland plants and the surrounding sediments in the Chongming wetland, Shanghai, China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) concentrations were determined in sediments and three types of wetland plants collected from the intertidal flats in the Chongming wetland. The concentration of total PAHs in sediments ranged from 38.7 to 136.2 ngg(-1). Surface sediment concentrations were higher in regions with plant cover than in bare regions. Rhizome-layer sediments (56.8-102.4 ngg(-1)) contained less PAHs than surface sediments (0-5 cm). Concentrations of PAHs in plant tissues ranged from 51.9 to 181.2 ngg(-1), with highest concentrations in the leaves of Scirpus. Most of the PAHs in the leaves and other plant tissues were low molecular weight compounds (LMW, 2-4 rings), and a similar distribution pattern of PAHs in different types of plants was also observed. Source analysis indicated that plants and sediments both came from pyrogenic sources, but plants had additional petroleum contamination. The low ratio of benzo[a]anthracene over chrysene suggests that the wetland PAHs came mainly from long-distance atmospheric transportation. Significant bioaccumulation of PAHs from the sediments into plants was not observed for high molecular weight PAHs (HMW, 5-6 rings) in Chongming wetland. The small RCFs (root concentration factor from sediments) for HMW PAHs and large RCFs for LMW PAHs suggested that roots accumulated LMW PAHs selectively from sediments in Chongming wetland.

Sorption of chlorophenols onto fruit cuticles and potato periderm

To better understand the interaction mechanisms of plant surfaces with polar organic compounds, sorption of 4-chlorophenol, 2,4-dichlorophenol, and 2,4,6-trichlorophenol by fruit cuticles (i.e., tomato, apple, and pepper), and potato tuber periderm were investigated. The roles of cuticular components (waxes, cutin, cutan and sugar) on sorption of chlorophenols are quantitatively compared. Cutin and waxes govern the sorption capacity of bulk apple cuticle by hydrophobic interactions. Potato periderm with highest sugar content exhibits the lowest sorption capability for the chlorophenols. With the increase of hydrophobicity (i.e., Kow ) of sorbate, the relative contribution of lipophilic components (wax, cutin and cutan) on total sorption increases, however, the ratios of Koc to Kow decreases due to increasing ionization degree of sorbates.

Dechlorane Plus (DP) in air and plants at an electronic waste (e-waste) site in South China

Air and foliage samples (Eucalyptus spp. and Pinus massoniana Lamb.) were collected from e-waste and reference sites in South China and analyzed for Dechlorane Plus (DP) and two dechlorinated DPs. DP concentrations in the air were 13.1-1794 pg/m3 for the e-waste site and 0.47-35.7 pg/m3 for the reference site, suggesting the recycling of e-waste is an important source of DP to the environment. Plant DP, with concentrations of 0.45-51.9 ng/g dry weight at the e-waste site and 0.09-2.46 ng/g at the reference site, exhibited temporal patterns similar to the air DP except for pine needle at the reference site. The air-plant exchange of DP could be described with the two-compartment model. Anti-Cl11 DP was measured in most air and plant samples from the e-waste site. The ratios of anti-Cl11 DP to anti-DP in the air and plants may indicate the preferential uptake of dechlorinated DP by plant compared with DP.

Diffusion and accumulation in cultivated vegetable plants of di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) from a plastic production factory

Di-(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP) concentrations in the atmosphere and in four vegetable crops including Brassica chinensis L. (bok choy), Brassica campestris L. (field mustard), Vigna unguiculata Walp. (cowpea), and Solanum melongena L. (eggplant) cultivated on land surrounding a plastic production factory were determined. The air DEHP concentrations (means) at the sites 0.2, 0.4, 0.8, and 1.6 km away from the plastic production building were about 9.4-12.8, 5.8-9.6, 1.6-5.0, and 0.04-0.27 microg m(-3) dry weight (DW), respectively. Wind direction is a key factor influencing the measurable DEHP concentration of the air, which was highest in the downwind direction and lowest in the upwind direction, and thus the vegetables accumulated the highest DEHP contents in the downwind direction and the lowest quantities in the upwind direction. The highest DEHP accumulations content of bok choy, field mustard, eggplant, and cowpea were 52.0 +/- 3.1, 43.1 +/- 2.2, 36.2 +/- 2.8, and 19.4 +/- 0.47 mg kg(-1) DW, respectively. Safety estimation on the basis of the daily intake limit referenced by the US Environmental Protection Agency (USEPA) led to the conclusion that eating vegetables cultivated 0.2 km away from the plastic production building is not a food safety problem under normal conditions. A strong positive linear correlation between atmospheric DEHP concentration and DEHP content of the vegetable crops was found. The limits for air DEHP concentration for safe vegetable cultivation are 24.0, 34.8, 40.8, and 82.8 microg m(-3) for bok choy, field mustard, cowpea, and eggplant, respectively, by calculating from the equation of linear regression between air DEHP concentration and vegetable DEHP content.

Diversity and activity of PAH-degrading bacteria in the phyllosphere of ornamental plants

Phyllosphere bacteria on ornamental plants were characterized based on their diversity and activity towards the removal of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), the major air pollutants in urban area. The amounts of PAH-degrading bacteria were about 1-10% of the total heterotrophic phyllosphere populations and consisted of diverse bacterial species such as Acinetobacter, Pseudomonas, Pseudoxanthomonas, Mycobacterium, and uncultured bacteria. Bacterial community structures analyzed by polymerase chain reaction-denaturing gradient gel electrophoresis from each plant species showed distinct band patterns. The uniqueness of these phyllosphere bacterial communities was partly due to the variation in leaf morphology and chemical properties of ornamental plants. The PAH degradation activity of these bacteria was monitored in gas-tight systems containing sterilized or unsterilized leaves. The results indicated that phyllosphere bacteria on unsterilized leaves were able to enhance the activity of leaves for phenanthrene removal. When compared between plant species, phenanthrene removal efficiency corresponded to the size of phenanthrene-degrading bacteria. In addition, phyllosphere bacteria on Wrightia religiosa were able to reduce other PAHs such as acenaphthylene, acenaphthene, and fluorine in 60-ml glass vials and in a 14-l glass chamber. Thus, phyllosphere bacteria on ornamental plants may play an important role in natural attenuation of airborne PAHs in urban areas.

Surfactant effects on the affinity of plant cuticles with organic pollutants

To precisely predict organics accumulation and crop safety, the affinity of fruit cuticles for naphthalene and 1-naphthol was investigated with the presence of three surfactants below and above the critical micelle concentration (CMC), including anionic sodium dodecylbenzene sulfonate (SDBS), cationic cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTMAB), and nonionic polyoxyethylene (20) sorbitan monolaurate (Tween 20). Tomato and apple cuticles with distinct compositions were selected. With increasing SDBS concentrations, apparent sorption coefficients (K(d)*) of 1-naphthol by both cuticles first increased a bit and then decreased slightly. The K(d)* of naphthalene by tomato cuticle is sensitive to SDBS concentration with a sharp increase and then decrease, whereas SDBS has little effect on naphthalene K(d)* by apple cuticle. For CTMAB with lower CMC, the naphthalene K(d)* decreased more quickly. Tween 20 seems to be ineffective on naphthalene sorption by both cuticles. Nevertheless, the intrinsic sorption coefficients (K(d)) were almost promoted by the coexisting surfactants, resulting from the cuticle-sorbed surfactant's plasticizing effect.

Phenanthrene sorption by fruit cuticles and potato periderm with different compositional characteristics

Phenanthrene sorption by fruit cuticles (tomato, apple, and grape), potato tuber periderm, and their fractions were investigated to elucidate effects of compositional characteristics on affinity of plant cuticle (above-ground) and periderm (below-ground) with hydrophobic organic contaminants (HOCs). The distinct roles of the extractable lipids (waxes), the depolymerizable lipids (cutin/suberin), the nonsaponifiable lipids (cutan/suberan) and polysaccharide are discussed. The cutin/suberin rather than waxes dominates the sorption properties of bulk cuticle/periderm, but the sorption coefficient (K(d)) is linearly correlated with the total lipid contents. Polysaccharide plays a negative role in HOC sorption due to its obviously poor affinity with HOCs and restriction effect on the other powerful sorptive regions in cuticle/periderm. The significantly lower sorption of periderm than cuticle is attributed to the former having higher polysaccharide and lower depolymerizable lipids. The linear correlation of K(d) of bulk cuticle/periderm with polysaccharide content is observed for a potential prediction of plant uptake.
