Toxic metals in rice among Asian countries: A review of occurrence and potential human health risks

Heavy metals such as cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) pose significant health risks, particularly in Asia, where rice is a staple for nearly three billion people. Despite their known dangers and environmental prevalence, studies addressing their concentrations in rice across different regions and the associated health implications remain insufficient. This review systematically examines the occurrence and impact of these toxic elements, filling a critical gap in the literature. Data from seven countries indicate mean concentrations in the order of Pb > As>Cd, with values of 0.255 ± 0.013, 0.236 ± 0.317, and 0.136 ± 0.150 mg/kg, respectively. Uncertainty analysis shows extensive variability, especially for Cd, with a 95% confidence interval range from 0.220 to 0.992 mg/kg. The typical daily intake of heavy metals through rice consumption, in the order of As>Cd > Pb, frequently exceeds safe limits. Generally, data obtained from various studies showed that children were more prone to heavy metal contamination through rice consumption than adults. This review is fundamental for ongoing monitoring, future research, and management strategies to reduce heavy metal contamination in rice.

Source to risk receptor transport and spatial hotspots of heavy metals pollution in peri-urban agricultural soils of the largest megacity in China

The traditional concentration-based health risk assessment of heavy metal (HMs) pollution in soil has often overlooked the initial loading and toxicity differences of HMs from various sources. This oversight hinders effective identification of the risky source, complicating precise risk management of soil HMs pollution. This study applied a source-oriented health risk assessment framework that integrates source profiling, exposure risk assessment, and spatial cluster analysis. Taking the Shanghai City, the largest megacity in China as a case, the findings revealed that overall environmental quality of peri-urban agricultural soil in Shanghai remains good, though 3.03 % of Cd concentrations exceeded the national reference standards. Industrial & traffic activities, primarily contributing Hg, Cd, and Pb, accounted for the highest proportion (44.3 %) of total metal concentrations and posed the greatest non-cancer risk (54.6 % for children and 53.1 % for adults). Notably, natural activities, mainly contributing Cr, ranked only third in concentration contribution (26.55 %) but induced the highest cancer risk (58.55 % for children and 57.08 % for adults). These findings suggest that sources with lower concentration contributions may still pose significant health risk. Integrating source apportionment with health risk assessment can more precisely identify the risky source and target areas for mitigating the human health hazards.

High lead contamination in Mother's breastmilk in Bihar (India): Health risk assessment of the feeding children

Lead poisoning in the recent times has caused serious health threats in the exposed human population. It is estimated that about 815 million people are exposed to lead poisoning worldwide and in India total 275 million children are exposed to blood lead contamination. The present study was carried outed in 6 districts of Bihar to know the extent of lead exposure in the children through their mother's breastmilk. The biological samples such as breastmilk, mother's urine, child's urine, and mother's blood samples were collected for quantitative lead estimation. Moreover, the selected household water sources (handpump) and the food consumed by the individuals-wheat, rice and potato samples were also collected for lead quantification. The study reveals that the breastmilk had high lead content in 92% of the samples (highest value 1309 μg/L), in blood presence of lead was observed in 87% studied samples (highest value 677.2 μg/L). In mother's urine the highest lead value was 4168 μg/L (62%) and in child's urine the highest value was 875.4 μg/L (62%) respectively of the studied samples. Moreover, in the studied food samples, wheat had lead content in 45% the studied samples (highest value 7910 μg/kg). In rice in 40% of the studied samples (highest value 6972 μg/kg) and in potato 90% of the studied samples (highest value = 13786 μg/kg) were found with elevated lead content respectively. The hazard quotient (HQ) and the cancer risk (CR) for lead contamination was very much higher in mothers followed by their children. The entire study indicated that lead exposure through food (wheat, rice and potato) has reached the mother's breastmilk and from their it has reached their child's body. This could cause serious hazards in the exposed children causing serious neurological damages, low IQ, low memory, and low mental growth in them. Therefore, a strategic action is required to control the present problem.

To breathe or not to breathe: Inhalational exposure to heavy metals and related health risk

This study reviewed scientific literature on inhalation exposure to heavy metals (HMs) in various indoor and outdoor environments and related carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk. A systematic search in Web of Science, Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and Medline databases yielded 712 results and 43 articles met the requirements of the Population, Exposure, Comparator, and Outcomes (PECO) criteria. Results revealed that HM concentrations in most households exceeded the World Health Organization (WHO) guideline values, indicating moderate pollution and dominant anthropogenic emission sources of HMs. In the analyzed schools, universities, and offices low to moderate levels of air pollution with HMs were revealed, while in commercial environments high levels of air pollution were stated. The non-carcinogenic risk due to inhalation HM exposure exceeded the acceptable level of 1 in households, cafes, hospitals, restaurants, and metros. The carcinogenic risk for As and Cr in households, for Cd, Cr, Ni, As, and Co in educational environments, for Pb, Cd, Cr, and Co in offices and commercial environments, and for Ni in metros exceeded the acceptable level of 1 × 10-4. Carcinogenic risk was revealed to be higher indoors than outdoors. This review advocates for fast and effective actions to reduce HM exposure for safer breathing.

Major influencing factors identification and probabilistic health risk assessment of soil potentially toxic elements pollution in coal and metal mines across China: A systematic review

Deposition of potentially toxic elements (PTEs) in soils due to different types of mining activities has been an increasingly important concern worldwide. Quantitative differences of soil PTEs contamination and related health risk among typical mines remain unclear. Herein, data from 110 coal mines and 168 metal mines across China were analyzed based on 265 published literatures to evaluate pollution characteristics, spatial distribution, and probabilistic health risks of soil PTEs. The results showed that PTE levels in soil from both mine types significantly exceeded background values. The geoaccumulation index (Igeo) revealed metal-mine soil pollution levels exceeded those of coal mines, with average Igeo values for Cd, Hg, As, Pb, Cu, and Zn being 3.02-15.60 times higher. Spearman correlation and redundancy analysis identified natural and anthropogenic factors affecting soil PTE contamination in both mine types. Mining activities posed a significant carcinogenic risk, with metal-mine soils showing a total carcinogenic risk an order of magnitude higher than in coal-mine soils. This study provides policymakers a quantitative foundation for developing differentiated strategies for sustainable remediation and risk-based management of PTEs in typical mining soils.

The mediating role of accelerated biological aging in the association between blood metals and cognitive function

Aging is a key risk factor in cognitive diseases. Recently, metal exposures were found associated with both biological aging and cognitive function. Here, we aim to evaluate the associations of blood metals with cognitive function and the mediated effect of biological aging. Fourteen metals were detected and biological age was calculated through Klemera and Doubal method among 514 adults in Beijing, China. The generalized linear models indicated that the copper (Cu), molybdenum (Mo), and strontium (Sr) were positively associated with biological aging [βCu (95% CI): 12.76 (9.26, 16.27); βMo (95% CI): 1.50 (0.15, 2.85)], and βSr (95% CI): 1.86 (0.68, 3.03)], while vanadium (V) was inversely related to biological aging [βV (95% CI): -0.76 (-1.48, -0.05)]. Subsequently, Cu, lead (Pb), selenium (Se), and biological aging were associated with cognitive function and further mediation analyses confirmed that biological aging partially mediated (33.98%, P = 0.019) the association of Cu and cognitive function. Additionally, we constructed a lifestyle index that implied the modifiable healthy lifestyle could slow aging to attenuate the detrimental effect of metals on cognition. Our findings provide insights into the potential pathways linking multiple metals exposure to aging and cognition and underscore the importance of adopting healthy lifestyles.

Evaluating the Contamination by Indoor Dust in Dubai

Nowadays, people spend most of their time indoors. Despite constantly cleaning these spaces, dust apparition cannot be avoided. Since dust can contain chemical elements that negatively impact people's health, we propose the analysis of the metals from the indoor dust component collected in different locations in Dubai, UAE. Multivariate statistics (correlation matrix, clustering) and quality indicators (QI)-Igeo, PI, EF, PLI, Nemerow-were used to assess the contamination level with different metals in the dust. We proposed two new QIs (CPI and AQI) and compared the results with those provided by the most used indices-PLI and Nemerow. It is shown that high concentrations of some elements (Ca in this case) can significantly increase the values of the Nemerow index, CPI, and AQI. In contrast, the existence of low concentrations leads to the decrement of the PLI.

Metallomics analysis of metal exposure and cognitive function in older adults: A combined epidemiological and bioinformatics study

Dementia is a significant cause of elderly disability and Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the most prevalent form of dementia. As an early stage of AD, the mechanism related to mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and heavy metals is still unclear. This study utilized a cross-sectional design and enrolled 514 older adults in Bejing, China. Cognitive function was assessed by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and fourteen blood metals were measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). In the adjusted single-metal models, we observed that copper [Cu, β (95% CI): 3.73 (-6.42, -1.03)] and lead [Pb, β (95% CI): 0.79 (-1.26, -0.32)] demonstrated negative associations with cognitive function, while selenium [Se, β (95% CI): 2.97 (1.23, 4.70)] was beneficial to cognition. Our findings were robust in secondary analysis using multi-metal models, which included generalized linear models (GLM), Bayesian kernel machine regression (BKMR), and quantile g-computation (qgcomp). Moreover, the toxic metal mixture (Cu and Pb) exhibited a significant negative association with MMSE scores and the inclusion of Se in the metal mixture attenuated the neurotoxicity of Cu-Pb mixture. The in silico analysis was used to examine the potential molecular mechanisms (genes, biological processes, pathways, and illnesses) of interaction among metal mixtures. We identified 20 cognition-related genes that are associated with both Cu-Pb and Se. Among these genes, eight (APOE, APP, BAX, BDNF, CASP3, HMOX1, TF, and TPP1) exhibited opposite effects on protein activity, mRNA expression, or protein expression in response to Se and Cu/Pb exposure, which could be the key genes accounting for the anti-neurotoxic effects of Se. Our findings support that Se can attenuate the neurotoxicity of exposure to single Cu or Pb, and Cu-Pb mixture. More research is needed to confirm our findings and gain knowledge about the molecular mechanisms of combined metal exposure on cognitive function.

Health risk assessment of trace metal(loid)s in agricultural soil using an integrated model combining soil-related and plants-accumulation exposures: A case study on Hainan Island, South China

Traditional health risk assessment of trace metal(loid)s (TMs) in agricultural soil exclusively considers direct soil-related exposure and may underestimate the health risks they pose. In this study, the health risks of TMs were evaluated using an integrated model that combined soil-related and plant-accumulating exposures. A detailed investigation of common TMs (Cr, Pb, Cd, As, and Hg) coupled with probability risk analysis based on a Monte Carlo simulation was conducted on Hainan Island. Our results showed that, except for As, the non-carcinogenic risk (HI) and carcinogenic risk (CR) of the TMs were all within the acceptable ranges (HI < 1.0, and CR < 1E-06) for direct soil-related exposure to bio-accessible fractions and indirect exposure via plant accumulation (CR substantially lower than the warning threshold 1E-04). We identified crop food ingestion as the essential pathway for TM exposure and As as the critical toxic element in terms of risk control. Moreover, we determined that RfDo and SFo are the most suitable parameters for assessing As health risk severity. Our study demonstrated that the proposed integrated model combining soil-related and plant-accumulating exposures can avoid major health risk assessment deviations. The results obtained and the integrated model proposed in this study can facilitate future multi-pathway exposure research and could be the basis for determining agricultural soil quality criteria in tropical areas.

Environmental risk assessment near a typical spent lead-acid battery recycling factory in China

In recent years, environmental pollution and public health incidents caused by the recycling of spent lead-acid batteries (LABs) has becoming more frequent, posing potential risk to both the ecological environment and human health. Accurately assessing the environmental risk associated with the recycling of spent LABs is a prerequisite for achieving pollution control. In this study, a spent LABs recycling factory in Chongqing was investigated through on-site investigation, sample analysis. Exposure assessment and health risk assessment were also conducted. The results showed that: firstly, Pb and As concentrations exceeding the standard limit values were found in the environmental air and vegetables near the spent LABs recycling factory. Secondly, exposure assessment results showed that total average daily exposure to hazardous substances for children (3.46 × 10-2 mg/kg) is higher than for adults (4.80 × 10-2 mg/kg). The main exposure pathways for Pb, Cr, Ni, Cu, Zn, and Hg are ingestion of vegetables, while those for Cd, As, and Sb are through inhalation. Thirdly, health risk assessment results indicate that environmental exposure poses unacceptable non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk to both adults and children near the spent LABs recycling factory, with children facing higher risk than adults. Pb and As are the main contributors to non-carcinogenic risk, and Ni and As are the main contributors to unacceptable carcinogenic risk. In particular, As, has a greater contribution to total carcinogenic risk index through inhalation than vegetable ingestion. Overall, vegetable ingestion and inhalation are the main exposure pathways for non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk. Consequently, future risk assessment should focus on the impact of hazardous substances on children, as well as the health risk associated with ingestion of vegetables and inhalation. Our findings will provide basic information for proposing measures of environmental risk prevention during the recycling of spent LABs, for example, controlling of As in exhaust gas emissions.

Enrichment of cadmium and selenium in soil-crop system and associated probabilistic health risks in black shale areas

Selenium (Se) is the essential component of selenoenzymes and contributes to antioxidant defenses. The capability of Se to antagonize the toxicity of heavy metals makes it an essential trace element for human and plant health. Soils derived from black shales are naturally enriched with Se; however, these soils often contain high geological cadmium (Cd), due to the weathering of black shales rich in Cd and Se. Cadmium, as a known Group I carcinogen, could induce damage to various organs. This therefore poses a major challenge for safe cultivation of Se-rich land resources. In this study, a total of 247 paired soil-crop samples were collected from a typical farmland derived from black shales. The concentrations of Cd and Se in the samples were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy and atomic fluorescence spectrometry. Monte Carlo simulation was applied to evaluate potential health risks associated with Cd exposure. Cadmium was the critical pollutant in the study area, with the average value of 1.53 mg/kg. Moreover, both children and adults living in the area had a significant non-carcinogenic health risk. Additional health risk assessments revealed that diet was the main contributor for both children and adults among the four pathways (diet > soil ingestion > soil dermal adsorption > soil inhalation). Furthermore, our results revealed that leguminous vegetables and maize were ideal for this site due to their high Se and low Cd accumulation abilities. These findings provide support for adjusting planting structure by variety screening to mitigate the health risk induced by Cd.

Effect of vermiculite modified with nano-iron-based material on stabilization of lead in lead contaminated soil

Lead (Pb) contamination arising from the production of lead-acid batteries is getting more severe, and research on its treatment technology reflects the increasing concern worldwide. Vermiculite is a mineral with a layered structure, containing hydrated magnesium aluminosilicate and has high porosity and large specific surface area. Vermiculite has the ability of improving soil permeability and water retention performance. However, in recent studies, vermiculite is shown to be less effective than other stabilizing agents in immobilizing heavy metal Pb. Nano-iron-based materials have been widely used to adsorb heavy metals in wastewater. Therefore, vermiculite has been modified with two nano-iron-based materials-nanoscale zero-valent iron (nZVI) and nano-Fe3O4 (nFe3O4) to improve its immobilization effect for the heavy metal lead. SEM and XRD analysis confirmed that nZVI and nFe3O4 were successfully loaded on the raw vermiculite. XPS analysis was applied to further understand the composition of VC@nZVI and VC@nFe3O4. The stability and mobility of nano-iron-based materials were improved after being loaded on raw vermiculite, and the Pb immobilization effect of modified vermiculite on Pb-contaminated soil was evaluated. Adding nZVI-modified vermiculite (VC@nZVI) and nFe3O4-modified vermiculite (VC@nFe3O4) increased the immobilization effect and decreased the bioavailability of Pb. Compared with raw vermiculite, adding VC@nZVI and VC@nFe3O4 increased the amount of exchangeable Pb by 30.8% and 6.17%. After leaching ten times in soil column leaching experiments, the total concentration of Pb in the leachate of the soil with VC@nZVI and VC@nFe3O4 were reduced by 40.67% and 11.47%, compared with raw vermiculite. These results prove that the modification with nano-iron-based materials enhances the immobilization effect of vermiculite, in which the effect of VC@nZVI is significantly better than VC@nFe3O4. Vermiculite was modified with nano-iron-based materials, resulting in a better fixing effect of the modified curing agent. This study provides a new approach for the remediation of Pb-contaminated soil, but further research is needed for soil recovery and utilization of nanomaterials.

Does elevated CO2 enhance the arsenic uptake by rice? Yes or maybe: Evidences from FACE experiments

Elevated CO₂ (eCO₂) strongly affects rice yield and quality in arsenic (As) paddy soils. However, understanding of the As accumulation in rice under coupled stress of eCO₂ and soil As is still limited while data are scarce. It greatly limits the prediction for future rice safety. This study investigated the As uptake by rice grown in different As paddy soils under two CO₂ conditions (ambient and ambient +200 μmol mol^-1) in the free-air CO₂ enrichment (FACE) system. Results showed that eCO₂ lowered soil Eh at the tillering stage and caused higher concentrations of dissolved As and Fe²⁺ in soil pore water. Compared with the control, the increased As transfer abilities in rice straws under eCO₂ contributed to the higher As accumulation in rice grains, and their total As concentrations were increased by 10.3-31.2%. Besides, the increased amounts of iron plaque (IP) under eCO₂ failed to effectively inhibit the As uptake by rice due to the difference in critical stage between As immobilized by IP (mainly in maturing stage) and uptake by rice roots (about 50% contribution before filling stage). Risk assessments suggest that eCO₂ enhanced the human health risks of As intake from rice grains produced in low-As paddy soils (<30 mg kg^-1). In order to alleviate the As threats to rice under eCO₂, we consider that proper soil drainage before filling stage to improve soil Eh can serve as an effective way to reduce As uptake by rice. Pursuing appropriate rice varieties to reduce the As transfer ability may be the other positive strategy.

Health risk assessment of inorganic and organic constituents of the coarse and fine PM in an industrialized region of Brazil

A health risk assessment of inorganic and organic species associated with coarse and fine particulate matter (PM) was conducted in Southeastern Brazil. TSP, PM₁₀, and PM_2.5 samples were collected, and their elemental (metals/metalloids) and organic (PAHs) composition were determined by EDXRF and GC-MS. The health risks were determined through hazard quotient (HQ) and cancer risk (CR). It was found that different elements and routes of exposure lead to different health risks, even for the PM concentration in compliance with air quality standards. The major routes of exposure for adults were inhalation and dermal contact whereas for children were ingestion and dermal contact. High non-cancer risks (HQ) caused by Cl and Fe exposure were associated with coarser fractions, PM₁₀ and TSP, respectively, whereas high HQ for Se, Sb, and V exposure were associated with PM_2.5. HQ values for children were near twice that for adults, and CR values were 65 % to 130 % higher for children than for adults. CR posed by PAHs was negligible. The results highlighted that the HQ might be over- or underestimated depending on the form in which the element Cl is determined (elemental or ion), reinforcing the need for an embracing chemical characterization of the PM. High HQ values were found related to the exposure to some elements present in the TSP, showing that this PM fraction should not be neglected.

Sentinel animals for monitoring the environmental lead exposure: combination of traditional review and visualization analysis

In nature, certain animals share a common living environment with humans, thus these animals have become biomonitors of health effects related to various environmental exposures. As one of the most toxic environmental chemicals, lead (Pb) can cause detriment health effects to animals, plants, and even humans through different exposure pathways such as atmosphere, soil, food, water, and dust, etc. Sentinel animals played an "indicative" role in the researches of environmental pollution monitoring and human health. In order to comprehend the usage of sentinel animals in the indication of environmental Pb pollution and human Pb exposure completely, a combination of traditional review and visualization analysis based on CiteSpace literature was used to review earlier researches in this study. In the first instance, present researches on exposure sources and exposure pathways of Pb were summarized briefly, and then the studies using sentinel animals to monitor environmental heavy metal pollution and human health were combed. Finally, visualization software CiteSpace 5.8.R3 was used to explore and analyze the hotspots and frontiers of lead exposure and sentinel animals researches at home and abroad. The results showed that certain mammals were good indicators for human lead exposure. Sentinel animals had been widely used to monitor the ecological environment and human lead exposure. Among them, the blood lead levels of small mammals, particularly for domestic dogs and cats, had a significant correlation with the blood lead levels of human living in the same environment. It indicated that certain biological indicators in animals can be used as surrogates to monitor human body exposure to heavy metals. This study also explored the challenges and perspectives that may be faced in sentinel animal research, in order to provide a certain theoretical basis and train of thought guidance for future research.

Source-oriented probabilistic health risk assessment of soil potentially toxic elements in a typical mining city

Identifying potential sources of soil potentially toxic elements (PTEs) and developing source-oriented health risk assessments in typical mining cities are key for pollution prevention and risk management. To this end, a case study was conducted to explore the pollution characteristics, potential sources, and human health risks of PTEs in Daye City, China. Indices, including the pollution factor (PF), pollution load index (PLI), and geo-accumulation index (I_geo), were applied to assess PTE pollution. Cd had the highest value among the detected PTEs, and 82.93% of the sampling sites had moderate pollution levels, with the highest mean I_geo value for Cd (2.30). Four potential sources were determined. Cr and Ni originated mainly from natural sources. Zn (91.5%) was exclusively and then Cd (33.1%) was moderately derived from industrial activities. The mixed source of various mineral exploitation smelting, and coal-fired traffic emissions leaded to the accumulation of As, Cd, and Pb. Cu was associated with Cu-related mining and smelting activities. The probabilistic health risk assessment indicated that the non-carcinogenic risks for populations were negligible. Overall, this work provides scientific information for environmental managers to manage soil PTE pollution through the effective management of anthropogenic sources with limited resources and costs.

Heavy metal(loid)s in agricultural soil from main grain production regions of China: Bioaccessibility and health risks to humans

Unintentional ingestion of metal-contaminated soils may pose a great threat to human health. To accurately evaluate the health risks of heavy metal(loid)s in soils, their bioaccessibility has been widely determined by in vitro assays and increasingly employed to optimize the assessment parameters. Given that, using meta-analysis, we analyzed the literature on farmland heavy metal(loid)s (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Pb, Ni, and Zn) in Chinese main grain production regions, and collected their total and bioaccessibility data to accurately assess their human health risks. Monte Carlo simulation was used to reduce the uncertainty in metal concentration, intake rate, toxicity coefficient, and body weight. We found that the mean concentration (0.47 mg/kg) and geological accumulation index (I_geo, 0-5.24) of Cd were the priority position of controlling metals. Moreover, children are more vulnerable to carcinogenic risks than adults. Soil mineralogy, physicochemical properties, Fe, and the types of in vitro assays are the influencing factors of bioaccessibility discrepancy. Furthermore, appropriate bioaccessibility determination methods can be adapted according to the differences in ecological receptors for the risk assessment, like developing a "personalized assessment" scheme for polluted farmland soil management. Collectively, bioaccessibility-based models may provide an accurate and effective approach to human health risk assessment.

Study on the Interaction Effect between the Intensity of Government Low-Carbon Subsidies and the Growth Ability of Green and Low-Carbon Emerging Enterprises

With the development of science and technology and society, people's demand for a healthy living environment is increasing, and the expression "low carbon" has become a daily feature of people's lives. The emergence of a low-carbon economy, the impact on the traditional industrial structure and the formation of a new economic landscape make China, a developing country, eager to seize this opportunity to enhance its international competitiveness. To achieve this, it is necessary to establish a low-carbon concept, to actively restructure industrial and develop low-carbon industries; only in this way can we take advantage of the new round of industrial restructuring and grasp the initiative of development. Therefore, this paper selects data from enterprises in the emerging low-carbon industry, and uses a SVAR model to conduct a dynamic interaction analysis between government subsidy intensity, enterprise profitability, asset growth capacity and enterprise size. The results of the study show that the intensity of government subsidies in the first period has a certain positive effect on a company's current profitability and asset growth, the improvement being most significant on its profitability. Among the larger companies, asset growth and profitability in the first period had a significant positive impact on current earnings, and the contribution of profitability to the company's own performance was much larger than the average; among the smaller companies, asset growth and profitability in the first period had a significant positive impact on current earnings, and the contribution of asset growth to the company's own performance was much larger than the average. The intensity of prior government subsidies in the Highs group has a significant positive relationship with the intensity of current government subsidies, the firm's asset growth capacity and profitability; the intensity of prior government subsidies in the Lows group only has a significant positive impact on the asset growth capacity in the current period. In addition, the interaction between the three core variables in the Highs group is also significantly higher than that in the Lows group. This indicates that the government should implement differential policies and financial subsidies according to the actual needs of enterprises to maximize the effect of capital use and promote the development and growth of emerging enterprises.

Sources and health risks of heavy metals in soils and vegetables from intensive human intervention areas in South China

Heavy metal pollution greatly harms the soil environment and poses threats to food safety and human health. This study aimed to quantify and analyze the sources of heavy metals and assess the health risks associated with the human intake of contaminated vegetables in South China. Heavy metals (Cd, As, Hg, Cu, Ni, Pb, Zn, and Cr) in soil and vegetables (leaf vegetables, legume vegetables, and cucurbits) were investigated and evaluated for contamination. By combining the correlation analysis (CA), positive matrix factorization (PMF), and GeoDetector model, source apportionments were comprehensively identified. Results showed that Cd was the predominant element in soils throughout the study area. Industrial (28.36 %, 20.24 %, 31.50 %), agricultural (27.19 %, 46.50 %, 27.30 %), besides traffic, atmospheric deposition and natural sources were identified as the dominant sources of heavy metals in GD01, GD02, and GD03, respectively. The human health risk assessment showed that the total non-cancer risk of heavy metals (i.e., Cr, Ni, As, Cd, and Pb) ingested through vegetables was 2.3E+00 for children and 9.67E-01 for adults, and the total cancer risk for children was 2.54E-02 and 1.07E-02 for adults, both of which exceeded acceptable levels. It is worth noting that children are more susceptible to health risks due to the consumption of contaminated vegetables than adults.

Risk assessment of metal(loid)s in tea from seven producing provinces in China

To evaluate metal(loid) contamination in tea leaves and assess health risks of tea drinking in China, metal(loid) concentrations in tea leaves from major tea-producing provinces were determined. Nine metal(loid)s (Al, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, As, Cd and Pb) were measured in a total of 217 tea samples representing five tea varieties (black tea, dark tea, green tea, oolong tea and white tea) from seven major tea-producing provinces of China (Fujian, Guangdong, Henan, Hunan, Jiangsu, Yunnan and Zhejiang). The results indicated that tea samples from Hunan Province had the highest metal(loid) concentrations, likely due its high prevalence of heavy industrial activities and soil pollution. The concentrations of As and Pb in dark tea were markedly higher than those in other tea varieties. A strong Spearman correlation coefficient (0.78, P < 0.001) of As and Pb in all the tea varieties has also been found, indicating their similar sources. Human health risk assessment for the nine analyzed metal(loid)s indicated that co-exposure to these metal(loids) may not cause significant health risks (hazard index [HI] > 1 suggests considerable health risks). Among the five tea varieties, metal(loids)s in dark and green tea induced relatively higher health risks, with 90th percentile HI values approached 0.8. Co (53.6 %-84.5 %) and Al (3.33 %-15.8 %) made the highest contributions to the HI of the selected tea commodities. Thus, public and regulatory agencies should reduce excessive Co and Al accumulation in these tea varieties during cultivation and production processes.

Towards an integrated health risk assessment framework of soil heavy metals pollution: Theoretical basis, conceptual model, and perspectives

The health risk of soil heavy metals pollution has been gaining increasing public concern. However, many countries have not set their own health risk assessment (HRA) framework and most of the existing studies directly referred to the USEPA risk assessment model and parameters. For those countries that do not propose an original HRA framework, the experience of developed countries is crucial for advancing their own HRA system. This study systematically reviewed the development of HRA framework in some representative developed countries. The theoretical basis, conceptual model, progress, and challenges of HRA researches concerning soil heavy metals pollution were summarized. By recalling and comparing the health risk-related laws and guidance in the USA, UK, and Japan, results showed that the construction of HRA framework varied between these countries, but HRA has become the main method for deriving their soil environmental criteria. We further summarized the evaluation scales, land use types, exposure pathways, and sensitive receptors of HRA studies, and highlighted the key parameters affecting health risk outputs. There has been a shift toward the incorporation of probabilistic modeling, metals bioavailability, and sources emission characteristics into recent HRA studies. Nonetheless, challenges remained on how to minimize the uncertainty of generating probability distribution and detecting metal bioavailability. To facilitate the development of HRA framework, it was advised that developing countries should strengthen the theoretical researches of health risk and localization researches of exposure factors. Future directions are suggested to tend to: 1) promote sensitive analysis to quantify the impact of distribution assumptions on health risk outputs, 2) derive reasonable risk threshold and consistent evaluation protocol for bioavailability-based health risk assessment method, and 3) strive to explore the combined health effect of exposure to heavy metals in soil through source-media-receptor integrated studies.

Assessment of house dust trace elements and human exposure in Ankara, Turkey

One of the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic is leading people remain at homes longer than ever. Considering the elongation of the time people spend indoors, the potential health risks caused by contaminants including heavy metals in indoor environments have become even more critical. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the levels and sources of heavy metals in indoor dust, to assess the exposure to heavy metals via indoor dust, and to estimate the associated health risk. The highest median value was measured for Zn (263 μg g^-1), while the lowest median concentration value was observed for Cd (0.348 μg g^-1). The levels of elements measured in the current study were found to be within the ranges reported in the other parts of the world, mostly close to the lower end of the range. House characteristics such as proximity to the main street, presence of pets, number of occupants, and age of the building were the house characteristics influencing the observed higher concentrations of certain heavy metals in houses. Enrichment factor values range between 1.79 (Cr) and 20.4 (Zn) with an average EF value of 8.80 ± 6.80 representing that the targeted elements are enriched (EF>2) in indoor dust in Ankara. Positive matrix factorization results showed that the heavy metals in the house dust in the study area are mainly contributed from sources namely outdoor dust, carpets/furniture, solders, wall paint/coal combustion, and cigarette smoke. Carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risk values from heavy metals did not exceed the safe limits recommended by EPA. The highest carcinogenic risk level was caused by Cr. The risk through ingestion was higher than inhalation, and the risk levels were higher for children than for adults.

Kindergarten indoor dust metal(loid) exposure associates with elevated risk of anemia in children

Exposure to metals and metalloids in indoor dust is associated with adverse health effects in young children, but there is limited evidence for an association with anemia, which is at high risk in children. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between exposure to multiple metal(loid)s in indoor dust in kindergartens and the risk of anemia in children. In 2021, 2165 children from 25 kindergartens in eastern China were included in the study and had their hemoglobin (Hb) measured. Indoor dust samples were collected from the children's kindergartens, and the concentrations of 11 metals and metalloids in the samples were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). The daily exposure dose (DED) of dust was used to assess the risk of metal(loid) exposure in the children. The results showed that of the 2165 children with available data, 351 (16.2 %) met the WHO definition of anemia. In multiple linear regression and logistic regression analyses, we found that for each quartile of DED increase in Cd inhalation, child Hb levels decreased by 2.703 g/L (95 % CI: -4.055, -1.351), and the risk of anemia increased 1.602-fold (95 % CI: 1.087, 2.360). Mn ingestion was associated with increased odds of anemia [odds ratio (OR) = 1.760 (95 % CI: 1.217, 2.544)]. Interaction analysis indicated that metal(loid)s exposure effects were modified by child sex, age, and body mass index (BMI). Cluster analysis found that children at high risk of metal(loid) exposure in the school environment tended to have lower Hb levels and higher prevalence of anemia compared with those at low risk, although this was not statistically significant. These findings suggest that child school exposure to metal(loid)s in indoor dust is associated with an increased risk of developing anemia in children, modified by child sex, age, and BMI.

Speciation and bioaccessibility of arsenic in rice under different cooking methods and its implication in risk assessment

Numerous studies have studied the health risk assessment of human exposure to As or bioaccessible As via rice intake; however, the bioaccessibility of different As species in rice is seldom reported. In the present study, 31 rice samples were collected from markets or individual growers to investigate the speciation and bioaccessibility of As. Five different species (As^III, As^V, DMA, MMA, and AsB) were detected in rice samples from different regions, among which As^III accounted for the largest proportion (62.95% in average), followed by DMA and As^V. In addition, the cooking method could facilitate the release of As from rice into gastric and intestinal juice, and subsequently increase the bioaccessibility of As. The bioaccessibility of inorganic As in cooked rice ranged from 71.83 to 100%, and that of organic As ranged from 31.69 to 61.04%. Non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk assessment of children and adults exposure to As via rice intake considering the bioaccessibility of cooked rice was carried out. The target hazard quotient (THQ) of iAs and total As for children ranged from 0.21 to 1.61 and 0.48 to 2.26, respectively, while those for adults ranged from 0.12 to 0.88 and 0.26 to 1.23, respectively. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) for children and adults ranged from 9.57 [Formula: see text] 10^-5 to 7.25 [Formula: see text] 10^-4 and 5.21 [Formula: see text] 10^-5 to 3.95 [Formula: see text] 10^-4, respectively. The results of risk assessment indicated that children would face a higher health risk than adults when they took the same type of rice as their staple food.

Pollution Characteristics and Health Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals in Agricultural Soils over the Past Five Years in Zhejiang, Southeast China

Heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils has attracted increasing attention in recent years. In this study, 1999 agricultural soil samples were collected from 11 cities in Zhejiang Province from 2016 to 2020, and the spatial and temporal variation characteristics of 3 of the most important heavy metals, i.e., lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and chromium (Cr) were analyzed. The results showed that Cd had a slightly higher sample over-standard rate of 12.06%. Spatial distribution and temporal trends showed that the Pb concentrations overall increased from 2016 to 2020 and mainly accumulated in southern Zhejiang. In addition, multiple exposure routes were evaluated for human health risks. Children are more susceptible to the adverse effects of heavy metals in agricultural soils, and oral ingestion was the major exposure route. Cr poses higher human health risks to humans than Pb and Cd in agricultural soils. Therefore, more rigid environmental monitoring and related soil remediation counter-measures for some sites with high concentrations of heavy metals are necessary to limit the potential threat to human health.

Impact of mining on the metal content of dust in indigenous villages of northern Chile

Indigenous communities from northern Chile have historically been exposed to the impacts of massive copper industrial activities conducted in the region. Some of the communities belonging to the Alto El Loa Indigenous Development Area are located less than 10 km from the "Talabre'' tailings dam, which contains residues from copper production and other metals that can be toxic to human health (e.g., As, Sb, Cd, Mo, Pb). Given the increasing demand of copper production to achieve net-zero emission scenarios and concomitant expansions of the tailings, the exposure to toxic metals is a latent risk to local communities. Despite the impact that copper production could generate on ancestral communities from northern Chile, studies and monitoring are limited and the results are often not made accessible for local communities. Here, we evaluate such risks by characterizing metal concentrations in dust collected from roofs and windows of houses from the Alto El Loa area. Our results showed that As, Sb, Cd, Cu, Mo, Ag, S, and Pb concentrations in these matrices can be connected to local copper mining activities. Additionally, air transport models indicate that high concentrations of toxic elements (As, Sb, and Cd) can be explained by the atmospheric transport of particles from the tailings in a NE direction up to 50 km away. Pollution indices and Health Risk Assessment suggested a highly contaminated region with a health risk for its inhabitants. Our analysis on a local scale seeks to make visible the case of northern Chile as a critical territory where actions should be taken to mitigate the effects of mining in the face of this new scenario of international demand for the raw materials necessary for the transition to a net-zero carbon global society.

Heavy Metal Pollution and Risk Assessment of Surface Dust in the Arid NW China

High concentrations of heavy metals (HMs) in urban surface dust (USD) can be extremely hazardous to urban ecology and human health. Oasis cities are located at the edge of deserts and are more exposed to salt/sandstorms, and they face a significantly higher accumulation of USD than wet or semi-humid areas. However, systematic studies on the pollution and risk assessment of HMs in USD in oasis cities have rarely been conducted. This study systematically analyzed the enrichment status, spatial distribution, pollution levels, health risks, and sources of HMs in USD in a typical oasis city (Changji city). The results showed that the average concentrations of Pb, Ni, As, Cd, Hg, and Cu in the USD of Changji city were 46.83, 26.35, 9.92, 0.21, 0.047, and 59.33 mg/kg, respectively, and the results of the pollution index evaluation showed moderate Pb, Hg, and Cu pollution, mild Cd pollution, and no Ni or As pollution. The spatial distribution of HM concentrations in the USD was substantially heterogeneous. High values of Pb, Hg, and Cu concentrations were mainly observed in areas with relatively intensive transportation and commercial activities, and high values of Cd and Ni were observed in industrial areas. The health risk assessment showed that HMs do not pose non-carcinogenic risks to humans at their current level, but they pose a carcinogenic risk to children, with As contributing the largest carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks. The source identification of HMs showed that the main pollution of HMs were traffic sources for Pb and Cu, industrial sources for Ni and Cd, natural sources for As, and coal-fired sources for Hg. According to the results of the quantitative analysis with the positive matrix factorization, the contribution of pollution sources followed this order: industrial sources (31.08%) > traffic sources (26.80%) > coal-fired sources (23.31%) > natural sources (18.81%).

Effects of Nickel at Environmentally Relevant Concentrations on Human Corneal Epithelial Cells: Oxidative Damage and Cellular Apoptosis

Nickel (Ni) is ubiquitous in the environment and evidence has suggested that Ni can cause ocular surface inflammation, especially in fine particulate matter and personal products. Continuous daily exposure to Ni-containing dust may adversely impact the human cornea, whereas the underlying mechanism of this phenomenon remains not fully understood. Here, human corneal epithelial cells (HCEC) were employed to analyze the toxicity of Ni via detections of cell morphology, cell viability, reactive oxygen species production, cell apoptosis rate, and apoptotic gene expression levels after exposure for 24 h to uncover the damage of Ni to the cornea. A concentration-dependent inhibition of HCECs’ viability and growth was observed. In particular, Ni at 100 μM significantly decreased cell viability to 76%, and many cells displayed an abnormal shape and even induced oxidative damage of HCEC by increasing ROS to 1.2 times, and further led to higher apoptosis (24%), evidenced by up-regulation of apoptotic genes Caspase-8, Caspase-9, NF-κB, IL-1β, and Caspase-3, posing a risk of dry eye. Our study suggested that Ni induces apoptosis of HCEC through oxidative damage. Therefore, Ni pollution should be comprehensively considered in health risks or toxic effects on the ocular surface.

Potential Health Risks Associated with the Heavy Metal Content in Commonly Consumed Food from Prakasam District of Andhra Pradesh, India

The present study investigated the heavy metal (HM) accumulation in some food items and associated potential human health risk in the Prakasam district. Food samples were collected from 9 villages of different mandals mainly comprising of rice, wheat, green gram, red gram, black gram, potato, and amaranthus. The HMs chromium (Cr), arsenic (As), lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) were analyzed by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICPMS). The results showed that the HM concentrations in vegetables were higher than the cereals and pulses. The decreasing order of HM concentrations were observed as Cr > As > Pb > Cd > Hg, Cr > Pb > As = Cd > Hg and Cr > Pb > Cd > As > Hg in cereals, pulses, and vegetables, respectively. The dietary intake of cereals and vegetables contributed more exposure to HMs. The hazard index (HI) in case of cereals (3.648) and vegetables (1.003) exceeded 1 indicating the non-carcinogenic risk when these food items are consumed by adults. The HI in case of cereals (7.106) and vegetables (1.747) exceeded 1 indicating the health risks when these food items were consumed by children. The HI for cereals and vegetables in case of children is almost double to the HI of adults. The lifetime cancer risk was observed for Cr via consumption of rice and amaranthus, both in adults and children. In conclusion, health risk due to consumption of cereals and vegetables revealed both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for adults and children. The findings of the present study can be used for the development of potential strategies for risk control and management.

Effect of food processing method on heavy metals

The problem of high content of heavy metals in food has spread broadly over the world. The presented study suggests the minimization of heavy metal content in processed food due to different applied techniques such as the frying, boiling, steaming and sous-vide. Three main food products were chosen for investigation – Daucus carota subsp. Sativus (carrot), Solanum tuberosum (potato) and Allium cepa (onion). The concentration of heavy metals (Zn, Pb, Mn, Cd, Cu) was determined in samples investigated by atomic-absorption spectrometer. The health risk index (HRI) was calculated based on obtained data. In all investigated samples, high concentration of lead was identified among the heavy metals. The highest concentration of zinc, lead and manganese was determined in boiled Daucus carota subsp. Sativus, cadmium – in sous - vide Daucus carota subsp. Sativus, copper – in steamed Daucus carota subsp. Sativus. HRI values of cadmium for Solanum tuberosum samples were ranged from 6.8 to 7.1 and for lead are ranged between 3.4 and 4.9.

Characteristics, source apportionment and health risk assessment of heavy metals in urban road dust of the Pearl River Delta, South China

To investigate the characteristics of heavy metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Pb, Hg, Ni and Zn) in urban road dust from different cities and functional areas in the Pearl River Delta (PRD), South China, a total of 294 dust samples were analyzed. The contamination characteristics and health risk of heavy metals in the dust were assessed, their chemical speciation were distinguished, and their sources were identified by the correlations, cluster and principal component analysis (PCA). The mean concentrations of As (15.89 mg/kg), Cd (1.59 mg/kg), Cr (143.75 mg/kg), Cu (184.42 mg/kg), Pb (114.82 mg/kg), Hg (0.11 mg/kg), Ni (41.53 mg/kg) and Zn (645.94 mg/kg) in urban road dust were in high or moderate levels compare with other previous researches. In this case, the contamination of Cr, Cu, Ni and Zn in the industrial area (IA) and the contamination of Cd and Hg in the commercial area (CA) were significantly higher relative to other functional areas (P < 0.05), and the contamination of heavy metals in Foshan City was significantly higher than other cities (P < 0.01). The order of mobility of the heavy metals with higher concentration in urban road dust of the Pearl River Delta declined in the following order: Zn, Ni, Cu, Pb and Cr. Statistical analysis result showed the contaminated heavy metals in urban road dust were mainly contributed by industrial activities, traffic activities and building pollution. There were no significant carcinogenic and noncarcinogenic risks for adults, children however showed significant noncarcinogenic effect caused by As and Cr in partial points, albeit with low contamination level of the two metals. The ingestion was a principal pathway for heavy metals via urban road dust to exposure population. More protection measures should be considered to reduce children's exposure to the dust, especially in the CA and IA.

Probabilistic Health Risk Assessment of Trace Elements in Baby Food and Milk Powder Using ICP-OES Method

This study was conducted to evaluate the concentration and health risk of trace elements in milk powder and baby food samples marketed in Iran using inductive couple plasma/optical emission spectroscopy (ICP-OES) method. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) were ranged from 1.80 × 10^-5 to 2.17 × 10^-3 and 6.00 × 10^-5 to 7.22 × 10^-3 mg/kg, respectively, with recoveries ranged from 92 to 105%. Zinc (Zn) was found in a high mean concentration (8.49 × 10^-1 ± 3.93 × 10^-2 mg/kg) in milk powder, and iron (Fe) was found in the highest mean concentration (2.04 ± 3.61 × 10^-2 mg/kg) in baby food. The Monte Carlo simulation results for the infants revealed that the rank order of the hazard quotient (HQ) index was mercury (Hg) > nickel (Ni) > arsenic (As) > cadmium (Cd) > aluminum (Al). Further, the result of non-carcinogenic and probability of carcinogenic risk was lower than the limits of safe risk (HQ > 1 and cancer risk (CR) > 1 × 10^-4). In conclusion, the toxic elements content in the tested products was sufficiently low, and all of the milk powder and baby food sold in Iran could be considered safe for infants and children.

Characteristics and sources of Pb exposure via household dust from the urban area of Shanghai, China

Household dust has been considered as an important pathway for children's environmental Pb exposure. Shanghai was one of the first cities in China that removed Pb from petrol and has been shown in our previous study to have the lowest childhood blood Pb levels in China. This study therefore examines household dust Pb (Pb^HD) in Shanghai in order to determine the extent and exposure risks of Pb^HD. Household vacuum cleaner dust samples (n = 40) were collected and analyzed for total Pb concentration, bio-accessible Pb concentration and Pb isotopic compositions (Pb^IC). The mean concentration of Pb^HD was 195 mg/kg, which is between 7 and 10 times the Pb concentration of background soil samples from Shanghai. Among the investigated homes, those living in neighborhoods with lower average estate prices have higher dust Pb exposure risks for children. Bio-accessibility of Pb in household dust ranged between 53 and 91%, with a mean value of 71%. Analysis of Pb^IC of household dust samples (²⁰⁸Pb/²⁰⁶Pb: 2.1096 ± 0.0054; ²⁰⁷Pb/²⁰⁶Pb: 0.8648 ± 0.0025) are a close match to Pb^IC of coal combustion and solid waste incineration and fit well with those of outdoor air Pb^IC and urban surface soil Pb^IC of Shanghai. The study shows that children living in Shanghai are subject to Pb^HD exposure, with children living in the homes with lower average price having increased susceptibility to Pb^HD exposure. The data indicate that Pb^HD is derived primarily from contemporary coal combustion and solid waste incineration rather than common legacy Pb sources (e.g., Pb petrol and paint). Practices including closing doors and windows on days with poor air quality or high wind and preventing shoe wearing inside homes will aid in minimizing outdoor surface soil and ambient particulate intrusion indoors.

Removal of Toxic and Essential Nutrient Elements from Commercial Rice Brands Using Different Washing and Cooking Practices: Human Health Risk Assessment

This study determined the influence of different cooking procedures on the removal of toxic elements (TEs) including arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) along with other nutrient elements from different commercially available rice brands sold in Bangladeshi markets. We observed 33%, 35%, and 27% average removal of As, Cd, and Pb accordingly from rice when cooked with a rice to water ratio of 1:6 after washing 5 times. We also found a significant reduction in essential elements: Zn (17%), Cu (10%), Mn (22%), Se (49%), and Mo (22%), when rice cooking was performed as in traditional practice. Daily dietary intakes were found to be between 0.36 and 1.67 µg/kgbw for As, 0.06 and 1.15 µg/kgbw for Cd, and 0.04 and 0.17 µg/kgbw for Pb when rice was cooked by the rice cooker method (rice:water 1:2), while in the traditional method (rice:water 1:6) daily intake rates ranged from 0.23 to 1.3 µg/kgbw for As, 0.04 to 0.88 µg/kgbw for Cd, and 0.03 to 0.15 µg/kgbw for Pb for adults. The HQ and ILCR for As, Cd, and Pb revealed that there is a possibility of noncarcinogenic and carcinogenic risk for As but no appreciable risk for Cd and Pb from consumption of rice.

Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi Are an Influential Factor in Improving the Phytoremediation of Arsenic, Cadmium, Lead, and Chromium

The increasing expansion of mines, factories, and agricultural lands has caused many changes and pollution in soils and water of several parts of the world. In recent years, metal(loid)s are one of the most dangerous environmental pollutants, which directly and indirectly enters the food cycle of humans and animals, resulting in irreparable damage to their health and even causing their death. One of the most important missions of ecologists and environmental scientists is to find suitable solutions to reduce metal(loid)s pollution and prevent their spread and penetration in soil and groundwater. In recent years, phytoremediation was considered a cheap and effective solution to reducing metal(loid)s pollution in soil and water. Additionally, the effect of soil microorganisms on increasing phytoremediation was given special attention; therefore, this study attempted to investigate the role of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus in the phytoremediation system and in reducing contamination by some metal(loid)s in order to put a straightforward path in front of other researchers.

A comprehensive analysis on source-distribution-bioaccumulation-exposure risk of metal(loid)s in various vegetables in peri-urban areas of Shenzhen, China

The health risk induced by metal(loid)s in crops are becoming increasingly serious. In this study, eight major vegetables and rhizosphere soils were collected in a peri-urban area with intense electronic information manufacturing activities. The source, distribution and bioaccumulation of six typical metal(loid)s in different vegetable species were analyzed, and exposure risk through vegetable ingestion was estimated. Results showed that vegetables and agricultural soils in the study area suffered from serious metal(loid)s pollution, especially for Cd and Pb. The bioaccumulation capacity differed greatly among individual metal(loid)s and vegetable categories. In general, the highest transfer factors (TF) for Cd, Pb, and As were found in leafy vegetables, while leguminous vegetables had the highest TF of Cu and Zn and root vegetables had the highest TF for Cr. Significant correlations were found between concentrations in vegetables and rhizosphere soils for most metal(loid)s, the exceptions being Pb and Zn. The enrichment of Pb, Cd, Cr and As was mainly attributed to electronic information manufacturing activities, while the enrichment of Zn, Cu and Cd was associated with the application of commercial fertilizers and pesticides. The health risk associated with vegetable intake decreased in the order of leafy > fruit > leguminous > root vegetables. Leafy vegetables were identified as the category with the highest risk, with the mean risk value of 1.26. Cd was the major risk element for leafy vegetables. The non-carcinogenic risks estimated for leguminous and root vegetables were under the acceptable level. In conclusion, special attention should be paid to the health risks of toxic metal(loid)s in leafy vegetables in peri-urban areas with intense electronic information manufacturing activities. In order to minimize health risk, it is necessary to identify low-risk crops based on a comprehensive consideration of the metal(loid)s' pollution characteristics, transfer factors and local people's consumption behaviors.

Heavy Metal Contamination in Oryza sativa L. at the Eastern Region of Malaysia and Its Risk Assessment

Paddy plants tend to accumulate heavy metals from both natural and anthropogenic sources, and this poses adverse risks to human health. The objective of this study was to investigate heavy metal contamination in paddy plants in Kelantan, Malaysia, and its health risk assessment. The bioaccumulation of heavy metals was studied by means of enrichment (EF) and translocation factors (TF). The health risk assessment was performed based on USEPA guidelines. The EF for heavy metals in the studied areas was in the descending order of Cu > As > Cr > Cd > Pb. Meanwhile, Cr and Pb exhibited higher TF values from stem to grain compared with the others. The combined hazard index (HI) resulting from five heavy metals exceeded the acceptable limit (HI >1). The lifetime cancer risk, in both adult and children, was beyond the acceptable limit (10-4) and mainly resulted from exposure. The total cancer risk (CRt) due to simultaneous exposures to multiple carcinogenic elements also exceeded 10-4. In conclusion, intake of heavy metal through rice ingestion is likely to cause both non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic health risks. Further research is required to investigate the extent of heavy metal contamination in agricultural soils and, moreover, to establish human exposure as a result of rice consumption.

Heavy metals in soil from gangue stacking areas increases children health risk and causes developmental neurotoxicity in zebrafish larvae

Coal is the main energy source in China, with 4.5 billion metric tons of coal gangue accumulating near the mining areas in the process of coal mining. The objectives of the present study were to identify the health risks to children from soil pollution caused by coal gangue accumulation and to clarify the possible developmental neurotoxicity caused by this accumulation using zebrafish (Danio rerio) as a model. The results reveal that As and seven other heavy metals in soil samples from the gangue dumping area to the downstream villages exhibited distance-dependent concentration variations and posed substantial potential non-carcinogenic risks to local children. Additionally, soil leachate could affect the key processes of early neurodevelopment in zebrafish at critical windows, mainly including the alterations of cytoskeleton regulation (α1-tubulin), axon growth (gap43), neuronal myelination (mbp) and synapse formation (sypa, sypb, and psd95), eventually leading to hypoactivity in the zebrafish larvae. These findings suggest the possible health risks of soil pollution in the coal gangue stacking areas to children, particularly affecting their early neurodevelopment.

Health Risk Assessment of Metals via Multi-Source Oral Exposure for Children Living in Areas with Intense Electronic Manufacturing Activities

Oral ingestion is the predominant pathway of metal(loid)s exposure. In this study, the health risks of typical metal(loid)s (including Mn, As, Cr, Cd, and Pb) via multi-source, oral pathways for children aged 3-12 years, living in an area of China dominated by the electronic manufacturing industry, were studied based on the field sampling of duplicated diet, soil, and drinking water. Child-specific ingestion parameters were measured (except the soil ingestion rates, which were from a previous study of the same population), and a Monte Carlo method was applied to determine the uncertainty of the risk assessment. It was observed that children living in such environments were at risk of metal(loid)s exposure, with the accumulative carcinogenic risk exceeding the maximum acceptable level. Food intake was identified to be the primary exposure pathway. Moreover, Pb and Cr were the major risk elements to local children's health. Compared with primary school students, kindergarten children experienced a higher risk. This study highlights that high attention should be paid to children living in suburban areas dominated by the electronic manufacturing industry, and that priority should be given to studies on metal(loid)s exposure deriving from different types of food and their corresponding bioavailability, in order to further discern the precise risk sources to protect children's health.

Pollution evaluation and children's multimedia exposure of atmospheric arsenic deposition in the Pearl River Delta, China

The populous Pearl River Delta (PRD) region in China suffers from serious air arsenic (As) pollution. The objective of this study was to explore the pollution situation of atmospheric arsenic deposition in the PRD region, and to evaluate the associated multimedia daily intake in children. The average deposition flux was 3921.7 μg/m²/year during the 2016-2017, and the pollution situation was even worse than that in 2015. A continuously increasing trend of arsenic atmospheric deposition was found. The bioaccessibility of As in the settled dust was determined as about 22% by a physiologically based extraction test (PBET). After corrected with the bioaccessibilities of As in the settled dust and food items, the geometry means (GM) value of daily uptake through multimedia ingestion of produce (dust and diet) originated from arsenic atmospheric deposition was 0.23 μg/kg/day for 1- to 6-year-old children. The contribution of the non-dietary oral exposure (settled dust) was negligible and just accounted for only 0.01% of the daily uptake. This estimated value was much lower than those in the literatures, in which the bioaccessibility of As was not taken into account, concluding that the role of the settled dust in the total daily intake may have been overestimated previously. Milk, eggs and freshwater fish were the dominant pathways for children to intake the products derived from atmospheric arsenic deposition. There still be a concern about the high non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic risk by long-term multimedia ingestion. Special care should be considered toward the emission sources of air arsenic, including the coal combustion from industries and construction dust, etc., to reduce the negative effect of air arsenic in children.

Occurrence and risk assessment of herbicides and fungicides in atmospheric particulate matter in Hanoi, Vietnam

Vietnam is a Southeast Asian developing country with rapidly increasing air pollution, especially in large cities. Over 350,000 chemicals and chemical mixtures are produced and used in Vietnam; however, the country has only implemented air quality standards for 44 substances, which are primarily focused on inorganic and volatile organic compounds. Although numerous pesticides are frequently applied across large cities in Vietnam, information on their concentrations in atmospheric particulate matter (APM) is limited. Therefore, to investigate their occurrence and health effects, 187 pesticides in APM were screened using the liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry-quadrupole time of flight- Sequential Window Acquisition of All Theoretical Fragment Ion Spectra method (LC-QTOF-MS-SWATH). A total of 22 pesticides (16 fungicides and 6 herbicides) were quantified in the dry and rainy seasons. Among them, 19 substances were quantified in APM for the first time in Vietnam. Their median total concentrations in the dry season were higher than those in the rainy season, and the concentrations in the daytime were one-third of the night-time concentrations in both seasons. Their total levels ranged from 0.82 to 21.1 ng m^-3 (median, 3.63 ng m^-3), the detection frequencies of 9 pesticides were higher than 70%, and 7-14 pesticides were detected per sample (median, 10). Some of the detected pesticides were likely sourced from their prevalent use in amenity turf protection (e.g., in parks and public roads) and weed control (e.g., in gardens, floriculture, and agriculture). The total daily intake (DI_air) values for adults, children, and infants were 8.17E-06, 2.06E-05, and 2.45E-05 mg kg^-1 d^-1, respectively, and the highest Hazard Quotients (HQs) were 4.81E-04, 1.22E-03, and 1.44E-03, respectively. All HQs and HIs of the pesticides were < 1 for all population groups (adults, children, and infants), indicating negligible exposure risks.

Comprehensive screen the lead and other toxic metals in total environment from a coal-gas industrial city (NW, China): Based on integrated source-specific risks and site-specific blood lead levels of 0-6 aged children

A new integrated source-specific risk model and site-specific blood lead levels (BLLs) of 0-6 children were introduced to comprehensive understand the status of the toxic metals in soil-dust-plant total environment from a Coal-Gas industrial city, NW China. 144 samples were collected and ten toxic metals (As, Ba, Co, Cr, Cu, Mn, Ni, Sr, Pb, and Zn) were screened by XRF and ICP-MS. It was found that the occurrences of toxic metals deferred in the different medium, such as Co, Cu, Pb, and Zn observed the trend of accumulating in soil and plant compared to clustered distributions of Cr, Mn and Ni preferred to accumulate in dust. However, few bioaccumulations observed in Ulmus pumila L. Toxic metals distributions in majority of sites influenced by coal combustion mixed sources and industrial activities posed the high integrated ecological risks and caused significant non-carcinogenic and carcinogenic integrated risks for local 0-6 children identified by new integrated source-specific risk model, especially observed in the priority contaminants Co and Pb. The site-specific BLLs confirmed that younger children fewer than 4 lived in the north region were more vulnerable to priority Pb pollution as their BLLs above 50 μg/L, almost up to 80 μg/L. Although proportions of source-specific risks to toxic metals changed in soil and dust, the critical sources from coal combustions and industrial activities posed the most important contribution to the local risks. Therefore, effective strategies targeting at critical sources on coal industries should be conducted to reduce risks, and mostly emphasize on the north hotspot areas.

Analysis of the soil to food crops transfer factor and risk assessment of multi-elements at the suburban area of Ho Chi Minh city, Vietnam using instrumental neutron activation analysis (INAA)

The contamination of heavy metals in agricultural ecosystem is one of the most important problems in developing countries as Vietnam. In this study, we investigated the multi-element concentrations in soil, vegetables, soil-to-plant transfer factors and target hazard quotient (THQ) due to the consumption of heavy metals in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. In general, the element concentrations in soil and plants were similar to different studies in the world and in the range of allowable values provided by WHO and the Ministry of Health of Vietnam. The transfer factors indicated the influence of element characteristics and plant genotypes on the accumulation and translocation of elements from soil to plants. It is found that I. batatas, B. alba, A, tricolor, O. basilicum, and B. juncea could be potential candidates for phytoremediation in soil contaminated of heavy metals. The results of individual and total THQ were below unity for Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Zn, As, and Sb. The total THQ is in the range from 0.11 for R. sativus to 0.84 for B. alba with the average value of 0.43, in which Mn and As are the major contributions to the total THQ with the average values of 75% and 18%, respectively. The safety assessment based on national regulations and THQ indicated that the consumption of investigated vegetables poses no risk to the consumers.

A comprehensive review on magnetic carbon nanotubes and carbon nanotube-based buckypaper for removal of heavy metals and dyes

Industrial effluents contain several organic and inorganic contaminants. Among others, dyes and heavy metals introduce a serious threat to drinking waterbodies. These pollutants can be noxious or carcinogenic in nature, and harmful to humans and different aquatic species. Therefore, it is of high importance to remove heavy metals and dyes to reduce their environmental toxicity. This has led to an extensive research for the development of novel materials and techniques for the removal of heavy metals and dyes. One route to the removal of these pollutants is the utilization of magnetic carbon nanotubes (CNT) as adsorbents. Magnetic carbon nanotubes hold remarkable properties such as surface-volume ratio, higher surface area, convenient separation methods, etc. The suitable characteristics of magnetic carbon nanotubes have led them to an extensive search for their utilization in water purification. Along with magnetic carbon nanotubes, the buckypaper (BP) membranes are also favorable due to their unique strength, high porosity, and adsorption capability. However, BP membranes are mostly used for salt removal from the aqueous phase and limited literature shows their applications for removal of heavy metals and dyes. This study focuses on the existence of heavy metal ions and dyes in the aquatic environment, and methods for their removal. Various fabrication approaches for the development of magnetic-CNTs and CNT-based BP membranes are also discussed. With the remarkable separation performance and ultra-high-water flux, magnetic-CNTs, and CNT-based BP membranes have a great potential to be the leading technologies for water treatment in future.

Lead and cadmium exposure network in children in a periurban area in India: susceptibility and health risk

To investigate the complex Pb-Cd exposure network in school-going children, a thorough investigation of the probable exposure means (diet, water, and school micro-environments such as paint dust and school courtyard soil) and exposure route (ingestion, inhalation and dermal) was carried out in a periurban area spanning three districts in southern Assam, India. Multivariate statistical analysis was carried out to understand the complex data matrices, and the health risk assessments (carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic) based on US EPA Risk Assessment models were also made. We found the median values to be 0.9-4.0 mg Pb/kg and 0.21-6.2 mg Cd/kg in various food items. Groundwater also had Pb (0.13-0.48 mg/L) and Cd (0.11-0.29 mg/L). Pb levels in paint dust were within the permissible limits, but 50% of the samples had higher than permissible levels of Cd. Approximately 23% of the school courtyard soil had Pb above the global background levels, but all the samples had 4-27 times elevated levels of Cd in them. School micro-environment contributed significantly to the metal load in children due to their typical hand-to-mouth behavior and dietary intake (food and water) via ingestion was the most prominent route of exposure in children. The evaluation of the estimated chronic daily intake and the hazard quotient indicated hazardous exposure over a lifetime to both Pb and Cd, but only Cd posed a prominent cancer risk. It could be concluded that chronic insidious effects of metals would be a noteworthy toxicological threat to children when exposed early on.

Understanding Potential Heavy Metal Contamination, Absorption, Translocation and Accumulation in Rice and Human Health Risks

Rice is a worldwide staple food and heavy metal contamination is often reported in rice production. Heavy metal can originate from natural sources or be present through anthropogenic contamination. Therefore, this review summarizes the current status of heavy metal contamination in paddy soil and plants, highlighting the mechanism of uptake, bioaccumulation, and health risk assessment. A scoping search employing Google Scholar, Science Direct, Research Gate, Scopus, and Wiley Online was carried out to build up the review using the following keywords: heavy metals, absorption, translocation, accumulation, uptake, biotransformation, rice, and human risk with no restrictions being placed on the year of study. Cadmium (Cd), arsenic (As), and lead (Pb) have been identified as the most prevalent metals in rice cultivation. Mining and irrigation activities are primary sources, but chemical fertilizer and pesticide usage also contribute to heavy metal contamination of paddy soil worldwide. Further to their adverse effect on the paddy ecosystem by reducing the soil fertility and grain yield, heavy metal contamination represents a risk to human health. An in-depth discussion is further offered on health risk assessments by quantitative measurement to identify potential risk towards heavy metal exposure via rice consumption, which consisted of in vitro digestion models through a vital ingestion portion of rice.

Trace metal(loid)s contamination in paddy rice (Oryza sativa L.) from wetlands near two gold mines in Côte d'Ivoire and health risk assessment

This study examined the concentrations of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and mercury (Hg) in rice grains grown in wetlands associated with gold mining in central-southern of Côte d'Ivoire to evaluate potential health risks exposure via rice consumption. In total, 30 rice grains were sampled around Agbaou and Bonikro gold mines. Arsenic and cadmium concentrations were determined using an inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometer (ICP-OES), while atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) was used for mercury. Results showed that As and Hg average concentrations in rice were above the permissible limits, while Cd average concentrations were below the permissible limit established by FAO/WHO in both sites. Except for Hg at Agbaou, no significant (p < 0.05) difference was found between trace metal concentrations in the two sites. The average daily intake (ADI) of As via rice consumption exceeded the USEPA reference dose (RfD) of 0.0003 μg g^-1 day^-1, indicating that rice ingestion is a pathway of As exposure for adults and children in the area. The average values of non-carcinogen (HQ) for As and carcinogen (CR) for As and Cd risks index suggest that potential health risks exist for both adults and children due to rice consumption at Agbaou and Bonikro. The maximum safe weekly consumption (MSWC) of rice relative to As, Cd, and Hg was estimated for the study area. Overall, this study provides strong evidence that As could threaten local population health in Côte d'Ivoire regions where gold mine extraction is occurring through rice ingestion.

Identifying dust as the dominant source of exposure to heavy metals for residents around battery factories in the Battery Industrial Capital of China

Heavy metals (HMs) are constantly released into the environment during the production and use of batteries. Battery manufacturing has been ongoing for over six decades in the "Battery Industrial Capital" (located in Xinxiang City) of China, but the potential exposure pathways of residents in this region to HMs remain unclear. To clarify the exposure pathways and health risk of human exposure to HMs, hand wipe samples (n=82) and fingernail samples (n=36) were collected from residents (including young children (0-6 years old), children (7-12 years old) and adults (30-60 years old)) living around battery factories. The total concentrations of the target HMs (Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cd, Co) in hand wipes ranged from 133 to 8040 μg/m², and those in fingernails ranged from 9.7-566 μg/g. HM levels in the hand wipe and fingernail samples both decreased with age, and higher HM levels were observed for males than females. The HM composition profiles in these two matrices represented a high degree of similarity, with Zn as the predominant element, and thus, oral ingestion and dermal exposure via dust were expected to be the most important HM exposure pathways for residents in this region. The non-carcinogenic risks (HQs) from dermal and oral ingestion exposure to Cd, Cr, and Pb were higher than those of the other five elements for all three populations, and the HQ_derm of Cd for young children was 2.1 (HQ_oral=0.6). Moreover, the hazard index (HI) values of ∑₈HMs for young children (HI_total=5.2, HI_oral=2.0, HI_dermal=3.2) and children (HI_total=1.6, HI_oral=1.3, HI_dermal=0.3) exceeded the safe threshold (1.0). Therefore, young children and children should be prioritized for protection from HM pollution, and more attention should be paid to young children's dermal exposure to Cd in this region.

Health risk assessment of total exposure from cadmium in South China

Heavy metal pollution and hazards are a global major concern. Heavy metals can be directly or indirectly harmful to humans through ingestion, inhalation, and deraml. According to the literature survey, cadmium (Cd) total exposure assessment and health risk assessment were performed in a population group from South China. Results showed that the Cd contents in PM_2.5 and vegetables exceeded national standard limits. The same sources of Cd pollution contributed to different media; the main sources were artificial industrial activities such as electroplating, mining and smelting. The average daily dose of Cd via ingestion exceeded the provisional tolerable monthly intake proposed by the Joint Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA). Multimedia exposure via all three pathways followed the order 0-5-year-old children (3.26 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1·d^-1)>6-17-year-old children (1.46 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1·d^-1)>adults (1.18 × 10^-3 mg kg^-1·d^-1). The exposure from point source pollution was quite different from the results for nonpoint sources. Ingestion was the exposure pathway that contributes the largest proportion of multipathway and multimedia total exposure, accounting for over 99% of the total exposure in different populations. Staple foods, vegetables and meat were the three main exposure media for ingestion. The hazard quotients of multipathway and multimedia exposure to Cd in different populations were 5.57, 2.87 and 2.26, respectively, all at unacceptable risk levels. This study highlights the importance of multipathway and multimedia in the health risk assessment of heavy metal exposure in South China, and provides risk management measures to reduce noncarcinogenic health risks.

Environmental health risk assessment of heavy metal exposure among children living in an informal e-waste processing village in Viet Nam

This study was conducted to compare the exposure levels of five heavy metals via different pathways based on the field samplings and questionnaire surveys of children residing in an informal e-waste processing village and a reference village in Viet Nam. The findings revealed that levels of the total average daily intake (ADI) of the five heavy metals collected from a child at the exposed village were 3.90 times higher (p < 0.01) than that of a child at the reference village. Ingestion of cooked rice was the largest contributor to the total ADI of the children tested at both villages. However, the risks from water drinking and dermal contact of soil were negligible. The total non-carcinogenic risk and carcinogenic risk in an exposed child were significantly higher (p < 0.01) than their respective risks in a reference child. The non-carcinogenic risk to an exposed child was likely to occur, while the risk to a reference child was negligible. The carcinogenic risks found in children from both of the villages, however, were higher than the acceptable values, indicating the potential health risks to the children from both villages. The susceptibility of children to heavy metal contaminations shown in this study suggests that a mitigating measure need to be initiated jointly by a public agency and a private organization to prevent children from the risks of being exposed to the contaminants.
