Current status of microbes involved in the degradation of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) pollutants in the aquatic ecosystem

Identification of a Novel Ibuprofen Biotransformation Pathway in Streptomyces sp. D218 and Detoxification as Indicated by the Green Algae Scenedesmus obliquus

Ibuprofen, a widely used nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug, contaminates agricultural products and potentially threatens human health due to its frequent detection and poor biodegradability. Microbial metabolism dominates the elimination of residual ibuprofen in the environment. In mineral salt medium at pH 6 with 5 mM glucose, Streptomyces sp. D218 transformed ibuprofen concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 0.40 mM in 24 h. The optimal temperature, pH, and initial OD600 nm for ibuprofen transformation by strain D218 were 25-37 °C, 5.0-6.0, and 1.0-1.5, respectively. Strain D218 could simultaneously transform ibuprofen into the intermediates 2-hydroxyibuprofen and ibuprofen amide (IBUA). The two intermediates were further metabolized to 2-hydroxyibuprofen amide (2HIBUA), thus relieving the growth inhibition of ibuprofen in Scenedesmus obliquus. This is the first complete pathway reported for the detoxification of ibuprofen transformation by a Gram-positive strain. These findings further our understanding of the microbial catabolism of the IBU.

Synthesis of zero valent copper/iron nanoparticles using Piper betle leaves for the removal of pharmaceutical contaminant atorvastatin

In this study, bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles were synthesized using the green approach with Piper betle leaves, and the removal efficiency of one of the pharmaceutical compounds, Atorvastatin, was investigated. UV, SEM, FTIR, EDAX, particle size, and zeta potential measurements were used to confirm nanoparticle fabrication. The removal efficiency of Atorvastatin (10 mg/L) by bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles was 67% with a contact time of 30 min at pH 4, the adsorbent dosage of 0.2 g/L, and stirring at 100 rpm. Piper betle bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles have demonstrated excellent stability, reusability, and durability, even after being reused five times. Furthermore, the synthesized bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles demonstrated remarkable antimicrobial properties against gram-negative strains such as Escherichia coli and Klebsiella pneumoniae, gram-positive strains such as Staphylococcus aureus and Bacillus subtilis, and fungi such as Aspergillus niger. In addition, the antioxidant properties of the synthesized bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles were assessed using the DPPH radical scavenging assay. The results indicated that the nanoparticles had good antioxidant activity. Thus, using Piper betle extract to make Cu-Fe nanoparticles made the procedure less expensive, chemical-free, and environmentally friendly, and the synthesized bimetallic Cu-Fe nanoparticles helped remove the pharmaceutical compound Atorvastatin from wastewater.

Characteristics and functional bacteria of an efficient benzocaine-mineralizing bacterial consortium

The extensive use of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) has led to widespread residual pollution, which increases the risk of the development of drug resistance in pathogenic microorganisms. Benzocaine is a PPCP that is widely used medical anesthesia and in sunscreen. Microorganisms are essential for the degradation of residual PPCPs. However, no studies have reported the microbial degradation of benzocaine. In this study, through continuous enrichment of the initial consortium HJ1, the highly efficient benzocaine-degrading consortium HJ7 was obtained, HJ7 exhibited a degradation rate that was 1.92 times greater than that of HJ1. Methyl 4-aminobenzoate and 4-aminobenzoic acid were identified as major intermediate products during benzocaine biodegradation by consortium HJ1 or HJ7. Methylobacillus (57.8 % ± 0.9 %) and Pseudomonas (22.1 % ± 0.7 %), which are thought to harbor essential species for benzocaine degradation, were significantly enriched in consortium HJ7. Two benzocaine-degrading strains, Pseudomonas sp. A8 and Microbacterium sp. A741, and one methyl 4-aminobenzoate-degrading strain, Achromobacter sp. A5, were isolated from consortium HJ7, and they synergistically mineralized benzocaine. These findings not only provide new insights into the biotransformation of benzocaine but also provide strain resources for the bioremediation of residual benzocaine in the environment.

Host-associated microbes mitigate the negative impacts of aquatic pollution

Pollution can negatively impact aquatic ecosystems, aquaculture operations, and recreational water quality. Many aquatic microbes can sequester or degrade pollutants and have been utilized for bioremediation. While planktonic and benthic microbes are well-studied, host-associated microbes likely play an important role in mitigating the negative impacts of aquatic pollution and represent an unrealized source of microbial potential. For example, aquatic organisms that thrive in highly polluted environments or concentrate pollutants may have microbiomes adapted to these selective pressures. Understanding microbe-pollutant interactions in sensitive and valuable species could help protect human well-being and improve ecosystem resilience. Investigating these interactions using appropriate experimental systems and overcoming methodological challenges will present novel opportunities to protect and improve aquatic systems. In this perspective, we review examples of how microbes could mitigate negative impacts of aquatic pollution, outline target study systems, discuss challenges of advancing this field, and outline implications in the face of global changes.

Relationship among micro-pollutants, economic growth, renewable energy, nanotechnology and ecological foot prints of China: evidence from panel data analysis

An important concern is the availability of clean drinking water, which is an essential need for human survival. This issue arises due to the existence of hazardous micropollutants originating from various emission sources. Nanotechnology aids in the mitigation of micropollutants by assimilating and counteracting their effects, hence diminishing their influence on water and other ecosystems. The study investigates the relationship between nanotechnological progress, the adoption of renewable energy, environmental consequences, and economic growth in China, using the Environmental Kuznets Curve theory as a conceptual framework. The study employs panel cointegration tests to analyze structural breaks from 2000 to 2020. Nanotechnology is expected to reduce environmental degradation and the presence of micro-pollutants by increasing the use of renewable energy and promoting energy conservation. Nanotechnology is crucial for mitigating micro-pollutants and advancing sustainable development in this specific context. However, the literature also highlights the harmful consequences of nanoparticle emissions caused by nanotechnology on human and environmental health for a long duration, requiring more examination. This research is the first empirical inquiry into the relationship between improvements in nanotechnology, the use of renewable energy, economic growth, and ecological effect, all within the context of the Environmental Kuznets Curve theory. The results confirm the successful incorporation of all components with a focus on long-term outcomes. The findings suggest that the EKC hypothesis is relevant in China. In China, advancements in nanotechnology have a moderating effect on environmental degradation. The use of renewable energy sources in China enhances environmental circumstances. Given the offered empirical evidence, it is advisable for the government to have a leading role in the development of innovative nanotechnologies that have low emissions of nanoparticles. By using this approach, it will be possible to encourage the conservation of energy and the use of renewable sources in a more secure way, hence improving the effectiveness of sustainable development initiatives.

Enhanced Selective Degradation of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products by β-Cyclodextrin-Decorated ZIF-67 Nanocomposites in Reclaimed Water

A peroxymonosulfate oxidation system was developed via modification of β-cyclodextrin (β-CD) on the surface of Fe2+-doped ZIF-67 (CD/Fe@ZIF-67) as an activator. The 99.7% carbamazepine, 91.3% bisphenol A (BPA), and 95.4% diclofenac (DCF) degradation efficiency were achieved within 10 min, 60, and 1 min, respectively. The hydrophobicity of these three pollutants is positively correlated with their adsorption kinetic constants by CD/Fe@ZIF-67 due to the introduction of β-CD. Scavenger experiments and electron spin resonance spectra confirmed that carbamazepine was preferentially oxidized by SO4•- [λ(SO4•-)(70.5%) > λ(•OH)(28.2%) > λ(O2•-)(1.3%)], where SO4•- and O2•- played dominant roles in the degradation of BPA [λ(SO4•-)(71.7%) > λ(O2•-)(22.8%) > λ(•OH)(5.5%)], and O2•- was responsible for DCF removal [λ(O2•-) = 93.2%]. Additionally, the particulate catalyst was immobilized in the shell side of a ceramic membrane in a membrane reactor for catalyst recovery. This reactor achieved nearly 100% removal efficiency under optimal conditions: 0.036 wt % catalyst loading, 0.5 mM peroxymonosulfate concentration, 1 L inflow, 10 mg/L initial carbamazepine concentration, and 0.012 L/min hydraulic retention time. In summary, this study elucidates the active role of β-CD in a polymetallic/peroxymonosulfate system and provides valuable insights into the development of effective oxidation methods for pharmaceutical and personal care products in wastewater.

Assessing the pharmaceutical residues as hotspots of the main rivers of Catalonia, Spain

The global increase in pharmaceutical consumption, driven by factors such as aging populations and chronic diseases, has raised concerns regarding the environmental impact of pharmaceutical contaminants. Europe, and more specifically Catalonia (Spain), exhibits high pharmaceutical consumption rates, potentially exacerbating environmental contamination. Pharmaceuticals enter rivers through various pathways, persisting after wastewater treatment plants and posing risks to aquatic organisms and human health. Llobregat and Besòs Rivers in Catalonia, crucial water sources, demonstrate detectable pharmaceutical levels, necessitating comprehensive analysis. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) proves effective in detecting pharmaceutical residues, facilitating their risk assessment. This paper reviews the occurrence, fate, and risks associated with 78 pharmaceuticals and metabolite in Llobregat and Besòs Rivers, using LC-MS/MS for analysis. Understanding pharmaceutical impacts on Catalonian River ecosystems is essential for developing mitigation strategies.

Hydrogel immobilized bacteria@MOFs composite towards Bisphenol A degradation and the interconnection mechanism elucidation

Bisphenol A (BPA) degradation efficiency by bacteria or by metal-organic-frameworks (MOFs) catalyzed persulfate (PMS) oxidation have been studied intensively. However, their synergistic effect on BPA degradation was less reported. In this study, we combined previously synthesized CNT-hemin/Mn-MOF with an BPA degrading bacteria SQ-2 to form a composite (SQ-2@MOFs). CNT-hemin/Mn-MOF in the composite catalyzed little PMS to promote the degradation efficiency of SQ-2 on BPA. Results indicated SQ-2@MOFs significantly accelerated BPA degradation rate than SQ-2 alone. Furthermore, SQ-2@MOFs composite was successfully immobilized in hydrogel to achieve better degradation performance. Immobilized SQ-2@MOFs could almost completely degrade 1-20 mg/L BPA within 24 h and completely degrade 5 mg/L BPA at pH 4-8. Besides, degradation byproducts also reduced by immobilized SQ-2@MOFs, which promoted the cleaner biodegradation of BPA. Metabolomics and multiple chemical characterization results revealed the interconnection mechanism between CNT-hemin/Mn-MOFs, SQ-2 and hydrogel. CNT-hemin/Mn-MOF helped SQ-2 degrade BPA into more biodegradable products, promoted electron transfer, and augmented BPA degradation ability of SQ-2 itself. SQ-2 enabled the surface electronegativity of SQ-2@MOFs more suitable for BPA contact. Meanwhile, SQ-2 avoided the loss of Fe and Mn of CNT-hemin/Mn-MOF. Hydrogel augmented the above synergistic effect. This study provided new perspective for the development of biodegradation materials through interdisciplinary integration.

Rational management of the plant microbiome for the Second Green Revolution

The Green Revolution of the mid-20th century transformed agriculture worldwide and has resulted in environmental challenges. A new approach, the Second Green Revolution, seeks to enhance agricultural productivity while minimizing negative environmental impacts. Plant microbiomes play critical roles in plant growth and stress responses, and understanding plant-microbiome interactions is essential for developing sustainable agricultural practices that meet food security and safety challenges, which are among the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. This review provides a comprehensive exploration of key deterministic processes crucial for developing microbiome management strategies, including the host effect, the facilitator effect, and microbe-microbe interactions. A hierarchical framework for plant microbiome modulation is proposed to bridge the gap between basic research and agricultural applications. This framework emphasizes three levels of modulation: single-strain, synthetic community, and in situ microbiome modulation. Overall, rational management of plant microbiomes has wide-ranging applications in agriculture and can potentially be a core technology for the Second Green Revolution.

Current strategies on bioremediation of personal care products and detergents: Sustainability and life cycle assessment

The increased use of personal care products and detergents in modern society has raised concerns about their potential adverse effects on the environment. These products contain various chemical compounds that can persist in water bodies, leading to water pollution and ecological disturbances. Bioremediation has emerged as a promising approach to address these challenges, utilizing the natural capabilities of microorganisms to degrade or remove these contaminants. This review examines the current strategies employed in the bioremediation of personal care products and detergents, with a specific focus on their sustainability and environmental impact. This bioremediation is essential for environmental rejuvenation, as it uses living organisms to detergents and other daily used products. Its distinctiveness stems from sustainable, nature-centric ways that provide eco-friendly solutions for pollution eradication and nurturing a healthy planet, all while avoiding copying. Explores the use of microbial consortia, enzyme-based treatments, and novel biotechnological approaches in the context of environmental remediation. Additionally, the ecological implications and long-term sustainability of these strategies are assessed. Understanding the strengths and limitations of these bioremediation techniques is essential for developing effective and environmentally friendly solutions to mitigate the impact of personal care products and detergents on ecosystems.

What Approaches Should be Used to Prioritize Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products for Research on Environmental and Human Health Exposure and Effects?

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are released from multiple anthropogenic sources and thus have a ubiquitous presence in the environment. The environmental exposure and potential effects of PPCPs on biota and humans has aroused concern within the scientific community and the public. Risk assessments are commonly conducted to evaluate the likelihood of chemicals including PPCPs that pose health threats to organisms inhabiting various environmental compartments and humans. Because thousands of PPCPs are currently used, it is impractical to assess the environmental risk of all of them due to data limitations; in addition, new PPCPs are continually being produced. Prioritization approaches, based either on exposure, hazard, or risk, provide a possible means by which those PPCPs that are likely to pose the greatest risk to the environment are identified, thereby enabling more effective allocation of resources in environmental monitoring programs in specific geographical locations and ecotoxicological investigations. In the present review, the importance and current knowledge concerning PPCP occurrence and risk are discussed and priorities for future research are proposed, in terms of PPCP exposure (e.g., optimization of exposure modeling in freshwater ecosystems and more monitoring of PPCPs in the marine environment) or hazard (e.g., differential risk of PPCPs to lower vs. higher trophic level species and risks to human health). Source, transport, and toxicity of emerging contaminants in aquatic environments: A review on recent studies

Emerging contaminants (ECs) are gaining global attention owing to their widespread presence and adverse effects on human health. ECs comprise numerous composite types and pose a potential threat to the growth and functional traits of species and ecosystems. Although the occurrence and fate of ECs has been extensively studied, little is known about their long-term biological effects. This review attempts to gain insights into the unhindered connections and overlaps in aquatic ecosystems. Microplastics (MPs), one of the most representative ECs, are carriers of other pollutants because of their strong adsorption capacity. They form a complex of pollutants that can be transmitted to aquatic organisms and humans through the extended food chain, increasing the concentration of pollutants by tens of thousands of times. Adsorption, interaction and transport effects of emerging contaminants in the aquatic environment are also discussed. Furthermore, the current state of knowledge on the ecotoxicity of single- and two-pollutant models is presented. Herein, we discuss how aquatic organisms within complex food networks may be particularly vulnerable to harm from ECs in the presence of perturbations. This review provides an advanced understanding of the interactions and potential toxic effects of ECs on aquatic organisms.

Recent advances in microbial engineering approaches for wastewater treatment: a review

In the present era of global climate change, the scarcity of potable water is increasing both due to natural and anthropogenic causes. Water is the elixir of life, and its usage has risen significantly due to escalating economic activities, widespread urbanization, and industrialization. The increasing water scarcity and rising contamination have compelled, scientists and researchers, to adopt feasible and sustainable wastewater treatment methods in meeting the growing demand for freshwater. Presently, various waste treatment technologies are adopted across the globe, such as physical, chemical, and biological treatment processes. There is a need to replace these technologies with sustainable and green technology that encourages the use of microorganisms since they have proven to be more effective in water treatment processes. The present review article is focused on demonstrating how effectively various microbes can be used in wastewater treatment to achieve environmental sustainability and economic feasibility. The microbial consortium used for water treatment offers many advantages over pure culture. There is an urgent need to develop hybrid treatment technology for the effective remediation of various organic and inorganic pollutants from wastewater.

Emerging micropollutants in aquatic ecosystems and nanotechnology-based removal alternatives: A review

There is a significant concern about the accessibility of uncontaminated and safe drinking water, a fundamental necessity for human beings. This concern is attributed to the toxic micropollutants from several emission sources, including industrial toxins, agricultural runoff, wastewater discharges, sewer overflows, landfills, algal blooms and microbiota. Emerging micropollutants (EMs) encompass a broad spectrum of compounds, including pharmaceutically active chemicals, personal care products, pesticides, industrial chemicals, steroid hormones, toxic nanomaterials, microplastics, heavy metals, and microorganisms. The pervasive and enduring nature of EMs has resulted in a detrimental impact on global urban water systems. Of late, these contaminants are receiving more attention due to their inherent potential to generate environmental toxicity and adverse health effects on humans and aquatic life. Although little progress has been made in discovering removal methodologies for EMs, a basic categorization procedure is required to identify and restrict the EMs to tackle the problem of these emerging contaminants. The present review paper provides a crude classification of EMs and their associated negative impact on aquatic life. Furthermore, it delves into various nanotechnology-based approaches as effective solutions to address the challenge of removing EMs from water, thereby ensuring potable drinking water. To conclude, this review paper addresses the challenges associated with the commercialization of nanomaterial, such as toxicity, high cost, inadequate government policies, and incompatibility with the present water purification system and recommends crucial directions for further research that should be pursued.

Rapid analysis of pharmaceutical and personal care products by soft microwave-based plasma ionization-linear ion trap mass spectrometer (SMPI-LTQ) in natural water

In this study, a soft microwave plasma torch (SMPT) combined with a mass spectrometer (MS) was used for the first time as an analytical method to detect and analyze various pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments without the need for sample pretreatment. For this purpose, ambient SMPT was used to generate plasma for ionizing the analyte molecules. Accordingly, nine PPCPs were identified by the SMPT-MS, and their identification was verified by collision-induced dissociation (CID). The technique's performance was verified with known PPCP samples, and the limits of detection (LOD) and quantification (LOQ) obtained over a linear range of 50-1 μg/L were 1.56 to 2.81 and 2.07 to 3.62 μg/L, respectively, with the standard addition recovery rate falling between 87.14 and 115.16%. These results show that the method has excellent sensitivity and selectivity, suggesting that SMPT can rapidly and directly detect PPCPs in environmental water, making it a promising method for rapid water quality inspection.

Exploiting fungi in bioremediation for cleaning-up emerging pollutants in aquatic ecosystems

Aquatic pollution negatively affects water bodies, marine ecosystems, public health, and economy. Restoration of contaminated habitats has attracted global interest since protecting the health of marine ecosystems is crucial. Bioremediation is a cost-effective and eco-friendly way of transforming hazardous, resistant contaminants into environmentally benign products using diverse biological treatments. Because of their robust morphology and broad metabolic capabilities, fungi play an important role in bioremediation. This review summarizes the features employed by aquatic fungi for detoxification and subsequent bioremediation of different toxic and recalcitrant compounds in aquatic ecosystems. It also details how mycoremediation may convert chemically-suspended matters, microbial, nutritional, and oxygen-depleting aquatic contaminants into ecologically less hazardous products using multiple modes of action. Mycoremediation can also be considered in future research studies on aquatic, including marine, ecosystems as a possible tool for sustainable management, providing a foundation for selecting and utilizing fungi either independently or in microbial consortia.

Microbial degradation and transformation of PPCPs in aquatic environment: A review

The Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) presence at harmful levels has been identified in aquatic ecosystems all over the world. Currently, PPCPs are more common in aquatic regions and have been discovered to be extremely harmful to aquatic creatures. Waste-water treatment facilities are the primary cause of PPCPs pollution in aquatic systems due to their limited treatment as well as the following the release of PPCPs. The degree of PPCPs elimination is primarily determined by the method applied for the remediation. It must be addressed in an eco-friendly manner in order to significantly improve the environmental quality or, at the very least, to prevent the spread as well as effects of toxic pollutants. However, when compared to other methods, environmentally friendly strategies (biological methods) are less expensive and require less energy. Most biological methods under aerobic conditions have been shown to degrade PPCPs effectively. Furthermore, the scientific literature indicates that with the exception of a few extremely hydrophobic substances, biological degradation by microbes is the primary process for the majority of PPCPs compounds. Hence, this review discusses about the optimistic role of microbe concerned in the degradation or transformation of PPCPs into non/less toxic form in the polluted environment. Accordingly, more number of microbial strains has been implicated in the biodegradation/transformation of harmful PPCPs through a process termed as bioremediation and their limitations.

The potential of fungi in the bioremediation of pharmaceutically active compounds: a comprehensive review

The ability of fungal species to produce a wide range of enzymes and metabolites, which act synergistically, makes them valuable tools in bioremediation, especially in the removal of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) from contaminated environments. PhACs are compounds that have been specifically designed to treat or alter animal physiological conditions and they include antibiotics, analgesics, hormones, and steroids. Their detrimental effects on all life forms have become a source of public outcry due their persistent nature and their uncontrolled discharge into various wastewater effluents, hospital effluents, and surface waters. Studies have however shown that fungi have the necessary metabolic machinery to degrade PhACs in complex environments, such as soil and water, in addition they can be utilized in bioreactor systems to remove PhACs. In this regard, this review highlights fungal species with immense potential in the biodegradation of PhACs, their enzymatic arsenal as well as the probable mechanism of biodegradation. The challenges encumbering the real-time application of this promising bioremediative approach are also highlighted, as well as the areas of improvement and future perspective. In all, this paper points researchers to the fact that fungal bioremediation is a promising strategy for addressing the growing issue of pharmaceutical contamination in the environment and can help to mitigate the negative impacts on ecosystems and human health.

Effects of High Pharmaceutical Concentrations in Domestic Wastewater on Membrane Bioreactor Treatment Systems: Performance and Microbial Community

Despite pharmaceuticals being widely detected in water-bodies worldwide, what remain unclear are the effects of high pharmaceutical concentrations on the treatment efficiency of biological wastewater treatment processes, such as membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems. This study investigated the efficiency of MBR technology in the treatment of synthetic wastewater containing a mixture of five typical pharmaceuticals (ofloxacin, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethylthiadiazole, carbamazepine and naproxen) with a total concentration of 500 µg/L. Both the control MBR (MBRc) without pharmaceutical dosing and the MBR operated with high influent pharmaceutical concentrations (MBRe) were operated under room temperature with the same hydraulic retention time of 11 h and the same sludge retention time of 30 d. The removal efficiency rates of total nitrogen and total phosphorus were 83.2% vs. 90.1% and 72.6% vs. 57.8% in the MBRc vs. MBRe systems, and both MBRs achieved >98% removal of organics for a 180-day period. The floc size decreased, and membrane fouling became more severe in the MBRe system. Microbial diversity increased in the MBRe system and the relative abundances of functional microbe differed between the two MBRs. Furthermore, the total relative abundances of genes involved in glycolysis, assimilating nitrate reduction and nitrification processes increased in the MBRe system, which could account for the higher organics and nitrogen removal performance. This work provides insights for MBR operation in wastewater treatment with high pharmaceutical concentrations.

Nanobiohybrids: Synthesis strategies and environmental applications from micropollutants sensing and removal to global warming mitigation

Micropollutants contamination and global warming are critical environmental issues that require urgent attention due to natural and anthropogenic activities posing serious threats to human health and ecosystems. However, traditional technologies (such as adsorption, precipitation, biodegradation, and membrane separation et al.) are facing challenges of low utilization efficiency of oxidants, poor selectivity, and complex in-situ monitoring operations. To address these technical bottlenecks, nanobiohybrids, synthesized by interfacing the nanomaterials and biosystems, have recently emerged as eco-friendly technologies. In this review, we summarize the synthesis approaches of nanobiohybrids and their utilization as emerging environmental technologies for addressing environmental problems. Studies demonstrate that enzymes, cells, and living plants can be integrated with a wide range of nanomaterials including reticular frameworks, semiconductor nanoparticles and single-walled carbon nanotubes. Moreover, nanobiohybrids demonstrate excellent performance for micropollutant removal, carbon dioxide conversion, and sensing of toxic metal ions and organic micropollutants. Therefore, nanobiohybrids are expected to be environmental friendly, efficient, and cost-effective techniques for addressing environmental micropollutants issues and mitigating global warming, benefiting both humans and ecosystems alike.

A review on simultaneous heavy metal removal and organo-contaminants degradation by potential microbes: Current findings and future outlook

Industrial processes result in the production of heavy metals, dyes, pesticides, polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), pharmaceuticals, micropollutants, and PFAS (per- and polyfluorinated substances). Heavy metals are currently a significant problem in drinking water and other natural water bodies, including soil, which has an adverse impact on the environment as a whole. The heavy metal is highly poisonous, carcinogenic, mutagenic, and teratogenic to humans as well as other animals. Multiple polluted sites, including terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems, have been observed to co-occur with heavy metals and organo-pollutants. Pesticides and heavy metals can be degraded and removed concurrently from various metals and pesticide-contaminated matrixes due to microbial processes that include a variety of bacteria, both aerobic and anaerobic, as well as fungi. Numerous studies have examined the removal of heavy metals and organic-pollutants from different types of systems, but none of them have addressed the removal of these co-occurring heavy metals and organic pollutants and the use of microbes to do so. Therefore, the main focus of this review is on the recent developments in the concurrent microbial degradation of organo-pollutants and heavy metal removal. The limitations related to the simultaneous removal and degradation of heavy metals and organo-pollutant pollutants have also been taken into account.

A comprehensive review on the potential of microbial enzymes in multipollutant bioremediation: Mechanisms, challenges, and future prospects

Industrialization and other human activity represent significant environmental hazards. Toxic contaminants can harm a comprehensive platform of living organisms in their particular environments. Bioremediation is an effective remediation process in which harmful pollutants are eliminated from the environment using microorganisms or their enzymes. Microorganisms in the environment often create a variety of enzymes that can eliminate hazardous contaminants by using them as a substrate for development and growth. Through their catalytic reaction mechanism, microbial enzymes may degrade and eliminate harmful environmental pollutants and transform them into non-toxic forms. The principal types of microbial enzymes which can degrade most hazardous environmental contaminants include hydrolases, lipases, oxidoreductases, oxygenases, and laccases. Several immobilizations, genetic engineering strategies, and nanotechnology applications have been developed to improve enzyme performance and reduce pollution removal process costs. Until now, the practically applicable microbial enzymes from various microbial sources and their ability to degrade multipollutant effectively or transformation potential and mechanisms are unknown. Hence, more research and further studies are required. Additionally, there is a gap in the suitable approaches considering toxic multipollutants bioremediation using enzymatic applications. This review focused on the enzymatic elimination of harmful contaminants in the environment, such as dyes, polyaromatic hydrocarbons, plastics, heavy metals, and pesticides. Recent trends and future growth for effectively removing harmful contaminants by enzymatic degradation are also thoroughly discussed.

Linking pharmaceutical residues to dissolved organic matter and aquatic bacterial communities in a highly urbanized bay

Pharmaceuticals are causing environmental concerns associated with their widespread distribution in aquatic ecosystems. The environmental fate and behavior of pharmaceutical residues are related to dissolved organic matter and bacterial communities, both of which are strongly influenced by human activities. However, the relationships among pharmaceutical pollution, dissolved organic matter pool, and bacterial community structure under the pressure of human activities are still unclear, especially in highly urbanized bay areas. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of 35 pharmaceuticals in a typical urbanized bay (Hangzhou Bay) in Eastern China, and analyzed their relationships with dissolved organic matter and aquatic bacterial community structure. The target pharmaceuticals were ubiquitously detected in surface water samples, with their concentrations ranging from undetectable to 263 ng/L. The detected pharmaceuticals were mostly sulfonamides, macrolides, antidepressants, and metabolites of stimulants. Significant positive correlations were observed between the concentrations of pharmaceuticals and the intensity of human activities. Strong correlations also emerged between the concentration of antidepressants and the speed of urban expansion, as well as between the concentration of cardiovascular drugs and the population density or nightlight index. Three fluorescent components (protein-like C1, terrestrial humic-like C2, protein tryptophan-like C3) were significantly positively correlated with the total concentration of pharmaceuticals. Pharmaceutical pollution reshaped aquatic bacterial communities, based on the close correlation observed between pharmaceutical concentration and bacterial community structure. The results elucidate the potential dynamics of dissolved organic matter pool and aquatic bacterial communities in response to pharmaceutical pollution in urbanized bay ecosystems.

Catalytic oxidation activation of peroxymonosulfate over Fe-Co bimetallic oxides for flurbiprofen degradation

In this research, FeCo₂O₄ nanomaterial was successfully synthesized by a typical sol-gel method and conducted as an effective agent for peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation to eliminate antibiotics flurbiprofen (FLU), a strong nonsteroidal drug. FeCo₂O₄ nanomaterial was characterized by XRD, TEM, SEM, and XPS. Various characterization results proved that FeCo₂O₄ held stable spinel structure. The interfering factors including initial pH, PMS concentration, catalyst dosage, inorganic anions, and humic acid on FLU removal were also discussed. The conclusion was that the removal efficiency of FLU reached 98.2% within 120 min after adding FeCo₂O₄ (0.4 g L^-1) and PMS (3 mM). The optimal pH for FLU degradation was the initial pH of 6.5; too acidic or alkaline was not conductive to the degradation. The existence of HA and Cl^- restrained the degradation of FLU, and HCO₃^- promoted the removal, while the influence of NO₃^- and SO₄^2- could not be considered. The radical scavenging experiment confirmed that ^•OH, O₂^•-, and SO₄^•- participated in FLU removal and SO₄^•- functioned a leading role. FeCo₂O₄ showed high efficiency for PMS activation in pH range of 3.0 to 10.0. After the fourth cycle operation, the FLU removal rate exceeded 76.9%, and the Co leaching rate was low during the catalytic reaction. This study shows that FeCo₂O₄ nanomaterial is an efficient and environment-friendly catalyst, which can be applied for PMS activation to remove organic pollutants in water.

Engineered ball-milled colloidal activated carbon material for advanced oxidation process of ibuprofen: Influencing factors and insights into the mechanism

This study explores a simple and efficient, physically modified ball-milled activated carbon (AC_BM) preparation from granular activated carbon (GAC), which can be demonstrated for groundwater application. The colloidal stability of the AC_BM plays a vital role in the activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) and the degradation of pollutants. Adsorption kinetics and isotherm studies explain that the AC_BM has more active sites and maximum adsorption capacity (q_max = 509 mg g^-1) on the surface of the materials than GAC. The 92% of ibuprofen degradation was achieved at 240 min along with 0.1 g L^-1 of AC_BM, 5 mM of PMS, and 6.3 of initial solution pH. A chemical scavenger and electron spin resonance spectra also confirmed the formation of reactive oxygen species such as radicals (O₂^•-, HO^•, SO₄^•-) and non-radical (¹O₂) in the AC_BM/PMS system. Three major degradation pathways, hydroxylation, demethylation, and decarboxylation involved in ibuprofen degradation. Nearly 13 degradation by-products were detected during the AC_BM/PMS oxidation of ibuprofen. The toxicity analysis of oxidation by-products of ibuprofen was also discussed by computational simulation employing the ecological structure-activity relationships software. The AC_BM/PMS system was successfully applied to the natural groundwater system for ibuprofen degradation. Hence, the AC_BM/PMS system is an excellent catalyst for real groundwater applications.

Benzoyl isothiocyanate modified surface of silica gel as the extraction material for adsorbing steroid hormones in water

Steroid hormones have been listed as priority pollutants in the environment, and their detection and pollution control deserve our extensive attention. In this study, a modified silica gel adsorbent material was synthesized by benzoyl isothiocyanate reaction with hydroxyl groups on the silica gel surface. The modified silica gel was used as a solid phase extraction filler for the extraction of steroid hormones from water, which was further analyzed by the HPLC-MS/MS method. The FT-IR, TGA, XPS, and SEM analysis indicated that benzoyl isothiocyanate was successfully grafted on the surface of silica gel to form a bond with an isothioamide group and benzene ring as the tail chain. The modified silica gel synthesized at 40 °C showed excellent adsorption and recovery rates for three steroid hormones in water. Methanol at pH 9.0 was selected as the optimal eluent. The adsorption capacity of the modified silica gel for epiandrosterone, progesterone, and megestrol acetate was 6822 ng mg^-1, 13 899 ng mg^-1, and 14 301 ng mg^-1, respectively. Under optimal conditions, the limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantification (LOQ) for 3 steroid hormones by modified silica gel extraction with HPLC-MS/MS detection were 0.02-0.88 μg L^-1 and 0.06-2.22 μg L^-1, respectively. The recovery rate of epiandrosterone, progesterone, and megestrol was between 53.7% and 82.9%, respectively. The modified silica gel has been successfully used to analyze steroid hormones in wastewater and surface water.

Activation of peroxymonosulfate for degrading ibuprofen via single atom Cu anchored by carbon skeleton and chlorine atom: The radical and non-radical pathways

Single atomic Cu catalysts (SACs Cu@C) anchored by carbon skeleton and chlorine atom was synthesized by hydrolyzing Cu-MOFs and then pickled by aqua-regia to remove Cu nanoparticles (NPs Cu). Comparative characterizations revealed that SACs Cu@C was a hierarchically porous nanostructure and Cu dispersed uniformly throughout the carbon skeletons. With less active components, SACs Cu@C behaved better in activating PMS over NPs Cu@C on ibuprofen removal (91.3 % versus 30.2 % in 30 min). Two Cu coordination environments were found by EXAF and DFT calculation, including four-coordinated Cu with 4C atoms and six-coordinated Cu with 4Cu and 2Cl atoms. The obvious interfacial electron delivery between PMS and SACs Cu@C was found, which was enhanced by Cl atom. Cu(I)/Cu(II) redox cycle would donate electron to peroxy bond of PMS for generating OH, SO₄^- and O₂^-. But electron transferred in opposite direction when PMS bonded to Cu atom through its terminal oxygen atom in sulfate, which formed ¹O₂. IBP degradation proceeded through both radical and non-radical route. IBP degradation was inhibited with the presence of TBA, methanol and furfuryl alcohol but accelerated by p-BQ, which could accelerate OH generation. Two degradation pathways were deducted. This study provided a new insight into catalysts designed for PMS activation.

Nanofibrous/biopolymeric membrane a sustainable approach to remove organic micropollutants: A review

Aquifers are severely polluted with organic and inorganic pollutants, posing a serious threat to the global ecological system's balance. While various traditional methods are available, the development of innovative methods for effluent treatment and reuse is critical. Polymers have recently been widely used in a variety of industry sectors due to their unique properties. Biopolymers are a biodegradable material that is also a viable alternative to synthetic polymers. Biopolymers are preferably obtained from cellulose and carrageenan molecules from various biological sources. While compared with conventional non-biodegradable polymeric materials, the biopolymer possesses unique characteristics such as renewability, cost-effectiveness, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. The improvements towards the biopolymeric (natural) membranes have also been thoroughly discussed. The use of nanofillers to stabilise and improve the effectiveness of biopolymeric membranes in the elimination of organic pollutants is one of the most recent developments. This was discovered that the majority of biopolymeric membranes technology consolidated on organic pollutants. More research should be directed toward against emerging organic/persistent organic pollutants (POP) and micropollutants. Furthermore, processes for regenerating and reusing utilized biopolymer-based carbon - based materials are emphasized.

Sand and sand-GAC filtration technologies in removing PPCPs: A review

Concerns have been raised about the risks that pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic environments posed to humans and the environment. In recent years, sand filtration has been used to potentially remove these emerging contaminants from water. However, there has been no review of the effectiveness of this technology to date. This paper presents a brief introduction of sand filtration types, reviews the current progress in PPCPs removal through sand filtration, and discusses the mechanisms behind this process and the combination of granular activated carbon (GAC) and sand as an enhanced sand-GAC filtration technology. Sand filtration achieves a reasonable but highly variable degree of PPCPs removal. Biodegradation and adsorption are the two main mechanisms of PPCPs removal, in particular the biodegradation since adsorption capacity of sand is relatively low. Other processes, such as bio-sorption and indirect adsorption, may also contribute to PPCPs removal. To compensate for the inadequate PPCPs removal through sand filtration, porous GAC has been combined with sand to develop sand-GAC filtration technologies. Serial, dual, and sandwich filters have been investigated, and significant removal enhancement has been observed, due to the strengthened adsorption capacity, suggesting the applicability of these variants. Future research focus, such as investigating the influence of different operational conditions on sand filter performance, obtaining a deeper understanding of the various removal mechanisms, and investigating of long-term performance of the filter used for PPCPs removal, are suggested.

Impact of pharmaceutical products on zebrafish: An effective tool to assess aquatic pollution

Overuse of pharmaceuticals products (PPs) and sometimes ineffective wastewater purification systems have led to the accumulation of these residues in aquatic systems. Raising concerns about the likely harmful effects of these substances both to ecosystems and to human health. Animals as model organisms are nowadays increasingly used to track the health of environmental system around the world. They can be used to understand biological processes, to obtain information on the health status of the environment, and to better understand the effects of xenobiotics on organisms. Among model organisms, the zebrafish (Danio rerio) is one of the best models for studying evolution biology, cancer, toxicology, drug discovery, and genetics. This fish is a multipurpose model organism, due to its easy of maintenance and keeping and the transparency of the embryo during the early stages of development. In this paper, the toxicological effects of typical PPs, and their effects on zebrafish are reviewed. Many PPs have been found to be toxic or even fatal to zebrafish. Showing how these pharmaceuticals compound can affect zebrafish from the larval stage and even in the adult stage. Zebrafish is thus a model for how we can better understand how medications affect not only individual fish but the entire aquatic ecosystem, bringing about perturbations in their behaviour and putting their survival at risk.

Photodynamic inactivation of multidrug-resistant bacteria in wastewater effluent using green phytochemicals as a natural photosensitizer

The control of multidrug-resistant bacteria (MDRB) is a great challenge in the 21st century. Photodynamic treatment (PDT) is one of the promising approaches to control MDRB. In the process, powerful oxidants such as reactive oxygen species (ROS) are produced, which cause cytotoxic damage and cell death of bacteria. This study examined a new and environment-friendly strategy for the photodynamic inactivation of two MDRB (Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus) and total coliform (TC) in wastewater effluent using two phytochemicals, pyrogallol (PGL) and terpinolene (TPN), along with white and blue light-emitting diode (LED) light. Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) of the phytochemicals confirmed the presence of different phenolic and aromatic compounds, which can enhance the generation of ROS alongside inactivating the bacterial cells. In the PDT process, white LED light was more active in controlling MDRB than blue LED light. After 80 min irradiation with white LED light (17 mW/cm²), the MDRB bacteria were eradicated completely at a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) dose (0.156 mg/mL for E. coli and 0.078 mg/mL for S. aureus) of PGL. In addition, light intensity was an important parameter in photodynamic disinfection. The TC in the secondary effluent was inactivated completely by both phytochemicals after 60 min of exposure to white LED light with an intensity of 80 mW/cm². The photosensitizing activity of phytochemicals was analyzed by a bactericidal and imidazole-RNO assay. These assays showed that PGL contributed to the generation of •OH radicals, whereas TPN produced ¹O₂ in the PDT process. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed bacterial cell disruption after treatment. Overall, PDT using the phytochemicals as PS is a sustainable approach to control the MDRB and TC in wastewater successfully.

Pore creation nanoarchitectonics from non-porous metal-organic framework to porous carbon for adsorptive elimination of sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol from aqueous solution

Three isomeric metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) such as MAF-5, - 6, and - 32 (with the same composition of [Zn(2-ethylimidazole)₂]) were carbonized and, for the first time, activated further with KOH to prepare highly porous MOF-derived carbons (MDCs). Importantly, MDC-32 derived from non-porous MAF-32 had the highest porosity among the three MDCs although it has the lowest porosity when no KOH activation was done. Adsorption of sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol from water was investigated with the MDCs. Among the MDCs, MDC-32 showed the best adsorptive performance for sulfanilamide and chloroxylenol. Moreover, MDC-32, had the highest adsorption capacity (256 mg/g) for removing sulfanilamide from water, compared with any adsorbent reported so far. Based on the observed adsorption and properties of the adsorbate and adsorbent, π-π and hydrogen bonding interactions, with a slight contribution of repulsive electrostatic interaction, could be suggested as the mechanism for the sulfanilamide adsorption over the MDC-32. Moreover, the MDC-32 could be recycled easily for up to four cycles. It could be suggested that non-porous MOFs can be a good precursor for highly porous MDCs, if activated well using KOH, for example. Finally, MAF-32-derived carbon, MDC-32, might be suggested as a plausible adsorbent to eliminate organics such as sulfanilamide from water.

Bioremediation competence of Aspergillus flavus DDN on pond water contaminated by mining activities

This research was performed to evaluate the possibilities of reducing the physicochemical properties of polluted pond water situated around the magnesite mine tailing through indigenous metal tolerant fungi. The physicochemical analysis results revealed that most of the physicochemical properties of pond water sample were crossing the permissible limits. From the muddy pond soil sample, Aspergillus flavus DDN was identified (through molecular characterization) as predominant metal tolerant fungal strain and it showed resistance to Cr(VI), Pb(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Mg(IV) up to 1000 μg mL^-1 concentrations. This strain also effectively reduced (through biosorption) these metals in a short duration of the bioremediation process. In a lab-scale bioremediation study, the A. flavus DDN significantly reduced most of the physicochemical parameters crossing the permissible limit in polluted pond water in the presence of FM1 minimal media in 10 days of incubation. The dissolved oxygen level was significantly increased up to 74.91% from 5.86 ± 0.39 to 10.25 ± 0.95 in 10 days of treatment. The metal reduction and other physicochemical properties reduction were directly related to the biomass of A. flavus DDN. These findings suggest that A. flavus DDN can remove pollutants from magnesite mine tailing polluted pond water because elevated fungal biomass resulted in the highest percentage of pollutant reduction from the sample.

Sustainable bioremediation approach to treat the sago industry effluents and evaluate the possibility of yielded biomass as a single cell protein (SCP) using cyanide tolerant Streptomyces tritici D5

This sustainable approach was performed to evaluate the bioremediation potential of cyanide resistant bacterial species on sago industry effluents and assess the possibility of using the yielded biomass as single cell protein (SCP). The predominant cyanide tolerant bacterium enumerated from muddy soil was identified as Streptomyces tritici D5 through 16S rRNA sequencing. The identified S. tritici D5 strains showed excellent resistant and degradation potential at 100 mM concentration of potassium cyanide. Furthermore, the physicochemical properties analysis of sago industry effluents results revealed that the most of the parameters were crossing the permissible limits of Pollution control board of India. The bioremediation process was performed at various temperatures at 25 °C, 35 °C, and 45 °C for a period of 30 days of continuous bioremediation process with the aid of an aerator. Surprisingly, the best organic pollutant reduction was found at 35 °C and 45 °C, with 25 °C following close behind. Remarkably, the dissolved oxygen (DO) level was gradually increased from 2.24 to 12.04 mg L^-1 at 35 °C in 30 days of the remediation process. The pH and ammonia were also significantly increased during the bioremediation process in 30 days of treatment. Similarly, at 35 °C of bioremediation process the S. tritici D5 yielded maximum dried biomass (6.9 g L^-1) with the total crude protein (SCP) as 4.8 g L^-1 (69.56%) in 30 days of growth. These findings stated that S. tritici D5 can treat sago industry effluents and that the biomass produced may be considered SCP after some in-vitro and in-vivo analyses.

Construction of Z-scheme Ag-AgBr/Bi2O2CO3/CNT heterojunctions with remarkable photocatalytic performance using carbon nanotubes as efficient electronic mediators

It is a useful strategy to use a solid electronic mediator with good conductivity to assist the separation of semiconductor photo-induced electron-hole pairs and the redox of semiconductor materials. In order to construct a photocatalyst for more efficient photocatalytic degradation of antibiotics, a simple hydrothermal and precipitation method was used to construct the Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT Z-scheme heterojunction by using carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as electronic mediators. Compared with the pristine AgBr, Bi₂O₂CO₃, Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT, the 30%Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT photocatalyst has better photocatalytic activity under visible light irradiation, showing the best degradation ability to tetracycline (TC). Meanwhile, the photocatalytic properties of 30%Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT in different pH and inorganic ions were studied. Finally, the degradation pathway and catalytic mechanism of 30%Ag-AgBr/Bi₂O₂CO₃/CNT photocatalytic degradation of TC were also argued. The construction of the Z-scheme electron transport pathway, in which CNTs were used as electronic mediators, and the SPR effect of Ag and Bi metal, which enable the effective separation and transfer of photo-generated electron-hole pairs, are responsible for the significant improvement in photocatalytic performance. It opens up new possibilities for designing and developing high-efficiency photocatalysts with CNTs as the electronic mediator.

High-Throughput Microbial Community Analyses to Establish a Natural Fungal and Bacterial Consortium from Sewage Sludge Enriched with Three Pharmaceutical Compounds

Emerging and unregulated contaminants end up in soils via stabilized/composted sewage sludges, paired with possible risks associated with the development of microbial resistance to antimicrobial agents or an imbalance in the microbial communities. An enrichment experiment was performed, fortifying the sewage sludge with carbamazepine, ketoprofen and diclofenac as model compounds, with the aim to obtain strains with the capability to transform these pollutants. Culturable microorganisms were obtained at the end of the experiment. Among fungi, Cladosporium cladosporioides, Alternaria alternata and Penicillium raistrickii showed remarkable degradation rates. Population shifts in bacterial and fungal communities were also studied during the selective pressure using Illumina MiSeq. These analyses showed a predominance of Ascomycota (Dothideomycetes and Aspergillaceae) and Actinobacteria and Proteobacteria, suggesting the possibility of selecting native microorganisms to carry out bioremediation processes using tailored techniques.

Peroxymonosulphate Activation by Basolite® F-300 for Escherichia coli Disinfection and Antipyrine Degradation

In this study, the removal of persistent emerging and dangerous pollutants (pharmaceuticals and pathogens) in synthetic wastewater was evaluated by the application of heterogeneous Advanced Oxidation Processes. To do that, a Metal-Organic Framework (MOF), Basolite® F-300 was selected as a catalyst and combined with peroxymonosulfate (PMS) as oxidants in order to generate sulphate radicals. Several key parameters such as the PMS and Basolite® F-300 concentration were evaluated and optimized using a Central Composite Experimental Design for response surface methodology for the inactivation of Escherichia coli. The assessment of the degradation of an analgesic and antipyretic pharmaceutical, antipyrine, revealed that is necessary to increase the concentration of PMS and amount of Basolite® F-300, in order to diminish the treatment time. Finally, the PMS-Basolite® F-300 system can be used for at least four cycles without a reduction in its ability to disinfect and degrade persistent emerging and dangerous pollutants such as pharmaceuticals and pathogens.

Recent Advances of Emerging Organic Pollutants Degradation in Environment by Non-Thermal Plasma Technology: A Review

Emerging organic pollutants (EOPs), including endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs), pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), and persistent organic pollutants (POPs), constitute a problem in the environmental field as they are difficult to completely degrade by conventional treatment methods. Non-thermal plasma technology is a novel advanced oxidation process, which combines the effects of free radical oxidation, ozone oxidation, ultraviolet radiation, shockwave, etc. This paper summarized and discussed the research progress of non-thermal plasma remediation of EOPs-contaminated water and soil. In addition, the reactive species in the process of non-thermal plasma degradation of EOPs were summarized, and the degradation pathways and degradation mechanisms of EOPs were evaluated of selected EOPs for different study cases. At the same time, the effect of non-thermal plasma in synergy with other techniques on the degradation of EOPs in the environment was evaluated. Finally, the bottleneck problems of non-thermal plasma technology are summarized, and some suggestions for the future development of non-thermal plasma technology in the environmental remediation were presented. This review contributes to our better understanding of non-thermal plasma technology for remediation of EOPs-contaminated water and soil, hoping to provide reference for relevant practitioners.
