Using hair and fingernails in binary logistic regression for bio-monitoring of heavy metals/metalloid in groundwater in intensively agricultural areas, Thailand

Toxic element (As, Cd, Pb and Hg) biodistribution and blood biomarkers in Barbaresca sheep raised in Sicily: One Health preliminary study

The health of humans, animals and the environment is interconnected. Adopting a One Health approach means intervening promptly to prevent the main diseases that affect animal health to guarantee the safety of livestock production. Exposure to toxic trace elements in sheep can lead to increased accumulation in different biological substrate, developing both acute and chronic diseases in humans and livestock. The aim of this study was to evaluate the bioaccumulation of arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb) and mercury (Hg) in Sicilian Barbaresca sheep using the following biological substrates: milk, blood and fleece. An inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometer (ICP-MS) was used for As, Cd and Pb, and a direct mercury analyser (DMA-80) was used for Hg determination. In addition, the role of the haematological parameters as possible indicators of different biodistribution was evaluated. A statistically significant value was observed from our analysed metals in the substrates: arsenic (p < 0.001), cadmium (p < 0.01), lead (p < 0.001) and mercury (p < 0.0001). The correlation analysis showed a relationship between milk and blood for arsenic (p < 0.0001) and lead (p < 0.0001), and no correlation for the metals was observed between milk/blood and the haematological parameters analysed for the low concentration observed in the present study comforting the final consumer.

Assessing Acute and Chronic Risks of Human Exposure to Arsenic: A Cross-Sectional Study in Ethiopia Employing Body Biomarkers

Background

Arsenic, a widely recognized and highly toxic carcinogen, is regarded as one of the most hazardous metalloids globally. However, the precise assessment of acute and chronic human exposure to arsenic and its contributing factors remains unclear in Ethiopia.

Objective

The primary goal of this study was to assess the levels of acute and chronic arsenic exposure, as well as the contributing factors, using urine and nail biomarkers.

Methods

A community-based analytical cross-sectional study design was employed for this study. Agilent 7900 series inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry was used to measure the concentrations of arsenic in urine and nail samples. We performed a multiple linear regression analysis to assess the relationships between multiple predictors and outcome variables.

Results

The concentration of arsenic in the urine samples ranged from undetectable (<0.01) to 126.13, with a mean and median concentration of 16.02 and 13.5 μg/L, respectively. However, the mean and median concentration of arsenic in the nails was 1.01, ranging from undetectable (<0.01 μg/g) to 2.54 μg/g. Furthermore, Pearson's correlation coefficient analysis showed a significant positive correlation between arsenic concentrations in urine and nail samples (r = 0.432, P < .001). Also, a positive correlation was observed between urinary (r = 0.21, P = .007) and nail (r = 0.14, P = .044) arsenic concentrations and the arsenic concentration in groundwater. Groundwater sources and smoking cigarettes were significantly associated with acute arsenic exposure. In contrast, groundwater sources, cigarette smoking, and the frequency of showers were significantly associated with chronic arsenic exposure.

Conclusions

The study's findings unveiled the widespread occurrence of both acute and chronic arsenic exposure in the study area. Consequently, it is crucial to prioritize the residents in the study area and take further measures to prevent both acute and chronic arsenic exposure.

Association between lead and circulating markers of inflammation among traffic enforcers in Metro Manila, Philippines: the MMDA traffic enforcer's health study

PURPOSE

Several epidemiological studies have linked lead (Pb) exposure to induced oxidative stress and the promotion of inflammatory response. We performed a within-subjects study (repeated measures study) to evaluate the relationship between the concentration of blood lead (B-Pb) and toenail lead (T-Pb) and circulating markers of inflammation.

METHODS

We evaluated the associations between B-Pb concentrations and T-Pb concentrations and circulating markers of inflammation, soluble intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (s-ICAM-1), soluble vascular adhesion molecule-1 (s-VCAM-1), and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) on 158 traffic enforcers from the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic enforcer's health study. Linear mixed-effects models with random subject-specific intercepts were fitted to estimate the association between B-Pb and T-Pb exposure and circulating markers of inflammation, adjusting for confounding factors.

RESULTS

Traffic enforcers were middle-aged men (89.4%) with a mean age (± SD) of 37.1 years ± 8.9 years and had a total of 293 valid markers of inflammation measurements. B-Pb concentration was related to increased hs-CRP levels. A 10% increase in B-Pb was associated with a 5.7% increase in hs-CRP level [95% confidence interval (95% CI): 1.3-10.1]. However, B-Pb was not associated with s-ICAM-1 and s-VCAM-1. Furthermore, no associations were observed between T-Pb and all the circulating markers of inflammation.

CONCLUSIONS

Low-level B-Pb may increase hs-CRP among traffic enforcers. Moreover, the study suggests that Pb via the oxidative and inflammation pathways may have an essential role in the development of cardiovascular disease. Furthermore, MMDA and the Department of Labor and Employment can use our study's findings as evidence to conduct routine screening of blood heavy metals, especially Pb, among MMDA and other traffic enforcers as part of their yearly medical examination.

Biomonitoring of exposure to multiple metal components in urine, hair and nails of apprentice welders performing shielded metal arc welding (SMAW)

Welding fumes are associated with various diseases. Increased air levels of metals were reported during welding. However, few multielement biomonitoring studies were conducted to assess the actual dose of metal components absorbed in apprentice welders in a learning environment. This research aimed to establish the nature and level of exposure to welding fumes and their metallic components in apprentice welders performing 'Shielded Metal Arc Welding' (SMAW), based on multi-element and multi-matrix analyses. A total of 86 apprentice welders were recruited in three different schools in Montreal, Québec, Canada. Twenty-one elements were measured in urine, hair, fingernail, and toenail samples collected at the beginning of the program and at the end of SMAW practical training. Concentrations of welding fumes and 12 metals were also determined in personal respirable air samples collected over a typical workday in a subgroup of 19 apprentices. Levels of manganese (Mn), iron (Fe) and nickel (Ni) in urine and Mn in hair were higher in samples taken at the end of the SMAW module compared to the beginning of training, while there was no significant difference for the other elements or for nail concentrations. Assessment and Exposure Analysis of Trace Metals in Different Age Groups of the Male Population in Southern Punjab, Pakistan

In developing countries, like Pakistan, the pursuit of urbanization and economic development disrupts the delicate ecosystem, resulting in additional biogeochemical emissions of heavy metals into the human habitat and posing significant health risks. The levels of these trace elements in humans remain unknown in areas at higher risk of pollution in Pakistan. In this investigation, selected trace metals including Copper (Cu), Chromium (Cr), Lead (Pb) Cadmium (Cd), Cobalt (Co), Nickel (Ni), and Arsenic (As) were examined in human hair, urine, and nail samples of different age groups from three major cities (Muzaffargarh, Multan, and Vehari) in Punjab province, Pakistan. The results revealed that the mean concentrations (ppm) of Cr (1.1) and Cu (9.1) in hair was highest in Muzaffargarh. In urine samples, the mean concentrations (μg/L) of Co (93), As (79), Cu (69), Cr (56), Ni (49), Cd (45), and Pb (35) were highest in the Multan region, while As (34) and Cr (26) were highest in Vehari. The mean concentrations (ppm) of Ni (9.2), Cr (5.6), and Pb (2.8), in nail samples were highest in Vehari; however, Multan had the highest Cu (28) concentration (ppm). In urine samples, the concentrations of all the studied metals were within permissible limits except for As (34 µg/L) and Cr (26 µg/L) in Vehari. However, in nail samples, the concentrations of Ni in Multan (8.1 ppm), Muzaffargarh (9 ppm), Vehari (9.2 ppm), and Cd (3.69 ppm) in Muzaffargarh exceeded permissible limits. Overall, the concentrations of metals in urine, nail, and hair samples were higher in adults (39-45 age group). Cr, Cu, and Ni revealed significantly higher concentrations of metals in hair and water in Multan, whereas As in water was significantly (p < 0.001) correlated with urinary As in Multan, indicating that the exposure source was region-specific.

Association between living environmental quality and risk of arthritis in middle-aged and older adults: a national study in China

Background

The association between combined environmental factors and the risk of arthritis is still scarcely studied. The present study performed cross-sectional and cohort studies to explore the association between risk score of living environment quality and the risk of arthritis in middle-aged and older adults in China.

Methods

The study was based on China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS), and it recruited 17,218 participants in the cross-sectional study and 11,242 participants in the seven-year follow-up study. The living environment quality was measured by household fuel types, household water sources, room temperature, residence types, and ambient concentration of PM2.5. Logistic regression and Cox proportional hazard regression models were utilized to examine the association between the living environment quality and the risk of arthritis. Competing risk models and stratified analyses were applied to further verify our results.

Results

Compared with individuals in the suitable environment group, people who lived in moderate (OR:1.28, 95%CI: 1.14-1.43) and unfavorable environments (OR:1.49, 95%CI:1.31-1.70) showed higher risks of arthritis when considering the multiple living environmental factors (P for trend <0.001) in the cross-sectional analysis. In the follow-up study, similar results (P for trend = 0.021), moderate environment group (HR:1.26, 95%CI:1.01-1.56) and unfavorable environment group (HR: 1.36, 95%CI: 1.07-1.74), were founded.

Conclusion

Inferior living environment might promote the development of arthritis. It is necessary for the public, especially old people, to improve the living environment, which may be the key to the primary prevention of arthritis.

Heavy metals in paired samples of hair and nails in China: occurrence, sources and health risk assessment

The occurrence of heavy metals including chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd) and lead (Pb) was investigated in paired samples of hair and nails collected from 121 volunteers in 16 cities, China. Results showed that the mean concentrations of Zn, Cu, As, Pb, Cr, Ni and Cd were 205, 18.0, 7.79, 6.18, 3.54, 2.02, 0.533 μg g^-1 in hair and 103, 8.09, 0.760, 7.27, 6.07, 8.81, 0.485 μg g^-1 in nails, respectively. The concentrations of Zn, Ni, Cr, Cd and Pb were positively correlated in paired samples of hair and nails, whereas a negative correlation was found for Cu and As between hair and nails. Higher concentrations of heavy metals were found in northern China than southern China. The multivariate analysis of variance revealed that dwelling environment was the dominant factor influencing the levels of Cd in hair (p < 0.05), while age was the dominant factor influencing the levels of Cr in nails (p < 0.05). Moreover, industrial pollution and smoking were also the important factors leading to the accumulation of heavy metals in human body. Principal component analysis (PCA) showed that industrial pollution and decoration material immersion were the main factors for the high concentrations of Cr and Ni in hair, accounting for 62.9% of the total variation; As in hair was dominantly related to groundwater pollution. The concentrations of heavy metals were within the recommended ranges in nails from this study. However, the mean levels of Cr, Ni and As in hair exceeded their recommended reference values, indicating potential health risks from heavy metals for residents in China.

Significance of the prime factors regulating arsenic toxicity and associated health risk: a hypothesis-based investigation in a critically exposed population of West Bengal, India

The suffering from arsenic toxicity is a long-standing concern in Asian countries. The role of the key factors (arsenic intake, age and sex) regulating arsenic toxicity is aimed to evaluate for a severely exposed population from Murshidabad district, West Bengal. Mean arsenic concentrations in drinking water supplied through tube well, Sajaldhara treatment plant and pipeline were observed as 208, 27 and 54 µg/l, respectively. Urinary arsenic concentration had been observed as < 3-42.1, < 3-56.2 and < 3-80 µg/l in children, teenagers and adults, respectively. Mean concentrations of hair and nail arsenic were found to be 0.84 and 2.38 mg/kg; 3.07 and 6.18 mg/kg; and 4.41 and 9.07 mg/kg, respectively, for the studied age-groups. Water arsenic was found to be associated with hair and nail (r = 0.57 and 0.60), higher than urine (r = 0.37). Arsenic deposition in biomarkers appeared to be dependent on age; however, it is independent of sex. Principal component analysis showed a direct relationship between dietary intake of arsenic and chronic biomarkers. Nail was proved as the most fitted biomarker of arsenic toxicity by Dunn's post hoc test. Monte Carlo sensitivity analysis and cluster analysis showed that the most significant factor regulating health risk is 'concentration of arsenic' than 'exposure duration', 'body weight' and 'intake rate'. The contribution of arsenic concentration towards calculated health risk was highest in teenagers (45.5-61.2%), followed by adults (47.8-49%) and children (21-27.6%). Regular and sufficient access to arsenic-safe drinking water is an immediate need for the affected population.

A combined method for human health risk area identification of heavy metals in urban environments

Multi-medium heavy metals pollution is a crucial pathway to destroy the urban environmental resources cycle. In this study, Nanjing of China, a typical mega city, was taken as the study area. Compared with other cities or countries, Cr, Cu and Zn in human nails and hair in the study area have higher concentration characteristics, while Cd and Pb have lower concentration characteristics. By combining the health risk status of heavy metals in soil and dustfall, the spatial clustering characteristics of heavy metals in soil dustfall and the concentration information of heavy metals in humans in the study area, a potential toxic risk area identification method based on soil-dustfall-human (SDB-HR) was established. Through Monte Carlo analysis, it's found that the risk of Zn and Cr in soil-dustfall to human health is relatively high, with the probability of carcinogenesis reaching 51.2 % and 50.2 %, respectively. By the proposed method, different levels of heavy metal risk areas in urban environments can be more reasonably and effectively identified, which will provide important technical and theoretical support for the precise management of heavy metals in urban environments.

Survey to identify the metal accumulation pathway in humans using hair and nail as biomarkers from fisherfolk population

Human hair and nail samples from Cuddalore fisherfolk populations were used as biomarkers for assessing metal concentrations in humans. Hair samples from 80 participants (47 men and 33 women) and nail samples from 40 participants (21 men and 19 women) were collected, and the concentrations of Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn were assessed using an atomic absorption spectrophotometer (AAS). Metal data from AAS were compared with the survey questionnaire's personal and dietary parameters. Results indicate that both personal and dietary parameters may influence metal exposure; however, majority of the sources may have originated from metal-contaminated seafood. Higher metal accumulation in communities, especially those which consume seafood on a daily basis, may increase the possibility for them to get affected by metal-related diseases. Based on environmental parameters, people who live ≤500 m from industrial zones accumulate more metals. Further extensive studies with more individuals and more questionnaire parameters are needed to identify the metal accumulation pathway in humans.

The risk assessment of arsenic contamination in the urbanized coastal aquifer of Rayong groundwater basin, Thailand using the machine learning approach

The rapid expansion of urbanization has resulted in an insufficient of groundwater resource. In order to use groundwater more efficiently, a risk assessment of groundwater pollution should be proposed. The present study used machine learning with three algorithms consisting of Random Forest (RF), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Artificial Neural Network (ANN) to locate risk areas of arsenic contamination in Rayong coastal aquifers, Thailand and selected the suitable model based on model performance and uncertainty for risk assessment. The parameters of 653 groundwater wells (Deep=236, Shallow=417) were selected based on the correlation of each hydrochemical parameters with arsenic concentration in deep and shallow aquifer environments. The models were validated with arsenic concentration collected from 27 well data in the field. The model's performance indicated that the RF algorithm has the highest performance as compared to those of SVM and ANN in both deep and shallow aquifers (Deep: AUC=0.72, Recall=0.61, F1 =0.69; Shallow: AUC=0.81, Recall=0.79, F1 =0.68). In addition, the uncertainty from the quantile regression of each model confirmed that the RF algorithm has the lowest uncertainty (Deep: PICP=0.20; Shallow: PICP=0.34). The result of the risk map obtained from the RF reveals that the deep aquifer, in the northern part of the Rayong basin has a higher risk for people to expose to As. In contrast, the shallow aquifer revealed that the southern part of the basin has a higher risk, which is also supported by the location of the landfill and industrial estates in the area. Therefore, health surveillance is important in monitoring the toxic effects on the residents who use groundwater from these contaminated wells. The outcome of this study can help policymakers in regions to manage the quality of groundwater resources and enhance the sustainable use of groundwater resources. The novelty process of this research can be used to further study other groundwater aquifers contaminated and increase the effectiveness of groundwater quality management.

Trace Element Levels in Nails of Residents of Addis Ababa Are Shaped by Social Factors and Geography

The Akaki catchment in Ethiopia is home to Addis Ababa and about five million people. Its watercourses receive a variety of wastes released by the residents and industries. River water is being used for irrigation, livestock watering, and other domestic purposes. This study tested the hypothesis that the river pollution would be reflected in higher levels of trace elements in the nails of residents living in Akaki-Kality Sub-City in the downstream, as compared to those living in Gullele Sub-City in the upstream of the Akaki catchment. Samples were taken and subsequently analysed for metals using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The mean concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Ni, Cr, Pb, and As in nails from Akaki-Kality were 488 ± 49, 106 ± 10, 5.2 ± 0.3, 13 ± 1.5, 11 ± 8, 2.2 ± 0.3, 0.09 ± 0.01, and 0.16 ± 0.01 μg/g, respectively. Likewise, the concentrations of Fe, Zn, Cu, Mn, Ni, Cr, Pb, and As in nails from Gullele were 1035 ± 135, 251 ± 10, 6.6 ± 0.4, 31 ± 3.7, 7.4 ± 1.7, 2.0 ± 0.3, 0.63 ± 0.01, and 0.25 ± 0.01 μg/g, respectively. Co and Cd were not detected. Contrary to the initial hypothesis, higher metal levels were found in nails of residents living in the upstream rather than the downstream area of the catchment. In particular, the concentrations of Fe (p = 0.000), Zn (p = 0.01), and Mn (p = 0.000) were significantly elevated in nails from Gullele and also high in comparison with internationally reported values. Besides, geography and social factors, especially education level, correlated to trace metals in nails. Most of the elements were significantly lower in the nails of individuals with a university degree compared to those who were illiterate or only completed primary school.

Potentially toxic elements in human scalp hair around China's largest polymetallic rare earth ore mining and smelting area

There is a growing concern about human health of residents living in areas where mining and smelting occur. In order to understand the exposure to the potentially toxic elements (PTEs), we here identify and examine the cadmium (Cd), chromium (Cr), copper (Cu), manganese (Mn), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and zinc (Zn) in scalp hair of residents living in the mining area (Bayan Obo, n = 76), smelting area (Baotou, n = 57) and a reference area (Hohhot, n = 61). In total, 194 hair samples were collected from the volunteers (men = 87, women = 107) aged 5-77 years old in the three areas. Comparing median PTEs levels between the young and adults, Ni levels were significantly higher in adults living in the smelting area while Cr was highest in adults from the mining area, no significant difference was found for any of the elements in the reference area. From the linear regression model, no significant relationship between PTEs concentration, log₁₀(PTEs), and age was found. The concentrations of Ni, Cd, and Pb in hair were significantly lower in the reference area when compared to both mining and smelting areas. In addition, Cu was significantly higher in the mining area when compared to the smelting area. Factor analysis (FA) indicated that men and women from the smelting area (Baotou) and mining area (Bayan Obo), respectively, had different underlying communality of log10(PTEs), suggesting different sources of these PTEs. Multiple factor analysis quantilized the importance of gender and location when combined with PTEs levels in human hair. The results of this study indicate that people living in mining and/or smelting areas have significantly higher PTEs (Cu, Ni, Cd, and Pb) hair levels compared to reference areas, which may cause adverse health effects. Remediation should therefore be implemented to improve the health of local residents in the mining and smelting areas.

Urinary arsenic and health risk of the residents association in contaminated-groundwater area of the urbanized coastal aquifer, Thailand

Determining of arsenic (As) exposure was conducted in 110 residents which divided into two groups using the WHO guidelines for As in drinking water of 10 μg/L. Moreover, questionnaires with face-to-face interviews were used to make a health risk assessment and to determine the associated factors. The median of As in urine was 61.33 μg/L (5.38-600.86 μg/L), accounting for 68.18% of participants who exposed to the contaminated groundwater had obviously high urinary As levels, exceeded the normal value of 50 μg/L of As, as set by the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). The major factor affecting As in urine was the As contaminated groundwater. Pearson's chi-squared test showed that the urinary As level was influenced on the different groups of As level in groundwater (p-value <0.001). Multiple linear regression confirmed that the actual risk factors of As in urine were the As level in groundwater and the oral exposure route but not the dermal contact. Meanwhile binary logistic regression revealed that all socio-demographic factors were not influenced. Approximately 45.45% of the area had the HI above the risk level of 1, mostly via groundwater drinking pathway. The estimated total cancer risk values, 5.11 × 10^-6 to 2.08 × 10^-3, were higher than the safe level of 10^-6. For long-term exposure, the As concentration and exposure duration were the most variables influencing health risk level. This finding suggests that chronic As exposure should be monitored and also the groundwater should be improved to provide the safe drinking water for the residents.

Understanding the excretion rates of methylmercury and inorganic mercury from human body via hair and fingernails

Effective biomarkers are necessary to better understand the human mercury (Hg) exposure levels. However, mismatched biomarker sampling method causes extra uncertainty in assessing the risk of Hg exposure. To compare the differences between hair and fingernail, and further understand the excretion rates of methylmercury (MeHg) and inorganic mercury (IHg) via hair and fingernails, the total mercury (THg), MeHg, and IHg concentrations in paired hair and fingernail samples were investigated through paired samples collected from two typical mining areas, Wanshan mercury mine area (WMMA) and Hezhang zinc smelting area (HZSA). The positive correlation in THg, MeHg, and IHg concentrations (p <0.01) between hair and fingernail samples indicated that those two biomarkers can be corrected in application of assessing human Hg exposure. Compared to fingernails, the hair was suggested to be a more sensitive biomarker as the concentration of THg, MeHg and IHg were 2 ∼ 4 times higher than those in fingernails. Furthermore, the amounts of THg, MeHg, and IHg excreted via hair were 70 ∼ 226 times higher than that excreted via fingernails, and the hair plays a more important role than fingernails in the excretion of Hg from human bodies. Present study therefore provides some new insights to better understand the fate of human assimilated Hg.

Heavy Metal Concentrations in Malaysian Adults' Hair and Associated Variables in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia

The presence of heavy metals in human hair is being tracked to predict health risk, forensics, and environmental monitoring. Heavy metals are typically non-biodegradable and have a lengthy half-life, allowing them to linger in humans and the environment for many years. Heavy metal exposure in hair has been attributed to multiple sources from the environment and food intake. In this study, copper (Cu), nickel (Ni), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), manganese (Mn), lead (Pb), and cadmium (Cd) levels were measured in the scalp hair of 50 individuals in Bukit Mertajam, Penang, Malaysia. In conjunction with sampling, subjects' age, gender, lifestyle, diet, and working environment were also obtained through the questionnaire. The Atomic Absorption Spectrometry (AAS) method was used to extract all the metals in the hair samples. The mean concentrations of heavy metals were found to be in the following order (unit of mg/kg): Cr > Zn > Pb > Ni > Cd > Cu. Manganese was detected below the limit of quantitation among the elements (< LOQ). All elements except Mn were higher and comparable to the previous studies' international limit values. Cadmium prevalence was substantially associated with age, smoking habit, dyed hair, and working environment in Pearson's correlation analysis (p ≤ 0.05). Zinc was also found to be related to the working environment. Some elements were observed to be statistically related between heavy metals, Cd/Zn, Cd/Ni, Cr/Ni, and Pb/Ni, whereas smoking habit/dyed hair and dyed hair/working environment were the associated factors for metal distribution that were statistically correlated (p ≤ 0.05). To recapitulate, this study found that the distribution of heavy metals in hair was influenced by associated factors and between heavy metals. It has been indicated that heavy metal exposure to humans is influenced by factors such as geographical location, lifestyle, and working environment.

An Investigation for Heavy Metals’ Contamination in Farmers’ Fingernails: Case Study in Libya

This study aims to assess the concentration levels of heavy metals, which are associated with health hazards: arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), and lead (Pb) among Libyan farmers using fingernails as a biomarker. Factors that may contribute for accumulation of these toxic heavy metals in the farmers’ fingernails were also evaluated. This cross-sectional study involved 127 farmers and 25 high school teachers living in the same geographical area as the farmers (served as the control group). Fingernail samples of the participants were collected, treated, and analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) for As, Cd, and Pb contents after microwave acid digestion. Results of this study indicated that the concentration levels of the investigated heavy metals in fingernail samples of both participating farmers and control group were in order of Pb > Cd > As. Also, the results showed that As, Cd, and Pb levels in the farmers’ fingernails were found to be higher than in the control group by about 9-, 5-, and 2-fold, respectively. This difference for all heavy metals analyzed was found to be statistically significant $\left(P<0.05\right)$ . As a conclusion, the results of this study clearly indicated that Libyan farmers have been exposed to high levels of toxic heavy metals as a result of their agricultural activities compared with the general population living in the same geographical area as farmers, which, in turn, pose a high risk to their health. Thus, toxicological, epidemiological, and clinical studies for the Libyan farmers are strongly recommended.

Spatial distribution and health risk assessment of As and Pb contamination in the groundwater of Rayong Province, Thailand

This study investigates the presence of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in groundwater and their spatial distribution in Ban Khai District, Rayong Province, Thailand. Forty groundwater samples were collected at different locations in the dry and wet seasons during March and August of 2019, respectively. The hydrochemical facies illustrate that the major groundwater types in both seasons mainly consisted of Ca-Na-HCO_3, Ca-HCO₃-Cl and Na-HCO₃ types. The concentration of As ranged from <0.300 to 183.00 μg/L, accounting for 22% (18 of 80 samples), exceeding the WHO guidelines of 10 μg/L. The spatial distribution of As was distinctly predominant as a hot spot in some areas during the wet season. The wells may have been contaminated from human activity and thus constituted a point source in the adjacent area. For Pb, its concentration in all the wells were not exceeded 10 μg/L of the WHO guidelines, appearing as a background concentration in this area. Most of the wells were shown to be in an oxidation state, supporting As^V mobility. Moreover, the area also had a nearly neutral pH that promoted As^V desorption, while the presence of undissolved Pb in the aquifers tended to increase. Furthermore, chemical applications to agricultural processes could release the As composition into the groundwater. The health risk resulting from oral consumption was at a higher risk level than dermal contact. The non-carcinogenic risk affecting the adult population exceeded the threshold level by approximately 27.5% of the wells, while for the children group, the risk level was within the limit. Total cancer risk (TCR) of adult residents exceeded the acceptable risk level (1 × 10^-6) in all wells, causing carcinogenic health effects. Therefore, health surveillance is important in monitoring the toxic effects on the local residents who use groundwater from these contaminated wells. Furthermore, a sanitation service and an alternative treatment of the water supply will be needed, especially in wells with high As levels.

Effects of age and sex on the content of heavy metals in the hair, liver and the longissimus lumborum muscle of roe deer Capreolus capreolus L

The aim of the study was to investigate the effects of age and sex on the content of heavy metals (Pb, Cd, Zn and Cu) in the hair, liver and the longissimus lumborum muscle of roe deer (Capreolus capreolus L.). In addition, correlations between heavy metals in individual tested matrices were studied as well as an attempt was made to explain the reasons for their accumulation in specific research matrices. The levels of Zn and Cu were measured using atomic absorption spectroscopy (F-AAS). The levels of Pb and Cd were analysed by means of electrothermal atomic absorption spectroscopy (ET-AAS). In the own research, sex-related statistically significant differences in concentrations of analysed elements were confirmed. Higher levels of the elements were observed in samples collected from does (except for Cd in the liver samples of 6-7-month-old male fawns) but only in some cases, these values were statistically significantly higher. In some cases, age-related differences in the content of individual metals were also confirmed. Age-dependent increased Pb levels in the muscle and liver were reported in 6-7-month-old, <3-4-year-old, <5-6-year-old males. Similar relationships were confirmed for Zn in the bucks' muscles. In the group of does, the increase in heavy metal concentrations with aging was observed for Zn in the muscle and for Pb in the liver. In the other cases, the trend of age-related level changes regarding heavy metals was not clearly demonstrated. Significant positive correlations between Cu and Cd were found for all samples, and significant negative correlations of Cu with Pb were found for the hair and liver. There was a negative correlation of Zn with Cu in all matrices. The study also revealed a negative correlation between Zn and Pb in muscle and a strong significant negative correlation between Zn and Cd in hair and in the liver.

The effect of water source on cognitive functioning in Chinese adults: A cross-sectional and follow-up study

The effect of water source on cognitive functioning is poorly understood. The present study explored the associations between water source and cognition in 9921 participants from the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study (CHARLS). Cognitive functioning was measured from three aspects: orientation and attention, episodic memory, and visuo-construction. Water sources included tap and non-tap water. Generalized linear models and multiple logistic regression models were conducted to investigate the associations of cognitive scores with water source among the whole population and different subgroups. Results from cross-sectional analysis reported that participants without access to tap water showed a lower cognitive score (β = - 0.57; 95% CI: - 0.74, - 0.39) than those with tap water as a water source; and this phenomenon was pronounced for both sexes and across all residences. During 4-years' follow-up, a greater decline of cognitive score was associated with no tap water use in the lowest quartile of baseline cognitive scores (β = - 0.67; 95% CI: - 1.26, - 0.08). Additionally, the utilization rate of tap water was lower in rural areas compared to urban areas. The lowest utilization rates were observed in urban areas of the Anhui province (0.38 in 2011 and 0.55 in 2015) and in rural areas of Inner Mongolia (0.09 in 2011 and 0.20 in 2015). These findings suggest that having no tap water may be a risk factor for cognition impairment, particularly for those with a low basic cognition score. Additionally, our results support the need to expand tap water use in China.

Arsenic in the geo-environment: A review of sources, geochemical processes, toxicity and removal technologies

Impact of arsenic (As) contaminated groundwater on human health, through drinking and irrigation practices, is of grave-concern worldwide. This paper present the review of various sources, processes, health effects and treatment technologies available for the removal of As from arsenic contaminated water. Groundwater with high As concentration is detrimental to human health and incidents of As contamination in groundwater had been reported from different parts of the globe. More serious known As contamination problem as well as largest population at risk are found in Bangladesh, followed by West Bengal state in India along the Indo-Gangetic plains. Large scale natural As contamination of groundwater is found in two types of environment such as strongly reducing alluvial aquifers (ex. Bangladesh, India, China and Hungary) and inland basins in arid or semi-arid areas (ex. Argentina and Mexico). The provisional guideline of 10 ppb (0.0 l mg/l) has been adopted as the drinking water standard by World Health Organization (WHO). In the aquatic environment, the release, distribution and remobilization of As depend on temperature, redox potential, speciation, and interaction between liquid solution and solid phases. As predicaments in the environment is due to its mobilization under natural geogenic conditions as well as anthropogenic activities. Arsenic mineral is not present in As contaminated alluvial aquifer but As occurs adsorbed on hydrated ferric oxide (HFO) generally coat clastic grains derived from Himalayan mountains. As is released to the groundwater mainly by bio-remediated reductive dissolution of HFO with corresponding oxidation of organic matter. The development of strongly reductive dissolution of mineral oxides (Fe and Mn) at near-neutral pH may lead to desorption and ultimately release of As into the groundwater. As release through geochemical process is more important factor in alluvial aquifers causing As contamination rather than sources of arsenic. As is a toxin that dissolves in the bloodstream, rendering the victim susceptible to disease of the skin, bones, and also cancer of liver, kidney, gall bladder and the intestines. It is necessary to adopt highly successful technology to treat As contaminated water into the acceptable limit for human consumption. Universally accepted solutions are not developed/available even after the lapse of almost forty years since slow As poisoning identification in tens of millions of people especially in Bengal delta. The issue poses scientific, technical, health and societal problems even today.

Non-invasive electrochemistry-driven metals tracing in human biofluids

Wearable analytical devices represent the future for fast, de-centralized, and human-centered health monitoring. Electrochemistry-based platforms have been highlighted as the role model for future developments amid diverse strategies and transduction technologies. Among the various relevant analytes to be real-time and non-invasively monitored in bodily fluids, we review the latest wearable achievements towards determining essential and toxic metals. On-skin measurements represent an excellent possibility for humankind: real-time monitoring, digital/fast communication with specialists, quick interventions, removing barriers in developing countries. In this review, we discuss the achievements over the last 5 years in non-invasive electrochemical platforms, providing a comprehensive table for quick visualizing the diverse sensing/technological advances. In the final section, challenges and future perspectives about wearables are deeply discussed.

The association between water source and depressive symptoms in China: A cross-sectional and longitudinal study

BACKGROUND

This study investigates the associations between residential water sources and symptoms of depression and the relationships between switching residential water sources and symptoms of depression in middle-aged and elderly people in China.

METHODS

The cross-sectional study included 12,713 participants and the longitudinal study included 8,286 participants. Symptoms of depression were evaluated using the Center for Epidemiologic Studies Depression Scale. Multiple logistic and Cox regression analyses were used to identify associations between water sources and symptoms of depression.

RESULTS

Participants without tap water were more likely to have depressive symptoms than participants with tap water (odds ratio (OR): 1.30; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.19-1.42) (hazard ratio (HR): 1.18; 95% CI: 1.09-1.28). The lack of access to tap water in residence was positively related to the prevalence and incidence of symptoms of depression in almost all subgroups. Changing the water source from non-tap to tap water decreased the risk of depressive symptoms (HR: 0.69; 95% CI: 0.60 - 0.79).

LIMITATIONS

The results may not be generalizable to the whole population.

CONCLUSIONS

These results suggest that no tap water in residence is a risk factor for depressive symptoms. Therefore, providing tap water in residence may help prevent depression.

Related health risk assessment of exposure to arsenic and some heavy metals in gold mines in Banmauk Township, Myanmar

Exposure to heavy metals in mining activities is a health issue among miners. This study was carried out at three small-scale gold mining sites situated in Banmauk Township, Myanmar and aims to assess the occupational health risks of small-scale gold miners who are exposed to arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) in the soil through the dermal route. Soil samples were analyzed through atomic absorption spectroscopy (AAS). The concentrations of the heavy metals in soils found As, ranged 1.04 mg/kg to 22.17 mg/kg, 0.13 mg/kg to 3.07 mg/kg for Cd, 0.15 mg/kg to 77.44 mg/kg for Hg, and 7.67 mg/kg to 210.00 mg/kg for Pb. In this study, 79% of the participants did not use any form of personal protective equipment (PPE) while working in gold mining processes. Regarding noncancer risk assessment, the results found all hazard quotient were lower than acceptable level (HQ < 1). In addition, all hazard index (HI) was lover than 1, the highest HI was found as 5.66 × 10⁻¹ in the amalgamation process. On the other hand, the result found cancer risk ranged from 8.02 × 10⁻⁸ to 1.75 × 10⁻⁶, and the estimated cancer risks for 9 years ranged from 4.78 × 10⁻⁷ to 1.04 × 10⁻⁵. Therefore, the cancer risks of the miners were greater than the United State Environmental Protection Agency (U.S. EPA) acceptable cancer risk level, 1 × 10⁻⁶, and the miners may be at risk of developing carcinogenic diseases. The suggestion is to educate miners about the health risks of heavy metals and to encourage the use of proper PPE all the time while working in gold mine.

Liquid-liquid extraction combined with online cleanup for the simultaneous determination of PAHs by GC-MS/MS and their hydroxylated metabolites by LC-MS/MS in human fingernails

A method was developed for the simultaneous determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their hydroxylated metabolites (OH-PAHs) in human fingernails using liquid-liquid extraction and online purification. After surface decontamination by rinsing with acetone, the fingernails were digested with sodium hydroxide and subjected to liquid-liquid extraction with a mixture of n-hexane and methyl tertbutyl ether. The organic extract was then fractionated using a silica-based solid-phase extraction (SPE) cartridge to obtain a PAH fraction eluted with n-hexane/dichloromethane (v/v, 95:5) and an OH-PAH fraction eluted with dichloromethane/ethyl acetate (v/v, 50:50). The PAH fraction was directly injected into an online gel permeation chromatography-gas chromatography-triple quadrupole tandem mass spectrometry (GPC-GC-MS/MS) system, enabling rapid determination of 16 PAHs. A parallel online SPE liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was used to determine 12 OH-PAHs. Validation experiments showed that the recovery of PAH and OH-PAH were within range of 67.4%-105.1% (RSD ≤ 10.1%) and 72.8%-102.3% (RSD ≤ 10.9%), respectively, with limits of quantitation (LOQ) of 0.06-0.8 ng/g and 0.15-3.1 ng/g, respectively. Forty-two human fingernail samples from residents of Southern China were analyzed to establish background PAH and OH-PAH levels in this region. Several PAHs and OH-PAHs were detected, at concentrations of 97.5 to 3,687 ng/g for PAHs and 24.2 to 767 ng/g for OH-PAHs. The dominant homologues were two- and three-ring PAH isomers, notably naphthalene (Nap), fluorene (Flu), and phenanthrene (Phe), as well as the corresponding hydroxylated metabolites 2-OH-Nap, OH-Flu, and OH-Phe. Smoking, consuming barbecued food, and age had no significant effects on PAH exposure, but a larger sample would be required to confirm this finding. The online purification strategy presented here expedites cleanup and purification during analysis of human fingernails and should facilitate non-invasive biomonitoring of PAHs in humans, particularly when analyzing large numbers of samples.

Human biomarkers associated with low concentrations of arsenic (As) and lead (Pb) in groundwater in agricultural areas of Thailand

Human biomarkers were used to evaluate the lead (Pb) and arsenic (As) exposure of local people who lived in an agricultural area with intense agrochemical usage and who consumed groundwater. Although the heavy metals/metalloids in the groundwater were at low concentrations, they could cause adverse effects due to a high daily water intake rate over the long term. Biomarkers (hair, fingernails and urine) were collected from 100 subjects along with the local shallow groundwater and tap water, which is the treated deep groundwater, and investigated for the concentrations of As and Pb. Shallow groundwater had an average pH of 5.21 ± 1.90, ranging from 3.77 to 8.34, with average concentrations of As and Pb of 1.311 µg/L and 6.882 µg/L, respectively. Tap water had an average pH of 5.24 ± 1.63, ranging from 3.86 to 8.89, with the average concentrations of As and Pb of 0.77 µg/L and 0.004 µg/L, respectively. The levels of both As and Pb in the hair, fingernails and urine of shallow groundwater-consuming residents were greater than those in the hair, fingernails and urine of tap water-consuming residents. Interestingly, the As level in urine showed a linear relationship with the As concentration in groundwater (R2 = 0.91). The average water consumption rate was approximately two-fold higher than the standard; thus, its consumption posed a health risk even at the low As and Pb levels in the groundwater. The hazard index (HI) ranged from 0.01 to 16.34 (average of 1.20 ± 2.50), which was higher than the acceptable level. Finally, the concomitant factors for As and Pb in the urine, hair and nails from both binary logistic regression and odds ratio (OR) analysis indicated that groundwater consumption was the major concomitant risk factor. This study suggested that direct consumption of this groundwater should be avoided and that the groundwater should be treated, especially before consumption. In conclusion, urine is suggested to be a biomarker of daily exposure to As and Pb, while for long-term exposure to these metals, fingernails are suggested as a better biomarker than hair.

Exposure of street sweepers to cadmium, lead, and arsenic in dust based on variable exposure duration in zinc smelting district, Northeast China

Street dust is an important contributor to heavy metal exposure in street sweepers. In this work, the levels of cadmium (Cd), lead (Pb), and arsenic (As) in street dust were evaluated, and the corresponding health implications for street sweepers in the smelting district of Huludao city northeast China were assessed. The contributions of dietary sources and dust to total metal exposure in street sweepers were compared. Because street sweepers are exposed to street dust both during work and nonwork hours, the health risks faced by street sweepers are uncertain. Therefore, variable exposure duration was considered using a deterministic model. A probabilistic risk assessment model was developed to explore the health effects of street dust on street sweepers via Monte Carlo simulation. The various exposure parameters that affect risk were analyzed using sensitivity analysis. The average Cd, Pb, and As levels in the hair of street sweepers were 2.04, 20.12, and 0.52 mg·kg^-1, respectively. These values were higher than those for residents (i.e., not street sweepers) of Huludao. Strong correlations were found between the logarithms (base 10) of the Cd, Pb, and As contents in dust and hair (r_Cd = 0.581, p < 0.01; r_Pb = 0.428, p < 0.01; r_As = 0.378, p < 0.01; n = 62). Based on analysis using deterministic models, the maximum exposures to Cd and Pb via dust through the alimentary canal were nearly three and six times higher than the dietary exposures, respectively. Sensitivity analysis indicated that exposure duration is an important parameter.

Hair mineral analysis in the population of students living in the Lower Silesia region (Poland) in 2019: Comparison with biomonitoring study in 2009 and literature data

The paper presents a comparative analysis of biomonitoring research results using hair mineral analysis today and 10 years ago. The aim of the present work was to examine the impact of individual factors, on the content of elements in human hair. The mineral analysis of 115 hair samples was carried out using ICP-OES and AAS technique. It was shown that calcium, barium, copper, mercury, magnesium, manganese and selenium content depend on gender and is higher for women. Statistically significant synergistic correlations were identified between the following pairs of elements: (Ca-Mg), (P-S), (Mo-Sb) and (Ba-Pb). The results of the present work were compared with the previous assessment in 2009 on students of the same age. The content of most of the heavy metals in hair was reduced significantly, which is a sign of the improving state of the local environment. The greatest decrease was recorded for silver (96.6%), arsenic (93.4%), mercury (45.1%), lead (67.7%), antimony (55.2%), thallium (10 times) and cobalt (93.7%). The level of the following elements increased: Ba: 27.3%, Cu: 28.5%, Ni: 22.4%, Ti: 191%, Zn: 11.0%. Changes in the content of most heavy metals in hair have been noted, as well as changes of reference ranges, which may indicate an improvement in the state of the environment in Wrocław, Lower Silesia (Poland) over the last 10 years. These results were confirmed by biomonitoring studies carried out with human hair, which was shown to be a reliable biomarker of human exposure to toxic elements.

Use of toenail-bounded heavy metals to characterize occupational exposure and oxidative stress in workers of waterpipe/cigarette cafés

Tobacco smoke is known for releasing metals in indoor air of waterpipe/cigarette cafés. However, the worker exposure to metals, and its association with oxidative stress in these cafés are still unclear. To this end, 54 workers and 38 customers from waterpipe/cigarette cafés (the exposed group), 30 workers from non-smoking cafés (the control group 1 (CG_1)) and 32 individuals from the general population (the control group 2 (CG_2)) were selected and toenails samples were then taken from them. Our findings revealed a significant difference in terms of toenail-bounded metal levels between the exposure and control groups (CG_1 and CG_2) (Mann-Whitney U test, Pvalue < 0.05). This study has also indicated that "type of tobacco" could be considered as a predictor for toenail-bounded heavy metals. Furthermore, our research's results suggest that toenail-bounded heavy metals are positively and significantly correlated with urinary levels of 8- hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG, as a biomarker for the degradation of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) oxidative stress). Therefore, it can be concluded that workers of waterpipe/cigarette cafés are at high risks of adverse health of DNA oxidative degradation.

Identifying dust as the dominant source of exposure to heavy metals for residents around battery factories in the Battery Industrial Capital of China

Heavy metals (HMs) are constantly released into the environment during the production and use of batteries. Battery manufacturing has been ongoing for over six decades in the "Battery Industrial Capital" (located in Xinxiang City) of China, but the potential exposure pathways of residents in this region to HMs remain unclear. To clarify the exposure pathways and health risk of human exposure to HMs, hand wipe samples (n=82) and fingernail samples (n=36) were collected from residents (including young children (0-6 years old), children (7-12 years old) and adults (30-60 years old)) living around battery factories. The total concentrations of the target HMs (Zn, Mn, Cu, Pb, Ni, Cr, Cd, Co) in hand wipes ranged from 133 to 8040 μg/m², and those in fingernails ranged from 9.7-566 μg/g. HM levels in the hand wipe and fingernail samples both decreased with age, and higher HM levels were observed for males than females. The HM composition profiles in these two matrices represented a high degree of similarity, with Zn as the predominant element, and thus, oral ingestion and dermal exposure via dust were expected to be the most important HM exposure pathways for residents in this region. The non-carcinogenic risks (HQs) from dermal and oral ingestion exposure to Cd, Cr, and Pb were higher than those of the other five elements for all three populations, and the HQ_derm of Cd for young children was 2.1 (HQ_oral=0.6). Moreover, the hazard index (HI) values of ∑₈HMs for young children (HI_total=5.2, HI_oral=2.0, HI_dermal=3.2) and children (HI_total=1.6, HI_oral=1.3, HI_dermal=0.3) exceeded the safe threshold (1.0). Therefore, young children and children should be prioritized for protection from HM pollution, and more attention should be paid to young children's dermal exposure to Cd in this region.

Microbial community structure in aquifers associated with arsenic: analysis of 16S rRNA and arsenite oxidase genes

The microbiomes of deep and shallow aquifers located in an agricultural area, impacted by an old tin mine, were explored to understand spatial variation in microbial community structures and identify environmental factors influencing microbial distribution patterns through the analysis of 16S rRNA and aioA genes. Although Proteobacteria, Cyanobacteria, Actinobacteria, Patescibacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Epsilonbacteraeota were widespread across the analyzed aquifers, the dominant taxa found in each aquifer were unique. The co-dominance of Burkholderiaceae and Gallionellaceae potentially controlled arsenic immobilization in the aquifers. Analysis of the aioA gene suggested that arsenite-oxidizing bacteria phylogenetically associated with Alpha-, Beta-, and Gamma proteobacteria were present at low abundance (0.85 to 37.13%) and were more prevalent in shallow aquifers and surface water. The concentrations of dissolved oxygen and total phosphorus significantly governed the microbiomes analyzed in this study, while the combination of NO₃ ^--N concentration and oxidation-reduction potential significantly influenced the diversity and abundance of arsenite-oxidizing bacteria in the aquifers. The knowledge of microbial community structures and functions in relation to deep and shallow aquifers is required for further development of sustainable aquifer management.

Mechanisms of arsenic contamination associated with hydrochemical characteristics in coastal alluvial aquifers using multivariate statistical technique and hydrogeochemical modeling: a case study in Rayong province, eastern Thailand

The rapid development of Rayong Province has resulted in increased demands on groundwater usage. This has potentially induced the release of contaminants such as arsenic (As), among others (i.e., NO₃^-, PO₄^3-) from various land use types-especially in intensive agricultural areas and heavy industrial areas, including landfill sites. The objectives of this research are to investigate the As speciation and groundwater chemistry occurring due to different hydrogeological settings and the influence of human activities and to explain the mechanism of As release in the coastal alluvial aquifers in Rayong Province using multivariate statistical techniques and hydrogeochemical modeling (PHREEQC). Six major water facies, mainly consisting of Ca-Na-HCO₃-Cl and Ca-Na-Cl, were included in the hydrochemical analysis. Arsenic levels were inversely correlated with NO₃^-, SO₄^2-, DO, and ORP, confirming the reducing environment in the groundwater system. The results from the PHREEQC model show that most wells were strongly under-supersaturated with respect to arsenorite, scorodite, and arsenic pentoxide. Arsenic (As) is probably derived from the dissolution of Fe oxide and hydroxide (i.e., Fe(OH)₃, goethite, maghemite, and magnetite). The multivariate statistical techniques revealed that the As species mainly consisted of As(III), governed by the reducing environment, while As(V) may be desorbed from Fe oxide and hydroxide as the pH increases. Anthropogenic inputs and intensive pumping may enhance the reducing environment, facilitating the release of As(III) into the groundwater. The knowledge gained from this study helps to better understand the mechanisms of As contamination in coastal groundwater aquifers, which is useful for groundwater management, including the optimum pumping rate and long-term monitoring of groundwater quality.

Identifying the sources and spatial patterns of potentially toxic trace elements (PTEs) in Shanghai suburb soils using global and local regression models

Destructive development of suburban areas in some metropolises has exposed suburban soils to high risk of potentially toxic trace elements (PTEs) enrichment, which also threatens human and ecosystem health. This study investigated the pollution status, sources and spatial patterns of four PTEs (Pb, Cd, Cr and As) in 1805 soil samples collected from the suburbs of Shanghai in 2015. Nineteen potential sources, including: 6 soil property factors, 10 proximity factors and 3 topography factors, were selected to help explain the PTEs aggregation using logistic regression models from global and local perspectives. The statistical results of PTEs concentration revealed that Cd showed the highest pollution risk in local soils, which was followed by As. Soil property was the primary factor affecting the PTEs (except Cr) enrichment, both identified by global models and local models. The local model particularly emphasized the significant correlation between soil property and PTEs in most parts of the outer suburbs and southeastern inner suburbs. Some proximity factors such as distance to district center and water were negatively correlated with Cd pollution and some topography factors such as elevation and slope were closely related to As pollution. It is worth noting that in the coastal areas, especially Chongming Island, there were obvious PTEs depositions in the soil near the estuary. This study helps to identify the sources of anthropogenic contamination and geogenic enrichment of the four PTEs and their spatial patterns, playing an essential role in formulating regional environmental policies for coastal cities.

Heavy Metals in the Soils of Placer Small-Scale Gold Mining Sites in Myanmar

BACKGROUND

Artisanal and small-scale mining activities are widely practiced globally. Concentrations of heavy metals associated with gold, such as copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), arsenic (As), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg) and lead (Pb) can increase in the environment as a result of mining activities, leading to environmental pollution and pose toxicity risks to humans and animals.

OBJECTIVES

The aim of the present study was to investigate soil concentrations of toxic heavy metals in placer small-scale gold mining operations in Myanmar.

METHODS

Soil samples were collected from three placer small-scale gold mining sites: Site A located in the Hmawbon public protected forest, Site B and Site C, situated in the Nant-Kyin reserved forest around Nar Nant Htun village. At each site, soil samples were collected from four gold mining stages (ore processing, sluicing, panning, and amalgamation). Atomic absorption spectroscopy was utilized to examine the concentrations of As, Cd, Pb, and Hg.

RESULTS

The highest heavy metal concentrations were generally found in the amalgamation stages across all the gold mining sites. Across the three mining sites, the maximum heavy metal concentrations in the amalgamation stage were 22.170 mg.kg^-1 for As, 3.070 mg.kg^-1 for Cd, 77.440 mg.kg^-1 for Hg, and 210.000 mg.kg^-1 for Pb.

CONCLUSIONS

The present study examined the concentrations of As, Cd, Hg and Pb in the soil of several small-scale gold mining sites in Banmauk Township, Myanmar. The results demonstrated the presence of high concentrations of heavy metals in the soil of the gold mining sites. Miners in this area work without proper personal protective equipment, and frequent exposure to heavy metals in the soil may cause adverse health effects. The present study provides baseline data for future risk assessment studies of heavy metal contamination in gold mines.

Levels and sources of PBDEs and PCBs in human nails from e-waste, urban, and rural areas in South China

Human nails have been increasingly used as a biomarker for human exposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs). In the present study, the fingernails of e-waste-dismantling workers from Longtang town, Qingyuan city, rural residents from Shijiao town, Qingyuan city, and urban residents from Guangzhou city, respectively, were collected from South China to monitor the human burdens of polybrominated diphenyl ether (PBDEs) and polychlorinated biphenyl (PCBs). The median concentrations of in the nails of the e-waste-dismantling workers, and urban and rural residents were 412, 129, and 82.1 ng g^-1, respectively, and the median concentrations of were 108, 8.4, and 22.1 ng g^-1, respectively. The levels of PCBs and PBDEs in the nails of e-waste-dismantling workers were significantly higher as compared to those for urban and rural residents (p < 0.05), implying the continuous and greater exposure to these chemicals in the e-waste recycling areas. BDE 209 (92-98%) was the major congener of PBDEs and CB 52 (26-51%) was the main congener of PCB in nail samples. However, no significant gender difference was observed for PBDE and PCB levels in nails from all three investigated areas, and no significant correlation was found between their levels and the age of the participants. The enantiomer fractions (EFs) of CBs 95 and 132 indicated that the external sources (e.g. dust and/or air) were the primary sources for CBs 95 and 132 in human nails from the e-waste area, while the contribution from the internal sources (e.g. serum) could be in a small percentage. The results of this study indicate that human nails can be used as a proper indicator of human exposure to PCBs and PBDEs, and further studies are needed by a comprehensive investigation of the relationships between the PCB and PBDE levels in the nails and serum and/or other internal tissues.

Exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in people living in urban and rural areas as revealed by hair analysis

Some polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are carcinogenic and mutagenic to humans. However, little is known about PAH exposure to people living in urban and suburban areas through comparative studies. Some studies have indicated that human hair can be used as a noninvasive biomarker of PAH exposure. Therefore, we collected hair samples from 66 volunteers from Nanjing and Ningbo, China, to detect PAH concentrations in this work. The highest levels in the hair samples were found in phenanthrene > anthracene > naphthalene among the parent PAHs. Sixteen parent PAHs showed higher concentrations in the samples from Nanjing than in the samples from Ningbo. Significantly higher levels of some PAHs were observed in male hair than in female hair in Nanjing, and in hair from smokers than in hair from non-smokers in both Nanjing and Ningbo. In addition, there was a significant effect of the age on the concentration of low-molecular-weight PAHs and ∑PAHs in human hair in both Nanjing and Ningbo. Studying the inter-chemical associations between these PAHs indicated similarities and differences between Nanjing and Ningbo.

Metallic elements in human hair from residents in smelting districts in northeast China: Environmental factors and differences in ingestion media

The health of residents in Huludao City is affected by the emissions of heavy metals from smelting, diet and atmospheric precipitation. This study investigated the concentrations of Hg, Cd, Pb, Cu and Zn in scalp hair samples from 259 residents of different ages and genders from five districts in Huludao City and examined the main factors for heavy metal exposure. Cd and Pb concentrations in hair samples exceeded the normal concentration ranges for human hair (Cd < 0.3 mg/kg; Pb < 9.3 mg/kg), and the highest Pb concentrations were found in subjects in the age range 0-15 years. Samples from men were higher in Cd and Pb compared to those for women. Workers from the Huludao zinc plant (HZP) had higher concentrations of all metals in their hair relative to other occupations except for Cu. Geographically, the highest Cd and Pb concentrations in hair were found for residents living in Daochi district (DCD) and the Zn plant district (ZPD), respectively. In smelting regions, the effects of dust ingestion on heavy metal exposure were more important than in non-smelting regions.

Health risk assessment of heavy metals (Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, As and Cr) in wheat grain receiving repeated Zn fertilizers

Soil application of Zn fertilizer is an effective approach to improve yield and Zn accumulation in wheat grain. However, it remains unclear whether repeated Zn application can result in high accumulation of heavy metals (HMs) in soils and grains and thus represents a potential risk for human consumption. This study aimed to evaluate the health risk assessment of HMs in a wheat production system which had continuously received 8 years of Zn application at varying rates (0, 2.3, 5.7, 11.4, 22.7, 34.1 kg Zn ha^-1). The results showed that Zn application significantly increased the soil total Zn concentration without affecting concentrations of As, Pb, Cd, Cu and Cr. Across Zn rates, Zn application increased grain concentrations of Zn, Pb and Cd by 75%, 51% and 14%, respectively, and reduced grain As concentration by 14%. The human health risk assessment revealed that the threshold hazard quotients for the individual HM were below 1, independent of Zn rates. The hazard index (HI) values at Zn rates of 11.4, 22.7 and 34.1 kg Zn ha^-1 were significantly greater than that at null Zn treatment. Furthermore, exposures to As, Cu and Zn accounted for 97% of HI at all Zn rates. Analysis of the threshold cancer risk with Pb and As showed that ingestion of wheat grain even from highest Zn application rate wouldn't bring the lifetime carcinogenic risk. In contrast, long-term Zn application significantly reduced the carcinogenic risk of As by 9.7-26.5%. In conclusion, repeated soil applications of Zn at optimal rate (5.7 kg Zn ha^-1) didn't cause health risk for Zn, Cu, Cd, Pb, Cr, and As, while improving productivity and grain Zn concentration of wheat to meet human recruitment. Our study highlights the importance of appropriate Zn fertilizer management in improving grain quality while reducing HMs risks from human consumption.

Hazardous heavy metals contamination of vegetables and food chain: Role of sustainable remediation approaches - A review

This review emphasizes the role of toxic metal remediation approaches due to their broad sustainability and applicability. The rapid developmental processes can incorporate a large quantity of hazardous and unseen heavy metals in all the segments of the environment, including soil, water, air and plants. The released hazardous heavy metals (HHMs) entered into the food chain and biomagnified into living beings via food and vegetable consumption and originate potentially health-threatening effects. The physical and chemical remediation approaches are restricted and localized and, mainly applied to wastewater and soils and not the plant. The nanotechnological, biotechnological and genetical approaches required to more rectification and sustainability. A cellular, molecular and nano-level understanding of the pathways and reactions are responsible for potentially toxic metals (TMs) accumulation. These approaches can enable the development of crop varieties with highly reduced concentrations of TMs in their consumable foods and vegetables. As a critical analysis by authors observed that nanoparticles could provide very high adaptability for both in-situ and ex-situ remediation of hazardous heavy metals (HHMs) in the environment. These methods could be used for the improvement of the inbuilt genetic potential and phytoremediation ability of plants by developing transgenic. These biological processes involve the transfer of gene of interest, which plays a role in hazardous metal uptake, transport, stabilization, inactivation and accumulation to increased host tolerance. This review identified that use of nanoremediation and combined biotechnological and, transgenic could help to enhance phytoremediation efficiency in a sustainable way.

Metagenomic insights into microbial diversity in a groundwater basin impacted by a variety of anthropogenic activities

Microbial communities in groundwater are diverse and each may respond differently to environmental change. The goal of this study was to investigate the diversity, abundance, and dynamics of microbial communities in impacted groundwater and correlate them to the corresponding land use and groundwater geochemistry, using an Illumina MiSeq platform targeting the V3 and V4 regions of the 16S rRNA gene. The resulting MiSeq sequencing revealed the co-occurrence patterns of both abundant and rare microbial taxa within an impacted groundwater basin. Proteobacteria were the most common groundwater-associated bacterial phylum, mainly composed of the classes Gammaproteobacteria, Betaproteobacteria, Alphaproteobacteria, and Deltaproteobacteria. The phyla detected at less abundances were the Firmicutes, Bacteroidetes, Planctomycetes, Actinobacteria, OD1, and Nitrospirae. The members of detected groundwater microorganisms involved in natural biogeochemical processes such as nitrification, anammox, methane oxidation, sulfate reduction, and arsenic transformation. Some of the detected microorganisms were able to perform anaerobic degradation of organic pollutants. The resulting PCA indicates that major land usage within the sampling area seemed to be significantly linked to the groundwater microbial distributions. The distinct microbial pattern was observed in the groundwater collected from a landfill area. This study suggests that the combinations of anthropogenic and natural effects possibly led to a unique pattern of microbial diversity across different locations at the impacted groundwater basin.

Food as medicine: Selenium enriched lentils offer relief against chronic arsenic poisoning in Bangladesh

Chronic arsenic (As) exposure is a major environmental threat to human health affecting >100 million people worldwide. Low blood selenium (Se) increases the risk of As-induced health problems. Our aim was to reduce As toxicity through a naturally Se-rich lentil diet. In a randomized, double-blind, placebo-control trial in Bangladesh, 405 participants chronically exposed to As were enrolled. The intervention arm (Se-group) consumed Se-rich lentils (55 μg Se/day); the control arm received lentils of similar nutrient profile except with low Se (1.5 μg Se/day). Anthropometric measurements, blood, urine and stool samples, were taken at baseline, 3 and 6 months; hair at baseline and 6 months after intervention. Morbidity data were collected fortnightly. Measurements included total As in all biological samples, As metabolites in urine, and total Se in blood and urine. Intervention with Se-rich lentils resulted in higher urinary As excretion (p = 0.001); increased body mass index (p ≤ 0.01), and lower incidence of asthma (p = 0.05) and allergy (p = 0.02) compared to the control group. The Se-group demonstrated increased excretion of urinary As metabolite, dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) at 6 months compared to control group (p = 0.008). Consuming Se-rich lentils can increase As excretion and improve the health indicators in the presence of continued As exposure.

Distribution characteristics and influencing factors of heavy metals in scalp hair of Huainan urban residents

In order to explore the level of heavy metal pollution in human hair of residents in Huainan City and provide theoretical guidance for prevention and control of heavy metal pollution, human hair samples from 174 residents in Huainan City were collected so that heavy metal (Cr, Cu, Pb, Zn, As, and Fe) concentrations in scalp hair could be tested, and meanwhile their relationship with sex, age, and spatial distribution characteristics could be explored as well. According to the final analysis, the average concentration of Cr, Pb, Cu, Fe, Zn, and As in human hair amounted to 1.56, 6.41, 14.96, 31.13, 166.54, and 1.07 mg/kg. The highest average of Cr and Pb contents in human hair occurred in the area of Xiejiaji District; Fe, Zn, and Hg were in Datong District; and Cu and As were in Panji District respectively. Overall, the lowest risk of heavy metal exposure existed in Tianjia'an District. Heavy metal content in hair varied across sexes and ages. Pb concentration in hair would decrease as age increased. The highest Pb concentration appeared in children between ages 0 and 10, the amount of which was significantly different from that in other age groups; hence, children appear to be more susceptible to Pb pollution than other ages. Contents of Cr, Fe, Zn, and As in hair would also increase with age; Fe content in hair was particularly correlated with age. The contents of Cr, Pb, Fe, and As in men's hair were higher than those in women's, whereas the case of Cu and Zn was just the opposite. There were significant differences between sexes concerning the contents of Cr, Cu, and As, and a highly significant difference about Zn between sexes as well. These results indicated that the contents of heavy metal in residents' hair would be closely related to the features of the local environment and population.

Health risks to local residents from the exposure of heavy metals around the largest copper smelter in China

Non-ferrous smelting releases lots of heavy metals to the environment. Although numerous studies have focused on pollution in the environment, fewer have studied the adverse health effects. In the current study, samples of food, hair and urine were collected and analyzed for zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), chromium (Cr), nickel (Ni), lead (Pb) and copper (Cu) from residents of 3 villages near the largest copper smelter in China. The estimated daily intake (EDI), target hazard quotient (THQ), and Hazard Index (HI) were used to estimate and analyze the health risks to local residents (children, adults, and seniors). The Zn, Cr, Ni, Fe, Pb and Cu concentrations in food ranged from 16.02 to 61.48 mg kg^-1, 0.23-13.64 mg kg^-1, 0.10-5.90 mg kg^-1, 19.16-170.05 mg kg^-1, 0.15-3.62 mg kg^-1, and 0.53-2.74 mg kg^-1, respectively. Zn, Cr, Ni and Pb concentrations in all vegetables were above the national tolerance limits. Children had higher EDIs of heavy metals than that of adults and seniors. The THQ of single elements and the HI of combined elements indicated that the EDI of Pb and Cu showed the highest potential health risks, followed by the EDI of Zn and Fe, and Ni, Cr. High EDI of heavy metals resulted in much higher concentrations of heavy metals in hair and urine samples than those of normal Chinese residents, showing that residents around the smelter have potential health risks through daily food intake. The main sources of these heavy metals were from the consumption of rice and vegetables and it is imperative that measures should be taken to control this urgent problem.

Heavy metal contamination and health risk assessment for children near a large Cu-smelter in central China

Nonferrous metallurgy is causing significant concerns due to its emissions of heavy metals into environment, degrading environmental quality, and consequently posing high risks to human health. In this study, the concentration levels of Cadmium (Cd), Copper (Cu), Lead (Pb), and Arsenic (As) were investigated in soil, crop, well water, and fish samples collected around the Daye Copper Smelter in Hubei province, China, and the potential health risks were assessed for local children. The results showed that soils near the smelter were heavily polluted by Cd, Cu, Pb, and As, with the mean concentrations of 4.87, 195.26, 92.65, and 35.84 mg/kg, respectively, which were significantly higher than the values of soil Cd (0.18 mg/kg), Cu (32.84 mg/kg), Pb (28.46 mg/kg), and As (13.65 mg/kg) in the reference area (p < 0.001). The concentrations of Cd and As in vegetable samples collected from smelter-affected area exceeded the maximum permissible level (MPL) for food in China by 82% and 39%, respectively. The concentrations of Cd and Pb in rice grain harvested from smelter-affected area were 9.35 and 1.35 times higher than the corresponding MPL, respectively. The concentrations of Cd, As, and Cu in fish muscle from smelter-affected area exceeded the national MPL by 72%, 41%, and 24% of analyzed samples, respectively. The concentrations of Cd (p < 0.05) and As (p < 0.01) in well water were significantly higher in the smelter-affected area than those in the reference area, respectively. The health risks to local children in the smelter-affected area were 30.25 times higher than the acceptable level of 1, and most of the risks were resulted from Cd (46%), As (27%) and Pb (20%). The intake of crops was a major source (78%) to health risks for local children.

Facilitated transport of cadmium with montmorillonite KSF colloids under different pH conditions in water-saturated sand columns: Experiment and transport modeling

This study investigated the impact of pH on the migration of cadmium(II) ions (Cd²⁺) in relation to montmorillonite KSF colloids through a water-saturated sand column (WSSC). The sorption isotherms of Cd²⁺ on colloids and sand at pH values of 3, 6, and 8 were characterized by batch experiments. Cd²⁺ sorption by colloids and sand fit well with the Freundlich model. In the column experiments, increasing the pH increased the retardation factors and K_F values of Cd²⁺ both with and without the presence of the colloids. The amount of Cd²⁺ sorbed onto the montmorillonite KSF colloids in the column effluent increased from 0.29 to 0.97 mg as the pH increased. The colloid increased Cd²⁺ mobility and acted as a carrier at a high solution pH. The increasing level of Cd²⁺ sorbed on colloids as the pH increased resulted in a long tailing of the breakthrough curve (BTC) of the total Cd, indicating that the total Cd was controlled by rate-limited reactions. These findings indicate that when the solution pH was greater than the point of zero charge (PZC) of the colloids (pH > 6), the system tended to follow a nonequilibrium two-site (TSM) model rather than an equilibrium (CD_eq) model. This implies that the PZC of the colloids in the groundwater system is the main factor in predicting facilitated Cd²⁺ transport.
