State-of-art advances on removal, degradation and electrochemical monitoring of 4-aminophenol pollutants in real samples: A review

Surface enhanced transmission Raman spectroscopy: Quantitative performances for impurity analysis in complex matrices

A transmission detection mode was investigated with SERS analyses (SETRS). A comparison between backscattering and transmission detection modes was conducted to demonstrate the feasibility of performing SETRS analyses. The impact of various parameters on the SERS signal intensity such as sample volume, lens collection optic, laser beam size and laser power were then examined. The analytical performances of SETRS were further evaluated through the quantification of an impurity (4-aminophenol) ranging from 3 to 20 µg/mL in a commercial pharmaceutical product using a total error risk-based approach. To account for expected variability of routine analysis, 9 batches of silver nanoparticles suspensions were used and experiments were performed over 5 different days and by 2 operators. Univariate spectral analysis based on a quadratic regression was compared to a multivariate approach using a partial least square regression. The presented results demonstrated that SETRS can be used to determine an impurity in a complex matrix opening new perspectives for quantitative applications.

2D/3D hierarchical porous structure of mNPC/SMOH@C to construct an electrochemical sensor for the simultaneous determination of p-acetylaminophenol and p-aminophenol

BACKGROUND

As persistent organic pollutants (POPs), the accumulation of p-acetylaminophenol (PAT) and p-aminophenol (PAP) in water can seriously damage the health of plants and animals, ultimately leading to threats to human health and safety. Electrochemical sensors have the advantages of being fast, inexpensive, and accurate compared to the complex, expensive, and cumbersome conventional analytical methods. In this study, we designed and synthesized composites with two-dimensional/three-dimensional (2D/3D) porous structures to construct an efficient electrochemical platform for the simultaneous detection of PAT and PAP.

RESULTS

In this work, a novel 3D foamy birnessite Na0.55Mn2O4·1.5H2O@C (SMOH@C) was synthesized, which was composited with 2D ordered mesoporous nanosheets (mNPC) to construct electrochemical sensors detecting PAT and PAP simultaneously. The prepared 2D/3D porous structure of mNPC/SMOH@C increased the exposure of active sites due to its large specific surface area. The introduction of a 3D carbon skeleton altered the charge transfer rate of SMOH@C, and the rich pore structure and oxygen-rich vacancies created favorable conditions for the diffusion and adsorption of PAP and PAT, which enabled the sensitive detection of PAT and PAP. The constructed mNPC/SMOH@C electrochemical sensor could simultaneously detect PAT (1 × 10-7 - 1 × 10-4 M) and PAP (5 × 10-8 - 1 × 10-4 M) with detection limits of 20.4 nM and 30.1 nM, respectively. The sensor has good repeatability (RSD <4 %) and reproducibility (RSD <4 %), and satisfactory recoveries (96.7-102.8 %) were obtained in the analysis of natural water samples.

SIGNIFICANCE

In this paper, for the first time, we present the synthesis of 3D foam birnessite and its composite with mNPC for the electrochemical simultaneous detection of PAT and PAP. Our proposed strategy for fabricating 2D/3D porous composites lays the foundation for the design and synthesis of other porous materials. In addition, this study provides new ideas for developing efficient and practical electrochemical sensors for detecting pollutants in aquatic environments.

Supercritical-CO2 mediated preparation of porous carbon from Araucaria heterophylla biomass: A proficient nanomolar detection platform for phenolic water pollutant

4-aminophenol (AP), an aromatic phenolic compound, is commonly found in commercial products that eventually enter and pollute environmental water sources. The precise detection and quantification of AP in environmental samples are critical for comprehensively assessing contamination levels, safeguarding public health, and formulating effective remediation strategies. In the shed of light, this work proposes an electrochemical sensing platform for detecting and quantifying AP using Araucaria heterophylla biomass-derived activated carbon (AH-AC) prepared via the SC-CO2 pathway. To evaluate the significance of SC-CO2-mediated chemical activation (SC-AHAC), a comparative study with conventional activation methods (C-AHAC) was also conducted. The physical characterizations such as structural, morphological, optical, and elemental analysis demonstrate the greater ID/IG value and enhanced surface functionalities of SC-AHAC than C-AHAC. The obtained lower empirical factor (R) value of 1.89 for SC-AHAC suggests increased disorder and a higher presence of single-layer amorphous carbon compared to C-AHAC (2.03). In the electrochemical analysis, the active surface area of the SC-AHAC modified electrode (0.069 cm2) is higher than that of the C-AHAC modified electrode (0.061 cm2), demonstrating the significance of SC-CO2 activation. Further, the quantitative analysis on SC-AHAC@SPCE resulted in a sensitivity of 3.225 μA μM-1 cm-2 with the detection limit and quantification limit of 2.13 and 7.11 nM L-1, respectively, in the linear range of 0.01-582.5 μM L-1 at the oxidation potential of 0.13V. This suggests that the prepared SC-AHAC could be a promising electrocatalyst for AP detection in the environmental and healthcare sectors.

Electrochemical detection of oxytetracycline employing sugarcane carbon modified graphite electrode

The present study used CeO2-Co3O4 quantum dots@porous carbon/multiwalled carbon nanotube (CeO2-Co3O4 QDs@PC/MWCNT/GE) composites to modify graphite electrodes to fabricate high-sensitivity electrochemical sensors to detect the presence of oxytetracycline (OTC). The quantum dots were made from waste sugarcane bagasse. The electrochemical analysis demonstrated the superior electrochemical performance of CeO2-Co3O4 QDs@PC/MWCNT/GE, with a peak current density of 1.276 mA/cm2. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) revealed lower impedance values for CeO2-Co3O4 QDs@PC/MWCNT/GE compared to other electrodes, indicating enhanced conductivity. The modified electrode exhibited an enlarged electrochemically active area, with values of 0.602 cm2, almost seven times that of the bare graphite electrode (0.079 cm2). The results showed that the CeO2-Co3O4 QDs@PC/MWCNT/GE had excellent performance for OTC detection, and its linear calibration range was 1.007 × 10-8 to 2.04 × 10-7 M (i.e., 0.005-0.1 ppm) and 1.007 × 10-6 to 1.209 × 10-4 M (i.e., 0.5-60 ppm). The limit of detection and limit of quantification were 1.23 nM (0.61 ppb) and 4.09 nM (2.03 ppb) (S/N = 3), respectively. The electrode demonstrated long-term stability for up to 7 weeks. This method provides a new way to prepare electrochemical sensors for OTC detection.

Eco-friendly spectrophotometric methods for concurrent analysis of phenol, 2-aminophenol, and 4-aminophenol in ternary mixtures and water samples: assessment of environmental sustainability

Recently, there has been a high demand for green procedures in analytical chemistry, particularly those utilizing eco-friendly solvents. In this context, three feasible derivative UV spectrophotometric methods namely, derivative ratio-zero crossing spectra (DRZCS), double divisor ratio spectra (DDRS), and successive derivative subtraction coupled with constant multiplication (SDS-CM) were developed to quantify a ternary mixture of phenol (P), 2-aminophenol (2-AP), and 4-aminophenol (4-AP) in real water samples simultaneously, using ethanol as a solvent. The established methods demonstrated a good linear range, covering 2-60 μg mL-1 for P and 2-50 μg mL-1 for 2-AP and 4-AP, in all approaches with a high correlation coefficient (R2 ≥ 0.9995). In compliance with ICH guidelines, the methods exhibited acceptable precision and accuracy, as indicated by good spike recovery with low relative standard deviations. The eco-friendliness of the UV spectrophotometric approach was assessed using analytical eco-scale (AES), analytical greenness (AGREE), and analytical greenness metrics for sample preparation (AGREEprep). These evaluations confirmed the eco-friendliness of the proposed methods in terms of solvents, energy consumption, and waste generation. The proposed procedure proved to be efficient in quantifying each component in laboratory-synthesized mixtures and real water samples, thanks to its simplicity, accuracy, sensitivity, and cost-effectiveness.

Multisignals Sensing Platform for Highly Sensitive, Accurate, and Rapid Detection of p-Aminophenol Based on Adsorption and Oxidation Effects Induced by Defective NH2-Ag-nMOFs

Labile toxic pollutants detection remains a challenge due to the problem that a single method is prone to producing false-negative/-positive signals. The construction of a multisignal sensing platform with the advantages of different strategies is an effective way to solve this problem. Herein, a novel resonant light scattering (RLS), fluorescent and rapid visual multisignals sensing strategy for p-aminophenol (p-AP) detection was designed based on the adsorption and oxidation effects of defective amino-functionalized Ag-based nano metal-organic frameworks (NH2-Ag-nMOFs). In this reaction process, NH2-Ag-nMOFs with incomplete coordination oxidize H2O2 to produce singlet oxygen (1O2) which rapidly oxidizes p-AP, leading to the reduction of Ag+ to Ag0, thereby disrupting the structure of NH2-Ag-nMOFs and resulting in fluorescence quenching of NH2-Ag-nMOFs. Synchronously, owing to Ag0 aggregation and p-AP oxidation, the color of the system changed from colorless to purplish-red and pale brown within 20 s. The assay has realized the rapid naked-eye detection of 5 μM p-AP rapidly. Additionally, thanks to the intermolecular hydrogen bonding, NH2-Ag-nMOFs-p-AP aggregates formed, which enhanced the RLS signal. With the RLS signal, the designed multisignals sensing platform can analyze p-AP at a concentration as low as 11 nM and yield a wider dynamic response range than any single signal strategy reported before, which can quickly meet the measurement requirement of different actual samples. Overall, the proposed strategy without assembling various signal indicators presented an accurate, rapid, cost-effective, and sensitive multisignals sensing platform for p-AP analysis and has great prospects in labile toxic pollutants monitoring.

Decoration of viscose fibers with silver nanoparticle-based titanium-organic framework for use in environmental applications

To effectively remove pharmaceuticals, nitroaromatic compounds, and dyes from wastewater, an efficient multifunctional material was created based on silver nanoparticles (Ag) and MIL-125-NH2 (MOF) immobilized on viscose fibers (VF) as a support substrate. Firstly, silver nanoparticles (Ag) were immobilized on the surface of viscose fibers (VF) via in situ synthesis using trisodium citrate (TSC) as a reducing agent to create (VF-Ag). Then, VF and VF-Ag were decorated with the titanium metal-organic framework MIL-125-NH2 (MOF) to create VF-MOF and VF-Ag-MOF. The influence of VF-Ag, VF-MOF, and VF-Ag-MOF on the sonocatalytic or sonophotocatalytic degradation of sulfa drugs was investigated. The results show that VF-Ag-MOF showed excellent sonocatalytic and sonophotocatalytic activity towards the degradation of sulfa drugs compared to VF-Ag and VF-MOF. Furthermore, sonophotodegradation showed a dramatic enhancement in the efficiency of degradation of sulfa drugs compared to sonodegradation. The sonophotodegradation degradation percentage of sulfanilamide, sulfadiazine, and sulfamethazine drugs in the presence of VF-Ag-MOF was 65, 90, and 95 after 45 min of ultrasonic and visible light irradiation. The catalytic activity of VF-Ag, VF-MOF, and VF-Ag-MOF was evaluated through the conversion of p-nitrophenol (4-NP) to p-aminophenol (4-AP). The results demonstrate that VF-Ag-MOF had the highest catalytic activity, followed by VF-Ag and VF-MOF. The conversion percentage of 4-NP to 4-AP was 69%. The catalytic or photocatalytic effects of VF-Ag, VF-MOF, and VF-Ag-MOF on the elimination of methylene blue (MB) dye were investigated. The results demonstrate that VF-Ag-MOF showed high efficiency in removing the MB dye through the reduction (65%) or photodegradation (71%) after 60 min. VF-Ag-MOF composites structure-activity relationships represent that doping within silver NPs enhanced the photocatalytic activity of MIL-125-NH2, which could be explained as follows: (i) Due to the formation of a Schottky barrier at the junction between MIL-125-NH2 and Ag NPs, the photogenerated electrons in the conduction band of MIL-125-NH2 were supposed to be quickly transferred to the valence band of the Ag NPs, and subsequently, the electrons were transferred to the conduction band of Ag NPs. This considerable electron transferring process, which is reported as Z scheme heterojunction, can efficiently suppress the recombination of electron/hole pairs in VF-Ag-MIL-125-NH2 composites. (ii) Sufficient separation between the photogenerated charge carriers (holes and electrons) and avoiding their recombination enhanced the photocatalytic activity of composites.

A quinoline derived Schiff base as highly selective 'turn-on' probe for fluorogenic recognition of Al3+ ion

A quinoline-derived Schiff base QnSb has been synthesized for fluorescent and colorimetric recognition of Al3+ ions in a semi-aqueous medium. The compound QnSb has been characterized by elemental analysis, FT-IR, 1H/13C NMR, UV-Vis and fluorescence spectral techniques. The crystal structure of the QnSb was confirmed by single crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) analysis. Notably, almost non-fluorescent QnSb served as a 'turn on' responsive probe for Al3+ by inducing a remarkable fluorescence enhancement at 422 nm when excited at 310 nm. The probe QnSb exhibited high selectivity for Al3+ in CH3CN/H2O (4:1, v/v) solution over several competing metal ions (e.g., Mg2+, Pb2+, Zn2+, Cd2+, Co2+, Cu2+, Ca2+, Ni2+, Fe3+/2+, Cr3+, Mn2+, Sn2+, and Hg2+). The limit of detection (LoD) was computed as low as 15.8 nM which is significantly lower than the permissible limit set by WHO for Al3+ ions in drinking water. A 1:1 binding stoichiometry of complex QnSb-Al3+ was established with the help of Job's plot, ESI-MS, NMR and DFT analyses. Based on its remarkable sensing ability, the probe QnSb was utilized to establish molecular logic gates, and the fluorescence detection of Al3+ could clearly be demonstrated on the filter paper test strips.

Strain-level diversity in sulfonamide biodegradation: adaptation of Paenarthrobacter to sulfonamides

The widespread occurrence of sulfonamides raises significant concerns about the evolution and spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Biodegradation represents not only a resistance mechanism but also a clean-up strategy. Meanwhile, dynamic and diverse environments could influence the cellular function of individual sulfonamide-degrading strains. Here, we present Paenarthrobacter from different origins that demonstrated diverse growth patterns and sulfonamide-degrading abilities. Generally, the degradation performance was largely associated with the number of sadA gene copies and also relied on its genotype. Based on the survey of sad genes in the public database, an independent mobilization of transposon-borne genes between chromosome and plasmid was observed. Insertions of multiple sadA genes could greatly enhance sulfonamide-degrading performance. Moreover, the sad gene cluster and sadA transposable element showed phylogenetic conservation currently, being identified only in two genera of Paenarthrobacter (Micrococcaceae) and Microbacterium (Microbacteriaceae). Meanwhile, Paenarthrobacter exhibited a high capacity for genome editing to adapt to the specific environmental niche, opening up new opportunities for bioremediation applications.

Honeycomb porous heterostructures of NiMo layered double hydroxide nanosheets anchored on CoNi metal-organic framework nano-blocks as electrodes for asymmetric supercapacitors

Supercapacitors (SCs) have the advantages of high power density, long cycle life, and fast charging/discharging rates, but relatively low energy density limits their practical application prospects. The key to improving the energy density of supercapacitors is to develop electrode materials with excellent performance. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) used for electrochemical energy storage have emerged as a research hotspot due to their adjustable microstructure, porosity, and high specific surface area. To address the demands of high-performance supercapacitors, composite nanomaterials can be prepared by rationally designing MOFs. Herein, CoNi-MOF nano-blocks are grown on the carbon cloth, and ultrathin NiMo layered double hydroxides (NiMo-LDH) nanosheets are further anchored on its surfaces to form a honeycomb porous heterostructure (NiMo-LDH@CoNi-MOF). The porous heterostructures increase the electrochemically active specific surface area and shorten the charge transfer distance, possessing ultra-high capacitance of 15.6 F/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2. Furthermore, utilizing annealed activated carbon cloth (AAC) as the negative electrode, the assembled NiMo-LDH@CoNi-MOF-2//AAC asymmetric supercapacitor possesses an energy density of 1.10 mWh/cm2 at a power density of 4 mW/cm2, and a capacitance retention of 97.8 % after 10,000 cycles. This material exhibits distinctive nanostructures and favorable electrochemical characteristics, providing a unique idea for preparing supercapacitors with high energy density and power density.

Different spectrophotometric methods for simultaneous quantitation of Vericiguat and its alkaline degradation product: a comparative study with greenness profile assessment

Investigations concerning novel drugs and their induced degradation products are necessary for clinical research and quality control in the pharmaceutical industry. Four spectrophotometric techniques have been performed for simultaneous quantitation of Vericiguat (VER) and its alkali-induced degradation product (ADP) without prior separation. Method A is a dual wavelength method (DW) that estimates the absorbance difference at 314-328 nm, and 246-262 nm for VER and ADP; respectively. Method B uses a ratio difference method (RD) to estimate the ratio spectrum's amplitude difference (DP318-342) and (DP284-292) for VER and ADP; respectively. Method C uses a first derivative ratio method (1DD) to estimate the peak ratio spectrum amplitude of the first derivative at 318 and 275 nm for VER and ADP; respectively. Method D uses the mean centering of the ratio spectra (MCR) to estimate amplitude values for VER and ADP at 337 and 292 nm; respectively. In a concentration range of 5.00-50.00 µg/mL for VER and 5.00-100.00 µg/mL for ADP, the methods were validated following ICH criteria and utilized to estimate VER in bulk and its dosage form. The methods' greenness was assessed via three tools: the green analytical procedure index (GAPI), analytical eco-scale, and analytical greenness assessment (AGREE).

Degradation of Nitrobenzene by Mackinawite through a Sequential Two-Step Reduction and Oxidation Process

Mackinawite (FeS) has gained increasing interest due to its potential application in contaminant removal by either reduction or oxidation processes. This study further demonstrated the efficiency of FeS in degrading nitrobenzene (ArNO2) via a sequential two-step reduction and oxidation process under neutral conditions. In the reduction stage, FeS rapidly reduced ArNO2 to aniline (ArNH2), with nitrosobenzene (ArNO) and phenylhydroxylamine (ArNHOH) serving as the intermediates. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis indicated that both Fe(II) and S(II) in FeS contributed electrons to the reduction of ArNO2. In the subsequent oxidation stage with oxygen, by addition of 0.5 mM tripolyphosphate (TPP), ArNH2 generated in the reduction process could be effectively oxidized to aminophenols by hydroxyl radicals (•OH), which would undergo eventual mineralization via ring-cleavage reactions. TPP exerted a favorable role in enhancing •OH production for ArNH2 degradation by promoting the formation of the dissolved Fe(II)-TPP complex, thus enhancing the homogeneous Fenton reaction. Additionally, TPP adsorption inhibited the surface oxidation reactivity of FeS due to the change of Fe(II) coordination. Finally, the effective degradation of ArNO2 by FeS in actual groundwater was demonstrated by using this sequential reduction and oxidation approach. These research findings provide a theoretical basis for a new FeS-based remediation approach, offering an alternative way for comprehensive removal of ArNO2.

Development of a high-performance label-free electrochemical immunosensor for early cancer diagnosis using anti-CEA/Ag-MOF/GO/GCE nanocomposite

In order to detect carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) as a tumor marker in lung cancer for early cancer diagnosis, this study aimed to develop a label-free electrochemical immunosensor based on the immobilization of an Anti-CEA antibody on a metal-organic framework (MOF)-graphene oxide nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (Anti-CEA/Ag-MOF/GO/GCE). Ag-MOF/GO nanocomposite was prepared on the GCE surface using the ultrasonic irradiation method, and Anti-CEA antibody was subsequently immobilized on the surface. Analysis of the crystal structure and morphology of the modified electrode using FE-SEM and XRD revealed that the correct combination of GO nanosheets and Ag-MOF nanoparticles produced a high surface area to trap the antibodies. Electrochemical tests utilizing the CV and DPV methods revealed that the immunosensor's sensitivity, stability, and selectivity were improved by Anti-CEA/Ag-MOF/GO/GCE. Results showed that, with a detection limit of 0.005 ng/mL, the change in the reduction peak current was inversely correlated with the logarithm concentration of CEA in the range of 10-3 to 5000 ng/mL. The suggested CEA immunosensor's applicability in a human serum sample was investigated, and findings of analytical studies via standard addition technique for both ELISA and DPV assays revealed that significant agreement existed between the outcomes of the two assays. Additionally, the recoveries ranged from 99.00% to 99.25%, and all relative standard deviations (RSDs) for the sample detections were below 5.01%, indicating satisfactory accuracy in results measured with the proposed CEA immunosensor, indicating that the prepared CEA immunosensor in this study can be used in clinical applications and human fluids.

Nanoparticles and nanofiltration for wastewater treatment: From polluted to fresh water

Water pollution poses significant threats to both ecosystems and human health. Mitigating this issue requires effective treatment of domestic wastewater to convert waste into bio-fertilizers and gas. Neglecting liquid waste treatment carries severe consequences for health and the environment. This review focuses on intelligent technologies for water and wastewater treatment, targeting waterborne diseases. It covers pollution prevention and purification methods, including hydrotherapy, membrane filtration, mechanical filters, reverse osmosis, ion exchange, and copper-zinc cleaning. The article also highlights domestic purification, field techniques, heavy metal removal, and emerging technologies like nanochips, graphene, nanofiltration, atmospheric water generation, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs)-based cleaning. Emphasizing water cleaning's significance for ecosystem protection and human health, the review discusses pollution challenges and explores the integration of wastewater treatment, coagulant processes, and nanoparticle utilization in management. It advocates collaborative efforts and innovative research for freshwater preservation and pollution mitigation. Innovative biological systems, combined with filtration, disinfection, and membranes, can elevate recovery rates by up to 90%, surpassing individual primary (<10%) or biological methods (≤50%). Advanced treatment methods can achieve up to 95% water recovery, exceeding UN goals for clean water and sanitation (Goal 6). This progress aligns with climate action objectives and safeguards vital water-rich habitats (Goal 13). The future holds promise with advanced purification techniques enhancing water quality and availability, underscoring the need for responsible water conservation and management for a sustainable future.

Schiff base MOFs and their derivatives for sequestration and degradation of pollutants: present and future

Removal of contaminants via adsorption and catalysis have received a significant interest as energy and money-saving solutions for treating the world's wastewater. Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs), a newly discovered class of porous crystalline materials, have demonstrated tremendous promise in the removal and destruction of contaminants for water purification. In order to improve the interactions of MOFs with the target pollutants for their selective removal and degradation, the Schiff base functionalities emerged as promising active sites. Through pre- and post-synthetic alterations, Schiff base functionalities are integrated into the pore cages of MOF adsorbent materials. To understand the adsorptive/catalytic mechanism, potential interactions between the Schiff base sites and the target pollutants are discussed. Based on cutting-edge techniques for their synthesis, this paper examines current developments in the creation of Schiff base-functionalized MOFs as innovative materials for adsorptive removal and catalytic degradation of contaminants for water remediation.

A biosensor based on graphene oxide nanocomposite for determination of carcinoembryonic antigen in colorectal cancer biomarker

Colorectal cancer is still a major global health concern, and early detection and accurate biomarker analyses are critical to its successful management. This paper describes the design and testing of a new biosensor based on a graphene oxide (GO) nanocomposite for the exact measurement of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA), a well-known biomarker for colorectal cancer. The current study attempted to create a highly sensitive immunosensor for sensitive measurement of CEA based on a polypropylene-imine-dendrimer (PPI) and GO nanocomposite on GCE (PPI/GO/GCE). The PPI/GO nanocomposite served as an appropriate biocompatible nanostructure with a large surface area for immobilizing carcinoembryonic antigen (anti-CEA) and bovine serum albumin (BSA) molecules (BSA/anti-CEA/PPI/GO/GCE), thereby promoting the selectivity of electrochemical immunosensors, according to structural and electrochemical studies. Results showed that the BSA/anti-CEA/PPI/GO/GCE as a selective, sensitive, and stable immunosensor revealed a wide linear response from 0.001 to 2000 ng/mL, and a limit of detection of 0.3 pg/mL, which indicated comparable or better performance towards the CEA immunosensors in recent reports in the literature. This was due to the synergetic effect of the GO nanosheets and PPI with porous structure and more conductivity. Analytical results showed values of RSD (4.49%-5.04%) and recovery (90.00%-99.98%) are suitable for effective and accurate practical assessments in CEA in clinical samples. The capacity of the BSA/anti-CEA/PPI/GO/GCE to determine CEA in human blood was studied.

Achieving enhanced sensitivity and accuracy in carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) detection as an indicator of cancer monitoring using thionine/chitosan/graphene oxide nanocomposite-modified electrochemical immunosensor

The current study has focused on electrochemical immunosensing of carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) employing an immobilized antibody on a thionine, chitosan, or graphene oxide nanocomposite modified glassy carbon electrode (anti-CEA/THi-CS-GO/GCE) as an indicator of cancer monitoring. THi-CS-GO nanocomposites were made using ultrasonication, and analyses of their morphology and crystal structure using SEM, FTIR, and XRD showed that thionine and chitosan molecules were intercalated with stacking interactions with both the top and bottom of GO nanosheets. Electrochemical experiments revealed anti-CEA, THi-CS-GO/GCE to have exceptional sensitivity and selectivity towards CEA compounds. The detection limit value was established to be 0.8 pg/mL when it was discovered that variations in the decrease peak current were directly proportional to the logarithm concentration of CEA over a wide range from 10-3 to 104 ng/mL. Results of testing the immunosensor's application capability for detecting CEA in a sample of human serum show that ELISA and DPV results are very congruent. The produced immunosensor demonstrated adequate immunosensor precision in determining CEA in prepared genuine samples of human serum and clinical applications.

Superior functionality of niobium pentoxide nano-rod/tripod photocatalyst synthesized using polyethyleneimine as a soft template for the abatement of methylene blue under UV and visible irradiation

Polyethyleneimine (PEI) capping agent-cum-template-mediated synthesis of niobium oxide nanoparticles is reported to explore its impact on the resultant morphology, porosity, crystallinity, phase complexation, and thus on the photocatalytic activity. The resultant niobium oxides calcined at 800°C and 1000°C crystallized into highly ordered nano-rod/tripod nanostructure with inter-rod angle <120° having orthorhombic phase and heavily agglomerated rod-like nanostructures having monoclinic crystal phase, respectively. Contrary to the expectations, the nano-rod/tripods showed superior photocatalytic degradation kinetics and high adsorption of methylene blue dye in the hydrocolloid than formerly reported monoclinic nanoparticles. The best adsorption capability and photocatalytic activity are observed for the sample calcined at 800°C, resulting in a combined degradation efficiency of 98.8% of methylene blue dye. The adsorption characteristics, stability of the hydrocolloid system, the existence of oxygen vacancies, and the distinct morphology of the photocatalytic nano-rod/tripods are mainly responsible for this behavior. The process and the performance of unique nanostructure over others presents a superior alternative.

Quercetin suppresses retinoblastoma cell proliferation and invasion and facilitates oxidative stress-induced apoptosis through the miR-137/FNDC5 axis

Retinoblastoma (RB) constitutes a prevalent malignancy in clinic and usually occurs in children under the age of 5 years old. The increased frequency of malignant tumor metastases and the delayed diagnosis and treatment caused unsatisfactory therapeutic efficiency. Quercetin was formerly identified to impede tumor growth in certain malignancies. Our study attempted to investigate the effects and mechanisms of quercetin in Rb development, in order to provide an effective clinical therapeutic approach. Rb cell lines (WER1-RB1 and Y79) were incubated with different concentrations of quercetin, and then cell proliferation, invasion, apoptosis, and oxidative stress were determined. It was showed that quercetin restrained Rb cell proliferation and invasion, and induced cell apoptosis and oxidative stress in a dose dependent manner. Moreover, we found that quercetin incubation upregulated miR-137 expression in Rb cells. MiR-137 inhibition abrogated quercetin-mediated inhibition of Rb cell progression. Furthermore, dual-luciferase reporter gene assay validated that fibronectin type III domain-containing protein 5 (FNDC5) was a target for miR-137. MiR-137 overexpression restrained proliferation and invasion, and enhanced apoptosis and oxidative stress in Rb cells, whereas FNDC5 overexpression abrogated these effects. Additionally, nude mice were injected with WER1-RB1 cells to establish a xenograft tumor model, and then treated with 50 or 100 mg/kg quercetin. Quercetin treatment mitigated xenograft tumor growth in nude mice. In conclusion, quercetin restrained proliferation and invasion, and induced apoptosis and oxidative stress in Rb cells through regulating the miR-137/FNDC5 pathway. We expected that our study could provide an effective approach for Rb treatment. However, quercetin and miR-137 may have off-target effects in Rb cells, and our study still has certain limitations. Therefore, we will investigate the effects of quercetin on other signaling pathways in Rb cells and explore the application of combination therapy in follow-up experiments, in order to provide a rigorous research basis for the treatment of Rb with quercetin.

Quinone-amine polymer nanospheres with enhanced redox activity for aqueous proton storage

One of the biggest obstacles to the development of aqueous proton batteries (APBs), despite numerous optimization techniques, is the preparation and use of high-performance electrode materials. In this work, to improve the high solubility, limited capacity and poor cycle life of small organic molecules in APBs, homogeneous dispersed quinone-amine polymer nanospheres (PQANS) (average diameter: 220 nm) were synthesized by a polymerization reaction based on 3,3'-diaminobenzidine (DAB) and benzoquinone (BQ), making them suitable for proton storage in aqueous systems. As an anode for APBs, the obtained PQANS exhibits an improved reversible capacity of 126.2 mAh/g at 1 A/g after 300 cycles. The durable stable measurement of PQANS at 10 A/g was also conducted with a specific capacity of 66.8 mAh/g after 12,000 cycles. A series of in situ or ex situ measurements were used to establish the superior H+ storage mechanism of PQANS. A novel reaction mechanism of redox enhancement was revealed due to the existence of more carbonyl groups after the first cycle. Theoretical calculations were conducted to help illustrate the principle of binding protons with functional groups in PQANS. Finally, a PQANS anode-based aqueous proton full battery was constructed to demonstrate its potential application, which exhibits a specific capacity of 50.6 mAh/g at 1 A/g (600 cycles). This work provides a reference for preparing high-performance polymer-based electrode materials in aqueous batteries.

A state-of-the-art analysis of pharmacological delivery and artificial intelligence techniques for inner ear disease treatment

Over the last several decades, both the academic and therapeutic fields have seen significant progress in the delivery of drugs to the inner ear due to recent delivery methods established for the systemic administration of drugs in inner ear treatment. Novel technologies such as nanoparticles and hydrogels are being investigated, in addition to the traditional treatment methods. Intracochlear devices, which utilize current developments in microsystems technology, are on the horizon of inner ear drug delivery methods and are designed to provide medicine directly into the inner ear. These devices are used for stem cell treatment, RNA interference, and the delivery of neurotrophic factors and steroids during cochlear implantation. An in-depth analysis of artificial neural networks (ANNs) in pharmaceutical research may be found in ANNs for Drug Delivery, Design, and Disposition. This prediction tool has a great deal of promise to assist researchers in more successfully designing, developing, and delivering successful medications because of its capacity to learn and self-correct in a very complicated environment. ANN achieved a high level of accuracy exceeding 0.90, along with a sensitivity of 95% and a specificity of 100%, in accurately distinguishing illness. Additionally, the ANN model provided nearly perfect measures of 0.99%. Nanoparticles exhibit potential as a viable therapeutic approach for bacterial infections that are challenging to manage, such as otitis media. The utilization of ANNs has the potential to enhance the effectiveness of nanoparticle therapy, particularly in the realm of automated identification of otitis media. Polymeric nanoparticles have demonstrated effectiveness in the treatment of prevalent bacterial infections in pediatric patients, suggesting significant potential for forthcoming therapeutic interventions. Finally, this study is based on a research of how inner ear diseases have been treated in the last ten years (2012-2022) using machine learning.

Hybrid chitosan/molecularly imprinted polymer hydrogel beads doped with iron for selective ibuprofen adsorption

Pharmaceutical pollutants are a group of emerging contaminants frequently found in water streams. In this study, the composite chitosan beads with incorporated molecularly imprinted polymers (monoliths or microparticles) and iron(III) hydroxide were fabricated to remove ibuprofen from aqueous solutions. The adsorptive properties were investigated in different conditions to evaluate the influence of solution pH, adsorbent dose, ibuprofen initial concentration, adsorption time, and temperature. The highest adsorption capacity (79.41 mg g-1), about twice as large as that for the chitosan beads without polymers (39.42 mg g-1), was obtained for the ones containing monoliths imprinted with ibuprofen. The theoretical maximum adsorption capacity of 103.93 mg g-1 was obtained based on the experiments in optimal pH 5. The adsorption of ibuprofen on the hybrid hydrogel beads followed the Freundlich isotherm and pseudo-second-order kinetic models. The process was found as endothermic and thermodynamically spontaneous. The adsorbent with a molecularly imprinted polymer retained its selectivity in the presence of other molecules. The imprinted cavities, chitosan functional groups, and iron hydroxide were presumably responsible for interactions with ibuprofen molecules. Additionally, the effectiveness of the adsorbent did not change significantly in real water samples and remained at a satisfactory level for up to four desorption-adsorption cycles.

Wastewater reuse in agriculture: Prospects and challenges

Sustainable water recycling and wastewater reuse are urgent nowadays considering water scarcity and increased water consumption through human activities. In 2015, United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6 (UN SDG6) highlighted the necessity of recycling wastewater to guarantee water availability for individuals. Currently, wastewater irrigation (WWI) of crops and agricultural land appears essential. The present work overviews the quality of treated wastewater in terms of soil microbial activities, and discusses challenges and benefits of WWI in line with wastewater reuse in agriculture and aquaculture irrigation. Combined conventional-advanced wastewater treatment processes are specifically deliberated, considering the harmful impacts on human health arising from WWI originating from reuse of contaminated water (salts, organic pollutants, toxic metals, and microbial pathogens i.e., viruses and bacteria). The comprehensive literature survey revealed that, in addition to the increased levels of pathogen and microbial threats to human wellbeing, poorly-treated wastewater results in plant and soil contamination with toxic organic/inorganic chemicals, and microbial pathogens. The impact of long-term emerging pollutants like plastic nanoparticles should also be established in further studies, with the development of standardized analytical techniques for such hazardous chemicals. Likewise, the reliable, long-term and extensive judgment on heavy metals threat to human beings's health should be explored in future investigations.

Electro-sensing layer constructed of a WO3/CuO nanocomposite, for the electrochemical determination of 2-phenylphenol fungicide

The abstract highlights the development of an electroanalytical sensor for the detection of 2-phenylphenol (2-PPL) as a contaminant. The novelty of the experiment lies in the utilization of a 1-D nanostructured WO3/CuO nanocomposite integrated with a carbon paste electrode (CPE). The hydrothermal method was used to synthesize the WO3 NPs, which were then characterized using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS) techniques. Tungsten oxides (WO3) have been the subject of extensive study because of their many desirable characteristics, including their ease of preparation, tunable stoichiometry, crystal structure, particle morphology, 2.6 eV bandgap, excellent photocatalytic oxidation capacity, non-toxic nature, and widespread availability. The narrow band gap in CuO makes it an ideal sensing material. Copper oxide has applications in many different industries because it is a semiconductor metal with a narrow band gap in the spectrum of 1.2-1.9 eV and unique optical, electrical, and magnetic properties. Techniques like cyclic voltammetry (CV), and square wave voltammetry (SWV) were used. Real sample analysis was carried out in real-world samples like different types of soil, vegetables, and water. The electroanalytical sensor showed outstanding catalytic behavior by enhancing the peak current of the 2-phenylphenol with the potential shift to the less positive side compared to the unmodified carbon paste electrode in the presence of pH 7.0 phosphate buffer solution (PB). Throughout the experimental study, double distilled was used. Various electro-kinetic parameters like pH, accumulation time study, scan rate, concentration variation, standard heterogeneous rate constant, and participation of electrons, accumulation time, and transfer coefficient have been studied at WO3/CuO/CPE. The limit of detection was quantified together with the limit of quantification. Possible electrochemical oxidation mechanism of the toxic molecule was depicted. Overall, this research contributes to the field of electroanalytical sensing and offers potential applications in environmental monitoring.

Development of recycled and miniaturized electroanalytical sensor: Probing isoniazid determination in environmental water matrices

Surface water pollution has become relevant because growing population and intense industrial activities. Thus, to protect the environment from contamination, recently the electroanalytical sensors that require small sample volume and easy preparation have shown a prominent performance for pharmaceuticals monitoring. For this purpose, a miniaturized electrochemical platform was developed based on recycling obsolete computer integrated circuits (microchips), fitting with the ideals of green chemistry and circular economy. The gold microelectrodes array (Au-μEA) was easily exposed by polishing the device surface and then characterized by optical microscopy, scanning electron microscopy and cyclic voltammetry. To enhance the analytical performance for isoniazid detection, the Au-μEA was modified with electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (ERGO). The developed sensor presented a linear range between 5 and 100 μmol L-1 and a limit of detection of 1.38 μmol L-1 demonstrating a reliable performance. Looking to its environmental application, the ERGO/Au-μEA sensor was used for isoniazid quantification in lagoon, river, tap water and synthetic effluent spiked samples with recovery values between 92.5 and 108.4%. Thus, this research field opens up new possibilities in global water-related issues contributing with innovative sustainable solutions.

Recent progress and perspectives of metal organic frameworks (MOFs) for the detection of food contaminants

Over the past decades, increasing research in metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) being a large family of highly tunable porous materials with intrinsic physical properties, show propitious results for a wide range of applications in adsorption, separation, electrocatalysis, and electrochemical sensors. MOFs have received substantial attention in electrochemical sensors owing to their large surface area, active metal sites, high chemical and thermal stability, and tunable structure with adjustable pore diameters. Benefiting from the superior properties, MOFs and MOF-derived carbon materials act as promising electrode material for the detection of food contaminants. Although several reviews have been reported based on MOF and its nanocomposites for the detection of food contaminants using various analytical methods such as spectrometric, chromatographic, and capillary electrophoresis. But there no significant review has been devoted to MOF/and its derived carbon-based electrodes using electrochemical detection of food contaminants. Here we review and classify MOF-based electrodes over the period between 2017 and 2022, concerning synthetic procedures, electrode fabrication process, and the possible mechanism for detection of the food contaminants which include: heavy metals, antibiotics, mycotoxins, and pesticide residues. The merits and demerits of MOF as electrode material and the need for the fabrication of MOF and its composites/derivatives for the determination of food contaminants are discussed in detail. At last, the current opportunities, key challenges, and prospects in MOF for the development of smart sensing devices for future research in this field are envisioned.

An Overview to Molecularly Imprinted Electrochemical Sensors for the Detection of Bisphenol A

Bisphenol A (BPA) is an industrial chemical used extensively in plastics and resins. However, its endocrine-disrupting properties pose risks to human health and the environment. Thus, accurate and rapid detection of BPA is crucial for exposure monitoring and risk mitigation. Molecularly imprinted electrochemical sensors (MIES) have emerged as a promising tool for BPA detection due to their high selectivity, sensitivity, affordability, and portability. This review provides a comprehensive overview of recent advances in MIES for BPA detection. We discuss the operating principles, fabrication strategies, materials, and methods used in MIES. Key findings show that MIES demonstrate detection limits comparable or superior to conventional methods like HPLC and GC-MS. Selectivity studies reveal excellent discrimination between BPA and structural analogs. Recent innovations in nanomaterials, novel monomers, and fabrication techniques have enhanced sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. However, limitations exist in reproducibility, selectivity, and stability. While challenges remain, MIES provide a low-cost portable detection method suitable for on-site BPA monitoring in diverse sectors. Further optimization of sensor fabrication and characterization will enable the immense potential of MIES for field-based BPA detection.

Advancement in precision diagnosis and therapeutic for triple-negative breast cancer: Harnessing diagnostic potential of CRISPR-cas & engineered CAR T-cells mediated therapeutics

Cancer is characterized by uncontrolled cell growth, disrupted regulatory pathways, and the accumulation of genetic mutations. These mutations across different types of cancer lead to disruptions in signaling pathways and alterations in protein expression related to cellular growth and proliferation. This review highlights the AKT signaling cascade and the retinoblastoma protein (pRb) regulating cascade as promising for novel nanotheranostic interventions. Through synergizing state-of-the-art gene editing tools like the Clustered Regularly Interspaced Short Palindromic Repeats (CRISPR)-Cas system with nanomaterials and targeting AKT, there is potential to enhance cancer diagnostics significantly. Furthermore, the integration of modified CAR-T cells into multifunctional nanodelivery systems offers a promising approach for targeted cancer inhibition, including the eradication of cancer stem cells (CSCs). Within the context of highly aggressive and metastatic Triple-negative Breast Cancer (TNBC), this review specifically focuses on devising innovative nanotheranostics. For both pre-clinical and post-clinical TNBC detection, the utilization of the CRISPR-Cas system, guided by RNA (gRNA) and coupled with a fluorescent reporter specifically designed to detect TNBC's mutated sequence, could be promising. Additionally, a cutting-edge approach involving the engineering of TNBC-specific iCAR and syn-Notch CAR T-cells, combined with the co-delivery of a hybrid polymeric nano-liposome encapsulating a conditionally replicative adenoviral vector (CRAdV) against CSCs, could present an intriguing intervention strategy. This review thus paves the way for exciting advancements in the field of nanotheranostics for the treatment of TNBC and beyond.

Preparation of β-Cyclodextrin Functionalized Platform for Monitoring Changes in Potassium Content in Perspiration

The monitoring of potassium ion (K+) levels in human sweat can provide valuable insights into electrolyte balance and muscle fatigue non-invasively. However, existing laboratory techniques for sweat testing are complex, while wearable sensors face limitations like drift, fouling and interference from ions such as Na+. This work develops printed electrodes using β-cyclodextrin functionalized reduced graphene oxide (β-CD-RGO) for selective K+ quantification in sweat. The β-CD prevents the aggregation of RGO sheets while also providing selective binding sites for K+ capture. Electrodes were fabricated by screen printing the β-CD-RGO ink onto conductive carbon substrates. Material characterization confirmed the successful functionalization of RGO with β-CD. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) showed enhanced electrochemical behavior for β-CD-RGO-printed electrodes compared with bare carbon and RGO. Sensor optimization resulted in a formulation with 30% β-CD-RGO loading. The printed electrodes were drop-casted with an ion-selective polyvinyl chloride (PVC) membrane. A linear range from 10 μM to 100 mM was obtained along with a sensitivity of 54.7 mV/decade. The sensor showed good reproducibility over 10 cycles in 10 mM KCl. Minimal interference from 100 mM Na+ and other common sweat constituents validated the sensor's selectivity. On-body trials were performed by mounting the printed electrodes on human subjects during exercise. The K+ levels measured in sweat were found to correlate well with serum analysis, demonstrating the sensor's ability for non-invasive electrolyte monitoring. Overall, the facile synthesis of stable β-CD-RGO inks enables the scalable fabrication of wearable sensors for sweat potassium detection.

Self-polarized schorl optimizing TiO2 for photocatalytic persulfate activation and organic pollutants degradation

Photocatalytic activation of persulfate has exhibited tremendous potential in water purification because of its green and environmentally friendly process. However, this process often exhibits low activation efficiencies and difficult recovery of the photocatalyst. Herein, schorl-supported nano-TiO2 composite photocatalysts (S/TiO2) were prepared by a mechanical grinding method for efficient activation of potassium monopersulfate (PMS). The anatase TiO2 nanoparticles with particle size of approximately 30 nm was uniformly loaded on the surface of schorl via forming Si-O-Ti bonds. The S/TiO2 assisted with PMS (S/TiO2-PMS) exhibited remarkable degradation performance and stability. In this system (S/TiO2-PMS), the C/C0 value of phenol solution (10 ppm) were decreased to 0.070 and 0 after 30 min and 90 min of irradiation, where the degradation extent were 93.0% and 100% respectively. The rate of phenol degradation with S/TiO2-PMS was 12.6 times that seen with TiO2-PMS. The oxidation active species were holes and SO4•- in S/TiO2-PMS system subjected to simulated sunlight. It was demonstrated that the polarization electric field of the schorl enhanced the separation efficiency of the photoinduced electrons and holes for improving the performance of the S/TiO2-PMS. On the other hand, the transformations of Fe3+ and Fe2+ on the schorl surface further promotes the activation of PMS. This work provides a new choice for designing TiO2-based photocatalytic persulfate activation system targeting the field of advanced oxidation water treatment.

Preparation of SnO2-Sb/attapulgite (AP) clay particulate electrode for efficient phenol electrochemical oxidation

A novel SnO2-Sb/AP (attapulgite) particle electrode was prepared for three-dimensional electrocatalytic oxidation (3D/EO) of organic pollutants using a co-sintering method. The electrochemical properties and micromorphology were determined using polarization, cyclic voltammetry (CV), and field emission scanning electron microscope (FE-SEM), and compared with activated carbon (AC), AP, and TiO2/AP particle electrodes. Besides, their potential application in the electrochemical degradation of phenol was investigated. The SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrode exhibited higher electrochemical activity than other particle electrodes due to its large number of active sites, low transfer coefficient (α, 0.12), and high-volt ampere charge (q*, 1.18 C·cm-2). The electrochemical CODCr degradation efficiency (100%) of phenol on SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrodes is much higher than for other particle electrodes. Moreover, an excellent stability of the SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrode is also verified by repeated experiments. These results indicate that the SnO2-Sb/AP particle electrodes broaden the application area of clays and are expected to be a promising method for 3D/EO.

Impedimetric aptasensor based on MOF based composite for measuring of carcinoembryonic antigen as a tumor biomarker

In this research, gold nanoparticle (GNPs)-modified metal-organic framework/reduced graphene oxide (MOF(801)/rGO) hybrid was employed to design a new aptasensor for carcinoembryonic antigen (CEA) quantification in biological sample. The sensing ability of the electrode for CEA biomarker was examined with electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry procedures. Besides, CEA was electrochemically quantified by the EIS method. With respect to the high surface-to-volume ratio of MOF(801) and the good electron transfer ability of rGO, the proposed sensor displayed notable sensitivity and reliability in the CEA analysis. The derived electrode showed an appreciable detection limit of 0.8 pg L-1 using EIS protocol. In addition, the present aptasensor revealed diverse advantages including anti-interference property, wide linear range (0.0025-0.25 ng L-1), convenience and high efficiency toward CEA quantification. More importantly, the performance of the suggested assay remains unchanged in analysis of CEA in body fluids. The established assay demonstrates that the suggested biosensor is a promising device in clinical diagnosis.

Self-assembled Gallic acid loaded lecithin-chitosan hybrid nanostructured gel as a potential tool against imiquimod-induced psoriasis

Increased thickness of the skin and hyperproliferation of keratinocyte cell is the main obstacle in the treatment of psoriasis. Gallic Acid (GA) has shown efficacious results against the hyperproliferation of keratinocytes while lipid-polymer loaded hybrid nanoparticles (LPHNs) have an edge over lipidic and polymeric nanoparticles considering drug loading, controlled release, stability, and retention. The LPHNs were optimized using Box-Behnken method and was further characterized by FTIR, DSC and Zetasizer. The optimized preparation demonstrated a size of 170.5 ± 0.087 nm and a PDI of 0.19 ± 0.0015, respectively. The confocal study has suggested that the hybrid nanosystem enhanced the drug penetration into the deeper layer with a higher drug release of 79 ± 0.001% as compared to the gallic acid-loaded gel. In addition, the formulation significantly reduced PASI score and splenomegaly without causing any serious irritation. The morphological study of the spleen suggested that the prepared formulation has well controlled the disease compared to the marketed formulation while maintaining a normal level of immune cells after treatment. Hence GALPHN could be accepted as one of the excellent vehicles for the topical conveyance of GA (gallic acid) due to enhanced penetration, and good retention, along with fewer side effects and higher efficacy of the GALPHN gel against imiquimod (IMQ) induced psoriasis.

Enhancing the efficiency of Ni(II), Cd(II), and Cu(II) adsorption from aqueous solution using schist/alginate composite: batch and continuous studies

The main aim of this research is focused on the synthesis of schist/alginate composite (SC/AL) adsorbent and its utilization for the removal of Ni(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) from waste streams using batch and column processes. The characterization of developed adsorbent was performed by X-ray fluorescence, X-ray diffraction, FTIR, and BET analyses. The most influential operating parameters (pH, contact time, temperature and initial adsorbate concentration) on the adsorption capacity of pollutants were examined to evaluate the performance of developed adsorbent. The kinetic and equilibrium adsorption results at pH 5.0 indicated that SC/AL composite had good adsorption capacity (qmax) for Ni(II), Cu(II), and Cd(II) estimated at 124.79 mg/g, 111.78 mg/g, and 119.78 mg/g, respectively. From the kinetic viewpoint, the good fit of pseudo-first-order kinetic model to the kinetic adsorption data indicated that dominant interaction of heavy metals with SC/AL composite was physisorption. The results of thermodynamic studies indicated that the adsorption of heavy metals onto SC/AL composite was endothermic and spontaneous in nature. The adsorption capacity of developed adsorbent could still reach relatively 85% of the original one after completing fifth cycle. Therefore, the reusability results of SC/AL composite were quite satisfied, making the developed adsorbent a commercially attractive and green method. Finally, in column studies, the effect of initial concentration of pollutants at pH 5.0 on the removal of heavy metal ions was investigated. The Thomas and Yoon-Nelson models provided a satisfactory explanation for the results of column data.

Vanadia as an electron-hole recombination inhibitor on fibrous silica-titania for selective hole oxidation of ciprofloxacin and Congo red photodegradation

Vanadia (V2O5)-incorporated fibrous silica-titania (V/FST) catalysts, which were successfully synthesized using a hydrothermal method followed by the impregnation of V2O5. The catalysts were then characterized using numerous techniques, including X-ray diffraction, field emission scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, nitrogen adsorption-desorption analyses, ultraviolet-visible diffuse reflectance spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and photoluminescence (PL) analyses. The study found that varying the amount of V2O5 (1-10 wt%) had a significant impact on the physicochemical properties of the FST, which in turn improved the photodegradation efficiency of two organic compounds, ciprofloxacin (CIP) and congo red (CR). 5V/FST demonstrated the best performance in degrading 10 mg L-1 of CIP (83%) and CR (100%) at pH 3 using 0.375 g L-1 catalyst under visible light irradiation within 180 min. The highest photoactivity of 5V/FST is mainly due to higher crystallinity and the highest number of V2O5-FST interactions. Furthermore, as demonstrated by PL analysis, the 5V/FST catalyst has the most significant impact on interfacial charge transfer and reduces electron-hole recombination. The photodegradation of both contaminants follows the Langmuir-Hinshelwood pseudo-first-order model, according to the kinetic study. The scavenger investigation demonstrated that hydroxyl radicals and holes dominated species in the system, indicating that the catalyst effectively generated reactive species for pollutant degradation. A possible mechanism was also identified for FST and 5V/FST. Interestingly, V2O5 acts as an electron-hole recombination inhibitor on FST for selective hole oxidation of ciprofloxacin and congo red photodegradation. Finally, the degradation efficiency of the catalyst remained relatively stable even after five cyclic experiments, indicating its potential for long-term use in environmental remediation.

An overview on nanoplatforms for statins delivery: Perspectives for safe and effective therapy

Statins are the most widely used pharmacological agents for reducing blood cholesterol levels and treating atherosclerotic cardiovascular diseases. Most of the statins' derivatives have been limited by water solubility, bioavailability, and oral absorption, which has led to adverse effects on several organs, especially at high doses. As an approach to reducing statin intolerance, achieving a stable formulation with improved efficacy and bioavailability at low doses has been suggested. Nanotechnology-based formulations may provide a therapeutic benefit over traditional formulations in terms of potency and biosafety. Nanocarriers can provide tailored delivery platforms for statins, thereby enhancing the localized biological effects and lowering the risk of undesired side effects while boosting statin's therapeutic index. Furthermore, tailored nanoparticles can deliver the active cargo to the desired site, which culminates in reducing off-targeting and toxicity. Nanomedicine could also provide opportunities for therapeutic methods by personalized medicine. This review delves into the existing data on the potential improvement of statin therapy using nano-formulations.

Modified air-Fenton with MIL-88A for chemical oxygen demand treatment in used coolant oil

Coolant oil from auto part manufacturing contains additives resulting in high chemical oxygen demand (COD) in wastewater. In this study, COD treatment of coolant oil was investigated in a metal-organic framework (MOF) with MIL-88A by a modified air-Fenton (MAF) process by varying synthetic coolant oil concentrations (1-5%), pH (3-9), air-flow rate (1-2 L/min), amount of MIL-88A (0.2-1.0 g), and reaction time (30-180 min). The results were analyzed using central composite design (CCD) and response surface methodology (RSM) using Minitab ver. 19. The characteristic MIL-88A was characterized by XRD that showed a spindle-like shape with 2θ at 10.2° and 13.0°. The FTIR spectrum revealed the vibrational frequencies at Fe-O (564 cm-1), C-O (1391 and 1600 cm-1), and C = O (1216 and 1710 cm-1). The optimum treatment efficiency was studied from 30 CCD conditions in the presence of coolant oil (5%, COD ~ 132,000 mg/L), pH (9), air flow rate (2 L/min), and MIL-88A (1 g) within 177 min. The results obtained from the experiment and the COD prediction were found to be 92.64% and 93.45%, respectively. The main mechanism of iron(III) in MIL-88A is proposed to be the production of hydroxyl radical (·OH) that oxidizes the organic matter in the coolant oil. Moreover, the MAF process was applied to the used industrial coolant oil and was found to be 62.59% efficient.

Application of Semiconductor Metal Oxide in Chemiresistive Methane Gas Sensor: Recent Developments and Future Perspectives

The application of semiconductor metal oxides in chemiresistive methane gas sensors has seen significant progress in recent years, driven by their promising sensitivity, miniaturization potential, and cost-effectiveness. This paper presents a comprehensive review of recent developments and future perspectives in this field. The main findings highlight the advancements in material science, sensor fabrication techniques, and integration methods that have led to enhanced methane-sensing capabilities. Notably, the incorporation of noble metal dopants, nanostructuring, and hybrid materials has significantly improved sensitivity and selectivity. Furthermore, innovative sensor fabrication techniques, such as thin-film deposition and screen printing, have enabled cost-effective and scalable production. The challenges and limitations facing metal oxide-based methane sensors were identified, including issues with sensitivity, selectivity, operating temperature, long-term stability, and response times. To address these challenges, advanced material science techniques were explored, leading to novel metal oxide materials with unique properties. Design improvements, such as integrated heating elements for precise temperature control, were investigated to enhance sensor stability. Strategies and Applications of Graphene and Its Derivatives-Based Electrochemical Sensors in Cancer Diagnosis

Graphene is an emerging nanomaterial increasingly being used in electrochemical biosensing applications owing to its high surface area, excellent conductivity, ease of functionalization, and superior electrocatalytic properties compared to other carbon-based electrodes and nanomaterials, enabling faster electron transfer kinetics and higher sensitivity. Graphene electrochemical biosensors may have the potential to enable the rapid, sensitive, and low-cost detection of cancer biomarkers. This paper reviews early-stage research and proof-of-concept studies on the development of graphene electrochemical biosensors for potential future cancer diagnostic applications. Various graphene synthesis methods are outlined along with common functionalization approaches using polymers, biomolecules, nanomaterials, and synthetic chemistry to facilitate the immobilization of recognition elements and improve performance. Major sensor configurations including graphene field-effect transistors, graphene modified electrodes and nanocomposites, and 3D graphene networks are highlighted along with their principles of operation, advantages, and biosensing capabilities. Strategies for the immobilization of biorecognition elements like antibodies, aptamers, peptides, and DNA/RNA probes onto graphene platforms to impart target specificity are summarized. The use of nanomaterial labels, hybrid nanocomposites with graphene, and chemical modification for signal enhancement are also discussed. Examples are provided to illustrate applications for the sensitive electrochemical detection of a broad range of cancer biomarkers including proteins, circulating tumor cells, DNA mutations, non-coding RNAs like miRNA, metabolites, and glycoproteins. Current challenges and future opportunities are elucidated to guide ongoing efforts towards transitioning graphene biosensors from promising research lab tools into mainstream clinical practice. Continued research addressing issues with reproducibility, stability, selectivity, integration, clinical validation, and regulatory approval could enable wider adoption. Overall, graphene electrochemical biosensors present powerful and versatile platforms for cancer diagnosis at the point of care.

Targeted therapy of breast tumor by PLGA-based nanostructures: The versatile function in doxorubicin delivery

Breast carcinoma is a molecularly diverse illness, and it is among the most prominent and often reported malignancies in female across the globe. Surgical intervention, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, gene therapy, and endocrine treatment are among the currently viable treatment options for the carcinoma of breast. Chemotherapy is among the most prevalent cancer management strategy. Doxorubicin (DOX) widely employed as a cytostatic medication for the treatment of a variety of malignancies. Despite its widespread acceptance and excellent efficacy against an extensive line up of neoplasia, it has a variety of shortcomings that limit its therapeutic potential in the previously mentioned indications. Employment of nanoparticulate systems has come up as a unique chemo medication delivery strategy and are being considerably explored for the amelioration of breast carcinoma. Polylactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA)-based nano systems are being utilized in a number of areas within the medical research and medication delivery constitutes one of the primary functions for PLGA given their inherent physiochemical attributes, including their aqueous solubility, biocompatibility, biodegradability, versatility in formulation, and limited toxicity. Herein along with the different application of PLGA-based nano formulations in cancer therapy, the present review intends to describe the various research investigations that have been conducted to enumerate the effectiveness of DOX-encapsulated PLGA nanoparticles (DOX-PLGA NPs) as a feasible treatment option for breast cancer.

Cultivation of blue green algae (Arthrospira platensis Gomont, 1892) in wastewater for biodiesel production

The production of biodiesel has become an important issue in the effort to reduce gas emissions due to the climate change crisis; therefore, algae have widely used to produce biodiesel for energy sustainability. The present study represented an effort to assess the ability of the alga Arthrospira platensis to produce fatty acids involved in biofuel (diesel) by cultivation in Zarrouk media enriched with different municipal wastewater concentrations. Wastewater was used in different concentrations (5, 15, 25, 35 and 100% [control]). Five fatty acids from the alga were determined and included in the present study. These were inoleic acid, palmitic acid, oleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid, and docosahexaenoic acid. Impact of different cultivation conditions were studied in terms of observed changes in growth rate, doubling time, total carbohydrate, total protein, chlorophyll a, carotenoids, phycocyanin, allophycocyanin, and phycobiliproteins. Results showed an increase in the values of growth rate, total protein content, chlorophyll a, and levels of carotenoids at all treatments except for carbohydrate content, which decreased with an increasing concentration of wastewater. The high value of doubling time (11.605 days) was recorded at treatment 5%. Fatty acids yields were increased at treatment 5% and 15%. The highest concentrations of fatty acids were 3.108 mg/g for oleic acid, gamma-linolenic acid (28.401 mg/g), docosahexaenoic acid (41.707 mg/g), palmitic acid (1.305 mg/g), and linoleic acid (0.296 mg/g). Moreover, the range of phycocyanin (0.017-0.084 mg/l), allophycocyanin (0.023-0.095 mg/l), and phycobiliproteins (0.041-0.180 mg/l) were obtained in treatment with 15-100%, respectively. Cultivation with municipal wastewater reduced the values of nitrate, phosphate, and electrical conductivity as well as increased dissolved oxygen. Maximum electrical conductivity was recorded in untreated wastewater with algae, while the highest level of dissolved oxygen was noted at 35% concentration. The use of the household wastewater is more environmentally friendly as an alternative of the traditional cultivation techniques used for long-term for biofuel production.

UV and solar-based photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants from ceramics industrial wastewater by Fe-doped ZnS nanoparticles

UV and solar-based photocatalytic degradation of 2,4-dichlorophenol (2,4-DCP) as an organic contaminant in ceramics industry wastewater by ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS NPs was the focus of this research. Nanoparticles were prepared using a chemical precipitation process. The cubic, closed-packed structure of undoped ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS NPs was formed in spherical clusters, according to XRD and SEM investigations. According to optical studies, the optical band gaps of pure ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS nanoparticles are 3.35 and 2.51 eV, respectively, and Fe doping increased the number of carriers with high mobility, improved carrier separation and injection efficiency, and increased photocatalytic activity under UV or visible light. Doping of Fe increased the separation of photogenerated electrons and holes and facilitated charge transfer, according to electrochemical impedance spectroscopy investigations. Photocatalytic degradation studies revealed that in the present pure ZnS and Fe-doped ZnS nanoparticles, 100% treatment of 120 mL of 15 mg/L phenolic compound was obtained after 55- and 45-min UV-irradiation, respectively, and complete treatment was attained after 45 and 35-min solar light irradiation, respectively. Because of the synergistic effects of effective surface area, more effective photo-generated electron and hole separation efficiency, and enhanced electron transfer, Fe-doped ZnS demonstrated high photocatalytic degradation performance. The study of Fe-doped ZnS's practical photocatalytic treatment capability for removing 120 mL of 10 mg/L 2,4-DCP solution made from genuine ceramic industrial wastewater revealed Fe-doped ZnS's excellent photocatalytic destruction of 2,4-DCP from real industrial wastewater.

The performance of a visible light-responsive material Fe3O4/Bi2WO6 cooperating with peroxymonosulfate to degrade bisphenol A

In this study, the visible light-responsive catalysts Fe3O4/Bi2WO6 were prepared and characterized by BET, SEM, EDS, XRD, XPS, and MPMS. The performances of five catalysts (0.05 Fe/Bi, 0.13 Fe/Bi, 0.17 Fe/Bi, 0.21 Fe/Bi, and 0.30 Fe/Bi) for photocatalytic degradation of bisphenol A under visible light (300-W Xe lamp) were compared. Among five catalysts, 0.17 Fe/Bi (the molar ratio of Fe3O4 to Bi2WO6 was 0.17) acquired the highest BPA photocatalytic removal of 90.2% at 120 min. With the synergistic effect between Vis/0.17 Fe/Bi and peroxymonosulfate (PMS), the BPA removal obtained was as high as 100% at 90 min ([BPA] = 100 mg/L, [0.17 Fe/Bi] = 1.25 g/L, [PMS] = 2.0 g/L, and T = 25 °C). After five times reused of 0.17 Fe/Bi, its removal of BPA dropped by 13.4% in presence of PMS, which demonstrated 0.17 Fe/Bi possessed relatively stable performance. High BPA degradation was attributed to the attacking effects of various oxide species (SO4•-, •OH, h+, O2•-) generated in the Fe3O4/Bi2WO6/PMS system under the cooperation of photocatalyst Fe3O4/Bi2WO6 and oxidizing agent PMS.

One-step electrodeposition preparation of boron nitride and samarium co-modified Ti/PbO2 anode with ultra-long lifetime: highly efficient degradation of lincomycin wastewater

Lincomycin (LC) is an extensively applied broad-spectrum antibiotic, and its considerable residues in wastewater have caused a series of environmental problems, which makes degradation of LC wastewater extremely urgent. In this work, we have constructed a novel boron nitride (BN) and samarium (Sm) co-modified Ti/PbO2 as anode for high-performance degradation of LC wastewater. Compared with Ti/PbO2, Ti/PbO2-Sm, and Ti/PbO2-BN electrodes, Ti/PbO2-BN-Sm electrode with smaller pyramidal particles possesses higher oxygen evolution potential (2.32 V), excellent accelerated service life (103 h), and outstanding electrocatalytic activity. The single-factor experiments demonstrate that under optimized conditions (current density of 20 mA.cm-2, 6.0 g L-1 Na2SO4, pH 9, and temperature of 30°C), removal rate and COD degradation rate of LC at 3 h have reached 92.85% and 89.11%, respectively. At the same time, degradation of LC is in accordance with the primary kinetic model. Based on the analysis of high-performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS), four possible degradation pathways are hypothesized. Therefore, efficient electrochemical degradation of LC by using an extremely long-life Ti/PbO2 electrode with high catalytic activity may be a promising method.

Enhancement of physicochemical characterization of nanocomposites on Ag+/Fe2+ codoped hydroxyapatite for antibacterial and anticancer properties

The synthesis of nanosized Ag+/Fe2+ codoped hydroxyapatite (HAp) nanocomposite materials with antibacterial and anticancer characteristics is highly attractive for advancing the development of biological applications. The objective of this study was to evaluate the antibacterial and anticancer characteristics of Ag+/Fe2+ codoped hydroxyapatite materials. We developed a facile chemical precipitation method for the fabrication of Ag+/Fe2+:HAp nanocomposites. The developed Ag+/Fe2+:HAp nanocomposite materials were characterized with Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). For measuring the size of Ag+/Fe2+:HAp nanocomposites, dynamic light scattering (DLS) is an advantageous method. The chemical states and chemical composition of Ag+/Fe2+:HAp were observed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) analysis. In addition, the antibacterial efficacy of Ag+/Fe2+:HAps against Gram-positive (S.aureus), and Gram-negative (S.typhi, and E.Coli) microorganisms is examined in this current study. Ag+/Fe2+:HAp nanocomposite materials have been evaluated for biological toxicity in vitro, and the results showed that the particles were excellent at identifying and killing cancer cells. In this respect, Ag+/Fe2+:HAp nanocomposites significantly impact human colon cancer cells (HT29) while have no effect on normal fibroblast cells (L929).

Solar light driven enhanced photocatalytic treatment of azo dye contaminated water based on Co-doped ZnO/ g-C3N4 nanocomposite

The current research concentrated on the Co-precipitation synthesis of g-C3N4 (CN), ZnO, ZnO/CN, and Co-doped ZnO/CN nanocomposite, as well as the solar light enhanced photocatalytic treatment of Reactive Red 120 (RR120) from genuine wool textile effluent. The 3D flower-like structure of Co-doped ZnO distributed on the surface of CN thin sheets, according to structural studies employing XRD and SEM examinations Electrochemical experiments exhibited that the Co-doped ZnO/CN nanocomposite has a large electroactive surface area. The optical band-gap values of CN, ZnO, ZnO/CN, and Co-doped ZnO/CN nanocomposites were 2.68, 3.13, 2.38, and 2.23 eV, respectively, according to optical characterizations. The synergistic effects and heterojunction produced by Co-doped ZnO and CN can be linked to the narrow gap in nanocomposites. After 75, 60, 50, and 40 min of exposure to solar light, photocatalytic degradation assays for 250 mL of 20 mg/L RR120 solution in the presence of CN, ZnO, ZnO/CN, and Co-doped ZnO/CN nanocomposites demonstrated 100% dye treatment. The applicability of photocatalysts for decolorization of 250 mL of 10 mg/L RR120 prepared from actual wool textile wastewater was investigated, and the results showed that Co-doped ZnO/CN nanocomposites for treatment of RR120 from actual wool textile wastewater were highly efficient at photocatalytic degradation.

Ultrafast Photocatalytic Detoxification of Mustard Gas Simulants by a Mesoporous Metal-Organic Framework with Dangling Porphyrin Molecules

Developing effective catalysts to degrade chemical warfare agents is of great significance. Herein, a mesoporous MIL-101(Cr) composite material dangled with porphyrin molecules (denote as TCPP@MIL-101(Cr), TCPP = tetra(4-carboxyphenyl)porphyrin) is reported, which can be used as a heterogeneous photocatalyst for detoxification of mustard gas simulants 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfide (CEES) to 2-chloroethyl ethyl sulfoxide (CEESO) with a half-life of 1 min. The catalytic performance of TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is comparable to that of homogeneous molecular porphyrin. Mechanistic studies reveal that both 1 O2 and O2 •- are efficiently generated and play vital roles in the oxidation reaction. Gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) are attached to the TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) to further enhance the catalytic activity with a benchmark half-life of 45 s, which is the fastest record so far. A medical mask loaded TCPP@MIL-101(Cr) is fabricated for practical applications, which can selectively photoxidize CEES to CEESO under sunlight and air atmosphere, exhibiting the best degradation performance among the reported fabric-like composite materials.

Adsorption of ibuprofen using waste coffee derived carbon architecture: Experimental, kinetic modeling, statistical and bio-inspired optimization

Pharmaceuticals in water are a growing environmental concern, as they can harm aquatic life and human health. To address this issue, an adsorbent made from coffee waste that effectively removes ibuprofen (a common pharmaceutical pollutant) from wastewater was developed. The experimental adsorption phase was planned using a Design of Experiments approach with Box-Behnken strategy. The relation between the ibuprofen removal efficiency and various independent variables, including adsorbent weight (0.01-0.1 g) and pH (3-9), was evaluated via a regression model with 3-level and 4-factors using the Response surface methodology (RSM) . The optimal ibuprofen removal was achieved after 15 min using 0.1 g adsorbent at 32.4 °C and pH = 6.9. Moreover, the process was optimized using two powerful bio-inspired metaheuristics (Bacterial Foraging Optimization and Virus Optimization Algorithm). The adsorption kinetics, equilibrium, and thermodynamics of ibuprofen onto waste coffee-derived activated carbon were modeled at the identified optimal conditions. The Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherms were implemented to investigate adsorption equilibrium, and thermodynamic parameters were also calculated. According to the Langmuir isotherm model, the adsorbent's maximum adsorption capacity was 350.00 mg g-1 at 35 °C. The findings revealed that the ibuprofen adsorption was well-matched with the Freundlich isotherm model, indicating multilayer adsorption on heterogeneous sites. The computed positive enthalpy value showed the endothermic nature of ibuprofen adsorption at the adsorbate interface.

A sustainable avenue for the synthesis of propargylamines and benzofurans using a Cu-functionalized MIL-101(Cr) as a reusable heterogeneous catalyst

A heterogeneous copper-catalyzed A3 coupling reaction of aldehydes, amines, and alkynes for the synthesis of propargylamines and benzofurans has been developed. Here, the modified metal-organic framework MIL-101(Cr)-SB-Cu complex was chosen as the heterogeneous copper catalyst and prepared via post-synthetic modification of amino-functionalized MIL-101(Cr). The structure, morphology, thermal stability, and copper content of the catalyst were determined by FT-IR, PXRD, SEM, TEM, EDX, TGA, XPS, and ICP-OES. The catalyst shows high catalytic activity for the aforementioned reactions under solvent-free reaction conditions. High yields, low catalyst loading, easy catalyst recovery and reusability with not much shrink in catalytic activity, and a good yield of 82% in gram-scale synthesis are some of the benefits of this protocol that drove it towards sustainability.

Synthesis of poly (L-cysteine)/g-C3N4 modified glassy carbon electrodes for electrochemical detection of methotrexate as a medicine for treatment of breast cancer in pharmaceutical fluid samples

Analyzing the levels of anticancer medications in biological samples and body fluids reveals important details on the course and effects of chemotherapy. p (L-Cys)/graphitic-carbon nitride (g-C₃N₄)/GCE, a modified glassy carbon electrode, was created for the current study's electrochemical detection of methotrexate (MTX), a drug used to treat breast cancer, in pharmaceutical fluid samples. l-Cysteine was electro-polymerized on the surface of the g-C₃N₄/GCE after the g-C₃N₄ was first modified to prepare the p (L-Cys)/g-C₃N₄/GCE. Analyses of morphology and structure showed that well-crystalline p (L-Cys) on g-C₃N₄/GCE was successfully electropolymerized. Studying the electrochemical characteristics of p (L-Cys)/g-C₃N₄/GCE using CV and DPV techniques revealed a synergistic impact between g-C₃N₄ and l-cysteine that improved the stability and selectivity of the electrochemical oxidation of MTX while enhancing the electrochemical signal. Results showed that 7.5-780 μM was the linear range, and that 0.11841 μA/μM and 6 nM, respectively, were the sensitivity and limit of detection. The applicability of the suggested sensors was assessed using real pharmaceutical preparations, and the results showed that p (L-Cys)/g-C₃N₄/GCE had a high degree of precision. Five breast cancer patients who volunteered and provided prepared blood serum samples between the ages of 35 and 50 were used to examine the validity and accuracy of the proposed sensor in the current work for the determination of MTX. The results showed good recovery values (greater than 97.20%), appropriate accuracy (RSD less than 5.11%), and good agreement between the ELISA and DPV analysis results. These findings showed that p (L-Cys)/g-C₃N₄/GCE can be applied as a trustworthy MTX sensor for MTX level monitoring in blood samples and pharmaceutical samples.
