Abstract
BACKGROUND Melatonin is mainly secreted by the pineal gland during darkness and regulates biological rhythms through its receptors in the suprachiasmatic nucleus of the hypothalamus. In addition, it also plays a role in the reproductive system by affecting the function of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis, and by acting as a free radical scavenger thus contributing to the maintenance of the optimal physiological state of the gonads. Besides, melatonin can freely cross the placenta to influence fetal development. However, there is still a lack of overall understanding of the role of melatonin in the reproductive cycle of female mammals. AIM OF REVIEW Here we focus the role of melatonin in female reproduction from follicular development to delivery as well as the relationship between melatonin and lactation. We further summarize the potential role of melatonin in the treatment of preeclampsia, polycystic ovary syndrome, endometriosis, and ovarian aging. KEY SCIENTIFIC CONCEPTS OF REVIEW Understanding the physiological role of melatonin in female reproductive processes will contribute to the advancement of human fertility and reproductive medicine research.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Environmental factors in the operating room during cesarean sections are likely important for both women/birthing people and their babies but there is currently a lack of rigorous literature about their evaluation. The principal aim of this study was to systematically examine studies published on the physical environment in the obstetrical operating room during c-sections and its impact on mother and neonate outcomes. The secondary objective was to identify the sensors used to investigate the operating room environment during cesarean sections. METHODS In this literature review, we searched MEDLINE a database using the following keywords: Cesarean section AND (operating room environment OR Noise OR Music OR Video recording OR Light level OR Gentle OR Temperature OR Motion Data). Eligible studies had to be published in English or French within the past 10 years and had to investigate the operating room environment during cesarean sections in women. For each study we reported which aspects of the physical environment were investigated in the OR (i.e., noise, music, movement, light or temperature) and the involved sensors. RESULTS Of a total of 105 studies screened, we selected 8 articles from title and abstract in PubMed. This small number shows that the field is poorly investigated. The most evaluated environment factors to date are operating room noise and temperature, and the presence of music. Few studies used advanced sensors in the operating room to evaluate environmental factors in a more nuanced and complete way. Two studies concern the sound level, four concern music, one concerns temperature and one analyzed the number of entrances/exits into the OR. No study analyzed light level or more fine-grained movement data. CONCLUSIONS Main findings include increase of noise and motion at specific time-points, for example during delivery or anaesthesia; the positive impact of music on parents and staff alike; and that a warmer theatre is better for babies but more uncomfortable for surgeons.

Abstract
Oxytocin (OXT) is one of the essential hormones in the birth process; however, estradiol, prolactin, cortisol, relaxin, connexin, and prostaglandin are also present. In addition to parturition, the functions in which OXT is also involved in mammals include the induction of maternal behavior, including imprinting and maternal care, social cognition, and affiliative behavior, which can affect allo-parental care. The present article aimed to analyze the role of OXT and the neurophysiologic regulation of this hormone during parturition, how it can promote or impair maternal behavior and bonding, and its importance in lactation in domestic animals.

Abstract
Preeclampsia (PE) is a pregnancy-related disorder that significantly increases the risk of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. Melatonin, a potent antioxidant, has been suggested to mitigate oxidative stress and associated damage in various pathological conditions. Placental growth factor (PlGF) plays a vital role in placental development by promoting angiogenesis. This study aimed to investigate whether the levels of melatonin, cytokines, and PlGF were higher in the venous blood of women with preeclampsia during the third trimester of pregnancy compared to those with uncomplicated pregnancies. The study involved 32 women with preeclampsia and 33 healthy pregnant women as a control group. The concentrations of melatonin and PlGF were significantly lower in women with preeclampsia compared to healthy pregnant women. Specifically, the mean level of melatonin in the preeclampsia group was 30.98 pg/ml and 55.20 pg/ml in the control group (p=0.029). Similarly, the mean level of PlGF in the preeclampsia group was 40.03 pg/ml and 213.31 pg/ml in the control group (p<0.0001). This suggests that alterations in the placental production of melatonin and PlGF may contribute to the development of preeclampsia. In contrast, we observed higher levels of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the anti-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-10 (IL-10) in the preeclampsia group than in the control group. The mean concentration of IL-6 in the PE group was 270.79 pg/ml, whereas the control group had 224.30 pg/ml (p=0.022). Similarly, the mean concentration of IL-10 in the PE group was 41.90 pg/ml and 30.73 pg/ml in the control group (p=0.018). In women with uncomplicated pregnancies, the interaction between pro-inflammatory interleukine-6 and melatonin can be described by equality of statistical regression.

Abstract
Endometriosis, the very serious disease in women creates a huge financial burden worldwide, which is comparable to diabetes mellitus. In addition to the typical pelvic pain, endometriosis is related to low life quality and decreased work efficiency; clinical consequences include mood complaints, metabolic impairments, inflammation, immunologic problems, and elevated malignancy risks. Several risk factors are correlated with endometriosis including elevated oxidative and nitrosative stress, long-lasting inflammation, raised immune tolerance, as well as autoimmunity. Melatonin is a natural molecule present throughout both the plant and animal kingdoms. It has numerous functions as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agent. Due to the anti-proliferative, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-invasive features of melatonin, it performances as a beneficial agent to limit endometriosis; this involves several pathways including antiestrogenic, antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-apoptosis effects, as well as reducing the growth of E2-induced endometriotic tissue. Moreover, melatonin can favor sleep quality and decrease the unwanted signs in the patients. However, most of the data on melatonin accured from experimental works and additional clinical trials are needed. This review summarizes what is currently known regarding the influence of melatonin on endometriosis. AVAILABILITY OF DATA AND MATERIAL: Not applicable.

Abstract
In the last few years, there have been significant evolutions in the understanding of the hormone melatonin in terms of its physiology, regulatory role, and potential utility in various domains of clinical medicine. Melatonin's properties include, among others, the regulation of mitochondrial function, anti-inflammatory, anti-oxidative and neuro-protective effects, sleep promotion and immune enhancement. As it is also bioavailable and has little or no toxicity, it has been proposed as safe and effective for the treatment of numerous diseases and to preserve human health. In this manuscript, we tried to evaluate the role of melatonin at the beginning of human life, in pregnancy, in the fetus and in newborns through newly published literature studies.

Abstract
Objectives To investigate whether neuraxial analgesia and other medical interventions have effects on the circadian rhythm of labor. Methods It was a retrospective propensity score matched cohort study. Parturients were recruited, who delivered term singletons in cephalic position, from seven hospitals in Harvard University Partners Healthcare Systems, 2016–2018. The parturients were divided into two groups, neuraxial analgesia delivery and spontaneous vaginal delivery, the stratification was performed according to labor induction, oxytocin, operative delivery. The parturients in each group were divided into 12 periods in every 2 h based on the birth time of babies. Cosine function fitting was used to verify whether the birth time had the characteristic of circadian rhythm. Results In spontaneous vaginal deliveries, the peak of birth time was at 2:00–4:00, and the nadir was at 14:00–16:00, this showed a circadian rhythm presented by a cosine curve fitting with the formula (y = 0.0847 + 0.01711 × cos(− 0.2138 × x + 0.4471). The labor rhythm of NAD (Neuraxial Analgesia Delivery) group changed completely, inconsistent with the cosine curve fitting of the circadian rhythm. The intervention of induction and oxytocin blurred the circadian rhythm of SVD (Spontaneous Vaginal Delivery) group and increased the amplitude of the fluctuation in NAD (Neuraxial Analgesia Delivery) group. The intervention of operative delivery had changed the distribution curve completely both in the SVD (Spontaneous Vaginal Delivery) group and the NAD (Neuraxial Analgesia Delivery) group. Conclusions Neuraxial analgesia did affect on circadian rhythm of labor, changed the cosine rhythm of labor with spontaneous vaginal delivery, and this trend was aggravated by the use of induction, oxytocin and operative delivery.

Abstract
Parturition is a complex physiological process and involves many hormonal, morphological, physiological, and behavioural changes. Labour is a crucial moment for numerous species and is usually the most painful experience in females. Contrary to the extensive research in humans, there are limited pain studies associated with the birth process in domestic animals. Nonetheless, awareness of parturition has increased among the public, owners, and the scientific community during recent years. Dystocia is a significant factor that increases the level of parturition pain. It is considered less common in polytocous species because newborns' number and small size might lead to the belief that the parturition process is less painful than in monotocous animal species and humans. This review aims to provide elements of the current knowledge about human labour pain (monotocous species), the relevant contribution of the rat model to human labour pain, and the current clinical and experimental knowledge of parturition pain mechanisms in domestic animals that support the fact that domestic polytocous species also experience pain. Moreover, both for women and domestic animal species, parturition's pain represents a potential welfare concern, and information on pain indicators and the appropriate analgesic therapy are discussed.

Abstract
We conducted a prospective study to assess serum melatonin as a biomarker to predict the development of late-term and postterm pregnancies and spontaneous beginning of labor in women with term pregnancies. Population of this prospective study included pregnant women with late-term and postterm pregnancies and term pregnancies as controls. In these study groups, serum melatonin concentrations were measured in women with or without labor and their perinatal data were collected. In the postterm pregnancies without labor, the lowest median melatonin concentrations were measured (p<0.05). In the late-term and postterm pregnancies with and without labor, the median serum melatonin concentrations were significantly lower than term ones (p<0.05). In the term pregnancies with labor, the highest median melatonin concentration was measured (p<0.05). A serum melatonin concentration≤34 pg/mL as a cut-off value determines late-term and postterm pregnancy with a sensitivity of 80.4% and a specificity of 81.4%. A serum melatonin concentration>29.35 pg/mL as a cut-off value determines presence of labor with a sensitivity of 82.1% and a specificity of 55.0%. In women with term pregnancies, with the measurement of serum melatonin, it is possible to predict the development of late-term and postterm pregnancies and whether these pregnancies undergo spontaneous labor. With further studies, these findings need to be supported before their routine clinical use.

Abstract
Shiftwork, including work that takes place at night (nightshift) and/or rotates between day and nightshifts, plays an important role in our society, but is associated with decreased health, including reproductive dysfunction. One key factor in shiftwork, exposure to light at night, has been identified as a likely contributor to the underlying health risks associated with shiftwork. Light at night disrupts the behavioral and molecular circadian timekeeping system, which is important for coordinated timing of physiological processes, causing mistimed hormone release and impaired physiological functions. This review focuses on the impact of shiftwork on reproductive function and pregnancy in women and laboratory rodents and potential underlying molecular mechanisms. We summarize the negative impact of shiftwork on female fertility and compare these findings to studies in rodent models of light shifts. Light-shift rodent models recapitulate several aspects of reproductive dysfunction found in shift workers, and their comparison with human studies can enable a deeper understanding of physiological and hormonal responses to light shifts and the underlying molecular mechanisms that may lead to reproductive disruption in human shift workers. The contributions of human and rodent studies are essential to identify the origins of impaired fertility in women employed in shiftwork.

Abstract
(1) Background: Although the current literature shows that daylight saving time (DST) may play a role in human health and behavior, this topic has been poorly investigated with reference to Obstetrics. The aim of this case–control study was to evaluate whether DST may influence the number of spontaneous deliveries. (2) Methods: A low-risk pregnancy cohort with spontaneous onset of labor (n = 7415) was analyzed from a single Italian region for the period 2016–2018. Primary outcome was the number of spontaneous deliveries. Secondary outcomes were: gestational age at delivery, type and time of delivery, use of analgesia, birth weight, and 5-min Apgar at delivery. We compared the outcomes in the two weeks after DST (cases) to the two weeks before DST (controls). (3) Results: Data showed no significant difference between the number of deliveries occurring before and after DST (Chi-square = 0.546, p = 0.46). Vaginal deliveries at any gestational age showed no statistical difference between the two groups (Chi-square = 0.120, p = 0.73). There were no significant differences in the secondary outcomes, as well. (4) Conclusions: DST has neither a significant impact on the number of deliveries nor on the obstetric variables investigated by this study.

Abstract
Heifer conception rate (HCR) is defined as the percentage of inseminated heifers that become pregnant at each service. The genome-wide association analyses in this study focused on identifying the loci associated with Holstein heifer (n = 2013) conception rate at first service (HCR1) and the number of times bred (TBRD) to achieve a pregnancy. There were 348 unique loci associated (p < 5 × 10−8) with HCR1 and 615 unique loci associated (p < 5 × 10−8) with TBRD. The two phenotypes shared 302 loci, and 56 loci were validated in independent cattle populations. There were 52 transcription factor binding sites (TFBS) and 552 positional candidate genes identified in the HCR1- and TBRD-associated loci. The positional candidate genes and the TFBS associated with HCR1 and TBRD were used in the ingenuity pathway analysis (IPA). In the IPA, 11 pathways, 207 master regulators and 11 upstream regulators were associated (p < 1.23 × 10−5) with HCR1 and TBRD. The validated loci associated with both HCR1 and TBRD make good candidates for genomic selection and further investigations to elucidate the mechanisms associated with subfertility and infertility.

Abstract
For more than a half century the hormone melatonin has been associated with vertebrate reproduction, particularly in the context of seasonal breeding. This association is due in large measure to the fact that melatonin secretion from the pineal gland into the peripheral circulation is a nocturnal event whose duration is reflective of night length, which of course becomes progressively longer during winter months and correspondingly shorter during the summer months. The nocturnal plasma melatonin signal is conserved in essentially all vertebrates and is accessed not just for reproductive rhythms, but for seasonal cycles of metabolic activities, immune functions, and behavioral expression. A vast literature on melatonin and vertebrate biology has accrued over the past 60 years since melatonin's discovery, including the broad topic of animal reproduction, which is far beyond the scope of this human-focused review. Although modern humans in the industrialized world appear in general to have little remaining reproductive seasonality, the relationships between melatonin and human reproduction continue to attract widespread scientific attention. The purpose of this chapter is to draw attention to some newer developments in the field, especially those with relevance to human fertility and reproductive medicine. As the vast majority of studies have focused on the female reproductive system, a discussion of the potential impact of melatonin on human male fertility will be left for others.

Abstract
The development of the endometrium is a cyclic event tightly regulated by hormones and growth factors to coordinate the menstrual cycle while promoting a suitable microenvironment for embryo implantation during the “receptivity window”. Many women experience uterine failures that hamper the success of conception, such as endometrium thickness, endometriosis, luteal phase defects, endometrial polyps, adenomyosis, viral infection, and even endometrial cancer; most of these disturbances involve changes in endocrine components or cell damage. The emerging evidence has proven that circadian rhythm deregulation followed by low circulating melatonin is associated with low implantation rates and difficulties to maintain pregnancy. Given that melatonin is a circadian-regulating hormone also involved in the maintenance of uterine homeostasis through regulation of numerous pathways associated with uterine receptivity and gestation, the success of female reproduction may be dependent on the levels and activity of uterine and placental melatonin. Based on the fact that irregular production of maternal and placental melatonin is related to recurrent spontaneous abortion and maternal/fetal disturbances, melatonin replacement may offer an excellent opportunity to restore normal physiological function of the affected tissues. By alleviating oxidative damage in the placenta, melatonin favors nutrient transfer and improves vascular dynamics at the uterine–placental interface. This review focuses on the main in vivo and in vitro functions of melatonin on uterine physiological processes, such as decidualization and implantation, and also on the feto-maternal tissues, and reviews how exogenous melatonin functions from a mechanistic standpoint to preserve the organ health. New insights on the potential signaling pathways whereby melatonin resists preeclampsia and endometriosis are further emphasized in this review.

Abstract
In humans, circulating levels of the hormone melatonin and the initiation of spontaneous labor are both higher at night than during the day. Since activation of uterine melatonin receptors can stimulate human in vitro uterine contractions and these receptors are only expressed on the uterine tissue of women in labor, we hypothesized that circulating melatonin concentrations would affect uterine contractions in vivo. We evaluated the impact of light-induced modulation of melatonin secretion on uterine contractions in women during late third trimester (~36-39 weeks) of pregnancy in two inpatient protocols. We found a significant (P < 0.05) positive linear association between circulating melatonin concentrations and the number of uterine contractions under both protocols. On average, uterine contractions increased between 1.4 and 2.1 contractions per 30 minutes for every 10 pg/mL*h increase in melatonin concentration. These findings have both basic science and clinical implications for pregnant women, since endogenous melatonin levels and melatonin receptor activity can be altered by light and/or pharmaceutical agents.

Abstract
Background and Objectives The similarities between the melatonin and oxytocin signaling could lead to increased contractility of myometrium. We designed this randomized double-blind, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of melatonin in reduction of blood loss during and after the lower segment cesarean section. Methods One hundred and twenty patients who had been scheduled for cesarean section under spinal anesthesia were enrolled in the study. We randomly allocated them to one of the three following groups to receive either melatonin 3 mg (M3), melatonin 6 mg (M6), or placebo (P) sublingually 20 min before the surgery. The hemoglobin levels before and 12 h after surgery, the mean weight of the materials used in the operation time, the need for additional oxytocic therapy, and the incidence of adverse effects were probed and recorded. Results There was a significant difference between the group M6 and both M3 and P in the mean weight of the materials (p = .024 and .041, respectively) and between M6 and P groups in terms of mean decrease in hemoglobin during 12 h after cesarean section (p = .029). Conclusion Using 6 mg melatonin, sublingually, as a premedication in patients undergoing cesarean section with spinal anesthesia could statistically reduce the amount of blood loss after the lower segment cesarean section, although it may not be clinically meaningful.Registration number: ACTRN12612000117819 and ClinicalTrials.gov Identifier: NCT01572805.

Abstract
The interaction of granulosa cells (GCs) with oocytes is important to regulate follicle development. The exogenous melatonin promoting the maturation of oocytes by GCs has been approved in pig, however, the transcriptome profile and the functions of the genes regulated by melatonin in GCs have not yet to be fully characterized. In this study, we found melatonin could stimulate the synthesis of estradiol in pig GCs. The RNA-seq was used to explore the effects of melatonin on gene expression, a total of 89 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were identified. Gene ontology analysis showed DEGs which associated with regulation of cell proliferation, cell cycle, and anti-apoptosis were significantly enriched. The functions of two DEGs, NOTCH2 and FILIP1L, were studied in pig GCs. The results showed that NOTCH2 inhibited the synthesis of estradiol, but FILIP1L promoted the synthesis of estradiol. Furthermore, inhibiting NOTCH2 in granulosa cells cocultured with cumulus-oocyte-complexes had no obvious effect on the maturation of pig oocyte, but could upregulate the cleavage rate of oocyte. We proved that FILIP1L had no effect on the maturation and cleavage of pig oocytes. Our work deepens the understanding of melatonin's effects on GCs and oocyte. The DEGs we found will be beneficial to reveal mechanisms of melatonin acting on GCs and oocytes and design the pharmacological interventions.

Abstract
The concept of sensory delivery rooms was introduced in 2013. These rooms offer programmable calming lights, restful blurred pictures displayed on a wall-sized big screen, and sound effects. The primary aim of this observational study was to analyse the risk of obstetrical interventions among women giving birth for the first-time in a sensory delivery room vs. a standard delivery room. We included nulliparous, term pregnant women having a single baby with a cephalic presentation who were in spontaneous labour and gave birth between March 1st 2014 and July 1st 2015 in North Zealand Hospital, Hillerød. A total of 789 women were included in the study, 313 gave birth in a sensory room and 476 in a standard delivery room. The risk of a caesarean delivery was significantly decreased when giving birth in a sensory room compared with a standard delivery room (OR, multiple adjusted: 0.44; 95% CI 0.22-0.87); furthermore, the use of oxytocin infusion was also reduced (OR, multiple adjusted: 0.71; 95% CI 0.50-1.03). This observational cohort study suggests that giving birth in a sensory delivery room could lower the risk of caesarean delivery, potentially reducing the number of such deliveries by one for every 23 patients.

Abstract
Last year melatonin was 60 years old, or at least its discovery was 60 years ago. The molecule itself may well be almost as old as life itself. So it is time to take yet another perspective on our understanding of its functions, effects and clinical uses. This is not a formal review-there is already a multitude of systematic reviews, narrative reviews, meta-analyses and even reviews of reviews. In view of the extraordinary variety of effects attributed to melatonin in the last 25 years, it is more of an attempt to sort out some areas where a consensus opinion exists, and where placebo controlled, randomized, clinical trials have confirmed early observations on therapeutic uses. The current upsurge of concern about the multiple health problems associated with disturbed circadian rhythms has generated interest in related therapeutic interventions, of which melatonin is one. The present text will consider the physiological role of endogenous melatonin, and the mostly pharmacological effects of exogenous treatment, on the assumption that normal circulating concentrations represent endogenous pineal production. It will concentrate mainly on the most researched, and accepted area of therapeutic use and potential use of melatonin-its undoubted ability to realign circadian rhythms and sleep-since this is the author's bias. It will touch briefly upon some other systems with prominent rhythmic attributes including certain cancers, the cardiovascular system, the entero-insular axis and metabolism together with the use of melatonin to assess circadian status. Many of the ills of the developed world relate to deranged rhythms-and everything is rhythmic unless proved otherwise.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Alzheimer's disease (AD) is the leading cause of dementia, and as its prevalence increases, so does its detrimental impact on society. The currently available therapies have limited efficacy, leaving AD patients on an irrevocably fatal path of this disease. OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to test efficacy of a novel combinatorial treatment approach to alleviate AD-like pathology. METHODS We selected four naturally occurring compounds and used them in different combinations to test their effect on AD-like pathology. Employing a well-established cell culture AD model system, we evaluated levels of several diverse biomarkers associated with a number of cellular pathways associated with AD. The readouts included: amyloid-β peptides, anti-inflammatory and anti-apoptotic proteins, oxidative enzymes, and reactive oxygen species. RESULTS Using this approach, we demonstrated that the compounds delivered in combination had higher efficacy than individual treatments. Specifically, we observed significant reduction in levels of the amyloid-β peptides, as well as pro-inflammatory proteins and reactive oxygen species. Similarly, delivery of compounds in combination resulted in an increased expression of anti-apoptotic proteins and anti-oxidative enzymes. Collectively, these modifications in AD pathology biomarkers reflect a promising therapeutic and preventive strategy to combat this disease. CONCLUSION The above findings support a novel therapeutic approach to address a currently unmet medical need, which would benefit not only AD patients and their caregivers, but also society as a whole.

Abstract
The aim of the present study was to investigate the effects of Angiotensin II (Ang II) and Arginin-Vasopressin (AVP) on contractility of non-pregnant uterus in diabetic Wistar rats and to explore whether one-week administration of Melatonin (MLT) or Ghrelin (GHR) will change the response of diabetic uterine muscle to AngII and AVP. Uterine horns, prepared by the method of isolated tissues were investigated as well as glycemic profile, blood pressure and body weight. The research of smooth muscle contractions was made by a new method of analysis, characterizing in detail the various phases of the myometrial activity. Differences in the development of the peptide-mediated smooth muscle contractions depending on the phase of the estrous cycle were observed. Experimental diabetes had a pronounced negative effect on force and time-parameters of AngII and AVP-stimulated uterine contractions. Administration of GHR or MLT had a beneficial effect on the glycemic status of diabetic rats and partially improved the response of uterine preparations to the peptides. The application of MLT increased both force and time-parameters of Ang II-and AVP-stimulated uterine contractions while treatment with GHR increased power characteristics and shortened contraction and relaxation of the smooth muscle process.

Abstract
The functions of melatonin in preovulatory fluid remain elusive. In the current study, we observed that the extremely high level of expression of MT1 in mice granulosa cells was rapidly induced by hCG (equivalent LH) within 2 hours and this was referred as MT1 surge. In cumulus cells, serotonin N-acetyltransferase (SNAT) was also upregulated by hCG and led to elevated melatonin levels in ovarian follicle fluid. Melatonin application before MT1 surge significantly promoted embryo implantation, and this was probably attributed to a rise in progesterone levels in the serum. The mechanistic studies indicated that melatonin/MT1 (MLT/MT1) signaling remarkably improved the expression of corpus luteum marker genes, that is, Akr1c18 and Cyp11a1. High-throughput sequencing results suggested that extracellular matrix (ECM) receptor interaction, focal adhesion, and activation of PI3K/Akt pathway which are involved in granulosa cell luteinization might mediate the actions of MLT/MT1 signal. In addition, this effect on luteinization was compared in different species. It was verified that high melatonin levels exist in serum at estrum of cows and help to improve the first estrus fecundation rate. These results suggested that both melatonin and MT1 are involved in the downstream reaction of hCG (LH) and they play important roles in luteinization. These findings provide the novel information on the physiology of melatonin in animal reproduction.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To investigate whether the circadian rhythm disruption following the transition into and out of daylight saving time (DST) is associated with an increased risk of spontaneous delivery. DESIGN We compared the number of spontaneous deliveries in the Swedish Medical Birth Register during the week after the change to and the week after the change from DST (exposure periods) with the average number of spontaneous deliveries in the control period, defined as the week before and the week after each exposure period. SETTING Sweden, 1993-2006. PRIMARY AND SECONDARY OUTCOME MEASURES The primary outcomes were the weekly and the daily number of spontaneous deliveries in the exposure and the control periods. In secondary analyses we also compared the mean length of pregnancy of the women with spontaneous deliveries in the exposure and control periods. RESULTS The number of deliveries during the week after the transition into or out of DST was similar to that in the comparison period (18 519 observed vs 18 434 expected in case of the spring shift and 19 073 observed vs 19 122 expected in case of the autumn shift); the corresponding incidence ratio and 95% CIs were 1.005 (0.990 to 1.019) and 0.997 (0.983 to 1.012), respectively. There were no differences in the length of gestation of the deliveries in the exposure and the control periods. CONCLUSIONS Our results do not support the hypothesis that a minor circadian rhythm disruption is associated with an increased short-term risk of spontaneous delivery.
