Abstract
Botrytis cinerea is a destructive necrotrophic phytopathogen causing overwhelming diseases in more than 1400 plant species, especially fruit crops, resulting in significant economic losses worldwide. The pathogen causes rotting of fruits at both pre-harvest and postharvest stages. Aside from causing gray mold of the mature fruits, the fungus infects leaves, flowers, and seeds, which makes it a notorious phytopathogen. Worldwide, in the majority of fruit crops, B. cinerea causes gray mold. In order to effectively control this pathogen, extensive research has been conducted due to its wide host range and the huge economic losses it causes. It is advantageous to explore detection and diagnosis techniques of B. cinerea to provide the fundamental basis for mitigation strategies. Botrytis cinerea has been identified and quantified in fruit/plant samples at pre- and post-infection levels using various detection techniques including DNA markers, volatile organic compounds, qPCR, chip-digital PCR, and PCR-based nucleic acid sensors. In addition, cultural, physical, chemical, biological, and botanical methods have all been used to combat Botrytis fruit rot. This review discusses research progress made on estimating economic losses, detection and diagnosis, as well as management strategies, including cultural, physical, chemical, and biological studies on B. cinerea along with knowledge gaps and potential areas for future research.

Abstract
The antifungal activity of Serratia plymuthica CCGG2742, a bacterial strain isolated from grapes berries skin, against a phytopathogenic fungus isolated from blueberries was evaluated in vitro and in vivo. In order to characterize the wild fungal isolate, phylogenetic analysis using concatenated DNA sequences from the RPB2 and TEF1 genes and of the ITS region was performed, allowing the identification of the fungal isolate that was called Alternaria tenuissima CC17. Hyphae morphology, mycelium ultrastructure, conidia and reproductive structures were in agreement with the phylogenetic analysis. The antifungal activity of the S. plymuthica strain was dependent on the composition of the culture medium. The greatest inhibition of mycelial growth of A. tenuissima CC17 by S. plymuthica CCGG2742 was observed on YTS medium, which lacks of an easily assimilable carbon source. Fungal growth medium supplemented with 50 % of bacterial supernatant decreased the conidia germination of A. tenuissima CC17 up to 32 %. Preventive applications of S. plymuthica CCGG2742 to blueberries and tomato leaves at conidia:bacteria ratio of 1:100, protected in 77.8 ± 4.6 % and 98.2 ± 0.6 % to blueberries and tomato leaves from infection caused by A. tenuissima CC17, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report on the antifungal activity of S. plymuthica against A. tenuissima, which could be used as a biological control agent of plant diseases caused by this fungal species. In addition, the results of this work could be a starting point to attribute the real importance of A. tenuissima as a pathogen of blueberries in Chile, which until now had been considered almost exclusively to A. alternata. Likewise, this research could be relevant to start developing highly effective strategies based on S. plymuthica CCGG2742 for the control of this important phytopathogenic fungus.

Abstract
Screening of Bacillus with antagonistic effects on paddy mold pathogens to provide strain resources for biological control of mold in Oryza sativa L. screening of Bacillus isolates antagonistic towards Aspergillus tubingensis from rhizosphere soil of healthy paddy; classification and identification of antagonistic strains by biological characteristics and 16S rDNA sequence analysis; transcriptome sequencing after RNA extraction from Bacillus-treated Aspergillus tubingensis; and extraction of inhibitory crude proteins of Bacillus by ammonium sulfate precipitation; inhibitory crude protein and Bacillus spp. were treated separately for A. tubingensis and observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM). An antagonistic strain of Bacillus, named B7, was identified as Paenibacillus polymyxa by 16S rDNA identification and phylogenetic evolutionary tree comparison analysis. Analysis of the transcriptome results showed that genes related to secondary metabolite biosynthesis such as antifungal protein were significantly downregulated. SEM results showed that the mycelium of A. tubingensis underwent severe rupture after treatment with P. polymyxa and antifungal proteins, respectively. In addition, the sporocarp changed less after treatment with P. polymyxa, and the sporangium stalks had obvious folds. P. polymyxa B7 has a good antagonistic effect against A. tubingensis and has potential for biocontrol applications of paddy mold pathogens.

Abstract
Development of natural, broad-spectrum, and eco-friendly bio-fungicides is of high interest in the agriculture and food industries. In this context, Bacillus genus has shown great potential for producing a wide range of antimicrobial metabolites against various pathogens. A Bacillus velezensis strain FB2 was isolated from an agricultural field of National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE) Faisalabad, Pakistan, exhibiting good antifungal properties. The complete genome of this strain was sequenced, and its antifungal potential was assayed by dual culture method. Moreover, structural characterization of its antifungal metabolites, produced in vitro, were studied. Genome analysis and mining revealed the secondary metabolite gene clusters, encoding non-ribosomal peptides (NRPs) production (e.g., surfactin, iturin and fengycin) and polyketide (PK) synthesis (e.g., difficidin, bacillaene and macrolactin). Furthermore, the Bacillus velezensis FB2 strain was observed to possess in vitro antifungal activity; 41.64, 40.38 and 26% growth inhibition against major fungal pathogens i.e. Alternaria alternata, Fusarium oxysporum and Fusarium solani respectively. Its lipopeptide extract obtained by acid precipitation method was also found effective against the above-mentioned fungal pathogens. The ESI-MS/MS analysis indicated various homologs of surfactin and iturin-A, responsible for their antifungal activities. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of Bacillus velezensis FB2, as a promising candidate for biocontrol purposes, acting in a safe and sustainable way, to control plant pathogens.

Abstract
The amounts of anthropogenic pollutants, e.g., microplastics (MPs) and pesticides, in terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems have been increasing. The aim of this study was to assess the influence of MPs on the removal of herbicides (metolachlor, MET; 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid, 2,4-D) and the production of biosurfactants (surfactin and iturin) by Bacillus sp. Kol L6 active against Fusarium culmorum. The results showed that Kol L6 eliminated 40-55% MET and 2,4-D from liquid cultures, but this process was inhibited in the presence of MPs. Although the pollutants did not strongly limit the production of surfactin, iturin secretion was found to decrease by more than 70% in the presence of all three pollutants. Interestingly, the strongest modification in the profile of iturin homologues was calculated for the cultures containing MET + MP and 2,4-D + MET + MP. The bacteria significantly limited the growth of the phytopathogenic F. culmorum DSM1094F in the presence of individual pollutants and their two-component mixtures. However, in the presence of all three tested pollutants, the growth of the fungus was limited only partially (by no more than 40%). The presented results are a starting point for further research on bacteria-fungi-plants interactions in the soil environment in the presence of multiple pollutants.

Abstract
Monilinia laxa, a notorious fungal pathogen responsible for the devastating brown rot disease afflicting apples, wreaks havoc in both orchards and storage facilities, precipitating substantial economic losses. Currently, chemical methods represent the primary means of controlling this pathogen in warehouses. However, this study sought to explore an alternative approach by harnessing the biocontrol potential of bacterial isolates against brown rot in apple trees. A total of 72 bacterial isolates were successfully obtained from the apple tree rhizosphere and subjected to initial screening via co-cultivation with the pathogen. Notably, eight bacterial isolates demonstrated remarkable efficacy, reducing the mycelial growth of the pathogen from 68.75 to 9.25%. These isolates were subsequently characterized based on phenotypic traits, biochemical properties, and 16S rRNA gene amplification. Furthermore, we investigated these isolates' production capacity with respect to two enzymes, namely, protease and chitinase, and evaluated their efficacy in disease control. Through phenotypic, biochemical, and 16S rRNA gene-sequencing analyses, the bacterial isolates were identified as Serratia marcescens, Bacillus cereus, Bacillus sp., Staphylococcus succinus, and Pseudomonas baetica. In dual culture assays incorporating M. laxa, S. marcescens and S. succinus exhibited the most potent degree of mycelial growth inhibition, achieving 68.75 and 9.25% reductions, respectively. All the bacterial isolates displayed significant chitinase and protease activities. Quantitative assessment of chitinase activity revealed the highest levels in strains AP5 and AP13, with values of 1.47 and 1.36 U/mL, respectively. Similarly, AP13 and AP6 exhibited the highest protease activity, with maximal enzyme production levels reaching 1.3 and 1.2 U/mL, respectively. In apple disease control assays, S. marcescens and S. succinus strains exhibited disease severity values of 12.34% and 61.66% (DS), respectively, highlighting their contrasting efficacy in mitigating disease infecting apple fruits. These findings underscore the immense potential of the selected bacterial strains with regard to serving as biocontrol agents for combatting brown rot disease in apple trees, thus paving the way for sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to chemical interventions.

Abstract
The antagonistic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HY2-1 was a marine microbiology that was isolated previously from the seabed silt of Beibu Gulf in China by dual culture with Penicillium digitatum. As a continuous study, the present work focused on evaluating the antimicrobial activity, identifying the produced active components, and revealing the fermentation characteristics of B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1, respectively. It was found that B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1 exhibited a broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against the tested seven phytopathogenic fungi and five pathogenic bacteria by producing Bacillus lipopeptides such as fengycin A (C14 to C19 homologues) and surfactin (C14 and C15 homologues). Morphological observation of P. digitatum under light microscope, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, and fluorescence microscope inferred that B. amyloliquefaciens exerted the antagonistic activity by damaging the fungal cell membrane, thus inhibiting the mycelium growth and sporification of phytopathogenic fungi. As a marine microbiology, our results showed that B. amyloliquefaciens could survive and metabolize even at the culture condition with 110 g/L of NaCl concentration, and the produced antimicrobial compounds exhibited excellent thermostability and acid-alkali tolerance. The dynamic models were further constructed to theoretically analyze the fermentation process of B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1, suggesting that the synthesis of antimicrobial compounds was coupled with both cell growth and cell biomass. In conclusion, the marine lipopeptides-producing B. amyloliquefaciens HY2-1 showed a promising prospect to be explored as a biocontrol agent for plant disease control of crops and postharvest preservation of fruits and vegetables, especially due to its outstanding stress resistance and the broad-spectrum and effective antagonist on various phytopathogenic fungi.

Abstract
Postharvest disease management is vital to increase the quality and productivity of crops. As part of crop disease protection, people used different agrochemicals and agricultural practices to manage postharvest diseases. However, the widespread use of agrochemicals in pest and disease control has detrimental effects on consumer health, the environment, and fruit quality. To date, different approaches are being used to manage postharvest diseases. The use of microorganisms to control postharvest disease is becoming an eco-friendly and environmentally sounds approach. There are many known and reported biocontrol agents, including bacteria, fungi, and actinomycetes. Nevertheless, despite the abundance of publications on biocontrol agents, the use of biocontrol in sustainable agriculture requires substantial research, effective adoption, and comprehension of the interactions between plants, pathogens, and the environment. To accomplish this, this review made an effort to locate and summarize earlier publications on the function of microbial biocontrol agents against postharvest crop diseases. Additionally, this review aims to investigate biocontrol mechanisms, their modes of operation, potential future applications for bioagents, as well as difficulties encountered during the commercialization process.

Abstract
Pathogen infestation results in significant losses of fruits and vegetables during handling, transportation, and storage. The use of synthetic fungicides has been a common measure for controlling plant pathogens. However, their excessive use of chemicals has led to increased environmental pollution, leaving large amounts of chemicals in agricultural products, posing a threat to human and animal health. There is now an increasing amount of research activities to explore safer and more innovative ways to control plant pathogens. In this regard, endophytic bacteria contribute significantly. Endophytic bacteria are ubiquitous in the internal tissues of plants without causing damage or disease to the host. Due to their high volatility and difficulties in residue in fruits and vegetables, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs) produced by endophytic bacteria have received a lot of attention in recent years. VOCs are a potential biofumigant for the effective control of postharvest fruits and vegetables diseases. This review focuses mainly on the recent progress in using endophytic bacteria VOCs to control post-harvest fruits and vegetables disease. This review provides a brief overview of the concept, characteristics, and summarises the types, application effect, and control mechanisms of endophytic bacterial VOCs. The research area that is being developed has great application value in agriculture and living practice.

Abstract
Fruit diseases brought on by fungus infestation leads to postharvest losses of fresh fruit. Approximately 30% of harvested fruits do not reach consumers’ plates due to postharvest losses. Fungal pathogens play a substantial part in those losses, as they cause the majority of fruit rots and consumer complaints. Understanding fungal pathogenic processes and control measures is crucial for developing disease prevention and treatment strategies. In this review, we covered the presented pathogen entry, environmental conditions for pathogenesis, fruit’s response to pathogen attack, molecular mechanisms by which fungi infect fruits in the postharvest phase, production of mycotoxin, virulence factors, fungal genes involved in pathogenesis, and recent strategies for protecting fruit from fungal attack. Then, in order to investigate new avenues for ensuring fruit production, existing fungal management strategies were then assessed based on their mechanisms for altering the infection process. The goal of this review is to bridge the knowledge gap between the mechanisms of fungal disease progression and numerous disease control strategies being developed for fruit farming.

Abstract
This study was aim at investigating antifungal activities of Bacillus velezensis FJAT-52631 and its lipopeptides against Colletotrichum acutatum ex situ and in situ. The results showed that the strain FJAT-52631 and its crude lipopeptides (10 mg/ml) exhibited strong inhibitory effects on growth of C. acutatum FJAT-30256 with an inhibition rate of 75.3% and an inhibition zone diameter of 17.66 mm, respectively. Both the viable bacterial cultures and lipopeptides of FJAT-52631 could delay the onset of loquat anthracnose by 1 day and lower the incidence of loquat anthracnose in situ. The whole cultures of B. velezensis FJAT-52631 displayed a 50% biocontrol efficacy on loquat anthracnose at the fourth day after inoculation, but the crude lipopeptides not. The average lesion diameter of the whole-culture treated group was 5.62 mm, which was smaller than that of control group (6.81 mm). All the three types of lipopeptides including iturin A, fengycin, and surfactin A secreted from the strain FJAT-52631 exhibited antifungal activities. Among them, surfactin A displayed higher antifungal activity at a concentration of 1.25 mg/mL than other two lipopeptides even if at a concentration of 60 mg/mL. Thus, the results indicated that surfactin A produced by FJAT-52631 played a major role in the biocontrol of the loquat anthracnose. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observation revealed the structural deformities in the mycelia of C. acutatum. The above results suggested that the antifungal lipopeptides from B. velezensis FJAT-52631 would be potential in biocontrol against anthracnose disease of loquat caused by C. acutatum.

Abstract
Large amounts of processing tomato are grown in Xinjiang, China. Tomato black spot disease, caused by Alternaria spp., and the produced alternaria toxins in tomato products are posing risks to human health. In this study, we isolated a rhizospheric bacterium, XJ-BV2007, from tomato (Solanum lycopersicum) fields, which we identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens. We found that this bacterium has a strong antagonistic effect against Alternaria alternata and reduces the accumulation of alternaria toxins in tomatoes. According to the antifungal activity of the bacteria-free filtrate, we revealed that B. amyloliquefaciens XJ-BV2007 suppresses A. alternata by the production of antifungal metabolites. Combining semi-preparative high-performance liquid chromatography, we employed UPLC-QTOF-MS analysis and the Oxford cup experiment to find that fengycin plays an important role in inhibiting A. alternata. This paper firstly reported that B. amyloliquefaciens efficiently controls tomato black spot disease and mycotoxins caused by A. alternata. B. amyloliquefaciens XJ-BV2007 may provide an alternative biocontrol strain for the prevention of tomato black spot disease.

Abstract
Apple ring rot caused by Botryosphaeria dothidea is an important disease that leads to severe quality deterioration and yield loss at pre-harvest and postharvest stages. Therefore, it is urgent to develop safe and efficient measures to control this disease. The objective of the present study was to investigate the biocontrol features of Pseudomonas syringae B-1 against B. dothidea and explore its mechanism of action utilizing in vitro and in vivo assays. The results showed that P. syringae B-1 strongly reduced the incidence of apple ring rot and lesion diameter by 41.2 and 90.2%, respectively, in comparison to the control fruit. In addition, the control efficiency of strain B-1 against B. dothidea infection depended on its concentration and the interval time. P. syringae B-1 cells showed higher inhibitory activities than its culture filtrates on the mycelial growth and spore germination of B. dothidea. Moreover, P. syringae B-1 treatment alleviated electrolyte leakage, lipid peroxidation, and H2O2 accumulation in B. dothidea-infected apple fruit by increasing antioxidant enzyme activities, including peroxidase, catalase, superoxide dismutase, and ascorbate peroxidase. We also found that strain B-1 treatment enhanced four defense-related enzyme activities and stimulated the accumulation of three disease-resistant substances including phenolics, lignin, and salicylic acid (SA) in apple fruit. In addition, strain B-1 triggered the upregulated expression of defense-related genes such as PR genes (PR1, PR5, GLU, and CHI) and two genes involved in the biosynthesis of SA (SID2 and PAD4) to promote the resistance potential in apple fruit. Hence, our results suggest that P. syringae B-1 is a promising strategy against B. dothidea, mainly through reducing oxidative damage, activating defense-related enzymes, accumulating disease-resistant substances, and triggering the expression of resistance-correlated genes in apple fruit.

Abstract
Geraniol nanoemulsions (G-NE) based on Tween 80 and medium chain triglyceride (MCT) as surfactant and co-surfactant, respectively, has been prepared by the spontaneous emulsification method. Its physical and chemical properties such as mean particle size, zeta potential, PDI, pH, viscosity, contact angle, appearance morphology, and stability (storage stability, thermal stability, centrifugal properties, acid-base stability, and freeze-thaw properties) of the droplet were analyzed. The results showed that the mean particle size of G-NE was 90.33 ± 5.23 nm, the PDI was 0.058 ± 0.0007, the zeta potential was -17.95 ± 5.85 mV and the encapsulation efficiency was >90%. The produced G-NE has been demonstrated to be fairly stable in long-term storage at 4°C, pH = 5 and high-speed centrifuges. Moreover, G-NE had a significant inhibition effect on Staphylococcus aureus, Escherichia coli, Salmonella typhimurium and Listeria monocytogenes (p < 0.05). The bacterial inhibition rates of G-NE at a concentration of 1 MIC were 48, 99, 71.73, and 99% after 12 h of action against these four foodborne pathogenic bacteria, respectively. Therefore, the results obtained indicated that nanoemulsification enhanced the stability and antibacterial activity of geraniol to some extent, which will promote the utilization of geraniol in food preservation.

Abstract
To develop an effective and environmentally safe strategy to control postharvest gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea, Bacillus siamensis strain YJ15 isolated from blueberry was used to test the biocontrol potential. It is interesting to find that the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from strain YJ15 exhibited significant antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea as well as 11 other plant-pathogenic fungi, with a percentage of mycelial growth inhibition from 74.96 to 92.81%. Additionally, VOCs from strain YJ15 could reduce significantly the disease incidence and lesion diameter with the increasing of fermentation time, indicating great biocontrol potential for controlling blueberry postharvest gray mold. Furthermore, the VOCs were collected by using headspace solid-phase microextraction fiber, and the composition of VOCs was further revealed by using gas chromatography coupled with quadruple mass spectrometry. In total, 24 kinds of VOCs, including 5 alkanes, 2 aldehydes, 3 ketones, 5 alcohols, 1 alkene, 5 acids and esters, 2 aromatic compounds, and 1 sulfur compound, were emitted at 1, 3, 5, and 7 days after inoculation. Among these VOCs, eight antifungal VOCs could inhibit mycelial growth of B. cinerea. It is important to highlight that, although 1-butanol and 3-methyl-1-butanol were the most abundant compounds, 2-ethylhexanol, 1-heptanol, and 1,3-xylene have proved to be more toxic to B. cinerea than 3-methyl-1-butanol, propanethioic acid, 2,2-dimethyl-, ethyl 2-methylbutyrate, 2-heptanone, and 1-butanol, which provide new, promising biofumigants for the control of postharvest gray mold caused by B. cinerea.

Abstract
Overall, 180 yeasts and bacteria isolated from the peel of citrus fruits were screened for their in vitro antagonistic activity against Penicillium digitatum and P. italicum, causative agents of green and blue mold of citrus fruits, respectively. Two yeast and three bacterial isolates were selected for their inhibitory activity on mycelium growth. Based on the phylogenetic analysis of 16S rDNA and ITS rDNA sequences, the yeast isolates were identified as Candida oleophila and Debaryomyces hansenii while the bacterial isolates were identified as Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, B. pumilus and B. subtilis. All five selected isolates significantly reduced the incidence of decay incited by P. digitatum and P. italicum on ‘Valencia’ orange and ‘Eureka’ lemon fruits. Moreover, they were effective in preventing natural infections of green and blue mold of fruits stored at 4 °C. Treatments with antagonistic yeasts and bacteria did not negatively affect the quality and shelf life of fruits. The antagonistic efficacy of the five isolates depended on multiple modes of action, including the ability to form biofilms and produce antifungal lipopeptides, lytic enzymes and volatile compounds. The selected isolates are promising as biocontrol agents of postharvest green and blue molds of citrus fruits.

Abstract
Gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea is detrimental to plants and fruits. Endophytes have been shown to modify plant disease severity in functional assays. We conducted this study to investigate the endophytic strain Bacillus K1 with excellently antagonistic B. cinerea from the wild grape endosphere. We identified a wild grape endophytic strain K1 with high antifungal activity against B. cinerea both in vitro and in vivo. Combining the phylogenetic results based on 16S rDNA and genome sequencing, K1 was assigned as Bacillus subtilis. The in vitro results displayed that K1 and its volatile substances could significantly inhibit the mycelia growth of B. cinerea. Grape fruit inoculated with Bacillus K1 showed lower gray mold during treatment. The higher levels of defense-related enzymes, including peroxidase, polyphenol oxidase, and phenylalanine ammonia lyase, were induced in grapes after inoculation. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) suggested that K1 inhibited mycelial growth via bacterial colonization and antibiosis in grapes. The gas chromatography–mass spectrometry analysis identified 33 volatiles in which dibutyl phthalate was the major compound accounting for 74.28%. Dibutyl phthalate demonstrated strong activity in suppressing the mycelia growth of B. cinerea. Genome bioinformatics analysis revealed that the K1 chromosome harbored many known biosynthesis gene clusters encoding subtilosin, bacillaene, bacillibactin, bacilysin, and fengycin. This study provides a potential biological agent to control diseases of post-harvest grape fruit and improves our understanding of the possible biocontrol mechanisms of the Bacillus strain.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Botrytis cinerea can cause serious disease on lots of plant hosts during growth and postharvest storage. Biocontrol is known to be eco-friendly methods to control pathogens. Plant endophytic bacteria are generally considered as beneficial organisms, since they can promote plant growth and enhance plant immune system. Thus, screening biological control agents is very important for sustainable plant protection. RESULTS Fifty-six endophytic bacteria were obtained from wild grape. Sixteen isolates and their extracts exhibited significant antifungal activity against B. cinerea. Particularly, strain JRX-YG39 with the strongest inhibition ability had a broad-spectrum antifungal activity. Combining 16S rDNA analysis and the phylogenetic results based on gyrA and gyrB genes, JRX-YG39 was assigned as Bacillus velezensis. JRX-YG39 could produce bioactive VOCs and obviously depressed mycelia growth of B. cinerea. It was confirmed that VOCs released by JRX-YG39 could significantly promote growth and induce defense of Arabidopsis thaliana. Thirty-one bioactive secondary metabolites were further identified from JRX-YG39 culture by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry analysis. Dibutyl phthalate, a potential antifungal substance, was the major compound accounting for 78.65%. CONCLUSIONS B. velezensis JRX-YG39 has wide broad-spectrum antagonistic activity and significant plant promotion activity. Hence, B. velezensis JRX-YG39 will provide a valuable constituent of modern agricultural practice as biofertilizers and biocontrol agents.

Abstract
The Bacillus amyloliquefaciens group, composed of B. amyloliquefaciens, B. velezensis, B. nakamurai, and B. siamensis, has recently emerged as an interesting source of biocontrol agents for the management of pathogenic fungi. In this review, all the reports regarding the ability of these species to control postharvest fungal diseases have been covered for the first time. B. amyloliquefaciens species showed various antifungal mechanisms, including production of antifungal lipopeptides and volatile organic compounds, competition for nutrients, and induction of disease resistance. Most reports discussed their use for the control of fruit diseases. Several strains were studied in combination with additives, improving their inhibitory efficacies. In addition, a few strains have been commercialized. Overall, studies showed that B. amyloliquefaciens species are a suitable environmentally friendly alternative for the control of postharvest diseases. However, there are still crucial knowledge gaps to improve their efficacy and host range.

Abstract
In recent years, biological control has gained more attention as a promising method to combat plant disease. Such severe diseases cited include rice blasts caused by Magnaporthe oryzae. However, more effective microbial strains with strong adaptability still need to be identified. Therefore, we sought to assess the conidia germination, and formation of appressorium of DL76 in Magnaporthe oryzae. Besides, we also aimed at understanding the growth, multiple stress response and pathogenicity in Magnaporthe oryzae. We isolated Bacillus subtilis DL76 from a rice farm, which observed a strong antimicrobial effect on M. oryzae. The sterilized culture filtrate of DL76 inhibited the growth of M. oryzae, which motivated us to deduce the influence of DL76 on the pathogenicity of M. oryzae. We screened the effect of Bacillus subtilis DL76 on M. oryzae guy11. It demonstrated that sterilized culture filtrate (1 × 107 CFU/mL) of DL76 can delay and even suppress the germination of conidia and (1 × 107 and 1 × 106 CFU/mL) prevent the formation of appressorium in vitro and in vivo. DL76 became hypersensitive to osmotic, oxidative, and cell wall degrading agents. In addition, the relative transcript levels of stress-responsive genes oxidative and osmotic were down-regulated by DL76 except for sod1, cat1, and cat2. In vivo assessment of the antifungal activity of Bacillus subtilis using conidia suspension of DL76 reduced the incidence and severity of rice blast. Conclusively, our results show that DL76 is essential for controlling rice blast by inhibiting conidiation, growth, multiple stress tolerance, and pathogenicity in M. oryzae.

Abstract
The application of antibacterial lipopeptides is limited by high cost and low yield. Herein, the exogenous L-proline significantly improved lipopeptide production by Bacillus amyloliquefaciens HM618. A recombinant Corynebacterium glutamicum producing high levels of proline using genetically modifying proB and putA was used to establish consortium, to improve lipopeptide production of strain HM618. Compared to a pure culture, the levels of iturin A, fengycin, and surfactin in consortium reached 67.75, 39.32, and 37.25 mg L-1, respectively, an increase of 3.19-, 2.05-, and 1.63-fold over that produced by co-cultures of B. amyloliquefaciens and recombinant C. glutamicum with normal medium. Commercial amylase and recombinant Pichia pastoris with a heterologous amylase gene were used to hydrolyze kitchen waste. A three-strain consortium with recombinant P. pastoris and C. glutamicum increased the lipopeptide production of strain HM618 in medium containing KW. This work provides new strategies to improve lipopeptide production by B. amyloliquefaciens.

Abstract
Microbes are the biggest shareholder for the quantitative and qualitative deterioration of food commodities at different stages of production, transportation, and storage, along with the secretion of toxic secondary metabolites. Indiscriminate application of synthetic preservatives may develop resistance in microbial strains and associated complications in human health with broad-spectrum environmental non-sustainability. The application of essential oils (EOs) as a natural antimicrobial and their efficacy for the preservation of foods has been of present interest and growing consumer demand in the current generation. However, the loss in bioactivity of EOs from fluctuating environmental conditions is a major limitation during their practical application, which could be overcome by encapsulating them in a suitable biodegradable and biocompatible polymer matrix with enhancement to their efficacy and stability. Among different nanoencapsulated systems, nanoemulsions effectively contribute to the practical applications of EOs by expanding their dispersibility and foster their controlled delivery in food systems. In line with the above background, this review aims to present the practical application of nanoemulsions (a) by addressing their direct and indirect (EO nanoemulsion coating leading to active packaging) consistent support in a real food system, (b) biochemical actions related to antimicrobial mechanisms, (c) effectiveness of nanoemulsion as bio-nanosensor with large scale practical applicability, (d) critical evaluation of toxicity, safety, and regulatory issues, and (e) market demand of nanoemulsion in pharmaceuticals and nutraceuticals along with the current challenges and future opportunities.

Abstract
Recent changes in food purchasing and consumption have led consumers to place greater importance on aspects such as convenience and the impact of food production and processing on health and the environment. This, in turn, poses a challenge for the food industry, especially with respect to highly perishable foods such as fruit. Great efforts have been made by the industry to reduce post-harvest losses by using natural preservatives that can replace traditional chemical fungicides, which are increasingly rejected by both citizens and governments. In this context, the purpose of this study was to obtain an overview of consumer perceptions towards the application of these novel products in fruit. In order to achieve this goal, five focus group sessions were held in multiple Spanish cities from December 2019 to February 2020. A total of 48 people with a mixed socio-demographic background took part in the study. The results showed both positive and negative consumer perceptions towards fruit, on the one hand being healthy and natural, and on the other lacking convenience. Packaging increases fruit convenience at the cost of its perception as a natural food product. In addition, consumers reported negative opinions associated with both the use of chemicals to improve fruit preservation and the environmental impact of the packaging. Participants showed interest in the use of natural preservatives in fruit, as these are considered more natural, healthier and more environmentally friendly. Although natural preservatives can influence consumers' fruit purchasing decisions, lack of information about such preservatives can cause doubts about their effectiveness and misjudgements about the price premium they add. Therefore, information about these types of preservatives, their characteristics and their benefits is key to overcoming mistrust and communicating to consumers the differentiation that their use adds to foods.

Abstract
The endophytic bacterial strain Hil4 was isolated from leaves of the medicinal plant Hypericum hircinum. It exhibited antifungal activity against Botrytis cinerea and a plethora of plant growth promoting traits in vitro. Whole genome sequencing revealed that it belongs to Bacillus halotolerans and possesses numerous secondary metabolite biosynthetic gene clusters and genes involved in plant growth promotion, colonization, and plant defense elicitation. The Mojavensin cluster was present in the genome, making this strain novel among plant-associated B. halotolerans strains. Extracts of secreted agar-diffusible compounds from single culture secretome extracts and dual cultures with B. cinerea were bioactive and had the same antifungal pattern on TLC plates after bioautography. UHPLC-HRMS analysis of the single culture secretome extract putatively annotated the consecutively produced antimicrobial substances and ISR elicitors. The isolate also proved efficient in minimizing the severity of gray mold post-harvest disease on table grape berries, as well as cherry tomatoes. Finally, it positively influenced the growth of Arabidopsis thaliana Col-0 and Solanum lycopersicum var. Chondrokatsari Messinias after seed biopriming in vitro. Overall, these results indicate that the B. halotolerans strain Hil4 is a promising novel plant growth promoting and biocontrol agent, and can be used in future research for the development of biostimulants and/or biological control agents.

Abstract
Food bio-preservatives are requested as substituents of chemical pesticides in food. The aim of this study was to carry out a screening of twenty biocontrol agents (BCAs) for their potential fungicidal activity in vitro. Twenty BCAs were tested against ten pathogenic fungi. Some of the cell-free supernatants (CFS) tested showed in vitro antifungal activity versus pathogenic fungi. The highest fungicidal activity was observed in the fermented CFS of Paenibacillus chibensis CECT 375, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens CECT 493, and Pantoea agglomerans CECT 850, which showed a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) and minimum fungicidal concentration (MFC) values of 125 and 250 g/L, respectively. The compounds responsible for the antifungal activity, such as organic and phenolic acids, were determined. Lactic acid, acetic acid, benzoic acid, and phenyllactic acid among others can be related to antifungal activity. HPLC-MS/MS analysis showed a reduction of ochratoxin A (OTA) and aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) up to 26% (Paenibacillus alvei CECT 2) and 55% (Paenibacillus polymyxa CECT 155), respectively. The present study prompts that metabolism products of BCAs are propitious for the bioconservation of food, due to their ability to reduce the proliferation of mycotoxigenic fungi and mycotoxins production.

Abstract
Strawberry is a very popular fruit with a special taste, color, and nutritional value. Anthracnose caused by Colletotrichum fragariae severely limits fruit shelf life during post-harvest storage. Use of traditional chemical fungicides leads to serious environment pollution and threatens food safety. Biocontrol is considered as a promising strategy to manage the post-harvest fruit diseases. Here, strain QN1NO-4 isolated from noni (Morinda citrifolia L.) fruit exhibited a high antifungal activity against C. fragariae. Based on its physicochemical profiles and phylogenetic tree of the 16S rRNA sequence, strain QN1NO-4 belonged to the genus Bacillus. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) calculated by comparing two standard strain genomes was below 95-96%, suggesting that the strain might be a novel species of the genus Bacillus and named as Bacillus safensis sp. QN1NO-4. Its extract effectively reduced the incidence of strawberry anthracnose of harvested fruit. Fruit weight and TSS contents were also maintained significantly. The antifungal mechanism assays indicated that the extract of the test antagonist inhibited mycelial growth and spore germination of C. fragariae in vitro. Cells of strain QN1NO-4 demonstrated the cytoplasmic heterogeneity, disappeared organelles, and ruptured ultrastructure. Notably, the strain extract also had a broad-spectrum antifungal activity. Compared with the whole genome of strain QN1NO-4, several functional gene clusters involved in the biosynthesis of active secondary metabolites were observed. Fifteen compounds were identified by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Hence, the fruit endophyte B. safensis sp. QN1NO-4 is a potential bio-agent identified for the management of post-harvest disease of strawberry fruit.

Abstract
One of the most significant challenges associated with postharvest apple deterioration is the blue mold caused by Penicillium expansum, which leads to considerable economic losses to apple production industries. Apple fruits are susceptible to mold infection owing to their high nutrient and water content, and current physical control methods can delay but cannot completely inhibit P. expansum growth. Biological control methods present promising alternatives; however, they are not always cost effective and have application restrictions. P. expansum infection not only enhances disease pathogenicity, but also inhibits the expression of host-related defense genes. The implementation of new ways to investigate and control P. expansum are expected with the advent of omics technology. Advances in these techniques, together with molecular biology approaches such as targeted gene deletion and whole genome sequencing, will lead to a better understanding of the P. expansum infectious machinery. Here, we review the progress of research on the blue mold disease caused by P. expansum in apples, including physiological and molecular infection mechanisms, as well as various methods to control this common plant pathogen.

Abstract
Rice blast, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, is one of the three major diseases affecting rice production and quality; it reduces rice grain yield by nearly 30%. In the early stage of this study, a strain of Bacillus velezensis with strong inhibition of M. oryzae was isolated and named ZW10. In vitro assays indicated prolonged germination time of conidia of M. oryzae treated with the antifungal substances of ZW10, 78% of the conidia could not form appressorium, and the conidial tubes expanded to form vacuolar structure and then shrank. The results of FDA-PI composite dyes showed that the antifungal substances of ZW10 inhibited the normal activity of M. oryzae hyphae that were rarely able to infect the epidermal cells of rice leaf sheath in vivo tests. In addition, rice treated with the antifungal substances of ZW10 showed a variety of defense responses, including activation of defense-related enzymes, increased expression of the salicylic acid pathway genes, and accumulation of hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), which might function directly or indirectly in resistance to pathogen attack. The field experiment with rice blast infection in different periods showed that the antifungal substances of ZW10 had the same control effect as carbendazim. The significant biological control activity of ZW10 and its capacity to stimulate host defenses suggest that this B. velezensis strain has the potential to be developed into a biopesticide for the biocontrol of rice blast.

Abstract
Botrytis bunch rot caused by Botrytis cinerea is one of the most economically significant post-harvest diseases of grapes. In the present study, we showed that the bacterial strain Bvel1 is phylogenetically affiliated to Bacillus velezensis species. The strain Bvel1 and its secreted metabolites exerted an antifungal activity, under in vitro conditions, against B. cinerea. UHPLC-HRMS chemical analysis revealed that iturin A2, surfactin-C13 and -C15, oxydifficidin, bacillibactin, L-dihydroanticapsin, and azelaic acid were among the metabolites secreted by Bvel1. Treatment of wounded grape berries with Bacillus sp. Bvel1 cell culture was effective for controlling grey mold ingress and expansion in vivo. The effectiveness of this biological control agent was a function of the cell culture concentration of the antagonist applied, while preventive treatment proved to be more effective compared to curative. The strain Bvel1 exhibited an adequate colonization efficiency in wounded grapes. The whole-genome phylogeny, combined with ANI and dDDH analyses, provided compelling evidence that the strain Bvel1 should be taxonomically classified as Bacillus velezensis. Genome mining approaches showed that the strain Bvel1 harbors 13 antimicrobial biosynthetic gene clusters, including iturin A, fengycin, surfactin, bacilysin, difficidin, bacillaene, and bacillibactin. The results provide new insights into the understanding of the endophytic Bacillus velezensis Bvel1 biocontrol mechanism against post-harvest fungal pathogens, including bunch rot disease in grape berries.

Abstract
AIMS The present study evaluated, for the first time, the inhibitory effects of the filtrate of Purpureocillium lilacinum against Penicillium digitatum. METHODS AND RESULTS No direct contact between P. lilacinum and P. digitatum was observed during the dual culture test and the inhibition zone was 6·1 mm. The filtrate of P. lilacinum completely inhibited P. digitatum growth and spore germination at the concentration of 64%. The filtrate increased the permeability of the cell membrane and the content of MDA in P. digitatum. The ergosterol content in P. digitatum was strongly inhibited at 32% by 81·1%. The green mould incidence and severity in filtrate-treated fruit at 64% were 71·7 and 80·7% lower than in the control, respectively. The filtrate enhanced the activity of PAL, PPO and POD enzymes in orange fruit. The POD and PAL gene expression levels were significantly upregulated in the fruit treated with the filtrate. CONCLUSIONS This study indicated that the antifungal mechanism of P. lilacinum filtrate against P. digitatum is mainly by the damage of the fungal cell membrane and its components. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY This work provides the pioneer evidence on the application of P. lilacinum filtrate as a novel biocontrol agent for orange green mould.

Abstract
Blue mold caused by Penicillium expansum is one of the most significant postharvest diseases of apples. Some microorganisms associated with the surface of ripening apples possess the ability to inhibit the growth of P. expansum. However, the existing literature about their colonization in the stages before ripening is not explored in depth. This study aims to characterize the antagonistic capacity of bacterial populations from five fruit development stages of 'Royal Gala' apples. The results have shown that the density of the bacterial populations decreases throughout the ripening stages of fruit (from 1.0 × 105 to 1.1 × 101 cfu/cm2). A total of 25 bacterial morphotypes (corresponding to five genera identified by 16S RNA) were differentiated in which Bacillus stood out as a predominant genus. In the in vitro antagonism tests, 10 Bacillus strains (40%) inhibited the mycelial growth of P. expansum from 30.1% to 60.1%, while in fruit bioassays, the same strains reduced the fruit rot ranging from 12% to 66%. Moreover, the bacterial strains with antagonistic activity increased in the ripening fruit stage. B. subtilis subsp. spiziennii M24 obtained the highest antagonistic activity (66.9% of rot reduction). The matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization- time of flight mass spectrometry analysis revealed that bacteria with antagonistic activity produce antifungal lipopeptides from iturin and fengycin families.

Abstract
Bacillus amyloliquefaciens has been widely used in the agriculture, food, and medicine industries. Isolate PP19 was obtained from the litchi fruit carposphere and showed biocontrol efficacy against litchi downy blight (LDB) whether applied preharvest or postharvest. To further understand the underlying regulatory mechanisms, the genome of PP19 was sequenced and analyzed. The genome comprised a 3,847,565 bp circular chromosome containing 3990 protein-coding genes and 121 RNA genes. It has the smallest genome among 36 sequenced strains of B. amyloliquefaciens except for RD7-7. In whole genome phylogenetic analysis, PP19 was clustered into a group with known industrial applications, indicating that it may also produce high-yield metabolites that have yet to be identified. A large chromosome structural variation and large numbers of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) between PP19 (industrial strain) and UMAF6639 (plant-associated strain) were detected through comparative analysis, which may shed light on their functional differences. Preharvest treatment with PP19 enhanced resistance to LDB, by decreasing the plant H2O2 content and increasing the SOD activity. This is the first report of an industrial strain of B. amyloliquefaciens showing a plant-associated function and with major potential for the biocontrol of LDB.

Abstract
To isolate Bacillus velezensis mutants with improved antifungal activity for use in the biological control of phytopathogenic fungi, wild-type Bacillus velezensis KRF-001 producing iturin, surfactin, and fengycin was irradiated by ultraviolet (UV) rays. The in vitro and in vivo antifungal activities of UV mutants and characterization of the cyclic lipopeptides produced by a selected mutant were examined. A mutant strain yielding high levels of iturin showed over 2-fold higher antifungal activity than the wild-type against Fusarium oxysporum. A potent suppressive effect of the mutant was also observed on spore germination of Botrytis cinerea, the causative agent of cucumber gray mold, at different butanol extract concentrations. Further analysis of the mutant by real-time PCR and high-performance liquid chromatography revealed increased expression of iturin and surfactin biosynthesis genes as well as enhanced production of iturin and surfactin metabolites. However, the amounts of fengycin obtained from the mutant strain BSM54 were significantly lesser than those of iturin and surfactin. Particularly, iturin A production by the mutant was 3.5-fold higher than that of the wild-type, suggesting that the higher antifungal activity of the mutant against F. oxysporum resulted from the increased expression of biosynthesis genes associated with iturin production. The commercial greenhouse experiment using soil naturally infested with Sclerotinia sclerotiorum (sclerotinia rot) and F. oxysporum (fusarium wilt) showed that the mutant strain reduced sclerotinia rot and fusarium wilt diseases (P = 0.05) more effectively than the wild-type and commercially available product Cillus® in Korea. These results suggest that the mutant with high iturin yield is a potential candidate for the development of a biological control agent in agriculture.

Abstract
Brown rot caused by Monilinia fructicola has led to considerable preharvest and postharvest losses in all major nectarine fruit-growing areas. In our previous study, we successfully identified a biocontrol strain of bacteria, Bacillus licheniformis W10, that can be used to control brown rot. However, the possible mechanism of the control of brown rot by B. licheniformis W10 is still unclear. Therefore, the objectives of this study were to determine whether B. licheniformis W10 induces resistance by activating defense-related enzymes including antioxidant enzymes in nectarine. Treatment of nectarine fruit with B. licheniformis W10 reduced both M. fructicola-induced oxidative damage and reactive oxygen species (ROS) production. Furthermore, application of B. licheniformis to nectarine fruit resulted in a significant increase in the activity of antioxidant and defense-related enzymes and increase in the expression of the corresponding genes. Overall, our results verified the proposed mechanism of B. licheniformis W10 in controlling M. fructicola via regulation of ROS levels and activation of antioxidant and defense-related enzymes.

Abstract
The Xinyu tangerine (Citrus reticulata Blanco) is a non-climacteric fruit that is widely cultivated and consumed in China but highly susceptible to fungal infections. Antagonistic microorganisms can control postharvest diseases and extend the storage life of citrus fruits. However, little work has been done to investigate the effects of applying Paenibacillus brasilensis YS-1 by immersion to enhance the cold storability of Xinyu tangerines. Fruits were soaked with P. brasilensis YS-1 fermented filtrates for 10 min and in sterile water as the control. The decay incidence, weight loss, nutrient content, respiration rate, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, and defensive enzymes activities in citrus fruit were measured during cold storage at 5 ± 0.5 °C. The results showed that P. brasilensis YS-1 treatment significantly reduced postharvest decay and effectively maintained the nutritional quality compared to the control under cold storage. The weight loss, respiration rate, and MDA content were lower in P. brasilensis YS-1-treated fruits than the control fruits, indicating that P. brasilensis YS-1 treatment increased the activities of superoxide dismutase (SOD), peroxidase (POD), polyphenol oxidase (PPO), and phenylalnine ammonia-lyase (PAL). According to the results, a postharvest application of P. brasilensis YS-1 can control the postharvest decay and maintain fruit quality, as well as increase the defensive enzyme activity, so as to achieve the purpose of retarding postharvest senescence in citrus fruit.

Abstract
Patulin (PAT) is a mycotoxin that can contaminate many foods and especially fruits and fruit-based products. Therefore, accurate and effective testing is necessary to enable producers to comply with regulations and promote food safety. Traditional approaches involving the use of chemical compounds or physical treatments in food have provided practical methods that have been used to date. However, growing concerns about environmental and health problems associated with these approaches call for new alternatives. In contrast, recent advances in biotechnology have revolutionized the understanding of living organisms and brought more effective biological tools. This review, therefore, focuses on the study of biotechnology approaches for the detection, control, and mitigation of PAT in food. Future aspects of biotechnology development to overcome the food safety problem posed by PAT were also examined. We find that biotechnology advances offer novel, more effective, and environmental friendly approaches for the control and elimination of PAT in food compared to traditional methods. Biosensors represent the future of PAT detection and use biological tools such as aptamer, enzyme, and antibody. PAT prevention strategies include microbial biocontrol, the use of antifungal biomolecules, and the use of microorganisms in combination with antifungal molecules. PAT detoxification aims at the breakdown and removal of PAT in food by using enzymes, microorganisms, and various adsorbent biopolymers. Finally, biotechnology advances will be dependent on the understanding of fundamental biology of living organisms regarding PAT synthesis and resistance mechanisms.

Abstract
We investigated the effects and possible mechanisms of Bacillus amyloliquefaciens NCPSJ7 against the gray mold caused by Botrytis cinerea in the postharvest Red Globe grapes. The disease incidence, lesion diameter, decay index, and some resistance‐related enzymes were evaluated. The antioxidant capacity of grape treated with 1 × 104 CFU/ml B. cinerea alone and combined with 1 × 107 CFU/ml NCPSJ7 was also determined. The results showed that NCPSJ7 + B. cinerea reduced the disease incidence, lesion diameter, and decay index of postharvest grapes and enhanced the activities of polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, chitinase, and β‐1,3‐glucanase during different storage periods. Furthermore, the oxidative resistance, demonstrated by an escalating trend in the total phenolic content, DPPH free radical clearance rate, reducing power, and superoxide anion clearance rate after lesion presence, was improved. However, NCPSJ7 showed an inhibitory effect on gray mold, but resulted in the reduced antioxidant capacity in the grapes.

Abstract
Six commercial biocontrol agents (BCAs, containing Aureobasidium pullulans, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens, Bacillus amyloliquefaciens plantarum, Bacillus subtilis, Pythium oligandrum, or Trichoderma atroviride) were applied to ripening berries that were then incubated at one of four temperatures (T, 15, 20, 25, and 30°C) and one of four relative humidity levels (RH, 60, 80, 90, and 100%). After 1 to 13 days of incubation (BCA colonization period), the berries were inoculated with conidia of Botrytis cinerea and kept at 25°C and 100% RH for 7 days, at which time Botrytis bunch rot (BBR) was assessed. The response of BBR control to T/RH conditions and BCA colonization period differed among BCAs; the coefficients of variation among the BCAs ranged from 44.7 to 72.4%. An equation was developed that accounted for the combined effects of T, RH, and BCA colonization period on BBR control. The equation, which had an R2>0.94, could help farmers select the BCA to be used for a specific application based on weather conditions at the time of treatment and in the following days.

Abstract
This study aimed at evaluating the antagonistic activity of 16 bacterial strains for the control of brown rot disease caused by Monilinia fructigena, and M. laxa under in vitro and a semi-commercial large-scale trial. These bacterial antagonists' belonging to the genera Alcaligenes, Bacillus, Brevibacterium, Pantoea, Pseudomonas, and Serratia were previously proven effective for control of fire blight of apple. The in vitro dual culture bioassay showed the highest inhibition rates of mycelial growth ranging from 55 to 95% and from 43 to 94% for M. fructigena and M. laxa, respectively. The in vivo bioassay showed moderate and strong inhibition for M. fructigena and M. laxa, respectively. The inhibition rates were dependent on incubation time as well as pathogen virulence. The free-cell bacterial filtrate revealed substantial mycelial growth inhibition ranging from 66 to 86%. The inhibition of conidial germination was from 32 to 78%, suggesting the involvement of metabolites in their biocontrol activity. The antifungal effect of the volatile compounds (VCOs) was observed for all bacteria with mycelial inhibition varying from 12 to 70%. Overall, their efficacy was substantially affected by the nature of the bacterial strains and the modes of action. Taken together, these results underscore that ACBC1 and SF14 for M. fructigena and SP10 and ACBP1 for M. laxa were the most effective bacterial strains. These strains were confirmed effective in a semi-commercial large-scale trial. Interestingly, their efficacies were found to be comparable to those of both commercial BCAs (B. subtilis Y1336 and P. agglomerans P10c), but slightly lower than thiophanate-methyl fungicide. The ability of most bacterial strains to produce lytic enzymes (Amylase, Protease or Cellulase) and lipopeptides (bacillomycin, fengycin, iturin and surfactin) was demonstrated by biochemical and molecular analyzes. Therefore, our findings suggest that the bacterial antagonists ACBC1, SF14, SP10 and ACBP1, have the potential to prevent brown rot disease.

Abstract
Biological control as a promising method to combat plant disease has gained public attention in recent years. In the present study, we isolated 12 strains resistant to Magnaporthe oryzae from western Sichuan subalpine soil. Among them, CQ07 exhibited remarkable activity against M. oryzae. The result of 16S rRNA sequence analysis revealed that CQ07 is approximately 99% similar to Bacillus australimaris. The sterilized culture filtrate of CQ07 inhibited the growth of M. oryzae, which motivated us to deduce the influence of CQ07 on the pathogenicity of M. oryzae. As shown by experimentation, sterilized culture filtrate (10 μl/ml) of CQ07 can delay and even suppress the germination of conidia and prevent the formation of appressorium in vitro and in vivo. In addition, by simulative field tests, the spraying of conidia suspension diluted with sterilized culture filtrate of CQ07 reduced infection of rice blast. To better control rice blasts, understanding the infection mechanism of M. oryzae and inhibiting the mechanism of the antagonistic strain is of great importance.

Abstract
Citrus are vulnerable to the postharvest decay caused by Penicillium digitatum, Penicillium italicum, and Geotrichum citri-aurantii, which are responsible for the green mold, blue mold, and sour rot post-harvest disease, respectively. The widespread economic losses in citriculture caused by these phytopathogens are minimized with the use of synthetic fungicides such as imazalil, thiabendazole, pyrimethanil, and fludioxonil, which are mainly employed as control agents and may have harmful effects on human health and environment. To date, numerous non-chemical postharvest treatments have been investigated for the control of these pathogens. Several studies demonstrated that biological control using microbial antagonists and natural products can be effective in controlling postharvest diseases in citrus, as well as the most used commercial fungicides. Therefore, microbial agents represent a considerably safer and low toxicity alternative to synthetic fungicides. In the present review, these biological control strategies as alternative to the chemical fungicides are summarized here and new challenges regarding the development of shelf-stable formulated biocontrol products are also discussed.

Abstract
Postharvest fungal diseases are among the main causes of fresh fruit losses. Chemical control is against claims for "natural" or "chemical-free" products. Biocontrol agents, such as antifungal proteins or their producing moulds, may serve to combat unwanted pathogens. Since the effectiveness of these bioprotective agents depends on the food substrate, their effect must be tested on fruits. The objective of this work was to study the effect of the antifungal protein PgAFP and its producer, Penicillium chrysogenum, against Penicillium expansum and Penicillium digitatum growth on apple and oranges respectively, and the PgAFP effect on eleven P. expansum, Penicillium italicum, and P. digitatum strains in vitro, and on patulin production on apple substrate. The sensitivity upon PgAFP was P. digitatum > P. expansum > P. italicum. In oranges, broadly, no inhibitory effect was obtained. PgAFP and P. chrysogenum did not inhibit the P. expansum CMP-1 growth on Golden Delicious apples, however, a successful effect was achieved on Royal Gala apples. On apple substrate, patulin production by P. expansum CMP-1 rose in parallel to PgAFP concentrations, linked with high reactive oxygen species levels. PgAFP cannot be proposed as a bioprotective agent on apple. However, P. chrysogenum is a promising agent to be used on Royal Gala apples.

Abstract
This review deals with the main mechanisms of action exerted by antagonistic bacteria, such as competition for space and nutrients, suppression via siderophores, hydrolytic enzymes, antibiosis, biofilm formation, and induction of plant resistance. These mechanisms inhibit phytopathogen growth that affects postharvest fruit since quality and safety parameters are influenced by the action of these microorganisms, which cause production losses in more than 50% of fruit tree species. The use of synthetic fungicide products has been the dominant control strategy for diseases caused by fungi. However, their excessive and inappropriate use in intensive agriculture has brought about problems that have led to environmental contamination, considerable residues in agricultural products, and phytopathogen resistance. Thus, there is a need to generate alternatives that are safe, ecological, and economically viable to face this problem. Phytopathogen inhibition in fruit utilizing antagonist microorganisms has been recognized as a type of biological control (BC), which could represent a viable and environmentally safe alternative to synthetic fungicides. Despite the ecological benefit that derives from the use of controllers and biological control agents (BCA) at a commercial level, their application and efficient use has been minimal at a global level.
