Abstract
Probiotics play an essential role in the largemouth bass (Micropterus salmoides) aquaculture sector. They aid the fish in sickness prevention, intestinal structure improvement, food absorption, and immune system strengthening. In this experiment, Bacillus subtilis (BS, 107 CFU/g) and Lactobacillus reuteri (LR, 107 CFU/g) were added to the feed and then fed to M. salmoides for 35 days. The effects of two probiotics on the growth, immunity, and metabolism of M. salmoides organisms were studied. The results revealed that the BS group significantly increased the growth rate and specific growth rate of M. salmoides, while both the BS and LR groups significantly increase the length of villi M. salmoides intestines. The BS group significantly increased the levels of AKP, T-AOC, and CAT in the blood of M. salmoides, as well as AKP levels in the intestine. Furthermore, the BS group significantly increased the expression of intestinal genes Nrf2, SOD1, GPX, and CAT, while significantly decreasing the expression of the keap1 gene. M. salmoides gut microbial analysis showed that the abundance of Planctomycetota was significantly different in both control and experimental groups. Analyzed at the genus level, the abundance of Citrobacter, Paracoccus, Luedemannella, Sphingomonas, Streptomyces and Xanthomonas in the both control and experimental groups were significantly different. The BS group's differentially expressed genes were predominantly enriched in oxidative phosphorylation pathways in the intestine, indicating that they had a good influence on intestinal metabolism and inflammation suppression. In contrast, differentially expressed genes in the LR group were primarily enriched in the insulin signaling and linoleic acid metabolism pathways, indicating improved intestine metabolic performance. In conclusion, B. subtilis and L. reuteri improve the growth and health of M. salmoides, indicating tremendous potential for enhancing intestinal metabolism and providing significant application value.

Abstract
The study isolated two strains of intestinal autochthonous bacteria Lactiplantibacillus plantarum1 (MH155966.1) (L1) and Lactiplantibacillus plantarum2 (MH105076.1) (L2) from the Choobdeh Abadan region. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of different strains of probiotic bacteria on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, histopathologic and histomorphometric characterization of the intestine, expression of immune and growth related genes, and evaluate Lates calcarifer resistance against Vibrio alginolyticus. To achieve this, for each treatment 60 L. calcarifer juveniles (75 ± 12 g) were randomly distributed in three fiberglass tanks (300 L) and fed for 45 days. The treatments were established as Diet 1 (control diet); L1 (diet with Lb. plantarum isolated 1); L2 (diet with Lb. plantarum isolated 2) with a bacterial concentration of 1 × 109 CFU/g. Nine fish from each treatment were sampled and examined, after euthanasia. The fish were placed 2 cm from the beginning of the intestine for microscopic sampling of villi height, villi width and thickness of the epithelium, with 3 treatments: The result showed differences in the mean values of total weight were found at the end of the experiment. After 45 days of culture, the fish fed with L1 had higher (P < 0.05) growth performance than the other treatment groups. But at the end of the trial, in L2, the digestive enzyme activities were higher (P < 0.05) than the other treatment groups. The fishes fed diets supplemented with the L2 group, like the digestive enzyme activities test, presented an increase in the thickness of the epithelium of the intestine, and villus height, and villus width were greatest in L2. Fish feeding with L1 and L2 probiotics induced higher transcription levels of interleukin-10 (IL-10), granulocyte-macrophage colony-forming cells (GMCFC), epidermal growth factor (EGF), and Transforming Growth Factor Beta (TGF-β) genes in the gut, which may correlate with better immune and hematological parameters in these groups. The results of the challenge test revealed that the percentage of survival was significantly higher in L1 (76.2%) and L2 (80.95%) treatments than in the control (P < 0.05). These results indicate that host-derived probiotics (Lb. plantarum) have significant potential as important probiotics to enhance nutrient utilization, Digestive enzymes, and metabolism by increasing the gut surface area of Lates calcarifer juveniles at 45 days of culture.

Abstract
2-ethylhexyl-4-methoxycinnamate (EHMC) is a commonly used UV filter, and is receiving increasing concerns due to its ubiquitous occurrence in a variety of environmental media and potential adverse effects. This study was aimed to assess the ecotoxicological potentials of EHMC on the marine polychaete Perinereis aibuhitensis. To this end, ragworms were exposed to 2, 20, 200 μg/L EHMC for 14 days and multiple toxicological endpoints were investigated. The results showed that EHMC significantly reduced burrowing rate, but did not affect AChE activity. Exposure to EHMC significantly elevated the activities of SOD and CAT and decreased the levels of lipid peroxidation. Besides, the induction of AKP activity indicated a stimulated immune response in the ragworms when exposed to high concentration of EHMC. Furthermore, the upregulated expression of caspase-8 suggested that EHMC might induce apoptosis in ragworms via the death receptor-mediated extrinsic pathway. Our findings highlight the potential environmental risks of EHMC to marine ecosystems.

Abstract
Introduction Ingestion of human milk (HM) is identified as a significant factor associated with early infant gut microbial colonization, which has been associated with infant health and development. Maternal diet has been associated with the HM microbiome (HMM). However, a few studies have explored the associations among maternal diet, HMM, and infant growth during the first 6 months of lactation. Methods For this cross-sectional study, Mam-Mayan mother-infant dyads (n = 64) were recruited from 8 rural communities in the Western Highlands of Guatemala at two stages of lactation: early (6-46 days postpartum, n = 29) or late (109-184 days postpartum, n = 35). Recruited mothers had vaginally delivered singleton births, had no subclinical mastitis or antibiotic treatments, and breastfed their infants. Data collected at both stages of lactation included two 24-h recalls, milk samples, and infant growth status indicators: head-circumference-for-age-z-score (HCAZ), length-for-age-z-score (LAZ), and weight-for-age-z-score (WAZ). Infants were divided into subgroups: normal weight (WAZ ≥ -1SD) and mildly underweight (WAZ < -1SD), non-stunted (LAZ ≥ -1.5SD) and mildly stunted (LAZ < -1.5SD), and normal head-circumference (HCAZ ≥ -1SD) and smaller head-circumference (HCAZ < -1SD). HMM was identified using 16S rRNA gene sequencing; amplicon analysis was performed with the high-resolution ANCHOR pipeline, and DESeq2 identified the differentially abundant (DA) HMM at the species-level between infant growth groups (FDR < 0.05) in both early and late lactation. Results Using both cluster and univariate analyses, we identified (a) positive correlations between infant growth clusters and maternal dietary clusters, (b) both positive and negative associations among maternal macronutrient and micronutrient intakes with the HMM at the species level and (c) distinct correlations between HMM DA taxa with maternal nutrient intakes and infant z-scores that differed between breast-fed infants experiencing growth faltering and normal growth in early and late lactation. Conclusion Collectively, these findings provide important evidence of the potential influence of maternal diet on the early-life growth of breastfed infants via modulation of the HMM.

Abstract
Seawater temperature change is an important concern for seed production and pond culture of sea cucumbers. The present study found that tentacle activity frequency was significantly lower in sea cucumbers exposed to continuous and rapid temperature increases than that of those at ambient temperature. Feeding behavior directly determines food intake, and further affects physiology and growth efficiency of sea cucumbers. This means that the decline in feeding caused by continuous and rapid temperature increases needs to be addressed in sea cucumber aquaculture. However, a sudden temperature change of 5 °C had no significant effect on behaviors of sea cucumbers. This indicates that continuous temperature increases, rather than a sudden increase, result in behavioral impacts on sea cucumbers. Therefore, we recommend aqua-farmers reduce the feeding amount for sea cucumbers during continuous and rapid temperature increases. In the present study, feeding behavior was significantly higher in sea cucumbers fed with 3% dietary tryptophan than that of those fed with 0% and 5% dietary tryptophan. This indicates that 3% dietary tryptophan increases the food intake of sea cucumbers, and mitigates the feeding decline caused by continuous and rapid temperature increase. This indicates that tryptophan has the potential to promote the feeding of sea cucumbers in seed production and pond culture. Adhesion capacity of sea cucumbers fed with 5% dietary tryptophan was significantly higher than that of individuals fed with 0% and 3% dietary tryptophan. This suggests that dietary tryptophan increases the feeding of sea cucumbers exposed to continuous and rapid temperature increases in pond culture and seed production. In addition, this study found that sea cucumbers fed with 3% dietary tryptophan had higher intestinal colony richness under the continuously rapid temperature change. The present study provides an effective method to improve adhesion behavior and to alleviate the impacts on feeding behavior for seed production and pond culture of sea cucumbers exposed to continuous and rapid temperature increases.

Abstract
The providers of butyric acid, Clostridium butyricum (CB), sodium butyrate (SB), and tributyrin (TB), have been extensively studied as aquafeed additives in recent years. However, no comparative study has been reported on the probiotic effects of CB, SB, and TB as feed additives on sea cucumber (Apostichopus japonicus). A 63-day feeding trial was performed to assess the effects of dietary live cells of C. butyricum (CB group, the basal diet supplemented with 1% CB), sodium butyrate (SB group, the basal diet supplemented with 1% SB), and tributyrin (TB group, the basal diet supplemented with 1% TB) on the growth, non-specific immunity, and intestinal microbiota of A. japonicus with a basal diet group as the control. Results indicated that all three additives considerably increased A. japonicus growth, with dietary CB having the optimal growth-promoting effect. Of the seven non-specific enzyme parameters measured in coelomocytes of A. japonicus (i.e., the activities of phagocytosis, respiratory burst, superoxide dismutase, alkaline phosphatase, acid phosphatase, catalase, and lysozyme), dietary CB, SB, and TB considerably increased the activities of six, five, and six of them, respectively. The immune genes (Aj-p105, Aj-p50, Aj-rel, and Aj-lys) expression in the mid-intestine tissues of A. japonicus was significantly increased by all three additives. The CB group had the highest expression of all four genes. Additionally, the relative expression of Aj-p105, Aj-p50, and Aj-lys genes was significantly up-regulated in the three additive groups after stimulation with inactivated Vibrio splendidus. Dietary CB enhanced the intestinal microbial diversity and richness in A. japonicus while dietary TB decreased them. Meanwhile, dietary CB, SB, and TB significantly enhanced the abundance of Firmicutes, unclassified_f_Rhodobacteraceae, and Proteobacteria, respectively, while dietary CB and SB reduced the abundance of Vibrio. Dietary CB and SB improved the stability of microbial ecosystem in the intestine of A. japonicus. In contrast, dietary TB appeared to have a negative effect on the stability of intestinal microbial ecosystem. All three additives improved the intestinal microbial functions associated with energy production and immunity regulation pathways, which may contribute directly to growth promotion and non-specific immunity enhancement in A. japonicus. Collectively, in terms of enhancing growth and non-specific immunity, as well as improving intestinal microbiota, dietary live cells of C. butyricum exhibited the most effective effects in A. japonicus.

Abstract
Selecting high-quality seeds with long-term advantages in behavior, intestinal health, and growth are the key to improve production efficiency of sea cucumber aquaculture. It is proposed to distinguish the seed quality of sea cucumbers by color morphs. In the present study, we carried out a 6-week experiment to investigate behavior, intestinal health, and growth of small sea cucumbers Apostichopus japonicus in different color morphs. We found that dark-colored seeds of sea cucumber were significantly more adhesive than those with light-colored seeds. This indicates that the dark-colored seeds of A. japonicus are more adaptive in complex environments in stock enhancement. Food consumption and defecation outputs of dark-colored seeds were significantly higher than those of light-colored seeds. In addition, the feces of dark-colored seeds of sea cucumber had significantly lower crude protein content and better intestinal morphology, but there was no advantage in digestive enzyme activities. This suggests that there are potential digestive benefits in dark-colored seeds. Further, dark-colored seeds of A. japonicus showed significantly better intestinal microbiota composition and faster growth rate than that of light-colored seeds. In conclusion, the present results prove that dark-colored seeds of sea cucumber have long-term advantages in behavior, intestinal health and growth. Overall, this study provides important information for the early selection of seeds and the consequent production efficiency in sea cucumber aquaculture.

Abstract
Aquaculture is a fast-emerging food-producing sector in which fishery production plays an imperative socio-economic role, providing ample resources and tremendous potential worldwide. However, aquatic animals are exposed to the deterioration of the ecological environment and infection outbreaks, which represent significant issues nowadays. One of the reasons for these threats is the excessive use of antibiotics and synthetic drugs that have harmful impacts on the aquatic atmosphere. It is not surprising that functional and nature-based feed ingredients such as probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, and synbiotics have been developed as natural alternatives to sustain a healthy microbial environment in aquaculture. These functional feed additives possess several beneficial characteristics, including gut microbiota modulation, immune response reinforcement, resistance to pathogenic organisms, improved growth performance, and enhanced feed utilization in aquatic animals. Nevertheless, their mechanisms in modulating the immune system and gut microbiota in aquatic animals are largely unclear. This review discusses basic and current research advancements to fill research gaps and promote effective and healthy aquaculture production.

Abstract
The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) is an important farming species in China and there is a high degree of overlap between the main crayfish production areas and areas contaminated with the heavy metal lead (Pb), thus putting crayfish farming at potential risk of Pb contamination. To assess the toxic effects of Pb on crayfish, in this study they were exposed to different concentrations of Pb (0, 0.1, 1, 10, 50 mg/L) for 72 h, and 0.1 mg/L represents the level of Pb in the contaminated water. Histomorphology and activities of antioxidant or immune-related enzymes suggest that the damage of Pb to the hepatopancreas and intestine was dose- and time-dependent, with the intestine being more sensitive to Pb than the hepatopancreas. Notably, after a short period (24 h) of stress at low concentrations (0.1 mg/L) of Pb, the malondialdehyde (MDA) content and antioxidant enzymes such as catalase (CAT) and glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in the intestine of crayfish showed significant changes, indicating that low concentrations of Pb were also highly detrimental to crayfish. High-throughput sequencing of the intestinal microbial community indicated that Pb exposure led to a disturbance in the relative abundance of intestinal bacteria, increasing the abundance of pathogenic bacteria (Bosea, Cloacibacterium, Legionella spp.) and decreasing the abundance of potentially beneficial bacteria (Chitinibacter, Chitinilyticum, Paracoccus, Microbacterium, Demequina, and Acinetobacter spp.). In conclusion, Pb damages the hepatopancreas and intestinal barrier of crayfish, leading to the destruction of their anti-stress ability and immune response, and at the same time disrupts the homeostasis of intestinal microbes, resulting in adverse effects on the gut. This study contributed to the assessment of the ecotoxicity of the heavy metal Pb to the crustacean aquatic animals.

Abstract
This study aimed to investigate the effect of Bacillus aryabhattai (LSG3-7) and Bacillus mojavensis (LSG3-8) on growth performance, antioxidant capacity, and immune response in Rhynchocypris lagowskii (Dybowski, 1869), at the trial and challenge periods. A 630 healthy fish (10.76 ± 0.05) were randomly divided into six groups: control group (D1) was fed the basal diet, D2 and D3 were supplemented with LSG 3-7 and LSG3-8 (1 × 108 CFU/g) for both of them, whereas D4 was supplemented with a mixture of both bacteria (0.5 × 108 CFU/g each), and D5 was supplemented with LSG3-7 0.75 × 108 CFU/g + LSG3-8 0.25 × 108 CFU/g, and D6 supplemented with LSG3-7 0.25 × 108 CFU/g + LSG3-8 0.75 × 108 CFU/g. After the trial, Aeromonas hydrophila was used in a challenge test for 14 days. Treatments showed significant differences (p < 0.05) in growth performance and antioxidant capacity (CAT, CuZn-SOD, GPX) in the liver and intestine compared to the control. The antioxidant-related genes CAT, CuZn-SOD, GPX, and Nrf2 in the liver and intestine showed upregulation compared with the control group. Serum IgM, LZM, C3, C4, and AKP showed a favorable superiority (p < 0.05) in treatments (D2 - D6) at the trial and challenge test compared to controls. In parallel, immune-related genes (IgM, NF-κB, TLR-1, TLR-2, and MyD88) showed an up-regulated level (p < 0.05) in treatments (D2 - D6) compared to the control. In addition, pro-inflammatory cytokines (IL-1, TNF-α) showed a downregulated level in treatments (D2 - D6). After the challenge test, the immune-related genes in the liver and muscle showed an up-regulated level in treatments compared to the controls. The survival rate showed a significant increase (p < 0.05) in the treatment groups (D2 - D6) compared to the control. Overall, individuals and the bacterial mixture of B. aryabhattai and B. mojavensis could improve the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immune capacity, and survival rate of R. lagowskii and prevent side effects of A. hydrophila. However, B. mojavensis showed a slight improvement compared to B. aryabhattai without a significant difference between them.

Abstract
Clostridium butyricum, a new probiotic in recent years, can produce butyric acid and short-chain fatty acids. It has the characteristics of strong acid and alkali resistance, high temperature resistance, and strong resistance to most antibiotics, and has more advantages than other probiotics. However, the action mechanism of C. butyricum on Eriocheir sinensis is still unclear and needs further study. In this study, when C. butyricum was added to the basic diet, the number of living bacteria was 0, 1 × 106 and 1 × 108 CFU/g, respectively. The E. sinensis were randomly divided into three groups: (blank control group, experimental group 1 (1 × 106 CFU/g) and experimental group 2 (1 × 108 CFU/g)). They were fed an experimental diet for 28 days. The effects of C. butyricum on E. sinensis were studied by detecting the differences in non-specific immune indexes, intestinal microflora, and metabolites between serum and hepatopancreas. The results showed that C. butyricum could improve the antioxidant ability of E. sinensis serum and hepatopancreas, protect intestinal tissues, and promote the absorption of nutrients. At the same time, it can enhance the microbial diversity and richness of the E. sinensis gut flora. LC-MS metabolomics was used to detect the metabolism of intestinal flora. It was found that C. butyricum could up-regulate lysophosphatidylcholine in the intestine. Through the KEGG enrichment pathway, it was found that significantly different metabolites were mainly concentrated in six metabolic pathways. The purine metabolism and alanine, aspartate, and glutamate metabolism pathways showed a downward trend, indicating that the addition of C. butyricum to feed could reduce purine metabolism, promote the water-salt balance of the organism's cells, and reduce inflammation. In this study, it was found that the addition of certain concentrations of C. butyricum to feed could improve the antioxidant ability of E. sinensis, improve the intestinal flora environment, and promote the growth of beneficial bacteria in the gut. This can promote the body's metabolism, which is more conducive to its growth.

Abstract
Chlorella vulgaris is one of the most commonly used microalgae in aquaculture feeds. It contains high concentrations of various kinds of nutritional elements that are involved in the physiological regulation of aquaculture animals. However, few studies have been conducted to illustrate their influence on the gut microbiota in fish. In this work, the gut microbiota of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) (average weight is 6.64 g) was analyzed by high-throughput sequencing of the 16S rRNA gene after feeding with 0.5% and 2% C. vulgaris additives in diets for 15 and 30 days (average water temperature was 26 °C). We found that the impact of C. vulgaris on the gut microbiota of Nile tilapia was feeding-time dependent. Only by feeding for 30 days (not 15 days) did the addition of 2% C. vulgaris to diets significantly elevate the alpha diversity (Chao1, Faith pd, Shannon, Simpson, and the number of observed species) of the gut microbiota. Similarly, C. vulgaris exerted a significant effect on the beta diversity (Bray-Curtis similarity) of the gut microbiota after feeding for 30 days (not 15 days). During the 15-day feeding trial, LEfSe analysis showed that Paracoccus, Thiobacillus, Dechloromonas, and Desulfococcus were enriched under 2% C. vulgaris treatment. During the 30-day feeding trial, Afipia, Ochrobactrum, Polymorphum, Albidovulum, Pseudacidovorax, and Thiolamprovum were more abundant in 2% C. vulgaris-treated fish. C. vulgaris promoted the interaction of gut microbiota in juvenile Nile tilapia by increasing the abundance of Reyranella. Moreover, during the feeding time of 15 days, the gut microbes interacted more closely than those during the feeding time of 30 days. This work will be valuable for understanding how C. vulgaris in diets impacts the gut microbiota in fish.

Abstract
As a catadromous fish, Asian sea bass (Lates calcarifer) juveniles migrate from seawater (SW) to freshwater (FW) for growth and development. During migration, they undergo physiological changes to acclimate to environmental salinity. Thus, it is crucial to understand how SW-to-FW migration affects the gut microbiota of catadromous fish. To the best of our knowledge, no study has revealed the effects of transfer to hypotonic environments on a catadromous fish microbiota. In this study, we aimed to determine the effects of FW transfer on the microbiota and cytokine gene expression in the intestines of juvenile catadromous Asian sea bass. The relationship between the water and the gut microbiota of this euryhaline species was also examined. We found that FW transfer affected both mucosa- and digesta-associated microbiota of Asian sea bass. Plesiomonas and Cetobacterium were dominant in both the mucosa- and digesta-associated microbiota of FW-acclimated sea bass. The pathogenic genera Vibrio, Staphylococcus, and Acinetobacter were dominant in the SW group. Although dominant fish microbes were present in the water, fish had their own unique microbes. Vitamin B6 metabolism was highly expressed in the FW fish microbiota, whereas arginine, proline, and lipid metabolism were highly expressed in the SW fish microbiota. Additionally, the correlation between cytokine gene expression and microbiota was found to be affected by FW transfer. Taken together, our results demonstrated that FW transfer altered the composition and functions of mucosa- and digesta-associated microbiota of catadromous Asian sea bass intestines, which correlated with cytokine gene expression.

Abstract
Benzophenone-3 (BP-3), 4-methyl-benzylidene camphor (4-MBC) and 2-ethyl-hexyl-4-trimethoxycinnamate (EHMC) are commonly used organic ultraviolet (UV) filters and are frequently detected in water environments. In the present study, we studied the potential adverse impacts of UV filter exposures in Ruditapes philippinarum by investigating transcriptomic profiles and non-specific immune enzyme activities. Transcriptome analysis showed that more genes were differentially regulated in EHMC-treated group, and down-regulated genes (2009) were significantly more than up-regulated ones (410) at day 7. Function annotation revealed that pathways "immune system", "cell growth and death" and "infectious diseases" were significantly enriched. Generally, combined qPCR and biochemical analyses demonstrated that short-term exposure to low dose of UV filters could activate immune responses, whereas the immune system would be restrained after prolonged exposure. Taken together, the present study firstly demonstrated the immunotoxicology induced by BP-3, 4-MBC and EHMC on R. philippinarum, indicating their potential threats to the survival of marine bivalves.

Abstract
Human milk contains abundant commensal bacteria that colonize and establish the infant's gut microbiome but the association between the milk microbiome and head circumference during infancy has not been explored. For this cross-sectional study, head-circumference-for-age-z-scores (HCAZ) of vaginally delivered breastfed infants were collected from 62 unrelated Mam-Mayan mothers living in eight remote rural communities in the Western Highlands of Guatemala during two stages of lactation, 'early' (6-46 days postpartum, n = 29) or 'late' (109-184 days postpartum, n = 33). At each stage of lactation, infants were divided into HCAZ ≥ -1 SD (early: n = 18; late: n = 14) and HCAZ < -1 SD (early: n = 11; late: n = 19). Milk microbiome communities were assessed using 16S ribosomal RNA gene sequencing and DESeq2 was used to compare the differential abundance (DA) of human milk microbiota with infant HCAZ subgroups at both stages of lactations. A total of 503 ESVs annotated 256 putative species across the 64 human milk samples. Alpha-diversity using Chao index uncovered a difference in microbial community richness between HCAZ ≥ -1 SD and HCAZ < -1 SD groups at late lactation (p = 0.045) but not at early lactation. In contrast, Canonical Analysis of Principal Coordinates identified significant differences between HCAZ ≥ -1 SD and HCAZ < -1 SD at both stages of lactation (p = 0.003); moreover, 26 milk microbial taxa differed in relative abundance (FDR < 0.05) between HCAZ ≥ -1 SD and HCAZ < -1 SD, with 13 differentially abundant at each lactation stage. Most species in the HCAZ ≥ -1 SD group were Streptococcus species from the Firmicutes phylum which are considered human colonizers associated with human milk whereas the HCAZ < -1 SD group at late lactation had more differentially abundant taxa associated with environmentally and 'potentially opportunistic' species belonging to the Actinobacteria genus. These findings suggest possible associations between brain growth of breastfed infants and the milk microbiome during lactation. Importantly, these data provide the first evidence of cross talk between the human milk microbiome and the infant brain that requires further investigation.

Abstract
The influence of dietary probiotic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, immune parameters and disease resistance of yellow catfish (Pelteobagrus fulvidraco) was evaluated. Commercial diet (C) or diet containing 106 cfu/g B. amyloliquefaciens (T) was fed for 4 weeks, and final weight (FW), specific growth rate (SGR) and feed conversion ratio (FCR) were improved (p<0.05) in the T group. Dietary B. amyloliquefaciens increased protease and amylase activities in the digestive tract after 2 and 4 weeks, respectively. Respiratory burst (RB), plasma lysozyme (LZM) activity, total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were also elevated (p<0.05). Immune-related genes signal transducer and activator of transcription 1 (STATA-1), immunoglobulin M (IgM) and C-type lectin (CTL) were upregulated (p<0.05), but interleukin-1 β (IL-1β) was not (p >0.05). Intestinal microbiota analysis showed that the community structure was significantly different between the two groups; the relative abundance of Cetobacterium was increased but Plesiomonas was decreased in T. Moreover, challenge tests showed that the resistance of fish fed B. amyloliquefaciens against Aeromonas veronii and Edwardsiella ictaluri was significantly enhanced (p<0.05). In conclusion, dietary supplementation of B. amyloliquefaciens can effectively improve the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, immune responses, intestinal microbiota composition and disease resistance of yellow catfish.

Abstract
Manganese (Mn) is an essential trace element for broiler chickens; its deficiency causes tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) characterized by lameness and growth retardation. Inorganic and organic manganese sources are used in global poultry production, but there is a lack of systematic investigations to compare the bioavailability among them. In this study, 120 1-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) broilers were randomly divided into four groups (n = 30), i.e., control group (Mn sulfate, 60 mg/kg), Mn-D group (Mn deficiency, 22 mg/kg), Mn-Gly group (Mn glycinate, 60 mg/kg), and Mn-Pro group (Mn proteinate, 60 mg/kg). During the 42-day experiment, growth performance, tibial bone parameters, pathological index changes, serum biochemical changes, and oxidative stress indicators were evaluated. These results not only suggested that Mn plays a crucial role in the normal development of tibia and the maintenance of redox homeostasis in broilers, but also proved that organic Mn supplementation, especially Mn proteinate, improved the tibia development and the absorption efficiency, as well as overall oxidative stress status of broilers, suggesting that it had greater bioavailability than inorganic Mn. Thus, application of organic Mn source may be an effective way to reduce economic losses and resolve animal welfare concerns due to TD in commercial poultry farming.

Abstract
Clostridium butyricum (CB) is a gram-positive bacterium that secretes short-chain fatty acids such as butyric acid and so on. An 8-week feeding trial was conducted to investigate the effects of CB on the growth performance, antioxidant capacity, immunity and resistance to Vibrio parahaemolyticus in Litopenaeus Vannamei fed with cottonseed protein concentrate (CPC) replacement of fishmeal. Six iso-nitrogenous (40%) and iso-lipidic (6%) diets were formulated including a positive control group (PC, 25% fishmeal), a negative control group (NC, CPC replaced 30% of fishmeal protein), and 0.03% (C1, 3 × 108 CFU/kg), 0.12% (C2, 1.2 × 109 CFU/kg), 0.48% (C3, 4.8 × 109 CFU/kg) and 1.92% (C4, 1.92 × 1010 CFU/kg) CB were supplemented on the negative control group (NC). After the feeding trial, the remaining shrimp in each treatment group were subjected to a challenge experiment with Vibrio parahaemolyticus. The results indicated that weight gain rate (WGR), specific growth rate (SGR) in C4 group were significantly lower than those in PC and C2 groups (P < 0.05); the feed conversion ratio (FCR) was significantly higher than that of PC and C2 groups (P < 0.05). There was no significant difference in survival rate (SR) among all groups (P > 0.05). Compared to the PC and NC groups, the total superoxide capacity, superoxide dismutase and lysozyme were significantly higher in the C4 group (P < 0.05); the glutathione peroxidase, acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase were significantly higher in the C3 group (P < 0.05); and the malondialdehyde was significantly lower in the C4 group (P < 0.05). The relative mRNA expressions of Toll receptor (TLR), innate immune deficiency gene (IMD), penaiedin3a (Pen3) were significantly down-regulated in the NC group than those in the PC group (P < 0.05). In addition, the relative mRNA expressions of TLR, IMD and Pen3 were significantly up-regulated in all groups supplemented with CB than those in the NC group (P < 0.05). Moreover, the cumulative mortality rate in the NC group was not significantly different from the PC group (P > 0.05) and was significantly higher than those in the C3 and C4 groups (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the CB supplementation on the basis of CPC replacement of 30% fishmeal protein enhanced significantly the antioxidant capacity, immunity and disease resistance of shrimp and improved its growth performance. Therefore, considering the factors of the growth, immunity and disease resistance, the CB supplementation of 0.12%-0.48% (1.2 × 109 CFU/kg-4.8 × 109 CFU/kg) was recommended in the diet of L. vannamei based on the results of this experiment.

The purpose of this experiment was to assess the effect of B. subtilis D1-2 at different concentrations (C: 0 CFU/g, BL: 105 CFU/g, BM: 107 CFU/g and BH: 109 CFU/g) on the growth performance, digestive enzyme activity, immune ability and intestinal flora of A. japonicus. After the 56-day feeding trial, the final body weight and weight gain rate of juvenile sea cucumber A. japonicus fed B. subtilis D1-2 were significantly increased, especially in the BM group. Additionally, the lipase activity of the intestine was significantly increased in the BM and BH groups. Enhanced immunity was also found in sea cucumbers supplemented with B. subtilis D1-2. Alpha diversity indices showed that the B. subtilis D1-2-supplemented groups had higher intestinal microbial richness and diversity than the control group. The beta diversity analysis indicated that the bacterial communities in the B. subtilis D1-2-supplemented groups were quite similar but different from the bacterial communities in the control group. Dietary supplementation with B. subtilis D1-2 increased the relative abundance of some potential probiotic-related genera, including Lactobacillus, Clostridium, Lactococcus, Bifidobacterium and Streptococcus. In conclusion, dietary addition of B. subtilis D1-2 could effectively promote the growth of A. japonicus, improve its digestion and immunity capacity to a certain extent, and actively regulate the intestinal microflora of A. japonicus.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the molecular mechanism of enhancing the immune effect of the Newcastle disease virus (NDV) vaccine in broilers fed with Bacillus cereus PAS38. The results showed that the NDV antibody titer of broilers in the treatment group supplemented with B. cereus PAS38 was higher than that of the control group, and the difference was significant at 28 days of age (P < 0.05). The spleen, thymus and bursa of fabricius of 42-day-old broilers were quickly collected to construct a differentially expressed gene library of suppression subtractive hybridization (SSH). A total of 31 immune-related differentially expressed genes were screened from three immune organs, of which 15 were up-regulated and 16 were down-regulated. After silencing the up-regulated genes MIF, CD74, DOCK2 and KLHL6, the expression levels of cytokines (Akirin2, NF-κB, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IFN-γ and TNF-α) in lymphocytes were reduced to varying degrees. B. cereus PAS38 might be involved in the proliferation, differentiation, activation, migration of B lymphocytes and vaccine antigen presentation by up-regulating the expression of MIF, CD74, DOCK2, KLHL6 and other genes. Moreover, it also stimulated plasma cells to produce immunoglobulins and specific antibodies, thereby improving the humoral immune function of broilers and enhancing the immune effect of the NDV vaccine.

Abstract
Whey, the main by-product obtained from the manufacture of cheese, which contains a very high organic load (mainly due to the lactose content), is not easily degradable and creates concern over environmental issues. Hydrolysis of lactose present in whey and conversion of whey lactose into valuable products such as bioethanol, sweet syrup, and animal feed offers the possibility of whey bioremediation. The increasing need for bioremediation in the dairy industry has compelled researchers to search for a novel source of β-galactosidase with diverse properties. In the present study, the bacterium Paracoccus marcusii KGP producing β-galactosidase was subjected to morphological, biochemical, and probiotic characterisation. The bacterial isolate was found to be non-pathogenic and resistant to low pH (3 and 4), bile salts (0.2%), salt (10%), pepsin (at pH 3), and pancreatin (at pH 8). Further characterisation revealed that the bacteria have a good auto-aggregation ability (40% at 24 h), higher hydrophobicity (chloroform-60%, xylene-50%, and ethyl acetate-40%) and a broad spectrum of antibiotic susceptibility. The highest growth of P. marcusii KGP was achieved at pH 7 and 28 °C, and the yeast extract, galactose, and MgSO4 were the best for the growth of the bacterial cells. The bacterium KGP was able to utilise whey as a substrate for its growth with good β-galactosidase production potential. Furthermore, the β-galactosidase extracted from the isolate KGP could hydrolyse 47% whey lactose efficiently at 50 °C. The study thus reveals the potential application of β-galactosidase from P. marcusii KGP in whey bioremediation.

Abstract
Microplastics (MPs) in the form of microfibres (MFs) are of great concern because of their size and increasing abundance, which increase their potential to interact with or be ingested by aquatic organisms. Although MFs are the dominant shape of MPs ingested by sea cucumbers in habitats, their effect on sea cucumbers remains unclear. This study examined the effect of dietary exposure to MFs on the growth and physiological status of both juvenile and adult Apostichopus japonicus sea cucumbers. MFs were mixed into the diet of sea cucumbers for 60 d at environmentally relevant concentrations of 0.6 MFs g-1, 1.2 MFs g-1 and 10 MFs g-1. Dietary exposure to MFs, with concentrations at or above those commonly found in the habitats, did not significantly affect the growth and faecal production rate of either juvenile or adult sea cucumbers. However, a disruption in immunity indices (acid phosphatase and alkaline phosphatase activity) and oxidative stress indices (total antioxidant capacity and malondialdehyde content) was observed in juvenile and adult sea cucumbers, indicating that these indices might be useful as potential biomarkers of the exposure to MF ingestion in sea cucumbers. This study provides insights into the toxicity mechanism of MF ingestion in a commercially and ecologically important species.

Abstract
Sea cucumbers possess the remarkable capacity to regenerate their body parts or organs. Regeneration of host organs and/or body parts involves reconstruction of the host associated microbiota, however, the dynamics and contribution of microbiota to the regeneration process are largely unknown due to a lack of experimental models. To track the dynamics of individual gut microbiomes during gut regeneration, both caged mariculture and laboratory isolator systems of sea cucumbers (Apostichopus japonicus) were developed and longitudinal meta16S analyses were performed. Under natural environmental conditions in the caged mariculture system, both bacterial and eukaryotic communities in sea cucumbers' guts appeared to be reconstructed within 4 months after evisceration. Using the laboratory isolator, which can trace daily dynamics, we found that fecal microbiota collected before evisceration were clearly different from those collected after evisceration. We also identified eight key bacteria, belonging to Alteromonadaceae, Rhodobacteraceae, Oceanospirillaceae and family-unassigned Gammaproteobacteria, suggesting that these bacteria might interact with the host during the gut regeneration process. Six of the eight key bacteria were isolated for further bioassay using the isolator developed in this study to test whether these isolates affect gut regeneration.

Abstract
Tetramethyl thiuram disulfide (thiram) is widely used in agricultural production as an insecticide and fungicide, which can also lead to tibial dyschondroplasia (TD) in poultry. TD is characterized by leg disorders and growth performance retardation, and no targeted drugs have been found to treat TD until now. Therefore, the objective of the present study was to explore the ameliorative effect of traditional Chinese medicine naringin on thiram-induced TD chickens. A total of 180 one-day-old Arbor Acres (AA) broiler chickens were randomly divided into three equal groups (n = 60): control group (standard diet), thiram-induced group (thiram 50 mg/kg from day 3 to day 7), and naringin-treated group (naringin 30 mg/kg from day 8 to day 18). During the 18-day experiment, the growth performance, tibial bone parameters, antioxidant property of liver, serum biochemical changes and clinical symptoms were recorded to evaluate the protective effect of naringin in thiram-induced TD broiler chickens. Additionally, mRNA expressions and protein levels of Ihh and PTHrP genes were determined via quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and western blot. Administration of naringin showed significant results by alleviating lameness, increased growth performance, recuperated growth plate (GP) width, and improved functions and antioxidant enzyme level of liver in broilers affected by TD. Moreover, naringin treatment restored the development of damaged tibia bone via downregulating Ihh and upregulating PTHrP mRNA and protein expressions. In conclusion, our study determines naringin could be used as an effective medicine to treat TD.

Abstract
To study the effects of Bacillus lincheniformis feeding frequency on the survival and growth of Haliotis discus hannai abalone, we measured the expression levels of nonspecific immune genes and monitored the anti-Vibrio parahaemolyticus immune reaction. H. discus hannai (shell length: 32.75 ± 2.63 mm, body weight: 4.91 ± 0.34 g) was selected to perform a 70 d laboratory culture experiment including a 14 d V. parahaemolyticus artificial infection experiment. The control group (C) was fed normal commercial feed every day. The M1 experimental group was given experimental feed and basal feed on alternating days until the end of the experiment. The M2 experimental group was given experimental feed for 4 d and basal feed for 3 d, and this cycle was repeated every 7 d until the end of the experiment. The M3 experimental group was given experimental feed for 2 d and basal feed for 5 d, and this cycle was repeated every 7 d until the end of the experiment. The M4 group was continuously given experimental feed for the duration of the experiment. The concentration of added B. lincheniformis in each experimental group was 105 cfu/g (according to the quantity of viable bacteria). The specific growth rate (as measured by body weight) and the feed conversion efficiency of the abalone in M1 and M2 were significantly higher than those in M4 and C (P < 0.05). The cellulose and lipase activities of abalone in M1, M2 or M4 were significantly higher than those in M3 or C (P < 0.05). The acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, total haemocyte counts, O2- levels generated by respiratory bursts, and the expression levels of Mn-SOD, TPx, GSTs and GSTm in abalone in the M2 group were significantly higher than those in any other feeding frequency group (P < 0.05). At the end of the V. parahaemolyticus infection, the cumulative mortality of the abalone in M2 was significantly lower than that in any other group (P < 0.05). Consequently, given the growth advantages and the enhancement of immune function, the feeding plan in which B. lincheniformis was applied for 4 d per week, and basal feed was then applied for 3 d, did not lead to a high level of immune reaction, immune fatigue or waste of resources, but increased the growth rate of individuals and their resistance to V. parahaemolyticus infection.

Abstract
The bacterial strain KU011TH was isolated from the skin mucus of healthy bighead catfish. The strain is a Gram-negative coccobacillus that is nonmotile, aerobic, catalase positive, oxidase negative, and nonhemolytic. Sequence analyses of the housekeeping genes 16S rRNA, gyrB and rpoB indicate that this strain is a new member of the Acb complex of the genus Acinetobacter and is closely related to Acinetobacter pittii and Acinetobacter lactucae. In addition, the genome relatedness-associated ANIb (<95–96%) and in silico DDH (<70%) values clearly supported the new member of the genus Acinetobacter and the Acb complex. The genome of the strain KU011TH was approximately 3.79 Mbp in size, comprising 3619 predicted genes, and the DNA G+C content was 38.56 mol%. The major cellular fatty acids were C18:1ω9c, C16:0, C16:1, C20:2, C18:2ω6c and C18:1ω9t. The whole-genome sequences and phenotypic, phylogenetic, and chemotaxonomic data clearly support the classification of the strain KU011TH as a new member in the genus Acinetobacter which is closest to A. pittii. Additionally, the new bacterial strain exhibited strong activity against a broad range of freshwater fish pathogens in vitro.

Abstract
The effects of a diet containing the probiotic Bacillus amyloliquefaciens on the survival and growth of Haliotis discus hannai were evaluated by measuring growth and hematological parameters and the expression levels of nonspecific immune genes. In addition, the abalone's response to Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection was assessed. H. discus hannai (shell length: 29.35 ± 1.81 mm, body weight: 4.28 ± 0.23 g) were exposed to an 8-week culture experiment in indoor aquariums and a 2-week V. parahaemolyticus artificial infection experiment. In each experiment, the control group (C) was fed daily with the basal feed; the experimental groups were fed daily with the experimental feed, prepared by spraying B. amyloliquefaciens onto the basal feed at final concentrations of 103 (group A1), 105 (A2), and 107 (A3) cfu/g. The survival rate, body weight specific growth rate, and food conversion efficiency in A2 and A3 were significantly higher than those in A1 and C (P < 0.05). The total number of blood lymphocytes, the O2- and NO levels produced from respiratory burst, the activities of acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, and the expression levels of catalase and thiol peroxidase in A2 were not significantly different from those in A3, but these factors were significantly higher in A2 compared to A1 and C (P < 0.05). The total antioxidant capacity and expression levels of glutathione S-transferase in A1, A2 and A3 were significantly higher than those in C (P < 0.05). At day 9 after infection with V. parahaemolyticus, all abalone in C were dead; at the end of the experiment, the cumulative mortality of abalone in A2 was significantly lower than that in any other group (P < 0.05). Thus, the experimental feed containing 105 cfu/g B. amyloliquefaciens not only facilitated the food intake and growth of abalone, but also effectively enhanced their non-specific immunity and resistance to V. parahaemolyticus infection. In this regard, B. amyloliquefaciens may be a useful probiotic strain for abalone aquaculture.

Abstract
In the present study, we reported 18 LAB strains isolated from the intestinal contents of Cyprinus carpio, and their probiotic properties both in vitro and in vivo. The results showed that 9 of them had higher in vitro immunomodulatory properties, effectively survived under acidic (pH 2.5) and bile salt (ranging from 0.1% to 0.5%) conditions, and inhibited the growth of 4 pathogens. Among them, Lactococcus lactis Q-8, Lactococcus lactis Q-9, and Lactococcus lactis Z-2 showed the strongest adhesion abilities and inhibition of pathogen adhesion to mucin. When the fish consumed diets containing these 3 strains (5 × 108 CFU/g) for 8 weeks, the weight gain (WG) and specific growth rate (SGR) had significantly (P < 0.05) increased, especially with L. lactis Q-8, which had a WG of 231.45%, and SGR of 2.22%. Survival rate in each LAB supplementation group was also significantly higher than that in control group during the feeding period (P < 0.05). For the cytokines expression levels in serum, different expression patterns were also observed. Before the infection with Aeromonas hydrophila, L. lactis supplementation significant up-regulated protein levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-12) compared with negative (CK1) group, while these cytokines were significantly lower than those in positive (CK2) group after infection. However, whether infected or not, the expression of anti-inflammatory cytokines (IL-10, TGF-β) were significantly increased in L. lactis Q-8, L. lactis Q-9, and L. lactis Z-2 treatment groups. In conclusion, these 3 L. lactis strains screened from common carp were effective in improving growth, innate immunity and disease resistance. Based on the physiological characteristics in our study, they might be used as potential probiotics in aquaculture.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Yaks living in the high-altitude hypoxic environment of Tibetan plateau (3600 m) have special gut microbes. However, it is still little research on yak probiotics until now. Therefore, the purpose of our study was to evaluate the growth promoting effect, antioxidant capability, immune effect, and anti-inflammatory ability of Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus velezensis isolated from Tibetan yaks in mice model. RESULTS The results showed that the isolated strains supplementation not only improve the growth performance but also increased the length of villus in the small intestine and intestinal digestive enzyme activity. Importantly, we observed that the T-AOC, SOD, and GSH-PX levels were increased and the MDA content was reduced in probiotic-treated mice, which implied that probiotics supplementation can ameliorate the antioxidative activity of mice. The levels of AST and ALT correlated with the hepatic injury were reduced and the levels of AKP, TP, GLB, ALB, Ca, and P were markedly higher than those in the control group. Additionally, mice treated with probiotics exhibited higher serum IgG, IgM and IgA, which can reflect the immune status to some extent. At the same time, the major pro-inflammatory factor TNF-α, IL-6, and IL-8 were down-regulated and the anti-inflammatory factor IL-10 was up-regulated compared with the control groups. CONCLUSIONS In conclusion, these results demonstrated that Bacillus subtilis and Bacillus velezensis supplementation can increase overall growth performance and ameliorate the blood parameters related to inflammation and immunity of mice.

Abstract
Cadmium (Cd) is the most common heavy metal and is easily detected in aquatic environments worldwide. The genus Bacillus was one of dominant probiotics, which was commonly used in aquaculture. The present study was undertaken to explore the effects of Bacillus cereus (B. cereus) supplementation on hematological parameters and the immune response of Carassius auratus gibelio (C. gibelio) following Cd exposure. Fish were exposed to waterborne Cd (0, 1 and 2 mg/L) and/or treated with dietary B. cereus at 108 cfu/g for four weeks. The hematological disturbances observed after exposure of waterborne Cd included significant decreases in red blood cell (RBC) count, hemoglobin (Hb) concentration and hematocrit (HCT). While significant elevation (P < 0.05) of RBC count, HCT and Hb levels in the 1 and 2 mg/L Cd-B. cereus administration group at 4 weeks, compared with the Cd-only group. Among serum enzymatic activities, aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and alanine transaminase (ALT) activities by Cd exposure were significantly higher than controls, but this increase was effectively inhibited in Cd-B. cereus administration groups. In the Cd-B. cereus administration group, significant down-regulation of Hsp70, Hsp90, IL-1β, IL-6, IL-10 and TNF-α in conjunction with the up-regulation of IgM and LZM in the spleen indicated that B. cereus alleviated the Cd-induced damage to the immune system to some degree. The results of this study suggested that B. cereus has the potential to countermeasure Cd-induced hematological disturbances and immunosuppression in C. gibelio.

Abstract
China is the largest aquaculture producer in the world. Antibiotics were extensively used to ensure the development of the intensive aquaculture; however, the use of antibiotics causes safety- and environment-associated problems. As an alternative strategy to antibiotics, aquatic probiotics have attracted attention. The microbial organisms used as probiotics or tested as potential probiotics in Chinese aquaculture belong to various taxonomic divisions, including Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, Firmicutes, Proteobacteria and yeast. Moreover, the mixture of probiotic strains and synbiotics are also widely used. Studies on the mode of action of aquatic probiotics have extended our understanding of the probiotic effects, and novel mechanisms have been discovered, such as interference of quorum sensing. However, use of probiotics in Chinese aquaculture is still at an initial stage, and there are potential risks for some probiotic applications in aquaculture. Further regulation and management are required to normalize the production and usage of aquatic probiotics. In this review, we discuss species, effects, and mode of actions of probiotics in Chinese aquaculture since 2008. Challenges and future directions for research are also discussed.

Abstract
Lead (Pb) poisoning in humans and fish represents a significant global problem. Bacillus subtilis (B. subtilis) is a widely used probiotic in aquaculture. Carassius auratus gibelio (C. gibelio) is one of the most important aquaculture species with great commercial value. The objective of this study was to evaluate the potential of B. subtilis in ameliorating lead-induced toxicity in C. gibelio. The fish were exposed for 60 days to waterborne Pb at 0, 0.05, 0.5 and 1 mg/L and/or dietary B. subtilis at 109 cfu/g. After 30 and 60 days, the fish were sampled and bioaccumulation, antioxidant activity and immune responses were assessed. The results revealed that B. subtilis confers significant protective effects against lead toxicity by preventing alterations in the levels of bioaccumulation, superoxide dismutase, catalase and glutathione. B. subtilis also assists in the recovery of blood δ-aminolevulinic acid dehydratase, lysozyme, and IgM levels while regulating the expression of immune-related genes including IL-10, lysozyme, TNF-α, IgM and Hsp70 after 60 days of lead exposure. Our results suggest that administration of B. subtilis (109 cfu/g) has the potential to combat lead toxicity in C. gibelio.

Abstract
To study the effects of probiotic-added food on the survival and growth of abalone (Haliotis discus hannai Ino), the expression levels of nonspecific immune genes and the anti-Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection were examined. During an 8-week culturing experiment in an indoor aquarium and a 2-week V. parahaemolyticus artificial infection experiment, the control group was fed with untreated food once a day, while the experimental groups (L1, L2 and L3) were fed with Lactobacillus pentosus added food. The concentration of probiotics in the experimental food was 103 cfu/g (L1), 105 cfu/g (L2) and 107 cfu/g (L3), respectively. The results showed that the survival rate, shell length-specific growth rate, and the food conversion rate (FCR) of abalones in L1 and L2 were significantly higher than the control group. The food intake of abalones in L3 was significantly lower than that in L1, L2 and the control group, but there was no significant difference in FCR identified between L1, L2 and L3. In the L. pentosus-added groups, the total number of blood lymphocytes, lysozyme activity, acid phosphatase, superoxide dismutase, and expression levels of Mn-superoxide dismutase (Mn-SOD) and thioredoxin peroxidase (TPx) were significantly higher than the control group, while the malondialdehyde (MDA) content was significantly lower than the control group. The phagocytic activity of blood lymphocytes, catalase activity and the expression levels of heat shock protein 70 (HSP70) of abalones in the control group were significantly lower than that in L1 and L2, but there was no significant difference when compared with L3. The levels of O2-, NO produced by respiratory burst of blood lymphocytes and the expression levels of catalase (CAT) in L1 and L2 were significantly higher than both L3 and the control group. Seven days after infection with V. parahaemolyticus, all abalones in the control group were dead. After 14 days the cumulative mortality rate of abalones in the L. pentosus-added groups was significantly lower than that in the control group. Therefore, the 103 cfu/g and 105 cfu/g L. pentosus-added food not only promoted food intake and growth of abalones, but also improved their non-specific immunity and reduced V. parahaemolyticus infection, indicating that this strain is a good potential candidate for probiotic added food in the aquaculture industry.

Abstract
To study the effects of a probiotic (Bacillus lincheniformis) on the survival and growth of Haliotis discus hannai Ino, the expression levels of nonspecific immune genes and the resistance to Vibrio parahaemolyticus infection were assessed. Abalones (shell length: 27.64 ± 1.59 mm, body weight: 4.17 ± 0.32 g) were selected for use in an 8-week culture experiment and a 2-week V. parahaemolyticus artificial infection experiment. In both experiments, the control group (C) was fed with a basal feed and the experimental groups were fed with experimental food prepared by spraying the probiotic on the basal feed at different concentrations: 103 (B1), 105 (B2), and 107 (B3) cfu/mL. The survival rate, total number of blood lymphocytes, activity of acid phosphatase, and expression level of heat shock protein 70 were significantly higher in B1, B2, and B3 than in C (P < 0.05). The specific growth rate of shell length, food intake, food conversion rate, phagocytic activity of blood lymphocytes, activities of myeloperoxidase and catalase (CAT), and expression levels of CAT and thioredoxin peroxidase of abalones in B2 were significantly higher than those in B1 and C (P < 0.05). Although the level of O2- produced by the respiratory burst of blood lymphocytes in B2 was not significantly different from those in B1 and B3, they were significantly higher than that in C (P < 0.05). The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD), the nitric oxide levels produced by the respiratory burst of blood lymphocytes, and the expression levels of Mn-SOD in B1 and B3 were significantly higher than those in C but significantly lower than those in B2 (P < 0.05). Fourteen days after infection with V. parahaemolyticus, the cumulative mortality of abalones in B2 was significantly lower than those in B1 and C (P < 0.05). These results indicate that the food containing 105 cfu/mL Bacillus licheniformis promoted food intake and growth of abalones and also improved their resistance to V. parahaemolyticus infection. Thus, B. licheniformis is a good potential probiotic.

Abstract
A feeding experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of four strains of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) [i.e. Lactobacillus plantarum LL11 (LP), Weissella confuse LS13 (WC), Lactococcus lactis LH8 (LL) and Enterococcus faecalis LC3 (ES)] isolated from marine fish on growth, immune response and expression levels of immune-related gens in body wall of juvenile sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus. As a result, sea cucumber had better growth performance fed supplementation of LP and ES than the control group (P < .05). Survival rate in each LAB supplementation group was significantly higher than that in control group after Vibrio splendidus challenge (P < .05). In regards to the enzyme activities, LP supplementation significantly imporved the enzyme activities of alkaline phosphatase (AKP) (P < .05), acid phosphatase (ACP) and superoxide dismutase (SOD), ES supplementation significantly imporved AKP activity (P < .05), and WC supplementation significantly imporved ACP activity (P < .05). However, lysozyme (LSZ) activity was not significantly changed in the four LAB supplementation treatments (P > .05). For the gene expression levels, different expression patterns were observed among four groups, heat shock proteins (HSP60, HSP70 and HSP90) and caspase-2 showed dramatic up-regulation at 30 d while NF-kappa-B transcription factor p65 was down-regulated at 15 d and up-regulated at 30 d, and nitric oxide synthase was down-regulated at both timepoints in almost all the four groups. In conclusion, the four LAB strains screened from marine fish supplemented in diets indicated positive effects on immune response for A. japonicus, especially, the L. plantarum LL11 and E. faecalis LC3 indicated better growth performance.

Abstract
Animal gut harbors diverse microbes that play crucial roles in the nutrition uptake, metabolism, and the regulation of host immune responses. The intestinal microbiota homeostasis is critical for health but poorly understood. Probiotics Paracoccus marcusii DB11 and Bacillus cereus G19, and antibiotics florfenicol did not significantly impact species richness and the diversity of intestinal microbiota of sea cucumber, in comparison with those in the control group by high-throughput sequencing. Molecular ecological network analysis indicated that P. marcusii DB11 supplementation may lead to sub-module integration and the formation of a large, new sub-module, and enhance species-species interactions and connecter and module hub numbers. B. cereus G19 supplementation decreased sub-module numbers, and increased the number of species-species interactions and module hubs. Sea cucumber treated with florfenicol were shown to have only one connecter and the lowest number of operational taxonomic units (OTUs) and species-species interactions within the ecological network. These results suggested that P. marcusii DB11 or B. cereus G19 may promote intestinal microbiota homeostasis by improving modularity, enhancing species-species interactions and increasing the number of connecters and/or module hubs within the network. In contrast, the use of florfenicol can lead to homeostatic collapse through the deterioration of the ecological network.

Abstract
The concerted activity of intestinal microbes is crucial to the health and development of their host organisms. Investigation of microbial interactions in the gut should deepen our understanding of how these micro-ecosystems function. Due to advances in Next Generation Sequencing (NGS) technologies, various bioinformatic strategies have been proposed to investigate these microbial interactions. However, due to the complexity of the intestinal microbial community and difficulties in monitoring their interactions, at present there is a gap between the theory and biological application. In order to construct and validate microbial relationships, we first induce a community shift from simple to complex by manipulating artificial hibernation (AH) in the treefrog Polypedates megacephalus. To monitor community growth and microbial interactions, we further performed a time-course screen using a 16S rRNA amplicon approach and a Lotka-Volterra model. Lotka-Volterra models, also known as predator–prey equations, predict the dynamics of microbial communities and how communities are structured and sustained. An interaction network of gut microbiota at the genus level in the treefrog was constructed using Metagenomic Microbial Interaction Simulator (MetaMIS) package. The interaction network obtained had 1,568 commensal, 1,737 amensal, 3,777 mutual, and 3,232 competitive relationships, e.g., Lactococcus garvieae has a commensal relationship with Corynebacterium variabile. To validate the interacting relationships, the gut microbe composition was analyzed after probiotic trials using single strain (L. garvieae, C. variabile, and Bacillus coagulans, respectively) and a combination of L. garvieae, C. variabile, and B. coagulans, because of the cooperative relationship among their respective genera identified in the interaction network. After a 2 week trial, we found via 16S rRNA amplicon analysis that the combination of cooperative microbes yielded significantly higher probiotic concentrations than single strains, and the immune response (interleukin-10 expression) also significantly changed in a manner consistent with improved probiotic effects. By taking advantage of microbial community shift from simple to complex, we thus constructed a reliable microbial interaction network, and validated it using probiotic strains as a test system.

Abstract
A 45-day feeding trial followed by an acute stress test of low salinity was done to evaluate effects of Lactobacillus plantarum on growth performance and anti-stress capability of white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). Shrimp were randomly allocated in 15 tanks (100 shrimp per tank) and divided into 5 treatments with 3 replicates. Triplicate tanks were fed with a control diet or diets containing different treatments of L. plantarum (fermentation supernatant (FS), live bacteria (LB), dead bacteria (DB) and cell-free extract (CE) of L. plantarum) as treatment groups. Growth performance including weight gain (WGR), feed conversion ratio (FCR) and specific growth rate (SGR) were determined after feeding 45 days. Anti-stress capacity was evaluated by determining the gene expression of ProPO, SOD and Lys in gut of shrimp at the end of feeding trial and again at 96 h post-stress test. Results indicated that supplementation of L. plantarum into diet had significantly improved growth performance of L. vannamei. On the other hand, L. plantarum supplementation had no significant effects on the gene expression of SOD and Lys in gut of shrimp cultured under normal condition for 45 days. Supplementation of L. plantarum had increased survivability of L. vannamei having higher survival rates compared to the control group. However, statistical analysis showed no significant difference between the control group and treatments. Compared with the control group, supplementation of L. plantarum significantly improved the resistance of L. vannamei against the stress of acute low salinity, as indicated by higher survival rate as well as higher transcript levels of ProPo, SOD and Lys gene. Our findings suggested that L. plantarum, especially cell-free extract of L. plantarum has improved the anti-stress capacity of L. vannamei and could serve as a potential feed additive that helps shrimp to overcome environmental stresses.

Abstract
The probiotic properties of Bacillus subtilis HAINUP40 isolated from the aquatic environment, and the effects of dietary administration of B. subtilis HAINUP40 on the growth performance, intestinal probiotic recovery, digestive enzyme activities, innate immunity and disease resistance of tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) were evaluated. The probiotic properties investigated include tolerance to simulated gastrointestinal stress, auto-aggregation, cell surface hydrophobicity and extracellular enzyme production. The cell number of B. subtilis changed little after 4 h in simulated gastric fluid at pH = 2.0, 3.0, 4.0 and simulated intestinal fluid at pH = 6.8.B.subtilis HAINUP40 revealed strong auto-aggregation property (34.6-87.0%) after 24 h incubation period. It exhibited significant cell surface hydrophobicity in xylene (28.8%) and chloroform (41.3%) and produced extracellular proteases and amylase. After tilapia (mean weight = 95 ± 8 g) were fed with a diet containing 108 cfu/g B. subtilis HAINUP40, their final body weight, percent weight gain (PWG), specific growth rate (SGR), total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) and serum superoxide dismutase (SOD) increased significantly (p < 0.05) after 8 weeks; feed conversion rate (FCR) is significantly lower (p < 0.05) after 8 weeks; the protease and amylase activity in the digestive tract increased significantly (p < 0.05) after 4 and 8 weeks; and respiratory bursts and serum lysozyme activity increased significantly (p < 0.05) after 2 weeks. Moreover, being challenged with pathogenic Streptococcus agalactiae for 2 weeks, the relative percent survival (RPS%) is 52.94%. The results of this study strongly suggest that dietary supplement of B. subtilis HAINUP40 can effectively enhances the growth performance, immune response, and disease resistance of Nile tilapia.

Abstract
To understand the physiological response of sea cucumber, Apostichopus japonicas, were exposed to different concentration of benzo[a]pyrene (B[a]P), and the growth, survival, antioxidant enzyme (SOD and T-AOC) activities were tested. Meanwhile, the quantitative real-time PCR technology was utilized to quantize the expression of immune related genes (i.e. innate immune genes, HSP genes and anti-oxidative genes). In our result, the SOD activity and T-AOC activity were induced at lower level of B[a]P (0.03 μg/L), however, a reduction of SOD activity and T-AOC activity were observed at relatively high B[a]P concentration (3 and 9 μg/L) for A. japonicas. Furthermore, the distinct expression patterns of selected immune-related genes were detected among different concentrations, and a general trend of down-regulation was observed at higher concentration. Especially, lysozyme almost showed the highest down-regulation at all concentrations, followed by NOS. Collectively, the growth, survival and expression signatures of immune related genes reflected an overall suppression of innate immunity in sea cucumber following exposure. Future functional studies should be carried out to characterize the detailed roles of immune genes and their related responses under B[a]P toxicity. Additionally, better understanding of the molecular indicators governing the healthy status under environmental toxicity would facilitate a healthy and sustainable culture program.

Abstract
Background There is increasing interest in the microbiome of the hepatobiliary system. This study investigated the influence of infection with the fish-borne liver fluke, Opisthorchis felineus on the biliary microbiome of residents of the Tomsk region of western Siberia. Methodology/Principal Findings Samples of bile were provided by 56 study participants, half of who were infected with O. felineus, and all of who were diagnosed with gallstone disease. The microbiota of the bile was investigated using high throughput, Illumina-based sequencing targeting the prokaryotic 16S rRNA gene. About 2,797, discrete phylotypes of prokaryotes were detected. At the level of phylum, bile from participants with opisthorchiasis showed greater numbers of Synergistetes, Spirochaetes, Planctomycetes, TM7 and Verrucomicrobia. Numbers of > 20 phylotypes differed in bile of the O. felineus-infected compared to non-infected participants, including presence of species of the genera Mycoplana, Cellulosimicrobium, Microlunatus and Phycicoccus, and the Archaeans genus, Halogeometricum, and increased numbers of Selenomonas, Bacteroides, Rothia, Leptotrichia, Lactobacillus, Treponema and Klebsiella. Conclusions/Significance Overall, infection with the liver fluke O. felineus modified the biliary microbiome, increasing abundance of bacterial and archaeal phylotypes. The microbiota of the alimentary tract and other sites of the body influences human health. Contrary to popular belief, the bile within the liver is not sterile, and may host a microbiome consisting of diverse species of microbes. The spectrum of microbial species and their numbers within the biliary system may be influenced by disease including infection with pathogens such as parasitic worms and with gallstone disease, liver cancer and other ailments. Here we examined the microbes in the bile of patients from western Siberia, Russia who were concurrently infected with a food-borne parasitic worm, the liver fluke Opisthorchis felineus. Infection with this liver fluke is common in western Siberia, as a consequence of dietary preference for undercooked or smoked fresh-water fishes that often carry the larva of the liver fluke. Using high throughput sequencing targeting a conserved bacterial gene and statistical analyses, numerous bacterial species were identified in the bile of the patients. Infection with the liver fluke modified the biliary microbiome, resulting in abundant and diverse species of bacteria and Archaea.

Abstract
TNF receptor associated factors (TRAFs) are a family of proteins primarily involved in both adaptive and innate immunity. In this study, we identified a novel TRAF3 gene in Apostichopus japonicus by transcriptome sequencing and RACE approaches (designated as AjTRAF3). The full-length of AjTRAF3 was of 2796 bp including a 5' untranslated region (UTR) of 83 bp, a 3' UTR of 1066 bp and a putative open reading frame of 1647 bp encoding a polypeptide of 548 amino acid residues. The representative domains such as a RING finger domain (residues 54-96), two TRAF domains with zinc finger structure (residues 141-228), a coiled coil and a meprin and TRAF homology (MATH) domain (residues 396-522) were all detected in the deduced amino acids of AjTRAF3. AjTRAF3 was ubiquitously expressed in all examined tissues with predominant expression in the body wall and slightly weaker in intestine, respiratory tree, tube feet, coelomocytes and longitudinal muscle. Time-course expression analysis in coelomocytes revealed that AjTRAF3 was significantly depressed towards Vibrio splendidus infection with a 0.20-fold decrease at 12 h, compared to control levels. AjTRAF3 silencing could elevate intracellular ROS levels by 2.08-fold and 2.09-fold compared to each control group in vitro and in vivo, respectively. Taken together, all these results suggested that AjTRAF3 may play a crucial role in the processes of anti-bacteria response in sea cucumber through regulating ROS production.

Abstract
This study was conducted to determine effects of potential probiotic Bacillus cereus EN25 (isolated from mud of sea cucumber culturing water bodies) on growth, immunity and disease resistance against Vibrio splendidus infection in juvenile sea cucumbers Apostichopus japonicus. Animals were respectively fed diets with B. cereus EN25 at 0 (control), 10(5), 10(7) and 10(9) CFU/g for 30 days. Results showed that dietary B. cereus EN25 had no significant effects on growth, total coelomocytes counts and acid phosphatase activity of A. japonicus (P > 0.05). Dietary EN25 at 10(7) CFU/g had significantly improved the phagocytosis, respiratory burst activity and total nitric oxide synthase activity of animals (P < 0.05). Compared to control, dietary EN25 at 10(5) or 10(7) CFU/g had no significant effects on superoxide dismutase activity of A. japonicus (P > 0.05), whereas dietary EN25 at 10(9) CFU/g had significantly decreased its activity (P < 0.05). The cumulative mortality after V. splendidus challenge decreased significantly in sea cucumbers fed with EN25 at 10(7) CFU/g (P < 0.05). The present study confirmed dietary B. cereus EN25 at 10(7) CFU/g could significantly improve immunity and disease resistance in juvenile A. japonicus.
