Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence shows that long-term exposure to air pollution, road traffic noise, and greenness can each be associated with cardiovascular disease, but only few studies combined these exposures. In this study, we assessed associations of multiple environmental exposures and incidence of myocardial infarction using annual time-varying predictors. MATERIALS AND METHODS In a population-based cohort of 20,407 women in Sweden, we estimated a five-year moving average of residential exposure to air pollution (PM2.5, PM10 and NO2), road traffic noise (Lden), and greenness (normalized difference vegetation index, NDVI in 500 m buffers), from 1998 to 2017 based on annually varying exposures and address history. We used adjusted time-varying Cox proportional hazards regressions to estimate hazard ratios (HR) and 95 % confidence intervals (95 % CI) of myocardial infarction per interquartile range (IQR). Furthermore, we investigated interactions between the exposures and explored potential vulnerable subgroups. RESULTS In multi-exposure models, long-term exposure to greenness was inversely associated with incidence of myocardial infarction (HR 0.89; 95 % CI 0.80, 0.99 per IQR NDVI increase). Stronger associations were observed in some subgroups, e.g. among women with low attained education and in overweight (BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2) compared to their counterparts. For air pollution, we observed a tendency of an increased risk of myocardial infarction in relation to PM2.5 (HR 1.07; 95 % CI 0.93, 1.23) and the association appeared stronger in women with low attained education (HR 1.30; 95 % CI 1.06, 1.58). No associations were observed for PM10, NO2 or road traffic noise. Furthermore, there were no clear interaction patterns between the exposures. CONCLUSION Over a 20-year follow-up period, in multi-exposure models, we found an inverse association between residential greenness and risk of myocardial infarction among women. Furthermore, we observed an increased risk of myocardial infarction in relation to PM2.5 among women with low attained education. Road traffic noise was not associated with myocardial infarction.

Abstract
Ethylene oxide (EO) is an organic compound known for its high reactivity and negative impact on human health, but its adverse effects on depression remain poorly understood. A cross-sectional study was conducted among 2884 participants from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) between 2013 and 2016. Participants were classified into four groups according to quartiles of log10-transformed hemoglobin adducts of EO (HbEO) levels. A logistic regression model was used to estimate the association between EO exposure and the risk of depression. Finally, we evaluated whether the association was mediated by inflammatory factors. Individuals with depression exhibited higher levels of hemoglobin adducts of ethylene oxide (HbEO) compared to those without depression. After adjusting for all covariates, patients in the highest quartile of HbEO (Q4 group) had a higher risk of depression, using the lowest quartile (Q1 group) as the reference group [odds ratio (OR) = 2.21, 95% confidence interval (95% CI): (1.47, 3.40)]. Additionally, the relationship between EO levels and the prevalence of depression followed a non-linear U-shaped pattern. Furthermore, inflammatory cells showed a positive correlation with EO levels. Moreover, white blood cells and neutrophils significantly mediated the relationship between HbEO and the risk of depression with mediated proportions of 14.70 and 12.55%, respectively. Exposure to ethylene oxide increases the risk of depression. Inflammatory factors partially mediated the observed association between EO exposure and depression.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Several studies have investigated the relationship of greenspace with blood pressure (BP) and hypertension, but the results were inconsistent. We aimed to assess the relationship of greenspace with BP/hypertension. METHODS We searched PubMed, Embase and Web of Science on greenspace and BP/hypertension published before 5 April 2023. The methodological quality and risk of bias were evaluated. RESULTS Twenty-seven articles were included. Our results suggested that higher normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) was associated with lower odds of hypertension and levels of SBP [for every 10% increase of NDVI 500-m and NDVI 1000-m, the ORs were 0.95 (95% CI: 0.90-0.99) and 0.95 (95% CI: 0.90-0.99), the ꞵwas -1.32 (95% CI: -2.18, -0.45) and -1.41 (95% CI: -2.57, -0.25), respectively]. CONCLUSION This study indicated that higher exposure to greenspace might be associated with lower levels of BP and risk of hypertension. Increase green spaces should be regarded as an important public health intervention..

Abstract
The association between long-term exposure to air pollution and mortality from lung cancer has been established, yet evaluations of the potential mitigating effects of greenness on this impact are scarce. We conducted a cohort study in Pingyi County. A two-level Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to examine the associations among long-term exposure to air pollution, residential greenness, and lung cancer mortality. Among the examined pollutants, nitrogen dioxide exhibited the most significant adverse effects and highest risk of lung cancer mortality, with hazard ratio (HR) = 2.783 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.885-4.107) for all-cause mortality, HR = 2.492 (95%CI: 1.659-3.741) for tumour-related mortality, and HR = 2.431 (95%CI: 1.606-3.678) for lung cancer mortality. Higher greenness values were associated with a reduced risk of lung cancer mortality. These findings suggest the importance of implementing strategies for increasing greenness to reduce the health impacts of air pollution.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION The impact of residential green spaces on cardiovascular health in older adults remains uncertain. METHODS Cohort study involving 2114 adults aged ≥ 65 years without cardiovascular disease (CVD), residing in five dense municipalities (Prince et al., 2015) of the Madrid region and with detailed characterization of their socioeconomic background, health behaviors, CVD biological risk factors, and mental, physical, and cognitive health. Greenness exposure was measured using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) at varying distances from participants' homes. Traffic exposure, neighborhood environment, neighborhood walkability, and socioeconomic deprivation at the census level were also assessed. Serum N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-ProBNP), high-sensitivity troponin T (hs-TnT), interleukin 6 (IL-6), and Growth Differentiation Factor 15 (GDF-15) were measured at baseline, and incident CVD events identified through electronic medical records (International Classification of Primary Care-2 codes K74, K75, K77, K90, and K92). RESULTS After adjusting for sex, age, educational attainment, financial hardship and socioeconomic deprivation at the census level, an interquartile range (IQR) increase in NDVI at 250, 500, 750, and 1000 m around participants' homes was associated with mean differences in ProBNP of -5.56 % (95 %CI: -9.77; -1.35), -5.05 % (-9.58; -0.53), -4.24 % (-8.19, -0.19), and -4.16 % (-7.59; -0.74), respectively; and mean differences in hs-TnT among diabetic participants of -8.03 % (95 %CI: -13.30; -2.77), -9.52 % (-16.08; -2.96), -8.05 % (-13.94, -2.16) and -5.56 % (-10.75; -0.54), respectively. Of similar magnitude, although only statistically significant at 250 and 500 m, were the observed lower IL-6 levels with increasing greenness. GDF-15 levels were independent of NDVI. In prospective analyses (median follow-up 6.29 years), an IQR increase in residential greenness at 500, 750, and 1000 m was associated with a lower risk of incident CVD. The variables that contributed most to the apparent beneficial effects of greenness on CVD were lower exposure to traffic, improved cardiovascular risk factors, and enhanced physical performance. Additionally, neighborhood walkability and increased physical activity were notable contributors among individuals with diabetes. CONCLUSION Increased exposure to residential green space was associated with a moderate reduction in CVD risk in older adults residing in densely populated areas.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Higher neighbourhood greenness is associated with beneficial health outcomes, and short-term exposure to air pollution is associated with an elevated risk of stroke onset. However, little is known about their interactions. METHODS Daily data on stroke first onset were collected from 20 counties in Shangdong Province, China, from 2013 to 2019. The enhanced vegetation index (EVI) and concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM2.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), carbon monoxide (CO), and sulfur dioxide (SO2) were calculated for each individual at the village or community level based on their home address to measure their neighbourhood exposure to greenness and air pollution. EVI was categorised as low or high, and a time-stratified case-crossover design was used to estimate the percent excess risk (ER%) of stroke associated with short-term exposure to air pollution. We further stratified greenness on the basis of EVI values into quartiles and introduced interaction terms between air pollutant concentrations and the median EVI values of the quartiles to assess the effect of greenness on the associations between short-term exposure and stroke. RESULTS Individuals living in the high-greenness areas had weaker associations between total stroke risk and exposure to NO2 (low greenness: ER% = 1.765% [95% CI 1.205%-2.328%]; high greenness: ER% = 0.368% [95% CI -0.252% to 0.991%]; P = 0.001), O3 (low greenness: 0.476% [95% CI 0.246%-0.706%]; high greenness: ER% = 0.085% [95% CI -0.156% to 0.327%]; P = 0.011), and SO2 (low greenness: 0.632% [95% CI 0.138%-1.129%]; high greenness: ER% = -0.177% [95% CI -0.782% to 0.431%]; P = 0.035). CONCLUSION Residence in areas with higher greenness was related to weaker associations between air pollution and stroke risk, suggesting that effectively planning green spaces can improve public health.

Abstract
Few studies have explored the effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its constituents on the progression of cerebral blood flow velocity (BFV) and the potential modifying role of greenness. In this study, we investigated the association of PM2.5 and its constituents, including sulfate (SO4 2-), nitrate (NO3 -), ammonium (NH4 +), organic matter (OM), and black carbon (BC), with the progression of BFV in the middle cerebral artery. Participants from the Beijing Health Management Cohort who underwent at least two transcranial Doppler sonography examinations during 2015-2020 were recruited. BFV change and BFV change rate were used to define the progression of cerebral BFV. Linear mixed effects models were employed to analyze the data, and the weighted quantile sum regression assessed the contribution of PM2.5 constituents. Additionally, greenness was examined as a modifier. Among the examined constituents, OM exhibited the strongest association with BFV progression. An interquartile range increase in PM2.5 and OM exposure concentrations was associated with a decrease of -16.519 cm/s (95% CI: -17.837, -15.201) and -15.403 cm/s (95% CI: -16.681, -14.126) in BFV change, and -10.369 cm/s/year (95% CI: -11.387, -9.352) and -9.615 cm/s/year (95% CI: -10.599, -8.632) in BFV change rate, respectively. Furthermore, stronger associations between PM2.5 and BFV progression were observed in individuals working in areas with lower greenness, those aged under 45 years, and females. In conclusion, reducing PM2.5 levels in the air, particularly the OM constituent, and enhancing greenness could potentially contribute to the protection of cerebrovascular health.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are a leading cause of mortality globally. In particular, ischemic heart diseases (IHDs) and cerebrovascular diseases (CBVDs) represent the main drivers of CVD-related deaths. Many literature examples have assessed the association between CVD risk factors and urban greenness. Urban green (UG) may positively affect physical activity, reduce air and noise pollution, and mitigate the heat island effect, which are known risk factors for CVD morbidity. This systematic review aims to assess the effects of urban green spaces on CVD morbidity and mortality. Peer-reviewed research articles with a quantitative association between urban green exposure variables and cardiovascular and cerebrovascular outcomes were included. Meta-analyses were conducted for each outcome evaluated in at least three comparable studies. Most of the included studies' results highlighted an inverse correlation between exposure to UG and CVD outcomes. Gender differences were found in four studies, with a protective effect of UG only statistically significant in men. Three meta-analyses were performed, showing an overall protective effect of UG on CVD mortality (HR (95% CI) = 0.94 (0.91, 0.97)), IHD mortality (HR (95% CI) = 0.96 (0.93, 0.99)), and CBVD mortality (HR (95% CI) = 0.96 (0.94, 0.97)). The results of this systematic review suggest that exposure to UG may represent a protective factor for CVDs.

Abstract
Little evidence exists concerning the associations of greenspace with childhood lipid profiles and dyslipidemias, especially in developing countries and regions. We aimed to investigate the associations of greenspace surrounding schools with lipid levels and dyslipidemia prevalence among Chinese children and teenagers. We obtained baseline information and health data of 10,408 children and teenagers (aged 6-18 years) who studied from 94 schools in China. We measured levels of four blood lipids: triglycerides (TG), total cholesterol (TC), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C) and low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C). Dyslipidemias were defined using standard recommendations. Greenness surrounding schools were assessed using two satellite-based greenness indices, Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Soil Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI) at 300-, 500-, and 1000-m circular buffers based on each school's latitude and longitude. We used random forest model combined with meteorological and remote sensing data to estimate air pollution levels surrounding each school. We used generalized linear mixed models to estimate the associations of greenness with lipid levels and dyslipidemias prevalence. We also performed sub-group and mediation analyses. An interquartile range (IQR) increase in NDVI500m was significantly associated with a 0.064 mmol/L (95% confidence interval [CI]: 0.083, -0.045) and 0.049 mmol/L (95% CI: 0.065, -0.033) decreased TC and LDL-C levels, respectively, as well as a 0.13-fold (95% CI: 0.01, 0.23) and 0.17-fold (95% CI: 0.01, 0.30) decreased odds of hypercholesterolemia and hyperbetalipoproteinemia, respectively. Associations were stronger in students aged ≤12 years and born to parents having lower education levels compared to their counterparts. Particle with aerodynamic diameter ≤2.5 μm (PM2.5) mediated 61.5% and 16.7% of the association of greenness with TG and LDL-C levels, respectively. In summary, higher school-based greenness exposure was beneficially associated with lipid levels among Chinese children and adolescents, and part of the association can be explained by lowed PM2.5 levels.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Previous studies on residential green space were inconsistent with blood lipid levels and hyperlipidemia. Thus, our study aims to explore the relationship between urban residential greenness and the blood lipid level and hyperlipidemia of the Chinese elderly population. METHODS A total of 59,865 older adults were collected from the Shenzhen healthy aging Research (SHARE). Blood lipid levels [total cholesterol (TC), triglycerides (TG), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), and high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C)] were measured. Participants' exposure to residential greenness was measured by the satellite-based normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI). Generalized linear mixed models (GLMMs) and logistic regression were performed to assess the associations of residential greenness with lipid levels and dyslipidemia (high TG, high TC, low HDL-C, and high LDL-C). RESULTS Each per 1 standard deviation (SD) increase in NDVI250-m was associated with a higher HDL-C level (β = 0.003, 95% (confidence interval, CI):0.001-0.005) and lower TG level (β = - 0.005, 95% CI - 0.141-0.121), after fully adjusting for covariates. Each increment in per interquartile range (IQR)-unit increase in NDVI250-m was associated with lower odds of high TG (odds ratio, OR 0.94, 95% CI 0.91-0.97) and low HDL-C (OR 0.96, 95% CI 0.94-0.99). The NDVI250-m has the highest protective effect on the incidence of high TG and low HDL-C, followed by NDVI500-m and NDVI1250-m. Stratified analyses showed that association between residential greenness and hyperlipidemia was modified by sex, age, BMI, household registration, and physical activity. CONCLUSION Higher greenness exposure was beneficially associated with lipid levels and dyslipidemia among Chinese city-dwelling older adults.

Abstract
In an increasingly urbanized world, where cardiometabolic issues in cities have raised public health concerns, urban greenness is known to be beneficial for some of the most common health issues. However, the examination of the contribution of sex and gender regarding the benefits of urban greenness for people's cardiometabolic health is lacking. For that reason, we conducted a systematic review of previous literature on the topic following the PRISMA methodology. Additionally, we assessed the quality of the included articles, which we found satisfactory as most papers were of very good or good quality. We explored the relationship between urban greenness exposure and cardiovascular risk factors, cardiovascular diseases, and mortality from cardiovascular diseases. Results suggest that urban greenness is protective against cardiovascular risk factors, diseases, and mortality. When stratifying results by sex and gender, findings point to urban greenness being more beneficial for women and females in stroke and cardiovascular risk factors, except for hypertension and lipid accumulation product. On the other hand, males were more protected by urban greenness in terms of cardiovascular diseases and CVD-related mortality, thus proving that sex and gender health inequalities exist. Furthermore, looking towards the future, research needs to use the proper terminology for sex and gender and policy makers should design urban greenness with a gender perspective.

Abstract
In recent years, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have become the primary cause of death in the world. Existing studies have found that greenspace is important for the prevention of CVDs and stroke. However, since they only focus on large green infrastructure (e.g., urban parks) or the general greenspace (usually being evaluated through normalized difference vegetation index), little information exists regarding the association between street-level greenspace and CVDs (stroke). In this study, the CVDs and stroke data of participants were retrieved from the 33 Chinese Community Health Study. We measured participants' exposure to street-level greenspace exposure using street view images and machine learning technique. Multilevel logistic regressions were applied. While controlling for confounders, we found that higher level of street-level greenspace exposure was associated with lower CVDs prevalence. However, street-level greenspace exposure was associated with stroke prevalence only for females. The associations were stronger among females, younger adults, participants with educational attainment above high school, physically active participants and participants who were not overweight. None of the mediators (air pollution, physical exercise, and BMI) can explain the associations between street-level greenspace exposure and CVDs (stroke) prevalence. Our findings suggest that street-level vegetation should be increased to cope with the rapid growth of the CVDs burdens. Also, the differences between the effect of street-level trees and grasses should be noted before formulating specific urban planning policies.

Abstract
Emerging evidence suggests that residential open space (ROS) is beneficial for multiple health outcomes for urban residents. However, the general public's understanding of and demand for the health benefits related to ROS have not been widely explored. This study aims to examine the impact of residents' socioeconomic status and perceptions of landscape health benefits on their willingness to pay (WTP) for ROS and to evaluate the perceived monetary value of different residential landscape elements. An online survey with 1348 respondents was conducted between August 2020 and October 2021 in China using a contingent valuation (CV) method. Respondents perceived the landscape benefits related to mental health to be higher than those related to physical and social health. The perception of landscape health benefits positively affected WTP and the WTP value of ROS. Residents' monthly income was a significant influencing factor for WTP and the latter's value. For individuals with positive WTP, the average annual WTP for ROS was CNY 68.98 (USD 10.81), while for all the respondents, the estimated mean annual WTP for ROS was CNY 91.75 (USD 14.38). Moreover, the estimated WTP for plants was the highest, whereas the WTP for activity spaces was estimated as the lowest. These findings may improve city planners' and community managers' understanding of the perceived value of residential landscapes among the public and help them make effective decisions to build healthy communities.

Abstract
Exposure to green space has been proposed to be beneficially associated with cardiovascular morbidity and mortality. Many studies have explored this topic, but the results remain conflicting. We aimed to evaluate the epidemiological evidence on this topic by performing a systematic review with meta-analysis. We searched PubMed, Web of Science and Embase for studies on the association between green space and cardiovascular disease (CVD) that were published till January 2022. Two authors independently performed study selection, data extraction, quality assessment, and risk of bias assessment. For studies providing detailed numeric data, we also conducted quantitative meta-analyses and calculated the pooled odd ratios (ORs) for associations between the most commonly used exposure estimate (normalized difference vegetative index [NDVI]) and five CVD events: CVD mortality, ischemic heart disease (IHD) mortality, cerebrovascular disease (CBVD) mortality, and stroke incidence/prevalence. Additional analyses were conducted to explore the geographical scale effects of NDVI. Publication bias tests were also conducted. Of the 6787 records identified, 53 studies were eligible for inclusion. These studies covered 18 countries and included data from more than 100 million persons. Meta-analyses showed that a 0.1 increase in NDVI was significantly associated with 2-3% lower odds of CVD mortality (OR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.96-0.99), IHD mortality (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-1.00), CBVD mortality (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.97-1.00), and stroke incidence/prevalence (OR: 0.98, 95% CI: 0.96-0.99). There was no significant difference between the pooled estimates for different buffer sizes. No evidence of publication bias was detected. We provide strong and robust evidence for the beneficial effects of green space exposure on cardiovascular health. More prospective studies and mechanistic studies, especially that conducted in low- and middle-income countries, are merited to strengthen our conclusions.

Abstract
Evidence regarding environmental factors associated with disease severity of COVID-19 remained scarce. This study aimed to investigate the association of residential greenness exposure with COVID-19 severity applying a retrospective cross-sectional study in Wuhan, China. We included 30,253 COVID-19 cases aged over 45 years from January 1 to February 27, 2020. Residential greenness was quantitatively assessed using normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) and enhanced vegetation index (EVI). A multilevel generalized linear model using Poisson regression was implemented to analyze the association between greenness exposure and disease severity of COVID-19, after adjusting for potential covariates. A linear exposure-response relationship was found between greenness and COVID-19 severity. In the adjusted model, one 0.1 unit increase of NDVI and EVI in the 1000-m buffer radius was significantly associated with a 7.6% (95% confidence interval (CI): 4.0%, 11.1%) and 10.0% (95% CI: 5.1%, 14.7%) reduction of the prevalence of COVID-19 severity, respectively. The effect of residential greenness seemed to be more pronounced among participants with lower population density and economic levels. Air pollutants mediated 0.82~12.08% of the greenness and COVID-19 severity association, particularly to nitrogen dioxide. Sensitivity analyses suggested the robustness of the results. Our findings suggested that residential greenness exposure was beneficial to reduce the prevalence of COVID-19 severity.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is an increased literature focusing on the role of the built and natural environments in preventing hypertension. However, very few studies have quantitively analyzed specific pathways through which urban form affects blood pressure levels. OBJECTIVES To examine how features of the built and natural environments relate to hypertension and the mediating role of transportation and leisure walking and body mass index in this relationship. METHODS We examined the association between neighbourhood walkability and park availability with hypertension through generalized linear models in two independent population cohorts. One Cohort was 22,418 adults (My Health My Community) and the other cohort was 11,972 adults (BC Generations Project). We employed a path analysis modelling approach to explore the presence and significance of mediating factors that may contribute to any association between walkability or park availability and hypertension. This study intentionally employed walkability measures enforced through municipal zoning and subdivision regulations legally underpinned by health, safety, and welfare. All models were adjusted for socioeconomic and other characteristics where data were available. RESULTS Our analysis of two population-based Canadian cohorts consistently found that higher levels of walkability and park accessibility were both associated with significantly lower odds of self-reported hypertension, especially for lower income individuals. Mediation analysis showed that obesity accounted for 50% and 52.9% of the total effect of walkability and park accessibility on hypertension, respectively. DISCUSSION We suggest an integrated population health approach that considers multimorbidity as a result of exposure to car-dependent areas and the lack of green spaces. Longitudinal research is needed to document causal effects of built and natural environments on hypertension.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are major contributors to morbidity and mortality in lower-middle-income countries (LMICs). Features of the natural environment, such as greenness, are a potential, modifiable determinant of CVD, yet there is a lack of evidence, particularly in LMICs. Our study investigated associations between residential greenness, measured using the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and self-reported heart disease in 5268 Sri Lankan men aged 34 to 55 years. Multivariable logistic regression models were fitted to examine associations between mean NDVI within 100 m, 400 m, 800 m, 1600 m, and 2000 m of the residential address, adjusting for age, marital status, income, education, alcohol consumption, smoking and road length. Fully adjusted models showed that a 0.1 increase in mean NDVI was associated with lower odds of heart disease when using the 400 m (OR: 0.80; 95% CI: 0.64, 1.00), 800 m (OR: 0.85; 95% CI: 0.63, 1.14), and 2000 m (OR: 0.74; 95% CI: 0.48, 1.13) buffers. Further research in different contexts, and with improved outcome measures, is needed to confirm relationships between residential greenness and heart disease in rural areas and in LMICs.
