Abstract
Bronchial asthma (BA) continues to be a difficult disease to diagnose. Various factors have been described in the development of BA, but to date, there is no clear evidence for the etiology of this chronic disease. The emergence of COVID-19 has contributed to the pandemic course of asthma and immunologic features. However, there are no unambiguous data on asthma on the background and after COVID-19. There is correlation between various trigger factors that provoke the development of bronchial asthma. It is now obvious that the SARS-CoV-2 virus is one of the provoking factors. COVID-19 has affected the course of asthma. Currently, there is no clear understanding of whether asthma progresses during or after COVID-19 infection. According to the results of some studies, a significant difference was identified between the development of asthma in people after COVID-19. Mild asthma and moderate asthma do not increase the severity of COVID-19 infection. Nevertheless, oral steroid treatment and hospitalization for severe BA were associated with higher COVID-19 severity. The influence of SARS-CoV-2 infection is one of the protective factors. It causes the development of severe bronchial asthma. The accumulated experience with omalizumab in patients with severe asthma during COVID-19, who received omalizumab during the pandemic, has strongly suggested that continued treatment with omalizumab is safe and may help prevent the severe course of COVID-19. Targeted therapy for asthma with the use of omalizumab may also help to reduce severe asthma associated with COVID-19. However, further studies are needed to prove the effect of omalizumab. Data analysis should persist, based on the results of the course of asthma after COVID-19 with varying degrees of severity.

Abstract
The severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection is the cause of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19); a severe respiratory distress that has emerged from the city of Wuhan, Hubei province, China during December 2019. COVID-19 is currently the major global health problem and the disease has now spread to most countries in the world. COVID-19 has profoundly impacted human health and activities worldwide. Genetic mutation is one of the essential characteristics of viruses. They do so to adapt to their host or to move to another one. Viral genetic mutations have a high potentiality to impact human health as these mutations grant viruses unique unpredicted characteristics. The difficulty in predicting viral genetic mutations is a significant obstacle in the field. Evidence indicates that SARS-CoV-2 has a variety of genetic mutations and genomic diversity with obvious clinical consequences and implications. In this review, we comprehensively summarized and discussed the currently available knowledge regarding SARS-CoV-2 outbreaks with a fundamental focus on the role of the viral proteins and their mutations in viral infection and COVID-19 progression. We also summarized the clinical implications of SARS-CoV-2 variants and how they affect the disease severity and hinder vaccine development. Finally, we provided a massive phylogenetic analysis of the spike gene of 214 SARS-CoV-2 isolates from different geographical regions all over the world and their associated clinical implications.

Abstract
In stark contrast to adult patients, children who contract Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) typically manifest milder symptoms or remain asymptomatic. However, the precise underlying mechanisms of this pathogenesis remain elusive. In this review, we primarily retrospect the clinical characteristics of SARS-CoV-2 infection in children, and explore the factors that may contribute to the typically milder clinical presentation in pediatric Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients compare with adults patients with COVID-19. The pathophysiological mechanisms that mitigate lung injury in children are as follows: the expression level of ACE2 receptor in children is lower; the binding affinity between ACE2 receptors and viral spike proteins in children was weaker; children have strong pre-activated innate immune response and appropriate adaptive immune response; children have more natural lymphocytes; children with COVID-19 can produce higher levels of IgM, IgG and interferon; children infected with SARS-CoV-2 can produce lower levels of IL-6 and IL-10; children have fewer underlying diseases and the lower risk of worsening COVID-19; children are usually exposed to other respiratory viruses and have an enhanced cross-reactive immunity. Comprehending the relative contributions of these processes to the protective phenotype in the developing lungs can help in the diagnosis, treatment and research pertaining to children with COVID-19.

Abstract
Background: Neutrophil extracellular trap (NET) formation is a mechanism that neutrophils possess to respond to host infection or inflammation. However, dysregulation of NETosis has been implicated in many disease processes. Although the exact mechanisms of their involvement remain largely unknown, this study aimed to elucidate NET formation over the time course of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and their possible role in endothelial injury. Patients and Methods: Plasma samples from COVID-19-positive patients were obtained at six timepoints during hospitalization. Neutrophils were extracted from healthy donors and treated with COVID-19-positive patient plasma. Myeloperoxidase (MPO) assay was used to assess for NETosis. Syndecan-1 (SDC-1) enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was run using the same samples. Immunocytochemistry allowed for further quantification of NETosis byproducts MPO and citrullinated histone 3 (CitH3). The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve discriminated between admission levels of SDC-1 and MPO in predicting 30-day mortality and need for ventilator support. Results: Sixty-three patients with COVID-19 were analyzed. Myeloperoxidase was upregulated at day 3, 7, and 14 (p = 0.0087, p = 0.0144, p = 0.0421). Syndecan-1 levels were elevated at day 7 and 14 (p = 0.0188, p = 0.0026). Neutrophils treated with day 3, 7, and 14 plasma expressed increased levels of MPO (p < 0.001). Immunocytochemistry showed neutrophils treated with day 3, 7, and 14 plasma expressed higher levels of MPO (p < 0.001) and higher levels of CitH3 when treated with day 7 and 14 plasma (p < 0.01 and p < 0.05). Admission SDC-1 and MPO levels were found to be independent predictors of 30-day mortality and need for ventilator support. Conclusions: Neutrophil dysregulation can be detrimental to the host. Our study shows that COVID-19 plasma induces substantial amounts of NET formation that persists over the course of the disease. Patients also exhibit increased SDC-1 levels that implicate endothelial injury in the pathogenesis of COVID-19 infection. Furthermore, MPO and SDC-1 plasma levels are predictive of poor outcomes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There are many studies on the relationship between vitamin D and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), while the results are matters of debate and the mechanisms remain unknown. The present study was performed to assess the impact of serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D [25(OH)D] levels on the severity of disease in hospitalized COVID-19 patients and identify potential mechanisms of 25(OH)D alterations. METHODS A total of 399 hospitalized COVID-19 patients were recruited from three centers between December 19, 2022, and February 1, 2023. Medical history, laboratory examination, and radiologic data were retrospectively collected. The patients were divided into four groups based on disease severity. Serum 25(OH)D levels in the patients were determined by the electrochemiluminescence method and cytokines were detected by flow cytometry. The relationship between serum 25(OH)D status and the severity of COVID-19, and the correlation between 25(OH)D levels and cytokines in COVID-19 patients were assessed. RESULTS Levels of 25(OH)D were significantly lower in the deceased group than in the other three groups (P < 0.05), and lower in the critical group than in the general group (P < 0.05). There were no significant differences in the 25(OH)D levels between the general and severe groups (P > 0.05). The levels of 25(OH)D (odds ratio = 0.986, 95% confidence interval: 0.973-0.998, P = 0.024) and IL-5 (odds ratio = 1.239, 95% confidence interval: 1.104-1.391, P = 0.04) were independent risk factors for the severity of COVID-19 disease upon admission. Serum 25(OH)D levels were able to predict the mortality of patients with COVID-19, and the predictive value was even higher when combined with IL-5 levels and eosinophil (Eos) count. Circulating 25(OH)D status correlated negatively with the expression of IL-5 (r=-0.262, P < 0.001) and was positively linked with CD8+ T cell counts (r=-0.121, P < 0.05) in patients with COVID-19. CONCLUSIONS This study found that the serum 25(OH)D status combined with IL-5 levels and Eos counts could be identified as a predictive factor for recognizing the risk of COVID-19 mortality. The serum 25(OH)D status in COVID-19 patients correlated negatively with the expression of IL-5. The potential mechanism for this relationship is worth further exploration.

Abstract
ABSTRACT Background: The COVID-19 pandemic has posed a disproportionately high threat to the global health system and social stability. COVID-19 damage can lead to hyperinflammation and tissue damage due to a "cytokine storm," which in turn contributes to an increase in the mortality rate. Extracorporeal hemoadsorption therapy (HAT) in patients with severe COVID-19 may improve organ function and stabilize hemodynamic status; however, the effects of supplemental HAT remain controversial. Methods: The Cochrane Library, Embase, and PubMed databases were comprehensively searched from inception to August 20, 2022, for potential studies. Results: A total of 648 patients with severe COVID-19 in three randomized controlled trials and 11 observational studies met the inclusion criteria. A meta-analysis indicated that supplemental HAT significantly improved the mortality rate of patients with severe COVID-19 compared with conventional therapy (relative risk [RR] = 0.74, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.56 to 0.96, P = 0.026). In subgroup analyses, supplemental HAT significantly decreased mortality rates in patients without extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support (RR = 0.59, 95% CI = 0.44-0.79, P < 0.0001), while a significant difference was not observed in patients requiring ECMO support (RR = 1.61, 95% CI = 0.63-4.09, P = 0.316). Standardized mean difference (SMD) meta-analysis showed that IL-6 removal was more significant in HAT group than conventional therapy group (SMD = 0.46, 95% CI = 0.01 to 0.91, P = 0.043), followed by C-reactive protein (SMD = 0.70, 95% CI = -0.04 to 1.44, P = 0.065) and IL-8 (SMD = 0.36, 95% CI = -0.34 to 1.07, P = 0.311). No evidence of substantial publication bias concerning mortality was observed. Conclusion: Given the better mortality outcomes, HAT confers clinical benefits to patients with severe COVID-19, which correlated with cytokine removal by HAT. Cytokine adsorption may not provide clinical benefits for patients with severe COVID-19 requiring ECMO and should be used with caution. However, because of the very low quality of evidence, multicenter randomized trials with large sample sizes are required to verify these findings.

Abstract
Following the global spread of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection, the importance of investigation of the pathogenesis and immunological characteristics of COVID-19 became quite clear. Currently, there are reports indicating that COVID-19 is able to induce autoimmune responses. Abnormal immune reactions are a cornerstone in the pathogenicity of both conditions. Detection of autoantibodies in COVID-19 patients may suggest a link between COVID-19 and autoimmunity. In this study, we focused on the similarities and possible differences between COVID-19 and autoimmune disorders to explore the relationship between them. Comparing the pathogenicity of SARS-CoV-2 infection with autoimmune conditions revealed significant immunological properties of COVID-19 including the presence of several autoantibodies, autoimmunity-related cytokines, and cellular activities that could be useful in future clinical studies aiming at managing this pandemic.

Abstract
Various biomarkers like certain complete blood cell count parameters and the derived ratios including neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio are commonly used to evaluate disease severity. Our study aimed to establish if baseline levels of complete blood cell count-derived biomarkers and CRP, measured before any treatment which can interfere with their values, could serve as a predictor of development of pneumonia and the need for hospitalization requiring oxygen therapy. We retrospectively analyzed the laboratory data of 200 consecutive patients without comorbidities, who denied usage of medications prior to blood analysis and visited a COVID-19 ambulance between October and December 2021. Multivariate regression analysis extracted older age, elevated CRP and lower eosinophil count as significant independent predictors of pneumonia (p = 0.003, p = 0.000, p = 0.046, respectively). Independent predictors of hospitalization were higher CRP (p = 0.000) and lower platelet count (p = 0.005). There was no significant difference in the neutrophil-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte ratios between examined groups. Individual biomarkers such as platelet and eosinophil count might be better in predicting the severity of COVID-19 than the neutrophil-lymphocyte and platelet-lymphocyte ratios.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by a novel coronavirus, manifests as a respiratory illness primarily and symptoms range from asymptomatic to severe respiratory syndrome and even death. During the pandemic, due to overcrowding of medical facilities, clinical assessment to triage patients for home care or in-hospital treatment was an essential element of management. OBJECTIVES Study the demographic features, comorbidities and bio-markers that predict severe illness and mortality from COVID-19 infection. DESIGN Retrospective observational SETTING: Single tertiary care center PATIENTS AND METHODS: The study included all patients admitted with a positive PCR test for COVID-19 during the period from March 2020 to September 2020 (7 months). Data on demographics, clinical data and laboratory parameters was collected from medical records every 3 days during hospital stay or up until transfer to ICU. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES Demographic, comorbidities and biochemical features that might predict severe COVID-19 disease. SAMPLE SIZE 372 RESULTS: Of the 372 patients, 72 (19.4%) had severe disease requiring admission to intensive care unit (ICU); 6 (1.6%) died. Individuals over 62 years were more likely to be admitted to the ICU (P=.0001, while a BMI of 40 and higher increased the odds of severe disease (P=.032). Male gender (P=.042), hypertension (P=.006) and diabetes (P=.001) conferred a statistically significant increased risk of admission to ICU, while coexisting COPD, and ischemic heart disease did not. Laboratory features related to severe COVID-19 infection were: leukocytosis (P=.015), thrombocytopenia (P=.001), high levels of C-reactive protein (P=.0001), lactic dehydrogenase (P=.0001), D-dimer (P=.0001) and ferritin (P=.001). With the multivariate analysis, diabetes, high lac-tate dehydrogenase, C-reactive protein and thrombocytopenia were associated with severity of illness. CONCLUSIONS Particular demographic and clinical parameters may predict severe illness and need for ICU care. LIMITATIONS Single referral center, several cases of severe COVID-19 could not be included due to lack of consent and or data. CONFLICT OF INTEREST None.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to analyze the serum concentration of interleukin-6 (IL-6), C-reactive protein (CRP), D-dimer, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), ferritin, and procalcitonin in COVID-19 patients with different forms of the disease. We performed a prospective cohort study on 137 COVID-19 consecutive patients, divided into four groups according to the severity of the disease as follows: 30 patients in the mild form group, 49 in the moderate form group, 28 in the severe form group, and 30 in the critical form group. The tested parameters were correlated with COVID-19 severity. Significant differences were registered between the form of COVID-19 depending on the vaccination status, between LDH concentrations depending on the virus variant, and in IL-6, CRP, and ferritin concentrations and vaccination status depending on the gender. ROC analysis revealed that D-dimer best predicted COVID-19 severe forms and LDH predicted the virus variant. Our findings confirmed the interdependence relationships observed between inflammation markers in relation to the clinical severity of COVID-19, with all the tested biomarkers increasing in severe and critical COVID-19. IL-6, CRP, ferritin, LDH, and D-dimer were increased in all COVID-19 forms. These inflammatory markers were lower in Omicron-infected patients. The unvaccinated patients developed more severe forms compared to the vaccinated ones, and a higher proportion of them needed hospitalization. D-dimer could predict a severe form of COVID-19, while LDH could predict the virus variant.

Abstract
It is important to identify risk factors for poor outcomes of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. Currently, the correlation between non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and COVID-19 outcomes has not been established. This study was conducted to determine the association between NAFLD and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 patients. The systematic searches were conducted by using PubMed and the Europe PMC databases and particular keywords were used as of December 10, 2020. Further searches were conducted up to 2022. All articles that include data about COVID-19 and fatty liver disease were collected. Statistical analysis was performed by using Review Manager 5.4 and Comprehensive Meta-Analysis version 3 software. A total of 7,210 COVID-19 patients from 18 studies were included in the final analysis. Meta-analysis revealed that NAFLD increased the risk of developing poor in-hospital outcome (pooled both severe disease and death) in COVID-19 patients (RR 1.42; 95%CI: 1.17-1.73, p<0.001, I2=84%, random-effect modeling). Subgroup analysis however found that having NAFLD only increased the chance of getting severe COVID-19 (RR 1.67; 95%CI: 1.32-2.13, p<0.001, I2=86%, random-effect modeling) and not mortality (RR 1.00; 95%CI: 0.68-1.47, p=0.98, I2=80%, random-effect modeling). Meta-regression suggested that age (p=0.001) and diabetes (p=0.029) were significantly influenced the relationship between NAFLD and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 (pooled both severe disease and mortality). The weaker association of NAFLD and in-hospital outcomes of COVID-19 was found for studies with median age ≥45 years old (RR 1.29) when compared to studies with median age <45 years old (RR 2.96). In addition, studies with the prevalence of diabetes ≥25% (RR 1.29) had a weaker association with in-hospital outcomes when compared to studies with diabetes prevalence <25% (RR 1.85). In conclusion, NAFLD increased the risk of chance of getting severe COVID-19 and therefore it should be evaluated closely to reduce the chance of getting severe COVID-19.

Abstract
A novel syndrome called long-haul COVID or long COVID is increasingly recognized in a significant percentage of individuals within a few months after infection with SARS-CoV-2. This disorder is characterized by a wide range of persisting, returning or even new but related symptoms that involve different tissues and organs, including respiratory, cardiac, vascular, gastrointestinal, musculo-skeletal, neurological, endocrine and systemic. Some overlapping symptomatologies exist between long COVID and myalgic encephalomyelitis/chronic fatigue syndrome (ME/CFS). Very much like with long ME/CFS, infections with herpes family viruses, immune dysregulation, and the persistence of inflammation have been reported as the most common pattern for the development of long COVID. This review describes several factors and determinants of long COVID that have been proposed, elaborating mainly on viral persistence, reactivation of latent viruses such as Epstein-Barr virus and human herpesvirus 6 which are also associated with the pathology of ME/CFS, viral superantigen activation of the immune system, disturbance in the gut microbiome, and multiple tissue damage and autoimmunity. Based on these factors, we propose diagnostic strategies such as the measurement of IgG and IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, EBV, HHV-6, viral superantigens, gut microbiota, and biomarkers of autoimmunity to better understand and manage this multi-factorial disorder that continues to affect millions of people in the world.

Abstract
Background COVID-19 covers a broad clinical spectrum, threatening global health. Although several studies have investigated various prognostic biochemical and hematological parameters, they generally lack specificity and are insufficient for decision-making. Beyond the neonatal period, NRBCs (nucleated red blood cells) in peripheral blood is rare and often associated with malignant neoplasms, bone marrow diseases, and other severe disorders such as sepsis and hypoxia. Therefore, we investigated if NRBCs can predict mortality in hypoxic ICU (Intensive Care Unit) patients of COVID-19. Methods Seventy-one unvaccinated RT-PCR confirmed COVID-19 ICU patients was divided into those who survived (n=35, mean age=58) and died (n=36, mean age=75). Venous blood samples were collected in K3 EDTA tubes and analyzed on a Sysmex XN-1000 hematology analyzer with semiconductor laser flow cytometry and nucleic acid fluorescence staining method for NRBC analysis. NRBC numbers and percentages of the patients were compared on the first and seventh days of admission to the ICU. Results are reported as a proportion of NRBCs per 100 WBCs NRBCs/100 WBC (NRBC% and as absolute NRBC count (NRBC #, × 109/L). Results NRBC 7th-day count and % values were statistically higher in non-survival ones. The sensitivity for 7th day NRBC value <0.01 (negative) was 86.11%, the specificity was 48.57%, for <0.02; 75.00%, and 77.14%, for <0.03; 61.11%, and 94.60%. Conclusions In conclusion, our results indicate that NRBC elevation (>0.01) significantly predicts mortality in ICU hospitalized patients due to COVID-19. Worse, a high mortality rate is expected, especially with NRBC values of >0.03.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the short-term microvasculature changes of the macula and optic disc following coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Methods This study included 150 eyes (50 eyes of healthy controls and 100 eyes of patients) during the 1st month following COVID-19 recovery, as evidenced by two negative polymerase chain reactions. A complete ophthalmic examination and optical coherence tomography angiography were performed to detect the deep and superficial macular vessel density (VD). In addition, the VD of the optic disc was evaluated. Results Deep VD (DVD) showed a statistically significant decrease in post-COVID-19 patients, particularly those with severe COVID-19. This reduction occurred in the whole image, parafoveal, and perifoveal VD (P = 0.002, P = 0.002, and P < 0.001, respectively). Concerning the superficial VD (SVD), only the superior hemisphere of the whole image density was statistically significantly reduced (P = 0.037). There was no statistically significant difference in foveal VD (both deep and superficial vessel) among the study groups (P = 0.148 and P = 0.322, respectively). Regarding the foveal avascular zone (FAZ), there was no statistically significant among groups (P = 0.548). Regarding the optic disc, the whole image VD and redial peripapillary capillary VD demonstrated a highly significant decrease, particularly in cases of severe COVID-19. Conversely, inside disc VD showed a nonsignificant change among the study groups. Conclusions According to the findings of the current study, retinal microvasculature was affected in the 1st month following recovery from COVID-19. DVD was significantly reduced more than SVD. In addition, peripapillary VD decreased, whereas the FAZ was unaffected.

Abstract
Abnormal immunological indicators associated with disease severity and mortality in patients with COVID-19 have been reported in several observational studies. However, there are marked heterogeneities in patient characteristics and research methodologies in these studies. We aimed to provide an updated synthesis of the association between immune-related indicators and COVID-19 prognosis. We conducted an electronic search of PubMed, Scopus, Ovid, Willey, Web of Science, Cochrane library, and CNKI for studies reporting immunological and/or immune-related parameters, including hematological, inflammatory, coagulation, and biochemical variables, tested on hospital admission of COVID-19 patients with different severities and outcomes. A total of 145 studies were included in the current meta-analysis, with 26 immunological, 11 hematological, 5 inflammatory, 4 coagulation, and 10 biochemical variables reported. Of them, levels of cytokines, including IL-1β, IL-1Ra, IL-2R, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-18, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IgA, IgG, and CD4+ T/CD8+ T cell ratio, WBC, neutrophil, platelet, ESR, CRP, ferritin, SAA, D-dimer, FIB, and LDH were significantly increased in severely ill patients or non-survivors. Moreover, non-severely ill patients or survivors presented significantly higher counts of lymphocytes, monocytes, lymphocyte/monocyte ratio, eosinophils, CD3+ T,CD4+T and CD8+T cells, B cells, and NK cells. The currently updated meta-analysis primarily identified a hypercytokinemia profile with the severity and mortality of COVID-19 containing IL-1β, IL-1Ra, IL-2R, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, IL-10, IL-18, TNF-α, and IFN-γ. Impaired innate and adaptive immune responses, reflected by decreased eosinophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, B cells, NK cells, T cells, and their subtype CD4+ and CD8+ T cells, and augmented inflammation, coagulation dysfunction, and nonpulmonary organ injury, were marked features of patients with poor prognosis. Therefore, parameters of immune response dysfunction combined with inflammatory, coagulated, or nonpulmonary organ injury indicators may be more sensitive to predict severe patients and those non-survivors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Coronavirus disease 2019 is an ongoing disease with high morbidity and mortality. We aimed to investigate the relationship between demographics, lymphocytes, eosinophils, and the coronavirus disease 2019 severity at hospital admission. MATERIAL AND METHODS A retrospective, observational cross-sectional study was carried out with 5828 coronavirus disease 2019 patients between March 11, 2020, and November 30, 2020. Patients were divided into 3 groups according to where they were followed up as an indicator of disease severity, namely outpatients, inpatients, and critically ill patients. The patients' demographics and hemogram values on admission were recorded. The predictive accuracies of lymphocyte count, lymphocyte percentage, eosinophil count, and eosinophil percentage for predicting severity were determined using receiver operating characteristic curves. Logistic regression analysis was used to predict intensive care unit demand according to lymphocyte and eosinophil values. RESULTS Of the 5828 coronavirus disease 2019 patients, 4050 were followed up as outpatients, 1581 were hospitalized in a ward, and 197 were hospitalized in the intensive care unit. Lymphocyte count and lymphocyte percentage were significantly different between the groups, but the difference for eosinophil count and eosinophil percentage was not significant as it was for lymphocytes. Cutoff values for lymphocyte count (1.0 × 109 /L), lymphocyte percentage (22%), eosinophil count (0.052 × 109 /L), and eosinophil percentage (0.08%) were found to indicate a high risk for intensive care unit admission. Coronavirus disease 2019 patients >55 years of age, with a lymphocyte count <1.0 × 109 /L, a lymphocyte percentage <22%, and an eosinophil percentage <0.08% had a 2-fold higher risk of requiring intensive care unit management. CONCLUSION Lymphocyte counts and percentages are quick and reliable biomarkers for predicting coronavirus disease 2019 severity and may guide physicians for proper management earlier.

Abstract
During SARS-CoV-2 infection, eosinopenia may reflect a hyperactive immune response. In this study of hospitalized COVID-19 patients, we aimed to better understand the prognostic value of severe eosinopenia (absolute eosinophil count = 0 G/L) and decipher its underlying mechanisms. We retrospectively analyzed the records of COVID-19 patients hospitalized from March to June 2020 in three university hospitals in Marseille, France. We assessed the association between severe eosinopenia and a composite poor outcome in these patients, including the need for oxygen supplementation at >6 L/min, ICU admission, and in-hospital death. Among the 551 COVID-19 patients included in this study, severe eosinopenia was found in 228 (51%) of them on admission to hospital and was associated with a composite poor outcome using multivariate analysis (OR = 2.58; CI95 [1.77−3.75]; p < 0.0001). We found a significant association between the presence of severe eosinopenia on admission and the elevation in C-reactive protein, ferritin, IP-10, and suPAR. The histological findings in a series of 37 autopsies from patients who died from severe COVID-19 and presented with severe eosinopenia showed no pulmonary eosinophil trapping. Severe eosinopenia can be a reliable biomarker associated with a composite poor outcome in hospitalized COVID-19 adult patients. It may reflect the magnitude of immune hyperactivation during severe-to-critical COVID-19.

Abstract
The emergence of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has affected many countries throughout the world. As urgency is a necessity, most efforts have focused on identifying small molecule drugs that can be repurposed for use as anti-SARS-CoV-2 agents. Although several drug candidates have been identified using in silico method and in vitro studies, most of these drugs require the support of in vivo data before they can be considered for clinical trials. Several drugs are considered promising therapeutic agents for COVID-19. In addition to the direct-acting antiviral drugs, supportive therapies including traditional Chinese medicine, immunotherapies, immunomodulators, and nutritional therapy could contribute a major role in treating COVID-19 patients. Some of these drugs have already been included in the treatment guidelines, recommendations, and standard operating procedures. In this article, we comprehensively review the approved and potential therapeutic drugs, immune cells-based therapies, immunomodulatory agents/drugs, herbs and plant metabolites, nutritional and dietary for COVID-19.

Abstract
Hematological parameters like total leukocyte count (TLC), neutrophil, lymphocyte, and absolute eosinophil counts (AEC), and neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) are known to predict the severity of novel coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients. In the present study, we aimed to study the role of complete blood count parameters in triaging these patients requiring intensive care unit (ICU) admission. A retrospective study was done over a period of 2 months. Patients, who were ≥ 18 years of age with COVID-19 confirmed on SARS-CoV-2 reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and whose routine hematology counts were sent within 24 h of admission, were included in the study. Cut-off values of 47.5 years for age, 11.3 × 109/L for TLC, and 9.1 for NLR were predictive of disease severity among COVID-19 patients. Relative neutrophilia ≥ 70% (p < 0.007), relative lymphopenia ≤ 20% (p < 0.002), AEC ≤ 40/cumm (p < 0.001), and NLR ≥ 9.1 (p < 0.001) were significantly associated with ICU admission. Routine hematological parameters are cost-effective and fast predictive markers for severe COVID-19 patients, especially in resource-constrained health care settings to utilize limited ICU resources more effectively.

Therefore, early diagnosis is essential for critically COVID-19 patients. we aimed to investigate the correlation among D-dimer levels, lymphocyte subsets, cytokines, and disease severity in COVID-19 patients. Methods Systematic review and meta- analysis of PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, Embase, clinical trials, and China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI) until 1 August 2022. We considered case-control, and cohort studies that compared laboratory parameters between patients with severe or non-serious diseases or between survivors and non-survivors. Pooled data was assessed by use of a random-effects model and used I 2 to test heterogeneity. We assessed the risk of bias using the Newcastle- Ottawa Scale. Random-effect results indicated that patients with COVID-19 in severe group had higher levels for D-dimer (WMD = 1.217 mg/L, 95%CI=[0.788, 1.646], P < 0.001), neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) (WMD = 6.939, 95%CI = [4.581, 9.297], P < 0.001), IL-2 (WMD = 0.371 pg/ml, 95%CI = [-0.190, 0.932], P = 0.004), IL-4 (WMD = 0.139 pg/ml, 95%CI = [0.060, 0.219], P = 0.717), IL-6 (WMD = 44.251 pg/ml, 95%CI = [27.010, 61.493], P < 0.001), IL-10 (WMD = 3.718 pg/ml, 95%CI = [2.648, 4.788], P < 0.001) as well as lower levels of lymphocytes (WMD = -0.468( × 109/L), 95%CI = [-0.543, -0.394], P < 0.001), T cells (WMD = -446.746(/μL), 95%CI = [-619.607, -273.885], P < 0.001), B cells (WMD = -60.616(/μL), 95%CI = [-96.452, -24.780], P < 0.001), NK cells (WMD = -68.297(/μL), 95%CI = [-90.600, -45.994], P < 0.001), CD3+T cells (WMD = -487.870(/μL), 95%CI = [-627.248, -348.492], P < 0.001), CD4+T cells (WMD = -290.134(/μL), 95%CI = [-370.834, -209.435], P < 0.001), CD8+T cells (WMD = -188.781(/μL), 95%CI = [-227.806, -149.757], P < 0.001). Conclusions There is a correlation among higher levels of D-dimer, cytokines, lower levels of lymphocyte subsets, and disease severity in COVID-19 patients. Abstract
Background: Tuberculosis, like COVID-19, is most often a pulmonary disease. The COVID-19 pandemic has severely disrupted tuberculosis services in myriad ways: health facility closures, lockdowns, travel bans, overwhelmed healthcare systems, restricted export of antituberculous drugs, etc. The effects of the shared risk on outcomes of the two diseases is not known, particularly for the first year of the pandemic, during the period before COVID-19 vaccines became widely available. Objective: We embarked on a systematic review to elucidate the consequences of tuberculosis on COVID-19 outcomes and of COVID-19 on tuberculosis outcomes during the pre-vaccination period of the pandemic. Methods: The systematic review protocol is registered in PROSPERO. We conducted an initial search of PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, WHO coronavirus database, medRxiv, bioRxiv, preprints.org, and Google Scholar using terms relating to COVID-19 and tuberculosis. We selected cohort and case–control studies for extraction and assessed quality with the Newcastle-Ottawa scale. Results and Conclusion: We identified 2108 unique abstracts published between December 2019 and January 2021. We extracted data from 18 studies from 8 countries. A total of 650,317 persons had a diagnosis of COVID-19, and 4179 had a diagnosis of current or prior tuberculosis. We explored links between tuberculosis and COVID-19 incidence, mortality, and other adverse outcomes. Nine studies reported on mortality and 13 on other adverse outcomes; results on the association between tuberculosis and COVID-19 mortality/adverse outcomes were heterogenous. Tuberculosis outcomes were not fully available in any studies, due to short follow-up (maximum of 3 months after COVID-19 diagnosis), so the effects of COVID-19 on tuberculosis outcomes could not be assessed. Much of the rapid influx of literature on tuberculosis and COVID-19 during this period was published on preprint servers, and therefore not peer-reviewed. It offered limited examination of the effect of tuberculosis on COVID-19 outcomes and even less on the effect of COVID-19 on tuberculosis treatment outcomes.

Abstract
Abstract
Introduction Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a viral infection caused by a novel coronavirus known as the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2). The disease raises an enormous public health challenge for the international community. Liver enzymes have been reported to be frequently elevated in hospitalized patients with severe COVID-19 disease.
Materials and Methods This article is a narrative review of abnormal liver tests and liver injury as a manifestation of progression to severe pneumonia. We collected data from the PubMed database (National Library of Medicine, Bethesda, Maryland, United States). We used the search term “abnormal liver test” and relevant records were measured. The review article was organized thematically.
Results This narrative review aims to summarize the available clinical data on abnormal liver enzymes in coronavirus infection and its association with the risk of mortality, severer pneumonia, and systemic inflammation. Some clinical studies refer to abnormal liver tests and liver injury as a manifestation of progression to severe pneumonia. Recent research verified the relationship between hepatic liver enzyme activities and liver damage in patients with COVID-19, which suggested that it might reflect the infection severity and the mortality risk. Thus, this review investigated the correlation between liver serum enzymes level and the severity of COVID-19 patients, by reviewing investigating the relationship between the illness severity in COVID-19 patients with abnormal liver tests, liver pathology, and markers of inflammation.
Conclusion In the current pandemic of SARS-CoV-2, abnormalities of liver enzyme tests were commonly observed in patients with COVID-19. However, because of multiorgan damages that observed in COVID-19 patients, various issues should be considered such as the pathology and pathophysiology of the liver tissue, especially on the activation process of the immune response and cytokine storm to prevent the severity of the disease.

Abstract
Introduction Pre-existing comorbid conditions in COVID-19 patients are risk factors for developing severe disease and death. We aimed to determine the association of chronic liver disease (CLD), a comorbid condition, with severity of disease and death among COVID-19 patients. Methods We searched for studies reporting COVID-19 outcomes among CLD and non-CLD patients in databases including Medline, EMBASE, ScienceDirect, Google Scholar, and Cochrane Library from inception of the pandemic until February 2022. Risk of bias assessment was conducted by using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale for assessing the quality of nonrandomized studies in meta-analyses. We conducted a meta-analysis with a random-effects model and reported pooled odds ratios (ORs) with 95% CIs. Results We included 40 studies with 908,032 participants. Most studies were conducted in China and the US. COVID-19 patients with CLD had significantly higher odds of having a severe form of COVID-19 (pooled OR = 2.44; 95% CI, 1.89–3.16) and death (pooled OR = 2.35; 95% CI, 1.85–3.00) when compared with COVID-19 patients without CLD. Conclusion The presence of CLD is significantly related to adverse clinical outcomes among COVID-19 patients in terms of severity and mortality. Clinicians should develop a comprehensive intervention plan to manage these high-risk patients and reduce COVID-19–related deaths.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been far more devastating than expected, showing no signs of slowing down at present. Heilongjiang Province is the most northeastern province of China, and has cold weather for nearly half a year and an annual temperature difference of more than 60ºC, which increases the underlying morbidity associated with pulmonary diseases, and thus leads to lung dysfunction. The demographic features and laboratory parameters of COVID-19 deceased patients in Heilongjiang Province, China with such climatic characteristics are still not clearly illustrated.
AIM To illustrate the demographic features and laboratory parameters of COVID-19 deceased patients in Heilongjiang Province by comparing with those of surviving severe and critically ill cases.
METHODS COVID-19 deceased patients from different hospitals in Heilongjiang Province were included in this retrospective study and compared their characteristics with those of surviving severe and critically ill cases in the COVID-19 treatment center of the First Affiliated Hospital of Harbin Medical University. The surviving patients were divided into severe group and critically ill group according to the Diagnosis and Treatment of New Coronavirus Pneumonia (the seventh edition). Demographic data were collected and recorded upon admission. Laboratory parameters were obtained from the medical records, and then compared among the groups.
RESULTS Twelve COVID-19 deceased patients, 27 severe cases and 26 critically ill cases were enrolled in this retrospective study. No differences in age, gender, and number of comorbidities between groups were found. Neutrophil percentage (NEUT%), platelet (PLT), C-reactive protein (CRP), creatine kinase isoenzyme (CK-MB), serum troponin I (TNI) and brain natriuretic peptides (BNP) showed significant differences among the groups (P = 0.020, P = 0.001, P < 0.001, P = 0.001, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). The increase of CRP, D-dimer and NEUT% levels, as well as the decrease of lymphocyte count (LYMPH) and PLT counts, showed significant correlation with death of COVID-19 patients (P = 0.023, P = 0.008, P = 0.045, P = 0.020, P = 0.015, respectively).
CONCLUSION Compared with surviving severe and critically ill cases, no special demographic features of COVID-19 deceased patients were observed, while some laboratory parameters including NEUT%, PLT, CRP, CK-MB, TNI and BNP showed significant differences. COVID-19 deceased patients had higher CRP, D-dimer and NEUT% levels and lower LYMPH and PLT counts.

Abstract
Corona virus disease 2019 (COVID-19) testing relies on traditional screening methods, which require a lot of manpower and material resources. Recently, to effectively reduce the damage caused by radiation and enhance effectiveness, deep learning of classifying COVID-19 negative and positive using the mixed dataset by CT and X-rays images have achieved remarkable research results. However, the details presented on CT and X-ray images have pathological diversity and similarity features, thus increasing the difficulty for physicians to judge specific cases. On this basis, this paper proposes a novel coronavirus pneumonia classification model using the mixed dataset by CT and X-rays images. To solve the problem of feature similarity between lung diseases and COVID-19, the extracted features are enhanced by an adaptive region enhancement algorithm. Besides, the depth network based on the residual blocks and the dense blocks is trained and tested. On the one hand, the residual blocks effectively improve the accuracy of the model and the non-linear COVID-19 features are obtained by cross-layer link. On the other hand, the dense blocks effectively improve the robustness of the model by connecting local and abstract information. On mixed X-ray and CT datasets, the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), area under curve (AUC), and accuracy can all reach 0.99. On the basis of respecting patient privacy and ethics, the proposed algorithm using the mixed dataset from real cases can effectively assist doctors in performing the accurate COVID-19 negative and positive classification to determine the infection status of patients.

Abstract
PROBLEM Starting from November 2019, the world has had to face a devastating pandemic caused by SARS-CoV-2. Various studies have identified potential risk factors facilitating the infection, however it hasn't been demonstrated whether endometriosis might represent one of them. The purpose of this study was to evaluate if patients with endometriosis had a higher risk of contracting COVID-19 infection and, in such case, whether they developed a more severe infection than the general population. Furthermore, this study evaluated the possible correlation with the stage of endometriosis, based on the r-ASRM score, and the potential worsening of the disease during the SARS-CoV-2 infection. METHOD OF STUDY A case-control study was conducted from March 2020 to April 2021 at Macedonio Melloni Hospital, in Milan. A total of 401 women were recruited. The cases were 201 women with clinical or surgical diagnosis of endometriosis. The control group consisted of 200 women, without the disease. All women completed a self-administered questionnaire which evaluated their demographic and clinical characteristics, as well as a potential diagnosis of Covid-19. RESULTS Comparison between the two groups showed that women with endometriosis had a higher frequency of COVID-19 than the control subjects (23% vs 13.5%, P = 0.014), with a greater prevalence of fever (14.4% vs 6%, P = 0.008) and myalgias or arthralgias (11.4% vs 4.5%, P = 0.01). In multivariable logistic regression analyses, women with endometriosis had a higher risk of contracting SARS-CoV-2 infection (OR = 2.11, 95% IC: 1.20-3.80), regardless the stage of the disease. CONCLUSION Endometriosis increases the susceptibility to COVID-19, and women who suffer from it should be considered as fragile patients, worthy of prior access to SARS-CoV-2 vaccination campaign. Abstract
It is believed that many biomarkers and factors could be linked to the prognosis of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Therefore, this study aimed to evaluate the association of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), D-Dimer, vitamin D, and ferritin statuses with the prognosis of COVID-19; moreover, it was attempted to investigate its prevalence according to age, employment status, body mass index (BMI), and place of residency in a population sample of hospitalized patients in Thi-Qar, Iraq. This study evaluated 200 COVID-19 patients and 100 controls. The BMI of all individuals was calculated, and such demographic characteristics as age, gender, place of residency, and occupational status were collected from all participants. Blood samples were taken and used to estimate D-Dimer, LDH, vitamin D, ferritin, oxygen, and pulse rate. The mean age of the patients approached the fifth decade, and 72% of the cases were more than 40 years of age. In addition, 60% of the patients were living in the countryside, and 52% of the participants were employed, compared to only 8% of the cases who were students. The BMI of the patients was obtained at 31.44±10.2 kg/m2; accordingly, 47% and 40% of the cases were obese and overweight, respectively, compared to only 12% of the patients who had normal weight (P˂0.05). There were significantly lower vitamin D levels in the patients; however, the concentrations of LDH, serum ferritin, and D-Dimer were significantly higher in the patients, compared to the control group (P˂0.05). Not only age and body weight but also employment status and place of residency maybe also the important risk factors for COVID-19 distribution. LDH, D-dimer, vitamin D, and ferritin statuses could be used as good biomarkers for this disease and its severity.

Abstract
Objectives Disruption in the natural immune reaction due to SARS-CoV-2 infection can initiate a potent cytokine storm among COVID-19 patients. An elevated level of IL-6 and IL-10 during a hyperinflammatory state plays a vital role in increasing the risk of severity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the potential of circulating IL-6 and IL-10 levels as biomarkers for detecting the severity and mortality of COVID-19. Methods This study was conducted according to the Cochrane Handbook and PRISMA guidelines. Authorized databases were searched to extract suitable studies using specific search terms. RevMan 5.4 was applied for performing the meta-analysis. Mean differences in IL-6 and IL-10 levels were calculated among COVID-19 patients via a random-effects model. NOS scoring, publication bias and sensitivity analyses were checked to ensure study quality. Results A total of 147 studies were selected, with 31 909 COVID-19 patients under investigation. In the severity analysis, the mean concentration of IL-6 was significantly higher in the severe COVID-19 cases than in the non-severe cases (MD: 19.98; P < .001; 95% CI: 17.56, 22.40). Similar result was observed for IL-10 mean concentration in severe COVID-19 cases (MD: 1.35; P < .001; 95% CI: 0.90, 1.80). In terms of mortality analysis, circulating IL-6 showed sharp elevation in the deceased patients (MD: 42.11; P < .001; 95% CI: 36.86, 47.36). IL-10 mean concentration was higher in the dead patients than in the survived patients (MD: 4.79; P < .001; 95% CI: 2.83, 6.75). Publication bias was not found except for comparing IL-6 levels with disease severity. Sensitivity analysis also reported no significant deviation from the pooled outcomes. Conclusions Elevated levels of circulating IL-6 and IL-10 signifies worsening of COVID-19. To monitor the progression of SARS-CoV-2 infection, IL-6 and IL-10 should be considered as potential biomarkers for severity and mortality detection in COVID-19. Abstract
BACKGROUND In late 2019, a novel coronavirus was detected in Wuhan, China, that caused a pandemic by September 2021, resulting in 224,180,411 cases and more than 4,600,000 deaths worldwide. In response to the pandemic, the Autonomous Kurdistan Regional Government of Iraq (KRG) imposed strict infection control measures at its borders for all travelers from neighboring countries, wherein each traveler was subjected to a mandatory reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test on arrival to detect severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infected travelers. The aim of this study is to determine the rate of infection with SARS-CoV-2 among the travelers entering Kurdistan region through Ibrahim Al-Khalil crossing point with Turkey as a predictor for the upcoming infection waves. METHODS The data of RT-PCR tests to detect SARS-CoV-2 in all travelers arriving at the Ibrahim Al-Khalil Border Crossing between Iraq and the Republic of Turkey were reviewed from August 21, 2020 to August 21, 2021. RESULTS It was found that there were 9873 cases of SARS-CoV-2 infections among 1,082,074 travelers during the study period. CONCLUSIONS This study shows the importance of mass testing of travelers at border crossings to control the spread of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Abstract
In our continuing examination of the role of exposomes in autoimmune disease, we use this review to focus on pathogens. Infections are major contributors to the pathophysiology of autoimmune diseases through various mechanisms, foremost being molecular mimicry, when the structural similarity between the pathogen and a human tissue antigen leads to autoimmune reactivity and even autoimmune disease. The three best examples of this are oral pathogens, SARS-CoV-2, and the herpesviruses. Oral pathogens reach the gut, disturb the microbiota, increase gut permeability, cause local inflammation, and generate autoantigens, leading to systemic inflammation, multiple autoimmune reactivities, and systemic autoimmunity. The COVID-19 pandemic put the spotlight on SARS-CoV-2, which has been called “the autoimmune virus.” We explore in detail the evidence supporting this. We also describe how viruses, in particular herpesviruses, have a role in the induction of many different autoimmune diseases, detailing the various mechanisms involved. Lastly, we discuss the microbiome and the beneficial microbiota that populate it. We look at the role of the gut microbiome in autoimmune disorders, because of its role in regulating the immune system. Dysbiosis of the microbiota in the gut microbiome can lead to multiple autoimmune disorders. We conclude that understanding the precise roles and relationships shared by all these factors that comprise the exposome and identifying early events and root causes of these disorders can help us to develop more targeted therapeutic protocols for the management of this worldwide epidemic of autoimmunity.

Abstract
Background At the beginning of the pandemic, there have been considerable concerns regarding coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) severity and outcomes in patients with severe asthma treated with biologics. Objective To prospectively observe a cohort of severe asthmatics treated with biologics for the risk of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and disease severity during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods Physicians from centers treating patients with severe asthma all over Greece provided demographic and medical data regarding their patients treated with biologics. Physicians were also asked to follow up patients during the pandemic and to perform a polymerase chain reaction test in case of a suspected SARS-Cov-2 infection. Results Among the 591 severe asthmatics (63.5% female) included in the study, 219 (37.1%) were treated with omalizumab, 358 (60.6%) with mepolizumab, and 14 (2.4%) with benralizumab. In total, 26 patients (4.4%) had a confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, 9 (34.6%) of whom were admitted to the hospital because of severe COVID-19, and 1 required mechanical ventilation and died 19 days after admission. Of the 26 infected patients, 5 (19.2%) experienced asthma control deterioration, characterized as exacerbation that required treatment with systemic corticosteroids. The scheduled administration of the biological therapy was performed timely in all patients with the exception of 2, in whom it was postponed for 1 week according to their doctors’ suggestion. Conclusion Our study confirms that despite the initial concerns, SARS-CoV-2 infection is not more common in asthmatics treated with biologics compared with the general population, whereas the use of biologic treatments for severe asthma during the COVID-19 pandemic does not seem to be related to adverse outcomes from severe COVID-19.

Abstract
BACKGROUND: Early identification of clinical outcomes is necessary for risk classification in COVID-19 patients. This study help in evaluating the progression of the disease and the patient’s therapy.
AIM: This study aims to determine serum ferritin levels for the prediction of mortality among COVID-19 patients in an Indonesia’s National Referral Hospital.
METHODS: A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 142 confirmed positive COVID-19 patients between March 2020 until March 2021 at Dr. M. Djamil General Hospital as a National Referral Hospital in Indonesia. Data obtained from medical record documents and examination of ferritin levels was carried out at the beginning of treatment. The Chi-square test and survival analysis with the log-rank test and Kaplan–Meier methods were used to analyze the data. The SPSS version 15 was used to analyze the data.
RESULTS: The serum ferritin cutoff point for COVID-19 patients that can be used to predict poor outcomes was >651.02 ng/mL with sensitivity 79.3%, specificity 80.5%, and accuracy 85.0%. Age, comorbid diabetes mellitus, number of comorbidities, symptoms of trouble breathing, oxygen saturation, severity, and mortality outcome were all associated to ferritin levels >651.02 ng/mL. The Kaplan–Meier curve showed that ferritin levels >651.02 ng/mL were associated for risk of poor outcome COVID-19 patients (HR = 8.84, [95% CI 3.59–21.73]).
CONCLUSION: The ferritin cutoff point for predicting poor prognosis in COVID-19 patients was 651.02 ng/mL. However, ferritin serum levels cannot be used as a single predictor in determining the poor outcome of COVID-19.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE As COVID-19 spreads across the world, there are concerns that people with asthma are at a higher risk of acquiring the disease, or of poorer outcomes. This systematic review aimed to summarize evidence on the risk of infection, severe illness and death from COVID-19 in people with asthma. DATA SOURCES AND STUDY SELECTION A comprehensive search of electronic databases including preprint repositories and WHO COVID-19 database was conducted (until 26 May 2020). Studies reporting COVID-19 in people with asthma were included. For binary outcomes, we performed Sidik-Jonkman random effects meta-analysis. We explored quantitative heterogeneity by subgroup analyses, meta regression and evaluating the I2 statistic. RESULTS Fifty-seven studies with an overall sample size of 587 280 were included. The prevalence of asthma among those infected with COVID-19 was 7.46% (95% CI = 6.25-8.67). Non-severe asthma was more common than severe asthma (9.61% vs. 4.13%). Pooled analysis showed a 14% risk ratio reduction in acquiring COVID-19 (95% CI = 0.80-0.94; p < 0.0001) and 13% reduction in hospitalization with COVID-19 (95% CI = 0.77-0.99, p = 0.03) for people with asthma compared with those without. There was no significant difference in the combined risk of requiring admission to ICU and/or receiving mechanical ventilation for people with asthma (RR = 0.87 95% CI = 0.94-1.37; p = 0.19) and risk of death from COVID-19 (RR = 0.87; 95% CI = 0.68-1.10; p = 0.25). CONCLUSION The findings from this study suggest that the prevalence of people with asthma among COVID-19 patients is similar to the global prevalence of asthma. The overall findings suggest that people with asthma have a lower risk than those without asthma for acquiring COVID-19 and have similar clinical outcomes.

Abstract
Background. To investigate the association between interleukins (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10) and the disease severity of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Materials and Methods. We systematically searched records investigating the role of interleukins (IL-1β, IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10) in COVID-19 patients in Web of Science, Pubmed, and Embase through December 2020. Data were extracted and pooled, and the weighted mean difference (WMD) and its 95% confidence interval (CI) were calculated. The funnel plot and the nonparametric trim and fill method were used to visualize and adjust the publication bias. Results. In total, 61 studies enrolled 14,136 subjects (14,041 patients and 95 healthy subjects) were enrolled in this meta-analysis. Our results showed that serum IL-2, IL-4, IL-6, and IL-10 levels were elevated in COVID-19 patients compared to healthy controls, and IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 levels were increased in severe COVID-19 cases compared to nonsevere patients. Additionally, the levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 were elevated in nonsurvivor patients compared to survivors. For patients in the intensive care unit (ICU), IL-6 and IL-8 levels were increased than that in non-ICU patients. Conclusions. Elevated levels of IL-6, IL-8, and IL-10 were associated with the disease severity of COVID-19, and elevated levels of IL-1β, IL-6, and IL-8 were related to the prognosis of COVID-19 patients, which could be used to evaluate COVID-19 patients’ disease severity and prognosis.

Abstract
Hyaluronan (HA) is a polysaccharide found in all tissues as an integral component of the extracellular matrix (ECM) that plays a central regulatory role in inflammation. In fact, HA matrices are increasingly considered as a barometer of inflammation. A number of proteins specifically recognize the HA structure and these interactions modify cell behavior and control the stability of the ECM. Moreover, inflamed airways are remarkably rich with HA and are associated with various inflammatory diseases including cystic fibrosis, influenza, sepsis, and more recently coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). COVID-19 is a worldwide pandemic caused by a novel coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2, and infected individuals have a wide range of disease manifestations ranging from asymptomatic to severe illness. Critically ill COVID-19 patient cases are frequently complicated by development of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), which typically leads to poor outcomes with high mortality rate. In general, ARDS is characterized by poor oxygenation accompanied with severe lung inflammation, damage, and vascular leakage and has been suggested to be linked to an accumulation of HA within the airways. Here, we provide a succinct overview of known inflammatory mechanisms regulated by HA in general, and those both observed and postulated in critically ill patients with COVID-19.

Abstract
Background SARS-CoV-2 is highly contagious and poses a great threat to epidemic control and prevention. The possibility of fecal-oral transmission has attracted increasing concern. However, viral shedding in feces has not been completely investigated. Methods This study retrospectively reviewed 97 confirmed coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) patients hospitalized at the First Affiliated Hospital, School of Medicine, Zhejiang University, from January 19 to February 17, 2020. SARS-CoV-2 RNA in samples of sputum, nasopharyngeal or throat swabs, bronchoalveolar lavage and feces was detected by real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT–PCR). Clinical characteristics and parameters were compared between groups to determine whether fecal RNA was positive. Results Thirty-four (35.1%) of the patients showed detectable SARS-CoV-2 RNA in feces, and 63 (64.9%) had negative detection results. The median time of viral shedding in feces was approximately 25 days, with the maximum time reaching 33 days. Prolonged fecal-shedding patients showed longer hospital stays. Those patients for whom fecal viral positivity persisted longer than 3 weeks also had lower plasma B-cell counts than those patients in the non-prolonged group [70.5 (47.3-121.5) per μL vs. 186.5 (129.3-376.0) per μL, P = 0.023]. Correlation analysis found that the duration of fecal shedding was positively related to the duration of respiratory viral shedding (R = 0.70, P < 0.001) and negatively related to peripheral B-cell counts (R = -0.44, P < 0.05). Conclusions COVID-19 patients who shed SARS-CoV-2 RNA in feces presented similar clinical characteristics and outcomes as those who did not shed SARS-CoV-2 RNA in feces. The prolonged presence of SARS-CoV-2 nucleic acids in feces was highly correlated with the prolonged shedding of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in the respiratory tract and with lower plasma B-cell counts.

Abstract
Dysregulation of one-carbon metabolism affects a wide range of biological processes and is associated with a number of diseases, including cardiovascular disease, dementia, neural tube defects, and cancer. Accumulating evidence suggests that one-carbon metabolism plays an important role in COVID-19. The symptoms of long COVID-19 are similar to those presented by subjects suffering from vitamin B12 deficiency (pernicious anemia). The metabolism of a cell infected by the SARS-CoV-2 virus is reshaped to fulfill the need for massive viral RNA synthesis, which requires de novo purine biosynthesis involving folate and one-carbon metabolism. Many aspects of host sulfur amino acid metabolism, particularly glutathione metabolism underlying antioxidant defenses, are also taken over by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. The purpose of this review is to summarize recent findings related to one-carbon metabolism and sulfur metabolites in COVID-19 and discuss how they inform strategies to combat the disease.

Abstract
Since COVID-19 has affected global public health, there has been an urgency to find a solution to limit both the number of infections, and the aggressiveness of the disease once infected. The main characteristic of this infection is represented by a strong alteration of the immune system which, day by day, increases the risk of mortality, and can lead to a multiorgan dysfunction. Because nutritional profile can influence patient’s immunity, we focus our interest on resveratrol, a polyphenolic compound known for its immunomodulating and anti-inflammatory properties. We reviewed all the information concerning the different roles of resveratrol in COVID-19 pathophysiology using PubMed and Scopus as the main databases. Interestingly, we find out that resveratrol may exert its role through different mechanisms. In fact, it has antiviral activity inhibiting virus entrance in cells and viral replication. Resveratrol also improves autophagy and decreases pro-inflammatory agents expression acting as an anti-inflammatory agent. It regulates immune cell response and pro-inflammatory cytokines and prevents the onset of thrombotic events that usually occur in COVID-19 patients. Since resveratrol acts through different mechanisms, the effect could be enhanced, making a totally natural agent particularly effective as an adjuvant in anti COVID-19 therapy.

Abstract
COVID-19 disease began to spread all around the world in December 2019 until now; and in the early stage it may be related to high D-dimer level that indicates coagulation pathways and thrombosis activation that can be affected by some underlying diseases including diabetes, stroke, cancer, and pregnancy and it also can be associated with Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The aim of this article was to analyze D-dimer levels in COVID-19 patients, as D-dimer level is one of the measures to detect the severity and outcomes of COVID-19. According to the results of this study, there is a higher level of D-dimer as well as concentrations of fibrinogen in the disease onset and it seems that the poor prognosis is linked to a 3 to 4-fold increase in D-dimer levels. It is also shown that 76% of the patients with ≥1 D-dimer measurement, had elevated D-dimer and were more likely to have critical illness than those with normal D-dimer. There was an increase in the rates of adverse outcomes with higher D-dimer of more than 2000 ng/mL and it is associated with the highest risk of death at 47%, thrombotic event at 37.8%, and critical illness at 66%. It also found that diabetes and COPD had the strongest association with death in COVID-19. So, it is necessary to measure the D-dimer levels and parameters of coagulation from the beginning as well as pay attention to comorbidities that can help control and management of COVID-19 disease.

Abstract
Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection has caused a global pandemic since late 2019 that resulted in more than 360 million population infection. Among them, less than 7% of infected individuals develop severe or critical illness. Mass vaccination has been carried out, but reinfection and vaccine breakthrough cases still occur. Besides supportive and antiviral medications, much attention has been paid in immunotherapies that aim at reducing pathological changes in the lungs. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) is used as an option because of their immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. As of January 16, 2022, when ClinicalTrials.gov was searched for "Mesenchymal stem cells and COVID-19," over 80 clinical trials were registered. MSC therapy was found to be safe and some effective in preclinical and clinical studies. Here, we summarize the major pathological characteristics of COVID-19 and provide scientific and rational evidence for the safety and possible effectiveness of MSCs in COVID-19 treatment.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Determining the profile of COVID-19 patients with low pulsed hemoglobin saturation in oxygen (SpO2) could help clinicians identify those with a poor prognosis. AIM To identify and to compare the clinical, biological and radiological data of Algerian patients hospitalized for COVID-19 and divided according to the SpO2 measured at admission, at rest, and in ambient air. METHODS A prospective study was carried out on Algerian patients hospitalized for COVID-19 during the period from March 9 to April 30, 2020. The general characteristics of the patients and the clinical, biological and radiological data were determined. RESULTS 86 patients were included in the study [G1: SpO2 >95% (n=51) and G2: SpO2 ≤95% (n=35)]. Compared to G1, G2 was older (48±14 vs. 61±12 years, p=0.0001), included more patients aged ≥ 50 years (37.2 vs. 80.0%, p=0.0001), having an arterial-hypertension (21.6 vs. 45.7%, p=0.0180), a cancer (0.0 vs. 14.3%, p=0.0054), an anemia (25.6 vs. 56.3%, p=0.0069), a leukocytosis (4.7 vs. 21.9%, p=0.0236), a biological inflammatory syndrome (82.5 vs. 100%, p=0.0142), a hyper-uremia (7.0 vs. 37.5%, p=0.0185), a hyper-creatininaemia (4.7 vs. 18.8%, p=0.0356), a tissue damage (41.0 vs. 66.7%, p=0.0341), a diffuse ground-glass opacity (52.0 vs. 71.4%, p=0.0397), band condensations (30.0 vs. 54.3%, p=0.0244), a severe extension (2.0 vs. 25.7%, p=0.0008), and included fewer patients who complained from diarrhea (49.0 vs. 22.9%, p=0.0145), having a nodular ground-glass (66.0 vs. 40.0%, p=0.0177) and a slight extension (78.0 vs. 40.0%, p=0.0004). CONCLUSION Criteria associated with low SpO2 in hospitalized COVID-19 patients were advanced age, a history of arterial-hypertension and cancer, high frequencies of certain biological abnormalities or radiological signs. The diarrhea symptom, the radiological appearance of nodular ground glass, and a slight extension of the radiological lesions appear as protective elements.

Abstract
Background: Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-2019), caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has become a worldwide epidemic and claimed millions of lives. Accumulating evidence suggests that cytokines storms are closely associated to COVID-19 severity and death. Here, we aimed to explore the key factors related to COVID-19 severity and death, especially in terms of the male patients and those in western countries. Methods: To clarify whether inflammatory cytokines have role in COVID-19 severity and death, we systematically searched PubMed, Embase, Cochrane library and Web of Science to identify related studies with the keywords “COVID-19″ and “cytokines”. The data were measured as the mean with 95% confidence interval (CI) by Review Manager 5.3 software. The risk of bias was assessed for each study using appropriate checklists. Results: We preliminarily screened 13,468 studies from the databases. A total of 77 articles with 13,468 patients were ultimately included in our study. The serum levels of cytokines such as interleukin-6 (IL-6), IL-10, interleukin-2 receptor (IL-2R), tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-8 and IL-17 were higher in the severity or death group. Notably, we also found that the circulating levels of IL-6, IL-10, IL-2R and TNF-α were significantly different between males and females. The serum levels of IL-6, IL-10, IL-2R and TNF-α were much higher in males than in females, which implies that the increased mortality and severity in males was partly due to the higher level of these cytokines. Moreover, we found that in the severe and non-survivor groups, European patients had elevated levels of IL-6 compared with Asian patients. Conclusion: These large-scale data demonstrated that the circulating levels of IL-6, IL-10, IL-2R, IL-1β, IL-4, IL-8 and IL-17 are potential risk factors for severity and high mortality in COVID-19. Simultaneously, the upregulation of these cytokines may be driving factors for the sex and region predisposition.

Abstract
The novel Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2), the causative agent of COVID-19 outbreak, spread rapidly and infected more than 140 million people with more than three million victims worldwide. The SARS-CoV-2 causes destructive changes in the immunological and hematological system of the host. These alterations appear to play a critical role in disease pathology and the emerging of clinical manifestations. In this review, we aimed to discuss the effect of COVID-19 on the count, function and morphology of immune and blood cells and the role of these changes in the pathophysiology of the disease. Knowledge of these changes may help with better management and treatment of COVID-19 patients.

Abstract
During the critical early stages of an emerging pandemic, limited availability of pathogen-specific testing can severely inhibit individualized risk screening and pandemic tracking. Standard clinical laboratory tests offer a widely available complementary data source for first-line risk screening and pandemic surveillance. Here, we propose an integrated framework for developing clinical-laboratory indicators for novel pandemics that combines population-level and individual-level analyses. We apply this framework to 7,520,834 clinical laboratory tests recorded over five years and find clinical-lab-test combinations that are strongly associated with SARS-CoV-2 PCR test results and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children (MIS-C) diagnoses: Interleukin-related tests (e.g. IL4, IL10) were most strongly associated with SARS-CoV-2 infection and MIS-C, while other more widely available tests (ferritin, D-dimer, fibrinogen, alanine transaminase, and C-reactive protein) also had strong associations. When novel pandemics emerge, this framework can be used to identify specific combinations of clinical laboratory tests for public health tracking and first-line individualized risk screening.

Abstract
BACKGROUND In 2019, there was a global outbreak of new coronary pneumonia. Studies have found that the severity of patients with new coronary pneumonia may be related to their comorbidities. This article discusses the impact of thyroid disease on the severity of new coronary pneumonia through a meta-analysis and provides new treatment ideas for the later treatment and recovery of new coronary pneumonia. METHODS Databases including PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, SINOMED, China national knowledge infrastructure (CNKI), and Wanfang for coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) infection and thyroid diseases were searched. Reference lists of all eligible articles and related previous review articles were handsearched. Fifty-three articles were included to conduct the meta-analysis. RESULTS Fifty-three articles with 12,022 COVID-19 infection patients were included in this meta-analysis. The proportion of patients with thyroid diseases in all COVID-19 infection patients fluctuates between 0% and 88.46%. Of the 53 included studies, 22 studies reported the severity of COVID-19 infection and grouped. The fixed-effects model was used to merge odds ratio (OR) values, and the pooled effect size in favor of non-severe patients is 2.62 (95% CI = 1.96-3.49, P < 0.0001), which means that patients with severe COVID-19 infection are more likely to have thyroid diseases. The analysis subgrouped into Asia and Europe shows that patients with COVID-19 severe infection in Asia are 3.77 times more likely to have thyroid diseases than non-severe patients (fixed-effects model: OR = 3.77, 95% CI = 2.66-5.35, P < 0.00001). No significant statistical heterogeneity was found by the heterogeneity analysis (chi-square = 19.85, P = 0.34, I 2 = 9%). Severe COVID-19 infection patients are more likely to be complicated by hypothyroidism and low T3 syndrome. The pooled ORs with fixed-effects model are 3.72 (95% CI = 1.62-8.58, P = 0.002) and 5.86 (95% CI = 2.79-12.33, P < 0.00001), respectively. CONCLUSION COVID-19 infection patients with thyroid diseases are very common, and severe patients are more likely to have thyroid diseases. Asian COVID-19 infection, hypothyroidism patients, and patients with low T3 syndrome are more likely to progress to severe condition. Abstract
In December 2019, when the whole world is waiting for Christmas and New Year, the physicians of Wuhan, China, are astounded by clusters of patients suffering from pneumonia from unknown causes. The pathogen isolated from the respiratory epithelium of the patients is similar to previously known coronaviruses with some distinct features. The disease was initially called nCoV-2019 or SARS-nCoV-2 and later termed as COVID-19 by WHO. The infection is rapidly propagating from the day of emergence, spread throughout the globe and now became a pandemic which challenged the competencies of developed nations in terms of health care management. As per WHO report, 216 countries are affected with SARS-CoV-19 by August 5, 2020 with 18, 142, 718 confirmed cases and 691,013 deaths reports. Such huge mortality and morbidity rates are truly threatening and calls for some aggressive and effective measures to slow down the disease transmission. The scientists are constantly engaged in finding a potential solution to diagnose and treat the pandemic. Various FDA approved drugs with the previous history of antiviral potency are repurposed for COVID-19 treatment. Different drugs and vaccines are under clinical trials and some rapid and effective diagnostic tools are also under development. In this review, we have highlighted the current epidemiology through infographics, disease transmission and progression, clinical features and diagnosis and possible therapeutic approaches for COVID-19. The article mainly focused on the development and possible application of various FDA approved drugs, including chloroquine, remdesivir, favipiravir, nefamostate mesylate, penciclovir, nitazoxanide, ribavirin etc., vaccines under development and various registered clinical trials exploring different therapeutic measures for the treatment of COVID-19. This information will definitely help the researchers to understand the in-line scientific progress by various clinical agencies and regulatory bodies against COVID-19.
