Occurrence and distribution of emerging contaminants in wastewater treatment plants: A globally review over the past two decades

Emerging contaminants are pervasive in aquatic environments globally, encompassing pharmaceuticals, personal care products, steroid hormones, phenols, biocides, disinfectants and various other compounds. Concentrations of these contaminants are detected ranging from ng/L to μg/L. Even at trace levels, these contaminants can pose significant risks to ecosystems and human health. This article systematically summarises and categorizes data on the concentrations of 54 common emerging contaminants found in the influent and effluent of wastewater treatment plants across various geographical regions: North America, Europe, Oceania, Africa, and Asia. It reviews the occurrence and distribution of these contaminants, providing spatial and causal analyses based on data from these regions. Notably, the maximum concentrations of the pollutants observed vary significantly across different regions. The data from Africa, in particular, show more frequent detection of pharmaceutical maxima in wastewater treatment plants.

Wastewater reuse and pharmaceutical pollution in agriculture: Uptake, transport, accumulation and metabolism of pharmaceutical pollutants within plants

The presence of pharmaceutical pollutants in water sources has become a growing concern due to its potential impacts on human health and other organisms. The physicochemical properties of pharmaceuticals based on their intended therapeutical application, which include antibiotics, hormones, analgesics, and antidepressants, is quite diverse. Their presence in wastewater, sewerage water, surface water, ground water and even in drinking water is reported by many researchers throughout the world. Human exposure to these pollutants through drinking water or consumption of aquatic and terrestrial organisms has raised concerns about potential adverse effects, such as endocrine disruption, antibiotic resistance, and developmental abnormalities. Once in the environment, they can persist, undergo transformation, or degrade, leading to a complex mixture of contaminants. Application of treated wastewater, compost, manures or biosolids in agricultural fields introduce pharmaceutical pollutants in the environment. As pharmaceuticals are diverse in nature, significant differences are observed during their uptake and accumulation in plants. While there have been extensive studies on aquatic ecosystems, the effect on agricultural land is more disparate. As of now, there are few reports available on the potential of plant uptake and transportation of pharmaceuticals within and between plant organs. This review summarizes the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in aquatic water bodies at a range of concentrations and their uptake, accumulation, and transport within plant tissues. Research gaps on pharmaceutical pollutants' specific effect on plant growth and future research scopes are highlighted. The factors affecting uptake of pharmaceuticals including hydrophobicity, ionization, physicochemical properties (pKa, logKow, pH, Henry's law constant) are discussed. Finally, metabolism of pharmaceuticals within plant cells through metabolism phase enzymes and plant responses to pharmaceuticals are reviewed.

Efficacy of anthocyanin, kaolinite and cabbage leaves-derived biochar for simultaneous removal of lead, copper and metoprolol from water

Simultaneous removal of toxic elements and pharmaceutical compounds at environmentally relevant concentrations in aqueous solution is challenging. Modification of biochar using environmental materials has attracted significant attention in wastewater treatment, while pristine biochar has several limitations in the simultaneous removal of Lead (Pb2+), Copper (Cu2+), and metoprolol. We investigated the efficacy of biochar composites using waste cabbage leaves-derived biochar with kaolinite, and anthocyanin for simultaneous removal of Pb2+, Cu2+, and metoprolol from water. Using ball milling, the surface area and functional groups of adsorbents were improved via breaking the biochar grains into ultrafine particles. Ball-milled biochar derived from waste cabbage leaves significantly increased Pb2+, Cu2+, and metoprolol adsorption by 105, 71, and 213%, respectively. Results of Brunauer Emmett Teller surface area, Fourier transform infrared and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopies showed that surface area of non-milled biochar improved nearly ten-fold following ball-milling, while several oxygen containing acidic functional groups also increased. The adsorbents resulted in high removal efficiency for Pb2+ (162.9 mg/g) and Cu2+ (48.5 mg/g) in ball milled-kaolinite composite biochar (BMKB) and 76.3 mg/g (metoprolol), respectively in ball milled-anthocyanin composite biochar (BMAB). The simultaneous sorption of Pb2+, Cu2+, and metoprolol in an aqueous solution to BMAB and BMKB, showed that the adsorption capacity followed the order of Pb2+ >Cu2+ > metoprolol in both types of ball-milled biochars. BMKB achieved a high adsorption capacity for Pb2+ and Cu2+ (59 mg/g and 50 mg/g), respectively, while BMAB exhibited an adsorption capacity 22.3 mg/g for metoprolol. It was postulated that sorption of Pb2+, Cu2+ and metoprolol involved multiple adsorption mechanisms namely surface complexation, π-π interaction, H-bond, pore filling, and ion bridging. The findings of this study revealed that ball milling is a potential technology in producing a highlyefficient adsorbent to remediate multi-contaminants in aqueous solution.

The enhanced photocatalytic performance of CPAA doping with different concentrations of Titanium oxide nanocomposite against MB dyes under simulated sunlight irradiations

The pure conjugated polyarylene azomethine (CPAA) and its nanocomposites (CPAA-TiO2) with different concentrations of TiO2 nanoparticles were successfully prepared by in-situ technique and analyzed by different advanced techniques. XRD has confirmed the structural properties and crystallinity of (CPAA) and nanocomposites. The SEM clearly shows that the (CPAA) is uniform and homogeneous, with tightly connected aggregate layers in shape. However, the amount of TiO2 in the nanocomposites greatly affects their morphology, revealing structural differences and indicating a reaction between (CPAA) and TiO2, especially at a higher concentration of 5% TiO2. A new composite of (CPAA) was introduced and the photocatalytic effect for MB was studied. The removal efficiency of (pure-CPAA) over MB dye under simulated sunlight was 62%. However, (CPAA-TiO2 1%) destroyed 90% of MB dyes. It was discovered that the low band gap of (CPAA-TiO2 1% (2.84 eV)) accelerates high electron-hole recombination, increasing photocatalytic activity.

Hydroxylated transformation products of pharmaceutical active compounds: Generation from processes used in wastewater treatment plants and its environmental monitoring

Pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) are organic pollutants detected in wastewater and aquatic environments worldwide in concentrations ranging from ng L-1 to μg L-1. Wastewater effluents containing PhACs residues is discharged in municipal sewage and, subsequently collected in municipal wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) where are not entirely removed. Thus, PhACs and its transformation products (TPs) are discharged into water bodies. In the current work, the transformation of PhACs under treatments used in municipal WWTPs such as biological, photolysis, chlorination, and ozonation processes was reviewed. Data set of the major transformation pathways were obtained of studies that performed the PhACs removal and TPs monitoring during batch-scale experiments using gas and liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (GC/LC-MS/MS). Several transformation pathways as dealkylation, hydroxylation, oxidation, acetylation, aromatic ring opening, chlorination, dehalogenation, photo-substitution, and ozone attack reactions were identified during the transformation of PhACs. Especially, hydroxylation reaction was identified as transformation pathway in all the processes. During the elucidation of hydroxylated TPs several isobaric compounds as monohydroxylated and dihydroxylated were identified. However, hydroxylated TPs monitoring in wastewater and aquatic environments is a topic scarcely studied due to that has no environmental significance, lack of available analytic standars of hydroxylated TPs and lack of analytic methods for their identification. Thus, screening strategy for environmental monitoring of hydroxylated TPs was proposed through target and suspect screening using GC/LC-MS/MS systems. In the next years, more studies on the hydroxylated TPs monitoring are necessary for its detection in WWTPs effluents as well as studies on their environmental effects in aquatic environments.

Microplastics aggravate the bioaccumulation and corresponding food safety risk of antibiotics in edible bivalves by constraining detoxification-related processes

Characterized by a sessile filter-feeding lifestyle, commercial marine bivalves inhabiting pollution-prone coastal areas may accumulate significant amounts of pollutants, such as antibiotic residues, in their soft tissues and thus pose a potential threat to the health of seafood consumers. Microplastics are another type of emerging pollutant that are prevalent in coastal areas and have been reported to interact with common antibiotics such as enrofloxacin (ENR) and trimethoprim (TMP). Nevertheless, little is known about the impacts of MPs on the accumulation and corresponding food safety risk of antibiotics in edible bivalve species. Taking the frequently detected ENR, TMP, and polystyrene (PS)-MPs as representatives, the accumulation of above-mentioned antibiotics in three commercial bivalves with or without the copresence of MPs was assessed. In addition, the corresponding food safety risks of consuming antibiotic-contaminated bivalves were evaluated. Moreover, the impacts of these pollutants on detoxification-related processes were analyzed using the thick-shell mussel as a representative. Our results demonstrated that blood clams (Tegillarca granosa), thick-shell mussels (Mytilus coruscus), and Asiatic hard clams (Meretrix meretrix) accumulated significantly higher amounts of antibiotics in their bodies under antibiotic-MP coexposure scenarios. Although based on the target hazard quotients (THQs) and the margins of exposure (MoEs) obtained, the direct toxic risks of consuming ENR- or TMP-contaminated bivalves were negligible, the TMP residue accumulated in TMP-MP-coexposed mussels did surpass the maximum residue limits (MRLs) of the corresponding National Food Safety Standard of China, suggesting that other forms of potential risks should not be ignored. In addition, it was shown that the detoxification, energy provision, and antioxidant capacities of the thick-shell mussels were significantly hampered by exposure to the pollutants. In general, our data indicate that MPs may aggravate the accumulation and corresponding food safety risk of antibiotics in edible bivalves by disrupting detoxification-related processes, which deserves closer attention.

Impact of pharmaceutical industry wastewater on stress physiological responses of Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleiden

Impact of pharmaceutical wastewater collected from aeration tank on aquatic macrophyte Spirodela polyrhiza (L.) Schleiden was studied in the present study. Various plant parameters such as chlorophyll, protein, and proline content of wastewater-exposed plants were examined to determine the toxic impacts of pharmaceutical wastewater. In addition to these parameters, electrolyte leakage (EL) and catalase (CAT) activities in S. polyrhiza were assessed for each day of exposure to the wastewater. S. polyrhiza was exposed to four different wastewater concentrations (25%, 50%, 75%, and 100%) under laboratory conditions for 7 days. The plants experienced severe toxicity as revealed by the reduction in photosynthetic pigments, increase in electrolyte leakage, and enhancement of antioxidant enzyme (CAT) activity in S. polyrhiza with an increase in concentration and time of exposure to pharmaceutical effluent.

Various species of Basidiomycota fungi reveal different abilities to degrade pharmaceuticals and also different pathways of degradation

The presence of pharmaceuticals (PhACs) in the aquatic environment is an emerging problem worldwide. PhACs reach surface water via the effluents of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). WWTPs, although able to remove organic pollutants, do not always remove PhACs. Currently, in the treatment of sewage with the activated sludge method, numerous microorganisms are used, mostly bacteria. Nevertheless, these microorganisms are not resistant to many drug contaminants, and some may also pose a risk to human health. White-rot fungi (WRF), which degrade a wide spectrum of environmental pollutants, may be used as an alternative to microorganisms. However, little data exists comparing the removal of various PhACs by different WRF. In this study, we aimed to determine the ability of three WRF Basidiomycota species, Armillaria mellea, Phanerochaete chrysosporium, and Pleurotus ostreatus, to remove PhACs from various therapeutic groups over the course of 1 h-4 days. Additionally, we identified the fungal metabolites of PhACs, proposed the degradation pathways, and assessed the toxicity of the post-culture media. All selected WRF removed PhACs, but the degree of removal depended on WRF species and PhACs type. Antidepressants and immunosuppressants were removed most efficiently by P. ostreatus, cardiovascular drugs and sulfamethoxazole by A. mellea, and erythromycin by P. chrysosporium. The vast differences observed highlight the need for more intensive testing of different WRF species to select the best species for removing pharmaceuticals of interest. The structure of metabolites generated during degradation strongly depended on WRF species, but the most frequent xenobiotic transformations were oxidation and dealkylation. The obtained results gave insight into the substrate specificity of selected WRF while also providing a broad extension of the knowledge of pharmaceutical degradation by A. mellea.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of antidepressant mirtazapine impair the neurodevelopment of zebrafish (Danio rerio)

Mirtazapine is a commonly prescribed antidepressant and has been found widespread in aquatic environments. However, its toxicities to aquatic organisms has rarely been explored. Herein, we conducted a comprehensive study on the developmental effects of mirtazapine on early life stages of zebrafish at environmentally relevant concentrations (3.9 ng/L and 43.5 ng/L). Out of the endpoints measured, spontaneous contraction of embryos at 24 h post fertilization (hpf) and hatching rate and heart rate of embryos at 50 hpf and 56 hpf, respectively, were significantly affected. In light-dark transition behavior test, mirtazapine significantly reduced the swimming frequency and swimming speed of embryos at both concentrations of 3.9 ng/L and 43.5 ng/L. Furthermore, the total swimming distances in dark conditions were also significantly reduced. Transcriptomic analysis was further conducted. It demonstrated that the decreased neural activities in embryos may be associated with altered epinephrine and neuregulin signaling. The present results fill a data gap regarding the exposure of fish to mirtazapine at environmentally relevant concentrations and provide new insights into the neurotoxic mechanisms of mirtazapine exposure.

Assessment of selected pharmaceuticals in Riyadh wastewater treatment plants, Saudi Arabia: Mass loadings, seasonal variations, removal efficiency and environmental risk

Despite increasing interest in pharmaceutical emissions worldwide, studies of environmental contamination with pharmaceuticals arising from wastewater discharges in Saudi Arabia are scarce. Therefore, this study examined occurrence, mass loads and removal efficiency for 15 pharmaceuticals and one metabolite (oxypurinol) from different therapeutic classes in three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), in Riyadh city in Saudi Arabia. A total of 144 samples were collected from the influents and effluents between March 2018 and July 2019 and analyzed using Solid Phase Extraction followed by triple quadrupole LC-MS/MS. The average concentrations in the influents and effluents were generally higher than their corresponding concentrations found either in previous Saudi Arabian or global studies. The four most dominant compounds in the influent were acetaminophen, ciprofloxacin, caffeine, and diclofenac, with caffeine and acetaminophen having the highest concentrations ranging between 943 and 2282 μg/L. Metformin and ciprofloxacin were the most frequently detected compounds in the effluents at concentrations as high as 33.2 μg/L. Ciprofloxacin had the highest mass load in the effluents of all three WWTPs, ranging between 0.20 and 20.7 mg/day/1000 inhabitants for different WWTPs. The overall average removal efficiency was estimated high (≥80), with no significant different (p > 0.05) between the treatment technology applied. Acetaminophen and caffeine were almost completely eliminated in all three WWTPs. The samples collected in the cold season generally had higher levels of detected compounds than those from the warm seasons, particularly for NSAID and antibiotic compounds. The estimated environmental risk from pharmaceutical compounds in the studied effluents was mostly low, except for antibiotic compounds. Thus, antibiotics should be considered for future monitoring programmes of the aquatic environment in Saudi Arabia.

Fate of emerging contaminants in a sequencing batch reactor and potential of biological activated carbon as tertiary treatment for the removal of persisting contaminants

The study aims to understand the occurrence and removal of 20 emerging contaminants (ECs) in each unit process of a sequencing batch reactor-based wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and explore the potential of biological activated carbon (BAC) for the treatment of residual ECs and organic matter in the secondary effluent. Analgesic-acetaminophen, anti-inflammatory drug-ibuprofen, and stimulant-caffeine were detected at high concentrations in the influent. Most of the removal was observed in the biological treatment stage in the SBR basins. The mass load of the ECs was 2.93 g/d in the secondary effluent and 0.4 g/d in the final sludge, while the total removal of the mass load of ECs till the secondary treatment stage was 93.22%. 12 of the 20 ECs were removed by more than 50%, while carbamazepine (negative removal), sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim were removed by less than 20%. As a polishing step and to remove residual ECs, two BAC units were studied for 11,000 bed volumes (324 days). Packed column studies on granular activated carbon were conducted, and GAC development to BAC was monitored. SEM and FTIR were used to confirm and characterize the BAC. The BAC appeared to be more hydrophobic than the GAC. The BAC removed 78.4% and 40% of the dissolved ECs and organic carbon at an optimum EBCT of 25 min. Carbamazepine, sulfamethoxazole, and trimethoprim were removed by 61.5, 84, and 52.2%, respectively. Parallel column tests revealed adsorption as an important mechanism for the removal of positively charged compounds. The results indicate that the BAC is an effective tertiary/polishing technique for removing organic and micropollutants in the secondary wastewater effluent.

The role of anthocyanin and kaolinite in modifying cabbage leaves biochar for removal of potentially toxic elements and pharmaceutical from aqueous solution

We investigated the feasibility of two novel engineered biochar composites by pyrolyzing cabbage leaves at 350 °C after pre-treating them with anthocyanin, followed by a post-treatment with kaolinite for the removal of two potentially toxic elements (copper and lead) and a pharmaceutical compound, metoprolol. Results showed that the Kaolinite-biochar composite (KB) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity, 188.67 and 48.07 mg/g for Pb and Cu at pH 5, and the anthocyanin-biochar composite (AB) exhibited the highest adsorption capacity: 41.15 mg/g for metoprolol at pH 6, compared to raw biochar respectively. The enhancement of the adsorption of heavy metal and metoprolol by KB and AB was due to an increase in certain oxygen functional groups, as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) results. The pseudo-second order kinetic model, along with Langmuir isotherm model, best described the kinetic and the isotherms for Pb, Cu and metoprolol in KB and AB composites, respectively. FTIR, XPS, and zeta potential measurements indicated that the sorption mechanisms involved electrostatic interaction, ion exchange, and complexation for the metals, while electrostatic interaction, H-bonding, π-πinteraction, and hydrophobic bonding were postulated as the contributing mechanisms in the sorption process of metoprolol. Anthocyanin and kaolinite could potentially be considered as alternative sustainable materials for modifying raw biochar and remediating toxic elements and pharmaceuticals in aqueous media.

Prediction of pharmaceuticals removal in activated sludge system under different operational parameters using an extended ASM-PhACs model

Removal of pharmaceuticals is essential in wastewater treatment systems due to their release and accumulation in the environment, which are raising issues for the environment and human health. A mathematical model could be used to predict pharmaceuticals removal under various operational parameters and assess the contributions of different removal pathways to pharmaceuticals removal. Here an ASM-PhACs model was established to describe pharmaceuticals removal including diclofenac (DCF), erythromycin (ERY), gemfibrozil (GEM) and carbamazepine (CBZ) removal in activated sludge system. The pharmaceuticals removal processes linked to co-metabolic biodegradation through the growth of ammonia oxidizing bacteria (AOB), metabolic biodegradation through AOB, metabolic biodegradation through heterotrophic bacteria (HB) and sludge adsorption were incorporated into activated sludge model (ASM1) framework. The kinetic equations were established for each pharmaceuticals removal process. To provide the experimental data for model calibration and validation, two sets of batch tests were designed and conducted in the laboratory scale using SBR technology. According to the batch test data and results of sensitivity analysis, the newly added parameters and some original default parameters affecting pharmaceuticals removal processes were screened and calibrated. The model could accurately simulate all the dynamics of chemical oxygen demand, nitrogen and pharmaceuticals under various conditions. To explore the effect of operational parameters on pharmaceuticals removal efficiency, the wide range of operational parameters was analyzed during model simulation. According to the simulation results, both influent NH₄⁺-N concentration and DO were found to be the significant parameters that impact the removal of DCF, ERY and GEM. AOB biodegradation played an important role in DCF, ERY and GEM removal. The developed model framework helps to investigate the removal mechanisms and key influencing factors of pharmaceuticals removal, thus providing guidelines for reactor design, operation and optimization aiming at pharmaceuticals removal.

Aquatic photolysis of high-risk chemicals of emerging concern from secondary effluent mediated by sunlight irradiation for ecological safety and the enhanced methods

Natural sunlight can reduce the chemicals of emerging concern (CECs) and biological effects from the discharged domestic wastewater. But the aquatic photolysis and biotoxic variations of specific CECs detected in secondary effluent (SE) were not clear. In this study, 29 CECs were detected in the SE, and 13 medium- and high-risk CECs were identified as target chemicals based on their ecological risk assessment. To comprehensively explore the photolysis properties of the identified target chemicals, the direct and self-sensitized photodegradation of the target chemicals, even the indirect photodegradation in the mixture, were investigated and compared with these photodegradation in the SE. Of the 13 target chemicals, only five chemicals (including dichlorvos (DDVP), mefenamic acid (MEF), diphenhydramine hydrochloride (DPH), chlorpyrifos (CPF), and imidacloprid (IMI)) underwent direct and self-sensitized photodegradation processes. The removal of DDVP, MEF, and DPH was attributed to self-sensitized photodegradation, which was mainly mediated by •OH; CPF and IMI primarily relied on direct photodegradation. Synergistic and/or antagonistic actions that occurred in the mixture improved/decreased the rate constants of five photodegradable target chemicals. Meanwhile, the biotoxicities (acute toxicity and genotoxicity) of the target chemicals (including individual chemicals and the mixture) were significantly reduced, which can explain the reduction of biotoxicities from SE. For the two refractory high-risk chemicals, atrazine (ATZ) and carbendazim (MBC), algae-derived intracellular dissolved organic matter (IOM) on ATZ, and IOM and extracellular dissolved organic matter (EOM) on MBC had slightly promotion for their photodegradation; while peroxysulfate, and peroxymonosulfate served as sensitizers were activated by natural sunlight and effectively improved their photodegradation rate, and then reduced their biotoxicities. These findings will promote the development of CECs treatment technologies based on sunlight irradiation.

Efficient determination of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs by micellar electrokinetic chromatography in wastewater

Recently, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) have been increasingly used in humans and animals. Despite being effective against a wide variety of diseases, they pose a threat to aquatic environments. In the current work, a highly efficient, selective, and sensitive micellar electrokinetic chromatography (MEKC) method was developed for the determination of five NSAIDs in environmental water samples. The optimal separation BGE was 15 mM borate buffer (pH 9), 90 mM SDS, and 10% methanol at a separation voltage of 15 kV and a hydrodynamic injection of 10 mbar for 5 s. The results presented in this study provide a higher number of theoretical plates N > 780 000 with excellent RSDs of 0.1-1.5% and great sensitivity (3-15 μg L^-1) for NSAIDs. To validate this method, the solid phase extraction method was optimized using two different cartridges (C18 and Oasis HLB); the results showed excellent recoveries (73-111.6%) for all the analytes in wastewater samples.

Experimental investigation for treating ibuprofen and triclosan by biosurfactant from domestic wastewater

The presence of emerging pollutants of pharmaceutical products and personal care products (PPCPs) in the aquatic environment overspreads the threat on living beings. Bioremediation is a promising option for treating wastewater. In the present study, an experimental investigation was carried out to produce a biosurfactant by Pseudomonas aeruginosa (MTCC 1688) for the removal of Ibuprofen (IBU) and Triclosan (TCS) from domestic wastewater. It was performed in three stages. Firstly, the production and optimization of biosurfactant was carried out to arrive at the best combination of crude sunflower oil, sucrose and ammonium bicarbonate (10%: 5.5 g/L: 1 g/L) to yield effective biosurfactant production (crude biosurfactant) and further extended to achieve critical micelle concentration (CMC) formation by dilution (biosurfactant at 10.5%). The stability of the biosurfactant was also confirmed. Biosurfactant showed a reduction in the surface tension to 41 mN/m with a yield concentration of 11.2 g/L. Secondly, its effectiveness was evaluated for the removal of IBU and TCS from the domestic wastewater collected during the dry and rainy seasons. Complete removal of IBU was achieved at 36 h & 6 h and TCS at 6 h & 1 h by crude biosurfactant and biosurfactant at CMC formation for the dry season sample. IBU removal was achieved in 2 h by both crude and biosurfactant at CMC and no TCS was detected in the rainy season sample. Thirdly, biotransformation intermediates of IBU and TCS formed during the application of the biosurfactant and degradation pathways are proposed based on the Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (LC-MS) and it indicates that there is no formation of toxic by-products. Based on the results, it is evident that biosurfactant at CMC has performed better for the removal of IBU and TCS than crude biosurfactants without any formation of toxic intermediates. Hence, this study proved to be an eco-friendly, cost-effective and sustainable treatment option for domestic wastewater treatment.

Current research trends on emerging contaminants pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs): A comprehensive review

Pharmaceutical and personnel care products (PPCPs) from wastewater are a potential hazard to the human health and wildlife, and their occurrence in wastewater has caught the concern of researchers recently. To deal with PPCPs, various treatment technologies have been evolved such as physical, biological, and chemical methods. Nevertheless, modern and efficient techniques such as advance oxidation processes (AOPs) demand expensive chemicals and energy, which ultimately leads to a high treatment cost. Therefore, integration of chemical techniques with biological processes has been recently suggested to decrease the expenses. Furthermore, combining ozonation with activated carbon (AC) can significantly enhance the removal efficiency. There are some other emerging technologies of lower operational cost like photo-Fenton method and solar radiation-based methods as well as constructed wetland, which are promising. However, feasibility and practicality in pilot-scale have not been estimated for most of these advanced treatment technologies. In this context, the present review work explores the treatment of emerging PPCPs in wastewater, via available conventional, non-conventional, and integrated technologies. Furthermore, this work focused on the state-of-art technologies via an extensive literature search, highlights the limitations and challenges of the prevailing commercial technologies. Finally, this work provides a brief discussion and offers future research directions on technologies needed for treatment of wastewater containing PPCPs, accompanied by techno-economic feasibility assessment.

Contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in Indonesia

This study provides the first set of quantitative data on the occurrence and fate of a wide range of contaminants of emerging concerns (CECs) in Indonesia's largest wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). The WWTP employs waste stabilization ponds (WSPs) as the secondary treatment before discharging the effluent to the Citarum River. Fourteen out of twenty-two monitored CECs were detected in the wastewater influent, and seven were present in the effluent, with a total concentration of 29.8 ± 0.4 µg/L and 0.5 ± 0.0 µg/L, respectively. The occurrence of the CECs in this study was found to be well correlated with their possible use and known detection in surface waters in Indonesia. Caffeine (CAF) at 12.2 ± 0.1 µg/L, acetaminophen (ACT) at 9.1 ± 0.1 µg/L, N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) at 5.0 ± 0.1 µg/L, ibuprofen (IBU) at 2.3 ± 0.0 µg/L, and triclosan (TCS) at 470 ± 64 ng/L were discovered as the five most prevalent CECs, followed by bisphenol A (BPA), trimethoprim (TMP), Tris(2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), sulfamethazine (SMZ), carbamazepine (CBZ), fluoxetine (FLX), benzotriazole (BTA), sulfamethoxazole (SMX), and metformin (METF). Biodegradable CECs (SMX, SMZ, ACT, IBU, TCS, BPA, CAF, DEET, and TMP) were efficiently removed (83-100%) by the WSP. In contrast, recalcitrant CECs achieved poor removal efficiencies (e.g., FLX at 24%), and for others, treatment processes even resulted in elevated concentrations in the effluent (CBZ by 85%, TCEP by 149%, and BTA by 92%). The CECs' influent concentrations were determined to pose a moderate aquatic cumulative risk, while no such risk was associated with their effluent concentrations. The study demonstrates the importance of conventional WWTPs in reducing the concentrations of CECs to minimize their aquatic contamination risk. The findings are relevant for countries, such as Indonesia, with limited resources for advanced centralized wastewater treatments, and which are exploring the efficacy of centralized WSP against the existing decentralized treatments.

Contamination, transport, and ecological risks of pharmaceuticals and personal care products in a large irrigation region

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted widespread attention owing to their extensive use and potential adverse effects on human and ecosystem health. There is a lack of information regarding the occurrence and environmental fate of PPCPs in large agricultural irrigation areas in China. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive survey on 30 PPCPs in water from Hetao Irrigation District, one of the three largest irrigation areas in China. The ΣPPCP-concentrations ranged 82.13-1409.24 ng/L in August and 40.53-887.20 ng/L in November, with caffeine (CAF), norfloxacin (NOR), erythromycin (ERY), sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ofloxacin (OFL) being the predominant compositions. Spatially, the average ΣPPCP concentrations increased from irrigation to drainage water, and then decreased in Wuliangsuhai Lake. Less PPCP mass loading (55.05 kg/y) migrated from Wuliangsuhai Lake to Yellow River than that from the Yellow River to Hetao Irrigation District (425.88 kg/y), indicating that Wuliangsuhai Lake plays an important role in improving water quality. An ecological risk assessment showed that it is worthwhile to consider the presence of CAF, ERY, NOR, and OFL in natural surface water and to control their potential risks.

The screening of emerging micropollutants in wastewater in Sol Plaatje Municipality, Northern Cape, South Africa

Although pollutants pose environmental and human health risks, the majority are not routinely monitored and regulated. Organic pollutants emanate from a variety of sources, and can be classified depending on their chemistry and environmental fate. Classification of pollutants is important because it informs fate processes and apposite removal technologies. The occurrence of emerging contaminants (ECs) in water bodies is a source of environmental and human health concern globally. Despite being widely reported, data on the occurrence of ECs in South Africa are scarce. Specifically, ECS in wastewater in the Northern Cape in South Africa are understudied. In this study, various ECs were screened in water samples collected from three wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the province. The ECs were detected using liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution Orbitrap mass spectrometry following Oasis HLB solid-phase extraction. The main findings were: (1) there is a wide variety of ECs in the WWTPs, (2) physico-chemical properties such as pH, total dissolved solids, conductivity, and dissolved organic content showed reduced values in the outlet compared to the inlet which confirms the presence of less contaminants in the treated wastewater, (3) specific ultraviolet absorbance of less than 2 was observed in the WWTPs samples, suggesting the presence of natural organic matter (NOM) that is predominantly non-humic in nature, (4) most of the ECs were recalcitrant to the treatment processes, (5) pesticides, recreational drugs, and analgesics constitute a significant proportion of pollutants in wastewater, and (6) NOM removal ranged between 35 and 90%. Consequently, a comprehensive database of ECs in wastewater in Sol Plaatje Municipality was created. Since the detected ECs pose ecotoxicological risks, there is a need to monitor and quantify ECs in WWTPs. These data are useful in selecting suitable monitoring and control strategies at WWTPs.

Fate of selected pharmaceuticals in hospital and municipal wastewater effluent: occurrence, removal, and environmental risk assessment

The concentrations and distribution of β-blockers, lipid regulators, and psychiatric and cancer drugs in the influent and effluent of the municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) and the effluent of 16 hospitals that discharge into the wastewater treatment plant mentioned in this study at two sampling dates in summer and winter were examined. The pharmaceutical contribution of hospitals to municipal wastewater was determined. The removal of target pharmaceuticals was evaluated in a WWTP consisting of conventional biological treatment using activated sludge. Additionally, the potential environmental risk for the aquatic receiving environments (salt lake) was assessed. Beta-blockers and psychiatric drugs were detected in high concentrations in the wastewater samples. Atenolol (919 ng/L) from β-blockers and carbamazepine (7008 ng/L) from psychiatric pharmaceuticals were detected at the highest concentrations in hospital wastewater. The total pharmaceutical concentration determined at the WWTP influent and effluent was between 335 and 737 ng/L in summer and between 174 and 226 ng/L in winter. The concentrations detected in hospital effluents are higher than the concentrations detected in WWTP. The total pharmaceutical contributions from hospitals to the WWTP in summer and winter were determined to be 2% and 4%, respectively. Total pharmaceutical removal in the WWTP ranged from 23 to 54%. According to the risk ratios, atenolol could pose a high risk (risk quotient > 10) for fish in summer and winter. There are different reasons for the increase in pharmaceutical consumption in recent years. One of these reasons is the COVID-19 pandemic, which has been going on for 2 years. In particular, hospitals were operated at full capacity during the pandemic, and the occurrence and concentration of pharmaceuticals used for the therapy of COVID-19 patients has increased in hospital effluent. Pandemic conditions have increased the tendency of people to use psychiatric drugs. It is thought that beta-blocker consumption has increased due to cardiovascular diseases caused by COVID-19. Therefore, the environmental risk of pharmaceuticals for aquatic organisms in hospital effluent should be monitored and evaluated.

Rapid determination of NSAIDs by capillary and microchip electrophoresis with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection in wastewater

A simple, rapid method using CE and microchip electrophoresis with C⁴ D has been developed for the separation of four nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) in the environmental sample. The investigated compounds were ibuprofen (IB), ketoprofen (KET), acetylsalicylic acid (ASA), and diclofenac sodium (DIC). In the present study, we applied for the first time microchip electrophoresis with C⁴ D detection to the separation and detection of ASA, IB, DIC, and KET in the wastewater matrix. Under optimum conditions, the four NSAIDs compounds could be well separated in less than 1 min in a BGE composed of 20 mM His/15 mM Tris, pH 8.6, 2 mM hydroxypropyl-beta-cyclodextrin, and 10% methanol (v/v) at a separation voltage of 1000-1200 V. The proposed method showed excellent repeatability, good sensitivity (LODs ranging between 0.156 and 0.6 mg/L), low cost, high sample throughputs, portable instrumentation for mobile deployment, and extremely lower reagent and sample consumption. The developed method was applied to the analysis of pharmaceuticals in wastewater samples with satisfactory recoveries ranging from 62.5% to 118%.

Pharmaceuticals and Personal Care Products across Different Water Bodies in Taihu Lake Basin, China: Occurrence, Source, and Flux

Although pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) have attracted great attentions, their occurrence characteristics across different water bodies at a basin scale remain poorly understood. To grasp a more comprehensive understanding of PPCP pollution from the perspective of the whole basin, the occurrence, spatial and seasonal variation, source, and flux of thirteen PPCPs across the different environmental compartments of the northern Taihu Lake Basin (TLB) were studied. The results showed that the non-therapeutic pharmaceuticals caffeine (CFI) and n, n-diethyl-m-toluamide (DEET) were the main components across the different environmental compartments. The total concentrations of detected PPCPs ranged from 0.2 to 2437.9 ng/L. Higher concentrations of PPCPs were observed in spring and autumn, which were mainly attributed to seasonal differences in PPCP consumption. Generally, pollution level was higher in industry and agriculture area and in the inner bay and southwest of Taihu Lake. Source apportionment indicated that untreated water was the main source of PPCPs in river waters of the northern TLB. Flux estimation showed that the mean annual flux of PPCPs from northern TLB to Taihu Lake in 2021 was 1.6 t/a, which was higher in comparison with other areas. Overall, the resulting data will be useful to enrich the research of PPCPs in freshwater for environmental investigations.

First report on the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and cocaine in the coastal waters of Santa Catarina, Brazil, and its related ecological risk assessment

The worldwide occurrence of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in aquatic ecosystems is reason for public concern. These emerging micropollutants include a large and diverse group of organic compounds, with continuous input, high environmental persistence and potential threat to biota and human health. The aim of this study was to evaluate, for the first time, the occurrence of twenty-seven PPCPs of various therapeutic classes (including cocaine and its primary metabolite, benzoylecgonine), in the coastal waters of Santa Catarina, southern Brazil. Water samples were taken in November 2020, during the low tide periods, at eight sampling points located along the coast of Santa Catarina, covering its entire geographical extension. Sampling was carried out in triplicate and at different depths of the water column. Nine compounds were detected through liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS): caffeine (12.58-119.80 ng/L), diclofenac (1.34-7.92 ng/L), atenolol (1.13-2.50 ng/L), losartan (0.43-3.20 ng/L), acetaminophen (0.21-10.04 ng/L), orphenadrine (0.07-0.09 ng/L), cocaine (0.02-0.17 ng/L), benzoylecgonine (0.01-1.1 ng/L) and carbamazepine (0.02-0.27 ng/L). The highest occurrence of these compounds was detected in the northern and central coastal region of Santa Catarina, namely in Penha and Palhoça cities. Moreover, the risk assessment showed that almost compounds (atenolol, benzoylecgonine, carbamazepine, cocaine and orphenadrine) presented no ecological risk in the recorded concentrations. However, a few compounds suggest low (caffeine and diclofenac) to moderate (acetaminophen and losartan) risk taking into consideration the acute and chronic effects for the three trophic levels (algae, crustacean and fish) tested. These compounds are usually found in areas with high population density, aggravated by tourism, because of the sanitary sewage and solid waste. Although in low concentrations, the occurrence of these chemical compounds can imply deleterious effects on the environmental health of Santa Catarina coastal zone, and therefore deserve more attention by the public authorities and environmental agencies.

A review toward contaminants of emerging concern in Brazil: Occurrence, impact and their degradation by advanced oxidation process in aquatic matrices

This work presents data regarding the occurrence and treatment of Contaminants of Emerging Concern (CECs) in Brazil in the past decade. The literature review (2011-2021) revealed the detection of 87 pharmaceutical drugs and personal care products, 58 pesticides, 8 hormones, 2 illicit drugs, caffeine and bisphenol A in distinct matrices (i.e.: wastewater, groundwater, sea water, rainwater, surface water, drinking water and hospital effluent). Concentrations of CECs varied from ng-μg L^-1 depending on the location, compound and matrix. The inefficiency of conventional wastewater treatment methods on the removal of CECs and lack of basic sanitation in some regions in the country aggravates contamination of Brazilian aquatic environments and poses potential environmental and health risks. Advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) are pointed out as viable and efficient alternatives to degrade CECs and prevent environmental contamination. A total of 375 studies involving the use of AOPs in Brazilian aqueous matrices were published in the last decade. Fenton and photo-Fenton processes, photo-peroxidation, ozonation, electrochemical advanced oxidation and heterogeneous photocatalysis are some of the AOPs applied by Brazilian research groups. Although many works discuss the importance of applying these technologies for CECs removal in real treatment plants, most of these studies assess the treatment of distilled water or simulated effluent. Therefore, the conduction of studies applying AOPs in real matrices are critical to drive the implementation of these processes coupled to conventional water and wastewater treatment in real plants in order to prevent the contamination of environmental matrices by CECs in Brazil.

Catalytic Membrane with Copper Single-Atom Catalysts for Effective Hydrogen Peroxide Activation and Pollutant Destruction

The superior catalytic property of single-atom catalysts (SACs) renders them highly desirable in the energy and environmental fields. However, using SACs for water decontamination is hindered by their limited spatial distribution and density on engineered surfaces and low stability in complex aqueous environments. Herein, we present copper SACs (Cu₁) anchored on a thiol-doped reactive membrane for water purification. We demonstrate that the fabricated Cu₁ features a Cu-S₂ coordination─one copper atom is bridged by two thiolate sulfur atoms, resulting in high-density Cu-SACs on the membrane (2.1 ± 0.3 Cu atoms per nm²). The Cu-SACs activate peroxide to generate hydroxyl radicals, exhibiting fast kinetics, which are 40-fold higher than those of nanoparticulate Cu catalysts. The Cu₁-functionalized membrane oxidatively removes organic pollutants from feedwater in the presence of peroxide, achieving efficient water purification. We provide evidence that a dual-site cascade mechanism is responsible for in situ regeneration of Cu₁. Specifically, one of the two linked sulfur atoms detaches the oxidized Cu₁ while donating one electron, and an adjacent free thiol rebinds the reduced Cu(I)-S pair, retrieving the Cu-S₂ coordination on the reactive membrane. This work presents a universal, facile approach for engineering robust SACs on water-treatment membranes and broadens the application of SACs to real-world environmental problems.

Recent advances in electrocatalytic membrane for the removal of micropollutants from water and wastewater

The increasing occurrence of micropollutants in water and wastewater threatens human health and ecological security. Electrocatalytic membrane (EM), a new hybrid water treatment platform that integrates membrane separation with electrochemical technologies, has attracted extensive attention in the removal of micropollutants from water and wastewater in the past decade. Here, we systematically review the recent advances of EM for micropollutant removal from water and wastewater. The mechanisms of the EM for micropollutant removal are first introduced. Afterwards, the related membrane materials and operating conditions of the EM are summarized and analyzed. Lastly, the challenges and future prospects of the EM in research and applications are also discussed, aiming at a more efficient removal of micropollutants from water and wastewater.

Quantification and composition of pharmaceutical waste in New Zealand

This study aimed to quantify the amount of pharmaceutical waste produced in New Zealand, and determine the composition of pharmaceutical waste from community pharmacies in Auckland, New Zealand. Pharmaceutical waste collected in New Zealand is increasing, peaking at 542 tonne in 2019. Pharmaceutical waste collected from hospitals and pharmacies in Auckland increased by more than fourfold from 2016 to 2020. An audit of the types of pharmaceutical waste collected from community pharmacies revealed that the most common classes of drugs identified in this waste stream belonged to the nervous system, cardiovascular system and alimentary tract, and metabolism. Following examination of the contents of 12 pharmaceutical waste bins, 475 different pharmaceutical products were identified, highlighting the breadth of drugs in this waste stream. A range of dosage forms and hence materials were identified, which could present challenges for future waste treatment approaches. Hazardous drugs were identified including cytotoxic compounds, which should go into a separate waste stream for incineration. There is a need for similar data to be collected from multiple sites to fully appreciate the magnitude and composition of pharmaceutical waste. This will allow for the suitability of current practices for managing this hazardous waste stream to be evaluated.

Suspected-screening assessment of the occurrence of organic compounds in sewage sludge

The profiling of emerging organic pollutants present in sludge and generated during wastewater treatment is much more limited than in water. This is mainly due to the difficulty of sludge analysis because of its high content of organic matter and interfering compounds. In this study, a generic extraction method using a mixture of buffered water (pH 4.1) and solid phase extraction (SPE) clean-up was applied to samples of sludge obtained in different treatment plants. This extraction was followed by determination of the contaminants by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled to high resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-HRMS), using suspected screening to detect the most relevant organic compounds that access the environment through sludge application. This screening (including >3000 substances, such as, pharmaceuticals, pesticides, metabolites and industrial chemicals) tentatively identified 122 compound and assigned most probable structure to 39. The set of compounds assigned to a probable structure was increased in 14 compounds by searching in a free database of metabolites. Fifteen compounds were unequivocally confirmed against the analytical standard. Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs), with 31 substances identified and 8 confirmed were the main group of compounds. Compounds frequently detected in all sludge samples include nucleotides such as adenosine triphosphate, amino acids such as phenylalanine, or peptides such as leu-phe. Altogether, the results of this work highlight the interest of HRMS to draw the profile of organic compounds in complex matrices.

Hydrochar: A Promising Step Towards Achieving a Circular Economy and Sustainable Development Goals

The United Nations 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the environment, and improve the lives and prospects of everyone on this planet. However, progress on SDGs is currently lagging behind its 2030 target. The availability of water of adequate quality and quantity is considered as one of the most significant challenges in reaching that target. The concept of the ‘Circular Economy’ has been termed as a potential solution to fasten the rate of progress in achieving SDGs. One of the promising engineering solutions with applications in water treatment and promoting the concept of the circular economy is hydrochar. Compared to biochar, hydrochar research is still in its infancy in terms of optimization of production processes, custom design for specific applications, and knowledge of its water treatment potential. In this context, this paper critically reviews the role of hydrochar in contributing to achieving the SDGs and promoting a circular economy through water treatment and incorporating a waste-to-value approach. Additionally, key knowledge gaps in the production and utilization of engineered hydrochar are identified, and possible strategies are suggested to further enhance its water remediation potential and circular economy in the context of better natural resource management using hydrochar. Research on converting different waste biomass to valuable hydrochar based products need further development and optimization of parameters to fulfil its potential. Critical knowledge gaps also exist in the area of utilizing hydrochar for large-scale drinking water treatment to address SDG-6.

A comprehensive review on comparison among effluent treatment methods and modern methods of treatment of industrial wastewater effluent from different sources

In recent years, rapid development in the industrial sector has offered console to the people but at the same time, generates numerous amounts of effluent composed of toxic elements like nitrogen, phosphorus, hydrocarbons, and heavy metals that influences the environment and mankind hazardously. While the technological advancements are made in industrial effluent treatment, there arising stretch in the techniques directing on hybrid system that are effective in resource recovery from effluent in an economical, less time consuming and viable manner. The key objective of this article is to study, propose and deliberate the process and products obtained from different industries and the quantity of effluents produced, and the most advanced and ultra-modern theoretical and scientific improvements in treatment methods to remove those dissolved matter and toxic substances and also the challenges and perspectives in these developments. The findings of this review appraise new eco-friendly technologies, provide intuition into the efficiency in contaminants removal and aids in interpreting degradation mechanism of toxic elements by various treatment assemblages.

Heterogeneous Advanced Oxidation Processes: Current Approaches for Wastewater Treatment

Nowadays, water pollution is one of the most dangerous environmental problems in the world. The presence of the so-called emerging pollutants in the different water bodies, impossible to eliminate through conventional biological and physical treatments used in wastewater treatment plants due to their persistent and recalcitrant nature, means that pollution continues growing throughout the world. The presence of these emerging pollutants involves serious risks to human and animal health for aquatic and terrestrial organisms. Therefore, in recent years, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have been postulated as a viable, innovative and efficient technology for the elimination of these types of compounds from water bodies. The oxidation/reduction reactions triggered in most of these processes require a suitable catalyst. The most recent research focuses on the use and development of different types of heterogeneous catalysts, which are capable of overcoming some of the operational limitations of homogeneous processes such as the generation of metallic sludge, difficult separation of treated water and narrow working pH. This review details the current advances in the field of heterogeneous AOPs, Fenton processes and photocatalysts for the removal of different types of emerging pollutants.

Phycoremediation integrated approach for the removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products from wastewater - A review

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are of emerging concerns because of their large usage, persistent nature which promised their continuous disposal into the environment, as these pollutants are stable enough to pass through wastewater treatment plants causing hazardous effects on all the organisms through bioaccumulation, biomagnification, and bioconcentration. The available technologies are not capable of eliminating all the PPCPs along with their degraded products but phycoremediation has the advantage over these technologies by biodegrading the pollutants without developing resistant genes. Even though phycoremediation has many advantages, industries have found difficulty in adapting this technology as a single-stage treatment process. To overcome these drawbacks recent research studies have focused on developing technology that integrated phycoremediation with the commonly employed treatment processes that are in operation for treating the PPCPs effectively. This review paper focuses on such research approaches that focused on integrating phycoremediation with other technologies such as activated sludge process (ASP), advanced oxidation process (AOP), Up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket reactor (UASBR), UV irradiation, and constructed wetland (CW) with the advantages and limitations of each integration processes. Furthermore, augmenting phycoremediation by co-metabolic mechanism with the addition of sodium chloride, sodium acetate, and glucose for the removal of PPCPs has been highlighted in this review paper.

Biodegradability, environmental risk assessment and ecological footprint in wastewater technologies for pharmaceutically active compounds removal

Several studies have investigated the removal of pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs) by wastewater treatment technologies due to the risk that these compounds pose to the environment. In this sense, advanced biological processes have been developed for micropollutants removal, such as membrane bioreactors and moving bed biofilm reactors. Thus, this review holistically evaluated the biodegradation of 18 environmentally hazardous PhACs. Biological processes were assessed including removal efficiencies, environmental risk, and ecological footprint (consumption of resources and energy, atmospheric emissions, and waste generation). The maximum concentration of PhACs for a low or negligible risk scenario in treated wastewater and the potential of biological processes to meet this goal were assessed. Among the evaluated PhACs, the most biodegradable was paracetamol, while the most recalcitrant was diclofenac. Combination of conventional processes and advanced biological processes proved to be the most efficient way to remove several PhACs, mainly the osmotic membrane bioreactor.

Assessment of a wide array of organic micropollutants of emerging concern in wastewater treatment plants in Greece: Occurrence, removals, mass loading and potential risks

Exploring the contamination profile of multi-class emerging contaminants (ECs) in wastewater is highly desirable. To this end, the occurrence, removal, mass loading and risks associated with a large panel of pharmaceuticals and personal care products, illicit drugs, perfluorinated compounds and organophosphate flame retardants in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in the region of Thessaloniki (Greece) after a survey is illustrated. Influent and effluent wastewaters were submitted to solid phase extraction on Oasis HLB cartridges, followed by ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry (UHPLC-Orbitrap MS). Influent concentrations in both WWTPs were notably higher than effluent, with caffeine, acetaminophen, irbesartan and valsartan being the most ubiquitous compounds, exhibiting elevated concentrations. Average effluent concentrations ranged from below the method quantification limits (<MQL) to remarkably high values (μg L^-1 scale), such as for caffeine, acetaminophen, diclofenac, irbesartan and valsartan, among others. Removal efficiencies ranged between -273% for lamotrigine and 100%, i.e., for the UV filter BP1. Notably, the polar compounds such as cytarabine, methotrexate and capecitabine were removed at a rate >80% in both WWTPs, allowing the correlation between logK_ow and removals. Interesting trends for the illicit drugs were revealed by means of mass loading estimation, as in the case of benzoylecgonine (71.6 mg/day/1000 inhabitants). Ecotoxicological risk assessment was evaluated for both single components and mixture, using three approaches: risk quotient (RQ), risk quotient considering frequency (RQ_f) and toxic units (TU). Irbesartan and telmisartan posed a high risk in all trophic levels, while fish was the most sensitive taxa for diclofenac. This work aspires to intensify the surveillance programs for the receiving water bodies, as well as to motivate the investigation of toxicity to non-target organisms.

Occurrence, transformation, bioaccumulation, risk and analysis of pharmaceutical and personal care products from wastewater: a review

Almost all aspects of society from food security to disease control and prevention have benefited from pharmaceutical and personal care products, yet these products are a major source of contamination that ends up in wastewater and ecosystems. This issue has been sharply accentuated during the coronavirus disease pandemic 2019 (COVID-19) due to the higher use of disinfectants and other products. Here we review pharmaceutical and personal care products with focus on their occurrence in the environment, detection, risk, and removal.

The fate and removal of pharmaceuticals and personal care products within wastewater treatment facilities discharging to the Great Bay Estuary

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are contaminants of emerging concern that derive primarily in the water environment from combined sewer overflows and discharges from industrial and municipal wastewater treatment facilities (WWTFs). Due to incomplete removal during wastewater treatment, PPCP impacts to aquatic ecosystems are a major concern. The Great Bay Estuary (New Hampshire, USA) is an important ecological, commercial, and recreational resource where upstream WWTFs have recently been under pressure to reduce nitrogen loading to the estuary and consequently upgrade treatment systems. Therefore, we investigated the distribution and abundance of 18 PPCPs and three flame retardants within the Great Bay Estuary and WWTFs discharging to the estuary to examine how WWTF type influenced PPCP removal. All 21 analytes were frequently detected at μg/L to ng/L concentrations in influent and effluent and ng/kg in sludge. WWTFs with enhanced nutrient removal and longer solids retention times correlated to higher PPCP removal, indicating facility upgrades may have benefits related to PPCP removal. Understanding PPCP fate during treatment and in downstream waters informs our ability to assess the environmental and ecological impacts of PPCPs on estuarine resources and develop mitigation strategies to better protect marine ecosystems from emerging contaminant exposure. PRACTITIONER POINTS: PPCP removal positively correlated with solids retention time and varied by treatment facility and compound. Upgrade of WWTFs for biological nitrogen removal may also increase PPCP removal. Surface water fluoxetine concentrations may present an ecological risk to the Great Bay Estuary.

A review of antibiotic removal from domestic wastewater using the activated sludge process: removal routes, kinetics and operational parameters

Many advanced technologies have shown encouraging results in removing antibiotics from domestic wastewater. However, as activated sludge treatment is the most common sewage treatment system employed worldwide, improving its effect on antibiotic removal would be more desirable. Understanding the removal mechanisms, kinetics and factors that affect antibiotic removal in the activated sludge process is important as it would allow us to improve the treatment performance. Although these have been discussed in various literature covering different types of antibiotics and wastewater, a specific review on antibiotics and domestic wastewater is clearly missing. This review paper collates, discusses and analyses the removal of antibiotics from sewage in the activated sludge process along with the removal mechanisms and kinetics. The antibiotics are categorised into six classes: β-lactam, dihydrofolate reductase inhibitor, fluoroquinolone, macrolide, sulfonamides and tetracycline. Furthermore, the factors affecting the system performance with regard to antibiotic removal are examined.

Fast determination of paracetamol and its hydrolytic degradation product p-aminophenol by capillary and microchip electrophoresis with contactless conductivity detection

Paracetamol (PAC) is one of the most extensively used analgesics and antipyretic drugs to treat mild and moderate pain. P-aminophenol (PAP), the main hydrolytic degradation product of PAC, can be found in environmental water. Recently, capillary electrophoresis (CE) has been developed for the detection of a wide variety of chemical substances. The purpose of this study is to develop a simple and fast method for the detection and separation of PAC and its main hydrolysis product PAP, using CE and microchip electrophoresis (ME) with capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detection (C⁴ D). The determination of these compounds using ME with C⁴ D is being reported for the first time. The separation was run for all analytes using a background electrolyte (BGE) (20 Mm β-alanine, pH 11) containing 14% (v/v) methanol. The RSDs obtained for migration time were less than 0.05%, and RSDs obtained for peak area were less than 3%. The detection limits (S/N = 3) that were achieved ranged from 0.3 to 0.6 mg/L without sample preconcentration. The presented method showed rapid analysis time (less than 1 min), high efficiency and precision, low cost, and a significant decrease in the consumption of reagents. Aerobic granulation of nitrifying activated sludge enhanced removal of 17α-ethinylestradiol

The positive correlation between the nitrification activity of activated sludge and 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) removal has been widely reported. However, up to now the effect of the granulation of nitrifying activated sludge (NAS) on EE2 removal has not been determined. In this study, nitrifying granular sludge (NGS) exhibited more effective EE2 removal efficiency with 3.705 μgEE2∙(gMLSS∙h)^-1 in a sequential batch reactor (SBR). Through the artificial neural network (ANN) model and Spearman correlation analysis, nitrite accumulation was demonstrated to be the key factor affecting EE2 removal. Notably, under the same aeration condition (0.15 L/min), nitrite accumulation was more easily achieved in NGS because of its dense structure. Full-length 16S rRNA gene sequencing suggested that EE2 could strongly influence the microbial communities of NAS and NGS. NGS exhibited an increase in community diversity and richness, but NAS exhibited a decrease. In addition, the relative abundance of Nitrosomonas (ammonia-oxidizing bacteria, AOB) decreased considerably in both NAS and NGS, whereas the expression of amoA and nirK genes in Nitrosomonas was upregulated. It was suggested that Nitrosomonas was forced to regulate its gene expression to resist the negative effects of EE2. Denitrifying bacteria, such as Comamonas, were enriched in both NAS and NGS, and there were more species of heterotrophs that can degrade micropollutants in NGS with exposure to EE2. The transformation pathways of EE2 were uniform in NAS and NGS. Ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) in AOB directly biotransformed EE2 while reactive species produced by AOB chemically transformed EE2. Heterotrophs degraded EE2 and its transformation products (TPs) generated by AOB. According to TPs and microbial structure, NGS exhibited better performance than NAS regarding the collaborative removal of EE2 by AOB and heterotrophs. These results provide important information for the development and application of NGS to treat wastewater containing estrogen and high-strength ammonium.

Aquatic concentration and risk assessment of pharmaceutically active compounds in the environment

Pharmaceutically active compounds are increasingly detected in raw and treated wastewater, surface water, and drinking water worldwide. These compounds can cause adverse effects to the ecosystem even at low concentrations and, to assess these impacts, toxicity tests are essential. However, the toxicity data are scarce for many PhACs, and when available, they are dispersed in the literature. The values of pharmaceuticals concentration in the environment and toxicity data are essential for measuring their environmental and human health risks. Thus this review verified the concentrations of pharmaceuticals in the aquatic environment and the toxicity related to them. The risk assessment was also carried out. Diclofenac, naproxen, erythromycin, roxithromycin, and 17β-estradiol presented a high environment risk and 17α-ethinylestradiol presented a high human health risk. This shows the potential of these pharmaceuticals to cause adverse effects to the ecosystem and humans and establishes the necessity of their removal through advanced technologies.

Critical review on hazardous pollutants in water environment: Occurrence, monitoring, fate, removal technologies and risk assessment

Water is required for the existence of all living things. Water pollution has grown significantly, over the decades and now it has developed as a serious worldwide problem. The presence and persistence of Hazardous pollutants such as dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, heavy metals, fertilizer and pesticides and their transformed products are the matter of serious environmental and health concerns. A variety of approaches have been tried to clean up water and maintain water quality. The type of pollutants present in the water determines the bulk of technological solutions. The main objective of this article was to review the occurrences and fate of hazardous contaminants (dyes, pharmaceuticals and personal care products, heavy metals, and pesticides) found in wastewater effluents. These effluents mingle with other streams of water and that are utilized for a variety of reasons such as irrigation and other domestic activities that is further complicating the issue. It also discussed traditional treatment approaches as well as current advances in hazardous pollutants removal employing graphite oxides, carbon nanotubes, metal organic structures, magnetic nano composites, and other innovative forms of useable materials. It also discussed the identification and quantification of harmful pollutants using various approaches, as well as current advancements. Finally, a risk assessment of hazardous pollutants in water is provided in terms of the human health and the environment. This data is anticipated to serve as a foundation for future improvements in hazardous pollutant risk assessment. Furthermore, future studies on hazardous pollutants must not only emphasize on the parent chemicals, as well as on their possible breakdown products in various media.

Effects of the antidepressant mirtazapine on the swimming behaviour and gene expression rate of Danio rerio embryos - Is the sedating effect seen in humans also evident for fish?

In the last decade, mirtazapine has become an important antidepressant in clinical use and has also been found at many different environmental sampling sites. Several homologies between the zebrafish Danio rerio and humans, combined with a number of advantages for behavioural and gene expression research using zebrafish embryos, make their use for the analysis of mirtazapine appropriate. The sedative effect of mirtazapine in humans was also found for a specific concentration range in zebrafish embryos (1333.4 μg/L - 2666.9 μg/L). Specifically, 116 hpf old zebrafish embryos showed a reduced swimming distance when exposed to 1334.4 μg/L mirtazapine. Furthermore, changes at the gene regulatory level could be measured (1333.4 μg/L), in particular in the superordinate regulatory systems. For selected transporters of all regulatory systems, an up regulation of the genes by a factor of more than five times could be measured at the highest mirtazapine exposure concentration that was tested. Finally, studies on the protein levels demonstrated an increase in acetylcholinesterase activity for several exposure concentrations (83.3 μg/L and 666.7 μg/L). The physiological changes in zebrafish embryos caused by mirtazapine demonstrate the relevance of these types of studies in aquatic non-target organisms. Such neuroactive substances could pose a potential risk for aquatic organisms below the previously considered concentration threshold for morphological effects.

Modification of Ceramic Membranes with Carbon Compounds for Pharmaceutical Substances Removal from Water in a Filtration-Adsorption System

The aim of this work is to develop a new type of carbon-ceramic membranes for the removal of pharmaceutical substances from water. The membranes were prepared by the chemical modification method using an organosilicon precursor—octadecyltrichlorosilane (ODTS). Graphene oxide, multi-walled carbon nanotubes with carboxylic groups, and single-walled carbon nanotubes were used in the modification process. The filtration properties and adsorption properties of the developed membranes were tested. In order to characterize the membrane, the water permeability, the change of the permeate flux in time, and the adsorbed mass of the substance were determined. Additionally, the surface properties of the membranes were characterized by contact angle measurements and porosimetry. The antibiotic tetracycline was used in the adsorption tests. Based on the results, the improved adsorption properties of the modified membrane in relation to the unmodified membrane were noticed. Novel ceramic membranes modified with MWCNT are characterized by 45.4% removal of tetracycline and permeate flux of 520 L·h·m⁻²·bar⁻¹. We demonstrated the ability of modified membranes to adsorb pharmaceuticals from water streams that are in contact with the membrane. Novel membranes retain their filtration properties. Therefore, such membranes can be used in an integrated filtration–adsorption process.

Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products in Different Matrices: Occurrence, Pathways, and Treatment Processes

The procedures for analyzing pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) are typically tedious and expensive and thus, it is necessary to synthesize all available information from previously conducted research. An extensive collection of PPCP data from the published literature was compiled to determine the occurrence, pathways, and the effectiveness of current treatment technologies for the removal of PPCPs in water and wastewater. Approximately 90% of the compiled published papers originated from Asia, Europe, and the North American regions. The incomplete removal of PPCPs in different water and wastewater treatment processes was widely reported, thus resulting in the occurrence of PPCP compounds in various environmental compartments. Caffeine, carbamazepine, diclofenac, ibuprofen, triclosan, and triclocarban were among the most commonly reported compounds detected in water and solid matrices. Trace concentrations of PPCPs were also detected on plants and animal tissues, indicating the bioaccumulative properties of some PPCP compounds. A significant lack of studies regarding the presence of PPCPs in animal and plant samples was identified in the review. Furthermore, there were still knowledge gaps on the ecotoxicity, sub-lethal effects, and effective treatment processes for PPCPs. The knowledge gaps identified in this study can be used to devise a more effective research paradigm and guidelines for PPCP management.

Removal of diclofenac by a local bacterial consortium: UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS analysis of metabolites and ecotoxicity assessment

Diclofenac (DCF) belongs to the class of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, which is one of the most consumed by population and detected in raw sewage. Several studies have reported variable removal rates by biodegradation of diclofenac in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). This study deals with the evaluation of the biodegradation of DCF by a bacterial consortium (obtained from pure cultures of Enterobacter hormaechei D15 and Enterobacter cloacea D16), which were isolated from household compost and Algerian WWTP, respectively, as sole carbon source and by co-metabolism, using glucose as carbon source. A 98% removal rate of DCF was observed when it is used as the sole carbon source, whilst only 44% of DCF was removed in co-metabolic conditions. Two metabolites were identified using ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to electrospray injection tandem mass spectrometry analysis (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS); one of them was identified as 4'-hydroxy-DCF, and the second metabolite was suspected to be a nitro derivative of DCF, according to comparison with the literature. Biodegradation of DCF by this bacterial consortium generates relatively safe final by-products.

Biodegradation of Emerging Pharmaceuticals from Domestic Wastewater by Membrane Bioreactor: The Effect of Solid Retention Time

Although conventional biological treatment plants can remove basic pollutants, they are ineffective at removing recalcitrant pollutants. Membrane bioreactors contain promising technology and have the advantages of better effluent quality and lower sludge production compared to those of conventional biological treatment processes. In this study, the removal of pharmaceutical compounds by membrane bioreactors under different solid retention times (SRTs) was investigated. To study the effect of SRT on the removal of emerging pharmaceuticals, the levels of pharmaceuticals were measured over 96 days for the following retention times: 20, 30, and 40-day SRT. It was found that the 40-day SRT had the optimum performance in terms of the pharmaceuticals’ elimination. The removal efficiencies of the chemical oxygen demand (COD) for each selected SRT were higher than 96% at steady-state conditions. The highest degradation efficiency was observed for paracetamol. Paracetamol was the most removed compound followed by ranitidine, atenolol, bezafibrate, diclofenac, and carbamazepine. The microbial community at the phylum level was also analyzed to understand the biodegradability of pharmaceuticals. It was noticed that the Proteobacteria phylum increased from 46.8% to 60.0% after 96 days with the pharmaceuticals. The Actinobacteria class, which can metabolize paracetamol, carbamazepine, and atenolol, was also increased from 9.1% to 17.9% after adding pharmaceuticals. The by-products of diclofenac, bezafibrate, and carbamazepine were observed in the effluent samples.

A review on analytical methods for pharmaceutical and personal care products and their transformation products

Pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) and corresponding transformation products have caused widespread concern due to their persistent emissions and potential toxicity. They have wide octanol-water partition coefficients (K_ow) and different ionization constants (pK_a) resulting in a poor analysis accuracy and efficiency. A suitable analytical method is the first prerequisite for further research on their environmental behavior to prioritize the substances. This study reviewed a full-scale analytical protocol for environmental samples in the recent ten years: from sampling to instrumental methods. Passive sampling techniques were compared and recommended for long-term continuous and scientific observation. A quick and effective sample extraction and clean-up method are highly required. Chromatographic methods coupled to mass spectrometry for determining PPCPs with a wide range of logK_ow (-7.53 to 10.80) were summed up. High-resolution mass spectrometry was confirmed to be a promising strategy for screening unknown transformation products, which would provide a nanogram level of detection limits and more accurate mass resolution. Screening strategies and mass change principles were summarized in detail. The recovery rate was important in multiple contaminants analysis identification and factors affecting the recovery rate of PPCPs were also discussed in this review, including sample matrix, target compounds characteristics, extraction method and solid-phase adsorbent. This review provides useful information for the selection of appropriate analytical methods and future development directions.

Degradation of trimethoprim in aqueous by persulfate activated with nanosecond pulsed gas-liquid discharge plasma

The persulfate activation by nanosecond pulsed gas-liquid discharge (NPG-LD) is employed to degrade the trimethoprim (TMP) in water. The results show that persulfate addition enhances the degradation of TMP by NPG-LD through an obvious synergetic effect. With treatment time of 50 min, the high removal efficiency and energy yield reach 94.6% and 0.57 gkWh^-1 in air NPG-LD with the addition of persulfate, respectively, which is 13.5% and 0.09 gkWh^-1 higher than that in solo air NPG-LD, respectively. Correspondingly, the calculated synergetic factor achieves 1.62, indicating the synergetic effect is established. The activation mechanism of persulfate by NPG-LD is analyzed by the measurement of reactive species and the effects of radical scavenger addition on TMP removal. It is found that the synergetic effect between NPG-LD and persulfate is attributed to the increased production of OH, H₂O₂, and . Besides, the TMP degradation by NPG-LD and persulfate synergetic system is influenced by discharge working gas, pulse voltage, addition dosage of persulfate, initial TMP concentration, and initial pH value. Subsequently, the degradation pathway of TMP is analyzed using LC-MS/MS.
