Response and acclimation of cyanobacteria to acidification: A comprehensive review

Cyanobacteria, as vital components of aquatic ecosystems, face increasing challenges due to acidification driven by various anthropogenic and natural factors. Understanding how cyanobacteria adapt and respond to acidification is crucial for predicting their ecological dynamics and potential impacts on ecosystem health. This comprehensive review synthesizes current knowledge on the acclimation mechanisms and responses of cyanobacteria to acidification stress. Detailly, ecological roles of cyanobacteria were firstly briefly concluded, followed by the effects of acidification on aquatic ecosystems and cyanobacteria. Then the review focuses on the physiological, biochemical, and molecular strategies employed by cyanobacteria to cope with acidification stress, highlighting key adaptive mechanisms and their ecological implications. Finally, a summary of strategies to enhance acid resistance in cyanobacteria and future directions was discussed. Utilizing omics data and machine learning technology to build a cyanobacterial acid regulatory network allows for predicting the impact of acidification on cyanobacteria and inferring its broader effects on ecosystems. Additionally, acquiring acid-tolerant chassis cells of cyanobacteria through innovative techniques facilitates the advancement of environmentally friendly production of acidic chemicals. By synthesizing empirical evidence and theoretical frameworks, this review aims to elucidate the complex interplay between cyanobacteria and acidification stressors, providing insights for future research directions and ecosystem management strategies.

Advances in microalgae-based carbon sequestration: Current status and future perspectives

The advancement in carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration technology has received significant attention due to the adverse effects of CO2 on climate. The mitigation of the adverse effects of CO2 can be accomplished through its conversion into useful products or renewable fuels. In this regard, microalgae is a promising candidate due to its high photosynthesis efficiency, sustainability, and eco-friendly nature. Microalgae utilizes CO2 in the process of photosynthesis and generates biomass that can be utilized to produce various valuable products such as supplements, chemicals, cosmetics, biofuels, and other value-added products. However, at present microalgae cultivation is still restricted to producing value-added products due to high cultivation costs and lower CO2 sequestration efficiency of algal strains. Therefore, it is very crucial to develop novel techniques that can be cost-effective and enhance microalgal carbon sequestration efficiency. The main aim of the present manuscript is to explain how to optimize microalgal CO2 sequestration, integrate valuable product generation, and explore novel techniques like genetic manipulations, phytohormones, quantum dots, and AI tools to enhance the efficiency of CO2 sequestration. Additionally, this review provides an overview of the mass flow of different microalgae and their biorefinery, life cycle assessment (LCA) for achieving net-zero CO2 emissions, and the advantages, challenges, and future perspectives of current technologies. All of the reviewed approaches efficiently enhance microalgal CO2 sequestration and integrate value-added compound production, creating a green and economically profitable process.

Interaction patterns and keystone taxa of bacterial and eukaryotic communities during sulfamethoxazole mineralization in lake sediment

Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) is a common antibiotic pollutant in aquatic environments, which is highly persistent under various conditions and significantly contributes to the spread of antibiotic resistance. Biodegradation is the major pathway to eliminate antibiotics in the natural environment. The roles of bacteria and eukaryotes in the biodegradation of antibiotics have received considerable attention; however, their successions and co-occurrence patterns during the biodegradation of antibiotics remain unexplored. In this study, 13C-labled SMX was amended to sediment samples from Zhushan Bay (ZS), West Shore (WS), and Gonghu Bay (GH) in Taihu Lake to explore the interplay of bacterial and eukaryotic communities during a 30-day incubation period. The cumulative SMX mineralization on day 30 ranged from 5.2 % to 19.3 %, which was the highest in WS and the lowest in GH. The bacterial community showed larger within-group interactions than between-group interactions, and the positive interactions decreased during incubation. However, the eukaryotic community displayed larger between-group interactions than within-group interactions, and the positive interactions increased during incubation. The proportion of negative interactions between bacteria and eukaryotes increased during incubation. Fifty genera (including 46 bacterial and 4 eukaryotic genera) were identified as the keystone taxa due to their dominance in the co-occurrence network and tolerance to SMX. The cumulative relative abundance of these keystone taxa significantly increased during incubation and was consistent with the SMX mineralization rate. These taxa closely cooperated and played vital roles in co-occurrence networks and microbial community interactions, signifying their crucial role in SMX mineralization. These findings broadened our understanding of the complex interactions of microorganisms under SMX exposure and their potential functions during SMX mineralization, providing valuable insights for in situ bioremediation.

Toxicological effects and mechanisms of lithium on growth, photosynthesis and antioxidant system in the freshwater microalga Chromochloris zofingiensis

The growing prevalence of lithium (Li) batteries has drawn public attention to Li as an emerging pollutant. The present study investigates the toxicity of Li+ on Chromochloris zofingiensis, examining physiological, biochemical and omics aspects. Results reveal hormesis effects of Li+ on C. zofingiensis growth. At Li+ concentrations below 5 mg L-1, Li+ can enhance chlorophyll content, mitochondrial activity, and antioxidant capacity, leading to increased dry cell weight and cell number. Conversely, when it exceeded 10 mg L-1, Li+ can reduce chlorophyll content, induce oxidative stress, and disrupt chloroplast and mitochondria structure and function, ultimately impeding cell growth. In addition, under 50 mg L-1 Li+ stress, microalgae optimize absorbed light energy use (increasing Fv/Fm and E TR ) and respond to stress by up-regulating genes in starch and lipid biosynthesis pathways, promoting the accumulation of storage components. Weighted gene co-expression network analysis indicates that peptidylprolyl cis/trans isomerase, GTPase and L-ascorbate oxidase might be the key regulators in response to Li+ stress. This research marks the toxic effects and molecular mechanisms of Li+ on freshwater microalga, which would improve our understanding of Li's toxicology and contributing to the establishment of Li pollution standards.

Harnessing the potential of microalgae-based systems for mitigating pesticide pollution and its impact on their metabolism

Due to increased pesticide usage in agriculture, a significant concentration of pesticides is reported in the environment that can directly impact humans, aquatic flora, and fauna. Utilizing microalgae-based systems for pesticide removal is becoming more popular because of their environmentally friendly nature, ability to degrade pesticide molecules into simpler, nontoxic molecules, and cost-effectiveness of the technology. Thus, this review focused on the efficiency, mechanisms, and factors governing pesticide removal using microalgae-based systems and their effect on microalgal metabolism. A wide range of pesticides, like atrazine, cypermethrin, malathion, trichlorfon, thiacloprid, etc., can be effectively removed by different microalgal strains. Some species of Chlorella, Chlamydomonas, Scenedesmus, Nostoc, etc., are documented for >90% removal of different pesticides, mainly through the biodegradation mechanism. The antioxidant enzymes such as ascorbate peroxidase, superoxide dismutase, and catalase, as well as the complex structure of microalgae cell walls, are mainly involved in eliminating pesticides and are also crucial for the defense mechanism of microalgae against reactive oxygen species. However, higher pesticide concentrations may alter the biochemical composition and gene expression associated with microalgal growth and metabolism, which may vary depending on the type of strain, the pesticide type, and the concentration. The final section of this review discussed the challenges and prospects of how microalgae can become a successful tool to remediate pesticides.

Efficient elimination of carbamazepine using polyacrylonitrile-supported pyridine bridged iron phthalocyanine nanofibers by activating peroxymonosulfate in dark condition

The monoaminotrinitro iron phthalocyanine (FeMATNPc) is used to connect with isonicotinic acid (INA) for amide bonding and axial coordination to synthetic a unique catalyst FeMATNPc-INA, which is loaded in polyacrylonitrile (PAN) nanofibers by electrospinning. The introduction of INA destroys the π-π conjugated stack structure in phthalocyanine molecules and exposes more active sites. The FeMATNPc-INA structure is characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and UV-visible absorption spectrum, and the FeMATNPc-INA/PAN structure is characterized by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The FeMATNPc-INA/PAN can effectively activate peroxymonosulfate (PMS) to eliminate carbamazepine (CBZ) within 40 minutes (PMS 1.5 mmol/L) in the dark. The effects of catalyst dosage, PMS concentration, pH and inorganic anion on the degradation of CBZ are investigated. It has been confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance, gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy and free radical capture experiments that the catalytic system is degraded by •OH, SO4•- and Fe (IV) = O are the major active species, the singlet oxygen (1O2) is the secondary active species. The degradation process of CBZ is analyzed by ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry and the aromatic compounds have been degraded to small molecular acids.

Multi-omics analysis reveals the toxic mechanism of ammonia-enhanced Microcystis aeruginosa exposure causing liver fat deposition and muscle nutrient loss in zebrafish

Microcystis aeruginosa and ammonia pollution are two important environmental stress factors in water eutrophication. Herein, we simulated environmental conditions to investigate the effects of chronic exposure (single and combined) to M. aeruginosa and total ammonia nitrogen (TAN) on lipid metabolism and muscle quality in zebrafish. Our results showed that M. aeruginosa and TAN significantly induced lipid deposition and tissue damage in the liver of zebrafish. Liver transcriptomic analysis revealed that M. aeruginosa and TAN disrupted the balance in lipid synthesis, decomposition, and transport, ultimately leading to hepatic lipid accumulation. Moreover, exposure to M. aeruginosa or TAN alone resulted in decreased crude protein content and increased lipid content in muscle, as well as disrupted muscle fatty acid composition. Metabolomic analysis of muscle revealed significant alterations in metabolites such as glycerolipids, glycerophospholipids and fatty acids. The co-exposure of M. aeruginosa and TAN had a more significant effect on liver lipid dysfunction and muscle quality deterioration in zebrafish. These findings provide valuable insights into the potential risks and hazards of M. aeruginosa and TAN in eutrophic water bodies subject to Microcystis blooms, and can help inform effective strategies for monitoring and managing these toxins in aquatic ecosystems.

The response and anti-stress mechanisms of nitrifying sludge under long-term exposure to CdSe quantum dots

The wide application of CdSe quantum dots (QDs) increases its stress risk to sewage treatment systems. This study evaluated the response of nitrification performance, floc characteristics and microbial community of nitrifying sludge under long-term exposure to CdSe QDs. Results showed CdSe QDs (≥1 mg/L) would decrease the activity of ammonia monooxygenase (AMO). Under the stress of 30 mg/L CdSe QDs, the activity of AMO was reduced by 66%, while the activities of hydroxylamine oxidase and nitrite oxidoreductase were enhanced by 19.1% and 26%, respectively. Thus, the final nitrification effects were not adversely affected, and the production rates of NO2--N and NO3--N were accelerated. Additionally, CdSe QDs improved biomass concentration in sludge and maintained the stability of sludge settleability. High throughput sequencing analysis showed that CdSe QDs evidently reduced the abundance and diversity of microbial community in nitrifying sludge. The abundances of amino acid metabolism and lipid metabolism were enriched. Moreover, CdSe QDs decreased the fluorescence intensity of tryptophan-like protein from 2,326 to 1,179 a.u. in loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and from 3,792 to 3,117 a.u. in tightly bound EPSs. To relieve CdSe QD stress, the polysaccharide content increased from 0.31 to 0.61 mg/g MLSS and intracellular antioxidant defense was activated. With CdSe QD level increasing to 30 mg/L, the total antioxygenic capacity and the activities of catalase were enhanced up to 411% and 143.2%, respectively. Thereby, CdSe QDs had little adverse effects on cell membrane integrity, microbial metabolism and the abundance of Nitrospirae.

Tungsten-based Lindqvist and Keggin type polyoxometalates as efficient photocatalysts for degradation of toxic chemical dyes

Photocatalytic dye degradation employing polyoxometalates (POMs) has been a research focus for several years. We report the facile synthesis of tungsten-based Lindqvist and Keggin-type POMs that degrade toxic chemical dyes, methyl orange (MO) and methylene blue (MB), respectively. The Lindqvist POM, sodium hexatungstate, Na2W6O19, degrades MO under 100 W UV light irradiation within 15 min, whereas the Keggin POM, Ag4PW11VO40, degrades MB under 20 W visible light source within 180 min. The effect of various operating parameters, such as photocatalyst concentration, pH, time, and initial dye concentration, were assessed in the degradation of both dyes. The photoelectrochemical performance of the as-synthesized polyoxometalates shows that the Ag4PW11VO40 shows 2.4 times higher photocurrent density than Na2W6O19 at a potential of 0.9 V vs. Ag/AgCl. Electrochemical impedance analysis reveals that Ag4PW11VO40 exhibits much lower charge transfer resistance as compared to Na2W6O19, which indicates facile charge transfer at the electrode-electrolyte interface. Further Mott-Schottky measurements reveal that both the catalysts possess n-type semiconductivity and the charge carrier concentration of Ag4PW11VO40 (5.89 × 1019 cm-3) is 1.4 times higher as compared to Na2W6O19 (4.25 × 1019 cm-3). This work offers a new paradigm for designing polyoxometalates suitable for efficient photocatalytic degradation of organic dyes.

Metatranscriptome deciphers the effects of non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents on antibiotic resistance and virulence factors in freshwater microcosms

The emergence and transmission of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and virulence factors (VFs) pose health risks to the ecosystem and humans. Understanding how non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents drive the expression of ARGs and VFs in freshwater ecosystems, however, remains large challenges. Here, we employed freshwater microcosms and performed metatranscriptomic analysis to investigate the expression profiles of ARGs and VFs in response to pollutants of non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents, including silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and azoxystrobin. Results showed that AgNPs significantly inhibited the total expression of ARGs and VFs and decreased the number of pathogenic microorganisms expressing these genes. Azoxystrobin increased the total expression of ARGs and VFs, as well as the number of pathogens expressing VFs, but concomitantly reduced the number of pathogens expressing ARGs. Two tested pollutants dramatically changed the expression profiles of ARGs and VFs, with distinct patterns: AgNPs displayed a negative effect, while azoxystrobin showed a positive effect on their expression profiles. Our findings provided a systematical insight to demonstrate that non-antibiotic antimicrobial agents with different mechanisms of action showed various effects on ARGs and VFs, and therefore represented different ecological risks.

The mechanism of different cyanobacterial responses to glyphosate

Glyphosate, the most extensively used herbicide globally, has raised ecotoxicological concerns because it can be transported into the aquatic environment and cause adverse effects on the aquatic system. However, the functional mechanism of glyphosate on cyanobacteria are not completely disentangled. In this study, we selected six common cyanobacteria to evaluate glyphosate effects on cyanobacterial growth in monoculture experiment. Results showed that the growth of five tested cyanobacterial species were promoted under different degrees, and only Pseudanabaena was inhibited by glyphosate. In the phylogenetic tree based on gene sequences of 5-enol-pyruvylshikimate-3-phosphate synthase (EPSPS), a target for glyphosate, we found that the position of Pseudanabaena is the closest to plant, which was sensitive to glyphosate, thereby explaining the inhibitory effect of Pseudanabaena following glyphosate exposure. The primary degraded metabolites or analogs did not induce cyanobacterial growth, laterally demonstrating that glyphosate was used as a source of phosphorus to accelerate cyanobacterial growth because phosphorus levels increased in the medium of glyphosate treatment. Overall, this study provides a better understanding of the influence of glyphosate on the composition of aquatic microbiota and explains the mechanism of cyanobacterial response to glyphosate.

The mechanism of nanoparticle toxicity to cyanobacteria

The demand for nanoparticles is increasing tremendously, and so is the risk of their foreseeable discharge into the environment. Nanoparticles contain a variety of features, including anti-microbial properties, and have been shown to have toxic effects on aquatic organisms previously. However, the causes of nanoparticle toxicity under environmental conditions are still unknown. Exposure to nanoparticles in the environment is unavoidable as nanomaterials are used more prevalent in our daily lives, and as a result, nanotoxicity research is gaining traction. To understand the impact of nanoparticle toxicity on aquatic biota, cyanobacteria (blue-green algae) are an ideal model system. The cyanobacteria play an important role in ecological balance, nutrient cycling, energy flow, biological nitrogen fixation, and environmental remediation, and their susceptibility to nanoparticles can help in making a wise strategy for the mitigation of possible nano-pollution. This article presents an analysis of recent research findings on the toxicological influences of nanoparticles on the growth rate, biochemical changes, ultra-structural changes as well as the nanoparticle toxicity mechanisms in cyanobacteria. The finding suggests that the shading effect, generation of reactive oxygen species, membrane damage and disintegration of pigments are the main reasons for nanoparticle toxicity to the cyanobacteria.

Comprehensive Analysis of the Association between Human Diseases and Water Pollutants

Drinking water is an important natural resource. For many people worldwide, especially in developing countries, access to safe drinking water is still a dream. An increasing number of human activities and industrialization have caused various physical, chemical, and biological pollutants to enter water bodies, affecting human health. Water pollutants contain a vast number of additives, such as perfluorinated chemicals, polybrominated diphenyl ethers, phthalate, nanomaterials, insecticides, microcystins, heavy metals, and pharmacologies. In this work, we aim to explore the potential relationship between water pollutants and human diseases. Here, we explored an integrative approach to identify genes, biological processes, molecular functions, and diseases linked to exposure to these water pollutants. These processes and functions affected by water pollutants are related to many diseases, including colonic neoplasms, breast neoplasms, hepatitis B, bladder cancer, and human cytomegalovirus infection. In addition, further analysis revealed the genes that play a key role in the human diseases induced by water pollutants. Therefore, conducting an integrative toxicogenomic analysis of water pollutants is more appropriate for evaluating the potential effects of water pollutants on human health.

Analysis of the Impact of the Presence of Phylum Cyanobacteria in the Microbiome of Patients with Breast Cancer on Their Prognosis

Cyanobacterial blooms caused by Cyanobacteria adversely affect the health of the people living in their vicinity. We elucidated the effect of Cyanobacteria in patients with breast cancer. The serum microbiome of the patients with breast cancer was analyzed using NGS. Serologic tests were performed to analyze the association between the factors affecting the liver function of patients with breast cancer and the amount of Cyanobacteria. In addition, the recurrent-free survival of patients with breast cancer according to the abundance of Cyanobacteria was analyzed. The abundance of Cyanobacteria tended to be correlated with the serological results related to liver function. A high abundance of Cyanobacteria seemed to be more related to late-stage breast cancer. A high recurrent-free survival was related to a low abundance of Cyanobacteria. Even though no toxicity study was conducted, this study demonstrates the impact of phylum Cyanobacteria on the prognosis of patients with breast cancer. Thus, the abundance of Cyanobacteria in the microbiome can help predict the prognosis of patients with breast cancer.

A high-precision prediction for spatiotemporal distribution and risk assessment of antibiotics in an urban watershed using a hydrodynamic model

A methodology for the high-precision prediction and risk assessment of antibiotics at the watershed scale was established. Antibiotic emission inventory and attenuation processes were integrated into the MIKE 11 model to predict the spatiotemporal distribution of norfloxacin, ofloxacin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, roxithromycin, and sulfamethoxazole in the Nanfei River watershed, China. Considering the variations in antibiotic removal in sewage treatment plants, manure composting, and lagoon systems, the high, medium, and low removal efficiencies of selected antibiotics across China were obtained and used as the best, expected, and worst scenarios, respectively, to evaluate the uncertainty of antibiotic emissions. The predicted concentrations were comparable to antibiotic measurements after flow calibration. The prediction results showed that the highest concentration exposures were mainly concentrated in urban areas with a dense population. Flow variations controlled the temporal distribution characteristics of antibiotics via the dilution effect, and the concentrations of antibiotics in the dry season were 3.1 times higher than those in the wet season. The median concentrations of norfloxacin and erythromycin ranged from 111.36 ng/L to 592.33 ng/L and 106.63 ng/L to 563.01 ng/L, respectively, which both posed a high risk to cyanobacteria and a medium risk to spreading antibiotic resistance. Scenario analysis further demonstrated that high removal efficiencies of these antibiotics can considerably reduce the potential ecotoxicity risks and bacterial resistance selection. The developed methodology for predicting the distribution and risk of antibiotics was suitable for the risk assessment and control strategy of human- and livestock-sourced pollutants.

Evaluation of phoxim toxicity on aquatic and zebrafish intestinal microbiota by metagenomics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing analysis

Phoxim is one of the main organophosphorus pesticides used in agricultural production. However, little information is known about how it affects the aquatic microbial community and the intestinal microbiota of fish. Herein, we utilized shotgun metagenomics and 16S rRNA gene sequencing to reveal the aquatic eco-risk of phoxim. Seven days of phoxim exposure significantly changed the composition of aquatic microbial community, obliterated the interactions between microorganisms, and thus reduced the complexity and stability of the microbial community. During long-time exposure (i.e., 14 days), most of the ecological functions were restored due to the redundancy of the microbial community. However, phoxim exposure promoted the dissemination of elfamycin resistance gene. The zebrafish gut microbial community also recovered from a temporary ecological disorder of aquatic microbiota, but phoxim continually affected zebrafish growth and swimming behavior. Overall, our results demonstrated that phoxim exposure significantly changed the structure and function of the microbial community and displayed a negative impact on freshwater ecosystems in a short exposure time.

Roadmap of environmental health research on emerging contaminants: Inspiration from the studies on engineered nanomaterials

Research on the environmental health of emerging contaminants is critical to understand their risks before causing severe harm. However, the low environmental concentrations, complex behaviors, and toxicology of emerging contaminants present enormous challenges for researchers. Here, we reviewed the research on the environmental health of engineered nanomaterials (ENMs), one of the typical emerging contaminants, to enlighten pathways for future research on emerging contaminants at their initial exploratory stage. To date, some developed pretreatment methods and detection technologies have been established for the determination of ENMs in natural environments. The mechanisms underlying the transfer and transformation of ENMs have been systematically explored in laboratory studies. The mechanisms of ENMs-induced toxicity have also been preliminarily clarified at genetic, cellular, individual, and short food chain levels, providing not only a theoretical basis for revealing the risk change and environmental health effects of ENMs in natural environments but also a methodological guidance for studying environmental health of other emerging contaminants. Nonetheless, due to the interaction of multiple environmental factors and the high diversity of organisms in natural environments, health effects observed in laboratory studies likely differ from those in natural environments. We propose a holistic approach and mesocosmic model ecosystems to systematically carry out environmental health research on emerging contaminants, obtaining data that determine the objectivity and accuracy of risk assessment.

A critical review on diverse technologies for advanced wastewater treatment during SARS-CoV-2 pandemic: What do we know?

Advanced wastewater treatment technologies are effective methods and currently attract growing attention, especially in arid and semi-arid areas, for reusing water, reducing water pollution, and explicitly declining, inactivating, or removing SARS-CoV-2. Overall, removing organic matter and micropollutants prior to wastewater reuse is critical, considering that water reclamation can help provide a crop irrigation system and domestic purified water. Advanced wastewater treatment processes are highly recommended for contaminants such as monovalent ions from an abiotic source and SARS-CoV-2 from an abiotic source. This work introduces the fundamental knowledge of various methods in advanced water treatment, including membranes, filtration, Ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, ozonation, chlorination, advanced oxidation processes, activated carbon (AC), and algae. Following that, an analysis of each process for organic matter removal and mitigation or prevention of SARS-CoV-2 contamination is discussed. Next, a comprehensive overview of recent advances and breakthroughs is provided for each technology. Finally, the advantages and disadvantages of each method are discussed.

TiO2 nanoparticles exert an adverse effect on aquatic microbial communities

Titanium dioxide nanoparticle (n-TiO₂) is a widely used nanomaterial, which is inevitably released as a residue into aquatic ecosystems during material production and usage. However, the effects of n-TiO₂ on aquatic microbial communities have not been completely elucidated. This study examined the toxic effects of n-TiO₂ on eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbial communities in freshwater environments. We determined that n-TiO₂ had a greater inhibitory effect on the growth of eukaryotic algae than cyanobacteria in monocultures. A similar phenomenon was observed in a microcosm experiment, revealing that n-TiO₂ slightly reduced the content of chlorophyll-a but evidently increased the phycocyanin content. Moreover, the alpha diversity of the eukaryotic community was not affected, whereas its beta diversity increased with exposure to n-TiO₂. Although n-TiO₂ altered the composition of freshwater microbial communities, it did not change the functions of the prokaryotic community, which might be attributed to the functional redundancy of microbiota. Co-occurrence network analysis indicated that n-TiO₂ destabilized the freshwater community, especially the eukaryotic community, and potentially disturbed the aquatic ecosystem. Our study revealed that the ecological risk of n-TiO₂ on aquatic microbial communities is complex; hence, rational utilization of n-TiO₂ should be emphasized.

Machine learning predicts the impact of antibiotic properties on the composition and functioning of bacterial community in aquatic habitats

In the past decades, hundreds of antibiotics have been isolated from microbial metabolites or have been artificially synthesized for protecting humans, animals and crops from microbial infections. Their everlasting usage results in impacts on the microbial community composition and causes well-known collateral damage to the functioning of microbial communities. Nevertheless, the impact of different antibiotic properties on aquatic microbial communities have so far only poorly been disentangled. Here we characterized the environmental risk of 50 main kinds of antibiotics from 9 classes at a concentration of 10 μg/L for aquatic bacterial communities via metadata analysis combined with machine learning. Metadata analysis showed that the alpha diversity of the bacterial community increased only after treatment with aminoglycoside and β-lactam antibiotics, while its structure was changed by almost all tested antibiotics. The antibiotic treatment also disturbed the functions of the bacterial community, especially with regard to metabolic pathways, including amino acids, cofactors, vitamins, xenobiotics and carbohydrate metabolism. The critical characteristics (atom stereocenter count, number of hydrogen atoms in the antibiotic, and the adipose water coefficient) of antibiotics affecting the composition of the bacterial community in aquatic habitats were screened by machine learning. The key characteristics of antibiotics affecting the function bacterial communities were the number of hydrogen atoms, molecular weight and complexity. In summary, by developing machine learning models and by performing metadata analysis, this study provides the relationship between the properties of antibiotics and their adverse impacts on aquatic microbial communities from a macro perspective. The study also provides guidance for the rational design of antibiotics.

Metagenomic ecotoxicity assessment of trace difenoconazole on freshwater microbial community

Difenoconazole, a typical triazole fungicide, inhibits the activity of cytochrome P450 enzyme in fungi, and is extensively used in protecting fruits, vegetables, and cereal crops. However, reports elucidating the effects of difenoconazole on aquatic microbial communities are limited. Our study showed that difenoconazole promoted microalgae growth at concentrations ranging from 0.1 to 5 μg/L, which was similar with its environmental residual concentrations. Metagenomic analysis revealed that the aquatic microbial structure could self-regulate to cope with difenoconazole-induced stress by accumulating bacteria exhibiting pollutant degrading abilities. In the short-term, several functional pathways related to xenobiotic biodegradation and analysis were upregulated to provide ability for aquatic microbial community to process xenobiotic stress. Moreover, most disturbed ecological functions were recovered due to the redundancy of microbial communities after prolonged exposure. Furthermore, the risks associated with the dissemination of antibiotic resistance genes were enhanced by difenoconazole in the short-term. Overall, our study contributes to a comprehensive understanding of the difenoconazole-induced ecological impacts and the behavior of aquatic microbial communities that are coping with xenobiotic stress.

Proteomics analysis reveals several metabolic alterations in cyanobacterium Anabaena sp. NC-K1 in response to alpha-cypermethrin exposure

In the current study, the effect of the EC₅₀ and LC₉₀ concentrations of pyrethroid insecticide alpha-cypermethrin to cyanobacteria Anabaena sp. NC-K1 was investigated at different time exposures (1st day, 4th day and 7th day) with reference to growth, photosynthetic pigments, oxidative damage and antioxidant defence system. Superoxide dismutase (1.38-fold), peroxidase (5.04) and proline content (2.27-fold) were enhanced compared to the control. After performing 2D gel electrophoresis at 1st day EC₅₀ exposure, where appropriate differences in the biochemical and physiological parameters were observed, 22 differentially accumulated proteins (20 upregulated and 2 downregulated) were selected for mass spectrometry. Out of 42 proteins identified, 20 upregulated protein spots were classified into twelve categories according to their metabolic functions. Proteins related to photosynthesis (phycobilisome rod-core linker polypeptide, rubisco), stress responses (Hsp70, Hsp40, catalase family peroxidase), translation (elongation factor Tu) and amino acid biosynthesis and metabolism (3-phosphoshikimate 1-carboxyvinyl transferase) were significantly upregulated. Additionally, proteins involved in transcription and DNA repair (Snf-2 histone linker phd ring helicase, RNA polymerase sigma factor RpoD and Holliday junction ATP-dependent DNA helicase RuvA) were considerably upregulated. Upregulation of these proteins against pesticide stress presumably maintained the photosynthesis, energy metabolism, carbohydrate metabolism, transport and signalling proteins, transcription, translation and DNA repair. Additionally, these proteins might involve in sufficient detoxification of ROS and play a crucial role in damage removal and repair of oxidized proteins, lipids and nucleic acids. Taken together, Anabaena sp. NC-K1 responded towards alpha-cypermethrin stress via modulating its proteome to maintain its cellular metabolism and homeostasis.

Revealing the synergistic effects of cells, pigments, and light spectra on light transfer during microalgae growth: A comprehensive light attenuation model

As the sole energy for photosynthesis, light decrease rapidly with path due to absorption by pigments and scattering by cells in microalgal suspensions. By comprehensively considering cell concentrations, pigment components, and light spectra, a modified Cornet model for light transmission in microalgal suspensions is established. The developed model better fits experimental data with a higher adjusted R², which is 5% higher than the model that is based only on cell concentration. The attenuation of blue light is the most severe, followed by red and green light. Among the three main pigments, total carotenoids contribute the most to the absorption of blue and green light (with contribution coefficients of 89.26 ± 4.53% and 46.04 ± 3.77%, respectively), and chlorophyll a contributes the most to the absorption of red light (with a contribution coefficient of 75.33 ± 5.08%). This study provides a better understanding and prediction of light transmission during microalgal cultivation.

Effects of ofloxacin on the structure and function of freshwater microbial communities

Ofloxacin (OFL) is a broad-spectrum fluoroquinolone antibiotic frequently used in clinic for treating bacterial infections. The discharged OFL would inevitably enter into aquatic ecosystems, affecting the growth of non-target microorganisms, which may result in micro-ecosystem imbalance. To the best of our knowledge, researches in this area are rather sparse. The present study evaluated the response of photosynthetic microorganisms (cyanobacteria, eukaryotic algae) and aquatic microbial community to OFL in a microcosm. Results showed that ofloxacin presented an inhibitory effect on the growth Microcystis aeruginosa. Although 0.1 mg/L OFL has no significant impact on alpha diversity of the microbial communities, it obviously altered the structure and decreased the species interaction of prokaryotic community by reducing the capacities of nitrogen fixation, photosynthetic and metabolic capacity of the microbial community. This study pointed out that the residual OFL in water would disturb the balance of the aquatic micro-ecology, suggesting that more attentions should be given to the negative effects of antibiotics and other bioactive pollutants on aquatic environments.

Persistent organic pollutants: The trade-off between potential risks and sustainable remediation methods

Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) have become a very serious issue for the environment because of their toxicity, resistance to conventional degradation mechanisms, and capacity to bioconcentrate, bioaccumulate and biomagnify. In this review article, the safety, regulatory, and remediation aspects of POPs including aromatic, chlorinated, pesticides, brominated, and fluorinated compounds, are discussed. Industrial and agricultural activities are identified as the main sources of these harmful chemicals, which are released to air, soil and water, impacting on social and economic development of society at a global scale. The main types of POPs are presented, illustrating their effects on wildlife and human beings, as well as the ways in which they contaminate the food chain. Some of the most promising and innovative technologies developed for the removal of POPs from water are discussed, contrasting their advantages and disadvantages with those of more conventional treatment processes. The promising methods presented in this work include bioremediation, advanced oxidation, ionizing radiation, and nanotechnology. Finally, some alternatives to define more efficient approaches to overcome the impacts that POPs cause in the hydric sources are pointed out. These alternatives include the formulation of policies, regulations and custom-made legislation for controlling the use of these pollutants.

Phycoremediation of wastewater for pollutant removal: A green approach to environmental protection and long-term remediation

Surface and water bodies in many parts of the world are affected due to eutrophication, contamination and depletion. The approach of wastewater treatment using algae for eliminating nutrients and other pollutants from domestic wastewater is growing interest among the researchers. However, sustainable treatment of the wastewater is considered to be important in establishing more effective nutrient and pollutant reduction using algal systems. In comparison to the conventional method of remediation, there are opportunities to commercially viable businesses interest with phycoremediation, thus by achieving cost reductions and renewable bioenergy options. Phycoremediation is an intriguing stage for treating wastewater since it provides tertiary bio-treatment while producing potentially valuable biomass that may be used for a variety of applications. Furthermore, the phycoremediation provides the ability to remove heavy metals as well as harmful organic substances, without producing secondary contamination. In this review, the role of microalgae in treating different wastewaters and the process parameters affecting the treatment and future scope of research have been discussed. Though several algae are employed for wastewater treatment, species of the genera Chlamydomonas, Chlorella, and Scenedesmus are extensively utilized. Interestingly, there is a vast scope for employing algal species with high flocculation capacity and adsorption mechanisms for the elimination of microplastics. In addition, the algal biomass generated during phycoremediation has been found to possess high protein and lipid contents, promising their exploitation in biofuel, food and animal feed industries.

Proteomic analysis of zebrafish brain damage induced by Microcystis aeruginosa bloom

Cyanobacterial blooms constitute a global ecological problem that can seriously threaten human health. One of the most common bloom-forming cyanobacteria in freshwater is Microcystis aeruginosa, whose secretion of toxic substances (microcystins, MCs) have strong liver toxicity and endanger the health of exposed people through contaminated aquatic products and drinking water. However, few studies on the neurotoxicity of M. aeruginosa to zebrafish have simulated the process of an actual cyanobacterial bloom. In this study, we used the zebrafish (Danio rerio) as an effective model organism to study the acute neurotoxicity of M. aeruginosa, and to clarify its principal mechanism of action. A total of 82 upregulated and 26 downregulated proteins were detected by quantitative proteomics analysis in zebrafish brain after exposure to M. aeruginosa. Intriguingly, these proteins with changed expression were related to Synaptic vesicle cycle and terpenoid skeleton biosynthesis pathway, such as ACAT, STX1A, and V-ATPase. The obtained results uniformly indicated that the neurotoxicity of M. aeruginosa seriously damaged the neurotransmitter conduction in the nervous system and brain information storage and transmission of zebrafish and makes it more susceptible to neurological diseases. Our study provides a new perspective on the neurotoxicity risk of cyanobacterial blooms.

Detection of the maximum resistance to the herbicides diuron and glyphosate, and evaluation of its phenotypic cost, in freshwater phytoplankton

One of the most important anthropogenic impacts on freshwater aquatic ecosystems close to intensive agriculture areas is the cumulative increase in herbicide concentrations. The threat is especially relevant for phytoplankton organisms because they have the same physiological targets as the plants for which herbicides have been designed. This led us to explore the evolutionary response of three phytoplanktonic species to increasing concentrations of two herbicides and its consequences in terms of growth and photosynthesis performance. Specifically, we used an experimental ratchet protocol to investigate the differential evolution and the limit of resistance of a cyanobacterium (Microcystis aeruginosa) and two chlorophyceans (Chlamydomonas reinhardtii and Dictyosphaerium chlorelloides) to two herbicides in worldwide use: glyphosate and diuron. Initially, the growth rate of M. aeruginosa and D. chlorelloides was completely inhibited when they were exposed to a dose of 0.23 ppm diuron or 40 ppm glyphosate, whereas a higher concentration of both herbicides (0.46 ppm diuron or 90 ppm glyphosate) was necessary to abolish C. reinhardtii growth. However, after running a ratchet protocol, the resistance of the three species to both herbicides increased by an adaptation process. M. aeruginosa and D. chlorelloides were able to grow at 1.84 ppm diuron and 80 ppm glyphosate and C. reinhardtii proliferated at twice these concentrations. Herbicide-resistant strains showed lower growth rates than their wild-type counterparts in the absence of herbicides, as well as changes on morphology and differences on photosynthetic pigment content. Besides, herbicide-resistant cells generally showed a lower photosynthetic performance than wild-type strains in the three species. These results indicate that the introduction of both herbicides in freshwater ecosystems could produce a diminution of primary production due to the selection of herbicide-resistant mutants, that would exhibit lower photosynthetic performance than wild-type populations.

Potential hazards of biochar: The negative environmental impacts of biochar applications

Biochar has been widely used as an environmentally friendly material for soil improvement and remediation, water pollution control, greenhouse gas emission reduction, and other purposes because of its characteristics such as a large surface area, porous structure, and abundant surface O-containing functional groups. However, some surface properties (i.e., (i) some surface properties (i.e., organic functional groups and inorganic components), (ii) changes in pH), and (iii) chemical reactions (e.g., aromatic C ring oxidation) that occur between biochar and the application environment may result in the release of harmful components. In this study, biochars with a potential risk to the environment were classified according to their harmful components, surface properties, structure, and particle size, and the potential negative environmental effects of these biochars and the mechanisms inducing these negative effects were reviewed. This article presents a comprehensive overview of the negative environmental impacts of biochar on soil, water, and atmospheric environments. It also summarizes various technical methods of environment-related risk detection and evaluation of biochar application, thereby providing a baseline reference and guiding significance for future biochar selection and toxicity detection, evaluation, and avoidance.

Nano-Sized Polystyrene at 1 mg/L Concentrations Does Not Show Strong Disturbance on the Freshwater Microbial Community

In recent years, microplastics and nanoplastics have gained public attention, but their impacts on the freshwater microbial communities is rarely evaluated. In this study, the effects of 1 mg/L nano-sized polystyrene (nPS) and its modified forms (carboxyl-modified and amino-modified nPS) on the structures and functions of freshwater microbial community were determined. The nPS were found to slightly reduce the chlorophyll-a and increase the phycocyanin contents of freshwater microbial communities. Moreover, the richness of the microbial communities temporarily decreased during this process, while their diversity remained uninfluenced by treatment with nPS. Although the three tested nPS types were found to disturb the compositions of both the prokaryotic and eukaryotic communities to some degree, they did not affect the functions of freshwater bacterial communities significantly due to functional redundancy. Our study demonstrated that the ecotoxicities of the nPS itself were found to be lower than what is generally expected.

Meta-transcriptomic profiling of functional variation of freshwater microbial communities induced by an antidepressant sertraline hydrochloride

Sertraline hydrochloride (Ser-HCl) is an effective and commonly used antidepressant drug, which is also frequently detected in aquatic environments. Our previous research showed that Ser-HCl changes the community composition of aquatic microbiome, but the understanding of the expression of functional pathways in microbial communities is still incomplete; to address this knowledge gap, we used meta-transcriptomics analysis to evaluate the toxicity of Ser-HCl to natural aquatic microbial communities cultured in laboratory microcosms. Meta-transcriptomic results show that a 15-day exposure to 50 μg/L Ser-HCl significantly changed the functional expression activity of aquatic microbial communities. Pathways related to lipid metabolism, energy metabolism, membrane transport function, and genetic information processing in the aquatic microbial community were severely inhibited under Ser-HCl treatment, but metabolism of cofactors and vitamins to alleviate biological toxicity after Ser-HCl exposure was enhanced. Our study thus reveals details of the effects of sertraline on the functioning of aquatic microbiome. Due to the extensive use of Ser-HCl and its strong biological activity, it should not continue to be an overlooked pollutant. Therefore, more attention should be paid to the negative effects of such biologically active drugs on the expression of aquatic microbiome.

Application of polyoxometalates in photocatalytic degradation of organic pollutants

Organic pollutants are highly toxic, accumulative, and difficult to degrade or eliminate. As a low-cost, high-efficiency and energy-saving environmental purification technology, photocatalytic technology has shown great advantages in solving increasingly serious environmental pollution problems. The development of efficient and durable photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants is the key to the extensive application of photocatalysis technology. Polyoxometalates (POMs) are a kind of discrete metal-oxide clusters with unique photo/electric properties which have shown promising applications in photocatalytic degradation. This review summarizes the recent advances in the design and synthesis of POM-based photocatalysts, as well as their application in the degradation of organic dyes, pesticides and other pollutants. In-depth perspective views are also proposed in this review.

Toxicity of copper on marine diatoms, Chaetoceros calcitrans and Nitzchia closterium from Cochin estuary, India

The effects of copper (Cu) toxicity on the growth, pigments, protein, carbohydrate, lipid and antioxidant enzyme activities of two endemic microalgae, Chaetoceros calcitrans and Nitzchia closterium from Cochin estuary were studied and compared. The 96 h median inhibition concentration (IC₅₀) of Cu for C. calcitrans was 143.8 µg L^-1 and that for N. closterium was 204.5 µg L^-1. No observable effect concentration (NOEC), lowest observable effect concentration (LOEC) and chronic value of Cu on C. calcitrans were 17.93 µg L^-1, 31.91 µg L^-1and 24.92 µg L^-1 respectively, whereas that for N. closterium were 18.35 µg L^-1, 36.04 µg L^-1 and 27.2 µg L^-1 respectively. Chlorophyll a and c showed significant variation from the control at NOEC in both species. Carotenoid content showed significant increase at LOEC. The chlorophyll a/c ratio significantly decreased at NOEC and LOEC of N. closterium. In N. closterium catalase (CAT) activity showed significant increase at NOEC and LOEC, but in C. calcitrans it varied significantly above LOEC. Protein content showed a significant decrease at NOEC of C. calcitrans. No significant variation was observed for N. closterium. Carbohydrate showed significant variation between the species at NOEC. Lipid content varied significantly at NOEC of C. calcitrans. Chaetoceros calcitrans was observed to be more sensitive to copper toxicity than N. closterium. The metal stress tolerance mechanism of N. closterium and its bioremediation capacity can be established in further studies. This study also provides an insight on the biochemical changes that happened at NOEC.

Effect of Dissolved Organic Matter Concentration and Source on the Chronic Toxicity of Copper and Nickel Mixtures to Chlorella sp

There have been limited studies on the effects of toxicity-modifying factors, such as dissolved organic matter (DOM), on the toxicity of metal mixtures to aquatic biota. The present study investigated the effects of DOM concentration (low, 2.8 ± 0.1 mg C/L; high, 11 ± 1.0 mg C/L) and DOM source (predominantly terrestrial or microbial) on the chronic toxicity of copper (Cu) and nickel (Ni) binary mixtures to the green freshwater microalga Chlorella sp. This was assessed by using a full factorial design of 72-h growth inhibition bioassays. Measured algal growth rate was compared with growth predicted by the concentration addition and independent action reference models. Model predictions were based on concentrations of dissolved metals, labile metals (measured by diffusive gradients in thin films [DGT]), and calculated free metal ions (determined by the Windermere Humic Aqueous Model). Copper/Ni mixture toxicity was synergistic to Chlorella sp. in the absence of added DOM, with evidence of metal concentration-dependent toxicity at low effect concentrations. As DOM concentration increased, the mixture interaction changed from synergism to noninteraction or antagonism depending on the metal speciation method used. The DOM source had no significant effect on mixture interaction when based on dissolved and free metal ion concentrations but was significantly different when based on DGT-labile metal concentrations. Ratio-dependent mixture interaction was observed in all treatments, with increased deviation from the reference model predictions as the mixture changed from Ni- to Cu-dominated. The present study demonstrated that both DOM concentration and source can significantly change metal mixture toxicity interactions and that these interactions can be interpreted differently depending on the metal speciation method used. An AFM-IR study on surface properties of nano-TiO2 coated polyethylene (PE) thin film as influenced by photocatalytic aging process

Most plastic wastes undergo extensive photo-aging in the environment, and the aged plastics exhibit different surface properties from pristine ones. Here, we investigate the surface properties of a nano-TiO₂ coated polyethylene (PE) film as influenced by photocatalytic aging process using an atomic force microscopy coupled with infrared spectroscopy (AFM-IR) technique. Results showed that the height range of the as-prepared samples was about 30 nm, and the equivalent diameter of nano-TiO₂ was ~70 nm. The photo-induced oxidation of the CH₂ bond occurred on the surface of the PE film. Photo-aging mainly affected the thermal properties of PE film in a local area, especially affecting the components surrounding the nano-TiO₂ particle. The glass transition temperature of unaged PE film mainly changed in the range of 93.9-96.5 °C, but after aging the temperature gradually increased with the distance to nano-TiO₂ increasing from near to far. The plastic film surrounding the nano-TiO₂ particle became stiffer after photo-aging, and the photocatalytic reaction had an effect on the stiffness of the film material. The second characteristic peaks with resonance deviations (i.e., 110, 112, and 115 kHz) were used for Lorentz contact resonance (LCR) measurements. The mechanical properties of PE film after photo-aging were closely related to the distance between nano-TiO₂ and film surface. These research findings are conducive for us to understand better the photo-induced aging process of functional plastic film.

Removal of micron-scale microplastic particles from different waters with efficient tool of surface-functionalized microbubbles

Microplastic (MP) contamination in water has garnered significantly global concerns. The MP removal particularly challenges when the particle size decreases to several microns and other contaminants co-exist. This study used the coagulative colloidal gas aphrons (CCGAs) to simultaneously remove the micron-scale MP particles (~5 µm in diameter) and dissolved organic matter (DOM). Carboxyl-modified poly-(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) and unsurface-coated polystyrene (PS) were chosen as target MPs. Over 94% of PS particles and almost 100% of color were simultaneously removed with lower CCGA consumption than the scenarios with either contaminant in water. The PMMA removal was not as high as the PS removal since the HA polyanions could compete with the negatively-charged PMMA for CCGAs. High salinity reduced the removal of HA by changing its interfacial behaviors without impacting the MP separation. In river water or influent of wastewater treatment plant, the MP particles were almost completely eliminated whereas the DOM (tyrosine-like or tryptophan-like) was partially removed. The fluorescence quenching titration revealed that CCGAs preferably captured the free DOM and the DOM-coated MP particles through complexation interaction. The study denoted that the CCGA system could be a robust tool for efficiently and synergistically removing micron-scale MPs and DOM from different water matrixes.
