Abstract
Zeaxanthin, a vital dietary carotenoid, is naturally synthesized by plants, microalgae, and certain microorganisms. Large-scale zeaxanthin production can be achieved through plant extraction, chemical synthesis, or microbial fermentation. The environmental and health implications of the first two methods have made microbial fermentation an appealing alternative for natural zeaxanthin production despite the challenges in scaling up the bioprocess. An intermediate between β-carotene and zeaxanthin, β-cryptoxanthin, is found only in specific fruits and vegetables and has several important functions for human health. The low concentration of β-cryptoxanthin in these sources results in low extraction yields, making biotechnological production a promising alternative for achieving higher yields. Currently, there is no industrially relevant microbial fermentation process for β-cryptoxanthin production, primarily due to the lack of identified enzymes that specifically convert β-carotene to β-cryptoxanthin without further conversion to zeaxanthin. In this study, we used genetic engineering to leverage the oleaginous yeast Yarrowia lipolytica as a bio-factory for zeaxanthin and β-cryptoxanthin production. We screened 22 β-carotene hydroxylases and identified eight novel enzymes with β-carotene hydroxylating activity: six producing zeaxanthin and two producing only β-cryptoxanthin. By introducing the β-carotene hydroxylase from the bacterium Chondromyces crocatus (CcBCH), a β-cryptoxanthin titer of 24 ± 6 mg/L was achieved, representing the highest reported titer of sole β-cryptoxanthin in Y. lipolytica to date. By targeting zeaxanthin-producing β-carotene hydroxylase to the endoplasmic reticulum and peroxisomes, we increased the production of zeaxanthin by 54% and 66%, respectively, compared to untargeted enzyme. The highest zeaxanthin titer of 412 ± 34 mg/L was achieved by targeting β-carotene hydroxylases to peroxisomes. In addition, by constructing multienzyme scaffold-free complexes with short peptide tags RIDD and RIAD, we observed a 39% increase in the zeaxanthin titer and a 28% increase in the conversion rate compared to the strain expressing unmodified enzyme. The zeaxanthin titers obtained in this study are not the highest reported; however, our goal was to demonstrate that specific approaches can enhance both titer and conversion rate, rather than to achieve the maximum titer. These findings underscore the potential of Y. lipolytica as a promising platform for carotenoid production and provide a foundation for future research, where further optimization is required to maximize production.

Abstract
Important marine microorganisms are resources of renewable energy that may face global population growth and needs. The application of biomass metabolites, such as carotenoids and their derivatives, may solve some agro-food health problems. Herein, a new halophilic Archaea Halobacterium salinarum producing carotenoid was screened from a Tunisian solar Saltworks (Sfax). The identification of the carotenoid pigments was carried out using HPLC-MS/MS. The predominant pigments produced by this Halobacterium were bacterioruberin and its derivatives and the carotenoids production was found to be of 21.51 mg/mL. Moreover, the data revealed that the carotenoids extract exhibited a high antioxidant activity across four oxidizing assays. The present results suggested that carotenoids extracted from halophilic Archaea are interesting sources of natural antioxidants for future innovative applications in agro-food, cosmetic and health fields.

Abstract
Sulfide biomineralization is a microorganism-induced process for transforming the environmentally hazardous cadmium into useful resource utilization. This study successfully constructed cadmium sulfide nanoparticles-Rhodopseudomonas palustris (Bio-CdS NPs-R. palustris) hybrids. For the self-assembling hybrids, Bio-CdS NPs were treated as new artificial-antennas to enhance photosynthesis, especially under low light (LL). Bacterial physiological results of hybrids were significantly increased, particularly for cells under LL, with higher enhancement photon harvesting ability. The enhancement included the pigment contents, and the ratio of the peripheral light-harvesting complex Ⅱ (LH2) to light-harvesting Ⅰ (1.33 ± 0.01 under LL), leading to the improvements of light-harvesting, transfer, and antenna conversion efficiencies. Finally, the stimulated electron chain of hybrids improved bacterial metabolism with increased nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH, 174.5% under LL) and adenosine triphosphate (ATP, 41.1% under LL). Furthermore, the modified photosynthetic units were induced by the up-regulated expression of fixK, which was activated by reduced oxygen tension of the medium for hybrids. fixK up-regulated genes encoding pigments (crt, and bch) and complexes (puf, pucAB, and pucC), leading to improved light-harvesting and transfer, and transform ability. This study provides a comprehensive understanding of the solar energy utilization mechanism of in-situ semiconductor-phototrophic microbe hybrids, contributing to further theoretical insight into their practical application.

Abstract
Carotenoids are high added-value products primarily known for their intense coloration and high antioxidant activity. They can be extracted from a variety of natural sources, such as plants, animals, microalgae, yeasts, and bacteria. Gordonia alkanivorans strain 1B is a bacterium recognized as a hyper-pigment producer. However, due to its adaptations to its natural habitat, hydrocarbon-contaminated soils, strain 1B is resistant to different organic solvents, making carotenoid extraction through conventional methods more laborious and inefficient. Ionic liquids (ILs) have been abundantly shown to increase carotenoid extraction in plants, microalgae, and yeast; however, there is limited information regarding bacterial carotenoid extraction, especially for the Gordonia genus. Therefore, the main goal of this study was to evaluate the potential of ILs to mediate bacterial carotenoid extraction and develop a method to achieve higher yields with fewer pre-processing steps. In this context, an initial screening was performed with biomass of strain 1B and nineteen different ILs in various conditions, revealing that tributyl(ethyl)phosphonium diethyl phosphate (IL#18), combined with ethyl acetate (EAc) as a co-solvent, presented the highest level of carotenoid extraction. Afterward, to better understand the process and optimize the extraction results, two experimental designs were performed, varying the amounts of IL#18 and EAc used. These allowed the establishment of 50 µL of IL#18 with 1125 µL of EAc, for 400 µL of biomass (cell suspension with about 36 g/L), as the ideal conditions to achieve maximal carotenoid extraction. Compared to the conventional extraction method using DMSO, this novel procedure eliminates the need for biomass drying, reduces extraction temperatures from 50 °C to 22 ± 2 °C, and increases carotenoid extraction by 264%, allowing a near-complete recovery of carotenoids contained in the biomass. These results highlight the great potential of ILs for bacterial carotenoid extraction, increasing the process efficiency, while potentially reducing energy consumption, related costs, and emissions.

Abstract
Fermentation is resurgent around the world as people seek healthier, more sustainable, and tasty food options. This study explores the microbial ecology of miso, a traditional Japanese fermented paste, made with novel regional substrates to develop new plant-based foods. Eight novel miso varieties were developed using different protein-rich substrates: yellow peas, Gotland lentils, and fava beans (each with two treatments: standard and nixtamalisation), as well as rye bread and soybeans. The misos were produced at Noma, a restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark. Samples were analysed with biological and technical triplicates at the beginning and end of fermentation. We also incorporated in this study six samples of novel misos produced following the same recipe at Inua, a former affiliate restaurant of Noma in Tokyo, Japan. To analyse microbial community structure and diversity, metabarcoding (16S and ITS) and shotgun metagenomic analyses were performed. The misos contain a greater range of microbes than is currently described for miso in the literature. The composition of the novel yellow pea misos was notably similar to the traditional soybean ones, suggesting they are a good alternative, which supports our culinary collaborators' sensory conclusions. For bacteria, we found that overall substrate had the strongest effect, followed by time, treatment (nixtamalisation), and geography. For fungi, there was a slightly stronger effect of geography and a mild effect of substrate, and no significant effects for treatment or time. Based on an analysis of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), strains of Staphylococccus epidermidis differentiated according to substrate. Carotenoid biosynthesis genes in these MAGs appeared in strains from Japan but not from Denmark, suggesting a possible gene-level geographical effect. The benign and possibly functional presence of S. epidermidis in these misos, a species typically associated with the human skin microbiome, suggests possible adaptation to the miso niche, and the flow of microbes between bodies and foods in certain fermentation as more common than is currently recognised. This study improves our understanding of miso ecology, highlights the potential for developing novel misos using diverse local ingredients, and suggests how fermentation innovation can contribute to studies of microbial ecology and evolution.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a chronic retinal disease that significantly influences the vision of the elderly. PURPOSE There is no effective treatment and prevention method. The pathogenic process behind AMD is complex, including oxidative stress, inflammation, and neovascularization. It has been demonstrated that several natural products can be used to manage AMD, but systematic summaries are lacking. STUDY DESIGN AND METHODS PubMed, Web of Science, and ClinicalTrials.gov were searched using the keywords "Biological Products" AND "Macular Degeneration" for studies published within the last decade until May 2023 to summarize the latest findings on the prevention and treatment of age-related macular degeneration through the herbal medicines and functional foods. RESULTS The eligible studies were screened, and the relevant information about the therapeutic action and mechanism of natural products used to treat AMD was extracted. Our findings demonstrate that natural substances, including retinol, phenols, and other natural products, prevent the development of new blood vessels and protect the retina from oxidative stress in cells and animal models. However, they have barely been examined in clinical studies. CONCLUSION Natural products could be highly prospective candidate drugs used to treat AMD, and further preclinical and clinical research is required to validate it to control the disease.

Abstract
Carotenoids, with their diverse biological activities and potential pharmaceutical applications, have garnered significant attention as essential nutraceuticals. Microalgae, as natural producers of these bioactive compounds, offer a promising avenue for sustainable and cost-effective carotenoid production. Despite the ability to cultivate microalgae for its high-value carotenoids with health benefits, only astaxanthin and β-carotene are produced on a commercial scale by Haematococcus pluvialis and Dunaliella salina, respectively. This review explores recent advancements in genetic engineering and cultivation strategies to enhance the production of lutein by microalgae. Techniques such as random mutagenesis, genetic engineering, including CRISPR technology and multi-omics approaches, are discussed in detail for their impact on improving lutein production. Innovative cultivation strategies are compared, highlighting their advantages and challenges. The paper concludes by identifying future research directions, challenges, and proposing strategies for the continued advancement of cost-effective and genetically engineered microalgal carotenoids for pharmaceutical applications.

Abstract
In this study, we tried to explore the influence of various tricarboxylic acid (TCA) cycle intermediates on carotenoid production and with a focus on enhancing pigment biosynthesis, we conducted two statistical analysis. In case of TCA intermediates influence on pigment production by Paracoccus marcusii RSPO1; fumaric acid, and malic acid were observed as potent enhancers of pigment biosynthesis. Further, to optimize key media components for enhanced carotenoid production, the Plackett-Burman design was employed encompassing carbon, nitrogen sources, TCA cycle intermediates, and metal salts. The selected factors after Plackett Burman were fine-tuned through Response Surface Methodology and the optimal concentrations that have remarkably elevated carotenoid production were starch-2.24 g/l, MgSO4-0.416 g/l, ZnSO4-0.0157 g/l, and fumaric Acid-16 mM. Further, evaluation of pigment cytotoxicity against normal (Vero) and Non-Small Cell Carcinoma (A549) cells was performed. The resultant IC50 values were quantified as 161.3 µg/ml and 7.623 µg/ml for Vero and A549 cells, respectively. Moreover, a reactive oxygen species (ROS) determination study in A549 cells was done which have shown a noteworthy threefold ROS production in A549 cells through fluorescence spectroscopic observation. This implies that the bacterial carotenoids can act as potent pro-oxidants against cancerous cells while being nontoxic toward normal cells.

Abstract
Given their multifaceted roles, carotenoids have garnered significant scientific interest, resulting in a comprehensive and intricate body of literature that occasionally presents conflicting findings concerning the proper characterization, quantification, and bioavailability of these compounds. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that the pursuit of novel carotenoids remains a crucial endeavor, as their diverse properties, functionalities and potential health benefits make them invaluable natural resources in agri-food and health promotion through the diet. In this framework, particular attention is given to ketocarotenoids, viz., astaxanthin (one of them) stands out for its possible multifunctional role as an antioxidant, anticancer, and antimicrobial agent. It has been widely explored in the market and utilized in different applications such as nutraceuticals, food additives, among others. Adonirubin and adonixanthin can be naturally found in plants and microorganisms. Due to the increasing significance of natural-based products and the remarkable opportunity to introduce these ketocarotenoids to the market, this review aims to provide an expert overview of the pros and cons associated with adonirubin and adonixanthin.

Abstract
Rhodotorula spp. has been studied as one powerful source for a novel cell factory with fast growth and its high added-value biomolecules. However, its inadequate genome and genomic annotation have hindered its widespread use in cosmetics and food industries. Rhodotorula glutinis QYH-2023, was isolated from rice rhizosphere soil, and the highest quality of the genome of the strain was obtained at chromosome level (18 chromosomes) than ever before in red yeast in this study. Comparative genomics analysis revealed that there are more key gene copies of carotenoids biosynthesis in R. glutinis QYH-2023 than other species of Rhodotorula spp. Integrated transcriptome and metabolome analysis revealed that lipids and carotenoids biosynthesis was significantly enriched during fermentation. Subsequent investigation revealed that the over-expression of the strain three genes related to carotenoids biosynthesis in Komagataella phaffii significantly promoted the carotenoid production. Furthermore, in vitro tests initially confirmed that the longer the fermentation period, the synthesized metabolites controlled by R. glutinis QYH-2023 genome had the stronger anti-inflammatory properties. All of the findings revealed a high-quality reference genome which highlight the potential of R. glutinis strains to be employed as chassis cells for biosynthesizing carotenoids and other active chemicals.

Abstract
The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, a significant collection of plastic introduced by human activities, provides an ideal environment to study bacterial lifestyles on plastic substrates. We proposed that bacteria colonizing the floating plastic debris would develop strategies to deal with the ultraviolet-exposed substrate, such as the production of antioxidant pigments. We observed a variety of pigmentation in 67 strains that were directly cultivated from plastic pieces sampled from the Garbage Patch. The genomic analysis of four representative strains, each distinct in taxonomy, revealed multiple pathways for carotenoid production. These pathways include those that produce less common carotenoids and a cluster of photosynthetic genes. This cluster appears to originate from a potentially new species of the Rhodobacteraceae family. This represents the first report of an aerobic anoxygenic photoheterotrophic bacterium from plastic biofilms. Spectral analysis showed that the bacteria actively produce carotenoids, such as beta-carotene and beta-cryptoxanthin, and bacteriochlorophyll a. Furthermore, we discovered that the genetic ability to synthesize carotenoids is more common in plastic biofilms than in the surrounding water communities. Our findings suggest that plastic biofilms could be an overlooked source of bacteria-produced carotenoids, including rare forms. It also suggests that photoreactive molecules might play a crucial role in bacterial biofilm communities in surface water.

Abstract
During the course of the isolation of actinobacteria from sweet potato field soils collected from Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province of Thailand, strain TS4A08T was isolated and subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic approach. The 16S rRNA gene sequence analysis of strain TS4A08T revealed that it is closely related to the type strains of Saccharopolyspora aridisoli, and Saccharopolyspora endophytica with 98.7%, and 98.6% similarity, respectively. However, phylogenetic analyses using 16S rRNA gene and genome sequences indicated that strain TS4A08T clustered with Saccharopolyspora flava AS4.1520T (98.2% similarity), well-supported by bootstrap values, and formed distinct line from the two closest strains. The average nucleotide identity (ANI) values and digital DNA-DNA hybridization (dDDH) values between the genome sequences of strain TS4A08T and the closest type strains of S. aridisoli, S. endophytica, and S. flava, were 86.1-93.2% and 33.1-49.6%, respectively, which were less than the threshold for the species delineation. The genome size and the DNA G + C content of strain TS4A08T were 6.6 Mbp and 70.5%, respectively. The strain grew well at 25-37 °C, pH range of 7-9, and NaCl concentration of 0-5% (w/v). Whole-cell hydrolysates contained meso-diaminopimelic acid. The major fatty acids were iso-C16:0, anteiso-C17:0, and iso-C15:0. Strain TS4A08T exhibited phosphatidylcholine in its polar lipid profile, with MK-9(H4) being the predominant isoprenologue. The strain exhibits typical chemotaxonomic properties of the genus Saccharopolyspora, including arabinose, galactose, and ribose as whole-cell sugars. Strain TS4A08T represents a novel species within the genus Saccharopolyspora, for which the name Saccharopolyspora ipomoeae sp. nov. is proposed. The type strain is TS4A08T (= TBRC 17271T = NBRC 115967T).

Abstract
From the prehistoric period, the utilization of pigments as colouring agents was an integral part of human life. Early people may have utilized paint for aesthetic motives, according to archaeologists. The pigments are either naturally derived or synthesized in the laboratory. Different studies reported that certain synthetic colouring compounds were toxic and had adverse health and environmental effects. Therefore, knowing the drawbacks of these synthetic colouring agents now scientists are attracted towards the harmless natural pigments. The main sources of natural pigments are plants, animals or microorganisms. Out of these natural pigments, microorganisms are the most important source for the production and application of bioactive secondary metabolites. Among all kinds of microorganisms, bacteria have specific benefits due to their short life cycle, low sensitivity to seasonal and climatic variations, ease of scaling, and ability to create pigments of various colours. Based on these physical characteristics, bacterial pigments appear to be a promising sector for novel biotechnological applications, ranging from functional food production to the development of new pharmaceuticals and biomedical therapies. This review summarizes the need for bacterial pigments, biosynthetic pathways of carotenoids and different applications of bacterial pigments.

Abstract
Flavobacterium can synthesize xanthophyll, particularly the pigment zeaxanthin, which has significant economic value in nutrition and pharmaceuticals. Recently, the use of carotenoid biosynthesis by bacteria and yeast fermentation technology has shown to be very efficient and offers significant advantages in large-scale production, cost-effectiveness, and safety. In the present study, JSWR-1 strain capable of producing xanthophyll pigment was isolated from a freshwater reservoir in Wanju-gun, Republic of Korea. Based on the morphological, physiological, and molecular characteristics, JSWR-1 classified as belonging to the Flavobacterium species. The bacterium is strictly aerobic, Gram-negative, rod-shaped, and psychrophilic. The completed genome sequence of the strain Flavobacterium sp. JSWR-1 is predicted to be a single circular 3,425,829-bp chromosome with a G+C content of 35.2% and 2,941 protein-coding genes. The optimization of carotenoid production was achieved by small-scale cultivation, resulting in zeaxanthin being identified as the predominant carotenoid pigment. The enhancement of zeaxanthin biosynthesis by applying different light-irradiation, variations in pH and temperature, and adding carbon and nitrogen supplies to the growth medium. A significant increase in intracellular zeaxanthin concentrations was also recorded during fed-batch fermentation achieving a maximum of 16.69 ± 0.71 mg/l, corresponding to a product yield of 4.05 ± 0.15 mg zeaxanthin per gram cell dry weight. Batch and fed-batch culture extracts exhibit significant antioxidant activity. The results demonstrated that the JSWR-1 strain can potentially serve as a source for zeaxanthin biosynthesis.

Abstract
Staphylococcus aureus is an opportunistic pathogen that is considered a global health threat. This microorganism can adapt to hostile conditions by regulating membrane lipid composition in response to external stress factors such as changes in pH and ionic strength. S. aureus synthesizes and incorporates in its membrane staphyloxanthin, a carotenoid providing protection against oxidative damage and antimicrobial agents. Staphyloxanthin is known to modulate the physical properties of the bacterial membranes due to the rigid diaponeurosporenoic group it contains. In this work, preparative thin layer chromatography and liquid chromatography mass spectrometry were used to purify staphyloxanthin from S. aureus and characterize its structure, identifying C15, C17 and C19 as the main fatty acids in this carotenoid. Changes in the biophysical properties of models of S. aureus membranes containing phosphatidylglycerol, cardiolipin, and staphyloxanthin were evaluated. Infrared spectroscopy shows that staphyloxanthin reduces the liquid-crystalline to gel phase transition temperature in the evaluated model systems. Interestingly, these shifts are not accompanied by strong changes in trans/gauche isomerization, indicating that chain conformation in the liquid-crystalline phase is not altered by staphyloxanthin. In contrast, headgroup spacing, measured by Laurdan GP fluorescence spectroscopy, and lipid core dynamics, measured by DPH fluorescence anisotropy, show significant shifts in the presence of staphyloxanthin. The combined results show that staphyloxanthin reduces lipid core dynamics and headgroup spacing without altering acyl chain conformations, therefore decoupling these normally correlated effects. We propose that the rigid diaponeurosporenoic group in staphyloxanthin and its positioning in the membrane is likely responsible for the results observed.

Abstract
Carotenoids, as a type of tetraterpene compound, have been widely used in food, medical, and health areas owing to their antioxidant, immune enhancement, and disease risk reduction effects. Rhodosporidium toruloides is a promising oleaginous red yeast that can industrially synthesize carotenoids. In this study, the effects of different light exposure times and intervals on carotenoid production by R. toruloides Z11 were first investigated. Results showed that a higher carotenoid content (1.29 mg/g) can be achieved when R. toruloides Z11 was exposed to light for 12 h per day, which was increased by 1.98 times compared with that of dark cultivation. Transcriptome profiling revealed that light stress could effectively promote the gene expression levels of GGPS1 and AL1 in the carotenoid biosynthesis pathway and phr in the DNA photolysis pathway of R. toruloides. This work will provide a molecular foundation to further improve the production efficiency of carotenoids by genetic engineering.

Abstract
Haloarchaea produce bacterioruberin, a major C50 carotenoid with antioxidant properties that allow for its potential application in the food, cosmetic, and pharmaceutical industries. This study aimed to optimize culture conditions for total carotenoid, predominantly comprising bacterioruberin, production using Halorubrum ruber MBLA0099. A one-factor-at-a-time and statistically-based experimental design were applied to optimize the culture conditions. Culture in the optimized medium caused an increase in total carotenoid production from 0.496 to 1.966 mg L- 1 Maximal carotenoid productivity was achieved in a 7-L laboratory-scale fermentation and represented a 6.05-fold increase (0.492 mg L-1 d-1). The carotenoid extracts from strain MBLA0099 exhibited a 1.8-10.3-fold higher antioxidant activity in vitro, and allowed for a higher survival rate of Caenorhabditis elegans under oxidative stress conditions. These results demonstrated that Hrr. ruber MBLA0099 has significant potential as a haloarchaon for the commercial production of bacterioruberin.

Abstract
A novel endophytic bacterium, designated DY-R2A-6T, was isolated from oat (Avena sativa L.) seeds and found to produces β-carotene. Phylogenetic analysis based on 16S rRNA gene sequences revealed that strain DY-R2A-6T had 96.3% similarity with Jiella aquimaris LZB041T, 96.0% similarity with Aurantimonas aggregate R14M6T and Aureimonas frigidaquae JCM 14755T, and less than 95.8% similarity with other genera in the family Aurantimonadaceae. The complete genome of strain DY-R2A-6T comprised 5,929,370 base pairs, consisting of one full chromosome (5,909,198 bp) and one plasmid (20,172 bp), with a G + C content was 69.1%. The overall genome-related index (OGRI), including digital DNA-DNA hybridization (<20.5%), ANI (<79.2%), and AAI (<64.2%) values, all fell below the thresholds set for novel genera. The major cellular fatty acids (>10%) of strain DY-R2A-6T were C16:0, C19:0 cyclo ω8c, and summed feature 8 (C18:1ω7c and/or C18:1ω6c). Ubiquinone-10 was the main respiratory quinone. We identified the gene cluster responsible for carotenoid biosynthesis in the genome and found that the pink-pigment produced by strain DY-R2A-6T is β-carotene. In experiment with Arabidopsis seedlings, co-cultivation with strain DY-R2A-6T led to a 1.4-fold increase in plant biomass and chlorophyll content under salt stress conditions, demonstrating its capacity to enhance salt stress tolerance in plants. Moreover, external application of β-carotene to Arabidopsis seedlings under salt stress conditions also mitigated the stress significantly. Based on these findings, strain DY-R2A-6T is proposed to represent a novel genus and species in the family Aurantimonadaceae, named Jeongeuplla avenae gen. nov., sp. nov. The type strain is DY-R2A-6T (= KCTC 82985T = GDMCC 1.3014T). This study not only identified a new taxon but also utilized genome analysis to predict and confirm the production of β-carotene by strain DY-R2A-6T. It also demonstrated the ability of this strain to enhance salt stress tolerance in plants, suggesting potential application in agriculture to mitigate environmental stress in crops.

Abstract
Lactic acid bacteria are traditionally applied in a variety of fermented food products, and they have the ability to produce a wide range of bioactive ingredients during fermentation, including vitamins, bacteriocins, bioactive peptides, and bioactive compounds. The bioactivity and health benefits associated with these ingredients have garnered interest in applications in the functional dairy market and have relevance both as components produced in situ and as functional additives. This review provides a brief description of the regulations regarding the functional food market in the European Union, as well as an overview of some of the functional dairy products currently available in the Irish and European markets. A better understanding of the production of these ingredients excreted by lactic acid bacteria can further drive the development and innovation of the continuously growing functional food market.

Abstract
The characteristic reddish-pink fillet color of rainbow trout is an important marketing trait. The gastrointestinal microbiome is vital for host health, immunity, and nutrient balance. Host genetics play a crucial role in determining the gut microbiome, and the host-microbiome interaction impacts the host's phenotypic expression. We hypothesized that fecal microbiota could be used to predict fillet color in rainbow trout. Fish were fed Astaxanthin-supplemented feed for six months, after which 16s rDNA sequencing was used to investigate the fecal microbiome composition in rainbow trout families with reddish-pink fillet coloration (red fillet group, average saturation index = 26.50 ± 2.86) compared to families with pale white fillet color (white fillet group, average saturation index = 21.21 ± 3.53). The linear discriminant analysis effect size (LEFse) tool was used to identify bacterial biomarkers associated with fillet color. The alpha diversity measure shows no difference in the red and white fillet groups. Beta diversity principal component analysis showed clustering of the samples along the white versus red fillet group. The red fillet group has enrichment (LDA score > 1.5) of taxa Leuconostoc lactis, Corynebacterium variabile, Jeotgalicoccus halotolerans, and Leucobacter chromiireducens. In contrast, the white fillet group has an enriched presence of mycoplasma, Lachnoclostridium, and Oceanobacillus indicireducens. The enriched bacterial taxa in the red fillet group have probiotic functions and can generate carotenoid pigments. Bacteria taxa enriched in the white fillet group are either commensal, parasitic, or capable of reducing indigo dye. The study identified specific bacterial biomarkers differentially abundant in fish families of divergent fillet color that could be used in genetic selection to improve feed carotenoid retention and reddish-pink fillet color. This work extends our understanding of carotenoid metabolism in rainbow trout through the interaction between gut microbiota and fillet color.

Abstract
Calcium-based kidney stone disease is a highly prevalent and morbid condition, with an often complicated and multifactorial aetiology. An abundance of research on the role of specific vitamins (B6, C and D) in stone formation exists, but no consensus has been reached on how these vitamins influence stone disease. As a consequence of emerging research on the role of the gut microbiota in urolithiasis, previous notions on the contribution of these vitamins to urolithiasis are being reconsidered in the field, and investigation into previously overlooked vitamins (A, E and K) was expanded. Understanding how the microbiota influences host vitamin regulation could help to determine the role of vitamins in stone disease.

Abstract
Carotenoids are a vast group of natural pigments that come in a variety of colors ranging from red to orange. Apocarotenoids are derived from these carotenoids, which are hormones, pigments, retinoids, and volatiles employed in the textiles, cosmetics, pharmaceutical, and food industries. Due to the high commercial value and poor natural host abundance, they are significantly undersupplied. Microbes like Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Escherichia coli act as heterologous hosts for apocarotenoid production. This article briefly reviews categories of apocarotenoids, their biosynthetic pathway commencing from the MVA and MEP, its significance, the tool enzymes for apocarotenoid biosynthesis like CCDs, their biotechnological production in microbial factories, and future perspectives.

Abstract
The oleaginous bacterium Rhodococcus erythropolis JCM3201T offers various unique enzyme capabilities, and it is a potential producer of industrially relevant compounds, such as triacylglycerol and carotenoids. To develop this strain into an efficient production platform, the characterization of the strain's nutritional requirement is necessary. In this work, we investigate its substrate adaptability. Therefore, the strain was cultivated using nine nitrogen and eight carbon sources at a carbon (16 g L-1) and nitrogen (0.16 g L-1) weight ratio of 100:1. The highest biomass accumulation (3.1 ± 0.14 g L-1) was achieved using glucose and ammonium acetate. The highest lipid yield (156.7 ± 23.0 mg g-1DCW) was achieved using glucose and yeast extract after 192 h. In order to enhance the dependent variables: biomass, lipid and carotenoid accumulation after 192 h, for the first time, a central composite design was employed to determine optimal nitrogen and carbon concentrations. Nine different concentrations were tested. The center point was tested in five biological replicates, while all other concentrations were tested in duplicates. While the highest biomass (8.00 ± 0.27 g L-1) was reached at C:N of 18.87 (11 g L-1 carbon, 0.583 g L-1 nitrogen), the highest lipid yield (100.5 ± 4.3 mg g-1DCW) was determined using a medium with 11 g L-1 of carbon and only 0.017 g L-1 of nitrogen. The highest carotenoid yield (0.021 ± 0.001 Abs454nm mg-1DCW) was achieved at a C:N of 12 (6 g L-1 carbon, 0.5 g L-1 nitrogen). The presented results provide new insights into the physiology of R. erythropolis under variable nutritional states, enabling the selection of an optimized media composition for the production of valuable oleochemicals or pigments, such as rare odd-chain fatty acids and monocyclic carotenoids.

Abstract
Food loss and waste are severe social, economic, and environmental issues. An example is the incorrect handling of waste or by-products used to obtain bioactive compounds, such as carotenoids. This review aimed to present a comprehensive overview of research on lycopene, phytoene, and phytofluene obtained from waste and by-products. In this study, an integrative literature approach was coupled with bibliometric analysis to provide a broad perspective of the topic. PRISMA guidelines were used to search studies in the Web of Science database systematically. Articles were included if (1) employed waste or by-products to obtain lycopene, phytoene, and phytofluene or (2) performed applications of the carotenoids previously extracted from waste sources. Two hundred and four articles were included in the study, and the prevalent theme was research on the recovery of lycopene from tomato processing. However, the scarcity of studies on colorless carotenoids (phytoene and phytofluene) was evidenced, although these are generally associated with lycopene. Different technologies were used to extract lycopene from plant matrices, with a clear current trend toward choosing environmentally friendly alternatives. Microbial production of carotenoids from various wastes is a highly competitive alternative to conventional processes. The results described here can guide future forays into the subject, especially regarding research on phytoene and phytofluene, potential and untapped sources of carotenoids from waste and by-products, and in choosing more efficient, safe, and environmentally sustainable extraction protocols.

Abstract
As it is the case with natural substrates, artificial surfaces of man-made devices are home to a myriad of microbial species. Artificial products are not necessarily characterized by human-associated microbiomes; instead, they can present original microbial populations shaped by specific environmental-often extreme-selection pressures. This review provides a detailed insight into the microbial ecology of a range of artificial devices, machines, and appliances, which we argue are specific microbial niches that do not necessarily fit in the "build environment" microbiome definition. Instead, we propose here the Microbiome of Things (MoT) concept analogous to the Internet of Things (IoT) because we believe it may be useful to shed light on human-made, but not necessarily human-related, unexplored microbial niches.

Abstract
Carotenoids are a large group of health-promoting compounds used in many industrial sectors, such as foods, feeds, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, nutraceuticals, and colorants. Considering the global population growth and environmental challenges, it is essential to find new sustainable sources of carotenoids beyond those obtained from agriculture. This review focuses on the potential use of marine archaea, bacteria, algae, and yeast as biological factories of carotenoids. A wide variety of carotenoids, including novel ones, were identified in these organisms. The role of carotenoids in marine organisms and their potential health-promoting actions have also been discussed. Marine organisms have a great capacity to synthesize a wide variety of carotenoids, which can be obtained in a renewable manner without depleting natural resources. Thus, it is concluded that they represent a key sustainable source of carotenoids that could help Europe achieve its Green Deal and Recovery Plan. Additionally, the lack of standards, clinical studies, and toxicity analysis reduces the use of marine organisms as sources of traditional and novel carotenoids. Therefore, further research on the processing of marine organisms, the biosynthetic pathways, extraction procedures, and examination of their content is needed to increase carotenoid productivity, document their safety, and decrease costs for their industrial implementation.

Abstract
Carotenoids are determinants of reproductive fitness and egg quality. Here we studied the accumulation of astaxanthin (AX), canthaxanthin (CA) zeaxanthin (ZX), lutein (LU), retinol (RX) and dehydroretinol (DR) during vitellogenesis comparing previtellogenic and vitellogenic pikeperch (Sander lucioperca) eggs (n = 5 each), as well as selected tissues (liver, fat and muscles) in first süawning females (1176-1450 g). Futhermore, we compared egg batches with high (88-99% hatching rate, n = 5) or low (40-67% hatching rate, n= 5) egg quality. Vitellogenic follicles revealed higher concentrations of DR, RX, ZX and LU compared to previtellogenic follicles. Neither CA nor AX was detectable. In parallel, DR and RX were mobilized in the liver. In adipose and muscle tissue, comparing previtellogenic and vitellogenic females, no significant differences in carotenoid/retinoid content were observed. In high quality egg batches, both DR and RX were increased. LU was lower in high quality than in low quality eggs. In a conclusion, the amount of retinoids seems suboptimal in low quality egg batches and increased DR and RX are desirable in pikeperch. Since hypervitaminosis of retinoids can be problematic though, supplementation of the food with carotenoids, which can serve as precursors for retinoids, has to be carried out carefully.

Abstract
Lycopene β-cyclase (EC 5.5.1.19) is one of the key enzymes in the biosynthesis of β-carotene and derived carotenoids. It catalyzes isomerase reactions to form β-carotene from lycopene by β-cyclization of both of its ψ-ends. Lycopene β-cyclases are widespread in nature. We systematically analyzed the phylogeny of lycopene β-cyclases from all kingdoms of life and predicted their transmembrane structures. To this end, a collection of previously characterized lycopene β-cyclase polypeptide sequences served as bait sequences to identify their closest homologues in a range of bacteria, archaea, fungi, algae, and plant species. Furthermore, a DeepTMHMM scan was applied to search for the presence of transmembrane domains. A phylogenetic tree suggests at least five distinct clades, and the DeepTMHMM scan revealed that lycopene β-cyclases are a group of structurally different proteins: membrane-bound and cytosolic enzymes. Representative lycopene β-cyclases were screened in the lycopene-overproducing Corynebacterium glutamicum strain for β-carotene and astaxanthin production. This systematic screening facilitates the identification of new enzymes for carotenoid production. Higher astaxanthin production and less reduction of total carotenoids were achieved with the cytosolic lycopene β-cyclase CrtL from Synechococcus elongatus and the membrane-bound heterodimeric lycopene β-cyclase CrtYcd from Brevibacterium linens.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although microalgae and plants are traditionally used for obtaining natural pigments, overexploitation and overharvesting threaten them. Bacteria represent a superior alternative for the production of pigments due to their ability to produce greater amounts in a short time without seasonal restrictions; furthermore, bacterial pigments have a wide range of uses and are safe and biodegradable. This study is the first on the production of ß-carotene as a promising bioactive agent from endophytic bacteria. RESULTS The yellow pigment produced by the endophytic bacterium Citricoccus parietis AUCs (NCBI accession number: OQ448507.1) was extracted by methanol and then purified and identified. One band was obtained by TLC analysis, which was identified as ß-carotene based on its spectroscopic and chromatographic characteristics. The pigment exhibited remarkable antibacterial, antioxidant and antidiabetic activities. CONCLUSIONS This research may serve as a valuable starting point for exploiting C. parietis AUCs as a potent source of ß-carotene for biomedical therapies. To validate the findings of this research, in vivo studies must be performed.

Abstract
Natural pigments and colorants have seen a substantial increase in use over the last few decades due to their eco-friendly and safe properties. Currently, customer preferences for more natural products are driving the substitution of natural pigments for synthetic colorants. Filamentous fungi, particularly ascomycetous fungi (Monascus, Fusarium, Penicillium, and Aspergillus), have been shown to produce secondary metabolites containing a wide variety of pigments, including β-carotene, melanins, azaphilones, quinones, flavins, ankaflavin, monascin, anthraquinone, and naphthoquinone. These pigments produce a variety of colors and tints, including yellow, orange, red, green, purple, brown, and blue. Additionally, these pigments have a broad spectrum of pharmacological activities, including immunomodulatory, anticancer, antioxidant, antibacterial, and antiproliferative activities. This review provides an in-depth overview of fungi gathered from diverse sources and lists several probable fungi capable of producing a variety of color hues. The second section discusses how to classify coloring compounds according to their chemical structure, characteristics, biosynthetic processes, application, and present state. Once again, we investigate the possibility of employing fungal polyketide pigments as food coloring, as well as the toxicity and carcinogenicity of particular pigments. This review explores how advanced technologies such as metabolic engineering and nanotechnology can be employed to overcome obstacles associated with the manufacture of mycotoxin-free, food-grade fungal pigments.

Abstract
Carotenoids and squalene are important terpenes that are applied in a wide range of products in foods and cosmetics. Thraustochytrids might be used as alternative production organisms to improve production processes, but the taxon is rarely studied. A screening of 62 strains of thraustochytrids sensu lato for their potential to produce carotenoids and squalene was performed. A phylogenetic tree was built based on 18S rRNA gene sequences for taxonomic classification, revealing eight different clades of thraustochytrids. Design of experiments (DoE) and growth models identified high amounts of glucose (up to 60 g/L) and yeast extract (up to 15 g/L) as important factors for most of the strains. Squalene and carotenoid production was studied by UHPLC-PDA-MS measurements. Cluster analysis of the carotenoid composition partially mirrored the phylogenetic results, indicating a possible use for chemotaxonomy. Strains in five clades produced carotenoids. Squalene was found in all analyzed strains. Carotenoid and squalene synthesis was dependent on the strain, medium composition and solidity. Strains related to Thraustochytrium aureum and Thraustochytriidae sp. are promising candidates for carotenoid synthesis. Strains closely related to Schizochytrium aggregatum might be suitable for squalene production. Thraustochytrium striatum might be a good compromise for the production of both molecule groups.

Abstract
Milk is naturally a rich source of many essential nutrients; therefore, it is quite a suitable medium for bacterial growth and serves as a reservoir for bacterial contamination. The genus Arthrobacter is a food-related bacterial group commonly present as a contaminant in milk and dairy products as primary and secondary microflora. Arthrobacter bacteria frequently demonstrate the nutritional versatility to degrade different compounds even in extreme environments. As a result of their metabolic diversity, Arthrobacter species have long been of interest to scientists for application in various industry and biotechnology sectors. In the dairy industry, strains from the Arthrobacter genus are part of the microflora of raw milk known as an indicator of hygiene quality. Although they cause spoilage, they are also regarded as important strains responsible for producing fermented milk products, especially cheeses. Several Arthrobacter spp. have reported their significance in the development of cheese color and flavor. Furthermore, based on the data obtained from previous studies about its thermostability, and thermoacidophilic and thermoresistant properties, the genus Arthrobacter promisingly provides advantages for use as a potential producer of β-galactosidases to fulfill commercial requirements as its enzymes allow dairy products to be treated under mild conditions. In light of these beneficial aspects derived from Arthrobacter spp. including pigmentation, flavor formation, and enzyme production, this bacterial genus is potentially important for the dairy industry.

Abstract
Energy transfer from light-harvesting ketocarotenoids to the light-driven proton pump xanthorhodopsins has been previously demonstrated in two unique cases: an extreme halophilic bacterium1 and a terrestrial cyanobacterium2. Attempts to find carotenoids that bind and transfer energy to abundant rhodopsin proton pumps3 from marine photoheterotrophs have thus far failed4-6. Here we detected light energy transfer from the widespread hydroxylated carotenoids zeaxanthin and lutein to the retinal moiety of xanthorhodopsins and proteorhodopsins using functional metagenomics combined with chromophore extraction from the environment. The light-harvesting carotenoids transfer up to 42% of the harvested energy in the violet- or blue-light range to the green-light absorbing retinal chromophore. Our data suggest that these antennas may have a substantial effect on rhodopsin phototrophy in the world's lakes, seas and oceans. However, the functional implications of our findings are yet to be discovered.

Abstract
Microbial biomanufacturing, powered by the advances of synthetic biology, has attracted growing interest for the production of diverse products. In contrast to conventional microbes, extremophiles have shown better performance for low-cost production owing to their outstanding growth and synthesis capacity under stress conditions, allowing unsterilized fermentation processes. We review increasing numbers of products already manufactured utilizing extremophiles in recent years. In addition, genetic parts, molecular tools, and manipulation approaches for extremophile engineering are also summarized, and challenges and opportunities are predicted for non-conventional chassis. Next-generation industrial biotechnology (NGIB) based on engineered extremophiles promises to simplify biomanufacturing processes and achieve open and continuous fermentation, without sterilization, and utilizing low-cost substrates, making NGIB an attractive green process for sustainable manufacturing.

Abstract
This study focuses on the development of functional probiotics using caroteonid-producing lactic acid bacteria (LAB) with antioxidant properties. Thirty LAB strains were evaluated for their probiotic properties. Carotenoid biosynthesis gene cluster (crtMN operon) was detected using polymer chain reaction (PCR). The carotenoid identified as 4,4'-diaponeurosporene was analyzed via UV visible absorption spectra and HPLC. Five carotenoid-producing strains showed antioxidant activities. Lactiplantibacillus plantarum MGB0112, which showed the highest carotenoid production measuring at 470 nm of absorbance per ml of culture broth (0.014 A470nm/ml), showed low pH (56.5%) and bile salt (97.8%) tolerance with high adhesion properties (55.1% for toluene). Furthermore, this strain and 4,4'-diaponeurosporene extract exhibited antioxidant activity (99.5 and 40.1%, respectively) against DPPH free radicals in vitro. Their antioxidant properties were confirmed in vivo (45.6 and 55.2% survival rates in Caenorhabditis elegans). Therefore, C30 carotenoid-producing strain MGB0112 demonstrates outstanding antioxidant effects and can be a potential functional probiotics.

Abstract
The acquisition of carotenoids and polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs) from plants and animals for use as functional ingredients raises concerns regarding productivity and cost; utilization of microorganisms as alternative sources is an option. We proposed to evaluate the production of carotenoids and PUFAs by Rhodopseudomonas faecalis PA2 using different vegetable oils (rice bran oil, palm oil, coconut oil, and soybean oil) as carbon source, different concentrations of yeast extract as nitrogen source at different cultivation time to ensure the best production. Cultivation with soybean oil as source of carbon led to the most significant changes in the fatty acid profile. Compared to the initial condition, the strain cultivated in the optimal conditions (4% soybean oil, 0.35% yeast extract, and 14 days of incubation) showed an increase in μmax, biomass, carotenoid productivity, and microbial lipids by 102.5%, 52.7%, 33.82%, and 34.78%, respectively. The unsaturated fatty acids content was raised with additional types of PUFAs; omega-3 [alpha-linolenic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid] and omega-6 [linoleic acid and eicosatrienoic acid] fatty acids were identified. The results of ultra high-performance liquid chromatography-electrospray ionization-quadrupole time of flight-mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-QTOF-MS/MS) indicated the molecular formula and mass of bacterial metabolites were identical to those of lycopene and beta-carotene. The untargeted metabolomics revealed functional lipids and several physiologically bioactive compounds. The outcome provides scientific reference regarding carotenoids, PUFAs, and useful metabolites that have not yet been reported in the species Rhodopseudomonas faecalis for further use as a microbial-based functional ingredient.

Abstract
Carotenoids are a series of natural pigments with unique structure and physiological functions. In this study, a novel Rhodococcus aetherivorans strain N1 was discovered, which can produce 6.4 mg/g carotenoids including β-carotene, zeaxanthin and isorenieratene from glucose. Moreover, strain N1 can directly produce 3.0 mg/g carotenoids from the undetoxified straw hydrolysate, representing the highest carotenoids production from the undetoxified lignocellulosic hydrolysate. The crude carotenoid extracts of strain N1 showed efficient free radical scavenging activity and stability. Strain N1 has complete methylerythritol 4-phosphate (MEP) pathway and related genes for carotenoid synthesis, especially the rare aromatic carotenoid of isorenieratene. Genomic comparison between strain N1 and other carotenoid producing Rhodococcus sp. strains showed the conservatism and universality of carotenoids synthesis gene. These results proved that R. aetherivorans strain N1 can serve as a promising producer for the industrialization of carotenoid production.

Abstract
Carotenoids have been related to a number of health benefits. Their dietary intake and circulating levels have been associated with a reduced incidence of obesity, diabetes, certain types of cancer, and even lower total mortality. Their potential interaction with the gut microbiota (GM) has been generally overlooked but may be of relevance, as carotenoids largely bypass absorption in the small intestine and are passed on to the colon, where they appear to be in part degraded into unknown metabolites. These may include apo-carotenoids that may have biological effects because of higher aqueous solubility and higher electrophilicity that could better target transcription factors, i.e., NF-κB, PPARγ, and RAR/RXRs. If absorbed in the colon, they could have both local and systemic effects. Certain microbes that may be supplemented were also reported to produce carotenoids in the colon. Although some bactericidal aspects of carotenoids have been shown in vitro, a few studies have also demonstrated a prebiotic-like effect, resulting in bacterial shifts with health-associated properties. Also, stimulation of IgA could play a role in this respect. Carotenoids may further contribute to mucosal and gut barrier health, such as stabilizing tight junctions. This review highlights potential gut-related health-beneficial effects of carotenoids and emphasizes the current research gaps regarding carotenoid-GM interactions.

Abstract
Synthetic dyes and colourants have been the mainstay of the pigment industry for decades. Researchers are eager to find a more environment friendly and non-toxic substitute because these synthetic dyes have a negative impact on the environment and people’s health. Microbial pigments might be an alternative to synthetic pigments. Microbial pigments are categorized as secondary metabolites and are mainly produced due to impaired metabolism under stressful conditions. These pigments have vibrant shades and possess nutritional and therapeutic properties compared to synthetic pigment. Microbial pigments are now widely used within the pharmaceuticals, food, paints, and textile industries. The pharmaceutical industries currently use bacterial pigments as a medicine alternative for cancer and many other bacterial infections. Their growing popularity is a result of their low cost, biodegradable, non-carcinogenic, and environmentally beneficial attributes. This audit article has made an effort to take an in-depth look into the existing uses of bacterial pigments in the food and pharmaceutical industries and project their potential future applications.

Abstract
Advances in the computational annotation of genomes and the predictive potential of current metabolic models, based on more than thousands of experimental phenotypes, allow them to be applied to identify the diversity of metabolic pathways at the level of ecophysiology differentiation within taxa and to predict phenotypes, secondary metabolites, host-associated interactions, survivability, and biochemical productivity under proposed environmental conditions. The significantly distinctive phenotypes of members of the marine bacterial species Pseudoalteromonas distincta and an inability to use common molecular markers make their identification within the genus Pseudoalteromonas and prediction of their biotechnology potential impossible without genome-scale analysis and metabolic reconstruction. A new strain, KMM 6257, of a carotenoid-like phenotype, isolated from a deep-habituating starfish, emended the description of P. distincta, particularly in the temperature growth range from 4 to 37 °C. The taxonomic status of all available closely related species was elucidated by phylogenomics. P. distincta possesses putative methylerythritol phosphate pathway II and 4,4'-diapolycopenedioate biosynthesis, related to C30 carotenoids, and their functional analogues, aryl polyene biosynthetic gene clusters (BGC). However, the yellow-orange pigmentation phenotypes in some strains coincide with the presence of a hybrid BGC encoding for aryl polyene esterified with resorcinol. The alginate degradation and glycosylated immunosuppressant production, similar to brasilicardin, streptorubin, and nucleocidines, are the common predicted features. Starch, agar, carrageenan, xylose, lignin-derived compound degradation, polysaccharide, folate, and cobalamin biosynthesis are all strain-specific.

Abstract
Carotenoids are C40 isoprene-based compounds with significant commercial interests that harbor diverse bioactivities. Prominent examples of carotenoids are beta-carotene, a precursor to vitamin A essential for proper eye health, and lycopene and astaxanthin, powerful antioxidants implicated in preventing cancers and atherosclerosis. Due to their benefits to human health, the market value for carotenoids is rapidly increasing and is projected to reach USD 1.7 billion by 2025. However, their production now relies on chemical synthesis and extraction from plants that pose risks to food management and numerous biological safety issues. Thus, carotenoid production from microbes is considered a promising strategy for achieving a healthy society with more sustainability. Red yeast is a heterogeneous group of basidiomycetous fungi capable of producing carotenoids. It is a critical source of microbial carotenoids from low-cost substrates. Carotenogenic enzymes from red yeasts have also been highly efficient, invaluable biological resources for biotechnological applications. In this minireview, we focus on red yeast as a promising source for microbial carotenoids, strain engineering strategies for improving carotenoid production in red yeasts, and potential applications of carotenogenic enzymes from red yeasts in conventional and nonconventional yeasts.

Abstract
Recent changes in the taxonomy of the Pseudomonadaceae family have led to the delineation of three new genera (Atopomonas, Halopseudomonas and Stutzerimonas). However, the genus Pseudomonas remains the most densely populated and displays a broad genetic diversity. Pseudomonas are able to produce a wide variety of secondary metabolites which drives important ecological functions and have a great impact in sustaining their lifestyles. While soilborne Pseudomonas are constantly examined, we currently lack studies aiming to explore the genetic diversity and metabolic potential of marine Pseudomonas spp. In this study, 23 Pseudomonas strains were co-isolated with Vibrio strains from three marine microalgal cultures and rpoD-based phylogeny allowed their assignment to the Pseudomonas oleovorans group (Pseudomonas chengduensis, Pseudomonas toyotomiensis and one new species). We combined whole genome sequencing on three selected strains with an inventory of marine Pseudomonas genomes to assess their phylogenetic assignations and explore their metabolic potential. Our results revealed that most strains are incorrectly assigned at the species level and half of them do not belong to the genus Pseudomonas but instead to the genera Halopseudomonas or Stutzerimonas. We highlight the presence of 26 new species (Halopseudomonas (n = 5), Stutzerimonas (n = 7) and Pseudomonas (n = 14)) and describe one new species, Pseudomonas chaetocerotis sp. nov. (type strain 536T = LMG 31766T = DSM 111343T). We used genome mining to identify numerous BGCs coding for the production of diverse known metabolites (i.e., osmoprotectants, photoprotectants, quorum sensing molecules, siderophores, cyclic lipopeptides) but also unknown metabolites (e.g., ARE, hybrid ARE-DAR, siderophores, orphan NRPS gene clusters) awaiting chemical characterization. Finally, this study underlines that marine environments host a huge diversity of Pseudomonadaceae that can drive the discovery of new secondary metabolites.

Abstract
Phycoerythrin (PE) is a pink/red-colored pigment found in rhodophytes, cryptophytes, and blue-green algae (cyanobacteria). The interest in PE is emerging from its role in delivering health benefits. Unfortunately, the current cyanobacterial-PE (C-PE) knowledge is still in the infant stage. It is essential to acquire a more comprehensive understanding of C-PE. This study aimed to review the C-PE structure, up and downstream processes of C-PE, application of C-PE, and strategies to enhance its stability and market value. In addition, this study also presented a strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats (SWOT) analysis on C-PE. Cyanobacteria appeared to be the more promising PE producers compared to rhodophytes, cryptophytes, and macroalgae. Green/blue light is preferred to accumulate higher PE content in cyanobacteria. Currently, the prominent C-PE extraction method is repeated freezing-thawing. A combination of precipitation and chromatography approaches is proposed to obtain greater purity of C-PE. C-PE has been widely exploited in various fields, such as nutraceuticals, pharmaceuticals, therapeutics, cosmetics, biotechnology, food, and feed, owing to its bioactivities and fluorescent properties. This review provides insight into the state-of-art nature of C-PE and advances a step further in commercializing this prospective pigment.

Abstract
Consumers have an increasing demand for fruit and vegetables with high nutritional value worldwide. However, most fruit and vegetables are vulnerable to quality loss and spoilage during processing, transportation, and storage. Among the recently introduced emerging technologies, supercritical carbon dioxide (SCCO2) has been extensively utilized to treat and maintain fruit and vegetables mainly due to its nontoxicity, safety, and environmentally friendly. SCCO2 technology generates low processing costs and mild processing conditions (temperature and pressure) that allow for the application of CO2 at a supercritical state. This review aimed to summarize the current knowledge on the influence of SCCO2 technology on the quality attributes of fruit and vegetable products, such as physicochemical properties (pH, color, cloud, particle size distribution, texture), sensory quality, and nutritional composition (ascorbic acid, phenolic compounds, anthocyanins, carotenoids, and betalains). In addition, the effects and mechanisms of the SCCO2 technique on endogenous enzyme inactivation (polyphenol oxidase, peroxidase, and pectin methylesterase) were also elucidated. Finally, the prospects of the SCCO2 technique for industrial application was discussed from the economic and regulatory aspect.

Abstract
Gene transfer agents (GTAs) are virus-like elements that are encoded by some bacterial and archaeal genomes. The production of GTAs can be induced by carbon depletion and results in host lysis and the release of virus-like particles that contain mostly random fragments of the host DNA. The remaining members of a GTA-producing population act as GTA recipients by producing proteins needed for GTA-mediated DNA acquisition. Here, we detected a codon usage bias toward codons with more readily available tRNAs in the RcGTA-like GTA genes of alphaproteobacterial genomes. Such bias likely improves the translational efficacy during GTA gene expression. While the strength of codon usage bias fluctuates substantially among individual GTA genes and across taxonomic groups, it is especially pronounced in Sphingomonadales, whose members are known to inhabit nutrient-depleted environments. By screening genomes for gene families with trends in codon usage biases similar to those in GTA genes, we found a gene that likely encodes head completion protein in some GTAs where it appeared missing, and 13 genes previously not implicated in the GTA life cycle. The latter genes are involved in various molecular processes, including the homologous recombination and transport of scarce organic matter. Our findings provide insights into the role of selection for translational efficiency in the evolution of GTA genes and outline genes that are potentially involved in the previously hypothesized integration of GTA-delivered DNA into the host genome. IMPORTANCE Horizontal gene transfer (HGT) is a fundamental process that drives evolution of microorganisms. HGT can result in a rapid dissemination of beneficial genes within and among microbial communities and can be achieved via multiple mechanisms. One peculiar HGT mechanism involves viruses "domesticated" by some bacteria and archaea (their hosts). These so-called gene transfer agents (GTAs) are encoded in hosts' genomes, produced under starvation conditions, and cannot propagate themselves as viruses. We show that GTA genes are under selection to improve the efficiency of their translation when the host activates GTA production. The selection is especially pronounced in bacteria that occupy nutrient-depleted environments. Intriguingly, several genes involved in incorporation of DNA into a genome are under similar selection pressure, suggesting that they may facilitate the integration of GTA-delivered DNA into the host genome. Our findings underscore the potential importance of GTAs as a mechanism of HGT under nutrient-limited conditions, which are widespread in microbial habitats.

Abstract
Purple nonsulfur bacteria (PNSB) were investigated for their carotenoid production and anti-vibrio activity against acute hepatopancreatic necrosis disease (AHPND)-causing Vibrio parahaemolyticus. To test carotenoid production, selected strains were cultivated in basic isolation medium (BIM), glutamate acetate medium, G5 medium and artificial acetic acid wastewater (AAW) medium. From 144 PNSB, Rhodopseudomonas palustris KTSSG46 was selected to produce carotenoids under microaerobic light conditions in BIM. When the culture medium was optimized, strain KTSSG46 grown in BIM modified with l-glutamate at 1 g/L more effectively inhibited AHPND-causing V. parahaemolyticus strains than standard BIM with 1 g/L (NH4 )2 SO4 . BIM was further modified with 1.23 g/L MgSO4 ·7H2 O and carotenoid production increased 40.22%. Carotenoid production at day 2 by strain KTSSG46 grown in BIM modified with l-glutamate at 1 and 1.23 g/L MgSO4 ·7H2 O was the same as production in BIM modified with monosodium glutamate (MSG). Culture supernatants from all BIM formulations showed similar activity against the resistant AHPND strain SR2. Based on high-performance liquid chromatography, carotenoids of strain KTSSG46 might be canthaxanthin. Grown in BIM modified with MSG, strain KTSSG46 could produce inexpensive carotenoids and release anti-vibrio compounds that, applied as shrimp feed additive, would prevent AHPND strains.

Abstract
The characterization and bioactive properties of carotenoid produced by Gordonia rubripertincta GH-1 originating from Pixian Douban (PXDB), the Chinese traditional condiment, was investigated. The produced and purified yellow pigment was characterized by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy (UV-Vis), Fourier transformed infrared (FTIR), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), and high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS), and was identified as carotenoid lutein. Additionally, the bioactive activity of lutein from G. rubripertincta GH-1 was evaluated by measuring the free radical scavenging capacity in vitro and feeding zebrafish lutein through aqueous solution. The results showed that the carotenoid lutein had strong antioxidant capacity and a protective effect on zebrafish eye cells, which could inhibit the apoptosis of eye cells in a concentration dependent manner. The results suggested that carotenoid lutein from G. rubripertincta GH-1 could be utilized as a potential source of natural antioxidants or functional additives for food/pharmaceutical industries.

Abstract
Strains belonging to the Weissella genus are frequently recovered from spontaneously fermented foods. Their functional, microbial-modulating, and probiotic traits enhance not only the sensorial properties but also the nutritional value, beneficial effects, and safety of fermented products. Sporadic cases of opportunistic pathogenicity and antibiotic resistance have deprived safety status from all Weissella species, which thus remain understudied. Our study increased the number of available high-quality and taxonomically accurate W. paramesenteroides genomes by 25% (9 genomes reported, leading to a total of 36 genomes). We conducted a phylogenetic and comparative genomic analysis of the most dominant Weissella species (W. cibaria, W. paramesenteroides, W. viridescens, W. soli, W. koreensis, W. hellenica and W. thailadensis). The phylogenetic tree corroborated species assignment but also revealed phylogenetic diversity within the Weissella species, which is likely related to the adaptation of Weissella in different niches. Using robust alignment criteria, we showed the overall absence of resistance and virulence genes in Weissella spp., except for one W. cibaria isolate carrying blaTEM-181. Enrichment analysis showed the association of Weissella species several CAZymes, which are essential for biotechnological applications. Additionally, the combination of CAZyme metabolites with probiotics can potentially lead to beneficial effects for hosts, such as the inhibition of inflammatory processes and the reduction of cholesterol levels. Bacteriocins and mobile genetic elements MGEs (Inc11 plasmid and ISS1N insertion sequence) were less abundant, however W. thailadensis and W. viridescens showed significant association with specific bacteriocin-encoding genes. Lastly, an analysis of phenotypic traits underlined the need to carefully evaluate W. cibaria strains before use as food additives and suggested the possibility of employing W. paramesenteroides and W. hellenica in the fermentation process of vegetable products. More studies providing high-resolution characterization of Weissella strains from various sources are necessary to elucidate the safety of Weissella spp. and exploit their beneficial characteristics.
