Hospital wastewater treatment methods and its impact on human health and environments

The scientific development and economic advances have led to the identification of many pathogenic agents in hospital effluents. Hospital wastewaters are qualitatively similar to municipal wastewaters, with the difference that these wastewaters contain toxic and infectious substances and compounds that can be dangerous for the health of the environment, employees of these centers, and the entire community. Therefore, in the last few years, it has been emphasized that all hospitals and medical and health centers should have a treatment facility for their produced wastewater so that the health of the society and people is not threatened. An issue that is not paid attention to has become one of the environmental problems and concerns of the world today. The present study focused on the investigate hospital wastewater treatment methods and its impact on human health and the environment. In this narrative study, the first literature search was performed with four hundred and twenty-three articles were retrieved based on PubMed, Elsevier, Web of science, Spring, and Google Scholar databases. The results of this study showed that wastewater from hospitals and medical centers can play a significant impress in polluting soil and aquatic environments and spreading infectious diseases. According to the mentioned contents, collection and treatment of hospital wastewater is essential. In addition, if hospital wastewater enters the wastewater collection network without knowing its characteristics or with incomplete treatment and finally enters the municipal wastewater treatment plant. It causes many problems, including disturbing the balance of the biological system of the treatment plant. Purification and disposal of hospital wastewater is considered a vital action based on environmental standards. The results of this study also showed that the treatment methods of this type of hospital wastewater can play a significant role in reducing the spread of diseases caused by hospital wastewater treatment, including infectious diseases. The results of this study can be very useful for politicians, the managers of the Ministry of Energy and Health and the Environmental Organization in choosing the appropriate methods and process to reduce hospital wastewater and increase the efficiency of hospital wastewater treatment plants.

Challenges and effective tracking down strategies of antibiotic contamination in aquatic ecosystem

A growing environmental concern revolves around the widespread use of medicines, particularly antibiotics, which adversely impact water quality and various life forms. The unregulated production and utilization of antibiotics not only affect non-targeted organisms but also exert significant evolutionary pressures, leading to the rapid development of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in bacterial communities. To address this issue, global studies have been conducted to assess the prevalence and quantities of antibiotics in various environmental components including freshwater, ocean, local sewage, and fish. These studies aim to establish effective analytical methods for identifying and measuring antibiotic residues in environmental matrices that might enable authorities to establish norms for the containment and disposal of antibiotics. This article offers a comprehensive overview of methods used to extract antibiotics from environmental matrices exploring purification techniques such as liquid-liquid extraction, solid-phase extraction, green extraction techniques, and concentration methods like lyophilization and rotary evaporation. It further highlights qualitative and quantitative analysis methods, high-performance liquid chromatography, ultra-high-performance liquid chromatography, and liquid chromatography-tandem along with analytical methods such as UV-Vis and tandem mass spectrometry for detecting and measuring antibiotics. Urgency is underscored for proactive strategies to curb antibiotic contamination, safeguarding the integrity of aquatic ecosystems and public health on a global scale.

Breakthrough in High-Efficiency Photocatalytic Degradation of Acebutolol by Advanced Binary CeO2-MnO2 Oxide System

The sustainable catalytic efficacy of transition metal oxides (TMO) and rare earth element-based oxides positions them as pivotal materials for effectively treating contaminated wastewater. This study successfully synthesized a series of Ce@MnO2 photocatalysts using a straightforward hydrothermal method. These photocatalysts were thoroughly characterized for their optical properties, structural morphology, and phase purity. Among the synthesized materials, the Ce@MnO2 (40:60) exhibited the highest photocatalytic activity for the degradation of Acebutolol (ACB), achieving a remarkable degradation efficiency of 92.71% within 90 min under visible light irradiation. This superior performance is attributed to the increased presence of active species and the efficient separation of photogenerated carriers. Additionally, the photocatalytic reaction mechanism was elucidated, highlighting the catalyst's surface charge properties which significantly enhanced performance in a solution with pH 8. The outstanding photo-response in the visible spectrum renders this method not only cost-effective but also environmentally benign, presenting a promising approach for large-scale water purification.

A molecular assessment of Ostertagia leptospicularis and Spiculopteragia asymmetrica among wild fallow deer in Northern Ireland and implications for false detection of livestock-associated species

BACKGROUND

Wild deer populations utilizing livestock grazing areas risk cross-species transmission of gastrointestinal nematode parasites (GINs), including GINs with anthelmintic resistance (AR) traits. Wild deer have been shown to carry problematic GIN species such as Haemonchus contortus and Trichostrongylus species in the UK, but the presence of livestock GINs in Northern Ireland deer populations is unknown. Also, is it not known whether AR traits exist among GINs of deer such as Ostertagia leptospicularis and Spiculopteragia asymmetrica in pastureland where anthelmintics are heavily used.

METHODS

Adult-stage GIN samples were retrieved from Northern Irish wild fallow deer abomasa. Individual specimens were subject to a species-specific PCR analysis for common sheep and cattle GIN species with ITS-2 sequence analysis to validate species identities. In addition, the beta-tubulin gene was subject to sequencing to identify benzimidazole (BZ) resistance markers.

RESULTS

ITS-2 sequencing revealed O. leptospicularis and S. asymmetrica, but species-specific PCR yielded false-positive hits for H. contortus, Teladorsagia circimcincta, Trichostrongylus axei, T. colubriformis, T. vitrinus and Ostertagia ostertagi. For beta-tubulin, O. leptospicularis and S. asymmetrica yielded species-specific sequences at the E198 codon, but no resistance markers were identified in either species at positions 167, 198 or 200 of the coding region.

DISCUSSION

From this report, no GIN species of significance in livestock were identified among Northern Ireland fallow deer. However, false-positive PCR hits for sheep and cattle-associated GINs is concerning as the presence of deer species in livestock areas could impact both deer and livestock diagnostics and lead to overestimation of both GIN burden in deer and the role as of deer as drivers of these pathogens. ITS-2 sequences from both O. leptospicularis and S. asymmetrica show minor sequence variations to geographically distinct isolates. AR has been noted among GINs of deer but molecular analyses are lacking for GINs of wildlife. In producing the first beta-tubulin sequences for both O. leptospicularis and S. asymmetrica, we report no BZ resistance in this cohort.

CONCLUSIONS

This work contributes to genetic resources for wildlife species and considers the implications of such species when performing livestock GIN diagnostics.

Photodegradation of anthelmintic drugs under natural sunlight and simulated irradiation: kinetics, mechanisms, transformation products, and toxicity

Albendazole (ALB) and bithionol (BIT) are two anthelmintic drugs (ADs) with high consumption from benzimidazole group and diphenylsulfide group, respectively. However, information on the transformation of the two anthelmintics under environmental condition is scare. Therefore, in the present study, we investigated the natural attenuation of the two ADs in the aquatic environment, including biodegradation, hydrolysis, and direct and indirect photodegradation. The direct photodegradation occupied a vast portion among other degradation pathways of the two ADs in natural water, with near-surface summer half-lives of 0.272-0.387 h and 0.110-0.520 h for ALB and BIT, respectively. Suspended particles in water were found to facilitate the photodegradation of the two ADs. Study on the indirect photodegradation demonstrated the positive roles of singlet oxygen (1O2) and excited triplet dissolved organic matter (3DOM*) in the photolysis of the two ADs, whereas the hydroxyl radical (•OH) affected little on the overall photodegradation procedures of ALB due to the scavenging effect of HCO3-. Dual effects of DO, DOM, HCO3-, NO3-, and NO2- on the photodegradation of ALB and BIT were perceived. Transformation intermediates (TIs) of the two ADs during photodegradation were analyzed by UHPLC-QTOF-MS. Six TIs of ALB were identified, including a broad-spectrum fungicide carbendazim and another common AD ricobendazole. Two TIs of BIT yielded from dechlorination were also detected. Probable transformation mechanism and predicted aquatic ecotoxicity based on the identified TIs were unveiled.

Dual-emissive Eu(III)-functionalized metal-organic frameworks for visual, rapid, and intelligent sensing of albendazole and albendazole sulfoxide in animal-origin food

Albendazole (ABZ), a benzimidazole-based anthelmintic, is widely used to treat helminth infections. The extensive and improper use of ABZ may cause drug residues in animal-origin food and anthelmintics resistance, which potentially threaten human health. Meanwhile, albendazole sulfoxide (ABZSO), a metabolite of ABZ, also exhibits toxic effects. Therefore, the detection of ABZ and ABZSO in animal-derived food is significantly necessary. Herein, a dual-emission europium fluorescent sensor (EuUHC-30) was rationally designed and constructed. EuUHC-30 exhibits high selectivity and sensitivity towards ABZ and ABZSO with a detection limit of 0.10 and 0.13 μM, respectively. Furthermore, EuUHC-30 was successfully applied for quantification of ABZ and ABZSO in milk and pig kidney, which were verified by HPLC analysis. Moreover, a smartphone-assisted EuUHC-30 fluorescent paper sensor was fabricated for the practical determination of ABZ and ABZSO in real food. Overall, this work provides a visual, rapid, and intelligent method for the detection of ABZ and ABZSO in animal-origin food.

Distribution, fate and removal efficiency of anthelmintic drugs in wastewater treatment plants

The distribution and fate of 19 anthelmintic drugs (ADs) were investigated in two wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) using different wastewater treatment technologies, including anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic (A2/O) biological process and cyclic activated sludge system (CASS) process. All the 19 ADs were found in the two WWTPs, with concentrations ranging from N.D. to 324.6 ng/L in the influent and from N.D. to 1579.2 ng/L in the effluent. Benzimidazoles were the primary pollutants in the wastewater and suspended particulate matter, accounting for more than half of the total concentration. The concentrations of macrocyclic lactones in the sludge were significantly higher than that of other two media. The ADs removal efficiency of A2/O ranged from -330 % (albendazole sulfoxide) to 100 % (fenbendazole, mebendazole and pyrantel). While the ADs removal efficiency of CASS process ranged from -425 % (albendazole sulfoxide) to 100 % (abamectin, moxidectin and ivermectin). There was no significant difference in the average removal efficiency of the ADs between the two processes (64 % and 63 %, except albendazole sulfoxide). The removal efficiencies of the ADs in the biodegradation stage were better than them in the sedimentation stage. The load per capita of the 19 ADs in two WWTPs ranged from 0 (moxidectin) to 36 μg.d-1.p-1 (albendazole), and the emission in the effluent ranged from 0 (moxidectin) to 163 μg.d-1.p-1 (albendazole sulfoxide). This study provided the first comprehensive data on the occurrence and fate of the 19 ADs and evaluated the removal efficiencies of the 19 ADs in two WWTPs using A2O process and CASS process in the city.

Pharmaceuticals, hazard and ecotoxicity in surface and wastewater in a tropical dairy production area in Latin America

Pharmaceuticals comprise a complex group of emerging pollutants. Despite the significant number of pharmaceuticals used in veterinary medicine, the input of these compounds into the environment due to livestock activities has been scarcely described. This work assays for the first time in Central America the occurrence of pharmaceuticals in farm wastewater in an area devoted to dairy production, and in the surrounding surface waters. Among 69 monitored pharmaceuticals, a total of eight compounds were detected in wastewater samples collected from seven dairy farms after three sampling campaigns. Six pharmaceuticals were considered either of high (albendazole, lovastatin and caffeine) or intermediate estimated hazard (ciprofloxacin, acetaminophen and ketoprofen) based on the HQ approach, while 26% of the samples were considered of high estimated hazard according to the cumulative ∑HQ approach. Similarly, when ecotoxicological tests were applied, all the samples showed some level of toxicity towards Daphnia magna, and most samples towards Vibrio fischeri and Lactuca sativa. Fourteen pharmaceuticals were detected in surface water samples collected in the surroundings of the dairy production farms, including rural and urban areas. Seven out of these compounds showed high estimated risk (risperidone, diphenhydramine, trimethoprim, fluoxetine, ofloxacin, caffeine and ibuprofen), while three (gemfibrozil, ciprofloxacin and cephalexin) exhibited intermediate estimated risk. In a similar worrisome way, 27% of these samples were estimated to pose high environmental risk according to the pharmaceutical content. Despite being nontoxic for D. magna or V. fischeri, frequent inhibition (>20%) of GI in L. sativa was determined in 34% of surface water samples; such findings raise concern on the apparent inceptive environmental pollution and risk within the area. According to the pharmaceutical content patterns in both kinds of studied matrices, no clear evidence of significant contamination in surface water due to livestock activities could be retrieved, suggesting a main role of urban influence.

Anthelmintics in the environment: Their occurrence, fate, and toxicity to non-target organisms

Anthelmintics are drugs used for the treatment and prevention of diseases caused by parasitic worms (helminths). While the importance of anthelmintics in human as well as in veterinary medicine is evident, they represent emerging contaminants of the environment. Human anthelmintics are mainly used in tropical and sub-tropical regions, while veterinary anthelmintics have become frequently-occurring environmental pollutants worldwide due to intensive agri- and aquaculture production. In the environment, anthelmintics are distributed in water and soil in relation to their structure and physicochemical properties. Consequently, they enter various organisms directly (e.g. plants, soil invertebrates, water animals) or indirectly through food-chain. Several anthelmintics elicit toxic effects in non-target species. Although new information has been made available, anthelmintics in ecosystems should be more thoroughly investigated to obtain complex knowledge on their impact in various environments. This review summarizes available information about the occurrence, behavior, and toxic effect of anthelmintics in environment. Several reasons why anthelmintics are dangerous contaminants are highlighted along with options to reduce contamination. Negative effects are also outlined.

Occurrence, distribution and environmental risk of 19 anthelmintic drugs in river water and sediment from the Jinjiang River, China

This study explored the occurrence and distribution of 19 anthelmintic drugs (ADs) including the benzimidazole group, salicylanilide group, imidazothiazole group, tetrahydropyrimidine group, diphenylsulfide group, macrocyclic lactone group and hexahydropyrazine group in river water and sediment of the Jinjiang River in Sichuan, China, during summer and winter seasons. All targets were detected in river water (up to 74.64 ng L-1) and sediment (up to 1701 ng g-1) samples. The predominant ADs were benzimidazoles regardless of seasons and matrices, accounting for 43-82% of the total anthelmintic abundance. Obvious seasonal variation of AD concentrations in the two matrices was observed, which could be attributed to the seasonality of human and veterinary uses of ADs. Evident spatial variation (urban and rural areas) of ADs in winter was indicative of the influence of anthropogenic activities on the environmental concentration of ADs. Though benzimidazoles accumulated in the water and sediment with the highest concentration among all the ADs, macrocyclic lactones were of the highest risk to non-target organisms through ecological risk assessment, with an RQEcotox value up to 2713. This work contributes to comprehensively assessing the contamination level, ecological level and transmission characteristics of ADs in the environment.

Global trends in the research and development of medical/pharmaceutical wastewater treatment over the half-century

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely impacted public health and the worldwide economy. The overstretched operation of health systems around the world is accompanied by potential and ongoing environmental threats. At present, comprehensive scientific assessments of research on temporal changes in medical/pharmaceutical wastewater (MPWW), as well as estimations of researcher networks and scientific productivity are lacking. Therefore, we conducted a thorough literature study, using bibliometrics to reproduce research on medical wastewater over nearly half a century. Our primary goal is systematically to map the evolution of keyword clusters over time, and to obtain the structure and credibility of clusters. Our secondary objective was to measure research network performance (country, institution, and author) using CiteSpace and VOSviewer. We extracted 2306 papers published between 1981 and 2022. The co-cited reference network identified 16 clusters with well-structured networks (Q = 0.7716, S = 0.896). The main trends were as follows: 1) Early MPWW research prioritized sources of wastewater, and this cluster was considered to be the mainstream research frontier and direction, representing an important source and priority research area. 2) Mid-term research focused on characteristic contaminants and detection technologies. Particularly during 2000-2010, a period of rapid developments in global medical systems, pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) in MPWW were recognized as a major threat to human health and the environment. 3) Recent research has focused on novel degradation technologies for PhC-containing MPWW, with high scores for research on biological methods. Wastewater-based epidemiology has emerged as being consistent with or predictive of the number of confirmed COVID-19 cases. Therefore, the application of MPWW in COVID-19 tracing will be of great interest to environmentalists. These results could guide the future direction of funding agencies and research groups.

Veterinary drug albendazole inhibits root colonization and symbiotic function of the arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus Rhizophagus irregularis

Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are plant symbionts that have a pivotal role in maintaining soil fertility and nutrient cycling. However, these microsymbionts may be exposed to organic pollutants like pesticides or veterinary drugs known to occur in agricultural soils. Anthelminthics are veterinary drugs that reach soils through the application of contaminated manures in agricultural settings. Their presence might threaten the function of AMF, considered as sensitive indicators of the toxicity of agrochemicals to the soil microbiota. We determined the impact of the anthelminthic compounds albendazole and ivermectin on the establishment and functionality of the symbiosis between the model-legume Lotus japonicus and the AMF Rhizophagus irregularis. Our analyses revealed negative effects of albendazole on the development and functionality of arbuscules, the symbiotic organelle of AMF, at a concentration of 0.75 μg g-1. The impairment of the symbiotic function was verified by the reduced expression of genes SbtM1, PT4 and AMT2;2 involved in arbuscules formation, P and N uptake, and the lower phosphorus shoot content detected in the albendazole-treated plants. Our results provide first evidence for the toxicity of albendazole on the colonization capacity and function of R. irregularis at concentrations that may occur in agricultural soils systematically amended with drug-containing manures.

Occurrence, ecology risk assessment and exposure evaluation of 19 anthelmintics in dust and soil from China

In order to fill the blank of domestic research on anthelmintics in dust and soil, 159 paired dust (including indoor and outdoor dust) and soil samples were collected nationwide. All 19 kinds of the anthelmintics were detected in the samples. The total concentration of the target substances in the outdoor dust, indoor dust and soil samples ranged from 1.83 to 1.30 × 10³ ng/g, from 2.99 to 6.00 × 10³ ng/g and from 0.23 to 8.03 × 10² ng/g, respectively. The total concentration of the 19 anthelmintics in northern China were significantly higher than those in southern China in the outdoor dust and soil samples. No significant correlation was found in the total concentration of anthelmintics between the indoor and outdoor dust because of strong human activities interference, however, a significant correlation existed between the outdoor dust and soil samples and between the indoor dust and soil samples. High ecological risk was found at 35% and 28% of all the sampling sites to non-target organisms in the soil respectively for IVE and ABA, and merits further study. The daily anthelmintics intakes were evaluated via ingestion and dermal contact of soil and dust samples for both children and adults. Ingestion was the predominant way for anthelmintics exposure, and the anthelmintics in soil and dust did not pose a health threat to human health at present.

Advanced oxidation and a metrological strategy based on CLC-MS for the removal of pharmaceuticals from pore & surface water

In this work, it is studied the photolysis, electrolysis, and photo-electrolysis of a mixture of pharmaceutics (sulfadiazine, naproxen, diclofenac, ketoprofen and ibuprofen) contained in two very different types of real water matrices (obtained from surface and porewater reservoirs), trying to clarify the role of the matrix on the degradation of the pollutants. To do this, a new metrological approach was also developed for screening of pharmaceuticals in waters by capillary liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (CLC-MS). This allows the detection at concentrations lower than 10 ng mL^-1. Results obtained in the degradation tests demonstrate that inorganic composition of the water matrix directly influences on the efficiency of the drugs removal by the different EAOPs and better degradation results were obtained for experiments carried out with surface water. The most recalcitrant drug studied was ibuprofen for all processes evaluated, while diclofenac and ketoprofen were found to be the easiest drugs for being degraded. Photo-electrolysis was found to be more efficient than photolysis and electrolysis, and the increase in the current density was found to attain a slight improvement in the removal although with an associated huge increase in the energy consumption. The main reaction pathways for each drug and technology were also proposed.

Multi-target analysis of cytostatics in hospital effluents over a 9-month period

The consumption of cytostatics, pharmaceuticals prescribed in chemotherapy, is increasing every year and worldwide, along with the incidence of cancer. The presence and the temporal evolution of cytostatics in wastewaters from a Portuguese hospital center was evaluated through a 9-month sampling campaign, comprising a total of one hundred and twenty-nine samples, collected from May 2019 to February 2020. Eleven cytostatics out of thirteen pharmaceuticals were studied, including flutamide, mycophenolate mofetil and mycophenolic acid, which have never been monitored before. Target analytes were extracted and quantified by solid-phase extraction coupled to liquid-chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry analysis; the method was fully validated. All pharmaceuticals were detected in at least one sample, bicalutamide being the one found with higher frequency (detected in all samples), followed by mycophenolic acid, which was also the compound detected at higher concentrations (up to 5340 ± 211 ng/L). Etoposide, classified as carcinogenic to humans, was detected in 60% of the samples at concentrations up to 142 ± 15 ng/L. The risk from exposure to cytostatics was estimated for aquatic organisms living in receiving bodies. Cyclophosphamide, doxorubicin, etoposide, flutamide, megestrol and mycophenolic acid are suspected to induce risk. Long-term and synergic effects should not be neglected, even for the cytostatics for which no risk was estimated.

Using HRMS fingerprinting to explore micropollutant contamination in soil and vegetables caused by swine wastewater irrigation

Livestock wastewater has been reused for agricultural irrigation to save water and fertilise the soil. However, micropollutants excreted by livestock animals may contaminate the soil and crops through livestock wastewater irrigation. This study employed high-resolution mass spectrometry (HRMS) to facilitate broad-scope suspect screening of soil and vegetables and identify changes in micropollutant fingerprints caused by swine wastewater irrigation. Field trials were performed to simulate the practical cultivation of small leafy vegetables. Soil and pak choi were irrigated with groundwater, a reasonable amount of swine wastewater, and excessive swine wastewater (three times the reasonable amount) and were sampled at three time points. The samples were extracted using organic solvents and analysed with a liquid chromatography-quadrupole-time-of-flight HRMS system. The molecular features were compared to over 3000 micropollutants in commercial libraries. The relative concentrations of suspect micropollutants among the irrigation groups were compared using multivariate and univariate analyses. The marker micropollutants that increased with swine wastewater irrigation were rigorously identified based on the MS/MS spectra. Fifty-three micropollutants were frequently found in the soil (n = 54) and 36 in the pak choi (n = 53). Partial least squares discriminant analysis (PLS-DA) models revealed significant differences in the micropollutant fingerprints in the soil among the three irrigation groups, but not in the pak choi. Eight micropollutants with variable importance in projection scores above 1.0 in the PLS-DA model and significantly higher relative concentrations (p < 0.05) in the soil irrigated with swine wastewater were confirmed as markers. Besides veterinary drugs and their metabolites, cinnamic acid and phenylalanine were the markers relevant to swine feed that were not previously reported. Nevertheless, accumulations of micropollutants in the soil or contamination of the pak choi due to swine wastewater irrigation were not found under the trial conditions.

Levels and ecological risk of pharmaceuticals in River Sosiani, Kenya

The continued frequent detection of pharmaceuticals in the environment is of major concern due to potential human and ecological risks. This study evaluated 30 antibiotics from 8 classes: sulphonamides (SAs), penicillins (PNs), fluoroquinolones (FQs), macrolides (MLs), lincosamides (LINs), nitroimidazoles (NIs), diaminopyrimidines (DAPs), salfones and 4 anthelmintics benzimidazoles (BZs) in surface water and sediments from River Sosiani in Eldoret, Kenya. Samples were collected during the wet and dry seasons and subjected to solid phase extraction using HLB cartridges. A liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) method was used for the simultaneous quantification of the compounds. Chromatographic separation was on a reversed-phase Zorkax Eclipse Plus C18 column eluted in a gradient program and compounds detected by mass spectrometer operated in a positive electrospray ionization (+ ESI) mode. Twenty-eight antibiotics were detected in water where 22 had a 100% detection frequency and the remaining 4 showed detection frequencies ranging from 5 to 47%. Three BZs had a 100% detection frequency. Detectable concentrations of the pharmaceuticals in water ranged between 0.1 and 247 ng L^-1 and 0.01 and 974 µg kg^-1 in the sediments. The sulfonamide, sulfamethoxazole, had the highest concentration in water (247 ng L^-1), whereas penicillin G showed the highest concentrations in sediments (414-974 µg kg^-1). Quantified pharmaceuticals decreased in the order SAs > DAPs > FQs > ATs > PNs ≈ MCs ≈ LNs > NIs in water, and followed the order PNs > BZs > FQs > MLs > DAPs ≈ LNs > NIs > SAs in sediments. Risk quotients (RQ_w) showed that sulfamethoxazole and ciprofloxacin were of high ecological risk in the surface water (RQ_w values of 1.11 and 3.24, respectively), whereas penicillin V, ampicillin, penicillin G, norfloxacin, enrofloxacin, erythromycin, tylosin, and lincomycin were of medium ecological risk in the aquatic system. The findings show high prevalence of pharmaceuticals in surface water and sediments and are therefore potential ecological hazards. Such information is vital when devising mitigation strategies.

Pharmaceutical residues: One of the significant problems in achieving 'clean water for all' and its solution

With the rapid emergence of various metabolic and multiple-drug-resistant infectious diseases, new pharmaceuticals are continuously being introduced in the market. The excess production and use of pharmaceuticals and their untreated/unmetabolized release in the environment cause the contamination of aquatic ecosystem, and thus, compromise the environment and human-health. The present review provides insights into the classification, sources, occurrence, harmful impacts, and existing technologies to curb these problems. A comprehensive detail of various biological and nanotechnological strategies for the removal of pharmaceutical residues from water is critically discussed focusing on their efficiencies, and current limitations to design improved-technologies for their lab-to-field applications. Furthermore, the review highlights and suggests the scope of integrated bionanotechnological methods for enhanced removal of pharmaceutical residues from water to fulfill the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (UN-SDG) for providing clean potable water for all.

Non-antibiotics matter: Evidence from a one-year investigation of livestock wastewater from six farms in East China

Livestock wastewater is an important source of pharmaceuticals in aquatic environments; however, most related studies only focused on antibiotics. This study investigated 18 pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs), including 12 antibiotics and 6 non-antibiotics, in livestock wastewater during a one-year survey of six livestock farms in East China. The results showed that four non-antibiotic PhACs-caffeine, N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, gemfibrozil, and diclofenac-exhibited high detection frequencies (80% to 97%), high concentrations (median 0.43 to 3.79 μg/L), poor removal efficiencies (3% to 53%), and high environmental risks. A ranking system was developed to prioritize PhACs based on their occurrence, removal, and environmental risks in livestock wastewater; diclofenac, N,N-diethyl-m-toluamide, sulfamethazine, sulfadiazine, and gemfibrozil, were identified as the top five priority PhACs that should be considered first. Finally, a preliminary source apportionment protocol using four priority PhACs was proposed to trace the emission originating from treated and untreated livestock wastewater and to indicate the major contributor (cattle or swine farms) in the region. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first long-term investigation on the pollution characteristics of non-antibiotics in livestock wastewater in China, and our findings highlight the importance of considering non-antibiotics and the prioritized PhACs for the pollution control of PhACs in livestock wastewater.

Critical review of technologies for the on-site treatment of hospital wastewater: From conventional to combined advanced processes

This review aims to assess different technologies for the on-site treatment of hospital wastewater (HWW) to remove pharmaceutical compounds (PhCs) as sustances of emerging concern at a bench, pilot, and full scales from 2014 to 2020. Moreover, a rough characterisation of hospital effluents is presented. The main detected PhCs are antibiotics and psychiatric drugs, with concentrations up to 1.1 mg/L. On the one hand, regarding the presented technologies, membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are a good alternative for treating HWW with PhCs removal values higher than 80% in removing analgesics, anti-inflammatories, cardiovascular drugs, and some antibiotics. Moreover, this system has been scaled up to the pilot plant scale. However, some target compounds are still present in the treated effluent, such as psychiatric and contrast media drugs and recalcitrant antibiotics (erythromycin and sulfamethoxazole). On the other hand, ozonation effectively removes antibiotics found in the HWW (>93%), and some studies are carried out at the pilot plant scale. Even though, some families, such as the X-ray contrast media, are recalcitrant to ozone. Other advanced oxidation processes (AOPs), such as Fenton-like or UV treatments, seem very effective for removing pharmaceuticals, Antibiotic Resistance Bacteria (ARBs) and Antibiotic Resistance Genes (ARGs). However, they are not implanted at pilot plant or full scale as they usually consider extra reactants such as ozone, iron, or UV-light, making the scale-up of the processes a challenging task to treat high-loading wastewater. Thus, several examples of biological wastewater treatment methods combined with AOPs have been proposed as the better strategy to treat HWW with high removal of PhCs (generally over 98%) and ARGs/ARBs (below the detection limit) and lower spending on reactants. However, it still requires further development and optimisation of the integrated processes.

Behavior of Mebendazole during NF/RO Adsorption and Photolysis

The idea of using drugs from the benzimidazole group as potential antitumor agents is becoming increasingly popular and widespread in research. However, their use as antiparasitics and in cancer treatment will increase their already recorded occurrence in the aquatic environment. In this study, the removal of the anthelmintic mebendazole from aqueous solution was investigated using nanofiltration and reverse osmosis membranes, adsorption on granular activated carbon (GAC), and photolytic degradation. The dense NF90 and reverse osmosis XLE membranes showed almost complete removal (>97.7%), while the NF270 membrane showed a large dependence of removal on initial concentration from 41.9% to 96.6%. Adsorption in the column resulted in complete removal of mebendazole at the highest GAC height used (40 cm) from the solution with the lowest concentration (1 mg/L). Photolytic degradation by artificial light for 2 and 12 h resulted in photodegradation of mebendazole in the range of 23.5−61.4%, forming a new degradation or transformation compound with an m/z ratio of 311. Mebendazole is a photosensitive drug whose photodegradation follows first-order kinetics and depends on the drug concentration. Toxicity was studied with Vibrio fischeri before and after photolysis, and showed a decrease in inhibition after 12 h.

Prioritizing Pharmaceutical Contaminants in Great Lakes Tributaries Using Risk-Based Screening Techniques

In a study of 44 diverse sampling sites across 16 Great Lakes tributaries, 110 pharmaceuticals were detected of 257 monitored. The present study evaluated the ecological relevance of detected chemicals and identified heavily impacted areas to help inform resource managers and guide future investigations. Ten pharmaceuticals (caffeine, nicotine, albuterol, sulfamethoxazole, venlafaxine, acetaminophen, carbamazepine, gemfibrozil, metoprolol, and thiabendazole) were distinguished as having the greatest potential for biological effects based on comparison to screening-level benchmarks derived using information from two biological effects databases, the ECOTOX Knowledgebase and the ToxCast database. Available evidence did not suggest substantial concern for 75% of the monitored pharmaceuticals, including 147 undetected pharmaceuticals and 49 pharmaceuticals with screening-level alternative benchmarks. However, because of a lack of biological effects information, screening values were not available for 51 detected pharmaceuticals. Samples containing the greatest pharmaceutical concentrations and having the highest detection frequencies were from Lake Erie, southern Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron tributaries. Samples collected during low-flow periods had higher pharmaceutical concentrations than those collected during increased-flow periods. The wastewater-treatment plant effluent content in streams correlated positively with pharmaceutical concentrations. However, deviation from this correlation demonstrated that secondary factors, such as multiple pharmaceutical sources, were likely present at some sites. Biodegradation of anthelmintics in soils: does prior exposure of soils to anthelmintics accelerate their dissipation?

Anthelmintics (AHs) control animal infections with gastrointestinal nematodes. They reach soil through animal faeces deposited on soils or through manuring. Although soil constitutes a major AH sink, we know little about the mechanisms controlling their soil dissipation. We employed studies with fumigated and non-fumigated soils collected from 12 sheep farms with a variable record of albendazole (ABZ), ivermectin (IVM) and eprinomectin (EPM) use. From each farm, we collected soils from inside small ruminant barn facilities (series A, high exposure) and the associated grazing pastures (series B, low exposure). We asked the following questions: (a) What is the role of soil microorganisms in AH dissipation? (b) Does repeated exposure of soils to AHs lead to their accelerated biodegradation? (c) Which soil physicochemical properties control AH dissipation? Soil fumigation significantly retarded ABZ (DT₅₀ 1.9 and 4.33 days), IVM (34.5 and 108.7 days) and EPM dissipation (30 and 121 days) suggesting a key role of soil microorganisms in AH dissipation. No significant acceleration in AH dissipation was evident in soils from units with a record of the administration of AHs or in soil series A vs series B, suggesting that the level of prior exposure was not adequate to induce their enhanced biodegradation. Significant positive and negative correlations of soil total organic carbon (TOC) and ABZ and IVM dissipation, respectively, were observed. Soil adsorption of AHs increased in the order IVM > ABZ > EPM. TOC controlled soil adsorption of IVM and EPM, but not of ABZ, in support of the contrasting effect of TOC on IVM and ABZ dissipation.

Distribution and ecological risks of pharmaceuticals and personal care products with different anthropogenic stresses in a coastal watershed of China

The occurrences of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) in both freshwater and sea have been widely reported. However, pollution control requires further information on riverine discharges with influence of land-based activities and associated risks to estuarine ecosystems. This study investigated the spatial occurrences and the relationship to sociodemographic parameters of 30 PPCPs in 67 rivers along the Bohai coastal region. The results showed that PPCPs were mainly deposited in aquatic phase, and the partitioning coefficient between water and sediment was highly determined by chemical properties. The levels of 30 PPCPs in rivers ranged from 8.33 to 894.48 ng/L, showing a large variance among regions. Caffeine, sulfamethoxazole, sulfamethazine, ofloxacin, anhydro-erythromycin, and trimethoprim were found to be the major pollutants. Multivariable analysis method was used to assess the correlation of PPCPs markers to socio-economic parameters. The results indicated that domestic emissions contributed most to the occurrences of PPCPs in the riverine water. Risk assessment result indicated that sulfamethoxazole, caffeine, tetracycline, and carbamazepine ranked top four with the highest risks to the most sensitive aquatic organisms. The results identified caffeine and carbamazepine with high detection frequency and concentration as the priority chemicals, while sulfamethoxazole and erythromycin should also be concerned due to their potential threats in specific rivers. This study provides valuable information for pollution control over PPCPs riverine discharges in estuarine regions.

Light-Activated Hydroxyapatite Photocatalysts: New Environmentally-Friendly Materials to Mitigate Pollutants

This review focuses on a reasoned search for articles to treat contaminated water using hydroxyapatite (HAp)-based compounds. In addition, the fundamentals of heterogeneous photocatalysis were considered, combined with parameters that affect the pollutants’ degradation using hydroxyapatite-based photocatalyst design and strategies of this photocatalyst, and the challenges of and perspectives on the development of these materials. Many critical applications have been analyzed to degrade dyes, drugs, and pesticides using HAp-based photocatalysts. This systematic review highlights the recent state-of-the-art advances that enable new paths and good-quality preparations of HAp-derived photocatalysts for photocatalysis.

An assessment of hospital wastewater and biomedical waste generation, existing legislations, risk assessment, treatment processes, and scenario during COVID-19

Hospitals release significant quantities of wastewater (HWW) and biomedical waste (BMW), which hosts a wide range of contaminants that can adversely affect the environment if left untreated. The COVID-19 outbreak has further increased hospital waste generation over the past two years. In this context, a thorough literature study was carried out to reveal the negative implications of untreated hospital waste and delineate the proper ways to handle them. Conventional treatment methods can remove only 50%-70% of the emerging contaminants (ECs) present in the HWW. Still, many countries have not implemented suitable treatment methods to treat the HWW in-situ. This review presents an overview of worldwide HWW generation, regulations, and guidelines on HWW management and highlights the various treatment techniques for efficiently removing ECs from HWW. When combined with advanced oxidation processes, biological or physical treatment processes could remove around 90% of ECs. Analgesics were found to be more easily removed than antibiotics, β-blockers, and X-ray contrast media. The different environmental implications of BMW have also been highlighted. Mishandling of BMW can spread infections, deadly diseases, and hazardous waste into the environment. Hence, the different steps associated with collection to final disposal of BMW have been delineated to minimize the associated health risks. The paper circumscribes the multiple aspects of efficient hospital waste management and may be instrumental during the COVID-19 pandemic when the waste generation from all hospitals worldwide has increased significantly.

Sedimentary spectrum and potential ecological risks of residual pharmaceuticals in relation to sediment-water partitioning and land uses in a watershed

Pharmaceutical residues in river surficial sediment are prone to anthropogenic impacts and environmental factors in watershed, but the mechanisms remain unclear. This study attempted to reveal surficial sediment-water pseudo-partitioning and anthropogenic (land use) patterns of pharmaceutical residues in surficial sediment among 23 subwatersheds of Jiulong River, southeast China with a gradient of urban land use percentile in dry and wet seasons. Thirty-eight out of target 86 compounds from six-category pharmaceuticals were quantified and ranged from below the quantification limits (0.001 mg kg^-1 dry mass) up to 8.19 mg kg^-1 dry mass (chlortetracycline) using a developed SPE-HPLC-MS/MS protocol. Antibiotics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) collectively dominated sedimentary pharmaceutical residues for 34.5-99.8% of the total quantified compounds (median at 92%). Land uses in subwatersheds showed high consistency with sedimentary pharmaceutical residues in the dry season rather than the wet season, especially for human use only and veterinary use only compounds. Surficial sediment-water partitioning of pharmaceutical compounds influenced their sedimentary residues regardless of season, which were determined by properties of compound and surficial sediment interactively. All tetracycline compounds, trimethoprim (sulfonamides synergist), caffeine (central nervous system drug), and oxfendazole (antiparasitic drug) were quantified to pose high potential ecological risks to aquatics. Findings of this study suggest that pseudo-persistent legacy of human and veterinary pharmaceuticals requires a wider coverage of pharmaceutical compounds for a comprehensive ecological assessment in the environment and more involvement of anthropogenic impacts and socioeconomic factors in the future studies.

Analysis of pharmaceuticals, hormones and bacterial communities in a municipal wastewater treatment plant - Comparison of parallel full-scale membrane bioreactor and activated sludge systems

In this study, the occurrence of pharmaceuticals, hormones and bacterial community structures was studied at a wastewater treatment plant in Finland having two different parallel treatment lines: conventional activated sludge (CAS) treatment with a sedimentation stage, and a membrane bioreactor (MBR). Influent and effluents were sampled seven times over a period of one year. The bacterial communities of the influent samples showed a high degree of similarity, except for the February sample which had substantially lower diversity. There was significant fluctuation in the species richness and diversity of the effluent samples, although both effluents showed a similar trend. A marked decrease in diversity was observed in effluents collected between August and November. The initiation of nitrogen removal as a result of an increase in temperature could explain the changes in microbial community structures. In overall terms, suspended solids, bacteria and total organic matter (COD and BOD) were removed to a greater extent using the MBR, while higher Tot-N, Tot-P and nitrate removal rates were achieved using the CAS treatment. Estrone (E1) concentrations were also consistently at a lower level in the MBR effluents (<0.1-0.68 ng/l) compared to the CAS effluents (1.1-12 ng/l). Due to the high variation in the concentrations of pharmaceuticals, no clear superiority of either process could be demonstrated with certainty. The study highlights the importance of long-term sampling campaigns to detect variations effectively.

Occurrence and Effects of Antimicrobials Drugs in Aquatic Ecosystems

Currently, thanks to the development of sensitive analytical techniques, the presence of different emerging pollutants in aquatic ecosystems has been evidenced; however, most of them have not been submitted to any regulation so far. Among emerging contaminants, antimicrobials have received particular attention in recent decades, mainly due to the concerning development of antibiotic resistance observed in bacteria, but little is known about the toxicological and ecological impact that antimicrobials can have on aquatic ecosystems. Their high consumption in human and veterinary medicine, food-producing animals and aquaculture, as well as persistence and poor absorption have caused antimicrobials to be discharged into receiving waters, with or without prior treatment, where they have been detected at ng-mg L−1 levels with the potential to cause effects on the various organisms living within aquatic systems. This review presents the current knowledge on the occurrence of antimicrobials in aquatic ecosystems, emphasizing their occurrence in different environmental matrixes and the effects on aquatic organisms (cyanobacteria, microalgae, invertebrates and vertebrates).

Impacts of COVID-19 on the Aquatic Environment and Implications on Aquatic Food Production

The COVID-19 pandemic, caused by the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), resulted in ecological changes of aquatic ecosystems, affected the aquatic food supply chain, and disrupted the socio-economy of global populations. Due to reduced human activities during the pandemic, the aquatic environment was reported to improve its water quality, wild fishery stocks, and biodiversity. However, the sudden surge of plastics and biomedical wastes during the COVID-19 pandemic masked the positive impacts and increased the risks of aquatic pollution, especially microplastics, pharmaceuticals, and disinfectants. The transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from wastewater treatment plants to natural water bodies could have serious impacts on the environment and human health, especially in developing countries with poor waste treatment facilities. The presence and persistence of SARS-CoV-2 in human excreta, wastewaters, and sludge and its transmission to aquatic ecosystems could have negative impacts on fisheries and aquaculture industries, which have direct implications on food safety and security. COVID-19 pandemic-related environmental pollution showed a high risk to aquatic food security and human health. This paper reviews the impacts of COVID-19, both positive and negative, and assesses the causes and consequences of anthropogenic activities that can be managed through effective regulation and management of eco-resources for the revival of biodiversity, ecosystem health, and sustainable aquatic food production.

Bioaugmentation of animal feces as a mean to mitigate environmental contamination with anthelmintic benzimidazoles

Anthelmintics are used to control infestations of ruminants by gastrointestinal nematodes. The limited metabolism of anthelmintics in animals result in their excretion in feces. These could be piled up in the floor of livestock farms, constituting a point source of environmental contamination, or used as manures in agricultural soils where they persist or move to water bodies. Hence the removal of anthelmintics from feces could mitigate environmental contamination. We hypothesized that a thiabendazole-degrading bacterial consortium would also degrade other benzimidazole anthelmintics like albendazole, fenbendazole, ricobendazole, mebendazole and flubendazole. In liquid culture tests the consortium was more effective in degrading compounds with smaller benzimidazole substituents (thiabendazole, albendazole, ricobendazole), rather than benzimidazoles with bulky substituents (fenbendazole, flubendazole, mebendazole). We then explored the bioaugmentation capacity of the consortium in sheep feces fortified with 5 and 50 mg kg^-1 of thiabendazole, albendazole and fenbendazole. Bioaugmentation enhanced the degradation of all compounds and its efficiency was accelerated upon fumigation of feces, in the absence of the indigenous fecal microbial community. The latter contributes to anthelmintics degradation as suggested by the significantly lower DT₅₀ values in fumigated vs non-fumigated, non-bioaugmented feces. Overall, bioaugmentation could be an efficient means to reduce environmental exposure to recalcitrant anthelmintic benzimidazoles.

Occurrence and risk assessment of anthelmintics in Tuojiang River in Sichuan, China

Recently, emerging pollutants, such as anthelmintics have attracted an increasing attention worldwide due to their extensive use and notable stability. However, the information on anthelmintics in the environment of southwest China is scarce. Thus, the occurrence, ecological risk and exposure evaluation of nineteen anthelmintics in Tuojiang River, which is one of the largest tributaries of Yangtze River, and drinking water source of Sichuan, southwest China, were investigated. The result showed that the detection frequency of anthelmintics was relatively high in Tuojiang River, ranging from 65% to 100% in river water. Among the seven kinds of anthelmintics, benzimidazoles are the primary anthelmintics, with concentrations up to 61.12 ng/L and 596.06 ng/g in water and sediment of the Tuojiang river, respectively. The total concentration of 19 anthelmintics in sediment samples from non-agricultural area was higher than that in agricultural area(p = 0.000 < 0.05). This could be attributed to anthropogenic activities, which lead to greater discharge and accumulation of anthelmintics in residential area along the river. It's worth to mention that the highest total concentrations of anthelmintics (109.28 ng/L) was found at the junction of rivers in R31 site. The results could be ascribed to the complexity of junction of Tuojiang River and Yangtze River, which could influence the distribution of pollutant. Besides, the ecological risk assessment showed that the macrocyclic lactones rather than benzimidazoles had relatively high toxicity to non-target organisms in aquatic environment (p = 0.000 < 0.05), with the highest RQ_Ecotox value of 101 for Daphnia magna, while benzimidazoles had relatively high concentrations. The exposure risk could be ignored for both children and adults because the daily intake of anthelmintics via water ingestion were below 10 ng/kg/d. In addition, strong correlations were found between sucralose and most of the selected anthelmintics in Tuojiang River, indicating that sucralose might be a good tracer to evaluated the source of anthelmintics in surface water. This study provides the levels, risks and even some tracer information of pollutants for better understanding of anthelmintics in southwest China.

Heterogeneous ozonation of ofloxacin using MnOx -CeOx /γ-Al2 O3 as a catalyst: Performances, degradation kinetics and possible degradation pathways

In this study, the performance of ofloxacin (OFX) degradation in synthetic wastewater using synthesized MnO_x -CeO_x /γ-Al₂ O₃ as a heterogeneous ozonation catalyst was evaluated. The removal rates of OFX and chemical oxygen demand (COD) during 15-day continuous-flow experiments were 98.2% and 76.7% on average, respectively. An ozone index (mgCOD/mgO₃ ) of 1.09 with a high ozone utilization efficiency of 91.39% was achieved. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of ofloxacin degradation reached 15.216 × 10^-2  min^-1 , which was five times that (3.085 × 10^-2  min^-1 ) without catalysts. The results of gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) demonstrated that a variety of small-molecule organics occurred in the final oxidation products, such as 4-hydroxyl-4-methyl-2-pentanone and 2-oxoadipic acid in addition to homologs of OFX. The results of this study suggested that hydroxyl radicals played critical roles in the degradation and mineralization of OFX via four main pathways: (a) electrophilic addition of nitrogen; (b) breakdown of carbon-carbon double bonds; (c) hydrolysis of ether rings; and (d) halodecarboxylation of carboxyl groups. The biodegradability (BOD₅ /COD) of OFX after catalytic ozonation reached 0.54. PRACTITIONER POINTS: Ofloxacin wastewater was treated using catalytic ozonation in a 15-day continuous experiment with MnO_x -CeO_x /γ-Al₂ O₃ as a catalyst. The ozone index reached 1.09 mgCOD/mgO₃ during ozonation of ofloxacin. The presence of the catalyst increased the reaction rate constant by a factor of five. 4-hydroxy-4-methyl-2-pentanone was the primary ofloxacin oxidation product.

Synthesis of a Novel Photocatalyst MVO4/g-C3N4 (M = La, Gd) with Better Photocatalytic Activity for Tetracycline Hydrochloride Degradation under Visible-Light Irradiation

In this study, novel photocatalysts MVO4/g-C3N4 (M = La, Gd) were prepared by the hydrothermal method, through which different loading amounts of 10–50%MVO4 and g-C3N4 were mixed and ultrasonically oscillated to gain heterojunction catalysts. All the samples were characterized by XRD, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, XPS, Us-vis, and PL to ensure the successful integration of LaVO4 and GdVO4 with g-C3N4. The obtained results showed that MVO4/g-C3N4 could effectually improve the separation efficiency of photogenerated carriers during the photodegradation process, thus improving the photodegradation efficiency, while among them, 40%GdVO4/g-C3N4 showed the best photocatalytic performance and degradation of tetracycline hydrochloride, reaching up to 91% for 3 h, which was 3.64 times higher than pristine g-C3N4. From the discussed results above, the possible mechanism of the photodegradation process was put forward. This study supplies a promising method to gain g-C3N4-based photocatalysts for antibiotics removal.

An analysis of the spatio-temporal occurrence of anthelmintic veterinary drug residues in groundwater

Anthelmintics are antiparasitic drugs used to control helminthic parasites such as nematodes and trematodes in animals, particularly those exposed through pasture-based production systems. Even though anthelmintics have been shown to be excreted into the environment in relatively high amounts as unmetabolized drug or transformation products (TPs), there is still only limited information available on their environmental occurrence, particularly in groundwater, which has resulted in them being considered as potential emerging contaminants of concern. A comprehensive study was carried out to investigate the occurrence of 40 anthelmintic residues (including 13 TPs) in groundwaters (and associated surface waters) throughout the Republic of Ireland. The study focused on investigating the occurrence of these contaminants in karst and fractured bedrock aquifers, with a total of 106 sites (88 groundwaters and 18 surface waters) samples during spring 2017. Seventeen anthelmintic compounds consisting of eight parent drugs and nine TPs were detected at 22% of sites at concentrations up to 41 ng L^-1. Albendazole and its TPs were most frequently detected residues, found at 8% of groundwater sites and 28% of surface water sites. Multivariate statistical analysis identified several source and pathway factors as being significantly related to the occurrence of anthelmintics in groundwater, however there was an evident localised effect which requires further investigation. An investigation of the temporal variations in occurrence over a 13 month period indicated a higher frequency and concentration of anthelmintics during February/March and again later during August/September 2018, which coincided with periods of increased usage and intensive meteorological events. This work presents the first detections of these contaminants in Irish groundwater and it contributes to broadening our understanding of anthelmintics in the environment. It also provides insight to seasonal trends in occurrence, which is critical for assessing potential future effects and implications of climate change.

Degradation of benzimidazoles by photoperoxidation: metabolites detection and ecotoxicity assessment using Raphidocelis subcapitata microalgae and Vibrio fischeri

Benzimidazoles (BZ) are among the most used drugs to treat parasitic diseases in both human and veterinary medicine. In this study, solutions fortified with albendazole (ABZ), fenbendazole (FBZ), and thiabendazole (TBZ) were subjected to photoperoxidation (UV/H₂O₂). The hydroxyl radicals generated by the process removed up to 99% of ABZ, and FBZ, in the highest dosage of H₂O₂ (i.e., 1.125 mmol L^-1; 4.8 kJ L^-1). In contrast, 20% of initial TBZ concentration remained in the residual solution. In the first 5 min of reaction (i.e., up to 0.750 mmol L^-1 of H₂O₂), formation of the primary metabolites of ABZ-ricobendazole (RBZ), albendazole sulfone (ABZ-SO₂), and oxfendazole (OFZ)-was observed. However, these reaction products were converted after the reaction time was doubled. The residual ecotoxicity was investigated using the Raphidocelis subcapitata microalgae and the marine bacteria Vibrio fischeri. The results for both microorganisms evidence that the residual solutions are less harmful to these microorganisms. However, after 30 min of reaction, the treated solution still presents a toxic effect for V. fischeri, meaning that longer reaction times are required to achieve an innocuous effluent.

A review on hospital wastewater treatment: A special emphasis on occurrence and removal of pharmaceutically active compounds, resistant microorganisms, and SARS-CoV-2

The hospital wastewater imposes a potent threat to the security of human health concerning its high vulnerability towards the outbreak of several diseases. Furthermore, the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic demanded a global attention towards monitoring viruses and other infectious pathogens in hospital wastewater and their removal. Apart from that, the presence of various recalcitrant organics, pharmaceutically active compounds (PhACs), etc. imparts a complex pollution load to water resources and ecosystem. In this review, an insight into the occurrence, persistence and removal of drug-resistant microorganisms and infectious viruses as well as other micro-pollutants have been documented. The performance of various pilot/full-scale studies have been evaluated in terms of removal of biochemical oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), total suspended solids (TSS), PhACs, pathogens, etc. It was found that many biological processes, such as membrane bioreactor, activated sludge process, constructed wetlands, etc. provided more than 80% removal of BOD, COD, TSS, etc. However, the removal of several recalcitrant organic pollutants are less responsive to those processes and demands the application of tertiary treatments, such as adsorption, ozone treatment, UV treatment, etc. Antibiotic-resistant microorganisms, viruses were found to be persistent even after the treatment of hospital wastewater, and high dose of chlorination or UV treatment was required to inactivate them. This article circumscribes the various emerging technologies, which have been used to treat PhACs and pathogens. The present review also emphasized the global concern of the presence of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in hospital wastewater and its removal by the existing treatment facilities.

Antibiotics, algal evaluations and subacute effects of abattoir wastewater on liver function enzymes, genetic and haematologic biomarkers in the freshwater fish, Clarias gariepinus

Abattoirs are positioned close to freshwaters in most developing countries where untreated wastewaters are discharged into with potential risk to aquatic life such as fish and ultimately human health. We assessed physicochemical parameters, antibiotics (oxytetracycline and diclofenac) and algal load of effluent collected from a major abattoir in Nigeria. Furthermore, liver function enzymes, genotoxic and haemotoxic effects of subacute concentration (10% of 96 hLC₅₀ value) of the wastewater were evaluated over a period of 28 d in Clarias gariepinus (The African Sharptooth Catfish). The 96 hLC₅₀ value of the abattoir wastewater against C. gariepinus was 154.14 mL/L (15.4%). Nitrates, phosphates, sulphates, chloride, ammonia, TDS, TSS, BOD₅ and heavy metals (Fe and Pb) in the wastewater were above permissible limits while diclofenac and oxytetracycline were below detection limit (BDL). Microalgae in the wastewater were mostly Bacilliariophyta (Navicula spp.) (45.64%) and euglenoids (Euglena and Phacus spp.) (49.48%). Liver function enzymes (LDH, AST, ALT) level were higher in exposed fishes except for ALP which was lower at day 28 compared to control levels. Erythrocytic genotoxic indices (nuclear abnormalities) were significantly higher (p < 0.05) in the exposed fishes particularly at day 28 compared to control. Haematologic indices level such as WBC, MCV MCH, MCHC increased significantly (p < 0.05) while lymphocytes, HGB, RBC, HCT levels decreased significantly (p < 0.05) in the exposed C. gariepinus by day 28 compared to control. These results demonstrate potential adverse effects posed to aquatic fish species in the Ogun River by the discharge of the abattoir effluent. The microalgae species identified in the effluent may be explored for pre-treatment of the effluent before discharge in order to prevent eutrophication and increased pollutant load in the River. The study results will contribute to evidence-based environmental risk management of the River which is relevant to the UN SDGs 6 (clean water and sanitation), 11 (sustainable cities and communities) and 14 (sustaining life below water).

Prevalence and hazardous impact of pharmaceutical and personal care products and antibiotics in environment: A review on emerging contaminants

Antibiotic resistance is a global health emergency linked to unrestrained use of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) as prophylactic agent and therapeutic purposes across various industries. Occurrence of pharmaceuticals are identified in ground water, surface water, soils, and wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) in ng/L to μg/L concentration range. The prevalence of organic compounds including antimicrobial agents, hormones, antibiotics, preservatives, disinfectants, synthetic musks etc. in environment have posed serious health concerns. The aim of this review is to elucidate the major sources accountable for emergence of antibiotic resistance. For this purpose, variety of introductory sources and fate of PPCPs in aquatic environment including human and veterinary wastes, aquaculture and agriculture related wastes, and other anthropogenic activities have been discussed. Furthermore, genetic and enzymatic factors responsible for transfer and appearance of antibiotic resistance genes are presented. Ecotoxicity of PPCPs has been studied in environment in order to present risk imposed to human and ecological health. As per published literature reports, the removal of antibiotics and related traces being difficult, couples the possibility of emergence of antibiotic resistance and hence sustainability in global water resources. Therefore, research on environmental behavior and control strategies should be conducted along with assessing their chronic toxicity to identify potential human and ecological risks.

Impact of intermittent feeding on polishing of micropollutants by moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBR)

Moving bed biofilm reactors (MBBRs) were placed at two wastewater treatment plants, where they were constantly fed with effluent and intermittently fed with primary wastewater. Each reactor was subjected to different feast/famine periods and flow rates of primary wastewater, thus the different organic and nutrient loads (chemical oxygen demand(COD), ammonium(NH4-N)) resulted in different feast-famine conditions applied to the biomass. In batch experiments, this study investigated the effects of various feast-famine conditions on the biodegradation of micropollutants by MBBRs applied as an effluent polishing step. Rate constants of micropollutant removals were found to be positively correlated to the load of the total COD and NH4-N, indicating that higher organic loads were favourable for the growth of micropollutant degraders in these MBBRs. Rate constant of atenolol was five times higher when the biomass was fed with the highest COD and NH4-N load than it was fed with the lowest COD and NH4-N load. For diclofenac, mycophenolic acid and iohexol, their maximum rate constants were obtained with feeding of COD and NH4-N of approximately 570 mgCOD/d and 40∼60 mgNH4-N/d respectively. This also supports the concept that co-metabolism (rather competition inhibition or catabolic repression) plays an important role in micropollutants biodegradation in wastewater.

Identification of indicator PPCPs in landfill leachates and livestock wastewaters using multi-residue analysis of 70 PPCPs: Analytical method development and application in Yangtze River Delta, China

The source apportionment of pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in the water environment based on indicators (i-PPCPs) requires a comprehensive characterization of various emission sources using reliable analytical methods for a wide spectrum of PPCPs. In this study, a robust and sensitive method based on solid phase extraction (SPE) and ultra-high performance liquid chromatography coupled with tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) for analyzing 70 PPCPs belonging to 17 therapeutic classes in landfill leachates and livestock wastewaters was developed. The SPE cartridges, sample pH, elution solvents and chelating agent additions were optimized, and acceptable recoveries (60- 130% for 67 target compounds), low method quantification limits (landfill leachate: 3- 1309 ng/L; livestock wastewater: 3- 686 ng/L) and high precisions (repeatability: 0- 20% for over 99% injections; reproducibility: 0- 20% for over 90% injections) were obtained. Using the optimized analytical method to characterize PPCPs in the typical landfill leachate and livestock wastewater in Yangtze River Delta, China, we found anthelmintics, which were first reported in landfill leachates globally, exhibited the highest concentration (albendazole, maximum concentration of 61.6 μg/L), and therefore proposed albendazole as one of the promising i-PPCP candidates in landfill leachates. In livestock wastewaters, antibiotics lincomycin was the most abundant PPCP (maximum concentration: 735 μg/L) and identified as an i-PPCP candidate for livestock-originated contamination. In addition, 15 non-antibiotic PPCPs were first investigated in the livestock wastewater in China and some non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, acetaminophen, diclofenac and naproxen, were detected at similar concentration level (1.16- 91.1 μg/L) to antibiotics, highlighting the necessity to include representative non-antibiotic PPCPs in the studies of emerging contaminants in livestock wastewaters. The developed method provides a tool to comprehensively investigate PPCPs in high-strength wastewater, and the preliminary findings in the characterization of typical landfill leachates and livestock wastewaters are helpful to select i-PPCPs for the source apportionment of PPCPs in Yangtze River Delta, China.

Environmental risk assessment of the anthelmintic albendazole in Eastern Africa, based on a systematic review

This study performs an environmental risk assessment (ERA) of the anthelmintic medicine albendazole (ABZ) in the eastern African region. A systematic literature search strategy was applied to obtain quantitative information on the physicochemical characteristics, the metabolization-fate, the ecotoxicity and the environmental occurrence in different countries worldwide serving as model regions. In addition, insilico tools were employed to obtain data on physicochemical characteristics and toxic hazards of ABZ and its metabolites. Moreover, ERA models were used to predict environmental concentrations in different compartments and compare them with the measured environmental concentrations. Finally, the environmental risk of ABZ in the eastern Africa was estimated by calculating the risk quotient (RQ), and its uncertainty estimated by Monte Carlo simulation. The predicted environmental concentrations of ABZ in surface water in the model region based on consumption (1.6-267 ng/L) were within the range of values obtained from the measured environmental concentrations of the same region (0.05-101,000 ng/L). Using these models with adapted input variables for eastern Africa, the predicted surface water concentration in that region was 19,600 ± 150 ng/L (95% CI). The calculated soil concentrations of ABZ in the model regions and the eastern Africa were found to be 0.057 ± 0.0 μg/kg and 0.022 ± 0.0 μg/kg, respectively. The environmental risk expressed as risk quotient of ABZ in eastern Africa estimated for the aquatic compartment (146 ± 1) indicated a significant environmental risk calling on appropriate actions from the competent authorities to reduce this risk in this region.

Assessment of water and sanitation systems at Palestinian healthcare facilities: pre- and post-COVID-19

The availability of safe drinking water and the proper management of wastewater in healthcare facilities are important pillars for maintaining safety of workers, patients, and visitors and protecting human health and environment. Water and sanitation services at 495 healthcare facilities in the West Bank of Palestine are assessed using the results of PCBS and MoH (2014) survey study. Services are reassessed after the COVID-10 pandemic using personal interviews with experts from healthcare facilities, regulatory authorities, and service providers. The results show that 92.1% of healthcare facilities were connected to public water networks, 12.9% of them purchased water tanks, and 10.8% of them depended on harvested rainwater which may cause contamination and waterborne diseases. Regardless the source of freshwater, the water quality has to be regularly examined and compared to local guidelines and international standards for health promotion. Almost 63.4% of healthcare facilities were not connected to wastewater networks and used either tight or porous cesspits. Once these cesspits are filled off, wastewater is randomly disposed into nearby valleys causing adverse environmental impacts on air, water, and land resources. Medical wastewater of hazardous substances should be treated before discharged to wastewater networks. Experts assured that although heightened procedures have been made by service providers to curb the spread of the COVID-19 disease, yet, more consistent protocols and stringent procedures are crucial. There have not been any new directives or procedures regarding the management of water supplies and wastewater services in the healthcare facilities. Stakeholder collaboration can help prevent the COVID-19 disease.

Occurrence of pharmaceuticals, hazard assessment and ecotoxicological evaluation of wastewater treatment plants in Costa Rica

The continuous release of pharmaceuticals from WWTP effluents to freshwater is a matter of concern, due to their potential effects on non-target organisms. The occurrence of pharmaceuticals in WWTPs and their associated hazard have been scarcely studied in Latin American countries. This study aimed at monitoring for the first time the occurrence of 70 pharmaceutical active compounds (PhACs) in WWTPs across Costa Rica; the application of the hazard quotient (HQ) approach coupled to ecotoxicological determinations permitted to identify the hazard posed by specific pharmaceuticals and toxicity of the effluents, respectively. Thirty-three PhACs were found, with 1,7-dimethylxanthine, caffeine, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, naproxen, ketoprofen and gemfibrozil being the most frequently detected (influents/effluents). HQ for specific pharmaceuticals revealed 24 compounds with high/medium hazard in influents, while the amount only decreased to 21 in effluents. The top HQ values were obtained for risperidone, lovastatin, diphenhydramine and fluoxetine (influent/effluent samples), plus caffeine (influent) and trimethoprim (effluent). Likewise, the estimation of overall hazard in WWTP samples (sum of individual HQ, ∑HQ) demonstrated that every influent and 96% of the effluents presented high hazard towards aquatic organisms. Ecotoxicological analysis (Daphnia magna, Lactuca sativa and Microtox test) revealed that 16.7% of the effluents presented toxicity towards all benchmark organisms; the phytotoxicity was particularly frequent, as inhibition values ≥20% in the germination index for L. sativa were obtained for all the effluents. The ∑HQ approach estimated the highest hazard in urban wastewater, while the ecotoxicological results showed the highest toxicity in hospital and landfill wastewater. Likewise, ecotoxicological results and ∑HQ values showed a rather poor correlation; instead, better correlations were obtained between ecotoxicological parameters and HQ values for some individual pharmaceuticals such as cephalexin and diphenhydramine. Findings from this study provide novel information on the occurrence of pharmaceuticals and the performance of WWTPs in the tropical region of Central America.

A review of the toxicity in fish exposed to antibiotics

Antibiotics are widely used in the treatment of human and veterinary diseases and are being used worldwide in the agriculture industry to promote livestock growth. However, a variety of antibiotics that are found in aquatic environments are toxic to aquatic organisms. Antibiotics are not completely removed by wastewater treatment plants and are therefore released into aquatic environments, which raises concern about the destruction of the ecosystem owing to their non-target effects. Since antibiotics are designed to be persistent and work steadily in the body, their chronic toxicity effects have been studied in aquatic microorganisms. However, research on the toxicity of antibiotics in fish at the top of the aquatic food chain is relatively poor. This paper summarizes the current understanding of the reported toxicity studies with antibiotics in fish, including zebrafish, to date. Four antibiotic types; quinolones, sulfonamides, tetracyclines, and macrolides, which are thought to be genetically toxic to fish have been reported to bioaccumulate in fish tissues, as well as in aquatic environments such as rivers and surface water. The adverse effects of these antibiotics are known to cause damage to developmental, cardiovascular, and metabolic systems, as well as in altering anti-oxidant and immune responses, in fish. Therefore, there are serious concerns about the toxicity of antibiotics in fish and further research and strategies are needed to prevent them in different regions of the world.

Determination of 19 anthelmintics in environmental water and sediment using an optimized PLE and SPE method coupled with UHPLC-MS/MS

A sensitive quantification method using pressurized liquid extraction (PLE) and solid phase extraction (SPE) coupled with ultra-high performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) was developed for determination of 19 anthelmintic drugs (ADs) belonging to seven structural groups (Benzimidazoles, Diphenylsulfides, Imidazothiazoles, Hexahydropyrazines, Macrocylic lactones, Salicylanilides, Tetrahydropyrimidines) in environmental water and sediment samples. Eleven SPE cartridges, sample pH, elution solvents were tested to determine the optimal conditions for extraction. Among these investigated SPE types, the best recoveries for 19 target ADs were obtained from Oasis HLB cartridge with 37-102%, 45-103%, 37-88%, 28-82% and 31-90% for spiked river water, tap water, rainwater, wastewater, and sediment respectively (with RSD < 15%), except for closantel. The 19 ADs were separated within 10 min by a BEH C18 column and monitored in both positive and negative ions modes with switching electrospray ionization source. The cross-talk interferences were solved by identification of secondary mass spectrum of substances through MRM-IDA-EPI scanning using Qtrap. These interference peaks could be efficiently eliminated by setting MRM segments or using Qtrap to obtain tertiary fragmented information. The developed methods were satisfactory in terms of linearity, accuracy, and precision, and used eight isotopically labeled compounds as internal standards to correct matrix effects. Method quantification limit (MQL) for 19 ADs was below 1.1 ng/L, 0.4 ng/L, 5.4 ng/L and 2.3 ng/g for river water, tap water, wastewater, and sediment, respectively. The validated method was successfully used to investigate the occurrence of anthelmintics in water and sediment samples from Chengdu, China. All ADs were detected in environment with the concentrations at ng/L level.
