Rapid and highly selective electrochemical sensor based on ZnS/Au-decorated f-multi-walled carbon nanotube nanocomposites produced via pulsed laser technique for detection of toxic nitro compounds

Low Temperature NO and CO Conversion with a Mechanistic Approach on Ru-Composed Cerium Oxide

Catalytic reduction of NO with CO at a lower temperature is an extremely challenging task, thus requiring conceivable surfaces to overcome such issues. Ru-substituted CeO2 catalysts prepared via the solution combustion method were employed in CO oxidation and NO-CO conversion studies. The characterization for material formation and surface structure was carried out through XRD, SEM, TEM, and BET surface area. The catalytic study revealed the promising behavior of 5% Ru in CeO2 for the 100% conversion of NO-CO at 150 °C, proving it to be an excellent exhaust material. These observed results are also supported by temperature-programmed studies, i.e. TPD of NO and CO in addition to NH3-TPD and H2-TPR for their convincible surface interaction that is inclined toward a significant change in the conversion path. Additionally, the proposed mechanism, based on the experimental evidence, sheds light on the NO-CO redox reaction, directing the reaction pathway toward the Langmuir-Hinshelwood and Mars-Van Krevelen-type route. Moreover, the exceptional performance can be attributed to the strategic incorporation of Ru in CeO2, where the strong interaction of Ru-Ce is able to gain a high synergy for NO and CO conversion.

Adsorption-coupled Fenton type reduction of bromate in water by high-yield polymer-derived ceramic-supported nano-zerovalent iron

Nano-zerovalent iron (nZVI) is a promising material for the removal of both organic and inorganic pollutants from contaminated water. This study investigates the potential of a novel composite of nZVI on a polymer-derived supporting ceramic (nZVI-PDC) synthesized via the liquid-phase reduction method for the simultaneous adsorption and Fenton-type reduction of bromate anion (BrO3-) in water. The nZVI nanoparticles were effectively anchored onto the PDC by impregnating high-yield carbon in a ferrous sulfate solution. The PDC facilitated the uniform dispersion of nZVI nanoparticles due to its multiple active sites distributed within mesocarbon cavities. The developed nZVI-PDC composite exhibited a high specific surface area of 837 m2 g-1 and an ordered mesoporous structure with a pore volume of 0.37 cm3 g-1. As an adsorbent, the nZVI-PDC composite exhibited a maximum adsorption capacity (qe) of 842 mg g-1 and a partition coefficient (KH) of 10.2 mg g-1 μM-1, as calculated by the pseudo-second-order model. As a catalyst, the composite demonstrated a reaction kinetic rate of 43.5 μmol g-1 h-1 within 6 h at pH 4, using a dosage of 60 mg L-1 nZVI-PDC and a concentration of 0.8 mmol L-1 H2O2. Comparatively, PDC exhibited a qe of 408 mg g-1, KH of 1.67 mg g-1 μM-1, and a reaction rate of 20.8 μmol g-1 h-1, while nZVI showed a qe of 456 mg g-1, KH of 2.30 mg g-1 μM-1, and a reaction rate of 27.2 μmol g-1 h-1. The modelling indicated that the nZVI-PDC composite followed pseudo-second-order kinetics. The remarkable removal efficiency of the nZVI-PDC composite was attributed to the synergistic effects between PDC and nZVI, where PDC facilitated charge transfer, promoting Fe2+ generation and the Fe3+/Fe2+ cycle. Overall, this work introduces a promising adsorption technology for the efficient removal of BrO3- from contaminated aqueous solutions, highlighting the significant potential of the nZVI-PDC composite in water purification applications.

Quantification of caffeine in coffee cans using electrochemical measurements, machine learning, and boron-doped diamond electrodes

Electrochemical measurements, which exhibit high accuracy and sensitivity under low contamination, controlled electrolyte concentration, and pH conditions, have been used in determining various compounds. The electrochemical quantification capability decreases with an increase in the complexity of the measurement object. Therefore, solvent pretreatment and electrolyte addition are crucial in performing electrochemical measurements of specific compounds directly from beverages owing to the poor measurement quality caused by unspecified noise signals from foreign substances and unstable electrolyte concentrations. To prevent such signal disturbances from affecting quantitative analysis, spectral data of voltage-current values from electrochemical measurements must be used for principal component analysis (PCA). Moreover, this method enables highly accurate quantification even though numerical data alone are challenging to analyze. This study utilized boron-doped diamond (BDD) single-chip electrochemical detection to quantify caffeine content in commercial beverages without dilution. By applying PCA, we integrated electrochemical signals with known caffeine contents and subsequently utilized principal component regression to predict the caffeine content in unknown beverages. Consequently, we addressed existing research problems, such as the high quantification cost and the long measurement time required to obtain results after quantification. The average prediction accuracy was 93.8% compared to the actual content values. Electrochemical measurements are helpful in medical care and indirectly support our lives.

Laser-Synthesized Ru-Anchored Few-Layer Black Phosphorus for Superior Hydrogen Evolution: Role of Acoustic Levitation

Electrochemical water splitting, driven by processed catalysts, is the most reasonable method for hydrogen production. This study demonstrates an activation phenomenon with ruthenium (Ru) nanoclusters on few-layered black phosphorus (BP), greatly enhancing the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Efficient BP exfoliation was achieved using acoustic levitators and pulsed laser irradiation in liquids (PLIL), yielding charge-transfer Ru-nanoclusters on modulated surfaces. Various PLIL parameters were examined for the optimal BP sheet size. After ruthenization, Ru's d-band center facilitated hydrogen adsorption via Ru-H bonding. Synergy between BP's charge-carrier properties and Ru's active sites boosted HER kinetics with an ultralow overpotential of 84 mV at 10 mA/cm2 in KOH. Additionally, the RuO2 || RuBP-2 electrolyzer demonstrated remarkable overall water splitting performance at ∼1.60 V at 10 mA/cm2. These results highlight the pivotal role of metal nanoclusters on exfoliated BP surfaces and offer a refined strategy for high-density electrocatalysts in energy conversion.

Nanotechnological advances in cancer: therapy a comprehensive review of carbon nanotube applications

Nanotechnology is revolutionising different areas from manufacturing to therapeutics in the health field. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs), a promising drug candidate in nanomedicine, have attracted attention due to their excellent and unique mechanical, electronic, and physicochemical properties. This emerging nanomaterial has attracted a wide range of scientific interest in the last decade. Carbon nanotubes have many potential applications in cancer therapy, such as imaging, drug delivery, and combination therapy. Carbon nanotubes can be used as carriers for drug delivery systems by carrying anticancer drugs and enabling targeted release to improve therapeutic efficacy and reduce adverse effects on healthy tissues. In addition, carbon nanotubes can be combined with other therapeutic approaches, such as photothermal and photodynamic therapies, to work synergistically to destroy cancer cells. Carbon nanotubes have great potential as promising nanomaterials in the field of nanomedicine, offering new opportunities and properties for future cancer treatments. In this paper, the main focus is on the application of carbon nanotubes in cancer diagnostics, targeted therapies, and toxicity evaluation of carbon nanotubes at the biological level to ensure the safety and real-life and clinical applications of carbon nanotubes.

Pomegranate plasma heterostructure regulated 1D biomass derived microtube networks for lightweight broadband microwave absorber

The excessive aggregation of magnetic metal particles and the resulting skin effect tend to cause a serious imbalance in impedance matching, which hinders its application in aerospace and military wave absorption fields. Obviously, effective dispersion configuration and network construction are two practical measures to develop broadband lightweight absorbers. Based on the recycling theme, pomegranate plasma heterostructure regulated one-dimensional (1D) biomass derived microtube networks are achieved through the conversion and utilization of waste Platanus ball fibers. The metal-organic framework strategy successfully avoids the hard agglomeration of metal particles. The pomegranate seed-like heterostructure effectively modulated the impedance of carbon microtubes, resulting in coordinated dielectric and magnetic losses. Such composites exhibited an effective absorbing bandwidth of 6.08 GHz and a minimum reflection loss of -29.8 dB. This work provides a new approach for constructing sustainable ultralight electromagnetic wave absorbers using plasmon modification and a 1D built-up network structure.

Efficient Photocatalytic Luminous Textile for Simulated Real Water Purification: Advancing Economical and Compact Reactors

The growing worldwide problem of wastewater management needs sustainable methods for conserving water supplies while addressing environmental and economic considerations. With the depletion of freshwater supplies, wastewater treatment has become critical. An effective solution is needed to efficiently treat the organic contaminants departing from wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Photocatalysis appears to be a viable method for eliminating these recalcitrant micropollutants. This study is focused on the degradation of Reactive Black 5 (RB5), a typical contaminant from textile waste, using a photocatalytic method. Titanium dioxide (TiO2) was deposited on a novel luminous fabric and illuminated using a light-emitting diode (LED). The pollutant degrading efficiency was evaluated for two different light sources: (i) a UV lamp as an external light source and (ii) a cold LED. Interestingly, the LED UV source design showed more promising results after thorough testing at various light levels. In fact, we note a 50% increase in mineralization rate when we triple the number of luminous tissues in the same volume of reactor, which showed a clear improvement with an increase in compactness.

Green synthesis of Multifunctional Zinc oxide Nanoparticles from Cordia myxa gum; and their Catalytic Reduction of Nitrophenol, Anticancer and Antimicrobial Activity

In situ exfoliated natural polysaccharide Cordia myxa (CMX) is used to promote the utilization of zinc-oxide nanoparticles for eco-friendly catalytic hydrogenation of p-nitrophenol (p-NP) and microbial growth inhibition. Polysaccharide-mediated biosynthetic nanocomposite materials are interesting because they are cheap, green, and environmentally friendly. This study uses CMX gum as a bioreduction to produce multifunctional, environmentally friendly zinc-oxide nanocomposites (ZnO NPs). The process involves a low reaction time and temperature and utilizes CMX as a reducing and stabilizing agent. The structural, morphological, and optical properties of the CMX-ZnO nanocomposite were characterized. The biosynthetic CMX-ZnO NPs exhibited robust catalytic activity and recycling capacity for rapidly oxidizing hazardous p-NPs. The complete reduction of 4-NP to CMX-ZnO NPs in excess NaBH4 was achieved within 15 min, with recyclability and pseudo-first-order kinetics with a rate constant of 0.2571 min-1. Additionally, human colon cancer (HCT116) and 3T3L1 cell lines were remarkably sensitive to the cytotoxic effects of ZnO nanoparticles. CMX-ZnO NPs exhibited potent antibacterial properties against human pathogenic gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria (Bacillus, Salmonella, E. coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa) based on the zone of inhibition measured by the disc-diffusion method. The significant antibacterial activity of CMX-ZnO NPs can overcome the current limitations associated with removing water-soluble organic pollutants and microbiological contaminants for long-term environmental sustainability.

Predictable and adjustable broadband gold nanorods for photothermal effects and foldable performances

Colloidal gold nanorods (GNRs) have demonstrated their potential to absorb light within specific wavelength bands and induce photothermal effects. However, the unpredictability and lack of adjustability in the broadband spectrum formed by the self-assembly of gold nanospheres or the coupling of various sizes of GNRs have posed significant challenges. To address this, we have developed broadband GNRs (BGNRs) with a predictable and adjustable extinction band in the visible and near-infrared regions. The BGNRs were synthesized by simply mixing GNRs with different aspect ratios, allowing for control over the bandwidths and positions of the extinction bands. Subsequently, the BGNRs were coated with silica and underwent surface modification. The resulting BGNRs@SiO2were then mixed with either polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) or polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) to create BGNRs@SiO2/PDMS (or PVDF) films. The BGNRs@SiO2/PDMS and BGNRs@SiO2/PVDF films both exhibit excellent photothermal performance properties. Additionally, the light absorption intensity of the BGNRs@SiO2/PVDF film linearly increases upon folding, leading to significantly enhanced photothermal performance after folding. This work demonstrates that plasmonic colloidal GNRs, without the need for coupling, can yield predictable and adjustable extinction bands. This finding holds great promise for future development and practical applications, particularly in the transfer of these properties to films.

Interfacial construction of SnS2/Zn0.2Cd0.8S nanopolyhedron heterojunctions for enhanced photocatalytic hydrogen evolution

ZnCdS, a metal chalcogenide solid solution, has attracted significant attention. However, two primary challenges hinder its widespread application in photocatalytic hydrogen evolution: the rapid recombination rate of photogenerated carriers and susceptibility to photo-oxidation in the aqueous environments. In this article, a facile hydrothermal route was employed for the first time to uniformly assemble SnS2 nanoparticles onto the surface of Zn0.2Cd0.8S (ZCS) nanopolyhedra. The intimate contact of two materials resulted in the formation of heterojunctions. By adjusting the content of SnS2, the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) performance was optimized to reach up to 12170 μmol/gh, which is 1.9 times of the pristine ZCS. Notably, the photocatalyst demonstrated remarkable stability with an apparent quantum yield (AQY) of 15.5% at 420 nm. The enhanced photocatalytic performance can be attributed to the following factors: (i) The heterojunction composite, with larger surface area and more micropores, provides additional active sites and exhibits high photocatalytic activity; (ii) The internal electric field accelerates the separation of photogenerated carriers and reduces the recombination rate of electron-hole pairs; (iii) The photogenerated holes can be quickly transferred to the valence band of SnS2 and react with triethanolamine, thereby significantly reducing the photo-oxidation of ZCS. This work not only proposed a feasible route to improve the photocatalytic activity of ZCS, but also provided insights into the role of heterojunctions and the reaction mechanism.

Triggering "signal-on" photoelectrochemical responses by heterojunction transition for selective detection of copper(II) based on Pd/MoS2@g-C3N4 nanocomposites

Controlling the concentration of copper(II) in aquatic systems is of importance for human health. Numerous traditional technologies to detect Cu2+ may encounter with limitations, such as high signal background and complicated operation. Herein, a highly selective photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensor is proposed for the "signal-on" detection of Cu2+ employing g-C3N4 nanosheets with MoS2 and Pd quantum dots deposited (Pd/MoS2@g-C3N4). Pd/MoS2@g-C3N4 could present the enhanced photocurrents of specific responses to Cu2+ under light irradiation. MoS2 quantum dots on the sensor are agglomerated into MoS2 bulk during sensing Cu2+, forming an efficient Z-scheme heterojunction. The heterojunction transition induced photoelectrons transferring from the bulk MoS2 to g-C3N4, resulting in "signal-on" PEC responses. Such Z-scheme heterojunction has conquered the traditional heterojunction towards "signal-on" mechanism, that was further verified by band structure measurements and DMPO spin trapping ESR analysis. Photocurrent intensities increased gradually with the addition of incremental Cu2+ concentrations, achieving a detection limit of 0.21 μM and a broad linear interval range from 1 μM to 1 mM with high selectivity and stability. This work may open a new door towards the in situ construction of g-C3N4-based Z-scheme heterojunctions for the signal-on PEC sensing platform, providing wide applications in environmental monitoring and food safety.

Single-Fe-Atom Catalyst for Sensitive Electrochemical Detection of Caffeic Acid

A single-atom catalyst (Fe SAs/-N-C) with excellent stability and conductivity was strategically fabricated via high-temperature calcination using the NiFe layered double hydroxide (LDH)/ZIF-8 composite as precursors. With the help of Ni as a catalyst, a great number of carbon nanotubes were produced whereby the isolated carbon bulks were interconnected to form an "island-bridge"-like 3D network structure, which greatly enhanced the exposure of active sites and the electron transfer. Accordingly, caffeic acid (CA) with versatile biological and pharmacological activities was chosen as the model analyte. The Fe SAs/-N-C with Fe-N4 as the catalytic active site was employed to establish the electrochemical sensing of CA with satisfactory sensitivity, selectivity, and long-term stability. This work expands the application range of single-atom catalysts and contributes a significant reference for the synthesis of hybrid double-atom catalysts.

Design of a versatile and selective electrochemical sensor based on dummy molecularly imprinted PEDOT/laser-induced graphene for nitroaromatic explosives detection

Considering the formidable explosive power and human carcinogenicity of nitroaromatic explosives, the implementation of an accurate and sensitive detection technology is imperative for ensuring public safety and monitoring post-blast environmental contamination. In the present work, a versatile and selective electrochemical sensor based on dummy molecularly imprinted poly (3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene)/laser-induced graphene (MIPEDOT/LIG) was successfully developed and the specific detection of multiple nitroaromatic explosives was realized in the single sensor. The accessible and nontoxic trimesic acid (TMA) and superior 3, 4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) were selected as the dummy-template and the functional monomer, respectively. The interaction between the functional monomer and the template, and the morphology, electrochemical properties and detection performance of the sensor were comprehensively investigated by ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy, cyclic voltammetry, and differential pulse voltammetry. Benefiting from the alliance of TMA and EDOT, the MIPEDOT/LIG sensor manifested outstanding selectivity and sensitivity for 2,4,6-trinitrotolueen (TNT), 2,4,6-trinitrophenol (TNP), 2,4-dinitrotoluene (DNT), 1,3,5-trinitrobenzene (TNB), 2,4-dinitrophenol (DNP), and 1,3-dinitrobenzene (DNB) (representative nitroaromatic explosives) with limits of determination of 1.95 ppb, 3.06 ppb, 2.49 ppb, 1.67 ppb, 1.94 ppb, and 4.56 ppb, respectively. The sensor also exhibited extraordinary reliability and convenience for environmental sample detection. Therefore, a perfect combination of versatility and selectivity in the MIPEDOT/LIG sensor was achieved. The findings of this work provide a new direction for the development of multi-target electrochemical sensors using a versatile dummy template for explosives detection.

From disinfectants to antibiotics: Enhanced biosafety of quaternary ammonium compounds by chemical modification

The excessive use of quaternary ammonium compounds (QACs) following the COVID-19 pandemic has raised substantial concerns regarding their biosafety. Overuse of QACs has been associated with chronic biological adverse effects, including genotoxicity or carcinogenicity. In particular, inadvertent intravascular administration or oral ingestion of QACs can lead to fatal acute toxicity. To enhance the biosafety and antimicrobial efficacy of QACs, this study reports a new series of QACs, termed as PACs, with the alkyl chain of benzalkonium substituted by a phthalocyanine moiety. Firstly, the rigid phthalocyanine moiety enhances the selectivity of QACs to bacteria over human cells and reduces alkyl chain's entropic penalty of binding to bacterial membranes. Furthermore, phthalocyanine neutralizes hemolysis and cytotoxicity of QACs by binding with albumin in plasma. Our experimental results demonstrate that PACs inherit the optical properties of phthalocyanine and validate the broad-spectrum antibacterial activity of PACs in vitro. Moreover, the intravascular administration of the most potent PAC, PAC1a, significantly reduced bacterial burden and ameliorated inflammation level in a bacteria-induced septic mouse model. This study presents a new strategy to improve the antimicrobial efficacy and biosafety of QACs, thus expanding their range of applications to the treatment of systemic infections.

Flexible electrode-based voltammetric detection of Y (III) ions in real water samples using an efficient CyDTA complexing strategy

The rapid detection of rare earth elements is crucial in various fields, such as materials science, biomedicine, and water quality assessment. However, no studies have reported on the detection of yttrium (Y) using electrochemical sensor-based devices. In this study, we present an innovative method for detecting Y(III) ions in aquatic environments using an electroanalytical detection platform. We have developed a complexation catalytic method that integrates trans-1,2-cyclohexanediaminetetraacetic acid (CyDTA) and silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs), thereby enhancing the adsorption and electrochemical response of Y(III) ions. The modified electrode demonstrates an 18-fold increase in the response signal of the Y(III) reduction peak compared to the bare LIG electrode. To elucidate the electrocatalytic mechanism, we conducted various interface characterization methods and DFT simulations. The Ag-CyDTA/LIG electrode exhibits excellent detection performance, with a broad linear dynamic range of 1 × 10-6 to 0.01 g/L and an exceptionally low detection limit of 0.02 μg/L. Significantly, we successfully employed the electrochemical sensing platform to analyze real water samples from rare earth ore, marking the first report on the voltammetric detection of Y(III) ions in real water samples using a flexible electrode. These findings offer a promising technical solution for the practical detection of Y(III) ions.

TiO2/MWCNT/Nafion-Modified Glassy Carbon Electrode as a Sensitive Voltammetric Sensor for the Determination of Hydrogen Peroxide

In this work we describe a straightforward approach for creating a nanocomposite comprising multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) and titanium dioxide (TiO2) using the hydrothermal technique, which is then characterized by scanning electron microscope (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectrometer (EDS), X-ray diffraction analysis (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), and thermal gravimetric analysis (TGA) to assess its properties. Nafion is employed as a reticular agent for the nanocomposite on the glassy carbon electrode (GCE), creating the MWCNT/TiO2/Nafion/GCE system. The electrochemical behavior of the system was evaluated using cyclic voltammetry, revealing its remarkable electrocatalytic activity for detecting hydrogen peroxide in water. The developed sensor showcased a broad linear response range of 14.00 to 120.00 μM, with a low detection limit of 4.00 μM. This electrochemical sensor provides a simple and highly sensitive method for detecting hydrogen peroxide in aqueous solutions and shows promising potential for various real-world applications, particularly in H2O2 monitoring.

Research progress in green synthesis of manganese and manganese oxide nanoparticles in biomedical and environmental applications - A review

Nanomaterials and nanotechnology have this unassailable position for environmental remediation and medicine. Currently, global environmental pollution and public health problems are increasing and need to be urgently addressed. Manganese (Mn) is one of the essential metal elements for plants and animals, it is necessary to integrate with nanotechnology. Mn and Mn oxide (MnO) nanoparticles (NPs) have applications in dye degradation, biomedicine, electrochemical sensors, plant and animal growth, and catalysis. However, the current research is limited, especially in terms of optimal synthesis of Mn and MnO NPs, separation, purification conditions, and the development of potential application areas is too basic and do not support by in-depth studies. Hence, this review comprehensively discusses the classification, green synthesis methods, and applications of Mn and MnO NPs in biomedical, environmental, and other fields and gives a perspective for the future.

Synthesis of hollow CuFe2O4 microspheres decorated nitrogen-doped graphene hybrid composites for broadband and efficient electromagnetic absorption

The development of graphene-based electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers with broad bandwidth, strong absorption and low filling ratio remains a big challenge. In this work, hollow copper ferrite microspheres decorated nitrogen-doped reduced graphene oxide (NRGO/hollow CuFe₂O₄) hybrid composites were prepared by a two-step route of solvothermal reaction and hydrothermal synthesis. Results of microscopic morphology analysis showed that the NRGO/hollow CuFe₂O₄ hybrid composites had a special entanglement structure between hollow CuFe₂O₄ microspheres and wrinkled NRGO. Moreover, the EMW absorption properties of as-prepared hybrid composites could be regulated by changing the additive amounts of hollow CuFe₂O₄. It was worth noting that when the additive amount of hollow CuFe₂O₄ was 15.0 mg, the attained hybrid composites showed the optimal EMW absorption performance. The minimum reflection loss reached up to -34.18 dB at a thin matching thickness of 1.98 mm and a low filling ratio of 20.0 wt%, and the corresponding effective absorption bandwidth was as large as 5.92 GHz, covering almost the whole Ku band. Furthermore, when the matching thickness was increased to 3.02 mm, the EMW absorption capacity was significantly enhanced, and the optimal reflection loss value of -58.45 dB was achieved. In addition, the possible EMW absorption mechanisms were proposed. Therefore, the structural design and composition regulation strategy presented in this work would provide a great reference value for the preparation of broadband and efficient graphene-based EMW absorbing materials.

High-entropy Pt18Ni26Fe15Co14Cu27 nanocrystalline crystals in situ grown on reduced graphene oxide with excellent electromagnetic absorption properties

The high entropy alloy is a powerful material due to its high hardness, strength, magnetic performance, corrosion resistance, and temperature stability. Moreover, when combined with reduced graphene oxide (rGO), it formed a novel material for electromagnetic (EM) absorption. In this work, monodisperse high entropy alloy nanocrystals combined with rGO to create a new type of high entropy alloy/rGO EM absorption material. A colloidal synthesis strategy was used to prepare high entropy Pt₁₈Ni₂₆Fe₁₅Co₁₄Cu₂₇ nanocrystals with a small size of around 3.3 nm. These nanocrystals then in situ grew uniformly on the surface of rGO to form Pt₁₈Ni₂₆Fe₁₅Co₁₄Cu₂₇/rGO nanocomposite, which were then characterized and tested for EM absorption performance. Compared to the pure high entropy Pt₁₈Ni₂₆Fe₁₅Co₁₄Cu₂₇ nanocrystals, the composite exhibited an improved EM absorption performance with a minimum reflection loss of -41.8 dB at 4.9 GHz and efficient EM wave absorption up to a bandwidth of 2.5 GHz in the 9.4-11.9 GHz band. This novel high entropy alloy/rGO composite has great potential to be used as an excellent material for EM wave absorption.

Spray dried date fruit extract with a maltodextrin/gum arabic binary blend carrier agent system: Process optimization and product quality

Bioactive compounds can be protected from degradation through encapsulation, increasing their bioavailability and shelf life. Spray drying is an advanced encapsulation technique mainly used for the processing of food-based bioactives. In this study, Box-Behnken design (BBD)-based response surface methodology (RSM) was used to study the effects of combined polysaccharide carrier agents and other spray drying parameters on encapsulating date fruit sugars obtained from a supercritical assisted aqueous extraction. The spray drying parameters were set at various levels: Air inlet temperature (150-170 °C), feed flow rate (3-5 mL/min), and carrier agent concentration (30-50 %). Under the optimized conditions (inlet temperature of 170 °C, the feed flow rate of 3 mL/min, and carrier agent concentration of 44 %), a maximum sugar powder yield of 38.62 % with 3.5 % moisture, 18.2 % hygroscopicity and 91.3 % solubility was obtained. The tapped density and particle density of the dried date sugar were estimated as 0.575 g cm-3 and 1.81 g cm-3, respectively, showing its potential for easy storage. In addition, scanning electron microscope (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis revealed better microstructural stability of the fruit sugar product, which is essential for commercial applications. Thus, the hybrid carrier agent system (maltodextrin and gum arabic) can be considered a potential carrier agent for producing stable date sugar powder with longer shelf-life and desirable characteristics in the food industry.

Recent progress on plant extract-mediated biosynthesis of ZnO-based nanocatalysts for environmental remediation: Challenges and future outlooks

The plant extract mediated green synthesis of nanomaterials has attracts enormous interest due to its cost-effectiveness, greener, and environmentally friendly. It is also considered as an alternative and facile method in which the phytochemicals can be used as a natural capping and reducing agents and helped to produce nanomaterials with high surface area, different sizes, and shapes. One of the materials fabricated using green methods is zinc oxide (ZnO) semiconductor due to its enormous applications in different field areas. In this review, an overview of recent progress on green synthesized ZnO-based catalysts and various modification methods for the purpose of enhancing the catalytic activity of ZnO and the corresponding structural-activity and interactions towards the removal of pollutants are highlighted. Particularly, the plant extract mediated ZnO-based photocatalysts application for the removal of pollutants via photocatalytic degradation, reduction reaction, and adsorption mechanism are demonstrated. Besides, the opportunities, challenges, and future outlooks of ZnO-based materials for environmental remediation with green and sustainable methods are also included. We believe that this review is a timely and comprehensive review on the recent progress related to plant extract mediated ZnO-based nanocatalysts synthesis and applications for environmental remediation.

Development of in-situ electrochemical heavy metal ion sensor using integrated 1D/0D/1D hybrid by MWCNT and CQDs supported MnO2 nanomaterial

An integrated 1D/0D/1D hybrid nanomaterial was prepared from MWCNT supported carbon quantum dots @ MnO₂ nanomaterial for a sensitive and selective electrochemical heavy metal ion sensor by hydrothermal methods. The developed nanomaterials were characterized by various analytical methods such as FESEM, HRTEM, XRD, FTIR, EDX and elemental mapping study, and also its electrochemical properties of the prepared samples were investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) analysis. Differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) analysis has been used to investigate the quantitative detection of heavy metal ions such as cadmium and chromium on modified electrodes under optimal conditions. The in-situ electrochemical sensitivity and selectivity of the samples were determined by varying various parameters, such as the concentration of heavy metal ions, different electrolytes and electrolyte pH. The observed DPV results show that prepared MWCNT (0.05 wt%) and CQD (0.1 wt%) supported MnO₂ nanoparticles show effective detection response for chromium (IV) metal ion. In particular, 0D CQD, 1D MWCNT, and MnO₂ hybrid nanostructures produced a synergistic effect among them, resulting in strong electrochemical performance of the prepared samples against the target metal ions.

Synthesis of a one-dimensional carbon nanotube-decorated three-dimensional crucifix carbon architecture embedded with Co7Fe3/Co5.47N nanoparticles for high-performance microwave absorption

Low-dimensional cell-decorated three-dimensional (3D) hierarchical structures are considered excellent candidates for achieving remarkable microwave absorption. In the present work, a one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanotube (CNT)-decorated 3D crucifix carbon framework embedded with Co₇Fe₃/Co_5.47N nanoparticles (NPs) was fabricated by the in-situ pyrolysis of a trimetallic metal-organic framework (MOF) precursor (ZIF-ZnFeCo). Co₇Fe₃/Co_5.47N NPs were uniformly dispersed on the carbon matrix. The 1D CNT nanostructure was well regulated on the 3D crucifix surface by changing the pyrolysis temperature. The synergistic effect of 1D CNT and the 3D crucifix carbon framework increased the conductive loss, and Co₇Fe₃/Co_5.47N NPs induced interfacial polarization and magnetic loss; thus, the composite manifested superior microwave absorption performance. The optimum absorption intensity was -54.0 dB, and the effective absorption frequency bandwidth reached 5.4 GHz at a thickness of 1.65 mm. The findings of this work could provide significant guidance for the fabrication of MOF-derived hybrids for high-performance microwave absorption applications.

Moving beyond Ti2C3Tx MXene to Pt-Decorated TiO2@TiC Core-Shell via Pulsed Laser in Reshaping Modification for Accelerating Hydrogen Evolution Kinetics

Phase engineering of nanocatalysts on specific facets is critical not only for enhancing catalytic activity but also for intensely understanding the impact of facet-based phase engineering on electrocatalytic reactions. In this study, we successfully reshaped a two-dimensional (2D) MXene (Ti₃C₂T_x) obtained by etching Ti₃AlC₂ MAX via a pulsed laser irradiation in liquid (PLIL) process. We produced a TiO₂@TiC core-shell structure in spheres with sizes of 200-350 nm, and then ∼2 nm ultrasmall Pt NPs were decorated on the surface of the TiO₂@TiC core-shell using the single-step PLIL method. These advances allow for a significant increase in electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity under visible light illumination. The effect of optimal Pt loading on PLIL time was identified, and the resulting Pt/TiO₂@TiC/Pt-5 min sample demonstrated outstanding electrochemical and photoelectrochemical performance. The photoelectrochemical HER activity over Pt/TiO₂@TiC/Pt-5 min catalyst exhibits a low overpotential of 48 mV at 10 mA/cm² and an ultralow Tafel slope of 54.03 mV/dec with excellent stability of over 50 h, which is hydrogen production activity even superior to that of the commercial Pt/C catalysts (55 mV, 62.45 mV/dec). This investigation not only serves as a potential for laser-dependent phase engineering but also provides a reliable strategy for the rational design and fabrication of highly effective nanocatalysts.

Alkali functionalized carbon nitride with internal van der Waals heterostructures: Directional charge flow to enhance photocatalytic hydrogen production

Improving the charge separation and migration in graphitic carbon nitride (CN) is the critical issue to enhance its photocatalytic performance, but still remains very challenging. Herein, the alkali metals were introduced into the interlayer and intralayer of CN to tackle this challenge. The lithium sodium-modifying carbon nitride layer (LiNaCN2) and the adjacent CN layer formed a van der Waals heterostructures (VDWHs), while the potassium-intercalating served as interlayer charge transfer channels to induce the directional charge flow. Experiments and theoretical calculations indicated that such unique construction provided intrinsic driving force to obtain the electrons from LiNaCN2 to CN via directional potassium channels. In accordance with the theoretical prediction, a dramatically red-shift of the light absorption feature was achieved for interlayer potassium-intercalating and intralayer lithium sodium-modifying co-functionalized carbon nitride (LiNaCN-K-CN2) to show narrowed bandgap energy of 2.15 eV. This directional charge flow in CN resulted in the rapid transfer of charge carriers in both interlayer as well as intralayer of CN, which reduced the electronic localization as well as extended the π conjugative effect. Consequently, the LiNaCN-K-CN2 displayed stable and remarkable hydrogen production rate of about 2.46 mmol g^-1 h^-1 with apparent quantum yield (AQY) of about 13.68% at 435 nm, which was 22 folds higher than that of the pristine CN. This finding provides the feasible strategy to precisely tune the directions of charge transfer for high-performance CN-based photocatalysts.

Electrochemical detection of arsenic (III) hazardous chemicals using cubic CsPbBr3 single crystals: Structural insights from DFT study

Long-term exposure to the highly toxic heavy metal arsenic can harm ecological systems and pose serious health risks to humans. Arsenic pollutant in water and the food chain must be addressed, and active prompt detection of As(III) is essential. The development of an effective detection method for As(III) ions is urgently needed to slow the alarming growth of arsenic pollution in the environment and safeguard the well-being of future generations. This study presents the results of our exhaustive investigation into cubic CsPbBr₃ single crystals, the glassy carbon (GC) electrode modification with CsPbBr₃ single crystals prepared by direct solvent evaporation, as well as our observations of the material's remarkable electrocatalytic properties and exceptional anti-interference sensing of As(III) ions in neutral pH media. The developed CsPbBr₃/GC is exceptionally useful for the ultra-sensitive and specific identification of arsenic in water, exhibiting a detection limit of 0.381 μmol/L, a rapid response across a defined range of 0.1-25 μmol/L, and an ultra-sensitivity of 0.296 μA/μmolL^-1. CsPbBr₃/GCE (prepared without a specific reagent) is superior to other modified electrodes used as sensors in electrocatalytic activity, detection limit, analytical sensitivity, and stability response.

Removal of Lead from Wastewater Using Synthesized Polyethyleneimine-Grafted Graphene Oxide

In this work, polyethyleneimine-grafted graphene oxide (PEI/GO) is synthesized using graphene, polyethyleneimine, and trimesoyl chloride. Both graphene oxide and PEI/GO are characterized by a Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer, a scanning electron microscope (SEM), and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Characterization results confirm that polyethyleneimine is uniformly grafted on the graphene oxide nanosheets and, thus, also confirm the successful synthesis of PEI/GO. PEI/GO adsorbent is then evaluated for the removal of lead (Pb²⁺) from aqueous solutions, and the optimum adsorption is attained at pH 6, contact time of 120 min, and PEI/GO dose of 0.1 g. While chemosorption is dominating at low Pb²⁺ concentrations, physisorption is dominating at high concentrations and the adsorption rate is controlled by the boundary-layer diffusion step. In addition, the isotherm study confirms the strong interaction between Pb²⁺ ions and PEI/GO and reveals that the adsorption process obeys well the Freundlich isotherm model (R² = 0.9932) and the maximum adsorption capacity (q_m) is 64.94 mg/g, which is quite high compared to some of the reported adsorbents. Furthermore, the thermodynamic study confirms the spontaneity (negative ΔG° and positive ΔS°) and the endothermic nature (ΔH° = 19.73 kJ/mol) of the adsorption process. The prepared adsorbent (PEI/GO) offers a potential promise for wastewater treatment because of its fast and high uptake removal capacity and could be used as an effective adsorbent for the removal of Pb²⁺-ions and other heavy metals from industrial wastewater.

Boosted photocatalytic performance of OVs-rich BiVO4 hollow microsphere self-assembled with the assistance of SDBS

In this study, monoclinic phase bismuth vanadate (BiOV₄) photocatalyst with unique hollow microsphere morphology was successfully prepared by a hydrothermal method in the existence of sodium dodecyl benzene sulfonate (SDBS). The prepared photocatalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron (SEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectrometer (XPS) and UV-vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (UV-vis DRS). Experimental results show that SDBS definitely changes the microstructure of BiVO₄, which is allocated to the template role of SDBS in the preparation process. Moreover, the hydrothermal treatment time is also of crucial importance in affecting the structure and morphology of the photocatalysts, and the optimal hydrothermal treatment time for the formation of hollow microsphere is 24 h. Furthermore, the feasible growth mechanism for hollow microsphere was elaborated. Enriched oxygen vacancies (OVs) are introduced into BiOV₄ prepared with SDBS, largely elevating the separation efficiency of photo-generated charges. Under visible light irradiation, the photocatalytic activities of BiOV₄ for destruction of rhodamine (RhB) were evaluated. The photocatalytic degradation rate constant of RhB on the 3SBVO is 2.23 times of that on the blank BiOV₄ as the mass ratio of SDBS/BiOV₄ is 3 %. Photocatalytic degradation mechanism of BiVO₄ toward detoxification of organic pollutants was presented.

The development of cobalt phosphide co-catalysts on BiVO4 photoanodes to improve H2O2 production

Photoanodic hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) production via water oxidation is limited by low yields and poor selectivity. Herein, four variations of cobalt phosphides, including pristine CoP and Co₂P crystals, and two mixed-phase cobalt phosphides (CoP/Co₂P) with different ratios, were applied as co-catalysts on the BiVO₄ (BVO) photoanode to improve H₂O₂ production. The optimal yield and selectivity were approximately 9.6 µmol‧h^-1‧cm^-2 and 25.2 % at a voltage bias of 1.7 V vs reversible hydrogen electrode (V_RHE) under sunlight illumination, respectively. This performance is approximately 1.8 times that of pristine BVO photoanode. The roles of the Co and P sites were investigated. In particular, the Co site promotes the breaking of one HO bond in water to form OH^• radicals, which is the rate-determining step in H₂O₂ production. The P site plays an important role in the desorption of H₂O₂ formed from the catalyst, which is responsible for the recovery of fresh catalytic sites. Among the four samples, Co₂P exhibited the best performance for H₂O₂ production because it had the highest rate of OH^• formation owing to its improved accumulation property. This study offers a rational design strategy for co-catalysts for photoanodic H₂O₂ production.

In situ studies on free-standing synthesis of nanocatalysts via acoustic levitation coupled with pulsed laser irradiation

Acoustic levitation is a distinctive and versatile tool for levitating and processing free-standing single droplets and particles. Liquid droplets suspended in an acoustic standing wave provide container-free environments for understanding chemical reactions by avoiding boundary effects and solid surfaces. We attempted to use this strategy for the production of well-dispersed uniform catalytic nanomaterials in an ultraclean confined area without the addition of external reducing agents or surfactants. In this study, we report on the synthesis of gold and silver nanoparticles (NPs) via acoustic levitation coupled with pulsed laser irradiation (PLI). In situ UV-Visible and Raman spectroscopic techniques were performed to monitor the formation and growth of gold and silver NPs. The PLI was used for the photoreduction of targeted metal ions present in the levitated droplets to generate metal NPs. Additionally, the cavitation effect and bubble movement accelerate the nucleation and decrease the size of NPs. The synthesized Au NPs with ∼ 5 nm size showed excellent catalytic behavior towards the conversion of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol. This study may open a new door for synthesizing various functional nanocatalysts and for achieving new chemical reactions in suspended droplets.

Flexible electrochemical sensor with Fe/Co bimetallic oxides for sensitive analysis of glucose in human tears

The construction of uniformly dispersed structure with abundant active sites is crucial for fast electron transport and advancing electrocatalytic reactions. Herein, Fe_xCo_yO₄-rGO was prepared by depositing Fe and Co bimetallic oxides in-situ on reduced graphene oxide through a simple process combined hydrothermal reaction and calcination. Fe was elaborately introduced into the synthesis of metal oxides to alleviate the aggregation of cobalt oxides and obtain nanocomposites with homogeneously structured and abundant redox sites, and the bimetallic oxides nanomaterials had enhanced electrocatalysis under the synergistic effect. The flexible electrode prepared from Fe_xCo_yO₄-rGO exhibited excellent detection performance for glucose with a detection limit down low to 0.07 μM and a sensitivity of 1510 μM cm^-2 mA^-1. The adoption of flexible substrates improved the wearability of the electrode and broadened its practicality for detecting biomarkers on the skin surface. The constructed sensor was successfully used in the dynamic analysis of glucose content in tears, and the results were highly consistent with the test outcome of a commercial test kit, demonstrating its application prospects in non-invasive epidermal diabetes mellitus diagnosis.

Colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions with various chromogenic materials: Strategies and applications

Detection of heavy metal ions has drawn significant attention in environmental and food area due to their threats to the human health and ecosystem. Colorimetry is one of the most frequently-used methods for the detection of heavy metal ions owing to its simplicity, easy operation and rapid on-site detection. The development of chromogenic materials and their sensing mechanisms are the key research direction in the area of colorimetric method. Since each chromogenic material has their unique optical and chemical properties, they have totally different colorimetric sensing mechanisms. This review focuses on the chromogenic materials and their sensing strategies for the colorimetric detection of heavy metal ions. We divide the chromogenic materials into three types, including organic materials, inorganic materials, and other materials. As for each type of chromogenic material, we discuss their detailed sensing strategies, sensing performance, and real sample applications. Moreover, current challenges and perspectives related to the colorimetry of heavy metal ions are also discussed in this review. The aim of this review is to help readers to better understand the principles of colorimetric methods for heavy metal ions and push the development of rapid detection of heavy metal ions.

Sustainable removal of nitrite waste to value-added ammonia on Cu@Cu2O core-shell nanostructures by pulsed laser technique

The biochemical reduction of nitrite (NO₂^-) ions to ammonia (NH₃) requires six electrons and is catalyzed by the cytochrome c NO₂^- reductase enzyme. This biological reaction inspired scientists to explore the reduction of nitrogen oxyanions, such as nitrate (NO₃^-) and NO₂^- in wastewater, to produce the more valuable NH₃ product. It is widely known that copper (Cu)-based nanoparticles (NPs) are selective for the NO₃^- reduction reaction (NO₃^-RR), but the NO₂^-RR has not been well explored. Therefore, we attempted to address the electrocatalytic conversion of NO₂^- to NH₃ using Cu@Cu₂O core-shell NPs to simultaneously treat wastewater by removing NO₂^- and producing valuable NH₃. The Cu@Cu₂O core-shell NPs were constructed using the pulsed laser ablation of Cu sheet metal in water. The core-shell nanostructure of these particles was confirmed by various characterization techniques. Subsequently, the removal of NO₂^- and the ammonium (NH₄⁺)-N yield rate were estimated using the Griess and indophenol blue methods, respectively. Impressively, the Cu@Cu₂O core-shell NPs exhibited outstanding NO₂^-RR activity, demonstrating a maximum NO₂^- removal efficiency of approximately 94% and a high NH₄⁺-N yield rate of approximately 0.03 mmol h^-1.cm^-2 at -1.6 V vs. a silver/silver chloride reference electrode under optimal conditions. The proposed NO₂^-RR mechanism revealed that the (111) facet of Cu favors the selective conversion of NO₂^- to NH₃ via a six-electron transfer. This investigation may offer a new insight for the rational design and detailed mechanistic understanding of electrocatalyst architecture for the effective conversion of NO₂^- to NH₄⁺.

Heterogeneous Cu2O-Au nanocatalyst anchored on wood and its insight for synergistic photodegradation of organic pollutants

In this study, a Cu₂O-Au nanoparticles (NPs) heterojunction catalyst anchored on wood was developed by in situ reduction and hydrothermal treatment, and the properties of the catalyst were systematically characterized. The catalyst exhibited prominent photocatalysis of methyl orange (MO, 0.169 min^{- 1}), and tetracycline (TC, 0.122 min^-1) which were degraded completely within 20 min. Even after four recyclings, the efficiency of MO degradation by the catalyst remained at 80%. The natural wood with three-dimensional porous structures acted as a reducing agent and a stabilizer for Au NPs and Cu₂O, which helped to maintain high performance and reusability. The presence of Au NPs mediated the light-induced electron transfer and enhanced the absorption of visible light for promoting photocatalytic activity. The intermediates of contaminants within the degradation process were characterized by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry. Additionally, the photogenerated superoxide radicals and holes were identified by electron spin resonance. Thus, the potential degradation mechanism catalyzed by the Cu₂O-Au NPs-wood was proposed. This findings of this study valorizes biomass as a photocatalyst for wastewater remediation.

Unraveling the Synergy of Anion Modulation on Co Electrocatalysts by Pulsed Laser for Water Splitting: Intermediate Capturing by In Situ/Operando Raman Studies

Herein, the authors produce Co-based (Co₃ (PO₄ )₂ , Co₃ O₄ , and Co₉ S₈ ) electrocatalysts via pulsed laser ablation in liquid (PLAL) to explore the synergy of anion modulation on phase-selective active sites in the electrocatalytic hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Co₃ (PO₄ )₂ displays an ultralow overpotential of 230 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 with 48.5 mV dec^-1 Tafel slope that outperforms the state-of-the-art Ir/C in OER due to its high intrinsic activity. Meanwhile, Co₉ S₈ exhibits the highest HER performance known to the authors among the synthesized Co-based catalysts, showing the lowest overpotential of 361 mV at 10 mA cm^-2 with 95.8 mV dec^-1 Tafel slope in the alkaline medium and producing H₂ gas with ≈500 mmol g^-1 h^-1 yield rate under -0.45 V versus RHE. The identified surface reactive intermediates over in situ electrochemical-Raman spectroscopy reveal that cobalt(hydr)oxides with higher oxidation states of Co-cation forming under oxidizing potentials on the electrode-electrolyte surface of Co₃ (PO₄ )₂ facilitate the OER, while Co(OH)₂ facilitate the HER. Notably, the fabricated two-electrode electrolyzers using Co₃ (PO₄ )₂ , Co₃ O₄ , and Co₉ S₈ electrocatalysts deliver the cell potentials ≈2.01, 2.11, and 1.89 V, respectively, at 10 mA cm^-2 . This work not only shows PLAL-synthesized electrocatalysts as promising candidates for water splitting, but also provides an underlying principle for advanced energy-conversion catalysts and beyond.

Unveiling the effect of gas treatment on the electronic structure of carbon nanotube-supported Pd catalysts for electroreduction of H2O2 and Heck reaction

This study explored the impact of gas treatments on the structures of multi-walled carbon nanotubes supported Pd (CNT-Pd) catalysts used for electrocatalytic H₂O₂ reduction and the Heck cross-coupling reaction. The CNT-Pd catalyst was prepared by anchoring Pd nanoparticles on thiolated CNTs. XPS was conducted to examine the surface composition and electronic structure changes of the CNT-Pd catalyst before and after gas treatment. The XPS results revealed that as-prepared CNT-Pd contains at least two different oxidation states on the surface, whereon their proportions depend on the gas used for treatment. Treatment with H₂ leads to Pd(0) enrichment near the surface, while O₂ treatment causes Pd(Ⅱ) enrichment of CNT-Pd. All catalysts containing both Pd(0) and Pd(Ⅱ) were active toward H₂O₂ reduction, and the Heck cross-coupling reaction of n-butyl acrylate and 4-iodotoluene; increased proportion of metallic Pd(0) boosted the catalytic reaction. However, the catalyst stability increased as the amount of Pd(II) increased.

Schiff Base Aggregation-Induced Emission Luminogens for Sensing Applications: A Review

Fluorescence sensing can not only identify a target substrate qualitatively but also achieve the purpose of quantitative detection through the change of the fluorescence signal. It has the advantages of immense sensitivity, rapid response, and excellent selectivity. The proposed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) concept solves the problem of the fluorescence of traditional fluorescent molecules becoming weak or quenched in high concentration or aggregated state conditions. Schiff base fluorescent probes have the advantages of simple synthesis, low toxicity, and easy design. They are often used for the detection of various substances. In this review we cover late developments in Schiff base compounds with AIE characteristics working as fluorescence sensors.

Non-aqueous onion like nano-carbons from waste diesel-soot used as FRET-based sensor for sensing of nitro-phenols

Herein, a simple-functionalization method is described to prepare the oleylamine functionalized non-aqueous version of onion-like nanocarbons (ONC-OA), where ONC was isolated from the waste pollutant soot exhausted from the diesel engine. The surface group analysis of ONC-OA has been investigated via Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy. ONC-OA shows blue fluorescence with a quantum yield of ∼6% in tetrahydrofuran (THF). The fluorescence-based sensing applications of ONC-OA has been investigated for selective sensing of toxic aromatic nitro-phenols compounds (para-nitro, dinitro, and trinitro phenols) from the tested many nitro organic compounds. Based on the limit of detection values, ONC-OA shows much better results for tri-nitro phenol compared to di and mono nitrophenol. To understand the quenching mechanism, a time-resolved photoluminescence analysis of the sensor with and without the addition of quenchers is performed. The effective lowering in fluorescence lifetime of the sensor after the addition of quenchers concludes that the quenching observed is majorly due to the Förster Resonance Energy Transfer (FRET) mechanism. The real-life application of ONC-OA was analyzed by external spiking of N-PhOHs in soil samples.

Recent advances on rapid detection and remediation of environmental pollutants utilizing nanomaterials-based (bio)sensors

Environmental safety has become a significant issue for the safety of living species, humans, and the ecosystem as a consequence of the harmful and detrimental consequences of various pollutants such as pesticides, heavy metals, dyes, etc., emitted into the surroundings. To resolve this issue, various efforts, legal acts, scientific and technological perspectives have been embraced, but still remain a global concern. Furthermore, due to non-portability, complex detection, and inappropriate on-site recognition of sophisticated laboratory tools, the real-time analysis of these environmental contaminants has been limited. As a result of innovative nano bioconjugation and nanofabrication techniques, nanotechnology enables enhanced nanomaterials (NMs) based (bio)sensors demonstrating ultra-sensitivity and a short detection time in real-time analysis, as well as superior sensitivity, reliability, and selectivity have been developed. Several researchers have demonstrated the potent detection of pollutants such as Hg²⁺ ion by the usage of AgNP-MD in electronic and optoelectronic methods with a detection limit of 5-45 μM which is quite significant. Taking into consideration of such tremendous research, herein, the authors have highlighted 21st-century strategies towards NMs based biosensor technology for pollutants detection, including nano biosensors, enzyme-based biosensors, electrochemical-based biosensors, carbon-based biosensors and optical biosensors for on-site identification and detection of target analytes. This article will provide a brief overview of the significance of utilizing NMs-based biosensors for the detection of a diverse array of hazardous pollutants, and a thorough understanding of the detection processes of NMs-based biosensors, as well as the limit of quantification (LOQ) and limit of detection (LOD) values, rendering researchers to focus on the world's need for a sustainable earth.

Fundamentals and comprehensive insights on pulsed laser synthesis of advanced materials for diverse photo- and electrocatalytic applications

The global energy crisis is increasing the demand for innovative materials with high purity and functionality for the development of clean energy production and storage. The development of novel photo- and electrocatalysts significantly depends on synthetic techniques that facilitate the production of tailored advanced nanomaterials. The emerging use of pulsed laser in liquid synthesis has attracted immense interest as an effective synthetic technology with several advantages over conventional chemical and physical synthetic routes, including the fine-tuning of size, composition, surface, and crystalline structures, and defect densities and is associated with the catalytic, electronic, thermal, optical, and mechanical properties of the produced nanomaterials. Herein, we present an overview of the fundamental understanding and importance of the pulsed laser process, namely various roles and mechanisms involved in the production of various types of nanomaterials, such as metal nanoparticles, oxides, non-oxides, and carbon-based materials. We mainly cover the advancement of photo- and electrocatalytic nanomaterials via pulsed laser-assisted technologies with detailed mechanistic insights and structural optimization along with effective catalytic performances in various energy and environmental remediation processes. Finally, the future directions and challenges of pulsed laser techniques are briefly underlined. This review can exert practical guidance for the future design and fabrication of innovative pulsed laser-induced nanomaterials with fascinating properties for advanced catalysis applications.
