Abstract
AIMS Previous studies have investigated the relationship between heart failure (HF) and levels of zinc and copper, but conflicting results have been reported. This meta-analysis aims to clarify the role of zinc and copper in HF progression by examining the associations between HF and concentrations of these minerals. METHODS AND RESULTS We utilized STATA 12.0 software to calculate the standard mean difference (SMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI) for serum zinc and copper levels in patients with HF compared with healthy controls (HCs). The meta-analysis indicated a lower serum zinc level in patients with HF compared with HCs, using a random effects model (SMD = -0.77; 95% CI: -1.01, -0.54; I2 = 61.9%, the P-value for Q test = 0.002). Additionally, the meta-analysis showed an increased serum copper level in patients with HF compared with HCs, using a random effects model (SMD = 0.66; 95% CI: 0.09, 1.23; I2 = 93.8%, the P-value for Q test < 0.001). Meta-regression analysis indicated that publication year, age, and gender were not responsible for heterogeneity across studies. CONCLUSIONS This meta-analysis demonstrates that patients with HF have lower serum zinc and higher copper concentrations compared with healthy subjects. However, the potential of zinc supplementation as a therapy for HF should be approached with caution. The heterogeneity among the included studies was found to be high. It is recommended that further well-designed large sample studies be conducted to validate these findings.

Abstract
The impact of metal exposure on cardiovascular diseases has become an increasingly concerning topic. To date, few studies have investigated the relationship between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD (Cardiovascular disease). This China multi-ethnic cohort study explored the association between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD in Chinese adults. The study included a sample size of 9878 people. Logistic regression analysis was used to examine the correlation between urinary copper, urinary zinc, and the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD prevalence. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) analysis was used to investigate the potential dose-response relationships among copper-to-zinc ratio, urinary copper, urinary zinc, and CVD prevalence. In addition, the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) regression method was used to identify significant risk factors associated with CVD, leading to the development of a nomogram. The predictive performance of the nomogram model for CVD was assessed using the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve and the area under the curve (AUC). Compared with the copper-to-zinc ratio in Q1, the copper-to-zinc ratio in Q4 was associated with CVD after adjusting for all potential confounders (Model 3) (Q4, odds ratio [OR] 0.608, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.416-0.889, P = 0.010). After adjusting for all potential confounders (Model 3), urinary copper levels in Q4 were associated with CVD (Q4, odds ratio [OR] 0.627, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.436-0.902, P = 0.012). No significant difference was found between urinary zinc levels and CVD. The RCS showed a linear dose-response relationship between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD (P for overall = 0.01). The nomogram based on the influencing factors examined with LASSO showed good predictive power, and the AUC was 76.3% (95% CI 73.7-78.9%). Our results suggest that there is a significant linear negative correlation between the copper-to-zinc ratio and CVD in Chinese adults and that it has good predictive value for CVD.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies have highlighted that copper supplementation at 200% of the recommended daily dietary allowance modified vascular contraction and relaxation through increased reactive oxygen species (ROS) and prostaglandin formation, which modified the antioxidant status of middle-aged Wistar rats. METHODS In this study, young (1 month old) male Wistar rats (n/group = 10) received a diet supplemented with 6.45 mg copper/kg (100% of daily recommendation-Group A) for 8 weeks. The experimental group received 12.9 mg copper/kg of diet (200% of the daily recommendation-Group B). RESULTS Experimental supplementation with 200% copper modified the copper concentration in the blood (1.21-fold, p = 0.04), liver (1.15-fold, p = 0.032), and kidneys (1.23-fold, p = 0.045), potentiated the ROS formation in the aortic rings, and enhanced the sensitivity of the aortic rings to the vasodilator acetylcholine. We observed an increased participation of nitric oxide (NO) derived from inducible NO synthase (iNOS) in vascular contraction and a decreased net effect of vasodilator prostanoids derived from cyclooxygenase-2 in vascular relaxation. In rat kidneys, the concentrations of potassium (1.08-fold, p = 0.001) and iron (1.13-fold, p = 0.046) were higher, while, calcium (0.88-fold, p = 0.001) and chromium (0.77-fold, p = 0.005) concentrations were lower. In the rat liver, magnesium (1.06-fold, p = 0.012) was higher. No differences were observed in the concentrations of sodium, zinc, manganese, selenium, cobalt, molybdenum, and vanadium. The antioxidant activity of water- and lipid-soluble compounds; total antioxidant status in the blood; and superoxide dismutase, catalase, and malondialdehyde levels in the heart did not change. CONCLUSIONS In young rats, prolonged supplementation with 200% copper had a lesser effect than anticipated on oxidative stress and vascular reactivity. Detailed data on the status of trace elements and their interactions in patients of different age groups are strongly required for effective nutritional and therapeutic intervention.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Meta-analyses show increased copper (Cu) levels in major depression disorder. However, the association of Cu biomarkers with clinical classification in other mental health disorders has not been fully explored. METHODS To this aim, we compared an extensive panel of Cu biomarkers, composed of Cu, ceruloplasmin (Cp) Cp activity, Cp specific activity, Cu not bound to ceruloplasmin (non-Cp Cu, also known as 'free' copper) in 171 consecutive patients affected by psychiatric disorders and in 61 healthy controls (HC) using MANOVA adjusting for the effect of sex and age, and studied their association with the clinical scale outcomes at psychiatric examination, namely Global Assessment of Functioning, Clinical Global Impression, and Brief Psychiatric Rating Scale. RESULTS individuals with psychiatric disorders were classified as 109 patients affected by mood spectrum disorders (MSD), 20 patients with schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD), and 42 with personality disorders (PD). Cu and non-Cp Cu were increased in psychiatric individuals than in HC, which also differed among the patients stratified per the clinical classification, being higher in the MSD individuals. The analysis stratified for sex revealed that women from the patient group, and specifically from the MSD group, had increased levels of Cu and non-Cp Cu than healthy women, while no difference was revealed in men. A logistic regression model considering the effect of sex and age revealed that non-Cp Cu could explain 26 % increased odds of having MSD per µmol/L unit increase (OR = 1.26; p = 0.0008; 95 % CI 1.099-1.436), that reached 40 % when considering only women. This result was driven by non-Cp Cu that correctly classified 64.1 % MSD (70 % in women) individuals vs. HC in a decision tree model, with values higher than 2.1 µmol/L which could distinguish the majority of MSD patients (86.3 % MSD vs. 13.7 % HC in women). None of the biological variables under study correlated with outcomes of the clinical scales, substances, or alcohol abuse. CONCLUSION Current results suggest mild Cu toxicity in women with MSD, as revealed by a value of non-Cp Cu higher than 2.1 µmol/L, which can be further investigated to assess its potential diagnostic accuracy in bigger and longitudinal cohorts.

Abstract
BACKGROUND It is widely known that sex differences have a significant impact on patients with major depressive disorder (MDD). This study aims to evaluate the sex-related connection between serum trace elements and changes in neurometabolism in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC) of MDD patients. METHODS 109 untreated MDD patients and 59 healthy controls underwent proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) under resting conditions. We measured metabolic ratios in the ACC from both sides. Additionally, venous blood samples were taken from all participants to detect calcium (Ca), phosphorus, magnesium (Mg), copper (Cu), ceruloplasmin (CER), zinc (Zn), and iron (Fe) levels. We performed association and interaction analyses to explore the connections between the disease and gender. RESULTS In individuals with MDD, the Cu/Zn ratio increased, while the levels of Mg, CER, Zn and Fe decreased. Male MDD patients had lower Cu levels, while female patients had an increased Cu/Zn ratio. We observed significant gender differences in Cu, CER and the Cu/Zn ratio in MDD. Male patients showed a reduced N-acetyl aspartate (NAA)/phosphocreatine + creatine (PCr + Cr) ratio in the left ACC. The NAA/PCr + Cr ratio decreased in the right ACC in patients with MDD. In the left ACC of male MDD patients, the Cu/Zn ratio was inversely related to the NAA/PCr + Cr ratio, and Fe levels were negatively associated with the GPC + PC/PCr + Cr ratio. CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight gender-specific changes in Cu homeostasis among male MDD patients. The Cu/Zn ratio and Fe levels in male MDD patients were significantly linked to neurometabolic alterations in the ACC.

Abstract
Various clinical manifestations associated with measurable abnormalities of Zn and Cu in serum and tissue were determined in Cancer-Patients (CP), and therefore, these two metals are drawing more and more attention presently than ever before. Cancer is a disease of uncontrolled-abnormal-cell-division with invasion-potential which was exhibited to occur due to dys-regulation/dys-homeostasis of fundamental-biological-pathways (FBP) including antioxidant-enzyme-defense-system, anti-inflammatory and immune-systems, and DNA-damage-repair-system in the human-body resulting in generation of chronic-oxidative-stress induced DNA-damage and gene-mutations, inflammation and compromised immune-system, tumor-induced increased angiogenesis, and inhibition of apoptosis processes. Zn and Cu were recognized to be the most crucial components of FBP and imbalance in Zn/Cu ratios in CP asserted to generate chronic toxicity in human body through various mechanisms including increased chronic oxidative stress linked compromised DNA integrity and gene mutations due to malfunctioning of DNA damage repair enzymes; increased angiogenesis process due to Zn- and Cu-binding proteins metallothionein and ceruloplasmin-induced enhanced expression of tumor growth factors; and elevation in inflammatory response which was further shown to down/upregulate gene expression of multiple Zn transporter proteins leading to dys-homeostasis of intracellular Zn concentrations, and it was determined to disturb the equilibrium between cell growth and division, proliferation, differentiation, and apoptosis processes which lead to cancer progression. Moreover, Zn was reported to affect matrix metalloproteinase activity and influence immune system cells to respond differently to different cytokines and enhance immune-suppressive effects accelerating the angiogenesis, invasion, and metastasis potential in cancer. Further, the most significant use of serum Cu/Zn ratio was recommended in clinical diagnosis, prognosis, tumor stage, patient survival, and cancer follow-up studies which need further investigations to elucidate and explore their roles in cancer physiology for clinical perspective.

Abstract
Recent years, the rapid advancement of technology has raised concerns. We studied the effects of prenatal exposure to 900 MHz radiofrequency (RF) from mobile phones and the protective effects of linalool on learning and memory, and anxiety in adolescent male and female offspring rats. Pregnant rats were divided into four groups: control, wave, wave + linalool, and linalool. Rats received linalool (25mg/kg) by gavage for 21 days. Irradiation was conducted from day 0 to day 21 of pregnancy. Offsprings underwent behavioral and electrophysiological tests on days 50 and 60 after birth. Exposure to RF during pregnancy caused anxiety-like behavior in the EPM test and impairment of learning and memory in the Morris water maze and shuttle box tests. Electrophysiological properties and synaptic plasticity of the dorsal hippocampal CA3-CA1 synapse showed a decrease in fEPSP amplitude and slope. The trace element levels in both male and female offspring were consistent across all groups compared to their respective controls. In the hippocampus tissue, the levels of Fe, Cu, and Mn, as well as the Cu/Zn ratio, were significantly higher in the exposed groups (wave groups) compared to their controls. Moreover, Zn levels were significantly lower in the hippocampus tissue of the exposed groups. Linalool administration mitigated the excessive increase in Fe, Cu, Mn, and Cu/Zn ratio and normalized the disrupted levels of trace elements, except for Zn levels in both male and female offspring. Sex differences were observed in the EPM and shuttle box tests, females were more sensitive than males. In summary, our study demonstrates that prenatal exposure to mobile phone radiation induces stress-like behaviors, disrupts learning and memory, alters hippocampal electrophysiological properties and trace element balance in offspring. Treatment with linalool mitigates these deleterious effects, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic intervention. These findings contribute to our understanding of the impact of prenatal environmental exposures on neurodevelopment and offer insights into potential strategies for neuroprotection.

Abstract
Pathogenic mutations in BRCA1 (BReast CAncer gene 1) confer high risks of both breast (up to 70%) and ovarian (up to 40%) cancers. Zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) are essential for various physiological functions, including antioxidant reactions. Their balance, reflected in the Zn/Cu ratio, plays a crucial role in maintaining redox homeostasis, which is vital for cancer prevention. This study examines the antioxidant properties of Zn and Cu, specifically focusing on the blood Zn/Cu ratio as a potential marker for cancer risk among BRCA1 mutation carriers. The study cohort consisted of 989 initially unaffected women, followed up for 7.5 years. Blood samples were analyzed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Although individual Zn and Cu levels did not significantly correlate with overall cancer risk, those women with a Zn/Cu ratio above 6.38 experienced a significantly lower cancer risk than women with a ratio below this cut-off point. This suggests that the Zn/Cu ratio may be a valuable biomarker for cancer prevention in this high-risk group. Given the increased cancer risk in BRCA1 mutation carriers, optimizing Zn and Cu levels through dietary and active interventions could provide a preventive strategy.

Abstract
Aging is associated with a decline in physiological functions and an increased risk of age-related diseases, emphasizing the importance of identifying dietary strategies for healthy aging. Minerals play a crucial role in maintaining optimal health during aging, making them relevant targets for investigation. Therefore, we aimed to analyze the effect of different dietary pattern on mineral status in the elderly. We included 502 individuals aged 50-80 years in a 36-month randomized controlled trial (RCT) (NutriAct study). This article focuses on the results within the two-year intervention period. NutriAct is not a mineral-modulating-targeted intervention study, rather examining nutrition in the context of healthy aging in general. However, mineral status might be affected in an incidental manner. Participants were assigned to either NutriAct dietary pattern (proportionate intake of total energy consumption (%E) of 35-45 %E carbohydrates, 35-40 %E fats, and 15-25 %E protein) or the German Nutrition Society (DGE) dietary pattern (proportionate intake of total energy consumption (%E) of 55 %E carbohydrates, 30 %E fats, and 15 %E protein), differing in the composition of macronutrients. Data from 368 participants regarding dietary intake (energy, calcium, magnesium, iron, and zinc) and serum mineral concentrations of calcium, magnesium, iron, copper, zinc, selenium, iodine, and manganese, free zinc, and selenoprotein P were analyzed at baseline, as well as after 12 and 24 months to gain comprehensive insight into the characteristics of the mineral status. Additionally, inflammatory status - sensitive to changes in mineral status - was assessed by measurement of C-reactive protein and interleukin-6. At baseline, inadequate dietary mineral intake and low serum concentrations of zinc and selenium were observed in both dietary patterns. Throughout two years, serum zinc concentrations decreased, while an increase of serum selenium, manganese and magnesium concentrations was observable, likely influenced by both dietary interventions. No significant changes were observed for serum calcium, iron, copper, or iodine concentrations. In conclusion, long-term dietary interventions can influence serum mineral concentrations in a middle-aged population. Our findings provide valuable insights into the associations between dietary habits, mineral status, and disease, contributing to dietary strategies for healthy aging.

Abstract
Trace elements, through their interaction with biomolecules, can play an important role in the pathophysiology of bipolar disorder and protect against oxidative stress effects. The purpose of this study is to examine plasma concentration levels of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) of Algerian patients, diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and to compare these levels with those of healthy controls. The Cu/Zn ratio was calculated to explore a possible correlation between these elements and lipid peroxidation in the study groups. A total of 33 patients diagnosed with bipolar disorder and 38 healthy subjects participated in this study. Plasma copper and zinc concentrations were measured using a polarographic analyzer. The marker of plasma lipid peroxidation (Malondialdehyde: MDA) was determined by UV spectrophotometry. Plasma Cu concentrations were higher in patients compared to controls (p < 0.05), while the Zn level was significantly lower. Consequently, the Cu/Zn ratio was significantly different between patients and controls. Regarding MDA, no significant difference was noticed between the two study groups. However, in patients, a negative correlation was found between MDA and Cu/Zn ratio (r= -0.38, p= 0.027). These results suggested that an elevated Cu/Zn ratio is associated with attenuated lipid peroxidation in our bipolar patients.

Abstract
Essential trace elements are micronutrients whose deficiency has been associated with altered fertility and/or adverse pregnancy outcomes, while surplus may be toxic. The concentrations of eight essential trace elements were measured using inductively coupled mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) and assessed with respect to clinical in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes in a population of 51 women undergoing IVF with intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), pre-implantation genetic screening for aneuploidy (PGT-A), and single frozen euploid embryo transfer (SET/FET). Specifically, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), molybdenum, selenium, lithium, iron, chromium, and manganese were quantified in follicular fluid and whole blood collected the day of vaginal oocyte retrieval (VOR) and in urine collected the day of VOR and embryo transfer. We found that the whole blood Cu/Zn ratio was significantly associated with superior responses to ovarian stimulation. Conversely, the whole blood zinc and selenium concentrations were significantly associated with poor ovarian response outcomes. Higher levels of whole blood zinc and selenium, urinary selenium, lithium, and iron had significant negative associations with embryologic outcomes following IVF. Regarding clinical IVF outcomes, higher urinary molybdenum concentrations the day of VOR were associated with significantly lower odds of implantation and live birth, while higher urinary Cu/Mo ratios on the day of VOR were associated with significantly higher odds of implantation, clinical pregnancy, and live birth. Our results suggest that essential trace element levels may directly influence the IVF outcomes of Spanish patients, with selenium and molybdenum exerting negative effects and copper-related ratios exerting positive effects. Additional studies are warranted to confirm these relationships in other human populations.

Abstract
Trace elements are cofactors in various enzymes in the antioxidant defense and cell homeostasis required in the tissue during inflammation. In acute kidney injury induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS), renal cells are affected by cytotoxicity. Renal evacuation and gastrointestinal absorption rates are important in regulating plasma levels of trace elements. Simvastatin is a widely used anti-lipidemic drug with known anti-inflammatory effects. This study aimed to examine the effect of simvastatin on trace elements and electrolyte levels in kidney tissue in rats with LPS-induced sepsis. Adult male Wistar albino rats were divided into four groups: control, LPS (20 mg/kg, i.p., single dose), simvastatin (20 mg/kg, o.p., 5 days), and LPS + Simvastatin (LPS + Sim). Sodium, potassium, calcium, magnesium, selenium, zinc, copper, and histological structural changes were examined in kidney tissue samples 4 h after LPS execution. The inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy technique (ICP-OES) was used to determine the tissue trace element levels. In rats with sepsis-induced LPS, selenium, calcium, sodium, and magnesium levels significantly decreased while copper, potassium, and zinc levels significantly increased compared to other experimental groups. In sepsis treated with the simvastatin (LPS + Simvastatin) group, trace elements and electrolyte levels are like the control groups, apart from selenium levels. Selenium levels were significantly decreased in the LPS + Simvastatin group compared to the controls. As a result of examining the kidney tissues under a light microscope, simvastatin improved tissue damage caused by LPS-induced acute kidney injury. LPS-induced renal injury and simvastatin caused significant changes in the oxidant/antioxidant system. In septic rats, simvastatin was shown to balance some trace element levels, and it may improve damage in the kidney tissue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The essential trace element zinc is important in stabilizing pancreatic insulin secretion. Zinc not only influences the synthesis of insulin but also affects its activity. Insulin not only exerts a hypoglycemic effect but also regulates glucose and lipid metabolisms in insulin target organs. In this study, we aimed to determine changes to pancreatic β cells and insulin secretion induced by different zinc concentrations and to evaluate the effect of zinc deficiency on glucose intolerance, insulin resistance, and insulin target organs via changing insulin levels. METHODS We set up two experimental trials. In the first trial, male Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were divided into three groups. Group one (ZnC) received a standard diet, group two (ZnF) was given a zinc-free diet, and group three (ZnFC) was initially fed a zinc-free diet followed by a reversion to the standard diet. After sacrifice, we observed changes in blood parameters, including insulin, and examined alterations in pancreatic tissue using immunostaining, with focus on the localization of pancreatic β-cells. In the second trial, male SD rats were split into two groups, with one receiving a standard diet and the other a zinc-free diet. Oral glucose tolerance and insulin tolerance tests were then performed. After sacrifice, we evaluated changes in lipid and glucose metabolism within insulin target organs using quantitative polymerase chain reaction. RESULTS In the first trial, blood insulin levels and the area of insulin-positive staining in pancreatic β-cells decreased in the ZnF compared to the ZnC group. The ZnFC group did not show recovery in either blood insulin levels or the area of insulin-positive staining in pancreatic β-cells. In the second trial, no differences were observed in glucose tolerance or insulin resistance between the ZnC and ZnF groups. However, changes in the expression of insulin target genes were noted in the liver and adipose tissue in the ZnF group. CONCLUSION We reveal that dietary zinc concentrations not only affect the concentration of insulin in the blood but also impact the localization of pancreatic β-cells involved in insulin production. Furthermore, our results suggest that changes in blood insulin levels, induced by different zinc concentrations, could cause metabolic alterations in insulin target organs such as the liver and adipose tissue. This study sheds more light on the role of zinc in insulin-regulated metabolic diseases.

Abstract
Pneumoconiosis is one of the most serious occupational diseases worldwide. Silicosis due to prolonged inhalation of free silica dust during occupational activities is one of the main types. Cuproptosis is a newly discovered mode of programmed cell death characterized by the accumulation of free copper in the cell, which ultimately leads to cell death. Increased copper in the serum of silicosis patients, suggests that the development of silicosis is accompanied by changes in copper metabolism, but whether cuproptosis is involved in the progression of silicosis is actually to be determined. To test this hypothesis, we screened the genetic changes in patients with idiopathic fibrosis by bioinformatics methods and predicted and functionally annotated the cuproptosis-related genes among them. Subsequently, we established a mouse silicosis model and detected the concentration of copper ions and the activity of ceruloplasmin (CP) in serum, as well as changes of the concentration of copper and cuproptosis related genes in mouse lung tissues. We identified 9 cuproptosis-related genes among the differential genes in patients with IPF at different times and the tissue-specific expression levels of ferredoxin 1 (FDX1) and Lipoyl synthase (LIAS) proteins. Furthermore, serum CP activity and copper ion levels in silicosis mice were elevated on days 7th and 56th after silica exposure. The expression of CP in mouse lung tissue elevated at all stages after silica exposure. The mRNA level of FDX1 decreased on days 7th and 56th, and the protein level remained in accordance with the mRNA level on day 56th. LIAS and Dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase (DLD) levels were downregulated at all times after silica exposure. In addition, Heatshockprotein70 (HSP70) expression was increased on day 56. In brief, our results demonstrate that there may be cellular cuproptosis during the development of experimental silicosis in mice and show synchronization with enhanced copper loading in mice.

Abstract
To assess the association between serum copper/zinc ratio (CZR) and overweight/obesity in children. Sociodemographic and clinical data of children aged 8-18 years old were extracted from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database in this cross-sectional study. These associations were explored using weighted univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses with the odds ratios (ORs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). High serum CZR level was related to higher odds of overweight (OR = 1.74), obesity (OR = 5.26), and central obesity (OR = 2.99). Subgroup analyses showed that high serum CZR levels were associated with high odds of overweight in children aged ≥ 12 years old (OR = 2.19) and females (OR = 2.02), while the increased odds of obesity and central obesity were found in children aged ≥ 12 years old and both male and female. Elevated serum CZR level was linked to high odds of childhood overweight, obesity, and central obesity, and this relationship was also found in children with different age and gender.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Common colds are among the top reasons children miss school and adults miss work. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that there are millions of cases of the common cold in the United States each year. The essential trace elements zinc and copper have immunomodulatory functions, and zinc has been reported to reduce the general risk of infection, whereas the copper-to-zinc ratio has been associated with an increased risk of incident infections in middle-aged men. Studies involving these two trace elements are generally scarce and were often limited to men. MATERIAL AND METHODS We used data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys (NHANES) to examine potential associations between head or chest cold events and serum levels of copper and zinc in n = 2795 NHANES participants enrolled between 2011 and 2016. RESULTS Comparing participants with and without an event of head or chest cold in the last 30 days, no significant differences were found in the serum levels of both trace elements. Notably, copper levels tended to be slightly higher in participants with a recent infection (121.56 (2.69) µg/dl) as compared to participants without infection (117.755 (1.04) µg/dl; p = 0.119). In multivariate logistic regression models adjusting for confounders, copper levels were significantly associated with increased odds for a previous head/chest cold (OR: 1.93 (CI: 1.07-3.47), p = 0.028). Notably, no significant associations were found for zinc and the copper-to-zinc ratio. CONCLUSIONS Elevated copper levels were associated with head and chest cold events in the past 30 days. Whether elevated copper levels reflect a pro-inflammatory infection-predisposing status or whether they were elevated subsequent to the infectious event in some individuals in the sense of a reversed causality remains subject to future research.

Abstract
This study explores age- and time-dependent variations in postprandial micronutrient absorption after a micronutrient-rich intervention meal within the Biomiel (bioavailability of micronutrients in elderly) study. Comprising 43 healthy participants, the study compares young (n = 21; mean age 26.90 years) and old (n = 22; mean age 66.77 years) men and women, analyzing baseline concentrations and six-hour postprandial dynamics of iron (Fe), copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), iodine (I), free zinc (fZn), vitamin C, retinol, lycopene, β-carotene, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol, along with 25(OH) vitamin D (quantified only at baseline). Methodologically, quantifications in serum or plasma were performed at baseline and also at 90, 180, 270, and 360 min postprandially. Results reveal higher baseline serum Zn and plasma lycopene concentrations in the young group, whereas Cu, Se, Cu/Zn ratio, 25(OH) vitamin D, α-tocopherol, and γ-tocopherol were higher in old participants. Postprandial variability of Zn, vitamin C, and lycopene showed a strong time-dependency. Age-related differences in postprandial metabolism were observed for Se, Cu, and I. Nevertheless, most of the variance was explained by individuality. Despite some limitations, this study provides insights into postprandial micronutrient metabolism (in serum/plasma), emphasizing the need for further research for a comprehensive understanding of this complex field. Our discoveries offer valuable insights for designing targeted interventions to address and mitigate micronutrient deficiencies in older adults, fostering optimal health and well-being across the lifespan.

Abstract
Cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Dietary intake, particularly zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) has been strongly associated with CVD. These trace elements play a crucial role in human enzyme activity, suppressing inflammation, catalyzing lipid metabolism enzymes, reducing oxidative stress, and regulating glucose metabolism. However, imbalances in these elements are linked to cardiovascular disturbances. Thus, this study aimed to investigate the association between circulating levels of Zn, Cu, and Zn/Cu ratio with CVD risk factors in the Qatari population. Bivariate logistic regression, adjusted for age, nationality, gender, and education was performed to examine the impact of Zn, Cu, and Zn/Cu ratio (as independent variables) on major CVD risk markers (as dependent variables). Participants in the highest Zn tertiles (T2 and T3) were at greater odds ratio (OR) of unfavorable metabolic functions such as elevated HbA1C [OR = 2.5, p = 0.015 (T2) and OR = 3.2, p = 0.002 (T3)], triglycerides [OR = 2.17, p = 0.015 (T2), and TyG index [OR = 2.21, p = 0.004 (T2), and OR = 2.67, p < 0.001 (T3)] compared to T1. Conversely, they had significantly lower ORs for prolonged prothrombin time [OR = 0.37, p = 0.001 (T3)]. Higher levels of Cu (T2 and T3) had higher OR for elevated HDL-C levels [OR = 1.69, p = 0.046 (T2), and OR = 2.27, p = 0.002 (T3)] and lower OR for elevated levels of triglycerides (OR = 0.4, p = 0.009, T3), diastolic blood pressure [OR = 0.41, p = 0.024 (T2), and OR = 0.47, p = 0.049 (T3)], and creatinine kinase (OR = 0.27, p = 0.014, T3) compared to T1. Higher levels of Cu (T2 and T3) were associated with a higher risk for elevated fibrinogen levels [OR = 3.1, p = 0.035 (T2), and OR = 5.04, p = 0.002 (T3)]. Additionally, higher Zn/Cu ratio (T2 and T3) were associated with lower ORs for elevated fibrinogen levels [OR = 0.3, p = 0.005 (T2), and OR = 0.27, p = 0.005 (T3)] compared to T1, indicating a lower risk of developing CVD. The study reveals a link between Zn, Cu, and the Zn/Cu ratio and cardiovascular disease risk. A higher Zn/Cu ratio may protect against CVD, while elevated Cu levels are linked to obesity, fibrinogen levels, and HbA1C. Maintaining optimal levels of these trace elements, either through diet or supplementation, may help reduce CVD risk.

Abstract
Copper is essential for various biological processes. However, excess copper has several adverse health effects. The effects of serum copper on muscle mass are poorly understood. This study aimed to investigate the association between serum copper levels and muscle mass in the US population. We utilized National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) data between 2011 and 2016 for analysis. Data on serum copper, muscle mass (measured using the appendicular skeletal muscle mass index (ASMI)), and covariates were extracted and analyzed. Weighted multivariate linear regression analyses and smooth curve fittings were performed to investigate the association between serum copper levels and ASMI. Subgroup analyses stratified according to age and sex were performed. In the presence of nonlinearity, threshold effect analysis was performed using a two-piecewise linear regression model. A total of 3860 participants were included in the final analysis. Serum copper levels were negatively associated with ASMI in the fully adjusted model. Furthermore, by comparing participants in the highest and lowest tertiles of serum copper levels, we found that the ASMI decreased by 0.292 kg/m2. In the sex-stratified subgroup analysis, we observed an inverse association between serum copper levels and the ASMI in both men and women. When stratified by age, the association remained significant among participants < 40 years of age, but not among those ≥ 40 years old. Smooth curve fitting revealed a nonlinear relationship between serum copper and ASMI, with an inflection point identified at 150.6 μg/dL. Our study revealed an inverse relationship between serum copper levels and muscle mass. This finding improves the current knowledge on the impact of serum copper on muscle loss and highlights the importance of serum copper homeostasis in muscle health.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Dried blood spot (DBS) technology is valuable in providing simple means of storing blood samples from wildlife with small blood volumes. Methods designed for heavy metal analysis on DBS become more useful if extended to elements of nutritional significance. PURPOSE (1) Development of procedures for measuring Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se and Mo in DBS; (2) use the designed methods in health assessments of Galápagos land iguanas (Conolophus species). PROCEDURES Elements were measured by inductively coupled plasma/mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) following acid digestion of whole blood or DBS from the same animal for direct comparison. Study animals comprised free-ranging iguanas from separate islands in the Galápagos archipelago. MAIN FINDINGS DBS spikes (Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se and Mo) demonstrated accuracy to ∼100 ppb; reporting limits were set there except for Fe and Zn which were set at 1000 ppb. Plasma samples - generally preferable for nutritional element diagnostics - were submitted from Galápagos land iguanas along with DBS as part of a large-scale health assessment. In plasma versus DBS concentration comparisons, Fe, Cu, Se and Mn correlated well with R^2 values of 0.799, 0.818, 0.896 and 0.899, respectively, and slopes ranging 0.88 - 1.3. Co and Zn showed greater scatter. Mo had insufficient points above its reporting limit and offered advantages for toxicity assessments. Bland-Altman diagrams showed flat scatter between 2x standard deviation boundaries with no undue trends except for Mn which had few points above its reporting limit. Bias, defined as the average difference [DBS - plasma] divided by the average value, was relatively low throughout, with values of - 19.3 % (Fe), - 48.7 % (Co), - 19.6 % (Cu), - 6.9 % (Zn), - 21.4 % (Se) and + 40.7 % (Mn). Normal distribution assessment of iguana Cu, Zn, Se and Fe plasma values showed unanticipated divergences between two species. CONCLUSIONS The DBS approach for nutritional element analysis offers a suitable methodology for determining crucial elements Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, Se, and Mo in veterinary samples. Analyses of samples from Conolophus species revealed interesting divergences particularly for Cu, Zn, Se and Fe, elements generally associated with defense against oxidative stress.

Abstract
Dysregulated metal homeostasis is associated with many pathological conditions, including arthritic diseases. Osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are the two most prevalent disorders that damage the joints and lead to cartilage and bone destruction. Recent studies show that the levels of zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) are generally altered in the serum of arthritis patients. Therefore, metal dyshomeostasis may reflect the contribution of these trace elements to the disease's pathogenesis and manifestations, suggesting their potential for prognosis and treatment. Carnosine (Car) also emerged as a biomarker in arthritis and exerts protective and osteogenic effects in arthritic joints. Notably, its zinc(II) complex, polaprezinc, has been recently proposed as a drug-repurposing candidate for bone fracture healing. On these bases, this review article aims to provide an overview of the beneficial roles of Cu and Zn in bone and cartilage health and their potential application in tissue engineering. The effects of Car and polaprezinc in promoting cartilage and bone regeneration are also discussed. We hypothesize that polaprezinc could exchange Zn for Cu, present in the culture media, due to its higher sequestering ability towards Cu. However, future studies should unveil the potential contribution of Cu in the beneficial effects of polaprezinc.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The aim of this study was to explore the association between serum copper-zinc (Cu-Zn) ratio and the risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents. METHODS This cross-sectional study collected the data of 1695 participants who aged 6-17 years with follow-up data on respiratory tract infection in 2011-2012, 2013-2014 and 2015-2016 cycles from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) database. Univariate logistic regression analysis was applied to explore the covariates. Each covariate was adjusted in multivariate logistic regression analysis to explore the correlation between serum Cu-Zn ratio and respiratory tract infection. Subgroup analysis was performed to stratify the data according to age, gender and BMI. Restricted cubic spline (RCS) curve was plotted to identify the association between serum Cu-Zn ratio and respiratory tract infection. RESULTS The results of RCS curve depicted that the risk of respiratory tract infection was increased as the elevation of the serum Cu-Zn ratio. After adjusting for confounders, risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents was elevated with the increase of serum copper-zinc ratio (OR = 1.38, 95%CI: 1.19-1.60). Compared with people with serum copper-zinc ratio <1.25, subjects who had serum copper-zinc ratio >1.52 was associated with increased risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents (OR = 1.88, 95%CI: 1.19-2.98). Subgroup analysis demonstrated that the risk of respiratory tract infection was elevated as the increase of serum copper-zinc ratio in participants <12 years (OR = 1.65, 95%CI: 1.28-2.12), ≥12 years (OR = 1.27, 95%CI: 1.03-1.57), males (OR = 1.63, 95%CI: 1.29-2.06), females (OR = 1.26, 95%CI: 1.01-1.57), underweight and normal (OR = 1.35, 95%CI: 1.11-1.65), and overweight and obese participants (OR = 1.44, 95%CI: 1.15-1.80). CONCLUSION Higher serum Cu-Zn ratio was associated with increased risk of respiratory tract infection in children and adolescents, which suggests the importance of Zn supplement and the balance of serum Cu-Zn ratio in children and adolescents.

Abstract
Sufficient mineral supply is vital not only for the innate immune system but also for the components of the adaptive immune defense, which encompass defense mechanisms against pathogens and the delicate balance of pro- and anti-inflammatory regulation in the long term. Generally, a well-balanced diet is capable of providing the necessary minerals to support the immune system. Nevertheless, specific vulnerable populations should be cautious about obtaining adequate amounts of minerals such as magnesium, zinc, copper, iron, and selenium. Inadequate levels of these minerals can temporarily impair immune competence and disrupt the long-term regulation of systemic inflammation. Therefore, comprehending the mechanisms and sources of these minerals is crucial. In exceptional circumstances, mineral deficiencies may necessitate supplementation; however, excessive intake of supplements can have adverse effects on the immune system and should be avoided. Consequently, any supplementation should be approved by medical professionals and administered in recommended doses. This review emphasizes the crucial significance of minerals in promoting optimal functioning of the immune system. It investigates the indispensable minerals required for immune system function and the regulation of inflammation. Moreover, it delves into the significance of maintaining an optimized intake of minerals from a nutritional standpoint.

Association of Plasma Zinc and Copper with Body Composition, Lipids and Inflammation in a Cross-Sectional General Population Sample from Germany. Nutrients 2023; 15:4460. Abstract
We aimed to relate circulating plasma zinc and copper to a broad spectrum of adiposity-related traits in a cross-sectional Northern German study (n = 841, 42% female, age: 61 ± 12 years). Zinc and copper were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. Subcutaneous (SAT) and visceral (VAT) adipose tissue and liver fat were derived from 534 and 538 participants, respectively, via magnet resonance imaging. Associations were assessed using multivariable-adjusted linear regression analysis. An increase per one standard deviation (SD) in zinc was associated with direct linear increases in body mass index (BMI) (1.17%; 95% confidence interval (95%CI) 0.15-2.20%), waist circumference (0.85%; 95%CI 0.04-1.67%) and waist-to-hip ratio (0.64%; 95%CI 0.18-1.09%). A 1-SD increment in copper was directly associated with BMI (1.64%; 0.41-2.88%) and waist circumference (1.22%; 95%CI 0.25-2.20%) but not waist-to-hip ratio. Independent of fat intake, zinc displayed associations with VAT (5.73%; 95%CI 2.04-9.56%) and with liver fat (3.84%; 95%CI 1.49-6.25%), the latter association being also independent of BMI. Copper was directly associated with SAT (4.64%; 95%CI 0.31-9.15%) before accounting for BMI, but showed no association with VAT or liver fat. Observed associations suggest a possible relevance of zinc and copper to adiposity. Particularly zinc displayed associations with traits of abdominal adiposity and liver fat.

Abstract
A trace element, known as a minor element, is a chemical element whose concentration is very low. They are divided into essential and non-essential classes. Numerous physiological and metabolic processes in both plants and animals require essential trace elements. These essential trace elements are so directly related to the metabolic and physiologic processes of the organism that either their excess or deficiency can result in severe bodily malfunction or, in the worst situations, death. Elements can be found in nature in various forms and are essential for the body to carry out its varied functions. Trace elements are crucial for biological, chemical, and molecular cell activity. Nutritional deficits can lead to weakened immunity, increased susceptibility to oral and systemic infections, delayed physical and mental development, and lower productivity. Trace element enzymes are involved in many biological and chemical processes. These compounds act as co-factors for a number of enzymes and serve as centers for stabilizing the structures of proteins and enzymes, allowing them to mediate crucial biological processes. Some trace elements control vital biological processes by attaching to molecules on the cell membrane's receptor site or altering the structure of the membrane to prevent specific molecules from entering the cell. Some trace elements are engaged in redox reactions. Trace elements have two purposes. They are required for the regular stability of cellular structures, but when lacking, they might activate alternate routes and induce disorders. Therefore, thoroughly understanding these trace elements is essential for maintaining optimal health and preventing disease.

Abstract
We systematically analyzed and attempted to discuss the possibility that deficiencies of zinc or selenium were associated with the incidence and severity of COVID-19. We searched for published and unpublished articles in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science and Cochrane up to 9 February 2023. And we selected healthy individuals, mild/severe, and even deceased COVID-19 patients to analyze their serum data. Data related to 2319 patients from 20 studies were analyzed. In the mild/severe group, zinc deficiency was associated with the degree of severe disease (SMD = 0.50, 95% CI 0.32-0.68, I2 = 50.5%) and we got an Egger's test of p = 0.784; but selenium deficiency was not associated with the degree of severe disease (SMD = - 0.03, 95% CI - 0.98-0.93, I2 = 96.7%). In the surviving/death group, zinc deficiency was not associated with mortality of COVID-19 (SMD = 1.66, 95%CI - 1.42-4.47), nor was selenium (SMD = - 0.16, 95%CI - 1.33-1.01). In the risk group, zinc deficiency was positively associated with the prevalence of COVID-19 (SMD = 1.21, 95% CI 0.96-1.46, I2 = 54.3%) and selenium deficiency was also positively associated with the prevalence of it (SMD = 1.16, 95% CI 0.71-1.61, I2 = 58.3%). Currently, serum zinc and selenium deficiencies increase the incidence of COVID-19 and zinc deficiency exacerbates the disease; however, neither zinc nor selenium was associated with mortality in patients with COVID-19. Nevertheless, our conclusions may change when new clinical studies are published.

Abstract
The histone H3-H4 tetramer is a copper reductase enzyme, facilitating the production of cuprous (Cu1+) ions for distribution to copper-dependent enzymes. It was, however, unknown if this enzymatic activity occurred within nucleosomes. To investigate this, we obtained native nucleosomes from Saccharomyces cerevisiae using micrococcal nuclease digestion of chromatin in isolated nuclei and ion-exchange chromatographic purification. The purified nucleosomal fragments robustly reduced Cu2+ to Cu1+ ions, with the optimal activity dependent on the presence of zinc ions. Mutation of the histone H3 histidine 113 (H3H113) residue at the active site substantially reduced the enzymatic activity of nucleosomes, underscoring the catalytic role of histone H3. Consistently, limiting zinc ions reduced intracellular Cu1+ levels and compromised growth, phenotypes that were mitigated by genetically enhancing the copper reductase activity of histone H3. These results indicate that yeast nucleosomes possess copper reductase activity, suggesting that the fundamental unit of eukaryotic chromatin is an enzyme complex.

Abstract
Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is an autoimmune intestinal disease that includes ulcerative colitis, Crohn's disease, and indeterminate colitis. Patients with IBD are often at risk for malnutrition, including micronutrient deficiencies, due to dietary restrictions and poor intestinal absorption. Micronutrients, including vitamins and minerals, play an important role in the human body's metabolism and maintenance of tissue functions. This article reviews the role of micronutrients in IBD. Micronutrients can affect the occurrence and progression of IBD by regulating immunity, intestinal flora, oxidative stress, intestinal barrier function, and other aspects. Monitoring and timely supplementation of micronutrients are important to delay progression and improve clinical symptoms in IBD patients.

Abstract
Background Sleep disturbance and trace elements imbalance are common features in patients with decompensated cirrhosis, partially sharing similar mechanistic contributors and linking to adverse outcomes. However, there is a paucity of data concerning their relationship. Objectives To investigate the association between serum trace elements levels and sleep quality in the context of cirrhosis. Design Cross-sectional study. Methods We consecutively enrolled 160 patients with decompensated cirrhosis. The sleep disturbance was determined by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI > 5). Serum trace elements [magnesium, calcium, iron, copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), lead, and manganese] was measured by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Association of examined trace elements levels and sleep disturbance was analyzed by multiple linear (global PSQI scores) and multivariate logistic (dichotomized PSQI categories) regression models, respectively. Results In total, 91 patients (56.88%) represented PSQI-defined sleep disturbance, characterized by female preponderance, lower body mass index levels, and higher serum Cu levels (all p < 0.05). Looking into its clinical relevance with debilitating conditions, we showed that Cu/Zn ratio (CZr) is significantly higher in cirrhosis with poor sleep quality (1.77 versus 1.48, p = 0.003). Diagnostic performance analysis indicated CZr > 1.62 to exhibit better discrimination relative to respective Cu. Both multiple linear (β = 0.355, p < 0.001) and multivariate logistic regression (odds ratio = 2.364, p = 0.019) identified higher CZr as an independent risk factor associated with sleep disturbance. Conclusion Our findings implied an association between higher CZr and the presence of sleep disturbance in patients with decompensated cirrhosis.

Abstract
PURPOSE Men and women exhibit different presentations in COVID-19. Changes in zinc finger domains in X chromosome causes disorders of sex development. So, we aimed to evaluate sex distinctions regarding serum zinc in severe COVID-19. METHOD Data from electronic records of severe COVID-19 patients were correlated with serum zinc. Logistic regression investigated predictors and protectors of hypozincemia in men and women. RESULTS We assessed 188 medical records (men = 114, women = 74). Men correlated low zinc with hypertension (cc = 0.303, p < 0.001), diabetes (cc = 0.198, p = 0.031), hemoglobin (cc = -0.258, p = 0.005), and albumin (cc = -0.219, p = 0.027). Low lymphocyte count (cc = 0.315, p = 0.005), C-reactive protein (cc = -0.248, p = 0.037), and enteral nutrition (cc = 0.269, p = 0.016) were correlated with hypozincemia in women. Age correlated with low zinc in men (c = -0.304, p = 0.001) and women (cc = -0.298, p = 0.010). In men, hypertension (OR = 4.905, p = 0.005) and lymphopenia (OR = -0.999, p = 0.019) were low zinc predictors, while lung injury > 50% was a protective factor (OR = -0.280, p = 0.025). Lymphopenia (OR = -0.999, p = 0.005) and difficult weaning from mechanical ventilation (MV) (OR = 4.359, p = 0.036) were predictors of hypozincemia in women. Difficult weaning from MV (OR = 3.012, p = 0.003) and age (OR = 1.038, p = 0.002) were hypozincemia predictors regardless sex. CONCLUSION Hypertension, diabetes, hemoglobin and albumin were correlated with low zinc in men. Lymphopenia, reactive-C protein and enteral nutrition were correlated with low zinc in women. In men, hypertension and low lymphocytes were predictors of hypozincemia. Lymphopenia and difficult weaning from MV were predictors of low zinc in women.

Abstract
The objective of the present study was to review recent epidemiological and clinical data on the association between selected minerals and trace elements and osteoporosis, as well as to discuss the molecular mechanisms underlying these associations. We have performed a search in the PubMed-Medline and Google Scholar databases using the MeSH terms "osteoporosis", "osteogenesis", "osteoblast", "osteoclast", and "osteocyte" in association with the names of particular trace elements and minerals through 21 March 2023. The data demonstrate that physiological and nutritional levels of trace elements and minerals promote osteogenic differentiation through the up-regulation of BMP-2 and Wnt/β-catenin signaling, as well as other pathways. miRNA and epigenetic effects were also involved in the regulation of the osteogenic effects of trace minerals. The antiresorptive effect of trace elements and minerals was associated with the inhibition of osteoclastogenesis. At the same time, the effect of trace elements and minerals on bone health appeared to be dose-dependent with low doses promoting an osteogenic effect, whereas high doses exerted opposite effects which promoted bone resorption and impaired bone formation. Concomitant with the results of the laboratory studies, several clinical trials and epidemiological studies demonstrated that supplementation with Zn, Mg, F, and Sr may improve bone quality, thus inducing antiosteoporotic effects.

Abstract
Alzheimer's' disease (AD) is characterized by the formation of β-amyloid (Aβ) plaques and neurofibrillary tangles of tau protein in the brain. Aβ plaques are formed by the cleavage of the β-amyloid precursor protein (APP). In addition to protein aggregations, the metabolism of the essential mineral element Cu is also altered during the pathogenesis of AD. The concentration and the natural isotopic composition of Cu were investigated in blood plasma and multiple brain regions (brain stem, cerebellum, cortex, and hippocampus) of young (3-4 weeks) and aged (27-30 weeks) APPNL-G-F knock-in mice and wild-type controls to assess potential alterations associated with ageing and AD. Tandem inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS) was used for elemental analysis and multi-collector inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS) for high-precision isotopic analysis. The blood plasma Cu concentration was significantly altered in response to both age- and AD-related effects, whereas the blood plasma Cu isotope ratio was only affected by the development of AD. Changes in the Cu isotopic signature of the cerebellum were significantly correlated with the changes observed in blood plasma. The brain stem showed a significant increase in Cu concentration for both young and aged AD transgenic mice compared with healthy controls, whereas the Cu isotopic signature became lighter as a result of age-related changes. In this work, ICP-MS/MS and MC-ICP-MS provided relevant and complementary information on the potential role of Cu in ageing and AD.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) develops through complex interplay of genetic, microbial, immune, and environmental factors. Trace elements alterations are commonly present in IBD and may have influence on IBD development. Heavy metal pollution is one of the major environmental issues nowadays and IBD incidence is rising in countries where industry starts to develop. Metals are implicated in processes that are connected to IBD pathogenesis. AIM The aim of this study was to investigate toxic and trace element levels in pediatric population of IBD patients both in serum and intestinal mucosa. MATERIALS AND METHODS This prospective study enrolled children newly diagnosed with IBD in University children's hospital in Belgrade. Concentrations of thirteen elements: Al, As, Ca, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, Se and Zn in serum and intestinal mucosa of 17 newly diagnosed children with IBD (10 Crohn's disease (CD) and 7ulcerative colitis (UC)) and 10 controls were assessed using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Intestinal mucosa samples were taken from terminal ileum and six different colon segments (cecum, ascending colon, colon transversum, descending and sigmoid colon and rectum). RESULTS The results demonstrated significant alterations in serum and intestinal mucosa concentrations of investigated elements. Serum iron was significantly decreased in IBD and CD group, compared to controls while serum Cu significantly differed between three investigated groups with highest concentration observed in CD children. Serum manganese was the highest in the UC subgroup. Terminal ileums of IBD patients contained significantly lower amount of Cu, Mg, Mn and Zn with Mn being significantly decreased also in CD patients compared to control. IBD patients' caecum contained significantly less Mg and Cu while colon transversum tissue samples from IBD and Crohn's patients contained significantly more chromium than controls. Moreover, sigmoid colon of IBD patients were poorer in Mg than controls (p < 0.05). Colon Al, As and Cd were significantly reduced in IBD, and UC children compared to control. Correlations of investigated elements in CD and UC groups were different from controls. Biochemical and clinical parameters showed correlation with element concentrations in intestines. CONCLUSION Sera of CD, UC and control children significantly differ in Fe, Cu and Mn levels. Serum manganese was the highest in the UC subgroup creating the most prominent and only significant difference between UC and CD subgroups. Terminal ileum of IBD patients contained significantly lower amount of majority of investigated essential trace elements and toxic elements were significantly reduced in colon of IBD and UC patients. Investigation of macro- and microelement alterations in children and adults has potential to further elucidate IBD pathogenesis.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The essential trace elements copper and zinc, and their ratio (copper/zinc), are important for maintaining redox homeostasis. Previous studies suggest that these elements may impact breast cancer survival. However, no epidemiological study has so far been conducted on the potential association between copper and copper/zinc levels and survival after breast cancer diagnosis. In this study, we aimed to examine the relationship between serum copper, zinc and copper/zinc levels and survival following breast cancer diagnosis. PATIENTS AND METHODS The Sweden Cancerome Analysis Network - Breast Initiative (SCAN-B) is a population-based cohort study including multiple participating hospitals in Sweden. A total of 1998 patients diagnosed with primary invasive breast cancer were followed for approximately nine years. Serum levels of copper and zinc and their ratio at the time of diagnosis was analyzed in relation to breast cancer survival using multivariate Cox regression, yielding hazard ratios (HR) with 95% confidence intervals. RESULTS A higher copper/zinc ratio was associated with lower overall survival after breast cancer diagnosis. Comparing patients with a copper/zinc ratio in quartile 4 vs 1, the crude HR was 2.29 (1.65-3.19) (Ptrend <0.01) and the fully adjusted HR was 1.58 (1.11-2.25) (Ptrend = 0.01). No overall associations were seen between serum copper or zinc levels on their own and survival after breast cancer diagnosis, although a tendency toward lower breast cancer survival was seen for higher copper levels and lower zinc levels. CONCLUSION There is evidence that the serum copper/zinc ratio provides an independent predictive value for overall survival following breast cancer diagnosis.

Abstract
Endometrial diseases, including uterine fibroids, polyps, intrauterine adhesion, endometritis, etc., are the major causes of infertility among women. However, the association between essential trace element status in women and the risk of endometrial disease is limited and unclear. This study aimed to investigate this association using a case-control study design; a total of 302 women patients with endometrial diseases and 302 healthy women were included. Compared to women in the control group, serum selenium (Se) (p = 0.024) and zinc (Zn) (p = 0.017) levels were significantly lower, while copper (Cu) (p = 0.004) and molybdenum (Mo) (p = 0.005) levels were significantly higher among women with endometrial diseases. In addition, compared to women in the first quartile of the copper/zinc (Cu/Zn) ratio value group, the adjusted ORs (95% CIs) of endometrial diseases were 1.50 (1.05, 2.14), 1.68 (1.18, 2.39), and 1.47 (1.02, 2.10), respectively, in the second, third, and fourth quartile of the Cu/Zn ratio value group (p trend = 0.047). In addition, the results from restricted cubic splines showed that the dose-response relationships of serum levels of these essential elements with the risk of endometrial diseases were nonlinear for Se, Cu, and Zn and relatively linear for Mo and Cu/Zn ratio. The present study showed serum levels of Zn and Se among women with endometrial diseases were significantly lower compared to that among healthy women, while serum levels of Cu and Mo were significantly higher, in addition, the serum Cu/Zn ratio value was also significantly and positively associated with the risk of endometrial diseases.

Abstract
Acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a leading cause of mortality and morbidity worldwide. Using a validated and efficient ICP-MS/MS-based workflow, a total of 30 metallomic features were profiled in a study comprising 101 AMI patients and 66 age-matched healthy controls. The metallomic features include 12 essential elements (Ca, Co, Cu, Fe, K, Mg, Mn, Na, P, S, Se, Zn), 8 non-essential/toxic elements (Al, As, Ba, Cd, Cr, Ni, Rb, Sr, U, V), and 10 clinically relevant element-pair product/ratios (Ca/Mg, Ca×P, Cu/Se, Cu/Zn, Fe/Cu, P/Mg, Na/K, Zn/Se). Preliminary linear regression with feature selection confirmed smoking status as a predominant determinant for the non-essential/toxic elements, and revealed potential routes of action. Univariate assessments with adjustments for covariates revealed insights into the ambivalent relationships of Cu, Fe, and P with AMI, while also confirming cardioprotective associations of Se. Also, beyond their roles as risk factors, Cu and Se may be involved in the response mechanism in AMI onset/intervention, as demonstrated via longitudinal data analysis with 2 additional time-points (1-/6-month follow-up). Finally, based on both univariate tests and multivariate classification modelling, potentially more sensitive markers measured as element-pair ratios were identified (e.g., Cu/Se, Fe/Cu). Overall, metallomics-based biomarkers may have utility for AMI prediction.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Some micronutrients have key roles in immune defence, including mucosal defence mechanisms and immunoglobulin production. Altered micronutrient status has been linked with COVID-19 infection and disease severity. We assessed the associations of selected circulating micronutrients with anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgA seropositivity in the Swiss community using early pandemic data. METHODS Case-control study comparing the first PCR-confirmed COVID-19 symptomatic cases in the Vaud Canton (May to June 2020, n = 199) and controls (random population sample, n = 447), seronegative for IgG and IgA. The replication analysis included seropositive (n = 134) and seronegative (n = 152) close contacts from confirmed COVID-19 cases. Anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgA levels against the native trimeric spike protein were measured using the Luminex immunoassay. We measured plasma Zn, Se and Cu concentrations by ICP-MS, and 25-hydroxy-vitamin D3 (25(OH)D3) with LC-MS/MS and explored associations using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS The 932 participants (54.1% women) were aged 48.6 ± 20.2 years (±SD), BMI 25.0 ± 4.7 kg/m2 with median C-Reactive Protein 1 mg/l. In logistic regressions, log2(Zn) plasma levels were negatively associated with IgG seropositivity (OR [95% CI]: 0.196 [0.0831; 0.465], P < 0.001; replication analyses: 0.294 [0.0893; 0.968], P < 0.05). Results were similar for IgA. We found no association of Cu, Se, and 25(OH)D3 with anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG or IgA seropositivity. CONCLUSION Low plasma Zn levels were associated with higher anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG and IgA seropositivity in a Swiss population when the initial viral variant was circulating, and no vaccination available. These results suggest that adequate Zn status may play an important role in protecting the general population against SARS-CoV-2 infection. REGISTRY CORONA IMMUNITAS:: ISRCTN18181860.

Abstract
Previous studies have shown that haemodialysis patients have an increased risk of trace element imbalances. Most studies have determined the concentration of trace elements in serum only, but most trace elements are not uniformly distributed between plasma and blood cells, which justifies separate analysis of the different compartments. In this study, we determined both the serum and whole blood concentration of a wide panel of trace elements (Li, B, Mn, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Se, Rb, Sr, Mo, Cd, Pb) in haemodialysis patients and compared them with those of a control group. Whole blood and serum samples were collected during routine laboratory testing of patients undergoing chronic haemodialysis. For comparison purposes, samples from individuals with normal renal function were also analysed. Statistically significant differences (p < 0.05) were found between the two groups for whole blood concentrations of all analysed elements except Zn (p = 0.347). For serum, the difference between groups was statistically significant for all elements (p < 0.05). This study confirms that patients on haemodialysis tend to present significant trace element imbalances. By determining the concentration of trace elements in both whole blood and serum, it was shown that chronic haemodialysis may affect intra- and extracellular blood compartments differently.

Abstract
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a fatal neurodegenerative disease with unknown aetiology. Metals have been suspected to contribute to ALS pathogenesis since mid-19th century, yet studies on measured metal concentrations in ALS patients have often yielded conflicting results, with large individual variation in measured values. Calculating metal concentration ratios can unveil possible synergistic effects of neurotoxic metals in ALS pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate if ratios of different metal concentrations in cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and blood plasma, respectively, differ between ALS patients and healthy controls. METHODS Cerebrospinal fluid and blood plasma were collected from 17 ALS patients and 10 controls. Samples were analysed for 22 metals by high-resolution inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (HR-ICP-MS), and all possible 231 metal ratios calculated in each body fluid. RESULTS Fifty-three metal ratios were significantly elevated in ALS cases as compared to controls (p < 0.05); five in blood plasma, and 48 in CSF. The finding of fewer elevated ratios in blood plasma may indicate specific transport of metals into the central nervous system. The elevated metal ratios in CSF include Cd/Se (p = 0.031), and 16 ratios with magnesium, such as Mn/Mg (p = 0.005) and Al/Mg (p = 0.014). CONCLUSION Metal ratios may be used as biomarkers in ALS diagnosis and as guidelines for preventive measures.

Abstract
Copper is a vital mineral, and an optimal amount of copper is required to support normal physiologic processes in various systems, including the cardiovascular system. Over the past few decades, copper-induced cell death, named cuproptosis, has become increasingly recognized as an important process mediating the pathogenesis and progression of cardiovascular disease (CVD), including atherosclerosis, stroke, ischemia-reperfusion injury, and heart failure. Therefore, an in-depth understanding of the regulatory mechanisms of cuproptosis in CVD may be useful for improving CVD management. Here, we review the relationship between copper homeostasis and cuproptosis-related pathways in CVD, as well as therapeutic strategies addressing copper-induced cell death in CVD.

Zinc is one of the essential micronutrients in the geriatric population, but the importance of zinc status and dietary zinc intake has been poorly characterized. We aimed to explore the relationships among dietary zinc intake, serum zinc concentrations and multimorbidity in a cross-sectional study of 300 employees of Electric Generating Authority of Thailand aged ≥ 60 years. Comprehensive questionnaires were completed, and clinical and laboratory assessments were performed. Factors associated with low serum zinc concentrations were identified using multivariate multinomial logistic regression analyses. The mean serum zinc level was 80.5 (12.8) µg/dL. After adjustment for baseline characteristics, being female and having been in education for ≤12 years were independent risk factors for the lowest tertile (T1) of serum zinc. After additional adjustment for clinical and biochemical parameters, there was a significant association between depression (Thai Geriatric Depression Scale-15 score > 5) and low serum zinc levels (T1 vs. T3, odds ratio (OR): 2.24; 95% confidence interval (CI): 1.06−4.77). Furthermore, as serum albumin increased, serum zinc concentration substantially increased (T1 vs. T3, OR: 0.01; 95% CI: 0.002−0.070). Therefore, the early detection of risk factors and the further management of depression and low serum albumin may assist physicians in preventing low serum concentrations.

Abstract
PURPOSE No data on predicting the survival of AML patients based on the level of trace elements in the serum have been presented to date. The aims of this prospective cohort study were as follows: (i) to evaluate the serum Cu and Zn levels in people from Northeast China, (ii) to assess the association between the serum Cu level (SCL) and Cu to Zn ratio (SCZR) and clinical and nutrition data, and (iii) to investigate the predictive values of the SCL and SCZR in newly diagnosed de novo AML patients. METHODS A total of 105 newly diagnosed AML patients and 82 healthy controls were recruited. The serum Cu and Zn levels were determined by inductively coupled plasma spectrometry. The associations of SCL and SCZR with the survival of these AML patients were assessed by Cox proportional hazards models. RESULTS Both SCL and SCZR were positively related to the blast percentage of bone marrow and C-reactive protein, negatively related to albumin level and CEBPA double mutation and were significantly associated with worse overall survival and disease-free survival. Meanwhile, patients with higher SCL had worse CTCAE levels, and patients with higher SCZR showed less complete remission during the first course of induction chemotherapy. Moreover, higher SCZR was positively associated with ELN risk stratification, and was negatively associated with haemoglobin level and prognostic nutritional index (PNI). CONCLUSION The SCL and SCZR are associated with long-term survival in patients with newly diagnosed AML undergoing intensive induction and may serve as important predictive biomarkers.

Abstract
PURPOSE Serum copper (Cu), zinc (Zn), and Cu/Zn-ratio have emerged as ageing-related biomarkers. We sought to assess the association between Cu/Zn-ratio and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) risk. METHODS Serum Cu and Zn were measured using atomic absorption spectrometry in 2,503 men aged 42-61 years. RESULTS During a median follow-up of 27.1 years, 210 COPD cases occurred. Serum Cu/Zn-ratio and Cu concentrations were linearly associated with COPD risk, whereas the relationship was curvilinear for Zn and COPD risk. A unit increase in Cu/Zn-ratio was associated with an increased COPD risk in multivariable analysis (hazard ratio, HR 1.81; 95% CI 1.08-3.05). The corresponding adjusted HR (95% CI) was 3.17 (1.40-7.15) for Cu. Compared to the bottom tertile of Zn, the HRs (95% CIs) were 0.68 (0.48-0.97) and 1.01 (0.73-1.41) for the middle and top tertiles of Zn, respectively. CONCLUSIONS Increased serum Cu/Zn-ratio and Cu concentrations were linearly associated with an increased COPD risk in men.

Abstract
Some studies have shown that an imbalance in trace element homeostasis can lead to cognitive dysfunction, but data are lacking. The purpose of this study was to investigate the association between whole blood zinc (Zn), selenium (Se), copper-zinc ratio (Cu/Zn), copper-selenium ratio (Cu/Se), and zinc-selenium ratio (Zn/Se) and mild cognitive impairment (MCI) in elderly Chinese individuals. The study was based on the Elderly Health and Controlled Environmental Factors Cohort in Lu'an, Anhui Province, China, from June to September 2016. The cognitive function of the elderly was determined by the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) and activities of daily living (ADL) scales. The concentrations of Zn, Cu, and Se in the whole blood were measured by inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). Binary logistic regression was used to analyze the associations between trace elements and MCI. A total of 1006 participants with an average age of 71.70 years old were included in this study. Compared with healthy people, MCI patients had higher whole blood Zn levels and lower Se levels, and Cu/Zn, Cu/Se, and Zn/Se were also significantly different. Binary logistic regression analysis showed that Zn, Cu/Se, and Zn/Se exposure in the third tertile was associated with an increased risk of MCI, while Se exposure in the third tertile was associated with a reduced risk of MCI. After adjustment for sex, age, marital status, BMI, and living status, whole blood Zn, Se, Cu/Zn, Cu/Se, and Zn/Se were significantly associated with MCI risk, especially in elderly women.

Abstract
Copper is a fundamental element for the homeostasis of the body. It is the third most abundant essential transition metal in humans. Changes in the concentration of copper in the blood are responsible for numerous diseases affecting various organs, including the heart, brain, kidneys, and liver. Even small copper deficiencies can lead to the development and progression of several pathologies. On the other hand, excessive exposure to copper can cause toxicity in many human organs, leading to various systemic alterations. In the kidney, increased copper concentration in the blood can cause deposition of this element in the kidneys, leading to nephrotoxicity. One of the most interesting aspects of copper balance is its influence on diabetes and the progression of its complications, such as Diabetic Kidney Disease (DKD). Several studies have shown a close relationship between copper serum levels and altered glycemic control. An imbalance of copper can lead to the progression of diabetes-related complications and impaired antioxidant homeostasis. A high Zinc/Copper (Zn/Cu) ratio is associated with improved renal function and reduced risk of poor glycemic control in patients with type two diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Furthermore, the progression of DKD appears to be related to the extent of urinary copper excretion, while regulation of adequate serum copper concentration appears to prevent and treat DKD. The aim of this review is to evaluate the possible role of copper in DKD patients.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES High plasma copper (Cu) and low zinc (Zn) levels have been associated with depression. However, most studies used low sample sizes and a cross-sectional design, and perinatal data are scarce. We investigated the possible association between pregnancy-specific psychological distress and the plasma CuZn ratio using a prospective design. METHODS Pregnancy-specific distress symptoms were assessed at each trimester by means of the Tilburg Pregnancy Distress Scale, negative affect subscale, in 2036 pregnant women. Cu and Zn were assessed at 12 wk of gestation in plasma samples by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Growth mixture modeling determined trajectories of women's pregnancy-specific negative affect (P-NA) symptoms, which were entered in a multiple logistic regression analysis as dependent variable and the CuZn ratio as independent variable. RESULTS Two P-NA symptom classes were found: 1) persistently low (n = 1820) and 2) persistently high (n = 216). A higher CuZn ratio was independently associated with persistently high P-NA symptom scores (odds ratio = 1.52; 95% confidence interval, 1.13-2.04) after adjustment for confounders. A sensitivity analysis was performed excluding all women with high P-NA scores at 12 wk (>1 SD above the mean P-NA score). In the 1719 remaining women, a higher CuZn ratio significantly predicted the development of increasing P-NA symptom scores after adjustment for confounders (odds ratio = 1.40; 95% confidence interval, 1.04-1.95). CONCLUSIONS A higher CuZn plasma ratio is an independent determinant of developing pregnancy-specific distress symptoms throughout pregnancy, suggesting that micronutrients could be used as novel biomarkers for psychological distress research of perinatal mood disorders.

Abstract
Patients undergoing maintenance hemodialysis (MHD) are at risk of an imbalance of copper and zinc homeostasis. We hypothesized that there is an association between the blood copper-zinc (Cu/Zn) ratio and nutritional status in these patients. For this cross-sectional study, blood samples were collected from patients undergoing MHD at Guangzhou Red Cross Hospital in September 2019. Zinc and copper levels were measured using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The seven-point subjective global assessment (SGA), nutritional risk screening 2002 (NRS2002), and geriatric nutritional risk index (GNRI) were used to evaluate the overall nutritional status. We enrolled 144 MHD patients (men:women = 78:66), with an average age of 64.33 ± 13.39 years and a median dialysis vintage of 33.50 (16.25-57.50) months. Patients with a higher blood Cu/Zn ratio had lower levels of hemoglobin, blood zinc, serum prealbumin, albumin, and creatinine as well as low SGA and GNRI scores, but higher modified Charlson comorbidity index score, serum C-reactive protein level, interleukin-6 level, blood copper level, and NRS2002 score (all p < 0.05). After adjustment for confounding factors in multivariable models, a high blood Cu/Zn ratio was independently associated with nutritional risk defined by all nutritional parameters (SGA, NRS2002, and GNRI). Prospective studies with larger sample sizes are warranted to confirm these results.

Abstract
BACKGROUND & AIMS In 2018, the Global Leadership Initiative on Malnutrition (GLIM) released a global standard for evaluating malnutrition. The etiologies of malnutrition in the GLIM criteria includes disease burden/inflammation, but how this view affects nutritional assessment remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the impact of disease burden/inflammation on the proportion of malnourished patients defined by GLIM criteria, and how differences in methods for determining disease burden/inflammation in GLIM criteria affect existing nutritional indices among patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We also investigated factors associated with malnutrition in RA patients. METHODS Data from 135 female RA patients (66.8 ± 12.6 years) were cross-sectionally analyzed. Among the etiologies of malnutrition, disease burden/inflammation was defined as: (1) moderate or higher disease activity score (disease activity score composite of the 28-joint score and erythrocyte sedimentation rate [DAS28-ESR] ≥ 3.2) [DAS-malnutrition (MN)]; (2) elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) ≥0.5 mg/dL (CRP-MN); and (3) presence of RA (RA-MN). In each of the three conditions, nutritional indicators between well-nourished and malnourished groups were compared by analysis of covariance. Factors associated with malnutrition were analyzed with logistic regression analysis. RESULTS The frequencies of malnutrition as defined by DAS-MN, CRP-MN, and RA-MN were 39%, 30%, and 71%, respectively. When malnutrition was defined by the DAS-MN and/or the CRP-MN, grip strength and serum ceruloplasmin, iron, and zinc levels showed significant differences between the well-nourished and malnourished groups (p < 0.05). The use of targeted synthetic or biological disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (ts-/b-DMARD) (OR = 0.29; 95% CI 0.11-0.82), grip strength (OR = 0.83; 95% CI 0.75-0.91), subjective reduction in walking speed (OR = 5.24; 1.85-14.86) were significantly associated with malnutrition as determined by DAS-MN. CONCLUSION Differences in disease burden/inflammation affect nutritional assessments. The number of malnourished patients with RA was negatively associated with the use of ts-/b-DMARDs and high physical function in women.

Abstract
Immunological aging is strongly associated with the observable deleterious effects of human aging. Our understanding of the causes, effects, and therapeutics of aging immune cells has long been considered within the sole purview of immunosenescence. However, it is being progressively realized that immunosenescence may not be the only determinant of immunological aging. The cellular senescence-centric theory of aging proposes a more fundamental and specific role of immune cells in regulating senescent cell (SC) burden in aging tissues that has augmented the notion of senescence immunotherapy. Now, in addition, several emerging studies are suggesting that cellular senescence itself may be prevalent in aging immune cells, and that senescent immune cells exhibiting characteristic markers of cellular senescence, similar to non-leucocyte cells, could be among the key drivers of various facets of physiological aging. The present review integrates the current knowledge related to immunosenescence and cellular senescence in immune cells per se, and aims at providing a cohesive overview of these two phenomena and their significance in immunity and aging. We present evidence and rationalize that understanding the extent and impact of cellular senescence in immune cells vis-à-vis immunosenescence is necessary for truly comprehending the notion of an 'aged immune cell'. In addition, we also discuss the emerging significance of dietary factors such as phytochemicals, probiotic bacteria, fatty acids, and micronutrients as possible modulators of immunosenescence and cellular senescence. Evidence and opportunities related to nutritional bioactive components and immunological aging have been deliberated to augment potential nutrition-oriented immunotherapy during aging.
