Abstract
PURPOSE Dry Eye Disease (DED) is regarded as the most common ocular surface disease worldwide, entailing symptoms that have a major impact on the physical and psychological well-being of DED patients. In this context, the impact of sleep quality on DED has recently attracted attention. Indeed, although little is known about the mechanisms underlying the relationship between sleep and ocular surface diseases, recent evidence suggests that a reciprocal relationship exists between sleep quality and DED. Aim of the study was to investigate such relationship by means of both survey-based and instrumental analysis in a large population. PATIENTS AND METHODS The present cross-sectional study included 1182 DED patients who completed the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI) and the Ocular Surface Disease Index (OSDI) questionnaires. Moreover, tear break-up time (TBUT) and ocular surface staining (OSS) data of included patients were collected by physicians. RESULTS According to the findings of this study, in DED patients, the severity of dry eye symptoms and signs, assessed by OSDI score, TBUT, and ocular surface staining, is associated with more severe insomnia symptoms. Furthermore, higher severity of DED symptoms seems to be associated with the occurrence of nocturnal awakenings rather than with problems in falling asleep. CONCLUSIONS Present work contributes to the understanding of the complex relationship between DED and insomnia by showing that in a large population of DED patients, the more severe the insomnia, the more severe the DED symptoms and signs.

Abstract
Introduction Sleep is associated with psychiatric disorders. However, their causality remains unknown. Methods The study explored the causal relationship between seven sleep parameters (sleep duration, insomnia, sleep apnea, chronotype, daytime dozing, napping during the day, and snoring) and three psychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder (MDD), schizophrenia, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) using two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR). Genome-wide association study (GWAS) summary data for sleep parameters were obtained from the United Kingdom biobank, FinnGen biobank, and EBI databases. MR-Egger, weighted median, inverse-variance weighted (IVW), simple mode, weighted mode, maximum likelihood, penalized weighted median, and IVW(fixed effects) were used to perform the MR analysis. The heterogeneity was detected by Cochran's Q statistic. The horizontal pleiotropy was detected by MR Egger. The sensitivity was investigated by the leave-one-out analysis. Results Insomnia (OR = 2.02, 95%CI = 1.34-3.03, p = 0.001, False-discovery rate (FDR) corrected p-value = 0.011) and napping during the day (OR = 1.81, 95%CI = 1.34-2.44, FDR corrected p-value<0.001) were associated with an increased risk of MDD. Longer sleep duration (OR = 2.20, 95%CI = 1.24-3.90, FDR corrected p-value = 0.049) had an association with the increased risk of schizophrenia, while daytime dozing (OR = 4.44, 95%CI = 1.20-16.41, corrected p-value = 0.088)and napping during the day (OR = 2.11, 95%CI = 1.11-4.02, FDR corrected p-value = 0.088) had a suggestive association with an increased risk of schizophrenia. Longer sleep duration had a suggestive association with a decreased risk of ADHD (OR = 0.66, 95%CI = 0.42-0.93, FDR corrected p-value = 0.088). Conclusion This study provides further evidence for a complex relationship between sleep and psychiatric disorders. Our findings highlight the potential benefits of addressing sleep problems in the prevention of psychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Background Poor sleep quality significantly impacts academic performance in university students. However, inconsistent and inconclusive results were found in a study on sleep among university students in several African nations. Therefore, this study aimed to estimate the pooled prevalence and associated factors of poor sleep quality among university students in Africa. Methods The databases PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane Library, Science Direct, African Journal Online, and Google Scholar were searched to identify articles. A total of 35 primary articles from 11 African countries were assessed and included in this systematic review and meta-analysis. Data were extracted by using a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet and exported to STATA version 14 for analysis. The I2 test was used to assess the statistical heterogeneity. A random effect meta-analysis model was employed with 95% confidence intervals. Funnel plots analysis and Egger regression tests were used to check the presence of publication bias. A subgroup analysis and a sensitivity analysis were done. Results A total of 16,275 study participants from 35 studies were included in this meta-analysis and systematic review. The overall pooled prevalence of poor sleep quality among university students in Africa was 63.31% (95% CI: 56.91-65.71) I2 = 97.2. The subgroup analysis shows that the combined prevalence of poor sleep quality in East, North, West, and South Africa were 61.31 (95% CI: 56.91-65.71), 62.23 (95% CI: 54.07-70.39), 54.43 (95% CI: 47.39-61.48), and 69.59 (95% CI: 50.39-88.80) respectively. Being stressed (AOR= 2.39; 95% CI: 1.63 to 3.51), second academic year (AOR= 3.10; 95% CI: 2.30 to 4.19), use of the electronic device at bedtime (AOR= 3.97 95% CI: 2.38 to 6.61)) and having a comorbid chronic illness (AOR = 2.71; 95% CI: 1.08, 6.82) were factors significantly associated with poor sleep quality. Conclusion This study shows that there is a high prevalence of poor sleep quality among university students in Africa. Being stressed, in the second year, using electronic devices at bedtime, and having chronic illness were factors associated with poor sleep quality. Therefore, addressing contributing factors and implementing routine screenings are essential to reduce the burden of poor sleep quality. Abstract
Sleep deprivation (SD) is a global public health burden, and has a detrimental role in the nervous system. Retina is an important part of the central nervous system; however, whether SD affects retinal structures and functions remains largely unknown. Herein, chronic SD mouse model indicated that loss of sleep for 4 months could result in reductions in the visual functions, but without obvious morphologic changes of the retina. Ultrastructural analysis by transmission electron microscope revealed the deterioration of mitochondria, which was accompanied with the decrease of multiple mitochondrial proteins in the retina. Mechanistically, oxidative stress was provoked by chronic SD, which could be ameliorated after rest, and thus restore retinal homeostasis. Moreover, the supplementation of two antioxidants, α-lipoic acid and N-acetyl-l-cysteine, could reduce retinal reactive oxygen species, repair damaged mitochondria, and, as a result, improve the retinal functions. Overall, this work demonstrated the essential roles of sleep in maintaining the integrity and health of the retina. More importantly, it points towards supplementation of antioxidants as an effective intervention strategy for people experiencing sleep shortages.

Abstract
STUDY OBJECTIVES This study aimed to determine the sleep quality of in-school Nigerian adolescents and its association with their schooling and mental health outcomes. METHODS The study was a descriptive cross-sectional study. It was conducted among adolescents attending public and private secondary schools within the Ife Central Local Government, Osun State, southwestern Nigeria. A multistage sampling technique was used to select study participants. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, 9-item Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), and 7-item General Anxiety Disorder questionnaires were used to determine sleep quality, depression, and anxiety, respectively. RESULTS We studied 448 adolescents aged between 10 and 19 years with a mean age of 15.0 ± 1.8 years. The majority of our respondents (85.0%) had poor sleep quality. More than half of the respondents (55.1%) had insufficient sleep during weekdays, while only 34.8% had insufficient sleep during weekends. The school closing time and school type showed a statistically significant association with sleep quality (P = .039 and .005, respectively). The odds of having poor sleep quality increased by 2-fold among adolescents in private schools when compared with those in public schools (adjusted odds ratio = 1.97, 95% confidence interval = 1.069-3.627). Using multiple linear regression, only depression showed a statistically significant association with sleep quality at 95% confidence interval (CI = 0.073 to 0.219, P < .001), such that for every unit change in depression scores (PHQ-9), there will be a corresponding increase of 0.103 in sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS Sleep quality is poor in adolescents and adversely associated with their mental health. This should also be addressed in the development of appropriate interventions. Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging evidence suggests bidirectional causal relationships between sleep disturbance and psychiatric disorders, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. Understanding the bidirectional causality between sleep traits and brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs) will help elucidate the mechanisms. Although previous studies have identified a range of structural differences in the brains of individuals with sleep disorders, it is still uncertain whether grey matter (GM) volume alterations precede or rather follow from the development of sleep disorders. RESULTS After Bonferroni correction, the forward MR analysis showed that insomnia complaint remained positively associated with the surface area (SA) of medial orbitofrontal cortex (β, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.15-0.37; P = 5.27 × 10-6). In the inverse MR analysis, higher global cortical SA predisposed individuals less prone to suffering insomnia complaint (OR, 0.89; 95%CI, 0.85-0.94; P = 1.51 × 10-5) and short sleep (≤ 6 h; OR, 0.98; 95%CI, 0.97-0.99; P = 1.51 × 10-5), while higher SA in posterior cingulate cortex resulted in a vulnerability to shorter sleep durations (β, - 0.09; 95%CI, - 0.13 to - 0.05; P = 1.21 × 10-5). CONCLUSIONS Sleep habits not only result from but also contribute to alterations in brain structure, which may shed light on the possible mechanisms linking sleep behaviours with neuropsychiatric disorders, and offer new strategies for prevention and intervention in psychiatric disorders and sleep disturbance.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES Sleep problems are common amongst children and adolescents with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The purpose of this study was to investigate sleep problems in children and adolescents attending a specialist ADHD service. METHODS This was a cross-sectional online survey combined with a retrospective chart review, conducted in the ADHD Assessment, Diagnosis, Management, initiation, Research and Education (ADMiRE) service, the first public specialist ADHD service for young people in Ireland. Participants were caregivers of children and adolescents with ADHD attending ADMiRE. Sleep was assessed using The Children's Sleep Habits Questionnaire (CSHQ) and ADHD symptoms were assessed using an abbreviated version of the Swanson, Nolan and Pelham Teacher and Parent Rating Scale (SNAP-IV). Details regarding patient demographics, co-morbidities and medication were collected from patient records. RESULTS Eighty-four percent of young people scored above the clinical cut-off for a sleep disorder. The most frequently reported sleep problems were related to sleep onset and sleep duration, and 64% of respondents met the criteria for two or more sleep problems. ADHD severity was associated with greater sleep problems. Co-morbid physical, neurodevelopmental, and mental health disorders as well as stimulant use were not associated with greater sleep problems. CONCLUSION Sleep problems are very common amongst children and adolescents with ADHD. This study has demonstrated an association between more sleep problems and ADHD severity. These findings highlight the need for both effective ADHD treatment to ensure optional sleep in young people as well as effective interventions for sleep problems to prevent worsening of ADHD symptoms.

Abstract
Background and Objective In our study, we aimed to evaluate the sleep disturbances of patients diagnosed with restless legs syndrome (RLS) regarding their mental health according to the severity of the disease. Materials and Methods The study included 166 patients diagnosed with RLS and 161 healthy controls in the same age interval as patients. Sleep disturbances of patients were defined with the "personal information form" (PIF) prepared by the researchers, while the mental health status of patients was defined with the "Brief Symptom Inventory" (BSI). Results All RLS patients had an increase in BSI subscale points, with a positive correlation to disease severity, and subscale points were significantly higher than the control group (p < 0.05). Those with the "frequent waking" problem had higher BSI subscale points compared to those without the problem (p<0.01 or 0.001). Those with "waking with respiratory distress," "daytime sleepiness," "very early waking," and "sleep disorder" problems had statistically significantly high BSI subscale points for all subscales, apart from hostility, compared to those without these problems (p<0.01 or 0.001). Conclusion It is considered that assessment of sleep disturbances causing disrupted quality of life and mood disorders is beneficial for the treatment of patients with RLS. Our study data appears to be related to the result that sleep disturbances and mental health disruptions might be associated with the disease severity among RLS patients.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Poor sleep quality may elevate cortisol levels and affect prenatal mental health through altered HPA axis functioning. This study aims to examine whether subjective sleep quality during preconception moderates the association between preconception hair cortisol levels and mental health from preconception to pregnancy trimesters. METHODS Women from a prospective cohort study completed the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale (EPDS), and the State-Trait Anxiety Inventory (STAI) questionnaires during preconception (T0) and at each pregnancy trimesters (T1, T2, and T3). We analyzed 266 of these women who conceived and had fully completed measures at preconception for hair cortisol, sleep quality and either EPDS or STAI-state. Changes in EPDS and STAI-state scores were derived (i.e., T1-T0, T2-T0, T3-T0). Johnson-Neyman technique identified PSQI scores with significant moderation of cortisol on mental health. RESULTS After adjusting for potential covariates, there was a significant positive correlation between preconception hair cortisol levels and depressive symptom at the second trimester (rs (144) = 0.22, p = 0.008), but not the first and third trimesters (all ps > 0.05). The positive association between preconception hair cortisol and change in depressive symptoms between third trimester and preconception was significant only among women with poor preconception sleep quality (PSQI ≥ 7). LIMITATIONS Sleep quality and prenatal mood were derived from self-reported questionnaires, which may be more susceptible to bias. CONCLUSIONS The positive association between preconception hair cortisol and change in prenatal depressive symptoms is significant among women who reported poor sleep quality during preconception. Improving preconception sleep quality can potentially mitigate the association between preconception hair cortisol and depressive symptoms during pregnancy.

Abstract
BACKGROUND There is limited consensus regarding the optimal treatment of insomnia. The recent introduction of orexin receptor antagonists (ORA) has increased the available treatment options. However, the prescribing patterns of hypnotics in Japan have not been comprehensively assessed. We performed analyses of a claims database to investigate the real-world use of hypnotics for treating insomnia in Japan. METHODS Data were retrieved for outpatients (aged ≥ 20 to < 75 years old) prescribed ≥ 1 hypnotic for a diagnosis of insomnia between April 1st, 2009 and March 31st, 2020, with ≥ 12 months of continuous enrolment in the JMDC Claims Database. Patients were classified as new or long-term users of hypnotics. Long-term use was defined as prescription of the same mechanism of action (MOA) for ≥ 180 days. We analyzed the trends (2010-2019) and patterns (2018-2019) in hypnotics prescriptions. RESULTS We analyzed data for 130,177 new and 91,215 long-term users (2010-2019). Most new users were prescribed one MOA per year (97.1%-97.9%). In 2010, GABAA-receptor agonists (benzodiazepines [BZD] or z-drugs) were prescribed to 94.0% of new users. Prescriptions for BZD declined from 54.8% of patients in 2010 to 30.5% in 2019, whereas z-drug prescriptions remained stable (~ 40%). Prescriptions for melatonin receptor agonist increased slightly (3.2% to 6.3%). Prescriptions for ORA increased over this time from 0% to 20.2%. Prescriptions for BZD alone among long-term users decreased steadily from 68.3% in 2010 to 49.7% in 2019. Prescriptions for ORA were lower among long-term users (0% in 2010, 4.3% in 2019) relative to new users. Using data from 2018-2019, multiple (≥ 2) MOAs were prescribed to a higher proportion of long-term (18.2%) than new (2.8%) users. The distribution of MOAs according to psychiatric comorbidities, segmented by age or sex, revealed higher proportions of BZD prescriptions in elderly (new and long-term users) and male (new users) patients in all comorbidity segments. CONCLUSION Prescriptions for hypnotics among new and long-term users in Japan showed distinct patterns and trends. Further understanding of the treatment options for insomnia with accumulating evidence for the risk-benefit balance might be beneficial for physicians prescribing hypnotics in real-world settings.

Abstract
Dysregulated sleep is commonly reported in individuals with neuropsychiatric disorders, including schizophrenia (SCZ) and bipolar disorder (BPD). Physiology and pathogenesis of these disorders points to aberrant metabolism, during neurodevelopment and adulthood, of tryptophan via the kynurenine pathway (KP). Kynurenic acid (KYNA), a neuroactive KP metabolite derived from its precursor kynurenine by kynurenine aminotransferase II (KAT II), is increased in the brains of individuals with SCZ and BPD. We hypothesize that elevated KYNA, an inhibitor of glutamatergic and cholinergic neurotransmission, contributes to sleep dysfunction. Employing the embryonic kynurenine (EKyn) paradigm to elevate fetal brain KYNA, we presently examined pharmacological inhibition of KAT II to reduce KYNA in adulthood to improve sleep quality. Pregnant Wistar rats were fed either kynurenine (100 mg/day)(EKyn) or control (ECon) diet from embryonic day (ED) 15 to ED 22. Adult male (N = 24) and female (N = 23) offspring were implanted with devices to record electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) telemetrically for sleep-wake data acquisition. Each subject was treated with either vehicle or PF-04859989 (30 mg/kg, s.c.), an irreversible KAT II inhibitor, at zeitgeber time (ZT) 0 or ZT 12. KAT II inhibitor improved sleep architecture maintaining entrainment of the light-dark cycle; ZT 0 treatment with PF-04859989 induced transient improvements in rapid eye movement (REM) and non-REM (NREM) sleep during the immediate light phase, while the impact of ZT 12 treatment was delayed until the subsequent light phase. PF-04859989 administration at ZT 0 enhanced NREM delta spectral power and reduced activity and body temperature. In conclusion, reducing de novo KYNA production alleviated sleep disturbances and increased sleep quality in EKyn, while also improving sleep outcomes in ECon offspring. Our findings place attention on KAT II inhibition as a novel mechanistic approach to treating disrupted sleep behavior with potential translational implications for patients with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders.

Abstract
Introduction Major depressive disorder (MDD) and obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) are prevalent in the general population. Moreover, early studies found that the two conditions are associated bidirectionally and lead to poor health outcomes. The prevalence of comorbid MDD in OSA patients could be as high as two-thirds. A sedentary lifestyle and psychological stress in the globalisation age may increase the risk of MDD and OSA. Method We reported a case of an MDD patient with OSA as well as discussed the assessment method and also reviewed the treatment of both conditions. We aimed to raise awareness for psychiatrists to differentiate other medical conditions when the symptomatology of MDD is atypical and unresponsive to standard psychiatric treatment. Conclusion Early detection and effective treatment for MDD and OSA are essential to achieve patient outcomes. Furthermore, it can reduce complications from both conditions. Therefore, a comprehensive evaluation should be made to determine the diagnoses when physicians suspect overlapping MDD and OSA.

Abstract
A cross-sectional study based on the community was conducted to explore the association between sleep status and LUTS among middle and old-aged men. Male residents in Zhengzhou aged 40 or older were recruited. Participants received the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index questionnaire and the International Prostate Symptom Score questionnaire to evaluate sleep status and the severity of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), respectively. Logistic regression analyses and linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the relationship between sleep quality and sleep duration and LUTS. A total of 5785 participants were enrolled. Multivariable analyses showed a positive relationship between sleep quality and LUTS (β 0.716, 95% CI 0.647-0.784), and poor sleepers were significantly associated with moderate or severe LUTS (OR 2.486, 95% CI 2.095-2.950). U-shaped dose-response relationship revealed that sleeping less than 5.8 h/day and more than 7.9 h/day was related to moderate or severe LUTS and more than 7.9 h/day of sleep duration was associated with poor voiding and storage symptoms (P for nonlinearity < 0.001). Similar relationship was observed between sleep status and nocturia. It showed a significantly positive relationship between sleep quality and LUTS. U-shaped dose-response relationships between sleep duration and LUTS were observed.

Abstract
Background Insomnia is very common in current society, and patients are often accompanied by a certain degree of anxiety, depression, etc. Recent studies have found that the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis excitement-inhibition state is an important indicator of sleep quality. Wrist-ankle acupuncture (WAA) is safe and effective for insomnia. Based on WAA theory, the acupressure wrist-ankle straps are portable WAA point compression straps that can treat diseases by automatically applying pressure to the treatment location and being operated by patients themselves. We design this trial to evaluate the clinical effect of the acupressure wrist-ankle strap in the treatment of mild insomnia patients with anxiety disorders. Methods/design This trial is a parallel-design, patients-assessor blinded, randomized, sham-controlled. In total, 114 patients diagnosed with mild insomnia and anxiety disorders will be randomly assigned into two groups, the acupressure wrist-ankle strap group or the non-acupressure wrist-ankle strap group; they will receive treatments for eight weeks with five sessions each week. Rating scales, sleep monitors, and laboratory tests will be used to observe the clinical effect. From the perspective of the circadian secretion of peripheral blood-related hormones in the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, the possible mechanism of acupressure wrist-ankle straps for treating insomnia is studied. Discussion The results of this study will confirm the efficacy of acupressure wrist-ankle strap in treating mild insomnia patients with anxiety disorder and whether its mechanism is related to the HPA axis. The acupressure wrist-ankle strap may become a pure physical, no side effect treatment of mild insomnia. Trial registration Chinese Clinical Trial Registry ChiCTR2000039352. Abstract
BACKGROUND Somnambulism, or sleepwalking (SW), is one of the most common forms of arousal parasomnias. It is characterized by different complex motor behaviors leading to unwanted movements in bed or walking during sleep. It can be the consequence of psychological stress, abnormal breathing during sleep, high fever, or drug adverse effects. There is evidence of an association between antipsychotic treatment, including olanzapine, and SW. METHODS We present the case of a patient experiencing treatment-resistant anorexia nervosa whose somnambulism re-exacerbated after the addition of a low dose of olanzapine, following the CARE (CAse REport) Statement and Checklist. We also conducted a systematic review of the literature on olanzapine-induced somnambulism following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. PubMed, PsychINFO, and the Cochrane Library databases were independently reviewed up to January 2021 for articles reporting olanzapine-related somnambulism cases, without language or time restriction. RESULTS We describe a case of somnambulism in a patient initially admitted to our hospital for anorexia nervosa and treated with a low dose of olanzapine. This is the first case of SW induced by olanzapine in eating disorders to be reported. Up-to-date olanzapine-related somnambulism was described in 8 patients experiencing psychiatric disorders (ie, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder). CONCLUSIONS To provide a reliable estimate of incidence and prevalence for olanzapine-related somnambulism, large-scale, pharmacovigilance studies are required, to allow for comparisons of overall clinical characteristics, outcomes, including time to recovery, between different treatment options. Clinician awareness should be enhanced, and attention should be given to such infrequent adverse effects associated with antipsychotics.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Patients with long-term insomnia generally experience anxiety and depression. Traditional sleeping pills and anti-anxiety drugs have certain limitations. Xiao Yao San (XYS), a complementary and alternative therapy, has been widely used to treat insomnia combined with anxiety. This study aims to evaluate the efficacy and safety of XYS in the treatment of insomnia combined with anxiety. METHODS Related literature was retrieved from 8 electronic databases from the establishment time to March 2021. The subjects were diagnosed with insomnia combined with anxiety. We assessed the methodological quality of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) according to the Cochrane Handbook. Data analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.3 software. RESULTS The analysis includes 9 RCTs involving 681 patients. Meta-analysis supported that as an auxiliary drug for Western medicine (WM), XYS could enhance the clinical efficacy of insomnia calculated according to the traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) syndrome score scale (risk ratio [RR]: 1.26; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.13-1.43; P = .0002) and reduced the scores of Hamilton Anxiety Scale (mean difference [MD]: -5.19; 95% CI: -7.78 to -2.60; P < .001), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (MD: -3.35; 95% CI: -4.86 to -1.84; P < .001), Self-rating Anxiety Scale (MD: -9.38; 95% CI: -10.20 to -8.75; P < .001), TCM syndrome score scale for insomnia (MD: -4.45; 95% CI: -6.65 to -2.24; P < .001), and TCM syndrome score scale for anxiety (MD: -5.54; 95% CI: -9.48 to -1.6; P = .006). The summary analysis also shows that the separate use of XYS was advantageous in reducing the scores of the Hamilton Anxiety Scale (MD: -3.70; 95% CI: -6.31 to -1.09; P = .005), Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (MD: -1.82; 95% CI: -2.39 to -1.24; P < .001), and Self-rating Anxiety Scale (MD: -10.79; 95% CI: -14.09 to -7.49; P < .001). The incidence of adverse events with XYS as an ancillary drug or used separately was lower than that in the WM. CONCLUSION Our systematic evaluation and meta-analysis showed that XYS combined with WM or XYS alone was beneficial for improving sleep quality and relieving anxiety. Due to the low methodological quality, small sample size, and significant heterogeneity of RCTs, more rigorous and scientific clinical trials are required to further evaluate the efficacy and safety of XYS. Abstract
To investigate the sleep quality and mental health status of healthcare professionals during the outbreak of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) in order to promote timely intervention and treatment. An Questionnaire Star of WeChat online survey was conducted at Hwamei Hospital, University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, NingBo, China. The questionnaire consisted of two parts including sociodemographic characteristics, and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD-7) scale, a depression screening scale (Patient Health Questionnaire-9 [PHQ-9]) so as to investigate the sleep quality and mental health status of healthcare professionals during the outbreak of COVID-19.The data were analyzed with the t-test, χ2 test, one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Pearson correlation, P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant. The mean score of PSQI is 5.8 ± 3.7 and the incidence of sleep disorders was 28.8% among the healthcare professionals and was related to occupation, title, education level, role and some underlying diseases. The positive rates for anxiety and depression among the healthcare professionals were 33.2% and 39.4% according to the GAD-7 and PHQ-9. Mental health status was related to occupation, education level, role and some underlying diseases. During the COVID-19 outbreak, sleep quality was significantly correlated with anxiety and depression among the healthcare professionals. The incidences of sleep disorder, anxiety and depression among healthcare professionals have been high. Furthermore, these disorders are interrelated and require timely intervention and treatment.

Abstract
PURPOSE Insomnia is highly prevalent in prisoners. The purpose of this paper is a review of research evidence on interventions with sleep as an outcome (2000 to 2020) and rates of insomnia prevalence and associated factors in prisons (2015 to 2020). DESIGN/METHODOLOGY/APPROACH An internet-based search used Medline, PubMed, PsycINFO (EBSCOhost), Embase, Web of Science and Scopus. Seven interventions and eight sleep prevalence or sleep-associated factor papers were identified. FINDINGS Intervention research was very limited and the quality of the research design was generally poor. Interventions such as cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I), yoga and mindfulness can be beneficial in a prison setting. This review identified a high prevalence of insomnia in prisons across the world, which was supported by recent evidence. Factors associated with insomnia include anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, personality disorder and pain. RESEARCH LIMITATIONS/IMPLICATIONS There is a need for appropriately powered randomised control trials of CBT-I in prisons and a need to use objective measures of sleep quality. ORIGINALITY/VALUE Due to a lack of an up-to-date review, this paper fulfils the need for a review of the evidence on interventions in prison settings with sleep as an outcome, rates of insomnia prevalence and associated factors in prisons.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Atopic dermatitis imparts a substantial patient burden, including itch, sleep disturbance, and decreased health-related quality of life. OBJECTIVE This analysis evaluated changes in patient-reported outcomes of disease-specific signs/symptoms and health-related quality of life in adult and adolescent patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis treated with once-daily oral abrocitinib 200-mg or 100-mg monotherapy. METHODS Pooled data from one phase IIb (NCT02780167) and two phase III (NCT03349060, JADE MONO-1; NCT03575871, JADE MONO-2) monotherapy trials in adult and adolescent patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis were analyzed. Patient-reported outcome assessments included: global severity, itch, and multi-item measures that assess other signs and symptoms of atopic dermatitis. Additional patient-reported outcome assessments measured depression, anxiety, fatigue, disease-specific and general health-related quality of life, and work and general productivity among employed patients. RESULTS Overall, 942 patients were included in this analysis. Improvements were observed from the first post-baseline assessment to week 12 across all patient-reported outcomes, including Patient Global Assessment (PtGA) score of 0/1 (35.5%, 19.8%, and 5.9% for 200 mg, 100 mg, and placebo, respectively), ≥ 4-point improvement in Night Time Itch Scale (NTIS; 57.0%, 42.7%, and 12.7%), change from baseline in Patient-Oriented Eczema Measure (POEM) score (- 11.4, - 8.2, and - 3.4), 1-point improvement in Pruritus and Symptoms Assessment for Atopic Dermatitis (PSAAD; 75.2%, 65.1%, and 33.5%), Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scales (HADS) anxiety (- 2.0, - 1.7, and - 1.0) and depression (- 1.7, - 1.3, and - 0.1). CONCLUSIONS Abrocitinib monotherapy improved disease-specific signs/symptoms and health-related quality of life across multiple domains as reported by adult and adolescent patients with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis, complementing clinician-reported efficacy and safety outcomes. Abstract
Insomnia-the unwelcome experience of difficulty sleeping-is common and can be acute, intermittent, or chronic. Insomnia can be the presenting symptom for several common sleep disorders, but it also often occurs comorbidly with mental and physical health conditions. Evaluating the symptom of insomnia requires assessing-largely by history-whether an underlying condition explains it. Insomnia disorder is the diagnostic term for the symptom of insomnia that merits specific attention. Cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia is the preferred treatment approach because of its efficacy, safety, and durability of benefit, but pharmaceutical treatments are widely used for insomnia symptoms.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbances are associated with numerous mood disorders. Similarly, anxiety and depression are associated with modulation of the psychoneuroimmune (PNI) axis. This study hypothesized that changes in both monitored and self-reported measures of sleep would relate to changes in circulating cytokine levels in an emotionally distressed population of cervical cancer survivors. METHODS Biospecimens, patient-reported outcome (PRO) measures, and actigraphy were collected from cervical cancer survivors enrolled in a biobehavioral clinical trial. Longitudinal changes over a 4-month period were examined. Sleep time measured by actigraphy and PRO were analyzed for correlative changes with emotional distress and serum cytokines (n = 71). RESULTS Longitudinal change in the actigraph measure of sleep time was inversely associated with changes in depression and anxiety (test for linear trend, p = 0.02 and p = 0.05 respectively), as well as acute-phase response/pro-inflammatory cytokines (test for linear trend, p = 0.003, interleukin (IL)-2; 0.022, IL-1β; 0.0002, IL-6; and 0.049, tumor necrosis factor α). Conversely, changes in self-reported sleep problems were related to an increase in depression and anxiety (p = 0.001 and p = 0.01 respectively), the T helper 2 (Th2) cytokine IL-5 (p = 0.027), and the counter-regulatory cytokine IL-10 (0.016). CONCLUSION This study showed that an increase in sleep time or decrease in sleep problems corresponded with a reduction in self-reported emotional distress and attenuation of pro-inflammatory, Th2, and counter-regulatory cytokines. Our results support sleep measurement as a meaningful biobehavioral variable in cancer survivorship. This study also indicates that sleep investigators should be aware that choice of methodology might influence concordance with different classes of immune parameters.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Epidemiological studies of insomnia in the Middle East remain scarce. The present study aimed to estimate the prevalence of insomnia and explore its associations in the general population of Qatar. With almost 100 nationalities, Qatar is one of the most culturally diverse, richest, and fastest developing countries in the Arabian Peninsula. METHODS A probability sample of community-dwelling adults were surveyed in February of 2019. A total of 1611 respondents completed face-to-face interviews in Arabic or English. Logistic regression modeled associations with insomnia, our dependent variable, as defined by a score of ≤16 on the eight-item Sleep Condition Indicator or according to criteria for insomnia in the Diagnostic & Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, fifth edition or DSM-5. RESULTS Approximately, 5.5% of the sample screened positive for insomnia and the 30-day prevalence of those who met all the DSM-5 criteria for insomnia disorder was 3.0%. In addition, 2.0% of the sample screened positive for depression and 3.4% for anxiety in the past 2 weeks. Multivariable analysis showed the following were significantly associated with insomnia: Arab ethnicity, young age, unemployment, being married, having less than high school education, fair or poor health, anxiety, and depression. CONCLUSIONS Insomnia prevalence was in the lower range of previously reported DSM-defined estimates from developed Western countries. Our findings highlight the need for raising awareness and improving sleep hygiene in potential risk groups such as younger adults and those of Arab ethnicity, in addition to incorporating insomnia screening in the provision of mental health services.

Abstract
Background Several recent genome-wide association studies suggested insomnia and anemia may share some common genetic components. We thus examined whether adults with anemia had higher odds of having insomnia relative to those without anemia in a cross-sectional study and a meta-analysis. Methods Included in this cross-sectional study were 12,614 Chinese adults who participated in an ongoing cohort, the Kailuan Study. Anemia was defined as hemoglobin levels below 12.0 g/dL in women and 13.0 g/dL in men. Insomnia was assessed using the Chinese version of the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS). A total AIS score ≥6 was considered insomnia. The association between anemia and insomnia was assessed using a logistic regression model, adjusting for potential confounders such as age, sex, chronic disease status, and plasma C-reactive protein concentrations. A meta-analysis was conducted using the fixed effects model to pool results from our study and three previously published cross-sectional studies on this topic in adult populations. Results Individuals with anemia had greater odds of having insomnia (adjusted odds ratio [OR]: 1.32; 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.03–1.70) compared with individuals without anemia. A significant association persisted after we excluded individuals with chronic inflammation, as suggested by C-reactive protein levels >1 mg/L (adjusted OR: 1.68; 95% CI: 1.22–2.32). The meta-analysis results, including 22,134 participants, also identified a positive association between anemia and insomnia (pooled OR: 1.39; 95% CI: 1.22–1.57). Conclusions The presence of anemia was significantly associated with a higher likelihood of having insomnia in adults. Due to the nature of the cross-sectional study design, results should be interpreted with caution.

Abstract
Poor sleep quality is associated with negative health outcomes and high treatment burden. This study investigated the prevalence of poor sleep quality and its socio-demographic correlates among older adults in Hebei province, which is a predominantly agricultural region of China. A large-scale cross-sectional epidemiological survey was conducted from April to August 2016. The study used a multistage, stratified, cluster random sampling method. Sleep quality was assessed by the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). A total of 3,911 participants were included. The prevalence of poor sleep quality (defined as PSQI > 7) was 21.0% (95% CI 19.7–22.2%), with 22.3% (95% CI 20.9–23.8%) in rural areas and 15.9% (95% CI 13.4–18.4%) in urban areas. Multivariable logistic regression analyses found that female gender (P < 0.001, OR 2.4, 95% CI 2.00–2.82), rural areas (P = 0.002, OR 1.5, 95% CI 1.14–1.86), presence of major medical conditions (P < 0.001, OR 2.4, 95% CI 2.02–2.96) and family history of psychiatric disorders (P < 0.001, OR 2.7, 95% CI 1.60–4.39) were independently associated with higher risk of poor sleep quality. Poor sleep quality was common among older adults in Hebei province of China. Regular assessment of sleep quality and accessible sleep treatments for older population should be provided in agricultural areas of China.

Abstract
PURPOSE Comorbid anxiety and depression in people with epilepsy (PWE) are highly prevalent and contribute to low quality of life (QOL) and may even lead to poor outcomes of epilepsy. Among the various factors that affect these negative emotional comorbidities, possible gender differences remain poorly understood and are often neglected. This research aimed to determine whether there are discrepancies in the incidence and influence factors of anxiety and depression between men and women with epilepsy in a hospital in northwest China. METHODS A total of 158 adult PWE (female: N = 65; 41.1%) completed self-report questionnaires, including the Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS), the Self-rating Depression Scale (SDS), the Chinese version of the Quality of Life in Epilepsy-31 (QOLIE-31) inventory and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Inventory (PSQI). The comparison between male and female PWE was made by regression analysis. RESULTS For the prevalence of anxiety and depression in PWE, no gender difference was found in this study. However, the moderating factors of psychiatric comorbidities were significantly different between men and women: male PWE with comorbid anxiety were more likely to be affected by sleep quality, while anxiety symptoms in female PWE were closely associated with the frequency of seizures. Education years and QOL social function were significant indicators of depression in male PWE but not in female PWE. The important and common predictor for anxiety and depressive symptoms in PWE was QOL energy/fatigue, with male patients being more affected. CONCLUSION For the PWE included in this study, the incidence of comorbid anxiety and depression in PWE was similar for men and women, but the moderating factors affecting comorbid anxiety and depressive disorders differed between genders: male PWE were more likely to be affected by psychosocial factors, while female PWE were more influenced by epilepsy itself. This exploration suggests that gender-specific health care should be considered in epilepsy therapy to improve the psychiatric condition and QOL of PWE, and different treatments should be conducted for male and female PWE to prevent negative emotional comorbidities.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) can be caused by neoplasms involving the upper aerodigestive tract. Currently, many of these patients have this diagnosis missed, as most adults diagnosed with OSA do not undergo adequate head and neck examination including flexible nasendoscopy. We performed a review of the literature to shed light on this phenomenon and outline the pathologies and issues surrounding this sub-population of patients diagnosed with OSA. METHODS A scoping review of the literature was conducted on head and neck neoplasms presenting with OSA. Data were extracted on demographics, clinical presentation, histopathology, treatment and patient outcomes. RESULTS Sixty-seven articles were included, describing 79 patients. Mean age was 45.8 years, and 77.2% were male. Symptoms of OSA were present for an average of 29.2 months before a diagnosis of causative neoplasm was made. Forty-two different benign and malignant histopathological entities were reported. At diagnosis, the causative pathology of 100% of patients was visible on head and neck examination including flexible nasendoscopy, while only 53.2% were visible on trans-oral examination. One-third of patients had commenced inappropriate treatment for OSA, including three who had undergone sleep surgical procedures. The majority of patients were treated with surgery alone (72.2%). CONCLUSION Although rare, neoplasms of the upper aerodigestive tract should be considered as a cause of OSA, especially in patients experiencing other symptoms in addition to the typical symptoms of OSA. They should particularly be considered in patients with comparatively lower body mass index or those with worsening OSA without an apparent cause identified.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Although people who sleep poorly may attempt to relieve anxiety for better sleep quality, whether daily alcohol consumption is a factor that moderates anxiety and sleep disturbance is not known. PURPOSE The aim of the study was to explore (a) the association between anxiety and sleep quality and (b) whether daily alcohol consumption acted as a moderator between anxiety and sleep quality in those who reported sleeping poorly. METHODS Eighty-four participants aged 20-80 years who reported poor sleep (Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index > 5) in northern Taiwan were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. A structured questionnaire covering demographics (including daily alcohol consumption), level of anxiety, level of depression, and perceived sleep quality was used to collect data. RESULTS The participants were mostly women (72.6%). The mean age was 41.81 (SD = 12.62) years; 51.2%, 19.0%, 13.1%, and 14.3%, respectively, had minimal, mild, moderate, and severe anxiety. After adjusting for factors related to sleep quality using multiple regression analysis, receiving sleep therapy, consuming alcohol on a daily basis, and having anxiety were found to be predictors of poor sleep quality. Moreover, daily alcohol consumption was found to moderate the relationship between anxiety and sleep quality. CONCLUSIONS/IMPLICATIONS FOR PRACTICE People who sleep poorly should avoid misusing alcohol to self-treat poor sleep quality or anxiety and should instead utilize sleep hygiene education and mental healthcare. Daily alcohol consumption may be a moderator between anxiety status and sleep quality.

Abstract
The 22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11.2DS) is associated with an increased risk for psychiatric disorders. Although most of the 22q11.2DS patients have a 3.0-Mb deletion, existing mouse models only mimic a minor mutation of 22q11.2DS, a 1.5-Mb deletion. The role of the genes existing outside the 1.5-Mb deletion in psychiatric symptoms of 22q11.2DS is unclear. In this study, we generated a mouse model that reproduced the 3.0-Mb deletion of the 22q11.2DS (Del(3.0 Mb)/ +) using the CRISPR/Cas9 system. Ethological and physiological phenotypes of adult male mutants were comprehensively evaluated by visual-evoked potentials, circadian behavioral rhythm, and a series of behavioral tests, such as measurement of locomotor activity, prepulse inhibition, fear-conditioning memory, and visual discrimination learning. As a result, Del(3.0 Mb)/ + mice showed reduction of auditory prepulse inhibition and attenuated cue-dependent fear memory, which is consistent with the phenotypes of existing 22q11.2DS models. In addition, Del(3.0 Mb)/ + mice displayed an impaired early visual processing that is commonly seen in patients with schizophrenia. Meanwhile, unlike the existing models, Del(3.0 Mb)/ + mice exhibited hypoactivity over several behavioral tests, possibly reflecting the fatigability of 22q11.2DS patients. Lastly, Del(3.0 Mb)/ + mice displayed a faster adaptation to experimental jet lag as compared with wild-type mice. Our results support the validity of Del(3.0 Mb)/ + mice as a schizophrenia animal model and suggest that our mouse model is a useful resource to understand pathogenic mechanisms of schizophrenia and other psychiatric disorders associated with 22q11.2DS.

Abstract
Medication adherence is a key health outcome that reflects the health and general well-being of patients with hypertension. Challenges with adherence are common and associated with clinical, behavioural and psychosocial factors. This study sought to provide data on the extent of medication adherence among male patients with hypertension and their biopsychosocial predictors. Patient and clinical characteristics, psychological distress, insomnia and sexual dysfunction were hypothesized to predict outcomes of medication adherence. Utilizing quantitative data from a hospital-based cross-sectional study from 358 male out-patients with hypertension attending a tertiary hospital in Ghana, medication adherence was associated with age, marital status, educational level, income, duration of diagnosis, number of medications taken and sexual dysfunction. These findings support the need for biopsychosocial interventions aiming at promoting adherence while taking these factors into consideration for the benefit of improving the health and general well-being of male patients with hypertension.

Abstract
Sleep deprivation and disorders are linked to reduced DMN connectivity. Less is known about how naturalistic sleep patterns - specifically sleep irregularity - relate to the DMN, particularly among adolescents and young adults. Additionally, no studies have utilized graph theory analysis to clarify whether sleep-related decreases in connectivity reflect global or local DMN changes. Twenty-five healthy adolescents and young adults (age range = 12-22; mean = 18.08; SD = 2.64, 56% female) completed 7 days of actigraphy and resting-state fMRI. Sleep regularity was captured by the Sleep Regularity Index (SRI) and the relationship between the SRI and DMN was examined using graph theory analysis. Analogous analyses explored relationships between the SRI and additional resting-state networks. Greater sleep regularity related to decreased path length (increased network connectivity) in DMN regions, particularly the right and left lateral parietal lobule, and the Language Network, including the left inferior frontal gyrus and the left posterior superior frontal gyrus. Findings were robust to covariates including sex and age. Sleep and DMN function may be tightly linked during adolescence and young adulthood, and reduced DMN connectivity may reflect local changes within the network. Future studies should assess how this relationship impacts cognitive development and neuropsychiatric outcomes in this age group.

Abstract
Background: Insomnia is highly prevalent in patients with substance use disorders (SUD), and it has been related to a worse course of addiction. Insomnia during detoxification in a hospital has not been adequately studied. This study aims to compare sociodemographic, clinical, and psychopathological characteristics of SUD patients undergoing a detoxification program, by comorbidity and insomnia symptoms. Methodology: We recruited 481 patients who received pharmacological and psychotherapeutic treatment for detoxification. They were evaluated through semi-structured interviews, standardized questionnaires, and a specific sleep log. A bivariate and multivariate analysis of the data was performed. Results: Insomnia was reported by 66.5% patients, with sleep-maintenance insomnia the most frequent issue, followed by early morning awakening and sleep-onset insomnia. Patients with alcohol use disorder and cannabis use disorder had higher prevalence of sleep-onset insomnia. Patients with cocaine and heroin use disorder had higher prevalence of sleep-maintenance insomnia. Independent factors that allowed the identification of insomnia symptoms included being female (OR: 3.43), polysubstance use (OR: 2.85), comorbid anxiety disorder (OR: 2.02), and prior admission for detoxification (OR: 1.22). Conclusions: Insomnia symptoms are very prevalent in patients admitted for detoxification. The diagnosis and therapeutic strategies for the insomnia symptoms should be improved, especially in women and in patients with greater addiction severity and with anxiety disorders.

Abstract
Background: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been associated with mental disorders, but the strength of this association is unknown. The aim of our study was to investigate the association among OSA, depression, and anxiety in adults and to quantitatively summarize the results. Methods: A literature search in Medline, PubMed, PsycInfo, Scopus, and Web of Science was conducted. Seventy-three articles were selected for study. Results: The pooled prevalence of depressive and anxious symptoms in OSA patients was 35% (95% CI, 28-41%) and 32% (95% CI, 22-42%), respectively. Conclusions: The association between OSA, anxiety, and depression indicates the value of an early diagnosis and personalized treatment of OSA to improve mental disorders conditioning compliance to therapy. These conditions share a probably bidirectional relationship.

Abstract
Alterations in sleep are extremely common in patients with neuropsychiatric illness. In addition, sleep disorders such as insomnia, obstructive sleep apnea, rapid eye movement sleep behavior disorder, and circadian rhythm disorders commonly occur at a rate greater than the general population in neuropsychiatric conditions. Historically, sleep problems have been viewed as symptoms of associated neuropsychiatric disorders. However, there is increasing evidence suggesting a complex inter-relationship with possible bidirectional causality. The inter-relatedness of these conditions represents an opportunity for understanding mechanisms and improving clinical treatment. To the extent that sleep problems affect neuropsychiatric conditions, it may be possible to address sleep problems and have a positive impact on the course of neuropsychiatric illnesses. Further, some treatments for sleep disorders have direct effects on neuropsychiatric illnesses that may be unrelated to their effects on sleep disorders. Similarly, neuropsychiatric conditions and their treatments can affect sleep and sleep disorders. This article reviews available evidence on the effects of therapies for sleep disorders on neuropsychiatric conditions and also secondarily considers the impacts of therapies for neuropsychiatric conditions on sleep. Primary goals of this review are to identify gaps in current research, to determine the extent to which the cross-therapeutic effects of these treatments help to elucidate therapeutic or pathological mechanisms, and to assist clinicians in optimizing therapeutic choice in patients with sleep disorders and neuropsychiatric conditions.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: Diet is closely linked to mental health. The aim of this study was to explore the link between diet and mental health in community dwelling Japanese women. Materials and Methods: A total of 89 community dwelling Japanese women, aged 66.8 ± 7.6 years, were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Diet surveys were evaluated using the brief-type self-administered diet history questionnaire (BDHQ) and mental health was evaluated using the general health questionnaire-12 (GHQ) and clinical parameters. Results: The mean energy intake was 1806 ± 570 kcal and the GHQ score was 1.0 ± 1.4. Among nutrients, the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio was significantly correlated with the GHQ score (r = 0.269, p = 0.011), and some micronutrients and vitamins were weakly or negatively correlated with the GHQ score. Among the food groups, fish and shellfish were negatively correlated with the GHQ scores. Multiple regression analysis demonstrated that the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio was the determinant factor for the GHQ score, even after adjusting for confounding factors. Conclusions: These results suggest that a proper diet to reduce the n-6/n-3 fatty acid ratio may improve mental health in community dwelling Japanese women.

Abstract
Sleep problems are considered a core symptom of depression. However, there is little information about the comorbidity of sleep problems and depression in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and whether sleep problems with depression confer additional risk for decrements in health compared to sleep problems alone. This study thus examined the association between sleep problems and depression and whether sleep problems with depression are associated with an increased risk for poorer health in 46 LMICs. Cross-sectional, community-based data from 237 023 adults aged ≥18 years from the World Health Survey (WHS) 2002–2004 were analyzed. Information on sleep problems (severe/extreme) and International Classification of Diseases 10th Revision depression/depression subtypes was collected. Multivariable logistic (binary and multinomial) and linear regression analyses were performed. Sleep problems were associated with subsyndromal depression (odds ratio [OR]: 2.23, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.84–2.70), brief depressive episode (OR = 2.48, 95% CI = 2.09–2.95) and depressive episode (OR = 3.61, 95% CI = 3.24–4.03). Sleep problems with depression (vs. sleep problems alone) conferred additional risk for anxiety, perceived stress and decrements in health in the domains of mobility, self-care, pain, cognition, and interpersonal activities. Clinicians should be aware that the co-occurrence of sleep problems and depression is associated with a variety of adverse health outcomes in LMICs. Detecting this co-occurrence may be important for treatment planning.

Abstract
PURPOSE This study explored the medical comorbidities of mental disorders using association rule mining. DESIGN AND METHODS Patients diagnosed with mental disorders between 2002 and 2010 were identified. An equal number of nonmental disorder subjects were randomly selected and matched with case group by age and gender. FINDINGS Sleep disorders and digestive diseases were frequent comorbidities among mental disorders. The specific medical comorbidities were diabetes mellitus, chronic liver disease, extrapyramidal diseases, disorders of stomach function, general symptoms, sleep disturbance, and family circumstances. PRACTICE IMPLICATIONS The results suggest that education of professional knowledge of comorbid conditions should be provided to nurses for caring patients with mental illnesses.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis (AD) is a chronic disease characterized by intense, persistent and debilitating itch, resulting in sleep deprivation, signs of anxiety and depression, impaired quality of life and reduced productivity. The Peak Pruritus Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) was developed and validated as a single-item, patient-reported outcome (PRO) of itch severity. OBJECTIVES To describe the content validity and psychometric assessment (test-retest reliability, construct validity, known-groups validity, sensitivity to change) of the Peak Pruritus NRS, and to derive empirically a responder definition to identify adults with a meaningful change in itch. METHODS Content validity was assessed through in-depth patient interviews. Psychometric assessments used data from phase IIb and phase III dupilumab clinical trials and included test-retest reliability, construct validity, known-groups validity and sensitivity to change in patients with moderate-to-severe AD. RESULTS Interview participants indicated that the Peak Pruritus NRS was a relevant, clear and comprehensive assessment of itch severity. Peak Pruritus NRS scores showed large, positive correlations with existing PRO measures of itch, and weak or moderate correlations with clinician-reported measures assessing objective signs of AD. Peak Pruritus NRS score improvements were highly correlated with improvements in other itch PROs, and moderately correlated with improvements in clinician-reported measures assessing objective signs of AD. The most appropriate threshold for defining a clinically relevant, within-person response was ≥ 2-4-point change in the Peak Pruritus NRS. CONCLUSIONS The Peak Pruritus NRS is a well-defined, reliable, sensitive and valid scale for evaluating worst itch intensity in adults with moderate-to-severe AD.

Abstract
Background and Purpose This study aimed to determine the subjective and objective improvements in sleep quality after treatment with gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA; 300 mg daily) extracted from unpolished rice germ. Methods This study was a prospective, randomized, double-blind, and placebo-controlled trial. In total, 40 patients who complained of insomnia symptoms were enrolled and randomly assigned to the GABA treatment group (n=30) or the placebo group (n=10). Polysomnography was performed, and sleep questionnaires were administered before treatment and after 4 weeks of treatment. Results After 4 weeks of treatment the sleep latency had decreased [13.4±15.7 min at pretreatment vs. 5.7±6.2 min at posttreatment (mean±SD), p=0.001] and the sleep efficacy had increased (79.4±12.9% vs. 86.1±10.5%, p=0.018) only in the GABA treatment group. Adverse events occurred in four subjects (10%). Conclusions This study shows that treatment with unpolished-rice-germ-derived GABA improved not only the subjective sleep quality but also the objective sleep efficacy without severe adverse events.

Abstract
Sleep deficiency is a common public health problem associated with many diseases, such as obesity and cardiovascular disease. In this study, we established a sleep deprivation (SD) mouse model using a 'stick over water' method and observed the effect of sleep deficiency on ocular surface health. We found that SD decreased aqueous tear secretion; increased corneal epithelial cell defects, corneal sensitivity, and apoptosis; and induced squamous metaplasia of the corneal epithelium. These pathological changes mimic the typical features of dry eye. However, there was no obvious corneal inflammation and conjunctival goblet cell change after SD for 10 days. Meanwhile, lacrimal gland hypertrophy along with abnormal lipid metabolites, secretory proteins and free amino-acid profiles became apparent as the SD duration increased. Furthermore, the ocular surface changes induced by SD for 10 days were largely reversed after 14 days of rest. We conclude that SD compromises lacrimal system function and induces dry eye. These findings will benefit the clinical diagnosis and treatment of sleep-disorder-related ocular surface diseases.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Women with comorbid depression and anxiety in the postpartum period experience more complex and severe symptoms than women with depression or anxiety alone; however, little is known about what influences these symptoms, especially among women from specific ethnic backgrounds. The objective of this study was to identify determinants of comorbid depression and anxiety symptomatology by 24 weeks postpartum in a cohort of Chinese-Canadian women. METHODS A longitudinal cohort study was completed where 549 Chinese immigrant and Canadian-born women in Toronto were followed to 24 weeks postpartum. Questionnaires included risk factors measured at 4 weeks. Logistic regression was used to develop a model of comorbidity (Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale score > 9; State-Trait Anxiety Inventory score > 40) up to and including 24 weeks. RESULTS Previous history of postpartum (AOR 2.42, 95% CI 1.42-4.14) and non-postpartum (AOR 4.20, 95% CI 2.21-7.98) depression, maternal age < 26 years (AOR 1.83, 95% CI 1.04-3.22), perception of support (AOR 0.97, 95% CI 0.94-1.00), acculturative stress (AOR 1.03, 95% CI 1.01-1.04), maternal fatigue (AOR 1.12, 95% CI 1.07-1.17), and perceived infant sleep problems (AOR 2.06, 95% CI 1.27-3.43) were significantly associated with comorbid depression and anxiety in the first 24 weeks postpartum. LIMITATIONS Our sample consisted of Chinese-Canadian women; this study should be replicated in other ethnic groups to see if and how risk factors of postpartum comorbidity differ. CONCLUSION The factors identified herein offer insight into groups of Chinese-Canadian women who might benefit most from early identification and treatment and suggest targets for prevention.

Abstract
The aim of this study was to explore the association between sleep-related problems with the occurrence of minor psychiatric disorders in shift workers of southern Brazil. A cross-sectional study with 1202 workers (785 females) aged 18-50 years was carried out. Minor psychiatric disorders were assessed using the Self-Reporting Questionnaire (SRQ-20), and four sleep problems were collected and analyzed: sleep deprivation (≤ 5h), difficulty falling asleep, waking up during sleep, and sleep medication use. Results show that the overall prevalence of minor psychiatric disorders was 26.8%, but it was more prevalent among females than males (30.2% vs. 20.4%). Nightshift work was significantly associated with the occurrence of sleep-related problems. After adjusting for confounding factors, the number of sleep-related problems showed a positive linear trend with psychiatric disorders in both sexes. Having two or more sleep-related problems was associated with increased probability of psychiatric disorders approximately three-fold among males and two-fold among females, when compared with those without sleep problems. In conclusion, this study demonstrated that sleep-related problems have a strong and independent association with psychiatric disorders among shift workers. Furthermore, the prevalence of both conditions was higher among females than males; however, the strength of these associations was higher in males.

Abstract
La apnea del sueño es un síndrome que afecta múltiples sistemas y produce variados síntomas. En el presente artículo se revisan las enfermedades psiquiátricas más frecuentes asociadas a este y la necesidad de realizar un diagnóstico adecuado y un tratamiento interdisciplinario. La entidad que más se ha podido encontrar en los pacientes con apnea del sueño es la depresión y se piensa que se debe a la fragmentación del sueño, la cual altera la producción de neurotransmisores a nivel cerebral. La ansiedad es la segunda entidad con mayor frecuencia, quizás debido a la liberación de catecolaminas durante la noche. Existen otras sintomatologías asociadas a la apnea del sueño que deben ser revisadas y que mejorarían con un tratamiento adecuado, así como también mejoraría la calidad de vida de los pacientes, pues la atención, la concentración y la memoria incrementarían o disminuirían la irritabilidad y otros síntomas.

Abstract
Background Neuropsychological evidence is not sufficient concerning whether there is cognitive impairment in patients with primary insomnia. Further study is needed in this regard. Aims To measure the changes in cognitive functioning in patients with primary insomnia. Methods 40 patients with insomnia (insomnia group) and 48 normal sleepers (control group) were tested using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), episodic memory test, and Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA). Results The insomnia group had significantly lower scores than the control group in the naming (t=3.17, p=0.002), immediate memory (t=3.33, p=0.001), and delayed recall (t=6.05, p=0.001) sections of the MoCA, as well as a lower overall score on the MoCA (t=3.24, p=0.002). Participants with different degrees of insomnia also had significantly different scores in naming (F=7.56, p=0.001), language (F=3.22, p=0.045), total score (F=6.72, p=0.002), delayed memory (F=8.41, p=0.001), and delayed recall (F=22.67, p=0.001) sections of the MoCA. The age of primary insomnia patients was correlated to MoCA total score, immediate memory, delayed recall, and delayed recognition function, also with statistical significance. The years of education of primary insomnia patients was also significantly correlated to overall MoCA score, as well as visuospatial and executive function, naming, attention, language, and abstraction sections of the MoCA. Conclusion Primary insomnia patients have cognitive impairment. The more severe the insomnia is, the wider the range of and the more serious the degree of cognitive impairment is.
