A critical review of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) in membrane bioreactors: Characteristics, roles in membrane fouling and control strategies

The effect of temperature on fouling in anaerobic membrane bioreactor: SMP- and EPS-membrane interactions

Biofouling is the main challenge in the operation of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs). Biofouling strongly depends on temperature; therefore, we hypothesize that the interactions and viscoelastic properties of soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) vary with temperature, consequently influencing membrane permeability. This study compares the performance of an AnMBR operated at a similar permeate flux at two temperatures. The transmembrane pressure (TMP) rose rapidly after 5 ± 2 days at 25 °C but only after 18 ± 2 days at 35 °C, although the reactor's biological performance was similar at both temperatures, in terms of the efficiency of dissolved organic carbon removal and biogas composition, which were obtained by changing the hydraulic retention time. Using confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), a higher biofilm amount was detected at 25 °C than at 35 °C, while quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation (QCM-D) showed a more adhesive, but less viscous and elastic EPS layer. In situ optical coherence tomography (OCT) of an ultra-filtration membrane, fed with the mixed liquor suspended solids (MLSS) at the two temperatures, revealed that while a higher rate of TMP increase was obtained at 25 °C, the attachment of biomass from MLSS was markedly less. Increased EPS adhesion to the membrane can accelerate TMP increase during the operation of both the AnMBR and the OCT filtration cell. EPS's reduced viscoelasticity at 25 °C suggests reduced floc integrity and possible increased EPS penetration into the membrane pores. Analysis of the structures of the microbial communities constituting the AnMBR flocs and membrane biofilms reveals temperature's effects on microbial richness, diversity, and abundance, which likely influence the observed EPS properties and consequent AnMBR fouling.

Effectiveness of cloth media filters on mitigating membrane fouling in anaerobic filter membrane bioreactors

Membrane fouling is a persistent challenge that has impeded the broader application of anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs). To mitigate membrane fouling, between the outlet of the UASB anaerobic bioreactor and the PVDF membrane to form the anaerobic filter membrane bioreactor (AnFMBR) system. Through comprehensive experiments, the optimal pore size for cloth filters was determined to be 50 μm. A comprehensive assessment over 140 days of operation shows that the novel AnFMBR had significantly greater resistance to membrane pollution than the traditional AnMBR. The AnFMBR system membrane tank exhibited lower mixed liquor suspended solid and mixed liquor volatile suspended solid concentrations, smaller sludge particle sizes, increased hydrophilicity of sludge flocs, and optimized microbial community distribution compared to those of conventional AnMBRs. The total solids foulant accumulation rate in the AnMBR was 5.1 g/m2/day, while in the AnFMBR, the rate was 2.4 g/m2/day, marking a 53.7 % decrease in fouling rate for the AnFMBR compared with the AnMBR. This decrease indicates that integrating the filtration assembly significantly lowered the rate of solid foulant accumulation on the membrane surface, primarily by controlling the buildup of solid foulants in the cake layer, thereby alleviating membrane fouling. AnFMBR compared to AnMBR, the membrane fouling rate halved, effectively doubled the interval between membrane cleaning from seven days, as observed in the AnMBR system, to fourteen days. These findings underscore the potential of integrating cloth media filters into AnMBRs to improve operational efficiency, economic viability, and sustainability.

Mechanisms and Strategies of Advanced Oxidation Processes for Membrane Fouling Control in MBRs: Membrane-Foulant Removal versus Mixed-Liquor Improvement

Membrane bioreactors (MBRs) are well-established and widely utilized technologies with substantial large-scale plants around the world for municipal and industrial wastewater treatment. Despite their widespread adoption, membrane fouling presents a significant impediment to the broader application of MBRs, necessitating ongoing research and development of effective antifouling strategies. As highly promising, efficient, and environmentally friendly chemical methods for water and wastewater treatment, advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) have demonstrated exceptional competence in the degradation of pollutants and inactivation of bacteria in aqueous environments, exhibiting considerable potential in controlling membrane fouling in MBRs through direct membrane foulant removal (MFR) and indirect mixed-liquor improvement (MLI). Recent proliferation of research on AOPs-based antifouling technologies has catalyzed revolutionary advancements in traditional antifouling methods in MBRs, shedding new light on antifouling mechanisms. To keep pace with the rapid evolution of MBRs, there is an urgent need for a comprehensive summary and discussion of the antifouling advances of AOPs in MBRs, particularly with a focus on understanding the realizing pathways of MFR and MLI. In this critical review, we emphasize the superiority and feasibility of implementing AOPs-based antifouling technologies in MBRs. Moreover, we systematically overview antifouling mechanisms and strategies, such as membrane modification and cleaning for MFR, as well as pretreatment and in-situ treatment for MLI, based on specific AOPs including electrochemical oxidation, photocatalysis, Fenton, and ozonation. Furthermore, we provide recommendations for selecting antifouling strategies (MFR or MLI) in MBRs, along with proposed regulatory measures for specific AOPs-based technologies according to the operational conditions and energy consumption of MBRs. Finally, we highlight future research prospects rooted in the existing application challenges of AOPs in MBRs, including low antifouling efficiency, elevated additional costs, production of metal sludge, and potential damage to polymeric membranes. The fundamental insights presented in this review aim to elevate research interest and ignite innovative thinking regarding the design, improvement, and deployment of AOPs-based antifouling approaches in MBRs, thereby advancing the extensive utilization of membrane-separation technology in the field of wastewater treatment.

Electro living membrane bioreactor for highly efficient wastewater treatment and fouling mitigation: Influence of current density on process performances

The next generation of the self-forming dynamic membrane, referred to in this study as the "Living Membrane (LM)", is a new patented technology based on an encapsulated biological layer that self-forms on a designed coarse-pore size support material during wastewater treatment and acts as a natural membrane filter. Integrating electrochemical processes with wastewater treatment using the LM approach has also been recently studied (the reactor is referred to as the Electro-Living Membrane Bioreactor or e-LMBR). This study investigated the effects of varying current densities, i.e., 0.3, 0.5, and 0.9 mA/cm2, on the performance of an e-LMBR. The results were also compared with those of the Living Membrane Bioreactor or LMBR (without applied current density). Higher pollutant removals were observed in the presence of the electric field. However, the effect of varying applied current densities on the COD (98-99 %), NH3-N (97-99 %), and PO43-P (100 %) removals was not statistically significant. The more prominent differences (p < 0.05) were observed in the decrease of NO3--N concentrations from mixed liquor to effluent, with increasing current density resulting in lower mean NO3--N effluent concentrations (0.3 mA/cm2: 6.13 mg/L; 0.5 mA/cm2: 4.38 mg/L; 0.9 mA/cm2: 3.70 mg/L). The reduction of NO3--N concentrations as wastewater permeated through the LM layer also confirmed its role in removing nitrogen-containing compounds. Higher current densities resulted in lower concentrations of fouling substances, particularly those of microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and transparent exopolymer particles (TEPs). The average values of the temporal variation of transmembrane pressure (d(TMP)/d(t)) in the e-LMBR were extremely low, in the range of 0.013-0.041 kPa/day, throughout the operation period. The highest (d(TMP)/d(t)) was observed for the highest current density. However, the TMP values remained below 2 kPa in all the e-LMBR runs even after the initial LM formation stage.

A typical acidic extracellular polysaccharide alludes to algae-bacteria-collaboration in microalgal-bacterial symbiosis

Microalgal-bacterial symbioses are prevalent in aquatic ecosystems and play a pivotal role in carbon sequestration, significantly contributing to global carbon cycling. The understanding of the contribution of exopolysaccharides (EPSs), a crucial carbon-based component, to the structural integrity of microalgal-bacterial symbioses remains insufficiently elucidated. To address this gap, our study aims to enhance our comprehension of the composition and primary structure of EPSs within a specific type of granular microalgal-bacterial symbiosis named microalgal-bacterial granular sludge (MBGS). Our investigation reveals that the acidic EPSs characteristic of this symbiosis have molecular weights ranging from several hundred thousand to over one million Daltons, including components like glucopyranose, galactopyranose, mannose, and rhamnose. Our elucidation of the backbone linkage of a representative exopolysaccharide revealed a →3)-β-D-Galp-(1→4)-β-D-Glcp-(1→ glycosidic linkage. This linear structure closely resembles bacterial xanthan, while the branched chain structure bears similarities to algal EPSs. Our findings highlight the collaborative synthesis of acidic EPSs by both microalgae and bacteria, emphasizing their joint contribution in the production of macromolecules within microalgal-bacterial symbiosis. This collaborative synthesis underscores the intricate molecular interactions contributing to the stability and function of these symbiotic relationships.

Evaluation of autotrophic process influencing extracellular polymeric substances in aerobic membrane bioreactor with expanded ASM model

A mathematical model was developed to predict the formation of both the autotrophic and heterotrophic extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the aerobic membrane bioreactor (MBR). Batch experimental results and 45-day operation data on a pilot MBR at a sludge retention time (SRT) of 20 d were used to calibrate and validate the model. Simulated MBR setup results demonstrated the key role of the influent COD and NH4+-N in governing the composition of heterotrophic and autotrophic EPS in the MBR. These results also revealed that the autotrophic EPS process was non-ignorable in the system. According to the autotrophic EPS simulation in the MBR, the EPS yield increased with increasing influent COD/NH4+-N ratio towards a constant level. The EPS yield was significantly influenced by the SRT, attributed to the autotrophic process's impact on EPS. Simulation results revealed a slight increase in EPS yield with an SRT of up to 5 days, followed by a rapid decrease beyond that threshold.

Physical conditioning methods for sludge deep dewatering: A critical review

Sludge is an inevitable waste product of sewage treatment with a high water content and large volume, it poses a significant threat of secondary pollution to both water and the atmosphere without proper disposal. In this regard, dewatering has emerged as an attractive method in sludge treatment, as it can reduce the sludge volume, enhance its transportability and calorific value, and even decrease the production of landfill leachate. In recent years, physical conditioning methods including non-chemical conditioners or energy input alone, have been extensively researched for their potential to enhance sludge dewatering efficiency, such as thermal treatment, freeze-thaw, microwave, ultrasonic, skeleton builders addition, and electro-dewatering, as well as combined methods. The main objective of this paper is to comprehensively evaluate the dewatering capacity of various physical conditioning methods, and identify key factors affecting sludge dewatering efficiency. In addition, future research anticipated directions and outlooks are proposed. This work is expected to provide valuable insights for developing efficient, eco-friendly, and low-energy consumption techniques for deep sludge dewatering.

Filtration performance of biofilm membrane bioreactor: Fouling control by threshold flux operation

Membrane fouling is the major factor that restricts the furtherly widespread use of membrane bioreactor (MBR). As a new generation of MBR, biofilm membrane bioreactor (BF-MBR) demonstrates high treatment efficiency and low sludge growth rate, however the filtration performance improvement and membrane fouling control are still the challenges for its further development. This work investigated the filtration performance using resistance in series model and membrane fouling control via threshold flux for BF-MBR. At first, the flux behavior and filtration resistance under various operating conditions, including agitation speed, membrane and TMP, were explored by resistance in series model. Because of the desirable anti-fouling capacity, UP100 and UP030 had the high threshold flux (100 and 90 L m-2 h-1) and low irreversible fouling resistance (1 and 1.3 × 10-10 m-1). Higher shear stress produced by higher agitation speed could reduce membrane fouling, while greatly promote the threshold flux (138 L m-2 h-1) and membrane cleaning efficiency (96%). Moreover, increasing shear stress or selecting membrane with large pore size could decrease the fouling rate and raise the threshold flux. As for TMP, high TMP reduced the removal rate for organic and nutrient, and enhanced the irreversible fouling. Besides, the aerobic-BF-MBR (101 L m-2 h-1 and 1.3 × 10-10 m-1) with lower foulant concentration had a better filtration performance than anoxic-BF-MBR (90 L m-2 h-1 and 1.5 × 10-10 m-1). Additionally, the long-term tests with 10 cycles were conducted to evaluate the industrial application value of BF-MBR (45-58 L m-2 h-1). This work provides the technical support for sustainable filtration performance of BF-MBR.

Non-destructive monitoring and prediction of fouling by organic matters and residual anionic coagulant during membrane process

Physical fouling characteristics on silicon carbide (SiC) membranes induced by various organic matter compounds vary depending on the presence of calcium ions (Ca2+). Both destructive techniques (morphological surface analysis) and non-destructive techniques (fouling properties monitoring) were used to determine the fouling mechanisms and behavior during the membrane filtration systems. Destructive analysis and a modified Hermia model were employed to assess the fouling mechanisms. Fouling behavior was also analyzed through non-destructive monitoring techniques including optical coherence tomography (OCT) and three-dimensional laser scanning confocal microscopy (3D-LSM). At concentrations of 10, 30, and 100 mg/L without Ca2+, the flux decreased by 57-95% for humic acid (HA) and anionic polyacrylamide (APAM). APAM exhibited a notable removal rate of up to 56% without Ca2+. At concentration of 10, 30, and 100 mg/L in the absence of Ca2+, the flux decreased by 6-8% for sodium alginate (SA). However, the addition of Ca2+ led to a reduction in the flux for SA by up to 91% and resulted in a removal rate of 40%. Furthermore, addition of Ca2+ led to an alteration of the fouling characteristics of HA and SA. In the case of HA, higher concentrations resulted in elevated thickness and roughness with correlation coefficients of 0.991 and 0.992, respectively. For SA, increased SA concentration led to a thicker (correlation coefficient of 0.999) but smoother surfaces (correlation coefficients of 0.502). Monitoring of these physical characteristics of the fouling layer through non-destructive analysis is crucial for effective fouling management, optimization of the system performance and extending the lifespan of the membrane. By continuously assessing the fouling layer thickness and surface roughness, we expect to be able to provide insights on the fouling behavior, identify trends, that can help scientists and engineers to make informed decisions regarding fouling control strategies in future.

Mg2+ addition: Unlocking optimized treatment performance and anti-fouling property in microalgal-bacterial membrane bioreactors

While microalgal-bacterial membrane bioreactors (microalgal-bacterial MBRs) have risen as an important technique in the realm of sustainable wastewater treatment, the membrane fouling caused by free microalgae is still a significant challenge to cost-effective operation of the microalgal-bacterial MBRs. Addressing this imperative, the current study investigated the influence of magnesium ion (Mg2+) addition on the biological dynamics and membrane fouling characteristics of the laboratory-scale submerged microalgal-bacterial MBRs. The results showed that Mg2+, important in augmenting photosynthetic process, yielded a biomass concentration of 2.92 ± 0.06 g/L and chlorophyll-a/MLSS (mixed liquor suspended solids) of 33.95 ± 1.44 mg/g in the RMg (Mg2+ addition test group). Such augmentation culminated in elevated total nitrogen and phosphorus removal efficiencies, clocking 81.73 % and 80.98 % respectively in RMg. Remarkably, despite the enhanced microalgae activity and concentration in RMg, the TMP growth rate declined by a significant 46.8 % compared to R0. Detailed characterizations attributed reduced membrane fouling of RMg to a synergy of enlarged floc size and reduced EPS contents. This transformation is intrinsically linked to the bridging action of Mg2+ and its role in creating a non-stressed ecological environment for the microalgal-bacterial MBR. In conclusion, the addition of Mg2+ in the microalgal-bacterial MBR appears an efficient approach, improving the efficiency of pollutant treatment and mitigating fouling, which potentially revolutionizes cost-effective applications and propels the broader acceptance of microalgal-bacterial MBRs. It also of great importance to promote the development and application of microalgal-bacterial wastewater treatment technology.

Microplastics affect membrane biofouling and microbial communities during gravity-driven membrane filtration of primary wastewater

Recently, gravity-driven membrane (GDM) filtration has been adopted as an alternative solution for decentralized wastewater treatment due to easy installation and maintenance, reduced energy and operation cost, and low global warming impact. This study investigated the influence of microplastic size (0.5-0.8 μm and 40-48 μm) and amount (0.1 and 0.2 g/L) on the membrane performance and microbial community in GDM systems for primary municipal wastewater treatment. The results showed that dosing microplastics in the GDM systems led to 9-54% lower permeate flux than that in the control. This was attributed to more cake formation (up to 6.4-fold) with more deposition of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS, up to 1.5-fold) and divalent cations (up to 2.1-fold) in the presence of microplastics, especially with increasing microplastic amount or size. However, the dosed microplastics promoted formation of heterogeneous cake layers with more porous nature, possibly because microplastics created void space in the cake and also tended to bind with divalent cations to reduce EPS-divalent cations interactions. In the biofilm of the GDM systems, the presence of microplastics could lower the number of total species, but it greatly enhanced the abundance of certain dominant prokaryotes (Phenylobacterium haematophilum, Planctomycetota bacterium, and Flavobacteriales bacterium), eukaryotes (Stylonychia lemnae, Halteria grandinella, and Paramicrosporidium saccamoebae), and virus (phylum Nucleocytoviricota), as well as amino acid and lipid metabolic functions. Especially, the small-size microplastics at a higher dosed amount led to more variations of microbial community structure and microbial metabolic functions.

Effect of toluene on m-xylene removal in a biotrickling filter: Performance, biofilm characteristics, and microbial analysis

Hydrophobic volatile organic compounds (VOCs) pose a challenge to the removal efficiency in biotrickling filters (BTFs). The addition of relatively hydrophilic substances presents a promising approach for enhancing the elimination of hydrophobic VOCs. In this study, toluene was introduced into the BTF system alongside m-xylene, and their mixing ratios were changed to explore the interactions and mechanisms under different conditions. The result showed that the most pronounced synergistic interaction occurred when the mixing concentration ratio of m-xylene and toluene was 2:1. The removal efficiency (RE) of m-xylene increased from 88% to 97%, and the elimination capacity (EC) of m-xylene changed from 64 to 72 g m-3 h-1. Under this condition, there was a notable increase in biomass, extracellular polymeric substance (EPS) content, and relative hydrophobicity. Microbial diversity was enhanced observably with Berkeleyces and Mycobacterium potentially playing a positive role in co-degradation. Meanwhile, microbial metabolic function prediction indicated a significant enhancement in metabolic functions. Therefore, the introduction of relatively hydrophilic VOCs represents an effective strategy for enhancing the removal of hydrophobic VOCs in the BTFs.

Tourmaline mediated enhanced autotrophic denitrification: The mechanisms of electron transfer and Paracoccus enrichment

Autotrophic denitrification (AD) without carbon source is an inevitable choice for denitrification of municipal wastewater under the carbon peaking and carbon neutrality goals. This study first employed sulfur-tourmaline-AD (STAD) as an innovative nitrate removal trial technique in wastewater. STAD demonstrated a 2.23-fold increase in nitrate‑nitrogen (NO3--N) removal rate with reduced nitrite‑nitrogen (NO2--N) accumulation, effectively removing 99 % of nitrogen pollutants compared to sulfur denitrification. Some denitrifiers microorganisms that could secrete tyrosine, tryptophan, and aromatic protein (extracellular polymeric substances (EPS)). Moreover, according to the EPS composition and characteristics analysis, the secretion of loosely bound extracellular polymeric substances (LB-EPS) that bound to the bacterial endogenous respiration and enriched microbial abundance, was produced more in the STAD system, further improving the system stability. Furthermore, the addition of tourmaline (Tm) facilitated the discovery of a new genus (Paracoccus) that enhanced nitrate decomposition. Applying optimal electron donors through metabolic pathways and the microbial community helps to strengthen the AD process and treat low carbon/nitrogen ratio wastewater efficiently.

Insights into the role of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) in the spread of antibiotic resistance genes

Antibiotic resistance genes (ARG) are prevalent in aquatic environments. Discharge from wastewater treatment plants is an important point source of ARG release into the environment. It has been reported that biological treatment processes may enhance rather than remove ARG because of their presence in sludge. Attenuation of ARG in biotechnological processes has been studied in depth, showing that many microorganisms can secrete complex extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). These EPS can serve as multifunctional elements of microbial communities, involving aspects, such as protection, structure, recognition, adhesion, and physiology. These aspects can influence the interaction between microbial cells and extracellular ARG, as well as the uptake of extracellular ARG by microbial cells, thus changing the transformative capability of extracellular ARG. However, it remains unclear whether EPS can affect horizontal ARG transfer, which is one of the main processes of ARG dissemination. In light of this knowledge gap, this review provides insight into the role of EPS in the transmission of ARGs; furthermore, the mechanism of ARG spread is analyzed, and the molecular compositions and functional properties of EPS are summarized; also, how EPS influence ARG mitigation is addressed, and factors impacting how EPS facilitate ARG during wastewater treatment are summarized. This review provides comprehensive insights into the role of EPS in controlling the transport and fate of ARG during biodegradation processes at the mechanistic level.

When aerobic granular sludge faces emerging contaminants: A review

The evolution of emerging contaminants (ECs) has caused greater requirements and challenges to the current biological wastewater treatment technology. As one of the most promising biological treatment technologies, the aerobic granular sludge (AGS) process also faces the challenge of ECs. This study summarizes the recent progress and characteristics of several representative ECs (persistent organic pollutants, endocrine disrupting chemicals, antibiotics, and microplastics) in AGS systems that have garnered widespread attention. Additionally, the biodegradation and adsorption mechanisms of ECs were discussed, and the interactions between various ECs and AGS was elucidated. The importance of extracellular polymeric substances for the stabilization of AGS and the removal of ECs is also discussed. Knowledge gaps and future research directions that may enable the practical application of AGS are highlighted. Overall, AGS processes show great application potential and this review provides guidance for the future implementation of AGS technology as well as elucidating the mechanism of its interaction with ECs.

Enhancing electricity-driven methanogenesis by assembling biotic-abiotic hybrid system in anaerobic membrane bioreactor

Biotic-abiotic hybrid systems are promising technologies to enhance methane production in anaerobic wastewater treatment. However, the dense structure of the extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) present in anaerobic granular sludge (AGS) poses challenges with respect to the implementation of hybrid systems and efficient interspecies electron transfer. In this study, the use of AGS with a Ni/Fe layered double hydroxide@activated carbon (Ni/Fe LDH@C-AGS) was investigated in an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR). The hybrid system showed a significant increase of 82% in methane production. Further research revealed that Ni/Fe LDH@C regulated the dense structure of EPS, stimulated the production of cytochromes, and facilitated the decomposition of nonconductive substances. Surprisingly, the hybrid system also promoted resistance to membrane fouling and extended membrane life by 81%. This study provides insights into the operation of a biotic-abiotic hybrid system by regulating the dense structure of EPS ultimately resulting in an enhanced methane production.

Identification of performance and cost in a new backwash method to clean the UF membrane: backwashing with low dosage of NaClO

Ultrafiltration (UF) is widely used in wastewater reclamation treatments. Conventional backwashing is usually performed at regular time intervals (10-120 min) with permeate and without the addition of chemicals. Chemical enhanced backwashing (CEB) is usually applied after 70-90 filtration cycles with added chemicals. These cleaning methods cause membrane fouling and require costly chemicals. Instead of conventional backwashing, we propose herein a new backwashing method involving backwashing the effluent with low doses of sodium hypochlorite (NaClO) named as BELN. The performance and cost of UF backwashing were investigated with Beijing wastewater reclamation treatment. The results showed that the transmembrane pressure (TMP) increased from 33.2 to 48.2 kPa during hydraulic backwashing after 80 filtration cycles but increased from 33.3 to 39.3 kPa during backwashing with a low NaClO content of 20 mg/L. It was also noticed that the hydraulic-irreversible fouling index decreased from 5.58 × 10-3 m2/L to 3.58 × 10-3 m2/L with the new method. According to the three-dimensional fluorescence excitation-emission (3D-EEM), the response increased from 11.9 to 15.2% with BELN. Protein-like material was identified as the main component causing membrane fouling by blocking the membrane pores. The results indicated that the low dosage of NaClO effectively stripped the fouling layer. Finally, based on an economic evaluation, the capacity of the UF process was increased from 76,959 to 109,133 m3/d with the new method. The amount of NaClO consumed for Beijing wastewater reclamation treatment was similarly compared with the conventional backwashing in per year under BELN. The new method has good potential for application.

Towards bio-utilization and energy recovery potential exploration of membrane foulant from membrane bioreactor by using microbial fuel cell-centered technology

The utilization of membrane foulant is expected to push forward the developments of membrane bioreactor (MBR). In this study, the combination of microbial fuel cell (MFC) with bio-electrochemical enhanced hydrolysis process was proposed, and three systems were conducted to utilize the membrane foulant and simultaneously harvest electricity. Polysaccharides (PS), proteins (PN) and humic acid (HA) concentration variations and the fluorescent compound changes in different chambers revealed the biodegradability of membrane foulant. Optimized HRT improved the hydrolysis of membrane foulant while allowing MFC to utilize the biodegradable components efficiently. MFC-MFC system had the highest voltage and satisfactory effluent quality at HRT of 1 d. Microbial community structure analysis indicated that Proteobacteria, Planctomycetes and Bacteroidetes were the majority phyla and network analysis further revealed that Proteobacteria played a key role in membrane foulant utilization. This study suggests that MFC hybrid systems has potential application for synchronous membrane foulant reuse and energy recovery.

Role of inorganic foulants in the aging and deterioration of low-pressure membranes during the chemical cleaning process in surface water treatment: A review

Low-pressure membrane (LPM) filtration, including microfiltration (MF) and ultrafiltration (UF), is a promising technology for the treatment of surface water for drinking and other purposes. Various configurations and operational sequences have been developed to ensure the sustainable provision of clean water by overcoming fouling problems. In the literature, various periodic physical and/or chemical approaches to the cleaning of LPMs have been reported, but little data is available on the aging of MF/UF membranes that results from the interaction between the foulants and the cleaning agent. Periodic physical cleaning of the membrane is expected to return the membrane to its original performance capacity, but it only recovers to a certain level because the remaining foulants cause irreversible fouling. Chemical cleaning can then be employed to recover the membrane from this irreversible fouling but, in the process, it can cause irrecoverable damage to the membrane. In this review, the foulants responsible for irrecoverable damage to MF/UF membranes are summarized, and their interaction with cleaning agents and other foulants is described. The impact of these foulants on various membrane parameters, including filtration efficiency, flux decline, permeability, membrane characterization, and membrane integrity are also summarized and discussed in detail. In addition, mitigation options and future prospects are also discussed with regard to increasing the operational life span of a membrane in a cost-effective manner. Ultimately, this review suggests an advanced control system based on membrane-foulant interactions under the impact of various operational parameters to mitigate the integrity loss of membranes.

Effect of free nitrous acid on extracellular polymeric substances production and membrane fouling in a nitritation membrane bioreactor

The membrane bioreactor (MBR) with nitritation based nitrogen removal processes has attracted growing interest in recent years, although membrane fouling in the nitritation MBR is a challenging issue. In this study, the inhibitory effect of free nitrous acid (FNA) on microbial extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) production and membrane fouling in a nitritation MBR was investigated. Results showed that EPS played a critical role in the biofouling process, and EPS production was affected by FNA concentration. As FNA concentration increased from 5.10 × 10-3 mg N/L to 1.34 × 10-2 mg N/L, protein (PN) and polysaccharide (PS) contents increased from 8.20 to 60.28 mg/g VSS and 4.74-30.46 mg/g VSS, respectively. However, when FNA concentration was 1.48 × 10-2 mg N/L, PN and PS reduced by 20.0% and 10.9%, respectively, indicating that the higher FNA concentration could reduce EPS production. The EPS reduction could be attributed to reduction in the loosely bound (LB) and tightly bound (TB) EPS but not the soluble microbial products (SMP). It was further revealed that higher FNA concentrations up to 1.48 × 10-2 mg N/L consequently mitigate trans-membrane pressure (TMP) rate in terms of dTMP/dt by 25.5% in the nitritation MBR. High throughput sequencing analysis revealed that the increase in FNA led to enrichment of Nitrosomonas but reduction in heterotrophic bacteria. This study showed that the appropriate FNA concentration affected EPS production and hence membrane fouling, leading to the possibility of membrane fouling mitigation by in-situ generated FNA in the nitritation MBR.

Iron-Nitrogen Amendment Reduced Perfluoroalkyl Acids' Phyto-Uptake in the Wheat-Soil Ecosystem: Contributions of Dissolved Organic Matters in Soil Solution and Root Extracellular Polymeric Substances

Understanding the mechanisms underlying perfluoroalkyl acids (PFAAs) translocation, distribution, and accumulation in wheat-soil ecosystems is essential for agricultural soil pollution control and crop ecological risk assessment. This study systematically investigated the translocation of 13 PFAAs under different iron and nitrogen fertilization conditions in a wheat-soil ecosystem. Short-chain PFAAs including PFBA, PFPeA, PFHxA, and PFBS mostly accumulated in soil solution (10.43-55.33%) and soluble extracellular polymeric substances (S-EPS) (11.39-14.77%) by the adsorption to amino- (-NH2) and hydroxyl (-OH) groups in dissolved organic matter (DOM). Other PFAAs with longer carbon chain lengths were mostly distributed on the soil particle surface by hydrophobic actions (74.63-94.24%). Iron-nitrogen amendments triggered (p < 0.05) soil iron-nitrogen cycling, rhizospheric reactive oxygen species fluctuations, and the concentration increases of -NH2 and -OH in the DOM structure. Thus, the accumulation capacity of PFAAs in soil solution and root EPS was increased. In sum, PFAAs' translocation from soil particles to wheat root was synergistically reduced by iron and nitrogen fertilization through increased adsorption of soil particles (p < 0.05) and the retention of soil solution and root EPSs. This study highlights the potential of iron-nitrogen amendments in decreasing the crop ecological risks to PFAAs' pollution.

A Comprehensive Analysis of the Impact of Inorganic Matter on Membrane Organic Fouling: A Mini Review

Membrane fouling is a non-negligible issue affecting the performance of membrane systems. Particularly, organic fouling is the most persistent and severe form of fouling. The complexation between inorganic and organic matter may exacerbate membrane organic fouling. This mini review systematically analyzes the role of inorganic matter in membrane organic fouling. Inorganic substances, such as metal ions and silica, can interact with organic foulants like humic acids, polysaccharides, and proteins through ionic bonding, hydrogen bonding, coordination, and van der Waals interactions. These interactions facilitate the formation of larger aggregates that exacerbate fouling, especially for reverse osmosis membranes. Molecular simulations using molecular dynamics (MD) and density functional theory (DFT) provide valuable mechanistic insights complementing fouling experiments. Polysaccharide fouling is mainly governed by transparent exopolymer particle (TEP) formations induced by inorganic ion bridging. Inorganic coagulants like aluminum and iron salts mitigate fouling for ultrafiltration but not reverse osmosis membranes. This review summarizes the effects of critical inorganic constituents on fouling by major organic foulants, providing an important reference for membrane fouling modeling and fouling control strategies.

Integrating of electrocoagulation process with submerged membrane bioreactor for wastewater treatment under low voltage gradients

Treating and reusing wastewater has become an essential aspect of water management worldwide. However, the increase in emerging pollutants such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are presented in wastewater from various sources like industry, roads, and household waste, makes their removal difficult due to their low concentration, stability, and ability to combine with other organic substances. Therefore, treating a low load of wastewater is an attractive option. The study aimed to address membrane fouling in the submerged membrane bioreactor (SMBR) used for wastewater treatment. An aluminum electrocoagulation (EC) device was combined with SMBR as a pre-treatment to reduce fouling. The EC-SMBR process was compared with a conventional SMBR without EC, fed with real grey water. To prevent impeding biological growth, low voltage gradients were utilized in the EC deviceThe comparison was conducted over 60 days with constant transmembrane pressure and infinite solid retention time (SRT). In phase I, when the EC device was operated at a low voltage gradient (0.64 V/cm), no significant improvement in the pollutants removal was observed in terms of color, turbidity, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). Nevertheless, during phase II, a voltage gradient of 1.26 V/cm achieved up to 100%, 99.7%, 92%, 94.1%, and 96.5% removals in the EC-SMBR process in comparison with 95.1%, 95.4%, 85%, 91.7% and 74.2% removals in the SMBR process for turbidity, color, COD, ammonia nitrogen (NH3-N), total phosphorus (TP), respectively. SMBR showed better anionic surfactant (AS) removal than EC-SMBR. A voltage gradient of 0.64 V/cm in the EC unit significantly reduced fouling by 23.7%, while 1.26 V/cm showed inconsistent results. Accumulation of Al ions negatively affected membrane performance. Low voltage gradients in EC can control SMBR fouling if Al concentration is controlled. Future research should investigate EC-SMBR with constant membrane flux for large-scale applications, considering energy consumption and operating costs.

Antimicrobial Nanoparticles Mediated Prevention and Control of Membrane Biofouling in Water and Wastewater Treatment: Current Trends and Future Perspectives

Global water scarcity and water pollution necessitate wastewater reclamation for further use. As an alternative to conventional techniques, membrane technology is extensively used as an advanced method for water purification and wastewater treatment due to its selectivity, permeability, and efficient removal of pollutants. However, microbial biofouling is a major threat that deteriorates membrane performance and imparts operational challenges. It is a natural phenomenon caused by the undesirable colonization of microbes on membrane surfaces. The economic penalties associated with this menace are enormous. The traditional preventive measures are dominated by biocides, toxic chemicals, cleaners and antifouling surfaces, which are costly and often cause secondary pollution. Recent focus is thus being directed to promote inputs from nanotechnology to control and mitigate this major threat. Different anti-microbial nanomaterials can be effectively used to prevent the adhesion of microbes onto the membrane surfaces and eliminate microbial biofilms, to provide an economical and eco-friendly solution to biofouling. This review addresses the formation of microbial biofilms and biofouling in membrane operations. The potential of nanocomposite membranes in alleviating this problem and the challenges in commercialization are discussed. The antifouling mechanisms are also highlighted, which are not widely elucidated.

A Review on Opportunities and Limitations of Membrane Bioreactor Configuration in Biofuel Production

Biofuels are a clean and renewable source of energy that has gained more attention in recent years; however, high energy input and processing cost during the production and recovery process restricted its progress. Membrane technology offers a range of energy-saving separation for product recovery and purification in biorefining along with biofuel production processes. Membrane separation techniques in combination with different biological processes increase cell concentration in the bioreactor, reduce product inhibition, decrease chemical consumption, reduce energy requirements, and further increase product concentration and productivity. Certain membrane bioreactors have evolved with the ability to deal with different biological production and separation processes to make them cost-effective, but there are certain limitations. The present review describes the advantages and limitations of membrane bioreactors to produce different biofuels with the ability to simplify upstream and downstream processes in terms of sustainability and economics.

Biological processes modelling for MBR systems: A review of the state-of-the-art focusing on SMP and EPS

A mathematical correlation between biomass kinetic and membrane fouling can improve the understanding and spread of Membrane Bioreactor (MBR) technology, especially in solving the membrane fouling issues. On this behalf, this paper, produced by the International Water Association (IWA) Task Group on Membrane modelling and control, reviews the current state-of-the-art regarding the modelling of kinetic processes of biomass, focusing on modelling production and utilization of soluble microbial products (SMP) and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS). The key findings of this work show that the new conceptual approaches focus on the role of different bacterial groups in the formation and degradation of SMP/EPS. Even though several studies have been published regarding SMP modelling, there still needs to be more information due to the highly complicated SMP nature to facilitate the accurate modelling of membrane fouling. The EPS group has seldom been addressed in the literature, probably due to the knowledge deficiency concerning the triggers for production and degradation pathways in MBR systems, which require further efforts. Finally, the successful model applications showed that proper estimation of SMP and EPS by modelling approaches could optimise membrane fouling, which can influence the MBR energy consumption, operating costs, and greenhouse gas emissions.

Nanomembranes-Affiliated Water Remediation: Chronology, Properties, Classification, Challenges and Future Prospects

Water contamination has become a global crisis, affecting millions of people worldwide and causing diseases and illnesses, including cholera, typhoid, and hepatitis A. Conventional water remediation methods have several challenges, including their inability to remove emerging contaminants and their high cost and environmental impact. Nanomembranes offer a promising solution to these challenges. Nanomembranes are thin, selectively permeable membranes that can remove contaminants from water based on size, charge, and other properties. They offer several advantages over conventional methods, including their ability to remove evolving pollutants, low functioning price, and reduced ecological influence. However, there are numerous limitations linked with the applications of nanomembranes in water remediation, including fouling and scaling, cost-effectiveness, and potential environmental impact. Researchers are working to reduce the cost of nanomembranes through the development of more cost-effective manufacturing methods and the use of alternative materials such as graphene. Additionally, there are concerns about the release of nanomaterials into the environment during the manufacturing and disposal of the membranes, and further research is needed to understand their potential impact. Despite these challenges, nanomembranes offer a promising solution for the global water crisis and could have a significant impact on public health and the environment. The current article delivers an overview on the exploitation of various engineered nanoscale substances, encompassing the carbonaceous nanomaterials, metallic, metal oxide and metal-organic frameworks, polymeric nano-adsorbents and nanomembranes, for water remediation. The article emphasizes the mechanisms involved in adsorption and nanomembrane filtration. Additionally, the authors aim to deliver an all-inclusive review on the chronology, technical execution, challenges, restrictions, reusability, and future prospects of these nanomaterials.

Landfill leachate treatment with a full-scale membrane bioreactor: impact of leachate characteristics on filamentous bacteria

Bulking and foaming are extreme filamentous bacterial growths that present serious challenges for the biological leachate treatment process. The current study evaluates the performance of long-term full-scale membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating landfill leachate, specifically focusing on filamentous bacteria overgrowth in the bioreactors. The influence of the variation in leachate structure and operational conditions on floc morphology and filamentous bacteria overgrowth were analyzed for 11 months of operation of the full-scale MBR system. The average chemical oxygen demand (COD) and NH4-N removal efficiencies of the system were 87.8 ± 4% and 99.5 ± 0.7%. However, incomplete denitrification was observed when the F/M ratio was low. The high C/N ratio was observed to enhance the frequency of small flocs. Furthermore, a poor to medium diversity of the microbial community was observed. Haliscomenobacter hydrossis, Microthrix parvicella, and Type 021N were found as the most numerous filamentous organisms. Paramecium spp., Euplotes spp., and Aspidisca spp. were found in small quantities. The limited concentration of PO4-P in the leachate compared to high COD and NH4-N concentrations most probably caused phosphate deprivation and increased abundance of identified filamentous microorganisms. This work is the first study in Türkiye that investigates the bulking and foaming problem in full-scale MBR that treats landfill leachate. Hence, it may provide some pioneering perspectives into landfill leachate remediation by monitoring the hybrid biological system.

Improvement of MBBR-MBR Performance by the Addition of Commercial and 3D-Printed Biocarriers

Moving bed biofilm reactor combined with membrane bioreactor (MBBR-MBR) constitute a highly effective wastewater treatment technology. The aim of this research work was to study the effect of commercial K1 biocarriers (MBBR-MBR K1 unit) and 3D-printed biocarriers fabricated from 13X and Halloysite (MBBR-MBR 13X-H unit), on the efficiency and the fouling rate of an MBBR-MBR unit during wastewater treatment. Various physicochemical parameters and trans-membrane pressure were measured. It was observed that in the MBBR-MBR K1 unit, membrane filtration improved reaching total membrane fouling at 43d, while in the MBBR-MBR 13X-H and in the control MBBR-MBR total fouling took place at about 32d. This is attributed to the large production of soluble microbial products (SMP) in the MBBR-MBR 13X-H, which resulted from a large amount of biofilm created in the 13X-H biocarriers. An optimal biodegradation of the organic load was concluded, and nitrification and denitrification processes were improved at the MBBR-MBR K1 and MBBR-MBR 13X-H units. The dry mass produced on the 13X-H biocarriers ranged at 4980-5711 mg, three orders of magnitude larger than that produced on the K1, which ranged at 2.9-4.6 mg. Finally, it was observed that mostly extracellular polymeric substances were produced in the biofilm of K1 biocarriers while in 13X-H mostly SMP.

A Review on Membrane Fouling Prediction Using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs)

Membrane fouling is a major hurdle to effective pressure-driven membrane processes, such as microfiltration (MF), ultrafiltration (UF), nanofiltration (NF), and reverse osmosis (RO). Fouling refers to the accumulation of particles, organic and inorganic matter, and microbial cells on the membrane's external and internal surface, which reduces the permeate flux and increases the needed transmembrane pressure. Various factors affect membrane fouling, including feed water quality, membrane characteristics, operating conditions, and cleaning protocols. Several models have been developed to predict membrane fouling in pressure-driven processes. These models can be divided into traditional empirical, mechanistic, and artificial intelligence (AI)-based models. Artificial neural networks (ANNs) are powerful tools for nonlinear mapping and prediction, and they can capture complex relationships between input and output variables. In membrane fouling prediction, ANNs can be trained using historical data to predict the fouling rate or other fouling-related parameters based on the process parameters. This review addresses the pertinent literature about using ANNs for membrane fouling prediction. Specifically, complementing other existing reviews that focus on mathematical models or broad AI-based simulations, the present review focuses on the use of AI-based fouling prediction models, namely, artificial neural networks (ANNs) and their derivatives, to provide deeper insights into the strengths, weaknesses, potential, and areas of improvement associated with such models for membrane fouling prediction.

Cadmium-treatment efficiency and membrane fouling during electrodialysis of wastewater discharged from zinc smelting

Zinc smelting wastewater contains high concentrations of Cd. Here, the treatment efficiency of Cd using electrodialysis was evaluated. In addition, scale accumulation of ion-exchange membrane (IEM) was analyzed, and fouling control was studied. The results showed that spacers effectively improved the limiting current density but accelerated foulant accumulation. The Cd-treatment efficiency improved to 85.4% without a spacer. Dissolved organic carbon (DOC) and hydrophobic DOC levels in diluted water decreased by 0.65 mg L^-1 and 2.1 mg L^-1, respectively; in contrast, hydrophilic DOC level increased by 1.45 mg L^-1. Some of the hydrophobic DOC in the diluted water was converted to hydrophilic DOC and subsequently to low-molecular-weight (LMW) DOC. DOC level in the concentrated water did not change substantially, but the LMW fraction of the hydrophilic DOC increased. In the cation-exchange membrane, a material composed of calcium sulfate accumulated in the bottom layer, and hydroxides of divalent and trivalent ions accumulated on top of it. In contrast, the anion-exchange membrane was fouled by humic substances. In terms of fouling control, physical and acid cleaning of IEMs was more effective than the reversal operation.

An Overview of Photocatalytic Membrane Degradation Development

Environmental pollution has become a worldwide issue. Rapid industrial and agricultural practices have increased organic contaminants in water supplies. Hence, many strategies have been developed to address this concern. In order to supply clean water for various applications, high-performance treatment technology is required to effectively remove organic and inorganic contaminants. Utilizing photocatalytic membrane reactors (PMRs) has shown promise as a viable alternative process in the water and wastewater industry due to its efficiency, low cost, simplicity, and low environmental impact. PMRs are commonly categorized into two main categories: those with the photocatalyst suspended in solution and those with the photocatalyst immobilized in/on a membrane. Herein, the working and fouling mechanisms in PMRs membranes are investigated; the interplay of fouling and photocatalytic activity and the development of fouling prevention strategies are elucidated; and the significance of photocatalysis in membrane fouling mechanisms such as pore plugging and cake layering is thoroughly explored.

Membrane separation of antibiotics predicted with the back propagation neural network

Antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) have been frequently detected in the aquatic environment and are regarded as emerging pollutants. The prediction models for the removal effect of four target antibiotics by membrane separation technology were constructed based on back propagation neural network (BPNN) through training the input and output. The membrane separation tests of antibiotics showed that the removal effect of microfiltration on azithromycin and ciprofloxacin was better, basically above 80%. For sulfamethoxazole (SMZ) and tetracycline (TC), ultrafiltration and nanofiltration had better removal effects. There was a strong correlation between the concentrations of SMZ and TC in the permeate, and the R2 of the training and validation processes exceeded 0.9. The stronger the correlation between the input layer variables and the prediction target was, the better the prediction performances of the BPNN model than the nonlinear model and the unscented Kalman filter model were. These results showed that the established BPNN prediction model could better simulate the removal of target antibiotics by membrane separation technology. The model could be used to predict and explore the influence of external conditions on membrane separation technology and provide a certain basis for the application of the BPNN model in environmental protection.

New insights into membrane fouling during direct membrane filtration of municipal wastewater and fouling control with mechanical strategies

Direct membrane filtration (DMF) technology achieves energy self-sufficiency through carbon recovery and utilization from municipal wastewater. To control its severe membrane fouling and improve DMF technology, targeted research on fouling behaviour and mechanisms is essential. In this study, a DMF reactor equipped with a flat-sheet ceramic membrane was conducted under three scenarios: without control, with intermittent aeration, and with periodic backwash. This system achieved efficient carbon concentration with chemical oxygen demand below 50 mg/L in permeate. Membrane fouling was dominated by intermediate blocking and cake filtration. And reversible external resistance accounted for over 85 % of total resistance. Predominant membrane foulants were free proteins, whose deposition underlies the attachment of cells and biopolymers. Backwash decreased the fouling rate and increased fouling layer porosity by indiscriminately detaching foulants from the membrane surface. While aeration enhanced the back transport of large particles and microbial activity, causing a relatively thin and dense fouling layer containing more microorganisms and β-d-glucopyranose polysaccharides, which implies a higher biofouling potential during long-term operation. In addition, aeration combined with backwash enhanced fouling control fivefold over either one alone. Therefore, simultaneous operation of backwash and other mechanical methods that can provide shear without stimulating aerobic microbial activity is a preferred strategy for minimizing membrane fouling during DMF of municipal wastewater.

A new insight into the low membrane fouling tendency of liquid-liquid hollow fiber membrane contactor capturing ammonia from human urine

To unravel the low membrane fouling tendency and underlying membrane fouling mechanism of liquid-liquid hollow fiber membrane contactor (LL-HFMC) capturing ammonia from human urine, the ammonia flux decline trend, membrane fouling propensity, foulant-membrane thermodynamic interaction energy and microscale force analysis at different feed urine pH were comprehensively investigated. The 21-d continuous experiments showed that the ammonia flux decline trend and membrane fouling propensity significantly strengthened with the decrease of feed urine pH. The calculated foulant-membrane thermodynamic interaction energy decreased with the decreasing feed urine pH and agreed with the ammonia flux decline trend and membrane fouling propensity. The microscale force analysis showed that the absence of hydrodynamic water permeate drag force resulted in the foulant located at long distance from the membrane were difficult to approach the membrane surface, thus considerably alleviating membrane fouling. Additionally, the vital thermodynamic attractive force near the membrane surface increased with the decrease of feed urine pH, which made the membrane fouling further relieved at high pH condition. Therefore, the absence of water permeate drag force and operating at high pH condition minimized the membrane fouling during the LL-HFMC ammonia capture process. The obtained results provide a new insight into the low membrane tendency mechanism of LL-HFMC.

Enhanced membrane fouling control through self-forming dynamic membrane and sponge-wrapped membrane: A novel membrane bioreactor

Membrane technology offers a wide variety of advantages in wastewater treatment, but fouling impedes its widespread applications. Hence, in this study, a novel method was tried to control membrane fouling by combining the self-forming dynamic membrane (SFDM) with a sponge-wrapped membrane bioreactor. The configuration is termed a "Novel-membrane bioreactor" (Novel-MBR). To compare the performance of Novel-MBR, a conventional membrane bioreactor (CMBR) was operated under similar operating conditions. CMBR and Novel-MBR were run consequently for 60 and 150 days, respectively. The Novel-MBR was composed of SFDMs in two compartments before a sponge-wrapped membrane in the membrane compartment. In Novel-MBR, the formation times for SFDMs on coarse (125 μm) and fine (37 μm) pore cloth filers were 43 and 13 min, respectively. The CMBR experienced more frequent fouling; the maximum fouling rate was 5.83 kPa/day. In CMBR, the membrane fouling due to cake layer resistance (6.92 × 10¹²  m^-1 ) was high, and that alone contributed to 84% of fouling. In Novel-MBR, the fouling rate was 0.0266 kPa/day, and the cake layer resistance was 0.329 × 10¹²  m^-1 . Also, the Novel-MBR experienced 21 times less reversible fouling and 36 times less irreversible fouling resistance than the CMBR. In Novel-MBR, the formed SFDM and the sponge wrapped on the membrane helped to reduce both reversible and irreversible fouling. With the modification tried in the present study, the Novel-MBR experienced less fouling, and the maximum transmembrane pressure at the end of 150 days of operation was 4 kPa. PRACTITIONER POINTS: CMBR experienced frequent fouling, and the maximum fouling rate was 5.83 kPa/day. Cake layer resistance was dominant in CMBR and contributed to 84% of fouling. The fouling rate of Novel-MBR at the end of the operation was 0.0266 kPa/day. Novel-MBR is expected to perform for ≈3380 days to reach the maximum TMP of 35 kPa.

Effects of biochar addition towards the treatment of blackwater in anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR): Comparison among room temperature, mesophilic and thermophilic conditions

Effects of biochar addition on the performance of anaerobic dynamic membrane bioreactor (AnDMBR) under different temperatures for blackwater treatment was investigated. When the organic load ratios (OLR) was 1.0 g COD/L·d, the specific methane yield for the three biochar-amended reactors were 125.7, 148.0 and 182.3 mLCH₄/g COD_removed, respectively. Compare to those digesters without biochar participation, the methane production in the thermophilic reactor with biochar increased by 12% while the other two digesters increased by 6-10%. An analysis of membrane filtration resistance showed a reduction in total resistance (R_t) of 6.2 × 10¹¹-7.3 × 10¹¹ m^-1 when biochar was added to the three reactors. The thermophilic reactors with biochar increased the relative abundance of Methanothermobacter and promoted gene expression of metabolic pathways related to hydrolysis, acid production and methane production. Overall, biochar showed great potential as an inexpensive conductive material to increase methane production with reduced membrane fouling in AnDMBR systems.

Performance and mechanism of microbial fuel cell coupled with anaerobic membrane bioreactor system for fouling control

To remove membrane fouling, a bio-electrochemical system that can generate a micro-electric field and micro-current was constructed. After 11 days of operation, the trans-membrane pressure difference of membrane modules in the open- and closed-circuit groups increased by 35.8 kPa and 6.2 kPa, respectively. The concentrations of total polysaccharide and protein in the open-circuit group were 1.8 and 1.1 times higher than those in the closed-circuit group, respectively. In addition, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and thermogravimetric analysis showed that inorganic crystals such as calcium carbonate were present on the membrane surface, and the concentration of calcium ion in the control group was 14.7 times that of the experimental group. High-throughput sequencing demonstrated that the enrichment of some electroactive bacteria and other microorganisms has a positive effect on the control of membrane fouling. Therefore, this system can effectively alleviate membrane fouling of a bioreactor, by targeting the membrane foulants.

In-situ membrane fouling control and performance improvement by adding materials in anaerobic membrane bioreactor: A review

Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is a promising treatment technique for various types of wastewaters, and is preferred over other conventional aerobic and anaerobic methods. However, membrane fouling is considered a bottleneck in AnMBR system, which technically blocks membrane pores by numerous inorganics, organics, and other microbial substances. Various materials can be added in AnMBR to control membrane fouling and improve anaerobic digestion, and studies reporting the materials addition for this purpose are hereby systematically reviewed. The mechanism of membrane fouling control including compositional changes in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and soluble microbial products (SMPs), materials properties, stimulation of antifouling microbes and alteration in substrate properties by material addition are thoroughly discussed. Nonetheless, this study opens up new research prospects to control membrane fouling of AnMBR, engineered by material, including compositional changes of microbial products (EPS and SMP), replacement of quorum quenching (QQ) by materials, and overall improvement of reactor performance. Regardless of the great research progress achieved previously in membrane fouling control, there is still a long way to go for material-mediated AnMBR applications to be undertaken, particularly for materials coupling, real scale application and molecular based studies on EPSs and SMPs, which were proposed for future researches.

Biotransformation of sulfamonomethoxine in a granular sludge system: Pathways and mechanisms

The biotransformation of sulfamonomethoxine (SMM) was studied in an aerobic granular sludge (AGS) system to understand the role of sorption by microbial cells and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) and the role of functional microbe/enzyme biodegradation. Biodegradation played a more important role than adsorption, while microbial cells covered with tightly bound EPS (TB-EPS) showed higher adsorption capacity than microbial cells themselves or microbial cells covered with both loosely bound EPS (LB-EPS) and TB-EPS. The binding tests between EPS and SMM and the spectroscopic analyses (3D-EEM, UV-Vis, and FTIR) were performed to obtain more information about the adsorption process. The data showed that SMM could interact with EPS by combining with aromatic protein compounds, fulvic acid-like substances, protein amide II, and nucleic acids. Batch tests with various substances showed that SMM removal rates were in an order of NH₂OH (60.43 ± 2.21 μg/g SS) > NH₄Cl (52.96 ± 0.30 μg/g SS) > NaNO₃ (31.88 ± 1.20 μg/g SS) > NaNO₂ (21.80 ± 0.42 μg/g SS). Hydroxylamine and hydroxylamine oxidoreductase (HAO) favored SMM biotransformation and the hydroxylamine-mediated biotransformation of SMM was more effective than others. In addition, both ammonia monooxygenase (AMO) and CYP450 were able to co-metabolize SMM. Analysis of UPLC-QTOF-MS indicated the biotransformation mechanisms, revealing that acetylation of arylamine, glucuronidation of sulfonamide, deamination, SO₂ extrusion, and δ cleavage were the five major transformation pathways. The detection of TP202 in the hydroxylamine-fed Group C indicated a new biotransformation pathway through HAO. This study contributes to a better understanding of the biotransformation of SMM.

Enhanced methane production from anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge by combining ultrasound with potassium permanganate pretreatment

The influence of ultrasound (US) and potassium permanganate (KMnO₄) co-pretreatment on anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge (WAS) was investigated in this survey. Results showed that KMnO₄ (0.3 g/g TSS) cooperated with US (1 W/mL, 15 min) pretreatment significantly increased the cumulative methane yield to 174.44 ± 3.65 mL/g VS compared to the control group (108.72 ± 2.56 mL/g VS), solo US (125.39 ± 2.56 mL/g VS), and solo KMnO₄ pretreatment group (160.83 ± 1.61 mL/g VS). Mechanistic investigation revealed that US combined with KMnO₄ pretreatment effectively disrupted the structure of extracellular polymeric substances and cell walls by generating reactive radicals, accelerating the release of organics and hydrolytic enzymes as well as improving the biodegradability of soluble organics. Modeling analysis illustrated that the biochemical methane potential and hydrolysis rate of WAS were enhanced under US + KMnO₄ pretreatment. Microbial community distribution indicated that the co-pretreatment of US and KMnO₄ elevated the total relative abundance of functional microorganisms associated with anaerobic digestion (22.01 %) compared to the control (10.69 %), US alone (12.24 %) and KMnO₄ alone (16.20 %).

Recent developments in anammox-based membrane bioreactors: A review

The anammox-based process has been considered a promising biological nitrogen elimination method for the treatment of nitrogen-rich wastewater ever since its discovery 40 years ago. However, the slow growth rate of anammox bacteria and severe sludge washout result in a long startup period and limit its widespread industrial application. A membrane bioreactor (MBR) is considered an ideal reactor for the operation of the anammox-based process because the membranes allow for 100 % biomass retention. According to a systematic review of the literature, anammox-based MBR is becoming a research hotspot in the field of nitrogen wastewater treatment. The fundamental understanding of anammox-based MBR and its membrane fouling situation is essential for the development and application of anammox-based MBR. In this paper, the application of MBR in different kinds of anammox process are reviewed. The membrane fouling mechanism and strategies to control membrane fouling are also proposed. It is expected that this review will serve as an invaluable guide for future research and in the engineering applications of anammox-based MBR process.

Electron microscopic imaging and NanoSIMS investigation on physiological responses of Aspergillus niger under Pb(II) and Cd(II) stress

In the bioremediation process, coexistence of lead (Pb) and cadmium causes complex toxicity, resulting in the difficulty of bioremediation. This study investigated the physiological responses and bioaccumulation mechanisms of the typical filamentous fungus Aspergillus niger under the coexistence of Pb and Cd. Four treatments were set up, i.e., control, sole Pb, sole Cd, and coexistence of Pb and Cd. The morphology of A. niger were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM), respectively. Then, nano-scale secondary ion mass spectrometry (NanoSIMS) was applied to accurately investigate the distribution of heavy metals in the fungal cells under the coexistence of Pb and Cd. Finally, the metallogenic process and mineral types were simulated by Geochemist's Workbench (GWB). The electron microscopic and NanoSIMS imaging showed that Pb and Cd were accumulated in both the extracellular and intracellular regions of the A. niger cells. In particular, the accumulated Pb content was ten times higher than that of Cd. However, Cd showed stronger toxicity than Pb to A. niger. Compared with the control treatment, Cd stress resulted in a two-fold increase of cell diameter and more extracellular substances, whereas the cell diameter increased nearly four times in the coexistence treatment. Moreover, the bioaccumulation of Pb was more intense than that of Cd during competitive sorption. The GWB simulation confirmed that Pb²⁺ can form multiple minerals (e.g., PbC₂O₄, PbHPO₄, and Pb₃(PO₄)₂, etc.), which significantly weakened its toxicity on the cell surface. This study elucidated the morphological characteristics of A. niger and competitive bioaccumulation under the coexistence of Pb and Cd, which would facilitate the application of microorganisms to the bioremediation of coexisted metals.

Molecular insights into impacts of EDTMPA on membrane fouling caused by transparent exopolymer particles (TEP)

While ethylenediamine tetramethylenephosphonic acid (EDTMPA) has been emerged as a stronger chelating agent than ethylene diamine tetraacetic acid (EDTA) for fouling mitigation, and transparent exopolymer particles (TEP) is a major foulant in membrane-based water treatment process, effects of EDTMPA on TEP fouling and the underlying mechanism have been not yet studied. In this study, Flory-Huggins lattice theory was combined with density functional theory (DFT) technology to explore this subject at molecular level. Filtration experiments showed a unimodal pattern of specific filtration resistance (SFR) of TEP sample with Ca²⁺ concentration in range of 0-3 mM. For the TEP sample with the peak SFR value at 1.5 mM Ca²⁺, continuous addition of EDTMPA (from 0 to 100 mg·L^-1) resulted in a sustained decrease in SFR. Energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) mapping characterization showed the continuing decline of calcium content in the TEP layer with increase of EDTMPA addition, indicating that EDTMPA successfully captured Ca²⁺ from alginate‑calcium ligation (TEP), and then disintegrated the TEP structure. DFT simulation showed that Ca²⁺ preferentially coordinated with the terminal carboxyl groups of alginate chains to form a coordination configuration that is conducive to stretch the three-dimensional polymer network. Such a network corresponded to an extremely high SFR according to Flory-Huggins theory. EDTMPA addition caused disintegration of the coordination configuration of Ca²⁺ binding to terminal carboxyl groups, which further resulted in collapse and flocculation of TEP gel network structure, thus leading to a continuous SFR decrease. This work provided deep thermodynamic insights into effects of EDTMPA on TEP-associated fouling at molecular level, facilitating to better understanding and mitigation of membrane fouling.

Characterization of Biofilm Microbiome Formation Developed on Novel 3D-Printed Zeolite Biocarriers during Aerobic and Anaerobic Digestion Processes

Background: Aerobic or anaerobic digestion is involved in treating agricultural and municipal waste, and the addition of biocarriers has been proven to improve them further. We synthesized novel biocarriers utilizing zeolites and different inorganic binders and compared their efficiency with commercially available biocarriers in aerobic and anaerobic digestion systems. Methods: We examined BMP and several physicochemical parameters to characterize the efficiency of novel biocarriers on both systems. We also determined the SMP and EPS content of synthesized biofilm and measured the adherence and size of the forming biofilm. Finally, we characterized the samples by 16S rRNA sequencing to determine the crucial microbial communities involved. Results: Evaluating BMP results, ZSM-5 zeolite with bentonite binder emerged, whereas ZSM-5 zeolite with halloysite nanotubes binder stood out in the wastewater treatment experiment. Twice the relative frequencies of archaea were found on novel biocarriers after being placed in AD batch reactors, and >50% frequencies of Proteobacteria after being placed in WWT reactors, compared to commercial ones. Conclusions: The newly synthesized biocarriers were not only equally efficient with the commercially available ones, but some were even superior as they greatly enhanced aerobic or anaerobic digestion and showed strong biofilm formation and unique microbiome signatures.
