Adaptive Responses of Marine Gastropods to Heatwaves

Bivalves under extreme weather events: A comparative study of five economically important species in the South China sea during marine heatwaves

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are increasing in frequency and intensity, threatening marine organisms and ecosystems they support. Yet, little is known about impacts of intensifying MHWs on ecologically and economically important bivalves cultured in the South China Sea. Here, we compared survival and physiological responses of five bivalve species, Pinctada fucata, Crassostrea angulata, Perna viridis, Argopecten irradians and Paphia undulata, to two consecutive MHWs events (3 days of thermal exposure to + 4 °C or + 8 °C, following 3 days of recovery under ambient conditions). While P. fucata, P. viridis, and P. undulata are native to the South China Sea region, C. angulata and A. irradians are not. Individuals of P. fucata, C. angulata and P. viridis had higher stress tolerance to MHWs than A. irradians and P. undulata, the latter already experiencing 100% mortality under +8 °C conditions during the first event. With increasing intensity of MHWs, standard metabolic rates of all five species increased significantly, in line with significant depressions of function-related energy-metabolizing enzymes (CMA, NKA, and T-ATP). Likewise, activities of antioxidant enzymes (SOD, CAT, and MDA) and shell mineralization-related enzymes (AKP and ACP) responded significantly to MHWs, despite species-specific performances observed. These findings demonstrate that some bivalve species can likely fail to accommodate intensifying MHWs events in the South China Sea, but some may persist. If this is the case, then one would expect substantial loss of fitness in bivalve aquaculture in the South China Sea under intensifying MHWs conditions.

Exploring the Heat-Responsive miRNAs and their Target Gene Regulation in Ruditapes philippinarum Under Acute Heat Stress

This study aimed to investigate the inherent molecular regulatory mechanisms of Ruditapes philippinarum in response to extremely high-temperature environments and to enhance the sustainable development of the R. philippinarum aquaculture industry. In this study, we established a differential expression profile of miRNA under acute heat stress and identified a total of 46 known miRNAs and 80 novel miRNAs, three of which were detected to be significantly differentially expressed. We analyzed the functions of target genes regulated by differentially expressed miRNAs (DEMs) of R. philippinarum. The findings of the KEGG enrichment analysis revealed that 29 enriched pathways in the group were subjected to acute heat stress. Notably, fatty acid metabolism, FoxO signaling pathway, TGF-β signaling pathway, and ubiquitin-mediated proteolysis were found to play significant roles in response to acute heat stress. We established a regulatory map of DEMs and their target genes in response to heat stress and constructed the miRNA-mRNA regulation network. This study provides valuable insights into the response of R. philippinarum to high temperature, helping to understand its underlying molecular regulatory mechanisms under high-temperature stress.

Kelp holdfast microclimates buffer invertebrate inhabitants from extreme temperatures

Climate change is altering environmental conditions, with microclimates providing small-scale refuges within otherwise challenging environments. Durvillaea (southern bull kelp; rimurapa) is a genus of large intertidal fucoid algae, and some species harbour diverse invertebrate communities in their holdfasts. We hypothesised that animal-excavated Durvillaea holdfasts provide a thermal refuge for epibiont species, and tested this hypothesis using the exemplar species D. poha. Using a southern Aotearoa New Zealand population as a case-study, we found extreme temperatures outside the holdfast were 4.4 °C higher in summer and 6.9 °C lower in winter than inside the holdfast. A microclimate model of the holdfasts was built and used to forecast microclimates under 2100 conditions. Temperatures are predicted to increase by 2-3 °C, which may exceed the tolerances of D. poha. However, if D. poha or a similar congeneric persists, temperatures inside holdfasts will remain less extreme than the external environment. The thermal tolerances of two Durvillaea-associated invertebrates, the trochid gastropod Cantharidus antipodum and the amphipod Parawaldeckia kidderi, were also assessed; C. antipodum, but not P. kidderi, displayed metabolic depression at temperatures above and below those inside holdfasts, suggesting that they would be vulnerable outside the holdfast and with future warming. Microclimates, such as those within D. poha holdfasts or holdfasts of similar species, will therefore be important refuges for the survival of species both at the northern (retreating edge) and southern (expanding edge) limits of their distributions.

Reductive stress and cytotoxicity in the swollen river mussel (Unio tumidus) exposed to microplastics and salinomycin

Multistress effects lead to unpredicted consequences in aquatic ecotoxicology and are extremely concerning. The goal of this study was to trace how specific effects of the antibiotic salinomycin (Sal) and microplastics (MP) on the bivalve molluscs are manifested in the combined environmentally relevant exposures. Unio tumidus specimens were treated with Sal (0.6 μg L-1), MP (1 mg L-1, 2 μm size), and both at 18 °C (Mix) and 25 °C (MixT) for 14 days. The redox stress and apoptotic enzyme responses and the balance of Zn/Cu in the digestive gland were analyzed. The shared signs of stress included a decrease in NAD+/NADH and Zn/Cu ratios and lysosomal integrity and an increase in Zn-metallothioneins and cholinesterase levels. MP caused a decrease in the glutathione (GSH) concentration and redox state, total antioxidant capacity, and Zn levels. MP and Mix induced coordinated apoptotic/autophagy activities, increasing caspase-3 and cathepsin D (CtD) total and extralysosomal levels. Sal activated caspase-3 only and increased by five times Cu level in the tissue. Due to the discriminant analysis, the cumulative effect was evident in the combined exposure at 18 °C. However, under heating, the levels of NAD+, NADH, GSH, GSH/GSSG and metallothionein-related thiols were decreased, and coordination of the cytosolic and lysosomal death stimuli was distorted, confirming that heating and pollution could exert unexpected synergistic effects on aquatic life.

Effect of marine heatwaves on juvenile greater amberjack (Seriola dumerili)

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) have increased in frequency, intensity, and duration in recent years causing significant impacts on marine organisms and fisheries. This study explores the physiological changes of juvenile greater amberjacks (Seriola dumerili) that cope with MHWs. Results showed that physiological parameters were significantly affected by the intensity, duration of MHWs or interaction of two factors (P < 0.05). Repeated MHWs in which water temperatures were increased (24 °C to 28 °C and 32 °C) resulted in changes in enzyme activity levels (catalase (CAT), superoxide dismutase (SOD), and glutathione (GSH)), as well as the level of malondialdehyde (MDA) for antioxidant defense, immune function (acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (ALP), and lysozyme (LYZ)), and energy metabolism (including triglycerides (TG), glucose (GLU), aspartate aminotransferase (GOT), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), and succinate dehydrogenase (SDH)). The activities of enzymes, including those associated with antioxidant defense, immune function, and energy metabolism, changed significantly in relation to short-term MHWs, indicating a thermal stress response. When S. dumerili were exposed to repeated-MHWs, thermal stress responses increased at 28 °C (T28) and decreased at 32 °C (T32). These results exhibited the inability of S. dumerili to acclimate to severe thermal stress from MHWs. This study examined S. dumerili responses to MHWs and assessed the physiological adaptation of juvenile greater amberjacks to MHWs.

Behavioural and physiological responses of juvenile geoduck (Panopea zelandica) following acute thermal stress

Climate extremes, such as heatwaves, are expected to become more intense and of longer duration in the near future. These climatic conditions may have a significant impact on the prospects of establishing a new aquaculture industry for the endemic New Zealand geoduck, Panopea zelandica. This study focused on characterising animal behaviour, haemocytes , and heat shock protein (HSP70 & HSP90) mRNA expression following exposure to elevated temperatures, such as those encountered during marine heatwaves around 20 °C and an extreme scenario of 25 °C, contrasted to an ambient temperature of 17 °C. After 24 h of heat challenge, P. zelandica were found to be significantly influenced by the thermal changes, as there were differences recorded in all the responses examined. With increasing temperatures, juvenile geoduck were observed to fully emerge from the sediment a behaviour that has not previously been quantified nor associated with stress in this species. The ability of P. zelandica juveniles to re-bury still warrants further investigation, as adults are unable to do so. Haemocyte analyses revealed an increase in the abundance of granulocytes, cellular aggregations, and size of these aggregations at the highest temperature exposure. Increased expression of the hsp70 gene in the haemolymph after exposure at 25 °C for 24 h was detected and attributed to attempts to mitigate protein denaturation caused by thermal stress. The inter-individual variability in the response of heat shock proteins recorded could aid in future selective breeding programs if it is reflected in net thermotolerance. P. zelandica shows great potential for growing in subtidal habitats around New Zealand, and this study highlights the importance of temperature considerations when selecting potential farm and reseeding locations.

Effects of heatwave events on the seagrass-dwelling crustacean Pandalus latirostris in a subarctic lagoon

Heatwaves often cause mass mortality of organisms in seagrass areas, and they eventually alter some ecological functions of seagrass ecosystems. In subarctic regions, however, the effects of heatwaves on seagrass areas are still unclear. In a subarctic lagoon of northern Japan, we examined the effects of heatwaves on the Hokkai shrimp, Pandalus latirostris, a commercially exploited species distributed in seagrass areas of northern Japan and eastern Russia. A long-term survey of the surface water temperature in the lagoon clarified a gradual increase in the frequency and intensity of heatwave events since 1999. Surveys of the water temperature at a seagrass area in the lagoon during summer have also demonstrated that the maximum water temperature had been exceeding 25 °C, unusually high for this location, regardless of water depth. These results indicate that the effects of heatwaves in seagrass areas in a subarctic region had become as severe as those in tropical and temperate regions. We also experimentally evaluated the effects of this unusually high water temperature (25 °C) on the survival of P. latirostris by changing the length of exposure time. Some individuals suffered damage to their intestinal mucosal structure after exposure for 12 h or longer, and all individuals died after exposure for 120 h. Our results suggest that heatwaves possibly cause mass mortality in P. latirostris in the following sequence: heat stress, damage to the intestinal epithelial mucosal structure, degradation of nutrient absorption and immunological function of the intestine, energy deficiency and disease infection, and finally mortality. This study, conducted in subarctic closed waters, concludes that it is essential to become familiar with not only trends in heatwaves but also the intermittent occurrence of unusually high water temperature in seagrass areas in order to better understand the process of mortality of organisms that inhabit these ecosystems.

The effect of simulated marine heatwaves on green-lipped mussels, Perna canaliculus: A near-natural experimental approach

Marine heatwaves (MHW) are projected for the foreseeable future, affecting aquaculture species, such as the New Zealand green-lipped mussel (Perna canaliculus). Thermal stress alters mussel physiology highlighting the adaptive capacity that allows survival in the face of heatwaves. Within this study, adult mussels were subjected to three different seawater temperature regimes: 1) low (sustained 18 °C), 2) medium MHW (18-24 °C, using a +1 °C per week ramp) and 3) high MHW (18-24 °C, using a +2 °C per week ramp). Sampling was performed over 11 weeks to establish the effects of temperature on P. canaliculus survival, condition, specific immune response parameters, and the haemolymph metabolome. A transient 25.5-26.5 °C exposure resulted in 61 % mortality, with surviving animals showing a metabolic adjustment within aerobic energy production, enabling the activation of molecular defence mechanisms. Utilisation of immune functions were seen within the cytology results where temperature stress affected the percentage of superoxide-positive haemocytes and haemocyte counts. From the metabolomics results an increase in antioxidant metabolites were seen in the high MHW survivors, possibly to counteract molecular damage. In the high MHW exposure group, mussels utilised anaerobic metabolism in conjunction with aerobic metabolism to produce energy, to uphold biological functions and survival. The effect of exposure time was mainly seen on very long-, and long chain fatty acids, with increases observed at weeks seven and eight. These changes were likely due to the membrane storage functions of fatty acids, with decreases at week eleven attributed to energy metabolism functions. This study supports the use of integrated analytical tools to investigate the response of marine organisms to heatwaves. Indeed, specific metabolic pathways and cellular markers are now highlighted for future investigations aimed at targeted measures. This research contributes to a larger program aimed to identify resilient mussel traits and support aquaculture management.

Physiological and biochemical responses of clams to recurrent marine heatwaves

In the past decade, the frequency, intensity and duration of marine heatwaves (MHWs) in the South China Sea have been increasing strikingly, resulting in serious impacts on intertidal bivalves and their ecosystems. The Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, is one of the most ecologically and economically important bivalve species in the South China Sea, yet very little is known about its fate under intensifying MHWs events. Here, we examined how R. philippinarum responded to two consecutive scenarios of MHWs, with each composed of 4 °C and 8 °C rises of seawater temperatures, respectively. Up to 87% of Manila clams survived recurrent MHWs events, and significant increases in standard metabolic rate occurred predominantly under extreme conditions (+8 °C), indicating that the clams could trigger compensatory mechanisms to mitigate MHWs-induced thermal stress. Following acute and repeated exposures to MHWs, Manila clams showed similar responses in enzymes underpinning energy metabolism (NKA, CMA, and T-ATP), antioxidant defence (SOD, CAT, and MDA), and biomineralization (AKP and ACP), most of which exhibited significantly increasing and then decreasing trends with the intensification of MHWs. Of eight genes associated with physiological tolerance and fitness, ATAD3A, PFK, SOD, and C3 were significantly down-regulated in response to recurrent MHWs events, demonstrating the certain resistance to MHWs. These findings provide a better understanding that marine bivalves hold the potential to acclimate simulated MHWs events from the physiological and molecular processes.

Survival and physiological energetics of highly invasive mussels exposed to heatwaves

The South American mussel, Mytella strigata, is a highly invasive fouling species of great concern along intertidal shores in East and Southeast Asia, posing serious threats to native biodiversity and ecosystems. Intertidal areas, being increasingly attacked by heatwaves over the last decade, are among the most thermally challenging habitats, yet the fate of this highly invasive mussel under scenarios of hotter heatwaves remains unknown. Here, we investigated how M. strigata responded to intensifying heatwaves frequently occurring in the South China Sea. Over 97% of individuals survived the five-day-lasting heatwaves, suggesting their high ability to cope with short-term heatwaves. Virtually unaffected clearance rate and absorption efficiency throughout the course of heatwaves indicate the maintenance of energy acquisition, and significantly decreased respiration rate implies the depression of energy metabolism, generating significant decreases in the O:N ratio when heatwaves occurred. Scope for growth of heatwaves-stressed mussels significantly decreased during initial exposure and then increased over time. These findings indicate the remarkable ability of M. strigata to cope with heatwaves recorded in its invasive habitats and call the attention for the rapid spread of this highly invasive fouling species in the context of climate change.

Combined effect of microplastic, salinomycin and heating on Unio tumidus

Microplastic (MP) and heating (T) suspected to modulate biological effects of aquatic contaminants. Salinomycin (Sal) is veterinary antibiotic and anticancer agent. The goal of this study was to examine the multistress effect of MP, Sal and T on the bioindicator bivalve mollusc. The Unio tumidus were treated with MP (1 mg L^-1), Sal (0.6 µg L^-1), their combination under 18° C (Mix) and 25° C (MixT) for 14 days. The digestive glands were analyzed. MP and Sal did not cause changes of Mn- and Cu,Zn-SOD, lipid peroxidation and Cyp-450-depended EROD levels, whereas catalase, GST and protein carbonyls (Sal-group) increased compared to control. In the Mix-group, enzymes, particularly EROD and GST (by 34% and 115% respectively) were up-regulated. However, in the MixT-group, they were corresponding to control or lesser (EROD, catalase). Our findings emphasize the need to take into account multistress interactions in the MP environmental risk assessment.

Impacts of marine heatwaves on byssus production in highly invasive fouling mussels

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are projected to increase in their frequency, intensity, and duration, causing irreversible and catastrophic consequences for intertidal ecosystems around the world. The highly invasive fouling mussel, Arcuatula senhousia, can cause marked habitat alteration by constructing extremely intense byssal mats, devastating the biodiversity of many intertidal systems, yet very little is known about its fate under conditions of more frequent, hotter and longer MHWs. Here, we assessed impacts of two scenarios of MHWs (low-intensity with 4 °C rise of seawater temperature and high-intensity with 8 °C rise, respectively) on the byssal production of A. senhousia. Mussels exposed to low-intensity MHWs did not show any significant differences in the number, length and diameter of byssal threads, compared with those not thermally stressed. Under high-intensity scenario, the byssus production was significantly depressed, and byssal threads became fewer, shorter and finer, in line with significant decreases in cumulative length and volume. These findings provide a better understanding of responses of invasive fouling mussels such as A. senhousia to MHWs and make a leap forward in linking climate change and biological fouling in marine ecosystems.

Shell color polymorphism in marine gastropods

Marine gastropods are characterized by an incredible variation in shell color. In this review, we aim to introduce researchers to previous studies of shell color polymorphism in this group of animals, trying to provide an overview of the topic and highlighting some potential avenues for future research. For this, we tackle the different aspects of shell color polymorphism in marine gastropods: its biochemical and genetic basis, its patterns of spatial and temporal distribution, as well as its potential evolutionary causes. In particular, we put special emphasis on the evolutionary studies that have been conducted so far to reveal the evolutionary mechanisms responsible for the maintenance of shell color polymorphism in this group of animals, as it constitutes the least addressed aspect in existing literature reviews. Several general conclusions can be drawn from our review: First, natural selection is commonly involved in the maintenance of gastropod color polymorphism; second, although the contribution of neutral forces (gene flow-genetic drift equilibrium) to shell color polymorphism maintenance do not seem to be particularly important, it has rarely been studied systematically; third, a relationship between shell color polymorphism and mode of larval development (related to dispersal capability) may exist. As for future studies, we suggest that a combination of both classical laboratory crossing experiments and -Omics approaches may yield interesting results on the molecular basis of color polymorphism. We believe that understanding the various causes of shell color polymorphism in marine gastropods is of great importance not only to understand how biodiversity works, but also for protecting such biodiversity, as knowledge of its evolutionary causes may help implement conservation measures in those species or ecosystems that are threatened.

Marine heatwaves and upwelling shape stress responses in a keystone predator

Climate change increases the frequency and intensifies the magnitude and duration of extreme events in the sea, particularly so in coastal habitats. However, the interplay of multiple extremes and the consequences for species and ecosystems remain unknown. We experimentally tested the impacts of summer heatwaves of differing intensities and durations, and a subsequent upwelling event on a temperate keystone predator, the starfish Asterias rubens. We recorded mussel consumption throughout the experiment and assessed activity and growth at strategically chosen time points. The upwelling event overall impaired starfish feeding and activity, likely driven by the acidification and low oxygen concentrations in the upwelled seawater. Prior exposure to a present-day heatwave (+5°C above climatology) alleviated upwelling-induced stress, indicating cross-stress tolerance. Heatwaves of present-day intensity decreased starfish feeding and growth. While the imposed heatwaves of limited duration (9 days) caused slight impacts but allowed for recovery, the prolonged (13 days) heatwave impaired overall growth. Projected future heatwaves (+8°C above climatology) caused 100% mortality of starfish. Our findings indicate a positive ecological memory imposed by successive stress events. Yet, starfish populations may still suffer extensive mortality during intensified end-of-century heatwave conditions.

Transcriptomic responses reveal impaired physiological performance of the pearl oyster following repeated exposure to marine heatwaves

Marine heatwaves are predicted to become more intense and frequent in the future, possibly threatening the survival of marine organisms and devastating their communities. While recent evidence reveals the adaptability of marine organisms to heatwaves, substantially overlooked is whether they can also adjust to repeated heatwave exposure, which can occur in nature. By analysing transcriptome, we examined the fitness and recoverability of the pearl oyster (Pinctada maxima) after two consecutive heatwaves (24 °C to 32 °C for 3 days; recovery at 24 °C for 4 days). In the first heatwave, 331 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were found, such as AGE-RAGE, MAPK, JAK-STAT, FoxO and mTOR. Despite the recovery after the first heatwave, 2511 DEGs related to energy metabolism, body defence, cell proliferation and biomineralization were found, where 1655 of them were downregulated, suggesting a strong negative response to the second heatwave. Our findings imply that some marine organisms can indeed tolerate heatwaves by boosting energy metabolism to support molecular defence, cell proliferation and biomineralization, but this capacity can be overwhelmed by repeated exposure to heatwaves. Since recurrence of heatwaves within a short period of time is predicted to be more prevalent in the future, the functioning of marine ecosystems would be disrupted if marine organisms fail to accommodate repeated extreme thermal stress.

Assessing the impact of atmospheric heatwaves on intertidal clams

Heatwaves have become more frequent and intense in the last two decades, resulting in detrimental effects on marine bivalves and ecosystems they sustain. Intertidal clams inhabit the most physiologically challenging habitats in coastal areas and live already near their thermal tolerance limits. However, whether and to what extent atmospheric heatwaves affect intertidal bivalves remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated physiological responses of the Manila clam, Ruditapes philippinarum, to heatwaves at air temperature regimes of 40 °C and 50 °C occurring frequently and occasionally at the present day in the Beibu Gulf, South China Sea. With the increasing intensity of heatwaves and following only two days of aerial exposure, Manila clams suffered 100 % mortality at 50 °C, indicating that they succumb to near future heatwaves, although they survived under various scenarios of moderate heatwaves. The latter is couched in energetic terms across levels of biological organization. Specifically, Manila clams acutely exposed to heatwaves enhanced their standard metabolic rate to fuel essential physiological maintenance, such as increasing activities of SOD, CAT, MDA, and AKP, and expression of HSP70. These strategies occur likely at the expense of fitness-related functions, as best exemplified by significant depressions in activities of enzymes (NKA, CMA, and T-ATP) and expression levels of genes (PT, KHK, CA, CAS, TYR, TNF-BP, and OSER). When heatwaves occurred again, Manila clams can respond and acclimate to thermal stress by implementing a suite of more ATP-efficient and less energy-costly compensatory mechanisms at various levels of biological organization. It is consequently becoming imperative to uncover underlying mechanisms responsible for such positive response and rapid acclimation to recurrent heatwaves.

The impact of temperature on lithium toxicity in the gastropod Tritia neritea

The most important use of lithium (Li) is in rechargeable batteries. The growing use of Li, incorrect disposal of Li-based applications, and inefficient recycling strategies for their elimination will result in the release of this metal into the aquatic systems. Alongside with the impacts caused by pollutants, organisms in coastal ecosystems are also facing environmental changes as those related with climate change scenarios, namely, seawater temperature rise. In this context, the present study aimed to evaluate the influence of temperature on Li toxicity, using the Nassariid gastropod Tritia neritea as model species. Metabolism and oxidative stress related biomarkers were evaluated after a 28-day exposure period. The results demonstrated that temperature enhanced the toxic impacts of Li, most probably due to snail increased sensitivity when under warming conditions. As a consequence of inefficient antioxidant and biotransformation capacity, lipid peroxidation was observed in Li-contaminated snails at 21 ºC, demonstrating a significant interaction between both factors. Regarding snails' metabolic capacity, Li did not affect snails, but a clear decrease on their metabolism was observed at increased temperature (with or without Li) which may limit snail defense capacity. Overall, the present findings demonstrated the impacts derived from Li towards marine intertidal gastropods, evidencing enhanced threats under predicted warming conditions. Considering the role of T. neritea in the ecosystem functioning, impacts on this species may greatly affect other populations and eventually the entire community.

Parasitism by metacercariae modulates the morphological, organic and mechanical responses of the shell of an intertidal bivalve to environmental drivers

Environmental variation alters biological interactions and their ecological and evolutionary consequences. In coastal systems, trematode parasites affect their hosts by disrupting their life-history traits. However, the effects of parasitism could be variable and dependent on the prevailing environmental conditions where the host-parasite interaction occurs. This study compared the effect of a trematode parasite in the family Renicolidae (metacercariae) on the body size and the shell organic and mechanical characteristics of the intertidal mussels Perumytilus purpuratus, inhabiting two environmentally contrasting localities in northern and central Chile (ca. 1600 km apart). Congruent with the environmental gradient along the Chilean coast, higher levels of temperature, salinity and pCO₂, and a lower pH characterise the northern locality compared to that of central Chile. In the north, parasitised individuals showed lower body size and shell resistance than non-parasitised individuals, while in central Chile, the opposite pattern was observed. Protein level in the organic matter of the shell was lower in the parasitised hosts than in the non-parasitised ones regardless of the locality. However, an increase in polysaccharide levels was observed in the parasitised individuals from central Chile. These results evidence that body size and shell properties of P. purpuratus vary between local populations and that they respond differently when confronting the parasitism impacts. Considering that the parasite prevalence reaches around 50% in both populations, if parasitism is not included in the analysis, the true response of the host species would be masked by the effects of the parasite, skewing our understanding of how environmental variables will affect marine species. Considering parasitism and identifying its effects on host species faced with environmental drivers is essential to understand and accurately predict the ecological consequences of climate change.

Marine heatwaves hamper neuro-immune and oxidative tolerance toward carbamazepine in Mytilus galloprovincialis

The increased frequency and intensity of short-term extreme warming phenomena have been associated to harsh biological and ecosystem outcomes (i.e., mass mortalities in marine organisms). Marine heatwaves (MHWs), occurring when seasonal temperature threshold is exceeded for at least 5 consecutive days, may reduce the tolerance of coastal species toward additional pressures, but interactions between such multiple stressors are virtually unexplored. The present study aimed to characterize in Mytilus galloprovincialis the influence of a simulated MHW scenario on the toxicological effects of the pharmaceutical carbamazepine (CBZ), ubiquitously detected in the marine environment and chosen as model compound for this relevant class of emerging contaminants. The bioaccumulation of CBZ and responsiveness of various biological parameters, including immune system, antioxidant status, lipid metabolism and cellular integrity, were analyzed in exposed mussels both during and after the end of the heatwave. MHW appeared to strongly modulate accumulation of CBZ, paralleled by weakened immunocompetence and onset of oxidative disturbance that finally evolved to cellular damages and lipid metabolism disorders. Elaboration of the overall results through a quantitative Weight of Evidence model, revealed the highest hazard in organisms exposed to both the stressors 10 days after the end of the heatwave, suggesting that MHWs could leave a footprint on the capability of mussels to counteract CBZ toxicity, thus affecting their vulnerability and predisposition to adverse effects toward multiple stressors.

Why are "suboptimal" temperatures preferred in a tropical intertidal ectotherm?

In thermally extreme environments it is challenging for organisms to maximize performance due to risks associated with stochastic variation in temperature and, subsequently, over evolutionary time minimizing the exposure to risk can serve as one of the mechanisms that result in organisms preferring suboptimal temperatures. We tested this hypothesis in a slow-moving intertidal snail on tropical rocky shores, where temperature variability increases with time from 30 min to 20 h when recorded at 30 min intervals (due to short-term environmental autocorrelation where temperatures closer in time are more similar as compared to temperatures over a long period of time). Failure to accommodate temporal variation in thermal stress by selecting cool habitats can result in mortality. Thermal performance curves for different traits (heart rate and locomotion) were measured and compared to the snail's thermal preferences in both the field and laboratory. Predicted performances of the snails were simulated based on thermal performance curves for different traits over multiple time scales and simulated carryover effects. A strong mismatch was found between physiological and behavioural thermal maxima of the snails (physiological thermal maximum being higher by ~ 7 °C), but the snails avoided these maxima and sought temperatures 7 - 14 °C cooler. Such a risk-averse strategy can be explained by their predicted performances where the snails should make decisions about preferred temperatures based on time periods ≥ 5 h to avoid underestimating the temporal variation in body temperature. In extreme and stochastic environments, where the temporal variation in environmental conditions can lead to substantial divergence between instantaneous and time-averaged thermal performances, "cooler is better" and "suboptimal" body temperatures are preferred as they provide sufficient buffer to reduce mortality risk from heat stress.

Impacts of marine heatwaves on pearl oysters are alleviated following repeated exposure

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) have occurred with increasing duration, frequency and intensity in the past decade in the South China Sea, posing serious threats to marine ecosystems and fisheries. However, the impact of MHWs on marine bivalves - one of the most ecologically and economically important fauna in coastal ecosystems - remains largely unknown. Here, we investigated physiological responses of the pearl oyster, Pinctada maxima inhabiting a newly identified climate change hotspot (Beibu Gulf, South China Sea) to short-lasting and repeatedly-occurring MHWs scenarios. Following 3-day exposure to short-lasting MHWs scenarios with water temperature rapidly arising from 24 °C to 28 °C, 32 °C and 36 °C, respectively, mortality rates of pearl oysters increased, and especially they suffered 100% mortality at 36 °C. Activities of enzymes including acid phosphatase (ACP), alkaline phosphatase (AKP), glutathione (GSH) and level of malondialdehyde (MDA) increased significantly with increasing intensity and duration of MHWs, indicating thermal stress responses. When exposed to repeatedly-occurring MHWs scenarios, mortality rates of pearl oysters increased slightly, and thermal stress responses were alleviated, as exemplified by significant decreases in ACP, AKP, GSH and MDA activities compared with those during short-lasting MHWs scenarios, demonstrating the potential of P. maxima to acclimate rapidly to MHWs. These findings advance our understanding of how marine bivalves respond to MHWs scenarios varying in duration, frequency, and intensity.

Increases in extreme heat stress in domesticated livestock species during the twenty-first century

Anthropogenic climate change is expected to have major impacts on domesticated livestock, including increased heat stress in animals in both intensive and extensive livestock systems. We estimate the changes in the number of extreme heat stress days per year for animals raised outdoors that can be expected in the major domesticated animal species (cattle, sheep, goats, poultry, and pigs) across the globe during this century. We used the temperature humidity index as a proxy for heat stress, calculated using temperature and relative humidity data collated from an ensemble of CMIP6 climate model output for mid and end century. We estimate changes in the proportions of different livestock species that may be at increased risk of extreme heat stress under two contrasting greenhouse gas emission scenarios. Results are discussed in relation to changes in the suitability of different climate conditions for domesticated livestock during the current century. We find that by end century, extreme heat stress risk is projected to increase for all livestock species in many parts of the tropics and some of the temperate zones, and to become climatically more widespread, compared to 2000. Although adaptation options exist for both intensive and extensive livestock production systems, the increasing pervasiveness of extreme heat stress risk in the future will seriously challenge the viability of outdoor livestock keeping, particularly in the lower latitudes in lower and middle-income countries where the costs of adaptation may be challenging to address.

An integrated, multi-level analysis of thermal effects on intertidal molluscs for understanding species distribution patterns

Elucidating the physiological mechanisms that underlie thermal stress and discovering how species differ in capacities for phenotypic acclimatization and evolutionary adaptation to this stress is critical for understanding current latitudinal and vertical distribution patterns of species and for predicting their future state in a warming world. Such mechanistic analyses require careful choice of study systems (species and temperature-sensitive traits) and design of laboratory experiments that reflect the complexities of in situ conditions. Here, we critically review a wide range of studies of intertidal molluscs that provide mechanistic accounts of thermal effects across all levels of biological organization - behavioural, organismal, organ level, cellular, molecular, and genomic - and show how temperature-sensitive traits govern distribution patterns and capacities for coping with thermal stress. Comparisons of congeners from different thermal habitats are especially effective means for identifying adaptive variation. We employ these mechanistic analyses to illustrate how species differ in the severity of threats posed by rising temperature. Counterintuitively, we show that some of the most heat-tolerant species may be most threatened by increases in temperatures because of their small thermal safety margins and minimal abilities to acclimatize to higher temperatures. We discuss recent molecular biological and genomic studies that provide critical foundations for understanding the types of evolutionary changes in protein structure, RNA secondary structure, genome content, and gene expression capacities that underlie adaptation to temperature. Duplication of stress-related genes, as found in heat-tolerant molluscs, may provide enhanced capacity for coping with higher temperatures. We propose that the anatomical, behavioural, physiological, and genomic diversity found among intertidal molluscs, which commonly are of critical importance and high abundance in these ecosystems, makes this group of animals a highly appropriate study system for addressing questions about the mechanistic determinants of current and future distribution patterns of intertidal organisms.

Repeated exposure to simulated marine heatwaves enhances the thermal tolerance in pearl oysters

In an era of unprecedented climate change, marine heatwaves (MHWs) are projected to increase in frequency, intensity, and duration, severely affecting marine organisms and fisheries and causing profound ecological and socioeconomic impacts. However, very little is known about effects of MHWs on ecologically and economically important bivalve species. Here, we investigate how pearl oysters, Pinctada maxima (Jameson), respond to MHWs under various simulated scenarios. Acute 3-day exposure to MHWs, mimicked by increasing the ambient seawater temperature from 24°C to 28°C, 32°C, and 36°C, respectively, induced significant changes (initially sustained increase and late decrease) in activities of antioxidant enzymes (GSH-Px, SOD, CAT, MDA, and T-AOC) and biomineralizaiton-related enzymes (AKP and ACP). Likewise, energy-metabolizing enzymes (NKA, CMA, and T-ATP) showed remarkable acute responses, with significant increases occurring at the beginning and end of thermal exposure. Following repeated exposure to MHWs, without exception, acute responses of assayed enzymes to MHWs were significantly alleviated, implying that pearl oysters have the ability to implement more efficient and less costly energy-utilizing strategies to compensate for thermal stress induced physiological interferences. These findings indicate that marine bivalves can respond plastically and acclimate rapidly to MHWs and pave the way for predicting the fate of this important taxonomic groups in rapidly changing oceans.

Capacity of an ecologically key urchin to recover from extreme events: Physiological impacts of heatwaves and the road to recovery

Heatwaves are increasing in frequency and intensity, with substantial impacts on ecosystems and species which maintain their function. Whether or not species are harmed by heatwave conditions by being pushed beyond their physiological bounds can depend on whether energy replacement is sufficient to enable recovery from acute stress. We exposed an ecologically important sea urchin, Heliocidaris erythrogramma, to experimental marine heatwave scenarios in context with recent summer heat anomalies in moderate (25 °C), and strong heatwave (26 °C) conditions for 10 days, followed by a 10-day recovery period at normal summer temperature (23 °C). Greater heatwave intensity drove higher metabolic rates which were not matched with a concurrent increase in food consumption or faecal production. However, food consumption increased during the post-heatwave recovery period, likely to replenish an energy deficit. Despite this, mortality increased into the recovery period and seemed to be caused by latent effects, manifesting as a decline in health index as individuals progressed from spine and pedicellariae loss, through to loss of tube foot rigor, bald patch disease, culminating in mortality. We show for the first time that the acute thermal stress of heatwaves can have latent physiological effects that cause mortality even when conditions return to normal. Our results show that the negative effects of heatwaves can manifest after relief from stressful conditions and highlight the importance of understanding the latent effects on physiology and health. This understanding will offer insights into the long-term potential for stress recovery following seemingly sublethal effects and whether the restoration of ambient conditions post-heatwave is sufficient to ensure population stability.

Norethindrone causes cellular and hepatic injury in zebrafish by compromising the metabolic processes associated with antioxidant defence: Insights from metabolomics

Progestins, such as norethindrone (NET), have been increasingly detected in aquatic environments due to their extensive use for medical applications. While NET is notorious for its endocrine disrupting effects, it has been recently shown to cause cellular damage, suggesting its potential impacts on the body defence of organisms. Hence, we examined the histological features and antioxidant defence of zebrafish (Danio rerio) after exposing to NET (50 ng/L and 500 ng/L) for 72 days, followed by analysing its metabolome to explore whether NET disturbs the metabolic processes responsible for antioxidant defence. While acute mortality was not triggered, we found that antioxidant defence was substantially weakened by NET at 500 ng/L (i.e. reduced SOD and GSH levels) and hence liver injury was inflicted (i.e. elevated ALT and MDA levels), as manifested by vacuolization of liver tissues and reduced number of normal cells in the liver. Metabolomic analysis showed that the metabolic processes responsible for antioxidant defence were disrupted by NET (e.g. upregulation of nervonyl carnitine and chenodeoxycholic acid 3-sulfate; downregulation of homolanthionine and acevaltrate) and these changes can undermine antioxidant defence by suppressing Nrf2-ARE and NF-κB pathways that contribute to the synthesis of SOD and GSH. This study demonstrates how NET can compromise the body defence of aquatic organisms via metabolic disruption, suggesting that the impacts of progestins on their fitness are more detrimental than previously thought.

Effects of Simulated Heat Wave on Oxidative Physiology and Immunity in Asian Yellow Pond Turtle (Mauremys mutica)

Global warming has led to an increase in the frequency, duration, and intensity of heat waves in the summer, which can cause frequent and acute heat stress on ectotherms. Thus, determining how ectothermic animals respond to heat waves has been attracting growing interest among ecologists. However, the physiological and biochemical responses to heat waves in reptiles, especially aquatic reptiles, are still poorly understood. The current study investigated the oxidant physiology, immunity, and expression levels of heat shock proteins (HSP) mRNA after exposure to a simulated heat wave (1 week, 35 ± 4°C), followed by a recovery period (1 week, 28 ± 4°C) in juvenile Asian yellow pond turtle (Mauremys mutica), a widely farmed aquatic turtle in East Asia. The contents of malondialdehyde (MDA) in the liver and muscle were not significantly affected by the heat wave or recovery. Of all antioxidant enzymes, only the activity of glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) in muscles increased after heat wave, while the total superoxide dismutase (T-SOD), catalase activity (CAT), and total antioxidant capacity (T-AOC) did not change during the study. The organo-somatic index for the liver and spleen of M. mutica decreased after the heat wave but increased to the initial level after recovery. In contrast, plasma lysozyme activity and serum complement C4 levels increased after the heat wave, returning to the control level after recovery. In addition, heat waves did not alter the relative expression of HSP60, HSP70, and HSP90 mRNA in the liver. Eventually, heat wave slightly increased the IBR/n index. Therefore, our results suggested that heat waves did not lead to oxidative damage to lipids in M. mutica, but deleteriously affected the turtles’ immune organs. Meanwhile, the constitutive levels of most antioxidative enzyme activities, HSPs and enhanced blood immune functions might protect the turtles from the threat of heat waves under the current climate scenarios.

Benthic estuarine communities' contribution to bioturbation under the experimental effect of marine heatwaves

Marine heatwaves are increasing worldwide, with several negative impacts on biological communities and ecosystems. This 24-day study tested heatwaves' effect with distinct duration and recovery periods on benthic estuarine communities' diversity and contribution to ecosystem functioning experimentally. The communities were obtained from a temperate estuary, usually subjected to high daily thermal amplitudes. Our goal was to understand the communities' response to the thermal change, including the community descriptors and behavioural changes expected during heat extremes. We measured community composition and structural changes and the bioturbation process and nutrient release as ecosystem functioning measurements. Overall, our findings highlight the potential tolerance of studied estuarine species to the temperature ranges tested in the study, as community composition and structure were similar, independently of the warming effect. We detected a slight trend for bioturbation and nutrient release increase in the communities under warming, yet these responses were not consistent with the heatwaves exposure duration. Overall, we conclude on the complexity of estuarine communities' contribution to functioning under warming, and the importance of scalable experiments with benthic organisms' responses to climate variability, accommodating longer time scales and replication. Such an approach would set more efficient expectations towards climate change mitigation or adaptation in temperate estuarine ecosystems.

Long-term thermal acclimation drives adaptive physiological adjustments of a marine gastropod to reduce sensitivity to climate change

Ocean warming is predicted to challenge the persistence of a variety of marine organisms, especially when combined with ocean acidification. While temperature affects virtually all physiological processes, the extent to which thermal history mediates the adaptive capacity of marine organisms to climate change has been largely overlooked. Using populations of a marine gastropod (Turbo undulatus) with different thermal histories (cool vs. warm), we compared their physiological adjustments following exposure (8-week) to ocean acidification and warming. Compared to cool-acclimated counterparts, we found that warm-acclimated individuals had a higher thermal threshold (i.e. increased CT_max by 2 °C), which was unaffected by the exposure to ocean acidification and warming. Thermal history also strongly mediated physiological effects, where warm-acclimated individuals adjusted to warming by conserving energy, suggested by lower respiration and ingestion rates, energy budget (i.e. scope for growth) and O:N ratio. After exposure to warming, warm-acclimated individuals had higher metabolic rates and greater energy budget due to boosted ingestion rates, but such compensatory feeding disappeared when combined with ocean acidification. Overall, we suggest that thermal history can be a critical mediator of physiological performance under future climatic conditions. Given the relatively gradual rate of global warming, marine organisms may be better able to adaptively adjust their physiology to future climate than what short-term experiments currently convey.

Species interactions alter the selection of thermal environment in a coral reef fish

Increasing ocean temperatures and the resulting poleward range shifts of species has highlighted the importance of a species preferred temperature and thermal range in shaping ecological communities. Understanding the temperatures preferred and avoided by individual species, and how these are influenced by species interactions is critical in predicting the future trajectories of populations, assemblages, and ecosystems. Using an automated shuttlebox system, we established the preferred temperature and upper and lower threshold temperatures (i.e., avoided temperatures) of a common coral reef fish, the black-axil chromis, Chromis atripectoralis. We then investigated how the presence of conspecifics, heterospecifics (Neopomacentrus bankieri), or a predator (Cephalopholis spiloparaea) influenced the selection of these temperatures. Control C. atripectoralis preferred 27.5 ± 1.0 °C, with individuals avoiding temperatures below 23.5 ± 0.9 °C and above 29.7 ± 0.7 °C. When associating with either conspecifics or heterospecifics, C. atripectoralis selected significantly lower temperatures (conspecifics: preferred = 21.2 ± 1.4 °C, lower threshold = 18.1 ± 0.8 °C; heterospecifics: preferred = 21.1 ± 1.1 °C, lower threshold = 19.2 ± 0.9 °C), but not higher temperatures (conspecifics: preferred = 28.9 ± 1.2 °C, upper threshold = 30.8 ± 0.9 °C; heterospecifics: preferred = 29.7 ± 1.1 °C, upper threshold = 31.4 ± 0.8 °C). The presence of the predator, however, had a significant effect on both lower and upper thresholds. Individual C. atripectoralis exposed themselves to temperatures ~ 5.5 °C cooler or warmer (lower threshold: 18.6 ± 0.5 °C, upper threshold: 35.2 ± 0.5 °C) than control fish before moving into the chamber containing the predator. These findings demonstrate how behavioural responses due to species interactions influence the thermal ecology of a tropical reef fish; however, there appears to be limited scope for individuals to tolerate higher temperatures unless faced with the risk of predation.

Microclimate drives intraspecific thermal specialization: conservation perspectives in freshwater habitats

Endemic and relict species are often confined to ecological refugia or over fragmented distributions, representing priority conservation subjects. Within these sites, the individual population may realize distinct niches to a varying degree of specialization. An emblematic example is provided by freshwater species segregated in thermal-mineral springs, where individuals may face highly diverse microclimates in limited geographic areas. Downscaling the characterization of physiological traits to microclimatic niches becomes pivotal to adopt effective conservation measures in these heterogeneous habitats. Melanopsis etrusca (Brot, 1862) is an endangered relict snail endemic to a small number of thermal-mineral streams in central Italy. Here we describe the thermal tolerance of two populations of M. etrusca inhabiting streams with distinctly different thermal regimes, investigating the extent of physiological and behavioural specialization to such diverse microclimatic niches. The comparison of oxygen consumption rates of a population dwelling in temperate streams, characterized by seasonal temperature fluctuations (12-27°C), with a population experiencing constantly hot water (35-38°C) revealed the absence of any seasonal or geographic effect on metabolic compensation. Conversely, mobility performances were maximized in the population inhabiting the hot stream. Interestingly, here, the snails exhibited emersion behaviour outside the water, triggered by temperatures above 37°C. In the field, individuals of this population are observed inactive on stream banks, conceivably to minimize the metabolic cost that otherwise would be induced by remaining in the hot water. Only a few individuals from the temperate stream exhibited the same behaviour when exposed to elevated temperatures, suggesting the exaptation of a pre-existing trait during the evolutionary process of adaptation to hot waters. The present results provide elements for the best practice in future programmes aimed at reintroducing stocks of threatened species across heterogeneous habitats. Our study further underlines the relevance of downscaling data collection for endangered species conservation in order to recognize microclimatic specializations.

Microplastic accumulation via trophic transfer: Can a predatory crab counter the adverse effects of microplastics by body defence?

Microplastics are considered detrimental to aquatic organisms due to their potential accumulation along food chains. Thus, it is puzzling why some of them appear unaffected by microplastics. Here, we assessed the contribution of water filtration and food consumption to microplastic accumulation in a predatory marine crab (Charybdis japonica) and examined the associated impacts of microplastics (particle size: 5 μm) following ingestion for one week. Results showed that water filtration and food consumption contributed similarly to the accumulation of microplastics, which were distributed among organs in this order: hepatopancreas > guts > gills > muscles. Yet, biomagnification (i.e. accumulation through consumption of microplastic-contaminated mussels) did not occur possibly due to egestion of microplastics. The crabs upregulated detoxification capacity (EROD) and antioxidant defence (GST) in response to the microplastics accumulated in their tissues. However, these defence mechanisms collapsed when the microplastic concentration in hepatopancreas exceeded ~3 mg g^-1, leading to severe hepatic injury (elevated AST and ALT) and impaired neural activity (reduced AChE). Our results suggest that marine organisms have an innate capacity to counter the acute effects of microplastics, but there is a limit beyond which the defence mechanisms fail and hence physiological functions are impaired. As microplastic pollution will deteriorate in the future, the fitness and survival of marine organisms may be undermined by microplastics, affecting the stability and functioning of marine ecosystems.

Adopting “Difference-in-Differences” Method to Monitor Crop Response to Agrometeorological Hazards with Satellite Data: A Case Study of Dry-Hot Wind

Rapid changing climate has increased the risk of natural hazards and threatened global and regional food security. Near real-time monitoring of crop response to agrometeorological hazards is fundamental to ensuring national and global food security. However, quantifying crop responses to a specific hazard in the natural environment is still quite challenging, especially over large areas, due to the lack of tools to separate the independent impact of the hazard on crops from other confounding factors. In this study, we present a general difference-in-differences (DID) framework to monitor crop response to agrometeorological hazards at near real-time using widely accessible remotely sensed vegetation indices (VIs). To demonstrate the effectiveness of the DID framework, we applied it in quantifying the dry-hot wind impact on winter wheat in northern China as a case study using the VIs calculated from the MODIS data. The monitoring results for three years with varying severity levels of dry-hot events (i.e., 2007, 2013, and 2014) demonstrated that the framework can effectively detect winter wheat growing areas affected by dry-hot wind hazards. The estimated damage shows a notable relationship (R2 = 0.903, p < 0.001) with the dry-hot wind intensity calculated from meteorological data, suggesting the effectiveness of the method when field data on a large scale is not available for direct validation. The main advantage of this method is that it can effectively isolate the impact of a specific hazard (i.e., dry-hot wind in the case study) from the mixed signals caused by other confounding factors. This general DID framework is very flexible and can be easily extended to other natural hazards and crop types with proper adjustment. Not only can this framework improve the crop yield forecast but also it can provide near real-time assessment for farmers to adapt their farming practice to mitigate impacts of agricultural hazards.

High-Temperature Conditions Promote Soybean Flowering through the Transcriptional Reprograming of Flowering Genes in the Photoperiod Pathway

Global warming has an impact on crop growth and development. Flowering time is particularly sensitive to environmental factors such as day length and temperature. In this study, we investigated the effects of global warming on flowering using an open-top Climatron chamber, which has a higher temperature and CO2 concentration than in the field. Two different soybean cultivars, Williams 82 and IT153414, which exhibited different flowering times, were promoted flowering in the open-top Climatron chamber than in the field. We more specifically examined the expression patterns of soybean flowering genes on the molecular level under high-temperature conditions. The elevated temperature induced the expression of soybean floral activators, GmFT2a and GmFT5a as well as a set of GmCOL genes. In contrast, it suppressed floral repressors, E1 and E2 homologs. Moreover, high-temperature conditions affected the expression of these flowering genes in a day length-independent manner. Taken together, our data suggest that soybean plants properly respond and adapt to changing environments by modulating the expression of a set of flowering genes in the photoperiod pathway for the successful production of seeds and offspring.

Survived but not safe: Marine heatwave hinders metabolism in two gastropod survivors

Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are an emerging threat to marine organisms that have increased in frequency and magnitude in the past decade. These extreme heating events can have differential impacts on organisms with some experiencing mortality while others survive. Here, we experimentally exposed two species of subtidal gastropod (Trochus sacellum and Astralium haematragum) to two realistic intensities of MHW to test the ability of different species to physiologically cope with extreme heating events. Extreme MHW conditions caused 100% mortality in both species within five days. While both species survived under moderate MHW conditions they showed evidence of nonadaptive metabolic depression. Both species demonstrated an inability to upregulate their metabolic rates at the higher temperatures following exposure to a MHW (i.e. reduced temperature of maximum metabolic rate; T_MMR), suggesting a lack of molecular protective responses and ongoing physiological damage. Therefore, the physiological damage endured by heatwave survivors may lessen their ability to cope with subsequent stress until fully recovered. Repairing this damage may have serious repercussions for the rate of recovery of these normally resilient species and their ability to maintain their ecological functions post MHW, especially under the predicted increasing frequency, duration and magnitude of MHWs.

Linking energy budget to physiological adaptation: How a calcifying gastropod adjusts or succumbs to ocean acidification and warming

Accelerating CO₂ emissions have driven physico-chemical changes in the world's oceans, such as ocean acidification and warming. How marine organisms adjust or succumb to such environmental changes may be determined by their ability to balance energy intake against expenditure (i.e. energy budget) as energy supports physiological functions, including those with adaptive value. Here, we examined whether energy budget is a driver of physiological adaptability of marine calcifiers to the near-future ocean acidification and warming; i.e. how physiological energetics (respiration rate, feeding rate, energy assimilation and energy budget) relates to adjustments in shell growth and shell properties of a calcifying gastropod (Austrocochlea concamerata). We found that ocean warming boosted the energy budget of gastropods due to increased feeding rate, resulting in faster shell growth and greater shell strength (i.e. more mechanically resilient). When combined with ocean acidification, however, the gastropods had a substantial decrease in energy budget due to reduced feeding rate and energy assimilation, leading to the reduction in shell growth and shell strength. By linking energy budget to the adjustability of shell building, we revealed that energy availability can be critical to determine the physiological adaptability of marine calcifiers to the changing oceanic climate.
