Abstract
Purpose Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a growing public health concern among college students, with cybervictimization (CV) emerging as a significant contributing factor. Grounded in the experiential avoidance theory, this study investigates the mediating roles of cognitive fusion and negative emotions in the relationship between CV and NSSI, providing new insights into these key variables. Methods A convenience sample of 457 undergraduate students (29% male; mean age 18.36±0.66 years) from two universities in Fujian Province participated in this study. Data were collected using the Cyberbullying Victimization Scale, Cognitive Fusion Questionnaire, Positive and Negative Affect Schedule, and Non-Suicidal Self-Injury Scale. Descriptive statistics and Pearson correlation analysis were conducted using SPSS 25.0, while the mediating effects were analyzed using Process 3.5. Results (1) Significant positive correlations were found among CV, cognitive fusion, negative emotions, and NSSI (p < 0.01). (2) CV was directly associated with NSSI (β = 0.22, p < 0.001) and positively predicted both cognitive fusion (β = 0.17, p < 0.001) and negative emotions (β = 0.15, p < 0.01). Additionally, cognitive fusion (β = 0.16, p < 0.01) and negative emotions (β = 0.11, p < 0.05) significantly predicted NSSI. (3) Mediation analyses revealed that cognitive fusion and negative emotions mediated the CV-NSSI relationship through three pathways: CV→cognitive fusion→NSSI (mediation effect = 0.026), CV→negative emotions→NSSI (mediation effect = 0.02), and CV→cognitive fusion→negative emotions→NSSI (mediation effect = 0.01). Conclusion The study confirms that CV influences NSSI indirectly through cognitive fusion and negative emotions, supporting the experiential avoidance model. These findings underscore the importance of addressing cognitive and emotional processes in interventions aimed at reducing NSSI among college students.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Attitudes toward risk and ambiguity significantly influence how individuals assess and value rewards. This fMRI study examines the reward valuation process under conditions of uncertainty and investigates the associated neural mechanisms in individuals who engage in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) as a coping mechanism for psychological pain. METHODS The study involved 44 unmedicated individuals who reported five or more NSSI episodes in the past year, along with 42 age-, sex-, handedness-, IQ-, and socioeconomic status-matched controls. During the fMRI scans, all participants were presented with decision-making scenarios involving uncertainty, both in terms of risk (known probabilities) and ambiguity (unknown probabilities). RESULTS In the NSSI group, aversive attitudes toward ambiguity were correlated with increased emotion reactivity and greater method versatility. Whole-brain analysis revealed notable group-by-condition interactions in the right middle cingulate cortex and left hippocampus. Specifically, the NSSI group showed decreased neural activation under ambiguity v. risk compared to the control group. Moreover, reduced hippocampal activation under ambiguity in the NSSI group was associated with increased emotion regulation problems. CONCLUSIONS This study presents the first evidence of reduced brain activity in specific regions during value-based decision-making under conditions of ambiguity in individuals with NSSI. These findings have important clinical implications, particularly concerning emotion dysregulation in this population. This study indicates the need for interventions that support and guide individuals with NSSI to promote adaptive decision-making in the face of ambiguous uncertainty.

Abstract
Background There is a consensus that both nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) and suicidal ideation as risk factors for suicidal behavior have a strong connection. However, a lack of longitudinal information has limited the clarification of the concrete relationship between them. Aims This study aimed to examine the specific mechanism between NSSI and suicidal ideation over time, during adolescence. Method A longitudinal study was conducted with 193 Chinese adolescents. NSSI and suicidal ideations were examined over the course of a 1year followed-up, and three waves of data were collected. Results The NSSI at time T1 significantly positively predicted suicidal ideation at time T2; Suicidal ideation at time T2 also significantly positively predicted NSSI at time T3. Limitations Given that the small number of participants with suicidal ideation and NSSI, the findings of the study should be interpreted with caution and a lager sample is needed in the future. Conclusion It was suggested that NSSI may occur before suicidal ideation, which in turn would strengthen NSSI, so interventions should be carried out from two aspects (behaviors and thoughts) to improve adolescents' mental health.

Abstract
Dysfunctions in reward and/or habit formation have been proposed as factors contributing individually to the maintenance of restrictive eating and nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). However, despite the high comorbidity between these behaviors, the associations between reward and habit formation in their co-occurrence remains unclear. This study examined self-reported reward responsivity and habit strength among individuals with co-occurring restrictive eating and NSSI (Comorbid group; n = 108) and those with one behavior only (One-behavior group; n = 113). Hierarchical logistic regression analyses assessed the association between reward and habit features and the co-occurrence of restrictive eating and NSSI, accounting for the effects of impulsivity (a characteristic commonly considered to underlie co-occurring disordered eating and NSSI). Partial correlations examined the relationships between these features and the severity of eating disorder and NSSI symptoms, also controlling for impulsivity. Lower reward responsivity was associated with the co-occurrence of restrictive eating and NSSI, even after accounting for impulsivity (p = 0.017). In exploratory analyses, this relationship was no longer significant after accounting for self-reported depression. No significant associations were found regarding habit formation and restrictive eating and NSSI co-occurrence. Lower reward responsivity was linked to increased NSSI frequency and versatility in both groups and associated with severity of eating pathology in the Comorbid group (ps < 0.05). Our findings suggest that blunted reward responsivity may relate to the co-occurrence of restrictive eating, NSSI, and depressive symptoms, as well as the severity of restrictive eating and NSSI. Reward disturbances may serve as a crucial target in the treatment of multiple self-destructive behaviors.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent and especially among the adolescence population. It has been argued that abnormal brain activations in reward processing could be regarded as objective biomarkers in NSSI, but the evidence is mixed. This study aims to explore the reward processing mechanism of NSSI from the perspective of functional brain circuitry and investigate the role of a cognitive factor (rumination). METHOD Seventy-one 17-21 years old participants performed a monetary incentive delay (MID) task during functional magnetic resonance imaging scanning. Psychophysiological interaction (PPI) analysis was used to test the inner-group differences of brain functional connectivity. In addition, a mediation model was established with the mediation effect of rumination on the relationship between functional brain circuitry and NSSI. RESULTS PPI analysis suggested that functional connectivity of the orbital frontal cortex (OFC) (with precuneus, SMA) was significantly enhanced in NSSI in the gain > loss contrast, but not in the loss > gain contrast. Mediation analysis revealed that rumination mediated the relationship between NSSI and the OFC- precuneus functional connectivity in the gain > loss contrast. CONCLUSION Our research revealed that the abnormal OFC functional connectivity in gain (not loss) anticipation can be served as the sensitive biomarkers of NSSI. And there was a chain path for NSSI, that was from functional brain circuitry to negative cognition and then to problem behavior.

Abstract
Suicide is the cause of death of approximately 800,000 people a year. Despite the relevance of this behaviour, risk assessment tools rely on clinician experience and subjective ratings. Given that previous suicide attempts are the single strongest predictors of future attempts, we designed a systematic review and coordinate-based meta-analysis to demonstrate whether neuroimaging features can help distinguish individuals who attempted suicide from subjects who did not. Out of 5,659 publications from PubMed, Scopus, and Web of Science, we summarised 102 experiments and meta-analysed 23 of them. A cluster in the right superior temporal gyrus, a region implicated in emotional processing, might be functionally hyperactive in individuals who attempted suicide. No statistically significant differences in brain morphometry were evidenced. Furthermore, we used JuSpace to show that this cluster is enriched in 5-HT1A heteroreceptors in the general population. This exploratory meta-analysis provides a putative neural substrate linked to previous suicide attempts. Heterogeneity in the analytical techniques and weak or absent power analysis of the studies included in this review currently limit the applicability of the findings, the replication of which should be prioritised.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE We conducted this resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rsfMRI) study to characterize changes in regional homogeneity (ReHo) or fractional amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (fALFF) in young adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD), with or without non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). METHODS We recruited 54 MDD patients with NSSI (MDD/NSSI), 68 MDD patients without NSSI, which is referred to as simple MDD (sMDD), and 66 matched healthy controls (HCs). A combination of fALFF and ReHo analyses was conducted. The effects of NSSI on the brain and their relationship to clinical variables were examined in this study. RESULTS MDD/NSSI patients have decreased fALFF in the right superior frontal gyrus (SFG) and the right inferior parietal lobe (IPL), decreased ReHo in the right SFG and the right middle temporal gyrus (MTG) and the left middle occipital gyrus (MOG). fALFF and ReHo values of the right SFG are positively correlated. The ReHo values of the right SFG and the number of recent self-injuries are positively correlated; the fALFF values of the right SFG are negatively correlated with NSSI severity. CONCLUSIONS There is a difference in brain activity between MDD/NSSI and sMDD, which may serve as an important physiological marker to determine the risk of self-injury and suicide. SIGNIFICANCE Abnormal brain activity in patients with NSSI may provide new perspectives and significant implications on the severity of MDD patients and the prevention of self-injury and suicide.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The urge to self-harm can be likened to craving in addictive behaviours. However, it remains unclear whether cognitive mechanisms involved in craving, such as attentional biases to cues, also underpin the urge to self-harm. METHODS A Dot Probe Task was used to investigate attentional biases to self-harm cues in young people aged 16-25 with self-harm. Cues were shown for either 0.2 s or 2 s. Dot Probe Task performance in the Self-harm group (N = 50) was compared with age-matched Healthy Controls (N = 50) and age- and negative-affect (Depression Anxiety Stress Scale-21) matched controls with no self-harm (N = 50). RESULTS The Self-harm group showed significantly greater avoidance of self-harm cues than Healthy Controls at 2 s. The Negative Affect group showed significantly less difficulty disengaging from self-harm cues than the Self-harm group and Healthy Controls at 2 s. There were no between-group differences in attentional bias at 0.2 s. LIMITATIONS Study limitations that may affect attentional biases in the Self-harm group include not measuring indicators of recovery and recruiting only from the community potentially missing more severe self-harm presentations in clinical settings. CONCLUSIONS Avoidance of self-harm cues in young people with self-harm may reflect conflict around self-harm behaviour, consistent with ambivalence models of craving. An ability to disengage from self-harm cues may be a protective factor in young people with higher levels of negative affect who do not self-harm. Whether these attentional biases represent a quantifiable marker of treatment response or susceptibility to relapse in individuals with self-harm remains an area for future investigation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Preliminary evidence indicates altered hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis and autonomic nervous system (ANS) response to experimental pain in individuals with nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). This study investigated effects of NSSI severity and severity of psychopathology on the HPA axis and ANS response to pain. METHODS N = 164 adolescents with NSSI and n = 45 healthy controls received heat pain stimulation. Salivary cortisol, α-amylase and blood pressure were repeatedly assessed before and after painful stimulation. Heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV) were assessed continuously. NSSI severity and comorbid psychopathology were derived from diagnostic assessments. Main and interaction effects of time of measurement and NSSI severity, adjusted for severity of adverse childhood experiences, borderline personality disorder and depression, on HPA axis and ANS response to pain were examined using regression analyses. RESULTS Increasing NSSI severity predicted an increasing cortisol response (χ2(3) = 12.09, p = .007) to pain. After adjusting for comorbid psychopathology, greater NSSI severity predicted decreased α-amylase levels following pain (χ2(3) = 10.47, p = .015), and decreased HR (χ2(2) = 8.53, p = .014) and increased HRV(χ2(2) = 13.43, p = .001) response to pain. LIMITATIONS Future research should implement several NSSI severity indicators, potentially revealing complex associations with the physiological response to pain. Assessing physiological responses to pain in NSSI in a naturalistic setting presents a promising avenue for future research in NSI. CONCLUSIONS Findings indicate an increased pain-related HPA axis response and an ANS response characterized by reduced sympathetic and increased parasympathetic activity associated with NSSI severity. Results support claims for dimensional approaches to NSSI and its related psychopathology alongside shared, underlying neurobiological correlates.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) has a higher prevalence in adolescents with depressive disorders than in community adolescents. This study examined the differences in NSSI behaviors between adolescents with unipolar depression (UD) and those with bipolar depression (BD). METHODS Adolescents with UD or BD were recruited from 20 general or psychiatric hospitals across China. The methods, frequency, and function of NSSI were assessed by Functional Assessment of Self-Mutilation. The Beck Suicide Ideation Scale was used to evaluate adolescents' suicidal ideation, and the 10-item Kessler Psychological Distress Scale to estimate the anxiety and depression symptoms. RESULTS The UD group had higher levels of depression (19.16 vs.17.37, F=15.23, P<0.001) and anxiety symptoms (17.73 vs.16.70, F=5.00, P=0.026) than the BD group. Adolescents with BD had a longer course of NSSI than those with UD (2.00 vs.1.00 year, Z=-3.39, P=0.001). There were no statistical differences in the frequency and the number of methods of NSSI between the UD and BD groups. Depression (r=0.408, P<0.01) and anxiety (r=0.391, P<0.01) were significantly and positively related to NSSI frequency. CONCLUSION Adolescents with BD had a longer course of NSSI than those with UD. More importantly, NSSI frequency were positively and strongly correlated with depression and anxiety symptoms, indicating the importance of adequate treatment of depression and anxiety in preventing and intervening adolescents' NSSI behaviors.

Abstract
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), a highly prevalent symptom in adolescence, has been associated with impulsivity. Behavioral measures of response inhibition in combination with the recording of brain activity potentially improve the understanding of the etiology of the behavior. We therefore investigated prefrontal cortex (PFC) oxygenation during a response inhibition task using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) in n = 152 adolescents with NSSI and n = 47 healthy controls. We compared groups regarding behavioral performance and PFC oxygenation and tested whether the association between task performance and PFC oxygenation differed between groups. PFC oxygenation was slightly higher in adolescents with NSSI than in controls. Further, there was evidence for a group by performance interaction: In healthy controls, higher oxygenated hemoglobin was associated with better task performance, which was not the case in the NSSI group. We did not find evidence of associations between PFC oxygenation and clinical measures. Our study provides preliminary evidence of altered brain functional correlates of response inhibition in adolescents with NSSI potentially reflecting deficient top-down regulation of limbic regions through prefrontal regions. Due to methodological limitations of the current study, findings must be interpreted with caution and future studies should optimize task designs for fNIRS processing.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Rates of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) increase dramatically in adolescence. Affective reactivity and adverse social experiences have been linked to NSSI, but less is known about whether these factors may separately or interactively predict NSSI, especially longitudinally. This study combined functional magnetic resonance imaging and a sociometric measure to test whether a combination of neural (e.g., amygdala) reactivity to social punishment and peer-nominated peer acceptance/rejection predicts NSSI longitudinally in adolescence. Amygdala reactivity was examined as a potential neural marker of affective reactivity to social punishment, which may heighten NSSI risk in contexts of social adversity. METHODS One hundred twenty-five adolescents (63 female) completed a social incentive delay task during neuroimaging and school-based peer nominations to measure peer acceptance/rejection. NSSI engagement was assessed at baseline and 1-year follow-up. RESULTS Greater amygdala reactivity to social punishment predicted greater NSSI engagement 1 year later among adolescents with high peer rejection. This effect for the amygdala was specific to social punishment (vs. reward) and held when controlling for biological sex and pubertal development. Exploratory analyses found that ventral striatum reactivity to social reward and punishment similarly interacted with peer rejection to predict NSSI but that amygdala connectivity with salience network regions did not. CONCLUSIONS Amygdala reactivity to social punishment, in combination with high peer rejection, may increase NSSI risk in adolescence, possibly via heightened affective reactivity to adverse social experiences. Objective measures of neurobiological and social risk factors may improve prediction of NSSI, while therapeutic approaches that target affective reactivity and increase prosocial skills may protect against NSSI in adolescence.

Abstract
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) behaviors are a major public health concern among adolescents with depression. Such behaviors may be associated with the reward system. However, the underlying mechanism in patients with depression and NSSI still remains unclear. A total of 56 drug-naïve adolescents with depression, including 23 patients with NSSI (the NSSI group) and 33 patients without NSSI (the nNSSI group), and 25 healthy controls (HCs) were recruited in this study. Seed-based functional connectivity (FC) was used to explore the NSSI-related FC alterations in the reward circuit. Correlation analysis was conducted between the altered FCs and clinical data. Compared with the nNSSI group, the NSSI group showed greater FC between left nucleus accumbens (NAcc) and right lingual gyrus and between right putamen accumbens and right angular gyrus (ANG). The NSSI group also had declined FC between right NAcc and left inferior cerebellum, between left cingulate gyrus (CG) and right ANG, between left CG and left middle temporal gyrus (MTG), and between right CG and bilateral MTG (voxel-wise p < 0.01, cluster-wise p < 0.05, Gaussian random field correction). The FC between right NAcc and left inferior cerebellum was found positively correlated with the score of addictive features of NSSI (r = 0.427, p = 0.042). Our findings indicated that the regions in the reward circuit with NSSI-related FC alterations included bilateral NAcc, right putamen and bilateral CG, which may provide new evidence on the neural mechanisms of NSSI behaviors in adolescents with depression.

Abstract
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) has been consistently associated with a reduced aversion to physical pain. Yet, little research has been done to investigate the brain structures related to pain in individuals with NSSI. This study examined gray matter volume patterns of pain processing regions in participants engaging in NSSI (n = 63) and age-, sex-, and handedness-matched healthy controls (n = 63). Voxel-based morphometry was performed to explore gray matter volume in regions of interest (ROIs) and partial correlation analyses were conducted to identify their associations with the frequency, versatility, duration, functions, and pain intensity of self-injury. As a result, significant volume decreases were found in the right anterior insula, bilateral secondary somatosensory cortex (SII), and left inferior frontal gyrus. Moreover, individuals with smaller anterior insula and SII volume showed a higher likelihood of endorsing affect-regulation and sensation-seeking functions of NSSI, as well as engaging in self-injury with a greater perceived intensity of pain. Our results provide the first empirical evidence that individuals with NSSI may exhibit distinct characteristics in brain regions associated with the affective component of pain processing. These neurobiological changes may be associated with their maladaptive response to noxious and painful NSSI experiences.

Abstract
Given the high prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) among teenagers worldwide, the underlying mechanisms promoting such behavior must be urgently investigated. This study aimed to investigate neurobiological changes in the regional brain in adolescents with NSSI by comparing the volumes of the subcortical structures of 23 female adolescents with NSSI and 23 healthy controls with no history of psychiatric diagnosis or treatment. The NSSI group comprised those who underwent inpatient treatment for non-suicidal self-harm behavior at the Department of Psychiatry at Daegu Catholic University Hospital from July 1, 2018, to December 31, 2018. The control group comprised healthy adolescents from the community. We compared differences in the volume of the bilateral thalamus, caudate, putamen, hippocampus, and amygdala. All statistical analyses were conducted using SPSS Statistics Version 25. The NSSI group exhibited decreased subcortical volume in the left amygdala and marginally decreased subcortical volume in the left thalamus. Our results provide important clues about adolescent NSSI's underlying biology. Analysis of subcortical volumes between the NSSI and normal groups revealed subcortical volume differences in the left amygdala and thalamus, part of the core cerebral regions responsible for emotional processing and regulation, which may help explain the neurobiological mechanism of NSSI.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Rumination, or repetitive and habitual negative thinking, is associated with psychopathology and related behaviors in adolescents, including non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI). Despite the link between self-reported rumination and NSSI, there is limited understanding of how rumination is represented at the neurobiological level among youth with NSSI. METHOD We collected neuroimaging and rumination data from 39 adolescents with current or past NSSI and remitted major depression. Participants completed a rumination induction fMRI task, consisting of both rumination and distraction blocks. We examined brain activation associated with total lifetime NSSI in the context of the rumination versus distraction contrast. RESULTS Lifetime NSSI was associated with a greater discrepancy in activation during rumination relative to distraction conditions in clusters including the precuneus, posterior cingulate, superior, and middle frontal gyrus, and cerebellum. CONCLUSION Difficulties associated with rumination in adolescents with NSSI may be related to requiring greater cognitive effort to distract from ruminative content in addition to increased attention in the context of ruminative content. Increasing knowledge of neurobiological circuits and nodes associated with rumination and their relationship with NSSI may enable us to better tailor interventions that can facilitate lasting well-being and neurobiological change.

Abstract
ABSTRACT This study is a systematic review of characteristics and influencing factors of nonsuicidal self-injury behavior among adolescents with depressive disorder in China. PubMed, CNKI, WanFang Database, and VIP were searched for studies. Meta-analysis was performed using RevMan 5.1 software. Nineteen studies involving 707 subjects were included in the meta-analysis. Age, gender, only child or not, and residence were included in the analysis, of which age (I2 = 0%, p = 0.42) and residence (I2 = 0%, p = 0.84) were analyzed by fixed-effects model; gender (I2 = 75%, p = 0.003) and only child or not (I2 = 50%, p = 0.140) were analyzed by random-effects model. The evidence shows that, according to the common self-injury mode and location, the nonsuicidal self-injury behavior of young people with depressive disorder aged 15-18 years is paid attention to and guided, so as to achieve early detection and early diagnosis and treatment, and reduce the occurrence of serious harm.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Research on neural correlates in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) associated with self-injurious behavior has mainly been performed in adults. However, studies on adolescents are scarce. We aimed to investigate the activation and connectivity of the PFC between adolescents with self-injurious behavior (ASI) and psychiatric controls (PC) using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). METHODS We used an emotion recognition task during fNIRS to assess 37 adolescents (23 with self-injurious behavior and 14 PC) between June 2020 and October 2021 and compared connectivity and activation between the two groups. We also measured adverse childhood events (ACE, Adverse Childhood Experiences) and performed a correlation analysis of channel activation according to ACE total scores. RESULTS The difference in activation between the groups was not statistically significant. The connectivity of channel 6 was statistically significant. The interaction between channel 6 and the ACE total score showed statistical significance between the two groups(t[33] -2.61; p=0.014). The ASI group showed a negative correlation with the total ACE score. CONCLUSION This is the first study to investigate PFC connectivity using fNIRS in ASI. It has the implication of a novel attempt with a practically useful tool to uncover neurobiological differences among Korean adolescents.

Abstract
The functions of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) consist of social and emotional aspects (Social influence, Sensation seeking, Internal and External emotion regulation). Previous studies have indicated that dysfunction in reward-related brain structures especially the striatum might drive this habitual behavior. However, no studies to date have investigated the associations between striatum and different functions for adolescents engaging in NSSI behaviors. Here, we recruited 35 depressed adolescents with recent NSSI behaviors and 36 healthy controls and acquired structural brain images, depressive symptoms, social, academic and family environments assessments, in addition to NSSI functions in patients only. Subcortical volumes and cortical thickness were estimated with FreeSurfer. Mixed linear regressions were performed to examine associations between striatal structures (caudate, putamen, nucleus accumbens, pallidum) and NSSI functions, with age, sex, total intracranial volume, hemisphere and depression severity included as covariates. Effect of environmental factors and potential associations with cortical thickness and other subcortical volumes were also tested. We found that, among the four functions, external emotional regulation represented the main function for NSSI engagement. Increased external emotion regulation was significantly associated with smaller putamen volume. No environmental factors biased the association with putamen. No associations with other cortical or subcortical regions were observed. Our findings suggested that smaller putamen might be a biomarker of NSSI engagement for depressed adolescents when they regulated frustrated or angry emotions. The results have potentially clinical implications in early identification and brain intervention of NSSI in youth.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common problem associated with dangerous outcomes. Dysfunction of goal-directed behavioral control may contribute to NSSI. To test this, we used a novel experimental paradigm (Pavlovian-to-Instrumental Transfer, PIT) to test whether patients with NSSI utilize Pavlovian conditioned stimuli (CSs) during goal-directed control of ongoing behavior. METHODS Thirty-five depressed patients with NSSI (D-NSSI) and thirty-four healthy controls performed a PIT task. We measured the influence of positive and negative background CSs on instrumental responses for rewards. RESULTS The results showed that D-NSSI performed significantly lower PIT than controls, and PIT measures were negatively correlated with NSSI frequency. Furthermore, in a subset of patients exhibiting high levels of compulsivity, PIT positively moderated the relationship between compulsivity and NSSI frequency. CONCLUSIONS These results indicate that D-NSSI patients have difficulties in using different CSs to control ongoing behavior in a goal-directed manner, and the dysfunction of goal-directed control may contribute to NSSI.

Abstract
In order to deeply understand the specific patterns of volume, microstructure, and functional changes in Multiple System Atrophy patients with cerebellar ataxia syndrome (MSA-c), we perform the current study by simultaneously applying structural (T1-weighted imaging), Diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), functional (BOLD fMRI) and extended Network-Based Statistics (extended-NBS) analysis. Twenty-nine MSA-c type patients and twenty-seven healthy controls (HCs) were involved in this study. First, we analyzed the whole brain changes of volume, microstructure, and functional connectivity (FC) in MSA-c patients. Then, we explored the correlations between significant multimodal MRI features and the total Unified Multiple System Atrophy Rating Scale (UMSARS) scores. Finally, we searched for sensitive imaging biomarkers for the diagnosis of MSA-c using support vector machine (SVM) classifier. Results showed significant grey matter atrophy in cerebellum and white matter microstructural abnormalities in cerebellum, left fusiform gyrus, right precentral gyrus and lingual gyrus. Extended-NBS analysis found two significant different connected components, featuring altered functional connectivity related to left and right cerebellar sub-regions, respectively. Moreover, the reduced fiber bundle counts at right Cerebellum_3 (Cbe3) and decreased fractional anisotropy (FA) values at bilateral Cbe9 were negatively associated with total UMSARS scores. Finally, the significant features at left Cbe9, Cbe1, and Cbe7b were found to be useful as sensitive biomarkers to differentiate MSA-c from HCs according to the SVM analysis. These findings advanced our understanding of the neural pathophysiological mechanisms of MSA from the perspective of multimodal neuroimaging.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Major depressive disorder (MDD) with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)(MDD/NSSI) has been found to differ from simple MDD without NSSI (sMDD). This study analyzes the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) to explore the NSSI-relevant local neural activity, and uses functional connectivity (FC) analysis to explore the NSSI-relevant circuits corresponding to alterations in local regions in young adult patients with MDD/NSSI. METHODS A total of 54 patients with MDD/NSSI, 68 patients with sMDD, and 66 matched healthy controls (HCs) were recruited. ALFF and seed-based FC analyses were employed. The NSSI-relevant brain alteration and its associations with clinical variables were examined. RESULTS Compared with the sMDD group, the MDD/NSSI group showed higher ALFF in the right lingual gyrus and right middle occipital gyrus; lower ALFF in the right superior frontal gyrus; higher FC values between the right lingual gyrus and left precentral gyrus; and lower FC values between the right middle occipital gyrus and right paracentral gyrus. Within the MDD/NSSI group, ALFF values of the right superior frontal gyrus and right lingual gyrus were positively correlated with the frequency and severity of NSSI. LIMITATIONS The sample size was small, and the potential influence of medicine on brain activity was not excluded. CONCLUSIONS Our preliminary findings indicate that NSSI-relevant ALFF in the right lingual gyrus, right middle occipital gyrus, and right superior frontal gyrus, as well as the alteration FCs in corresponding brain circuits, may play an important role in the neural basis of MDD/NSSI.

Abstract
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a highly prevalent transdiagnostic symptom and risk marker for mental health problems among adolescents. Research on the neurobiological mechanisms underlying NSSI is needed to clarify the neural correlates associated with the behavior. We examined resting-state functional connectivity in n = 33 female adolescents aged 12–17 years engaging in NSSI, and in n = 29 age-matched healthy controls using graph theory. Mixed linear models were evaluated with the Bayes Factor to determine group differences on global and regional network measures and associations between network measures and clinical characteristics in patients. Adolescents engaging in NSSI demonstrated longer average characteristic path lengths and a smaller number of weighted hubs globally. Regional measures indicated lower efficiency and worse integration in (orbito)frontal regions and higher weighted coreness in the pericalcarine gyrus. In patients, higher orbitofrontal weighted local efficiency was associated with NSSI during the past month while lower pericalcarine nodal efficiency was associated with suicidal thoughts in the past year. Higher right but lower left pericalcarine weighted hubness was associated with more suicide attempts during the past year. Using a graph-based technique to identify functional connectivity networks, this study adds to the growing understanding of the neurobiology of NSSI.

Abstract
PURPOSE By exploring the gut-related microbiota differences of adolescents with non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) and depression (without NSSI) and healthy volunteers, we provide a theoretical basis for the prevention and control of NSSI in adolescents through intestinal microecological regulation. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 99 subjects were recruited in Guangdong Province, China, including 51 adolescents with NSSI (KD), 24 healthy adolescents (NOR1), and 24 depression adolescents without NSSI (NOR2). General clinical data and fecal samples were collected from all subjects, who were assessed using the NSSI Behavioral Questionnaire and the 24-item Hamilton Depression Scale. The taxonomic composition of the gut microbiota was determined using the 16S rDNA gene sequencing method. RESULTS There were significant differences in diversity between the KD and NOR1, and the species uniformity index of the KD according to the Shannon and Simpson indices was significantly reduced compared with that of the NOR1 (4.81 vs 5.21, p<0.01; 0.02 vs 0.01, p<0.05). The relative abundances were different among the KD, NOR1 and NOR2, as reflected at the taxonomic levels of class, order, family, genus, and species. Bacteroides were the dominant flora of the KD and NOR2, while Mitsuokella was the dominant flora that distinguished the KD from the NOR2. CONCLUSION We found that gut microbiota diversity was decreased in adolescents with NSSI, and the relative abundance was altered at different taxonomic levels. These results enrich the understanding of the relationship between NSSI and depression and the gut microbiota, Supporting that NSSI and depression are not homologous disorders. What is more, it establishes the basis for exploring the mechanisms of flora action in NSSI, providing a possible direction for NSSI to achieve a better prognosis and prevent relapse.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) may be a type of addiction, that is characterized by cue reactivity. We aimed to explore the behavioral performance and neural reactivity during exposure to self-injury cues in adolescents with NSSI and major depressive disorder (MDD). METHODS Eighteen MDD patients, 18 MDD patients with NSSI, and 19 healthy controls (HC) were recruited to perform a two-choice oddball paradigm. All subjects were 12-18 years old. Neutral cues and self-injury related cues separately served as deviant stimuli. Difference waves in N2 and P3 (N2d and P3d) were derived from deviant waves minus standard waves. Accuracy cost and reaction time (RT) cost were used as behavioral indexes, while the N2d and P3d were used as electrophysiological indexes; the N2d reflects early conflict detection, and the P3d reflects the process of response inhibition. RESULTS No significant main effects of group or cue or an effect of their interaction were observed on accuracy cost and P3d latency. For RT cost, N2d amplitude, and N2d latency, there was a significant main effect of cue. For P3d amplitude, there was a significant main effect of cue and a significant group × cue interaction. In the NSSI group, the P3d amplitude with self-injury cues was significantly larger than that with neutral cues. However, there was no such effect in the MDD and HC groups. CONCLUSIONS Adolescents with NSSI showed altered neural reactivity during exposure to self-injury cue. Further studies with larger sample sizes are needed to confirm our results.

Abstract
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a common but poorly understood phenomenon in adolescents. This study examined the Sustained Threat domain in female adolescents with a continuum of NSSI severity (N = 142). Across NSSI lifetime frequency and NSSI severity groups (No + Mild NSSI, Moderate NSSI, Severe NSSI), we examined physiological, self-reported and observed stress during the Trier Social Stress Test; amygdala volume; amygdala responses to threat stimuli; and resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) between amygdala and medial prefrontal cortex (mPFC). Severe NSSI showed a blunted pattern of cortisol response, despite elevated reported and observed stress during TSST. Severe NSSI showed lower amygdala-mPFC RSFC; follow-up analyses suggested that this was more pronounced in those with a history of suicide attempt for both moderate and severe NSSI. Moderate NSSI showed elevated right amygdala activation to threat; multiple regressions showed that, when considered together with low amygdala-mPFC RSFC, higher right but lower left amygdala activation predicted NSSI severity. Patterns of interrelationships among Sustained Threat measures varied substantially across NSSI severity groups, and further by suicide attempt history. Study limitations include the cross-sectional design, missing data, and sampling biases. Our findings highlight the value of multilevel approaches in understanding the complexity of neurobiological mechanisms in adolescent NSSI.

Abstract
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) is prevalent and affects mainly the youth population. It is prospectively associated with suicide attempts, making it a target for suicide prevention. Recently, several studies have investigated neural pathways of NSSI using neuroimaging. However, there is a lack of systematized appraisal of these findings. This systematic review aims to identify and summarize the main neuroimaging findings of NSSI in youth. We followed PRISMA statement guidelines and searched MEDLINE, APA PsycInfo, and Google Scholar databases for neuroimaging studies, irrespective of imaging modality, specifically investigating NSSI in samples with a mean age of up to 25 years old. Quality assessment was made using the Newcastle–Ottawa and Joanna Briggs Institute scales. The initial search retrieved 3030 articles; 21 met inclusion criteria, with a total of 938 subjects. Eighteen studies employed functional neuroimaging techniques such as resting-state and task-based fMRI (emotional, interpersonal exposure/social exclusion, pain, reward, and cognitive processing paradigms). Three studies reported on structural MRI. An association of NSSI behavior and altered emotional processing in cortico-limbic neurocircuitry was commonly reported. Additionally, alterations in potential circuits involving pain, reward, interpersonal, self-processing, and executive function control processes were identified. NSSI has complex and diverse neural underpinnings. Future longitudinal studies are needed to understand its developmental aspects better.

Abstract
There is no definitive neural marker of suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) or nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), and relative to adults, research in youth is more limited. This comprehensive review focuses on magnetic resonance imaging studies reporting structural and functional neural correlates of STBs and NSSI in youth to 1) elucidate shared and independent neural alternations, 2) clarify how developmental processes may interact with neural alterations to confer risk, and 3) provide recommendations based on convergence across studies. Forty-seven articles were reviewed (STBs = 27; NSSI = 20), and notably, 63% of STB articles and 45% of NSSI articles were published in the previous 3 years. Structural magnetic resonance imaging research suggests reduced volume in the ventral prefrontal and orbitofrontal cortices among youth reporting STBs, and there is reduced anterior cingulate cortex volume related to STBs and NSSI. With regard to functional alterations, blunted striatal activation may characterize STB and NSSI youth, and there is reduced frontolimbic task-based connectivity in suicide ideators and attempters. Resting-state functional connectivity findings highlight reduced positive connectivity between the default mode network and salience network in attempters and show that self-injurers exhibit frontolimbic alterations. Together, suicidal and nonsuicidal behaviors are related to top-down and bottom-up neural alterations, which may compromise approach, avoidance, and regulatory systems. Future longitudinal research with larger and well-characterized samples, especially those integrating ambulatory stress assessments, will be well positioned to identify novel targets that may improve early identification and treatment for youth with STBs and NSSI.

Abstract
Suicidal ideation (SI) and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) are two distinct yet often co-occurring risk factors for suicide deaths in adolescents. Elucidating the neurobiological patterns that specifically characterize SI and NSSI in adolescents is needed to inform the use of these markers in intervention studies and to develop brain-based treatment targets. Here, we clinically assessed 70 adolescents-49 adolescents with depression and 21 healthy controls-to determine SI and NSSI history. Twenty-eight of the depressed adolescents had a history of SI and 29 had a history of NSSI (20 overlapping). All participants underwent a resting-state fMRI scan. We compared groups in network coherence of subdivisions of the central executive network (CEN), default mode network (DMN), and salience network (SN). We also examined group differences in between-network connectivity and explored brain-behavior correlations. Depressed adolescents with SI and with NSSI had lower coherence in the ventral DMN compared to those without SI or NSSI, respectively, and healthy controls (all ps < 0.043, uncorrected). Depressed adolescents with NSSI had lower coherence in the anterior DMN and in insula-SN (all ps < 0.030, uncorrected), and higher CEN-DMN connectivity compared to those without NSSI and healthy controls (all ps < 0.030, uncorrected). Lower network coherence in all DMN subnetworks and insula-SN were associated with higher past-month SI and NSSI (all ps < 0.001, uncorrected). Thus, in our sample, both SI and NSSI are related to brain networks associated with difficulties in self-referential processing and future planning, while NSSI specifically is related to brain networks associated with disruptions in interoceptive awareness.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Beta-endorphin (BE) has been suggested to play a central role as to why people engage in NSSI. To our knowledge, no study has systematically assessed this potential relationship in adolescents with NSSI. METHODS 94 adolescents with NSSI (according to DSM-5 criteria) and 35 healthy controls (HC) were enrolled. All participants received heat pain stimulation, with pain threshold and tolerance measured in °C. Plasma BE levels were assessed. Sociodemographic and clinical characteristics were obtained via semi-structured interviews and self-report questionnaires. RESULTS Adolescents with NSSI showed increased pain thresholds (t(127)=2.071, p=.040), lower pain intensity (t(114)==2.122, p=.036) and lower plasma BE levels (t127==3.182, p=.002) compared to HC. Groups did not differ on pain tolerance (t(127)=0.911, p=.364). Greater pain threshold correlated positively with borderline personality disorder (BPD) symptoms (r=0.182, p=.039), while pain intensity (r=-0.206, p=.033) and BE levels (r=-0.246, p=.007) correlated negatively with depression severity. No significant relationship was found between pain threshold and plasma BE (r=-0.013, p=.882). LIMITATIONS Future studies should implement repeated plasma BE measures to assess BE release in association with pain in NSSI. Validity of plasma BE measures compared to central measures should be considered. Assessing the association between pain sensitivity (PS) and BE in a naturalistic setting presents a promising avenue for future research in NSSI. CONCLUSIONS Findings support both reduced PS and basal opioid deficiency as independent biological correlates and potential risk-factors for NSSI. Further longitudinal and experimental studies are needed to investigate the role of BE levels and PS as well as their potential association.

Abstract
Background: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), which commonly occurs during adolescence, often co-occurs with major depressive disorder (MDD). However, the underlying neurobiological mechanisms in adolescents with MDD who engage in NSSI remain unclear. The current study examined the aberrant local neural activity in certain areas of the visual regions and the default mode network (DMN) and the resting-state functional connectivity (rs-FC) in changed brain regions in adolescents with MDD who engage in NSSI and adolescents with MDD only. Methods: A total of 67 adolescents with MDD were divided into two groups based on their NSSI behavior: the NSSI group (n = 31) and an age-, gender-, and education-matched MDD group (n = 36). The Hamilton Depression Rating Scale (HAMD) was used to assess the severity of MDD. Amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF) analysis was used to detect alterations in local neural activity. Brain regions with aberrant neural activity were considered regions of interest (ROI). ALFF-based rs-FC analysis was used to further explore the underlying changes in connectivity between ROI and other areas in the NSSI group. Correlation analyses were performed to examine the relationship between neural changes and clinical characteristics. Results: There was no significant difference in HAMD scores between the two groups. ALFF analysis revealed that, compared to adolescents with MDD only, adolescents with MDD who engaged in NSSI displayed significantly enhanced neural activity in the right fusiform gyrus (FFG. R) and the right median cingulate and paracingulate gyri (DCG. R). Significantly reduced rs-FC of the FFG. R-bilateral medial orbital of the superior frontal gyrus (ORBsupmed. L/R)/bilateral medial superior frontal gyrus (SFGmed. L/R), FFG. R-bilateral posterior cingulate gyrus (PCG. L/R), DCG. R-left pallidum (PAL. L), DCG. R-right superior temporal gyrus (STG. R), and DCG. R-right postcentral gyrus (PoCG. R)/right inferior parietal lobule (IPL. R) was found in adolescents with MDD who were engaged in NSSI. Additionally, no significant correlations were observed between ALFF or rs-FC values and the HAMD scores between the two groups. Limitations: Owing to the cross-sectional design, the alterations in ALFF and rs-FC values in the FFG. R and DCG. R could not demonstrate that it was a state or feature in adolescents with MDD who engaged in NSSI. Additionally, the sample size was relatively small. Conclusions: This study highlights changes in regional brain activity and remote connectivity in the FFG. R and DCG. R in adolescents with MDD who engage in NSSI. This could provide a new perspective for further studies on the neurobiological mechanism of NSSI behavior in adolescents with MDD.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE Findings from prior research on reward sensitivity in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI) have been mixed. Childhood maltreatment is an independent risk factor for NSSI and for hyposensitivity to rewards. This study aimed to disentangle the role of reward sensitivity as a predictor of NSSI for those with an elevated severity of childhood maltreatment. METHOD In a diverse undergraduate sample (N = 586), trait reward sensitivity (i.e., behavioral approach system subscales) and the severity of maltreatment were assessed as predictors of a lifetime history of NSSI. In a subset of this sample (n = 51), predictors of NSSI urge intensity were measured using ecological momentary assessment. RESULTS Individuals with elevated maltreatment who reported less positive responsiveness to rewards were more likely to have a lifetime history of NSSI. Those with elevated maltreatment who reported a lower likelihood to approach rewards experienced more intense NSSI urges across the ten-day observation period. However, those with elevated maltreatment who reported a greater likelihood to approach rewards experienced less intense NSSI urges. CONCLUSIONS The role of reward sensitivity as a cognitive risk factor for NSSI varies depending on childhood maltreatment history. Findings indicate that, for those with elevated maltreatment, hypersensitivity to approaching rewards may decrease risk for NSSI urges.

Abstract
Adolescence is the time of onset of many psychiatric disorders. Half of pediatric patients present with comorbid psychiatric disorders that complicate both their medical and psychiatric care. Currently, diagnosis and treatment decisions are based on symptoms. The field urgently needs brain-based diagnosis and personalized care. Neuroimaging can shed light on how aberrations in brain circuits might underlie psychiatric disorders and their development in adolescents. In this perspective article, we summarize recent MRI literature that provides insights into development of psychiatric disorders in adolescents. We specifically focus on studies of brain structural and functional connectivity. Ninety-six included studies demonstrate the potential of MRI to assess psychiatrically relevant constructs, diagnose psychiatric disorders, predict their development or predict response to treatment. Limitations of the included studies are discussed, and recommendations for future research are offered. We also present a vision for the role that neuroimaging may play in pediatrics and primary care in the future: a routine neuropsychological and neuropsychiatric imaging (NPPI) protocol for adolescent patients, which would include a 30-min brain scan, a quality control and safety read of the scan, followed by computer-based calculation of the structural and functional brain network metrics that can be compared to the normative data by the pediatrician. We also perform a cost-benefit analysis to support this vision and provide a roadmap of the steps required for this vision to be implemented.

Abstract
Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious clinical problem that is common in adolescents. Novel, biologically-informed approaches for treating NSSI in adolescents are needed to prevent negative outcomes such as chronic NSSI and future suicide attempts. N-acetylcysteine (NAC) has been used successfully to address other conditions that involve repetitive maladaptive behaviors and may have utility in addressing NSSI. This study explored neural circuit changes following an open-label, 8-week trial of NAC in female adolescents with NSSI. We measured whole-brain resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) of the amygdala and the nucleus accumbens before and after treatment using resting-state functional neuroimaging. Usable neuroimaging data from both pre- and post-treatment were available for 18 participants. Reduction in NSSI frequency was associated with a decrease in left amygdala RSFC with right supplementary motor area (SMA), but with an increase in right amygdala RSFC with right inferior frontal cortex. For nucleus accumbens, a reduction in NSSI frequency was associated with a decrease in connectivity between right nucleus accumbens and left superior medial frontal cortex. We also report change in similar circuits accompanying clinical improvement in depression and global psychopathology measures. These preliminary findings suggest amygdala and nucleus accumbens-based circuits as potential treatment targets, and set the stage for future research designed to confirm these neural targets using randomized, placebo-controlled designs to confirm clinical efficacy and mechanisms of effect.

Abstract
Clinical science has benefited tremendously from taking seriously the proposition that putatively maladaptive behaviors serve psychological functions, prominently among these affect regulation (AR). These functionalist accounts have not only advanced basic clinical science, but also formed the bedrock for the development of effective treatments. Drawing heavily on reinforcement learning theory, we aim to elucidate functional relationships between maladaptive behavior and AR. Specifically, we take the view that maladaptive behaviors are frequently motivated and reinforced by hedonic AR functions (i.e., decreasing negative affect and increasing positive affect) but are also susceptible to becoming stimulus-bound habits. We review empirical evidence related to one such behavior, nonsuicidal self-injury. We close with a brief reflection on future directions. Abstract
This meta-analysis aims to evaluate whether the extant literature justifies any definitive conclusions about whether and how SITBs may be associated with brain differences. A total of 77 papers (N = 4,903) published through January 1, 2019 that compared individuals with and without SITBs were included, resulting in 882 coordinates. A pooled meta-analysis assessing for general risk for SITBs indicated a lack of convergence on structural differences. When all types of control groups were considered, functional differences in the left posterior cingulate cortex (PCC), right amygdala, left hippocampus, and right thalamus were significant using multi-level kernel density analysis (pcorrected < 0.05) but nonsignificant using activation-likelihood estimation. These results suggest that a propensity for internally-oriented, emotional processing coupled with under-active pain processing could potentially underlie SITBs, but additional research is needed to test this possibility. Separate analyses for types of SITBs suggested that the brain differences associated with deliberate self-harm were consistent with the overall findings. Checkered moderator effects were detected. Overall, the meta-analytic evidence was not robust. More studies are needed to reach definitive conclusions about whether SITBs are associated with brain differences.

Abstract
In healthy individuals, stimuli associated with injury (such as those depicting blood or wounds) tend to evoke negative responses on both self-report and psychophysiological measures. Such an instinctive aversion makes sense from an evolutionary perspective. However, to engage in nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), this natural barrier must be overcome. The Benefits and Barriers model of NSSI predicts that people who engage in NSSI will show diminished aversion to NSSI-related stimuli compared to controls who do not engage in NSSI. We tested this hypothesis in a pilot study assessing 30 adults, 15 of whom reported current skin cutting and 15 of whom had no history of NSSI. Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected while participants viewed neutral, positive, and negative images selected from the International Affective Picture System. Participants also viewed NSSI images depicting razors, scalpels, or wounds caused by cutting. Compared to healthy control (HC) participants, the NSSI group showed decreased amygdala and increased cingulate cortex (CC) and orbitofrontal cortex (OFC) activation to NSSI and negative images. They also showed increased amygdalar and OFC activation to positive images. Neither the control group nor the NSSI group demonstrated significant activation within regions more typically associated with reward during any of the conditions; however, positive and negative affect ratings collected throughout the course of the task suggested that none of the affective conditions were viewed as rewarding. Although preliminary, these findings are suggestive of reduced limbic and greater cortical processing of NSSI stimuli in those with a history of this behavior. This has potentially important implications for current models of NSSI as well as for its treatment.

Abstract
Introduction: Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a rapidly increasing mental health problem that requires more clinical attention. In this study, we aimed to explore the biobehavioral markers of NSSI in participants with mood disorders. Methods: A total of 45 participants with mood disorders (bipolar I, II, and major depressive disorder) were included in the study. Behavioral impulsivity was measured using the immediate memory task (IMT)/delayed memory task (DMT) and the go-no-go (GNG) tests. Plasma levels of tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin 1 beta (IL-1 β), and interleukin 6 (IL-6) and resting-state quantitative electroencephalography (qEEG) were measured. Results: The NSSI group had shorter GNG reaction time (GNG-RT) and higher TNF-α levels compared to the non-NSSI group. TNF-α was positively correlated with frontal theta power. In addition, GNG-RT showed a significant positive association with frontal alpha activity. Conclusion: NSSI in mood disorders was associated with increased behavioral impulsivity and greater inflammation. Increased pro-inflammatory cytokines were associated with frontal theta power. Increased inflammation might change major neurotransmitter metabolism, which eventually affects frontal function and decreases response inhibition. Further studies to explore their causal relationship are warranted.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a serious and common phenomenon which has been linked with emotion or affect regulation. The capacity for top-down emotion regulation has also been linked to vagal tone. Vagal tone is known to be low in groups with a propensity to engage in NSSI. HYPOTHESIS Some forms of NSSI, both direct and indirect, may result in vagal stimulation. The resulting increase in vagal tone may be linked to activation of prefrontal areas and improved top-down emotion regulation. This may be a maintaining factor in NSSI. EVALUATION Cutting with the sight of blood, the use of ligatures, eating disorders and risky sexual behaviour, behaviours that could be considered direct or indirect forms of NSSI, are all plausible methods of vagal self-stimulation. CONCLUSION NSSI may increase vagal tone. This may result in improved top down emotion regulation and result in a calmer emotional state. These vagal effects may be important maintaining factors in self-harm. This has important implications for the study and possible management of a common and serious issue.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Considerable patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) comorbid with anxious symptoms, referred as anxious depression. The neural structural basis of this MDD specifier remains largely unknown. METHODS 104 patients with anxious depression, 57 MDD patients without significant anxious symptoms, and 160 healthy controls from single research center participated in the study with age and sex well-matched. We investigated gray matter alterations in anxious and non-anxious depression, explored different brain alterations between these two patient groups, and possible relationships between brain structural parameter and clinical information in patients. RESULTS Gray matter volumes differed in the right inferior frontal gyrus, right orbital frontal gyrus, left postcentral gyrus, bilateral culmen and left cuneus among the three groups. Anxious depression had smaller gray matter volumes in the right inferior frontal gyrus and orbital frontal gyrus relative to both non-anxious depression and healthy controls. Patients with anxious depression presented larger gray matter volumes in the left postcentral gyrus than non-anxious depression, and larger gray matter volumes in the left cuneus than healthy controls. In addition, both patient groups showed larger gray matter volumes in bilateral culmen relative to healthy controls. Gray matter volumes in the left postcentral gyrus were positively associated with overall depression severity and anxiety factor scores in anxious depression. CONCLUSION Our study revealed brain structural abnormalities in emotional regulation and sensory processing regions of anxious depression, which may suggested distinct neurobiological mechanisms of this MDD specifier and could help explain different clinical manifestations in anxious depression from pure depression.

Abstract
Self-injurious behaviors and suicide attempts are more frequent in prison settings than in the general population and represent a crucial problem. The aims of this work are to assess the prevalence of self-injurious behaviors and suicide attempts in an Italian prison setting, to determine whether inmates could be differentiated based on profiles of psychological distress and impulsiveness, and to assess the predictive power of the proposed profiles. A sample of 1422 male inmates of a north Italian penitentiary was assessed upon admission with a clinical interview and completed a set of self-report questionnaires to assess psychological distress and impulsiveness; the number of self-injurious behaviors and suicide attempts occurring in the first year of detention was recorded. A cluster analysis approach was used. Prevalence of self-Injurious behaviors and suicide attempts is similar to what has been observed in previous work. Cluster analysis revealed four clusters: dysregulated (high impulsivity and distress), impulsive (high impulsivity and mean distress), mildly distressed (mean impulsivity and moderate distress) and well-balanced (low impulsivity and distress). The four clusters help to discriminate subjects more at risk of self-injurious behaviors and suicide attempts and are confirmed by the inclusion of risk factors such as marital status and relatives'/social support. Clinical implications are discussed.

Abstract
Adolescence is a critical developmental period marked by an increase in risk behaviors, including nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). Heightened reward-related brain activation and relatively limited recruitment of prefrontal regions contribute to the initiation of risky behaviors in adolescence. However, neural reward processing has not been examined among adolescents who are at risk for future engagement for NSSI specifically, but who have yet to actually engage in this behavior. In the current fMRI study (N = 71), we hypothesized that altered reward processing would be associated with adolescents' thoughts of NSSI. Results showed that NSSI youth exhibited heightened activation in the bilateral putamen in response to a monetary reward. This pattern of findings suggests that heightened neural sensitivity to reward is associated with thoughts of NSSI in early adolescence. Implications for prevention are discussed.

Abstract
BACKGROUND 25-35% of adolescents in random samples drawn from German schools have been found to have manifested at least one episode of nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI). The prevalence in samples from child and adolescent psychiatric clinics is approximately 50%. NSSI can arise as a symptom in the setting of various types of mental illness. METHODS This review is based on a selective literature search carried out in the PubMed, PsycINFO, and Cochrane Library databases, with special consideration of regional study samples. RESULTS NSSI is usually resorted to as a dysfunctional coping strategy for emotional regulation. The main risk factors for NSSI include bullying, accompanying mental illnesses, and a history of abuse and neglect in childhood. Neurobiological studies have shown abnormal stress processing in persons with NSSI and an elevated pain threshold in persons with repetitive NSSI. Psychotherapeutic interventions of various kinds lessen the frequency of NSSI; to date, no particular type of psychotherapy has been found to be clearly superior to the others. Randomized controlled trials have revealed small to moderate effects from dialectic-behavioral therapy and mentalization-based therapy in adolescent patients. No psychoactive drug has yet been found to possess specific efficacy against NSSI in adolescents. CONCLUSION The first ever German-language clinical guidelines for the treatment of NSSI have now been issued. Psychotherapy is the treatment of first choice. More research is needed so that subgroups with different disease courses can be more clearly defined.

Abstract
There is a high prevalence of non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) amongst adolescents worldwide and therefore an urgency to investigate the underlying mechanisms that may facilitate such behaviours. This study aimed to investigate neurobiological alterations, specifically in regional brain volumes of the frontolimbic system, in adolescents engaging in NSSI in comparison to healthy controls. Regional grey matter volumes were compared between 29 adolescent female patients who presented with incidents of NSSI on ≥5 days within the last 12 months (DSM-5 criteria for NSSI) and 21 healthy age, gender and education matched controls who had never received any psychiatric diagnosis/treatment, or engaged in NSSI. Significant group effects in regional brain volumes were observed in insula, and a suggested change in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC), while controlling for total segmented volume. Additionally, ACC volume showed a significant association with past suicide attempts, where estimated marginal means showed even smaller ACC volume in adolescents engaging in NSSI with a history of suicide attempt in comparison to those with no history of suicide attempt, including healthy controls. This study provides the first evidence of volumetric changes in adolescents engaging in NSSI and a potential neurobiological link between NSSI and suicide attempt.

Abstract
Nonsuicidal self-injury (NSSI), deliberate behavior resulting in self-inflicted damage to oneself, is common, particularly among female adolescents, and may be a form of maladaptive emotion regulation. Cognitive interference, a specific type of processing associated with inhibiting prepotent responses in favor of less automatic ones, is utilized in treatment strategies to shift patients' thoughts and behaviors away from maladaptive responses and replace them with more adaptive ones. We examined cognitive interference processing using the Multi-Source Interference Task (MSIT) in females with NSSI behavior (n=15) and healthy control females (n=15). Functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data were collected concurrently. Results revealed similar between-group performance on the MSIT; however, women with NSSI behavior exhibited altered patterns of neural activation during the MSIT. Specifically, the NSSI group demonstrated increased cingulate cortex (CC) and decreased dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC) activation compared to the control group. Further, within the NSSI group, DLPFC activation inversely correlated with emotional reactivity and self-reported impulsivity, suggesting that decreased DLPFC activation is associated with poorer emotional control and increased impulsivity. Taken together, these results indicate that women with NSSI behavior utilize different cortical areas during cognitive interference processing, which may have broader implications regarding the treatment efficacy of cognitive-based therapies.
