PM₂.₅-bound oxygenated PAHs, nitro-PAHs and parent-PAHs from the atmosphere of a Chinese megacity: seasonal variation, sources and cancer risk assessment

Source apportionment of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), and their associated long-term health risks in a major European city

Many studies have drawn attention to the associations of oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (OPAHs) with harmful health effects, advocating for their systematic monitoring alongside simple PAHs to better understand the aerosol carcinogenic potential in urban areas. To address this need, this study conducted an extensive PM2.5 sampling campaign in Athens, Greece, at the Thissio Supersite of the National Observatory of Athens, from December 2018 to July 2021, aiming to characterize the levels and variability of polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs), perform source apportionment, and assess health risk. Cumulative OPAH concentrations (Σ-OPAHs) were in the same range as Σ-PAHs (annual average 4.2 and 5.6 ng m-3, respectively). They exhibited a common seasonal profile with enhanced levels during the heating seasons, primarily attributed to residential wood burning (RWB). The episodic impact of biomass burning was also observed during a peri-urban wildfire event in May 2021, when PAH and OPAH concentrations increased by a factor of three compared to the monthly average. The study period also included the winter 2020-2021 COVID-19 lockdown, during which PAH and OPAH levels decreased by >50 % compared to past winters. Positive matrix factorization (PMF) source apportionment, based on a carbonaceous aerosol speciation dataset, identified PAC sources related to RWB, local traffic (gasoline vehicles) and urban traffic (including diesel emissions), as well as an impact of regional organic aerosol. Despite its seasonal character, RWB accounted for nearly half of Σ-PAH and over two-thirds of Σ-OPAH concentrations. Using the estimated source profiles and contributions, the source-specific carcinogenic potency of the studied PACs was calculated, revealing that almost 50 % was related to RWB. These findings underscore the urgent need to regulate domestic biomass burning at a European level, which can provide concrete benefits for improving urban air quality, towards the new stricter EU standards, and reducing long-term health effects.

Nitro-PAHs: Occurrences, ecological consequences, and remediation strategies for environmental restoration

Nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) are persistent pollutants that have been introduced into the environment as a result of human activities. They are produced when PAHs undergo oxidation and are highly resistant to degradation, resulting in prolonged exposure and significant health risks for wildlife and humans. Nitro-PAHs' potential to induce cancer and mutations has raised concerns about their harmful effects. Furthermore, their ability to accumulate in the food chain seriously threatens the ecosystem and human health. Moreover, nitro-PAHs can disrupt the normal functioning of the endocrine system, leading to reproductive and developmental problems in humans and other organisms. Reducing nitro-PAHs in the environment through source management, physical removal, and chemical treatment is essential to mitigate the associated environmental and human health risks. Recent studies have focused on improving nitro-PAHs' phytoremediation by incorporating microorganisms and biostimulants. Microbes can break down nitro-PAHs into less harmful substances, while biostimulants can enhance plant growth and metabolic activity. By combining these elements, the effectiveness of phytoremediation for nitro-PAHs can be increased. This study aimed to investigate the impact of introducing microbial and biostimulant agents on the phytoremediation process for nitro-PAHs and identify potential solutions for addressing the environmental risks associated with these pollutants.

Spatiotemporal Gradients of PAH Concentrations in Greek Cities and Associated Exposure Impacts

To study the spatiotemporal variability of particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and assess their carcinogenic potential in six contrasting urban environments in Greece, a total of 305 filter samples were collected and analyzed. Sampling sites included a variety of urban background, traffic (Athens, Ioannina and Heraklion), rural (Xanthi) and near-port locations (Piraeus and Volos). When considering the sum of 16 U.S. EPA priority PAHs, as well as that of the six EU-proposed members, average concentrations observed across locations during summer varied moderately (0.4-2.2 ng m-3) and independently of the population of each site, with the highest values observed in the areas of Piraeus and Volos that are affected by port and industrial activities. Winter levels were significantly higher and more spatially variable compared to summer, with the seasonal enhancement ranging from 7 times in Piraeus to 98 times in Ioannina, indicating the large impact of PAH emissions from residential wood burning. Regarding benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), an IARC Group 1 carcinogen and the only EU-regulated PAH, the winter/summer ratios were 24-33 in Athens, Volos, Heraklion and Xanthi; 60 in Piraeus; and 480 in Ioannina, which is afflicted by severe wood-burning pollution events. An excellent correlation was observed between organic carbon (OC) and benzo(a)pyrene (BaP) during the cold period at all urban sites (r2 > 0.8) with stable BaP/OC slopes (0.09-0.14 × 10-3), highlighting the potential use of OC as a proxy for the estimation of BaP in winter conditions. The identified spatiotemporal contrasts, which were explored for the first time for PAHs at such a scale in the Eastern Mediterranean, provide important insights into sources and controlling atmospheric conditions and reveal large deviations in exposure risks among cities that raise the issue of environmental injustice on a national level.

Exploration and comparison of the relationship between PAHs and ROS in PM2.5 emitted from multiple anthropogenic sources in the Guanzhong Plain, China

Anthropogenic emissions have emerged as an important source of urban atmospheric PM2.5, exacerbating air pollution and the associated health implications. This study analyses PM2.5, originating from major anthropogenic sources (industries, motor vehicles, and solid-fuel combustion for domestic applications) in the Guanzhong Plain in China, along with the parent- (p-), alkylated- (a-), and oxygenated- (o-) polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels in PM2.5. Industrial emissions are mainly characterised by high abundances of benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF), benzo[k]fluoranthene (BkF), and benz[a]fluoranthene (BaF). The 4-ring p-PAHs, such as fluoranthene (FLA), pyrene (PYR), benzo[a]anthracene (BaA), and chrysene (CHR) proportions and the diagnostic ratios of indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene (IcdP)/[IcdP + benzo[ghi]perylene (BghiP)] and 1-acenaphthenone (1ACO)/[1ACO + 9-fluorenone (9FO)] in motor vehicle emission PM2.5 were higher than the other sources. Household solid fuel combustion features high proportions of methylnaphthalene (M-NAP), i.e., 2 M-NAP and 1 M-NAP and 3-ring p-PAHs. Acenaphthylene (ACY), acenaphthene (ACE), anthracene (ANT), 1,4-chrysenequinone (1,4CHRQ), and reactive oxygen species (ROS) were positively correlated among the three anthropogenic sources. Moreover, the correlations between other PAHs and ROS varied significantly among the three sources. As mixed and compound organic pollutants, 2- and 3-ring p-PAHs were more positively correlated with the ROS activity of household solid fuel combustion sources compared with industrial and motor vehicle sources. Based on the relative contribution of these three sources to PAHs in PM2.5, we estimated the cancer risks of males and females in the Guanzhong area to be 2.95 × 10-6 and 2.87 × 10-6, respectively, exceeding the safety threshold of 1 × 10-6. This study provides a basic dataset for conducting a refined source apportionment of PM2.5 and a scientific basis for further understanding the relationship between PM2.5, PAHs, and ROS in northern China.

Global trade-driven transfer of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon emissions and associated human inhalation exposure risk

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are of significant public concern because of their toxicity and long-range transport potential. Extensive studies have been conducted to explore the source-receptor relationships of PAHs via atmospheric transport. However, the transfer of trade-driven regional and global PAHs is poorly understood. This study estimated the virtual PAHs emission transfer embodied in global trade from 2004 to 2014 and simulated the impact of international trade on global contamination and associated human inhalation exposure risk of PAHs. Results show that trade-driven PAHs flowed primarily from developed to less-developed regions, particularly in those regions with intensive heavy industries and transportation. As the result, international trade resulted in an increasing risk of lung cancer induced by exposure to PAHs (27.8% in China, 14.7% in India, and 11.3% in Southeast Asia). In contrast, we found decreasing risks of PAHs-induced lung cancer in Western Europe (63.2%) and the United States (45.9%) in 2004. Our findings indicate that final demand and emission intensity are the key driving factors contributing to rising and falling consumption-based PAHs emissions and related health risk respectively. The results could provide a useful reference for global collaboration in the reduction of PAHs pollution and related health risks.

Benzo[b]fluoranthene induces male reproductive toxicity and apoptosis via Akt-Mdm2-p53 signaling axis in mouse Leydig cells: Integrating computational toxicology and experimental approaches

This study aims to explore the male reproductive toxicity of Benzo[b]fluoranthene (BbF) and related mechanisms. The results of computational toxicology analysis indicated male reproductive toxicity of BbF was related to apoptosis of Leydig cells and that Akt/p53 pathway might play a key role. In experiments, BbF induced testosterone decline, decreased concentration and motility of sperm and aggravated testicular pathological injury in mice. Besides, BbF led to apoptosis in Leydig cells, and decreased expressions of p-Akt and Bcl2, while improving the expressions of p53, Bax and Cleaved Caspase-3 in vivo and in vitro. Further, compared with BbF group, Akt activator SC79 significantly reduced cell apoptosis rate, improved cell viability, promoted the expressions of p-Akt and p-Mdm2, and reversed the above molecular expressions. Similarly, p53 inhibitor Pifithrin-α also significantly enhanced the cell vitality, alleviated the apoptosis of TM3 cells induced by BbF, and decreased the expressions of Bax and Cleaved Caspase-3, with the up-regulation of Bcl2. To sum up, by inhibiting Akt-Mdm2 signaling, BbF activated the p53-mediated mitochondrial apoptosis pathway, further inducing the apoptosis of Leydig cells, therefore resulting in testosterone decline and male reproductive damage. Besides, this study provided a valid mode integrating computational toxicology and experimental approaches in toxicity testing.

Hydrocarbons in the atmospheric gas phase of a coastal city in Tunisia: Levels, gas-particle partitioning, and health risk assessment

Many studies have focused on aliphatic hydrocarbons and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs and PAHs) in different environmental compartments, especially atmospheric particles (aerosols), due to their adverse effects on the environment and human health. However, much less information is currently available on the content of AHs and PAHs in the atmospheric gas phase, which is a major reservoir of volatile and photoreactive compounds. Here, for the first time, we assessed the levels, gas-particle partitioning, human health risks and seasonal variations of AHs and PAHs in the atmospheric gas-phase of Bizerte city (Tunisia, North Africa) over a one-year period (March 2015-January 2016). Σ₃₄PAH concentration in the gas phase over the period ranged from 6.7 to 90.6 ng m^-3 and on average was 2.5 times higher in the cold season than in the warm season. Σ₂₈AH concentration in the gas phase over the period ranged from 14.0 to 35.9 ng m^-3, with no clear seasonal variations. In the gas phase, hydrocarbons were dominated by low-molecular-weight (LMW) compounds, i.e. 3- and 4-ring for PAHs and < n-C₂₄ for AHs. Gas-phase concentrations of PAHs and AHs accounted for up to 80 % of the total (gas + particle phases) atmospheric concentrations of PAHs and AHs. Further analysis of gas-particle partitioning showed that LMW hydrocarbons preferential accumulated in the gas phase, and that gas-particle partitioning was not in equilibrium but dominated by absorption processes into the aerosol organic matter. Benzo[a]pyrene toxic equivalency quotient (BaP-TEQ) in the gas phase represented on average 37 % of the total atmospheric BaP-TEQ concentration, which was always higher in the cold season. Atmospheric gas is a significant factor in the risks of cancer associated with inhalation of ambient air. The Monte Carlo simulation-based exposure assessment model predicted that outdoor air exposure to PAHs does not pose a cancer risk to infants, but the children, adolescent, and adult populations may face a lower cancer risk during the warm season and a higher risk in the cold season.

Distribution, sources, and health risk of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives in the watershed: the case of Yitong River, China

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and substituted PAHs (SPAHs) are persistent organic pollutants prevalent globally, and SPAHs have received widespread attention in recent years due to their stronger toxicity and carcinogenicity compared to PAHs. There is a lack of systematic examination of PAHs and their derivatives in watersheds. Thus, to clarify the current status, possible sources, and potential risks of PAHs and their derivatives in watersheds, a study was conducted on Yitong River in China. The results showed that the concentrations of ∑PAHs, ∑OPAHs, and ∑NPAHs ranged from 297.9-1158.3 ng/L, 281.1-587.2 ng/L, and 65.7-269.1 ng/L, respectively. Diagnostic ratio analysis showed that the PAHs were mainly derived from petroleum sources, agricultural waste, and coal combustion. Nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) were mainly derived from liquid combustion sources, and oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) were derived mainly from petroleum source emissions and atmospheric deposition. The exposure risk model of PAHs revealed that 86% of the studied sites would pose carcinogenic risks after dermal contact. The contaminant causing a major carcinogenic risk was DahA, and none of the sites produced non-carcinogenic risks. The lifetime carcinogenic risk of NPAHs was 8.85 × 10^-10-1.44 × 10^-4, and some surface waters presented with potential carcinogenic risks.

Distinct seasonal variability of source-dependent health risks from PM2.5-bound PAHs and related derivatives in a megacity, southwest China: Implications for the significance of secondary formation

In contrast to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which have been regularly monitored, the source-dependent health risk of their derivatives in ambient environment has not been well understood, especially regarding seasonal variability. In this study, oxygenated and nitrated PAHs (OPAHs and NPAHs) in PM_2.5 samples from different seasons in urban Chongqing were analyzed and compared with PAHs from a human health perspective. Benzo[a]pyrene equivalent concentrations (BaP_eq) were annually averaged at 6.13 ± 8.97 ng/m³ (n = 118) in the present study, with highest levels in winter followed by spring, autumn, and summer. The BaP_eq values of OPAHs were higher than PAHs in spring and summer with seasonal averaged value up to 3.7 times of that for PAHs, manifesting significant underestimation of the health impact if only PAHs were considered. Incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) model results suggested that the potential cancer risks were accumulated mostly from inhalation exposure during infancy and adulthood. Furthermore, in comparison with PAHs, OPAHs, mainly 6H-Benzo[c,d]pyren-6-one, had significant contribution to cancer risks (annually averaged at 58.3 %). Source-dependent cancer risks based on positive matrix factorization model denoted secondary formed PAH derivatives as a critical contributor to cancer risk, particularly in spring and summer (attributed to about 61 % of ILCR). The enhanced secondary formation of PAH derivatives during spring and summer was partially justified by diagnostic ratios and further analysis revealed that higher temperature, higher O₃ level, and lower relative humidity besides stronger solar intensity during these two seasons as the most likely causes of this seasonal variation. Results in this study emphasizes that more knowledge on the formation and toxicity of OPAHs is imperative, especially in the context of complex PM_2.5-ozone pollution in China.

Occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of PAHs and OPAHs in urban agricultural soils from Guangzhou City, China

The occurrence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH) derivatives in the environment is of growing concern because they exhibit higher toxicity than their parent PAHs. This study evaluated the large-scale occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of 16 PAHs and 14 oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) in urban agricultural soils from seven districts of Guangzhou City, China. Linear correlation analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between PAH and OPAH occurrence and a series of parameters. The compositional analysis, principal component analysis, diagnostic ratios, and principal component analysis coupled with a multiple linear regression model were used to identify the sources of PAHs and OPAHs in the soils. The average concentrations of ΣPAHs and ΣOPAHs (59.6 ± 31.1-213 ± 115.5 μg/kg) during the flood season were significantly higher than those during the dry season (42.1 ± 13.3-157.2 ± 98.2 μg/kg), which were due to relatively strong wet deposition during the flood season and weak secondary reactions during the dry season. Linear correlation analysis showed that soil properties, industrial activities, and agricultural activities (r = 0.27-0.96, p < 0.05) were responsible for the spatial distribution of PAHs during the dry season. The PAH distribution was mainly affected by precipitation during the flood season. The concentrations of ΣOPAHs were only related to the soil properties during the dry season because their occurrence was sensitive to secondary reactions, climate and meteorological conditions, and their water solubility. Our results further showed that coal combustion and traffic emissions were the dominant origins of PAHs and OPAHs during both the seasons. Wet deposition and runoff-induced transport also contributed to PAH and OPAH occurrence during the flood season. The results of this study can improve our understanding of the environmental risks posed by PAHs and OPAHs.

Gas Particle Partitioning of PAHs Emissions from Typical Solid Fuel Combustions as Well as Their Health Risk Assessment in Rural Guanzhong Plain, China

Air pollutants from the incomplete combustion of rural solid fuels are seriously harmful to both air quality and human health. To quantify the health effects of different fuel-stove combinations, gas and particle partitioning of twenty-nine species of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) emitted from seven fuel-stove combinations were examined in this study, and the benzo (a) pyrene toxicity equivalent (BaPeq) and cancer risks were estimated accordingly. The results showed that the gas phase PAHs (accounting for 68-78% of the total PAHs) had higher emission factors (EFs) than particulate ones. For all combustion combinations, pPAHs accounted for the highest proportion (84.5% to 99.3%) in both the gas and particulate phases, followed by aPAHs (0.63-14.7%), while the proportions of nPAHs and oPAHs were much lower (2-4 orders of magnitude) than pPAHs. For BaPeq, particulate phase PAHs dominated the BaPeq rather than gas ones, which may be due to the greater abundance of 5-ring particle PAHs. Gas and particle pPAHs were both predominant in the BaPeq, with proportions of 95.2-98.6% for all combustion combinations. Cancer risk results showed a descending order of bituminous coal combustion (0.003-0.05), biomass burning (0.002-0.01), and clean briquette coal combustion (10^-5-0.001), indicating that local residents caused a severe health threat by solid fuel combustion (the threshold: 10^-4). The results also highlighted that clean briquette coal could reduce cancer risks by 1-2 orders of magnitude compared to bulk coal and biomass. For oPAH, BcdPQ (6H-benzo(c,d)pyrene-6-one) had the highest cancer risk, ranging from 4.83 × 10^-5 to 2.45 × 10^-4, which were even higher than the total of aPAHs and nPAHs. The dramatically high toxicity and cancer risk of PAHs from solid fuel combustion strengthened the necessity and urgency of clean heating innovation in Guanzhong Plain and in similar places.

Development of Quantitative Chemical Ionization Using Gas Chromatography/Mass Spectrometry and Gas Chromatography/Tandem Mass Spectrometry for Ambient Nitro- and Oxy-PAHs and Its Applications

The concentration of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the atmosphere has been continually monitored since their toxicity became known, whereas nitro-PAHs (NPAHs) and oxy-PAHs (OPAHs), which are derivatives of PAHs by primary emissions or secondary formations in the atmosphere, have gained attention more recently. In this study, a method for the quantification of 18 NPAH and OPAH congeners in the atmosphere based on combined applications of gas chromatography coupled with chemical ionization mass spectrometry is presented. A high sensitivity and selectivity for the quantification of individual NPAH and OPAH congeners without sample preparations from the extract of aerosol samples were achieved using negative chemical ionization (NCI/MS) or positive chemical ionization tandem mass spectrometry (PCI-MS/MS). This analytical method was validated and applied to the aerosol samples collected from three regions in Northeast Asia-namely, Noto, Seoul, and Ulaanbaatar-from 15 December 2020 to 17 January 2021. The ranges of the method detection limits (MDLs) of the NPAHs and OPAHs for the analytical method were from 0.272 to 3.494 pg/m³ and 0.977 to 13.345 pg/m³, respectively. Among the three regions, Ulaanbaatar had the highest total mean concentration of NPAHs and OPAHs at 313.803 ± 176.349 ng/m³. The contribution of individual NPAHs and OPAHs in the total concentration differed according to the regional emission characteristics. As a result of the aerosol samples when the developed method was applied, the concentrations of NPAHs and OPAHs were quantified in the ranges of 0.016~3.659 ng/m³ and 0.002~201.704 ng/m³, respectively. It was concluded that the method could be utilized for the quantification of NPAHs and OPAHs over a wide concentration range.

Pollution characteristics and health risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons during heating season in Beijing

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their nitrated derivatives (NPAHs) attract continuous attention due to their outstanding carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. In order to investigate the diurnal variations, sources, formation mechanism, and health risk assessment of them in heating season, particulate matter (PM) were collected in Beijing urban area from December 26, 2017 to January 17, 2018. PAHs and NPAHs in PM were quantitatively analyzed via gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) . Average daily concentrations of PAHs and NPAHs were (78 ± 54) ng/m³ and (783 ± 684) pg/m³, respectively. The concentrations of them were significantly higher at nighttime than at daytime, and NPAHs concentrations were 1-2 orders of magnitude lower than PAHs concentrations. In the heating season, the dominant species of PAHs include benzo[b]fluoranthene, fluoranthene, pyrene, and chrysene, while 9-nitroanthracene, 2+3-nitrofluoranthene, and 2-nitropyrene were dominant species for NPAHs. NPAHs were found to have a single peak during heating and to be primarily distributed in the 0.4-0.7 µm particle size. Primary emissions such as biomass burning, coal combustion, and traffic emissions were the major sources of PAHs. NPAHs were produced by the primary source of vehicle emissions and the secondary reaction triggered by OH radicals, as well as biomass burning during daytime. According to the health risk assessment, the total carcinogenic risk was higher in adults than in children. While upon oral ingestion, the carcinogenic risk in children was higher than that of adults, but the risk of adults was higher than children through skin contact and respiratory inhalation.

Nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons emissions from solid fuel combustion in rural China: Database of 12 real-world scenarios for residential cooking and heating activities

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) derivatives such as oxygenated PAHs (oPAHs) and nitrated PAHs (nPAHs), are receiving raising concerns due to their high toxic potential. Incomplete solid fuel combustion can release large quantities of PAHs derivatives, especially in low-efficiency domestic stoves. In this study, field measurements were conducted in rural Chinese homes to determine emissions of nPAHs and oPAHs from solid fuel combustion. A total of 12 fuel-stove combinations including cooking and space heating activities were investigated. Emission factors (EFs) of total nPAHs and oPAHs were in the range of 1.0-682.1 μg/kg and 0.01-131.7 mg/kg, respectively, with arithmetic means and stand deviations of 53.5 ± 72.5 μg/kg and 13.9 ± 24.4 mg/kg, respectively. The EFs of nPAHs and oPAHs for coal combustion (including honeycomb briquette, coal chunk, and peat tested in this study) were 30.2 ± 28.1 μg/kg and 1.5 ± 2.9 mg/kg, respectively, much lower than that for biomass burning (p < 0.05). The combustion phase could significantly affect the PAHs derivative emissions with higher emissions at initial phase than that at stable phase. Fuel type was found to affect the EFs, composition profiles, and ratios of PAHs derivatives to parent PAHs. This study tries to have an insight of PAHs derivative emissions from various solid fuel combustion, which would be useful in understanding the atmospheric PAHs derivative pollutions in China.

Polluting characteristics, sources, cancer risk, and cellular toxicity of PAHs bound in atmospheric particulates sampled from an economic transformation demonstration area of Dongguan in the Pearl River Delta, China

The Songshan Lake Science and Technology Industrial Park is a national economic transition demonstration area, which centers at a traditional industrial region, in Dongguan, China. We were interested in the involved atmospheric particulates-bound PAHs regarding their sources, cancer risk, and related cellular toxicity for those in other areas under comparable conditions. In this study, the daily concentrations of TSP, PM₁₀, and PM_2.5 were averaged 127.95, 95.91, and 67.62 μg/m³, and the bound PAHs were averaged 1.31, 1.22, and 0.77 ng/m³ in summer and 12.72, 20.51 and 40.27 ng/m³ in winter, respectively. The dominant PAHs were those with 5-6 rings, and 4-6 rings in summer and winter, respectively. The incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) (90th percentile probability) of total PAHs was above 1.00E-06 in each age group, particularly high in adolescents. Sensitivity analysis indicated that slope factor and body weight had greater impact than exposure duration and inhalation rate on the ILCR. Moreover, treatment of human bronchial epithelial BEAS-2B cells with mixed five indicative PAHs increased the formation of ROS, DNA damage (elevation in γ-H2AX), and protein levels of CAR, PXR, CYP1A1, 1A2, 1B1, while reduced the AhR protein, with the winter mixture more potent than summer. For the sources of PAHs, the stable carbon isotope ratio analysis and diagnostic ratios consistently pointed to petroleum and fossil fuel combustion as major sources. In conclusion, our findings suggest that particulates-bound PAHs deserve serious concerns for a cancer risk in such environment, and the development of new power sources for reducing fossil fuel combustion is highly encouraged.

Health Risk Assessment of Inhalation Exposure to Airborne Particle-Bound Nitrated Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Urban and Suburban Areas of South China

Airborne particulates (PM_2.5 and TSP) were collected from outdoor and indoor areas at urban (Haizhu District) and suburban (Huadu District) sites from 2019 to 2020 in Guangzhou. Three nitro-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (nitro-PAHs) in the airborne particulates were identified by a gas chromatograph equipped with a triple-quadrupole mass spectrometer. In the Haizhu District and Huadu District, the nitro-PAH concentrations in PM_2.5 and TSP did not show a significant decrease from winter to summer. From 2019 to 2020, the difference in the average concentration of nitro-PAHs in PM_2.5 and TSP in Guangzhou was relatively low and had no statistical significance. The diagnostic ratios of 2-nitrofluorene (2-NF)/1-nitropyrene (1-NP) in TSP are less than five, while for 2-NF/1-NP in outdoor PM_2.5 in the summer of 2019 and 2020 are more than five, which indicates that nitro-PAHs in the atmospheric PM_2.5 in Guangzhou during summer mainly originated from the secondary formation of atmospheric photochemical reactions between parent PAHs and oxidants (·OH, NO₃, and O₃). 9-Nitroanthracene (9-NT) made the most significant contribution to the total nitro-PAH concentration. The incremental lifetime cancer risks (ILCRs) of nitro-PAHs in PM_2.5 and TSP by inhalation exposure indicated low potential health risks in the urban-suburban of Guangzhou.

Size distribution, meteorological influence and uncertainty for source-specific risks: PM2.5 and PM10-bound PAHs and heavy metals in a Chinese megacity during 2011-2021

This study aims at exploring size distribution, meteorological influence and uncertainty for source-specific risks of atmospheric particulate matter (PM), which can improve risk-mitigation strategies for health protection. Heavy metals (HMs) and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ were detected in a Chinese megacity during 2011-2021. A new method named as PMFBMR, which combines the Positive Matrix Factorization, Bootstrapping, Mote Carlo and Risk assessment model, was developed to estimate uncertainty of source-specific risks. It was found that PAH risks concentrated in fine PM, while HMs showed high risks in both fine and coarse PMs. For PM_2.5, HQ (non-cancer risk hazard quotient) of gasoline combustion (GC), diesel and heavy oil combustion (DC), coal combustion (CC), industrial source (IS), resuspended dust (RD) and secondary and transport PM (ST) were 0.6, 1.4, 0.9, 1.6, 0.3, and 0.3. ILCR (lifetime cancer risk) of sources were IS (9.2E-05) > DC (2.6E-05) = CC (2.6E-05) > RD (2.2E-05) > GC (1.7E-05) > ST (6.4E-06). PM_2.5 from GC, DC, CC and IS caused higher risks than coarse PM, while coarse PM from RD caused higher risks. Source-specific risks were influenced not only by emissions, but also by meteorological condition and dominant toxic components. Risks of GC and DC were usually high during stable weather. Some high risks of CC, IS and RD occurred at strong WS due to transport or wind-blown resuspension. GC and DC risks (influenced by both PAHs and HMs) showed strong relationship with T, while IS and RD risks (dominated by HMs) showed weak link with meteorological conditions. For uncertainty of source-specific risks, HQ and ILCR were sensitive for different variables, because they were dominated by components with different uncertainties. When using source-specific risks for risk-mitigation strategies, the focused toxic components, used toxic values, PM sizes and uncertainty are necessary to be considered.

Seasonality, atmospheric transport and inhalation risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in PM2.5 and PM10 from industrial belts of Odisha, India

This study is the first attempt to assess the presence of 16 priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) enlisted by the US Environmental Protection Agency in PM_2.5 and PM₁₀ from industrial areas of Odisha State, India. During 2017-2018, bimonthly sampling of PM₁₀ and PM_2.5 was carried out for 24 h in the industrial and mining areas of Jharsuguda and Angul in Odisha during the pre-monsoon, monsoon, and post monsoon seasons. Highest mean concentration of ∑₁₆PAHs in PM_2.5 was observed during the post monsoon (170 ng/m³) period followed by pre-monsoon (48 ng/m³) and monsoon (16 ng/m ³) periods, respectively. A similar trend of ∑₁₆PAHs was also observed in PM₁₀ with higher levels observed during post monsoon (286 ng/m³) followed by pre-monsoon (81 ng/m³) and monsoon (27 ng/m³) seasons. Diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis suggested diesel, gasoline and coal combustion as the major contributors of atmospheric PAH pollution in Odisha. Back trajectory analysis revealed that PAH concentration was affected majorly by air masses originating from the northwest direction traversing through central India. Toxic equivalents ranged between 0.24 and 94.13 ng TEQ/m³. In our study, the incremental lifetime cancer risk ranged between 10^-5 and 10^-3, representing potential cancer risk.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in gas, PM2.5, and frost samples in a severely polluted rural site of the North China Plain: Distribution, source, and risk assessment

The process of frost formation has been studied as an important deposition pathway for removing atmospheric pollutants. However, the removal of organic species during frost formation remains unknown. Gas, PM_2.5 and frost samples were collected in Wangdu, a severely polluted rural site in the North China Plain, during the winter of 2018. The concentrations, distributions, sources, and ecological and health risks of the 16 PAHs in the samples were determined. The 24 h-averaged concentrations of PAHs in the air (gas + PM_2.5) reached 719 ng m^-3, indicating that the local atmosphere was heavily contaminated by PAHs in winter. The average concentrations of PAHs in the frost insoluble reached 27.5 μg g^-1, indicating the strong ambient PAHs deposition during the frost process. The distribution patterns of individual PAH species indicated that the PAHs in the gas influenced the frost samples, and the sources of PAHs in frost samples were highly similar to those in PM_2.5 samples. The calculated lifetime lung cancer risk (LLCR) via inhalation of ambient PAHs was classified as high risks. The average total Benzo(a)pyrene toxic equivalent quotient (TEQ) of PAHs in the frost samples was estimated as 2.50 μg TEQ g^-1, posing a high threat to the ecological environment and health. After the melting of frost, the PAHs are released into the soil. Although the concentrations are diluted, the PAH concentrations could adversely affect the growing vegetation or agricultural activities. The extremely high PAH concentrations and their ecological and health risks require special attention and strict regulation.

Atmospheric occurrences of nitrated and hydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons from typical e-waste dismantling sites

Primitive electronic waste (e-waste) dismantling activities have been shown to be an important emissions source for a variety of toxic organic compounds, including carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Previous studies have found that some nitrated PAHs (NPAHs) are more toxic than their parent PAHs, however, little attention has been paid to the formation of PAH derivatives during e-waste processing and there is a lack of comprehensive data from field observations. In this study, the spatial distribution, temporal trends and atmospheric fate of NPAHs and hydroxylated PAHs (OH-PAHs) were investigated at typical e-waste dismantling sites, with monitoring data collected over three consecutive years. Compared to background levels, higher levels of NPAHs and OH-PAHs were found in air samples from an e-waste dismantling industrial park, with their seasonal and annual changes shown to be affected by e-waste dismantling activities. Atmospheric PM_2.5 particles were found to have high relative abundances of NPAHs (76.9%-95.1%) and OH-PAHs (73.3%-91.6%), with particle-bound concentrations ranging from 20.1 to 88.8 and 37.1 to 107 pg m^-3, respectively. The most abundant NPAH isomers were found to be 9-Nitroanthracene and 2-Nitrofluoranthene, while OH-PAH isomers containing 2-4 rings were predominant. Source identification was performed based on the specific diagnostic ratios of NPAH isomers, confirming that NPAH and OH-PAH emissions have multiple sources, including emissions related to the e-waste dismantling process, atmospheric photochemical reactions and traffic emissions. Further research on the fate of such derivatives and their potential use as markers for source identification, is urgently required.

Molecular signatures of organic particulates as tracers of emission sources

Chemical signature of airborne particulates and deposition dusts is subject of study since decades. Usually, three complementary composition markers are investigated, namely, (i) specific organic compounds; (ii) concentration ratios between congeners, and (iii) percent distributions of homologs. Due to its intrinsic limits (e.g., variability depending on decomposition and gas/particle equilibrium), the identification of pollution sources based on molecular signatures results overall restricted to qualitative purposes. Nevertheless, chemical fingerprints allow drawing preliminary information, suitable for successfully approaching multivariate analysis and valuing the relative importance of sources. Here, the state-of-the-art is presented about the molecular fingerprints of non-polar aliphatic, polyaromatic (PAHs, nitro-PAHs), and polar (fatty acids, organic halides, polysaccharides) compounds in emissions. Special concern was addressed to alkenes and alkanes with carbon numbers ranging from 12 to 23 and ≥ 24, which displayed distinct relative abundances in petrol-derived spills and exhausts, emissions from microorganisms, high vegetation, and sediments. Long-chain alkanes associated with tobacco smoke were characterized by a peculiar iso/anteiso/normal homolog fingerprint and by n-hentriacontane percentages higher than elsewhere. Several concentration ratios of PAHs were identified as diagnostic of the type of emission, and the sources of uncertainty were elucidated. Despite extensive investigations conducted so far, the origin of uncommon molecular fingerprints, e.g., alkane/alkene relationships in deposition dusts and airborne particles, remains quite unclear. Polar organics resulted scarcely investigated for pollution apportioning purposes, though they looked as indicative of the nature of sources. Finally, the role of humans and living organisms as actual emitters of chemicals seems to need concern in the future.

Characteristics and health risks of parent, alkylated, and oxygenated PAHs and their contributions to reactive oxygen species from PM2.5 vehicular emissions in the longest tunnel in downtown Xi'an, China

A vehicular emission study was conducted in the longest inner-city tunnel in Xi'an, northwestern China in four time periods (I: 07:30-10:30, II: 11:00-14:00, III: 16:30-19:30, and IV: 20:00-23:00 LST). A sum of 40 PAHs, including parent (p-PAHs), alkylated (a-PAHs), and oxygenated (o-PAHs) in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) were quantified. The relationships between the PAHs and the formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) were also studied. The average total quantified PAHs concentration was 236.3 ± 48.3 ng m^-3. The p-PAHs were found to be the most dominated group, accounting for an average of 88.1% of the total quantified PAHs, followed by a-PAHs (6.1%) and o-PAHs (5.8%). On the base of the number of aromatic rings, the groups of ≤5 rings (92.5 ± 1.2%) had higher fractions than the high ones (≥6 rings, 7.5 ± 1.2%) for pPAHs. Diurnal variations of PAHs subgroups exhibited the highest levels in Period III, consistent with the largest traffic counts in evening rush hours. However, less reduction of few PAHs in the night period demonstrates that the emissions of compressed natural gas (CNG) and methanol-fueled vehicles cannot be ignored while their contribution increased. High ROS activity levels were observed in the traffic-dominated samples, implying the potential oxidative damages to humans. Additionally, diurnal variation of the ROS activity was consistent with the total quantified PAHs and toxic equivalency of benzo[a]pyrene. Good correlations (R > 0.6, p < 0.05) were seen between individual groups of PAHs (especially for 3-5 rings p-PAHs, 4 rings a-PAHs, and 2-3 rings o-PAHs) and ROS activity, supporting that the vehicular emitted PAHs possibly initiate oxidative stress. The multiple linear regression analysis further illustrated that chrysene contributed the highest (25.0%) to ROS activity. In addition to highlighting the potential hazards to the PAHs from the vehicular emission, their roles to mitigate the health effects by formations of ROS were firstly reported in northwestern China.

Atmospheric chemistry and cancer risk assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Nitro-PAHs over a semi-arid site in the Indo-Gangetic plain

Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and Nitro-PAHs were collected over a year at a traffic dominated site in Agra, to determine the dominant partitioning mechanism. During the entire sampling period, total PAHs and Nitro-PAHs were 3465 ± 3802 and 26.1 ± 25.9 ng m^-3 respectively. The gas-particle partitioning behavior of PAHs was studied by applying the Pankow model, Absorption model, and Dual model. Amongst all the partitioning models, the Dual model fits well and indicates that the partitioning of PAHs at the traffic site in Agra depends on both the physical adsorption of PAHs on the Total Suspended Particulate (TSP) surface and absorption of PAHs into the organic layer present on the TSP surface. Pankow model indicates that PAHs are emitted from the source close to the sampling point and due to this PAHs do not get enough time to get partitioned in between both the phases. Incremental lifetime Cancer Risk (ILCR) shows that adults and children are more prone to cancer risk in comparison to infants for both PAHs and Nitro-PAHs. Cancer risk by inhalation was minimum in comparison to both ingestion and dermal exposure. Nitro-PAHs in the particulate phase were high enough to exceed the minimum permissible limit (10^-6) of causing cancer by ingestion and dermal exposure.

PAHs and nitro-PAHs in urban Beijing from 2017 to 2018: Characteristics, sources, transformation mechanism and risk assessment

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their nitrated derivatives (NPAHs) attract continuous attention due to their distinct carcinogenicity and mutagenicity. To investigate the characteristics, sources, formation mechanism and health risk assessment of PAHs and NPAHs, PM_2.5 were collected at an urban site in Beijing from 2017 to 2018. The highest PAHs and NPAHs concentrations were 77.92 ± 54.62 ng/m³ and 963.71 ± 695.06 pg/m³ in the winter campaign, which were several times larger than those in other seasonal campaigns. Distinct diurnal variations of nocturnal levels higher than daytime levels were shown for PAHs and NPAHs. Source analysis indicated that besides vehicle exhaust, biomass burning and coal combustion were important sources of PAHs and NPAHs in the fall and winter campaigns. Secondary formation in atmosphere was another source of NPAHs especially in the spring and summer campaigns. NO₂ and RH could positively influence the heterogeneous formation of NPAHs when RH was less than 60%. Quantum calculation results confirmed the formation pathway of 2N-FLA from the OH/NO₃-initiated oxidation of FLA. The results of health risk assessment showed the potential health risks for the residents, especially in the winter campaign. These results indicated that PAHs and NPAHs still deserve attention following with the decrease concentrations of particulate matter.

The effect of low molecular weight-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons responsive hsa_circ_0039929/hsa-miR-15b-3p_R-1/FGF2 circuit on inflammatory response of A549 cells via the PI3K/AKT pathway and epithelial-mesenchymal transition process

Inflammation is widely recognized as an essential inducer of epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT). Meanwhile, competitive endogenous RNA (ceRNA) has been involved in a variety of disease processes. Therefore, the aim of the current study is to explore the regulation of ceRNA in the PI3K/AKT pathway and EMT mechanism in inflammatory response caused by low molecular weight-polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (LMW-PAHs). The A549 cells were treated with an equal mixture of phenanthrene (Phe) and fluorene (Flu), and total RNA was extracted for transcriptome sequencing. The target regulation of ceRNA hsa_circ_0039929/hsa-miR-15b-3p_R-1/FGF2 was further determined for mechanism study. The mixture of Phe and Flu significantly upregulated the expressions of hsa_circ_0039929 and FGF2, down-regulated hsa-miR-15b-3p_R-1, activated the PI3K/AKT pathway and promoted EMT. Mechanically, the overexpression of hsa-miR-15b-3p_R-1 inhibited the expressions of hsa_circ_0039929 and FGF2, reversed the activation of PI3K/AKT signaling pathway by LMW-PAHs, and blocked the occurrence of EMT progression. Furthermore, knockdown of hsa_circ_0039929 could promote the levels of hsa-miR-15b-3p_R-1, while inhibit the expression of FGF2. The effects of hsa_circ_0039929 knockdowns on PI3K/AKT pathways and EMT progress resembled the hsa-miR-15b-3p_R-1 overexpression. All above suggested that ceRNA hsa_circ_0039929/hsa-miR-15b-3p_R-1/FGF2 played an important role in the inflammation and EMT caused by LMW-PAHs.

Atmospheric PAHs in rural, urban, industrial and beach locations in Buenos Aires Province, Argentina: sources and health risk assessment

The first atmospheric PAHs levels and associated inhalation cancer risk were assessed over southwest Buenos Aires region by deploying PUF disk PAS samplers. Eight sampling location included coastal zones, touristic beaches, and rural inland areas were considered. PUF disks were fortified with surrogate standards and extracted by automated Soxhlet prior to GC-MS analysis. Σ₁₆ PAHs ranged from 1.13 to 44.5 ng m^-3 (10.3 ± 9.8), while urban locations showed up to 10 times higher PAH levels than rural or beach locations. Direct sources of PAHs, such as intensive vehicle traffic, heating, and general combustion activities, were identified. PAHs with four to six rings (46.62%) were predominantly Flt, Pyr, BbF, and BkF, and carcinogenic risk was expressed by BaP (0.10 ± 0.07 ng m^-3) and BaPTEQs (0.26 ± 0.22 ng m^-3). Inhalation ECR (2.23E-5, WHO) presented the lowest risk at beach locations. Molecular ratios and PCA showed a strong dominance in pyrolytic sources, such as biomass and coal combustion, with a particular signature in fires at inland locations. Overall, this study demonstrated that PUF disk passive air sampling provided a sound and simple approach for tracking air PAHs, their sources and public health risks, bringing a cost-effective tool for pollution control measures, even at small and remote towns. This is particularly relevant in extensive countries with medium or low income, such as Argentina.

A comprehensive evaluation of PM2.5-bound PAHs and their derivative in winter from six megacities in China: Insight the source-dependent health risk and secondary reactions

Atmospheric PAHs (polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons) and their derivatives are a global concern that influences environments and threatens human health. Concentrations of 52 PAHs and the main derivatives in six Chinese megacities were measured in the winter of 2019. The concentrations of ∑PAHs (sum of 52 PAHs) ranged from 19.42 ± 7.68 to 65.40 ± 29.84 ng m^-3, with significantly higher levels in northern cities (Harbin [HB], Beijing [BJ], and Xi'an [XA]) than southern ones (Wuhan [WH], Chengdu [CD] and Guangzhou [GZ]). Source apportionment of ∑PAHs was conducted by the PMF model and results showed coal combustion and traffic emissions were the two dominant sources, which dominated ∑PAHs in northern and southern cities, respectively. Biomass burning was also characterized as a crucial source of ∑PAHs and showed extremely high contributions in XA (42.5%). Assisted by the individual PAH source apportionment results, the source-depend TEQ (total BaP equivalent) and incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) were firstly reported in these cities. The results highlighted the contributions of coal combustion and biomass burning to both TEQ and ILCR, which were underestimated by ∑PAHs source apportionment. Secondary organic aerosol-derived PAHs were demonstrated to increase the TEQ compared with the fresh PAHs and three parameters, namely temperature, relative humidity, and O₃ concentrations were characterized by multiple linear regression as the principal factors influencing secondary reactions of PAHs in winter. This study provides accurate human health-orientated results and potential control measures to mitigate the toxicity of secondary formed PAHs, and significantly decrease the uncertainty level of traditional methods. The results also revealed great progress in air pollution control by the Chinese government in the past 20 years, but still a long way to go to formulate strict emission control strategies from both environmental and human health-protective perspectives.

Porous aromatic framework coated stir bar sorptive extraction coupled with gas chromatography for the analysis of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in atmospheric particles and environmental water samples

In this work, porous aromatic frameworks (PAFs) with different pore size were evaluated for simultaneous adsorption of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) with large difference in polarity and molecular size. Two other porous organic polymers containing electron pushing/withdrawing group were investigated along for a comparison, and PAF-120 with the pore size of appr. 2.1 nm exhibited the highest extraction efficiency. Based on water contact angle and molecular dynamics simulation, the adsorption of 16 PAHs on PAF-120 was attributed to hydrophobic interaction, π-π interaction and molecular sieving effect. PAF-120/PDMS coated stir bar was then prepared by physical adhesion, and a method of stir bar sorptive extraction-gas chromatography-flame ionization detector was established for trace PAHs analysis in environmental samples. Under the optimal experimental conditions, the limits of detection (S/N = 3) for 16 PAHs were found to be in the range of 42-375 ng/L, with the relative standard deviations of 4.1-14.6% (n = 7). The enrichment factors varied from 31 (Indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene) to 80-fold (anthracene), with the maximal enrichment factor of 100-fold. The proposed method was applied to the analysis of PAHs in local environmental water and atmospheric particle samples. None of the 16 PAHs were detected in the collected water samples. While for the collected atmospheric particles, 12 PAHs were detected in fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) within the range of 0.6-2.8 ng/m³. For inhalable particulate matter (PM₁₀) and total suspended particulate matter (TSP), 16 PAHs were all detected in the range of 0.6-3.8 ng/m³ and 0.6-5.9 ng/m³, respectively. Quantitative recoveries were obtained in recovery test, demonstrating the accuracy and application potential of the proposed method.

Investigation of PAHs, nitrated PAHs and oxygenated PAHs in PM10 urban aerosols. A comprehensive data analysis

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) in particulate matter contribute considerably to the health risk of air pollution. As such, we have optimized a method to determine the levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, especially nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, in samples of PM₁₀ particulate matter using microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) and gas chromatography coupled to a triple quadrupole mass spectrometer (GC-MS/MS). The proposed method was applied to the analysis of real samples collected in the urban area of Ciudad Real (Spain) during one year. The median total concentrations of eighteen PAHs (∑PAHs) and seven OPAHs (∑OPAHs) were 0.54 and 0.23 ng m^-3, respectively, with the corresponding value for NPAH (∑NPAHs) being 0.03 ng m^-3 (only detected in 40% of samples). A clear seasonal trend was observed, with higher levels in the cold season and lower in the warm season for ∑PAHs. The same effect was observed for ∑OPAHs, which exhibited a median concentration of 0.72 ng m^-3 in the cold season and 0.10 ng m^-3 in the warm season, and for ∑NPAH, which exhibited a median of 0.04 ng m^-3 in the cold season but were not detected in the warm season. Molecular diagnostic ratios and PCA (principal component analysis) showed a predominantly traffic origin for PACs. The sources of PAHs also depend on meteorological conditions and/or atmospheric reactions, as confirmed by means of statistical analysis. The ∑OPAH/∑PAH and ∑NPAH/∑PAH ratios were higher in the cold season than the warm season, thus suggesting that PAH derivatives originated from primary combustion emission sources together with their parent PAHs. The concentration range found for benzo(a)pyrene was 0.006-0.542 ng m^-3, which is below the threshold value of 1 ng m^-3 established in European legislation as the annual average value. The lifetime lung risk from inhalation of PM₁₀-bound PACs was estimated to be six cancer cases per million people using the World Health Organization method.

Atmospheric levels, distribution, sources, correlation with meteorological parameters and other pollutants and health risk of PAHs bound in PM2.5 and PM10 in Burgas, Bulgaria - a case study

The quality of atmospheric air of Burgas city, Bulgaria was analyzed in relation to PAHs in two particulate matter fractions - 2.5 μm and 10 μm. It was found that PAHs registered in PM₁₀ represent entirely the ones registered in PM_2.5 - an indication that the particulate PAHs in ambient air of Burgas for the sampling period are associated with the fine PM fraction. The PAH compounds with highest concentrations are mainly associated with coal combustion, diesel and gasoline vehicle and biomass burning, which is further confirmed by the calculated diagnostic ratios. The combustion-derived PAHs represent on average 86.6 ± 2.8% of total PAHs concentration. The linear regression analysis showed strong and statistically meaningful correlations between PM fractions and PAHs indicating the influence of similar local events and emission sources of pollution. PM_2.5 or PM₁₀ relationships with PAHs were significant but lower correlation coefficients were observed for low-molecular weight (LMW) PAHs in comparison to middle-molecular weight (MMW) and higher-molecular weight (HMW) PAHs, due to their lower presence in particulates and higher partition in gaseous atmospheric phase. Further significant correlations were found with wind speed, solar radiation and atmospheric pressure as well as NO₂ and O₃ ambient concentration. The calculated excess cancer risks are twice as much as acceptable limit.

Effect of γ-Fe2O3 nanoparticles on the composition of montmorillonite and its sorption capacity for pyrene

Fe content and distribution on montmorillonite would probably enhance its sorption capacity for hydrophobic organic pollutants. Thus, Fe modified montmorillonites with different ratios of FeSO₄·7H₂O and Ca-montmorillonite were prepared. The results indicated that γ-Fe₂O₃ nanoparticles were not only generated at the montmorillonite surfaces, but that the γ-Fe₂O₃ also extended the edges of montmorillonite surfaces. The sorption capacities for pyrene were enhanced and even reached 834.79 μg g^-1 with increase in ferrous iron content, but were then suppressed due to aggregation of γ-Fe₂O₃ on montmorillonite surfaces. Furthermore, pyrene was directly observed on γ-Fe₂O₃-montmorillonite surfaces with a lattice spacing parameter of approximately 0.27 nm, indicating that a new phase that mainly contained pyrene was generated during the sorption process. Additionally, after regenerating the γ-Fe₂O₃-montmorillonite composites, they could be reused for at least 5 cycles. It is therefore proposed that the prepared γ-Fe₂O₃-montmorillonite could be exploited as a potential green composite for remediation of hydrophobic organic pollutants in soil and sediment.

Occurrences, Sources, and Human Health Risk Assessments of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Marine Organisms From Temperate Coastal Area

The pollution characteristics of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine organism species (6 species of fishes and 2 species of crustaceans) from the coastal area of the East China Sea were determined. The concentrations of 16 PAHs in the studied organisms ranged from 29.73 to 87.02 ng/g dw and 2- and 3-ring PAHs were the most abundant compounds in the aquatic organisms. The habitat, diet and predator-prey relationship have posed potential effects on the PAH accumulation in marine organisms. The source identification of PAHs was performed by using the molecular diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis (PCA). The results showed that the main sources of PAHs in the marine organisms were coal combustion, followed by mixture of gasoline combustion, oil combustion, crude oil spill and vehicle emissions. The incremental lifetime cancer risk of human via ingestion process of marine organisms in this sea area was also estimated and the assessment showed that it posed an acceptable but non-negligible risk to human health.

Source identification and risk assessment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in air and dust samples of Lahore City

During two consecutive summer and winter seasons in Lahore, the health risk of air and dust-borne polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) was evaluated. Gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GS/MS) was used to determine air and dust samples from various functional areas across the city. The mean ∑₁₆PAHs were higher in air 1035.8 ± 310.7 (pg m^-3) and dust 963.4 ± 289.0 (ng g^-1 d.w.) during winter seasons as compared to summer seasons in air 1010.9 ± 303.3 (pg m^-3) and dust matrices 945.2 ± 283.6 (ng g^-1 d.w.), respectively. PAHs ring profile recognized 3 and 4 rings PAHs as most dominant in air and dust samples. Estimated results of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) highlighted high carcinogenic risk among the residents of Lahore via ingestion and dermal contact on exposure to atmospheric PAHs. The total ILCR values in air among children (summer: 9.61E - 02, winter: 2.09E - 02) and adults (summer: 1.45E - 01, winter: 3.14E - 02) and in dust, children (summer: 9.16E - 03, winter: 8.80E - 03) and adults (summer: 1.38E - 02, winter: 1.33E - 02) during the study period. The isomeric ratios in the study area revealed mixed PAH sources, including vehicular emission, petroleum, diesel and biomass combustion. As a result, it is advised that atmospheric PAHs should be monitored throughout the year and the ecologically friendly fuels be used to prevent PAHs pollution and health concerns in the city. The findings of this study are beneficial to the local regulating bodies in terms of controlling the exposure and promoting steps to reduce PAHs pollution and manage health in Lahore.

FT-ICR mass spectrometry for molecular characterization of water-insoluble organic compounds in winter atmospheric fine particulate matters

Water-insoluble organic compounds (WIOCs) are an important fraction of atmospheric fine particulate matters (PM_2.5), which could affect the climate system and threaten human health potentially. In this study, molecular characterization of WIOCs in PM_2.5 were investigated by 15 T Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR MS) with atmospheric pressure photoionization (APPI) source in positive ion mode. A total of 2573 and 1875 molecular formulas were identified in WIOCs extracted by dichloromethane, which were collected in hazy and normal days, respectively. The identified molecular formulas were further classified into four major subgroups, including CH, CHN, CHO and CHNO compounds. CHO compounds predominated in WIOCs, accounting for more than 60% in both samples. CHNO compounds (26.6%) and CH compounds (16.1%) were the second highest subgroups in WIOCs from the hazy days and normal days, respectively. The relative abundance and number of nitro-substituted aromatic compounds were significantly higher in hazy days than in normal days. The molecular composition of WIOCs was more complex in hazy days while more aromatic compounds were identified in normal days.

Poor regulation implications in a low and middle income country based on PAH source apportionment and cancer risk assessment

Ambient particle-bound polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) were collected for one year at an urban background site, and spatially and temporally compared to yearly averages in three coastal cities in Lebanon. The samples were quantified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and source apportioned with an optimized robust method using positive matrix factorization (PMF). Three major sources were found to contribute to PAH emissions at the urban background site, namely, traffic (48%), diesel generators (23%), and incineration (29%). The cancer risk was found higher than what was measured at the same site in previous years with an increase of 35%. Improper regulations of the sources (incineration, power plant, diesel generators and traffic) identified in the different sites resulted in PAH intraurban variability. It is essential to study the chemical components of particulate matter (PM) in order to assess toxicity. In particular, particle-bound PAHs and their oxidation products are known for their carcinogenicity as well as their persistence in the atmosphere, which facilitate their transport to new locations. In the absence of law enforcement, unregulated sources and their total contribution to ambient PAHs present a major health risk. This calls for the attention of development funding agencies and their need to implement sustainable "carbon-free" funding strategies in support of urban development of low and middle-income countries (LMICs).

Polycyclic Aromatic Carbon: A Key Fraction Determining the Light Absorption Properties of Methanol-Soluble Brown Carbon of Open Biomass Burning Aerosols

The composition and radiative forcing of light-absorbing brown carbon (BrC) aerosol remain poorly understood. Polycyclic aromatics (PAs) are BrC chromophores with fused benzene rings. Understanding the occurrence and significance of PAs in BrC is challenging due to a lack of standards for many PAs. In this study, we quantified polycyclic aromatic carbon (PAC), defined as the carbon of fused benzene rings, based on molecular markers (benzene polycarboxylic acids, BPCAs). Open biomass burning aerosols (OBBAs) of 22 rainforest plants were successively extracted with water and methanol for the analysis of water- and methanol-soluble PAC (WPAC and MPAC, respectively). PAC is an important fraction of water- and methanol-soluble organic carbon (WSOC and MSOC, respectively). WPAC/WSOC ranged from 0.03 to 0.18, and MPAC/MSOC was even higher (range: 0.16-0.80). The priority polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contributed less than 1% of MPAC. The mass absorption efficiency (MAE) of MSOC showed a strong linear correlation with MPAC/MSOC (r = 0.60-0.95, p < 0.01). The absorption Ångström exponent (AAE) of methanol-soluble BrC showed a strong linear correlation with the degree of aromatic condensation of MPAC, which was described by the average number of carboxylic groups of BPCA (r = -0.79, p < 0.01). This result suggested that PAC was a key fraction determining the light absorption properties (i.e., light absorptivity and wavelength dependence) of methanol-soluble BrC in OBBAs.

NPAHs and OPAHs in the atmosphere of two central European cities: Seasonality, urban-to-background gradients, cancer risks and gas-to-particle partitioning

Derivatives of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) such as nitrated- and oxygenated-PAHs (NPAHs and OPAHs) could be even more toxic and harmful for the environment and humans than PAHs. We assessed the spatial and seasonal variations of NPAHs and OPAHs atmospheric levels, their cancer risks and their gas-to-particle partitioning. To this end, about 250 samples of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and 50 gaseous samples were collected in 2017 in central Europe in the cities of Brno and Ljubljana (two traffic and two urban background sites) as well as one rural site. The average particulate concentrations were ranging from below limit of quantification to 593 pg m-3 for Σ9NPAHs and from 1.64 to 4330 pg m-3 for Σ11OPAHs, with significantly higher concentrations in winter compared to summer. In winter, the particulate levels of NPAHs and OPAHs were higher at the traffic site compared to the urban background site in Brno while the opposite was found in Ljubljana. NPAHs and OPAHs particulate levels were influenced by the meteorological parameters and co-varied with several air pollutants. The significance of secondary formation on the occurrence of some NPAHs and OPAHs is indicated. In winter, 27-47% of samples collected at all sites were above the acceptable lifetime carcinogenic risk. The gas-particle partitioning of NPAHs and OPAHs was influenced by their physico-chemical properties, the season and the site-specific aerosol composition. Three NPAHs and five OPAHs had higher particulate mass fractions at the traffic site, suggesting they could be primarily emitted as particles from vehicle traffic and subsequently partitioning to the gas phase along air transport. This study underlines the importance of inclusion of the gas phase in addition to the particulate phase when assessing the atmospheric fate of polycyclic aromatic compounds and also when assessing the related health risk.

The chemical composition and toxicological effects of fine particulate matter (PM2.5) emitted from different cooking styles

The mass, chemical composition and toxicological properties of fine particulates (PM_2.5) emitted from cooking activities in three Hong Kong based restaurants and two simulated cooking experiments were characterized. Extracts from the PM_2.5 samples elicited significant biological activities [cell viability, generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS), DNA damage and inflammation effect (TNF-α)] in a dose-dependent manner. The composition of PAHs, oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs) and azaarenes (AZAs) mixtures differed between samples. The concentration ranges of the Σ30PAHs, Σ17OPAHs and Σ4AZAs and Σ7Carbonyls in the samples were 9627-23,452 pg m^-3, 503-3700 pg m^-3, 33-263 pg m^-3 and 158 - 5328 ng m^-3, respectively. Cell viability caused by extracts from the samples was positively correlated to the concentration of benzo[a]anthracene, indeno[1,2,3-cd]pyrene and 1,4-naphthoquinone in the PM_2.5 extracts. Cellular ROS production (upon exposure to extracts) was positively correlated with the concentrations of PM_2.5, decaldehyde, acridine, Σ17OPAHs and 7 individual OPAHs. TNF-α showed significant positive correlations with the concentrations of most chemical species (elemental carbon, 16 individual PAHs including benzo[a]pyrene, Σ30PAHs, SO₄^2-, Ca²⁺, Ca, Na, K, Ti, Cr, Mn, Fe, Cu and Zn). The concentrations of Al, Ti, Mn, Σ30PAHs and 8 individual PAHs including benzo[a]pyrene in the samples were positively correlated with DNA damage caused by extracts from the samples. This study demonstrates that inhalation of PM_2.5 emitted from cooking could result in adverse human health effects.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in permafrost peatlands

The concentrations of 15 individual PAHs in 93 peat cores have been determined by using high-performance liquid chromatography methods. In the profile the qualitative and quantitative composition of PAHs was non-uniform estimated in a wide range: from 112 to 3673 ng/g with mean 1214 ± 794 ng/g. Among 15 identified individual PAHs, the main contribution to their total amount was made by heavy highly condensed PAHs in the Eastern European peat plateaus, in particular, 6-nuclear benzo[ghi]perylene (1021 ± 707 ng/g), whereas in West Siberian permafrost peatlands, light PAHs were dominating, mostly naphthalene and phenanthrene (211 ± 87 and 64 ± 25 ng/g, respectively). The grass-equisetum peat contained the maximum of heavy PAHs and the dwarf shrub-grass—the minimum. In grass-dwarf shrub, grass-moss and moss peat, the share of 2-nuclear PAHs was most significant: naphthalene and fluorene, as well as 6-nuclear benzo[ghi]perylene. The presence of benzo[ghi]perylene in the entire peat strata, including its permafrost layer, was a marker of the anaerobic conditions that persisted throughout the Holocene and they were necessary for the synthesis of this compound.

Occurrence and toxicity of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons derivatives in environmental matrices

In the last years, there is great attention paid to the determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in different environmental matrices. Extensive reviews on PAHs presence and toxicity were published recently. However, PAHs formation and transformation in the environment lead to the production of PAHs derivatives containing oxygen (O-PAHs), nitrogen (N-PAHs and aazarenes AZA) or sulfur (PASHs) in the aromatic ring. The development of new analytical methods enabled the determination of these novel contaminants. The presence of oxygen, nitrogen, or sulfur in PAHs aromatic rings increased their toxicity. The most common primary sources of PAHs derivatives are biological processes such as microbial activity (in soil, water, and wastewater treatment plants (O-PAHs)) and all processes involving combustion of fuel, coal, and biomass (O-PAHs, N-PAHs, AZA, PASHs). The secondary resources involved i) photochemical (UV light), ii) radical-mediated (OH, NO₃), and iii) reactions with oxidants (O₃, NO_x) (O-PAHs, N-PAHs, AZA). Furthermore, N-PAHs were able to transform to their corresponding O-PAHs, while other derivatives were not. It indicated that N-PAHs are more vulnerable to photooxidation in the environment. 85% of O- and N-PAHs were detected with particle matter below 2.5 μm suggesting their easier bioaccessibility. More than 90% of compounds with four and more aromatic cycles were present in the particle phase in the air. Although the concentrations of N-PAHs or O-PAHs may be similar to PAHs concentration or even 1000 times lower than parent PAHs, PAHs derivatives accounted for a significant portion of the total mutagenicity. The present review is describing the results of the studies on the determination of PAHs derivatives in different environmental matrices including airborne particles, sediments, soil, and organisms. The mechanisms of their formation and toxicity were assessed.

Urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons after short-term fine particulate matter exposure: A randomized crossover trial of air filtration

Research on the relationship between short-term exposure to fine particulate matter (PM_2.5) and urinary metabolites of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) is sparse in the nonoccupationally exposed populations. A quasi-experimental observation of haze events nested within a randomized crossover trial of alternative 1-week real or sham indoor air filtration was conducted to evaluate the associations of urinary monohydroxy-PAHs (OH-PAHs) with short-term exposure to PM_2.5 and PM_2.5-bound PAHs. The study was conducted among 57 healthy college students in Beijing, China. PM_2.5-bound PAHs and urinary OH-PAHs were quantified using gas chromatography coupled with a triple-quadrupole tandem mass spectrometer. Linear mixed-effect models were applied to evaluate the association of urinary OH-PAHs with time-weighted personal PM_2.5 and PM_2.5-bound PAHs, controlling for potentially confounding variables. The results demonstrated that air filtration could markedly reduce external exposure to PM_2.5 and PM_2.5-bound parent, nitrated, and oxygenated PAHs. In the intervention trial, the urinary concentrations of 2-hydroxyfluorene (2-OH-FLU) and 9-hydroxyphenanthrene (9-OH-PHE) were elevated significantly by 16.5% (95% CI, 2.1%, 33.1%) and 37.9% (95% CI, 8.4%, 75.4%), respectively, in association with a doubling increase in personal PM_2.5 exposure. Urinary 9-OH-PHE was also significantly positively associated with the increase in the sum of PM_2.5-bound parent PAHs. Furthermore, the levels of urinary OH-PAHs such as 2-OH-FLU and 9-OH-PHE in the haze events were elevated by 31.1% (95% CI, 8.7%, 53.4%) and 73.5% (95% CI, 16.0%, 131.0%), respectively, in association with a doubling increase in personal PM_2.5 exposure. The findings indicated that urinary 2-OH-FLU and 9-OH-PHE could serve as potential internal exposure biomarkers for assessing short-term PM_2.5 exposure in nonoccupational populations.

Mutagenicity risk prediction of PAH and derivative mixtures by in silico simulations oriented from CYP compound I-mediated metabolic activation

PAHs and their derivatives are the main sources of mutagenicity and carcinogenicity in airborne particular matter and cause serious public health and environmental problems. Risk assessment is challenging due to the mixed nature and deficiency of toxicity data of most PAHs and their derivatives. Cytochrome P450 enzymes (CYPs) play important roles in PAH-induced carcinogenicity via metabolic activation, and CYP conformations with compound I structures strongly influence metabolic sites and metabolite species. In this study, complexes of BaP with CYP1A1, CYP1B1 or CYP2C19 compound I were successfully simulated by QM/MM methods and verified by metabolic clearance, and the mutagenicity of chemicals was then predicted by the BaP-7,8-epoxide-related metabolic conformation fitness (MCF) approach, which was validated by Ames tests, showing satisfying accuracy (R² = 0.46-0.66). Furthermore, a prediction model of the mutagenicity risk of PAH and derivative mixtures was established based on the relative potential factor (RPF) approach and the RPF calculated from the mathematical relationship between the minimum MCF (MCF_min) and RPF, which was successfully validated by the mutagenesis of PAH and derivative mixture mimic-simulating PM2.5 samples collected in eastern China. This study provides fast reliable tools for assessing risk of the complex components of environmental PAHs and their derivatives.

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PAHs, oxygenated PAHs, nitrated PAHs, and azaarenes) in air from four climate zones of China: Occurrence, gas/particle partitioning, and health risks

Polycyclic aromatic compounds (PACs) such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their derivatives [oxygenated PAHs (OPAHs), nitrated PAHs (NPAHs), and azaarenes (AZAs)] are toxic and ubiquitous air pollutants. In this study, the concentrations of these PACs were determined in air obtained in spring and autumn of 2012 from urban and rural areas of the Tibetan Plateau, temperate, subtropical, and tropical climate zones in China. Average concentrations (gaseous + particulate) of ∑29PAHs, ∑15OPAHs, ∑11NPAHs, and ∑4AZAs were 928 ± 658, 54 ± 45, 5.3 ± 4.4, 14 ± 11 ng m^-3 and 995 ± 635, 67 ± 38, 8.4 ± 6.1, 24 ± 16 ng m^-3 in spring and autumn, respectively. Various C fractions and latitude correlated significantly with the concentrations and ratios of PACs. The slopes of the regression of gas-particle partition coefficients (K_p) of PACs on their sub-cooled liquid vapor pressures (P_L⁰), indicated both adsorption and absorption to total suspended particles (TSP) for PAHs, OPAHs, and NPAHs in the four studied climatic zones. This result was further supported by comparing the fractions of PACs in TSP calculated from field data with those predicted by the Junge-Pankow adsorption and K_OA absorption models. The concentration ratios of most OPAHs or NPAHs to their parent PAHs and of benzo[e]pyrene/benzo[a]pyrene were higher in autumn than in spring and increased with remoteness from point sources. This suggests enhanced secondary formation of PAH derivatives due to the elevated photochemical activity in autumn and longer ageing of air and associated transformation of PACs during their long-distance transport from source regions (urban sites) to rural sites. Lifetime lung cancer risk estimated from PACs ranged from 0.8 ± 0.6 to 3.1 ± 1.0 (×10^-3), exceeding the value (10^-5) recommended by the WHO. Gaseous PACs contributed substantially to the estimated cancer risks and their contributions increased with decreasing latitude in China.

Effect of Different Pollution Parameters and Chemical Components of PM2.5 on Health of Residents of Xinxiang City, China

The present study was planned to explore the pollution characteristics, health risks, and influence of atmospheric fine particulate matter (PM2.5) and its components on blood routine parameters in a typical industrial city (Xinxiang City) in China. In this study, 102 effective samples 28 (April-May), 19 (July-August), 27 (September-October), 28 (December-January) of PM2.5 were collected during different seasons from 2017 to 2018. The water-soluble ions and metal elements in PM2.5 were analyzed via ion chromatography and inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. The blood routine physical examination parameters under different polluted weather conditions from January to December 2017 and 2018, the corresponding PM2.5 concentration, temperature, and relative humidity during the same period were collected from Second People's Hospital of Xinxiang during 2017-2018. Risk assessment was carried out using the generalized additive time series model (GAM). It was used to analyze the influence of PM2.5 concentration and its components on blood routine indicators of the physical examination population. The "mgcv" package in R.3.5.3 statistical software was used for modeling and analysis and used to perform nonparametric smoothing on meteorological indicators such as temperature and humidity. When Akaike's information criterion (AIC) value is the smallest, the goodness of fit of the model is the highest. Additionally, the US EPA exposure model was used to evaluate the health risks caused by different heavy metals in PM2.5 to the human body through the respiratory pathway, including carcinogenic risk and non-carcinogenic risk. The result showed that the air particulate matter and its chemical components in Xinxiang City were higher in winter as compared to other seasons with an overall trend of winter > spring > autumn > summer. The content of nitrate (NO3-) and sulfate (SO42-) ions in the atmosphere were higher in winter, which, together with ammonium, constitute the main components of water-soluble ions in PM2.5 in Xinxiang City. Source analysis reported that mobile pollution sources (coal combustion emissions, automobile exhaust emissions, and industrial emissions) in Xinxiang City during the winter season contributed more to atmospheric pollution as compared to fixed sources. The results of the risk assessment showed that the non-carcinogenic health risk of heavy metals in fine particulate matter is acceptable to the human body, while among the carcinogenic elements, the order of lifetime carcinogenic risk is arsenic (As) > chromium(Cr) > cadmium (Cd) > cobalt(Co) > nickel (Ni). During periods of haze pollution, the exposure concentration of PM2.5 has a certain lag effect on blood routine parameters. On the day when haze pollution occurs, when the daily average concentration of PM2.5 rises by 10 μg·m-3, hemoglobin (HGB) and platelet count (PLT) increase, respectively, by 9.923% (95% CI, 8.741-11.264) and 0.068% (95% CI, 0.067-0.069). GAM model analysis predicted the maximum effect of PM2.5 exposure concentration on red blood cell count (RBC) and PLT was reached when the hysteresis accumulates for 1d (Lag0). The maximum effect of exposure concentration ofPM2.5 on MONO is reached when the lag accumulation is 3d (Lag2). When the hysteresis accumulates for 6d (Lag5), the exposure concentration of PM2.5 has the greatest effect on HGB. The maximum cumulative effect of PM2.5 on neutrophil count (NEUT) and lymphocyte (LMY) was strongest when the lag was 2d (Lag1). During periods of moderate to severe pollution, the concentration of water-soluble ions and heavy metal elements in PM2.5 increases significantly and has a significant correlation with some blood routine indicators.

Nrf2 modulated the restriction of lung function via impairment of intrinsic autophagy upon real-ambient PM2.5 exposure

Compelling studies approve that fine particle matter (PM_2.5) exposure was associated with high risk of respiratory disorders. However, the available data assessing the detailed influence of PM_2.5 on lung was limited. To overcome the difficulty of inhalational PM_2.5 exposure, the real-ambient PM_2.5 exposure system was constructed. The mice were exposed to filtered air (FA) or real-ambient PM_2.5 (PM_2.5), and the adverse effect on lung was determined. Nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) as a transcription factor, was reported to affect autophagy. Autophagy was proposed as a two-edge sword in respiratory disorders. Here, our data presented that PM_2.5 exposure dramatically reduced the lung function of WT mice rather than Nrf2^-/- mice. Consistently, thickened alveolar walls was observed in WT mice in PM_2.5 exposure group, whereas the histological phenotype of Nrf2^-/- mice exhibited no obvious alteration. Furthermore, PM_2.5 exposure triggered low-grade production of inflammatory profile in WT and Nrf2^-/- mice. Moreover, the protein levels of p62, Beclin1 and LC3B of WT mice rather than Nrf2^-/- mice were also altered in PM_2.5 exposure group. Taken together, the present study applied the real-ambient exposure system, revealed the adverse effect of air pollution on lung, and proposed the underlying mechanism.

The Health Risks of Airborne Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs): Upper North Thailand

Every year, Northern Thailand faces haze pollution during the haze episode. The particulate matter (PM), including fine fraction (PM2.5), a coarse fraction (PM2.5-10), and 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), was measured in six provinces in upper north Thailand during the haze and non-haze episodes in 2018. Eighty-three percent of the PM2.5 measurements (21.8-194.0 µg/m3) during the haze episode exceeded the national ambient air quality standard in Thailand. All 16 PAHs were detected in the study area in both periods. The average concentration of total PAHs (particle-bound and gas-phase) during the haze episode was 134.7 ± 80.4 ng/m3, which was about 26 times higher than those in the non-haze (5.1 ± 9.7 µg/m3). Naphthalene and acenaphthene were the dominant PAHs in the gas phase; whereas, indeno[123-cd] pyrene, benzo[a]pyrene, and Benzo[ghi]Perylene were dominant in the particle-bound phase. The estimated inhalation excess cancer risk from PAHs exposure was 9.3 × 10-4 and 2.5 × 10-5 in the haze episode and non-haze, respectively. Diagnostic ratios and principal component analysis revealed that PAHs were derived from mixed sources of vehicle emission and solid combustion in the haze episode and vehicle emission in the non-haze period. High pollution levels of PM and large cancer risk attributable to the exposure of PAHs in the haze episode suggest urgent countermeasures to reduce the source emission, especially from the solid combustion in the area.

Nitrated and parent PAHs in the surface water of Lake Taihu, China: Occurrence, distribution, source, and human health risk assessment

Nitrated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs) have toxic potentials that are higher than those of their corresponding parent polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and thus have received increasing attention in recent years. In this study, the occurrence, distribution, source, and human health risk assessment of 15 NPAHs and 16 PAHs were investigated in the surface water from 20 sampling sites of Lake Taihu during the dry, normal, and flood seasons of 2018. The ΣPAH concentrations ranged from 255 to 7298 ng/L and the ΣNPAH concentrations ranged from not-detected (ND) to 212 ng/L. Among the target analytes, 2-nitrofluorene (2-nFlu) was the predominant NPAH, with a detection frequency ranging from 85% to 90% and a maximum concentration of 56.2 ng/L. The three-ringed and four-ringed NPAHs and PAHs comprised the majority of the detected compounds. In terms of seasonal variation, the highest levels of the ΣNPAHs and ΣPAHs were in the dry season and flood season, respectively. Diagnostic ratio analysis indicated that the prime source of NPAHs was direct combustion, whereas in the case of PAHs the contribution was predominantly from a mixed pattern including pollution from unburned petroleum and petroleum combustion. The human health risk of NPAHs and PAHs was evaluated using a lifetime carcinogenic risk assessment model. The carcinogenic risk level of the targets ranged from 2.09 × 10^-7 to 5.75 × 10^-5 and some surface water samples posed a potential health risk.

A one-year monitoring of spatiotemporal variations of PM2.5-bound PAHs in Tehran, Iran: Source apportionment, local and regional sources origins and source-specific cancer risk assessment

PM_2.5-bound PAHs were analyzed in a total of 135 daily samples collected during four seasons from 2018 to 2019, at three urban sites in Tehran, Iran. This study aims to investigate spatio-temporal variations, source apportionment, potential local and regional sources contributions and lung cancer risks associated with the 16 US EPA priority PAHs. PM_2.5 concentrations ranged from 43.8 to 80.3 μg m^-3 with the highest concentrations observed in summer. Total PAHs (TPAHs) concentrations ranged between 24.6 and 38.9 ng m^-3. Autumn period exhibited the highest average concentration (48.3 ng m^-3) followed by winter (29.5 ng m^-3), spring (25.9 ng m^-3) and summer (16.1 ng m^-3). Five PAHs sources were identified by positive matrix factorization (PMF) analysis: diesel exhaust, unburned petroleum-petrogenic, industrial, gasoline exhaust and coal/biomass combustion-natural gas emissions, accounting for 22.3%, 15.6%, 7.5%, 30.9%, and 23.6% of TPAHs, respectively. Site-specific bivariate polar (BP) and conditional bivariate probability function (CBPF) plots were computed to assess PM_2.5 and TPAHs local source locations. CBPF pointed out that TPHAs sources are likely of local origin, showing the highest probability close to the sampling sites associated with low wind speed (<5 m s^-1). The potential source contribution function (PSCF) and the concentration weighted trajectory (CWT) models were applied to investigate the long-range transport of PM_2.5 and TPAHs. In addition to local sources contributions, Eastern areas were highly related to long-distance transport of PM_2.5 and the Western areas showed the highest contribution of the total, medium molecular weight (MMW) (4 rings) and high molecular weight (HMW) (5-6 rings) PAHs. The upper bound of incremental lifetime cancer risk (ILCR) via inhalation exposure to PM_2.5-bound PAHs was at a moderate risk level (3.14 × 10^-4 to 6.17 × 10^-4).

Three years of atmospheric concentrations of nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and oxygen heterocycles at a central European background site

Nitrated and oxygenated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (NPAHs, OPAHs) are abundant in the atmosphere and contribute significantly to the health risk associated with inhalation of polluted air. Despite the health hazard they pose, NPAHs and OPAHs were rarely included in monitoring. The aim of this study is to provide the first multi-year temporal trends of the concentrations, composition pattern and fate of NPAHs and OPAHs in air from a site representative of background air quality conditions in central Europe. Samples were collected every second week at a rural background site in the Czech Republic during 2015-2017. Concentrations ranged from 1.3 to 160 pg m^-3 for Σ₁₇NPAHs, from 32 to 2600 pg m^-3 for Σ₁₀OPAHs and from 5.1 to 4300 pg m^-3 for Σ₂O-heterocycles. The average particulate mass fraction (θ) ranged from 0.01 ± 0.02 (2-nitronaphthalene) to 0.83 ± 0.22 (1-nitropyrene) for individual NPAHs and from <0.01 ± 0.01 (dibenzofuran) to 0.96 ± 0.08 (6H-benzo (c,d)pyren-6-one) for individual OPAHs and O-heterocycles. The multiyear variations showed downward trends for a number of targeted compounds. This suggests that on-going emission reductions of PAHs are effective also for co-emitted NPAHs and OPAHs.
