First assessment of triclosan, triclocarban and paraben mass loads at a very large regional scale: case of Paris conurbation (France)

Response pathways of superoxide dismutase and catalase under the regulation of triclocarban-triggered oxidative stress in Eisenia foetida: Comprehensive mechanism analysis based on cytotoxicity and binding model

Triclocarban (TCC) is an emerging environmental contaminant, posing potential ecological risks. Displaying a high accumulation effect and 120-day half-life in the soil environment, the toxic effects of TCC to soil organisms have been widely reported. Previous studies have confirmed that TCC can induce the oxidative stress and changes in superoxide dismutase (SOD) and catalase (CAT) activities in earthworms, but the underlying mechanisms of oxidative stress and disorder in antioxidant enzyme activities induced by TCC have not yet been elucidated. Here, we explored the multiple response mechanisms of SOD and CAT under the regulation of oxidative stress induced by TCC. Results indicated that higher-dose (0-2.0 mg/L) TCC exposure triggered the overproduction of ROS in Eisenia foetida coelomocytes, causing oxidative damage and a decrease in cell viability that was response to ROS accumulation. The TCC-induced inhibition of intracellular SOD/CAT activity was found under the regulation of oxidative stress (SOD: 29.2 %; CAT: 18.5 %), and this effect was blunted by antioxidant melatonin. At the same time, the interaction between antioxidative enzymes and TCC driven by various forces (SOD: electrostatic interactions; CAT: van der Waals forces and hydrogen bonding) led to inhibited SOD activity (9.84 %) and enhanced CAT activity (17.5 %). Then, to elucidate the binding mode of TCC, we explored the changes in SOD and CAT structure (protein backbone and secondary structure), the microenvironment of aromatic amino acids, and aggregation behavior through multispectral techniques. Molecular docking results showed that TCC inhibited SOD activity in a substrate competitive manner and enhanced CAT activity by the stabilizing effects of TCC on the heme groups. Collectively, this study reveals the response mechanisms of SOD/CAT under the regulation of TCC-triggered oxidative stress and shed a new light on revealing the toxic pathways of exogenous pollutants on antioxidant-related proteins function.

Screening of antimicrobials, fragrances, UV stabilizers, plasticizers and preservatives in sewage treatment plants (STPs) and their risk assessment in India

Community/industrial wastewater is the prime source of anthropogenic chemicals, its treatment is often a daunting task and unaffordable for many countries. Emerging Contaminants (ECs) have been drained into wastewater after continuous use/misuse and Conventional treatments in STPs do not remove them completely. ECs including antimicrobial agents, synthetic musks, Benzotriazole UV stabilizers (BUVSs), plasticizers, and preservatives are frequently reported in environment, and cause health effects to non-target organisms. Monitoring of ECs is important to understand their status in aquatic environment. Hence, it was aimed to monitor ECs (n = 21) from 11 STPs in Tamil Nadu, India. The detection frequency of most of these analytes was >90%. Antimicrobials ranged from 247 to 22,714 ng/L and 11-14,369 ng/L in influents and effluents, respectively. The synthetic musks were in the order of Tonalide > Galaxolide > Musk Ketone. BUVSs ranged from 4 to 1632 ng/L (influents) and < LOD to 29,853 ng/L (effluents). Concentration of phthalates in influents and effluents were < LOD - 11,311 ng/L and < LOD - 17,618 ng/L, respectively. Parabens were found in the order of Prophyl > Methyl > Ethyl > Butyl in influents and Methyl > Prophyl > Butyl > Ethyl in effluents. Mass loads of ECs through STPs were found as antimicrobials > plasticizers > fragrances > BUVSs > Preservatives. This study reveals increasing usage of ECs and inadequate treatment processes at STPs in India. Also helps to adopt suitable treatment processes to remove ECs from wastewater and to reuse the wastewater.

Monitoring and eco-toxicity effect of paraben-based pollutants in sediments/seawater, north of the Persian Gulf

The current work is documented as the first record of the characteristics, removal efficiency, partitioning behavior, fate, and eco-toxicological effects of paraben congeners in a municipal wastewater treatment plant (WWTP, stabilization ponds) and hospital WWTPs (septic tank and activated sludge), as well as seawater-sediments collected from runoff estuarine stations (RES) and coastal stations (CS) of the north of the Persian Gulf. The median values of Σparabens at the raw wastewater and effluent of the studied WWTPs were 1884 ng/L and 468 ng/L, respectively. The activated sludge system had a greater removal efficiency (56.10%) in removing ∑parabens than the septic tank (45.05%) and stabilization pond (35.54%). The discharge rates of methyl paraben (MeP) was computed to be 2.23, 21.18, and 9.12 g/d/1000 people for stabilization ponds, septic tank, and activated sludge, respectively. Median concentrations of Σparabens in seawater (103.42 ng/L) and sediments (322.05 ng/g dw) from RES stations were significantly larger than from CS stations (61.2 and 262.0 ng/g dw in seawater and sediments, respectively) (P < 0.05). The median of field-based k_oc for Σparabens was 130.81 cm³/g in RES stations and 189.51 cm³/g in CS stations. It was observed that the concentration of parabens could have negative impacts on some living aquatic populations (invertebrates and bacteria), but the risk was not significant for fishes and algae.

Cosmetic Preservatives: Hazardous Micropollutants in Need of Greater Attention?

In recent years, personal care products (PCPs) have surfaced as a novel class of pollutants due to their release into wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) and receiving environments by sewage effluent and biosolid-augmentation soil, which poses potential risks to non-target organisms. Among PCPs, there are preservatives that are added to cosmetics for protection against microbial spoilage. This paper presents a review of the occurrence in different environmental matrices, toxicological effects, and mechanisms of microbial degradation of four selected preservatives (triclocarban, chloroxylenol, methylisothiazolinone, and benzalkonium chloride). Due to the insufficient removal from WWTPs, cosmetic preservatives have been widely detected in aquatic environments and sewage sludge at concentrations mainly below tens of µg L^-1. These compounds are toxic to aquatic organisms, such as fish, algae, daphnids, and rotifers, as well as terrestrial organisms. A summary of the mechanisms of preservative biodegradation by micro-organisms and analysis of emerging intermediates is also provided. Formed metabolites are often characterized by lower toxicity compared to the parent compounds. Further studies are needed for an evaluation of environmental concentrations of preservatives in diverse matrices and toxicity to more species of aquatic and terrestrial organisms, and for an understanding of the mechanisms of microbial degradation. The research should focus on chloroxylenol and methylisothiazolinone because these compounds are the least understood.

Experimental study of sediment wash-off process over urban road and its dependence on particle size distribution

Sediment originating from the urban road runoff is a main contributor to water pollution in urban areas. The size of the road sediment varies significantly, but its influence on sediment wash-off process has not been well investigated. In this study, sediments with different particle size distributions have been used in rainfall-runoff experiments over idealized urban road surface. The results show that, under the same experimental conditions, the capacity factor C_F increases with the decrease of the median particle diameter D₅₀, which is the dominant influencing factor on C_F. The wash-off coefficient k is affected by both D₅₀ and the grading of sediment. During the wash-off process, D₅₀ of the sediment collected at the outlet increases with time. Such a grain coarsening phenomenon is particularly apparent when the road is originally covered with very fine sediments. Furthermore, the presence of coarse grains slows down the transport of fine sediment whose size is smaller than 14 μm. This shielding effect significantly affects the sediment wash-off process in the early stage of a rainfall event, while later on the interaction between particles of different sizes becomes unimportant. This study advances the understanding of sediment wash-off mechanism on urban road surface.

Fabrication of Ternary Nanoparticles for Catalytic Ozonation to Treat Parabens: Mechanisms, Efficiency, and Effects on Ceratophyllum demersum L. and Eker Leiomyoma Tumor-3 Cells

The use of parabens in personal care products can result in their leakage into water bodies, especially in public swimming pools with insufficient water treatment. We found that ferrite-based nanomaterials could catalytically enhance ozone efficiency through the production of reactive oxygen species. Our objective was to develop a catalytic ozonation system using ternary nanocomposites that could minimize the ozone supply while ensuring the treated water was acceptable for disposal into the environment. A ternary CuFe2O4/CuO/Fe2O3 nanocomposite (CF) delivered excellent degradation performance in catalytic ozonation systems for butylparaben (BP). By calcining with melamine, we obtained the CF/g-C3N4 (CFM) nanocomposite, which had excellent magnetic separation properties with slightly lower degradation efficiency than CF, due to possible self-agglomeration that reduced its electron capture ability. The presence of other constituent ions in synthetic wastewater and actual discharge water resulted in varying degradation rates due to the formation of secondary active radicals. 1O2 and •O2− were the main dominant reactive species for BP degradation, which originated from the O3 adsorption that occurs on the CF≡Cu(I)−OH and CF≡Fe(III)−OH surface, and from the reaction with •OH from indirect ozonation. Up to 50% of O3-treated water resulted in >80% ELT3 cell viability, the presence of well-adhered cells, and no effect on the young tip of Ceratophyllum demersum L. Overall, our results demonstrated that both materials could be potential catalysts for ozonation because of their excellent degrading performance and, consequently, their non-toxic by-products.

Occurrence and Fate of Triclosan and Triclocarban in Selected Wastewater Systems across Durban Metropolis, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa

Triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) are antimicrobial agents that have been used in personal care and consumer products in the past decades. In this study, influent, effluent, and sludge samples collected in selected wastewater treatment plants across the Durban metropolis were qualitatively and quantitatively investigated. It was revealed that the concentration of TCS ranged from 1.906 to 73.462 µg/L, from 1.732 to 6.980 µg/L, and from 0.138 to 2.455 µg/kg in influent, effluent, and sludge samples, respectively. The concentrations of TCC were found to be between 0.320 and 45.261 µg/L, <LOQ−1.103 µg/L, and from 0.107 to 8.827 µg/kg in the influent, effluent, and sludge samples, respectively. Higher concentrations of TCS as compared with TCC were observed in the aqueous samples. However, the concentrations of TCC in the sludge samples were significantly higher than the level of TCS. More water solubility of TCS could be responsible for the observed trend in the influent and effluent samples, while the trend observed in the sludge could be due to the more hydrophobicity character of TCC. The results of this study indicated that substantial amounts of TCS and TCC are been removed during the treatment process which could be a major reason for the decline in the levels recorded in the effluent samples, therefore, reducing the amount of the TCS and TCC that would eventually end up in the surface rivers. Qualitative analyses of the samples indicated the presence of caffeine, tert-butylhydroquinone, chloroxylenol, phenol, 4-(1,1,3,3-tetramethyl butyl), and dimethyl-bisphenol A. Further investigative ecological risk assessment studies are crucial due to the potential threat the contaminants may pose to aquatic lives and humans.

Occurrence and human exposure assessment of parabens in water sources in Osun State, Nigeria

Parabens are chemicals extensively used in pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, personal hygiene and food products as preservatives. They are classified as emerging contaminants with endocrine-disrupting capability. In this study, the concentrations of Methylparaben (MeP), Ethylparaben (EtP), Propylparaben (PrP) and Butylparaben (BuP) were obtained from groundwater, surface-water and packaged water samples collected from urban and rural areas of Osun State, Nigeria using HPLC-UV equipment. Data obtained were subjected to descriptive (Mean ± SD), inferential (Kruskal-Wallis test) and multivariate analyses. MeP had the highest average concentration of 163 and 68 μg L^-1 in surface water and groundwater respectively while concentrations of MeP, EtP, PrP and BuP were higher than previously reported in other countries. Methylparaben had the highest detection frequencies (88.0 and 50.0%) followed by BuP (69.0 and 50.0%) in surface water and groundwater respectively. No significant difference was observed for concentrations of parabens in groundwater samples in urban and rural sampling sites, suggesting that people living around these sites are equally exposed to any health implications from the use of paraben-polluted potable water. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) data suggest that the pairs MeP & EtP, PrP & BuP (in surface water samples) and MeP, EtP, & PrP (in groundwater samples) are from similar pollution sources. Ecological risk assessment using Algae, Fish, and Daphnia suggests Daphnia as the most sensitive organism while BuP and PrP show the highest health risk. Human exposure assessment showed that higher overall median estimated daily intake (EDI) values for groundwater were observed in infants (1.71 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs) compared to toddlers (1.03 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs), children (0.64 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs), teenagers (0.51 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs) and adults (0.62 μg kg^-1 bw day^-1, ∑PBs). Although these values are below limits set in a few countries, potential bioaccumulation could lead to severe health consequences.

Heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate by Co-doped Fe2O3 nanospheres for degradation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid

Environmental remediation has become more effective when using nanotechnologies. In this study, iron oxide (α-Fe₂O₃) nanospheres with different cobalt doping levels (xCo-Fe₂O₃) were synthesised and applied in the heterogeneous activation of peroxymonosulfate (PMS) for the degradation of p-hydroxybenzoic acid (p-HBA). The catalyst (3Co-Fe₂O₃) with 3% Co doping exhibits the best performance for PMS activation, possibly because of the larger specific surface area and the tailored catalyst surface as confirmed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Reaction parameters were investigated to optimise the degradation efficiency. The metal ions leaching tests confirmed the higher stability of the catalyst, thanks to the leaching suppression by the doping of Co²⁺. The main contribution of free radicals (SO₄^•- and ^•OH) was confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectra, whereas partial contribution of oxygen anions and singlet oxygen (O₂^•-, ¹O₂) was observed during the quenching tests. Finally, a radical based degradation mechanism was proposed for the removal of p-HBA. It is expected to open up a novel perspective for the application of iron oxide as a potential catalyst for the removal of emerging contaminants.

Environmentally relevant concentrations of triclocarban affect morphological traits and melanogenesis in zebrafish larvae

Human activity is responsible for producing several chemical compounds, which contaminate the aquatic environment and adversely influence the survival of aquatic species and indirectly human health. Triclocarban (TCC) belongs to the category of emerging pollutants and its presence in aquatic environment is justified by its wide use as antimicrobial agent in personal care products. The concern about this chemical is due to the risk of persistence in water and soils and bioaccumulation, which contributes to human exposition through the contaminated food consumption. The present study evaluated the developmental toxicity of TCC in zebrafish early-life stages starting with the assessment of acute toxicity and then focusing on the integrative analyses of the observed phenotype on zebrafish development. For this purpose, lethal and sublethal alterations of zebrafish embryos were investigated by the Fish Embryo Acute Toxicity Tests (FET tests). Subsequently, two concentrations of TCC were used to investigate the morphometric features and defects in larvae developmental pigmentation: an environmentally relevant (5μg/L) and toxicological (50μg/L), derived from the No Observed Effect Concentration (NOEC) value concentration. Furthermore, the expression levels of a key transcription factor for melanocyte differentiation and melanin syntheses, such as mitfa (microphthalmia-associated transcription factor) and tyr (tyrosinase) and its activity, were evaluated.

Persistence of the parabens in soil and their potential toxicity to earthworms

Due to their antimicrobial activity, parabens are commonly used as preservatives in a variety of consumer goods including cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products. During the production, usage and disposal of these products, parabens are released into the environment. In this study, the persistence of three widely used parabens; methyl-, propyl-, and butyl paraben in soil and their toxic effects on the soil invertebrate, Eisenia fetida was investigated. The results of this study indicate that selected parabens do not negatively affect the survival, growth, and reproduction of Eisenia fetida up to 1000 mg Kg^-1 concentration. Further, these parabens (0-1000 mg Kg^-1) exhibited a low persistence in soil with more than 90 % disappearing within three days. In contrast, only 16-54 % degradation of parabens occurred in frozen soil suggesting a microbial role in parabens degradation. This study demonstrates that methyl-, propyl-, and butyl parabens degrade rapidly in the terrestrial environment and therefore, are unlikely to pose a threat to species such as Eisenia fetida. To our knowledge, this is the first report on the toxicity of parabens to earthworms.

Monitoring dissolved organic matter in wastewater and drinking water treatments using spectroscopic analysis and ultra-high resolution mass spectrometry

Dissolved organic matter (DOM) plays a critical role in determining the quality of wastewater and the safety of drinking water. This is the first review to compare two types of popular DOM monitoring techniques, including absorption spectroscopy and fluorescence excitation-emission matrices (EEMs) coupled with parallel factor analysis (PARAFAC) vs. Fourier transform ion cyclotron resonance mass spectrometry (FT-ICR-MS), for the applications in wastewater and drinking water treatments. The optical techniques provide a series of indices for tracking the quantity and quality of chromophoric and fluorescent DOM, while FT-ICR-MS is capable of identifying thousands of DOM compounds in wastewater and drinking water at the molecule level. Both types of monitoring techniques are increasingly used in studying DOM in wastewater and drinking water treatments. They provide valuable insights into the variability of DOM composition in wastewater and drinking water. The complexity and diversity of DOM highlight the challenges for effective water treatments. Different effects of various treatment processes on DOM are also assessed, which indicates that the information on DOM composition and its removal is key to optimize the treatment processes. Considering notable progress in advanced treatment processes and novel materials for removing DOM, it is important to continuously utilize these powerful monitoring tools for assessing the responses of different DOM constituents to a series of treatment processes, which can achieve an effective removal of DOM and the quality of treated water.

Genotoxicity assessment of triclocarban by comet and micronucleus assays and Ames test

The widespread usage and ubiquitous distribution of triclocarban (3,4,4'-trichlorocarbanilide, TCC) have raised public concerns about its health effects. At present, there is little information about the genotoxicity of TCC. In this study, we used a battery of genotoxicity testing methods including salmonella reverse mutation test (Ames test), comet assay and micronucleus assay to detect the effects of TCC on gene mutation, DNA breakage, and chromosome damage. The results of Ames test showed that TCC at 0.1-1000 μg/plate did not significantly increase the number of revertant colonies in the four standard Salmonella typhimurium strains, i.e., TA97, TA98, TA100, and TA102, when compared to the vehicle control. The results from comet assay demonstrated that exposure to 5, 10, or 15 μM TCC for 24 h did not significantly increase the percentage of comet cells, tail length (TL), DNA in tail (T DNA%), or olive tail moment (OTM) in keratinocyte HaCaT and hepatic L02 cells. Moreover, TCC did not markedly enhance the frequency of micronucleated cells or micronuclei in HaCaT and L02 cells in the micronucleus assay. Taken together, the results indicated that TCC did not exhibit any genotoxic effects. Our study provides additional information for the safety profile of TCC.

Four typical personal care products in a municipal wastewater treatment plant in China: Occurrence, removal efficiency, mass loading and emission

The occurrence, removal efficiency, mass loading and environmental emission of four categories (benzotriazoles; parabens; antimicrobials; benzophenones) of personal care products were simultaneously determined along the whole process line through an integrated approach (involving both dissolved and adsorbed phase) at a typical wastewater treatment plant in Hunan Province, Southern China. The results showed the prevalence of 13 and 11 target compounds in wastewater and suspended particulate matter, respectively. Twelve substances were detected in the sludge with the mean concentrations ranging from 0.12 to 591.23 ng/g dry weight. Benzotriazoles were the dominant compounds existing in water and antimicrobials were readily being absorbed onto suspended particulate matter and sludge. The overall removal efficiencies of compounds in the total treatment were -84.06%-98.53%. Mass balance results revealed that 85.17%-98.73% of the parabens and benzophenones were removed by degradation, while antimicrobials were removed by being adsorbed onto sludge. However, benzotriazoles could not be efficiently removed and the mass loss was lower than 61.03%. Although ultraviolet radiation played a limited role in removing most target compounds, it still had an impact on removing antimicrobials, 5,6-dimethyl-1H-benzotriazole and 2-hydroxy-4-methoxybenzophenone. The total mass loading and emission of personal care products were 506.35 mg/d/1000 people and 357.56 mg/d/1000 people, respectively. This work would help understand the removal approaches and real pollution of personal care products in the water environment.

Effects of triclosan on early development of Solea senegalensis: from biochemical to individual level

Harmful effects of triclosan (TCS) have been reported on several organisms; however, effects on early life stages of marine vertebrates are limited. Therefore, the objective of this work was to assess the effects of TCS during early development of the flatfish Solea senegalensis after initial characterization of cholinesterases (ChEs) and determination of selected biochemical markers baseline levels. Characterization of ChEs and determination of biochemical markers baseline levels of cholinergic activity, energy metabolism and oxidative stress were analysed in sole at 3 days after hatching (dah) and at the onset and end of metamorphosis. To assess TCS effects, fish were exposed during 96h to 30-500 μg L^-1 TCS until 3 dah. Fish at 13 dah were exposed during 48h to 200-1,500 μg L^-1 TCS and maintained until complete metamorphosis. Effects on survival, malformations, length, metamorphosis progression and biochemical markers were evaluated. The main ChE active form present in sole early life stages is acetylcholinesterase and baseline levels of oxidative stress and energy metabolism biomarkers changed according to fish developmental stage. Triclosan induced malformations (EC₅₀ = 180 μg L^-1 at 3 dah), decreased growth (95 μg L^-1 at 3 dah; 548 μg L^-1 at 24 dah) and affected metamorphosis progression (391 μg L^-1 at 17 dah). Impairment of antioxidant system was observed, with TCS affecting catalase at the end of metamorphosis test, however, no oxidative damage on lipids was detected. Glutathione S-transferase was the most sensitive endpoint during early larval test (LOEC = 30 μg L^-1). Exposure to TCS affected S. senegalensis at individual and sub-individual levels, both at early larval stage and during the critical period of metamorphosis.

An Immunoaffinity Purification Method for the Simultaneous Analysis of Triclocarban and Triclosan in Foodstuffs by Liquid Chromatography Tandem Mass Spectrometry

Triclocarban (TCC) and triclosan (TCS) have been simultaneously detected in five kinds of foodstuffs using an immunoaffinity purification method coupled with ultrahigh-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (UHPLC-MS/MS) for the first time. Two highly specific monoclonal antibodies against TCC and TCS were produced and coupled to N-hydroxysuccinimide-activated Sepharose 6B gel to prepare the immunosorbent. Under the optimal conditions, mean recoveries from spiked samples by the IAC-UHPLC-MS/MS method were 70.1-92.8% for TCC and 76.6-102.5% for TCS. Intraday relative standard deviations were below 14.5%. The limits of quantification (LOQs) of TCC were 1 ng/L for beverage samples and 0.01-0.02 μg/kg for food samples. The LOQs of TCS were 0.03 μg/L for beverage samples and 0.2-0.3 μg/kg for food samples. The applicability of the method has been proven by analyzing TCC and TCS in different samples from supermarkets in Beijing. The proposed method is sufficiently sensitive and reliable for monitoring trace concentrations of TCC and TCS in food samples.

Contaminants of emerging concern in a freeze-thaw river during the spring flood

Pharmaceuticals, personal care products, and environment estrogens, as contaminants of emerging concern (CECs), have been widely detected in aquatic environments around the world. However, surveys of seasonal freeze-thaw rivers with special hydrological features are limited. To address this, in this study the occurrence, distribution, ecological risk, and mass flux of 22 CECs in the Jilin Songhua River in northeast China, a famously seasonal freeze-thaw river at mid- and high-latitude regions, were investigated during its spring flood period. The results indicate that estriol had a maximum concentration of 27.4 ng·L^-1 in the mainstream river water. Doxycycline had a maximum concentration of 204.4 ng·L^-1 in the tributary river water and 103.0 ng·L^-1 in the riverine wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) effluents. The mean concentrations of the targeted CECs in the spring flood were 1.4 times higher than those found in our previous investigation during the summer flood. A risk assessment showed that estrone posed a high risk in the mainstream, doxycycline posed a high risk in the tributaries, and ofloxacin posed a high risk in the riverine WWTP effluents. In addition, erythromycin and lincomycin posed a medium to high risk in the river water and WWTP effluents. The major contribution of the CECs in the mainstream came from its tributaries, which contributed a total of >50% in the spring flood period. The results suggest that some appropriate measures should be taken to reduce the contribution of the CECs from the tributaries to the seasonal freeze-thaw river in its spring flood period.

Effect of PHRs and PCPs on Microalgal Growth, Metabolism and Microalgae-Based Bioremediation Processes: A Review

In this review, the effect of pharmaceuticals (PHRs) and personal care products (PCPs) on microalgal growth and metabolism is reported. Concentrations of various PHRs and PCPs that cause inhibition and toxicity to growths of different microalgal strains are summarized and compared. The effect of PHRs and PCPs on microalgal metabolism (oxidative stress, enzyme activity, pigments, proteins, lipids, carbohydrates, toxins), as well as on the cellular morphology, is discussed. Literature data concerning the removal of PHRs and PCPs from wastewaters by living microalgal cultures, with the emphasis on microalgal growth, are gathered and discussed. The potential of simultaneously bioremediating PHRs/PCPs-containing wastewaters and cultivating microalgae for biomass production in a single process is considered. In the light of reviewed data, the feasibility of post-bioremediation microalgal biomass is discussed in terms of its contamination, biosafety and further usage for production of value-added biomolecules (pigments, lipids, proteins) and biomass as a whole.

Nationwide reconnaissance of five parabens, triclosan, triclocarban and its transformation products in sewage sludge from China

China's rapid growth of both population size and sanitation infrastructure have created a heightened need for responsible management of sewage sludge. We applied liquid chromatography in conjunction with isotope dilution tandem mass spectrometry to measure multiple endocrine disrupting antimicrobials and their transformation products in 100 sewage sludge samples collected across 21 Chinese provinces/districts. Occurrences (detection frequencies) and concentrations (ng/g dry weight) were as follows: triclosan (99%; <4-4870), triclocarban (95%; <3-43,300), 2'-hydroxy-triclocarban (94%; <1-2340), 3'-hydroxy-triclocarban (91%; <1-1250), 3,3',4,4'-tetrachlorocarbanilide (100%; 22-580), dichlorocarbanilide (94%; <2-23,890), monocarbanilide (92%; <2-120), carbanilide (90%; <3-1,340), and five parabens: methyl- (98%; <2-630), ethyl- (96%; <2-170), propyl- (99%; <2-27), butyl- (89%; <2-11) and benzyl-paraben (7%; <2-12). The transformation products of triclocarban were measured for the first time in Chinese wastewater system, and ratios of transformation products to parental triclocarban indicate ongoing triclocarban dechlorination during wastewater treatment. Contaminant profiles and concentrations differed by region, treatment capacity, and wastewater type. Extrapolation of collected data yielded an estimate for the total mass of 13 analytes sequestered in Chinese sewage sludge of 68 t/y with an upper bound of 400 t/y. This China-wide survey established baseline levels of selected antimicrobials in sludges whose current disposal is performed with little regulatory oversight and enforcement.

Concentrations and fate of parabens and their metabolites in two typical wastewater treatment plants in northeastern China

Parabens are widely used in food, pharmaceuticals, and personal care products because they are excellent preservatives. Recently, the environmental fate of parabens has attracted attention owing to their similarity to some endocrine disrupters. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) are both important sinks of parabens discharged from our daily activities and key pollution sources for the environment if the parabens are not completely removed. However, research in this area is scarce, especially in Asia. In this study, 6 commonly used parabens and 4 metabolites were analyzed in wastewater and sludge samples from two typical WWTPs with different treatment processes (the anaerobic-oxic (A/O) and cyclic activated sludge technology (CAST) treatment processes). The average concentrations of parabens in the A/O and CAST treatment processes were 1510 ng/L and 2180 ng/L, respectively, in the influent, and 70.5 ng/L and 19.7 ng/L, respectively, in the effluent. The paraben removal efficiencies in the A/O treatment process were between 56.8% and 100%, which is lower than the efficiencies for the CAST treatment process (97.7% to 100%). The average concentrations of metabolites in the A/O treatment process, which were much higher than paraben concentrations, were 35,200 ng/L in the influent, 334 ng/L in the effluent, and 146 ng/g in the sludge samples. The removal efficiencies for the 4 metabolites were >92% for the A/O treatment process. In total, for the A/O treatment process, 5.07 kg and 16.8 kg of parabens, and 24.4 kg and 16.0 kg of metabolites, were discharged into the environment annually via effluent and sludge, respectively. Overall, the results of this study indicate that the A/O and CAST treatment processes are both effective at removing parabens and their metabolites.

A new analytical framework for multi-residue analysis of chemically diverse endocrine disruptors in complex environmental matrices utilising ultra-performance liquid chromatography coupled with high-resolution tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry

This manuscript presents a comprehensive analytical framework for identification and quantification of chemically diverse endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) used in personal care and consumer products in diverse solid and liquid environmental matrices with an ultimate goal of evaluating public exposure to EDCs via water fingerprinting. Liquid chromatography coupled with tandem quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (UHPLC-ESI-MS/MS) was used for targeted analysis of selected EDCs as well as to identify and quantify a few metabolites using post-acquisition data mining. Solid-phase extraction (SPE) was applied to liquid matrices in order to reduce matrix effects and provide required sample concentration and ultimately, high sensitivity and selectivity of measurements. SPE recoveries in liquid samples ranged from 49 to 140% with method quantification limits not exceeding 1 ng L⁻¹ for the majority of EDCs. Microwave-assisted extraction (MAE) was applied to solid samples and when followed by SPE, it permitted the analysis of EDCs in digested sludge. MAE/SPE recoveries varied from 11 to 186% and MQLs between 0.03 and 8.1 ng g⁻¹ with the majority of compounds showing MQLs below 2 ng g⁻¹. Mass error for quantifier and qualifier ions was below 5 ppm when analysing river water and effluent wastewater and below 10 ppm when analysing influent wastewater and solid samples. The method was successfully applied to environmental samples, with 33 EDCs identified and quantified in wastewater and receiving waters. In addition, several EDCs were found in digested sludge, which confirms that for a more comprehensive understanding of exposure patterns and environmental impact, analysis of solids cannot be neglected. Finally, post-acquisition data mining permitted the identification and quantification of a metabolite of BPA and the identification of a metabolite of 4-Cl-3-methylphenol.

An evaluation on the intra-day dynamics, seasonal variations and removal of selected pharmaceuticals and personal care products from urban wastewater treatment plants

Pharmaceuticals and personal care products (PPCPs) in wastewater have become an emerging issue due to their negative effects on human health and aquatic ecosystems. Two full-scale municipal and industrial wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) along the Songhua River were chosen to evaluate the intra-day dynamics, seasonal variations and removal of 12 selected PPCPs. Our results suggested that the selected PPCPs were frequently detected in the influent and effluent. Caffeine was the predominant compound in the influent; while the selected PPCPs was dominated by TCS in the effluent, suggesting the different fates of selected PPCPs in the WWTPs. The intra-day dynamics of PPCPs in the influent were evaluated, suggesting that the 12 PPCPs can be grouped into three categories because of their different use patterns. The analysis of seasonal changes of PPCPs concentrations in the WWTPs suggested that the concentrations of some PPCPs were influenced by the chemical usage, degradation and temperature. The removal efficiency for the PPCPs were very high with the values ranged from 70.0% to 99.7% for WWTP#1, and from 62.5% to 99.4% for WWTP#2. Significant seasonal variations of PPCPs removal efficiency were observed. Base on the mass loading of PPCPs in the two WWTPs, our results suggested that WWTP#1 in the urban core received much more PPCPs in comparison to WWTP#2 in the suburban regions, suggesting that influences of the service population.

Effects of triclocarban on oxidative stress and innate immune response in zebrafish embryos

Triclocarban (TCC) is used in many household and personal hygiene products. TCC has been widely detected in wastewater around the world. The present study reveals that TCC can activate oxidative stress, induce total antioxidant capacity expression and lipid peroxidation, and increase the activities of superoxide dismutase and other antioxidant enzymes to resist oxidative damage. A significant induction of concentrations of proinflammatory mediator and nitric oxide (NO), accompanied by an upregulated expression of inducible NO synthase gene, was detected in zebrafish embryos exposed to TCC. The transcription of immune-response-related genes, including tnf-α, il-1β, il-4, il-8, and cxcl-clc, was significantly upregulated on exposure to TCC. Furthermore, we found that the exposure of zebrafish embryos to TCC decreased immune cell recruiting in the head. Expressions of nf-κb, trif, myd88, irak4, and traf6 were altered on exposure to TCC. These results demonstrated that exposure to TCC at environmental concentrations significantly affects the expression of immune-response-related genes in zebrafish embryos following oxidative stress and the release of proinflammatory mediators through Toll-like receptor signaling pathway. Thus, we assumed that the ecological risk of TCC on aquatic organisms could not be ignored.

Transesterification of para-hydroxybenzoic acid esters (parabens) in the activated sludge

Hydrolysis is generally considered as the main pathway for the degradation of ester-type pollutants in aquatic environments. In this study, we found that when methanol or ethanol presented as the external carbon in the activated sludge, transesterification is very important for the degradation of para-hydroxybenzoic acid esters (parabens). In the activated sludge solutions with 1% methanol added, contribution of transesterification to the degradation of the propyl substituted paraben (PrP) and ethyl substituted paraben (EtP) accounted for 46% and 83%, respectively, in the early stage of the reaction. This indicates that in aquatic environments with alcohols presence, parabens prefer to form small molecule homologues than hydrolysis to acid. The predominant transesterification in the activated sludge is related to enzyme preference. Amano lipase from Pseudomonas fluorescens was verified to catalyze hydrolysis and transesterification of parabens, while the latter was dominant in water solution with 1% methanol or ethanol. Considering the common application of small molecular alcohols as the external carbon sources in wastewater treatment plants, transesterification might be an important pathway for the degradation of parabens pollutants in these engineering aquatic environments.

Biocides in the river system of a highly urbanized region: A systematic investigation involving runoff input

This study aimed to investigate the occurrence of 19 biocides in the aquatic environments (including runoffs) of a highly urbanized region, and then analyze the sources and ecological risks of target biocides in the river system. The investigated results showed that 19 target biocides were universally detected in surface water (17), sediment (19) and rainfall runoff (18). The tributaries of the river system were seriously contaminated by the biocides compared to the main stream. The prominent biocides in the riverine environment were methylparaben, climbazole and N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide (DEET) for surface water, climbazole, triclosan and triclocarban for sediment, and DEET and carbendazim for rainfall runoff. The biocides source analysis based on the mass contribution suggested that domestic wastewater was a dominant input source for most biocides in the riverine environment, while rainfall runoff was another crucial input source for some biocides, especially for DEET and carbendazim. The ecological risk assessment revealed that some high levels biocides (e.g. clotrimazole, carbendazim, and triclosan) could pose potential ecological risks to aquatic organisms. Therefore, it is essential that some efficient measures should be taken to reduce the input of biocides to river system from different sources.

Population mobility and urban wastewater dynamics

Dynamic influent models, which have been proposed to test control strategies using virtual wastewater treatment plants, should be as realistic as possible. The number of inhabitants in the catchment at any given time and their ways of life are among the parameters affecting the quality of these models. Census data related to work and school commutes were used to evaluate the number of people present in a given urban area. Based on the example of a large urban catchment (Grand Nancy, France), the results show that a population increase of 30% could occur during working hours resulting from the imbalance between workers leaving and coming into the catchment. Combined with information related to the local way of life, variation in the population helps to explain changes in wastewater flow rate and pollution (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus and heavy metals), which present several maxima reflecting daily activities, such as bladder voiding, meals, the use of washrooms, etc. However, no well-defined variation patterns for pH and conductivity, which are linked to the concentrations of anions and cations in the wastewater, were observed. Slight reductions (up to 10% on Sundays) in the flow and pollution load were observed on weekends as the commuter flow decreased. Census data proved to be efficient in helping to understand the daily pattern of urban wastewater characteristics.

Occurrence and fate of emerging contaminants in municipal wastewater treatment plants from different geographical regions-a review

Emerging contaminants, such as antibiotics, pharmaceuticals, personal care products, hormones, and artificial sweeteners, are recognized as new classes of water contaminants due to their proven or potential adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. This review provides comprehensive data on the occurrence of 60 emerging contaminants (ECs) in influent, treated effluent, sludge, and biosolids in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In particular, data on the occurrence of ECs in the influents and effluents of WWTPs are systematically summarized and categorized according to geographical regions (Asia, Europe, and North America). The occurrence patterns of ECs in raw influent and treated effluents of WWTPs between geographical regions were compared and evaluated. Concentrations of most ECs in raw influent in Asian region tend to be higher than those in European and North American countries. Many antibiotics were detected in the influents and effluents of WWTPs at concentrations close to or exceeding the predicted no-effect concentrations (PNECs) for resistance selection. The efficacy of EC removal by sorption and biodegradation during wastewater treatment processes are discussed in light of kinetics and parameters, such as sorption coefficients (K_d) and biodegradation constants (k_biol), and physicochemical properties (i.e. log K_ow and pK_a). Commonly used sampling and monitoring strategies are critically reviewed. Analytical research needs are identified, and novel investigative approaches for future monitoring studies are proposed.

Evaluation of the methods for quantifying particle wash-off loadings in urban impervious surfaces at small scales

Quantifying road-deposited sediment (RDS) wash-off is critical in estimating pollutant load and for supporting the designs of urban storm water low-impact development (LID) best management practices (BMPs). The objective of this study was to identify a simple and effective small-scale wash-off load estimation and prediction method suitable for BMP engineering. The reliabilities, complexities, and applicabilities of four prediction methods (i.e., the event mean concentration (EMC) equation method, the exponential equation method, and the RDS mass difference before and after rainfall event method, and the RDS index model) were tested for three sites (i.e., a newly built area, and built-up area, and conservation area) during five natural rainfall events. Taking the calculations by the EMC method as standard results revealed the following. (1) The degree of agreement of the methods with the standard results in descending order was exponential equation method > RDS index model > RDS mass difference. (2) The degree of complexity of the studied methods in descending order was exponential equation method > the EMC equation method > the RDS index model > the RDS mass difference. (3) When considering the applicability of the models in terms of LID-BMP engineering, the RDS index model could be considered optimal for supporting the design of urban storm water BMPs.

Quantitative risk assessment of antimicrobials in biosolids applied on agricultural land and potential translocation into food

The use of biosolids as a fertiliser may be an indirect route for contaminants into the food chain. One of the main concerns regarding the spreading of biosolids on agricultural land is the potential uptake of contaminants into plants which may bio-transfer into grazing animals that supply the food chain directly (e.g. meat and milk) and hence are subsequently consumed. The aim of this project was to create a quantitative risk assessment model to estimate the fate and translocation of triclosan (TCS) and triclocarban (TCC) into the feed (grass) and food chain with subsequent human exposure. The model's results indicate that TCS and TCC have low potential to transfer into milk and beef following the ingestion of contaminated grass by dairy cows. Mean estimated TCS and TCC residues in milk and beef show that TCC had the greatest concentration (mean values of 7.77×10^-6mgkg^-1 in milk and 1.36×10^-4mgkg^-1 in beef). Human exposure results show that TCC was greater for milk consumption in infants (1-4years) (mean value 1.14×10^-7mgkg^-1bwd^-1) and for beef consumption by teens (12-17years) (mean value 6.87×10^-8mgkg^-1bwd^-1). Concentrations of TCS and TCC were well below the estimated acceptable daily intake (ADI). Human health risk was estimated by evaluation of the hazard quotient (HQ), which used the NOAEL as a toxicity endpoint, combined with milk and beef human exposure estimates. HQ results show that all values were <0.01 (no existing risk). A sensitivity analysis revealed that the K_ow and initial concentration in biosolids as the parameters of greatest importance (correlation coefficients 0.91 and 0.19, respectively). This highlights the importance of physio-chemical properties of the compounds and their detection in biosolids post wastewater treatment along with their persistence in soil following application. This model is a valuable tool in which to ascertain the potential transfer of contaminants in the environment into animal forage with knock on consequences for exposure through the human food chain.

Occurrence of and human exposure to parabens, benzophenones, benzotriazoles, triclosan and triclocarban in outdoor swimming pool water in Changsha, China

The entry of personal care products (PCPs) into the environment has, in turn, caused negative influences to human health. Public swimming pools are places that have attracted increasing concerns. In this article, 35 outdoor swimming pools in Changsha City (China) were examined in view of the occurrence of 22 target PCPs contaminants, which fall into four categories: preservatives, UV filters, anticorrosion agents, and antimicrobials. Out of them, 16 compounds were detected in the collected samples. The preservatives was the most dominant category, with methyl paraben being the top compound (a.v. 0.85μg/L) followed by p-hydroxybenzoic acid (a.v. 0.13μg/L) and 1H-benzotriazole (a.v. 0.14μg/L). The correlations among 22 PCPs and their four categories were evaluated using the nonparametric Spearman correlations analysis. In the source tracing investigation, the level of PCPs in swimming pools was determined to be primarily associated with the consumption of these products while weakly related to the filling waters. The quantitative risk assessment revealed that the PCPs concentrations were at a safe level.

Occurrence and fate of parabens and their metabolites in five sewage treatment plants in India

Parabens (p-hydroxy benzoic acid esters) are antimicrobial agents, used widely as preservatives in personal care products (PCPs), pharmaceuticals, foods, and beverages. PCPs that contain parabens are a major source of these chemicals in sewage treatment plants (STPs). Very few studies have demonstrated the occurrence of parabens in wastewater. In this study, the occurrence and fate of six parabens, methyl-(MeP), ethyl-(EtP), propyl-(PrP), butyl-(BuP), hepty-(HpP) and benzyl-(BzP) parabens, and five of their metabolites (4-HB, 3,4-DHB, OH-MeP, OH-EtP and BA) were studied in five STPs in India. The concentrations of parent parabens (∑₆parent parabens) in five STPs ranged between 131 and 920ng/L in influent; 16 and 67ng/L in effluent; and 104 and 1090ng/g, dry weight, in sludge samples. The sum concentrations of five paraben metabolites (∑₅paraben metabolites) in five STPs ranged between 4110 and 34,600ng/L in influent; 2560 and 3800ng/L in effluent; and 1220 and 35,900ng/g, dry weight, in sludge samples. These values were higher than those reported for many industrialized countries. We calculated the mass loadings, removal efficiencies, and environmental emissions of parabens based on the measured concentrations in influents, effluents, and sludge. The mean removal efficiencies of parent parabens and their metabolites ranged from 80% to 100% and 28% to 76%, respectively.

Biocides in wastewater treatment plants: Mass balance analysis and pollution load estimation

This study aimed to investigate the occurrence and removal of 19 biocides in ten different wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), then estimate the usages and emissions per capita of 19 biocides based on mass balance analysis approach. The results showed that target biocides were universally detected in the WWTPs and their receiving rivers, and 19 for liquid samples and 18 for solid samples. The prominent compound for liquid was DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), with its maximum concentration of 393ng/L in influent; while that for solid was triclocarban with its maximum concentration of 2.11×10³ng/g in anaerobic sludge. Most biocides were readily removed from the liquid phase of ten WWTPs, and the mean removal rate to ∑19 biocides was up to 75%. The removals of target biocides were attributed to biodegradation and adsorption onto activated sludge. The mean input per capita for ∑19 biocides based on influent was 907μg/d/person, while the emissions per capita were 187μg/d/person for effluent, and 121μg/d/person for excess sludge. As demonstrated, the biocides contamination of the receiving rivers could pose potential ecological risks for aquatic organisms. Therefore, advanced wastewater treatment technologies should be developed to reduce the emission of biocides into the receiving environment.

Occurrence and removal of multiple classes of antibiotics and antimicrobial agents in biological wastewater treatment processes

Very little information on the occurrence and fate of multiple classes of antimicrobials in the aquatic environment is reported for the Southeast Asian region. This study provides the first and comprehensive data on the occurrence of ten different classes of antimicrobials in wastewater samples for Singapore. Among the investigated antimicrobials, 19 out of 21 target compounds were detected in 100% of the collected raw influent samples. Concentrations of the detected antimicrobials in raw influent varied from 23.8 to 43,740 ng/L. Removal of antimicrobials by conventional activated sludge (CAS) and membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems at a local wastewater treatment plant was evaluated. MBR exhibited better performance over CAS for most target antimicrobials. Beta-lactam, glycopeptide, and fluoroquinolone classes were largely eliminated by biological wastewater treatment processes, whereas trimethoprim and lincosamides appeared to be persistent. Effects of physicochemical properties and chemical structures of target antimicrobials on their removal efficiencies/mechanisms during wastewater treatment process were also discussed.

A new approach of monitoring and physically-based modelling to investigate urban wash-off process on a road catchment near Paris

Nowadays, the increasing use of vehicles is causing contaminated stormwater runoff to drain from roads. The detailed understanding of urban wash-off processes is essential for addressing urban management issues. However, existing modelling approaches are rarely applied for these objectives due to the lack of realistic input data, unsuitability of physical descriptions, and inadequate documentation of model testing. In this context, we implement a method of coupling monitoring surveys with the physically-based FullSWOF (Full Shallow Water equations for Overland Flow) model (Delestre et al., 2014) and the process-based H-R (Hairsine-Rose) model (Hairsine and Rose, 1992a, 1992b) to evaluate urban wash-off process on a road catchment near Paris (Le Perreux sur Marne, Val de Marne, France, 2661 m(2)). This work is the first time that such an approach is applied for road wash-off modelling in the context of urban stormwater runoff. On-site experimental measurements have shown that only the finest particles of the road dry stocks could be transferred to the sewer inlet during rainfall events, and most Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) are found in the particulate phase. Simulations over different rainfall events represent promising results in reproducing the various dynamics of water flows and sediment transports at the road catchment scale. Elementary Effects method is applied for sensitivity analysis. It is confirmed that settling velocity (Vs) and initial dry stocks (S) are the most influential parameters in both overall and higher order effects. Furthermore, flow-driven detachment seems to be insignificant in our case study, while raindrop-driven detachment is shown to be the major force for detaching sediment from the studied urban surface. Finally, a multiple sediment classification regarding the Particle Size Distribution (PSD) can be suggested for improving the model performance for future studies.

Possible underestimations of risks for the environment due to unregulated emissions of biocides from households to wastewater

The aim of this study was to investigate the role of household products as possible sources of biocidal active substances in municipal wastewater and their regulation under the Biocidal Products Regulation (EU) 528/2012. In 131 households, we investigated the prevalence of products used to control pests, washing and cleaning agents and select personal care products with high release to wastewater. Inventories of these products were established with the help of barcode scanning. All uses of biocidal active substances were evaluated regarding their assessment under the Biocidal Products Regulation. 2963 products were scanned in total, with 48% being washing and cleaning agents, 43% personal care products and 9% products used to control pests. Biocidal active substances were found in each household. These were observed primarily in washing and cleaning agents and personal care products (90%), while only a small percentage of the observations of biocidal active substances was in biocidal products. 64% of the observations of biocidal active substances were in applications that do not fall under the Biocidal Products Regulation and are thus not subject to its environmental risk assessment. This study shows clearly that risks for the environment are underestimated because unregulated emissions to wastewater occur. It demonstrates that there are gaps in the current chemical legislation that lead to a release of substances into wastewater that were not subject to environmental risk assessment under the Biocidal Products Regulation. This is one example of the limitations of scientific risk assessment of chemicals - its complexity is immense. From our point of view, the results underline the importance of a sustainable use of the substances as this is the only way to decrease yet unidentified risks.

Cosmet'eau-Changes in the personal care product consumption practices: from whistle-blowers to impacts on aquatic environments

The Cosmet'eau project (2015-2018) investigates the "changes in the personal care product (PCP) consumption practices: from whistle-blowers to impacts on aquatic environments." In this project, the example of PCPs will be used to understand how public health concerns related to micropollutants can be addressed by public authorities-including local authorities, industries, and consumers. The project aims to characterize the possible changes in PCP consumption practices and to evaluate the impact of their implementation on aquatic contamination. Our goals are to study the whistle-blowers, the risk perception of consumers linked with their practices, and the contamination in parabens and their substitutes, triclosan, and triclocarban from wastewater to surface water. The project investigates the following potential solutions: modifications of industrial formulation or changes in consumption practices. The final purpose is to provide policy instruments for local authorities aiming at building effective strategies to fight against micropollutants in receiving waters.

Fate of Parabens and Their Metabolites in Two Wastewater Treatment Plants in New York State, United States

Little is known about the occurrence and fate of parabens and their metabolites in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). In this study, mass loadings, removal efficiencies, and environmental emission of six parabens, four of their metabolites (4-hydroxy benzoate, 3,4-dihydroxy benzoate, methyl-protocatechuate, and ethyl-protocatechuate) and benzoic acid were studied based on the concentrations determined in wastewater influent, primary effluent, final effluent, suspended particulate matter (SPM), and sludge collected from two WWTPs (denoted as WWTP(A) and WWTP(B)) in the Albany area of New York State. The median respective concentrations of sum of parabens (Σparabens = 6 parent compounds) and paraben-metabolites (Σmetabolites = 4 metabolites) were 73.1-158 and 5460-10,000 ng/L in influents, and 1.96-5.57 and 2060-2550 ng/L in final effluents. The concentrations of Σmetabolites were significantly higher than those of Σparabens in sludge and SPM. The removal efficiencies for parabens (89.6-99.9%) were higher than those for their metabolites (25.9-90.6%). The respective mass loadings of parabens and their metabolites were 46.3 and 6210 mg/d/1000 people for WWTP(A) and 176 and 63,100 mg/d/1000 people for WWTP(B). The environmental emission of parabens and their metabolites through WWTP discharges was 4.85-6.16 and 1270-2050 mg/d/1000 people, respectively.

Removal of a wide range of emerging pollutants from wastewater treatment plant discharges by micro-grain activated carbon in fluidized bed as tertiary treatment at large pilot scale

Among the solutions to reduce micropollutant discharges into the aquatic environment, activated carbon adsorption is a promising technique and a large scale pilot has been tested at the Seine Centre (240,000 m(3)/d - Paris, France) wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). While most of available works studied fixed bed or contact reactors with a separated separation step, this study assesses a new type of tertiary treatment based on a fluidized bed containing a high mass of activated carbon, continuously renewed. For the first time in the literature, micro-grain activated carbon (μGAC) was studied. The aims were (1) to determine the performances of fluidized bed operating with μCAG on both emerging micropollutants and conventional wastewater quality parameters, and (2) to compare its efficiency and applicability to wastewater to former results obtained with PAC. Thus, conventional wastewater quality parameters (n=11), pharmaceuticals and hormones (PPHs; n=62) and other emerging pollutants (n=57) have been monitored in μGAC configuration during 13 campaigns. A significant correlation has been established between dissolved organic carbon (DOC), PPHs and UV absorbance at 254 nm (UV-254) removals. This confirms that UV-254 could be used as a tertiary treatment performance indicator to monitor the process. This parameter allowed identifying that the removals of UV-254 and DOC reach a plateau from a μGAC retention time (SRT) of 90-100 days. The μGAC configuration substantially improves the overall quality of the WWTP discharges by reducing biological (38-45%) and chemical oxygen demands (21-48%), DOC (13-44%) and UV-254 (22-48%). In addition, total suspended solids (TSS) are retained by the μGAC bed and a biological activity (nitratation) leads to a total elimination of NO2(-). For micropollutants, PPHs have a good affinity for μGAC and high (>60%) or very high (>80%) removals are observed for most of the quantified compounds (n=22/32), i.e. atenolol (92-97%), carbamazepine (80-94%), ciprofloxacin (75-95%), diclofenac (71-97%), oxazepam (74-91%) or sulfamethoxazole (56-83%). In addition, alkylphenols, artificial sweeteners, benzotriazole, bisphenol A, personal care products (triclocarban and parabens) and pesticides have removals lying in the 50 ->90% range. Overall, the fluidized bed of μGAC allows obtaining performances comparable to PAC at the same activated carbon dose. Indeed, the average removal of the 13 PPHs found at a high occurrence (>75%) in WWTP discharges is similar at 20 g/m(3) of μGAC (78-89%) and PAC (85-93%). In addition, this recycled μGAC operation leads to several operational advantages (no FeCl3, reactivable, higher SRT, higher treated flow) and has a stronger impact on the overall wastewater quality compared to PAC.

Spatial distribution, temporal variation and risks of parabens and their chlorinated derivatives in urban surface water in Beijing, China

The occurrence and distribution of 13 target compounds, including eight parabens, four chlorinated parabens and p-hydroxybenzoic acid (PHBA), were detected in surface water samples at 35 sampling sites in the Beijing River system, China. The surface water samples were collected from the main rivers and lakes in the urban area monthly from July 2013 to June 2014 (except the frozen period). Laboratory analyses revealed that parabens were ubiquitous in the surface water of Beijing. PHBA was the predominant compound in the surface water samples, with the average concentration of 239ngL(-1), followed by the total amount of chlorinated parabens (average 50.1ng/L) and parabens (average 44.3ng/L). It is noteworthy that octylparaben with longer chain was firstly detected in the surface water. Significant difference was observed for paraben concentrations from different sampling sites, and the highest level of parabens was found in the Xiaotaihou River, which was mainly due to the untreated sewage discharge. Seasonal variation of target compounds in the urban surface water was also studied, and parabens exhibited a different temporal variation from chlorinated derivatives. A combination of factors including high residual chlorine level and water temperature as well as intense ultraviolet radiation might enhance the persistence of chlorinated parabens in chlorinated water during the wet season. Risk assessment showed that parabens and their chlorinated derivatives are not likely to produce biological effects on aquatic ecosystems at current levels in the surface water of Beijing.

Biocides in the Yangtze River of China: spatiotemporal distribution, mass load and risk assessment

Nineteen biocides were investigated in the Yangtze River to understand their spatiotemporal distribution, mass loads and ecological risks. Fourteen biocides were detected, with the highest concentrations up to 166 ng/L for DEET in surface water, and 54.3 ng/g dry weight (dw) for triclocarban in sediment. The dominant biocides were DEET and methylparaben, with their detection frequencies of 100% in both phases. An estimate of 152 t/y of 14 biocides was carried by the Yangtze River to the East China Sea. The distribution of biocides in the aquatic environments was significantly correlated to Gross Domestic Product (GDP), total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN), suggesting dominant input sources from domestic wastewater of the cities along the river. Risk assessment showed high ecological risks posed by carbendazim in both phases and by triclosan in sediment. Therefore, proper measures should be taken to reduce the input of biocides into the river systems.

Study of a large scale powdered activated carbon pilot: Removals of a wide range of emerging and priority micropollutants from wastewater treatment plant effluents

The efficacy of a fluidized powdered activated carbon (PAC) pilot (CarboPlus(®)) was studied in both nominal (total nitrification + post denitrification) and degraded (partial nitrification + no denitrification) configuration of the Seine Centre WWTP (Colombes, France). In addition to conventional wastewater parameters 54 pharmaceuticals and hormones (PhPHs) and 59 other emerging pollutants were monitored in influents and effluents of the pilot. Thus, the impacts of the WWTP configuration, the process operation and the physico-chemical properties of the studied compounds were assessed in this article. Among the 26 PhPHs quantified in nominal WWTP configuration influents, 8 have high dissolved concentrations (>100 ng/L), 11 have an intermediary concentration (10-100 ng/L) and 7 are quantified below 10 ng/L. Sulfamethoxazole is predominant (about 30% of the sum of the PhPHs). Overall, 6 PhPHs are poorly to moderately removed (<60%), such as ibuprofen, paracetamol or estrone, while 9 are very well removed (>80%), i.e. beta blockers, carbamazepine or trimethoprim, and 11 are well eliminated (60-80%), i.e. diclofenac, naproxen or sulfamethoxazole. In degraded WWTP configuration, higher levels of organic matter and higher concentrations of most pollutants are observed. Consequently, most PhPHs are substantially less removed in percentages but the removed flux is higher. Thus, the PAC dose required to achieve a given removal percentage is higher in degraded WWTP configuration. For the other micropollutants (34 quantified), artificial sweeteners and phthalates are found at particularly high concentrations in degraded WWTP configuration influents, up to μg/L range. Only pesticides, bisphenol A and parabens are largely eliminated (50-95%), while perfluorinated acids, PAHs, triclosan and sweeteners are not or weakly removed (<50%). The remaining compounds exhibit a very variable fate from campaign to campaign. The fresh PAC dose was identified as the most influencing operation parameter and is strongly correlated to performances. Charge and hydrophobicity of compounds have been recognized as crucial for the micropollutant adsorption on PAC, as well as the molecular weight. Finally, a PAC dose of 10 mg/L allows an average removal of 72-80% of the sum of the PhPHs in nominal WWTP configuration. The comparaison of the results with those from the scarce other studies tends to indicate that an extrapolation of them to different PAC processes and to other WWTPs could be possible and relevant, taking into account the differences of water quality from WWTP to WWTP.
