Occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, and ecological risks of steroids in a large shallow Chinese lake, Lake Taihu

Steroid hormones in surface water resources in China: systematic review and meta-analysis and probabilistic ecological risk assessment

A Search was conducted in international databases including Scopus, PubMed, Embase, and Web of Science from 10 January 2005 to 15 January 2023. The risk quotient (RQ) of Estrone (E1), 17β-E2 (E2), and Estriol (E3) on the surface water resources of China was calculated by Monte Carlo Simulation (MCS) technique. The rank order of steroid hormones based on pooled (weighted average) concentration in surface water was E3 (2.15 ng/l) > E2 (2.01 ng/l) > E1 (1.385 ng/l). The concentration of E1 in Dianchi lake (236.50.00 ng/l), 17β-E2 in Licun river (78.50 ng/l), and E3 in Dianchi lake (103.1 ng/l) were higher than in other surface water resources in China. RQ related to E1, 17β-E2 and E3 in 68.00%, 88.89% and 3.92% of surface water resources were high ecological risk, respectively. Therefore, carrying out source control plans for steroid hormones in surface water sources should be conducted continuously.

Occurrence, source apportionment and ecological risk of bisphenol analogues in river sediments in areas with different land use patterns

Bisphenol analogues (BPs) have gained increasing attention in recent years due to their ubiquitousness and potential endocrine disrupting properties in environments. However, little information is available on their spatiotemporal distribution, source apportionment and ecological risk in river sediments, especially the case in river basins with a high population density and those typical regions with agricultural-urban gradient, where land use patterns and intensity of human activity are varying. In this study, field investigations of BPs in the sediment of the entire Qinhuai River Basin, a typical agricultural-suburban agricultural-urban gradient area, were conducted before and after the flood period. Thirty-two sites were sampled for six types of BPs, resulted in no significant difference in the concentration of ΣBPs between the two periods, with ΣBPs ranging from 3.92 to 151 ng/g and 2.16-59.0 ng/g, respectively. Bisphenol A (BPA) was the main contributor. Whereas a multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) suggested that the composition structure of BPs had been influenced by water periods. The land use patterns had an impact on the distribution of ΣBPs in river sediments, which was more significant in after the flood period, with ΣBPs in urban rivers was 1.85 times, 3.44 times, and 3.08 times higher than the suburban rivers, agricultural rivers, and reservoirs, respectively. Yet land use types did not significantly alter the composition structure of BPs. The correlation analysis between BPs and the physicochemical properties of sediments showed a significant positive correlation between BPA and total organic carbon (TOC). The positive matrix factorization model (PMF) suggested that BPs in sediments of the basin might be influenced by industrial coatings, textiles, electronics and biopharmaceuticals, as well as urban wastewater or solid waste generated from daily life. The ecological risk assessment posed by BPA, based on the risk quotient, indicated that the ecological risk of BPA in sediments was low for three indicator benthic organisms: crustaceans, worms, and mollusks. However, the risk of BPA in river sediments varied among different land use patterns, with the risk ranking as follows: reservoirs < agricultural rivers < suburban rivers < urban rivers.

Assessment of occurrence, partitioning and ecological risk for 144 steroid hormones in Taihu Lake using UPLC-MS/MS with machine learning model

Steroid hormones (SHs) have attracted mounting attention due to their endocrine-disrupting effects on humans and aquatic organisms. However, the lack of analytical methods and toxicity data for a large number of SHs has limited the effective management of SH contamination in the water-sediment systems. In this study, we developed a highly sensitive analytical method for the simultaneous quantification of 144 SHs to investigate their occurrence, spatial distribution and partitioning in the water and sediment in Taihu Lake. The results showed that the total concentrations of SHs in water and sediment were 366.88-998.23 ng/L (mean: 612.84 ng/L) and 17.46-150.20 ng/g (mean: 63.41 ng/g), respectively. The spatial distribution of SHs in Taihu Lake might be simultaneously influenced by the pollution sources, lake hydrodynamics, and sediment properties. The sediment-water partitioning result implied that 28 SHs were in dynamic equilibrium at the water-water interface. In addition, 22 and 12 SHs tended to spread to water and settle into sediment, respectively. To assess the ecological risk of all SHs, a robust random forest model (R2 = 0.801) was developed to predict the acute toxicity of SHs for which toxicity data were not available from publications. Risk assessment showed that SHs posed a high ecological risk throughout Taihu Lake, with the highest risk in the northwestern areas. Estrone, 17β-estradiol and 17α-ethynylestradiol were the dominant risk contributors and were therefore recommended as the priority SHs in Taihu Lake. This work provided a valuable dataset for Taihu Lake, which would help to provide guidance and suggestions for future studies and be useful for the government to develop the mitigation and management measures.

Steroid metabolites as overlooked emerging contaminants: Insights from multimedia partitioning and source-sink simulation in an estuarine environment

Steroids have been attracting global attention given potential carcinogenic and endocrine-disrupting effects, yet the environmental status of steroids, especially their metabolites, in estuarine environment remain largely unexplored. This study investigated 31 steroids and metabolites in suspended particulate matter (SPM), water phase and sediments of the Pearl River Estuary (PRE) during the dry and wet seasons to elucidate their spatiotemporal patterning, partitioning behavior, and environmental fate. The results showed that natural steroids predominated in SPM and sediments while the metabolites predominated in water. The spatial distribution of steroids and metabolites varied seasonally, with hydrophobicity and environmental factors influencing phase partitioning in the estuary. Furthermore, a natural steroid, progesterone (P) could serve as a trustworthy chemical indicator to estimate the concentrations of steroids and metabolites in the PRE. Importantly, the mass budget of P was estimated using an improved multi-box mass balance model, revealing that outflow to the South China Sea was the primary sink of P in water (∼87%) and degradation was the primary sink of P in sediments (∼68%) of the PRE. Overall, this study offers insightful information about the distribution and environmental fate of steroids and metabolites in estuarine environment, with implications for future management strategies.

Occurrence, distribution, and environmental risk of 61 glucocorticoids in surface water of the Yellow River Delta, China

Glucocorticoids (GCs), as important endocrine disrupting compounds and emerging contaminants, could have irreversible adverse effects on aquatic organisms even at ng/L levels. However, previous studies have only focused on the dissolved concentrations of GCs in the water, and limited data are available for their occurrences in the solid phase. In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and environmental risks of 61 natural and synthetic GCs in surface water of the Yellow River Delta (YRD) were simultaneously analyzed by investigating water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediment samples at 64 sites in six major rivers in the wet season. Overall, 51 GCs were detected in all samples from different matrices, and their concentrations were in the range of not detected (ND)-274 ng/L in water, ND-42 ng/g dry weight (dw) in SPM and ND-9.98 ng/g dw in sediment. Natural GCs were the dominant compounds in all samples, followed by synthetic halogenated esters. High concentrations of GCs were observed in discharge outlet samples from livestock farming, aquaculture and industrial production, and the composition differences of GCs between human/animal sources and industrial sources could be used as indicators to identify pollution sources. Most GCs were distributed in the water phase, while compounds with higher log octanol/water partition coefficients (log Kow) tended to be adsorbed to SPM and sediment. The spatial distribution of GCs was primarily affected by anthropogenic activities and hydrodynamic conditions. Four synthetic compounds (budesonide [BD], fluocinolone acetonide [FOA], fluticasone propionate [FP], and clobetasol propionate [CBSP]) were identified as the main contributors to GC activity with a combined contribution of 57 %-95 %. Risk assessment using the risk quotient revealed that low to moderate risks are posed to aquatic organisms in surface water.

Water, Water Everywhere, but Every Drop Unique: Challenges in the Science to Understand the Role of Contaminants of Emerging Concern in the Management of Drinking Water Supplies

The protection and management of water resources continues to be challenged by multiple and ongoing factors such as shifts in demographic, social, economic, and public health requirements. Physical limitations placed on access to potable supplies include natural and human-caused factors such as aquifer depletion, aging infrastructure, saltwater intrusion, floods, and drought. These factors, although varying in magnitude, spatial extent, and timing, can exacerbate the potential for contaminants of concern (CECs) to be present in sources of drinking water, infrastructure, premise plumbing and associated tap water. This monograph examines how current and emerging scientific efforts and technologies increase our understanding of the range of CECs and drinking water issues facing current and future populations. It is not intended to be read in one sitting, but is instead a starting point for scientists wanting to learn more about the issues surrounding CECs. This text discusses the topical evolution CECs over time (Section 1), improvements in measuring chemical and microbial CECs, through both analysis of concentration and toxicity (Section 2) and modeling CEC exposure and fate (Section 3), forms of treatment effective at removing chemical and microbial CECs (Section 4), and potential for human health impacts from exposure to CECs (Section 5). The paper concludes with how changes to water quantity, both scarcity and surpluses, could affect water quality (Section 6). Taken together, these sections document the past 25 years of CEC research and the regulatory response to these contaminants, the current work to identify and monitor CECs and mitigate exposure, and the challenges facing the future.

Short-term exposure to dexamethasone at environmentally relevant concentrations impairs embryonic development in Cyprinus carpio: Bioconcentration and alteration of oxidative stress-related gene expression patterns

In recent years and as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, the consumption of dexamethasone (DXE) has increased. This favors that this corticosteroid is highly released in aquatic environments, generating deleterious effects in aquatic organisms. The information on the toxic effects of DXE in the environment is still limited. Thus, the objective of this work was to determine whether DXE at short-term exposure can cause alterations to embryonic development and alteration of oxidative stress-related gene expression patterns in Cyprinus carpio. For this purpose, common carp embryos (2 hpf) were exposed to realistic concentrations of DXE until 96 hpf. Alterations to embryonic development were evaluated at 12, 24, 48, 72 and 96 hpf. In addition, oxidative stress in carp embryos at 72 and 96 hpf was evaluated by cellular oxidation biomarkers (lipoperoxidation level, hydroperoxide and carbonyl protein content) and antioxidant enzymes activities (superoxide dismutase and catalase). Oxidative stress-related gene expression (sod, cat and gpx1) was also evaluated. Our results showed that DXE concentrations above 35 ng/L are capable of producing alterations to embryonic development in 50 % of the embryo population. Furthermore, DXE was able to induce alterations such as scoliosis, hypopigmentation, craniofacial malformations, pericardial edema and growth retardation, leading to the death of half of the population at 50 ng/L of DXE. Concerning oxidative stress, the results demonstrated that DXE induce oxidative damage on the embryos of C. carpio. In conclusion, DXE is capable of altering embryonic development and generating oxidative stress in common carp C. carpio.

Prevalence, distribution, accumulation, and risk of environmental corticosteroids and estrogens in biofilms from the Pearl River Delta

Biofilms play a significant role in the biogeochemical processing of organic matter and the environmental fate of emerging pollutants. In this study, we investigated the occurrence and distribution of 32 endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs), including 24 environmental corticosteroids (ECs) and 8 environmental estrogens (EEs), in natural biofilms from the Pearl River system. Their association between biofilms and water and environmental risk were assessed. The ECs and EEs ubiquitously occurred in the biofilms, ranging from <0.61-6.57 ng/g and <0.8-2535 ng/g, respectively. Temporally, there was no obvious variance in either ECs or EEs in the biofilms during the winter and summer, and their concentrations exhibited a spatial trend of upward to midstream, descending downstream, and then seaward attenuation at the estuary. For ECs and EEs, the similar levels of field-derived bioconcentration factors (BCFs) (logarithm values: 2.42-2.86 and 2.72-2.98, respectively) and biofilm organic carbon-normalized partitioning coefficients (Kboc) (3.39-3.69 and 3.35-3.95) suggest the comparable potential of accumulation and sorption by biofilms between these two classes of EDCs. In addition, higher values of BCF and Kboc for the EEs were found in winter and were correspondingly comparable to their distribution coefficients (Kd) and Koc derived from suspended particles and sediment, revealing that biofilms are a competitive environmental compartment for capturing EDCs, particularly during the mature period. A positive logKboc-logKow relationship suggests hydrophobic partitioning as a primary interaction mechanism between the biofilm and EEs. Moreover, high risks from biofilm-associated ECs and EEs might have posed to the fluvial ecosystem. This study provides original insights into the occurrence, fate, and risk of ECs in natural biofilms for the first time and demonstrates that biofilms may not only serve as reservoirs but also serve as sentinels for fluvial EDC contamination. These results contribute to the further understanding of the behavior and fate of EDCs in aquatic environments.

An effective tool for tracking steroids and their metabolites at the watershed level: Combining fugacity modeling and a chemical indicator

Steroids have attracted concern worldwide because of their potential carcinogenicity and severe adverse effects on aquatic organisms. However, the contamination status of various steroids, particularly their metabolites, at the watershed level remains unknown. This was the first study to employ field investigations to elucidate the spatiotemporal patterns, riverine fluxes, and mass inventories, and conduct a risk assessment of 22 steroids and their metabolites. This study also developed an effective tool for predicting the target steroids and their metabolites in a typical watershed based on the fugacity model combined with a chemical indicator. Thirteen steroids in the river water and seven steroids in sediments were identified with total concentrations of 1.0-76 ng/L and <LOQ-121 ng/g, respectively. In water, the levels of steroids were higher in the dry season, but the opposite trend was observed in sediments. Approximately 89 kg/a flux of steroids were transported from the river to the estuary. Mass inventories indicated that sediments acted as crucial sinks for steroids. Steroids in rivers might pose low to medium risks to aquatic organisms. Importantly, the fugacity model combined with a chemical indicator effectively simulated the steroid monitoring results within an order of magnitude at the watershed level, and various key sensitivity parameter settings provided reliable steroid concentration predictions under different circumstances. Our results should benefit environmental management and pollution control of steroids and their metabolites at the watershed level.

Transport model simulation prediction and environmental risk assessment of pyrethroid insecticides in urban artificial lakes caused by rainfall: A case study of Cloud Mountain Park in subhumid climate zone

Pyrethroid insecticides are among urban parks' most widely used and harmful insecticides. The advanced prediction method is the key to studying the pollution and diffusion risk of plant conservation insecticides in parks. A two-dimensional advection-dispersion model was established for the North Lake of Cloud Mountain Park in the subhumid area of Hebei Province. The temporal and spatial distribution of lambda-cyhalothrin pollution required by plant growth in artificial lakes under different rainfall intensities and the time of water renewal after rainfall was simulated and predicted. According to the model efficiency (E: 0.98), mean absolute error (MAE: 0.016-0.064 cm), and root mean square error (RMSE: 0.014-0.041 cm), the prediction results showed that the model fits well. The results showed that the concentration of lambda-cyhalothrin in the artificial lake was positively correlated with the increase in rainfall intensity. Under the three scenarios of moderate rain, heavy rain, and rainstorm, the variation of total pollutants into the lake over time conformed to the first-order dynamic equation (R²＞0.97), and the cumulative rates were 0.013 min^-1, 0.019 min^-1 and 0.022 min^-1, respectively. Under light rain, the accumulation rate of lambda-cyhalothrin showed a double-linear relationship, which was in accordance with the second-order kinetic equation (R²＞0.97). The rapid accumulation rate of early-stage rainfall was 0.0024 min^-1, and the slow accumulation rate of late-stage rainfall was 0.0019 min^-1. The human health risk assessment predicted by the simulation was lower than the hazard value (R_tgⁿ(a-1): 9.65 E^-11-1.12 E^-10 a-1). However, the potential risk value to aquatic species was higher (RQ: 0.33-23.05). In addition, the increase in rainfall intensity has no significant effect on the acceleration of water renewal time. The two-dimensional dispersion model of pollutants driven by water dynamics provided relevant examples for evaluating the impact of runoff on pesticide scour in parks and supplied scientific support for improving the management of artificial lakes in urban parks.

Free and conjugated forms of metabolites are indispensable components of steroids: The first evidence from an estuarine food web

Steroids have attracted particular attention as environmental contaminants because of their severe endocrine-disrupting effects. Previous studies have predominantly focused on parent steroids; however, the levels and proportions of the free and conjugated forms of their metabolites remain largely unclear, especially in food webs. Here, we first characterized the free and conjugated forms of parent steroids and their metabolites in 26 species in an estuarine food web. The steroids were dominated by their metabolites in water samples, whereas parent compounds were predominant in sediment samples. The total mean steroid concentrations in the biota samples that underwent non-enzymatic hydrolysis decreased in the following order: crabs (27 ng/g) > fish (5.9 ng/g) > snails (3.4 ng/g) > shrimps and sea cucumbers (1.2 ng/g); and those in the biota samples that underwent enzymatic hydrolysis decreased in the following order: crabs (57 ng/g) > snails (9.2 ng/g) > fish (7.9 ng/g) > shrimps and sea cucumbers (3.5 ng/g). The proportion of metabolites in the enzymatic hydrolysis biota samples was higher (38-79%) than that (2.9-65%) in non-enzymatic ones, indicating that the free and conjugated forms of metabolites in aquatic organisms were not negligible. Most synthetic steroids were either bioaccumulative or highly bioaccumulative. Importantly, in the invertebrate food web, 17α-methyltestosterone was biomagnified, while 17β-boldenone underwent trophic dilution. Although the estuarine water had a median ecological risk level, the health risks via aquatic product consumption were very low. This study provides novel insights into the composition and trophic transfer of steroids in an estuarine food web for the first time and highlights that free and conjugated metabolites should receive more attention, particularly in biota samples.

Contaminant occurrence, spatiotemporal variation, and ecological risk of organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in Hangzhou Bay and east China sea ecosystem

Occurrence, spatiotemporal variation, sources, and ecological risks of 20 organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs) in water and sediments from Hangzhou Bay (HZB) and its adjacent East China Sea (ECS) were investigated in this study. The concentrations of OPFRs (∑OPFR) in water ranged from 0.51 ng/L to 885 ng/L, with chlorinated OPFRs having the highest value. For sediments, ∑OPFR ranged from 2.93 ng/g, dry weight (dw) to 37.8 ng/g, dw. The ∑OPFR in the water and sediments of HZB in summer was significantly (p < 0.05) higher than that in autumn. Additionally, the pollution of OPFRs in HZB was higher than that in ECS, and the high-concentration areas appeared in the north and south banks of HZB and near the coast of ECS. Principal component analysis-multiple linear regression showed that the OPFRs in this region were mainly from industrial products (e.g., polyurethane foam/paint/coating/textiles/product processing). In terms of aquatic environments, ecological risks were in a low (∑RQs<0.1) to moderate (0.1<∑RQs<1) level, with regard to median exposure levels, a moderate risk (0.1<∑RQs<1) was found in the sediments during autumn. This study can provide new insights into the OPFR pollution characteristic and ecological risk in a specific eco-environment.

Sexual hormones in a coastal river adjacent to the Bohai Sea: Characteristic pollutants and dominantly influencing factors

Characteristic sexual hormones (SHs) and the factors that dominantly influence their occurrence in coastal ecosystems are less understood. This study verified the relationships between SHs and environmental factors and further inferred the possible controlling mechanisms of SH distribution. A characteristic pollutant of SHs was first proposed by determining the contamination level and ecological risks of SHs (seven species) in a coastal river adjacent to the Bohai Sea. The results showed that the 17β-oestradiol (17β-E2), estriol (E3), and 17α-ethynylestradiol (EE2) had high mean concentrations of 11.20 (±1.31), 10.17 (±4.91), and 16.71 (±0.88) ng L^-1, respectively, in the river water. The concentration of estrone (E1) was positively related to microbial substances of DOMs (p < 0.05). The humification index (HIX) had a negative relationship with E3 (p < 0.05). In water, the distribution of total SHs was regulated by the HIX and fluorescence index (FI), which might be related to photodegradation reactions. The 17α-oestradiol (17α-E2) and EE2 were related to humified organic matter, while E3 and androstenedione (ADD) were influenced by sewage input. The 17β-E2, E1, and 17α-E2 may be derived from animal sources, while E3, ADD, EE2, and progesterone were from human activities. Oestrogens, including E1, 17α-E2, 17β-E2, and EE2, displayed higher ecological risks than androgens and progesterone, with medium to high risk in most sites. The 17β-E2 was regarded as a characteristic pollutant of SHs throughout the river system, which displayed the highest risk. This paper may provide a reference for SH risk management and control.

Occurrence, distribution and risk assessment of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in water sources from Northeast to Southeast China

With the wide utilization of organophosphate esters (OPEs) in recent years, OPEs have been detected more frequently in the aquatic environment. However, the distribution of OPEs in drinking source water has rarely been investigated across a large region. In this study, the occurrence and distribution of 13 OPEs were investigated in 23 source water sites from Northeast to Southeast (spacing greater than 3320 km) with a direct injection ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method. Total OPEs ranged from 218.8 to 636.6 ng/L, with a mean of 380.8 ng/L. The average detected concentration of OPEs in southern cities was higher than that in northern cities. Chlorinated OPEs accounted for 64.74% of the total concentration. Triethyl phosphate (TEP), tri (2-chloroethyl) phosphate (TCEP), and tri (chloropropyl) phosphate (TCPP) were detected in all water samples. Rainfall is a significant factor that affects the OPE concentration (less rainfall, higher concentration). China's OPE concentrations have rapidly reached a median level when compared to those of other countries. Ecological risk assessment showed that most OPEs have no or low risk to organisms (fish, crustacea, algae), except tricresyl phosphate (TCP), which is medium risk. The risk of OPEs in less-rain regions needs to be of greater concern, especially TCP.

Biodegradation and Metabolic Pathway of 17β-Estradiol by Rhodococcus sp. ED55

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in the environment are considered a motif of concern, due to the widespread occurrence and potential adverse ecological and human health effects. The natural estrogen, 17β-estradiol (E2), is frequently detected in receiving water bodies after not being efficiently removed in conventional wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), promoting a negative impact for both the aquatic ecosystem and human health. In this study, the biodegradation of E2 by Rhodococcus sp. ED55, a bacterial strain isolated from sediments of a discharge point of WWTP in Coloane, Macau, was investigated. Rhodococcus sp. ED55 was able to completely degrade 5 mg/L of E2 in 4 h in a synthetic medium. A similar degradation pattern was observed when the bacterial strain was used in wastewater collected from a WWTP, where a significant improvement in the degradation of the compound occurred. The detection and identification of 17 metabolites was achieved by means of UPLC/ESI/HRMS, which proposed a degradation pathway of E2. The acute test with luminescent marine bacterium Aliivibrio fischeri revealed the elimination of the toxicity of the treated effluent and the standardized yeast estrogenic (S-YES) assay with the recombinant strain of Saccharomyces cerevisiae revealed a decrease in the estrogenic activity of wastewater samples after biodegradation.

Microbial processing of autochthonous organic matter controls the biodegradation of 17α-ethinylestradiol in lake sediments under anoxic conditions

The decay of algal biomass and aquatic plants in freshwater lakes leads to the overproduction of autochthonous organic matter (OM) and the exhaustion of dissolved oxygen, impacting the microbial community and subsequent biodegradation of emerging contaminants in sediment. This study explored how the microbial processing of aquatic plant- and algal-derived OM (POM and AOM) mediates 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) biodegradation in the anoxic sediments of Lake Taihu in China. In four months of microcosm incubations, the increased concentrations of protein-like substances in AOM and POM exhibited temporary activation on microbial metabolic enzyme activity (fluorescein diacetate hydrolase and dehydrogenase) and significantly promoted the carbon mineralization with iron reduction (P < 0.001). These in turn increased the EE2 biodegradation efficiency to 77-90 ng g^-1 in the anoxic sediment. However, a higher EE2 biodegradation of 109 ng g^-1 was achieved with the humic acid augmentation containing more quinone-like compounds, showing a weaker substrate-priming effect but accelerated redox cycling of iron and organic substrates in the later period of incubation. The microbial analysis further revealed that the quinone-like compounds in OM were more closely associated with microbial electron transfer and strengthened their interspecies syntrophic cooperation favorable to contaminant biodegradation, even though the connective members exposed to protein-like components upregulated more functional genes related to organic carbon and xenobiotics metabolism and biodegradation. Our findings will help predict the fate of estrogens in various sedimentary environments under increasing eutrophication and further climate change scenarios.

Contamination and ecological risks of steroid metabolites require more attention in the environment: Evidence from the fishing ports

Due to strong endocrine disrupting effects, steroids in the environment have attracted substantial attention, with studies mostly focusing on the parent steroids. Here, we conducted the first investigation on the contamination profiles, possible sources, mass inventories, and ecological risks of 27 steroids and their metabolites in 15 typical fishing ports in Southeast China. Twelve steroids were detectable in the sediment samples with the total mean concentrations of 4.6-35 ng/g. High proportions of steroid metabolites were measured in the sediments and five metabolites were newly observed. Untreated municipal sewage and aquaculture wastes constitute the possible steroid sources in the studied fishing ports. The total inventories of steroids in fishing ports ranged from 2.1-16 mg/m², with their metabolites being important contributors. The ecological risk analysis indicated high risks across all sampling sites mainly due to the contributions of parent steroids. Furthermore, our results found that progesterone is an acceptable chemical indicator for various steroids in sediments. This study provides the first evidence of steroid metabolites in the marine environment, calling for more studies in environmental behavior and ecotoxicology of steroid metabolites.

[Simultaneous determination of 24 corticosteroids in sediments based on ultrasonic extraction, solid-phase extraction, liquid chromatography, and tandem mass spectrometry]

Corticosteroids (CSs) are widely used to treat various inflammatory and immune diseases in humans and animals, such as arthritis and lupus. Thus far, CSs have been frequently detected in diverse pollution sources, such as in the influent and effluent of traditional wastewater treatment plants, livestock farms, and aquaculture. Owing to incomplete removal or limited treatment, CSs can enter the water environment and eventually be adsorbed in the sediment. Due to hydrodynamic effects, CSs can re-enter the surface water through the resuspension of sediments, and pose a hazard to the ecosystem and human health via the enrichment of aquatic organisms and transmission through the food chain. Therefore, trace analysis of CSs in sediments is significant for exploring their prevalence and behavior in multiple environments. However, existing research mainly focuses on the determination of glucocorticoids in water samples, and studies on the systematic quantitative analysis of CSs in environmental solid samples with more complex matrices are scarce. Moreover, majority of previous investigations focused on a limited number of glucocorticoids, making it important to widen the range of target compounds to be studied, including mineralocorticoids. In this study, the main factors which could influence the accuracy and sensitivity in the determination of 24 target CSs were systematically optimized in the sample pretreatment and instrument analysis. A novel method based on ultrasonic extraction coupled with solid phase extraction (SPE) for sample pretreatment was developed for the simultaneous determination of the 24 CSs in sediments using ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS). The sediment sample was ground to homogenize the particle sizes after freeze-drying. The analytes from 2.0 g of the sample were ultrasonicated and extracted with methanol-acetone (1∶1, v/v). After concentrating and diluting each extract, SPE was performed. The water sample was extracted and purified using hydrophile-lipophile balance (HLB) cartridges, following which the extract was further purified with LC-NH2 cartridges. The extracts were concentrated using a rotary evaporator, dried under a gentle stream of nitrogen, and re-dissolved in methanol for instrumental analysis. Chromatographic separation was conducted on an Agilent ZORBAX Eclipse Plus C8 column (100 mm×2.1 mm, 1.8 μm), with a column flow rate of 0.3 mL/min and a gradient of mobile phases A (water with 0.1% acetic acid) and B (acetonitrile). The column temperature was set to 30 ℃ and the injection volume was fixed at 5 μL. Electrospray ionization MS in the dynamic multiple reaction monitoring (DMRM) and selected ion monitoring (SIM) modes were performed in the positive mode for the qualitative and quantitative analysis of the target compounds. Quantitation of the target compounds was carried out using the internal standard method. The effects of different extraction solvents, purification conditions, and MS conditions on the recoveries of the target compounds were investigated. The limits of detection (LODs) (S/N≥3) and limits of quantification (LOQs) (S/N≥10) of all 24 compounds were in the ranges of 0.14-1.25 μg/kg and 0.26-2.26 μg/kg, respectively. The correlation coefficients of linear calibration curves were higher than 0.995 in the range of 1.0-100 μg/L. The recoveries of the 24 CSs at 5, 20, and 50 μg/kg spiked levels ranged from 64.9% to 125.1% with relative standard deviations of 0.4%-12.6% (n=5). The developed method was applied to analyze the CSs in three sediment samples from the rivers of the Pearl River Delta. In all, 11 target compounds were detected in these samples, with contents in the range of 1.25-29.38 μg/kg. The characteristic of this method is efficient, sensitive, reliable, and suitable for the trace determination of varieties of natural and synthesized CSs in environmental sediments.

Responses of steroid estrogen biodegradation to cyanobacterial organic matter biodegradability in the water column of a eutrophic lake

The co-occurrence of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms and contaminants is an increasing environmental concern in freshwater worldwide. Our field investigations coupled with laboratory incubations demonstrated that the microbial degradation potential of 17β-estradiol (E2) with estrone as the intermediate was primarily driven by increased dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the water column of a cyanobacterial bloom. To explain the intrinsic contribution of cyanobacterial-derived DOM (C-DOM) to estrogen biodegradation, a combination of methods including bioassay, ultrahigh-resolution mass spectrometry, and microbial ecology were applied. The results showed that preferential assimilation of highly biodegradable structures, including protein-, carbohydrate-, and unsaturated hydrocarbon-like molecules sustained bacterial growth, selected for more diverse microbes, and resulted in greater estrogen biodegradation compared to less biodegradable molecules (lignin- and tannin-like molecules). The biodegradability of C-DOM decreased from 78% to 1%, whereas the E2 biodegradation rate decreased dramatically at first, then increased with the accumulation of recalcitrant, bio-produced lipid-like molecules in C-DOM. This change was linked to alternative substrate-induced selection of the bacterial community under highly refractory conditions, as suggested by the greater biomass-normalized E2 biodegradation rate after a 24-h lag phase. In addition to the increased frequency of potential degraders, such as Sphingobacterium, the network analysis revealed that C-DOM molecules distributed in high H/C (protein- and lipid-like molecules) were the main drivers structuring the bacterial community, inducing strong deterministic selection of the community assemblage and upregulating the metabolic capacity for contaminants. These findings provide strong evidence that estrogen biodegradation in eutrophic water may be facilitated by cyanobacterial blooms and provide a theoretical basis for ecological remediation of estrogen pollution.

The endocrine disruptor 17β-trenbolone alters the relationship between pre- and post-copulatory sexual traits in male mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki)

It is now well-established that reproduction in wildlife can be disrupted by anthropogenic environmental changes, such as chemical pollution. However, very little is known about how these pollutants might affect the interplay between pre- and post-copulatory mechanisms of sexual selection. Here, we investigated the impacts of 21-day exposure of male eastern mosquitofish (Gambusia holbrooki) to a field-realistic level (average measured concentration: 11 ng/L) of the endocrine-disrupting chemical 17β-trenbolone (17β-TB) on pre- and post-copulatory reproductive traits. We examined male reproductive behaviour by testing the time spent near a female behind a partition, as well as the number of copulation attempts made, and the time spent chasing a female in a free-swimming context. Sperm traits were also assayed for all males. We found that exposure of male fish to 17β-TB altered the relationship between key pre- and post-copulatory reproductive traits. Furthermore, 17β-TB-exposed males had, on average, a higher percentage of motile sperm, and performed fewer copulation attempts than unexposed males. However, there was no overall effect of 17β-TB exposure on either the time males spent associating with or chasing females. Taken together, our findings demonstrate the potential for chemical pollutants to affect both pre- and post-copulatory sexual traits, and the interplay between these mechanisms of sexual selection in contaminated wildlife.

Bacterial contribution to 17β-estradiol mineralization in lake sediment as revealed by 13C-DNA stable isotope probing

The accumulation of estrogens in aquatic environments has drawn increasing public concern due to their adverse effects on aquatic ecosystems and human health. Bacteria play important roles in eliminating estrogens from the environment, but knowledge of the identity and functions of the microorganisms involved in metabolizing these steroid hormones in the natural microbial communities is lacking. Here, we added ¹³C-17β-estradiol (¹³C-E2) to sediments collected from Zhushan (ZS) Bay, Meiliang (ML) Bay, Gonghu (GH) Bay, and the central area (CA) of the Taihu Lake. The indigenous assimilators of E2 in the sediments were recognized using ¹³C-DNA stable isotope probing (DNA-SIP), and their effects on ¹³C-E2 mineralization were studied under aerobic condition. During the 30-day incubation period, ZS Bay had the highest cumulative percentage of ¹³C-E2 mineralization to ¹³CO₂ (65.5%), while CA presented the lowest (51.4%). Based on DNA-SIP, we saw that Novosphingobium, Ralstonia, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Nitrosomonas, and Alcaligenes were involved in E2-derived ¹³C assimilation for the entire incubation period. Acinetobacter, Flavobacterium, and Mycobacterium only assimilated ¹³C for the first half of the incubation. H16 was identified as an E2 assimilator for the first time in this study. In addition, the temporal changes in assimilator abundances during the incubation period indicated that these genera played dominant roles at different stages in the process of E2 biodegradation. The bacteria engaged in the assimilation of E2 in situ were identified, and the rate of increase in the relative abundance of assimilators was significantly (P < 0.05) and positively correlated with the E2 mineralization in sediments. This information enhances our knowledge of in situ E2 biodegradation and provides a potential resource that could be used to eliminate estrogens in sediments.

A critical review on the distribution and ecological risk assessment of steroid hormones in the environment in China

During past two decades, steroid hormones have raised significant public concerns due to their potential adverse effects on the hormonal functions of aquatic organisms and humans. Considering China being a big producer and consumer of steroid hormones, we summarize the current contamination status of steroid hormones in different environmental compartments in China, and preliminarily assess the associated risks to ecological systems. The results show that steroid hormones are ubiquitously present in Chinese surface waters where estrogens are the most studied steroids compared with androgens, progestogens and glucocorticoids. Estrone (E1), 17β-estradiol (17β-E2) and estriol (E3) are generally the dominant steroid estrogens in Chinese surface waters, whereas for the other steroids, androsterone (ADR), epi-androsterone (EADR), progesterone (PGT), cortisol (CRL) and cortisone (CRN) have relatively large contributions. Meanwhile, the investigations for the other environmental media such as particles, sediments, soils and groundwater have been limited, as well as for steroid conjugates and metabolites. The median risk quotients of most steroid hormones in surface waters and sediments are lower than 1, indicating low to moderate risks to local organisms. This review provides a full picture of steroid distribution and ecological risks in China, which may be useful for future monitoring and risk assessment. More studies may focus on the analysis of steroid conjugates, metabolites, solid phase fractions, analytical method development and acute/chronic toxicities in different matrices to pursue a more precise and holistic risk assessment.

A review on the occurrence of organophosphate flame retardants in the aquatic environment in China and implications for risk assessment

Organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs), used extensively as substitutes for polybrominated diphenyl ethers, are ubiquitous environmental contaminants. OPFR pollution in aquatic environments, the main sink of pollutants, has been studied extensively over the past decade. Here, we review the current knowledge on the consumption and applications of OPFRs, and on their ecotoxicity in aquatic environments worldwide. We also synthesize the available evidence on the occurrence of OPFRs in aquatic environments in China (wastewater treatment plant influent and effluent, surface water, sediment, aquatic biota, and drinking water). Across China, the measured concentrations of OPFRs differ by more than three orders of magnitude. Risk assessments based on these measurements indicate a low level of ecological risk from OPFRs in most aquatic environments in China, and a low risk to human health from drinking water and aquatic products. Finally, we identify gaps in the current knowledge and directions for further research on OPFRs in aquatic environments.

Occurrence, Distribution, and Ecological Risk Assessment of Antibiotics in Different Environmental Media in Anqing, Anhui Province, China

The widespread usage of antibiotics in human and animal medication has brought global concerns over environmental contamination of antibiotic residues. In this study, 16 kinds of antibiotics in different environmental media of water, sediments, and soils in Anqing city, Anhui province were determined by ultra-performance liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry. A total of fourteen kinds of antibiotics were detected in surface water, with a total concentration up to 479 ng·L⁻¹, while six kinds of antibiotics were detected in sediment and soil with concentrations ranging from 15.1 to 108 μg·kg⁻¹. Ciprofloxacin (12.8–99.5 ng·L⁻¹) and tetracycline (17.2–225 μg·kg⁻¹) antibiotics exhibited the highest concentration in water and soil, respectively. In spatial distribution, the total concentration of antibiotics in surface water from the highest to the lowest followed the order of urban area, mainstream of Wan River, suburbs, tributaries of Wan River, indicating that the level of antibiotic concentration in surface water is positively associated with the frequency of human activities. In addition, the antibiotic mass fraction in agriculture land and fishpond were found higher than that in other sampling sites. Moreover, the environmental risk assessment results showed that ciprofloxacin, erythromycin, ofloxacin, enrofloxacin and tetracycline might pose medium to high risks to algae and bacteria in aquatic ecosystem.

Seasonal distribution and ecological risks of phthalic acid esters in surface water of Taihu Lake, China

Phthalic acid esters (PAEs) are endocrine-disrupting compounds that are ubiquitous in surface water. However, early studies on PAEs only focused on six species on the priority contaminant list, and the seasonal variation in the PAE distribution in Taihu Lake, China is unclear. The present study investigated the occurrence, spatial distribution, and ecological risks of 16 PAEs in Taihu Lake during the dry, normal, and wet seasons. The results showed that dibutyl phthalate, diethylhexyl phthalate (DEHP), and diisobutyl phthalate (DIBP) were the major species detected in the surface water of Taihu Lake. The summed concentration of the six priority PAEs accounted for less than 50% of the total, indicating that the contamination of the other PAE congeners was non-negligible. Significant seasonal effects were observed that the total PAE concentration was higher in the wet season than in the dry season, and there were significant positive correlations between the total PAE concentration and rainfall, the water reserve, and the water level. In the dry season, a relatively high PAE level was detected in the area close to the inflow river estuary and the tourist island in the lake. The concentrations of PAEs in the lakeshore area were higher than those in the lake center in the normal season, and were generally high in the wet season. DEHP posed high risks for fish regardless of the season, while butyl benzyl phthalate, DIBP, dihexyl phthalate, and diphenyl phthalate also showed high risks in the normal and wet seasons. These results suggest that the contamination and risks of congeners other than the priority PAEs are also of necessary concern, and seasonal variation should be considered for a comprehensive understanding of PAE contamination in surface water.

Determination of estrogens and estrogen mimics by solid-phase extraction with liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry

An analytical method has been developed and validated for the determination of six estrogens and estrogen mimics, namely estriol (E3), bisphenol A (BPA), 17β-estradiol (E2), estrone (E1), ethynyl estradiol (EE2) and dienestrol (DIE), with frequent occurrence in the natural environment. Solid phase extraction coupled with liquid chromatography tandem mass spectrometry (SPE-LC-MS/MS) using electrospray ionization (ESI) in a negative mode was applied to concentration, identification, and quantification of estrogens and estrogen mimics. The SPE conditions were optimized as the selection of C18 as cartridges and MeOH as an eluent, and the control of solution pH at 9.0. The method was validated by satisfactory recoveries (80-130%) and intra-day and inter-day precision (<18.4%, as relative standard deviation), and excellent linearity for calibration curves (R² > 0.996). The limits of detection (LODs) for six target estrogenic compounds ranged between 2.5 and 19.2 ng/L. The effects of matrix background on the determination were evaluated in terms of LODs, LOQs, analyte recovery, and slopes of calibration curves in five different water matrices. Matrix effects by tap water were negligible. However, both matrix suppression and enhancement (i.e., E3, E1, DIE) were observed in surface water and wastewater. The positive correlation between LODs and TOC in various water matrices indicated the negative effect of organic pollutants on the method sensitivity. The sum of target estrogenic compounds in environmental samples were within 17-9462 ng/L.

Environmental Risk Assessment Resulting from Sediment Contamination with Perfluoroalkyl Substances

Due to wide use of perfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) (e.g., in metal-plating, in fire-fighting foam, lubricants) and their resistance to degradation, they occur widely in the environment. The aim of this study was to estimate the environmental risk resulting from the presence of PFASs in the Gulf of Gdansk. Therefore, 17 PFASs concentrations were determined using ultra performance liquid chromatography with tandem mass spectrometry detection (UPLC-MS/MS). Additionally, sediment ecotoxicity was investigated. The results of the chemical analysis were used to asses environmental risk of PFASs. In samples collected around discharge collectors from a wastewater treatment plant and the Vistula mouth, Σ17PFASs values were 0.00403 ÷ 40.6 and 0.509 ÷ 614 ng/g d.w., respectively. In samples collected around discharge collectors, PFHxA, PFPeA, PFHpA, and PFOA were dominating, while at the Vistula River mouth, PFHxS, PFDS, and PFBS were prevalent. For most sediments, no toxic effect was observed in the toxicity tests with Heterocypris inconguens and Aliivibrio ficsheri. There was no observed correlation between the PFASs level and their ecotoxicity. Generally, the results of environmental risk assessment indicate that the PFASs would not generate high impact on the aquatic life (five water samples have shown medium risk related to PFBS and PFDoA).

Impact of rainfall on the occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, and partition trend of micropollutants in Taihu Lake, China: Bisphenol A and 4-nonylphenol as examples

Very limited studies have evaluated the impact of rainfall on the fate of endocrine-disrupting micropollutants in lacustrine systems. This yearlong study investigated monthly fluctuation of bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-nonylphenol (NP) concentrations in both water and sediment samples from Taihu Lake and evaluated the impact of rainfall on their spatiotemporal distribution and partition trends. Results showed that BPA concentration in water was negatively correlated to rainfall while NP concentrations in both phases were positively related to rainfall. The spatial distribution of NP in the lake water was season specific with the lakeshore area higher than the central area during the wet season and a reversed pattern during the dry season. The spatial distributions of sediment-associated NP and BPA in both phases were not significantly different among seasons. Contrary partition tendencies were observed for BPA and NP that BPA tended to desorb from sediment and NP tended to be adsorbed during the wet season while the trends were reversed during the dry season. This study suggests that rainfall could affect the occurrence, distribution and environmental fate of micropollutants and should be considered in the monitoring program and risk assessment.

Occurrence and distribution of hormones and bisphenol A in Laguna Lake, Philippines

The occurrence of hormones and hormone-like compounds in water has been regarded as an emerging environmental concern. These water contaminants are known to cause endocrine disruption that may affect aquatic organisms. In this study, hormones and phenolic xenoestrogens were investigated and measured in the surface waters of Laguna Lake, Philippines. Laguna Lake is the largest lake in the country that has many uses including fish cultivation and source for potable water production. The hormones estrone, 17-beta-estradiol, 17-alpha-ethynylestradiol, progesterone and testosterone as well as the plasticizer bisphenol A in the lake water were determined by solid phase extraction and LC-MS/MS. The extraction method exhibited good recoveries (75-90% in spiked lake water) while the instrumental method of analysis has low detection limits (0.01-0.24 μg/L) and good linear response (>99% in the 0-50 μg/L concentration range). In the nine sampling sites across the lake, estrone was found in concentrations between 0.03 and 0.30 ng/L. 17-Beta-estradiol, testosterone and progesterone were detected in some of the sites in concentrations up to 0.36, 0.22, and 2.05 ng/L, respectively. Bisphenol A was detected in all sites in higher concentrations of 0.71-47.40 ng/L. Although there are no local guidelines yet, the determination and monitoring of these emerging water contaminants are important because of their potential environmental impacts. Further to this initial study, investigations on point sources spanning the tributary rivers, long-term determination of locational and temporal variations, and assessment of ecotoxicological risks are needed. These are crucial in the regulation and mitigation of discharges into the lake.

Priming effect of autochthonous organic matter on enhanced degradation of 17α-ethynylestradiol in water-sediment system of one eutrophic lake

Climate change and increasing eutrophication are expected to increase the release of autochthonous organic matter (OM) to sediments, where most contaminants are transformed or mineralized in freshwater lakes. This study sought to evaluate how cyanobacteria- and macrophyte-derived OM (COM and MOM) affected the microbial attenuation of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) in the sediment from eutrophic Lake Taihu in China. In two months of water-sediment microcosm experiments, the input of COM and MOM both promoted EE2 degradation more strongly than humic acids, and the degradation efficiency was significantly and positively correlated with the cometabolism of increasing organic carbon in sediments (P < 0.001). The enhanced degradation was explained by responses of indigenous bacterial community to OM amendment as a priming effect. The immediate breakdown of biodegradable components such as proteinaceous substances in COM and MOM remarkably augmented the metabolic activity of bacteria in terms of the stimulated activity of extracellular enzymes including fluorescein diacetate and dehydrogenase, as well as the elevated production of proteins and polysaccharides in extracellular polymeric substances. In the meantime, the bacterial community composition was reshaped toward a more eutrophic state, leading to the clear upregulation of metabolic function genes of organic carbon and xenobiotics. Correlation-based network analysis further determined the strong facilitative coordination between the community members and the compositional variability of OM in the cometabolism. These results suggest that cyanobacterial blooms-dominated zones are potential hotspot areas for steroid estrogen attenuation, a finding of significance for the control and management of complex pollution in freshwater lakes.

Endocrine disrupting compounds in the middle and lower reaches of the Lhasa River Basin: Occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment

The contamination of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) in frigid alpine areas is poorly understood compared with that in industrialized regions. In this study, the occurrence, distribution, and risk assessment of EDCs were investigated in the middle and lower reaches of the Lhasa River Basin in the Tibetan Plateau. Eight EDCs were analyzed in samples of surface water, sediment, natural soils, and farmland soils during the dry season and rainy season. Bisphenol A (BPA) and estriol were the most frequently detected compounds. The EDCs concentrations in the sediment and surface water varied with the rainy and dry seasons. The BPA concentration in the surface water of the lower reaches in the dry season was higher than that in the rainy season, which could be attributed to the low dilution by low water flow in the dry season and high degree of urbanization and industrialization in the lower reaches. The estradiol equivalents of EDCs in the surface water were below the predicted no-effect concentration (2 ng/L) of 17β-estradiol in the two seasons. Compared with other research results in the world, EDCs contamination in the Lhasa River Basin is at relatively low levels, and the risk in the middle and lower reaches of the Lhasa River Basin is generally low.

Ecological impact assessment of 110 micropollutants in the Yarlung Tsangpo River on the Tibetan Plateau

In this study, the occurrences of 110 micropollutants in the surface waters and sediments collected at eight sampling sites along the middle reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo River were investigated in winter. A total of 47 and 45 micropollutants were detected in at least one water or sediment sample, respectively, and their total concentrations reached 790.2 ng/L and 186.5 ng/g on a dry weight basis, respectively. Their composition profiles demonstrated that the majority of micropollutants were polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and UV filters. The mixture risk quotient (MRQ) values of the detected micropollutants regularly exceeded 1 for aquatic organisms at all sampling sites, and fish and invertebrates are the more sensitive organisms. The diversity and evenness of the zooplankton levels had a clear negative correlation with the micropollutant occurrences in water. The top 10 mixture components belonging to the UV filter and PAH categories explained more than 80% and 95% of the mixture risk for chronic and acute toxicology, respectively. This study is the first investigation of the presence and risk assessment of 110 micropollutants in the Yarlung Tsangpo River Basin and offers new insights into the ecological security of the water resources of the Tibetan Plateau.

Spatiotemporal distribution, source apportionment, and ecological risk of corticosteroids in the urbanized river system of Guangzhou, China

We investigated the occurrence and distribution of 24 selected corticosteroids (CSs) in the surface water of the Zhujiang River (ZR) system in Guangzhou, a highly urbanized river system receiving both treated and untreated municipal wastewater effluents. Twenty-two and sixteen CSs were detected in the tributaries and the main stream of the ZR system, and their concentrations ranged from less than the method quantification limit (fluticasone propionate) to 94 ng/L (clobetasone butyrate) and from 0.24 ng/L (cortisol) to 7.2 ng/L (clobetasone butyrate), respectively. We observed higher total CSs (∑CSs) concentrations in the tributaries (11-396 ng/L) relative to the main stream (5.5-33 ng/L) due to their proximity to densely populated residential areas. ∑CSs concentrations in the dry season were generally higher than those in the wet season due to low dilution from decreased river discharge. Principal component analysis and multiple linear regression analysis identified untreated domestic sewage to be the dominant source of CSs (t₂, contribution rate: 42.7%) in the urban rivers. Additional source contributions were from naturally attenuated treated and/or raw sewage (t₁, 21.5%) and effluents from wastewater treatment plants (t₃, 26.7%). CSs contribution was dominated by t₂ in the dry season, and the contributions from t₁, t₂, and t₃ showed no significant difference in the wet season. Risk assessment inferred that the ZR system is at medium to high ecological risk from CSs and is therefore a potential threat to the health of aquatic ecosystems. To prevent CSs pollution, our results demonstrate the need to develop effective control strategies to minimize the discharge of untreated waste to nearby rivers and to improve the capacity of wastewater treatment plants in Guangzhou. Further, we demonstrate that the concentrations of cortisone and fludrocortisone acetate are effective chemical indicators to estimate the level of natural and synthetic CSs contamination in urban rivers.

Overview of the analysis, occurrence and ecological effects of hormones in lake waters in Asia

Hormones are natural and synthetic compounds that are now being detected in the aquatic environment. Many lakes in Asia are important water sources that may be affected by these emerging contaminants. Lakes are drains and reservoirs of watersheds that are altered by changing land use and environmental conditions. While there are several studies on the detection of hormones in lakes, these studies were mostly done in China. Limited information is available on the presence of these contaminants in the lakes in other Asian countries. Hormones in the lake water come from discharge waters in urban areas, farm runoffs, and effluents of wastewater and sewage treatment plants. Hormones contamination in water has been shown to affect the reproduction and growth of certain aquatic organisms. In this review, a background on the chemical nature and physiological functions of hormones is provided and the existing knowledge on the occurrence and ecological impacts of hormones in lakes is described. The available analytical methods for sampling, analyte extraction and instrumental analysis are outlined. This overview provides insights on the current conditions of lakes that may be impacted by hormones contamination. Understanding the levels and possible ecological consequences will address the issues on these emerging contaminants especially in the Asian environment. This will elicit discussions on improving guidelines on wastewater discharges and will drive future research directions.

Occurrence, spatial-temporal distribution and ecological risks of pharmaceuticals and personal care products response to water diversion across the rivers in Nanjing, China

Water diversion projects have been continuously used to alleviate water quality issues that arise during urbanization. However, studies about whether it has possible effects on the status of pharmaceutical and personal care products (PPCPs) are limited. In this study, the occurrence trends and spatial-temporal distribution characteristics of 50 PPCPs were investigated in surface water, suspended particulate matter (SPM) and sediments in Nanjing urban rivers under the background of the water diversion project from the Yangtze River to the Qinhuai River. In the four field campaigns that were embarked on April to July 2018, a total of 40, 38 and 24 PPCPs were detected in surface water, SPM and sediments, respectively, with overall concentrations of 138-1990 ng/L, 3214-33,701 ng/g and 12.1-109 ng/g dry weight (dw) among nine sampling sites. The excessive concentration of caffeine (20.6-905 ng/L) may be evidence of the direct discharge of untreated sewage and an obvious indicator of the overall concentrations of PPCPs. The PPCPs contamination levels in surface water were increased along with the direction of the water diversion in urban runoff, and decreased by 8-31% due to the increase in volume attributable to the water diversion. The distribution coefficients (K_d) of pollutants in the SPM-water phases (3.0-5.6 L/kg) were two orders of magnitude higher than those in the sediment-water phases (0.3-3.3 L/kg). And the positive correlations between their log K_ow and SPM-water log K_d values indicated SPM was the important carrier determining the fate of organic UV filters. Furthermore, the results of ecological risk assessment demonstrated that although the increase in the volume of water caused by the water diversion reduced the overall ecological risks of PPCPs in urban rivers, the current contamination level still represents high risks to algae and fish.

Occurrence, distribution, and potential risks of environmental corticosteroids in surface waters from the Pearl River Delta, South China

The occurrence, spatiotemporal distribution, and potential risks of 21 glucocorticoids (GCs) and 3 mineralocorticoids (MCs) in four rivers were studied by investigating the surface waters from the Pearl River Delta (PRD), South China. These environmental corticosteroids (ECs) were commonly present in the river surface waters with average concentrations varying from <0.17 ng/L for fluticasone propionate to 5.6 ng/L for clobetasone butyrate; and cortisone had the highest concentration, 32.9 ng/L. The total ECs ranged in concentration from undetectable to 83.3 ng/L, with a mean and median of 8.1 ng/L and 4.8 ng/L, respectively. Spatially the total EC concentration levels in the Pearl River system occurred in the following order: Zhujiang River (ZR) > Dongjiang River (DR) > Shiziyang waterway (SW) > Beijiang River (BR). These levels generally demonstrated a trend of increasing from upstream to midstream or downstream then attenuating toward the estuary. Considerable seasonal variations in the ECs differed among rivers. Higher ECs concentrations in winter were mostly found in the ZR, whereas lower levels were found in the DR. Moreover, the temporal variations of the ECs were marginal in the BR and SW. These spatiotemporal distributions of the ECs might have been simultaneously influenced by pollution sources derived from anthropogenic activities and river hydrologic conditions. Correlation analyses indicated that dissolved organic carbon (DOC) could play a key role in the occurrence and distribution of ECs in an aquatic environment. Risk assessment demonstrated that the occurrence of ECs might have posed medium to high risk to aquatic organisms in the Pearl River.

Response of bloom-forming cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa to 17β-estradiol at different nitrogen levels

Co-existence of cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (CyanoHABs) and steroid estrogens (SEs) has been an increasing concern in eutrophic waters. The cellular responses and biodegradation of 17β-estradiol (E2) in cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginosa were investigated at different nitrogen levels. During the 10-d experiment, the growth of M. aeruginosa was stimulated by 10-100 μg L^-1 of E2 at the lowest nitrogen level of 0.5 mg L^-1, whereas the presence of E2 inhibited the cyanobacterial growth at 5 mg L^-1 of nitrogen. With nitrogen concentration increased to 50 mg L^-1, the impact of E2 on levels of growth rate and chlorophyll a (Chla) alleviated. Exposure to E2 also promoted the superoxide dismutase activity of M. aeruginosa, coupled with cellular oxidative damage as indicated by the increasing malondialdehyde content. A sufficient nitrogen supply mitigated the oxidative stress of E2 through enhancing the synthesis of detoxification-related enzymes. Simultaneously, the secretion of tryptophan-like substances in loosely- and tightly-bound extracellular polymeric substances was triggered for adapting to an E2 addition in the short term. Moreover, significant biodegradation of E2 was observed, and the process followed a first-order kinetic reaction. The obtained half-lives decreased with nitrogen levels and ranged from 2.47 to 2.81 and 3.39-5.04 d, respectively, at 10 and 100 μg L^-1 of E2. These results provide a better understanding of the potential effects of SEs on CyanoHABs formation, as well as the important role of CyanoHABs on SEs removal in aquatic ecosystems, which should be fully considered in the control of combined pollution.

Occurrence, behavior and risk assessment of estrogens in surface water and sediments from Hanjiang River, Central China

Estrogens have been widely detected in water and might pose a potential threat to the aquatic ecosystem. However, little information is available about the occurrence, multi-phase fate and potential risks of estrogens in Hanjiang River (HR). In this work, the concentration, multi-phase distribution and risk assessment of eight estrogens were studied by investigating surface water and sediment samples from HR during two seasons. These samples were analyzed using the solid-phase extraction (SPE) and liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). The concentrations of eight estrogens were 4.5-111 ng/l in surface water and 1.7-113 ng/g dry weight in sediments. 4-nonylphenol (NP) was the predominant estrogen in both water and sediments. The estrogens showed significantly spatial variability, with the highest average concentration in the lower section of HR (p < 0.01, F > 12.21). Meanwhile, NP, 17α-estradiol (αE2), Bisphenol A (BPA) and 4-tert-octyphenol (OP) in surface water exhibited higher concentrations in summer than in winter (p < 0.05, F > 4.62). The sediment-water partition coefficients of estrogens suggested that these compounds partitioned more to particulate phase. Risk assessment indicated that estriol (E3) was the main contributor to the total estradiol equivalent concentration. Moreover, estrogen mixtures could pose high ecological risks to aquatic organisms in surface water. Overall, estrogens are ubiquitous in HR, and their potential ecological risks should not be neglected.

Effects of natural dissolved organic matter on the complexation and biodegradation of 17α-ethinylestradiol in freshwater lakes

Natural dissolved organic matter (DOM) produced in algal blooms and overgrowths of macrophyte changes the elimination and ecotoxicity of estrogens in freshwater lakes. The complexation of 17α-ethinylestradiol (EE2) and various DOMs, including the water- and sediment-derived DOMs from the algal-dominant zone in Lake Taihu (TW and TS, respectively) and the macrophyte-dominant zone in Poyang Lake (PW and PS, respectively), and the humic acid (HA), was investigated along with the subsequent effects on EE2 biodegradation. Dialysis equilibrium experiments showed that binding to DOM significantly decreased the freely soluble concentrations of EE2. The binding capacity of the five DOMs followed the order of PW < TW < PS ≈ TS < HA. A negative correlation was found between the organic-carbon-normalized sorption coefficient (logK_DOC) and the absorption ratio (E₂/E₃) of DOM, indicating that the large sized, aromatic molecules were involved in the complexation. The reduced freely soluble concentrations of EE2 did not inhibit its biodegradation by an EE2-degrading strain, Rhodobacter blasticus. Conversely, the autochthonous-dominated water-derived DOMs stimulated a more extensive biodegradation of EE2 than the sediment-derived DOMs, and the existence of HA resulted in the smallest increase in EE2 biodegradation. The promoting effect was associated with the increased concentration, activity, and transforming rate of R. blasticus by the bioavailable components in DOM. The present study suggests that the significant impact of natural DOM should be fully considered when assessing the fate and ecological risks of estrogens in eutrophic waters.

Background nutrients and bacterial community evolution determine 13C-17β-estradiol mineralization in lake sediment microcosms

Microbial biodegradation plays a key role in determining the fate of estrogens and can be affected by the background nutrients in natural environments. However, information on how microbial community and nutrient conditions influence estrogen biodegradation is very limited. In this study, ¹³C-17β-estradiol (¹³C-E2) was supplied to sediments from the Central Area (CA), Gonghu (GH), Meiliang (ML), and Zhushan (ZS) Bays of Taihu Lake to investigate shifts in bacterial community structure associated with ¹³C-E2 mineralization over a 30-day incubation period, and the relationships between the background nutrients and cumulative ¹³C-E2 mineralization rates. The cumulative ¹³C-E2 mineralization rate for ZS Bay was 87.40% on Day 30, which was significantly greater (P < 0.05) than the rates for ML Bay (67.74%), GH Bay (62.79%), and the CA (52.60%). A correlation analysis suggested that the cumulative ¹³C-E2 mineralization rate was significantly and positively related to the concentrations of total organic carbon (P < 0.01), nitrate-nitrogen (P < 0.05), ammonia-nitrogen (P < 0.001), and dissolved phosphorus (P < 0.001) in the sediments. Although the highest relative abundances of Proteobacteria, Actinobacteria, Bacteroidetes, and Firmicutes (contain most estrogen-degrading bacteria) were not initially in the ZS Bay sediment, the addition of ¹³C-E2 stimulated their growth in all sediments, with the greatest increases observed for ZS Bay. At the genus level, the cumulative increases of seven genera (Nitrosomonas, Bacillus, Pseudomonas, Sphingomonas, Novosphingobium, Alcaligenes and Mycobacterium) considered to be associated with E2 degradation were also highest for ZS Bay (80.2 times), followed by ML Bay (39.8 times), GH Bay (28.1 times), and CA (19.0 times). Besides the higher nutrient concentrations, the responses of bacteria to ¹³C-E2 addition in ZS Bay could also explain it having the highest cumulative ¹³C-E2 mineralization rate. These results indicate both the background nutrients and bacterial community evolution in the sediments determined the ¹³C-E2 mineralization rates.

Watershed scale patterns in steroid hormones composition and content characters at a typical eutrophic lake in southeastern China

Natural steroid hormones in the aquatic environment have attracted increasing attention because of their strong endocrine disrupting potency. Seven steroid hormones (estrone, 17α-estradiol, 17β-estradiol, estriol, testosterone, androstenedione, and progesterone) were analyzed from surface water and sediment sampled from Chaohu Lake, its upstream rivers (the Hangbu River, Nanfei River, Shiwuli River, and Pai River), drainage from the adjacent farmland, and treated and untreated municipal sewage. Concentrations of the seven target steroid hormones ranged from below the detection limit (ND) to 69.5 ng L^-1 in the water of Chaohu Lake and the upstream rivers. Three steroids-estrone, estriol, and 17α-estradiol-were found in relatively high residual concentrations in the water, with maximum concentrations of 69.5 ng L^-1, 51.5 ng L^-1, and 23.3 ng L^-1, respectively. All of the target steroid hormones except estriol were detected in the sediment in concentrations of ND-16344 ng kg^-1. The dominant steroid hormone in the sediment of Chaohu Lake and the upstream rivers was 17α-estradiol. In the Shiwuli River and the Pai River, the dominant steroid hormones (estrone and estriol) were the same as those in the untreated municipal sewage. This confirmed the deduction that untreated municipal sewage was the major source of steroid hormone residues in these two rivers. The main steroid hormone in the water of the Hangbu River and Chaohu Lake was 17α-estradiol, the same as that in the farmland drainage. In addition, 17α-estradiol was verified as the major factor in the contribution of farmland drainage to the pollution in these rivers. The water in the Nanfei River had high concentrations of estriol and 17α-estradiol. This indicates that both untreated municipal sewage and farmland drainage were the major sources. The discharge of steroid hormones from the four rivers to Chaohu Lake was approximately 75.1 kg year^-1, with the highest contributor being 17α-estradiol (24 kg year^-1). Therefore, based on the results of this study, the farmland drainage should be controlled to reduce the steroid hormone pollution in Chaohu Lake.

Occurrence and ecological risk assessment of organic micropollutants in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River, China: A case study of water diversion

Water diversion has been increasingly applied to improve water quality in many water bodies. However, little is known regarding pollution by organic micropollutants (OMPs) in water diversion projects, especially at the supplier, and this pollution may threaten the quality of transferred water. In the present study, a total of 110 OMPs belonging to seven classes were investigated in water and sediment collected from a supplier of the Yangtze River within four water diversion projects. A total of 69 and 58 target OMPs were detected in water and sediment, respectively, at total concentrations reaching 1041.78 ng/L and 5942.24 ng/g dry weight (dw). Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and pharmaceuticals were the predominant pollutants identified. When preliminarily compared with the pollution in the receiving water, the Yangtze River generally exhibited mild OMPs pollution and good water quality parameters, implying a clean water source in the water diversion project. However, in Zongyang and Fenghuangjing, PAHs pollution was more abundant than that in the corresponding receiving water in Chaohu Lake. Ammonia nitrogen pollution in the Wangyu River was comparable to that in Taihu Lake. These findings imply that water diversion may threaten receiving waters in some cases. In addition, the risks of all detected pollutants in both water and sediment were assessed. PAHs in water, especially phenanthrene and high-molecular-weight PAHs, posed high risks to invertebrates, followed by the risks to fish and algae. Pharmaceuticals, such as antibiotics and antidepressants, may also pose risks to algae and fish at a number of locations. To the best of our knowledge, this report is the first to describe OMPs pollution in water diversion projects, and the results provide a new perspective regarding the security of water diversion projects.

Occurrence and partitioning behavior of organophosphate esters in surface water and sediment of a shallow Chinese freshwater lake (Taihu Lake): Implication for eco-toxicity risk

Organophosphate esters (OPEs) are ubiquitous in the aquatic environment, which have been considered or suspected as carcinogens and neurotoxicants. In this study, the occurrence, spatial distribution, potential sources, partitioning character and potential risks of OPEs in the surface water and sediment collected from Taihu Lake were investigated. The concentrations of ∑12 OPEs varied from 1.0 × 10² to 1.7 × 10³ ng/L for the surface water and from 8.1 to 4.2 × 10² ng/g dw for the sediment. Trimethyl phosphate (TEP) was the predominant congener in the surface water, while Tris(2-ethylhexyl) phosphate (TEHP) in the sediment. Positive correlations between OPEs indicated that they may have the same sources and/or similar environmental behavior. The pseudo-partitioning values of OPEs ranged from 0.59 to 6.5 × 10⁴ L/kg. TEHP has the highest pseudo-partitioning coefficient, which indicated that TEHP inclined to be enriched in the sediment in Taihu Lake. Risk assessment (RQ) showed that individual OPEs in the surface water and sediment posed no/low risk to aquatic organisms, except 2-Ethylhexyl diphenyl phosphate (EHDPP) (moderate risk) in water.

Spatiotemporal distribution and risk assessment of organophosphate esters in sediment from Taihu Lake, China

The occurrence and spatiotemporal distribution of 12 organophosphate esters (OPEs) were investigated in the sediments collected from Taihu Lake. Compared to the same lake in 2012 (3.4-14 ng/g dw), the concentrations of ∑12 OPEs in sediments ranged from 10.76 to 335.37 ng/g dw and from 8.06 to 425.39 ng/g dw in 2015 and in 2016, respectively, indicating that the OPEs levels in Taihu Lake have aggravated, recently. TEHP was the most abundant compound of the OPEs, which suggested that TEHP was the most widely used around Taihu Lake recently. The positive correlations between some of individual OPEs and the principal components analysis suggested the same potential sources for them. The strong positive correlation between ∑BPs and TOC content indicated that TOC content was one of the factors affected the distribution of ∑OPEs in the sediment. Risk quotient (RQ) for OPEs showed no high eco-toxicity risk in sediment for aquatic organisms.

The consequences of exposure to mixtures of chemicals: Something from 'nothing' and 'a lot from a little' when fish are exposed to steroid hormones

Ill-defined, multi-component mixtures of steroidal pharmaceuticals are present in the aquatic environment. Fish are extremely sensitive to some of these steroids. It is important to know how fish respond to these mixtures, and from that knowledge develop methodology that enables accurate prediction of those responses. To provide some of the data required to reach this objective, pairs of fish were first exposed to five different synthetic steroidal pharmaceuticals (one estrogen, EE2; one androgen, trenbolone; one glucocorticoid, beclomethasone dipropionate; and two progestogens, desogestrel and levonorgestrel) and concentration-response data on egg production obtained. Based on those concentration-response relationships, a five component mixture was designed and tested twice. Very similar effects were observed in the two experiments. The mixture inhibited egg production in an additive manner predicted better by the model of Independent Action than that of Concentration Addition. Our data provide a reference case for independent action in an in vivo model. A significant combined effect was observed when each steroidal pharmaceutical in the mixture was present at a concentration which on its own would produce no statistically significant effect (something from 'nothing'). Further, when each component was present in the mixture at a concentration expected to inhibit egg production by between 18% (Beclomethasone diproprionate) and 40% (trenbolone), this mixture almost completely inhibited egg production: a phenomenon we term 'a lot from a little'. The results from this proof-of-principle study suggest that multiple steroids present in the aquatic environment can be analysed for their potential combined environmental risk.

Three classes of steroids in typical freshwater aquaculture farms: Comparison to marine aquaculture farms

This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the occurrence of androgens, glucocorticoids and progestogens in typical freshwater aquaculture farms in comparison with marine aquaculture farms. The results showed that more steroids were detected in the marine aquaculture farms. For all aquatic products, the total concentrations of steroids in fish muscle were 22-2000ng/g, which were much higher than those detected in crabs, shrimps or mollusks (0.5-8.1ng/g). Based on the hazard index of the selected steroids, most water samples were in the low or medium risks. Some banned steroids were identified in the freshwater shrimps and all marine products, indicating that there may be certain health risks by the consumption of these aquatic products in the studied aquaculture farms. Furthermore, the total contributions of steroids in China were estimated to be 2300kg/y and 1200kg/y from freshwater fish culture and shrimp-crab culture, respectively.

Occurrence, distribution and sources of bisphenol analogues in a shallow Chinese freshwater lake (Taihu Lake): Implications for ecological and human health risk

Since the production and use of BPA were regulated in China around 2008, several bisphenol analogues were widely used to substitute BPA in the manufacture of polycarbonates, epoxy resins, and plastics. However, there is limited understanding of the spatial distribution, potential sources and risk assessment for those bisphenol analogues. In this study, seven bisphenol analogues were investigated in water and sediment samples from Taihu Lake, China. Compared to the same lake in 2013 (range: 5.4-87ng/L for waters and 0.37-8.3ng/g dw for sediments), the samples from Taihu Lake contained comparatively higher BPs (2.0×10²-9.5×10²ng/L and 23-4.3×10²ng/gdw) in 2016, indicating that the BPs levels in Taihu Lake have aggravated recently. In waters, BPAF has become the predominant congener in Taihu Lake, suggesting that BPAF was the most widely used substitute of BPA, recently. In sediments, BPA was the most abundant compound. Moderate or strong correlations between some individual BPs indicated that those BPs may have the common sources and/or similar environmental behavior. The strongly positive correlation between ∑BPs and TOC content indicated that TOC content was one of the major factors controlled the distribution of ∑BPs in the sediment. The risk assessment at the sampling sites showed no high eco-toxicity or estrogenic risk in Taihu Lake.

Bisphenol analogues in surface water and sediment from the shallow Chinese freshwater lakes: Occurrence, distribution, source apportionment, and ecological and human health risk

Compared to Bisphenol A (BPA), current knowledge on the spatial distribution, potential sources and environmental risk assessment of other bisphenol analogues (BPs) remains limited. The occurrence, distribution and sources of seven BPs were investigated in the surface water and sediment from Taihu Lake and Luoma Lake, which are the Chinese shallow freshwater lakes. Because there are many industries and living areas around Taihu Lake, the total concentrations of ∑BPs were much higher than that in Luoma Lake, which is away from the industry-intensive areas. For the two lakes, BPA was still the dominant BPs in both surface water and sediment, followed by BPF and BPS. The spatial distribution and principal component analysis showed that BPs in Luoma Lake was relatively homogeneous and the potential sources were relatively simple than that in Taihu Lake. The spatial distribution of BPs in sediment of Taihu Lake indicated that ∑BPs positively correlated with the TOC content. For both Taihu Lake and Luoma Lake, the risk assessment at the sampling sites showed that no high risk in surface water and sediment (RQ_t < 1.0, and EEQ_t < 1.0 ng E₂/L).

Steroid bioaccumulation profiles in typical freshwater aquaculture environments of South China and their human health risks via fish consumption

More attention was previously paid to adverse effects of steroids on aquatic organisms and their ecological risks to the aquatic environment. So far, little information has been reported on the bioaccumulative characteristics of different classes of steroids in cultured fish tissues. The present study for the first time provided a comprehensive analysis of the occurrence, bioaccumulation, and global consumers' health risks via fish consumption of androgens, glucocorticoids and progestanges in typical freshwater cultured farms in South China. The numbers and total concentrations of steroids detected in the tissues of five common species of the cultured fish were in the order of plasma > bile > liver > muscle and plasma > bile, muscle > liver, respectively. The field bioaccumulation factors for the detected synthetic steroids ranged from 450 to 97,000 in bile, 450 to 65,000 in plasma, 2900 to 16,000 in liver, and 42 to 2600 in muscle of fish, respectively. This data suggests that steroids are bioaccumulative in fish tissues. Mostly important, 4-androstene-3,17-dione (AED) and cortisone (CRN) were found to be reliable chemical indicators to predict the levels of steroids in plasma and muscle of the inter-species cultured fish, respectively. Furthermore, the maximum hazard quotients (HQs) of testosterone and progesterone were 5.8 × 10^-4 and 9.9 × 10^-5, suggesting that human health risks were negligible via ingestion of the steroids-contaminated fish.
