Novel approach for removing brominated flame retardant from aquatic environments using Cu/Fe-based metal-organic frameworks: A case of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD)

Bimetallic Copper-Cerium-Based Metal-Organic Frameworks for Selective Carbon Dioxide Capture

Metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) are highly regarded as valuable adsorbent materials in materials science, particularly in the field of CO2 capture. While numerous single-metal-based MOFs have demonstrated exceptional CO2 adsorption capabilities, recent advancements have explored the potential of bimetallic MOFs for enhanced performance. In this study, a CuCe-BTC MOF was synthesized through a straightforward hydrothermal method, and its improved properties, such as high surface area, smaller pore size, and larger pore volume, were compared with those of the bare Ce-BTC. The impact of the Cu/Ce ratio (1:4, 1:2, 1:1, and 3:2) was systematically investigated to understand how adding a second metal influences the CO2 adsorption performance of the Ce-BTC MOF. Various characterization techniques, including scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and N2 BET surface area analysis, were employed to assess the physical and chemical properties of the bare Ce-BTC and CuCe-BTC samples. Notably, CuCe-BTC-1:2 exhibited superior surface area (133 m2 g-1), small pore size (3.3 nm), and large pore volume (0.14 cm3 g-1) compared to the monometallic Ce-BTC. Furthermore, CuCe-BTC-1:2 demonstrated a superior CO2 adsorption capacity (0.74 mmol g-1), long-term stability, and good CO2/N2 selectivity. This research provides valuable insights into the design of metal-BTC frameworks and elucidates how introducing a second metal enhances the properties of the monometallic Ce-BTC-MOF, leading to improved CO2 capture performance.

Functionalization strategies of metal-organic frameworks for biomedical applications and treatment of emerging pollutants: A review

One of the representative coordination polymers, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) material, is of hotspot interest in the multi field thanks to their unique structural characteristics and properties. As a novel hierarchical structural class, MOFs show diverse topologies, intrinsic behaviors, flexibility, etc. However, bare MOFs have less desirable biofunction, high humid sensitivity and instability in water, restraining their efficiencies in biomedical and environmental applications. Thus, a structural modification is required to address such drawbacks. Herein, we pinpoint new strategies in the synthesis and functionalization of MOFs to meet demanding requirements in in vitro tests, i.e., antibacterial face masks against corona virus infection and in wound healing and nanocarriers for drug delivery in anticancer. Regarding the treatment of wastewater containing emerging pollutants such as POPs, PFAS, and PPCPs, functionalized MOFs showed excellent performance with high efficiency and selectivity. Challenges in toxicity, vast database of clinical trials for biomedical tests and production cost can be still presented. MOFs-based composites can be, however, a bright candidate for reasonable replacement of traditional nanomaterials in biomedical and wastewater treatment applications.

Advanced electrocatalytic redox processes for environmental remediation of halogenated organic water pollutants

Halogenated organic compounds are widespread, and decades of heavy use have resulted in global bioaccumulation and contamination of the environment, including water sources. Here, we introduce the most common halogenated organic water pollutants, their classification by type of halogen (fluorine, chlorine, or bromine), important policies and regulations, main applications, and environmental and human health risks. Remediation techniques are outlined with particular emphasis on carbon-halogen bond strengths. Aqueous advanced redox processes are discussed, highlighting mechanistic details, including electrochemical oxidations and reductions of the water-oxygen system, and thermodynamic potentials, protonation states, and lifetimes of radicals and reactive oxygen species in aqueous electrolytes at different pH conditions. The state of the art of aqueous advanced redox processes for brominated, chlorinated, and fluorinated organic compounds is presented, along with reported mechanisms for aqueous destruction of select PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). Future research directions for aqueous electrocatalytic destruction of organohalogens are identified, emphasizing the crucial need for developing a quantitative mechanistic understanding of degradation pathways, the improvement of analytical detection methods for organohalogens and transient species during advanced redox processes, and the development of new catalysts and processes that are globally scalable.

Programmed T cells infiltration into lung metastases with harnessing dendritic cells in cancer immunotherapies by catalytic antigen-capture sponges

T lymphocytes served as immune surveillance to suppress metastases by physically interacting with cancer cells. Whereas tumor immune privilege and heterogeneity protect immune attack, it limits immune cell infiltration into tumors, especially in invasive metastatic clusters. Here, a catalytic antigen-capture sponge (CAS) containing the catechol-functionalized copper-based metal organic framework (MOF) and chloroquine (CQ) for programming T cells infiltration is reported. The intravenously injected CAS accumulates at the tumor via the folic acid-mediated target and margination effect. In metastases, Fenton-like reaction induced by copper ions of CAS disrupts the intracellular redox potential, i.e., chemodynamic therapy (CDT), thereby reducing glutathione (GSH) levels. Furthermore, CQ helps inhibit autophagy by inducing lysosomal deacidification during CDT. This process leads to the breakdown of self-defense mechanisms, which exacerbates cytotoxicity. The therapies promote the liberation of tumor-associated antigens, such as neoantigens and damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs). Subsequently, the catechol groups present on CAS perform as antigen reservoirs and transport the autologous tumor-associated antigens to dendritic cells, resulting in prolonged immune activation. The CAS, which is capable of forming in-situ, serves as an antigen reservoir in CDT-mediated lung metastasis and leads to the accumulation of immune cells in metastatic clusters, thus hindering metastatic tumors.

Polydopamine-Coated Cu-BTC Nanowires for Effective Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Photothermal Therapy

Herein, we present a one-pot hydrothermal approach for synthesizing metal–organic framework-derived copper (II) benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) nanowires (NWs) using dopamine as the reducing agent and precursor for a polydopamine (PDA) surface coating formation. In addition, PDA can act as a PTT agent and enhance NIR absorption, producing photothermal effects on cancer cells. These NWs displayed a photothermal conversion efficiency of 13.32% after PDA coating and exhibited good photothermal stability. Moreover, NWs with a suitable T1 relaxivity coefficient (r1 = 3.01 mg−1 s−1) can be effectively used as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) contrast agents. By increasing concentrations, cellular uptake studies showed a greater uptake of Cu-BTC@PDA NWs into cancer cells. Further, in vitro studies showed PDA-coated Cu-BTC NWs possess exceptional therapeutic performance by 808 nm laser irradiation, destroying 58% of cancer cells compared with the absence of laser irradiation. This promising performance is anticipated to advance the research and implementation of copper-based NWs as theranostic agents for cancer treatment.

Extruded polystyrene microplastics as a source of brominated flame retardant additives in the marine environment: long-term field and laboratory experiments

Microplastics (MPs) in the environment have become a global concern, not only for the physical effects of the plastic particles themselves but also for being vectors of chemical additives. In this context, little is known about the ability of MPs, particularly extruded polystyrene microplastics (XPS-MPs), to release organic chemical additives in the marine environment. In this study, a series of field and laboratory experiments were carried out to determine the leaching behaviour of organic additives including brominated flame retardants from XPS-MPs into seawater. The conducted experiments confirmed a rapid release of bisphenol A (BPA), 2,4,6-tribromophenol (TBP), tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA) and hexabromocyclododecane diastereoisomers (α-, β-, and γ-HBCDD) from the studied MPs followed by a slower rate of release over time. The effects of environmental factors on the leaching rates of these additives were also examined. Increasing Dissolved Organic Matter (DOM) concentrations and the temperature of the seawater enhanced the release of additives by increasing their solubility and polymer flexibility. In contrast, pH tested at 7, 7.5 and 8 was found to have a minor effect on additives leaching; and salinity negatively affected the leaching rate likely due to their reduced solubility and reduced diffusion from the MPs. The present study provides empirical evidence of the behaviour of XPS-MPs as a source of organic additives in the marine environment that merit further investigation.

Deep Learning Image Analysis of Nanoplasmonic Sensors: Toward Medical Breath Monitoring

Sensing biomarkers in exhaled breath offers a potentially portable, cost-effective, and noninvasive strategy for disease diagnosis screening and monitoring, while high sensitivity, wide sensing range, and target specificity are critical challenges. We demonstrate a deep learning-assisted plasmonic sensing platform that can detect and quantify gas-phase biomarkers in breath-related backgrounds of varying complexity. The sensing interface consisted of Au/SiO₂ nanopillars covered with a 15 nm metal-organic framework. A small camera was utilized to capture the plasmonic sensing responses as images, which were subjected to deep learning signal processing. The approach has been demonstrated at a classification accuracy of 95 to 98% for the diabetic ketosis marker acetone within a concentration range of 0.5-80 μmol/mol. The reported work provides a thorough exploration of single-sensor capabilities and sets the basis for more advanced utilization of artificial intelligence in sensing applications.

Catalytic degradation of brominated flame retardants in the environment: New techniques and research highlights

Due to the extensive commercial use of brominated flame retardants (BFRs), human beings are chronically exposed to BFRs, causing great harms to human health, which imposes urgent demands to degrade them in the environment. Among various degradation techniques, catalytic degradation has been proven to be outstanding because of its rapidness and effectiveness. Therefore, much attention has been given to catalytic degradation, especially the extensively studied photocatalytic degradation and nanocatalytic reduction techniques. Recently, some novel advanced catalytic techniques have been developed and show excellent catalytic degradation efficiency for BFRs, including natural substances catalytic degradation, new Fenton catalytic degradation, new chemical reagent catalytic degradation, new material catalytic degradation, electrocatalytic degradation, plasma catalytic degradation, and composite catalytic degradation systems. In addition to the common features of traditional catalytic techniques, these novel techniques possess their own specific advantages in various aspects. Therefore, this review summarized the degradation mechanism of BFRs by the above new catalytic degradation methods under the laboratory conditions, simulated real environment, and real environment conditions, and further evaluated their advantages and disadvantages, aiming to provide some research ideas for the catalytic degradation of BFRs in the environment in the future. We suggested that more attention should focus on features of novel catalytic techniques, including eco-friendliness, cost-effectiveness, and pragmatic usefulness.

Potential of biocompatible calcium-based metal-organic frameworks for the removal of endocrine-disrupting compounds in aqueous environments

Rapid urbanization, industrialization and population growth have accelerated the amount and variety of emerging contaminants being released into the aqueous environment, including endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs). The introduction of these compounds constitutes a threat to human health and the environment, even at trace levels. Hence, new water treatment technologies are urgently required to effectively remove EDCs from water. The currently available technologies used in water remediation processes are expensive and ineffective, and some produce harmful by-products. Calcium-based metal-organic frameworks (Ca-MOFs) are porous synthetic materials that can potentially be applied as adsorbents. These MOFs are hydrolytically stable, biocompatible and low-cost compared with conventional porous materials. The structure of Ca-MOFs is maintained even though calcium metal centers in the structure can easily coordinate with water. Ca-MOFs and their composite derivatives have the potential for use in water purification because these biocompatible adsorbents have been shown to selectively extract a significant quantity of contaminants. This review highlights the potential of Ca-MOFs to adsorb EDCs from aqueous environments and discusses adsorbent preparation methods, adsorption mechanisms, removal capacity, water stability and recyclability. This review will support future efforts in synthesizing new biocompatible MOFs as an environmental treatment technology that can effectively remove EDCs from water, thereby improving environmental and human health.

Recent Progress in the Removal of Legacy and Emerging Organic Contaminants from Wastewater Using Metal-Organic Frameworks: An Overview on Adsorption and Catalysis Processes

Water covers about 70% of the Earth’s surface, but the amount of freshwater available for human use is only 2.5% and, although it is continuously replenished via the water cycle, freshwater is a finite and limited resource. The Earth’s water is affected by pollution and while water quality is an issue of global concern, the specific regulations on contaminants of emerging concern (CECs) are limited. In order to achieve the goals set by EU regulations, the treatment of wastewater is a scientifically and technologically challenging issue. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) are promising materials used for the removal of priority and emerging contaminants from wastewater, since they can mitigate those contaminants via both adsorption as well as catalysis processes. MOFs can offer selective adsorption of CECs by various adsorption mechanisms. The catalytic removal of priority and emerging organic contaminants from wastewater using MOFs implies Fenton, electro-Fenton, and photo-Fenton processes. Overall, MOFs can be considered as promising materials for the elimination of priority and emerging organic contaminants from various wastewater types, but the involved processes must be studied in detail for a larger number of compounds.

Ultrasonic-Assisted Synthesis of Fe-BTC-PEG Metal-Organic Complex: An Effective and Safety Nanocarrier for Anticancer Drug Delivery

The porous metal-organic complexes are emerging as novel carriers for effective and safe delivery of drugs for cancer treatment, minimizing the side effect of drug overuse during cancer treatment. This study fabricated the Fe-BTC-PEG metal-organic complex from Fe ions, trimesic acid, and poly(ethylene glycol) as precursors using an ultrasonic-assisted method. The morphology and crystallinity of the resultant complex were observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD), respectively. FTIR spectroscopy was employed to investigate the functional groups on the surface of the Fe-BTC-PEG complex. The result showed that the prepared Fe-BTC-PEG complex was in particle form with low crystallinity and diameter ranging from 100 to 200 nm. The obtained Fe-BTC-PEG complex exhibited a high loading capacity for the 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) anticancer drug with a maximal capacity of 364 mg/g. The releasing behavior of 5-fluorouracil from the 5-FU-loaded Fe-BTC-PEG complex was studied. Notably, the acute oral toxicity of the Fe-BTC-PEG metal-organic complex was also carried out to evaluate the safety of the material in practical application.

Enhanced sequestration of tetracycline by Mn(II) encapsulated mesoporous silica nanoparticles: Synergistic sorption and mechanism

A novel Mn(II) encapsulated mesoporous silica nanoparticles (Mn-MSNs) was developed for efficiently removing antibiotic tetracycline from aqueous solutions. The material has a well-ordered, hexagonal mesopore structure with a large specific surface area (720 m²/g) and maximum sorption capacity (229 mg/g) that is about an order of magnitude higher than that of mesoporous silica nanoparticles without Mn-encapsulated, or encapsulated with other transition metal cations Fe³⁺ and Cu²⁺. Sorption results showed that the materials can sequestrate tetracycline within a large concentration range (5 μg/L-450 mg/L). Batch sorption experiment, spectroscopic analysis and density functional theory calculation collectively indicated that Mn-O complexation was the dominant mechanism for the tetracycline sorption. Electrostatic attraction and cation-π interaction also contributed to tetracycline sorption with their contribution levels varying with pH in a synergetic way with the Mn-O complexation. The Mn(II) encapsulated MSNs exhibited a good regeneration property over five repeated sorption-desorption cycles, demonstrating its promising potential in the cost-effective applications of sequestrating tetracycline from wastewater, drinking water, and contaminated solutions.

Iron-based metal-organic framework: Synthesis, structure and current technologies for water reclamation with deep insight into framework integrity

Water is a supreme requirement for the existence of life, the contamination from the point and non-point sources are creating a great threat to the water ecosystem. Advance tools and techniques are required to restore the water quality and metal-organic framework (MOFs) with a tunable porous structure, striking physical and chemical properties are an excellent candidate for it. Fe-based MOFs, which developed rapidly in recent years, are foreseen as most promising to overcome the disadvantages of traditional water depolluting practices. Fe-MOFs with low toxicity and preferable stability possess excellent performance potential for almost all water remedying techniques in contrast to other MOF structures, especially visible light photocatalysis, Fenton, and Fenton-like heterogeneous catalysis. Fe-MOFs become essential tool for water treatment due to their high catalytic activity, abundant active site and pollutant-specific adsorption. However, the structural degradation under external chemical, photolytic, mechanical, and thermal stimuli is impeding Fe-MOFs from further improvement in activity and their commercialization. Understanding the shortcomings of structural integrity is crucial for large-scale synthesis and commercial implementation of Fe-MOFs-based water treatment techniques. Herein we summarize the synthesis, structure and recent advancements in water remediation methods using Fe-MOFs in particular more attention is paid for adsorption, heterogeneous catalysis and photocatalysis with clear insight into the mechanisms involved. For ease of analysis, the pollutants have been classified into two major classes; inorganic pollutants and organic pollutants. In this review, we present for the first time a detailed insight into the challenges in employing Fe-MOFs for water remediation due to structural instability.

Controllable Synthesis of 1, 3, 5-tris (1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl) Benzene-Based MOFs

The growing interest in metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) in both industrial and scientific circles has increased in the last twenty years, owing to their crystallinity, structural versatility, and controlled porosity. In this study, we present three novel MOFs obtained from the 1, 3, 5-tris (1H-benzo[d]imidazole-2-yl) benzene (TIBM) organic linker. The formed TIBM crystal powders were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) to estimate the morphology of the particles, powder X-ray diffraction (XRD) to confirm the crystal structure, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) method for structural analysis, and thermogravimetric measurements to examine the thermal stability. The TIBM-Cu MOF showed excellent CO2 (3.60 mmol/g) adsorption capacity at 1 bar and 298 K, because of the open Cu site, compared to TIBM-Cr (1.6 mmol/g) and TIBM-Al (2.1 mmol/g). Additionally, due to the high porosity (0.3–1.5 nm), TIBM-Cu MOF showed a considerable CO2/N2 selectivity (53) compared to TIBM-Al (35) and TIBM-Cr (10).

Sorption of tetracycline onto hexabromocyclododecane/polystyrene composite and polystyrene microplastics: Statistical physics models, influencing factors, and interaction mechanisms

Microplastics (MPs) are becoming a major concern due to their great potential to sorb and transport pollutants in the aquatic environment; hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) is a common chemical additive in polystyrene (PS) MPs. However, the underlying mechanisms for the interaction of tetracycline (TC) onto HBCD-PS composites MPs (HBCD-PS MPs) are still not well documented. Our findings showed that the addition of HBCD resulted in a relatively higher hydrophobicity of PS MPs, and significantly enhanced the sorption ability of HBCD-PS MPs for TC. The kinetic models suggested that the sorption of TC onto PS and HBCD-PS MPs were mainly controlled by film diffusion and intra-particle diffusion, respectively. The statistical physics models were used to elucidate the sorption of TC onto PS and HBCD-PS MPs was associated with the formation of the monolayer, and the results indicated the TC was sorbed onto the two MPs by both multi-molecular and non-parallel processes. The TC sorption was solution pH-dependent while the effect of NaCl content on TC sorption was negligible. The presence of Cu(Ⅱ), Pb(Ⅱ), Cd(Ⅱ), and Zn(Ⅱ) ions had different influences on the TC sorption onto both the MPs. Overall, various mechanisms including π-π and hydrophobic interactions jointly regulated the sorption of TC onto both the MPs. Our results provided new insights into the sorption behavior and interaction mechanisms of TC onto both the MPs and highlighted that the addition of HBCD likely increased the enrichment capacity of MPs for pollutants in the environment.

Exposure evaluation and risk assessment of polybrominated diphenyl ethers in dust from microenvironments in Nsukka, Nigeria

The health risks of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) to toddlers, children, and adults in creches, nursery schools, cars, and offices in Nsukka, Nigeria, via inhalation, ingestion, and dermal exposure pathways were evaluated. Eight PBDEs congeners (BDE-28, BDE-47, BDE-100, BDE-99, BDE-154, BDE-153, BDE-183, and BDE-209) were determined using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. This is the first study on PBDEs in creches and nursery schools in Africa. The mean (median) ∑8PBDEs (ng/g) in creches, nursery schools, offices, and cars were 4355 (1850), 2095 (1130), and 37741 (2620) respectively. The concentrations of PBDEs between the three microenvironments were significantly different (p ˂ 0.05), and the highest concentration was found in cars. Ingestion of dust was the predominant pathway of exposure to PBDEs for toddlers and children, while dermal absorption was the dominant pathway for adults. Dermal absorption and ingestion in cars, creches, and nursery schools were of the same magnitude. Toddlers with the highest ingestion rate of PBDEs in creches, nursery schools, and cars are at risk especially from prolonged exposure.

The effects of DOPO modified Co-based metalorganic framework on flame retardancy, stiffness and thermal stability of epoxy resin

In this work, the effect of a modified metal organic framework material on the fire resistance and mechanical properties of epoxy resin (EP) has been explored. The cobalt based metal organic framework (ZIF-67) was synthesized from an organic ligand with a Schiff base structure. Then DOPO@ZIF-67 was synthesized by modifying ZIF-67 with 9,10-dihydro-9-oxa-10-phosphaphenanthrene-10-oxide (DOPO), and its effect on EP modification was explored. Compared with the pure EP, 4% DOPO@ZIF-67/EP passed the UL94 V-0 level and the ultimate oxygen index (LOI) reached 32.1%. The SEM pictures of carbon residue indicated that DOPO@ZIF-67 formed a more continuous and dense microstructure, which can enhance the thermal barrier and the physical barrier effect. The addition of DOPO@ZIF-67 also can effectively improve the stiffness and damping coefficient of EP composite material. The porous skeleton structure of DOPO@ZIF-67 can endow EP with rigidity and flame-retardant properties. Furthermore, the existence of DOPO made the combination of ZIF-67 with EP better. The results of this study suggest that DOPO@ZIF-67 may be a good additive for modification of the properties of epoxy thermosetting materials.

Synthesis and Toxicity of Halogenated Bisphenol Monosubstituted-Ethers: Establishing a Library for Potential Environmental Transformation Products of Emerging Contaminant

As an important branch of halogenated bisphenol compounds, the halogenated bisphenol monosubstituted-ether compounds have received a lot of attention in environmental health science because of their toxicity and variability. In this study, a synthetic method for bisphenol monosubstituted-ether byproduct libraries was developed. By using the versatile and efficient method, tetrachlorobisphenol A, tetrabromobisphenol A, and tetrabromobisphenol S monosubstituted alkyl-ether compounds were accessed in 39-82 % yield. Subsequently, the cytotoxicity of 27 compounds were screened using three different cell lines (HepG2, mouse primary astrocytes and Chang liver cells). Compound 2,6-dibromo-4-[3,5-dibromo-4-(2-hydroxyethoxy)benzene-1-sulfonyl]phenol was more toxic than other compounds in various cells, and the sensitivity of this compound to the normal hepatocytes and cancer cells was inconsistent. The compounds 2,6-dichloro-4-(2-{3,5-dichloro-4-[(prop-2-en-1-yl)oxy]phenyl}propan-2-yl)phenol and 2,6-dibromo-4-(2-{3,5-dibromo-4-[(prop-2-en-1-yl)oxy]phenyl}propan-2-yl)phenol were the most toxic to HepG2 cells, and most of the other compounds inhibited cell proliferation. Moreover, typical compounds were also reproductive and developmental toxic to zebrafish embryos at different concentrations. The synthetic byproduct libraries could be used as pure standard compounds and applied in research on environmental behavior and the transformation of halogenated flame retardants.

Degradation of hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) by nanoscale zero-valent aluminum (nZVAl)

Hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) has been listed in Annex A of the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) in 2013, but till now there is a lack of efficient methods for its degradation. In this study, nanoscale zero-valent aluminum (nZVAl), an excellent reductant with a very low redox potential of E⁰(Al³⁺/Al⁰) = -1.662 V and strong electron transfer ability, was used to reductively degrade HBCD. Nearly 100% HBCD was degraded within 8 h reaction at 25 °C in ethanol/water (v/v, 50/50) solution without pH adjustment. And about 67% cyclododecatriene (CDT) was obtained, which is the complete debromination product. What's more, the yield of Br^- could achieve nearly 100% after optimizing conditions. The reaction was strongly promoted by increasing the dosages of nZVAl or decreasing the initial concentration of HBCD. The temperature had the most significant influence and the degradation was completed in 40 min with elevating the reaction temperature to 45 °C. The reaction mechanism was further revealed through the characterization of nZVAl particles before and after the reaction by SEM-EDS, TEM, HRTEM, XRD, and XPS. It was found that, after corrosion of the oxide film on the surface of nZVAl, metallic aluminum inside was exposed. The reactive sites were provided and electrons released were transferred from nZVAl to HBCD, causing HBCD degraded to dibromocyclododecadiene (DBCD) and then CDT by reductive debromination. These findings imply that nZVAl can degrade HBCD efficiently with no extra energy input and this offers a new idea for better treatment of HBCD.

Improved Chloride Ion Sensing Performance of Flexible Ag-NPs/AgCl Electrode Sensor Using Cu-BTC as an Effective Adsorption Layer

We designed the flexible chloride ion selective sensor that directly monitors electrochemical reactions of chloride ions without using a reference electrode. A flexible polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) substrate was utilized to provide bendability to the fabricated sensor. As an ion selective material, Ag nanoparticles were employed on the MWCNTs loaded on the PTFE substrate. Enhanced adsorption property of the fabricated sensor toward the chloride ions was given by incorporation of hydrophilic copper benzene-1,3,5-tricarboxylate (Cu-BTC) with great flexibility and stability. Accordingly, compared to the bare sensor the sensing performance of the Cu-BTC treated Ag NPs/AgCl electrode sensor was improved by indicating the decrease in response and recovery time about 4 times. It elucidated that the Cu-BTC layer could work as an effective medium between the Ag-NPs surface and electrolyte containing chloride ions. As a result of contact angle measurement, the hydrophilicity much increased in the Cu-BTC treated sensor because the exposed surface of the sensor not treated by the Cu-BTC largely consisted of hydrophobic MWCNTs. Furthermore, the Cu-BTC layer could hold the electrolyte for effective adsorption of analytes with large specific surface area.

Spatial Distribution of Organophosphorus and Brominated Flame Retardants in Surface Water, Sediment, Groundwater, and Wild Fish in Chengdu, China

The occurrence and spatial distribution of 13 organophosphorus flame retardants (OPFRs), 11 polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), and eight novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs) were investigated in Jinjiang river water, sediment, crucian carp, and groundwater in Chengdu, China. OPFRs were predominant and ubiquitous contaminants in the Jinjiang river water, sediment, groundwater, fish muscle, fish gills, and viscera with concentrations ranging from 19.1 to 533 ng L^-1, 12.5 to 253 ng g^-1, 11.7 to 149 ng L^-1, 114 to 2108 ng g^-1 lipid weight (lw), 220 to 638 ng g^-1 lw, and 116 to 1356 ng g^-1 lw, respectively. The halogenated OPFRs were the primary pollutant in the Jinjiang river water samples, whereas nonhalogenated OPFRs were the dominant OPFRs in the sediments. Brominated flame retardants were not detected in the groundwater, whereas the NBFRs detected in aquatic environment at low frequency. The ΣPBDEs ranged from n.d. to 23.4 ng L^-1 and n.d. to 48.7 ng g^-1 in the Jinjiang river water and sediment, respectively. BDE-209 was dominant in the sediment samples with concentrations ranging from n.d. to 47.2 ng g^-1. The PBDEs levels in the muscle, gills, and viscera of the crucian carp ranged from 10.6 to 90.6 ng g^-1 lw, n.d. to 75.6 ng g^-1 lw, and n.d. to 219 ng g^-1 lw, respectively. BDE-47, chlorinated, and alkyl OPFRs were the main contaminants in the fish samples.

Thermal catalytic degradation of α-HBCD, β-HBCD and γ-HBCD over Fe3O4 micro/nanomaterial: Kinetic behavior, product analysis and mechanism hypothesis

The new persistent organic pollutant (POP), 1,2,5,6,9,10-hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD), has been widely detected in various environmental media and proved to be biotoxic. However, the research on catalytic degradation of HBCD is in its infancy. Herein, we examined the degradation of α-HBCD, β-HBCD and γ-HBCD, over Fe₃O₄ micro/nanomaterial at 200 °C. The pseudo-first-order kinetic rate constants were in the range of 0.04-0.15 min^-1, with half-life values of 5-19 min. γ-HBCD is slightly less stable than β-HBCD, but both of them readily convert into α-HBCD, as consistent with the Gibbs free energies of isomers themselves. The four products containing pentabromocyclododecene, two isomers of tetrabromocyclododecene and 1,5,9-cyclododecatriene were detected by conventional GC-MS. Interestingly, a high-throughput non-target product detection were performed by ESI-FT-ICR-MS, where up to 59 types of intermediate products were determined. It is tentatively proposed that different types of bromine-removed products (C₁₂H₁₇Br₅, C₁₂H₁₈Br₄, C₁₂H₁₈, C₁₂H₁₉Br₅, C₁₂H₂₄ and C₁₂H₁₉Br₅O) and cyclododecane ring-opened products (C₁₂H₁₉Br₇, C₁₂H₂₀Br₆O and C₁₂H₂₀Br₆) form via elimination reaction, nucleophilic substitution, hydrodebromination and addition reaction. Besides, most of the products that were detected contained oxygen. The average carbon oxidation state (OS_c¯) of the products indicate that the oxidation reaction is the dominant reaction type. Deep oxidation products, such as small molecular organic acids (formic, acetic, propionic, and butyric acids) and gas-phase oxidation products (CO₂ and CO) were further detected by ion chromatography and GC-FID, respectively. This study might provide an alternative technique for the low-cost treatment of HBCD waste.

Preparation of polydopamine-modified zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 functionalized electrospun fibers for efficient removal of tetracycline

This work shows a simple and environmental friendly methodology to obtain a kind of polydopamine coating assisted preparation of zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8) functionalized composite electrospun fiber (ZIF-8/PDA/PAN fibers) adsorbent. Characterization of the composite electrospun fiber was carried out and the tetracycline (TC) adsorption properties from water were also studied in detail. At the same time, principle adsorption mechanisms were thoroughly studied. The results show that the pseudo-second-order model can simulate sorption kinetics well, while sorption isotherms are able to significantly conform to the Freundlich model, and the adsorption capacity of the fibers can reach 478.18 mg/g at 298 K. In addition, the Weber-Morris model indicates that the processes of adsorption of ZIF-8/PDA/PAN fibers for TC involve surface adsorption as well as intraparticle diffusion, and the limit rate step is not only the intraparticle diffusion but also the binding of the sorbate to the sorbent. Moreover, the adsorption efficiency toward TC by ZIF-8/PDA/PAN fibers still reached over 85% of its initial adsorption capacity after five adsorption/desorption cycles, which signified that the adsorbents is stable and recyclable. This work indicates that the obtained ZIF-8/PDA/PAN fibers have practical application prospects in the field of antibiotic adsorption.

Selective adsorption and removal of drug contaminants by using an extremely stable Cu(II)-based 3D metal-organic framework

The adsorption capacity of three representative pharmaceutical drugs and personal care products (PPCPs) viz. diclofenac sodium (DCF), chlorpromazine hydrochloride (CLF) and amodiaquin dihydrochloride (ADQ), were preliminarily studied using a water-stable Cu(II)-based metal organic framework (MOF) [Cu(BTTA)]_n·2DMF (1) (H₂BTTA = 1,4-bis(triazol-1-yl)terephthalic acid). We also investigated the factors influencing the adsorption such as concentration, pH, contact time, temperature and dosages. The results show that the adsorption capacity of 1 for DCF (650 mg g-¹) from aqueous medium, which is higher in comparison to most of the reported MOFs. While the adsorption of CLF and ADQ are only 67 mg g-¹ and 72 mg g-¹, respectively. The adsorption isotherm and adsorption kinetics indicated that the adsorption of diclofenac sodium by 1 follows Freundlich model with R² value of 0.9902 and pseudo-first-order kinetics with correlation coefficient 0.9939 and K₁ value of 0.0058 min^-1, respectively. Investigations indicate that 1 could become a potential material to adsorb DCF from aqueous medium.

The efficiency and mechanism of dibutyl phthalate removal by copper-based metal organic frameworks coupled with persulfate

Copper-based metal organic framework (Cu-BTC) was prepared and used to remove dibutyl phthalate (DBP) in the presence of persulfate (PS). The surface characteristics, textural properties, and stability of activated Cu-BTC (denoted as Cu-BTC-A) were evaluated by scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), Raman spectroscopy, N2 physical adsorption-desorption, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The effects of parameters such as initial pH, PS concentration, catalyst dosage, and free-radical quenchers have been investigated. The results showed that DBP could be removed in a wide pH range by Cu-BTC-A via mechanisms of adsorption and heterogeneous catalytic reaction. Unfortunately, the DBP removal was not completed because of radical scavenging reactions in Cu-BTC-A cages where PS can enter freely but DBP is blocked outside. Another explanation was that Cu-BTC-A showed a low adsorption capacity for DBP because the molecular size of DBP (15.84 × 11.00 × 7.56 Å) is larger than microporous cages (approximately 9 × 9 Å in diameter) of Cu-BTC-A.
