A new scenario of lead contamination in potable water distribution systems: Galvanic corrosion between lead and stainless steel

Metabolomics reveals the phytotoxicity mechanisms of foliar spinach exposed to bulk and nano sizes of PbCO3

PbCO3 is an ancient raw material for Pb minerals and continues to pose potential risks to the environment and human health through mining and industrial processes. However, the specific effects of unintentional PbCO3 discharge on edible plants remain poorly understood. This study unravels how foliar application of PbCO3 induces phytotoxicity by potentially influencing leaf morphology, photosynthetic pigments, oxidative stress, and metabolic pathways related to energy regulation, cell damage, and antioxidant defense in Spinacia oleracea L. Additionally, it quantifies the resultant human health risks. Plants were foliarly exposed to PbCO3 nanoparticles (NPs) and bulk products (BPs), as well as Pb2+ at 0, 5, 10, 25, 50, and 100 mg·L-1 concentrations once a day for three weeks. The presence and localization of PbCO3 NPs inside the plant cells were confirmed by TEM-EDS analysis. The maximum accumulation of total Pb was recorded in the root (2947.77 mg·kg-1 DW for ion exposure), followed by the shoot (942.50 mg·kg-1 DW for NPs exposure). The results revealed that PbCO3 and Pb2+ exposure had size- and dose-dependent inhibitory effects on spinach length, biomass, and photosynthesis attributes, inducing impacts on the antioxidase activity of CAT, membrane permeability, and nutrient elements absorption and translocation. Pb2+ exhibited pronounced toxicity in morphology and chlorophyll; PbCO3 BP exposure accumulated the most lipid peroxidation products of MDA and H2O2; and PbCO3 NPs triggered the largest cell membrane damage. Furthermore, PbCO3 NPs at 10 and 100 mg·L-1 induced dose-dependent metabolic reprogramming in spinach leaves, disturbing the metabolic mechanisms related to amino acids, antioxidant defense, oxidative phosphorylation, fatty acid cycle, and the respiratory chain. The spinach showed a non-carcinogenic health risk hierarchy: Pb2+ > PbCO3 NPs > PbCO3 BPs, with children more vulnerable than adults. These findings enhance our understanding of PbCO3 particle effects on food security, emphasizing the need for further research to minimize their impact on human dietary health.

US drinking water quality: exposure risk profiles for seven legacy and emerging contaminants

BACKGROUND

Advances in drinking water infrastructure and treatment throughout the 20th and early 21st century dramatically improved water reliability and quality in the United States (US) and other parts of the world. However, numerous chemical contaminants from a range of anthropogenic and natural sources continue to pose chronic health concerns, even in countries with established drinking water regulations, such as the US.

OBJECTIVE/METHODS

In this review, we summarize exposure risk profiles and health effects for seven legacy and emerging drinking water contaminants or contaminant groups: arsenic, disinfection by-products, fracking-related substances, lead, nitrate, per- and polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) and uranium. We begin with an overview of US public water systems, and US and global drinking water regulation. We end with a summary of cross-cutting challenges that burden US drinking water systems: aging and deteriorated water infrastructure, vulnerabilities for children in school and childcare facilities, climate change, disparities in access to safe and reliable drinking water, uneven enforcement of drinking water standards, inadequate health assessments, large numbers of chemicals within a class, a preponderance of small water systems, and issues facing US Indigenous communities.

RESULTS

Research and data on US drinking water contamination show that exposure profiles, health risks, and water quality reliability issues vary widely across populations, geographically and by contaminant. Factors include water source, local and regional features, aging water infrastructure, industrial or commercial activities, and social determinants. Understanding the risk profiles of different drinking water contaminants is necessary for anticipating local and general problems, ascertaining the state of drinking water resources, and developing mitigation strategies.

Characterization of childhood exposure to environmental contaminants using stool in a semi-urban middle-class cohort from eastern Canada

Children are exposed to various environmental organic and inorganic contaminants with effects on health outcomes still largely unknown. Many matrices (e.g., blood, urine, nail, hair) have been used to characterize exposure to organic and inorganic contaminants. The sampling of feces presents several advantages; it is non-invasive and provides a direct evaluation of the gut microbiome exposure to contaminants. The gut microbiome is a key factor in neurological development through the brain-gut axis. Its composition and disturbances can affect the neurodevelopment of children. Characterization of children exposure to contaminants is often performed on vulnerable populations (e.g., from developing countries, low-income neighborhoods, and large urban centers). Data on the exposure of children from middle-class, semi-urban, and mid-size populations to contaminants is scarce despite representing a significant fraction of the population in North America. In this study, 73 organics compounds from different chemical classes and 22 elements were analyzed in 6 years old (n = 84) and 10 years old (n = 119) children's feces from a middle-class, semi-urban, mid-size population cohort from Eastern Canada. Results show that 67 out of 73 targeted organics compounds and all elements were at least detected in one child's feces. Only caffeine (97% & 80%) and acetaminophen (28% & 48%) were detected in more than 25% of the children's feces, whereas all elements besides titanium were detected in more than 50% of the children.

Release of Particulate Lead from Four Lead Corrosion Products in Drinking Water: A Laboratory Study Coupled with Microscopic Observations and Computational Fluid Dynamics

Particulate lead resulting from the detachment of lead corrosion products (LCPs) contributes significantly to lead contamination in drinking water. Since LCPs formed under different water chemistry possesses different crystal structures, their hydrodynamic behaviors could be significantly different in flowing water. In this study, flushing experiments and microscopic observations were employed to investigate the release of cerussite (PbCO₃), hydrocerussite (Pb₃(CO₃)₂(OH)₂), chloropyromorphite (Pb₅(PO₄)₃Cl), and lead dioxide (scrutinyite α-PbO₂/plattnerite β-PbO₂), the four LCPs commonly found in the drinking water distribution system. Under the same flow rate, particulate lead release showed the following trend: lead dioxide > cerussite ∼ chloropyromorphite > hydrocerussite. In the range of 1-10 L/min, a higher flow rate enhanced the release of cerussite, chloropyromorphite, and lead dioxide, while the release of hydrocerussite was not significantly affected, likely due to its platelike crystal structure that reduced the shear force exerted by the flowing water. The detachments of visible cerussite and chloropyromorphite particles were captured using a digital microscope at flow rates of 8.0 and 8.2 L/min, and the shear forces causing their detachments were determined to be 5.8 × 10^-11 and 3.1 × 10^-10 N, respectively, using computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Our study demonstrated that crystal structure could be an important factor affecting the detachment of LCPs and CFD could be a useful tool to characterize their hydrodynamic behaviors.

Prediction of lead leaching from galvanic corrosion of lead-containing components in copper pipe drinking water supply systems

Galvanic corrosion is one of the main reasons for pipe degradation and lead contamination in drinking water systems. The electrical connection of dissimilar metals in corrosive tap water accelerates the dissolution rate of lead from leaded materials. This paper reports an electrochemistry based model to predict lead leaching from a copper pipe fitted with leaded connections. The corrosion of lead at the metal-electrolyte interface depends on the charge transfer and the electric field across the interface. The electric potential field and the mass transport process are dynamically coupled for corrosion propagation in stagnant water; they are respectively governed by the conservation of charge and reactant mass. Using polarization parameters for the electrodes as a function of concentration of oxidizing agents, a dynamic electrochemical model is developed to predict lead leaching from galvanic corrosion. The predicted lead and copper leaching curves are in good agreement with the experimental data for a lead-soldered coupled copper pipe, a brass valve coupled copper pipe, and a pure copper pipe. The findings offer a quantitative understanding on galvanic corrosion in drinking water supply systems and a practical modeling framework for prediction of lead leaching in tap water as a function of stagnation time.

Human Health Risk Assessment of Trace Elements in Tap Water and the Factors Influencing Its Value

(1) Background: The influence of tap water fittings construction and internal pipe-work on the release of heavy metals was investigated. (2) Methods: A statistical approach was applied for the examination of the chemistry of tap water in five different cities in southern Poland. In total, 500 samples were collected (from 100 to 101 samples in each city). The sampling protocol included information on the construction of the water supply network and the physicochemical parameters of measured tap water. (3) Results: The statistical analysis allowed to extract the crucial factors that affect the concentrations of trace elements in tap water. Age of connection, age of tap, age of pipe-work as well as material of connection, material of pipe-work and material of appliance reveal the most significant variability of concentrations observed for As, Al, Cd, Cu, Fe, Mn, Pb, and Zn. Calculated cancer risks (CRs) decrease with the following order of analysed elements Ni > Cd > Cr > As = Pb and can be associated with the factors that affect the appearance of such elements in tap water. The hazard index (HI) was evaluated as negligible in 59.1% of the sampling points and low in 40.1% for adults. For children, a high risk was observed in 0.2%, medium in 9.0%, negligible in 0.4%, and low for the rest of the analysed samples.

Controlling lead release due to uniform and galvanic corrosion - An evaluation of silicate-based inhibitors

Silicates have been added to drinking water for decades, both to sequester iron/manganese and as a corrosion control treatment for lead. But the mechanisms by which they might act to limit lead release are not well understood. We evaluated the effects of two silicate formulations on lead release due to uniform and galvanic corrosion over a wide range of pH and dissolved inorganic carbon concentrations. We compared these results to better-characterized systems, with added ortho- or polyphosphate and in an inhibitor-free control. Independent of pH, silicates did not consistently mitigate lead release due to either uniform or galvanic corrosion. Furthermore, lead carbonates appeared to determine lead solubility in the presence of sodium silicate. While silicate treatment did promote the formation of a nanometer-thick silicon layer on lead and a decrease in crystallite size at the scale surface, these changes did not inhibit lead release. But unlike polyphosphate-which is known to form soluble complexes with lead and disperse particulate metals-high ratio silicate did not exacerbate lead release. Metasilicate did exacerbate lead release, especially at pH 7 and 5 mg DIC/L; this suggests that silicate formulation may have an important effect on the dispersion of lead-rich particles.

Development of Biosorbent Derived from the Endocarp Waste of Gayo Coffee for Lead Removal in Liquid Wastewater—Effects of Chemical Activators

This study reports the development of bio-based adsorbent by utilizing coffee endocarp (CE) waste as a raw material for lead (Pb) removal from liquid wastewater. The effect of NaOH and HCl as activation precursors on the characteristics and performance of the resulting adsorbents was investigated. The prepared adsorbents were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Surface Area Analyzer (SAA). The characterization results confirm the positive role of the activation by either NaOH or HCl in enhancing the surface properties of the resulting adsorbents. The chemical activations removed most of impurities leading to smoother surface, pore size enlargement and enhanced surface area to pore volume ratio, which result in an enhanced adsorption capacity and Pb removal efficiency. The raw adsorbent shows 57.7% of Pb removal efficiency and sorption capacity of 174.4 mg/g. On the other hand, after the chemical treatment using HCl and NaOH, the Pb removal efficiencies increased up to 63.9% and 89.86%, with adsorption capacity of 193 and 271.58 mg/g, respectively. Though both activated sorbents demonstrate better adsorption performance compared to the non-activated CE, overall results reveal that the NaOH-activated sorbent offers better characteristic and performance than the HCl-activated sorbent.

Machine Learning and Simulation-Optimization Coupling for Water Distribution Network Contamination Source Detection

This paper presents and explores a novel methodology for solving the problem of a water distribution network contamination event, which includes determining the exact source of contamination, the contamination start and end times and the injected contaminant concentration. The methodology is based on coupling a machine learning algorithm for predicting the most probable contamination sources in a water distribution network with an optimization algorithm for determining the values of contamination start time, end time and injected contaminant concentration for each predicted node separately. Two slightly different algorithmic frameworks were constructed which are based on the mentioned methodology. Both algorithmic frameworks utilize the Random Forest algorithm for classification of top source contamination node candidates, with one of the frameworks directly using the stochastic fireworks optimization algorithm to determine the contamination start time, end time and injected contaminant concentration for each predicted node separately. The second framework uses the Random Forest algorithm for an additional regression prediction of each top node’s start time, end time and contaminant concentration and is then coupled with the deterministic global search optimization algorithm MADS. Both a small sized (92 potential sources) network with perfect sensor measurements and a medium sized (865 potential sources) benchmark network with fuzzy sensor measurements were used to explore the proposed frameworks. Both algorithmic frameworks perform well and show robustness in determining the true source node, start and end times and contaminant concentration, with the second framework being extremely efficient on the fuzzy sensor measurement benchmark network.

Ferrate(VI) pretreatment of water containing natural organic matter, bromide, and iodide: A potential strategy to control soluble lead release from PbO2(s)

Lead dioxide (PbO₂(s)) is a corrosion product of lead-containing plumbing materials in water distribution pipelines. The presence of reductants in water could cause the release of soluble lead (mainly Pb(II)) from PbO₂(s). Lead in drinking water is detrimental to public health. This paper presents the first application of ferrate (Fe^VIO₄^2-, Fe(VI)) to decreasing the generation of soluble lead in water containing PbO₂(s) and common reducing constituents (e.g., natural organic matter (NOM), iodide (I^-), and bromide (Br^-)) at different pH conditions (i.e., 6.0, 7.0, and 8.0). The released soluble lead from PbO₂(s) was found to be dominantly controlled by NOM in water, via the redox dissolution of PbO₂(s) and the reduction of PbO₂(s) by reducing moieties of NOM. The feasibility of both processes increased when pH decreased. The I^- and Br^- in water played minor roles in generating soluble lead. Fe(VI) reacted with reducing functional groups of NOM, as determined by ¹³C nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy. Water pretreatment with Fe(VI) inhibited the reaction of NOM with PbO₂(s) and therefore, caused lower soluble lead concentrations compared to water samples without Fe(VI) treatment. This study indicates that Fe(VI) pretreatment is a potential approach to controlling soluble lead in drinking water.

Unraveling the Causes of Excess Lead in Drinking Water Supply Systems of Densely Populated High-Rise Buildings in Hong Kong

Excess concentrations of lead (Pb) were found in tap water from drinking water supply systems of high-rise buildings in 11 public rental housing (PRH) estates in Hong Kong, posing threats to public health. The copper supply lines are fitted with lead-soldered connections and brass fixtures and faucets. The causes of excess lead are studied through field sampling on occupied households, experiments on prototype supply chains, and 3D numerical modeling. The tap water lead concentration of 129 households in the PRH estates was sampled using a specially designed protocol, revealing the highly variable lead concentration variations induced by sources along the supply chain. Lead concentration variation at consumer tap and its relation with various lead sources are studied in a full-scale test rig. A 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) model is successfully developed to interpret the time variation of lead concentrations at the consumer tap. Model predictions of the complex variation of dissolved lead are in good agreement with data and confirm lead solder in copper pipe connections as a major cause of the "lead water" episode in Hong Kong. The CFD calculations demonstrate the importance of turbulent diffusion and shear flow dispersion in the modeling of lead; the use of a "plug flow" approximation can result in significant overestimation of lead concentration. The findings provide a basis for lead risk assessment of different water sampling strategies in densely populated high-rise buildings in Megacities.

Lead release in drinking water resulting from galvanic corrosion in three-metal systems consisting of lead, copper and stainless steel

Lead pipe has been banned in the drinking water distribution system in most countries since 1980s. Although water authorities around the world have attempted to replace all remaining lead pipes in service, pipe replacement was often hindered by high cost and lack of access to private premises. Hence, partial replacement has become a common scenario where portions of lead pipes remain in the system. When the lead pipe is connected to two other different metallic materials at both ends, two different galvanic couples can form simultaneously in this three-metal system. The release of lead resulting from galvanic corrosion in such three-metal systems consisting of lead (Pb), copper (Cu) and stainless steel (SS) with three different configurations, namely Cu-SS-Pb, SS-Cu-Pb and Cu-Pb-SS was investigated in this study. The results showed that when the materials are arranged in order of reduction potential as in SS-Cu-Pb configuration, lead release was the highest. A more fluent electron transport across the system was proposed based on the direction and magnitude of galvanic currents measured at each galvanic couple.

Effects of hydroxyapatite@poly-lactide-co-glycolide nanoparticles combined with Pb and Cd on liver and kidney parenchyma after the reconstruction of mandibular bone defects

Reconstruction of bone defects with the use of biomaterials based on hydroxyapatite (HAp) has been a popular approach in medicine and dentistry. Most often the process of new bone formation is analyzed with the focus only on the region of the reconstructed defect. The effects of the therapy on distant organs have been rarely reported in the literature, especially not in synergy with the exposure to other bioactive chemicals. In this study, reconstruction of the mandibular bone in vivo using poly-lactide-co-glycolide-coated HAp (HAp/PLGA) nanoparticles was monitored with a simultaneous histopathological analysis of distant organs, specifically kidney and liver parenchyma. Heavy metals are among the most prominent environmental pollutants and have a high affinity for the crystal lattice of HAp, where they get incorporated by replacing calcium ions. Lead (Pb) and cadmium (Cd) are two such metals that can be found in food, water and air, but are most commonly present in cigarette smoke, the frequent contaminant of hospital settings in the developing world. The influence of their presence in the repaired bone on the content of calcium (Ca) in the reconstructed bone defect was analyzed, along with the histopathological changes in liver and kidneys. A study performed on 24 female Wistar rats demonstrated that the reconstruction of mandibular bone defects using HAp/PLGA particles induced an increase in the content of Ca in the newly created bone without causing any pathological changes to the liver and the kidneys. The presence of Pb and Cd in the defects reconstructed with HAp/PLGA nanoparticles impeded the regenerative process and led to a severe and irreversible damage to the liver and kidney parenchyma.

Evaluation of lead release potential of new premise plumbing materials

Premise plumbing materials such as pipes, valves, fittings, and faucets are made of various materials, including plastic, stainless steel, copper, and brass/bronze. Although lead pipe has been banned for its use in drinking water supply by most countries in the 1980s, lead is still commonly used as an additive in many plumbing materials for its flexibility and malleability. Certified leaching tests for plumbing materials are usually conducted using relatively mild solutions over short periods which may not reveal the true risk of lead exposure when these materials are used. The objective of this study is to investigate the extents of lead release from commonly used premise plumbing materials into drinking water. The maximum lead leaching potential for pluming material was operationally determined using high strength acidic EDTA solutions (pH 4, EDTA = 100 mg/L) for a stagnation time of 3 days for a total period of up to 1 month. Lead leaching from each plumbing material was also evaluated using reconstituted tap water. Brass- and bronze-based plumbing materials were found to release dangerous levels of lead. Surface lead weight percentage obtained using SEM-EDX and lead weight percentages of the material body obtained using strong acid digestion were found to positively correlate with lead release. A re-examination of the appropriateness of current certified leaching tests and a more stringent regulation on the use of lead as an additive for plumbing materials should be considered.
