Oxalate modification enabled advanced phosphate removal of nZVI: In Situ formed surface ternary complex and altered multi-stage adsorption process

Nano zero-valent iron (nZVI) is a promising phosphate adsorbent for advanced phosphate removal. However, the rapid passivation of nZVI and the low activity of adsorption sites seriously limit its phosphate removal performance, accounting for its inapplicability to meet the emission criteria of 0.1 mg P/L phosphate. In this study, we report that the oxalate modification can inhibit the passivation of nZVI and alter the multi-stage phosphate adsorption mechanism by changing the adsorption sites. As expected, the stronger anti-passivation ability of oxalate modified nZVI (OX-nZVI) strongly favored its phosphate adsorption. Interestingly, the oxalate modification endowed the surface Fe(III) sites with the lowest chemisorption energy and the fastest phosphate adsorption ability than the other adsorption sites, by in situ forming a Fe(III)-phosphate-oxalate ternary complex, therefore enabling an advanced phosphate removal process. At an initial phosphate concentration of 1.00 mg P/L, pH of 6.0 and a dosage of 0.3 g/L of adsorbents, OX-nZVI exhibited faster phosphate removal rate (0.11 g/mg/min) and lower residual phosphate level (0.02 mg P/L) than nZVI (0.055 g/mg/min and 0.19 mg P/L). This study sheds light on the importance of site manipulation in the development of high-performance adsorbents, and offers a facile surface modification strategy to prepare superior iron-based materials for advanced phosphate removal.

Phytoremediation performance of mixed planting patterns and the associated rhizosphere microbial community in pilot-scale constructed wetlands

Phytoremediation is a low-cost, environmentally friendly, and sustainable technology that can utilize vegetation and microorganisms to avoid eutrophication and purifying water environment. The ability of five different living aquatic plants of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and chemical oxygen demand (CODcr) removal were investigated in pilot scale constructed wetlands (CWs). Aquatic plant mixes significantly improved CODcr removal and plant tissue uptake of nitrogen and phosphorus. The wetland performance of mixed plantings was also influenced by the specific species. The mixed planting of Phragmites australi, Nymphaea Colorado and Myriophyllum verticillatum (PNM)When assessing pollutant removal in CWs, PNM performed better within mixtures, a possible synergistic effect, while TNV Typha orientalis, Nymphaea Colorado, and Vallisneria natans (TNV) performed poorly, a possible antagonist effect. Effects of marine eutrophication environment on microbial corrosion: A review

Metal materials undergo severe corrosion in eutrophic environments. The effect of DO decay stimulated by high concentrations of nitrogen and phosphorus pollutants on microorganisms leads to the coupling of electrochemical and microbial corrosion processes. However, there are few studies on microbial corrosion mechanisms in eutrophic environments. This article discusses the corrosive factors of marine eutrophication, summarizes the impact of marine eutrophication on microbial corrosion and the potential mechanisms, including aerobic biofilm corrosion, aerobic & anaerobic mixed biofilm corrosion, and anaerobic microbial electron transfer corrosion, and expounds on the research methods for microbial corrosion of materials serving in estuarine areas prone to pollution. Microbial prevention and control, such as nutrient restriction and microbial interspecies competition, are of research value in the field of green protection. Microbial corrosion mechanisms studies in marine eutrophication environments are significant for environment monitor development, water intake and algae control technologies, and corrosion protection in polluted environments.

Transport processes of dissolved and particulate nitrogen and phosphorus over urban road surface during rainfall runoff

Nutrient pollutants serve as indicative pollutants in urban stormwater runoff, and usually coexist and transport in particulate and dissolved phase in runoff, which is complex and crucial for effective pollution control. In this study, nitrogen and phosphorus runoff samples were collected during various natural rainfall events to explore its transport process over urban road surface during rainfall runoff. The results showed that nitrogen mainly exists in the dissolved phase (mean proportion: 62.04 %), while phosphorus mainly exists in the particulate phase (mean proportion: 65.58 %). More nitrogen and phosphorus are present and transported in dissolved phase in initial rainfall runoff over urban roads. Nutrient concentration changes during rainfall events were influenced by factors such as rainfall intensity and surface runoff, resulting in multiple peaks. Transport rate peak and concentration peak did not coincide. The proportion of dissolved total nitrogen in the runoff process ranged mainly between 40 % and 80 %, and the proportion of dissolved ammonia was distributed between 60 % and 100 %. The proportion of dissolved phosphorus was more evenly distributed across each proportion interval. Influenced by the differences in phase proportions, first flush processes of nitrogen and phosphorus are not the same. Urban stormwater management measures should prioritize both the initial concentration peaks and the peaks in nutrient transport rates during rainfall. This approach is essential for enhancing the efficiency of stormwater pollutant collection and treatment.

Trade-offs between nitrogen and phosphorus removal with floodplain remediation in agricultural streams

To improve water quality and reduce instream erosion, floodplain remediation along agricultural streams can provide multiple ecosystem services through biogeochemical and fluvial processes. During floodplain inundation, longer water residence time and periodic anoxic conditions can lead to increased nitrogen (N) removal through denitrification but also mobilization of phosphorus (P), impeding overall water quality improvements. To investigate the capacity for N and P processing in remediated streams, we measured potential denitrification and nitrous oxide production and yields together with potential P desorption and P fractions in floodplain and stream sediments in ten catchments in Sweden. Sediment P desorption was measured as equilibrium P concentration, using P isotherm incubations. Denitrification rates were measured with the acetylene inhibition method. Sediment nutrient process rates were combined with hydrochemical monitoring along remediated streams and their paired upstream control reaches of trapezoidal shape to determine the impact of floodplains on water quality. The correlation between floodplain denitrification rates and P desorption (r = 0.53, p = 0.02) revealed a trade-off between soluble reactive P (SRP) and nitrate removal, driven by stream water connectivity to floodplains. Nitrous oxide production was not affected by differences in P processing, but nitrous oxide yields decreased with higher denitrification and P desorption. The release of SRP from floodplains (0.03 ± 0.41 mg P kg-1 day-1) was significantly lower than from trapezoidal stream banks (0.38 ± 0.37 mg P kg-1 day-1), predicted by long-term SRP concentrations in stream water and floodplain inundation frequency. The overall impact of SRP release from floodplains on stream SRP concentrations in remediated reaches was limited. However, the remediated reaches showing increased stream SRP concentrations were also frequently inundated and had higher labile P content and coarse soil texture in floodplain sediments. To fully realize the potential for water quality improvements with constructed floodplains in agricultural streams, the promotion of denitrification through increased inundation should be balanced against the risk of P release from sediments, particularly in streams with high SRP inputs.

REVIEW: Evidence supporting the 'preparation for oxidative stress' (POS) strategy in animals in their natural environment

Hypometabolism is a common strategy employed by resilient species to withstand environmental stressors that would be life-threatening for other organisms. Under conditions such as hypoxia/anoxia, temperature and salinity stress, or seasonal changes (e.g. hibernation, estivation), stress-tolerant species down-regulate pathways to decrease energy expenditures until the return of less challenging conditions. However, it is with the return of these more favorable conditions and the reactivation of basal metabolic rates that a strong increase of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species (RONS) occurs, leading to oxidative stress. Over the last few decades, cases of species capable of enhancing antioxidant defenses during hypometabolic states have been reported across taxa and in response to a variety of stressors. Interpreted as an adaptive mechanism to counteract RONS formation during tissue hypometabolism and reactivation, this strategy was coined "Preparation for Oxidative Stress" (POS). Laboratory experiments have confirmed that over 100 species, spanning 9 animal phyla, apply this strategy to endure harsh environments. However, the challenge remains to confirm its occurrence in the natural environment and its wide applicability as a key survival element, through controlled experimentation in field and in natural conditions. Under such conditions, numerous confounding factors may complicate data interpretation, but this remains the only approach to provide an integrative look at the evolutionary aspects of ecophysiological adaptations. In this review, we provide an overview of representative cases where the POS strategy has been demonstrated among diverse species in natural environmental conditions, discussing the strengths and weaknesses of these results and conclusions.

Treatment of agricultural wastewater using microalgae: A review

The rapid development of agriculture has led to a large amount of wastewater, which poses a great threat to environmental safety. Microalgae, with diverse species, nutritional modes and cellular status, can adapt well in agricultural wastewater and absorb nutrients and remove pollutants effectively. Besides, after treatment of agricultural wastewater, the accumulated biomass of microalgae has broad applications, such as fertilizer and animal feed. This paper reviewed the current progresses and further perspectives of microalgae-based agricultural wastewater treatment. The characteristics of agricultural wastewater have been firstly introduced; Then the microalgal strains, cultivation modes, cellular status, contaminant metabolism, cultivation systems and biomass applications of microalgae for wastewater treatment have been summarized; At last, the bottlenecks in the development of the microalgae treatment methods, as well as recommendations for optimizing the adaptability of microalgae to wastewater in terms of wastewater pretreatment, microalgae breeding, and microalgae-bacterial symbiosis systems were discussed. This review would provide references for the future developments of microalgae-based agricultural wastewater treatment.

Long-term prediction of algal chlorophyll based on empirical models and the machine learning approach in relation to trophic variation in Juam Reservoir, Korea

This study analyzed spatiotemporal variation and long-term trends in water quality indicators and trophic state conditions in an Asian temperate reservoir, Juam Reservoir (JR), and developed models that forecast algal chlorophyll (CHL-a) over a period of 30 years, 1993-2022. The analysis revealed that there were longitudinal gradients in water quality indicators along the reservoir, with notable influences from tributaries and seasonal variations in nutrient regimes and suspended solids. The empirical model showed phosphorus was found to be the key determinant of algal biomass, while suspended solids played a significant role in regulating water transparency. The trophic state indices indicated varying levels of trophic status, ranging from mesotrophic to eutrophic. Eutrophic states were particularly observed in zones after the summer monsoons, indicating a heightened risk of algal blooms, which were more prevalent in flood years. The analysis of trophic state index deviation suggested that phosphorus availability strongly influences the reservoir trophic status, with several episodes of non-algal turbidity at each site during Mon. Increases in non-algal turbidity were more prevalent during the monsoon in flood years. This study also highlighted overall long-term trends in certain water quality parameters, albeit with indications of shifting pollution sources towards non-biodegradable organic matter. According to the machine learning tests, a random forest (RF) model strongly predicted CHL-a (R2 = 0.72, p < 0.01), except for algal biomass peaks (>60 μg/L), compared to all other models. Overall, our research suggests that CHL-a and trophic variation are primarily regulated by the monsoon intensity and predicted well by the machine learning RF model.

How much nutrient reaches a stream: Insights from a hybrid model and implications for watershed nitrogen export and removal

Excess nitrogen (N) discharged into streams and rivers degrades freshwater quality and threatens ecosystems worldwide. Land use patterns may influence riverine N export, yet the effect of location on N export and removal is not fully understood. We proposed a hybrid model to analyze N export and removal within the watersheds. The proposed model is satisfied for the riverine N modelling. The KGE and R2 are 0.75 and 0.72 in the calibration period which are 0.76 and 0.61 in the validation period. Human-impacted land use may modify the N yield in the watershed, and the net N export from built-up to the in-stream system was highest in the urbanized sub-watersheds (0.81), followed by the agricultural sub-watersheds (0.88), and forested sub-watersheds (0.96). Agricultural activities make a large contribution to the N exports in the watersheds, and the mean N input from the agricultural land use to in-stream were 2069-4353 kg km-2 yr-1. Besides, the excess inputs of N by overapplication of fertilizer and manure during the agricultural activities may increase legacy N in soil and groundwater. Biological processes for the riverine N removal may be controlled by the available substrate in the freshwater system, and temperature sensitivity of denitrification is highest in the flood seasons, especially for the human-impacted sub-watersheds. The riverine biological processes may be limited by other competitions. Our model results provide evidence that quantity and location of specific land use may control biogeochemistry within watersheds. We demonstrate the need to understand nutrient export and removal within watersheds by improving the representation of spatial patterns in existing watershed models, and we consider this study to be a new effort for the spatially explicit modeling to support land-use based N management in watersheds.

Expanding the Application of Sentinel-2 Chlorophyll Monitoring across United States Lakes

Eutrophication of inland lakes poses various societal and ecological threats, making water quality monitoring crucial. Satellites provide a comprehensive and cost-effective supplement to traditional in situ sampling. The Sentinel-2 MultiSpectral Instrument (S2 MSI) offers unique spectral bands positioned to quantify chlorophyll a, a water-quality and trophic-state indicator, along with fine spatial resolution, enabling the monitoring of small waterbodies. In this study, two algorithms-the Maximum Chlorophyll Index (MCI) and the Normalized Difference Chlorophyll Index (NDCI)-were applied to S2 MSI data. They were calibrated and validated using in situ chlorophyll a measurements for 103 lakes across the contiguous U.S. Both algorithms were tested using top-of-atmosphere reflectances (ρ t), Rayleigh-corrected reflectances (ρ s), and remote sensing reflectances (R rs ). MCI slightly outperformed NDCI across all reflectance products. MCI using ρ t showed the best overall performance, with a mean absolute error factor of 2.08 and a mean bias factor of 1.15. Conversion of derived chlorophyll a to trophic state improved the potential for management applications, with 82% accuracy using a binary classification. We report algorithm-to-chlorophyll-a conversions that show potential for application across the U.S., demonstrating that S2 can serve as a monitoring tool for inland lakes across broad spatial scales.

Nutrient reduction by eastern oysters exhibits low variability associated with reproduction, ploidy, and farm location

Enhancement of shellfish populations has long been discussed as a potential nutrient reduction tool, and eastern oyster aquaculture was recently approved as a nutrient reduction best management practice (BMP) in Chesapeake Bay, USA. This study addressed BMP-identified data gaps involving variation in nutrient concentration related to ploidy, effects of reproductive development, and a paucity of phosphorus concentration data. Diploid and triploid oysters were collected from farms in Maryland and Virginia across the typical local reproductive cycle. The nutrient concentration of tissue and shell was consistent with the currently implemented BMP. Minor variation observed in nitrogen and phosphorus concentration was within the previously reported range, for farm location, ploidy, and reproductive cycle timing. Ploidy-based differences in tissue dry weight were not observed at either farm, which contrasts with current nutrient reduction estimates. These results suggest separate crediting values for diploids and triploids may need further investigation and potential re-evaluation.

Modelling bioremediation of contaminated effluents by Ulva ohnoi. - A predictive perspective

Ulva spp. are tolerant to salinity variations and exhibit easy acclimation, playing an essential role in the depollution of aquatic ecosystems precisely due to their high efficiency in absorbing and accumulating nutrients. For this reason, Ulva spp. becomes an attractive solution for recovering areas that suffer the impacts of problems such as the eutrophication of anthropogenic origin. In addition to being a promising alternative for the blue bioeconomy, it can contribute to the sustainability of economic activities in coastal areas. Therefore, the present study aimed to develop and elucidate the behavior of Ulva ohnoi using predictive surface response models. The algae were grown under different concentrations of nutrient and salinity levels, as predicted by the experimental design, and it was evaluated according to the potential of the biomass to absorb the nutrients, as well as its photosynthetic performance and biochemical parameters. Our study confirmed the high efficiency and preference of Ulva ohnoi in the absorption of nitrogen dissolved in the medium in the form of NH4+ and that salinity is an essential factor in the dynamics and speed of ammonium absorption. The absorption of orthophosphate by U. ohnoi is reverted to the culture medium when subjected to long-term cultivation. This process was more intense because of low salinity, even at conditions of availability of the compound. The 3D-models of response surfaces elucidate the behavior of Ulva ohnoi, attributing a correlation between nutrient availability and salinity and the biological behavior of the species. In view of what is exposed by these models, as well as the effects of saline distribution along the Lagoon, the following regions of the lagoon are suggested: Center-North, Center and South - as potential areas for the implementation of bioremediation projects with Ulva ohnoi.

Quantification of Major Inorganic Contaminants in a Mediterranean Coastal Lagoon with a Large Dystrophic Crisis

In August 2021, the Mar Menor, a saltwater lagoon located in the Region of Murcia (Spain), suffered a tragic environmental episode of dystrophic crisis and anoxia. The appearance of numerous dead fish in different areas of the lagoon over the course of days put all the authorities and the population of the area on alert. This paper shows a case study of what happened in the lagoon in terms of the presence of the most common inorganic pollutants. Measurements of the concentration of nitrogen species, phosphates and main heavy metals were carried out at different sampling sites in the Mar Menor from May 2021 to November 2022. Chemical analyses were carried out for each of the species under study. These analyses provide valuable information about the dystrophic crisis caused by a classic eutrophication process that began with the excessive nutrient input into the Mar Menor. Ion chromatography and Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometry (ICP-MS) were used as instrumentation for the quantification of these samples. The species whose values were greatly increased after the tragic episode described above were nitrates. The concentration varied significantly at the different sampling sites throughout the study. On the last sampling date, decreased concentrations of all the species were measured at each of the sampling sites, coinciding with the apparent good state of the lagoon.

Knowledge-guided mixture density network for chlorophyll-a retrieval and associated pixel-by-pixel uncertainty assessment in optically variable inland waters

Machine learning has been increasingly used to retrieve chlorophyll-a (Chl-a) in optically variable waters. However, without the guidance of physical principles or expert knowledge, machine learning may produce biased mapping relationships, or waste considerable time searching for physically infeasible hyperparameter domains. In addition, most Chl-a retrieval models cannot evaluate retrieval uncertainty when ground observations are not available, and the retrieval uncertainty is crucial for understanding the model limitations and evaluating the reliability of retrieval results. In this study, we developed a novel knowledge-guided mixture density network to retrieve Chl-a in optically variable inland waters based on Sentinel-3 Ocean and Land Color Instrument (OLCI) imagery. The proposed method embedded prior knowledge derived from spectral shape classification into the mixture density network. Compared to another deterministic model, the knowledge-guided mixture density network outputted the conditional distribution of Chl-a given an input spectrum, enabling us to estimate the optimal retrieval and the associated uncertainty. The proposed method showed favorable correspondence with the field Chl-a, with root mean square error (RMSE) of 6.56 μg/L, and mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) of 43.64 %. Calibrated against Sentinel-3 OLCI spectrum, the proposed method also performed well when applied to field spectrum (RMSE = 4.58 μg/L, MAPE = 72.70 %), suggesting its effectiveness and good generalization. The proposed method provided the standard deviation of each estimated Chl-a, which enabled us to inspect the reliability of the estimated results and understand the model limitations. Overall, the proposed method improved the Chl-a retrieval in terms of model accuracy and uncertainty evaluation, providing a more comprehensive Chl-a observation of inland waters.

Performance evaluation of deep learning based stream nitrate concentration prediction model to fill stream nitrate data gaps at low-frequency nitrate monitoring basins

Accurate and frequent nitrate estimates can provide valuable information on the nitrate transport dynamics. The study aimed to develop a data-driven modeling framework to estimate daily nitrate concentrations at low-frequency nitrate monitoring sites using the daily nitrate concentration and stream discharge information of a neighboring high-frequency nitrate monitoring site. A Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) based deep learning (DL) modeling framework was developed to predict daily nitrate concentrations. The DL modeling framework performance was compared with two well-established statistical models, including LOADEST and WRTDS-Kalman, in three selected basins in Iowa, USA: Des Moines, Iowa, and Cedar River. The developed DL model performed well with NSE >0.70 and KGE >0.70 for 67% and 79% nitrate monitoring sites, respectively. DL and WRTDS-Kalman models performed better than the LOADEST in nitrate concentration and load estimation for all low-frequency sites. The average NSE performance of the DL model in daily nitrate estimation is 20% higher than that of the WRTDS-Kalman model at 18 out of 24 sites (75%). The WRTDS-Kalman model showed unrealistic fluctuations in the estimated daily nitrate time series when the model received limited observed nitrate data (less than 50) for simulation. The DL model indicated superior performance in winter months' nitrate prediction (60% of cases) compared to WRTDS-Kalman models (33% of cases). The DL model also better represented the exceedance days from the USEPA maximum contamination level (MCL). Both the DL and WRTDS-Kalman models demonstrated similar performance in annual stream nitrate load estimation, and estimated values are close to actual nitrate loads.

Impact of treated effluent discharges on fish communities: Evaluating the effects of pollution on fish distribution, abundance and environmental integrity

Domestic effluent discharges change water quality and habitat conditions in urban watersheds, though less known about how these impact fish communities. This work assessed the impact of chronic wastewater pollution on biotic and abiotic factors in six urban streams in Patagonia. Stream hydrological features, water quality conditions and fish communities were analyzed during a one-year period. The oxygen saturation and water velocity showed significant differences between up- and downstream locations of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs). Chemical parameters revealed an eutrophication process downstream of the WWTP input, with increased biological oxygen demanding (BOD), nitrogen, ammonium, soluble reactive phosphorus, and chlorophyll a concentrations, indicating nutrient enrichment that can lead to a potential for algal growth. The study highlighted significant differences in fish abundance, density, and biomass between reaches upstream (Control) and downstream (Impacted) of the WWTP discharges, suggesting a detrimental impact on fish communities. While juveniles, females and males of the native Catfish (Hatcheria macraei) preferred pristine zones, juveniles and males of the native Perch (Percichthys spp.) displayed preferences for areas with higher nutrient levels. Exotic species like Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) (juveniles, females and males) preferred low-nutrient, high-quality habitats, while juveniles, females and males of Brown Trout (Salmo trutta) were found near the WWTP facilities. Although some previous studies have suggested that nutrient enrichment might benefit fish, our findings highlight the negative impacts on fish abundance and distribution due to WWTPs. Fish species appear to demonstrate certain degrees of tolerance to pollution, with larger individuals displaying greater tolerance. Although the pollution levels may did not result in an irreversible collapse of the system, the absence of fish in the stream with the highest pollution level would indicate an ongoing environmental deterioration. Anthropogenic activities, especially municipal effluent discharge, exacerbate environmental degradation and demand specific management actions to maintain ecosystem integrity.

Space-time cube uncovers spatiotemporal patterns of basin ecological quality and their relationship with water eutrophication

Maintaining an optimal eco-environment is important for sustainable regional development. However, existing methods are inadequate for examining both spatial and temporal dimensions. Here, we propose a systematic procedure for spatiotemporal examination of the eco-environment using the space-time cube (STC) model and describe a preliminary investigation of the coupling relationships between basin ecological quality and water eutrophication in upstream of the Han River basin between 2000 and 2020. The STC model considers the temporal dimension as the third dimension in calculations. We first categorized the basin into three sub-watershed types: forest, cultivated land, and artificial surface. Subsequently, the ecological quality and driving factors were assessed and identified using the remote sensing ecological index (RSEI) and Geodetector method, respectively. The findings indicated that the forest basin and artificial surface basin had the highest and lowest ecological quality, respectively. The spatiotemporal cold spots of ecological quality during the past 20 years were mostly located in the vicinity of reservoirs, rivers, and artificial surface areas. Human activity, precipitation, and the percentage of cultivated land were other important driving factors in the artificial surface, forest, and cultivated land sub-watersheds, respectively, in addition to the dominant factors of elevation and temperature. The results also indicated that when the ecological quality degraded to a certain extent, water eutrophication was significantly coupled with the ecological quality of the catchments. The findings of this study are useful for ecological restoration and sustainable river basin development.

Influence of land use on spatial distribution of mobile phosphorus forms in the sediment of a tropical semi-arid reservoir

Changes in land use and land cover influence the transport of nutrients, mainly phosphorus (P), to aquatic ecosystems. P can be available in the water column to primary producers' assimilation or be stored in different forms in limnic sediment. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the impact of land use and land cover on the spatial distribution of phosphorus forms in the sediment of a tropical semi-arid reservoir. We hypothesize that agriculture, exposed soil and the presence of floodable vegetation increase the amount of mobile phosphorus in the sediment and the sediment closer to the dam show a greater amount of mobile phosphorus due to the confluence of the flows. The classification of land use and land cover was carried out through supervised analysis at the level of the reservoir's drainage basin and area of influence. Sediment samples from the reservoir were collected at four different sampling points within the influence of two sub-basins. P forms were obtained through chemical fractionation of these sediment samples along the reservoir. Sparse Caatinga was the predominant land cover in the drainage basin and in the influence area, accounting for >50 % of these areas. This land cover represents a risk for nutrient transport to aquatic environments. The sediment samples from Boqueirão reservoir exhibited a high amount of phosphorus, mainly in the mobile forms. These forms were heterogeneously distributed throughout the reservoir. Agriculture activities, exposed soil, and floodable vegetation, influence the distribution and increase of mobile forms of phosphorus in the reservoir sediment. This suggests the need for specific strategies for manage these activities properly. Additionally, the sediment closest to the dam showed a lower amount of mobile phosphorus compared to samples further upstream.

Improving water quality in a hypereutrophic lake and tributary through agricultural nutrient mitigation: A Multi-year monitoring analysis

Anthropogenic eutrophication remains a critical global issue, significantly impacting surface water quality. Numerous regions have implemented beneficial management practices to combat agricultural nonpoint pollution, often evaluating efficacy at the field scale, but not downstream. In this study, we conducted an extensive, 11-year (2010-2020), all-season, weekly monitoring program in a small, shallow, hypereutrophic lake and main tributary located in a cold climate, northern temperate zone, within a predominantly agricultural-forested mesoscale watershed. The monitoring took place before and after the implementation of field-scale agricultural nutrient mitigation measures in the catchment, allowing assessment of changes over time in the downstream tributary and lake. We analyzed long-term trends and temporal change points for nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, aquatic trophic status, and nutrient stoichiometric ratios. The results revealed significant reductions in nitrogen and phosphorus concentrations, improved lake trophic status from hypereutrophic to eutrophic, and an increase in total nitrogen : total phosphorus ratios following the implementation of field-scale agricultural nutrient mitigation measures. Notably, both the lake and its main tributary exhibited significant temporal change points for these parameters. Our findings offer evidence of a relatively rapid, positive effect of the implementation of field-scale agricultural nutrient mitigation measures contributing to subsequent improvements in downstream water quality.

Unlocking the potential of biosurfactants: Production, applications, market challenges, and opportunities for agro-industrial waste valorization

Biosurfactants are eco-friendly compounds with unique properties and promising potential as sustainable alternatives to chemical surfactants. The current review explores the multifaceted nature of biosurfactant production and applications, highlighting key fermentative parameters and microorganisms able to convert carbon-containing sources into biosurfactants. A spotlight is given on biosurfactants' obstacles in the global market, focusing on production costs and the challenges of large-scale synthesis. Innovative approaches to valorizing agro-industrial waste were discussed, documenting the utilization of lignocellulosic waste, food waste, oily waste, and agro-industrial wastewater in the segment. This strategy strongly contributes to large-scale, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly biosurfactant production, while the recent advances in waste valorization pave the way for a sustainable society.

The cost of adaptability: resource availability constrains functional stability under pulsed disturbances

Global change exposes ecosystems to changes in the frequency, magnitude, and concomitancy of disturbances, which impact the composition and functioning of these systems. Here, we experimentally evaluate the effects of salinity disturbances and eutrophication on bacterial communities from coastal ecosystems. The functional stability of these communities is critically important for maintaining water quality, productivity, and ecosystem services, such as fishery yields. Microbial functional stability can be maintained via resistance and resilience, which are reflected in genomic traits such as genome size and codon usage bias and may be linked to metabolic costs. However, little is known about the mechanisms that select these traits under varying nutrient regimes. To study the impact of pulsed disturbances on community assembly and functioning depending on metabolic costs, we performed a 41-day pulse disturbance experiment across two levels of resource availability. Our setup triggered stochastic community re-assembly processes in all treatments. In contrast, we observed consistent and resource availability-dependent patterns of superordinate community functioning and structural patterns, such as functional resistance in response to disturbances, genomic trait distributions, and species diversity. Predicted genomic traits reflected the selection for taxa possessing resistant- and resilience-related traits, particularly under high nutrient availability. Our findings are a step toward unraveling the compositional and genomic underpinnings of functional resistance in microbial communities after exposure to consecutive pulse disturbances. Our work demonstrates how resource availability alleviates metabolic constraints on resistance and resilience, and this has important consequences for predicting water quality and ecosystem productivity of environments exposed to global change.

IMPORTANCE

Understanding the communities' responses to disturbances is a prerequisite to predicting ecosystem dynamics and, thus, highly relevant considering global change. Microbial communities play key roles in numerous ecosystem functions and services, and the large diversity, rapid growth, and phenotypic plasticity of microorganisms are thought to allow high resistance and resilience. While potential metabolic costs associated with adaptations to fluctuating environments have been debated, little evidence supports trade-offs between resource availability, resistance, and resilience. Here, we experimentally assessed the compositional and functional responses of an aquatic microbial model community to disturbances and systematically manipulated resource availability. Our results demonstrate that the capacity to tolerate environmental fluctuations is constrained by resource availability and reflected in the selection of genomic traits.

A multi-criteria decision framework for circular wastewater systems in emerging megacities of the Global South

Lima faces increasing water stress due to demographic growth, climate change and outdated water management infrastructure. Moreover, its highly centralized wastewater management system is currently unable to recover water or other resources. Hence, the primary aim of this study is to identify suitable wastewater treatment alternatives for both eutrophication mitigation and indirect potable reuse (IPR). For eutrophication mitigation, we examined MLE, Bardenpho, Step-feed, HF-MBR, and FS-MBR. For IPR, we considered secondary treatment+UF + RO + AOP or MBR + RO + AOP. These alternatives form part of a WWTP network at a district level, aiding Lima's pursuit of a circular economy approach. This perspective allows reducing environmental impacts through resource recovery, making the system more resilient to disasters and future water shortages. The methods used to assess these scenarios were Life Cycle Assessment for the environmental dimension; Life Cycle Costing for the economic perspective; and Multi-Criteria Decision Analysis to integrate both the quantitative tools aforementioned and qualitative criteria for social and techno-operational dimensions, which combined, strengthen the decision-making process. The decision-making steered towards Bardenpho for eutrophication abatement when environmental and economic criteria were prioritized or when the four criteria were equally weighted, while HF-MBR was the preferred option when techno-operational and social aspects were emphasized. In this scenario, global warming (GW) impacts ranged from 0.23 to 0.27 kg CO2eq, eutrophication mitigation varied from 6.44 to 7.29 g PO4- equivalent, and costs ranged between 0.12 and 0.17 €/m3. Conversely, HF-MBR + RO + AOP showed the best performance when IPR was sought from the outset. In the IPR scenario, GW impacts were significantly higher, at 0.46-0.51 kg CO2eq, eutrophication abatement was above 98 % and costs increased to ca. 0.44 €/m3.

A diatom-based approach to refine nutrient concentrations compatible with the "good" status of Northern Italy rivers

The identification of ecologically sound thresholds represents an important step toward improving the ecological status of rivers through appropriate measures to contain nutrient loads. The aim of the present study was to estimate phosphorus and nitrogen concentrations compatible with the achievement of the "good" ecological status of rivers from data collected in the Po River District, the largest hydrographic system in Italy. For this purpose, relationships between the diatom index used in Italy for the national assessment of the stream ecological status, the ICMi (Intercalibration Common Metric index), and total phosphorus and nitrate concentrations were analyzed using monitoring data collected between 2009 and 2019. The Po River Basin encompasses five distinct river types, from Alpine to Mediterranean to Lowlands, characterized by different anthropogenic pressures and water quality. Through regression analysis between the ICMi and nutrient concentrations, we estimated ranges of the latter values corresponding to a "good" ecological status for each river type. The resulting thresholds are far more stringent than the limits set by the Italian legislation for water quality classification. This is particularly true for total phosphorus, whose threshold value should be roughly halved for all river types. For nitrates, the results are more differentiated according to river type: the estimated thresholds are much more stringent than those currently in use for siliceous Alpine and Mediterranean rivers. Moreover, the availability of such a large database allowed also to assess the influence of one nutrient over the other on the diatom community and to highlight some critical issues in the formulation of ICMi for Mediterranean rivers.

Eutrophication increases the similarity of cyanobacterial community features in lakes and reservoirs

Eutrophication of inland waters is a mostly anthropogenic phenomenon impacting aquatic biodiversity worldwide, and might change biotic community structure and ecosystem functions. However, little is known about the patterns of cyanobacterial community variations and changes both on alpha and beta diversity levels in response to eutrophication. Here, we investigated cyanobacterial communities sampled at 140 sites from 59 lakes and reservoirs along a strong eutrophication gradient in eastern China through using CPC-IGS and 16S rRNA gene amplicon sequencing. We found that taxonomic diversity increased, but phylogenetic diversity decreased significantly along the eutrophication gradient. Both niche width and niche overlap of cyanobacteria significantly decreased from low- to high-nutrient waterbodies. Cyanobacterial community distance-decay relationship became weaker from mesotrophic to hypereutrophic waterbodies, while ecological uniqueness (i.e., local contributions to beta diversity) tended to increase in high-nutrient waterbodies. Latitude and longitude were more important in shaping cyanobacterial community structure than other environmental variables. These findings suggest that eutrophication affects alpha and beta diversity of cyanobacterial communities, leading to increasingly similar community structures in lakes and reservoirs with a higher level of eutrophication. Our work highlights how cyanobacterial communities respond to anthropogenic eutrophication and calls for an urgent need to develop conservation and management strategies to control lake eutrophication and protect freshwater biodiversity.

Effect of varying hydrologic regime on seasonal total maximum daily loads (TDML) in an agricultural watershed

Rising hypoxia due to the eutrophication of riverine ecosystems is primarily caused by the transport of nutrients. The majority of existing TMDL models cannot be efficienty applied to represent nutrient concentrations in riverine ecosystems having varying flow regimes due to seasonal differences. Accurate TMDL assessment requires nutrient loads and suspended matter estimation under varying flow regimes with minimal uncertainty. Though a large database can enhance accuracy, it can be resource intensive. This study presents the design of an innovative modeling strategy to optimize the use of existing datasets to effectively represent streamflow-load dynamics while minimizing uncertainty. The study developed an approach to assess TMDLs using six different flux models and kriging techniques (i) to enhance the accuracy of nutrient load estimation under different hydrologic regimes (flow stratifications) and (ii) to derive an optimal modeling strategy and sampling scheme for minimizing uncertainty. The flux models account for uncertainty in load prediction across varying flow strata, and the deployment of multiple load calculation procedures. Further, the proposed flux approach allows the determination of load exceedance under different TMDL scenarios aimed at minimizing uncertainty to achieve reliable load predictions. The study employed a 10-year dataset (2009-2018) consisting of daily flow data (m3/sec) and weekly data (mg/L) for nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and total suspended solids (TSS) concentrations in three distinct agricultural sites in+ the Minnesota River Watershed. The outcomes were analyzed geospatially in a Geographic Information System (GIS) environment using the kriging interpolation technique. The study recommends (i) triple stratification of flows to obtain accurate load estimates, and (ii) an optimal sampling scheme for nitrogen and phosphorous with 30.6 % and 49.8 % datapoints from high flow strata. The study outcomes are expected to contribute to the planning of economically and technically sound combinations of best management practices (BMPs) required for achieving total maximum daily loads (TMDL) in a watershed.

Cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins in the environment and water intakes: Reports, diversity of congeners, detection by mass spectrometry and their impact on health

Cyanobacteria are aquatic microorganisms of high interest for research due to the production of secondary metabolites, among which the most popular are cyanotoxins, responsible for causing severe poisoning in humans and animals through ingestion or contact with contaminated water bodies. Monitoring the number of cyanobacteria in water and concentrations of secreted cyanotoxins with the aid of sensitive and reliable methods is considered the primary action for evaluating potentially toxic blooms. There is a great diversity of methods to detect and identify these types of micro contaminants in water, differing by the degree of sophistication and information provided. Mass Spectrometry stands out for its accuracy and sensitivity in identifying toxins, making it possible to identify and characterize toxins produced by individual species of cyanobacteria, in low quantities. In this review, we seek to update some information about cyanobacterial peptides, their effects on biological systems, and the importance of the main Mass Spectrometry methods used for detection, extraction, identification and monitoring of cyanotoxins.

Removal of phosphorus by modified bentonite:polyvinylidene fluoride membrane-study of adsorption performance and mechanism

Enhanced phosphorus management, geared towards sustainability, is imperative due to its indispensability for all life forms and its close association with water bodies' eutrophication, primarily stemming from anthropogenic activities. In response to this concern, innovative technologies rooted in the circular economy are emerging, to remove and recover this vital nutrient to global food production. This research undertakes an evaluation of the dead-end filtration performance of a mixed matrix membrane composed of modified bentonite (MB) and polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) for efficient phosphorus removal from water media. The MB:PVDF membrane exhibited higher permeability and surface roughness compared to the pristine membrane, showcasing an adsorption capacity (Q) of 23.2 mgP·m-2. Increasing the adsorbent concentration resulted in a higher removal capacity (from 16.9 to 23.2 mgP·m-2) and increased solution flux (from 0.5 to 16.5 L·m-2·h-1) through the membrane. The initial phosphorus concentration demonstrates a positive correlation with the adsorption capacity of the material, while the system pressure positively influences the observed flux. Conversely, the presence of humic acid exerts an adverse impact on both factors. Additionally, the primary mechanism involved in the adsorption process is identified as the formation of inner-sphere complexes.

Fate of glyphosate in lakes with varying trophic levels and its modification by root exudates of submerged macrophytes

Accelerated eutrophication in lakes reduces the number of submerged macrophytes and alters the residues of glyphosate and its degradation products. However, the effects of submerged macrophytes on the fate of glyphosate remain unclear. We investigated eight lakes with varying trophic levels along the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River in China, of which five lakes contained either glyphosate or aminomethylphosphate (AMPA). Glyphosate and AMPA residues were significantly positively correlated with the trophic levels of lakes (P < 0.01). In lakes, glyphosate is degraded through the AMPA and sarcosine pathways. Eight shared glyphosate-degrading enzymes and genes were observed in different lake sediments, corresponding to 44 degrading microorganisms. Glyphosate concentrations in sediments were significantly higher in lakes with lower abundances of soxA (sarcosine oxidase) and soxB (sarcosine oxidase) (P < 0.05). In the presence of submerged macrophytes, oxalic and malonic acids secreted by the roots of submerged macrophytes increased the abundance of glyphosate-degrading microorganisms containing soxA or soxB (P < 0.05). These results revealed that a decrease in the number of submerged macrophytes in eutrophic lakes may inhibit glyphosate degradation via the sarcosine pathway, leading to a decrease in glyphosate degradation and an increase in glyphosate residues.

Removal and recovery of phosphate by modified oyster shell and its fertilizer application

The resource utilization of oyster shell (OS) is essential for environmental and human health because its random disposal can induce the environmental pollution and disease spread. Herein, MnFe2O4 loaded-oyster shell (OMFs) was prepared by co-precipitation method for phosphate removal and recovery. The salt etching and MnFe2O4 (MF) loading improved the adsorption performance of OS, and the maximum adsorption capacity of OMF0.02 reached 87.39 mg P/g. Phosphate adsorption was dominated by chemisorption and its rate was limited by membrane diffusion and intra-particle diffusion. Phosphate adsorption by OMF0.02 was involved with electrostatic attraction, surface precipitation and ligand exchange. 98.95 % phosphate on saturated adsorbent could be desorbed by 0.1 mol/L malic acid and 92.31 % adsorbed phosphate was released by 0.5 mol/L NaHCO3. Furthermore, phosphate adsorbed on OMF0.02 was plant-available basing on the results of water spinach growth trial. All the results implied the bright prospect of OMF0.02 in phosphate removal and recovery from wastewater.

A simulation-optimization approach based on the compound eutrophication index to identify multi-nutrient allocated load

Eutrophication with nutrient enrichment is a global marine ecosystem concern that threatens human health, economic activities, and ecosystem functions. Therefore, a nutrient load optimization method is required to help control marine eutrophication. However, eutrophication-based nutrient allocated load optimization is a multi-objective project due to a series of eutrophication pressures, such as cross-regional land-based nutrient loads and multi-nutrient regimes and ratios. In this study, a synergistic multi-nutrient control method was developed for the Bohai Sea (BS), China, which links multi-nutrient pressures with eutrophication states. Based on the eutrophication control standard, which is the second level of compound eutrophication index (CEI), the total maximum allocated loads (CEI-based TMALs) of total dissolved nitrogen (TDN), total dissolved phosphorus (TDP), and the chemical oxygen demand (COD) were calculated by a simulation-optimization approach. Using the end year of China's 13th Five-Year Plan (2020) as the reference year, 154 high load pressure jurisdictions (HLPJs) that contribute to eutrophication response segments in the BS were identified. Accordingly, practiced the optimized annual reduction rates of TDN, TDP, and COD in the HLPJs at 15 %, 11 %, and 2 % according to CEIII, respectively, the proportion of eutrophicated areas gradually decreased from 32 % in 2020 to 15 % in 2025 and might be 0 % in 2035 with ecosystem resilience in 2035. In particular, under the annual reduction rates of TDN and TDP optimized based on CEIII, the DIN/DIP molar ratio in the BS decreased to 16:1 by 2035. The simulation-optimization approach associated with the CEI-based TMALs for multi-nutrient control in this study might make implementing land-sea coordination more efficiency and marine nutrient regime stably. This can provide scientific and technological support for improving the health of coastal ecosystems.

Investigating microbial and environmental drivers of nitrification in alkaline forest soil

Ammonia oxidation is a key step in the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen, and soils are important ecosystems for nitrogen flux globally. Approximately 25% of the world's soils are alkaline. While nitrification has been studied more extensively in agricultural alkaline soils, less is known about natural, unfertilized alkaline soils. In this study, microorganisms responsible for ammonia oxidation and several environmental factors (season, temperature, ammonia concentration, and moisture content) known to affect nitrification were studied in an alkaline forest soil with a pH ranging from 8.36 to 8.77. Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (AOB), ammonia-oxidizing archaea, and comammox were present, and AOB belonging to genera Nitrosospira and Nitrosomonas, originally comprising <0.01% of the total bacterial community, responded rapidly to ammonia addition to the soil. No significant difference was observed in nitrification rates between seasons, but there was a significant difference between in situ field nitrification rates and rates in laboratory microcosms. Surprisingly, nitrification took place under many of the tested conditions, but there was no detectable increase in the abundance of any recognizable group of ammonia oxidizers. This study raises questions about the role of low-abundance microorganisms in microbial processes and of situations where zero or very low microbial growth coincides with metabolic activity. In addition, this study provides insights into nitrification in unfertilized alkaline soil and supports previous studies, which found that AOB play an important role in alkaline soils supplemented with ammonia, including agricultural ecosystems.

Looking back to move forward: Restoring vegetated canals to meet missing Water Framework Directive goals in agricultural basins

Nitrate pollution and eutrophication remain pressing issues in Europe regarding the quality of aquatic ecosystems and the safety of drinking water. Achieving water quality goals under the Water Framework Directive (WFD) has proven to be particularly challenging in agricultural catchments, where high nitrate concentrations are the main reason for the failure of many water bodies to meet a good ecological status. Canals and ditches are common man-made features of irrigated and drained landscapes and, when vegetated, have recently been identified as denitrification hotspots. By combining experimental data and GIS-based upscaling estimation, the potential capacity of the canal network to reduce nitrate loads was quantified in several scenarios differing in the level of nitrate pollution and in the extent of the canal network length where conservative management practices are implemented. The analysis was carried out in the irrigated lowlands of the Po River basin, which is the largest hydrographic system in Italy and a global hotspot for nitrogen inputs and eutrophication. Scenario simulations showed that maintaining aquatic vegetation in at least 25 % of the canal network length, selecting sites with high nitrate availability (>2.4 mg N L-1), would promote a greater potential for permanent N removal. The increased denitrification capacity would meet the load reduction target required to achieve a WFD good ecological status in waters draining into the Adriatic Sea during the spring-summer months, when the eutrophication risk is higher. Promoting denitrification in the canal network by postponing the mowing of in-stream vegetation to the end of the growing season could be an effective mitigation strategy to improve water quality in agricultural basins and contribute to achieving the WFD goals.

Towards implementing precision conservation practices in agricultural watersheds: A review of the use and prospects of spatial decision support systems and tools

Agricultural nonpoint source (NPS) pollution leads to water quality degradation. While agriculture is faced with the challenge of feeding a growing population in a changing climate, farmers must also strive to minimize adverse impacts of agriculture on the environment. As a result, policies, and agri-environmental programs to promote agricultural conservation practices for controlling NPS pollution have been emerging. Despite progress, reducing NPS is a complex challenge that requires ongoing innovation and investment. A major challenge is to achieve an optimal spatial trade-off between the economic costs and positive environmental outcomes of conservation practices on complex agricultural landscapes. Geospatial systems and tools can help to address this challenge and enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of conservation efforts. However, using these tools for precision conservation is underexamined. This review paper aims to address this gap through a critical exploration of spatial decision support systems and tools to provide synthesized knowledge for implementing precision conservation practices. This paper proposes a conceptual framework to guide the implementation of precision conservation and identifies areas for further development of geospatial systems and tools on planning and assessment of precision conservation efforts. All of which will be helpful for decision-makers and watershed managers in determining the most effective approaches for precision conservation. Furthermore, this review highlights the need for further research and development towards establishing an integrated spatial decision support system framework, which can improve socio-economic, environmental, and ecological outcomes.

Sources of variation in nutrient loads collected through street sweeping in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area, Minnesota, USA

Excess non-point nutrient loading continues to impair urban surface waters. Because of the potential contribution of tree litterfall to nutrient pollution in stormwater, street sweeping is a promising management tool for reducing eutrophication in urban and suburban regions. However, nutrient concentrations and loads of material removed through street sweeping have not been well characterized, impeding the development of pollution reduction credits and improvement of models for stormwater management. We evaluated the role of canopy cover over streets, street sweeper type, season, and sweeping frequency in contributing to variation in concentrations and loads of nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and solids recovered in street sweepings, using analyses of samples collected during regular street sweeping operations in five cities in the Minneapolis-St. Paul Metropolitan Area, Minnesota, USA. We expected that nutrient concentrations and loads would be highest in seasons and places of higher tree litterfall. We also expected that regenerative-air sweepers would recover higher loads compared to mechanical broom sweepers. Total N and P concentrations in sweepings increased most strongly with canopy cover in June, October, and November. Total N and P recovered in street sweepings similarly increased with canopy cover in June, October, and November, and peaked in early summer and autumn, times of high litterfall. In contrast, total dry mass in sweepings was greatest in early spring, following winter snowmelt. However, nutrient loads and concentrations did not differ between sweeper types. Our results add to growing evidence of the importance of street trees in contributing nutrient pollution to urban surface waters. Street sweeping focused on high-canopy streets during early summer and autumn is likely an effective management tool for stormwater nutrient pollution.

Addressing the C/N imbalance in the treatment of irrigated agricultural water by using a hybrid constructed wetland at field-scale

To mitigate excess of nitrate-N (NO3--N) derived from agricultural activity, constructed wetlands (CWs) are created to simulate natural removal mechanisms. Irrigated agricultural drainage water is commonly characterized by an organic carbon/nitrogen (C/N) imbalance, thus, C limitation constrains heterotrophic denitrification, the main biotic process implicated in NO3--N removal in wetlands. We studied a pilot plant with three series (169 m2) of hybrid CWs over the first two years of functioning to examine: i) the effect of adding different C-rich substrates (natural soil vs. biochar) to gravel on NO3--N removal in a subsurface flow (Phase I), ii) the role of a second phase with a horizontal surface flow (Phase II) as a source of dissolved organic C (DOC), and its effect in a consecutive horizontal subsurface flow (Phase III) on NO3--N removal, and iii) the contribution of each phase to global NO3--N removal. Our results showed that the addition of a C-rich substrate to gravel had a positive effect on NO3--N removal in Phase I, with mean efficiencies of 40% and 17% for soil and biochar addition, respectively, compared to only gravel (0.75%). In Phase II, the algae growth turned into a DOC concentration increase, but it did not enhance NO3--N removal in Phase III. In series with C-rich substrate addition, the largest contribution to NO3--N removal was found in Phase I. However, in series with only gravel, Phase II was the most effective on NO3--N removal. Contribution of Phase III to NO3--N removal was almost negligible.

Resilience and phenotypic plasticity of Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) facing cyclic hypoxia: insights into growth, energy stores and hepatic metabolism

Arctic char (Salvelinus alpinus) is facing the decline of its southernmost populations due to several factors including rising temperatures and eutrophication. These conditions are also conducive to episodes of cyclic hypoxia, another possible threat to this species. In fact, lack of oxygen and reoxygenation can both have serious consequences on fish as a result of altered ATP balance and an elevated risk of oxidative burst. Thus, fish must adjust their phenotype to survive and equilibrate their energetic budget. However, their energy allocation strategy could imply a reduction in growth which could be deleterious for their fitness. Although the impact of cyclic hypoxia is a major issue for ecosystems and fisheries worldwide, our knowledge on how salmonid deal with high oxygen fluctuations remains limited. Our objective was to characterize the effects of cyclic hypoxia on growth and metabolism in Arctic char. We monitored growth parameters (specific growth rate, condition factor), hepatosomatic and visceral indexes, relative heart mass and hematocrit of Arctic char exposed to 30 days of cyclic hypoxia. We also measured the hepatic protein synthesis rate, hepatic triglycerides as well as muscle glucose, glycogen and lactate and quantified hepatic metabolites during this treatment. The first days of cyclic hypoxia slightly reduce growth performance with a downward trend in specific growth rate in mass and condition factor variation compared to the control group. This acute exposure also induced a profound metabolome reorganization in the liver with an alteration of amino acid, carbohydrate and lipid metabolisms. However, fish rebalanced their metabolic activities and successfully maintained their growth and energetic reserves after 1 month of cyclic hypoxia. These results demonstrate the impressive ability of Arctic char to cope with its changing environment but also highlight a certain vulnerability of this species during the first days of a cyclic hypoxia event.

Improved eutrophication model with flow velocity-influence function and application for algal bloom control in a reservoir in East China

Improving hydrodynamic conditions is considered an effective method for facilitating the eutrophication management. However, the effect of hydrodynamic conditions on algal growth has rarely been quantified. In this work, a eutrophication model was developed and flow velocity was introduced into the algae growth kinetic formula to simulate the dynamics of algae growth in a drinking water source reservoir in East China. Based on the previous research and model calibration, the flow velocity-influence function f(v) and its parameters were determined. Accordingly, the optimal flow velocity for the dominant algae growth and critical flow velocity for algal growth inhibition were presented to be 0.055 m/s and 0.200 m/s for the study reservoir. Modeled results considering f(v) agreed with better with observations and reproduced the algal overgrowth process more accurately. The spatial-temporal differences in chlorophyll a (Chl a) concentration distribution during the algal proliferation period were analyzed on the basis of simulation results, which corroborated the significant influence of flow velocity on algal growth. The established model was applied to investigate the effect of improvement in hydrodynamic conditions on algal bloom control in the reservoir, and the scenario simulation of the additional sluice was conducted. Results showed that the additional sluice operation inhibited algal overgrowth effectively, resulting in an average decrease of 24.8%, 3.3%, 43.0%, and 37.5% in modeled Chl a concentration upstream north, upstream south, midstream and downstream, respectively. The established model might serve as a practical tool for eutrophication management in the study reservoir and other water bodies with similar hydrological characteristics and geographical features.

Feedback of lake trophic status via MC-LR fluorescence technique

Eutrophication remains one of the most challenging environmental problems, and microcystin-leucine-arginine (MC-LR) produced in eutrophic waters would cause serious ecological risks. However, the traditional assessment methods of trophic status, such as water quality index (WQI) and trophic status index (TSI), could not directly reflect the existence or concentration of MC-LR in water. Moreover, traditional MC-LR detection methods are costly and time-consuming. Therefore, it remains a challenge to develop a method that can simply and quickly reflect the level of MC-LR. Herein, a novel probe with specific response to MC-LR was proposed to assess the distribution characteristics of MC-LR in water bodies. By combining the response signal of the probe with the filtered water sample and the water quality parameters, a more accurate assessment tool for MC-LR was obtained. This probe can specifically respond to MC-LR in aqueous solution, and its fluorescence signal is enhanced with the increase of MC-LR concentration. More importantly, the fluorescent signal of the probe showed a significant positive correlation with MC-LR concentration in water samples. This visualization tool has practical application potential for the preliminary assessment of MC-LR in eutrophic waters.

Revealing mechanisms of triclosan on the removal and distribution of nitrogen and phosphorus in microalgal-bacterial symbiosis system

Microalgal-bacterial symbiosis (MABS) system performs synergistic effect on the reduction of nutrients and carbon emissions in the water treatment process. However, antimicrobial agents are frequently detected in water, which influence the performance of MABS system. In this study, triclosan (TCS) was selected to reveal the effects and mechanisms of antimicrobial agents on MABS system. Results showed that the removal efficiencies of chemical oxygen demand, NH4+-N and total phosphorus decreased by 3.0%, 24.0% and 14.3% under TCS stress. In contrast, there were no significant decrease on the removal effect of total nitrogen. Mechanism analysis showed that both the growth rate of microorganisms and the nutrients retention capacity of extracellular polymeric substances were decreased. The intracellular accumulation for nitrogen and phosphorus was promoted due to the increased cytomembrane permeability caused by lipid peroxidation. Moreover, microalgae were dominant in MABS system with ratio between microalgae and bacteria of more than 5.49. The main genus was Parachlorella, with abundance of more than 90%. Parachlorella was highly tolerant to TCS, which might be conductive to maintain its survival. This study revealed the nutrients pathways of MABS system under TCS stress, and helped to optimize the operation of MABS system.

Variability of sedimentary phosphorus composition across Canadian lakes

Phosphorus (P) in lake sediments is stored within diverse forms, often associated with metals, minerals, and organic matter. Sediment P can be remobilized to the water column, but the environmental conditions influencing the P retention-release balance depend upon the sediment chemistry and forms of P present. Sequential fractionation approaches can be used to help understand forms of P present in the sediments, and their vulnerability to release. We assessed P composition in surficial sediments (as an assemblage of six P-fractions) and its relationship with watershed, and lake-specific explanatory variables from 236 lakes across Canada. Sediment P composition varied widely across the 12 sampled Canadian ecozones. The dominant P-fractions were the residual-P and the labile organic P, while the loosely bound P corresponded to the smallest proportion of sediment TP. Notable contrasts in sediment P composition were apparent across select regions - with the most significant differences between sediment P in lakes from the mid-West Canada region (Prairies and Boreal Plains ecozones) and both Eastern coastal (Atlantic Maritime and Atlantic Highlands) and Western coastal (Pacific Maritime) ecozones. The ecozone attributes most critical to sediment P speciation across Canadian lakes were related to soil types in the watershed (e.g., podzols, chernozems, and Luvisols) and the chemical composition of lake water and sediments, such as dissolved Ca in lake water, bulk sedimentary Ca, Al, and Fe, dissolved SO4 in lake water, lake pH, and salinity. Understanding predictors of the forms of P stored in surficial sediments helps advance our knowledge of in-lake P retention and remobilization processes across the millions of unstudied lakes and can help our understanding of controls on internal P loading.

Evaluation of nutrient assimilative capacity in waterfowl impoundments: The role of environmental stressors

The effectiveness of wetlands in sequestering nutrients and improving water quality relies on a suite of abiotic and biotic conditions. To more fully understand the restraints on nutrient removal, especially salinity and plant cover, we created field-scale mesocosms and monitored nutrient sequestration with nutrient additions and isotopic pool dilutions over 2 years in two wetlands near the Great Salt Lake in Utah. Surprisingly, we found no differences in nutrient removal with plant removal, increased salinity, and altered ambient nutrient concentrations, suggesting functional redundancy in associated primary producers. When submerged aquatic vegetation was removed, chlorophyll α concentration (0.1-9.0 μg/L) increased while nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) assimilation remained the same as phytoplankton occupied the open niche space. We did find ammonium concentrations to be inversely related to nitrate assimilation-as the ammonium concentration increased, nitrate assimilation decreased, suggesting preferential uptake of ammonium. Last, in our high N and P treatment mesocosms, the nitrate dramatically declined from 43.9 mg/L to background levels (<0.1 mg/L) within 1 week, showing a high potential for N remediation in these wetlands.

Interplays between cyanobacterial blooms and antibiotic resistance genes

Cyanobacterial harmful algal blooms (cyanoHABs), which are a form of microbial dysbiosis in freshwater environments, are an emerging environmental and public health concern. Additionally, the freshwater environment serves as a reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), which pose a risk of transmission during microbial dysbiosis, such as cyanoHABs. However, the interactions between potential synergistic pollutants, cyanoHABs, and ARGs remain poorly understood. During cyanoHABs, Microcystis and high microcystin levels were dominant in all the nine regions of the river sampled. The resistome, mobilome, and microbiome were interrelated and linked to the physicochemical properties of freshwater. Planktothrix and Pseudanabaena competed with Actinobacteriota and Proteobacteria during cyanoHABs. Forty two ARG carriers were identified, most of which belonged to Actinobacteriota and Proteobacteria. ARG carriers showed a strong correlation with ARGs density, which decreased with the severity of cyanoHAB. Although ARGs decreased due to a reduction of ARG carriers during cyanoHABs, mobile gene elements (MGEs) and virulence factors (VFs) genes increased. We explored the relationship between cyanoHABs and ARGs for potential synergistic interaction. Our findings demonstrated that cyanobacteria compete with freshwater commensal bacteria such as Actinobacteriota and Proteobacteria, which carry ARGs in freshwater, resulting in a reduction of ARGs levels. Moreover, cyanoHABs generate biotic and abiotic stress in the freshwater microbiome, which may lead to an increase in MGEs and VFs. Exploration of the intricate interplays between microbiome, resistome, mobilome, and pathobiome during cyanoHABs not only revealed that the mechanisms underlying the dynamics of microbial dysbiosis but also emphasizes the need to prioritize the prevention of microbial dysbiosis in the risk management of ARGs.

The role of bioturbation triggered by benthic macroinvertebrates in the effectiveness of the Floc & Lock technique in mitigating eutrophication

Anthropogenic activities have led to excessive loading of phosphorus and nitrogen into water bodies, leading to eutrophication and promoting the growth of cyanobacteria, posing a threat to the health of humans and aquatic animals. Techniques such as Floc & Lock have been developed to mitigate eutrophication by reducing phosphorus concentrations in water and preventing algal blooms. However, little attention has been given to the impact of phosphorus resuspension by sediment-associated organisms such as benthic macroinvertebrates, on the effectiveness of this technique. Here, we experimentally evaluated whether the presence of snails Melanoides tuberculata (Müller, 1774) and larvae of Chironomus sancticaroli (Strixino and Strixino, 1981) affects the efficiency of the Floc & Lock technique. Snails and chironomid larvae are benthic macroinvertebrates commonly found in high abundance in eutrophic reservoirs. Specifically, we tested the hypotheses that (i) the presence of benthic macroinvertebrates reduces the efficiency of coagulants and clays in removing phosphorus and algal biomass from the water column, and (ii) this effect is species-dependent, as some organisms such as the snails, revolve the substrate and resuspend sedimented particles, while other ones, such as chironomid larvae, aid in the removal of phosphorus from the water column by depositing them in the sediment. Our findings revealed that the impact of benthic macroinvertebrates on the effectiveness of the Floc & Lock technique is species-dependent. Chironomid larvae positively influenced the efficiency of the technique by aiding in the removal of total phosphorus, soluble reactive phosphorus, and algal biomass from the water column, depositing them in the sediment. In contrast, the presence of snails had the opposite effect, resulting in increased phosphorus concentration and algal biomass in the water. Surprisingly, the snails consumed the flocs formed by the coagulant and clay within a short time interval of 72 h, raising concerns due to the presence of toxic cyanobacterial biomass in these flocs. Our study emphasizes the importance of considering benthic macroinvertebrates and their impact on the effectiveness of eutrophication management techniques.

Establishing riverine nutrient criteria using individual taxa thresholds

Nutrient enrichment is one of the most pervasive impacts on aquatic ecosystems globally. Approaches to establish nutrient criteria that safeguard aquatic ecosystem health are highly variable and, in many instances, criteria are derived from correlations between in-situ nutrient concentrations and biological indices. Summarising entire assemblages with a single index can result in a substantial loss of information and potentially weaker relationships. In this study, we compared the derivation of nutrient criteria using biological indices and those from individual taxa for rivers and streams in New Zealand. Random forest models, including nutrient concentrations, were built to predict two biological indices and individual taxa across New Zealand's river monitoring network. For all acceptable models, the response of the biological indices and individual taxa to increasing Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen (DIN) and Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus (DRP) were then predicted for every river reach across the nation, and nutrient concentrations that protected 80% of taxa were then identified. Models for the biological indices were poor but were good for most of the taxa, with nutrient concentrations almost always being the most influential factor. To ensure persistence of at least 80% of the taxa within a river reach, we estimated that DIN (Dissolved Inorganic Nitrogen) concentrations would need to be below 0.57-1.32 mg/L, and DRP (Dissolved Reactive Phosphorus) concentrations below 0.019-0.033 mg/L, depending on the river type. In general, high order, low slope rivers and streams required more stringent nutrient criteria than steep, low order streams. The link between nutrient concentrations and biological indices were weak and likely suffer from the loss of information from summarising an entire assemblage into a single numeric. We consider that the derivation of nutrient criteria for waterways should also examine the individual relationships with the taxa in a river system to establish protection for a desired proportion of taxa.

Tipping points of nitrogen use efficiency in freshwater phytoplankton along trophic state gradient

Eutrophication and harmful algal blooms have severe effects on water quality and biodiversity in lakes and reservoirs. Ecological regime shifts of phytoplankton blooms are generally thought to be driven by the rapidly rising nutrient use efficiency of bloom-forming species over short periods, and often exhibit nonlinear dynamics. Regime shifts of trophic state, eutrophication, stratification, and clear or turbid waters are well-studied topics in aquatic ecology. However, information on the prevalence of regime shifts in relationships between trophic states and phytoplankton resource transfer efficiencies in ecosystems is still lacking. Here, we provided a first insight into regime shifts in nitrogen use efficiency of phytoplankton along the trophic state gradient. We explored the regime shifts of phytoplankton resource use efficiency and detected the tipping points by combining four temporal or spatial datasets from tropical to temperate zones in Asia and Europe. We first observed significant abrupt transitions (abruptness > 1) in phytoplankton nitrogen use efficiency along the trophic state gradient. The tipping point values were lower in subtropical/tropical waterbodies (mesotrophic states; TSIc: around 50) than those in temperate zones (eutrophic states; TSIc: 60-70). The regime shifts significantly reduced the primary production transfer efficiency via zooplankton (from 0.15 ± 0.03 to 0.03 ± 0.01; mean ± standard error) in the aquatic food web. Nitrogen-fixing filamentous cyanobacteria can drive eutrophication under mesotrophic state. Our findings imply that the time-window of opportunity for harmful algae prevention and control in lakes and reservoirs is earlier in subtropical/tropical regions.

Hypoxia in aquatic invertebrates: Occurrence and phenotypic and molecular responses

Global deoxygenation in aquatic systems is an increasing environmental problem, and substantial oxygen loss has been reported. Aquatic animals have been continuously exposed to hypoxic environments, so-called "dead zones," in which severe die-offs among organisms are driven by low-oxygen events. Multiple studies of hypoxia exposure have focused on in vivo endpoints, metabolism, oxidative stress, and immune responses in aquatic invertebrates such as molluscs, crustaceans, echinoderms, and cnidarians. They have shown that acute and chronic exposure to hypoxia induces significant decreases in locomotion, respiration, feeding, growth, and reproduction rates. Also, several studies have examined the molecular responses of aquatic invertebrates, such as anaerobic metabolism, reactive oxygen species induction, increased antioxidant enzymes, immune response mechanisms, regulation of hypoxia-inducible factor 1-alpha (HIF-1α) genes, and differently expressed hemoglobin/hemocyanin. The genetic basis of those molecular responses involves HIF-1α pathway genes, which are highly expressed in hypoxic conditions. However, the identification of HIF-1α-related genes and understanding of their applications in some aquatic invertebrates remain inadequate. Also, some species of crustaceans, rotifers, sponges, and ctenophores that lack HIF-1α are thought to have alternative defense mechanisms to cope with hypoxia, but those factors are still unclear. This review covers the formation of hypoxia in aquatic environments and the various adverse effects of hypoxia on aquatic invertebrates. The limitations of current hypoxia research and genetic information about the HIF-1α pathway are also discussed. Finally, this paper explains the underlying processes of the hypoxia response and presents an integrated program for research about the molecular mechanisms of hypoxic stresses in aquatic invertebrates.

Adaptation and application of the fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE) method for characterizing the trophic state of tropical semiarid reservoirs

Eutrophication is a recurrent problem in water bodies, especially in tropical semiarid reservoirs. The trophic state index (TSI) is an important tool for the environmental management of aquatic systems. However, determining the TSI involves uncertainties that can affect decision-making. This study aimed to adapt and apply the fuzzy synthetic evaluation (FSE) to characterize the TSI considering the uncertainties of the reference eutrophication classification system. The Castanhão reservoir, the largest in the State of Ceará, Brazil, was taken as a case study. The results showed that (i) the uncertainty of the trophic classification system can be characterized by the triangular and trapezoidal membership functions; (ii) the result matrix associates the global trophic level with a degree of certainty, providing greater confidence to the decision maker; (iii) the eutrophication index (EI) is not an adequate tool for hierarchizing the trophic degree; and (iv) the membership level of the global trophic state generated by the FSE method is a suitable alternative to the EI. It is concluded that the proposed FSE model can be a useful tool for improving water resources management, especially in drylands.

Magnetic Adsorbent Fe3O4/ZnO/LC for the Removal of Tetracycline and Congo Red from Aqueous Solution

Zeolitic imidazolate frameworks (ZIFs) can be used as an adsorbent to efficiently adsorb organic pollutants. However, ZIF nanoparticles are easy to form aggregates, hampering the effective and practical application in practical adsorption. In this study, the ZIF-8 was successfully loaded onto lignocellulose (LC) to further produce ZnO/LC by in situ growth method and hydrothermal treatment, and then Fe3O4 nanoparticles (Fe3O4 NPs) were loaded onto ZnO/LC to prepare magnetic Fe3O4/ZnO/LC adsorbent for removing tetracycline (TC) and congo red (CR) pollutants from aqueous solution. The adsorption properties of the adsorbent were systematically analyzed for different conditions, such as adsorbent dosage, solution pH, contact time, temperature and initial concentration. The experimental data were fitted using adsorption kinetic and isotherm models. The results showed that the pseudo-second-order model and Sips model were well fitted to the adsorption kinetic and adsorption isotherm, respectively. The adsorption capacities of TC and CR reached the maximum value of 383.4 mg/g and 409.1 mg/g in experimental conditions. The mechanism of the removal mainly includes electrostatic interaction, hydrogen bonding and π-π stacking. This novel adsorbent could be rapidly separated from the aqueous solution, suggesting its high potential to remove pollutants in wastewater.

Innovative receiving phase for Chemcatcher® passive sampler for phosphorus in the water environment: Calibration of sampling rate by water temperature and pH

Passive sampling is a technique for monitoring orthophosphate (PO4-P) in the water environment. Compared with traditional grab sampling followed by PO4-P quantification, kinetic-type passive samplers such as Chemcatcher® express representative concentrations of PO4-P as time-weighted average concentrations (CTWA). They can also potentially evaluate much lower PO4-P concentrations, but the available receiving phases of Chemcatcher® used for PO4-P were extremely limited. We developed a new receiving phase, the PSfZS sheet, comprising a zirconium sulfate-surfactant micelle mesostructure and polysulfone matrix. We examined its performance in terms of PO4-P sorption characteristics, PO4-P selectivity, and PO4-P sampling rate (Rs). Its capacity was adequate (12.0 μg-P/cm2) and selectivity for PO4-P uptake was good. The Rs for PO4-P increased with increasing water temperature (8.1-29.1 °C) and decreasing pH (4.1-9.7) in a laboratory calibration, and ranged from 5.27 × 10-2 L/d to 1.66 × 10-1 L/d. We placed the samplers in a municipal wastewater treatment plant, a shallow eutrophic lake, and an oligotrophic caldera lake. The Rs in the deployment sites was calibrated by monitored water temperature and pH. The estimated CTWA of PO4-P in the municipal wastewater treatment plant was similar to the averaged concentration of soluble reactive phosphorus determined by multiple grab samplings. In the lake deployments, we found that the new sampler can quantify CTWA values of PO4-P below 10 μg/L, and thus it provides more technical monitoring options and contributes to the conservation and management of the water environment.

Eutrophication assessment and environmental management perspectives of Tóbari: an arid subtropical coastal lagoon of the Gulf of California

Coastal lagoons are vulnerable to eutrophication processes. In this study, we evaluate the eutrophication process in the restricted, arid subtropical Tóbari coastal lagoon, located in the eastern coast of the Gulf of California, where the main source of nutrient inputs and other pollutants is agricultural wastewater from the Yaqui Valley. The Assessment of Estuarine Trophic Status (ASSETS) model and the Trophic State Index (TRIX) were used to evaluate eutrophication. Overall, ASSETS showed that the Tóbari lagoon has a moderate eutrophication process, with seasonal symptoms of hypoxia, increased phytoplankton biomass, dominance of macroalgae (indicative of nutrient enrichment), and blooms development of potentially harmful algae species. The TRIX showed that the lagoon is mesotrophic most of the year. Challenges of environmental management detected correspond to reducing the input of nutrients and others contaminants from anthropic sources: agriculture, shrimp farming, livestock, and urban zones.
