The factors influencing the vertical transport of microplastics in marine environment: A review

Spatial distribution of small microplastics in the Norwegian Coastal Current

High concentrations of microplastic (MP) particles have been reported in the Arctic Ocean. However, studies on the high-resolution lateral and vertical transport of MPs from the European waters to the Arctic are still scarce. Here, we provide information about the concentrations and compositions of MPs in surface, subsurface, and deeper waters (< 1 m, ∼ 4 m, and 17-1679 m) collected at 18 stations on six transects along the Norwegian Coastal Current (NCC) using an improved Neuston Catamaran, the COntinuos MicroPlastic Automatic Sampling System (COMPASS), and in situ pumps, respectively. FTIR microscopy and spectroscopy were applied to measure MP concentration, polymer composition, and size distribution. Results indicate that the concentrations of small microplastics (SMPs, <300 μm) varied considerably (0-1240 MP m-3) within the water column, with significantly higher concentrations in the surface (189 MP m-3) and subsurface (38 MP m-3) waters compared to deeper waters (16 MP m-3). Furthermore, the average concentration of SMPs in surface water samples was four orders of magnitude higher than the abundance of large microplastics (LMPs, >300 μm), and overall, SMPs <50 μm account for >80 % of all detected MPs. However, no statistically significant geographical patterns were observed in SMP concentrations in surface/subsurface seawaters between the six sampling transects, suggesting a relatively homogeneous horizontal distribution of SMPs in the upper ocean within the NCC/Norwegian Atlantic Current (NwAC) interface. The Lagrangian particle dispersal simulation model further enabled us to assess the large-scale transport of MPs from the Northern European waters to the Arctic.

Microplastic pollution in surface sediments of Coromandel coastline, South-East Coast, India: Diversity index, carbonyl index, pollution load index, risk fraction and MPs inventory

The investigation along the Coromandel coastline of South-east India focused on assessing microplastics abundance using Simpson's diversity index (DIMP), Degradation-carbonyl index (DgCIMP), Pollution load index (PLIMP) and Ecological risk fraction (RfMP). These indices evaluated the dissemination and transportation of MPs across a 1076 km stretch divided into five zones from Chennai to Kanyakumari. During the wet season, average microplastics abundance (101 ± 36.6 items/kg dw) was lower compared to the dry season (143 ± 56.2 items/kg dw). Notably, 54% and 45% of microplastics were found in the 0.1-0.5 mm size range, with 45% and 64% being colored microplastics, and 80% and 71% being fibers during the wet and dry seasons respectively. Micro-Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (μFTIR) analysis showed rayon (34%) and PE (64%) dominance in ports and estuaries during both seasons. Kottaipattinam Port exhibited higher diversity indices (DIMPsh=0.56,DIMPsz=0.66,DIMPco=0.50andDIMPpo=0.65) compared to other zones, with an overall diversity index IDIMP of 0.57. Notably, among the DgCIMP values (n = 96), only 12 fell within the moderate photo-chemical oxidation range (0.16-0.35), while the majority (n = 60) surpassed 0.35 indicating higher oxidation levels, with some (n = 24) exceeding 0.50, signifying extreme oxidation. PLIMP revealed that 42% of sampling stations had very low to negligible MP contamination levels in ports and estuaries. However, ecological risk fraction RfMP values ranged from 10.2 to 13,670, with 27% of values exceeding 1500, indicating higher coastal ecological risk in 13 sampling stations.

The ecological risk and fate of microplastics in the environmental matrices of marine ranching area in coastal water

The debate surrounding "source" and "sink" of microplastics (MPs) in coastal water has persisted for decades. While the transportation of MPs is influenced by surface runoff and currents, the precise transport patterns remain inadequately defined. In this study, the typical coastal habitat - marine ranching in Haizhou Bay (Jiangsu Province, China) were selected as a case study to assess the ecological risk of MPs. An enhanced framework was employed to assess the entire community characteristics of MPs in various environmental compartments, including surface water (SW), middle water (MW), bottom water (BW), sea bottom sediment (SS), and intertidal sediment (IS). The results of the assessment showed a low risk in the water column and a high risk in the sediment. PERMANOVA based on size and polymer of MPs revealed significant differences between IS and other compartments (SW, MW, BW, and SS) (P < 0.001). The co-occurrence network analysis for MP size indicated that most sites occupied central positions, while the analysis for MP polymer suggested that sites near the marine ranching area held more central positions, with sites in MW, BW, and SS being somewhat related to IS. Generalized additive model (GAM) demonstrated that MP concentration in the water correlated with Chla and nutrients, whereas MPs in sediment exhibited greater susceptibility to dissolved oxygen (DO) and salinity. We believe that except for the natural sedimentation and re-suspension of MPs in the vertical direction, MPs in bottom water may migrate to the surface water due to upwelling mediated by artificial reefs. Additionally, under the combined influence of surface runoff, currents, and tides, MPs may migrate horizontally, primarily occurring between middle and bottom water and sediments. The study recommends limiting and reducing wastewater and sewage discharge, as well as regulating fishing and aquaculture activities to control the sources and sinks of MPs in coastal water. Moreover, it advocates the implementation and strengthening of marine monitoring activities to gain a better understanding of the factors driving MP pollution in marine ranching area.

Preliminary assessment of microplastic in rhizosphere and non-rhizosphere region of mangrove at four locations along Karachi coast, Pakistan

Mangrove ecosystem faces significant threats from the various pollutants including microplastic (MPs). The aim of this study was to assess variations in MP distribution in mangrove sediments of rhizosphere (R) and non-rhizosphere (NR) regions. A total of 14,960 MP particles were identified from Sandspit backwater (SS-1 & SS-2) and Creek areas (PQ & KC). Notably, the NR showed higher MP counts (7848) compared to the R region (7112). Analysis revealed variations in MP types, with beads being predominant in both R and NR, followed by film, fiber, and fragments. KC exhibited highest MP contamination, followed by PQ, SS-2, and SS-1. Fourier-transform infrared (FTIR) analysis confirmed the presence of polyethylene terephthalate and polyethylene in sediments samples. This first detailed report on MP in mangrove sediments and other limited studies from Pakistan establishes the widespread distribution of MPs in the coastal area and provide a baseline for further elaboration in future.

Toxicological review of micro- and nano-plastics in aquatic environments: Risks to ecosystems, food web dynamics and human health

The increase of micro- and nano-plastics (MNPs) in aquatic environments has become a significant concern due to their potential toxicological effects on ecosystems, food web dynamics, and human health. These plastic particles emerge from a range of sources, such as the breakdown of larger plastic waste, consumer products, and industrial outputs. This review provides a detailed report of the transmission and dangers of MNPs in aquatic ecosystems, environmental behavior, and interactions within aquatic food webs, emphasizing their toxic impact on marine life. It explores the relationship between particle size and toxicity, their distribution in different tissues, and the process of trophic transfer through the food web. MNPs, once consumed, can be found in various organs, including the digestive system, gills, and liver. Their consumption by lower trophic level organisms facilitates their progression up the food chain, potentially leading to bioaccumulation and biomagnification, thereby posing substantial risks to the health, reproduction, and behavior of aquatic species. This work also explores how MNPs, through their persistence and bioaccumulation, pose risks to aquatic biodiversity and disrupt trophic relationships. The review also addresses the implications of MNPs for human health, particularly through the consumption of contaminated seafood, highlighting the direct and indirect pathways through which humans are exposed to these pollutants. Furthermore, the review highlights the recommendations for future research directions, emphasizing the integration of ecological, toxicological, and human health studies to inform risk assessments and develop mitigation strategies to address the global challenge of plastic pollution in aquatic environments.

When antibiotics encounter microplastics in aquatic environments: Interaction, combined toxicity, and risk assessments

Antibiotics and microplastics (MPs), known as emerging pollutants, are bound to coexist in aquatic environments due to their widespread distribution and prolonged persistence. To date, few systematic summaries are available for the interaction between MPs and antibiotics in aquatic ecosystems, and a comprehensive reanalysis of their combined toxicity is also needed. Based on the collected published data, we have analyzed the source and distribution of MPs and antibiotics in global aquatic environments, finding their coexistence occurs in a lot of study sites. Accordingly, the presence of MPs can directly alter the environmental behavior of antibiotics. The main influencing factors of interaction between antibiotics and MPs have been summarized in terms of the characteristics of MPs and antibiotics, as well as the environmental factors. Then, we have conducted a meta-analysis to evaluate the combined toxicity of antibiotics and MPs on aquatic organisms and the related toxicity indicators, suggesting a significant adverse effect on algae, and inapparent on fish and daphnia. Finally, the environmental risk assessments for antibiotics and MPs were discussed, but unfortunately the standardized methodology for the risk assessment of MPs is still challenging, let alone assessment for their combined toxicity. This review provides insights into the interactions and environment risks of antibiotics and MPs in the aquatic environment, and suggests perspectives for future research.

Settling velocity of atmospheric particles in seawater: Based on hydrostatic sedimentation method using video imaging techniques

When atmospheric particles deposit to the ocean, their settling velocities and residence times associated are critical for their effects on oceanic ecosystems. We developed a hydrostatic sedimentation method using video imaging techniques to track particles of 5-20 μm in diameter falling into seawater and determine the particle settling velocities in relation to their diameter, shape, organic matter contained, and seawater salinity. The measured settling velocities varied from 0.025 to 0.41 mm/s. Irregular particle shape and organic matter contained in particles also, however, reduced the values. The settling velocities were decelerated by the dissolution process of particle in seawater. Combined with the experimental results, a formula for calculating the settling velocity formulae for atmospheric particles was estimated. Using this equation, the residence time of particles is estimated to be less than one month in continental shelf sea and more than 100 days in the oceans.

Microplastics contamination in water supply system and treatment processes

Due to global demand, millions of tons of plastics have been widely consumed, resulting in the widespread entry of vast amounts of microplastic particles into the environment. The presence of microplastics (MPs) in water supplies, including bottled water, has undergone systematic review, assessing the potential impacts of MPs on humans through exposure assessment. The main challenges associated with current technologies lie in their ability to effectively treat and completely remove MPs from drinking and supply water. While the risks posed by MPs upon entering the human body have not yet been fully revealed, there is a predicted certainty of negative impacts. This review encompasses a range of current technologies, spanning from basic to advanced treatments and varying in scale. However, given the frequent detection of MPs in drinking and bottled water, it becomes imperative to implement comprehensive management strategies to address this issue effectively. Consequently, integrating current technologies with management options such as life-cycle assessment, circular economy principles, and machine learning is crucial to eliminating this pervasive problem.

High-sensitive determination of tetracycline antibiotics adsorbed on microplastics in mariculture water using pre-COF/monolith composite-based in-tube solid phase microextraction on-line coupled to HPLC-MS/MS

Microplastics (MPs) act as carriers for organic pollutants (e.g. antibiotics) and microorganisms (e.g. bacteria) in waters, leading to the proliferation of antibiotic resistance genes. Moreover, the antibiotics adsorbed on MPs may exacerbate this process. For further research, it is necessary to understand the types and amounts of antibiotics adsorbed on MPs. However, due to the heavy work of MPs collection and sample pretreatment, there is a lack of analytical methods and relevant data. In this study, an in-tube solid phase microextraction (IT-SPME) on-line coupled to HPLC-MS/MS method based on amorphous precursor polymer of three-dimensional covalent organic frameworks/monolith-based composite adsorbent was developed, which could efficiently capture, enrich and analyze tetracycline (TCs) antibiotics. Under the optimal extraction parameters, the developed method was capable of detecting TCs at levels as low as 0.48-1.76 pg. This method was applied to analyze the TCs adsorbed on MPs of different particle sizes in mariculture water for the first time, requiring a minimum amount of MPs of only 1 mg. Furthermore, it was observed that there could be an antagonistic relationship between algal biofilm and TCs loaded on MPs. This approach could open up new possibilities for analyzing pollutants on MPs and support deeper research on MPs.

Atmospheric microplastic deposition associated with GDP and population growth: Insights from megacities in northern China

Microplastic (MP) pollution is evolving into one of the most pressing environmental concerns worldwide. This study assessed the impact of economic activities on atmospheric MP pollution across 17 megacities in northern China, analyzing the correlation between the deposition flux of atmospheric MPs and variables such as city population, gross domestic product (GDP), and industrial structure. The results have shown that the MP pollution is obviously impacted by human activities related to increased GDP, population, as well as tertiary service sector, in which the MP pollution shows most close relationship with the GDP growth. Polypropylene, polyamide, polyurethane, and polyethylene were identified as the primary components of atmospheric MPs. The average particle size of MPs in atmospheric dustfall is 78.3 µm, and the frequency of MP particles increases as the particle size decreases. The findings highlight the complex relationship between socio-economic development and atmospheric MP accumulation, providing essential insights for the formulation of targeted emission reduction strategies.

Monitoring of microplastic pollution in sediments along the Çoruh River Basin, NE Türkiye

Microplastic (MP) pollution has become a research issue on the world agenda. Monitoring studies are essential for MP content in aquatic environments since it is the final accumulation point. The present study focused on MP characterizations in sediment samples taken from 20 different stations on the Çoruh River, the major river in the North East of Türkiye. Accordingly, the potential anthropogenic pollution from settlements near the four stations (2, 15, 18, and 20) exceeding 400 MP kg-1 was estimated. On the other hand, stations (1, 3, 9, 11, and 13) far from settlements with quite low MP abundance were also observed. The polymer structures of the detected MPs are generally PE and PET, and their shapes are mostly fiber. This situation raises suspicion that MPs originate from primary use waste such as water bottles and packaging materials. In general, the fiber MPs are smaller than the fragments because of the river's high water flow rate and the low strength of the fiber MPs. In light of these results, the current monitoring data in the region will create awareness and guidance regarding MP pollution in settlements.

Deciphering the seasonal dynamics of microplastic morphotypes and associated co-contaminants along the northwest coast of India

In the present study, the northwest coast of India, bordering the Arabian Sea, was selected to evaluate the microplastic (MP) abundance. This is the first study to emphasize the effects of different seasons on MP distribution. The collected MPs were dried, segregated, and evaluated based on their morphotype, size, color, and polymer type. A total of 1756.6, 7326.6, and 202 particles/kg of sand were estimated in the pre-monsoon, monsoon and post-monsoon seasons, respectively, with a dominance of polypropylene (PP) type of plastic in the pre-monsoon and high-density polyethylene (HDPE) in monsoon and post-monsoon seasons. HDPE and PP collected MPs during the monsoon season were further characterized for associated contaminants. Metal absorbance was detected using SEM-EDX mapping and ICP-MS. The presence of organic compounds (OCs) was analyzed using GC-MS. MPs exhibit distinct associations with metals, among which the HDPE pellet morphotype exhibits a higher range of metal adsorption. Total 61 different OCs were associated with MPs. The HDPE pellets contained the highest amounts of hydrophobic organic compounds. PP pellets were found to contain triglycerides, fatty aldehydes, and alkaloids, along with HOCs. Among morphotypes, pellet forms of MPs were found to adsorb more contaminants. These co-contaminants infiltrate the study area through sewage runoff and shoreline debris deposition, subsequently interacting with MPs. Furthermore, the MP diversity was studied by employing the MP diversity integrated index, which suggests that most of the MP diversity was observed in the pre-monsoon period. The pollution load index employed an MP risk assessment, which presented a low degree of MP contamination. In contrast, the polymer hazard index was calculated as 21650.3 in post-monsoon, placing the area under the extreme danger category. It is evident from the data that the types of MP is more important than their number. Thus, MP morphotypes have importance in the adsorption of co-contaminants.

Microplastics removal mechanisms in constructed wetlands and their impacts on nutrient (nitrogen, phosphorus and carbon) removal: A critical review

Microplastics (MPs) are now prevalent in aquatic ecosystems, prompting the use of constructed wetlands (CWs) for remediation. However, the interaction between MPs and CWs, including removal efficiency, mechanisms, and impacts, remains a subject requiring significant investigation. This review investigates the removal of MPs in CWs and assesses their impact on the removal of carbon, nitrogen, and phosphorus. The analysis identifies crucial factors influencing the removal of MPs, with substrate particle size and CWs structure playing key roles. The review highlights substrate retention as the primary mechanism for MP removal. MPs hinder plant nitrogen uptake, microbial growth, community composition, and nitrogen-related enzymes, reducing nitrogen removal in CWs. For phosphorus and carbon removal, adverse effects of MPs on phosphorus elimination are observed, while their impact on carbon removal is minimal. Further research is needed to understand their influence fully. In summary, CWs are a promising option for treating MPs-contaminated wastewater, but the intricate relationship between MPs and CWs necessitates ongoing research to comprehend their dynamics and potential consequences.

Accumulation characteristics and ecological risk evaluation of microplastics in sediment cores from the artificial reef area and surrounding seas of Haizhou Bay, north China

One significant "sink" for microplastic (MP) pollution is the sediments. There's a considerable lack of reliable data regarding the historical status of MPs contamination in sediments within marine ranching. In this research, the study area encompassed Haizhou bay marine ranching and adjacent seas. The primary objective was to explore the potential relationships between the accumulation of MPs and both the sample depth and sediment characteristics within the cores. The results unveiled significant contamination of MPs within the sediment cores. The average MPs concentration of sediment was 1.01 ± 1.28 n/g. Fibrous polymers and particles smaller than 1000 μm were frequently found in the sediment. The abundance of MPs exhibited a tendency to decrease with an increase in sediment depth. Artificial reefs and currents affected on MPs distribution in sediment cores. The accumulation of MPs showed a significant correlation (P < 0.05) with the sediment content of different particle sizes, suggesting that the composition of sediment can serve as an indicator of the abundance of MPs. The risk of MP pollution in the sediments of the study area was assessed by establishing a risk assessment model using concentration data of MPs and polymer types. Due to the higher hazard score of polymers (PA and PET) in MPs, the Polymer hazard index (PHI) was elevated to grade II. However, it had a Pollution load index (PLIzone) value of 1.95 (level I). This suggested that contamination was minimal, yet the ecological risk remained relatively high. The ecological risk assessment of MPs served as the foundation for gaining a detailed understanding of the distribution characteristics of MPs. It also furnished essential data support for conducting a comprehensive assessment, developing feasible management strategies, and establishing water quality standards related to plastic waste.

Beneath the water column: Uncovering microplastic pollution in the sublittoral coastal sediments of the Canary Islands, Spain

Marine ecosystems pollution by microplastics (MPs) is a global problem of special concern. The present study examines the prevalence and distribution of MPs and cellulosic particles in sublittoral coastal sediments of the Canary Islands archipelago (Spain). At twenty-six different locations alongside seven islands, three samples were taken parallel to the shoreline between 1 and 10 m depth (n = 78). Sediment samples were primarily digested with a H2O2 solution followed by four flotations in a saturated NaCl solution. The mean concentration obtained was 3.9 ± 1.6 items/g of dry weight. A similar distribution pattern was observed across all islands concerning particles morphology, color, size and composition: mainly colorless/translucent and blue fibers (60.0%). Additionally, fragments were also found, and to a much lesser extent microbeads, films and tangled messes. MicroFourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy analysis of 12.5% of the fibers, showed that they were mainly cellulosic (54.5%) -either natural or semisynthetic- followed by polyester (22.7%) and acrylic (4.5%). The potential correlation between particle distribution in nearshore sediments and wave intensity was also explored. This work provides the first comprehensive report on the current MPs content of the seabed of the region.

Probabilistic risk assessment of microplastics on aquatic biota in coastal sediments

As an emerging form of pollution, microplastic contamination of the coastal ecosystems is one of the world's most pressing environmental concerns. Coastal sediments have been polluted to varying degrees by microplastics, and their ubiquitous presence in sediments poses a threat to marine organisms. However, there is currently no ecological risk assessment of microplastics on aquatic biota in sediments. This study, for the first time, established a new procedure to evaluate the toxicity of microplastics on aquatic biota in sediments, based on the probabilistic risk assessment (PRA) concept. The choice of Zhelin Bay as the case study site was based on its severe pollution status. The average content of microplastics in the sediments of Zhelin Bay was 2054.17 items kg-1 dry weight, and these microplastics consisted of 46 different species. Microplastics in sediments exist in five different forms, with the film form being the main composition, and the majority of microplastics have particle sizes ranging from 100 to 500 μm. Correlation analysis (CA) reveals significant negative correlations between microplastic abundance, and Al2O3 and SiO2. The toxicity of microplastics, based on the PRA concept, suggests that Zhelin Bay surface sediments had a low probability (3.43%) of toxic effects on aquatic biota.

The pollution characteristics and risk assessment of microplastics in mollusks collected from the Bohai Sea

Microplastics (MPs) pollution in the marine environment has become a global problem. In this study, a number of 21 mollusk species (n = 2006) with different feeding habits were collected from 11 sites along the Bohai Sea for MPs uptake analysis. The MPs in mollusk samples were isolated and identified by micro-Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (μ-FTIR), and an assessment of the health risks of MPs ingested by mollusk consumption is also conducted. Approximately 91.9 % of the individuals among all the collected species inhaled MPs, and there was an average abundance of 3.30 ± 2.04 items·individual-1 or 1.04 ± 0.74 items·g-1 of wet weight. The shape of MPs was mainly fiber, and a total number of 8 polymers were detected, of which rayon had the highest detection rate (58.3 %). The highest abundance, uptake rate and polymer composition of MPs was observed in creeping types, suggesting that they might ingest these MPs from their food. The gastropod Siphonalia subdilatata contains the highest levels of MPs, which may increase the risk of human exposure if consumed whole without removing the digestive gland. The polymer risk level of MPs in these mollusks was Level III (H = 299), presenting harmful MPs such as polyvinyl chloride. In terms of human exposure risk, the average risk of human exposure to MPs through consumption of Bohai mollusks is estimated to be 3399 items·(capita·year)-1 (424-9349 items·(capita·year)-1). Overall, this study provides a basis for the ecological and health Risk assessment of MPs in mollusks collected from the coastline of China.

Psychrobacter species enrichment as potential microplastic degrader and the putative biodegradation mechanism in Shenzhen Bay sediment, China

Microplastic (MP) pollution has emerged as a pressing environmental concern due to its ubiquity and longevity. Biodegradation of MPs has garnered significant attention in combatting global MP contamination. This study focused on MPs within sediments near the sewage outlet of Shenzhen Bay. The objective was to elucidate the microbial communities in sediments with varying MPs, particularly those with high MP loads, and to identify microorganisms associated with MP degradation. The results revealed varying MP abundance, ranging from 211 to 4140 items kg-1 dry weight (d. w.), with the highest concentration observed near the outfall. Metagenomic analysis confirmed the enrichment of Psychrobacter species in sediments with high MP content. Psychrobacter accounted for ∼16.71% of the total bacterial community and 41.71% of hydrocarbon degrading bacteria at the S3 site, exhibiting a higher abundance than at other sampling sites. Psychrobacter contributed significantly to bacterial function at S3, as evidenced by the Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway and enzyme analysis. Notably, 28 enzymes involved in MP biodegradation were identified, predominantly comprising oxidoreductases, hydrolases, transferases, ligases, lyases, and isomerases. We propose a putative mechanism for MP biodegradation, involving the breakdown of long-chain plastic polymers and subsequent oxidation of short-chain oligomers, ultimately leading to thorough mineralization.

Interactions between MPs and PFASs in aquatic environments: A dual-character situation

Microplastics (MPs) and per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs) have drawn great attention as emerging threats to aquatic ecosystems. Although the literature to study the MPs and PFASs alone has grown significantly, our knowledge of the overlap and interactions between the two contaminations is scarce due to the unawareness of it. Actually, numerous human activities can simultaneously release MPs and PFASs, and the co-sources of the two are common, meaning that they have a greater potential for interactions. The direct interaction lies in the PFASs adsorption by MPs in water with integrated mechanisms including electrostatic and hydrophobic interactions, plus many influence factors. In addition, the existence and transportation of MPs and PFASs in the aquatic environment have been identified. MPs and PFASs can be ingested by aquatic organisms and cause more serious combined toxicity than exposure alone. Finally, curbing strategies of MPs and PFASs are overviewed. Wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) can be an effective place to remove MPs from wastewater, while they are also an important point source of MPs pollution in water bodies. Although adsorption has proven to be a successful curbing method for PFASs, more technological advancements are required for field application. It is expected that this review can help revealing the unheeded relationship and interaction between MPs and PFASs in aquatic environments, thus assisting the further investigations of both MPs and PFASs as a whole.

Assessing the Settling Velocity of Biofilm-Encrusted Microplastics: Accounting for Biofilms as an Equivalent to Surface Roughness

While it is well established that a biofilm contributes to the sinking of plastics, the underlying mechanisms of how it influences the vertical transport of plastics have not been well explained. In this context, our study dives into the intricate effects of biofouling on the settling velocity (Ws) of microplastics (MPs) within the fluid. We adopt the perspective that the biofilm is a form of surface roughness impacting the drag coefficient (Cd) and vertical settling of MPs. By advancing the biofouling process model, we simulate the temporal variations of density and biofilm thickness of biofouled floating MPs, accounting for realistic parameters and assuming a layer-by-layer growth of biofilm on plastisphere surfaces. MPs of polyethylene (PE) exhibit a quicker initiation of descent compared to their polypropylene (PP) counterparts. Furthermore, leveraging computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulation, the method to predict the Cd of spherical MPs with surface roughness is established. By treating the thickness of the biofilm as roughness height, an explicit method to predict the Ws of biofouled MPs is derived. The settling experiments for biofouled MPs conducted not only support the combination of the biofouling model and the explicit method to predict the Ws of biofouled MPs but also enhance the prediction accuracy by introducing a ratio parameter Co to better relate the equivalent surface roughness height (k) to the biofilm thickness (σ), i.e., k = Co·σ, where the recommended value of Co for spherical PP and PE MPs is between 0.5 to 0.8. This study, thus, provides new insights into the dynamics of biofouled MPs in hydraulic ecosystems.

Quantification of the vertical transport of microplastics by biodeposition of typical mariculture filter-feeding organisms

The tremendous loss of microplastics from the sea surface and the low density of microplastics found in the water column and sediments indicate that the oceans have mechanisms capable of transporting microplastics from the surface to the seafloor. These include physicochemical processes and biological influences from marine organisms that drive the vertical migration of microplastics. Little is known, however, about the biological processes involved in the deposition of plastics in the marine environment. A considerable number of mariculture filter-feeding organisms can consume substantial amounts of suspended substances in the water column, and these organisms are ideal candidates for depositing microplastics. In this study, we analyzed microplastic abundance in typical mariculture filter feeders, i.e., ascidians (Halocynthia roretzi), oysters (Crassostrea gigas), scallops (Chlamys farreri) and clams (Ruditapes philippinarum), quantified the number and characteristics of the microplastics they deposited in situ, and further compared microplastic biodeposition rates. Microplastics were present in feces and pseudofeces and sank to form biodeposits rather than accumulating to significant levels in organisms. Microplastics were found in significantly higher numbers in the biodeposits of mariculture organisms than in the control deposits (p < 0.01). The shape and color of the microplastics in the sediments were not impacted by the presence of organisms (p > 0.05), but the deposition of <1000 μm and positive-buoyancy (less dense than seawater) microplastics was significantly increased in the biodeposits (p < 0.05). The highest microplastic biodeposition rate was found in scallops (1.14 ± 0.07 items·ind-1·d-1 or 0.5 ± 0.03 items·g-1·d-1). These results suggest that mariculture filter-feeding organisms have important biodepositional functions that influence the fate of microplastics through the transfer of microplastics from the surface to the seafloor. This study could contribute to a better understanding of the biological plastic pump mechanisms in oceans.

Does water column stratification influence the vertical distribution of microplastics?

Microplastic pollution has been confirmed in all marine compartments. However, information on the sub-surface microplastics (MPs) abundance is still limited. The vertical distribution of MPs can be influenced by water column stratification due to water masses of contrasting density. In this study, we investigated the vertical distribution of MPs in relation to the water column structure at nine sites in the Kattegat/Skagerrak (Denmark) in October 2020.A CTD was used to determine the stratification and pycnocline depth before sampling. Plastic-free pump-filter sampling devices were used to collect MPs from water samples (1-3 m3) at different depths. MPs concentration (MPs m-3) ranged from 18 to 87 MP m-3 (Median: 40 MP m-3; n = 9) in surface waters. In the mid waters, concentrations ranged from 16 to 157 MP m-3 (Median: 31 MP m-3; n = 6), while at deeper depths, concentrations ranged from 13 to 95 MP m-3 (Median: 34 MP m-3; n = 9). There was no significant difference in the concentration of MPs between depths. Regardless of the depth, polyester (47%), polypropylene (24%), polyethylene (10%), and polystyrene (9%) were the dominating polymers. Approximately 94% of the MPs fell within the size range of 11-300 μm across all depths. High-density polymers accounted for 68% of the MPs, while low-density polymers accounted for 32% at all depths. Overall, our results show that MPs are ubiquitous in the water column from surface to deep waters; we did not find any impact of water density on the depth distribution of MPs despite the strong water stratification in the Kattegat/Skagerrak.

Zooplankton as a suitable tool for microplastic research

In recent years, significant efforts have been dedicated to measuring and comprehending the impact of microplastics (MPs) in the ocean. Despite harmonization guidelines for MPs research, discrepancies persist in the applied methodologies and future challenges, mostly for the smaller fractions (< 100 μm). Whether intentional or accidental, ingesting plastic particles by zooplankton can lead to incorporating this pollutant into aquatic food chains. Therefore, zooplankton can serve as a suitable proxy tool for assessing the presence of plastic particles in ocean waters. However, reliable information is essential for conducting experimental laboratory studies on the impact of MPs ingestion by zooplankton organisms. Using zooplankton as a research tool for MPs offers numerous advantages, including similar sampling methodologies and study techniques as MPs and particle data integration over space and time. The scientific community can gain novel perspectives by merging zooplankton studies with MPs research. This review explores key aspects of using zooplankton as a tool for MPs research in water samples, encompassing various views such as particles ingestion in natural environments, particle quantification in zooplankton samples (past and future), ecotoxicological and toxicology model studies. By leveraging the potential of zooplankton research, advancements can be made in developing innovative techniques for MPs analysis.

A beaker method for determination of microplastic concentration by micro-Raman spectroscopy

Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy method for measuring small microplastic (SMP) concentration in marine environment is time-consuming and labor-intensive due to sample pre-treatment. In contrast, Raman spectroscopy is less influenced by water and can directly measure SMP samples in water, making it a more efficient method to measure SMP concentration. Therefore, a method that can directly estimate the concentration of SMPs in water was developed, and the relationship between SMP concentration and experimental Raman spectra were established by testing with standard polyethylene (PE) samples. It was found that average spectra acquired in water solution could reflect characteristic peaks of the plastic after baseline correction. Further investigation found that there is a significant functional relationship between correlation coefficient of sample spectra and the concentration of PE particles, and such relationship can be modelled by Langmuir model. The empirical functional relationships can be used to estimate SMP concentrations by measuring average Raman spectra. The developed methodology is helpful for developing rapid SMP identification and monitoring methods in a more complex manner.•A method of directly measuring MP concentration in water is proposed.•Experimental procedures are provided.•Data analysis methods are outlined.

Alteration of microbial mediated carbon cycle and antibiotic resistance genes during plastisphere formation in coastal area

Microorganisms can attach on the surface of microplastics (MPs) through biological fouling process to form a diverse community called the "plastisphere", which has attracted extensive attention. Although the microbial structure and composition of biofilm have been studied, the knowledge of its microbial function and ecological risk is still limited. In this study, we investigated how the surface properties of MPs affect the biofilm communities and metabolic features under different environmental conditions, and explored the biofilm enrichment of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs). The results showed that the incubation time, habitat and MPs aging state significantly influenced the structure and composition of biofilm microbial communities, and a small amount of pathogens have been found in the MPs-attached biofilm. The microbial carbon utilization capacity of the biofilm in different incubation habitats varies greatly with highest metabolism capacity appear in the river. The utilization efficiency of different carbon sources is polymer > carbohydrate > amino acid > carboxylic acids > amine/amide, which indicates that the biofilm communities have selectivity between different types of carbon sources. More importantly, ARGs were detected in all the MPs samples and showed a trend of estuary > river > marine. The aged MPs can accumulate more ARGs than the virgin items. In general, MPs in the aquatic environment may become a carrier for pathogens and ARGs to spread to other environment, which may enhance their potential risks to the ecosystem and human health.

Accessing the intrinsic factors of carbonyl index of microplastics: Physical and spectral properties, baseline correction, calculation methods, and their interdependence

Carbonyl index (CI) is a measure of the degradation status of microplastics. While many studies address environmental factors of microplastic degradation, intrinsic factors like physical properties, spectral properties, baseline correction, and CI calculation methods are less explored. This research focused on these aspects using surface seawater samples. We found that color and shape have limited dependence on particle size or signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Baseline correction can significantly alter CI values, with the direction of the shift depending on the methods used. Additionally, most CI values before and after baseline correction and those calculated using different methods tend to be strongly correlated. Using the selected CI calculation methods, we found that CI values varied significantly by shape and color. CI's relation to the similarity between the sample and its pristine form suggests an alternative degradation measure. Our findings emphasize the need for standardized CI calculation methods.

Vertical distribution of microplastics in a river water column using an innovative sampling method

Due to limitations of sampling methods, subsurface water is usually a less well-investigated compartment of the water column when scientists assess microplastic contamination. In this study, microplastic (MP) contamination was assessed in a freshwater river both in surface and subsurface using an innovative sampling method. Microplastic contamination in the lower part of the water column, i.e., near-bottom water and in sediments, was also studied. Three sampling campaigns were carried out during different weather conditions: stormy, rainy, and dry in order to observe their influence on the microplastics vertical distribution. No significant difference was observed between the abundance and types of MPs in surface and subsurface water. The proportion of polymer with theoretical density < 1 (polypropylene d = 0.9, polyethylene d = 0.91-0.95) and polystyrene (d = 0.1-1.06) in the surface and subsurface samples was 73.5%, and this proportion drops to 40.8% for the samples located in the near-bottom water and the sediments. Our results indicate that the MP concentration of the different compartments analyzed can be significantly influenced by rainfall during and prior to the sampling day. This study highlights that in shallow rivers, surface water sampling is representative of the water column MP contamination, but that sampling without taking environmental conditions into account may lead to erroneous estimation of MPs concentration and flux entering the marine environment.

Microplastic in mangroves: A worldwide review of contamination in biotic and abiotic matrices

This review presents the spatial distribution (where) and the methods applied (how) in assessing Microplastics (MPs) contamination in sediments, water, and organisms in mangrove areas. We analyzed 53 articles on MPs in Asia, America, and Africa and produced by 359 authors, although very localized, lacking wide-scale coverage of mangrove coasts around the world. The results showed that most of studies provided MP's bulk characteristics (type, size, color, form), along with global gross reserves of MPs in the mangrove compartments. Investigations in mangrove areas are still relatively limited. Therefore, for future research, it is relevant to enhance spatial and temporal sampling of MP contamination and to establish standardized protocols to enable effective comparisons between mangrove areas, rivers, beaches, and coastal seas. In addition, it is crucial to investigate the role of MPs as carriers or vectors of other pollutants.

Simulation of seasonal transport of microplastics and influencing factors in the China Seas based on the ROMS model

Elucidating the mechanisms governing microplastic transport and spatial distribution in offshore waters is essential to microplastic control. However, current research on microplastic transport in the China Seas is largely restricted to small-scale investigations, which do not provide a comprehensive result. Therefore, in this study, we used the Regional Ocean Modeling System (ROMS) combined with the Lagrangian Transport (LTRANS v.2) model to investigate how microplastics are transported around the China Seas during different seasons and under climatological river discharge. Our findings showed that the microplastic pathways and spatial distributions exhibit marked seasonal variations controlled by circulation patterns in the China Seas, river discharge values, and the characteristics of the microplastic materials. Floating microplastics exhibited the longest transport distance in summer, when microplastics from the Pearl River could be transported up to 1375.8 km through the Tokara and Tsushima straits. The heavy pollution areas in summer were located in the South Yellow Sea and East China Sea, mainly resulting from the contribution of the Yangtze River (>66%). In autumn and winter, more than three-quarters of the microplastics beached off the south-central Chinese coast. In addition, simulating the vertical velocity of the water prolonged the time required for microplastics to reach the open ocean, thereby reducing the amount of microplastics entering the Pacific Ocean by 6% compared to the simulation without the vertical velocity of the water in summer. Microplastics with higher densities were generally transported shorter distances. The transmission distances of PET and PS were two orders of magnitude smaller than that of PE. This study enhances knowledge of the sources and fates of offshore microplastics and provides scientific support for offshore microplastic control.

Spatial distribution and historical trend of microplastic pollution in sediments from enclosed bays of South Korea

Seafloor sediments are an important sink for microplastics (MPs), and the vertical profile of MP accumulation in a sediment core represents historical pollution trends. In this study, MP (20-5000 μm) pollution in surface sediments of urban, aquaculture, and environmental preservation sites in South Korea was evaluated, and the historical trend was investigated using age-dated core sediments from the urban and aquaculture sites. The abundance of MPs ranked in the order of urban, aquaculture, and environmental preservation sites. Polymer types were more diverse at the urban site compared to other sites, and expanded polystyrene was dominant in the aquaculture site. An increase in MP pollution and polymer types was observed from bottom to top of cores, and historical trends of MP pollution reflect local influences. Our results indicate that the characteristics of MPs are determined by human activities, and MP pollution should be addressed according to the characteristics of each site.

Spatial distribution of polystyrene nanoplastics and small microplastics in the Bohai Sea, China

Micro- and nano-plastic (MNP) pollution has attracted public concerns. Currently, most environmental researches focus on large microplastics (MPs), while small MNPs that have great impacts on marine ecosystems are rarely reported. Understanding the pollution levels and distribution patterns of small MNPs could help assess their potential impacts on the ecosystem. Polystyrene (PS) MNPs were often used as models to assess their toxicity, hence, we collected 21 sites in a Chinese sea area (the Bohai Sea) to analyze their pollution level and horizontal distribution in surface water samples, and vertical distributions in five sites with the water depth >25 m. Samples were filtered by glass membranes (1 μm) to trap MPs, which were frozen, ground, dried, and detected by pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (pyGC-MS); while the nanoplastics (NPs) in the filtrate were captured with alkylated ferroferric oxide (Fe₃O₄) to form aggregates, which were separated by glass membrane (300 nm) filtration for pyGC-MS determination. Small PS MPs (1-100 μm) and NPs (<1 μm) were detected in 18 samples with the mass concentrations ranging from <0.015 to 0.41 μg/L, indicating that PS MNPs are widely present in Bohai Sea. Our study contributes to understanding the pollution levels and distribution patterns of MNPs (<100 μm) in the marine system and provides valuable data for their further risk assessment.

Quantitative assessment of microplastic contamination in muddy shores of Gulf of Khambhat, India

Microplastics (MPs) have become a global concern due to their widespread distribution in marine ecosystems. The present study was aimed to assess MPs contamination in 21 muddy shores sites situated in the Gulf of Khambhat. From each site, five samples (1 kg each) were collected. In the laboratory, the replicates were homogenated, out of which a 100 g sample was used for analysis. The total number of MPs, shape, colour, size and polymer composition of MPs were assessed. The MPs abundance ranged from 0.32 ± 0.18 particles/g (Jampore) to 2.81 ± 0.50 particles/g (Uncha Kotda) among different study sites. Moreover, threads were recorded maximum followed by films, foams and fragments. In case of MPs colour, black and blue coloured MPs occurred dominantly, with sizes ranging from 1 mm to 5 mm. FTIR analysis identified seven different types of plastic polymers, out of which polypropylene was the dominant plastic polymer (32.46 %) followed by polyurethane (32.16 %), acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (14.93 %), polystyrene (9.62 %), polyethylene terephthalate (4.61 %), polyethylene (3.71 %) and polyvinyl chloride (2.51 %). Based on the results of the Contamination factor (CF) value, Alang, Mahua, Ghogha and Uncha Kotda were identified as very high contaminated sites (CF ≥ 6). Pollution Load Index (PLI) value of entire study area revealed the Gulf of Khambhat as a polluted area with MPs contamination (PLI > 1). While value of Hazardous Index (H) identified 12 study sites as class-V risk category (H value > 10,000). Moreover, Pollution Risk Index (PRI) value revealed fifteen sites as very high contaminated sites (PRI > 1200). Pollution indices can be useful in predicting the level of MPs contamination at the study site. Overall, the present study provides the information on MPs contamination in the coastal region of the Gulf of Khambhat that can be used as a baseline data for future studies on the ecotoxicity of MPs on marine biota.

Plastic rain-Atmospheric microplastics deposition in urban and peri-urban areas of Patna City, Bihar, India: Distribution, characteristics, transport, and source analysis

Evidence of atmospheric microplastics (MPs) deposition in India is scarce though reports of MPs pollution in other environmental media exist. Henceforth, this study for the first time examines and compares the abundance, characteristics, transport, and source analysis of atmospheric MPs in the urban and peri-urban areas of Patna city, Bihar, India. Wet atmospheric fallout samples were collected and analyzed for MPs deposition rate. The results showed that the mean MPs concentrations at each site were 1959.6 ± 205 (urban) and 1320.4 ± 126 (peri-urban) MPs/m²/day. The deposited MPs were mainly transparent fibers and fragments with a mean size of 347.9 ± 189.2 µm. Polyethylene terephthalate and polypropylene were the most abundant polymer found at both sites. Morphological characteristics revealed surface degradation and deposition of metal contaminants on the identified MPs. Meteorological parameters (wind direction and rainfall intensity) were significantly associated with the distribution of atmospheric MPs in the study area. The cluster mean backward trajectory suggested vehicular emissions, construction activities, and waste mismanagement as the potential sources of MPs. Findings of the present work necessitates future studies in gaining a deeper understanding of the fate, movement, and potential health hazards associated with atmospheric MPs.

Seasonal and spatial variations in the distribution pattern, sources and impacts of microplastics along different coastal zones of Tamil Nadu, India

We investigated spatiotemporal variations of microplastics (MPs) in Coromandel Coast, Palk Bay, Gulf of Mannar, and West Coast of Tamil Nadu, India. MPs abundance varies from 37 ± 1.52 to 189 ± 9.02 items/kg in sediment and 23 ± 15.25 to 155.25 ± 4.16 items/L in water. Highest abundance in monsoon by riverine inflow transports plastic waste to the ocean. MPs sizes 0.5-1 mm are dominant in summer with 16 polymers, while 3-4 mm dominates the monsoon with 23 polymers. Carbonyl Index shows high MP oxidation (>0.31), unrelated to spatiotemporal changes. SEM-EDAX shows weathered MPs carrying hazardous metals. High MP diversity (MPDII = 0.77) of Coromandel Coast points to many sources of pollution and the need for immediate control measures. Pollution load values indicate low degree of MP pollution (<10), polymer hazard index shows level III (10-100) and IV (100-1000), and ecological risk assessment shows minor risks (<150) at present.
