Abstract
INTRODUCTION Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a sensorimotor disorder of sleep/wake regulation characterized by an urge to move the legs accompanied by a wide range of sensory symptoms, mainly affecting the lower limbs. An increased incidence of RLS has been demonstrated in Parkinson's disease (PD) and has been associated with severe motor and non-motor manifestations. We aimed to provide a reliable estimate of RLS prevalence and the clinical features associated with its occurrence in PD (PD-RLS). METHODS We performed a systematic literature search up to January 2024 using PubMed, Scopus, and PsycINFO databases. Articles were included if they provided data on PD patients with or without RLS, and these proportions were used to estimate the prevalence of PD-RLS. Clinical profile associated with PD-RLS was explored by comparing the clinical characteristics of PD patients with and without RLS. RESULTS Forty-six studies were included in the meta-analysis. Pooled RLS prevalence was 20 % of a total sample of 6990 PD patients and was associated with female sex, mixed motor phenotype, worse motor disturbances and functional disability, and a wide range of non-motor symptoms such as sleep disorders, cognitive and autonomic dysfunctions, and more severe neuropsychiatric manifestations. Sensitivity analyses indicated significant associations of PD-RLS with variables related to dopaminergic therapy. No association was found with serum ferritin, serum iron and hemoglobin levels. CONCLUSIONS The prevalence of PD-RLS exceeds that reported in the general population, suggesting the existence of a relationship between the two disorders. Dopaminergic treatment seems to play an ambivalent role relieving, worsening or "mimicking" RLS manifestations. However, the clinical profile of PD-RLS patients, characterized by a greater severity of non-motor symptoms, also suggests that neurotransmitter systems other than the dopaminergic one are involved in PD-RLS etiology.

Abstract
Comorbidity between Restless Legs Syndrome and Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder remains a matter of debate. This putative association, possibly reflecting a shared brain iron homeostasis and dopaminergic dysfunction, supports the hypothesis of a neurodevelopmental component in Restless Legs Syndrome pathogenesis. The aim of this study was to investigate Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder symptoms prevalence in adult patients with primary Restless Legs Syndrome compared to another ill group of patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome to control for the disease specific effects on psychiatric symptoms and a healthy individuals control group. Clinical data were obtained through standardized and validated self-administrated questionnaires evaluating Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder symptoms frequencies in 139 outpatients with idiopathic Restless Legs Syndrome, 111 patients with treated obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and 136 healthy subjects. Our findings demonstrate a higher prevalence of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms among both male and female patients with Restless Legs Syndrome, compared to obstructive sleep apnea syndrome patients and healthy subjects (33.3 and 43.5%, respectively, p < 0.001). Only women presented a strong relationship between Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder and Restless Legs Syndrome severity (p < 0.001). Male and female in the three groups showed similar Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder symptom prevalence. These findings indicate that Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder symptoms among adult patients with Restless Legs Syndrome populations are a robust phenomenon. These data provide arguments in favor of an enlargement of the clinical neuropsychological presentation of Restless Legs Syndrome and question the role of decreased brain iron of these psychiatric symptoms.

Abstract
Background Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a prevalent neuro-sensory disorder that impairs quality of life. In this systematic review and modelling study, we estimated the global and regional prevalence of RLS and its associated factors. Methods We searched PubMed, Embase, and Medline for population-based studies on RLS prevalence published up to 12 November 2023. The included studies reported prevalence using the International Restless Leg Syndrome Study Group's (IRLSSG) minimal diagnostic criteria without limitations on frequency, duration, or severity. We applied a multilevel multivariable mixed-effects meta-regression to generate the age-specific and sex-specific prevalence of RLS for high socio-demographic index (H-SDI) and low and middle socio-demographic index (LM-SDI) regions. We pooled odds ratios (ORs) for RLS associated factors using random-effects models. Finally, we derived the regional prevalence and cases of RLS based on an associated factor-based model. Results From 52 articles across 23 countries, the global RLS prevalence in 2019 was estimated to be 7.12% (95% confidence interval (CI) = 5.15-9.76) among adults 20-79 years of age, equating to 356.07 million (95% CI = 257.61-488.09) affected individuals. Prevalence was similar in H-SDI (7.29%; 95% CI = 5.04-10.41) and LM-SDI (7.10%; 95% CI = 5.16-9.70) regions, with the majority of cases in LM-SDI countries (323.06 million; 90.73%). Europe had the highest (7.60%; 95% CI = 5.44-10.52) and Africa the lowest regional prevalence (6.48%; 95% CI = 4.70-8.87). The Western Pacific Region, meanwhile, had the most cases (111.91 million; 95% CI = 80.93-153.42). Factors positively associated with RLS included advanced age (OR = 1.13; 95% CI = 1.04-1.24), smoking (OR = 1.46; 95% CI = 1.29-1.64), depression (OR = 1.71; 95% CI = 1.26-2.32), and diabetes (OR = 1.54; 95% CI = 1.19-1.97). Conclusions A considerable global burden of RLS exists. Effective strategies are needed to increase awareness and optimise resource allocation to address this often-overlooked condition. High-quality epidemiological investigations employing standardised and rigorous criteria for RLS are essential for addressing RLS burden more effectively. Registration PROSPERO: CRD42020161860.

Abstract
The goal of this review is to compile information on the use of physiotherapeutic treatments for the treatment of restless leg syndrome (RLS) and to classify the effectiveness of conservative methods in relieving the discomfort due to RLS. English literature found on PubMed, Google Scholar, and Scopus was used in the present review. According to the titles and matters of the abstracts, each literature item connected to RLS was retrieved, analyzed, and reviewed. The 24 papers that were considered admissible were those that included manual approaches, exercises, and alternative RLS management, which were then analyzed for data by the authors. A consistent trend in the data demonstrated benefits in lessening RLS symptom severity across the 24 papers that met the selection criteria. Patients were chosen based on clinical diagnostic standards, and the effectiveness of stretching, exercise therapy, yoga, vibration therapy, reflexology and massage, muscular relaxation techniques, and electrical stimulation was determined. Our findings indicated that each type of therapy significantly affected the manifestations of the illness. Stretching, fitness training, and reflexology were very beneficial, with no side effects and shorter intervention periods.

Abstract
Background Diagnostic questionnaire that are available for restless legs syndrome does not include items related to RLS mimics and, hence, increases chances of false positive cases. This study aimed at modification and validation of RLS-diagnostic Questionnaire. Methods During modification, additional items were identified, developed, and subjected to evaluation by experts. Experts were requested to validate the content of each item. Based on their responses, content validity indices (average and universal agreement) were calculated. It was then translated to Hindi and validated in a clinical population that included patients with RLS, somatic symptoms disorder, anxiety, other RLS mimics, and osteoarthritis. In addition, a group of healthy controls was also included. Face, concurrent, and discriminant validities were calculated. Results Among 209 subjects, nearly 40 subjects had clinical diagnosis of RLS, osteoarthritis, somatic-symptoms-disorder, and anxiety disorder, each. In addition, 16 patients had other RLS mimics (akathisia, varicose veins, BFS, leg-cramps, chronic insomnia) and 30 were healthy controls. After multiple revisions, content validity indices achieved a score of 1 for m-RLS-DQ. Sensitivity and specificity of m-RLS-DQ v. 1.4 for the diagnosis of RLS were 94.9% and 94.1%, respectively. For the diagnosis of RLS, PPV was 78.7%, and NPV was 98.7% with an accuracy of 94.3%. Less than one fourth of participants having chronic insomnia, somatic symptoms disorder, anxiety disorder, and knee osteoarthritis were found to be false positive on m-RLS-DQ; however, none of the healthy controls were found positive on m-RLS-DQ. Concurrent validity with clinical diagnosis of RLS was 0.83 (P < 0.001). Discriminant validity with somatic symptoms disorder was -0.14 (P = 0.03) and with osteoarthritis -0.24 (P < 0.001). Conclusion m-RLS-DQ is a valid instrument with acceptable psychometric properties, which can be used for the screening as well as diagnosis of RLS in clinical practice and research studies.

Abstract
SUMMARY This article summarizes restless legs syndrome (RLS), periodic limb movements of sleep, and periodic limb movement disorder. RLS is a common sleep disorder with a prevalence of 5% to 15% in the general population. RLS can present in childhood, and incidence increases with age. RLS can be idiopathic or secondary to iron deficiency, chronic renal failure, peripheral neuropathy, and medications such as antidepressants (with higher rates for mirtazapine and venlafaxine, while bupropion may reduce symptoms at least in the short term), dopamine antagonists (neuroleptic antipsychotic agents and antinausea medications), and possibly antihistamines. Management includes pharmacologic agents (dopaminergic agents, alpha-2 delta calcium channel ligands, opioids, benzodiazepines) and nonpharmacologic therapies (iron supplementation, behavioral management). Periodic limb movements of sleep are an electrophysiologic finding commonly accompanying RLS. On the other hand, most individuals with periodic limb movements of sleep do not have RLS. The clinical significance of the movements has been argued. Periodic limb movement disorder is a distinct sleep disorder that arises in individuals without RLS and is a diagnosis of exclusion.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present study aimed to explore the descriptive and analytic epidemiology of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in the older Greek population, with a specific focus on lifestyle indicators. METHODS Baseline data from the randomly selected non-demented older participants of the population-based HELIAD cohort were analyzed. Multivariable binary logistic regression with RLS diagnosis as the dichotomous dependent outcome was performed. Demographic, socioeconomic, anthropometric, dietary, sleep-related and psychological parameters, physical activity, use of psychoactive substances and personal medical history were investigated for potential associations. RESULTS A total of 133 from the eligible sample of 1,838 participants were diagnosed with RLS. The mean age-sex standardized prevalence of RLS among the elderly was estimated at 6.1% (95%CI = 5.0-7.2), with a female (8.0%, 95%CI = 6.4-9.6) to male (3.7%, 95%CI = 2.4-5.1) ratio of 2.1. The prevalence of RLS peaked during the 8th decade of life and diminished thereafter. The positive associations of RLS with female sex [OR = 2.06, 95%CI = (1.19-3.57)], anxiety levels [assessed by the 22-point HADS scale, OR = 1.08, 95%CI = (1.03-1.13)] and traumatic brain injury [OR = 2.22, 95%CI = (1.37-3.62)] were reproduced. Good sleep quality was related to 55% [95%CI~(24-83%)] lower odds of having RLS in comparison with both poor and moderate quality. Adherence to the Mediterranean dietary pattern [assessed by a 55-point scale, OR = 1.06, 95%CI = (1.01-1.11)], and low daily energy intake [low-moderate vs. low: OR = 0.45, 95%CI = (0.26-0.79)]; [moderate-high vs. low: OR = 0.69, 95%CI = (0.40-1.22)]; [high vs. low: OR = 0.31, 95%CI = (0.13-0.69)] were related to RLS for the first time. CONCLUSIONS More emphasis should be placed on the dietary-nutritional aspects of RLS.

Abstract
Background There are only limited reports on the prevalence of restless legs syndrome (RLS) in patients with psychiatric disorders. The present study aimed to evaluate the prevalence and clinical correlates in psychiatric inpatients in Germany and Switzerland. Methods This is a multicenter cross-sectional study of psychiatric inpatients with an age above 18 years that were diagnosed and evaluated face-to-face using the International RLS Study Group criteria (IRLSSG) and the International RLS severity scale (IRLS). In addition to sociodemographic and biometric data, sleep quality and mood were assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI), the Insomnia Severity Index (ISI), the Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS), and the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9). In addition to univariate statistics used to describe and statistically analyze differences in variables of interest between patients with and without RLS, a logistic model was employed to identify predictors for the occurrence of RLS. Results The prevalence of RLS in a sample of 317 psychiatric inpatients was 16.4%, and 76.9% of these were diagnosed with RLS for the first time. RLS severity was moderate to severe (IRLS ± SD: 20.3 ± 8.4). The prevalences in women (p = 0.0036) and in first-degree relatives with RLS (p = 0.0108) as well as the body mass index (BMI, p = 0.0161) were significantly higher among patients with RLS, while alcohol consumption was significantly lower in the RLS group. With the exception of atypical antipsychotics, treatment with psychotropic drugs was not associated with RLS symptoms. Regarding subjective sleep quality and mood, scores of the PSQI (p = 0.0007), ISI (p = 0.0003), and ESS (p = 0.0005) were higher in patients with RLS, while PHQ-9 scores were not different. A logistic regression analysis identified gender (OR 2.67; 95% CI [1.25; 5.72]), first-degree relatives with RLS (OR 3.29; 95% CI [1.11; 9.73], ESS score (OR 1.09; 95% CI [1.01; 1.17]), and rare alcohol consumption (OR 0.45; 95% CI [0.22; 0.94] as predictors for RLS. Conclusions Clinically significant RLS had a high prevalence in psychiatric patients. RLS was associated with higher BMI, impaired sleep quality, and lower alcohol consumption. A systematic assessment of restless legs symptoms might contribute to improve the treatment of psychiatric patients.

Abstract
Background
Restless legs syndrome (RLS), a prevalent and treatable entity, has high impact on quality of life, requiring a better screening tool for its early detection. Thus, present study aimed to derive a Hindi RLS (RLS-H) screening tool for its use in Indian population.
Materials and Methods
RLS-H screening tool, derived by translating first four criteria of 2012 revised International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG) diagnostic criteria in Hindi and was validated in 50 RLS and 50 non-RLS patients. This validated RLS-H tool was used to screen 1,066 patients attending neurology clinic for assessing its diagnostic accuracy. Internal consistency, discriminatory validity, and various diagnostic yields were calculated. IRLSSG was used as gold standard for final diagnosis of RLS.
Results
RLS-H screening tool had an internal consistency of 0.910. No correlation was found between RLS-H screening tool and Epworth sleepiness scale, Pittsburgh sleep quality index, or International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group rating scale indicating satisfactory discriminant validity. Prevalence of RLS was 13.6%. The question (Q)1 had highest sensitivity (97.9%) and Q4 had highest specificity (92.66%). Thus, its combinations (Q1 + Q4) along with addition of Q2 or Q3 were compared for best combination of diagnostic accuracy. A minimum cutoff value of RLS-H screening tool was 2.5 for considering patients requiring detailed RLS evaluation.
Conclusion
RLS-H screening tool can be used as a screening tool for early detection of RLS among susceptible patients. Patients answering “yes” to more than two questions (cutoff = 2.5) or “yes” to Q1 and Q4 should be interviewed and assessed for RLS.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) and Parkinson's disease (PD) remains controversial, with epidemiologic and descriptive evidence suggesting some potential overlap while mechanistic/genetic studies suggesting relative independence of the conditions. OBJECTIVE To examine a known, objectively measured endophenotype for RLS, periodic leg movements (PLMS) in sleep, in patients with PD and relate that objective finding to restless legs symptoms. METHODS We performed polysomnography for one (n = 8) or two (n = 67) consecutive nights in 75 PD patients and examined the association of PLMS with restless legs symptoms. RESULTS We found no association between restless legs symptoms and PLMS in PD. Prevalence of both was similar to data reported previously in other PD samples. CONCLUSION We interpret these results as suggesting that restless legs symptoms in PD patients may represent a different phenomenon and pathophysiology than RLS in the non-PD population.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW Diabetic neuropathy from type I diabetes (DMI), type II diabetes (DMII), or gestational diabetes commonly occurs concurrently with restless legs syndrome (RLS) with an estimated prevalence in DMII specifically of 17.7 to 45%. The diagnosis of RLS can be obscured by symptoms of peripheral neuropathy, which may be similar to those of RLS, but also by other RLS mimics, including nocturnal leg cramps or akathisia. The purpose of this review is to outline a framework for considering comorbid diabetic neuropathy and RLS by discussing RLS and its association with peripheral nerve disease, diabetes, and sleep disruption. Treatment for patients with both diabetic neuropathy and RLS may differ from treatment of persons with solely RLS or diabetic neuropathy; key points in this difference are discussed. Finally, a treatment algorithm is provided to guide the approach to treating patients with comorbid RLS and diabetic neuropathy. RECENT FINDINGS There have been several revisions of the RLS diagnostic criteria which in addition to the main four essential criteria of having (1) an urge to move the legs which is (2) exacerbated by rest, (3) relieved temporarily by movement, and (4) occurs in the evening or night time, now includes a consideration for RLS mimics, requiring that (5) symptoms not be explained by any other symptoms. Additionally, the treatment of both diabetic neuropathy and RLS has evolved to focus first on controlling the blood glucose, avoiding exacerbating medications, supplementing with iron if serum ferritin is low, and starting pharmacotherapy with alpha-2-delta ligands such as gabapentin or pregabalin. Knowledge of the prevalence of peripheral neuropathy with RLS, revised RLS diagnostic criteria, and a general treatment algorithm for the combination of peripheral neuropathy and RLS is critical to providing appropriate care to patients suffering from these two diseases.

Abstract
Chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) is one of the most serious adverse effects of chemotherapy. We experienced carboplatin (CBDCA)-induced akathisia-like CIPN, which was significantly attenuated by pregabalin administration, and report its treatment. A man in his 40s was administered CBDCA + pemetrexed (PEM) as the third-line treatment for recurrent malignant pleural mesothelioma. He rarely experienced mild akathisia-like symptoms on his feet before the diagnosis. The patient claimed that he exhibited mild degradation of the symptoms in the previous cisplatin (CDDP) + PEM treatment without the need for pharmacotherapy. Symptoms notably worsened approximately 7 days after the first cycle of CBDCA + PEM and did not disappear. Furthermore, symptoms worsened during the daytime and became milder at night. Lorazepam (0.5 mg) was administered 3 times a day from day 14 but was not effective. Finally, we evaluated the symptoms to be derived from CBDCA-induced neuropathy as he experienced the same symptoms in CDDP + PEM and did not have suspicious pathology or medicines for akathisia development. We decided to administer 75 mg pregabalin twice daily, resulting in significant symptom improvement. He also complained that he felt the symptoms 10 h after the previous pregabalin dose, suggesting that pregabalin was effective, and its effect weakened or disappeared as time progressed. Akathisia-like symptoms caused by CBDCA-induced CIPN are rare, but they significantly reduce the quality of life. Pregabalin was significantly effective in this case; therefore, we suggest that a detailed symptom interview and selection of the medicine, based upon the action mechanism, are necessary.

Abstract
Background Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) has a broad spectrum from respiratory and nasopharyngeal symptoms, cerebrovascular diseases, impaired consciousness, and skeletal muscle injury. Emerging evidence has indicated the neural spread of this novel coronavirus. Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological, sensorimotor disorder, but highly under diagnosis disorder. Restless anal syndrome as restless legs syndrome variant associated with COVID-19 has been previously not published. We report a case presenting with restless anal syndrome following COVID-19. Case presentation Although a 77-year-old male with COVID-19 improved to normal respiratory function 21 days after admission and treatment of favipiravir 200 mg per day for 14 days and dexamethasone 6.6 mg per day for 5 days, the insomnia and anxiety symptoms remained. Several weeks after discharge, he gradually began to experience restless, deep anal discomfort, approximately 10 cm from the perineal region. The following features were observed in the anal region; urge to move is essential, with worsening with rest, improvement with exercise, and worsening at evening. Colonoscopy revealed internal haemorrhoids without other rectal lesions. Neurological findings including deep tendon reflex, perineum loss of sensory and spinal cord injury, revealed no abnormalities. Diabetes militias, kidney dysfunction and iron deficiency status were not confirmed. Family history of RLS and periodic limb movements were not observed. Clonazepam at 1.5 mg per day resulted in the alleviation restless anal discomfort. Conclusions We reported a case presenting with restless anal syndrome following affection of COVID-19 as restless legs syndrome variant. This case fulfilled 4 essential features of RLS, urge to move, worsening with rest, improvement with exercise, and worsening at evening. To date, no case of restless anal syndrome associated with COVID-19 has been previously published. This case report may reflect the associative impacts of COVID-19 on the neuropsychiatric state. The long-term outcomes of neuropsychiatric conditions should continue to be monitored.

Abstract
Background Essential tremor (ET) is among the most prevalent movement disorders. Comprehensive reviews of disease prevalence were published in 1998 and 2010 but not since then. We reviewed the prevalence of ET in population-based epidemiological studies, derived a precise summary estimate of prevalence from these studies, and examined differences in prevalence across studies. We used two methods: a descriptive-analytical approach and a meta-analysis. Methods A PUBMED search yielded 14 published papers since the 2010 review. Results There were 42 population-based prevalence studies (23 countries and 6 continents). In a meta-analysis, pooled prevalence (all ages) = 1.33%, with statistically significant heterogeneity across studies (I2 = 99.3%, p < 0.0001). In additional descriptive analyses, median crude prevalence (all ages) = 0.4% and mean = 0.67%. Prevalence increased markedly with age, and especially with advanced age. In the meta-analysis, prevalence (age ≥ 65 years) = 5.79%, and in descriptive analyses, median crude prevalence (age ≥ 60-65) = 5.9% and mean = 8.0%. In the oldest age groups, median prevalence = 9.3%, with several studies reporting values >20%. The prevalence increased by 74% for every decade increase in age (p < 0.0001). Gender did not impact the prevalence of ET (p = 0.90). Discussion Precise prevalence estimates are important because they form the numerical basis for public health initiatives and offer clues about underlying biological factors of mechanistic importance. The prevalence of ET among those age ≥ 65 is similar to that reported for Alzheimer's disease in elders, suggesting that ET may be the most common neurodegenerative disease.

Abstract
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common disorder. The population prevalence is 1.5% to 2.7% in a subgroup of patients having more severe RLS with symptoms occurring 2 or more times a week and causing at least moderate distress. It is important for primary care physicians to be familiar with the disorder and its management. Much has changed in the management of RLS since our previous revised algorithm was published in 2013. This updated algorithm was written by members of the Scientific and Medical Advisory Board of the RLS Foundation based on scientific evidence and expert opinion. A literature search was performed using PubMed identifying all articles on RLS from 2012 to 2020. The management of RLS is considered under the following headings: General Considerations; Intermittent RLS; Chronic Persistent RLS; Refractory RLS; Special Circumstances; and Alternative, Investigative, and Potential Future Therapies. Nonpharmacologic approaches, including mental alerting activities, avoidance of substances or medications that may exacerbate RLS, and oral and intravenous iron supplementation, are outlined. The choice of an alpha2-delta ligand as first-line therapy for chronic persistent RLS with dopamine agonists as a second-line option is explained. We discuss the available drugs, the factors determining which to use, and their adverse effects. We define refractory RLS and describe management approaches, including combination therapy and the use of high-potency opioids. Treatment of RLS in pregnancy and childhood is discussed.

Abstract
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) affects about 20% of all pregnant women. RLS symptoms are usually moderate to severe in intensity during pregnancy and can result in insomnia, depression, and other adverse outcomes. Although iron deficiency has been implicated as a potential etiological factor, other mechanisms can also play a role. Nonpharmacologic methods are the primary recommended form of treatment for RLS in pregnancy and lactation. Iron supplementation may be considered when the serum ferritin is low; however, several patients are unable to tolerate iron or have severe symptoms despite oral iron replacement. Here, we describe a case of severe RLS in pregnancy and illustrate the dilemmas in diagnosis and management. We review the literature on the prevalence, diagnosis, course, possible underlying pathophysiologic mechanisms and complications of RLS in pregnancy. We describe current best evidence on the efficacy, and safety of nonpharmacologic therapies, oral and intravenous iron supplementation, as well as other medication treatments for RLS in pregnancy and lactation. We highlight gaps in the literature and provide a practical guide for the clinical management of RLS in pregnancy and during breastfeeding.

Abstract
This quantitative study investigated self-reported sleep, mental health and trauma related nocturnal behaviours among South Sudanese Australians (SSA), examined sex differences in their responses, and sought to determine risk factors for insomnia in this population. Comparisons were also made to a general Australian (AUS) sample of 1,512 respondents, obtained in a previously published study using the same questions regarding sleep difficulties. Self-reports of sleep difficulties, psychological distress (Kessler Psychological Distress Scale, K10), and nocturnal post-traumatic stress symptoms (Pittsburgh Sleep Questionnaire Inventory-Addendum, PSQI-A) were obtained from 117 former refugees (aged 16-60 years) who had been resettled for a decade on average. A key finding was that SSA men (n = 62) reported many more problems compared to both SSA women and AUS men. These problems included high rates of clinical insomnia (32%), clinical-level nocturnal post-trauma symptoms (57%), restless legs (31%), daytime sleepiness (40%), fatigue (43%), and waking unrefreshed (55%). Nearly one in five SSA men had "very high psychological distress," a rate 10 times higher than that of men in Victoria and twice as high as SSA women. Analyses suggest that for many SSA men memories and dreams of past traumas may be affecting sleep health, with some improvement over time. It was concluded that men within the South Sudanese Australian community report hitherto unrecognised significant problems with their sleep. The findings are consistent with the interpretation that unresolved pre-migration trauma stress may be affecting the sleep of about half of the South Sudanese men in Australia.

Abstract
This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated the diagnostic accuracy of screening instruments for restless legs syndrome (RLS) and reports sensitivity, specificity, positive (PPV) and negative predictive values (NPV). Searches for primary studies were conducted in electronic databases. Of the 1541 citations identified, 52 were included in the meta-analysis. The methodological quality of each study was evaluated using QUADAS-2. Only 14 studies assessed the reference standard in all participants or in all screen-positives and a selection of screen-negatives. Bivariate meta-analysis of these 14 studies estimated median sensitivity to be 0.88 (0.72-0.96) and specificity 0.90 (0.84-0.93); based on a population prevalence of 5%, the calculated PPV was 0.31 (0.27-0.34). For all 52 studies, with either full or partial verification of RLS status, we constructed best-case scenario sensitivities and specificities at pre-defined levels of prevalence: across all samples, when prevalence is 5%, the median best-case scenario PPV is 0.48 with significant between-study heterogeneity. No RLS screening instruments can currently be recommended for use without an expert clinical interview in epidemiological studies. For conditions with statistically low prevalence such as RLS, the specificity, not the sensitivity, of a screening instrument determines true prevalence. Therefore, future instruments should maximize specificity. We provide guidelines on RLS ascertainment in epidemiological studies that requires a two-step process with clinical interview following a screening test, and given the poor reporting quality of many RLS epidemiological studies, we include an RLS reporting checklist.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Previous studies suggest associations between restless leg syndrome (RLS) and atherosclerosis, but these have primarily been based upon subjective atherosclerotic measures. OBJECTIVE We evaluated associations between RLS and an objective indicator of atherosclerosis, namely carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT). METHODS In this cross-sectional study among 30,097 Canadian Longitudinal Study on Aging (CLSA) participants, we used a four-item questionnaire to screen for probable-RLS. cIMT was measured at the bifurcation of the common carotid artery. Associations were tested with linear regression adjusting for age, sex, ferritin, pulmonary disease, smoking, alcohol, physical activity, anxiety, depression, and other sleep diagnoses. RESULTS Among 26,304 included participants, 2047 (7.8%) had probable-RLS. Mean cIMT was higher (0.755 ± 0.17 vs 0.736 ± 0.17, P < 0.001) in those with RLS, even after excluding those without prior atherosclerotic diseases (0.740 ± 0.17 vs 0.723 ± 0.16, P = 0.016). CONCLUSION RLS is associated with objective measures of atherosclerosis. © 2020 International Parkinson and Movement Disorder Society.

Abstract
There is evidence of a higher prevalence of restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED) in individuals with spinocerebellar ataxia type 3 (SCA3), although the factors underlying this association remain unknown. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence of RLS/WED in SCA3 patients and to investigate which factors of SCA3 patients are associated with presence of RLS/WED. From February to August of 2006, we carried out clinical interviews in 40 controls and 40 SCA3 patients, diagnosed and followed up at Faculty of Medicine of Ribeirão Preto, University of São Paulo. Twenty-seven SCA3 patients were submitted to a detailed clinical protocol, electroneuromyography, blood work up, polysomnography (PSG), suggested immobilization test (SIT), and magnetic resonance image (MRI). RLS/WED was found in 27.5% of SCA3 patients and 2.5% of normal controls (p = 0.003). The factors related to RLS/WED in SCA3 patients were female gender, age at start of the symptoms of ataxia after 30 years, presence of peripheral neuropathy, and documented iron deficiency. Among SCA3 patients, those with RLS showed higher values of maximal discomfort level and discomfort level sum compared to non-RLS individuals on SIT. There is a relation between RLS/WED and SCA3, which seems to be resultant of different factors whose identification could improve the quality of assistance to those patients as well as to promote a better comprehension of the pathophysiology of both RLS/WED and SCA3.

Abstract
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) affects one in five pregnant women. This review aims to synthesise evidence regarding gestational RLS and its consequences on pregnant women and neonates. Search of Embase, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, Maternity and Infant Care and Scopus was conducted in July 2018 using MeSH headings and keywords for 'restless legs syndrome' and 'pregnancy' or 'birth'. Our search identified 16 eligible studies from 12 countries published between 2004 and 2018 concerning gestational RLS and one or more maternal, delivery or neonatal outcomes. The most consistent associations were observed between gestational RLS and increased risks of gestational hypertension, pre-eclampsia, and peripartum depression. There were mixed findings for caesarean delivery, preterm birth and low birth weight, with the majority reporting no association with gestational RLS. Gestational RLS was not associated with postpartum haemorrhage, gestational diabetes, fetal distress, or low Apgar scores. Future research is needed to investigate whether effective treatment of RLS can mitigate these potential harms. Validated methods for diagnosing RLS in pregnancy would support research in this growing field.

Abstract
Restless legs syndrome is a common but still underdiagnosed neurologic disorder, characterized by peculiar symptoms typically occurring in the evening and at night, and resulting in sleep disruption and daily functioning impairment. This disease can affect subjects of all age ranges and of both sexes, manifesting itself with a broad spectrum of severity and deserving special attention in certain patient categories, in order to achieve a correct diagnosis and an effective treatment. The diagnosis of restless legs syndrome can be challenging in some patients, especially children and elderly people, and an effective treatment might be far from being easy to achieve after some years of drug therapy, notably when dopaminergic agents are used. Moreover, the pathophysiology of this disorder offers an interesting example of interaction between genetics and the environment, considering strong iron metabolism involvement and its interaction with recognized individual genetic factors. Therefore, this syndrome allows clinicians to verify how lifespan and time can modify diagnosis and treatment of a neurological disorder.

Abstract
BACKGROUND The effect of gastrointestinal system disorders on Restless Legs Syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED) has been previously demonstrated by using serological tests. However, this association has not been supported by histopathological studies so far. OBJECTIVE To investigate the relationship between RLS/WED, upper endoscopic imaging and histopathological results in patients diagnosed with RLS who underwent endoscopy because of gastrointestinal system (GIS) complaints. METHODS Case-control study, including 100 patients diagnosed with RLS who presented dyspeptic complaints and underwent upper GIS endoscopy and 106 age- and sex-matched controls. RLS diagnosis was evaluated according to the four main diagnostic criteria determined by the International RLS Study Group. All patients underwent upper GIS endoscopic intervention and at least one gastric and/or antral biopsy. RESULTS There was no significant difference between patients and controls in relation to endoscopically seen gastric ulcer, duodenal ulcer, gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) findings and Helicobacter pylori (HP) positivity (p>0.05). Intestinal metaplasia and mucosal atrophy were more common in RLS/WED patients compared to controls (p=0.026 and p=0.017, respectively). Additionally, ferritin levels were found to be lower than the reference value. CONCLUSIONS The detection of increased severity of intestinal metaplasia, mucosal atrophy, and gastric inflammation in RLS/WED patients with dyspeptic complaints may entail the close gastrointestinal system evaluation of these patients. However, larger randomized and controlled trials are required on this subject where patients are evaluated by upper GIS endoscopic biopsy.

Abstract
Many people have a habit of moving their legs and believe that this behavior is due to the restless legs syndrome (RLS), a highly prevalent neurological condition that greatly impairs the quality of life of affected individuals. This behavioral pattern, characterized by the habit of moving one's legs and feet, may be an important confounding factor in the diagnosis of RLS. OBJECTIVE To describe the main movements associated with this benign behavioral state to characterize a possible clinical condition that can contribute to the differential diagnosis of RLS. METHODS Experienced sleep specialists, who primarily see RLS patients listed the most frequent movements people without RLS report while describing their suspected RLS. We first compiled a list of the lower-limb movements described by the specialists. Then, one of the authors (KC) carried out all movements of the list on camera to obtain a video footage. This footage was sent to one of the authors, EPC, who, alongside a group of students, drew graphic representations (cartoons) of the recorded movements. RESULTS The panel of sleep experts described 13 leg movements commonly reported by their patients. The experts reported 11 simple movements and two combined movements. CONCLUSION In this study we developed an instrument that allows us to oppose and distinguish a pathological condition (RLS) from a behavioral phenomenon. This state of behavioral leg fidgeting needs to be better characterized and may eventually be recognized as a clinical entity per se.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The objective was to evaluate the association between restless legs syndrome (RLS) with generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), major depression disorder (MDD), dysthymia, and GAD-depression comorbidity. Secondary aims were to examine the association between RLS with the cognitive-affective and somatic-vegetative disturbances experienced as part of depression and GAD. METHODS This was a cross-sectional study of 1493 elderly participants (median age 80.6 years, 64% women) from Dijon, France. Probable RLS was assessed using the minimal diagnostic criteria of the International Restless Legs Study Group and RLS symptom frequency and treatment. Participants underwent structured interviews for MDD, dysthymia, and GAD. Participants also completed the Center for Epidemiological Studies-Depression scale (CES-D). The association between RLS and psychiatric disorders, their criterion symptoms, or symptom factors was examined using logistic regression. RESULTS The point prevalence of probable RLS in this sample was 8.2%. Probable RLS was associated with isolated GAD (odds ratio [OR] 2.17, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.01-4.68) and comorbid GAD-any depression disorder (OR 3.26, 95% CI 1.14-9.29), but not MDD or dysthymia. Probable RLS was also associated with the GAD criterion worry most days and feeling tense, and the CES-D factors representing depressed affect, somatic symptoms, and positive affect. CONCLUSIONS Probable RLS was associated with GAD-depression comorbidity as well as isolated GAD. The findings challenge previous reports linking RLS solely with MDD, suggesting the association is partly driven by GAD-depression comorbidity.

Abstract
Currently, a total of 19 genetic loci are associated with the risk for developing RLS. This study aimed to assess these RLS predisposing genetic variants, as well as investigate the epidemiological profile and diagnostic features of individuals with RLS in the Québec population, using an interviewer–administered questionnaire. A total of 18 RLS-associated variants were genotyped in the Québec population-based CARTaGENE cohort. A case–control series consisting of 1,362 RLS cases and 1,379 age-matched unaffected controls was used to conduct a genetic and epidemiological association study that integrated the first four RLS diagnostic features of affected individuals, as well as additional RLS-related questions (e.g. frequency of the symptoms and number of total pregnancies in female). Five RLS-predisposing variants were significantly associated after Bonferroni correction and an additional five variants were nominally associated with RLS (p < 0.05). BTBD9 was the strongest genetic risk factor in our cohort (rs9296249, OR = 1.71, p = 9.57 × 10−10). The patient group that met all four essential diagnostic criteria of RLS provided the most significant genetic findings. These results suggest that employing the questionnaire which included standard diagnostic criteria of RLS could improve the accuracy of the survey-based studies.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common neurological disease. Studies have shown that RLS is associated with a variety of medical and neurological disorders. OBJECTIVES Using the example of three associated neurological diseases, the significance for everyday therapy decisions is assessed. MATERIAL AND METHODS A systematic search was carried out in PubMed for all studies with the keyword "RLS" in combination with polyneuropathies (PNP), Parkinson's disease (PD) and multiple sclerosis (MS) and classified according to the methodology in high, medium or low study quality. RESULTS Of 16 studies on RLS and MS, 10 were rated as "high". The high association frequency of RLS in MS between 13.3% and 65.1% (the variability possibly originates from different methods) prevents further statements about the prevalence. Within 30 studies on Parkinson's disease 17 were classified as having a high quality. In patients with Parkinson disease RLS occurs most frequently during therapy and is related to the duration of dopaminergic treatment. In patients with polyneuropathy, only 5 out of 24 studies were classified as being of high quality and an increased RLS prevalence was detected for acquired polyneuropathies with heterogeneous data for hereditary forms. CONCLUSION There is an increased prevalence of association with RLS for the diseases discussed. This prevalence is possibly determined by the pathophysiology of these disorders. These diseases are possibly characterized by genetic predispositions as well, which can hopefully be classified more accurately in the future.

Abstract
Background Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a common sleep disorder,. although controversial, growing evidence relates the presence of RLS to an increased risk of mortality, mainly due to cardiovascular events. The aim of this article was to review the role of RLS as a risk factor of mortality according to independent cohort studies. Methods We performed a literature review via PubMed database for articles relating RLS and mortality. We used the random-effects model to calculate the pooled effect estimates on mortality. Heterogeneity between studies was assessed using quantitative and qualitative analysis. Results Out of 100 articles identified, 13 were finally included. Although studies were heterogeneous (p = 0.001), no significant publication bias was found. When all cohort studies were considered, the random-effects model yielded a significantly increased risk of mortality in RLS versus non-RLS patients (13 studies, hazard ratio [HR] = 1.52, 95% confidence interval [CI] 1.28-1.80). However, this association was not statistically significant when only cohort studies using the international RLS diagnostic criteria were considered (5 studies, HR = 1.63, 95% CI 0.94-2.81). Discussion The results of this meta-analysis suggest that RLS seems to be a risk factor of mortality, although this association is conditioned by the diagnostic criteria used in the studies. Future long-term follow-up standardized mortality studies are needed to address this important question that carries potential impact on population global health.

Abstract
Background Restless legs syndrome (RLS) frequency, and its association with depression, anxiety, sleep disorders, and fatigue, has not been previously studied in Latin American patients with multiple sclerosis (MS). We aimed to assess RLS frequency in patients with MS living in Argentina and to examine potential associations with depression, anxiety, and sleep disorders. Methods A cross-sectional study (n = 427) was conducted using a self-administered questionnaire, including International RLS Study Group criteria, to compare RLS frequency in patients with MS versus controls. The Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale and the Fatigue Severity Scale were administered to all participants. Insomnia, excessive daytime somnolence, and other risk factors in patients with MS with RLS were analyzed using logistic regression. Results We included 189 patients with definite MS and 238 controls. The RLS frequency was 29.1% in patients with MS versus 13.0% in controls (odds ratio [OR] = 2.74, P = .00005). Moreover, clinically significant RLS (csRLS; ie, symptoms present ≥2 days per week) frequency was 19.4% in patients with MS versus 4.2% in controls (OR = 5.37, P < .00001). Longer MS duration and presence of anxiety, depression, insomnia, and smoking cigarettes were all significantly associated with RLS. Multivariate analysis showed that anxiety and fatigue were significantly associated with MS with RLS and MS with csRLS. Conclusions Both RLS and csRLS showed strong association with MS, supporting the need to screen for anxiety/depression, sleep quality, and fatigue in this patient population. We believe that identifying the presence and severity of these conditions would contribute to better MS management and treatment.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate the prevalence of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) symptoms in adult patients with primary restless legs syndrome (RLS) and to determine the iron biological correlates of these comorbidities. PARTICIPANTS AND METHODS We obtained demographic and clinical data from consecutive 105 outpatients with idiopathic RLS who answered validated questionnaires designed to assess the presence of ADHD and OCD symptoms. In these patients, iron blood parameters were routinely checked. RESULTS Of the total sample, 42.86% of the patients with RLS showed symptoms reminiscent either of ADHD or OCD. Prevalence of ADHD and OCD symptoms was 27.62% and 7.62%, respectively. Compared to other groups, a significantly higher percentage of RLS patients with ADHD symptoms was on antidepressant (p = 0.012); and women with ADHD symptoms, either alone or combined with OCD symptoms, showed significant reduced ferritin concentrations compared to men with either isolated ADHD symptoms or with combined ADHD and OCD symptoms (p = 0.028 and p = 0.025, respectively). CONCLUSIONS Our findings highlight the high prevalence of ADHD and OCD symptoms in adult patients with primary RLS and independently of serum iron stores decrease, except for women with ADHD symptoms either alone or in combination with OCD symptoms. This may suggest an overlapping neurobiological dopaminergic and serotoninergic dysfunction in ADHD, OCD, and RLS, and question the expression of different RLS phenotypes. The efficacy of dopamine agonists in these groups of patients should be questioned in future studies.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE In view of the diagnostic challenge posed by restless legs syndrome/Willis-Ekbom disease (RLS/WED) to health professionals and the challenge of its recognition by patients, the diagnostic criteria have been revised and updated to facilitate identification of this disease. However, in a previous study, we found that self-diagnosis of RLS/WED depends on the very name used to describe the condition. To ascertain whether the presence of the fifth diagnostic criterion of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group (IRLSSG), is necessary for RLS/WED diagnosis when the term "Willis-Ekbom disease" is used. METHODS We randomly distributed 705 forms to recent medical graduates, asking them to self-assess whether they had "Willis-Ekbom disease" (WED). In one questionnaire model, we excluded the fifth criterion suggested by the IRLSSG, while in the other, all five criteria were included. No forms contained the term RLS; only WED was used throughout. RESULTS Seven hundred and five recent medical graduates participated in the study. Among the 332 who received the form without the fifth criterion, 8 (2.41%) self-diagnosed as having WED (95%CI: 0.8%-4.1%). Of the 373 who received the form with all five of the 2014 IRLSSG criteria, 9 (2.41%) self-diagnosed as having WED (95%CI: 0.8%-4.0%) (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION Our data show that presence of the fifth IRLSSG criterion did not influence self-diagnosis of WED among recent medical graduates, suggesting that the name WED reduces the odds of mimics (confounding conditions) being misinterpreted as symptoms of this disease. This finding indicates that for the diagnosis of RLS/WED only four criteria and a systematic use of the name WED are necessary.

Abstract
This literature review focuses on restless arms syndrome (RAS), an upper limb variant of restless legs syndrome (RLS). RLS, also known as Willis-Ekbom disease, is a frequently occurring neurological disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the lower limbs often accompanied by unpleasant sensations in the legs, worsened at rest and in the evening, improved by movement. Extension of leg restlessness to the upper limbs is frequently reported in typical patients who had RLS only in the legs and usually occurs later in the course of RLS, restlessness remaining most invalidating in the lower limbs. In RAS, the arms are predominantly affected with little or no involvement of the legs. Cases of restless shoulders syndrome or periodic arm movements without arm restlessness were not considered. A total of 9 articles with 10 cases were included and analyzed for the adherence to the five essential diagnostic criteria of the International RLS Study Group (IRLSSG) classification, as well as for the additional supportive features. All of the reported cases were classified as having definite RAS. The clinical history and disease evolution of two previously reported patients were completed and updated. Overall, the clinical picture of RAS does not differ from that of RLS, except for the symptoms localization on the upper limbs. Underlying mechanisms of the spread of RLS to upper limb restlessness and of RAS remain unknown. Whether RAS is a phenotypic variant of RLS or a separate entity needs further investigations. RAS likely remains underdiagnosed and according to IRLSSG diagnostic criteria RAS should be considered when RLS-like symptoms are present in one or both arms, especially when they have a circadian pattern and are improved by movement and dopaminergic therapy. Clinicians should be aware of this rare condition, especially as treatment using dopaminergic agonists proves to be very efficient.

Abstract
Central disorders of hypersomnolence are characterized by daily periods of irrepressible need to sleep or daytime lapses into sleep, as defined in the current version of the International Criteria of Sleep Disorders. Thus, the unifying symptom is excessive daytime sleepiness which is not caused by any other sleep-wake disorder. Relevant disorders including narcolepsy type 1 and 2, idiopathic hypersomnia, Kleine-Levin syndrome, and insufficient sleep syndrome will be discussed. Other central disorders of hypersomnolence include hypersomnias due to medical or psychiatric disorders or because of medication or substance use.In sleep-related movement disorders, the cardinal symptom consists of simple, often stereotyped movements occurring during sleep. The most frequent disorder in this category of sleep-wake disorders is restless legs syndrome, which is often associated with period limb movements during sleep.

Objectives: We hypothesized that restless legs syndrome (RLS) would be common and associated with impaired quality of life (QOL) among palliative care outpatients. Methods: 76 palliative care clinic patients completed the National Institutes of Health restless legs syndrome (NIH-RLS) screening questionnaire. Questionnaire data was also gathered on RLS severity and RLS-related QOL, and the Short Form Health Survey (SF-12) was used to measure QOL. Analysis was performed for associations between RLS categorization and QOL measures. Results: 31 patients (40.8 percent) met criteria for RLS. RLS-positive patients had moderate-to-severe RLS symptoms and impaired RLS-specific QOL. RLS-positive patients scored lower on the mental component of the SF–12 (39 ± 11 versus 45 ± 12, p=0.03), though not on the physical component. In a multivariate regression analysis, higher levels of RLS severity had 2-point lower SF-12 mental component scores compared to lower levels of RLS severity (p=0.04), with no difference in physical component scores (p=0.47). Conclusion: RLS appears common in palliative care outpatients and is associated with impairments in QOL.

Abstract
Restless legs syndrome (RLS) is a chronic neurological disorder affecting a growing number of people. Patients describe an irresistible urge to move their lower limbs in times of immobility. Due to its vague symptoms and similarity to other disorders, it has become increasingly difficult for primary care clinicians to properly diagnose and manage RLS. As a result, patients with RLS are routinely misdiagnosed and continue their lives without proper management. This literature review examines the current understanding of the disorder, provides key points to assist clinicians in differentiating RLS from similar disorders, and explores recently updated evidence-based guidelines for the effective management of RLS.

Abstract
Correct diagnosis of restless legs syndrome (RLS) is essential to patient care and treatment. Diagnosis is most often clinical and based on diagnostic criteria: the need to move the legs accompanied to varying degrees by unpleasant sensations, predominantly during the evening and improved by movement. In rare cases, clinical examination is insufficient and a polysomnography is necessary. Once a positive diagnosis has been made, a neurological examination and an assessment of iron status are required. The severity of the RLS must be evaluated to determine whether a specific treatment is necessary. Before treatment, it is essential to ensure that a definite diagnosis of RLS has been made and the phenotype characterised. This enables a personal treatment plan and limits the risk of augmentation syndrome.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This article provides a clinical approach to the appropriate investigation and diagnosis of sleep disorders commonly seen by neurologists. RECENT FINDINGS Home sleep apnea testing in appropriate situations can replace laboratory polysomnography in many cases of uncomplicated sleep apnea. Multiple sleep latency tests must be performed meticulously and interpreted in the clinical setting to avoid overdiagnoses of narcolepsy. Human leukocyte antigen testing has limited utility in establishing a diagnosis of narcolepsy because a positive test has low specificity. Rapid eye movement (REM) sleep behavior disorder is frequently the first manifestation of an evolving synucleinopathy, and a careful history and neurologic examination are needed to determine other early features of these disorders. SUMMARY A meticulous history from the patient, supplemented by collateral history from an observer, is essential to establishing the diagnosis of sleep disorders. Judicious supplementary use of investigations, such as laboratory polysomnography, home sleep apnea testing, wrist actigraphy, and multiple sleep latency tests, can confirm the correct diagnosis. This article describes an approach to the sleepy patient, the patient with neuromuscular disease and possible sleep-disordered breathing, the patient with restless legs syndrome, and young and older patients with abnormal movements during sleep.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The prevalence of RLS in pregnancy is higher when compared with the general population however it remains unknown among indigenous black Africans. Available data indicate that RLS is uncommon in sub-Saharan Africa. We embarked on this study to determine the prevalence and characteristics of RLS in an antenatal clinic sample of Nigerian pregnant women compared with a primary care sample of non-pregnant women. METHODS A total of 310 pregnant women and non-pregnant women filled out a questionnaire which incorporated the 2014 minimal criteria of the International Restless Legs Syndrome Study Group. Demographic and clinical data, including sleep duration and samples for blood hemoglobin concentration and urinalysis were obtained. RESULTS The mean ages of the pregnant and non-pregnant women were 24.9 ± 5.6 years and 23.6 + 5.4 years, respectively (p = 0.003). There was no case of RLS found among pregnant women while five (1.6%) of the non-pregnant women fulfilled the criteria for RLS. Overall, the prevalence report of RLS symptoms was associated with lower mean habitual nocturnal sleep duration (p < 0.05) coffee (p = 0.013) and kola nut (0.023) consumption, report of leg cramps (p < 0.001) and proteinuria (p = 0.047), Report of leg cramps and proteinuria were independently associated with RLS. CONCLUSION The prevalence of restless legs syndrome is low among women of child-bearing age in the Nigerian population and may be lower in pregnancy. Report of leg cramps and proteinuria are independently associated with RLS.

Abstract
PURPOSE OF REVIEW This review will focus on the causes, consequences, workup, and treatment of sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome in patients with MS. An approach to the discussion of sleep problems and associated symptoms with MS patients, to facilitate timely and accurate diagnosis, is emphasized. RECENT FINDINGS Recent research suggests that sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome disproportionately affect patients with MS, and contribute to substantial morbidity in this population. SUMMARY Sleep disordered breathing, insomnia, and restless legs syndrome are common but frequently under-recognized conditions in patients with MS. Additional efforts are needed to incorporate discussions about sleep into the clinical evaluation of MS patients. Neuroanatomical features, concomitant comorbidities, and medications associated with MS may partially explain the high prevalence of these disorders in MS. Prompt identification and treatment of sleep disorders may reduce fatigue, and a thorough discussion with the MS patient about their sleep will facilitate fatigue management. Research that further characterizes recently identified relationships between sleep disturbances and other chronic symptoms in MS such as pain, depression and cognitive dysfunction could identify new pathways to improve some of the most debilitating symptoms of MS.

Abstract
Background Objective of the study is to assess prevalence and survival among end stage renal disease patients with restless legs syndrome (RLS) within a national database (USRDS). Methods A case-control, retrospective analysis was performed. Differences in characteristics between the groups, RLS and those with no sleep disorder (NSD), were determined using χ2 tests. Cox proportional hazard regression was used to assess survival between those with RLS and propensity score matched controls. Results Cases of restless legs syndrome were defined as patients that had received an ICD-9 code of 333.94 at any point during their treatment (n = 372). RLS group demonstrated a significantly higher proportion of patients with major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, anxiety, depression, minor depressive disorder, and psychological disorder. The difference between the survival was not statistically significant in those without sleep disorder as compared to those with RLS (HR =1.16±0.14, p = 0.3). Conclusions True prevalence of RLS in dialysis patients can only be estimated if knowledge gap for care providers in diagnosis of RLS is addressed. RLS patients also have increased incidence of certain psychological disorders which needs to be addressed.
