Abstract
INTRODUCTION Inadequate sleep duration and sleep-related problems are highly prevalent among adolescents and pose a significant health risk during a critical development stage. This study seeks to explore associations between sleep and suicidal ideation among adolescents. METHODS Cross-sectional questionnaire data from the baseline wave (2016-2018) of a cohort of 12- to 16-year-old Swedish adolescents (n = 4433, 50.39% girls) were analyzed. A split-sample approach was used for exploratory analyses and model selection. Logistic regression was used to estimate the associations between suicidal ideation and self-reported sleep parameters (weekday sleep duration, sleep quality), both adjusted and unadjusted for depression. RESULTS Adolescents with suicidal ideation slept on average 60 min less on weekdays and reported worse sleep quality compared to those without suicidal ideation. Suicidal ideation was significantly associated with weekday sleep duration (p = 0.0267) and self-perceived sleep quality (p = 0.0003). Associations remained after controlling for depression. CONCLUSIONS Sleep problems in adolescents are associated with suicidal ideation, beyond the effect of depression. Findings may have implications for screening and suicide prevention among clinical populations of adolescents, as well as for public health interventions aimed at promoting sleep and mental health in adolescents.

Abstract
This study aimed to translate and validate the Functional Assessment of Cancer Therapy - Head & Neck (FACT-HN) in a Serbian-speaking population, assessing its psychometric properties and utility in evaluating the quality of life in head and neck cancer patients. The research focuses on determining the translated questionnaire's reliability, validity, and cultural relevance. A total of 106 Serbian-speaking head and neck cancer patients completed the translated FACT-HN, along with other validated instruments, including the EORTC QLQ-C30, EORTC QLQ-HN43, CES-D, and GAD-7. The translation followed a standard internationally accepted procedure. Psychometric analyses were conducted using confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis, Pearson correlations, and reliability measures such as Cronbach's alpha and intraclass correlation coefficients. The Serbian version of the FACT-HN showed excellent internal consistency across all subscales, with Cronbach's alpha ranging from 0.70 to 0.89. Confirmatory factor analysis confirmed the five-factor structure. Strong correlations were observed between the FACT-HN and other validated QoL measures, particularly with the EORTC QLQ-C30 and EORTC QLQ-HN43. Convergent validity was satisfactory for all components except the Social Well-Being component. The Serbian version of the FACT-HN is a valid and reliable tool for assessing the quality of life in head and neck cancer patients. It provides a comprehensive assessment of physical, social, emotional, and functional well-being, making it valuable for clinical and research applications in Serbian-speaking populations. Further research is needed to assess its sensitivity to longitudinal treatment-related changes.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Emerging research suggests that poor sleep quality and some disruptive nocturnal behaviors (DNBs) may be advance markers of short-term worsening in suicidal intent. However, relationships between many types of DNBs and suicide risk have not been examined, and whether DNBs provide useful information apart from sleep quality in predicting suicidal intent is unknown. This study addressed these critical knowledge gaps by examining associations between sleep quality, DNBs, and next-day suicidal intent in a community sample of adults. METHODS A sample of 237 adults with severe suicidal ideation provided daily indices of sleep quality and DNBs, and suicidal intent 6 times per day for 2 weeks via ecological momentary assessment. Linear mixed models and general linear models were conducted to examine relationships between sleep quality and DNBs with measures of average severity of suicidal intent and fluctuations in intent over time. RESULTS Poor sleep quality and specific DNBs (sleep disruptions due to general nervousness, trauma-related memories and/or nightmares interrupting sleep, and non-trauma-related anxiety or panic) predicted more severe suicidal intent in multivariate models. Only poor sleep quality predicted within-day variability in suicidal intent. CONCLUSIONS These findings suggest that monitoring sleep quality and specific DNBs may be a useful indicator of short-term risk for worsening in suicidal intent.

Abstract
Introduction Non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) is a high-risk factor for suicide, which is widespread among college students and is closely associated with psychological issues. Insomnia tends to cause mental instability, and chronic insomnia can trigger severe mood swings, including anxiety, depression, and irritability. It can also lead to memory loss and metabolic disorders. College students are in a critical period of self-development, with significant vulnerability to insomnia and NSSI. This study investigated the influence of insomnia on NSSI among college students and examined the significance of rumination as a mediating factor. Methods Using random cluster sampling, we selected 667 college students from Jiangsu, China, and evaluated them using the Athens Insomnia Scale (AIS), Adolescent Self-Injury Scale (ASIS), and Ruminative Responses Scale (RRS). The significance of the mediating effect of rumination on the relationship between insomnia and NSSI among college students was tested using Bootstrap methods. Results The fact that the students were only children was statistically significant for rumination scores (p < 0.05). The results showed a significant positive correlation among insomnia, NSSI, and rumination (r = 0.198, 0.737, 0.243, respectively; p < 0.001). Insomnia of college students affects NSSI directly and indirectly through rumination. Conclusion Rumination fully mediated the relationship between insomnia and NSSI among college students, indicating an indirect influence of insomnia on NSSI. Total effect value is 0.192. Rumination plays a complete mediating role in the relationship between insomnia and NSSI among college students, with a mediating effect of 84.21%.

Abstract
Prior research has established that insomnia is predictive of pain in adolescents and that psychological mechanisms have a crucial role in this relationship. Adolescent girls report more insomnia and pain than boys, yet little is known of gender differences in how insomnia influences pain. This study assessed gender differences in levels and trajectories of insomnia and pain during adolescence, and whether rumination and negative mood mediated the effect of insomnia on pain. Longitudinal survey data measured on 5 annual occasions (Nbaseline = 2,767) were analyzed in a multigroup longitudinal serial mediation model. A final model was generated with insomnia as the predictor, rumination and depressed mood as mediators, pain as the outcome, and gender as the grouping variable. The results showed that insomnia predicted pain in adolescents, with an effect 3.5 times larger in girls than boys. Depressed mood was the main mediator in boys. In girls, rumination was the only significant mediator. There were significant gender differences in the effects of insomnia on rumination and pain, and in the effects of rumination on depressed mood and pain, with stronger effects in girls. These results highlight that girls and boys should be considered separately when studying the relationship between insomnia and pain. PERSPECTIVE: Levels of insomnia and pain are progressively higher in adolescent girls than boys, across adolescence. The predictive strength of insomnia symptoms for future pain is 3.5 times greater in girls, with distinct gender-specific underlying pathways: rumination partially mediates this effect in girls, while depressed mood does so in boys.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance and impulsivity are key components of mood vulnerability in bipolar disorder (BD), but few studies have assessed the association between these two symptoms among patients with BD. METHODS Forty-seven euthymic patients with bipolar I disorder (BDI) or bipolar II disorder (BDII) and 58 age- and sex-matched healthy controls were enrolled in this cross-sectional study. Trait impulsivity was measured using the Barratt Impulsiveness Scale Version 11 (BIS-11), which yielded 3 second-order factors: attention, motor, and non-planning. Subjective sleep quality was assessed using the self-reported Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). General linear models (GLMs) were used to assess the associations between subjective poor sleep and trait impulsivity with multiple testing corrections. RESULTS Patients with BD scored higher in BIS-11 and PSQI than healthy controls. PSQI total scores positively correlated with BIS-11 total scores, while sleep disturbance and daytime dysfunction were associated with attentional impulsiveness after controlling for covariates. Participants with higher PSQI total scores (>10) had higher scores in BIS-11 total, attention, and non-planning than those with low PSQI scores (≤5). CONCLUSION These findings support the hypothesis that poor sleep quality might lead to impulsivity and add to the growing evidence that improving sleep quality may be a therapeutic target for patients with BD.

Abstract
Based on previous empirical evidences and theoretical framework, sleep problems and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI)/suicidal behavior may bidirectionally related to one another. However, this still needs to be examined through longitudinal research. Moreover, the mediating mechanisms accounting for their potential bidirectional relations have yet to be fully investigated. This study thus aimed to evaluate whether sleep problems and NSSI/suicidal behavior promoted each other directly or indirectly through the mediating roles of emotion regulation difficulties (ERD) and externalizing problems. A total of 1648 Chinese adolescents (48.12% boys; Mage = 13.69; SD = 0.82; Age range = 11-16 years old at T1) completed self-report measures on 3-time points across 1 year. Cross-lagged panel models were used to examine the focal longitudinal associations. Results revealed a predictive effect of sleep problems on NSSI and a positive bidirectional relation between sleep problems and suicidal behavior. Moreover, sleep problems exerted an indirect effect on NSSI through ERD, and vice versa. Additionally, both ERD and externalizing problems served as mediators in the pathway from suicidal behavior to sleep problems. This study disentangled the differential mediating roles of ERD and externalizing problems in the longitudinal associations between sleep problems and NSSI/suicidal behavior, which may help provide a more holistic theoretical framework through which to precisely identify key targets for early prevention and intervention of sleep problems and NSSI/suicidal behavior in adolescents.

Abstract
Despite the growing evidence that stressful life events are associated with adolescent non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI), few studies have investigated the mediating and moderating mechanisms underlying this link. The current study examined whether sleep quality mediated the link between stressful life events and NSSI and whether this mediating process was moderated by adolescent sensation seeking. The participants were 1006 Chinese adolescents (48.21% boys; mean age = 13.16 years, SD = 0.67). They completed the Life Events Checklist, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, UPPS-P Impulsive Behavior Scale, and NSSI Questionnaire. The PROCESS macro for SPSS was used to examine the hypothesized moderated mediation model. The results showed that sleep quality significantly mediated the positive association between stressful life events and adolescent NSSI. Moreover, this mediating pathway was moderated by sensation seeking. Specifically, the risk impact of stressful life events on NSSI through sleep quality was significant only among adolescents with high-level sensation seeking but not among those with low-level sensation seeking. These findings provide intervention insights to reduce the risk of adolescent NSSI.

Abstract
PURPOSE Growing evidence supports sleep and circadian rhythms as influencing alcohol use and the course of alcohol use disorder (AUD). Studying sleep/circadian-alcohol associations during adolescence and young adulthood may be valuable for identifying sleep/circadian-related approaches to preventing and/or treating AUD. This paper reviews current evidence for prospective associations between sleep/circadian factors and alcohol involvement during adolescence and young adulthood with an emphasis on the effects of sleep/circadian factors on alcohol use. SEARCH METHODS The authors conducted a literature search in PsycInfo, PubMed, and Web of Science using the search terms "sleep" and "alcohol" paired with "adolescent" or "adolescence" or "young adult" or "emerging adult," focusing on the title/abstract fields, and restricting to English-language articles. Next, the search was narrowed to articles with a prospective/longitudinal or experimental design, a sleep-related measure as a predictor, an alcohol-related measure as an outcome, and confirming a primarily adolescent and/or young adult sample. This step was completed by a joint review of candidate article abstracts by two of the authors. SEARCH RESULTS The initial search resulted in 720 articles. After review of the abstracts, the list was narrowed to 27 articles reporting on observational longitudinal studies and three articles reporting on intervention trials. Noted for potential inclusion were 35 additional articles that reported on studies with alcohol-related predictors and sleep-related outcomes, and/or reported on candidate moderators or mediators of sleep-alcohol associations. Additional articles were identified via review of relevant article reference lists and prior exposure based on the authors' previous work in this area. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS Overall, the review supports a range of sleep/circadian characteristics during adolescence and young adulthood predicting the development of alcohol use and/or alcohol-related problems. Although sleep treatment studies in adolescents and young adults engaging in regular and/or heavy drinking show that sleep can be improved in those individuals, as well as potentially reducing alcohol craving and alcohol-related consequences, no studies in any age group have yet demonstrated that improving sleep reduces drinking behavior. Notable limitations include relatively few longitudinal studies and only two experimental studies, insufficient consideration of different assessment timescales (e.g., day-to-day vs. years), insufficient consideration of the multidimensional nature of sleep, a paucity of objective measures of sleep and circadian rhythms, and insufficient consideration of how demographic variables may influence sleep/circadian-alcohol associations. Examining such moderators, particularly those related to minoritized identities, as well as further investigation of putative mechanistic pathways linking sleep/circadian characteristics to alcohol outcomes, are important next steps.

Abstract
Introduction Suicidal ideation is a critical early stage in the progression towards suicidal be havior. Prior research has established links between sleep quality, impulsivity, and suicidal tendencies, yet the interaction among these factors has been less explored. This study aims to explore the mediating role of impulsivity in the relationship between sleep quality and suicidal ideation in adolescents. Methods Employing a cross-sectional study design, 6,974 questionnaires were distributed,including the Socio-demographic Characteristics Questionnaire, Barratt Impulsiveness Scale, the Positive and Negative Suicide Ideation Inventory,and the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index Scale. The participants were high school and middle school students from 33 schools in northeastern Sichuan, China, selected through random cluster sampling. Results Of these 6,786 questionnaires were analyzed. The participant distribution included 47.2% male and 52.8% female students, with 68.3% from junior schools and 31.7% from senior schools. The prevalence of suicidal ideation was found to be 13.6%. The analysis, which involved correlation analysis and the construction of a structural equation model, revealed that sleep quality had a significant positive effect on impulsivity (β:0.289,p < 0.05), and impulsivity, in turn, had a positive impact on suicidal ideation (β:0.355,p < 0.05).Moreover, sleep quality was directly linked to suicidal ideation (β:0.208,p < 0.05). Thus, sleep quality affects suicidal ideation both directly and indirectly through impulsivity. Discussion The results of this study suggest that both sleep quality and impulsivity are significant direct influencers of suicidal ideation among adolescents in the region studied, with impulsivity also playing an indirect role in the relationship between sleep quality and suicidal ideation.

Abstract
This White Paper addresses the current gaps in knowledge, as well as opportunities for future studies in pediatric sleep. The Sleep Research Society's Pipeline Development Committee assembled a panel of experts tasked to provide information to those interested in learning more about the field of pediatric sleep, including trainees. We cover the scope of pediatric sleep, including epidemiological studies and the development of sleep and circadian rhythms in early childhood and adolescence. Additionally, we discuss current knowledge of insufficient sleep and circadian disruption, addressing the neuropsychological impact (affective functioning) and cardiometabolic consequences. A significant portion of this White Paper explores pediatric sleep disorders (including circadian rhythm disorders, insomnia, restless leg and periodic limb movement disorder, narcolepsy, and sleep apnea), as well as sleep and neurodevelopment disorders (e.g. autism and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder). Finally, we end with a discussion on sleep and public health policy. Although we have made strides in our knowledge of pediatric sleep, it is imperative that we address the gaps to the best of our knowledge and the pitfalls of our methodologies. For example, more work needs to be done to assess pediatric sleep using objective methodologies (i.e. actigraphy and polysomnography), to explore sleep disparities, to improve accessibility to evidence-based treatments, and to identify potential risks and protective markers of disorders in children. Expanding trainee exposure to pediatric sleep and elucidating future directions for study will significantly improve the future of the field.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate sleep quantity as a moderator of vaping and self-reported suicidality among adolescents. DESIGN Cross-sectional. Setting: United States high schools. SAMPLE 10,520 high-school students with complete data on the primary outcome of suicide attempt in the past year (76.9% response rate). MEASURES 2019 Youth Risk Behaviors Survey. ANALYSIS Logistic regression to examine main effects and potential moderation. RESULTS Students with under seven sleep hours on school nights (OR = 2.6; 95% CI = 2.1-3.3) and who vaped in the past month (OR = 3.0; 95% CI = 2.1-3.9) had higher odds of attempting suicide in the last year. Sleep quantity moderated the relationship between vaping and suicidal thoughts in the past year (P = .01) but did not moderate the relationship between vaping and a suicide plan (P = .15) or suicide attempts (P = .06). Specifically, vaping had a smaller effect on suicidal thoughts among students who slept under seven hours on school nights (OR = 1.8) compared to the descriptively larger effect among participants with more sleep (OR = 2.5). CONCLUSIONS Students who vape or report low sleep quantity would be ideal participants in suicide prevention interventions as they may be at higher risk for suicidality. Organizations implementing sleep or vaping interventions should incorporate information regarding the higher odds of suicide among students with low sleep quantity or vaping habits.

Abstract
The aim of the study was to investigate the association between adolescent delinquency and sleep deficiency. A comprehensive set of potential mechanisms underlying this association were also examined. Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent to Adult Health, the present study employed sibling fixed effects models to account for unobservable family-level confounders, such as genetic predisposition, parenting style, parental ability, and school and neighborhood environments. In Sobel mediation tests, the following mechanism variables were explored: substance use, school-based relationships, and parent-child relationships. An increase in delinquency (measured by the total number of types of delinquent behavior engaged) was associated with an increased risk of sleep deficiency one year later. Sibling fixed effects models with a lagged dependent variable revealed that this association is robust to adjustment for family-level heterogeneity as well as prior sleep deficiency. Substance use was the most salient pathway linking delinquency to sleep deficiency (17% for binge drinking and 26% for marijuana use), followed by student-teacher relationships (17%) and father-child relationships (16%). The results of this study suggest that policymakers and practitioners may consider developing interventions to help delinquent adolescents avoid substance use and restore disruptions of student-teacher and father-child relationships.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Sleep disturbance is common among young people (15-25 years) with features of borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, the mechanisms underlying sleep disturbance in BPD remain unknown. Understanding these underlying processes is essential to guide the development of sleep-improvement interventions and to optimise their efficacy through identifying beneficial treatment targets. This exploratory study aimed to investigate potential underlying mechanisms to inform future hypotheses, research development, and provide insight into potential treatment targets to improve sleep in young people with BPD. This study explored the indirect roles of emotion regulation difficulties, depression, anxiety and stress in the relationship between BPD features and sleep disturbance in young people. METHODS Sleep was measured subjectively (self-report questionnaires) and objectively (10 days wrist actigraphy) in 40 young people with BPD features and 38 healthy young people. Participants also completed the Difficulties in Emotion Regulation Scale and the Depression, Anxiety and Stress Scale. RESULTS Mediation analyses revealed that impulse control difficulties, limited emotion regulation strategies and anxiety indirectly affected the relationship between group (BPD vs. healthy) and subjective sleep disturbance in young people. Lack of emotional awareness and anxiety contributed to associations between group and objectively longer time in bed and bedtime variability, respectively. CONCLUSIONS These preliminary findings suggest that targeting emotional dysregulation (impulse control, strategies, emotional awareness) and anxiety might be beneficial for improving sleep in this population.

Abstract
Insomnia has been shown to negatively affect one's cognitive functioning. While there has been some evidence suggesting sleep disruption in relation to impaired inhibitory control, a major component of executive function, little is known about the underlying neural processing in insomnia. The current study aimed to examine the differences in the behavioral responses and electroencephalography (EEG) correlates of inhibitory control between youths with insomnia and healthy sleepers. Twenty-eight participants with insomnia disorder and 31 healthy sleeper controls aged between 15 and 25 completed the study. Electroencephalographic activity was recorded during the Cued Go/NoGo (CGNG) task, a task assessing inhibitory control. Although insomnia group exhibited comparable behavioral performance to the healthy sleeper group, they showed impaired attention preparation, as displayed by a smaller contingent negative variation (CNV) component (F = 4.10, p = 0.048) after cue onset; and demonstrated impaired inhibitory control, as evidenced by smaller N2 and theta power on 200-350 ms (MANCOVA multivariate Group effect, F = 5.85, p < 0.001). The results suggested that youths with insomnia demonstrated altered brain activity during inhibitory control, despite their comparable behavioral performance. Given that impaired inhibitory control is often implicated in psychopathology, future studies with a longitudinal design are needed to further explore the long-term impacts and trajectory of altered inhibitory control in youths with insomnia.

Abstract
We propose a theoretical model of insomnia symptoms and non-suicidal self-injury (NSSI) that posits bidirectional linkages. We hypothesised that heightened depressive symptoms and impulsivity that result from insomnia increase NSSI. We also posit that the shame associated with NSSI triggers repetitive negative thinking, in turn increasing insomnia. Using three longitudinal waves of questionnaire data collected annually from a sample of Swedish adolescents (n = 1,457; Mage = 13.2, SD = 0.43; 52.7% boys), we assessed the mediating role of depressive symptoms, impulsivity, rumination, and worry on the link between insomnia and NSSI. After controlling for depressive symptoms, we found that insomnia was related to increases in NSSI from the second to the third time point (ß23 = 0.09, p = .01). NSSI was consistently related to increased insomnia (ß12 = 0.09, p = .01; ß23 = 0.11, p < .001). In addition, depressive symptoms (ßind = 0.01, p = .02), but not impulsivity (ßind = 0.01, p = .09), mediated the path from insomnia to increased NSSI. Neither worry (ßind = 0.00, p = .59) nor rumination (ßind = 0.00, p = .96) mediated the link between NSSI and increased insomnia. We conclude that NSSI and insomnia maintain each other over time. Thus, screening adolescents for insomnia symptoms may help identify those at risk of NSSI. Although depression seems to explain why insomnia is a risk factor for NSSI, further studies should investigate why NSSI plays a role in the maintenance of insomnia. This understanding will lay the foundation for intervention.

Abstract
Although sleep disturbances are highly prevalent in adolescents, neuroimaging evidence on the effects of sleep disturbances on their developing brains remains limited. Therefore, we explored gray matter volumes (GMVs) at the whole-brain level and investigated their relationship to sleep disturbances in a sample of Korean adolescents in the general population. We recruited participants from one middle school and high school. All participants and their legal guardians gave informed consent before participating in our study. We used component 5 of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index to measure sleep disturbances and conducted a voxel-based morphometry-DARTEL procedure to measure GMVs. We performed partial correlation analyses to examine whether the GMVs were associated with sleep disturbances. A total of 56 adolescents participated in this study. Our results revealed that GMVs in multiple global regions were negatively correlated with sleep disturbances. Moreover, most of these identified regions belong to large-scale brain networks categorized by functional neuroimaging studies. We found an association between regional GMVs in multiple global regions involved in large-scale networks and the severity of sleep disturbances in the adolescent population. Based on this evidence and previous neuroimaging evidence, we suggest that structural alterations in the networks may be linked to sleep disturbances.
